Transcript
- 0:08Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We are going
- 0:10to begin a new series for this October and we
- 0:13are calling it When God Feels Silent. And so
- 0:17what are we going to be talking about in this
- 0:18series? What we are going to do is just answer
- 0:22some things that doesn't have any real clear
- 0:25answers. What do you do whenever we pray and
- 0:27we hear no answers? In this four -week episode,
- 0:30we're going to be talking about the honest ache
- 0:33of spiritual silence without offering shallow
- 0:36explanations through the Psalms, Habakkuk, Elijah,
- 0:39the Cross, the story of Lazarus. Listeners, I
- 0:44hope that you learn how to lament honestly, wait
- 0:47faithfully, discern humbly, and trust God in
- 0:50the silence. in the same as His absence. And
- 0:56so we're going to be talking about silence is
- 0:58not absence, waiting without losing heart. And
- 1:02whenever you cannot hear, hold on to what you
- 1:04know. The God who meets you in the dark. And
- 1:07our anchor scripture is going to be Psalm 62,
- 1:10five through six. Rest in the Lord. Rest in God
- 1:14alone my soul for my hope comes from him. He
- 1:18alone is my rock my salvation my stronghold I
- 1:22will not be shaken and so in episode 1 we're
- 1:26gonna be calling this silence is not absence
- 1:29and so God May feel silent and it's easy to assume
- 1:33he stepped away. He stopped caring He rejected
- 1:36us and so we're gonna be looking at Psalm 13
- 1:41Job and some hidden years of Jesus to separate
- 1:44God's silence from His absence. And this honest
- 1:48conversation is for lament, correcting harmful
- 1:52assumptions, and gives you some simple, practical
- 1:56ideas of staying present to God when answers
- 1:59do not come. And so welcome back to Fostering
- 2:03Faith. I am going to be your host Tracy, and
- 2:05I am so grateful that you chose to spend time
- 2:07with us today. And so this month we're going
- 2:09to be entering a conversation many believers
- 2:11experience, but do not always feel safe enough
- 2:14to name. Our October series is called When God
- 2:18Feels Silent, Faith in the Waiting. And so maybe
- 2:23you've prayed about a situation for months. Maybe
- 2:25you have asked God for direction and every option
- 2:28still is unclear. Maybe you've opened your Bible
- 2:31hoping for a verse to just settle your heart,
- 2:34but the words felt flat. And maybe you've watched
- 2:37someone else celebrate the answered prayers while
- 2:40yours seemed to disappear into the ceiling. And
- 2:43somewhere in the waiting, a painful question
- 2:45begins to grow. God, where are you? And if that's
- 2:51where you're at today, I don't want you to rush
- 2:53past that. I don't want you to hand you a slogan
- 2:56and call it comfort. Silence can hurt. Waiting
- 3:00can wear down the strongest person, and unanswered
- 3:03prayers can stir up fear, disappointment, anger
- 3:07and confusion, and even shame. But here's the
- 3:10truth. We're going to be walking and getting
- 3:13a hold of this month. God's silence is not the
- 3:15same as God's absence. And our anchor passage
- 3:18is Psalm 62 .5. And through So David was not
- 3:33pretending that there was no trouble. He is speaking
- 3:35to his own soul in the middle of it. He does
- 3:38not say his hope comes from having all the information.
- 3:42His hope comes from God. And so let's pray. Dear
- 3:45Heavenly Father, thank you so much for today.
- 3:47Thank you so much for yesterday. Thank you so
- 3:49much for these listeners. Meet us in this place
- 3:52where we're at, where we feel like you're far
- 3:54away. Give us courage to tell you the truth about
- 3:57our waiting. Quiet the voices that say that we've
- 4:00been forgotten. Help us listen without forcing
- 4:03an answer and trust without pretending the pain
- 4:06is real. Make this a safe place for disappointment,
- 4:10the weary and the unsure. We pray this in Jesus'
- 4:13name. Amen. And so the Bible does not hide the
- 4:17question. Sometimes church culture gives us an
- 4:20impression that mature faith never asks God where
- 4:23He is. But scripture tells us a different story.
- 4:27Psalm 13 begins, how long Lord, will you forget
- 4:30me forever? How long will you hide your face
- 4:33from me? Psalm 22 begins, my God, my God, why
- 4:38have you abandoned me? Habakkuk. ask how long
- 4:42he should call for help before God listens. And
- 4:46Job searches for God and cannot perceive him.
- 4:49These words are not outside the Bible. God chose
- 4:53to place them inside of it. And that means honest
- 4:56questions are not automatically rebellion. A
- 4:59question can be an act of faith when we bring
- 5:03it to God instead of using it for reason to walk
- 5:05away. Lament is what happens when pain keeps
- 5:09talking to God. And we have Psalm 13 moves through
- 5:13this pattern. And so look at that. And so David
- 5:16asked, how long? He names what the silence is
- 5:19doing inside of him. He asked God to look in
- 5:23the answer and he remembers God's faithful love
- 5:26and chooses to sing. Notice the remembrance does
- 5:29not erase the question. David's circumstances
- 5:32did not change between the first line and the
- 5:34last line. What changes is where he places the
- 5:37weight of his soul. Biblical lament makes room
- 5:41for two truths at once. This hurts and God is
- 5:46still faithful. I do not understand, but I still
- 5:50turn towards him. I feel forgotten, but I will
- 5:54remember what is true. So you right now, do you
- 5:59not have anything to look back on and say that
- 6:03he is faithful, that he is still with you? And
- 6:07that you remember what scripture said is true.
- 6:10You do not have to deny the first truth to hold
- 6:13on to the second one. And so silence is not a
- 6:16verdict. And so when God feels quiet, we often
- 6:19feel that silence with our own conclusions, with
- 6:23our own conversations, because we as a society
- 6:25have a problem with being quiet. And we want
- 6:27answers now and we want packages before we even
- 6:30hit the board and sinned. And so maybe God's
- 6:33disappointed in me. Maybe I missed my chance.
- 6:36Maybe I didn't pray correctly. Maybe I didn't
- 6:38use enough words. Maybe I didn't use and pray
- 6:40long enough. Maybe I didn't fast long enough.
- 6:43Maybe I didn't have enough faith. Maybe has answered
- 6:45people because they matter more. But a feeling
- 6:51is not a verdict, and silence does not give us
- 6:55permission to invite God's attitude towards us.
- 7:00And for those who are in Christ, the cross has
- 7:02already spoken about God's love. Romans 8 says
- 7:05that God did not spare his own son, but gave
- 7:08him up for all of us. The same chapter says nothing
- 7:12can separate us from the love of God and Christ
- 7:16Jesus. And when the circumstances are unclear,
- 7:19return to what God had made clear in Christ.
- 7:21You are not loved because every prayer is answered
- 7:25on a perfect timeline. You are loved because
- 7:27God set His love on you and Jesus gave Him self
- 7:31for you. This does not mean every desired outcome
- 7:34is guaranteed. Faith is not technical for controlling
- 7:37God. It means that whatever the outcome is, God's
- 7:40children are not abandoned to be alone. And sometimes
- 7:44silence is connected to sin. that we need to
- 7:47confess and scripture invites us to talk to God
- 7:50to search our hearts and please do that please
- 7:53do that please please please and he will just
- 7:55illuminate all the things and i mean it literally
- 7:58is so good like going for like long runs or just
- 8:02going out for a walk and just being in outside
- 8:05in nature is i love doing that Search my heart
- 8:08like, you know, you need to tell me and like
- 8:10he will just bring up so many things but it's
- 8:12just you and him Like no distractions except
- 8:15for like his beauty and the skies and the clouds
- 8:17and like whatever animal he puts in front of
- 8:19you but so so good just sit with him just Nothing
- 8:23really around just like have that time on the
- 8:26road on the treadmill like you know in the gym
- 8:28and Whenever your circumstances are unclear return
- 8:32to what God made clear in Christ You are not
- 8:35loved because of something You are love because
- 8:38He is love. And this does not mean that every
- 8:42desired outcome is guaranteed. Like I said before,
- 8:46sometimes silence is connected to sin that we
- 8:48need to confess. And that's great that you need
- 8:50to do that. But we should not assume that every
- 8:53quiet session is punishment. And so Job's friends
- 8:57make the mistake. They saw suffering and built
- 9:00a simple explanation. Job, well, you must have
- 9:03done something to deserve it. God later corrected
- 9:06them. But be careful of explanations that protect
- 9:09your need for certainty, but misrepresent the
- 9:13heart of God. And so we have all that Christianese,
- 9:16well, you didn't have enough faith. Oh, well,
- 9:18you didn't have this and you didn't do this and
- 9:20you didn't do this. We are not pleasing God.
- 9:22He loves us no matter what we've done or how
- 9:26we do it. He loves us. There's nothing that you're
- 9:30going to do to change his mind. He is impassable.
- 9:33And so hidden does not mean inactive. The Bible
- 9:37contains long stretches where God appears quiet,
- 9:41and yet his purpose continues. Joseph receives
- 9:44a dream as a young man, but years later, through
- 9:47slavery and prison, before those dreams make
- 9:50sense, Israel waits generations for deliverance
- 9:54from Egypt. Between the Old Testament prophet
- 9:56and the public ministry of John the Baptist,
- 9:59centuries pass without a new prophetic book.
- 10:02Jesus lives roughly 30 years before beginning
- 10:05his public ministry that lasts only a few years.
- 10:09We know very little about those hidden years,
- 10:13but hidden didn't mean wasted. Jesus was not
- 10:16behind. The Father was not absent. Preparation
- 10:19was taking place behind and beyond public view.
- 10:24There are seasons when God is doing the work
- 10:26in us that we cannot measure. He may be exposing
- 10:30what we learned on besides him, he may be developing
- 10:36patience, deepening compassion, redirecting desire,
- 10:40closing a harmful door, rearranging circumstances
- 10:43that we cannot see. We should speak about that
- 10:46with humility. We cannot claim to know the secret
- 10:50random reason behind every delay. Some mysteries
- 10:53remain mysteries, but we can say this. For sure,
- 10:58God is not limited to the work we can currently
- 11:03recognize. A seed beneath the soil looks inactive,
- 11:09but if you only judge it by the surface, roots
- 11:12can be forming where no one sees. And when your
- 11:16nervous system is tired, spiritual silence is
- 11:19not always a theological experience, sometimes
- 11:23grief, depression, anxiety, trauma, exhaustion,
- 11:26a physical illness can make something feel distant,
- 11:30including God. And if prayer feels impossible,
- 11:33it does not necessarily mean that you are failing
- 11:36spiritually. You may be depleted. You may need
- 11:39sleep, medical care, counseling, support, a help,
- 11:44caring responsibilities that you have because
- 11:48you're too weary and it's too heavy. God's care
- 11:51can reach through the ordinary means of a therapist,
- 11:55a provider, a pastor, a meal from a friend, medication
- 11:59responsibly prescribed, a walk or a night of
- 12:03rest. Seeking help is not a betrayal of faith.
- 12:07And if you are in danger of harming yourself
- 12:09or cannot stay safe, please reach out Amelia
- 12:12to emergency services or a crisis resource where
- 12:15you live. Tell a trusted friend, a person who
- 12:18can remain with you. You do not have to carry
- 12:21this moment alone. A practice for this week.
- 12:27Tell, ask, remember, and rest. This week, I'm
- 12:32going to give you some simple ways to pray whenever
- 12:34you do not know how and what to say. Tell God
- 12:38what is true. Name the situation and the emotion
- 12:41without clearing it up. God, I am disappointed.
- 12:46I am angry. I am afraid. You are not going to
- 12:50come through. I am tired of waiting. You know
- 12:53what? None of that was a surprise. He knows what
- 12:56you're feeling, but he's just waiting on you
- 12:58to tell him. He's a big God and he can handle
- 13:03your big problems. Ask for what you need and
- 13:07be specific asking for healing, direction, provision,
- 13:11reconciliation, courage, or peace. Honest surrender
- 13:16does not require a vague prayer don't like we
- 13:20I think that looks like a christianese thing
- 13:21is like we oh we have like all these kind of
- 13:25like really big circley like kind of prayers
- 13:27and so therefore we don't get disappointed whenever
- 13:29he doesn't answer specifically what we said and
- 13:33it is like he hears it all now whether you know
- 13:37like you align your thoughts with god's thoughts
- 13:40that's between your eyes relationship And so
- 13:44remember what God has already revealed. Write
- 13:46down one truth about His character, one way He
- 13:50has been faithful before, and one promise that
- 13:53He's actually given in Scripture. And then rest
- 13:56without demanding an instant feeling. Sit quietly
- 13:59for two minutes. You're not trying to make God
- 14:02speak. You are practicing being with Him. In
- 14:06the silence, all you do is perceive and let your
- 14:11presence become a prayer. God, I'm here. And
- 14:16so here's your reflection question for this week.
- 14:18What conclusion have you drawn from God's silence?
- 14:21What is the conclusion supported by scripture
- 14:23or driven by fear? What do you need to tell God
- 14:26honestly? And what truth about His character
- 14:30can you hold onto for today? And so let us pray.
- 14:35Heavenly Father, we confess our silence frightens
- 14:38us. We want clarity. We want relief. We want
- 14:41a timeline. Whenever we don't receive them, we
- 14:45create explanations that make us feel rejected
- 14:47and forgotten. Bring us back to the cross, where
- 14:50your love has been made clear. Teach us to lament
- 14:53without walking away. Ask to ask without performance,
- 14:58to rest without pretending. to care for the weary
- 15:02listener in their body and mind and spirit. Remind
- 15:05us that hidden does not mean inactive or silent
- 15:07and that does not take away and mean absence.
- 15:10Hold on to us whenever we cannot hold ourselves.
- 15:13We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. I hope this
- 15:17message encouraged you. If this lesson inspired
- 15:20you, if you know someone that needs it, please
- 15:22share it. If this episode gave you something
- 15:25that you're caring, share it with somebody. Follow
- 15:28Fostering Faith. Visit our website, Fostering
- 15:30Faith Media, for companion and reflection resources.
- 15:33You can print them out, do a small group. It
- 15:35should be small group season. And until next
- 15:37week, we're going to be talking about how to
- 15:40wait without losing heart. When the question
- 15:42is answered in a delay, or we think it's a delay,
- 15:46until then, keep turning towards God, even if
- 15:49it is all you can do is pray, here I am. We love
- 15:53you guys. Have a great week.
