- 0:22SPEAKER_00: The poet John Dunn once wrote, No Man is an island.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: In today's hyperconnected world, this seems more true than ever.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And since you're the type of writer who wants to be generous and build relationships, you're probably always looking for ways to support those other writers.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Here are five ways to do that.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Number one, write personal messages to authors whose books you like.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: You can find email addresses, social media accounts, or at the very least, website contact forms for almost any author in the world.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Let them know how their book impacted you and why you liked it, and I promise it'll mean the world to them.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Number two, engage with that author's non-book content.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Most authors have email lists and social media accounts, and many also have their own podcast or video channels.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: I want you to like, share, comment, subscribe, and support the material that they're creating.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Number three, buy their books, share those books on social media, and give copies away to your friends.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: You're not only supporting the author's livelihood, you also become your friend's favorite person by giving them unexpected gifts from that author.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Number four, write book reviews.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: After you post a review on an online retailer website like Amazon or Barnes Noble, take a screenshot of your review and post that on social media and make sure to tag the author.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Reviews are the lifeblood of an author's business, as you of course know.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And if you want others to leave book reviews for you, you've got to do the same thing for others.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And finally, number five, share quotes from those authors' books.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: You can do this on social media, email, podcast, or by other means.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: This is a really simple way to spread a book's message in a short, digestible way.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: You know, none of these things are that complicated.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: If you just take five minutes a day to do one or two of these, I promise it'll make a huge difference for the authors that you support.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: It'll also grow your audience and your influence as well.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So here's today's challenge.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Choose an author whose work you enjoy and do one of these things for them before you go to bed tonight.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And since we're talking about ways that we can support each other, let me talk about a way that I can support you as an author.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: You know, it's easy to listen to podcasts and read emails and books and get on Zoom calls with other people.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Those things are great, and I do all those things myself.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: But there's nothing quite like being in a small group of other writers who are making their writing dreams come true by publishing books and building their business.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So that's why I want to let you know about the Daily Writer Retreat on May 2nd through the 4th, coming up here in just a few weeks.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: This is a really important way that I like to support other writers.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: So what happens is we gather in a beautiful historic home in St.
