- 0:08Speaker 2: What's happened? Everybody.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome into this edition of The check O Daily. Andrew
- 0:12Decheco here. You know, this is a little bit of
- 0:14a late podcast, but the Eagles had a private walkthrough today,
- 0:18so there was no practice open to the media. But
- 0:21they will be back on the field Thursday morning at
- 0:25ten am. Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay will be speaking
- 0:29to the media about nine to forty ish.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And I can't wait to get back to practice.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Once you get into a routine, it's very difficult to
- 0:36deviate from that when you get in that flow and
- 0:38you're seeing the team come together and all those things.
- 0:41Speaker 2: But today we'll do something.
- 0:42Speaker 1: A little bit different since there was no practice to
- 0:45really react to or for me to give you some
- 0:47of my observations, and we'll do a little stock up
- 0:49and stock down and I'll have a more comprehensive breakdown
- 0:53of all of this on inside theebirds dot Com on
- 0:56Saturday morning. But you guys are going to get this
- 0:59information first, and I'm not gonna go necessarily with the
- 1:02big names, because I think everyone knows that Sakwon Barkley
- 1:06is a tremendous talent. Everyone knows that Jalen Hurts is
- 1:10a tremendous talent, Jaywen Carter.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And so on.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But I'll give you some stock up for some different players,
- 1:15and I think first and foremost, I'm gonna have to
- 1:18go with right guard Tyler Stein. Now he has had
- 1:22some fits with Moro Jomo, the third year defensive tackle,
- 1:26but listening to offensive line coach and run game coordinator
- 1:30Jeff Stoutland on Monday or.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Tuesday, I don't.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Know, Well, it was day five of Eagles practice. See
- 1:39I'm getting all my days mixed up here, but Jeff
- 1:42Stoutland said that he that Tyler's doing some really good
- 1:45things and he praised Stein as he looks to nail
- 1:49down a starting job. Obviously he's the favorite, and there's
- 1:53really nobody who is pushing him at this time. But
- 1:57I think it's important when you hear something from such
- 1:59a pivotal figure for the Eagles, and he heaped praise
- 2:03on Tyler Steen.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I don't think that that was lip service.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I don't think that that was just that when trying
- 2:08to conjure some sort of confidence for the third year pro.
- 2:12And sometimes I think that really goes back to what
- 2:17we've all been saying on inside the Birds is that
- 2:21sometimes you know, you don't want to get too carried away.
- 2:23You have to be really careful with just reaching certain
- 2:28determinations this early in camp. Right, it's only been five
- 2:31days of practice. The first day of padded practice was yesterday,
- 2:36and there's a lot yet to be determined, and there's
- 2:38a lot that coaches see that we have no way
- 2:42of really knowing. And while it looks sometimes on the
- 2:45surface that Stein was having some trouble with a Jomo,
- 2:48I mean that's apparent, but a Jomo's also begin giving
- 2:51other players trouble. Obviously, it's being highlighted because Tyler Steen
- 2:55is the new face on the Eagles offensive line, but
- 3:00all you need to hear is Jeff Stoutlin and what
- 3:02he had to say, and I think that that indicates
- 3:04that Tyler is headed in the right direction. Another player
- 3:09I want to highlight is running back Will Shipley. So
- 3:12Will Shipley had a drop on day two of Eagles practice,
- 3:15which was uncharacteristic because he's the eagles best and most
- 3:18natural pass receiving running back. But on day five, he
- 3:25caught a flurry of passes. He looked explosive and twitchy
- 3:29in the open field and one of his catches actually
- 3:32was with Johdd Campbell in coverage along the far sideline.
- 3:35He also had a nice run in the red zone
- 3:37that I believe was called back due to a penalty
- 3:40if I'm thinking of the right play. And then he
- 3:42also caught a receiving touchdown from Jayalen Hurts on a
- 3:45Texas route. These are the qualities that I've been talking
- 3:49about all off season about what Will Shipley can bring
- 3:52to the offense. He brings juice, an explosiveness, and just
- 3:56adds a different dimension to the offense that you're not
- 3:59going to find from the.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Other two players.
- 4:01Speaker 1: I think the Eagles have a really diverse backfield that
- 4:03can provide some different things. Obviously Saquon Barkley leads the charge,
- 4:07but in game I think that Will Shipley is a
- 4:10player that you can create some mismatches with, you can
- 4:15get him involved in the receiving game, and he has
- 4:18home run hitting ability. Obviously, things could change if Saquon
- 4:22Barkley were to miss time a game or two, or
- 4:25even closing out games, because that's where aj Dillon, who's
- 4:28also had a nice start to training camp, can fill
- 4:32in as being that between the tackles bruiser who can
- 4:34really salt away a game. I also would have to
- 4:38mention offensively wide receiver Elijah Cooks. That's a player that
- 4:42going into training camp he was probably the furthest down
- 4:45in the pecking order. He also was sidelined for spring
- 4:48practices with an undisclosed injury.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But he's made the most of his opportunities. And when you.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Don't have someone like Devonte Smith practicing for two days
- 4:59and you don't I don't have a player like Danny
- 5:03Gray who has since been waved injured with a finger injury,
- 5:08that has been an uptick in snaps for Cooks. But
- 5:14it's one thing to get those opportunities, but it's another
- 5:17thing to maximize and optimize those reps, and he certainly
- 5:20has done that three consecutive practices.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He's flashed. A few days ago.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It was having a few different catches, including an impressive
- 5:29one to end practice on a developmental period where he
- 5:33caught a deep shot down the sideline and used his
- 5:36frame to soar above the defensive back. Then on day two,
- 5:41he also made an acrobatic leaping reception in one on
- 5:44ones against the Dori Jackson and it was yesterday that
- 5:49he caught. I believe it was a post route for
- 5:51a touchdown during a red zone situation from quarterback Tanner
- 5:54McKee where he got behind and it was tight coverage.
- 5:59Tristan McCollum and linebacker Dallas Gant got both feed in.
- 6:04McCollum was incredulous, insisting that he was out of bounds,
- 6:07but the referee signaled a touchdown. At six foot four,
- 6:12Cooks is a rangey player. He was on the Eagles
- 6:14practice squad for the week leading.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Up to the Divisional Round.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I've outlined before that his role in practice that week
- 6:20was emulating wide receiver Puka Nakua. So that's a player
- 6:23you should be highlighting moving into the preseason. I think
- 6:28he's done a nice job of acquitting himself and really
- 6:32seizing the opportunity. I also have to say stock up
- 6:35for right tackle Darien Kinnard, and the reason being isn't
- 6:39necessarily due to anything tangible that you can see on
- 6:42the field. He's been operating with the second team exclusively.
- 6:46But what I'm seeing is a player who's primarily a
- 6:49right tackle, of course, but he's been transitioning and flip
- 6:52flopping with Matt Pryor at right guard as well, so
- 6:56they've been trading off spots. Matt Pryor has largely been
- 6:58the second team right go and then you're now seeing
- 7:03Canard work in that area as well, with Prior going
- 7:07to right tackle. Look, I think the appealing aspect of
- 7:12someone like Canard, who the Eagles do like, by the way,
- 7:15is that he does provide versatility. But now you're seeing
- 7:18the Eagles early in training camp work him in two
- 7:21different spots, which I think is a good sign for him.
- 7:23He's still been on the second team, There's been no
- 7:25one really threatening him in that way.
- 7:27Speaker 2: There's a lot of competition there.
- 7:29Speaker 1: It's been only five days of practice, but I think
- 7:31it's fair to say that for those reasons, you have
- 7:33to say stock up for Darren Cannard on the defensive side. Now,
- 7:40this is fresh off of a practice where he got
- 7:42first team reps because Nolan Smith was sidelined with a concussion,
- 7:45so it was josh Ushah the player that we're mentioning here,
- 7:49and Jay Walks Hunt who were the first team edges.
- 7:52Now Ousha to this point has flashed a little bit more.
- 7:56I think it's fair to say than Ojilari through five practices,
- 7:59but the first padded practice, I thought Ousha did a
- 8:02really nice job providing pressure off the edge and making
- 8:05life a little bit challenging and forcing quarterbacks to to
- 8:09kind of leave the pocket and.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Make some hold on the ball a little bit longer
- 8:14than they would like.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Now, there was a host of players who were responsible
- 8:17for those for those hasty decisions that the quarterbacks had
- 8:20to make, but I thought that that Usha made some
- 8:23made some nice plays and gave the tackles fits. He's
- 8:27very quick. He doesn't necessarily have the you know, the
- 8:30the as i'd like to say, the prototypical size for
- 8:33that position, but I thought he showed quickness, he showed
- 8:37some explosiveness off the edge, and that's something that you
- 8:41have to wait and see how that translates. But stock
- 8:44up for Usha, and before practice, vic Vango pretty much
- 8:48said that there's a lot that needs to be resolved
- 8:51here in terms of the reserve edge players behind Nolan
- 8:54Smith and Jayaloxs Hunt, and no one has really stepped
- 8:57up or surfaced I think was the word that he
- 8:59used in a good or a bad way.
- 9:01Speaker 2: But I think for ushe that's something that you can.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Use and build on that moving forward, there's another player,
- 9:08third year defensive tackle Moro Jomo, who has been having
- 9:12a stellar start to training camp. What I like about
- 9:15a Jomo is that he plays with controlled violence, the
- 9:18hand usage, the short area quickness, the ability to use
- 9:23leverage to his advantage. He's not the biggest player, but
- 9:26he's somebody who definitely provides juice and physicality along the interior.
- 9:30And it doesn't seem to matter which interior linement he's
- 9:33going up against. He finds ways at different points to
- 9:36give them fits. He got a hand up I believe
- 9:39to deflect a pass during Team Joe's as well. Just
- 9:42an active player whose motor continues to run hot. I
- 9:45think it's fair to highlight him as a standout through
- 9:49a number of different practices here. I think you have
- 9:51a fair enough sample size to put him in that category.
- 9:56I think out of all the players who are going
- 9:58to be tasked with helping the Eagles make up for
- 10:02the loss of Milton Williams, and that also includes Jordan
- 10:05Davis and rookie Ty Robinson, I think the one who
- 10:08has the most upside, the one who's going to make
- 10:10the biggest leap and the most noticeable impact is going
- 10:13to be Moro Jomo and rounding things out. I also
- 10:17need to mention Jeremiah Trotter Junior, the Eagles second year
- 10:20linebacker out of Clemson, because he always played one hundred
- 10:23and four to defensive snaps last season, so he didn't
- 10:26quite know what he was going to be able to do.
- 10:28But he's gotten the lion's share of the first team
- 10:31reps alongside Zach Bond, and I thought that on Day five, Well,
- 10:36first of all, you always recognize the play recognition and
- 10:41the anticipation, the natural instincts that Trotter Junior brings, and
- 10:45that really counters his lack of natural athleticism and size.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I would say, I think that's fair. He's to he
- 10:54always seems to be in the right spot.
- 10:56Speaker 1: He flows to the football with urgency, and what I
- 10:58noticed on Day five there was a number of plays.
- 11:01One on a run play where he popped will Shipley,
- 11:04his former college teammate, and he swarmed running back Saquon Barkway.
- 11:09On a short dump off where jaywhen Hurts was feeling
- 11:14the pressure and he was waiving his offensive players to
- 11:18come back to the football and he dumped it off
- 11:20to Barkway.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Trotter Junior was right there.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I'm not even sure if the pass was complete, But
- 11:24the highlight in my opinion yesterday was his defense against
- 11:30Alas Goddard on a corner route into the end zone.
- 11:33He ran stride for stride with Goddard, got a hand
- 11:35in there to break up the pass. So I think
- 11:38you have to give Triter Junior credit. He is not
- 11:40going down without a fight. Jehad Campbell, the first round
- 11:44pick at linebacker, also has had a nice summer, but
- 11:47Jeremiah Trotter Junior is not going down without a fight.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Has been a.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Solid five practices for the second year linebacker. Well that's
- 11:55going to do it for this edition of the check
- 11:57O Daily. Andrew Decheko here signing off. Catch up everybody
- 12:00on the next one. H
