- 1:06Good morning again, Jack. You know we've been talking
- 1:08backstage, but wanted to welcome our audience in on today, this
- 1:12first weekly episode. Well, no, today's Wednesday, 2nd
- 1:15weekly episode. Lose track of time here today
- 1:19coming up on May 21st, 2025. We hope everyone's doing well,
- 1:24Jack. Of course, our NBA playoffs got
- 1:26off to a a, not really a shocking start.
- 1:30Of course, the Thunder and their nemesis, as we should say at
- 1:35this point. Well, I don't know the Minnesota
- 1:37Timberwolves exactly, a nemesis of OKC.
- 1:40I can't see any rivalry there. I could maybe see a little more
- 1:45of a rivalry, the Timberwolves and the Lakers, who the
- 1:48Timberwolves knocked off in the playoffs.
- 1:51But OKC was true to who they won the second-half of the game.
- 1:56Yesterday, they broke open a close game.
- 1:59All of a sudden, the Timberwolves had a hard time
- 2:01making a basket, in large part because of OKC smothering
- 2:05defense. And that's who they are.
- 2:08I mean that they don't have a lot of stars and that can have
- 2:10SGA, one of the best players in the game, obviously, But beyond
- 2:15him there's just a bunch of very good, good players like Chad
- 2:20Holmesbren, a very good player, Jay Williams, very good player.
- 2:24But it they went, they went on defense for the most part.
- 2:29They know how to play the game. They play old fashioned
- 2:32basketball, OKC and it showed in the second-half.
- 2:35What was Rudy Gobert weather? Rudy Gobert for a while?
- 2:41Rudy Gobert was looking so good that Shaquille O'Neal, who is
- 2:45one of his biggest critics, that I can't believe I'm saying this.
- 2:49Rudy Gobert turned into a force. He rooted Gold Bear was swept it
- 3:00in an ice cream cone. Yeah, he was.
- 3:02He was like a cotton ball. Shaq jinxed him.
- 3:06You know, when whenever you have a situation that somebody's been
- 3:09literally like your biggest critic and you finally get that
- 3:13praise or whether it kind of pumps your head up and as a
- 3:16result, he flopped. And so now today, Shaq's going
- 3:19to be talking about him the opposite.
- 3:21Like, OK, I was wrong. Clearly I should have kept my
- 3:24opinion and myself. I was right all along about the
- 3:26type of person he was, type of player.
- 3:28He was it. Reminds me of when Michael
- 3:31Jordan came back to a huddle with Luke Longley.
- 3:34Longley was playing great on the boat at that time, that game,
- 3:39and Jordan was amazed. He told him, and you are really
- 3:42good. I mean, you're outstanding the
- 3:45way you play. And then Longley reverted back
- 3:48to being very average. And then when he got back to the
- 3:52huddle the next time, Jordan told him, I'm never going to
- 3:55compliment you again. You know what was I talking
- 3:58about you. Know the the NBA, I'm
- 4:02paraphrasing 1/14/88 dominant game by the Thunder.
- 4:10I mean the T Wolves were mauled and Demaul Game 2 of course
- 4:13scores. Deceiving Sonia scores deceiving
- 4:16because it was a close game for a while, you know, and they
- 4:21broke it open in the in the fourth period.
- 4:24OK, well, I I know, you know, I know that this is what was
- 4:30expected. Even though the score is
- 4:31deceiving. I know that that people have
- 4:34literally predicted that the Thunder was going to run away
- 4:37with this series from the beginning.
- 4:38Like no matter who it was they played, people have OK C as the
- 4:42the Super competitive team to actually win it all.
- 4:46Jack. Yeah, I mean, I picked Minnesota
- 4:49to upset OKC in this series. Let's see what happens in the
- 4:52second game. But I'm going to tell you this,
- 4:55if the Wolves go out in this series and let's say five games
- 4:59something, I'm just throwing it X amount of games.
- 5:03I don't want to hear all this Anthony Edwards talk about being
- 5:06a big star. You know, we got to elevate you.
- 5:10He. Doesn't want it.
- 5:11He doesn't want. What he could yesterday.
- 5:15Julius Ramble was fine yesterday All in all, but with Anthony
- 5:19Edwards I hold him to a different standard.
- 5:23If Anthony Edwards is just an average guy out there, I could
- 5:28say he played a good game yesterday.
- 5:30But Anthony Edwards is expected to play like a superstar.
- 5:35If you want to be 1, you have to be 1.
- 5:38I remember what Terry Bradshaw was John Elway's biggest critic.
- 5:43He didn't like John Elway when the way Elway came out of
- 5:46college said well I I only want to play in California because
- 5:51it's warmer than he thought. He was a spoiled rotten surfer
- 5:54kid. John Elway lost his first 3
- 5:58Super Bowls. Terry Bradshaw didn't mean to
- 6:01poke fun of them. He said great players have to
- 6:05play great in big games. That's and it didn't mean it is
- 6:09a dig on Elway, but it's the truth.
- 6:12If you were a great player, you have to play great and big
- 6:16games. Now I can condone it more in
- 6:19baseball. In the case of an Aaron Judge,
- 6:22you play 162 games, you're playing so much you kind of run
- 6:26out of steam at the end. But in the NBA, you can't
- 6:30because one player can take over a game.
- 6:34You know, in baseball, a position player, it's hard to
- 6:39take over a game. But in the NBA, Anthony Edwards
- 6:43has got to take over, you know, a couple of these games if he's
- 6:47a superstar. And Rudy Gobert, that, that's
- 6:50the was the biggest trade in NBA history to me as far as a
- 6:55quantity goes. Because what Utah got in
- 6:59exchange for trading Rudy Gobert, what Minnesota had to
- 7:02give up. And Rudy Gobert can't just be a
- 7:07good player. Yesterday he wasn't even close
- 7:09to average, let alone good. I, I forgot he was out there.
- 7:14Gobert looked like a phantom. And I'm going to be honest, you
- 7:17know, we talked a little bit before the show started how Shaq
- 7:20had, you know, had been one of his biggest critics.
- 7:23And as soon as Shaq was like, OK, you know, he kind of came
- 7:27back a little bit, you know, Gobert, of course, a French
- 7:30professional. I mean, maybe it's the cultural
- 7:33thing. He was widely regarded though
- 7:35Jack before before yesterday's lack of of playing as one of the
- 7:40best defensive players of all time.
- 7:43Four time NBA defensive player of the year and seven time all
- 7:48defensive first team member leading the league in blocks and
- 7:51rebounds in previous season. They call him the Stifle Tower,
- 7:55but I don't know. I mean, it could compile staff
- 8:00sometimes. Keep this in mind when Gobert
- 8:03was with the Utah yet Donovan Mitchell on the team.
- 8:07They didn't win there. Now they have Anthony Edwards,
- 8:10Julius Randle go bad. That should be a great big three
- 8:14and they have depth as well as that.
- 8:17But I I don't put the blame on one guy.
- 8:20Let's see where the Minnesota shows up the Game 2.
- 8:23They, if they win Game 2 and OK C, the series is turned, you
- 8:28know, once again. But if they fall down to
- 8:31nothing, is Minnesota out of it? No, they're not out of it.
- 8:35But you could do the math to win four out of five against OKC.
- 8:40That's going to be real, real difficult.
- 8:43Well, let me ask you this, Jack. So he's had his own little
- 8:48battles here and there. You know, of course, he punched
- 8:50his teammate last season, Kyle Anderson.
- 8:53Do you think maybe? I mean, this was during a game.
- 8:56Do you think that maybe after that happened that maybe the
- 9:00critics really rolled in and we're a little bit more
- 9:02analytical of his actual playing?
- 9:04You're talking about Anthony Edwards.
- 9:06Anders Yeah, no, I'm talking about Gobert.
- 9:10Gobert, no, Gobert said. Yeah, I'm a little confused.
- 9:12Gobert's always been a timid guy, though on the court.
- 9:15He's not been the one that has instigated these fights that,
- 9:20listen, you were sent that it's going to be some shoving.
- 9:23You might get into it a little bit, but Gobert by nature isn't
- 9:28the most aggressive guy. I mean, Draymond Green came over
- 9:31and grabbed him from behind. Good morning.
- 9:33Richard grabbed him from behind. Yeah, but Gobert's not the type
- 9:38of guy who's an intimidator, per SE.
- 9:42Yeah, he got some nerve, Draymond Green, to try to grab
- 9:45anybody, but OK, let me. Ask you Sonia.
- 9:48Sonia. Who's your least favorite
- 9:50athlete? Draymond Aaron.
- 9:51Oh, Aaron Brown athlete. Yeah, athletes.
- 9:57It's so close between Draymond and Aaron right now.
- 10:02It's so close. If, if, if, if, if Aaron didn't
- 10:07treat The Jets the way he did, I would be indifferent.
- 10:11I really didn't pay that much attention to Aaron Rodgers
- 10:14personality until he came to The Jets.
- 10:17I was more so like, OK, he's a great player.
- 10:19The way he just from the onset of coming on with The Jets,
- 10:23just, you know, lackadaisical, you know, I'm here, you guys are
- 10:27there. I'm Gladys Knight, you're the
- 10:28pips type mentality. It just made me look at him
- 10:31different. And now that the that he's been
- 10:33released and the the way he is, I don't even want to say court
- 10:37at the Pittsburgh Steelers because I don't even know what's
- 10:40going on. It's insane.
- 10:42It's just he's a drama queen. He likes attention and it to me,
- 10:46I'm like, dude, you're either going to play or you're not.
- 10:50So it seems like Aaron is your least favorite and it takes
- 10:54framing a little ahead of them. OK, that's all I wanted to know.
- 10:57I'm not talking about Aaron Rodgers segment.
- 11:00Yes, of course. You know, we got the Eastern
- 11:02Conference game that's going to be tonight, Jack, at 8:00 PM out
- 11:05of Pacers game one against the Knicks.
- 11:09Well, should I say the Knicks are hosting the Pacers?
- 11:12Let me say something that angered me in indirectly.
- 11:18It has nothing to do with the game per SE, but it does in the
- 11:21sense after the Knicks beat the Celtics, they noticed a Tyrese
- 11:27Halliburton fan, an Indiana Pacer fan with a jersey on, just
- 11:31walking in the street, minding his own business.
- 11:35They were following him. They were pelting him with
- 11:37garbage. I mean, it's outrageous to me,
- 11:41as in New York, I'm absolutely outraged over the behavior of
- 11:45the Knick fans because it reflects on the city, reflects
- 11:49very poorly on the city. And I'm going to be honest about
- 11:52it. If Knick fans are that low and
- 11:56if they and if the majority of Knick fans were amused by that
- 12:00behavior, then I'm rooting for the Indiana Pacers to beat my
- 12:04team in my own home city. If that's the type of conduct
- 12:08we're going to display over a fan just walking with a jersey,
- 12:13minding his own business because he they're absolutely entitled
- 12:18the visiting team for fan to walk with their jersey.
- 12:21They're not making any statement.
- 12:23They're not poking fun at Nick fans.
- 12:26They're not rolling them in any way.
- 12:27They're just walking in the Dawn St. and the nervous someone else
- 12:32to throw something at them. It's absolutely sickening to
- 12:36hear that. And Halliburton invited that fan
- 12:40to come to game. I think for the Nick Pacer game,
- 12:43he invited him and the guest that fam.
- 12:47So with that said, I'm waiting for the Knicks because I think
- 12:50it in all probability was a small pack of idiots to why, you
- 12:55know, I wish there was a way to find out who they were, you
- 12:59know, have them pay some fine or something.
- 13:01Maybe have them pay the season tickets for this Indiana Pace,
- 13:06Savannah, pay for him to have a trip to New York next time or
- 13:10whatever. But but with that said, a lot of
- 13:15times he'd like to talk about who does it mean more to to win
- 13:20a series? Does it mean more for the Pacers
- 13:23and more for the next, You know, and just backtracking to the
- 13:29last series, I think it means a little more to the Timberwolves
- 13:32than OK, C to win it. But that's arguable, you know?
- 13:36But the Knicks and Pacers, I think it absolutely means more
- 13:39to the Nets. They lost to the Pacers last
- 13:42year in the playoffs. They went up to nothing to the
- 13:45Pacers and lost in seven games. And if the Knicks can't get to
- 13:51the Finals now, when are they ever going to get to the Finals?
- 13:55I mean, this is if the path has been cleared.
- 13:59The Celtics are out of the way. Kudos to the Knicks for clearing
- 14:03their own path. The Bucks weren't that good this
- 14:06year. The Sixers weren't relevant at
- 14:09all. And the Pacers are beatable
- 14:12team. They're very beatable team, but
- 14:15they're playing so good. Let me take that back when I say
- 14:19very beatable. They're not very beatable
- 14:21because they have been playing so good for a while, but they
- 14:25don't have the big name stars. It's just going on that team.
- 14:32It's a series. The Knicks definitely can win.
- 14:34Do I think they're going to win it?
- 14:36If I put my emotions aside, I'm going to call it for the Pacers
- 14:40and seven games only because of how well they've been playing.
- 14:44They use their bench a little better than the Knicks, but
- 14:47maybe that's going to change because Mitchell Robinson, you
- 14:51know, it's in the equation. You know a lot more coming back
- 14:54from the injury and he played real well in the Celtics series.
- 14:57McBride, you know, it definitely could be a big fact off the
- 15:02bench. So we'll see.
- 15:03But I look for seven game series.
- 15:05I don't expect anything. Less well, let me ask you this,
- 15:09Jack, because you kind of pointed out some of the stars
- 15:11that are on these teams. I I've noticed, not necessarily
- 15:16in the, the series where we are now, but just overall, do you
- 15:20think, and this is a, this is a really good question, maybe a
- 15:23debate question actually. But I, I do want to ask your
- 15:25opinion. Do you think sometimes that
- 15:28teams can just be so talented with the big name stars that
- 15:32they just kind of get in their own way to the fact that they
- 15:36don't perform at the peak that we think or that they really
- 15:39should be to try to get a championship?
- 15:42No, no, I don't. I understand your theory, but
- 15:45not in this case. I mean, the Knicks, big stars,
- 15:48Jalen Brunson, Bronson has a weakness.
- 15:52Sometimes it is they tries to do a little too much at times.
- 15:56I've seen him have the ball and just try to overpower the
- 16:01defense. You know, driving to the
- 16:04baskets, they cut him off. He doesn't have a good shot.
- 16:07He still goes up with it anyway. So sometimes Bronson is isolated
- 16:13a little too much. But look, when you look at the
- 16:16way he's performed for the Knicks, can you really be
- 16:19critical of it? Because, you know, a lot of the
- 16:21times he's performed magnificently and he's their
- 16:25main guy. You know, I was listening
- 16:28yesterday and they were, you know, I think was first take
- 16:32they were talking about and Spike Lee was on it can brunts
- 16:37and establish himself as the greatest neck of all time.
- 16:40And let's not get carried away and make him the greatest nick
- 16:45of all time as a one-on-one player.
- 16:49You know, Brunson's not better than Carmelo Anthony yet.
- 16:54You know, Carmelo Anthony wasn't a type of player who won in the
- 16:57NBA. You know, his game.
- 17:00He, I don't mean to say was a selfish player.
- 17:02He wasn't. But he didn't really play, you
- 17:05know, tenacious defense, OK? At times he wouldn't play
- 17:09defense at all, it seemed, but he was a great individual
- 17:13talent. And how do you compare Patrick
- 17:16Ewing to a Brunt? And I mean, come on.
- 17:19I mean, it's a different position, different player Wall.
- 17:24Like it's it's I think there's great players for great for
- 17:28different eras. Jack, I don't unless you have
- 17:31really like risen the bar, you know, you've you've raised the
- 17:36bar so high that it's almost unattainable.
- 17:40I just believe, not necessarily certainly in greatest of all
- 17:43time, I believe in players for every era and that's for every
- 17:47sport. You know, people can people can
- 17:50debate that, but if you break it down to numbers, then there are
- 17:55times that there is that one standout player that this
- 17:57they're so high that nobody's probably ever going to touch
- 18:00them. But then when you look at like
- 18:02comparisons of like maybe one or two or three players that they
- 18:06actually have stats that are so similar and you can't
- 18:09differentiate them, then the only thing you could do is like,
- 18:12OK, that was during that period like 30 years ago.
- 18:15We had, you know, this player now is that and you could
- 18:17compare them because that person has already set that standard.
- 18:21Yeah, No, I, I agree with you and you, you nailed it perfectly
- 18:25with different areas, don't you? I agree with you completely on
- 18:29that. But the point I maybe got a
- 18:31little off track where I was talking, but the point is this.
- 18:35If you had a Kobe Bryant, you feel you have a real superstar
- 18:39who could take control of the game and Brunson is taking
- 18:42control of games. But are you really going to say,
- 18:46oh, he's as good as Kobe Bryant, for example?
- 18:49Like, like, let's go. Like, woah, maybe when his
- 18:52career is over, we'll be saying that.
- 18:55I mean, I don't know. But I think we get a little
- 18:57carried away, you know, with that type of narrative.
- 19:01But the Nixon paces, it's just it's a great, great Game 2 great
- 19:05coaches. Rick Carlisle is phenomenal,
- 19:08arguably the best coach in the NBA.
- 19:10Rick Carlisle and Tom Thibodeau is a heck of a coach.
- 19:15He's come. On better start resting his
- 19:17vets, he better start knowing how to alternate that bench
- 19:21because those guys have to be tired jacked.
- 19:24If he does not learn how to alternate some of the bench in
- 19:27for at least a little bit of breather here and there.
- 19:30He doesn't even want to take his guys out when they're facing
- 19:33being fouled out. Like he just lets it ride.
- 19:35And I mean, those guys are playing like over 45 minutes of
- 19:40those games. That's a lot.
- 19:42Yeah, Mikel Bridges doesn't seem to mind.
- 19:45He's has like a high Moda, but you know, come crunch time, a
- 19:49couple of them are going to have to handle the ball.
- 19:52Notably, you know, Jalen Brunson did the balls going to be going
- 19:56to him at crunch time when you talk about the last few minutes
- 20:00of the game. But I think I mean I'm sure
- 20:03there's going to be you know, I'm I think at least that's
- 20:06going to be one or two blowouts maybe in this series.
- 20:09But for the most part, the games are going to be nip and tuck and
- 20:13they're going to come down to the wire.
- 20:16No, So, you know, we'll see. It's an intriguing series.
- 20:19It really is. You know the and what was more
- 20:22impressive to you? Let me ask you, Sonia, the
- 20:26Knicks beating this the way the Knicks beat the Celtics for the
- 20:30way the Pacers beat the Cavaliers, That that's a good
- 20:34question. That's a debatable question.
- 20:36What's? More of a debatable.
- 20:38Question we can't take up this Saturday because they would have
- 20:42started their next series. Yeah, I I feel like for now,
- 20:46though, the way the Knicks folded up the Celtics in that
- 20:49last game just surmounted everything.
- 20:53To hold every veteran star on that team, Jack to a single
- 20:57digit performance was shocking to me.
- 21:00I don't think I've ever heard of your whole, your starting five.
- 21:05Nobody even had 10 points. Nobody had 10 rebounds.
- 21:08There was, it was almost like, you know how they call it a
- 21:11triple double. This was like a triple single.
- 21:16Yeah. Oh well, the answer to me.
- 21:18I'm just I'm not sure what the answer is.
- 21:21I'm really not. If I had, if I'm pushed to give
- 21:25an answer, I'd say I was a tiny bit more impressed by what the
- 21:29Pacers did. You know, just watching them,
- 21:32the Knicks were able to capitalize on really poor Celtic
- 21:36shooting and Jay and Jason Tatum wasn't after game six.
- 21:41But the way the Knicks dominated, it probably wouldn't
- 21:44have made a difference, even though we'll never know.
- 21:48And but the Pacers also came back from deficits to beat the
- 21:52Cavaliers. And the way they did it, and I
- 21:55like the ball movement with the pace is just a little better.
- 21:59You know, if I had to draw a comparison.
- 22:01But intriguing. Yeah, and and let's not forget
- 22:06to Chris Porzingis was playing at a poor lay level because of
- 22:11him having this viral issue, the whole theory.
- 22:14So two big folks that clearly were difference makers.
- 22:17I mean, it's the same thing with the Warriors.
- 22:19Steph going down proved to be the cornerstone of that team and
- 22:23they just got annihilated quickly.
- 22:25You brought up Carmelo Anthony for a quick second.
- 22:28We were talking about comparisons.
- 22:30And so I want to congratulate. He and Michael Jordan are set to
- 22:33embark on their careers in sports broadcasting, Jack,
- 22:36specifically with the NBC's coverage of the NBA.
- 22:38They'll be starting up to 2526 season.
- 22:41Jordan, of course, will be bringing a special contribution.
- 22:44He's just going to be labeled as a special contributor to the NBA
- 22:48and WNBA coverage on NBC and Peacock, maybe just to get the
- 22:51WNBA some spark that they've, you know, talked about the laws
- 22:55that they have. And Carmelo Anthony will be
- 22:57coming as a studio analyst. And he's going to, he already
- 23:01has a podcast called 7:00 PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony.
- 23:05So he stayed true to the New York Times.
- 23:08And it's going to be interesting to see both of them in the booth
- 23:10and commenting, so to speak, especially Jordan.
- 23:13I'm going to tell you with Carmelo Anthony, I don't get me
- 23:17wrong, Dave, he won the national championship at Syracuse.
- 23:20He was a really devoted member to USA Basketball, won 3 gold
- 23:25medals. He never won an NBA title.
- 23:29I don't like hearing Carmelo Anthony say, well, had the
- 23:31Pistons drafted me, they would have won a couple of extra NBA.
- 23:35Championship he can get off, get off, get off you know he can set
- 23:40it on his podcast I. I don't.
- 23:44I don't, I don't go for it. I don't buy it.
- 23:48Yeah. I don't know what the answer is.
- 23:49Maybe he's right. Maybe he's wrong.
- 23:52I don't be. If I thought he was right, I'd
- 23:54say I agree with them. But, you know, who knows?
- 23:57But it sounds like whining. He forced his way out of Denver.
- 24:01He forced his way out of Denver. George Carl would argue with him
- 24:07all the time. He got to play defense.
- 24:09But it was, you know, beneath him to be a tenacious defender
- 24:13per SE, you know? OK, but terrific player.
- 24:18Don't get me wrong, he might be a great humanitarian, a nice
- 24:22guy. He didn't get in trouble off the
- 24:25court. So.
- 24:28But I'm tired of these guys like speculating.
- 24:31Well, if they took me, we would have won this, we would have won
- 24:33that. If you have a track record of
- 24:36winning somewhere else, then you can make that comment.
- 24:41You know, I, I, I just don't want it.
- 24:42I just don't want to hear it. And when you're, but the point I
- 24:46was trying to make, when you look at Carmelo Anthony, he's
- 24:49going into the Hall of Fame. Did he go in as a Nick or should
- 24:52he go in as a Denver Nugget? Oh.
- 24:54No stay with New York going in as a Nick going in as.
- 24:59A Nick, What do you look at him more?
- 25:01I look at him more as being a Denver Nugget.
- 25:03Sonia, you're good at looking things up quickly.
- 25:06Tell me how many years he played for Denver and how many played
- 25:09for New York. It's pretty comprehensive.
- 25:12I think, yeah, I think let's see, let me see what they got
- 25:16here for him. And while I'm looking that up,
- 25:20the NBA is also going to be bringing in some other analysts
- 25:23that are coming in now. Let's see.
- 25:26Carmelo was drafted in 2003, third by the 19 seasons in the
- 25:33NBA from 2003 to 2011, which is 8 years with the Nuggets, that's
- 25:409. Actually I know 8.
- 25:42Years. And then he played, yes, very
- 25:44close, New York Knicks, 2011 to 2017.
- 25:47He also played with the Thunder, Rockets, Trail Blazers and the
- 25:52Lakers. I forgot about that.
- 25:53OK, right, right, right. The other teams, they played
- 25:56nine years with the Nuggets. 8 and 7-8 years, OK.
- 25:59OK, thanks Steve O 8:00 and 7:00.
- 26:02But sometimes it's deceiving, like if if you say a player
- 26:05played 2009 through 2010, we think of it as one year, but
- 26:10it's really two years, the two O 9 and the 210 season.
- 26:14But the point is he played one extra year with the Nuggets, so
- 26:19why are every assuming oh, he's a Knick player?
- 26:23He didn't they they never went to the Finals with the Knicks
- 26:27with him there. Neither did the Nuggets go to
- 26:30the. Finals game he holds.
- 26:32He holds records for the Knicks. He has the all time single game
- 26:37scoring record for the Knicks. And they 2 points.
- 26:42He's highly decorated. He's a he's a first ballot
- 26:45inductee of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of
- 26:48Fame. Like he got a lot of his stuff.
- 26:52About that, that's fine. Wait, wait, wait.
- 26:54Would he think he's got the first ballot thing because he
- 26:57and that's because he's with the Knicks alone as far as being the
- 27:00all time scorer one game. OK, let's just call Wilt
- 27:04Chamberlain the greatest play of all time because he holds the
- 27:07record 100 points for one game and no one has gotten in the 90s
- 27:12before. So Wilt's number one, he holds
- 27:14the record. Come on, son.
- 27:16Don't tell me one game. Good for him.
- 27:21I mean, listen, he was a great player.
- 27:23Let me ask you, did you get a chance today?
- 27:28Don't they get a chance to choose?
- 27:29Like if it comes down to what? He had a hard time getting a job
- 27:33at the end of his career. He had to reinvent himself and
- 27:37be a second will. Look when Jeremy Lin came up
- 27:40when Carmelo Anthony was hurt on the next and became an overnight
- 27:44sensation. I mean, Carmelo Anthony
- 27:47obviously a far better player than Jeremy Lin was, but Jeremy
- 27:52Lin was creating a feel good story.
- 27:55And when Jeremy Lin eventually moved on to Houston, Carmelo
- 27:58Anthony tweeted something that was like indirectly like a put
- 28:03down. You know, I, I didn't go for
- 28:06that. You know, honestly speaking, it
- 28:08was indirect, but it showed there was kind of like a
- 28:12jealousy, like, oh, I'm the man, I'm the Dis, I'm the Dak.
- 28:16Look, Carmelo Anthony, great player.
- 28:19He wasn't any more of a nick than he wasn't a nugget.
- 28:22That's the point I'm trying to make.
- 28:25I mean everyone let. Them choose at some point, like
- 28:29they're going to ask him, right? Is is that what happens?
- 28:31Well, Mello was not as great a Nick player as Walt Clyde
- 28:36Frazier. If you want to argue he was a
- 28:39better player than Walt Frazier, that's a fair argument to make.
- 28:44But as a Nick, there's certain players were with franchises and
- 28:50we linked them to a franchise is the all time best player on that
- 28:56franchise. And Carmelo doesn't rate because
- 29:01he wasn't a career Nick. He was there what, 8 years,
- 29:05which is a substantial amount of time, don't get me wrong, but he
- 29:09wasn't a on the top of the list with the Ewings, the Walt
- 29:13Frazier's, the Willis Reed's as being a great Nick.
- 29:17So I'm going to. Ask you again, Jack, I've asked
- 29:20you 3 times. When it's a when it's basically
- 29:24a split like that. Do they allow the player to
- 29:27choose where they want to retire?
- 29:30I mean where they want to go down.
- 29:31I believe so, yeah. Yeah.
- 29:34And players do what they want. It's sometimes very difficult.
- 29:39Look, a player like Reggie Jackson and his whole career he
- 29:44played for he played for the Angels, the Orioles, the
- 29:48Athletics, and the Yankees. The bulk of it with with the
- 29:52Athletics and Yankees. He was with the Athletics a
- 29:54total of nine years in his career and he was with the
- 29:57Yankees a total of five years. He won three World Series as a
- 30:03member of the Oakland Athletics, 2 World Series as a member of
- 30:07the Yankees. Yet he elected to go in as a
- 30:10Yankee, and Major League Baseball was OK with it because
- 30:13Reggie Jackson created such a buzz during his time in New
- 30:18York, like the three home runs in the last World Series game in
- 30:221977 when they won it. That I can understand that.
- 30:27OK, I can understand that. But then Major League Baseball,
- 30:31change your rules because Wade Boggs went in as a Tampa Bay Ray
- 30:36and what did he do? Play one year with the Rays?
- 30:39I guess they offered him some money or some deal, and that was
- 30:43inappropriate. He should have gone in as a Red
- 30:45Sox. Yeah, I, I don't know, Jack.
- 30:48I mean, you know, like I always say, the verdict is still out.
- 30:51I'm sure he'll choose to go in, you know, as a Knick because
- 30:55he's so New York. His whole podcast is all
- 30:57Brooklyn. He just loves New York and.
- 30:59So I don't blame him. I don't blame him so.
- 31:02He's not going to, he's not going to pay homage to the team
- 31:04that drafted him, but OK. Look, Carmelo Anthony showed he
- 31:10could. You could call him a winner.
- 31:12He won a national championship with Syracuse that he proved
- 31:16himself. You know, he was there one year
- 31:19when the NCAA tournament that proved that he absolutely is one
- 31:24of his three gold medals. He was with a stack team in the
- 31:27Olympics, the other NBA stars. But look what he did at
- 31:31Syracuse. How many players win NCAA
- 31:33championships? Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 31:38And what about Shohei? He's an Angel, but yeah, but
- 31:43he's, he's an Angel to me. But Juan is a Dodger already,
- 31:48so. No, he'll be when Otani retires
- 31:52he's going to go in as a dodge and no ifs and buts about it.
- 31:56The Angels didn't win anything with Otani.
- 31:59They the team. There was no buzz around the
- 32:02team side of Otani being on it when he was there, and Mike
- 32:06proud of course too, though Tony's going to go in as a
- 32:10dodge, assuming you know, he finishes out his career there
- 32:14for the most part. Yeah.
- 32:17All right, so moving along here, let's let's plug in real quick
- 32:21some NHL news and we're going to go over the NFL, then we're
- 32:24going to talk about a little boxing here.
- 32:26The Florida Panthers versus the Carolina Hurricanes.
- 32:29Panthers are one. And the last time these two
- 32:31teams faced off, Jack, was 2023, and the Panthers swept the
- 32:35Hurricanes. It's so weird for me to say
- 32:38Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, because everybody
- 32:40knows the Carolina Panthers are the NFL team that I.
- 32:43Yeah, that's where we're on it, isn't it?
- 32:45The Carolina Hurricanes? The people in Carolina say we're
- 32:50playing the Panthers. It's kind of like the.
- 32:52Little It's so weird. Of course, the Panthers.
- 32:55Let me ask you this. I never asked you this before
- 32:58with the Carolina Hurricanes. Are they nearly as populist?
- 33:04The Carolina Panthers at the NFL.
- 33:06No, but they so this is the thing there's a totally separate
- 33:12fan base for that. They've tried in the metro area
- 33:15so many times to pump up. I I think when they first came
- 33:19out there was a lot of hype around them.
- 33:21Then, you know, it just kind of fizzled out, especially with
- 33:28with Atlanta at the time, they had a team, I believe.
- 33:31I think that's who they had. I can't remember the Thrashers.
- 33:33And then once that kind of filled out, something just
- 33:36happened. There was a disconnect then.
- 33:39I think the pandemic really kind of broke up the the heightness
- 33:43around the Hurricanes, to be honest with you, Jack, they're
- 33:46on an upward trend now. More people are tuning in,
- 33:48especially now that they've run, you know, another championship
- 33:51series back here for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
- 33:54This is their third time, I believe, in as many three years
- 33:57trying to get to the playoffs. I know for a fact if they win
- 34:01the Stanley Cup, that will really create the hype that
- 34:04they're needing. They've been so close so many
- 34:06times. And of course, in the game 152,
- 34:11Carter and Aaron, early goals for the Panthers, Sergey Strong
- 34:17in the net, all that stuff. the Hurricanes had been 5 and 0 at
- 34:21home in the playoffs. Jack, that's big and that's
- 34:24enough to get the fans really engaged.
- 34:27Of course, next game is Thursday at 8:00 in Raleigh.
- 34:31So I'm looking, I mean, when you see them on TV, it's a, it's a
- 34:35crowded event, you know, so the attendance is there.
- 34:39But like I said, I think it's kind of like once they start
- 34:42getting towards championship, that is that the fans and would
- 34:45be fans start really kind of tuning in.
- 34:48I've made a mental note to try to be more aware of what they
- 34:51got going on year round so I can kind of be more versed in that.
- 34:55And so I'm pretty sure a lot of other players.
- 34:57But then you have your tried and true, you know, hockey fans that
- 35:00are true fans and have been since day one.
- 35:03Of course in the Western Conference Final, the Dallas
- 35:06Stars are making a run for it again.
- 35:08We saw them last year as well too.
- 35:10This time they're going against Edmonton Oilers.
- 35:13The series you know, we have not started yet starting tonight,
- 35:16game one, 8:00 in Dallas. This is going to be a rematch of
- 35:20the 2024 Western finals that they had.
- 35:22The Oilers won in six games. And you know, I, I like to look
- 35:25at the comparison. They literally run the same type
- 35:27of series as the NBA, the same type of year and everything.
- 35:32The stars have strong goal tending abilities with Jake
- 35:34Orger and they have a deep roster.
- 35:37So hopefully this will be their year that they can get back.
- 35:39Of course they got Connor McDavid and Leon Drasco for the
- 35:43Oilers, who are their best players going to be on tonight
- 35:47as well. A lot of lot of hockey news and
- 35:49stuff. Let's switch over to NFL.
- 35:51We got just a few minutes. We want to talk about some
- 35:53boxing news as well. They, I almost said the
- 35:56shingles, the Eagles, everybody calls on the shingles have given
- 36:01Nick Sirianni a multi year extension.
- 36:04They have not really released all the financials, but they've
- 36:06come up. You know, of course he deserves
- 36:08his previous contract five years from the 2021 season when he was
- 36:12hired. He's basically heading to a
- 36:14Super Bowl. It's a a non factor, a no
- 36:17brainer as I like to say that he would be getting this type of
- 36:20contract. So congratulations to him and of
- 36:23course other NFL news. Fred Warner with the 49ers gets
- 36:28a big contract as well on yesterday or day before
- 36:31yesterday. I know we were on air on Monday.
- 36:35So it has happened since then. Five years, five year deal for
- 36:39for Fred. Of course, The Jets, your team,
- 36:43Jack has released Greg Zurling. It's a move signaling their
- 36:47continued youth movement. They're trying to make their
- 36:50routine more useful. You guys can see that going,
- 36:53Jack. I don't know what's going on.
- 36:55Good morning, Miss Linda. Hey, hi.
- 37:00Hi, Linda. How you doing?
- 37:02Jack, what happened? You guys are releasing y'all
- 37:04trying to bring like just a? Lot.
- 37:05What's the reason we lost a couple of games last year?
- 37:10Missed Big Hicks. If Greg Sirloin had made a
- 37:14couple of kicks, it would have changed the narrative during the
- 37:17season before. He put y'all in a position where
- 37:21you had to make those kicks. Your quarterback was the
- 37:23problem. I mean, no, no, it wasn't Aaron
- 37:26Rodgers. I could tell you God would get
- 37:28the team in field goal position at the end of the game.
- 37:31Sirloin would line up for the, you know, winning kick and would
- 37:35go wide. That just bad.
- 37:37Yes, Sirloin was bad last year, and you could look, look at the
- 37:42two ways. You could say it was an off
- 37:45year, bring them back, what can he do going forward?
- 37:49But sometimes you got to change the culture in the room and the
- 37:53fatigue and the team has their line around.
- 37:55They're not going to have confidence that he can get it
- 37:58done again. So they moved on from him last
- 38:01year, actually, but it just became official now, was on the
- 38:05injured list. And yeah, they just had to.
- 38:10He's a. Journeyman, he's a journeyman,
- 38:12so to speak. Do you guys, I remember him
- 38:14playing, he's been playing for a little bit, but you know, I'm
- 38:19going to be like this. This is this is always the
- 38:22theory, you know, and this, this is not just for The Jets.
- 38:25This is across the board because people have told me when I'm
- 38:27like, oh man, my kicker cost us the game.
- 38:30No, they did not. If your plays are played
- 38:34throughout all four quarters, you don't put your game on the
- 38:37line with your kicker. Like you just can't do that
- 38:40because that's literally riding it.
- 38:43It's it's like a 5050 every single time.
- 38:46And so for me, I'm going to say that's that's a whole jet issue.
- 38:50And it starts with the little toxic quarterback you guys have.
- 38:59And you know now that now that you guys taking out the trash
- 39:02with Aaron Rodgers, you may have a chance of winning a couple of
- 39:05games next season. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:07The Jets, in the next three seasons, we're going to go to
- 39:11the playoffs one time on the next three seasons when may at
- 39:16most win one playoff game. But I'm not optimistic about
- 39:20that. They're going to feel like
- 39:22Justin Fields is OK and at the end of three years, we're going
- 39:25to see you. You know, we're not a threat to
- 39:27win the Super Bowl and then we're going to have to have
- 39:30another quarterback. I don't want to hear this 8 and
- 39:3299 and 8th season and the Aaron Glenn and hear how wonderful
- 39:36Aaron Glenn is. Please I I don't want to hear
- 39:40about this. Y'all might turn it around but
- 39:42you know I will tell you this. Go ahead and get your clinics
- 39:45ready for the Panthers game because you won't be beating us,
- 39:48but you might beat some other people in the South, but just
- 39:50not the Panthers. Well, I'll take it week by week,
- 39:53you know, if it comes along, but you know I'll.
- 39:55Be rooting. Just say thanks.
- 39:58They're Jessica getting younger, getting back with Nick Sirianni.
- 40:01He had one year left on his contract.
- 40:04Now this is what bothers me about coaches in general, how
- 40:08they're perceived by the media and the fans who basically, I
- 40:14don't want to say a clueless, but I'll say mindless.
- 40:18OK, Normally if a coach has one year left on his contract, there
- 40:22are two ways you could go with it if the team doesn't extend
- 40:26the coach. The coach is a free agent at the
- 40:29end of that season. They could play out the year.
- 40:32And imagine if Nick Siriani said to the Eagles, no, I'm not
- 40:37signing the contract until the end of the year.
- 40:39He's he's a free agent. He could go to any NFL team he
- 40:42wants. He could go to the highest
- 40:45bidder. If you're not good of a coach
- 40:46and teams are going to need a coach, he's going to have a job
- 40:50somewhere. Maybe he's going to be in major
- 40:53demand and if you're the Eagles too, if you really want him to
- 40:57be a guy of the future, you're sure about it, you extend them
- 41:02and that was a question for the Eagles to.
- 41:04Make sure that was that was a. Smart thing to do because Nick
- 41:09Siriani deserved it. He absolutely deserved it.
- 41:12And the Eagles and Siriani both, you know, can come meeting of
- 41:17the minds. I'm not sure what the dollar
- 41:19value was, but I'm sure it was fair.
- 41:22It's he has something like 5 years left with the Eagles.
- 41:26That's the way you do it. I don't want to hear about
- 41:29people complaining about a manager coach being lame duck if
- 41:33they have one year left on their contract.
- 41:36If you sign the, if you, in other words, Sonia, if you sign
- 41:41the contract for four years, after three years, the team's
- 41:47not obligated to extend. You finish out your damn done
- 41:51deal. And then you sit down with the
- 41:53team and if the team is so scared you're going to go
- 41:56elsewhere, then they're going to move forward and they're going
- 41:59to try to extend you early. With players, it's different.
- 42:03OK, with players it's different, but even then it's somewhat
- 42:07different. They're under no obligation to
- 42:11extend you. Like I'm sick of hearing this
- 42:13term lame duck. I mean, no one is a lame duck
- 42:17unless you have maybe an interim coach that got the job that year
- 42:22and you have no idea whether the team is going to want to rehire
- 42:26at the end of the year. Or if your performance has been
- 42:29so bad that you know this is your last year and you know that
- 42:33they're probably looking for another coach to replace you,
- 42:36you're a lame duck then. Oh, yeah, I know in some cases
- 42:40there's a lame duck coach, but if Nick, let's say Diego's
- 42:44weren't going to sign Nick Sirianni this year and let him
- 42:46play out the final year of his contract, OK, that would in this
- 42:51case, it would have shown a complete lack of faith in
- 42:55Sirianni despite winning the Super Bowl, and that would have
- 42:59been a terrible luck. The man won the Super Bowl.
- 43:02He went to two Super Bowls in the last three years and, and
- 43:06you're going to let him play out the last year and, and let him
- 43:10walk Perhaps if he wants to. That would look terrible, but it
- 43:15didn't happen. It was a win, win situation for
- 43:19Sirianni and the Eagles. And, and keep this in mind.
- 43:23One year ago, a lot of people thought Nick Sirianni might not
- 43:27even come back. OK, keep that in mind.
- 43:30Kind of like kind of like they're saying Mike Tomlin,
- 43:33Jack, like people have been talking about that for like the
- 43:36last three seasons and they like to say they haven't had a losing
- 43:41season, but you guys are not winning the playoffs either.
- 43:45So I don't, I don't know how they like to phrase that to try
- 43:48to make themselves feel better or whatever.
- 43:49I guess because they break the 500 mark and make it to the wild
- 43:53card, they're not losing. That's crazy to me.
- 43:56Nobody else what has happened. My common situation, similar to
- 44:00Don Shuler, the Miami Shula would have post winning records
- 44:05every year, get to the playoffs, Dolphins would get eliminated
- 44:09right away and there was a fatigue set in.
- 44:12After a while when the team doesn't get to a Super Bowl,
- 44:16fatigue start setting in with the fan base.
- 44:19And that's what's happening happening with Tomlin.
- 44:21Look, the Steelers could go 10 and seven this year and lose in
- 44:25the first game of the playoffs and the fan base, that's going
- 44:29to be unrest. The same old story that feels
- 44:33going on. I'm not optimistic they're going
- 44:35to go 10 and seven. I mean, it looks to me like
- 44:38Tomlin might have his first losing record in a while.
- 44:41They better dress the quarterback situation.
- 44:44Mason Rudolph is a little better than people think, but he's not
- 44:48the answer moving forward. Yeah, I mean, I don't, I don't
- 44:52see that. And Stevo has a good point.
- 44:55You know, they're getting rid of rude on vote on also rude on
- 44:57vote on all these rules about the tush push and all this other
- 45:02stuff that they're going to be looking at, of course.
- 45:03Oh, that they just ruled the NFL players can compete in the
- 45:07Olympics, Jack, That's going to be interesting.
- 45:12Yeah, flag football. But I mean, to make their name
- 45:15in the Olympics is pretty big, so kudos to them.
- 45:18But I had to ask you about that Thomas situation.
- 45:20Look, and congratulations to Siriani.
- 45:23Fred Warner. Of course, we talked about Brock
- 45:25Purdy getting his extension. He's no longer Mr. Irrelevant.
- 45:28But how much money you get guaranteed Sonya?
- 45:30I think Warana had a three extension at 5:00.
- 45:33I could be wrong Werner, but Brock Purdy was guaranteed out
- 45:40of his 235,000,000 so he's guaranteed 181 million.
- 45:46He's the highest paid quarterback, Yeah, He he.
- 45:49He did well for himself. Look, Purdy is the Niner
- 45:53franchise quarterback to me. People got down on them last
- 45:57year. I think he had enough of a body
- 45:59of work to show he's the guy for the Niners moving forward.
- 46:04I mean, I don't, I, I'm, I don't subscribe to paying these
- 46:07quarterbacks a lot of money who have not produced some type of
- 46:11at least a NFC or AFC championship.
- 46:14We see how they pay. Trevor Lawrence got a lot of
- 46:16coins last year. The details of Purdy.
- 46:19I mean, of course Purdy taken the very last in the draft.
- 46:22None of that matters now. You know, the last shall be
- 46:25first to quote some of my favorite Bible scriptures.
- 46:28But he's got a $265 million contract extension.
- 46:34It's going to keep him as a 49er through 2030, Jack, like, Oh my
- 46:40God, 20-30. I'm sitting up here doing the
- 46:43math like wow. Annual average is going to be
- 46:46$53 million. He's going to.
- 46:48It's going to tie him to Jarrett Golf as the seventh highest paid
- 46:52quarterback in NFL by average annual value, $181.00.
- 46:57Excuse me, $181,000,000 in guarantees.
- 47:01That's the key point, what you're guaranteed, that's the
- 47:04important number. But then he got 100 million that
- 47:08was fully guaranteed at signing. He's getting 166.5 O 5 million
- 47:14in the first three years and is structured to be front loaded,
- 47:19meaning that a lot of it's paid upfront.
- 47:22Sonia, he deserves it on today's market because keep in mind when
- 47:28he was performing for the Niners taking him to a Super Bowl, he
- 47:31was making what, like 800,000 a year?
- 47:34Less than one year was making like about four something.
- 47:39Yeah, he deserves it. He deserves it well.
- 47:42Congratulations to him. I mean, it's going to be
- 47:44interesting to see what they do if whether or not McCaffrey
- 47:46comes back healthy or doesn't come back or does because he's
- 47:49been injured. Of course, they don't have
- 47:51Brandon Iuke anymore. A lot of big names.
- 47:54He's going to have to really show and prove with how they've
- 47:56built in the draft and in in the offseason to build.
- 47:59Around Super Bowl window, this Super Bowl window, I feel his
- 48:04closed, but Devo Samuel's not there anymore.
- 48:08I feel it's closed this Super Bowl window.
- 48:11But, you know, maybe they'll rebound.
- 48:13Maybe they'll show resiliency and get to the playoffs.
- 48:16Who knows? I mean, there's still talent on
- 48:18the team. Yeah, let's let's switch over.
- 48:21We got about 9 minutes left, Jack.
- 48:23We kind of got on the NBA and I love it.
- 48:26Always a great conversation, Jack and myself.
- 48:28Good morning to everyone joining us.
- 48:29Thank you so much for sharing, liking and commenting this
- 48:32morning. Let's talk to MLB News Power.
- 48:36Quickly on MLB News because I rather Sonia, let me call an
- 48:40audible on you, OK? You send in the play.
- 48:44You know, you're the producer, kind of you.
- 48:46You send in the play MLB news. I'm the quarterback.
- 48:50You sent that in to me, but I'm order I'm going to do an order
- 48:53both of boxing because it's more important.
- 48:56Oh. My God.
- 48:57I need to talk about it. All right, let's.
- 49:00Talk. About today former middle weight
- 49:03champion of world Nino Ben Venuti passed away at the age of
- 49:0787. And a lot of the fans out there
- 49:10who are not really true boxing fans maybe didn't hear with Nino
- 49:14Benvenuti. But let me tell you about him.
- 49:17He was the world middle weight champion when there was only one
- 49:21champion put division. Not like the nonsense you have
- 49:24today for champions put division in 1960.
- 49:29OK, the 1960 Olympics, Cassius Clay as he was known then later
- 49:36to become Muhammad Ali, he won a gold medal in those Olympics.
- 49:39The American team won a couple other gold medals, but the boxer
- 49:43voted. The outstanding fighter of those
- 49:46Olympics in 1960 was Nino Ben Venuti from Rome, Italy.
- 49:52Nino Ben Venuti then went on to win the 1st 65 fights of his
- 49:57professional career. So when we hear this nonsense
- 50:01about Floyd Mayweather record Marciano 49 and Noah record 50
- 50:06and no other fighters have exceeded that.
- 50:08But then they continued to fight Nate loose Nino Benvenuti.
- 50:14He in 1967 took New York by storm.
- 50:19He came to Madison Square Garden and he upset Emil Griffith to
- 50:23win the middle weight championship of the world.
- 50:26And then they had a rematch later that the F Shea Stadium
- 50:29and the great Emil Griffith regained the title by a
- 50:33decision. And then they had a rubber match
- 50:36on moth March 4th, 1968. It opened up the new Madison
- 50:40Square Garden. You know what Madison Square
- 50:42Garden opened up the the arena now as we know it 1968 they
- 50:48wanted to put on the most special event.
- 50:51They didn't put on a basketball game or hockey game.
- 50:54They had boxing. They had a double header to open
- 50:58the Garden. Something special for the first
- 51:01night at the new Garden. Joe Frazier for Buster Mathis
- 51:05and Nino Ben Venuti in the Co main event for Emil Griffith.
- 51:10And Ben Venuti regain the title, beating Griffith on a close
- 51:14decision in 1968. And then there'd be some great
- 51:18title defenses he have. Notably, he knocked out Luis
- 51:23Rodriguez, former welterweight champion who was top middle
- 51:26weight contender with one punch. And eventually, like all
- 51:30fighters, Ben Vinuti declined and he lost the title to Carlos
- 51:36Monzone, got stopped and then in the rematch he couldn't regain
- 51:40it with Monzone. But he was a a great, great
- 51:43fighter and he was a successful businessman in Italy.
- 51:47He did really, really good for himself.
- 51:50But The funny thing about the Griffith Ben Vinuti 3 trilogy,
- 51:54they were great rivals in the ring.
- 51:58And there may have seemed to be a little bit of bitterness, but
- 52:00when Ben Venuti's son was born, he made Griffith the godfather
- 52:04of his son and and and Griffith was very popular in Italy.
- 52:10That was the ironic part about it.
- 52:12And Griffith told me Ben Venuti would fly him to Italy and
- 52:16they'd sit down with a crowd of people and they'd be watching
- 52:20the Ben Vinuti Griffith fights. And this is in Italy.
- 52:23And Griffith was saying as many people were cheering for me As
- 52:27for him. And I remember Vito Antifermo,
- 52:31who who I know very well, a friend of mine who later became
- 52:36world middle weight champion himself.
- 52:38He was a kid in Italy during the time and he said I had two
- 52:41idols, Griffith and Ben Vinuti and Ben Vinuti.
- 52:44He was kind of like a matinee idol, good looking guy, Lawn
- 52:48had. The only interaction I ever had
- 52:50with him was funny. It was up at the Hall of Fame
- 52:53weekend in town of Stone in New York.
- 52:55I was trying to interview him, you know, and he kept saying
- 53:00like acting no speak English, no speak English, no speak English.
- 53:04And. Finally, you know, I tried.
- 53:07I was persistent, trying to get the interview, Sonia.
- 53:09Finally he got annoyed at me and he told me in very clear
- 53:14English. He doesn't speak English.
- 53:15Don't you understand? I told you I don't speak
- 53:18English. Why do you keeping why not
- 53:22laughing? He didn't do it in a nasty way.
- 53:25He was just busy at that moment. Whatever, he didn't want to talk
- 53:29at that moment, which was fine. He wasn't rude to me in any way.
- 53:33And then he, and if anything, it had me laughing, you know, when
- 53:37he was speaking then. But, and I spoke to him on the
- 53:41phone after, in fact on something, I forgot what it was
- 53:44about. But he was very friendly in the
- 53:46telephone conversation at the later time, at the age 87,
- 53:51passed away. I don't know whether boxing had
- 53:54any effect later on the years in the ring.
- 53:58You know, it tends to catch up to guys with a long career.
- 54:02But look, he lived a long, prosperous life, and he made his
- 54:06mark, you know, as a Great Hall of Fame champion.
- 54:10Yeah, of course, Reverend Italian boxer, 2 weight,
- 54:12undisputed champion and Hall of Fame inductee, and he won a gold
- 54:17medal at the 19. You don't got to look that up.
- 54:20Oh yeah, I know more than that. What's on Wikipedia?
- 54:22You know when it comes. To I'm not on Wikipedia, Jack,
- 54:25don't. Say that I know more than this
- 54:27fucking. That I know what he's going.
- 54:29To find online. That is his whole team because.
- 54:32I'm anything with me. No, I I know more.
- 54:34Than that you are like we are all live and you are literally
- 54:37not even letting me speak. Because you're not talking
- 54:43Sonia. I got to fill in the pause.
- 54:45OK, well I'm going to let you have the rest of the show.
- 54:47How about? That no, no, no, I'm just saying
- 54:51Keith Kim. Keith Sue Kim for Nina.
- 54:56Sonia will come back, she always does.
- 54:59Keith Sue Kim handed Ben Bernotti his first defeat, a
- 55:04Korean. It was a very debatable decision
- 55:09that took place, you know, in that fight.
- 55:11That's what happens in fighters careers.
- 55:14Things aren't always the way they, like appear on the record.
- 55:18But, you know, just a great champion.
- 55:20Nino Benvenuti really was. And when he fought a Neil
- 55:25Griffith at the Garden, one of the things that that was a
- 55:30prelude to what would come later on with other sports.
- 55:34They actually started with Ben Venuti, the garden crowd that go
- 55:37Nino, Nino, Nino, Nino. And it was just, you know,
- 55:44dynamic, electric. He was charismatic, you know, a
- 55:49a great champion in the ring, a charismatic 1 outside it.
- 55:59The end. Very good, Jack, very good
- 56:07presentation of Benvenito. I was just chiming in to say
- 56:12that I had heard of him and I was.
- 56:14I actually knew that he was one of the greatest.
- 56:17I mean, even though I don't know as much as you because you're
- 56:19the boxing writer. I was just basically chiming in.
- 56:22But Brent, good morning to you. Brent, he says debatable
- 56:26question, like the Manny Pacquiao fight in Australia.
- 56:29That was ridiculous, The debatable decision.
- 56:32I thought Brent, Brent. I thought Pacquiao would not
- 56:35fight against Jeff Horn in Australia.
- 56:37I thought he deserved the decision.
- 56:40I just thought it was the wrong decision.
- 56:42I didn't think it was ridiculous.
- 56:44I didn't think it was off the charts.
- 56:46I thought Pacquiao did deserve it though.
- 56:51No don't worry about it guys, after the live I will be choking
- 56:54Jack out. OK.
- 56:55Anyhoo, poor Mac. I guess I didn't, I did not see
- 56:59every episode. Like Jack just freaking diced me
- 57:03up on here. Anyway, definitely 87.
- 57:07Like you said, you don't. You never know if something
- 57:09played a part. I remember my grandmother worked
- 57:11at a nursing home. There was a boxer there when I
- 57:13was a kid. I don't remember his name, but
- 57:15he had some issues from, of course, boxing in a lower
- 57:18league, of course. But if all that stuff kind of
- 57:21plays into their health. But 87 is is a great age to have
- 57:26been alive and to have set so many records and they have so
- 57:29many beloved fans. Of course, tributes are pouring
- 57:32worldwide because he was so revered.
- 57:35Revered, excuse me, in Italy and worldwide.
- 57:39So anyway, that will are you going to wrap up with the Juan
- 57:42Soto news that you want? To talk about, Yeah, very, very
- 57:45quick with Juan Soto. Michael Kay said he heard from
- 57:50sources that Juan Soto's not happy with the Mets, that he
- 57:55looked as happiest over last weekend when he interacted with
- 57:59the Yankees manager Aaron Boone and Aaron Judge.
- 58:03And there was family pressure that got him to sign with the
- 58:07Mets because they like Steve Cone, the own and his wife And
- 58:10the setup the Mets had to soda was kind of 1, was kind of
- 58:14pushed into it a little by his family.
- 58:17And he just seemed, you know, doesn't seem nearly as happy
- 58:21being a Met and nor listen to actions as he was with the
- 58:24Yankees. But, you know, it's something
- 58:26we'll keep an eye on as we go along.
- 58:28And now all the talk Sonia about 1 Soda, maybe not hustling in
- 58:32the manager or the Met Collisman, those who wanted to
- 58:35talk to him about it. Yep.
- 58:39All right, guys. So that was our show for today.
- 58:41Thanks everyone for the likes, loves, comments.
