Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Countdown to Monday Night Football with Greg Bell.
- 0:04Speaker 2: He's going to go into the open field.
- 0:06Speaker 1: As we count you down to tonight's game at 515.
- 0:09Speaker 1: He'll coast in for the touchdown. Brought to you by
- 0:13Speaker 1: Frost Brew Coors Light. Cold as the Rockies. On Sports Radio.
- 0:19Speaker 3: 93.3, KJR FM. Hi, good morning. Greg Bell in Brooklyn,
- 0:28Speaker 3: New York. Someday I'll tell you the stories of why
- 0:30Speaker 3: I'm in Brooklyn, New York today. Jessamyn McIntyre back at
- 0:32Speaker 3: her Elliott Bay studios in downtown Seattle. Good morning, ma'am.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Good morning. Busy weekends for both of us.
- 0:39Speaker 3: And we weren't even around for the biggest story of
- 0:41Speaker 3: the Seattle sports weekend.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. We were both in transit.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I was in Washington, D.C. in the rain for the Seahawks'
- 0:49Speaker 3: first loss since last November. Jessamyn was in Pullman to
- 0:53Speaker 3: watch the Cougars lose to Arizona in a game that
- 0:57Speaker 3: was kind of close until the end. And you said
- 1:00Speaker 3: it got really cold there when the sun went down, huh?
- 1:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I mean, I think that they had a cold snap,
- 1:06Speaker 2: which wasn't showing up on my weather report immediately. But yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 2: it did get quite chilly, which I thought might give
- 1:14Speaker 2: us an advantage because those boys who play out there
- 1:18Speaker 2: in Pullman, they definitely have a little more experience than
- 1:21Speaker 2: those in Tucson, Arizona.
- 1:22Speaker 3: That's the thing about college football today. You'd think, well,
- 1:25Speaker 3: Arizona guys aren't used to playing in the cold. But
- 1:27Speaker 3: the Arizona guys could be from North Dakota. They could
- 1:29Speaker 3: be from UMass. Everyone transfers from everywhere anymore.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I know. There's no just like four-year or five-year players anymore.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Busy, busy weekend. We knew it was coming. The Seahawks
- 1:41Speaker 3: or the Mariners making changes and they do it from
- 1:44Speaker 3: Dan Wilson. I'm still not convinced he just didn't say
- 1:47Speaker 3: enough and resigned because I know it looked like and
- 1:52Speaker 3: Dan Wilson was pretty upset and emotional after the game,
- 1:54Speaker 3: but We're going to talk about the timing of this.
- 1:57Speaker 3: A lot of people say, well, give Rick Riz his day.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Why couldn't you do it today? There's a leadership reason,
- 2:05Speaker 3: I think, that Dan Wilson wanted to– if the decision
- 2:09Speaker 3: was indeed made this past week, is what the statement
- 2:12Speaker 3: from Jerry DiPoto said, conversations this past week, then as
- 2:17Speaker 3: a manager and a guy that spends 162 games the
- 2:19Speaker 3: last two years, 300-plus games, spring training– You want to
- 2:24Speaker 3: go out on your terms with your guys and telling
- 2:27Speaker 3: them in person yourself. You don't want that to come
- 2:30Speaker 3: out on the Monday, the day after the season when
- 2:32Speaker 3: the guys are taking off and leaving and going on
- 2:35Speaker 3: vacation or going back home to their families on the
- 2:37Speaker 3: Monday after the season ends. You want to be able
- 2:39Speaker 3: to look those guys in the eye and tell them yourself.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And that's why I think it happened yesterday is that
- 2:44Speaker 3: they gave opportunity for Dan Wilson to get in front
- 2:47Speaker 3: of the clubhouse and call a meeting, an impromptu meeting
- 2:49Speaker 3: an hour before the season finale and tell them himself.
- 2:54Speaker 3: And from a leadership perspective, that's how it should be.
- 2:58Speaker 3: For him personally, it would have been much worse if
- 3:01Speaker 3: the Mariners had made this decision today or tomorrow and
- 3:06Speaker 3: then the players are already gone and Wilson's left putting
- 3:09Speaker 3: out some hollow statement or a press conference in front
- 3:11Speaker 3: of us in the cameras instead of his players. I
- 3:14Speaker 3: have no problem with the timing of this for the
- 3:16Speaker 3: fact that it gave David Wilson the opportunity to say
- 3:18Speaker 3: goodbye to his guys.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It was a lot of goodbyes yesterday.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Yes.
- 3:21Speaker 4: It was. It was.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Including with Rick Riz. A lot of people thought that
- 3:25Speaker 3: this news obviously upstaged Rick Riz's final day, but Rick
- 3:29Speaker 3: Riz had a final week and final season, really, of
- 3:33Speaker 3: a curtain call.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Right.
- 3:34Speaker 2: We all knew that that was happening.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And the Mariners had celebrated him throughout the season and
- 3:40Speaker 3: the weekend. And you'll hear Rick Riz's final call here
- 3:43Speaker 3: in a few minutes yesterday. It was on Mariners radio,
- 3:46Speaker 3: it was on Mariners television. It was broadcast live to
- 3:48Speaker 3: the fans. Sold out park of 44,700 yesterday. But yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 3: 49451 at Tacoma Dutch text line. The first question I'd
- 3:57Speaker 3: ask is your thoughts on the timing of this announcement.
- 4:01Speaker 3: If you're still buying the fact that Wilson was fired,
- 4:04Speaker 3: I think he just said, OK, if you guys want
- 4:07Speaker 3: to go a different direction, I'll step out.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I don't know if we'll learn more about that, to
- 4:11Speaker 2: be honest.
- 4:12Speaker 3: That should be a question for Jerry DiPoto at one
- 4:14Speaker 3: o'clock today. We'll see if that gets it. I'm in
- 4:16Speaker 3: New York or else I'd ask it. But that would
- 4:19Speaker 3: be what I'd ask. Whose decision was this and how
- 4:22Speaker 3: to go down? And, of course, the number one question
- 4:25Speaker 3: is who next? If Jerry DiPoto and Justin Hollander are
- 4:29Speaker 3: staying for year 12 of this for DiPoto, who is
- 4:34Speaker 3: going to accept this managerial job after the last two?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Who's going to accept playing the way Jerry DiPoto demands
- 4:42Speaker 3: the Mariners play? And that's iPad baseball. And that's handedness.
- 4:46Speaker 3: And that's all that we saw and were frustrated by
- 4:50Speaker 3: this entire season.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Or might they go in another direction? And realize that
- 4:54Speaker 2: that isn't working.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Wouldn't you think that you're going to have to change
- 4:57Speaker 3: the guy on top of the baseball operations to go
- 4:59Speaker 3: a completely different direction?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yep.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I don't know how he's going to pivot out of
- 5:04Speaker 3: something he's done for 11 years. And what field manager
- 5:07Speaker 3: is going to– are you going to give anybody autonomy here?
- 5:10Speaker 3: I mean, that leadership is beginning to– that leadership question
- 5:14Speaker 3: and accountability question, and even the players we're talking about
- 5:17Speaker 3: this past weekend, including Cal Raleigh, including Logan Gilbert– If
- 5:22Speaker 3: they want to get a different accountability level in the dugout,
- 5:25Speaker 3: they need to give autonomy and authority to that manager.
- 5:29Speaker 3: And they need to throw away the iPads and let
- 5:30Speaker 3: the manager manage baseball games as he knows how to
- 5:33Speaker 3: do it, not as the front office knows how. That's
- 5:36Speaker 3: the kind of change that needs to happen with the Mariners.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Are they willing to do that? On the show today,
- 5:40Speaker 3: what I saw and heard and learned from the Seahawks'
- 5:42Speaker 3: first loss since last November here on the East Coast
- 5:45Speaker 3: in Washington in the rain yesterday, they got what they deserved.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And they still came within probably two plays from winning
- 5:51Speaker 3: that game. The Mariners' decision to fire Dan Wilson, did
- 5:54Speaker 3: he decide to resign? The press conference at 1 p.m.
- 5:56Speaker 3: today will carry it live. You'll hear my and a
- 6:00Speaker 3: couple other Seahawks beat guys talking in the locker room
- 6:02Speaker 3: yesterday in Maryland to Jadarian Price.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You got it. You got it.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Thanks. Price got benched. He was wearing a raincoat in
- 6:12Speaker 3: the first quarter yesterday. From the time he fumbled with
- 6:15Speaker 3: 11 minutes left in the first quarter, he didn't carry
- 6:19Speaker 3: the ball again until 12 minutes left in the third.
- 6:21Speaker 3: And he only had two more carries over the final
- 6:24Speaker 3: 49 minutes of that game. And they were throwing on
- 6:27Speaker 3: the goal line because Price wasn't in. And they didn't
- 6:31Speaker 3: run the ball because they had no faith at all
- 6:32Speaker 3: that anyone was going to run the ball. They ran
- 6:34Speaker 3: just 18 times for 44 yards. And Jessamyn, this team
- 6:38Speaker 3: is not going to win. We've talked about this a
- 6:40Speaker 3: lot with Sam Darnold throwing 45 times. I knew he
- 6:43Speaker 3: threw for 379 yards. But he threw 45 times, including
- 6:48Speaker 3: three straight times on the goal line when they failed
- 6:50Speaker 3: at fourth and goal. That's not at all how the
- 6:55Speaker 3: Seahawks can win and how they're going to play to win.
- 6:57Speaker 2: No, I'm surprised how many pass plays they actually ran.
- 7:01Speaker 3: What they ultimately did on offense, Jessamyn, is they sent
- 7:04Speaker 3: a message to Jadarian Price and it cost them a game.
- 7:08Speaker 3: They decided to bench him and not give him the
- 7:11Speaker 3: ball and not trust him and say, here's our message
- 7:13Speaker 3: to you, dude. You got to hold on to the
- 7:14Speaker 3: ball in this league. to play for us. And it
- 7:18Speaker 3: cost them the game. It made him throw the ball.
- 7:21Speaker 3: It made him throw the ball three straight times on
- 7:22Speaker 3: the goal line when he was on the bench. And
- 7:25Speaker 3: they sacrificed the game for the longer view and the
- 7:29Speaker 3: longer development of Jadarian Price. Offensively, they did. Now, they
- 7:33Speaker 3: made huge mistakes on defense. Their kickoff coverage and special
- 7:35Speaker 3: teams play was terrible. Starting field position for the commanders,
- 7:40Speaker 3: way too good. But offensively, they subverted what they wanted
- 7:45Speaker 3: to do on offense for the longer good of Jadarian Price.
- 7:49Speaker 3: They got him for four years, not just for a
- 7:52Speaker 3: rainy Sunday in September 2026 in Maryland. They got him
- 7:56Speaker 3: for the rest of the season, 15 more games, 14
- 7:58Speaker 3: more games, plus the playoffs, and they've got him for
- 8:02Speaker 3: three more years after this. And that's what yesterday was
- 8:05Speaker 3: about for him. You'll hear from Jadarian Price and what
- 8:08Speaker 3: he called the consequences he paid yesterday for fumbling for
- 8:12Speaker 3: the second time in as many games. 11 o'clock? We're excited.
- 8:15Speaker 3: We're going to talk live with Gary Hill Jr., friend
- 8:17Speaker 3: of ours, the Mariners broadcaster who was right there next
- 8:20Speaker 3: to Rick Riz for a very emotional day for Gary
- 8:22Speaker 3: Hill yesterday. His buddy, his good friend, Rick Riz on
- 8:26Speaker 3: his final day. And then the same day, someone that
- 8:30Speaker 3: they are close to. If you're a Mariners broadcaster, a
- 8:33Speaker 3: baseball team broadcaster, you're close to the manager. You travel
- 8:37Speaker 3: with them. You stay in the hotels with them. You
- 8:39Speaker 3: eat with them. You meet with them every day. You
- 8:42Speaker 3: spend six weeks with them in Arizona in spring training.
- 8:44Speaker 3: You get close to those guys. And yesterday was a big, big,
- 8:49Speaker 3: big day for Gary Hill Jr. A lot of speculation
- 8:52Speaker 3: on whether he is now going to move into the
- 8:55Speaker 3: lead broadcaster role for the Mariners. Of course, he's been
- 8:57Speaker 3: the number two broadcaster next to Rick Riz for the
- 8:59Speaker 3: last couple years. We will talk live at 11 o'clock
- 9:02Speaker 3: with Gary Hill Jr. about his big day yesterday, a
- 9:05Speaker 3: very emotional day for the Mariners and Mariner broadcaster Gary Hill.
- 9:09Speaker 3: We'll talk to him at 11 o'clock, 11.30 p.m. We'll
- 9:11Speaker 3: read back your texts and talkbacks on the Tacoma Dodge
- 9:13Speaker 3: text line, of course, 49451, and the talkbacks on the
- 9:15Speaker 3: iHeart Radio app. Download that for free if you haven't
- 9:18Speaker 3: done so already, 933-KJR on there, or our website, of course, 933-KJR.com,
- 9:23Speaker 3: The Greg Bell Show. There's a little red microphone button.
- 9:25Speaker 3: You press that, you leave a voicemail message of 30
- 9:28Speaker 3: seconds or less, and Jessamyn McIntyre will play that, I
- 9:31Speaker 3: promise you.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Uh-huh. You bet your booty I will.
- 9:35Speaker 3: 11.35, Factor Fiction, our first one of the week. Went 3-2,
- 9:40Speaker 3: another winning week for us last week. You got the
- 9:43Speaker 3: Giants game right. Good job, Miss New York.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Hello, and you know what? I was under 50%, in fact.
- 9:49Speaker 2: People did not believe me on that one. Yeah, yep.
- 9:54Speaker 7: All right.
- 9:54Speaker 2: But that means that everyone who did believe me has
- 9:57Speaker 2: a lot better chance of winning $ 1, 000.
- 9:59Speaker 3: That's your chance every day, four times a day on
- 10:05Speaker 3: 93.3 KJR. Thanks to the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 10:08Speaker 3: We'll do it again at 1135. Your chance to win $ 1, 000.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Ian Furness will join me, talk about what's on his
- 10:13Speaker 3: show from 12 until 3. Let's talk about the timing
- 10:17Speaker 3: of the Dan Wilson management. manager no longer manager 2027
- 10:20Speaker 3: they'll have a new one this is the third time
- 10:23Speaker 3: in four years the Mariners gonna have a new manager
- 10:26Speaker 3: some took issue with it from stealing from Rick Rizzo's
- 10:29Speaker 3: farewell day but again from the leadership perspective is why
- 10:32Speaker 3: I believe Wilson wanted it this way he told his
- 10:34Speaker 3: players before the season finale that he was leaving that
- 10:38Speaker 3: statement passive voice it was concluded makes me wonder again
- 10:42Speaker 3: was it John Stanton was it Jerry DiPoto or was
- 10:45Speaker 3: it Wilson who said, you know what, I'm done with this.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I did what you asked me to do. I came
- 10:49Speaker 3: in in the middle of a season a couple years ago.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I got two full seasons. I took you to the
- 10:52Speaker 3: brink of the world. See, I'm done. Wilson was asked
- 10:55Speaker 3: yesterday if this was a mutual decision or if DiPoto
- 10:58Speaker 3: or Stanton or the front office made it. Dan Wilson said, quote,
- 11:01Speaker 3: I've been in baseball a while, and this is what happens.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Managers shoulder the blame and shoulder the responsibility, and this
- 11:08Speaker 3: is obviously difficult. And my family and I are, like
- 11:13Speaker 3: I said, still processing it, and we'll get through. So
- 11:16Speaker 3: he didn't answer that question. But let's be clear. The
- 11:19Speaker 3: wrong guy's leaving here. Jerry DiPoto, 11 years, two playoff appearances,
- 11:23Speaker 3: 10 years of not winning the AL West. But two
- 11:27Speaker 3: dozen Mariner owners are profiting. The team drew 2.88 million
- 11:31Speaker 3: fans this season. Another sellout yesterday, 44,700. The Mariners averaged
- 11:34Speaker 3: 35,558 people per game. That's the seventh best attendance in
- 11:37Speaker 3: Major League Baseball. It was the Mariners' best attendance season
- 11:47Speaker 3: in 22 years, since 2004. The team's been in the
- 11:51Speaker 3: top half of Major League Baseball in revenue, bottom half
- 11:54Speaker 3: of player payroll. The business model is flourishing. We've talked
- 11:57Speaker 3: about this many times. The baseball operation, the return on
- 12:00Speaker 3: investment for those two dozen owners is flourishing. The baseball
- 12:05Speaker 3: operations is failing. Yet the two dozen owners who are
- 12:09Speaker 3: making the money and the ROIs are high, they don't mind.
- 12:13Speaker 3: the president of baseball operations and how it's going. Cause
- 12:16Speaker 3: it's working from their perspective. They're getting the ROI they want.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:20Speaker 3: So the baseball president of baseball operations stays and they
- 12:24Speaker 3: aren't going to the world series for the 50th consecutive year.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I mean, that's really the dichotomy here. That's, that's the rub.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I go back to the beginning of
- 12:32Speaker 2: the season because I think we asked this question several
- 12:35Speaker 2: times on this station, whether it was world series or
- 12:38Speaker 2: bust this year. And, even a post-season birth, I don't
- 12:42Speaker 2: think would be enough for people. And I just... I
- 12:47Speaker 2: find it like how, so if you were a World
- 12:50Speaker 2: Series or bust at the beginning of the season and
- 12:52Speaker 2: they don't get a sniff at the postseason, how disappointing
- 12:56Speaker 2: is that? And I think that's why this is being
- 12:59Speaker 2: considered one of the worst, most disappointing seasons in Mariner history.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I don't think it's even one-up, Jessamyn, do you? I mean,
- 13:06Speaker 3: it's the most disappointing. Going from eight outs to the
- 13:10Speaker 3: World Series to 10 games under.
- 13:12Speaker 7: 500?
- 13:13Speaker 3: I don't know if it's even a debate. You might
- 13:15Speaker 3: be right. I think it's by far. I mean, 100
- 13:19Speaker 3: lost teams. We knew they were bad. Joe Lefevre, the Kingdom,
- 13:25Speaker 3: Maury Wills. Come on. Those teams suck. This team was
- 13:28Speaker 3: eight outs from the World Series. And not only that,
- 13:32Speaker 3: played in a division that was the worst ever for
- 13:34Speaker 3: a division. They've never before.
- 13:36Speaker 2: That adds to it.
- 13:37Speaker 3: In a full season.
- 13:37Speaker 2: That adds to it.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Never before in Major League Baseball over a full season
- 13:42Speaker 3: has a division winner won without a winning record until yesterday.
- 13:45Speaker 3: 81 and 81 won the division. If you were just mediocre,
- 13:52Speaker 3: you should have won the AOS, and they were sub-mediocre,
- 13:55Speaker 3: 10 games under. 500. No way. No way you can
- 13:59Speaker 3: run the baseball operations back as they are, and they
- 14:02Speaker 3: are going to. And now the challenge is to have
- 14:04Speaker 3: the same baseball operations, the same analytics, the same iPad baseball,
- 14:09Speaker 3: hire a new manager and expect different results. 49451 at
- 14:16Speaker 3: Tacoma Dodge Tech. How do you think of that plan?
- 14:19Speaker 3: What's your view of that plan? Same baseball operator, new manager.
- 14:24Speaker 2: It will be interesting to hear from Jerry DePoto at
- 14:27Speaker 2: one o'clock, which we will have live.
- 14:29Speaker 1: We will.
- 14:30Speaker 2: From the press box. Will it be? From the press box.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Are we going to hear more smug? I told you so.
- 14:36Speaker 3: I know best. Trust in me. I'm doing you a favor.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I really hope he doesn't do a throwback to the 54% thing. Oh,
- 14:43Speaker 2: that sounds pretty good right now or something like that.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I don't think he will.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Do you realize if they had won 54% of their games,
- 14:50Speaker 3: they'd be the number two seed in the American League
- 14:52Speaker 3: right now?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yes, I do. I did that.
- 14:54Speaker 3: They'd have a first round bye.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 3: 54% would have even been good enough and they didn't
- 14:59Speaker 3: even achieve that.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 15:02Speaker 3: 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line. If you were
- 15:04Speaker 3: in The Jerry DePoto press conference at one o'clock this afternoon.
- 15:09Speaker 3: What would you ask? First, well, just to let you know,
- 15:13Speaker 3: you would have to check your eggs at the door.
- 15:15Speaker 3: They wouldn't let you bring your carton of eggs in
- 15:17Speaker 3: and throw them at Jerry DePoto. Or your shoes.
- 15:19Speaker 2: Just your voice. Just your voice.
- 15:22Speaker 3: What would you ask?
- 15:23Speaker 2: All right. Who was the politician who got a– was
- 15:25Speaker 2: that George W. Bush?
- 15:26Speaker 3: George W.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Bush? Yeah.
- 15:27Speaker 3: The second George Bush? Was that a press– it was
- 15:30Speaker 3: over in– I think it was either Europe or North Africa?
- 15:33Speaker 2: I don't remember exactly where it was. I just know
- 15:35Speaker 2: that he got a shoe thrown.
- 15:38Speaker 3: He dodged it.
- 15:38Speaker 2: So that will not be happening. And I'm wearing boots today,
- 15:41Speaker 2: so I will not be throwing anything.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Jessamyn will be there. You want to hear what Dan
- 15:47Speaker 3: Wilson said? We'll do that next on the next segment.
- 15:49Speaker 3: But let's first talk about Rick Ritt.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yes. I wanted to get to that.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Yes.
- 15:53Speaker 3: 41 years of broadcasting for the Mariners. This was his
- 15:56Speaker 3: final call on Mariners radio on TV and to the
- 15:59Speaker 3: 44,700 fans in the stadium yesterday. It's been a heck
- 16:02Speaker 3: of a ride this year.
- 16:03Speaker 8: Some ups and downs and all around us, but the
- 16:07Speaker 8: Mariners will wind down 2026. In our 50th season. Man,
- 16:12Speaker 8: how about the celebration we had about a month ago.
- 16:14Speaker 8: Here's the pitch on the way to Zach Netto. And
- 16:17Speaker 8: it's a strike at the count 0-1. Bringing in the
- 16:19Speaker 8: 50 greatest players in the history of the franchise. All
- 16:23Speaker 8: in one place. What a celebration to celebrate the history.
- 16:27Speaker 8: Of this franchise. And to bring Jay Buhner back today.
- 16:29Speaker 8: Ken Griffey Jr. Swing and a fly ball. Deep in
- 16:32Speaker 8: the right field. Ken's on going back. He's there and
- 16:34Speaker 8: he makes the catch. And the ball game is over.
- 16:38Speaker 8: The Mariners win the finale of 20-26.
- 16:41Speaker 3: 7-3 over the Angels.
- 16:42Speaker 8: To take the final two games of the season. So
- 16:47Speaker 8: the players will walk off the field with a win
- 16:50Speaker 8: here in game number 162. What a crowd this afternoon
- 16:55Speaker 8: of 44,761 fans. A bittersweet ending, but ending on a
- 16:59Speaker 8: positive note with a couple of wins back-to-back. The guys
- 17:05Speaker 8: out there at second base doing their happy dance.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I love that.
- 17:09Speaker 8: I love these guys, folks. And I tell you what,
- 17:12Speaker 8: they're going to get you to the promised land. They're
- 17:15Speaker 8: going to get you to the postseason next year. There's
- 17:17Speaker 8: going to be a lot of work done between now
- 17:19Speaker 8: and spring training. And it's going to be a fun spring,
- 17:22Speaker 8: and I want to see you there. So a tough year,
- 17:25Speaker 8: of course, with the expectations for this ball club here
- 17:29Speaker 8: in 2026. And it didn't happen this year. It almost
- 17:33Speaker 8: happened last year. It's going to happen next season. So
- 17:36Speaker 8: keep supporting this ball club because I love these guys.
- 17:39Speaker 7: Not only are.
- 17:40Speaker 8: They great players, they're great guys. So that's it for
- 17:45Speaker 8: the 2026 season. And on behalf of everybody up here
- 17:48Speaker 8: in the broadcast booth, I want to say thank you
- 17:51Speaker 8: for supporting the Mariners and supporting what I have done,
- 17:54Speaker 8: what I've been here for 41 seasons. I can't thank
- 17:57Speaker 8: you enough. It has been a joy and a privilege
- 18:00Speaker 8: to bring you Mariners baseball. And I will never forget you.
- 18:03Speaker 8: I will never forget my time here in Seattle. But
- 18:06Speaker 8: I'm still going to be around. So a wonderful chapter
- 18:10Speaker 8: in my life comes to an end right now. I'm
- 18:12Speaker 8: looking forward to the next chapter, and I want to
- 18:14Speaker 8: celebrate it with you. Anytime I see you, please, let's
- 18:17Speaker 8: talk some Mariners baseball. So thank you so much.
- 18:21Speaker 9: I love you guys.
- 18:22Speaker 8: Final score, the Mariners 7 and the Angels 3 here
- 18:26Speaker 8: at T-Mobile Park.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Rick Riz yesterday on the final out of the Mariners'
- 18:31Speaker 3: final game, a 7-3 win over the Angels at T-Mobile Park.
- 18:35Speaker 3: And then they came back from commercial break. They connected
- 18:38Speaker 3: his radio feed to the entire stadium PA. The players
- 18:43Speaker 3: stood on the field and looked up at the radio
- 18:45Speaker 3: booth to listen to a extended goodbye from Rick Riz.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Ken Griffey Jr. was on the field standing next to
- 18:53Speaker 3: Jay Buhner.
- 18:54Speaker 2: And they all raised their hats.
- 18:57Speaker 3: They did. It was a cool little poignant moment. at
- 19:00Speaker 3: the end of a very disappointing season. And I got credit,
- 19:03Speaker 3: Rick Riz, a company guy to the end. Hey, stick
- 19:05Speaker 3: with these guys. They're going to get us to the
- 19:06Speaker 3: promised land. He's right through the final out, past the
- 19:11Speaker 3: final out, still toeing the party line. You got to
- 19:14Speaker 3: appreciate that about the end of a 41 year career
- 19:17Speaker 3: for Rick Riz and the Mariners on the last broadcast.
- 19:21Speaker 3: We'll talk to Gary Hill Jr. about that emotional day
- 19:24Speaker 3: in the broadcast booth at 11 o'clock. The Mariners broadcaster
- 19:26Speaker 3: with Rick Riz will talk to us at 11 o'clock,
- 19:29Speaker 3: but up next, How Dan Wilson announced his own firing
- 19:33Speaker 3: or his own resigning, whatever you want to call it.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I think he resigned. What he said, the players' reaction
- 19:38Speaker 3: to their manager gone. 1045, you're going to hear from
- 19:41Speaker 3: Jadarian Price in the locker room here on the East
- 19:43Speaker 3: Coast yesterday when I talked to him after his fumbles
- 19:45Speaker 3: and benching in the Seahawks' first loss in 10 months. 11.35,
- 19:50Speaker 3: Fact or Fiction, your chance to win $ 1, 000 from Lucky
- 19:53Speaker 3: Eagle Casino and Hotel. All that's coming up from New
- 19:55Speaker 3: York on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Now back to Countdown to Monday Night Football with Greg Bell.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frost Brewed Coors Light. Cold as
- 20:10Speaker 1: the Rockies. On Sports Radio 93.3, AJR FM.
- 20:22Speaker 3: Back here in New York City. I mean, just across
- 20:25Speaker 3: the river in Brooklyn, actually, from Manhattan. And we're here, 93.3,
- 20:29Speaker 3: KJR FM, on our Football Monday, Monday Night Football show.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Coming up tonight, the undefeated 2-0. Undefeated, kind of undefeated.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Philadelphia Eagles at the Chicago Bears, 5-15. You'll hear that
- 20:39Speaker 3: live on KJR. Dave Softy, Mahler, and Dick Fane will
- 20:42Speaker 3: take you up to that broadcast from Westwood 1 at 5-15.
- 20:44Speaker 3: I thought I was going to be talking leading about
- 20:48Speaker 3: the Seahawks and my trip here to the East Coast
- 20:50Speaker 3: to see them lose yesterday in Washington because of three turnovers,
- 20:53Speaker 3: two by Sam Darnold, an awful interception pick six that
- 20:57Speaker 3: he admitted he should have just dirtied the ball on.
- 20:59Speaker 3: And we are going to talk about that, the benching
- 21:01Speaker 3: of Jadarian Price for his second fumble in as many games.
- 21:03Speaker 3: But then the Dan Wilson news broke about the time
- 21:06Speaker 3: the Seahawks were losing yesterday here in Washington. And so
- 21:10Speaker 3: we're going to talk about Dan Wilson being out as
- 21:12Speaker 3: the manager. The team's going to be searching for its
- 21:14Speaker 3: third new field manager in four years. Dan Wilson called
- 21:18Speaker 3: an impromptu team meeting an hour before the first pitch
- 21:20Speaker 3: of the season finale because after talks in the past
- 21:23Speaker 3: week among the baseball decision makers, the Mariners decided to
- 21:26Speaker 3: make a move. It was concluded. Both in the statement,
- 21:31Speaker 3: that's how it was phrased, passive voice, no ownership, no
- 21:34Speaker 3: noun before the verb. And you'll hear Dan Wilson saying
- 21:37Speaker 3: the same thing. It was concluded. This was Dan Wilson
- 21:40Speaker 3: after the game yesterday, his final one as Mariner manager.
- 21:45Speaker 10: This state, sorry, this season has been very difficult. And,
- 21:50Speaker 10: of course, the results have not been what any of
- 21:52Speaker 10: us have expected. As a result, it was concluded that
- 21:56Speaker 10: today is my last day as manager of the Seattle Mariners.
- 22:00Speaker 10: I'm still processing this with my family, and it's a
- 22:03Speaker 10: very difficult day.
- 22:05Speaker 9: We love this city. We love this community.
- 22:10Speaker 10: And we appreciated the organization for what it has meant
- 22:12Speaker 10: to the family since.
- 22:14Speaker 9: Coming here as a player in 94.
- 22:16Speaker 10: We feel extremely blessed by all the opportunities we've been afforded.
- 22:19Speaker 10: We've raised our family here, and we will continue to
- 22:22Speaker 10: call Seattle home. First, I just want to thank my wife,
- 22:27Speaker 10: who has been my rock. and solid foundation through this
- 22:31Speaker 10: baseball journey. Jumping back into baseball brought many obstacles, but
- 22:36Speaker 10: we weathered them together.
- 22:38Speaker 9: And thank you for everything. It's always better together.
- 22:43Speaker 10: Secondly, I'd like to thank the incredible coaching staff and
- 22:48Speaker 10: support staff that has worked so tirelessly over these last
- 22:52Speaker 10: couple years.
- 22:54Speaker 9: They have stuck with it, and they have stuck with
- 22:56Speaker 9: me through thick and thin.
- 22:58Speaker 10: My gratitude cannot accurately be expressed for their countless hours
- 23:03Speaker 10: of analyzing video, working with players, and making us better
- 23:07Speaker 10: on the field. I will cherish each relationship with these
- 23:11Speaker 10: staff members, and I wish them all continued success going forward.
- 23:16Speaker 9: Thank you for giving all of yourselves every day.
- 23:20Speaker 10: I also wish to thank the special group of players
- 23:22Speaker 10: in that clubhouse. It has been an honor and a
- 23:25Speaker 10: privilege to work with you over these last couple seasons.
- 23:29Speaker 10: You are an incredibly talented group and have shown overwhelming
- 23:31Speaker 10: resiliency over the last couple of seasons. You fight and
- 23:35Speaker 10: it is exactly that fight that will bring you back
- 23:38Speaker 10: to prominence. Thank you for all your dedication and hard
- 23:41Speaker 10: work every day.
- 23:43Speaker 9: And thank you for fighting as you did each and
- 23:44Speaker 9: every ball game.
- 23:47Speaker 10: I love all of you and your families and pray
- 23:49Speaker 10: for continued blessings as you continue on with your baseball journeys. Lastly,
- 23:55Speaker 10: I'd like to thank the Seattle fans.
- 23:56Speaker 9: You are our inspiration.
- 23:59Speaker 10: Hearing Team Mobile Park back in October last year, and
- 24:02Speaker 10: seeing the support you gave us even during a difficult
- 24:04Speaker 10: season is greatly appreciated.
- 24:07Speaker 9: Thank you for always being there. I don't know what
- 24:10Speaker 9: the future holds.
- 24:12Speaker 10: The Mariners organization has expressed interest in a role going forward,
- 24:15Speaker 10: and I look forward to investigating those options.
- 24:17Speaker 7: In the future.
- 24:18Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Dan, was this your decision or was this a decision
- 24:24Speaker 3: made for you?
- 24:25Speaker 9: You know, this was, you know, I've been in baseball
- 24:28Speaker 9: a while, you know, this is what happens. Managers shoulder
- 24:31Speaker 9: the blame and, uh, shoulder the responsibility.
- 24:34Speaker 10: And, um, you know, this is, uh, obviously difficult and, uh,
- 24:39Speaker 10: my family and I are still, like I said, still
- 24:40Speaker 10: processing it and, and, uh, we'll get through it.
- 24:43Speaker 3: You've been part of this organization, like you said, for
- 24:45Speaker 3: more than 30 years, just what are the emotions here
- 24:47Speaker 3: to end this chapter like this?
- 24:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:49Speaker 9: I mean, um, you know, not how we wanted to
- 24:52Speaker 9: turn it, you know, how we wanted it to turn out.
- 24:53Speaker 9: That's just, you know, how these things go.
- 24:55Speaker 10: And, um, you know, uh, it's, it's, it's been a
- 24:59Speaker 10: difficult season and it's been, you know, a difficult stretch. Um, but, uh,
- 25:05Speaker 10: you know, you kind of contrast that with the joy and, and,
- 25:08Speaker 10: and the incredible, um, season that we had last year.
- 25:11Speaker 9: And, uh, um, you know, baseball is, it's, it's never,
- 25:15Speaker 9: you know, it's, it's never over until it's over. And, and, uh, um,
- 25:19Speaker 9: this was, you know, clearly a, um, you know, different
- 25:22Speaker 9: type of season.
- 25:23Speaker 10: Um, and, uh, But, you know, all in all, it's
- 25:28Speaker 10: still kind of processing everything that's going through.
- 25:33Speaker 3: That was Dan Wilson yesterday after the Mariners' season finale
- 25:35Speaker 3: announcing his own departure as Mariners' manager. Credit to Ryan Divish,
- 25:41Speaker 3: the beat writer for the Seattle Times, for asking the
- 25:43Speaker 3: first question that everyone wanted to know. Was this his
- 25:46Speaker 3: decision or was it the team's front office, the president
- 25:50Speaker 3: of baseball operations, Jerry DiPoto, chief owner? John Stanton's decision,
- 25:55Speaker 3: and you heard his answer. He didn't really answer that.
- 25:57Speaker 3: He said, this is the way it goes in baseball.
- 25:59Speaker 3: The manager shoulders the blame, shoulders the responsibility. The statement
- 26:04Speaker 3: that the Mariners put out in passive voice, not assigning
- 26:06Speaker 3: ownership to who concluded, just saying it was concluded. Dan
- 26:11Speaker 3: Wilson will no longer be the Mariners manager after two
- 26:13Speaker 3: full seasons. The players had, of course, a lot to
- 26:18Speaker 3: say about this. Adam Jude had a story in the
- 26:21Speaker 3: Seattle Times today. Cal Raleigh called yesterday, quote, a hard day.
- 26:25Speaker 3: You feel terrible. You feel responsible. And I think every
- 26:29Speaker 3: guy in this clubhouse does. Starting pitcher Logan Gilbert said, quote,
- 26:34Speaker 3: it's definitely shocking because of the success that we had
- 26:37Speaker 3: last year. But it was so drastic of a turnaround
- 26:41Speaker 3: this year. Unfortunately, I feel like we let him down
- 26:45Speaker 3: in that regard, and he had to pay the price
- 26:47Speaker 3: for us underperforming. That's well said by Logan Gilbert. Gilbert
- 26:51Speaker 3: went on to say, I love Dan. Like, who he
- 26:54Speaker 3: is as a person, his values, his integrity, very apparent.
- 26:57Speaker 3: He lives it out. It means a lot as a player.
- 27:00Speaker 3: That's the type of guy you want to play for.
- 27:03Speaker 3: Starting pitcher Brian Wu said, quote, you build a relationship
- 27:07Speaker 3: with a guy like that, and it's really difficult to
- 27:09Speaker 3: see him just wear everything this year. He meant to
- 27:12Speaker 3: everyone in this clubhouse and the building. It's hard to describe,
- 27:16Speaker 3: but as a group, we failed him much more then
- 27:19Speaker 3: he failed us, Brian Wu said of Dan Wilson. The
- 27:22Speaker 3: only thing that you can ask for in terms of
- 27:24Speaker 3: a relationship like that is just truth, and that's what
- 27:27Speaker 3: you got from him every day, Wu said. I don't
- 27:29Speaker 3: want fluff. I don't want bull, expletive. I want the truth,
- 27:34Speaker 3: whether I like it or not, and he's always there
- 27:36Speaker 3: to give it to you. Those are the Mariners players
- 27:39Speaker 3: yesterday after Dan Wilson announced as no longer. the manager
- 27:45Speaker 3: of the Seattle Mariners, after they go 10 games under.
- 27:47Speaker 3: 500 in the most frustrating, most disappointing season of the
- 27:51Speaker 3: 50 of them, of Mariners baseball. Once again, no World
- 27:54Speaker 3: Series in Seattle for the 50th consecutive year. All signs are,
- 27:59Speaker 3: including reported by Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, which is affiliated
- 28:02Speaker 3: with the team, all signs are that Jerry DiPoto and
- 28:05Speaker 3: Justin Hollander will come back in 2027, that John Stanton
- 28:09Speaker 3: and the ownership group have decided the president of baseball
- 28:12Speaker 3: operations is Jerry DiPoto will return for the 12th time,
- 28:17Speaker 3: 12th season in a row. 10 of his first 11
- 28:21Speaker 3: seasons without a division championship. And here we go. The
- 28:25Speaker 3: same baseball operations head with a new task to rebuild
- 28:30Speaker 3: the baseball operations of the Mariners.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm very curious as to what direction they'll go
- 28:35Speaker 2: with their new manager. I am very curious.
- 28:38Speaker 7: I don't.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Don't know if they will decide to pivot and go
- 28:42Speaker 2: away from iPad baseball, as you like to call it.
- 28:45Speaker 3: I just, I have to think, how are they going
- 28:49Speaker 3: to attract anyone but a first-time manager? What is Manny
- 28:51Speaker 3: Acta thinking right now? Who's been on this staff for
- 28:54Speaker 3: a couple years. The coaching staff, the manager's coaching staff
- 28:59Speaker 3: is going to change.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Now there's... Well, and Edgar as well. You put him
- 29:02Speaker 2: in that category as well.
- 29:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 3: And I would, Manny Acta has managed before. would he
- 29:08Speaker 3: want to come back? He saw firsthand what Dan Wilson
- 29:11Speaker 3: was hamstrung by and the pieces he was left to
- 29:15Speaker 3: work with and the roster construction and the dictates from
- 29:19Speaker 3: up high on how to play and that handedness of
- 29:22Speaker 3: batting Rob Refschneider in clutch situations, even though your gut
- 29:24Speaker 3: said to keep Domkin's own or Luke Raylor, whoever else
- 29:28Speaker 3: Refschneider was replacing in the game, just to leave one example.
- 29:32Speaker 3: Why would Maniakta come back for that? Steven is out there,
- 29:38Speaker 3: the former A's manager, local ties. from the South Sound
- 29:40Speaker 3: of Olympia. I have to think they need to get someone, Jessamyn,
- 29:46Speaker 3: with managerial experience. And as our friend Larry Stone likes
- 29:50Speaker 3: to say, with the gravitas of being a major league
- 29:53Speaker 3: manager and having won before. But How much gravitas can
- 29:57Speaker 3: someone have and yet still be subversive to how Jerry
- 30:01Speaker 3: DiPoto demands the Mariners play? And that to me is
- 30:05Speaker 3: the rub here. How are they going to find a
- 30:07Speaker 3: manager with a track record of success in Major League
- 30:10Speaker 3: Baseball when the leadership requires you to do exactly what
- 30:15Speaker 3: they say, how they play? Is he going to change
- 30:18Speaker 3: his stripes, Jerry DiPoto, for year 12 after the first
- 30:21Speaker 3: 11 of doing it one way?
- 30:22Speaker 2: Well, I think right now he kind of has to.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Does he?
- 30:26Speaker 2: I think so. I mean, yeah, I know that you
- 30:29Speaker 2: conflate the success of the team financially with the lack
- 30:34Speaker 2: of success on the baseball field. But I think that
- 30:37Speaker 2: if you want to win, you do have to make
- 30:39Speaker 2: a move to keep the business side successful. I agree
- 30:42Speaker 2: with you. Because the park was full. The park was
- 30:45Speaker 2: full because of the success we saw on the field
- 30:48Speaker 2: last year. People were pumped for this team because the
- 30:52Speaker 2: majority of it stayed the same and we saw how
- 30:54Speaker 2: close they got. So I really don't think that there
- 30:58Speaker 2: is another choice to do the same exact thing. I
- 31:04Speaker 2: don't think that you have that choice.
- 31:07Speaker 3: I agree with you. But the mandate is, is it
- 31:11Speaker 3: from Jerry DePoto or is it from John Stanton and
- 31:13Speaker 3: the ownership group?
- 31:14Speaker 2: That's a good question too.
- 31:16Speaker 3: That would be another question I'd ask Jerry DePoto. What
- 31:20Speaker 3: is your mandate from ownership? With this managerial chain, what
- 31:25Speaker 3: is your mandate? What have you been told why you
- 31:27Speaker 3: had to make the move or Dan Wilson making a
- 31:31Speaker 3: move for you? And what is your mandate from ownership
- 31:34Speaker 3: on who you get next? Or is ownership so hands
- 31:37Speaker 3: off because the business product is flourishing that it is
- 31:40Speaker 3: solely autonomously up to Jerry DePoto on whom to hire
- 31:45Speaker 3: as the next manager with what background and what qualities?
- 31:48Speaker 3: And is that some of the problem? Now, John Stanton
- 31:51Speaker 3: obviously had a say in pulling Dan Wilson out of
- 31:54Speaker 3: a ceremonial role in the organization to become a first-time
- 31:57Speaker 3: manager to replace Scott Service two and a half years ago.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Jerry DiPoto didn't make that move, but you know that already.
- 32:03Speaker 3: But is John Stanton so detached and so satisfied with
- 32:09Speaker 3: he and his investors' return on their investment on the
- 32:11Speaker 3: baseball business side that he is going to leave this
- 32:16Speaker 3: decision to Jerry DiPoto? I sure hope not. But– You
- 32:20Speaker 3: could see them doing it. You could see them saying, hey,
- 32:22Speaker 3: we're good on our side. You go fix your side,
- 32:24Speaker 3: Jerry DiPoto. And therein lies the problem. You're asking the
- 32:29Speaker 3: same guy who's been in charge of baseball operations for
- 32:31Speaker 3: the last 11 years to fix the baseball operations. He's
- 32:34Speaker 3: going to fix it with the tools and the thinking
- 32:36Speaker 3: he knows how. But, man, as a grammatarian or someone
- 32:41Speaker 3: who writes for a living and someone who teaches communication
- 32:43Speaker 3: to grad students at the University of Washington, that passive
- 32:46Speaker 3: voice statement, it just bugged the hell out of me.
- 32:50Speaker 3: That just personified, exemplified in writing the lack of accountability
- 32:55Speaker 3: in this organization. Put someone's name on that. I, Jerry DePoto,
- 33:00Speaker 3: decided that we are not going to have Dan Wilson
- 33:03Speaker 3: as manager next year. Or John Stanton and the ownership
- 33:06Speaker 3: group have decided. Not it has been concluded. By whom?
- 33:11Speaker 3: I write on my students' papers all the time and read.
- 33:14Speaker 3: I still use a pen, not typing. Oh, yeah.
- 33:17Speaker 2: No, I'm the same. I'm the same. It goes in
- 33:19Speaker 2: my brain better if I write it down instead of typing.
- 33:21Speaker 3: By whom? Every time they use passive voice, I write
- 33:24Speaker 3: in the margin. By whom? By whom was it concluded
- 33:28Speaker 3: that they needed a change at manager? Own that stuff.
- 33:32Speaker 3: But the lack of accountability and leadership in this organization
- 33:35Speaker 3: starts at the very top, including in how they relieve
- 33:38Speaker 3: their manager of duties. That was pretty telling. I thought
- 33:41Speaker 3: it was a very symbolic use of passive voice. But, hey,
- 33:47Speaker 3: they're asking baseball operations to change with the same head
- 33:50Speaker 3: of baseball operations that's been here for the last 11
- 33:52Speaker 3: years and has failed to win the division 10 times
- 33:54Speaker 3: and has failed to go to the World Series 11
- 33:56Speaker 3: times out of 11 years for an organization that has
- 33:59Speaker 3: failed to make the World Series in all 50 years
- 34:01Speaker 3: of its existence. And we're supposed to buy in that
- 34:05Speaker 3: this is going to work? Whew. 49451, they got the
- 34:11Speaker 3: wrong cooks in the kitchen? I'd like to hear your
- 34:14Speaker 3: opinion about this. I think they got the wrong guy.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Or at the very least, there should be multiple guys going.
- 34:20Speaker 3: The baseball operations problems run that deep. Up next, let's
- 34:23Speaker 3: go to the Seahawks, what I came here to the
- 34:25Speaker 3: East Coast for. I was in the locker room yesterday.
- 34:28Speaker 3: I saw Jadarian Price. He was in the corner of
- 34:30Speaker 3: the room. He was kind enough to talk about the
- 34:33Speaker 3: worst day of his so far young NFL career when
- 34:36Speaker 3: he fumbled for the second time in as many games
- 34:38Speaker 3: and got benched, was wearing a raincoat for much of
- 34:40Speaker 3: the first half while Emmanuel Wilson replaced him. You'll hear
- 34:43Speaker 3: from the rookie first-round pick, the supposed replacement, For Kenneth Walker,
- 34:48Speaker 3: who was benched yesterday, and his word, consequences, he paid
- 34:51Speaker 3: for that. You'll hear from Jadarian Price next. $ 11. 35 factor fiction,
- 34:55Speaker 3: a chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino Resort.
- 34:58Speaker 3: And live at 11 o'clock on our air, Gary Hill Jr.,
- 35:01Speaker 3: the Mariners broadcaster, talking about a very emotional day for
- 35:04Speaker 3: the team, for him, for Rick Riz. All that's coming
- 35:06Speaker 3: up on a packed show on a Monday on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Now back to Countdown to Monday Night Football with Greg Bell.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frost Brewed Coors Light. Cold as
- 35:24Speaker 1: the Rockies. On Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Hi, welcome back. Busy, busy Sports Monday here in Seattle.
- 35:38Speaker 3: 93.3 KJR FM, Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre with you. The
- 35:41Speaker 3: day after the Seahawks lose for the first time in
- 35:43Speaker 3: 10 months. turning the ball over three times, 33-31 at
- 35:47Speaker 3: the Washington Commanders. The day after, Dan Wilson relieved of
- 35:51Speaker 3: his duties, or did he quit, as manager of the
- 35:55Speaker 3: Seattle Mariners after two full seasons. Jerry DiPoto at 1 o'clock,
- 35:58Speaker 3: a live press conference today from Seattle. We'll carry it
- 36:00Speaker 3: live here on KJR. Factor Fiction is at 11.35, your
- 36:04Speaker 3: next chance to win $ 1, 000. We got someone who just
- 36:08Speaker 3: won $ 1, 000 for what we did last week on Factor Fiction.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Johnny Escobedo of Vancouver, Washington. With the winning pick, he
- 36:15Speaker 3: got picked, drawn out of a hat as a winner
- 36:17Speaker 3: from last week. And the winning pick he got, he
- 36:20Speaker 3: picked fiction on Jessamyn's Carolina minus two and a half.
- 36:23Speaker 2: All right, Johnny, let's go out for drinks, dude.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Jessamyn made Johnny Escobedo of Vancouver, Washington, a winner. The
- 36:32Speaker 3: Browns are two and one now that they're beating Carolina yesterday.
- 36:35Speaker 3: So that's how it works. Johnny was right. And so
- 36:38Speaker 3: his name was put in the winner's pool and his
- 36:40Speaker 3: name was drawn out of a hat today by Anderson Hurst.
- 36:43Speaker 3: And he wins $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino Resort.
- 36:45Speaker 3: It's just that easy. 20 chances to win each week.
- 36:48Speaker 3: The next one's coming at 1135. Yesterday, the Seahawks didn't win.
- 36:53Speaker 3: First time since last November. And Jadarian Price was part
- 36:56Speaker 3: of the reason why. He fumbled on his third carry,
- 37:00Speaker 3: trying to gain an extra yard in his own end.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Got hit before he fell. Originally, it was ruled as down.
- 37:05Speaker 3: But then a quick replay review showed the ball was out.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Boston at the 21 handed the Commanders the first points
- 37:12Speaker 3: of the game and sent a winless team off to
- 37:14Speaker 3: a fast start against the Super Bowl champions. Mike McDonald
- 37:17Speaker 3: benched their rookie first-round pick onto the sidelines in a
- 37:20Speaker 3: raincoat for the first and second quarters. He was watching
- 37:24Speaker 3: Emmanuel Wilson run for him. After the fumble with 11
- 37:27Speaker 3: minutes left in the first quarter, Jadarian Price didn't carry
- 37:29Speaker 3: the ball again until the third quarter. And in the
- 37:32Speaker 3: final 49 minutes after his fumble, he carried the ball
- 37:35Speaker 3: just twice. This was Jadarian Price in the locker room.
- 37:39Speaker 3: I talked to him yesterday in Landover, Maryland, after the loss.
- 37:42Speaker 3: This is the rookie running back, what he said. What
- 37:44Speaker 3: do you make of the run game today and not
- 37:45Speaker 3: being able to get much going?
- 37:48Speaker 11: I made a mistake early on, so I just got
- 37:54Speaker 11: to deal with the consequences that come with that.
- 37:57Speaker 3: What's the fix for you? Two fumbles.
- 38:02Speaker 11: Just be more focused on the situation instead of trying
- 38:05Speaker 11: to make a move.
- 38:06Speaker 3: You were trying to get extra yard or two there
- 38:08Speaker 3: when you landed and fumbled on that time. Is it
- 38:11Speaker 3: a push and push and just go down? And of
- 38:13Speaker 3: course you're trying to get every yard you can.
- 38:15Speaker 11: Yeah, just trying to get every yard I can, but
- 38:17Speaker 11: I just got to focus on checking the ball.
- 38:19Speaker 10: Do you think that, is that a fundamental fix at all,
- 38:23Speaker 10: or is it just a mindset thing?
- 38:25Speaker 3: How do you kind of define what that is?
- 38:26Speaker 8: Yeah, mindset thing.
- 38:28Speaker 10: Is there any message from the coaching staff to you
- 38:31Speaker 10: in the first half after the fumble, or how did
- 38:33Speaker 10: you feel like you responded from it?
- 38:35Speaker 11: Just that it was, my name would get called again,
- 38:38Speaker 11: so I just had to be patient and stay ready
- 38:41Speaker 11: and flush in the pass.
- 38:43Speaker 10: In terms of the flushing, is that pretty simple to do,
- 38:46Speaker 10: or do you have to kind of talk yourself through that?
- 38:47Speaker 3: How did you go back out there with confidence for that?
- 38:51Speaker 11: I understand that's the game of football, whether it's a
- 38:53Speaker 11: good or bad play. I know the next play is
- 38:54Speaker 11: the most important play, so I just told myself that.
- 38:59Speaker 3: The goal line situations as an offense, what do you
- 39:01Speaker 3: guys need to improve there?
- 39:04Speaker 11: Another mindset thing. We just got to understand that once
- 39:06Speaker 11: we get in there, we just got to get.
- 39:08Speaker 3: It across the line. You haven't been with this team.
- 39:14Speaker 3: They haven't lost since last December. What do you notice
- 39:16Speaker 3: about them now versus after the two wins you were
- 39:19Speaker 3: there for? Is there any change or the same? The approach,
- 39:22Speaker 3: the messaging from the coaches, the whole postscript to this
- 39:25Speaker 3: compared to the first two games?
- 39:27Speaker 11: Uh no no our culture stays the same throughout the
- 39:30Speaker 11: season nothing changes it's just things happen this game that
- 39:33Speaker 11: we didn't want to go our way um just got
- 39:35Speaker 11: to respond better.
- 39:38Speaker 7: Thank you sir.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Jadarian Price in the locker room yesterday in Landover, Maryland
- 39:45Speaker 3: after the Seahawks 33-31 loss. It struck me just listening
- 39:48Speaker 3: to that now. I didn't notice it before. He sounds
- 39:50Speaker 3: like Doug Baldwin.
- 39:52Speaker 2: He sounds exactly like Doug.
- 39:54Speaker 3: I was just, when we were, I was like, wait
- 39:57Speaker 3: a minute. Are we playing a Doug Baldwin redo from a,
- 40:00Speaker 3: he kind of speaks in a very lower tone. And
- 40:03Speaker 3: of course the locker room, as you could tell, was
- 40:05Speaker 3: quieter than it's been since last November. It's usually blaring bass.
- 40:08Speaker 3: You can't even hear it. But that was Price yesterday.
- 40:11Speaker 3: So now what? Well, after the game, Mike McDonald said
- 40:15Speaker 3: that was a calming time to calm things down when
- 40:20Speaker 3: he took him out of the game. He came in
- 40:22Speaker 3: for two more plays in the first half, both pass plays.
- 40:25Speaker 3: And then he got a pass thrown his way to
- 40:27Speaker 3: start the second half. But no doubt, Price was a
- 40:31Speaker 3: reduced figure after his fumble. And the run game, they
- 40:34Speaker 3: decided to go away from the run after he fumbled.
- 40:37Speaker 3: And you cannot, the Seahawks cannot win throwing 45 times
- 40:42Speaker 3: and rushing for 18 times for only 44, 45 yards,
- 40:45Speaker 3: 44 a total. You know what else, Jessamyn? They missed
- 40:49Speaker 3: Anthony Bradford yesterday, the right guard. The Seahawks ran eight
- 40:53Speaker 3: times to the right side yesterday for a grand total
- 40:56Speaker 3: of minus one yard.
- 40:58Speaker 2: That is not great.
- 41:00Speaker 3: That's almost unbelievable.
- 41:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 41:03Speaker 3: Abe Lucas struggled without– they did again the– duo of
- 41:08Speaker 3: alternating between Christian Haynes, who started, and rookie Bo Stevens.
- 41:13Speaker 3: But my, how has it changed in a year? Anthony Bradford,
- 41:16Speaker 3: everyone's whipping post in the Pacific Northwest. People are now
- 41:19Speaker 3: longing for him to come back. He's on the injured
- 41:21Speaker 3: reserve list. He won't be back for a couple more games.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Hey, we do have some breaking news coming right now
- 41:27Speaker 2: from the Mariners, Greg. Seattle Mariners president of baseball operations,
- 41:31Speaker 2: Jerry DiPoto, and general manager Justin Hollander announced that bench
- 41:35Speaker 2: coach Maniakta, infield coach Perry Hill, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer,
- 41:40Speaker 2: and first base coach Eric Young Jr. will not return
- 41:44Speaker 2: to the Mariners coaching staff in 2027.
- 41:48Speaker 3: Thank you for that. Well, that takes Maniakta out of
- 41:50Speaker 3: the equation.
- 41:51Speaker 2: That is.
- 41:54Speaker 2: What we will hear more about at one o'clock. And
- 41:57Speaker 2: that is just some breaking news. I didn't mean to
- 42:00Speaker 2: interrupt a Seahawks conversation, but that is important for all
- 42:03Speaker 2: of us to make sure that we get out there
- 42:06Speaker 2: immediately and we can react more with Gary Hill coming up.
- 42:10Speaker 3: So they're cleaning house as you expect they would. If
- 42:12Speaker 3: you change a field manager, he's going to bring in
- 42:14Speaker 3: his own guys, who those own guys will be. We'll
- 42:17Speaker 3: find out the pitching coach though. In the pitching side,
- 42:20Speaker 3: the pitching strategy guy, they're under two-year contracts, I understand.
- 42:23Speaker 3: So they apparently are returning. Pete Woodworth is going to
- 42:26Speaker 3: return as the pitching coach. But everybody else is gone.
- 42:29Speaker 3: The hitting side.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Edgar was not mentioned. Edgar was not mentioned.
- 42:35Speaker 12: But he was more of an emeritus.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Correct.
- 42:37Speaker 3: We'll see if he wants to come back.
- 42:38Speaker 2: But he was considered a part of the staff.
- 42:42Speaker 3: Up next, we'll talk more Mariners. Gary Hill Jr., We
- 42:46Speaker 3: met Brenner's broadcaster on a very emotional day at the
- 42:48Speaker 3: yard yesterday, including with his great friend Rick Riz on
- 42:50Speaker 3: his final call after 41 years. 49451 on the Coma
- 42:54Speaker 3: Dodge text line at 1130. We'll read back your thoughts
- 42:58Speaker 3: on how the Seahawks handled Jadarian Price yesterday. Tough love.
- 43:01Speaker 3: Good for it. It was for the long haul. It
- 43:03Speaker 3: wasn't for yesterday's game, but it might have cost him
- 43:05Speaker 3: the win. We'll read back your text at 1130. 1135
- 43:08Speaker 3: Factor Fiction, your chance to win $ 1, 000. The latest one
- 43:11Speaker 3: from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. All that's coming
- 43:14Speaker 3: up from New York on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJRFM
- 43:25Speaker 1: sports headlines.
- 43:27Speaker 3: Gary Hill Jr., Mariners broadcaster, going to join us right
- 43:29Speaker 3: after headlines. Brought to you by Frostbrook Coors Light. As
- 43:31Speaker 3: cold as the Rockies one day after the Mariners announced
- 43:34Speaker 3: Dan Wilson is out as manager. Mariners President of Baseball
- 43:37Speaker 3: Operations Jerry DiPoto and General Manager Justin Hollander announced a
- 43:40Speaker 3: few minutes ago that bench coach Manny Acta, infield coach
- 43:43Speaker 3: Perry Hill, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, first base coach Eric
- 43:47Speaker 3: Young Jr. all will not return to the Mariners coaching
- 43:50Speaker 3: staff in 2027. Seahawks lost for the first time in
- 43:53Speaker 3: 10 months, 33-31 at previously winless Washington. In rainy suburban D.C.,
- 43:59Speaker 3: we said all week the only way they'd lose is
- 44:00Speaker 3: if they turned the ball over, and the Seahawks did
- 44:02Speaker 3: that three times. Two interceptions by Sam Darnall, one for
- 44:05Speaker 3: the clinching pick six with four and a half minutes left.
- 44:07Speaker 3: Tadarian Price lost the fumble for the second time in
- 44:10Speaker 3: as many games, then the rookie got benched. Seahawks' three
- 44:14Speaker 3: turnovers gave the Commanders 21 of their 33 points. Seahawks
- 44:17Speaker 3: now return home. They play the winless Chargers and the
- 44:19Speaker 3: unbeaten 49ers on the next two Sundays at Lumen Field.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Week three of the NFL saw 12 one-score games, most
- 44:25Speaker 3: ever on one Sunday. 49ers now 3-0 by outscoring Arizona 36-30.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Cardinals are 1-2. The Rams blew a 16-0 lead last night,
- 44:35Speaker 3: lost at Denver 30-26 to fall to 1-2. The Chargers
- 44:38Speaker 3: lost again at Buffalo, and they're coming to Seattle on Sunday.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Clint Kuviak's Raiders are 3-0. They won at New Orleans tonight.
- 44:44Speaker 3: The 2-0 Eagles are at the 1-1 Bears. 5-15 kickoff
- 44:47Speaker 3: from Chicago right here on 93.3 KGRFM. This morning's NFL news.
- 44:51Speaker 3: The Vikings are trading quarterback J.J. McCarthy to the New
- 44:54Speaker 3: York Giants, according to NFL Network.
- 44:57Speaker 2: J.D.
- 44:57Speaker 3: McCarthy, the reason that Sam Darnold is in Seattle and
- 44:59Speaker 3: not Minnesota.
- 45:00Speaker 7: J.D.
- 45:01Speaker 3: McCarthy now going to the Giants. Washington Huskies got pounded
- 45:04Speaker 3: physically to Big Ten's middle tier, Minnesota. Lost to the
- 45:07Speaker 3: Gophers 27-24 at Husky Stadium. UW now 3-1, heading to
- 45:11Speaker 3: USC on Saturday. Kraken lost their final preseason game at Vancouver,
- 45:15Speaker 3: 4-3 to the Kraken's opener Thursday at Calgary, right here
- 45:19Speaker 3: on 93.3 KJFM, your home for the Kraken. The Sounders
- 45:23Speaker 3: beat Minnesota in 3-1, second straight win for the Sounders.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Suddenly they've gone from 13th and out of the MLS
- 45:28Speaker 3: playoff bracket to 8th in the Western Conference and in
- 45:31Speaker 3: the playoff derby as of now. Big emotional day yesterday
- 45:35Speaker 3: at the Yard in Soto. The Mariners finishing a very underwhelming,
- 45:39Speaker 3: most disappointing season in franchise history by winning 7-3 yesterday
- 45:44Speaker 3: over the Angels. They finished 10 games under.
- 45:47Speaker 7: 500.
- 45:47Speaker 3: Rick Riz's final broadcast after 41 years in the booth.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Colin Mariner Games, and the man that's been next to
- 45:53Speaker 3: him for the last couple years, the man that was
- 45:55Speaker 3: right next to him yesterday, the man who's been on
- 45:57Speaker 3: the road and home for him for years, Gary Hill Jr.,
- 46:00Speaker 3: Mariner's broadcaster. He joins us live on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Good morning, Gary, and I hope you've had a chance
- 46:06Speaker 3: to exhale from what had to have been an extraordinarily
- 46:09Speaker 3: emotional day yesterday. Yeah, it really was.
- 46:13Speaker 4: Thanks for having me. Yeah, it was an emotional day,
- 46:16Speaker 4: an emotional weekend, and I still feel like I'm in
- 46:19Speaker 4: recovery and sorting through all the feelings that were yesterday, man,
- 46:23Speaker 4: it was quite a day. That's for sure.
- 46:26Speaker 3: Can you put us in, and you may, you will
- 46:28Speaker 3: have to be better with words than I am, but
- 46:30Speaker 3: you're paid to talk for a living very well. Can
- 46:33Speaker 3: you put it, can you put into words what yesterday
- 46:37Speaker 3: was like for you to sit there and be a
- 46:39Speaker 3: side Rick Riz throughout, as you said, the weekend and
- 46:43Speaker 3: the broadcast itself. And again, Knowing and I'm guessing you
- 46:47Speaker 3: either had an inkling or knew something was coming with
- 46:50Speaker 3: Dan Wilson. And let's face it, a Mariners broadcast team
- 46:54Speaker 3: baseball broadcaster gets close to the manager, sees him, travels
- 46:57Speaker 3: with him, eats with him, stays with him from February
- 47:00Speaker 3: to October. Just can you just describe your personal feelings
- 47:05Speaker 3: of witnessing all of that yesterday in one day?
- 47:08Speaker 4: Yeah, honestly, there were a lot of emotions to sort through.
- 47:11Speaker 4: First of all, with Rick, who was the center of attention, obviously,
- 47:15Speaker 4: in our radio booth for obvious reasons. And for me,
- 47:18Speaker 4: you know, a Tacoma kid, I grew up listening to
- 47:22Speaker 4: Dave and Rick on my little clock radio next to
- 47:26Speaker 4: my bed, listening to Mariners baseball every single night, falling asleep.
- 47:29Speaker 4: And it's really them that sparked this for me. They
- 47:33Speaker 4: changed my life, literally. They're the ones, when I listen
- 47:37Speaker 4: to It's like, that is what I want to do.
- 47:40Speaker 4: I want to be the Mariners' play-by-play guy. And I've
- 47:45Speaker 4: been working towards that my entire life since. And so
- 47:50Speaker 4: to be next to Rick, not only yesterday, but during
- 47:53Speaker 4: the course of this entire season, it's been surreal. Because
- 47:56Speaker 4: I'm like everyone else. Because he has been there, game in,
- 48:02Speaker 4: game out. month after month, year after year. And you
- 48:06Speaker 4: just think about where you were in life when you
- 48:10Speaker 4: started listening to Rick and where you are now. I mean,
- 48:13Speaker 4: for me, it was elementary school. And here I am,
- 48:16Speaker 4: you know, next to him all these years later. I'm married,
- 48:18Speaker 4: a couple of kids. You know, my life has changed
- 48:21Speaker 4: in so many ways. And I know everyone has those
- 48:23Speaker 4: similar stories. So it was an emotional day from that aspect.
- 48:27Speaker 4: And I have all year, and this has been, I think,
- 48:31Speaker 4: the greatest part of the season for me, all season
- 48:34Speaker 4: just watching everyone walk up to Rick and share their
- 48:37Speaker 4: stories with him. And everyone has very personal stories about
- 48:42Speaker 4: a moment or about being with a loved one, or,
- 48:45Speaker 4: you know, I met you this time, just running you
- 48:48Speaker 4: into the grocery store or whatever. And everyone has these
- 48:52Speaker 4: stories about the impact he has made on them during
- 48:55Speaker 4: the course of the season and are during the course
- 48:57Speaker 4: of their lives. And, it just, it adds up over
- 49:01Speaker 4: time and it really has made an impact on me
- 49:03Speaker 4: this year. Just how many lives he has impacted just
- 49:08Speaker 4: by being there, our friend, right? Every single year, our
- 49:13Speaker 4: summer friend.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Our companion.
- 49:15Speaker 4: So there was, that was the backdrop of everything. And then,
- 49:18Speaker 4: you know, the news of Dan Wilson, who is a
- 49:22Speaker 4: wonderful human being, and he's done so much for the Mariners.
- 49:27Speaker 4: And at the end of the day, it was a
- 49:30Speaker 4: really disappointing season, right? We all had extremely high expectations,
- 49:35Speaker 4: all of us, fans, broadcasters, front office players, coaching staff,
- 49:41Speaker 4: you know, we, we heard world series talked about going
- 49:45Speaker 4: into the season and those expectations weren't met. And that's
- 49:48Speaker 4: the reality when, you know, when you look at a
- 49:51Speaker 4: record and at the end of the day, you know,
- 49:54Speaker 4: that onus usually falls on the manager. So it's unfortunate
- 49:58Speaker 4: because Dan Wilson is, he is such a wonderful person,
- 50:02Speaker 4: but that was the backdrop of the whole day too.
- 50:04Speaker 4: It was a day where, that was just supposed to
- 50:07Speaker 4: be the start of the next journey, right? The last
- 50:09Speaker 4: game of the season. And then the playoffs are supposed
- 50:11Speaker 4: to start tomorrow. And that wasn't the case. That was
- 50:13Speaker 4: the end of the season. So I don't know. I
- 50:15Speaker 4: still feel like I'm sorting through everything that happened yesterday.
- 50:18Speaker 4: There was emotions all over the place, good and bad,
- 50:23Speaker 4: just with everything that happened, not only yesterday, but the
- 50:26Speaker 4: course of the entire season.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Well, I'm going to get back to Rick Riz, and
- 50:30Speaker 3: I'm going to ask you what your favorite moment of
- 50:33Speaker 3: the year is. On or off, in or out of
- 50:35Speaker 3: the broadcast booth it was with Rick Grays. But let's
- 50:37Speaker 3: get back to Dan Wilson real quick. What did you
- 50:40Speaker 3: notice about how this season wore on him? The body
- 50:43Speaker 3: language we saw watching on television or when I was
- 50:46Speaker 3: out at the yard sitting behind third base and looking
- 50:49Speaker 3: into the Mariners' dugout, it looked to be a personal
- 50:52Speaker 3: toll to him. Did you notice anything about how this
- 50:56Speaker 3: failure's accumulated and this lack of accountability that we hear
- 51:01Speaker 3: that the players have been talking about for the last week?
- 51:03Speaker 3: Did Dan Wilson himself talked about as a factor in
- 51:06Speaker 3: this year's team. How much did you think Wilson wore
- 51:10Speaker 3: that and how much this season went south?
- 51:14Speaker 4: I think he wore the whole season. You have to
- 51:18Speaker 4: know that Dan Wilson loves the Mariners and he cares
- 51:23Speaker 4: deeply for the Mariners. Nobody wanted to get the Mariners
- 51:28Speaker 4: to the World Series more than Dan Wilson. What you
- 51:32Speaker 4: saw was the effects of that wasn't happening, right? They
- 51:36Speaker 4: weren't playing up to expectations. And what you saw is
- 51:40Speaker 4: because he cares. That's the thing. And so, and I
- 51:45Speaker 4: think that's the most frustrating part when you look at
- 51:47Speaker 4: how this season developed because of the expectations and they
- 51:51Speaker 4: weren't met. And I think that's what you saw. I
- 51:54Speaker 4: think that was it, is he cares. He wanted to
- 51:56Speaker 4: get them to the next level, you know, past the
- 51:58Speaker 4: point where they were the year before. Because it did
- 52:02Speaker 4: feel like, when last year ended, as heartbreaking as it was,
- 52:08Speaker 4: it did feel like, okay, you're bringing nearly everybody back.
- 52:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 52:13Speaker 4: Make a run at this next year. I mean, you
- 52:15Speaker 4: never know what happens in the playoffs, right? In a
- 52:18Speaker 4: three-game series, five-game series, whatever.
- 52:20Speaker 3: But it felt like a beginning, right? It felt like
- 52:23Speaker 3: a beginning, did it not? It did.
- 52:25Speaker 4: And it did feel like a beginning. And for me,
- 52:28Speaker 4: when I look at this scenario, the most frustrating part,
- 52:33Speaker 4: it's not like So many of the West won 95
- 52:36Speaker 4: games and ran away.
- 52:37Speaker 3: It was a weak West.
- 52:38Speaker 4: It was not a good division. And I, the American
- 52:42Speaker 4: league's wide open, wide open. And that's the most frustrating
- 52:46Speaker 4: part because it was all there for the Mariners this year.
- 52:50Speaker 4: And they just, it didn't happen.
- 52:54Speaker 3: Gary Hill, Jr. Mariners broadcaster joining us on the beacon
- 52:56Speaker 3: plumbing hotline. You got to have a great Rick Riz story.
- 52:59Speaker 3: Your favorite one to tell us. him or your relationship
- 53:03Speaker 3: with or something maybe it was in an airport or
- 53:05Speaker 3: a hotel or a restaurant or what have you but
- 53:09Speaker 3: i'm gonna pin you down and ask what your favorite
- 53:11Speaker 3: memory of rick riz favorite moment was you know.
- 53:15Speaker 4: This is a great question there's so many but you
- 53:18Speaker 4: know what really stood out to me it was the
- 53:21Speaker 4: first day of spring training after rick had made the
- 53:24Speaker 4: announcement this would be his last year And our broadcast
- 53:29Speaker 4: booth is low, so fans can just kind of walk
- 53:32Speaker 4: up to our broadcast booth and kind of poke their
- 53:34Speaker 4: head in. And it was the first day, our first game,
- 53:38Speaker 4: and we get done with the game, and just all
- 53:41Speaker 4: of a sudden I look down, and people are lining
- 53:44Speaker 4: up at our window and lining up all the way
- 53:47Speaker 4: back to the back aisleway, right? This line is getting
- 53:50Speaker 4: longer and longer. And it was just people walking up
- 53:54Speaker 4: to our booths, wanting to just say hi to Rick,
- 53:58Speaker 4: say thank you to Rick, maybe get a quick picture,
- 54:01Speaker 4: an autograph ball, whatever.
- 54:03Speaker 3: But all these people.
- 54:04Speaker 4: Were lined up and I will never forget it because
- 54:08Speaker 4: to me, it's just symbolic of everything that happened during
- 54:11Speaker 4: the course of the season, everywhere he went, everyone he
- 54:15Speaker 4: ran into. It was just, thank you. And I just,
- 54:19Speaker 4: I just so appreciate that. I love Mariner fans. I
- 54:22Speaker 4: think Mariner fans are the greatest in baseball and I,
- 54:25Speaker 4: To me, it was just so heartwarming from that very
- 54:28Speaker 4: first day to just see that. And it just kept
- 54:32Speaker 4: occurring during the course of the year, but those are
- 54:34Speaker 4: moments I'll never forget.
- 54:35Speaker 3: Gary, I'm going to put you on the spot. There
- 54:39Speaker 3: are a lot of Mariner fans and listeners, such as myself,
- 54:42Speaker 3: who would love for you to be the number one guy.
- 54:44Speaker 3: I don't want to get you in trouble with your
- 54:46Speaker 3: current number, but is that something? I know you said
- 54:49Speaker 3: you're a Tacoma guy, and you wanted your professional career,
- 54:52Speaker 3: your whole life to be a Mariner's broadcaster. Is that
- 54:55Speaker 3: in the cards? I'm sure they'll have an interview process,
- 55:00Speaker 3: but are you staying with the club? Will you be,
- 55:02Speaker 3: and are you planning on maybe being the number one
- 55:06Speaker 3: guy or am I too premature? Tell me to pipe down.
- 55:11Speaker 4: No, I appreciate the question. I will, I will only say,
- 55:14Speaker 4: I won't say number one, anything like that. That's, that's for,
- 55:19Speaker 4: this is still Rick's time to celebrate. So we'll, We'll
- 55:23Speaker 4: talk about that more in the off season, but I
- 55:25Speaker 4: will be with the Mariners. I will be on the
- 55:27Speaker 4: broadcast team. And for me, I take this, I feel
- 55:34Speaker 4: the weight of the history of Mariners broadcasts on the radio.
- 55:39Speaker 4: And it started with Dave Niehaus all those years ago
- 55:41Speaker 4: and handed to Rick Riz after that. And this season
- 55:44Speaker 4: upcoming is going to be the first time where we
- 55:48Speaker 4: won't have Rick and or Dave on the radio. Like
- 55:52Speaker 4: it really is an end of an era. And that's
- 55:54Speaker 4: something that I feel and I take a lot of
- 55:58Speaker 4: responsibility for. And so moving forward, I can't be Dave.
- 56:02Speaker 4: I can't be Rick. I'm just going to be me.
- 56:06Speaker 4: And just know, Mariner fans, that I love you so much.
- 56:13Speaker 4: I love talking Mariners baseball with you every day. And
- 56:17Speaker 4: there is no one that cares more about our radio
- 56:20Speaker 4: broadcasts and Mariners fans when they take the air than
- 56:24Speaker 4: I do. And so I don't know what it will
- 56:27Speaker 4: look like next year or who will be with me
- 56:29Speaker 4: or that sort of thing. So those are details to
- 56:31Speaker 4: figure out, but I will be a part of it.
- 56:34Speaker 4: And I'm, I'm just thrilled, you know, because this is,
- 56:39Speaker 4: this was a passion that was sparked when I was
- 56:41Speaker 4: a little kid. I just can't remember wanting to do
- 56:43Speaker 4: anything else. You know, next to Rick and I'm here
- 56:47Speaker 4: every day.
- 56:47Speaker 12: It's, It's wild.
- 56:49Speaker 4: I'm living out the dream.
- 56:50Speaker 3: I really am. That's awesome. Gary, you answered that far
- 56:55Speaker 3: more eloquently than I asked it. And I appreciate how
- 56:58Speaker 3: you said it and deferring to Rick as well. But
- 57:02Speaker 3: that's great to hear that you'll be back. You do
- 57:04Speaker 3: a hell of a job with what you do. We
- 57:05Speaker 3: hear the care and the passion in what you do.
- 57:07Speaker 3: And thank you. And thanks for always joining us when
- 57:09Speaker 3: we call you on no notice. And thanks for describing
- 57:11Speaker 3: what had to be a really emotional swinging day yesterday
- 57:14Speaker 3: for you. Thank you very much, Gary O.
- 57:16Speaker 7: Jr.
- 57:17Speaker 3: Anytime.
- 57:18Speaker 4: I always appreciate the chats and hopefully we'll connect in
- 57:20Speaker 4: the off season a few times. Appreciate it.
- 57:22Speaker 3: Yes, sir. Anytime. Gary Hill Jr., the Mariners broadcaster on
- 57:26Speaker 3: a very unique day in team history yesterday, the end
- 57:29Speaker 3: of an era of 41 years of Rick Risby and
- 57:31Speaker 3: the Mariners broadcaster on top of a hall of famer,
- 57:36Speaker 3: a team hall of famer, Dan Wilson, let go as
- 57:39Speaker 3: manager will not be back in 2027 and just announced
- 57:42Speaker 3: in the last half hour, Most of his coaching staff
- 57:45Speaker 3: not returning either. Manny Acta, Kevin Seitzer, the hitting coach,
- 57:48Speaker 3: not coming back. Eric Young Jr., the first, but not
- 57:51Speaker 3: coming back. Only pitching coach Pete Woodworth and that side
- 57:54Speaker 3: of the coaching staff confirmed as a second year of
- 57:58Speaker 3: a contract for next year that looks like will be
- 58:01Speaker 3: coming back. Of course, the new manager will get to
- 58:02Speaker 3: decide that on who's coming back. 49451, your reaction to
- 58:08Speaker 3: all of this, the news swirling about the Mariners, and
- 58:10Speaker 3: now just the news coming out that The coaching staff
- 58:13Speaker 3: will leave, too. That's kind of not a surprise, right?
- 58:16Speaker 3: Because the new manager is going to bring in his
- 58:17Speaker 3: own guys anyway.
- 58:19Speaker 2: It's just not the regular tread that we've seen, though.
- 58:24Speaker 2: You know, there is a lot of retention of bench
- 58:26Speaker 2: coaches sometimes. I mean, it's not just like college football where, okay,
- 58:30Speaker 2: this guy's bringing all his guys. I mean, it's not
- 58:33Speaker 2: the most shocking thing, but do they have someone in mind?
- 58:36Speaker 2: Why would they make that announcement right now? That's my question.
- 58:41Speaker 2: Do they already have someone tapped?
- 58:44Speaker 3: Or to give those guys a chance to find another job.
- 58:46Speaker 2: That's fair. That's fair.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:49Speaker 3: I mean, don't hang on to November if other staffs
- 58:51Speaker 3: are getting filled up by new managers as well. So
- 58:54Speaker 3: that also is in play. Jerry DiPoto will talk at
- 58:57Speaker 3: one o'clock in what, 40 minutes time? No, actually an
- 59:01Speaker 3: hour and 40 minutes time. Live from Seattle, we will
- 59:04Speaker 3: carry that press conference live. The Mariners president of baseball
- 59:07Speaker 3: operations answering questions from the media. I'd be interested to
- 59:11Speaker 3: hear if I'm in New York or else I'd be
- 59:13Speaker 3: there to ask questions such as, what are you looking
- 59:16Speaker 3: for next? What's the mandate? What has ownership told you?
- 59:19Speaker 3: What is your own mandate for finding a new manager?
- 59:21Speaker 3: Does he have to have managerial experience, which the two
- 59:24Speaker 3: managers he has hired in 11 years have not? Scott's service, yes,
- 59:28Speaker 3: was excellent. on major league staffs and in dugouts, but
- 59:30Speaker 3: never was a manager. And of course, Dan Wilson had
- 59:33Speaker 3: never had any experience coaching or managing at any level
- 59:37Speaker 3: when he replaced Scott service and then coached two full
- 59:39Speaker 3: seat managed two full seasons is now a prerequisite for
- 59:43Speaker 3: the franchise to have someone with experience. Will they continue
- 59:46Speaker 3: to play iPad baseball? Will they continue to be analytics
- 59:49Speaker 3: driven as much as they were to a fault? Those
- 59:52Speaker 3: are the questions I would have for, Jerry DiPoto, not
- 59:56Speaker 3: sure he'd answer them, but I think that's a question
- 59:58Speaker 3: fans want to know. 49451, what would you ask if
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: you were there? Jessamyn, you're going to be there. I
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: will be there.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: I will be there. I kind of want to know
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: what the identity of the team was and how you
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: would reflect on it from last year. But I think
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: everything that you are saying will be asked.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: I hope so. Maybe not answered.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: I will give way. Well, Jerry is very good. at
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: not answering questions. We've heard that plenty of times, but
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: I would want to know what identity he wants for
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: this team moving forward and how he would define what
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: we've already seen.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: And let me just say, hats off to Gary Hill Jr.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: Since I had the show with Chris Kidd back in 2024,
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: he would pick up the phone on a moment's notice,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: sometimes on road trips, and Detroit is on a bus,
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: and he always says yes. Always. Last night, Late last
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: night after a hugely emotional day, Jessamyn texts him at
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: whatever time it was, sure, I'll come on. And you
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: can hear in his voice, the Tacoma guy, like you said,
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: you can hear in his voice how much he cares
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: and how much he wants to be a part of
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: the Mariners' success and how much he wants to describe
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: it for you. I hope he gets the number one spot.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: I know they'll probably do a national search or whatever.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: Give Gary Hill Jr. the job, man. That guy– He's there.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: He works hard.
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: He cares. He knows his stuff.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: And he clearly knows his stuff because I've known him
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: since he was engineering those broadcasts. And he has become
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: a voice that people know. And I think that when
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: you bring a new voice in, it's a little more jarring,
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: but people do know Gary Hill. And I think it
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: would be great to have him in that spot.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Next, you're a part of the show. You're a part
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: of the big goings-on in Seattle sports, the benching of
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Jadarian Price, the Seahawks' first loss in 10 games. Sam
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: Darnold throwing two interceptions. Should he have played? People on
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: the text line are saying Drew Locke should have started
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: yesterday to give Sam Darnold another week off. And now
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: the managerial change for the Mariners after a most disappointing
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: season in franchise history. A Jerry DiPoto press conference at
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: 1 o'clock. We'll carry it live here on KJR. But
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: up next, you'll be a part of the show with
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: your talkbacks on the iHeartRadio app or our website, 933KJR. com.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: And on the Tacoma Dodge text line, 49451 at 1135.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Factor fiction, your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: Eagle Casino Resort. And for us at 1145, all that
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: coming up from New York on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:02:24Speaker 13: The fact that Jerry is still here is very upsetting.
- 1:02:28Speaker 13: People say that Dan had autonomy on the field. There
- 1:02:32Speaker 13: was an article, I believe, by Ryan Divish Saturday that
- 1:02:36Speaker 13: confirmed that. But it also said at the beginning of
- 1:02:38Speaker 13: the season, Jerry had a meeting with Dan, pretty much
- 1:02:43Speaker 13: telling him the team's philosophy and data and analytics. So
- 1:02:47Speaker 13: if your boss gives you autonomy, you're still going to
- 1:02:49Speaker 13: follow his direction.
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: Jerry DiPoto needs to... but out from the day-to-day operation,
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: in-game operation of the Mariners. Leave it up to the manager.
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: That's why you hire them.
- 1:03:07Speaker 14: I think the problem is that the Mariners don't have
- 1:03:10Speaker 14: any competition from any other ball clubs to really drive
- 1:03:15Speaker 14: them to put a quality product out there. That was
- 1:03:18Speaker 14: the problem with the Seahawks for a while. It was
- 1:03:21Speaker 14: never the problem for the Sonics because we had the Trailblazers.
- 1:03:25Speaker 14: But the Mariners, they don't seemingly care because they're going
- 1:03:28Speaker 14: to make money regardless because they're the only game in
- 1:03:33Speaker 14: this corner of the country.
- 1:03:36Speaker 15: Hey, Dan Wilson here. You know, we had a tough
- 1:03:39Speaker 15: one this year, and I spoke with Jerry about it,
- 1:03:42Speaker 15: you know, and Uh, I decided that he should probably
- 1:03:47Speaker 15: step down and he decided that I should step down,
- 1:03:50Speaker 15: you know, so I'm going to go ahead and step
- 1:03:51Speaker 15: down as, as we decide. He decided, you know, uh,
- 1:03:55Speaker 15: that was a tough one, uh, but we're going to
- 1:03:57Speaker 15: keep going. Uh, you know, the guys are going to
- 1:03:59Speaker 15: keep fighting.
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: Starts at the top. The ownership group needs to be fired.
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: Jerry DePono needs to be fired. Dan Wilson was a scapegoat.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: He probably should have never been hired. The poor guy
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: has done so much for this organization, and then to
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: let him go the way he did, I just feel
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: like it's just everybody dumping on him. He's not the problem.
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: The problem's at the top. It's always been at the top.
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: It's been at the top for, I don't know, 20,
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: 30 years now.
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: Hey there, Dan Wilson again.
- 1:04:32Speaker 15: I just want to let you know that I was
- 1:04:34Speaker 15: fired today. I mean, I stepped down today, heard Jerry DePoto,
- 1:04:39Speaker 15: and I quote... I'm doing you a favor. Not really
- 1:04:42Speaker 15: sure what that means. I asked to speak to John Stanton,
- 1:04:45Speaker 15: but was told he was in a meeting with the
- 1:04:47Speaker 15: accountants about profits and that there would be a massive
- 1:04:50Speaker 15: reduction in free hot dogs next year. Not sure what
- 1:04:53Speaker 15: that means either.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Tough one today.
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: Hi guys, special assistant to Jerry DePoto here, checking in
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: with a quick update.
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: Mr.
- 1:05:02Speaker 12: DePoto will speak at 1 p.m.
- 1:05:03Speaker 6: Today, but he will only answer questions that he feels like,
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: and he.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: Will augment the rest.
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: Also, he will really keep.
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: Touch with his iPad and only be answering questions off
- 1:05:13Speaker 6: his iPad, as that's how he monitors life, this baseball team,
- 1:05:17Speaker 6: how our analytics work, and how everything else with the
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: organization runs. Feel free to ask as many questions as
- 1:05:23Speaker 6: you want, but he'll only answer the ones he's prepared for.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: Well, banner day for the Talkbacks.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that was Jessamyn's kind of day for the Talkbacks.
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: There were a lot, and they were all on one subject, Greg.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: The Seahawks lost their first game of the season yesterday,
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: and we are only talking about the Mariners' moves.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: There are some on the Talkback, 49451, talking about the
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: Seahawks as well. 253, Greg, do you really think that
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: missing Bradford was the reason why the Seahawks were defeated?
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: No.
- 1:05:54Speaker 14: No.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Does Bradford play defense? No. Special teams in the Seahawks
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: scored how many points? No, I didn't say it was
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: the reason they lost. I said they felt it in
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: the run game. Eight times to run to the right side,
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: minus one yards. It was part of the reason they
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: got away from the run and just abandoned it. Brian
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: Fleury's game plan was not to throw 45 times and
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: rush 18. But they didn't run effectively, and the fumble
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: of Jadarian Price changed the game plan. It changed the
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: running game, and part of the game plan of running
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: the ball suffered. 18 carries, 44 yards, suffered because their
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: starting right guard wasn't available. That was my point about that. But, no,
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: I don't think– I don't think that Bradford was the
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: reason that they lost. A lot of people on the
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: text line saying hi to Stephen Vogt, who makes his
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: offseason home in Tumwater. He and his wife, Alyssa– And
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: their three children live in Tumwater, Olympia area in the offseason.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: But Steven Vogt is going to the playoffs with the
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: Cleveland Guardians. He's got the second seed in the American League.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: He's got a job. Why would he leave to become
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: the Mariners manager just because he has a home out here?
- 1:06:57Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: He's doing okay in Cleveland. I don't know why he
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: would ever leave, but I don't see that.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: I think that's just wishful thinking.
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: Honestly, Keith253, honestly, what are the chances the Mariners bring
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: in a big-name manager? I highly doubt it. DePoto wants
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: a yes, man. That may be true. Hey, you want $ 1, 000?
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: Now's your chance to win it from the Lucky Loose
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: Casino and Hotel right now. We're set to go. Glad
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: you're with us.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly thousand bucks and the
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: $ 10, 000 grand prize. It's Fact or Fiction. Proudly presented by
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every day feels lucky.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: Are you surprised?
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: Nope.
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: Take a wild guess where I'm going. Of every heart
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: and gray. And when the team is fighting for the
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: black and gray and gold. We're always here with song
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: and cheer. And this is the tale we're told. The
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: Army team. Okay.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Let's make a pick, Greg. The window's opening.
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: Army's at Louisiana Tech Saturday night. Louisiana Tech is one
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: and two. They're at the bottom of the Sunbelt Conference.
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: There are two games against Division I FBS teams. They
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: lost 45-14 to the Lane Kiffins in LSU. Last week
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: they lost at Baylor 36-19. The only win for Louisiana
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: Tech was against Northwestern State, a lower division team. Yeah,
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: they scored 80 points that night, 80-6 against a lower
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: division team. But otherwise, 14 points against LSU, 19 points
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: against Baylor. Now here comes Army. Fresh off a 21-17
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: win at Temple. I'm going to go to the old standby,
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Army and the Unders. Army at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana.
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: 46.5 points is the total. score. I think Army and
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: Louisiana Tech will combine for 46 or fewer points.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: I kind of want to play this right now.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: Hold on.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Greg chooses Army and the Under, folks.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: Soccer. Only Ted Koppel could appreciate the news breaking none
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: of that.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: Army in the Under. The old standby that got everybody
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: money back in 2024 with Chris Kidd and me. Going
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: back to Army in the Under after we took Army
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: in the points and got us wins last week. Army
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: in the Under. If you believe, if you agree, if
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: you want to get on the old standby, text FACT
- 1:09:39Speaker 3: to 49451. Basically, if you want to win.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: $ 1, 000.
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: Text FACT to 49451. If you don't want to win $ 1, 000,
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: text FICTION to 49451. 5-1. Army, Louisiana Tech, under 46.5 points.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: Army's favored by 2.5. I think they're going to win
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: the game outright, but I'm not as sure as I
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: think it's going to be a low-scoring game with Army's
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: 10-minute drives. Army leads the nation in time of possession
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: and in rushing like they always do.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: You mean they're strategic and they're trained to do so?
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Yeah, they have a little bit of trench warfare going
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: on in the field and kind of used to mucking
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: it up. Yep. Army, Louisiana Tech, under 46.5 if you've
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: You've got 12 minutes now, 11 minutes to text in.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: If you agree, text FACT to 49451. If you disagree,
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: text FICTION to 49451 for your chance to win $ 1, 000
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Resort. Ian Furness will
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: have another chance for you to win at 235. Dick Fane,
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: Dave Softy Mahler will have another chance at 335. More
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: Seahawks questions. Keith253 wants to know if it's red alert
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: at running back for the Hawks. No, I think it's
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: yellow caution flag, not red alert. They're going to give
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: the ball to Jadarian Price. They sent the message yesterday,
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: and you heard the kid say, those are my consequences.
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: He got the message.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Oh, he took it. I thought he did a really
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: good job.
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: He said he has to learn to focus more on
- 1:10:59Speaker 3: holding onto the ball, meaning instead of gaining extra yards
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: at the end of runs, he's going to worry about
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: holding onto the ball more. Of course, he should always
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: do that. A couple questions on the text line. Josh
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: Jobe got worked yesterday by– Terry McLaurin. Let's just be honest. McLaurin,
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: 34-year-old wide receiver.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: I'm sorry, but those were precision tosses, Terry. And I
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: thought that JSN and McLaurin looked like identical. They were
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: mirror images of each other because they were both very
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: well covered.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: Yeah, they were. But there were other times, though, that
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: Josh Jones got beat. The touchdown, Job just got turned
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: around and then got out-jumped for it.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: And the penalty, yeah.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: The two penalties on the receivers late in the game,
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: the one on A.J. Finley... There was no helmet contact.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Nah, that one was rough, yeah.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: I don't know. I think the Commander's one on the
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: sideline was against Rashid Shaheed. It was even worse. That ball,
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: he hit him in the chest with his shoulders. He's
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: trying to break the pass up, and they called unnecessary
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: roughness and gave the Seahawks a first down for that.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: Those are two really bad penalties.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: I thought that they let them play the game out
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: a lot yesterday. I thought I saw a lot of contact.
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: Except for those two penalties that ended up giving first
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: downs to each team in the fourth quarter.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: I was like, are we doing make-goods? What is happening?
- 1:12:14Speaker 3: Well, the second one was a make-up call for the
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: first one. The one on A.J. Finley. And that cost
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: the Seahawks a defensive stop. The question about Josh Jogian
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: worked by McLaurin a little bit yesterday. There are two
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: or three messages on the text line, including from the 360.
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: Is Seattle going to bring up Trevon Diggs, or could
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: they lose him to another team? That's an interesting question.
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: Diggs is sitting on the practice squad. The league knows it.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: The league knows the Seahawks have a 2021 All-Pro. Of course,
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: he hasn't played a full season since 2022. But they
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: know that there's an All-Pro sitting on the Mariners practice squad,
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: or the Seahawks practice squad, who's yet– to play and
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: they've been trying to ramp him up to get his
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: feet under him. He hadn't practiced from January to late
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: August when he joined the Seahawks. That's a question I'm
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: probably going to ask Mike McDonald today at his three
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: o'clock press conferences. Is Trevon Diggs ready? And if so,
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: does he become your third corner or do you move
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: him in potentially to challenge Job as a corner? Now
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Job has been good. They gave him an $ 8 million contract.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: They basically chose Job over Rick Warren. and what Wolin
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: signed with the Eagles. But that's a good question because
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: there will be a time that the rest of the
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: league says, this guy should be ready to play. Now
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: I'll take a flyer on him. And the NFL rules
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: allow you to sign a guy off another team's practice squad.
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: And if you put them directly onto your 53 man roster,
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: it's how Cody White's now playing and catching touchdown passes
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: for Clint Kubiak's Raiders off the Seahawks practice. Or in
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: that case, he decided to sign with the Raiders practice
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: squad instead of the Seahawks. But yeah, the rules are
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: that you can, you can take someone and sign someone
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: off of someone else's practice squad onto your active roster.
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: It is an interesting question on where Trevon Diggs, is
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: he ever going to play? Is he now ready after
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: now three games to play again? 360 says, not having
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Julian Love really hurt us. Just one game. We'll come
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: back from it. Appreciate the cool. I absolutely love the show.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: That's cool. Thank you. But yeah, they missed Love in
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: the back. They had two practice squad players starting yesterday.
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: A.J.
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: Finley up from the practice squad signed in the 53
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: a couple weeks ago. And then just this past week,
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: they signed Rodney Thomas to the practice squad, who had
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: been elevated for the first two games and started both
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: because of injuries back in the secondary. But, yeah, Julian
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: Love helps everybody, including the cornerbacks, for sure. Tons of
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: text we can't get to right now about the Mariners.
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: Rod at 206 with the Mariners and made the playoffs,
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: but they fired Dan Wilson in the middle of the season.
- 1:14:38Speaker 3: I say no. They were so broken fundamentally, I don't
- 1:14:41Speaker 3: think it mattered. But, yeah, there's tons more we just
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: didn't get to. We'll try to get to them again later.
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: Thanks a lot for all the text. Appreciate it. And
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: we appreciate the talkbacks as well. Up next, Ian Furness
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: will tell us what he's got going on in his show. Remember,
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: the window closes in about eight minutes now. Army, Louisiana Tech,
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: total point 46.5, under. If you agree, text FAC to 49451.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: If you disagree, text FICTION to 49451. But, yeah, I
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: hear you, 360. On the bright side, Navy lost. Monday
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: was a good day. maybe lost army one.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: There you go. Something happened.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: Squids lost army one. That was a good day on Friday.
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: He ends up next to tell me what he's got
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: going on on 93.3 KJR.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: Now back, the countdown to Monday Night Football with Greg Bell.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Brought to you by Frostbrood Coors Light. Cold as the Rockies.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: On Sports Radio 93.3.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: KJR FM. That's right, Eagles and Bears tonight, 5-15, right
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: here on 93.3 KJR FM, the final game of Week
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: 3 of the NFL season. We've got a minute or
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: two left on our window of fact or fiction from
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Army and Louisiana Tech,
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: total point 46.5. I'm taking Army in the under. I'm
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: taking the under on that. If you agree, text fact
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: to 49451. If you disagree, text fiction to 49451. Leftovers
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: from the text line real quick. Will Jerry DiPoto's press
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: conference at 1 p.m. be televised from the 206? I
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: don't know that. I do know it'll be live here
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: on KJR. at 1 o'clock during Ian Furness' show, who
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: joins us now from the Elliott Bay Studios back in Seattle.
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: Hello from New York, sir.
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: Hello.
- 1:16:30Speaker 12: How are you?
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: I'm well, thank you. Your reaction to this whole weekend,
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: the Seahawks losing because they just handed the ball three
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: times to Washington, the Mariners doing what we knew was
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: going to happen. Do you think it was– whose decision
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: do you think that was?
- 1:16:47Speaker 12: I mean, it was probably mutual.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Really?
- 1:16:52Speaker 12: I mean, I think, but I thought it was an
- 1:16:56Speaker 12: interesting comment he made about another role inside the organization,
- 1:17:00Speaker 12: which he's going to think about. So that would tell
- 1:17:03Speaker 12: me that because they know they, that would tell me
- 1:17:08Speaker 12: he didn't just step down because if he did, you know,
- 1:17:11Speaker 12: then they wouldn't have to pay him.
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:17:14Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: And maybe, and maybe he didn't step down, so they'll
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: still have to pay him.
- 1:17:18Speaker 12: That's the thing, right? So why would you even, you know,
- 1:17:20Speaker 12: like if you're resigning, why would you think about another
- 1:17:23Speaker 12: role inside the organization? Or they would come to you
- 1:17:24Speaker 12: and say, listen, man, this is, I mean, we'll find
- 1:17:27Speaker 12: out at one o'clock, but, um, and yeah, I mean,
- 1:17:31Speaker 12: I know he, he dodged the question yesterday. Dan did, but, uh,
- 1:17:34Speaker 12: and at this point, does it matter?
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: I guess.
- 1:17:36Speaker 12: I mean, really, does it matter at this point? I know,
- 1:17:40Speaker 12: I know, I know people want people's heads on a platter.
- 1:17:42Speaker 12: I get that, but I don't think it matters.
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: How much are you with me that the wrong guy
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: is stepping aside? Or that in addition to the manager,
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: the president of baseball operations needs to leave for the
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: baseball operations to change?
- 1:17:53Speaker 12: I think the hard thing here, Greg, is that we're
- 1:17:55Speaker 12: not hearing from the owner and ownership. The people above
- 1:17:58Speaker 12: Jerry and Justin. Because I don't think what we know
- 1:18:00Speaker 12: is really what Jerry and Justin are dealing with and
- 1:18:05Speaker 12: how much their hands are tied and how invested and
- 1:18:11Speaker 12: how willing to invest in the team. this ownership group is,
- 1:18:15Speaker 12: what the ownership group thinks of the job that Jerry
- 1:18:17Speaker 12: and Justin are doing. I'd love to hear that. What
- 1:18:20Speaker 12: do you think? Like two playoff appearances, one division title
- 1:18:23Speaker 12: in 11 years? What do you think? Is that good enough, John?
- 1:18:27Speaker 12: But we're not going to hear from John. And I
- 1:18:29Speaker 12: want to just let me make this perfectly clear. Because
- 1:18:33Speaker 12: I hear people say, well, we don't hear from the
- 1:18:34Speaker 12: Seahawks owners. No, no, you don't need to. Because during
- 1:18:37Speaker 12: the Paul Allen and Jody Allen tenure, you went to
- 1:18:40Speaker 12: the Super Bowl four times. You won twice. You want
- 1:18:43Speaker 12: more division titles than this team will ever have playoff appearances,
- 1:18:48Speaker 12: the Mariners. I don't need that. to hear from Paul
- 1:18:51Speaker 12: and Jody. I see the investment. I see the decisions.
- 1:18:54Speaker 12: I see when they make a mistake and they fire
- 1:18:57Speaker 12: Jim Moore and have to just pay him to leave
- 1:18:59Speaker 12: after one year. We see all those things. Because no
- 1:19:02Speaker 12: ownership group, no GM, no anybody is perfect. We all
- 1:19:04Speaker 12: know that, right? But I see the accountability. This baseball ownership,
- 1:19:11Speaker 12: I don't. I'm willing to give Jerry and Justin. I
- 1:19:14Speaker 12: just don't know. I don't think any of us know
- 1:19:16Speaker 12: how much their hands are truly tied. I've been around
- 1:19:19Speaker 12: Jerry enough times, talked to him enough times off the record,
- 1:19:21Speaker 12: on the record. He wants to win. He wants to win.
- 1:19:27Speaker 12: Is he doing a good enough job? We don't know
- 1:19:30Speaker 12: because we don't know the seatbelts that are put around him.
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: Well, we know the results, right? He's only won one division.
- 1:19:36Speaker 12: Right, and that's true.
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: And that is true.
- 1:19:38Speaker 12: And that part, Greg, that's probably not defensible, to be
- 1:19:42Speaker 12: honest with you.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: Okay, the Seahawks. I mean, they gave the ball away.
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: What did you think about benching Jadarian Price? Because it
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: was a benching. They brought him back so they didn't
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: lose him completely for the next week or so.
- 1:19:53Speaker 12: Yeah, I kind of thought that would happen after that
- 1:19:57Speaker 12: play because it's two and two weeks. Rain or not,
- 1:20:00Speaker 12: it doesn't matter.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: Two more than Kenneth Walker did in four years here. Yeah.
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: He never lost a film.
- 1:20:05Speaker 12: And there were questions about his hands coming out of college.
- 1:20:10Speaker 12: I didn't love his postgame I heard with you. I
- 1:20:13Speaker 12: didn't love that, I'll be honest with you.
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: Why not?
- 1:20:15Speaker 12: I thought he sounded just, I don't know, immature. Listen,
- 1:20:21Speaker 12: you haven't earned the right to be a three-word answer guy.
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: Okay?
- 1:20:25Speaker 12: You haven't earned that yet.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: He did go to Notre Dame and had all the
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: national spots. You know what we forget?
- 1:20:29Speaker 12: Yeah, but he never started. He never probably got talked
- 1:20:31Speaker 12: to at all. I mean, it was the other guy.

- 1:21:01Speaker 12: what the texts are going to say right now. But
- 1:21:03Speaker 12: that will be highly entertaining. We'll get to all that today.
- 1:21:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
