- 0:00Speaker 1: And now joining me on the line. I'm very conscious
- 0:02Speaker 1: of his time. It is Matt Cunningham, Sky News bureau
- 0:05Speaker 1: chief for the Northern Territory. Good morning to you, Matt. Yeah, okay,
- 0:09Speaker 1: a very well busy day for you, mate. Once again,
- 0:12Speaker 1: they're at the Supreme Court.
- 0:15Speaker 2: That's right. We're up to day seven now in this
- 0:18Speaker 2: murder trial of Comfortable Zachary Rolf, who we know it's
- 0:21Speaker 2: pleaded not guilty to that one charge of murder and
- 0:23Speaker 2: the backup charges of manslaughter and engaging in a violent
- 0:27Speaker 2: act causing death over the shooting death of Cumenjoy Walker
- 0:31Speaker 2: and Namo on the nights of November twenty nineteen. Now, look, yesterday, Katie,
- 0:37Speaker 2: we heard evidence from a couple of Comfortable role friends
- 0:41Speaker 2: and fellow police officers from Our Springs, including Comfortable Mitchell
- 0:45Speaker 2: Hanson and Comfortable Brianna Body. Now, these were officers who
- 0:49Speaker 2: were part of his general Patrol Duties group in our Strings.
- 0:53Speaker 2: They went part of the team that went the immediate
- 0:55Speaker 2: response team that went to you in the move. They
- 0:57Speaker 2: were part of his in our Springs. They're both asked
- 1:04Speaker 2: about this theme that's been running through this trial, this
- 1:07Speaker 2: phrase that's youth in police training, knife equals gone, and
- 1:11Speaker 2: both of those officers confirmed that in their training they
- 1:14Speaker 2: are taught that when a police officer is confronted by
- 1:18Speaker 2: an offender with a knife or a blade or an
- 1:21Speaker 2: edged weapon, their training is to draw their firearm and
- 1:24Speaker 2: to be prepared to use it. Now, the defense said
- 1:28Speaker 2: at the beginning of this trial that that would be
- 1:30Speaker 2: something it would be pressing home. Of course, we know
- 1:34Speaker 2: that in that confrontation where Comen Joe Walker was shot,
- 1:38Speaker 2: he'd stabbed Comestable Rolf in the shoulder with a pair
- 1:41Speaker 2: of surgical scissors, comes to Rolf, then fires three shots. Now,
- 1:45Speaker 2: the prosecution and the defense, as we've discussed Katie, agreed
- 1:49Speaker 2: that that first shot was reasonable and necessary under the circumstances.
- 1:54Speaker 2: What this case hangs on is those second and third shots.
- 1:57Speaker 2: They're the shots that the prosecution say we're not eagerly justified.
- 2:01Speaker 2: There was two point six seconds between shot one and
- 2:03Speaker 2: shot two, and the prosecution says that between that two
- 2:07Speaker 2: point six seconds the situation had significantly changed. They say
- 2:11Speaker 2: that at that point Comfortable Ros's partner, Comfortable Adamy Burle,
- 2:15Speaker 2: had Cumen Joe Walker pinned down on the ground and
- 2:18Speaker 2: they therefore, they say that those shots were not reasonable
- 2:22Speaker 2: or necessary. We're going to hear more event evidence from
- 2:26Speaker 2: police officers today, Katie. In either today or in the
- 2:30Speaker 2: next couple of days, we're going to going to hear
- 2:32Speaker 2: from Comfortable Adamy Burle, who was comfortable Roll's partner, who
- 2:36Speaker 2: went into that house and in the mood with him.
- 2:38Speaker 2: And this week we're also expected to hear some evidence
- 2:41Speaker 2: from some members of the community.
- 2:42Speaker 1: From you in the Moon Well, Matt Cunningham, no doubt,
- 2:45Speaker 1: it's going to be an incredibly busy week. We'll try
- 2:48Speaker 1: and catch up with you again throughout the week. Thank
- 2:50Speaker 1: you so much for the cross this morning. No thank
- 2:53Speaker 1: you
