- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick. We are
- 0:17Speaker 1: headed into Memorial Day weekend. The Cubs are ten games
- 0:21Speaker 1: over five hundred. They're not fully healthy, but they got
- 0:26Speaker 1: Ian halfback. They won a series against the Marlins. They're
- 0:30Speaker 1: doing what they are supposed to do in this weaker stretch.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I believe they are now seven and two in that
- 0:40Speaker 1: twenty one game stretch against under five hundred teams. I'm
- 0:45Speaker 1: not even sure if the Reds are still under five hundred,
- 0:48Speaker 1: but they start three against the Reds, a talented team
- 0:53Speaker 1: that's probably not playing up fully up to its potential yet.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But the Cubs.
- 0:58Speaker 1: The Cubs are getting a lot of different contributions. Matt
- 1:02Speaker 1: Shaw's returned and he looks like the player that you know,
- 1:06Speaker 1: we kind of expected him to be, or.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Hoped he could be. The Cubs hoped he could be.
- 1:11Speaker 1: He is driving the ball to the right field with consistency.
- 1:15Speaker 1: It seems like every every other at bat is a
- 1:17Speaker 1: hard line drive to run. Daniel Palencia bounced back nicely
- 1:22Speaker 1: blew that game on Monday and comes back with a
- 1:25Speaker 1: real nice save, quick one two three inning. The bullpen
- 1:29Speaker 1: isn't perfect, but it has some talent there.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Brad Keller with.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Huge one and two thirds innings, just to I mean,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and obviously, you know, I don't think anybody that watches
- 1:41Speaker 1: baseball expected Kyle Tucker's slump to last much longer than
- 1:45Speaker 1: it did.
- 1:46Speaker 2: He is back to being Kyle Tucker.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Uh. Just you know, this is a this is what
- 1:51Speaker 1: they're not click. I wouldn't say they're clicking on all cylinders,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but they are. I mean, they won a game fourteen
- 1:57Speaker 1: to one, so I guess maybe they are. But they're also,
- 2:01Speaker 1: you know, winning the games they should be winning series,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and like I said, they're ten games over five hundred
- 2:07Speaker 1: and first place heading into kind of what do we
- 2:09Speaker 1: call this a mile marker?
- 2:11Speaker 2: I guess in the season.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I think to your point, I think that's the
- 2:15Speaker 3: most impressive part about this season thus far is that
- 2:19Speaker 3: they aren't really clicking on all cylinders. Like it doesn't
- 2:22Speaker 3: feel like the Cubs are kind of maxed out at
- 2:26Speaker 3: this point, like things have gone wrong and they've withstood
- 2:30Speaker 3: the injuries to show to Monaga and Justin Steele and
- 2:33Speaker 3: Javier assad and they've figured out to an extent what
- 2:38Speaker 3: works in the bullpen, you know, while acknowledging that there's
- 2:43Speaker 3: a lot of work to be done and they'll have
- 2:46Speaker 3: to bring in reinforcements here pretty soon. But like you know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: fifty games is not an insignificant amount of time off
- 2:56Speaker 3: the calendar. And when you see them ten over, when
- 3:00Speaker 3: you see how this offense has clicked, you see the
- 3:05Speaker 3: young talent rising to the surface, whether it's Kate Horton,
- 3:10Speaker 3: matchaw obviously Peek Armstrong becoming like an m VP candidate.
- 3:15Speaker 4: This is.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Pretty close to what the Cubs could have could have
- 3:20Speaker 3: hoped for back in Mesa, you know, boarding the plane
- 3:24Speaker 3: to Japan. Uh. It is, in just about every respect
- 3:29Speaker 3: a very impressive start to the season and one that
- 3:32Speaker 3: they think they can sustain.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't. I don't see any reason why they
- 3:39Speaker 1: can't sustain it outside of stacking up injuries.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I like the idea that you know, they've built some depth.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Here, they've they've they've won while not maybe playing their
- 3:52Speaker 1: best or having some injuries. Kyle Tucker is the best
- 3:56Speaker 1: player on this team I know, pe K Armstrong is
- 3:59Speaker 1: probably the least in war right now. But I mean
- 4:02Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker is the one that's established himself. Let's just
- 4:05Speaker 1: say that he has the the history of doing this.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So they have that guy, they have a breakout star,
- 4:12Speaker 1: they have they have a lot of elements that.
- 4:14Speaker 2: That lead to success.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I mean, we could talk about so many different aspects
- 4:18Speaker 1: of this team.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Really.
- 4:19Speaker 1: There's the the catching duo is just remarkable. Uh, the
- 4:24Speaker 1: youth that's coming up. Cad Horton is he was he dominant.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I wouldn't say that, but he's he's he's getting, he's
- 4:31Speaker 1: he's getting and miss and and he and he's you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: he's he's producing. I think that's important. I think there's
- 4:38Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of positives that you can
- 4:41Speaker 1: bring up about this team right now. Patrick, Let's take
- 4:43Speaker 1: a quick break and then we will start talking about
- 4:46Speaker 1: the Red Series with our buddy, c Trent Rosenkrantz, who
- 4:49Speaker 1: covers baseball for the Athletic.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Ft FAM.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Let's talk about the h O F app If you're
- 4:56Speaker 5: into parlays, but sometimes you're missing the mark more than
- 5:00Speaker 5: you would like to, can I introduce you to some
- 5:03Speaker 5: serious analytics on an app that is easy to read
- 5:07Speaker 5: and comprehend. And I'm sitting next to a man who
- 5:09Speaker 5: knows how to place a parlay.
- 5:11Speaker 6: Yeah, and the biggest thing is breaking down a parlay.
- 5:14Speaker 6: With this Hall of Fame app, there's the situations that
- 5:17Speaker 6: you'll be you'll find easier to do. It's very helpful
- 5:20Speaker 6: and understanding. And if you like, you know, gambling, sometimes
- 5:24Speaker 6: this is really good to know. So get on there,
- 5:26Speaker 6: get on that Hall of Fame app and check it out.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, this is info that will help you. Okay.

- 5:52Speaker 5: foul and you're all set.
- 5:55Speaker 2: All right, Patrick, Let's bring in Trent.
- 5:57Speaker 1: He has been covering the Reds or well, let's ask him,
- 6:01Speaker 1: because I don't know the number of years.
- 6:02Speaker 2: It's a long time.
- 6:03Speaker 1: It's longer than I've been around covering baseball, and Trent's
- 6:07Speaker 1: been doing it and doing it well, Trent, how are
- 6:11Speaker 1: you doing?
- 6:11Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us, man.
- 6:14Speaker 4: I'm okay. Besides you talking about how old I am.
- 6:18Speaker 7: You've been covering the Reds since before I was born.
- 6:24Speaker 7: And then of course, of course, the great thing about
- 6:26Speaker 7: this is I'm totally playing into it because somehow I
- 6:31Speaker 7: just unplugged my camera and I can't get the background off.
- 6:36Speaker 7: When it does, I've turned in my father. Is this
- 6:42Speaker 7: a bit, Trent?
- 6:44Speaker 4: It is not a bit?
- 6:45Speaker 7: Sadly, I wish it were, because that would make it
- 6:49Speaker 7: would just make me feel better. But nothing's going to
- 6:52Speaker 7: make me feel better. We're just all gonna die sometimes.
- 6:56Speaker 7: So sign of a biscuit. Oh my god, I am
- 7:01Speaker 7: just like playing every stereotype that you can. And oh no,
- 7:05Speaker 7: it makes it worse. Apparently all I did was accidentally
- 7:10Speaker 7: clicked stop cam. Oh my god, you have seen me
- 7:14Speaker 7: age in real time, and I did a background once.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I can't get it off, but only on Crow, not
- 7:20Speaker 4: on Safari.
- 7:22Speaker 7: Oh god, I am my father and I don't have
- 7:26Speaker 7: me to call. It's like when he died, his spirit
- 7:31Speaker 7: of technological ineptitude entered my body.
- 7:38Speaker 2: There we go, all right, we see how about that ram?
- 7:46Speaker 2: All right?
- 7:46Speaker 4: Trent?
- 7:47Speaker 1: The Cincinnati Reds. They're not a dominant ball club. They
- 7:50Speaker 1: are not a bad ball club. They are the Cincinnati Reds. Uh.
- 7:55Speaker 2: One thing that I'm gonna start.
- 7:57Speaker 7: Like technological knowledge, like I exist somewhat. It was much
- 8:03Speaker 7: better many years ago. The glory days were there. Now
- 8:10Speaker 7: it's sometimes you go right, sometimes you don't.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Fifty shot its coin flip.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Let's let's start with this starting pitching. It's good because yeah,
- 8:21Speaker 1: I did not expect them to be this good starting
- 8:24Speaker 1: pitching wise. Uh, one of the best rotations going right, Now,
- 8:29Speaker 1: what what's the standout is it? It's you know, I
- 8:32Speaker 1: think everyone knows that Hunter well maybe not everyone knows,
- 8:35Speaker 1: but most of people should know.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Hunter Green's had a breakout season.
- 8:38Speaker 1: He looks like, uh, you know, a stud what what
- 8:42Speaker 1: clicked for him? And then what's going on behind him
- 8:46Speaker 1: in that rotation?
- 8:47Speaker 7: Well, I mean, and it's pretty funny to like it's
- 8:50Speaker 7: a breakout year and last agreement the All Star team
- 8:53Speaker 7: like and so. But but it's a leveling up. You know,
- 8:56Speaker 7: there is an All Star level, but then there's a
- 8:58Speaker 7: young level.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Right. I mean we've I mean you have X amount.
- 9:02Speaker 7: I mean, what five hundred pitchers make the All Star
- 9:04Speaker 7: Game every year after injuries and replacements and all that.
- 9:08Speaker 7: So you know it's going from that top five percent,
- 9:12Speaker 7: top ten percent to the top one percent. And you know, honestly,
- 9:16Speaker 7: here's the thing with Hunter Green that is I pointed
- 9:18Speaker 7: this out and I kind of said it to him,
- 9:20Speaker 7: and he was like, yeah, I think you're right. Like,
- 9:23Speaker 7: for a twenty five year old, the majority of his
- 9:29Speaker 7: competitive pitches that he's thrown in his life in games
- 9:34Speaker 7: that you would consider competitive, have come at the big
- 9:36Speaker 7: league level because he was very he was monitored very
- 9:43Speaker 7: tightly as as a prep player. He was a two
- 9:46Speaker 7: way guy coming out of the draft. You know, he
- 9:50Speaker 7: didn't pitch that much for his high school. I think
- 9:52Speaker 7: it was like, I don't know, it might have been
- 9:54Speaker 7: like eighty innings total in high school, then was short
- 9:58Speaker 7: in the minor League's missed a year with tom Me
- 10:00Speaker 7: John and then debuted at what twenty two, twenty three,
- 10:03Speaker 7: twenty one, twenty two, twenty three something around there. So
- 10:06Speaker 7: he's a twenty five year old who the majority of
- 10:09Speaker 7: his competitive pitches in his life have been at the
- 10:12Speaker 7: big league level. That's that's a learning curve, right, Like
- 10:16Speaker 7: you kind of think about that and it's just mind blowing,
- 10:20Speaker 7: and so he's kind of it's it's funny to say,
- 10:23Speaker 7: but I think the biggest difference is is he trusts
- 10:27Speaker 7: his stuff, and you know, it's that's a learning process
- 10:31Speaker 7: because you know, when he got to the big league
- 10:35Speaker 7: level for the first time in his life, he couldn't
- 10:37Speaker 7: just outstuff people. You know, he wasn't so much more
- 10:40Speaker 7: dominant than everybody else he faced, and it took some
- 10:43Speaker 7: time to figure that out. And the thing that's different
- 10:47Speaker 7: with him if you look at his strike throwing, he
- 10:49Speaker 7: throws strikes and says, hey, hit it. I'm not going
- 10:52Speaker 7: to let you off the hook by throwing it out
- 10:54Speaker 7: of the zone. No, I don't care two strikes. I'm
- 10:57Speaker 7: still gonna throw on the zone. Do your best.
- 11:00Speaker 4: This is one O two yeah, and then and and
- 11:04Speaker 4: and that might not be his best pitch. Wow, I mean,
- 11:09Speaker 4: oh go ahead.
- 11:11Speaker 1: No, I mean I think that's a that's something a
- 11:13Speaker 1: lot of young pictures need to learn, is when when
- 11:17Speaker 1: they have nasty stuff, it's just hey, you throw strikes
- 11:20Speaker 1: with it, don't be afraid. Just you can you can
- 11:22Speaker 1: hammer the zone. These guys can't handle your stuff majority
- 11:25Speaker 1: of time.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Yeah, just that what.
- 11:30Speaker 7: Was was being a being a hitter taught him like it,
- 11:33Speaker 7: thing's really really hard. If I just throw it. You
- 11:38Speaker 7: know a lot of these guys are gonna hit it,
- 11:40Speaker 7: but a lot of them aren't. And even if they
- 11:43Speaker 7: do hit it, okay, so what there's nine guys and
- 11:46Speaker 7: a fence behind me. Now that that is tough for
- 11:48Speaker 7: a great American ballpark because that fence is so far
- 11:53Speaker 7: and so you you lose some of those but like
- 11:55Speaker 7: that's also part of the maturation process. The best pitchers
- 11:59Speaker 7: I've been around in this ballpark, the Johnny Quato's, the
- 12:03Speaker 7: Luis Castillo's, the you know, whoever you name that they've had,
- 12:09Speaker 7: they don't care about the park. It just doesn't They
- 12:12Speaker 7: don't think about it because, you know, it's like it's
- 12:16Speaker 7: like playing with a bad defense. You can't get upset
- 12:21Speaker 7: about I don't know, name your your butcher in the
- 12:25Speaker 7: field here, but you can't be upset when they hit
- 12:30Speaker 7: the ball to the butcher and he butchers it. And
- 12:33Speaker 7: it's kind of like the same thing. So you just
- 12:35Speaker 7: kind of like, okay, what can what can I control? Well,
- 12:38Speaker 7: hopefully if it's you know, I'm not gonna throw it
- 12:40Speaker 7: inside to a right handed hitter if my butcher's at
- 12:42Speaker 7: third pace, you know, or in left field, and so
- 12:46Speaker 7: you just kind of like take that into consideration. But
- 12:48Speaker 7: every once in a while it happens, you hit it
- 12:50Speaker 7: there he boots it, and and and for Great American Ballpark, Yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 7: sometimes they'll hit it and it goes in that first row.
- 12:58Speaker 7: I mean the amount, the amount of times a pitch
- 13:00Speaker 7: sure has told me over my how many years, like
- 13:02Speaker 7: seventy years you said, so hot. That's just like you know,
- 13:07Speaker 7: that doesn't go out anywhere else, you know, And that
- 13:10Speaker 7: was even in the dead ball era when I started.
- 13:13Speaker 4: You know, So.
- 13:16Speaker 8: What look at that beard you've been growing it. Yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 8: it's never been cut. This is one hundred years of growth.
- 13:26Speaker 8: Only the beard grows, not's my abilities or my maturity
- 13:29Speaker 8: or anything else, cud just the waistline.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Well, I'm curious, Trent, when you know the Reds you
- 13:37Speaker 3: talk about extracting more from their young talent or having
- 13:40Speaker 3: that mentality of controlling that you can control. Where does
- 13:44Speaker 3: Terry francona factor into this?
- 13:47Speaker 7: What is he like to cover on a day to
- 13:50Speaker 7: day basis? You know, I keep kind of going back
- 13:54Speaker 7: to again, this is before your guys times, you know.
- 14:00Speaker 7: But but Dusty Baker. Uh, there's a lot of similarities
- 14:05Speaker 7: with Dusty in that he is confident in who he
- 14:10Speaker 7: is and his decisions, and he will take in other stuff,
- 14:13Speaker 7: but ultimately it lies on him. And and he's not
- 14:17Speaker 7: trying to prove anything to anybody because he's proven to everybody.
- 14:23Speaker 4: You know. These are both Hall of Fame managers and
- 14:24Speaker 4: for a reason, and so.
- 14:25Speaker 7: They're you know, what if if Nick Crawl decides, you
- 14:30Speaker 7: know what, this just isn't working, Hey, Tito, thanks and uh,
- 14:34Speaker 7: go on your merry way.
- 14:36Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sure he'd be like disappointed that he
- 14:39Speaker 4: didn't get it a chance, But it's not gonna kill him.
- 14:43Speaker 7: You know, he's got he's got money, he's got uh,
- 14:46Speaker 7: he's already got.
- 14:47Speaker 4: A Hall of Fame resume whatever.
- 14:49Speaker 7: So like, I think there's something about I don't know
- 14:54Speaker 7: if there's a thing about managing scared or but there
- 14:57Speaker 7: is a managery managing cautious for sure or or whatever.
- 15:02Speaker 7: And certain guys, and quite honestly, like Craig Council has
- 15:06Speaker 7: that as well, where it's just like, what's you gonna do?
- 15:09Speaker 7: You know what, you fire me if I want a
- 15:12Speaker 7: job a job the next time, it's okay. You know,
- 15:16Speaker 7: It's not like us who's like, oh you fire me,
- 15:19Speaker 7: Well crap, what else am I qualified to do? I mean, Patrick,
- 15:28Speaker 7: you're qualified for anything.
- 15:30Speaker 4: What are we gonna do? So what else? I would
- 15:38Speaker 4: rather do nothing?
- 15:39Speaker 7: But other than nothing because it doesn't pay well, I've
- 15:41Speaker 7: tried it unemployment. Uh, the hours are great, the benefits
- 15:47Speaker 7: are and pay is pat so I don't recommend. However,
- 15:54Speaker 7: the benefits, I mean, the hours are great. But but
- 15:58Speaker 7: you know, that's the thing. It's like, I think there's
- 16:00Speaker 7: something about he's not gonna panic. Oh you know, we
- 16:03Speaker 7: just dropped two with three to the pirates. There's no
- 16:06Speaker 7: panic in Tito. He's been around this a long time,
- 16:10Speaker 7: and it's kind of it's been fun for me because
- 16:12Speaker 7: as as aht of noted, I've I've been around for
- 16:14Speaker 7: a long time, so like, you know, I go back
- 16:17Speaker 7: to my Sparky Anderson days or Fred Hutchinson or whoever
- 16:19Speaker 7: else was managing, and and like.
- 16:23Speaker 4: It's just like they know what they're doing.
- 16:27Speaker 7: And it's funny because you guys have been around enough
- 16:31Speaker 7: when you have covered someone for a long time that
- 16:34Speaker 7: you know not only the answers but you know what
- 16:36Speaker 7: questions and what type of answer questions will get the
- 16:39Speaker 7: answer you're looking for. And it's been kind of fun
- 16:42Speaker 7: to watch others who who are not as seasoned as
- 16:47Speaker 7: I am. Is that the right word? Uh Like, just
- 16:52Speaker 7: figure out what Tito's gonna answer and what he's not.
- 16:55Speaker 7: And that is one of those things. I always love
- 16:58Speaker 7: you get the comments, so you don't ask the hard questions. No,
- 17:01Speaker 7: I asked the questions differently. I also don't always ask
- 17:04Speaker 7: them on camera, thank you very much. Uh And and
- 17:07Speaker 7: just because you ask somebody a question doesn't give you
- 17:10Speaker 7: doesn't mean they're gonna give you the answer to.
- 17:11Speaker 2: That you want.
- 17:13Speaker 7: So it's one of those things. It's just kind of fun.
- 17:16Speaker 7: There's there's a learning curve with any new manager. I mean,
- 17:18Speaker 7: you guys felt that last year, right for sure, you know,
- 17:21Speaker 7: and and so for covering someone it is just a
- 17:27Speaker 7: little different.
- 17:30Speaker 4: But it's been good.
- 17:31Speaker 7: He's you know, I'm pretty comfortable with the guy who's
- 17:34Speaker 7: an old school baseball guy.
- 17:35Speaker 4: You get, you know, you have that rhythm that.
- 17:37Speaker 7: You can get into and what's gonna what's gonna work,
- 17:42Speaker 7: and what's gonna not.
- 17:43Speaker 4: So it's been fun. He's He's obviously good at what
- 17:46Speaker 4: he does.
- 17:48Speaker 7: So whether they're you know, five hundred or five games
- 17:54Speaker 7: under five hundred or five games over five hundred after
- 17:57Speaker 7: sixty games or whatever it is, you know what he
- 18:01Speaker 7: knows that's sixty games and there's no panic. And this
- 18:05Speaker 7: team has kind of been up and down. But you
- 18:09Speaker 7: look at the roster and like, Okay, yeah, this is
- 18:12Speaker 7: a team that's probably a five hundred ish team. If
- 18:16Speaker 7: things break their way, sure they can win eighty eight
- 18:21Speaker 7: ninety games. If they don't, they can lose eighty eight
- 18:25Speaker 7: ninety games. And I think we'll see that over the year.
- 18:30Speaker 7: And I'm just I think it's nice. It is interesting
- 18:35Speaker 7: to have someone who has that perspective that I think
- 18:42Speaker 7: Tito wants to win every game, but he also realizes
- 18:47Speaker 7: and this is a line I've used many times and
- 18:49Speaker 7: I'm a big believer, and it is a manager's game
- 18:52Speaker 7: in the regular season isn't to win every game. It's
- 18:55Speaker 7: to win the most games. And those are two different things.
- 18:58Speaker 7: Now postseason win.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Sure, let's take a quick break, and I have a
- 19:04Speaker 1: question about the offense when we get back.
- 19:05Speaker 5: Trent, I just want to say, before Arena Club, if
- 19:08Speaker 5: you were trying to very actively buy sell trade. It
- 19:12Speaker 5: was very complicated and used a lot of mail that
- 19:15Speaker 5: was unnecessary.
- 19:16Speaker 7: I don't know I even know how to do it,
- 19:17Speaker 7: But I'm glad we have Arena Club now because it's
- 19:19Speaker 7: a one stop shop for everything card related.
- 19:21Speaker 5: It is and right now you can get twenty percent
- 19:23Speaker 5: off your first slab pack or your first card purchase
- 19:26Speaker 5: by going to Arena club dot com. Slash foul, use
- 19:30Speaker 5: code foul. If you're a collector, you've got to check
- 19:33Speaker 5: out Arena Club.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Go get after it, all right, Trent.
- 19:38Speaker 1: The offense for me is where I thought this team
- 19:41Speaker 1: would be stronger. Obviously, Elie d la Cruz is not
- 19:46Speaker 1: having the type of season that some people expected. I
- 19:50Speaker 1: thought Matt McClain was going to be a huge catalyst
- 19:53Speaker 1: for this team. He's struggling. Will Bentson I think just
- 19:56Speaker 1: recently came back and one player of the week, that's
- 19:59Speaker 1: right right He's so is the offense trending in a
- 20:04Speaker 1: better direction right now? And maybe I haven't noticed? And
- 20:08Speaker 1: what's up with McLain and Ellie da la Cruz Because
- 20:10Speaker 1: I feel like, especially McLain, I thought he could be
- 20:13Speaker 1: like the guy that kind of stabilized things and got
- 20:17Speaker 1: them to be a more consistent offense.
- 20:20Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm a big believer. I buy long term Matt McClain.
- 20:24Speaker 4: I just do. I'm a big believer in Matt McClain.
- 20:28Speaker 7: I think a lot of it is missing a year,
- 20:30Speaker 7: and like not only missing a year, but missing your
- 20:33Speaker 7: second year in the big leagues. That second year in
- 20:35Speaker 7: the big leagues is so difficult, and you add going
- 20:40Speaker 7: around for that second year plus missing a year and
- 20:44Speaker 7: being some time off you've got to give.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I am not panicking over Matt McClain.
- 20:50Speaker 7: I think Tito has kind of done the right thing
- 20:52Speaker 7: where Okay, he put him in there at the beginning
- 20:56Speaker 7: he struggled, all right, Now not just put him at
- 20:58Speaker 7: the bottom of the order, you know, and and let
- 21:00Speaker 7: him go through.
- 21:01Speaker 4: The Other thing with Matt is is I'm.
- 21:04Speaker 7: Gonna look at it, but it just feels like he has.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Hit the ball hard and gotten some bad luck.
- 21:15Speaker 7: And you know, nobody ever wants to hear that, right, Yeah,
- 21:20Speaker 7: nobody loves hearing that, But it's also true sometimes because
- 21:23Speaker 7: in the end that's what you need to do. You
- 21:26Speaker 7: need to, like, you hit the ball hard, and you
- 21:28Speaker 7: hit it online and if you do that over time,
- 21:32Speaker 7: you'll be all right.
- 21:33Speaker 4: And and so like you know, he's he really is.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Like just.
- 21:42Speaker 7: I'm looking at his his Wow, his swift right and
- 21:46Speaker 7: strikeout right are terrible. Yeah, but he's a good He's
- 21:52Speaker 7: hitting the ball hard right, that's the thing. It's just
- 21:56Speaker 7: making that contact. And I think that's timing right. We've
- 22:00Speaker 7: seen he can do it. It's just getting in that groove.
- 22:03Speaker 7: And and I think that'll come around. But that's me.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Uh And and as far as Ellie goes is this
- 22:12Speaker 1: just is he And just like a mercurial player player
- 22:15Speaker 1: in general.
- 22:16Speaker 7: Well, I think you know, a guy like Ellie is
- 22:19Speaker 7: going to have some streaks.
- 22:21Speaker 4: And I think you know he he you know every day.
- 22:26Speaker 7: That you show up and see him on the field,
- 22:29Speaker 7: he could be the greatest player you've ever seen, right,
- 22:34Speaker 7: And I think you've seen some strides in. You know,
- 22:38Speaker 7: as bad as it looks, his strikeout rate is gone
- 22:42Speaker 7: from uh, the sixth percentile to the eleventh and Okay,
- 22:50Speaker 7: that's still not good, but you're getting better. You're seeing
- 22:54Speaker 7: those improvements. I think a lot of this is seeing
- 22:57Speaker 7: him try to become a more complete hitter, and that
- 23:01Speaker 7: has been helpful. He's you also have seen some what's
- 23:07Speaker 7: it called what I'm talking about to the you know,
- 23:10Speaker 7: you've seen some progress on the right side of the
- 23:12Speaker 7: belt of the plate batting right handed. So I think
- 23:15Speaker 7: that's good as well. And there's stuff and again I'm
- 23:21Speaker 7: I don't like ever reacting to small little bits, because
- 23:26Speaker 7: that's when, like you know, that's what observation bias is right,
- 23:30Speaker 7: it's overreaction to small samples, and baseball is a long
- 23:36Speaker 7: term I've seen better at bats from from Ellie de
- 23:39Speaker 7: la Cruz. I don't think there's anything that he's doing worse.
- 23:45Speaker 7: I think he actually looks better because he's more balanced,
- 23:50Speaker 7: you know, it's not as up and down, up and down,
- 23:54Speaker 7: and and so again, maybe maybe it's me just being
- 23:59Speaker 7: like he and not wanting to look up why it's different.
- 24:01Speaker 4: But maybe it's just.
- 24:02Speaker 7: Like I believe in these two guys and I have
- 24:06Speaker 7: for a long time, and fifty games doesn't doesn't do
- 24:11Speaker 7: anything for me, just as like I again, Will Benson
- 24:15Speaker 7: had a fantastic week. Do I think he is the
- 24:19Speaker 7: second coming of you know, you know it could Is
- 24:23Speaker 7: he the second coming of of of Eli del Cruz?
- 24:29Speaker 7: Or is he the second coming of Aristide Sequino. Yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 7: you know, and and.
- 24:35Speaker 4: I'm not. I think if there's anybody.
- 24:38Speaker 7: Who can do it through your will and adjustments, it
- 24:42Speaker 7: is Will Benson, who's just an incredible, incredible young man.
- 24:47Speaker 7: A young man. He's twenty six. Jesus, how old am I?
- 24:53Speaker 7: Why are you guys picking on me like this?
- 24:55Speaker 4: So, yeah, that's the thing.
- 24:58Speaker 7: It's like, those are two guys that I just don't
- 25:00Speaker 7: worry about long term.
- 25:01Speaker 4: I think they're going to figure it out. I mean.
- 25:03Speaker 7: And the other part is if you have them on
- 25:06Speaker 7: the field, they both changed the game.
- 25:08Speaker 4: They really do.
- 25:10Speaker 7: It's it's a matter of getting on base, and that's
- 25:13Speaker 7: going to be important. But Ellie de la Cruz is
- 25:17Speaker 7: the one of the best base runners in baseball. He's
- 25:20Speaker 7: taking fewer chances on the bases, which I think is
- 25:24Speaker 7: good and bad. You know, like anything, it has its
- 25:27Speaker 7: positives and negatives, and he's kind of reflecting more of
- 25:33Speaker 7: what the manager's asking.
- 25:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:34Speaker 7: So David Bell was a big believer in, Hey, we're
- 25:38Speaker 7: gonna press and sometimes we're gonna get thrown out.
- 25:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 25:41Speaker 7: David Bell, like the contact play was on anytime you're
- 25:44Speaker 7: at third base, and you know, Tito's a little less aggressive,
- 25:52Speaker 7: and he'll say that we're still aggressive, but within reason. Well,
- 25:56Speaker 7: you know, previously they just said, hey, Ellie, do what
- 25:59Speaker 7: you want. If you think you can get it, get it,
- 26:02Speaker 7: whereas maybe Tito's messages closer to if you know you
- 26:06Speaker 7: can get it, get it right. There's a there is
- 26:10Speaker 7: a slight difference, and so we've seen that.
- 26:12Speaker 4: And it's funny.
- 26:12Speaker 7: I've like got all these things like why isn't Ellie
- 26:14Speaker 7: hitting home runs? Why isn't he stealing basis, like, well,
- 26:17Speaker 7: he's got more home runs on the team than anybody
- 26:19Speaker 7: on the team, and he has more stolen bases than
- 26:21Speaker 7: anybody in the league. Okay, you know it's it's it's
- 26:25Speaker 7: all about expectations. That's kind of I think our expectations
- 26:32Speaker 7: for Ellie de la Cruz are I mean, they're show
- 26:36Speaker 7: Hay levels. Yeah, And and is that fair? And with
- 26:40Speaker 7: show hey, show hey it. You know where was show
- 26:45Speaker 7: hey at twenty two? Oh he was in Japan. He
- 26:47Speaker 7: wasn't even overhear yet, you know so I think that's
- 26:51Speaker 7: a lot of it is is what we expect. And
- 26:53Speaker 7: baseball is funny that way, whereas, like you know, most
- 26:57Speaker 7: other sports, you go to the gaming you expect. You know,
- 27:00Speaker 7: you're gonna see your guy and he's gonna you know,
- 27:03Speaker 7: Lebron James is gonna Lebron James that night. Well, baseball
- 27:07Speaker 7: you can go to like you can go to a
- 27:10Speaker 7: whole Angels series, well back in the day and say
- 27:13Speaker 7: Angels and say Mike Trout and he didn't Mike Trout.
- 27:15Speaker 7: Or or my aunt here's a better example. My aunt
- 27:19Speaker 7: went and it lives in Arizona. She went to a
- 27:22Speaker 7: Diamondbacks Dodgers game last year.
- 27:24Speaker 4: She got so.
- 27:25Speaker 7: Annoyed because the fans right behind her were just screaming,
- 27:27Speaker 7: show hey the whole time or no, it's oh Tony,
- 27:31Speaker 7: because I can hear her say it, and she's like,
- 27:34Speaker 7: and he.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Went over four, he didn't get a hit. He staks.
- 27:37Speaker 7: It's like, I think my aunt, like she's she's a
- 27:44Speaker 7: brilliant person, and I will trust her on anything about energy,
- 27:49Speaker 7: uh and and and those kind of things. She's an engineer,
- 27:53Speaker 7: but I don't trust her about baseball.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Call In terms of expectations here, I feel like the
- 28:02Speaker 3: Reds are one of those teams in the middle, like
- 28:07Speaker 3: that it's not as hopeless as Pittsburgh. They have not
- 28:11Speaker 3: maybe overachieved to the extent that the Brewers have in
- 28:14Speaker 3: recent years.
- 28:15Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 28:15Speaker 3: When I watched the Reds from this distance, they always
- 28:19Speaker 3: have like nice, interesting position players. You have a pitching now,
- 28:24Speaker 3: they're attractive enough to draw Tito off his couch in Arizona. Like,
- 28:31Speaker 3: what is the scenario in which the Reds catch fire
- 28:35Speaker 3: and ruin the cub.
- 28:36Speaker 4: Season and chase them down in the division? Like, how
- 28:39Speaker 4: does that happen?
- 28:41Speaker 7: Okay, first, Ellie gets a little more consistent. Matt McClain
- 28:48Speaker 7: is Matt McClain. Austin Hayes stays healthy because when he's
- 28:54Speaker 7: been on the field this year, man, he hits Gavin
- 28:57Speaker 7: Lux continues to Gavin luck Bucks like it's I don't
- 29:02Speaker 7: think it's that far away. You know, you can squint
- 29:05Speaker 7: and see it. I'm not betting on it because I
- 29:09Speaker 7: know too much about baseball to ever bet on baseball
- 29:12Speaker 7: or in sports in general.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Because it's just I have long enough.
- 29:20Speaker 7: I remember his rookie year, Sid I bet this kid
- 29:24Speaker 7: will never remount to anything, and I was wrong. No,
- 29:28Speaker 7: So so like that that's part of it, and it's just, yeah,
- 29:32Speaker 7: I can see it.
- 29:33Speaker 4: There's a there's a way where it happens.
- 29:35Speaker 7: And in this division you don't look at any team
- 29:40Speaker 7: other than the Pirates and say, I know what's gonna happen.
- 29:44Speaker 7: And even the Pirates you had some hope a while early,
- 29:48Speaker 7: real early, it's gone and shattered like you know it does.
- 29:54Speaker 7: But like every other team, like the Cubs, I think
- 29:58Speaker 7: they're better offensively and don't know if that pitching holds
- 30:03Speaker 7: up all year. The Brewers, it looks like okay, I
- 30:09Speaker 7: mean they're they're kind of where the Cardinals were a
- 30:12Speaker 7: couple of years ago. It's like, oh your depeomagic died?
- 30:15Speaker 4: What happened?
- 30:16Speaker 6: You know?
- 30:17Speaker 7: And the Cardinals they're not very good. You look at
- 30:21Speaker 7: them and like they got hot and they did.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Well, But are they good? No, I don't know that
- 30:26Speaker 4: anybody in this division is good.
- 30:30Speaker 7: Every four of the teams in the division can be good,
- 30:35Speaker 7: But is anybody like even what are we fifty games
- 30:39Speaker 7: in somewhere around there?
- 30:40Speaker 4: Like where are we like?
- 30:44Speaker 7: And take away what I just said about betting and
- 30:46Speaker 7: that you shouldn't do that, although our sponsors would disagree,
- 30:49Speaker 7: I'm sure like, is there any team that you would
- 30:52Speaker 7: look at in this division right now and say, okay,
- 30:54Speaker 7: they're going to win this division.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I mean, since we're on a Cubs podcast, I'm gonna
- 31:02Speaker 1: say that the Cubs have the advantage.
- 31:04Speaker 2: But I don't. I'd never advantage, Like, yeah, you know
- 31:09Speaker 2: what they have.
- 31:10Speaker 4: They have the money advantage right now.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're going to and they're going to be
- 31:14Speaker 1: very aggressive. Oh we lost Trent. Uh, well, I'm assuming
- 31:20Speaker 1: he doesn't know how to use technology.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Oh wait, he's he's back. Did you just did you
- 31:26Speaker 2: just remove yourself?
- 31:27Speaker 4: Trent?
- 31:31Speaker 1: All right, well we'll.
- 31:36Speaker 4: Take we'll take the head. I tried to do something.
- 31:42Speaker 2: All right, well this is oh my goodness. We're gonna
- 31:46Speaker 2: leave you with this.
- 31:47Speaker 4: Trent. Trent over under on Connor Joe.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Hits seven this weekend. He is a Cubs killer.
- 31:52Speaker 1: You may not be aware of that since he's just
- 31:55Speaker 1: joined the Reds, but he will. He will kill the
- 31:57Speaker 1: Cubs this weekend. Just to give you a heads up.
- 32:01Speaker 1: All the all the listeners right now are nodding along
- 32:05Speaker 1: and cursing Connor Joe's name because I I've watched him.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Now.
- 32:10Speaker 1: This will be the third or fourth team, maybe the
- 32:12Speaker 1: fourth team he's been with, Yes, fourth team because.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Red when he's a rule five pick by the Reds
- 32:20Speaker 4: one year.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Okay, but I've seen him.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I've seen him beat up on the cubs, with the Rockies,
- 32:27Speaker 1: the Pirates, the Padres, and now it'll be the Reds.
- 32:30Speaker 2: He will he.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Will come up with a big hit, or he will
- 32:33Speaker 1: hit a three run homer. Something will happen. It's just
- 32:36Speaker 1: the reality of the situation. I'm just preparing you for that.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Get your Connor Joe's story written.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I love that, you know.
- 32:45Speaker 7: I say, hey, never bet on baseball. That's a terrible idea,
- 32:49Speaker 7: And yet here we are yet another betting line, the over.
- 32:55Speaker 7: So I will show you, like how brilliant I am
- 32:58Speaker 7: that I know I'm dumb, and I'm gonna go with under,
- 33:03Speaker 7: which means over is gonna win, and I will look dumb.
- 33:07Speaker 7: But hey, man, that's what I've done this whole time,
- 33:09Speaker 7: Like everybody was like, why do you have this idiot on?
- 33:12Speaker 7: He can't even work a computer, And and for that,
- 33:17Speaker 7: I just said, get off my lawn, crazy kids.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Grant, thanks so much for joining us. Make sure to
- 33:23Speaker 1: read Trent's work over at the Athletic. Appreciate your time. Man,
- 33:26Speaker 1: We'll see you soon.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Take it easy, say you guys, all right? Patrick here
- 33:32Speaker 2: we go.
- 33:33Speaker 1: We're gonna do our arena club player spotlight. Okay, Patrick,
- 33:43Speaker 1: I think the player we're gonna focus on today is
- 33:47Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker. Kyle Tucker had six hits, six hits against Miami.
- 33:55Speaker 1: He was kind of the guy that got things going
- 34:01Speaker 1: on Wednesday and Tuesday and Wednesday he got the he
- 34:04Speaker 1: got the offense going. He was the entire offense for
- 34:07Speaker 1: the most part on Wednesday.
- 34:09Speaker 5: Uh.
- 34:10Speaker 1: He has a one fifty seven way to run screat
- 34:12Speaker 1: at plus slash land two seventy eight, three eighty seven,
- 34:15Speaker 1: five point fifty two. This man is everything the Cubs wanted.
- 34:21Speaker 1: They paid a hefty price. You know, Cam Smith is
- 34:26Speaker 1: maybe not tearing the cover off the ball right now,
- 34:27Speaker 1: but he's a young, talented kid.
- 34:30Speaker 2: Uh.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Esak Pritis is doing everything everyone expected he would in Uh.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Uh is it DACD what's the name of the park?
- 34:38Speaker 2: What in Houston let let let.
- 34:41Speaker 4: On Field? Maybe I don't know.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Uh.
- 34:44Speaker 1: And you know, Hayden was nesk. He's on the shelf
- 34:46Speaker 1: with TJ. But still they gave up a lot to
- 34:48Speaker 1: get Kyle Tucker. I don't think anybody nobody should be complaining.
- 34:55Speaker 1: This is just a remarkable level of production.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yes, I'm trying to be less online, but you know,
- 35:04Speaker 3: his Tucker's performance dipped a little bit, and I think
- 35:07Speaker 3: there was some chatter on social media about that. I
- 35:11Speaker 3: just think it's impressive what he brings to the table
- 35:16Speaker 3: every day, and that even you know, if he wasn't
- 35:20Speaker 3: maybe crushing the ball there for a little bit, you know,
- 35:24Speaker 3: a couple games in late April, there are pockets in
- 35:29Speaker 3: May still contributing at a really high level, taking his walks,
- 35:35Speaker 3: setting an example, taking pressure off teammates. I think, like
- 35:42Speaker 3: we started the show this season, while he's had some
- 35:47Speaker 3: unscripted moments thus far, the overall body of work the
- 35:51Speaker 3: Cubs would have taken it in spring training, and like
- 35:54Speaker 3: Kyle Tucker is at the top of that list, like
- 35:58Speaker 3: really well liked teammates, like a tone setter for the
- 36:04Speaker 3: entire tire lineup.
- 36:05Speaker 4: I think what Joe Madden.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Liked to call a force multiplier who just makes the
- 36:10Speaker 3: players around him better, Like the Cubs pieces just fit
- 36:15Speaker 3: nicer because of what he does in so many phases
- 36:21Speaker 3: of the game.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I absolutely agree force multiplayers a good way to
- 36:25Speaker 1: describe it. Takes the offense to another level. Obviously, young
- 36:29Speaker 1: guys stepping up. He's not alone in this lineup, but
- 36:32Speaker 1: he deserves a lot of credit for kind of bringing
- 36:35Speaker 1: it to another level. All right, Patrick, let's check out
- 36:40Speaker 1: the slab pack we ripped from our friends with Arena Club.
- 36:48Speaker 1: So let's see who do we got here. This is
- 36:52Speaker 1: not Kyle Tucker from my understanding, it is Jacob Robinson.
- 36:57Speaker 2: That is a fancy card.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I'm a card collector, Patrick, I collected a lot of
- 37:02Speaker 1: cards as a kid. I started collecting again in the
- 37:05Speaker 1: pandemic with my son, so I'm into this.
- 37:08Speaker 2: You know you can you can trade this.
- 37:11Speaker 1: You can use the buyback program from Arena Club to
- 37:14Speaker 1: get Kyle Tucker's card if that's if you so want
- 37:18Speaker 1: to these are This is fun stuff. I love collecting
- 37:22Speaker 1: with my kid. He actually got a bunch of stuff
- 37:24Speaker 1: from his grandpa recently. Even though he's a teenager now,
- 37:27Speaker 1: he's still you know, I don't want to call him
- 37:28Speaker 1: out to his friends. Maybe maybe his friends don't want
- 37:30Speaker 1: me to say this, but he still opens cards with me.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I think it's fun.
- 37:36Speaker 5: I just want to say before Arena Club.
- 37:39Speaker 2: What I wanted to hit.
- 37:41Speaker 1: Right now, you can get twenty percent of your first

- 37:58Speaker 1: I mean, baseball cards I think are just kind of
- 38:00Speaker 1: the heartbeat of baseball and my youth. I know that
- 38:04Speaker 1: I did a lot of it with my dad, and
- 38:06Speaker 1: I do it a lot with my son now, and
- 38:08Speaker 1: it's still fun for me.
- 38:09Speaker 3: I've had a similar experience of you know, did it
- 38:14Speaker 3: as a kid and then as my son got into
- 38:16Speaker 3: the game. Like, it's kind of amazing how cards are
- 38:20Speaker 3: kind of timeless and how once you're at a certain age,
- 38:23Speaker 3: like it really draws you in. And to get a
- 38:27Speaker 3: Jackie Robinson, you know, a real piece of history. It's
- 38:31Speaker 3: pretty cool.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, Patrick, We will be back next week
- 38:37Speaker 1: with more episodes. We will have a weekend slate of
- 38:41Speaker 1: Reds games. We'll see the Reds are always dangerous and
- 38:43Speaker 1: they're painting the Cubs, but whether they're good or bad,
- 38:46Speaker 1: so you know, we'll see how this weekend goes. The
- 38:49Speaker 1: Cubs have been playing well through like maybe not. I
- 38:52Speaker 1: think we both agree they're not playing their best baseball.
- 38:55Speaker 1: But they're winning the games against the bad teams, and
- 38:57Speaker 1: that's so huge. We cannot forget twenty two three and
- 39:00Speaker 1: how that what happened when they sunk against some some
- 39:04Speaker 1: bad teams early on in the season and that bit them.
- 39:07Speaker 2: So win these.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Games, win series, try and try and get through this
- 39:11Speaker 1: easy stretch looking good. Uh and then and then you know,
- 39:14Speaker 1: we'll see where they are come June or yeah, June
- 39:17Speaker 1: and July.
