- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Let's Talk is proudly presented by attorney Frank Walker. Real talk,
- 0:29Speaker 2: real experience, real results. FrankWalkerLaw.com. Let the conversation begin on
- 0:35Speaker 2: Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Me and Hollis Lewis, we have a couple of guests,
- 0:43Speaker 3: a couple of young men that Hollis is going to introduce.
- 0:48Speaker 3: And I will say this. I'm surrounded by.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Three, I don't want to give you a young man.
- 0:57Speaker 4: I don't want to include you in the young man.
- 0:59Speaker 4: You can include me in that.
- 1:00Speaker 3: But a group of G-Dub former athletes and current athletes.
- 1:05Speaker 4: There you go. The real heel over here. Whatever, whatever.
- 1:10Speaker 4: The real heel. See, that's one I've never heard.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I don't even want to hear that again.
- 1:15Speaker 5: Y'all the fake heel over there. All right, so we
- 1:18Speaker 5: got G-Dub's quarterback, running back. I'm going to let you
- 1:20Speaker 5: guys introduce yourselves. Start with Deshaun.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 1:23Speaker 6: Deshaun Isabel, quarterback.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Jaden Black, running back. Yes, sir. All right, so.
- 1:31Speaker 4: An amazing start to the season. So we're what? I
- 1:35Speaker 4: don't want to say we. Eight no. You can say we.
- 1:38Speaker 4: I don't want to say we. So eight no.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Tell me a little how you feel you got there.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Like what did it take to get there?
- 1:49Speaker 8: I think it was just like all of us coming
- 1:52Speaker 8: on the same accord and then just us watching film.
- 1:55Speaker 8: We live now and just everything, just our mindset of
- 1:59Speaker 8: we need to all just win and we want to
- 2:01Speaker 8: end up with that one goal of winning the state chip.
- 2:04Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:05Speaker 7: Yeah, man.
- 2:05Speaker 6: We just, we put in the work during the summer
- 2:07Speaker 6: and I mean, we just go into the mindset with
- 2:10Speaker 6: everything that we're going to play as hard as we
- 2:12Speaker 6: can and it should pay off for us no matter what.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Now, Deshaun, you are, you transferred from, you played at Capitol.
- 2:19Speaker 5: I think you was kind of part-time. You started a
- 2:22Speaker 5: lot of games for Capitol last year and now you
- 2:24Speaker 5: come in into GW.
- 2:25Speaker 4: How has that transition been for you? I mean, it's good.
- 2:28Speaker 6: As soon as I got there, they pretty much accepted
- 2:30Speaker 6: me and they pushed me to the same limits I
- 2:33Speaker 6: was pushed to when I was at Capitol. And it was,
- 2:36Speaker 6: it was a, it was an easy environment to step in.
- 2:38Speaker 6: Like it was a brotherhood.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Nice.
- 2:41Speaker 3: So making that transition and, and like for somebody like me,
- 2:45Speaker 3: it was, you know, it, I can't even imagine like
- 2:49Speaker 3: leaving a place that I'm comfortable with.
- 2:51Speaker 4: So how, like how, how long did it take you?
- 2:55Speaker 3: I'll say, I don't know how long is the right thing, but,
- 2:58Speaker 3: I would assume it takes you a while to get
- 3:00Speaker 3: adjusted to a new system, a new school system, new people.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Was there a challenge in that at all?
- 3:09Speaker 6: I mean, sort of just with me being an underclassman,
- 3:11Speaker 6: like I was just stepping in and at Capitol, I
- 3:14Speaker 6: kind of like, I was also an underclassman there, but
- 3:18Speaker 6: I had somewhat of a leader role. And now like
- 3:21Speaker 6: I was transferring to a new school where I'm, I'm
- 3:24Speaker 6: used to being a leader and I, They still gave
- 3:26Speaker 6: me the same treatment. I stepped in. I had to
- 3:28Speaker 6: be a leader from the jump.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Now, Coach Edwards, again, he's a little older now, so
- 3:33Speaker 5: I'm sure he's calmed down maybe just a smidge.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Maybe a smidge. But, you know, I played for Coach Edwards.
- 3:40Speaker 5: I was his first class when he came to GW
- 3:43Speaker 5: in 96. So we'll get to you in a minute.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Let you answer this too, Jaden. But how was playing
- 3:50Speaker 5: for Coach Edwards? Because he can be very intense at times.
- 3:53Speaker 5: He can be very jokey at times. So it's always
- 3:56Speaker 5: kind of you got to gauge that situation right.
- 3:59Speaker 4: I mean, it varies.
- 4:01Speaker 6: Like, of course, when it's not time to go to war,
- 4:04Speaker 6: he's playful and he's a nice guy. But when it's
- 4:09Speaker 6: time for the Friday night, when them lights come on,
- 4:11Speaker 6: he's serious. Like, it's no joke. And he was somebody,
- 4:14Speaker 6: he was probably like the first person I got close
- 4:16Speaker 6: with when I got there. He took me in immediately
- 4:19Speaker 6: and treated me like I was one of his as
- 4:21Speaker 6: soon as I got there.
- 4:22Speaker 4: So I love Coach Edwards. Yeah, how about you, Jayden?
- 4:25Speaker 4: I agree with what he said. Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 3: You know, and there's a, I think the trend in
- 4:35Speaker 3: coaching is somewhat kind of going the other way to
- 4:38Speaker 3: where coaches are not as, quote, forceful and may not
- 4:44Speaker 3: be a yelling, screaming, not being trying to push you
- 4:47Speaker 3: and trying to get the most out of you. I
- 4:50Speaker 3: never really had played with a coach that was not
- 4:54Speaker 3: that way. So I'm wondering if by any chance you
- 5:00Speaker 3: would find yourself in a situation where there's a coach
- 5:02Speaker 3: that– or let me just say it this way. How
- 5:05Speaker 3: much do you appreciate the effort and the madness that
- 5:09Speaker 3: comes with Coach Edwards?
- 5:10Speaker 6: I mean, it's amazing. I always felt like if you
- 5:15Speaker 6: was coached harder, you would play harder. That's just what
- 5:18Speaker 6: it is with me.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Okay. Okay.
- 5:22Speaker 8: I think if they– try to push you harder than
- 5:24Speaker 8: they care about you a lot more than if they don't. Because, like,
- 5:29Speaker 8: I know Coach Kearns and Coach Edwards, if they don't
- 5:31Speaker 8: yell at you, either they're super mad or they just
- 5:34Speaker 8: don't care about you.
- 5:36Speaker 4: So that's what I like. He cared a lot about me.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Because I got it a lot.
- 5:42Speaker 3: And, you know, it's funny because I say that, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 3: my coaches in college, Sonny Randall and then Homer Crittle
- 5:48Speaker 3: at South Charleston– you know, I'm, quote, supposed to be
- 5:53Speaker 3: a good player. Brother, there was never any time in
- 5:57Speaker 3: practice did I ever think, or even in a game
- 6:01Speaker 3: if I did something wrong, never was there like this, like, okay,
- 6:04Speaker 3: it's going to be all right. It was yelling, screaming,
- 6:08Speaker 3: and back in the day, grabbing your face mask and
- 6:11Speaker 3: all those kind of things. And while a lot of
- 6:14Speaker 3: those things are, quote, illegal now, I'll make the case
- 6:18Speaker 3: that if you don't have a coach, that is that way, man,
- 6:24Speaker 3: I don't know where the best of you come. I
- 6:26Speaker 3: don't know where it comes from, because it's just hard
- 6:29Speaker 3: not to give it all.
- 6:30Speaker 4: 100%. I agree with you.
- 6:32Speaker 5: So 8-0 this season so far. What would you say,
- 6:36Speaker 5: because you guys don't play defense, just offense, right?
- 6:40Speaker 4: Just offense. One way.
- 6:41Speaker 5: So what has been the strength? Because, again, we've seen
- 6:44Speaker 5: the numbers you're putting up, Jay. We've seen the numbers
- 6:45Speaker 5: you're putting up, Deshaun. What do you think you guys
- 6:48Speaker 5: have done really, really well so far?
- 6:51Speaker 4: I mean, we just like to ride the hot hand.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Whoever's hot that night, we go out and we ride
- 6:55Speaker 6: them for the game. And then we like to jump
- 6:59Speaker 6: out on teams. And if we can get ahead, then
- 7:01Speaker 6: we just try and share the ball around with everybody.
- 7:03Speaker 6: And as long as everybody's happy, that means the intensity
- 7:06Speaker 6: will never go down.
- 7:07Speaker 4: I like that. I like that.
- 7:10Speaker 3: And so both of you, do you both just play
- 7:16Speaker 3: offense or do you play both?
- 7:19Speaker 4: Offensive defense? We just play offense.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Okay.
- 7:21Speaker 3: So if you were to play defense, what would be
- 7:26Speaker 3: your position that you would like to play?
- 7:29Speaker 6: I mean, my whole life I was always a safety
- 7:31Speaker 6: until I got to high school.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Okay. I will probably be outside linebacker. There you go.
- 7:38Speaker 4: He had to get some defenses. So who do we
- 7:41Speaker 4: have coming up this week? Parkersburg South.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Parkersburg South. So what are we looking to do? How
- 7:47Speaker 5: was your assessment of them so far?
- 7:50Speaker 8: Just really that we need to just run the ball
- 7:53Speaker 8: and just our line's going to.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Be real good.
- 7:56Speaker 8: It should be good. Just protect the ball, do what
- 7:59Speaker 8: we need to do, and everything's going to be okay.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:02Speaker 5: And, again, that's this Friday, 7 o'clock at On the Hill,
- 8:07Speaker 5: DW versus Parkersburg. And it's going to be alumni night
- 8:10Speaker 5: too and senior night as well.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Night before the game, what's your prep?
- 8:19Speaker 4: A lot of film.
- 8:22Speaker 6: Just make sure you eat right, hydrate, and just make
- 8:27Speaker 6: sure you stay in touch with all your teammates and
- 8:29Speaker 6: make sure they're on the same page as you.
- 8:32Speaker 8: I watch film with my dad, and then I take
- 8:34Speaker 8: an ice bath, and then I go to my mom's
- 8:36Speaker 8: house before the night ends. Because every morning before the game,
- 8:41Speaker 8: I go to my mom's house and just listen to music.
- 8:44Speaker 8: Just have a fun time before the game.
- 8:46Speaker 4: I like that, I like that. Yeah, me too. Yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 4: I like that a lot. So I was a music
- 8:50Speaker 4: guy too.
- 8:51Speaker 3: And I think there's a whole lot of players that
- 8:53Speaker 3: do like to listen to music. I might be the
- 8:56Speaker 3: only one that listens to slow music.
- 8:59Speaker 4: You got it? I listen to slow music too. Yeah, see,
- 9:01Speaker 4: because it calms you down. It does.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Like, I don't need the hype, because it's already all
- 9:07Speaker 3: through me already, because I already know we're getting ready
- 9:09Speaker 3: to play.
- 9:10Speaker 4: So I need something slow and easy to bring me down. Yeah, 100%.
- 9:14Speaker 7: You know?
- 9:15Speaker 5: So, again, you guys are both offensive players. So I
- 9:17Speaker 5: want to talk a little bit about your offensive coordinator.
- 9:19Speaker 5: He was actually I actually coached him when I was
- 9:23Speaker 5: at GW. I coached after I moved back. So what
- 9:25Speaker 5: has it been experience of.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Playing for him? It's real good.
- 9:30Speaker 8: He likes to connect with the players on a deeper
- 9:32Speaker 8: level than just football. Like he's very loving and he'll
- 9:36Speaker 8: text you and ask you about your day and actually
- 9:39Speaker 8: about your grades before even football.
- 9:41Speaker 4: So he's a nice coach. Nice person, too. I agree.
- 9:43Speaker 6: Just to piggyback off what Jaden said. I mean, he
- 9:47Speaker 6: soon as I like I said, I transfer from Capital.
- 9:49Speaker 6: And like as soon as I got there, he was
- 9:51Speaker 6: just like we snapped immediately. Like he more took me
- 9:55Speaker 6: in as like a friend at first. And then the
- 9:57Speaker 6: coaching side came and then he was.– then that's when
- 10:01Speaker 6: the hard-nosed coaching came towards me, and then that's when
- 10:04Speaker 6: I learned we would be all right.
- 10:06Speaker 5: It's a funny story because I actually went to high
- 10:08Speaker 5: school with his parents, and I ended up– we went
- 10:10Speaker 5: to high school together, and then I ended up coaching
- 10:13Speaker 5: him when I came back to GW and down. He
- 10:15Speaker 5: look up, he's the offensive coordinator, wide receiver at Wayne State.
- 10:19Speaker 5: So just one of those kids, very cerebral, and I
- 10:21Speaker 5: think he's going to be really, really good moving into
- 10:23Speaker 5: the future. Well, and I think guys like that, I think,
- 10:29Speaker 5: learn the game, love putting it back out, giving it
- 10:33Speaker 5: out to somebody else. And a lot of times, if
- 10:36Speaker 5: they have just that right kind of personality, from the
- 10:40Speaker 5: yelling to the– to just the general talking, I think
- 10:44Speaker 5: they have a huge opportunity to be successful because, you know,
- 10:48Speaker 5: you got two of your stars already, you know, talking
- 10:51Speaker 5: about you in a good way.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 3: So, you know, I'd like to see that to be
- 10:56Speaker 3: something that could grow even further.
- 10:58Speaker 5: 100%. And, Deshaun, just from a quarterback perspective, like, you know,
- 11:03Speaker 5: you– A dual-threat quarterback, so you can run the ball,
- 11:06Speaker 5: you do a little bit of the zone read options,
- 11:08Speaker 5: you can pass the ball. Has the game, like, at
- 11:11Speaker 5: this point in your career, being a sophomore, having a
- 11:13Speaker 5: lot of playing time as a freshman starting this season,
- 11:15Speaker 5: has it slowed down for you a little bit?
- 11:17Speaker 4: I mean, of course.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Just, you know, you start getting out there and you
- 11:20Speaker 6: play more, you get experience, then you just learn how
- 11:24Speaker 6: to go with the situation, and then your mind slows
- 11:28Speaker 6: down and you be out there and you just play.
- 11:30Speaker 4: It's just the flow of the game.
- 11:31Speaker 7: Nice.
- 11:32Speaker 4: I like that. I like that.
- 11:33Speaker 5: And Jaden, you know, being what you did as a freshman,
- 11:37Speaker 5: did you feel any pressure coming into this year to
- 11:39Speaker 5: sort of match or supersede those numbers?
- 11:42Speaker 8: I think there's always some type of pressure from everybody
- 11:45Speaker 8: else or just from yourself. So, yeah, I felt a
- 11:47Speaker 8: little bit of pressure. But honestly, just I went to
- 11:50Speaker 8: the beach before the season started. So that doing that
- 11:54Speaker 8: just took a lot of pressure off of me and.
- 11:57Speaker 8: Just the coaches and my dad preparing me for the
- 11:59Speaker 8: season just took a lot of pressure.
- 12:01Speaker 4: See, I see how you go. You the relax, bro.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Bro be relaxed. He listen to slow jams, going to
- 12:07Speaker 4: the beach, he chilling.
- 12:10Speaker 3: And I think that there's an interesting component to what
- 12:13Speaker 3: it is that you do, you know, prior to the season,
- 12:18Speaker 3: prior to a game. Like, to your point, listening to
- 12:22Speaker 3: slow music, like you said, you know that's what you
- 12:25Speaker 3: need to do because it's going to bring you down,
- 12:28Speaker 3: slow you down a little bit.
- 12:30Speaker 4: And it doesn't matter if you.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Like fast music, you like rap, you like country, you
- 12:35Speaker 3: like whatever. There's a reason and a justifiable reason that
- 12:39Speaker 3: I think that some people, the public, I don't think
- 12:41Speaker 3: really realizes how much music does for football as a
- 12:46Speaker 3: football player to help you get yourself set and ready
- 12:50Speaker 3: to go for a game. Do you think it is
- 12:53Speaker 3: important for you to both of you? I'm asking this
- 12:56Speaker 3: to both of you. It's super important that you have
- 12:58Speaker 3: that music around or you would know what to do.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Am I right?
- 13:02Speaker 7: Right.
- 13:03Speaker 6: I mean, I usually during games, I'll be, I like
- 13:06Speaker 6: to be serious. I don't like to play around at all.
- 13:08Speaker 6: So I came up here to G dub. I go
- 13:11Speaker 6: in the sideline. We go, we on defense. I see
- 13:14Speaker 6: him over there playing around, dancing, all the music. I mean,
- 13:17Speaker 6: it kind of just, It made me come out of
- 13:19Speaker 6: my shell a little bit. And I started dancing with
- 13:21Speaker 6: him a little bit at times and just enjoying myself
- 13:24Speaker 6: on the sideline just to take myself away from the
- 13:27Speaker 6: game just a little bit.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Now, we often talk about on this show, we grew
- 13:30Speaker 5: up in the era, obviously, where we didn't have the
- 13:32Speaker 5: Internet and everything like that. So, like, you know, I
- 13:34Speaker 5: can particularly remember in high school, you know, Saturdays and
- 13:38Speaker 5: Sundays was like college football day, NFL football all day,
- 13:43Speaker 5: you know, Mondays, all that. So, do you guys, like,
- 13:46Speaker 5: watch a lot of football at college and NFL? Or
- 13:49Speaker 5: is it something you more, like, highlights and then I'll,
- 13:52Speaker 5: you know, I'll just worry about playing?
- 13:54Speaker 8: I'm more of a, I don't really watch until it's, like,
- 13:56Speaker 8: a big game. Like, I'm an O-State fan, so I
- 13:59Speaker 8: don't watch until they get to the playoffs. Or, like,
- 14:01Speaker 8: I like the Buccaneers, so I don't watch. Well, we
- 14:04Speaker 8: doing the bad.
- 14:04Speaker 4: This year, but it's okay.
- 14:06Speaker 3: That's because you're in the wrong conference. You shouldn't be
- 14:08Speaker 3: in the conference with us, right?
- 14:10Speaker 7: I agree.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we.
- 14:12Speaker 6: I mean, I watch games at times, but like he said,
- 14:15Speaker 6: I'm a guy who likes to watch his teams, and
- 14:19Speaker 6: I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan, and we not looking too good.
- 14:23Speaker 4: You inherited that, huh, from Pops? Yeah, yeah. You inherited that.
- 14:27Speaker 9: Grew up.
- 14:27Speaker 4: It wasn't a lot.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Well, fortunately or unfortunately, I grew up a Browns fan
- 14:34Speaker 3: because of my dad.
- 14:36Speaker 4: That's even worse. It is. Bro, you got a couple
- 14:41Speaker 4: more of those, bro. We're going to end the show.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Y'all doing all right this year, though. Y'all doing all
- 14:47Speaker 4: right this year, though.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Well, I ain't worried about them now. I got the
- 14:50Speaker 5: Vikings going. You Minnesota all day. They cut the check. Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 4: So tell me a little bit about what's your future goals.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Man, we want to win a state championship three years straight.
- 15:04Speaker 6: That's the only goal we got.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Love it.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Okay. Okay.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Now, individual goal. What's your goal as a future athlete?
- 15:15Speaker 3: It might not be athletics, but what's your goal?
- 15:20Speaker 6: Just to go play at a D1 level, whether it
- 15:23Speaker 6: be at football or basketball. I mean, I just want
- 15:27Speaker 6: to play at a D1 level.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Doesn't matter what sport, just as long as it's D1. Right.
- 15:33Speaker 8: I want to go D1 in football and then maybe
- 15:36Speaker 8: get my psychological degree.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Okay. That's what my daughter's majoring in currently. That's nice, man.
- 15:43Speaker 5: So what is something, because oftentimes we talk about, you know,
- 15:50Speaker 5: especially if you like us, we play football since we
- 15:52Speaker 5: was six, seven years old, all the way. He played
- 15:55Speaker 5: in the NFL, obviously. I played all the way through college.
- 15:57Speaker 5: and a lot of time your identity gets wrapped up
- 16:00Speaker 5: in that. So what are some of your other interests
- 16:02Speaker 5: outside of athletics and sports?
- 16:06Speaker 6: I've been looking into taking a trade at Carver to
- 16:10Speaker 6: be an electrician.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Nice. That's awesome.
- 16:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:14Speaker 8: If football don't work so, like psychology or getting a
- 16:18Speaker 8: trade in plumbing.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Okay.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Well, again, and I say that with the caveat, even
- 16:23Speaker 5: if you're looking at psychology, It can always work out
- 16:26Speaker 5: because we can always work in athletics in some capacity. So,
- 16:30Speaker 5: you know, as far as a professional career, if that's
- 16:32Speaker 5: not the path, you can work within the sports psychologist
- 16:36Speaker 5: and doing different things in and around the sports. So
- 16:39Speaker 5: it's always that little corny NCAA commercial. I went professional
- 16:42Speaker 5: in something other than, you know, but you can also,
- 16:45Speaker 5: you know, maintain and work within the sport and just
- 16:47Speaker 5: grow in a different capacity.
- 16:49Speaker 4: And there's the opportunity, you know, to.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Actually be able to what I call a true give back.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Being back home, you know, being able to do anything
- 17:03Speaker 3: that can touch a athlete. Doesn't matter where he goes,
- 17:07Speaker 3: who he is, who she is, what teams they play.
- 17:11Speaker 3: There's just a place in there where every now and
- 17:12Speaker 3: then the experience that you had, the experience that you have,
- 17:16Speaker 3: it's going to.
- 17:16Speaker 4: Be worth somebody hearing, you know what I'm saying?
- 17:20Speaker 3: So when you get done, whenever that is, Your story
- 17:25Speaker 3: is going to be helpful to somebody, and you'll need
- 17:29Speaker 3: to tell that story maybe more times than what you think.
- 17:33Speaker 3: So make sure that you keep it documented. Make sure
- 17:37Speaker 3: that you are fully aware of who you were, what
- 17:40Speaker 3: you were thinking, what you wanted to do, how you
- 17:42Speaker 3: wanted to do it, how it played out. Because you're
- 17:46Speaker 3: going to need that. You're going to need that because
- 17:48Speaker 3: you're going to have– you'll end up helping somebody more
- 17:51Speaker 3: so than what you think right now.
- 17:55Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yeah, man.
- 17:57Speaker 5: Well, we appreciate you guys coming through. And tell them
- 18:00Speaker 5: one more time the game, time, all that. Give them
- 18:03Speaker 5: the rundown.
- 18:05Speaker 8: It's Friday, 7.30 p.m.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Against Parkersburg South at the Roohoo. There you go.
- 18:11Speaker 2: I love it.
- 18:11Speaker 4: Pop out and see it. Pop out and see it.
- 18:13Speaker 4: Pop out and see it.
- 18:14Speaker 7: It's going to be a show.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Yo, yo, I guess we didn't have enough. I didn't
- 18:22Speaker 3: see too much of this color already coming out.
- 18:24Speaker 7: So, all right.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we'll be right back. We're going

- 19:50Speaker 2: The conversation begin on Let's Talk.
- 19:53Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Hollis, I appreciate you having those young men come in.
- 19:57Speaker 3: It was a good chance to have a conversation.
- 20:01Speaker 4: With them, man.
- 20:01Speaker 5: And I know we did that in the past a lot,
- 20:03Speaker 5: talking about how we've kind of gotten away from that
- 20:05Speaker 5: a little bit, but maybe that's something we need to
- 20:07Speaker 5: you know, start doing again because it's always good to
- 20:09Speaker 5: have the local guys and just, you know, their energies.
- 20:12Speaker 5: I love their answers. You could tell they prepped. You
- 20:15Speaker 5: know what I'm saying? I would have been coming here
- 20:17Speaker 5: at that age with a bunch of ahs.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Well, and to that, they're able, as nervous as they were,
- 20:24Speaker 3: you couldn't even tell it like in the answers. You know,
- 20:27Speaker 3: they answered it straightforward and, you know, and back in
- 20:32Speaker 3: the day, man, like you said, stuttering and everything.
- 20:36Speaker 4: You didn't have no sort of prep.
- 20:38Speaker 5: So one other thing I wanted to talk about, and again,
- 20:41Speaker 5: we don't talk about soccer on this show a lot,
- 20:44Speaker 5: but there was a story from one of the, and again,
- 20:46Speaker 5: forgive me, I don't know if it's the Premier League,
- 20:48Speaker 5: it's one of the soccer leagues in Europe. And essentially
- 20:52Speaker 5: what they do is that in addition to like sort
- 20:55Speaker 5: of the regular season, they'll have like these tournaments. You
- 20:58Speaker 5: know how like the NBA has like the NBA Cups,
- 20:59Speaker 5: so they'll have these like Cups and different tournaments organized
- 21:03Speaker 5: within the league or within the season. And within those cups,
- 21:09Speaker 5: they'll have a wide range of teams. So to put
- 21:11Speaker 5: it in context, American context, like, for example, it'd be like,
- 21:15Speaker 5: you know, the Cincinnati Reds at the MLB level, and
- 21:18Speaker 5: they would play against the power here locally. So the
- 21:21Speaker 5: AAA and single-A major league teams would play... Well, yeah,
- 21:24Speaker 5: I guess in effect. They would play... They could play
- 21:27Speaker 5: the major league teams. They could play teams within the
- 21:29Speaker 5: division and all that. So there was a team... And
- 21:33Speaker 5: forgive me, I don't know the team's name, but they
- 21:35Speaker 5: played the Arsenal. So this would be a team, and
- 21:38Speaker 5: just to put it in further context, this team's payroll
- 21:42Speaker 5: was about $ 3 million total. And the Arsenal's payroll is over,
- 21:47Speaker 5: I think, a couple billion dollars. So that tells you
- 21:50Speaker 5: the disparity in the levels in which they're at, right?
- 21:54Speaker 5: So you're talking about internationally well-known players playing against essentially
- 21:59Speaker 5: unknown local guys, in effect. And this team... This little
- 22:03Speaker 5: farm team beat the big boys. So it'll be, again,
- 22:06Speaker 5: like the power playing against the Cincinnati Reds and winning
- 22:10Speaker 5: that game.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 5: And we talked about this briefly on the show in
- 22:15Speaker 5: times past. Do you think some– because we kind of
- 22:19Speaker 5: have that with March Madness. where you have like the
- 22:22Speaker 5: lower level division one teams playing against, you know, the
- 22:25Speaker 5: Dukes and the Kansas and everything like that. But do
- 22:27Speaker 5: you think something like that could work in a, in a, in,
- 22:30Speaker 5: in like baseball or the NBA G league guys playing
- 22:35Speaker 5: against the NBA? Do you think something like that could
- 22:37Speaker 5: work in American sports?
- 22:39Speaker 4: Um, I'm afraid to say football and basketball.
- 22:46Speaker 3: And, and the reason why I would, I'm afraid to
- 22:49Speaker 3: say like basketball, um, Because I think the talent level
- 22:53Speaker 3: and the experience that NBA-type guys have over college or
- 23:02Speaker 3: anybody in between is just unbelievable.
- 23:07Speaker 4: And I think the same thing with football. Well, football's impossible.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Yeah, because the physicality is going to be the thing.
- 23:15Speaker 3: But if we just talk basketball.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I think that the skill set doesn't have to be
- 23:24Speaker 3: that far apart.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Like, there's also that younger thing. Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 3: You know, up and down the court. Can they get
- 23:35Speaker 3: up and down the court? Yeah, that could be good
- 23:36Speaker 3: or bad, I guess. That could be a good or
- 23:38Speaker 3: bad thing.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Because I think about it in terms of, like, for example,
- 23:42Speaker 5: I'm just saying just like college basketball, you know, and
- 23:46Speaker 5: obviously college basketball is about to start. So they got
- 23:50Speaker 5: some preseason stuff. So in about probably the next week,
- 23:53Speaker 5: the season will start. And we know generally from like,
- 23:56Speaker 5: you know, November to January, you know, it ain't really
- 24:00Speaker 5: too much going on as far. They'll play like some tournaments.
- 24:02Speaker 5: They'll have like the Maui Invitational. They'll have some other stuff.
- 24:05Speaker 5: So what if there was a situation in which we'll
- 24:08Speaker 5: just say, hey, we're going to lump everybody together. We're
- 24:10Speaker 5: going to get some D3s. We're going to get some NIAs.
- 24:12Speaker 5: We're going to get some Division IIs, some Division I's.
- 24:16Speaker 5: We're going to throw y'all in. Just throw everybody in.
- 24:18Speaker 5: And then from November to January, until y'all get into
- 24:22Speaker 5: conference play, we're going to do just a big old
- 24:24Speaker 5: tournament cup and just see who comes out of it.
- 24:28Speaker 4: Do you think people will watch it? Yes, I do.
- 24:31Speaker 3: I think to whatever level that you're at, let's just say,
- 24:36Speaker 3: you know, whether it be Marshall or WVU or West
- 24:40Speaker 3: Virginia State, You see, like, that fan base is going
- 24:44Speaker 3: to go crazy.
- 24:45Speaker 4: They're going to go crazy. They're going to go crazy.
- 24:47Speaker 3: And especially don't let one of those teams, even if
- 24:51Speaker 3: they get stuck, and I'll say stuck, with a legitimate
- 24:57Speaker 3: top team, you want to see.
- 25:00Speaker 4: You want to see. And I think I personally, again,
- 25:03Speaker 4: it'll never work in football. It just wouldn't.
- 25:06Speaker 5: But I think, like, a baseball, a basketball, possibly a
- 25:09Speaker 5: soccer team, But I think basketball would be interesting. And
- 25:13Speaker 5: I think, man, you would have some small, lower-level teams
- 25:17Speaker 5: pull off maybe a victory or two.
- 25:20Speaker 3: I think that possibly could happen because now you're talking
- 25:25Speaker 3: about getting up and down the court.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:27Speaker 3: You're talking about shots. Is there a belief that... Can
- 25:35Speaker 3: the older guy, older team, let's just say the youngest
- 25:40Speaker 3: guy on the team could be, let's say, 35.
- 25:44Speaker 7: Wow.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Okay?
- 25:46Speaker 3: And now your oldest guy for the college team might
- 25:52Speaker 3: be 22.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Can they run them to death? Can they get up
- 25:59Speaker 4: and down the court enough, fast enough? It's possible. I mean,
- 26:03Speaker 4: that would be interesting, man.
- 26:04Speaker 5: I just think, I think that sort of style, I
- 26:08Speaker 5: can see why like a European, I can see the
- 26:11Speaker 5: interest in that. And I think that, you know, we
- 26:14Speaker 5: talk about, you know, viewership and different, again, now, NIL
- 26:19Speaker 5: sort of changes things, but I think it would be,
- 26:21Speaker 5: I don't know, I just think it would be interesting
- 26:22Speaker 5: if we did something like that, particularly like in the
- 26:24Speaker 5: preseason when nobody's watching. But I want to talk about
- 26:28Speaker 5: basketball really really quick um because i want to bring
- 26:36Speaker 5: you this schedule so mississippi valley state so this is
- 26:39Speaker 5: the hbcu in mississippi so this is their off excuse
- 26:45Speaker 5: me that they're out of conference schedule now we know
- 26:48Speaker 5: similar to football you have money games and those money
- 26:51Speaker 5: games you generally plan against um you know uh teams
- 26:55Speaker 5: from getting paid to essentially lose.
- 26:58Speaker 9: Yes.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Right.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Beat up to get beat, to get beat up. Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 4: So that's it. And I lost it. All right.
- 27:03Speaker 5: So this is the out of conference schedule. And I
- 27:06Speaker 5: want to preface this by saying, these are our way games.
- 27:09Speaker 5: And again, this is Mississippi Valley state in Mississippi. They
- 27:13Speaker 5: go to Oklahoma. They go to Washington state. They go
- 27:18Speaker 5: to Oregon. Then Oregon state. The number 12, Kansas. Then
- 27:24Speaker 5: New Mexico.
- 27:24Speaker 7: Okay.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Then go to Michigan. Then back to North Texas. Then
- 27:29Speaker 5: back to UConn. Then Mississippi State. That's near the crib.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Near Tulane. That's next door. Then Ohio State. Then Texas Tech.
- 27:40Speaker 5: Then back to Baylor. Then back to Alabama State. Then
- 27:45Speaker 5: they go into conference play. They can play Alabama State
- 27:48Speaker 5: and Alabama A & M and all of them.
- 27:49Speaker 7: Does this school just give free tuition to everybody? Every
- 27:53Speaker 7: one of those is like million-dollar money games.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Brutal.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Again, so I would imagine, to Matt's point, they're getting
- 28:02Speaker 5: paid for each of these games. So it's probably maybe
- 28:04Speaker 5: a couple hundred grand up to a million. Is it
- 28:07Speaker 5: worth it to do that? This is the men's basketball
- 28:10Speaker 5: team Mississippi Valley State schedule.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Is it worth it?
- 28:13Speaker 3: I'm going to say hesitantly, I'm going to say yes,
- 28:17Speaker 3: because I'm thinking the only reason I could find a
- 28:20Speaker 3: way to justify that being the case is we as
- 28:25Speaker 3: the administration, coaches, and all that, we need money into
- 28:31Speaker 3: the system.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:33Speaker 3: So let's go get it at some point in time.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Let's go get it.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Let's sacrifice this particular season. We'll have them at a conference.
- 28:43Speaker 3: It ain't the whole season. Yes, but I'm just saying.
- 28:48Speaker 3: It might be the season now that you say that.
- 28:50Speaker 3: It could be the season.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Because, I mean, when you get beat up like that,
- 28:53Speaker 4: like where is the confidence?
- 28:55Speaker 3: Now, unless you're saying after every game, we didn't expect
- 28:59Speaker 3: to win this game.
- 29:01Speaker 4: You got to remember, we're building confidence. The program. But
- 29:04Speaker 4: you're not going to tell the boys that. You ain't
- 29:06Speaker 4: going to tell the boys that.
- 29:10Speaker 3: How are you going to have that schedule and not
- 29:12Speaker 3: let me know what I'm in for?
- 29:16Speaker 7: You got to be eating filet mignon for the team
- 29:20Speaker 7: meal every team meal after that.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Because again, and again, these rankings can change. But let's
- 29:26Speaker 5: see who they play in this preseason ranking.
- 29:29Speaker 4: So this is based off last year.
- 29:31Speaker 5: They played number 12 Kansas, excuse me, Arkansas, which they
- 29:36Speaker 5: got my guy, what's my guy's name, the coach there,
- 29:38Speaker 5: played the coach of Kentucky. I can't think of his name. Anyway,
- 29:42Speaker 5: they got number 12, Arkansas. They play number 16, Michigan.
- 29:48Speaker 5: They played number four UConn. They just won a couple
- 29:51Speaker 5: championships in the last few years. And number 19 Texas Tech.
- 29:56Speaker 5: This is a small, small– I think I want to say, yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 5: this is a small Division I.
- 30:01Speaker 4: They play in the SWAC.
- 30:03Speaker 5: So this is a school that they normally– you know,
- 30:06Speaker 5: they're playing like Grambling in Alabama A & M. But
- 30:09Speaker 5: I guess the question I have, and Matt, you can
- 30:12Speaker 5: chime in, please. If you're going to play that many
- 30:15Speaker 5: money games– At what point or at what level do
- 30:20Speaker 5: you compensate those players?
- 30:22Speaker 4: So we're saying.
- 30:25Speaker 5: You got to do this for the school because, again,
- 30:27Speaker 5: that money just don't stay with the basketball program. So
- 30:31Speaker 5: I'm sure they get maybe a nice cut out of it,
- 30:34Speaker 5: but some of that money is probably going to be
- 30:35Speaker 5: dispensed throughout the athletic department, right? I would say some
- 30:41Speaker 5: of it. Maybe not all of it, but some of it.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Then you still got to cover expenses as far as travel,
- 30:46Speaker 5: which basketball is not like football. So you got a
- 30:48Speaker 5: bag and a plane, you go. But at what point
- 30:51Speaker 5: or what level should the boys be compensated? Should they
- 30:56Speaker 5: get an extra check? Should they get, like you said,
- 30:58Speaker 5: the filet mignon or something?
- 31:02Speaker 3: I think that there needs to be something set. And
- 31:08Speaker 3: let's just say at the end of the season, each
- 31:11Speaker 3: player is going to get this. Based off because you
- 31:15Speaker 3: played all because we because we played all these games
- 31:18Speaker 3: and especially the senior who is basically sacrificing his senior year.
- 31:24Speaker 4: I even think of it like that, you know, to.
- 31:27Speaker 3: To to to attack all these teams and lose and
- 31:31Speaker 3: knowing that you're going to lose even before you get there.
- 31:36Speaker 3: You got to justify that to me some kind of way.
- 31:38Speaker 3: I'm going to watch these games.
- 31:40Speaker 7: Do they do this every year?
- 31:42Speaker 4: No, not– I mean, again, maybe it's just something we
- 31:44Speaker 4: haven't paid to before. Yeah, yeah.
- 31:46Speaker 5: You know, because, again, we always think of it in
- 31:48Speaker 5: football where you have like one or two little money games.
- 31:51Speaker 5: We don't necessarily think about that in basketball, you know,
- 31:54Speaker 5: in terms of this. And I'm sure there's always, you know,
- 31:57Speaker 5: state of play, Marshall sometimes and different things like that.
- 32:00Speaker 5: But you're not doing– this is extreme because not only
- 32:03Speaker 5: are they playing all these good teams and higher level teams,
- 32:06Speaker 5: They're traveling. So they're literally going from one side of
- 32:09Speaker 5: the country to the next. They're literally going from Washington
- 32:13Speaker 5: State to UConn to Ohio State to Texas. Ohio State
- 32:18Speaker 5: to Texas, that's a trip, man.
- 32:19Speaker 4: That's crazy. You know what I mean?
- 32:21Speaker 7: I mean, because you get basically, what, a month and
- 32:24Speaker 7: a half of out-of-conference play in basketball before you start.
- 32:27Speaker 7: I mean, it's like late December before you start your
- 32:29Speaker 7: conference play. Yeah. I mean, this could be a good
- 32:34Speaker 7: recipe on how to kind of sort of shortchange the
- 32:38Speaker 7: NIL situation. If you're a smaller school, you know you
- 32:42Speaker 7: need money to get good players. I mean, this could
- 32:46Speaker 7: be a good way to do it. I mean, you're
- 32:49Speaker 7: going to recruit somebody and say, look, we're going to
- 32:51Speaker 7: play a lot of these big-time Division I teams, and
- 32:54Speaker 7: it may not be easy.
- 32:55Speaker 4: That's a good point.
- 32:56Speaker 7: But you're going to get paid if you come here
- 32:58Speaker 7: and do it.
- 32:59Speaker 5: And again, and this is for two months. So this
- 33:02Speaker 5: schedule starts November 6th. And that last out-of-conference game against
- 33:07Speaker 5: Baylor is December 29th.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Wow.
- 33:10Speaker 4: So this is about 60 days of getting them hands. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:16Speaker 3: And now, okay, so here's another question. And I thought
- 33:20Speaker 3: of it as Matt was talking.
- 33:21Speaker 9: So.
- 33:26Speaker 3: To the fact that we're going to get money for NIL,
- 33:30Speaker 3: and we're going to bring some legitimate players in.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Possibly. Possibly. With that money?
- 33:40Speaker 3: And let's say you're out there somewhere, but I'm putting
- 33:43Speaker 3: some money in front of you to get you to
- 33:45Speaker 3: my– See, my problem is I don't think it's all.
- 33:48Speaker 4: Going to go in-house. If it was in-house, I think
- 33:51Speaker 4: it would be truly okay. Yeah. But I don't think
- 33:55Speaker 4: it's going to be. Oh, it ain't going to be in-house.
- 33:56Speaker 3: It's not going to be all in-house. It's going to
- 33:59Speaker 3: be to get other players from other places. And when
- 34:03Speaker 3: you do that, somebody got to go. Somebody got to go.
- 34:08Speaker 4: I ain't think about it like that, but, I mean,
- 34:09Speaker 4: you're right, man.
- 34:10Speaker 5: It's– To your point, I think what you're trying to
- 34:14Speaker 5: say is basically we're going to do all this, we're
- 34:16Speaker 5: going to play all these games for you to pay
- 34:18Speaker 5: somebody else.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Yes.
- 34:21Speaker 9: Yes.
- 34:21Speaker 7: I'm curious about this, so I did a little bit
- 34:23Speaker 7: of search here. So, like, for some of these buy-in
- 34:26Speaker 7: games that they call them, like Nebraska, for example, they
- 34:30Speaker 7: pay out $ 300, 000 for a game like that. Kentucky to
- 34:36Speaker 7: Georgia Tech is like $ 150, 000 for a game. San Jose
- 34:38Speaker 7: State is like $ 180, 000. I mean, they're all pretty much
- 34:44Speaker 7: like six figures, five, six figures.
- 34:47Speaker 5: And see, to that point, and again, if we're talking
- 34:51Speaker 5: about playing two months worth of games, so this would
- 34:54Speaker 5: probably be rack up. You could probably rack up a
- 34:56Speaker 5: couple million is probably what they're going to get, right?
- 34:58Speaker 5: But this is why I say there needs to be
- 35:02Speaker 5: a– when we talk about the Save College Sports Act,
- 35:05Speaker 5: I talked about it earlier this week, there needs to
- 35:07Speaker 5: be a revenue-sharing model built within it. So you don't
- 35:11Speaker 5: have to do this because, again, this may work for
- 35:14Speaker 5: basketball because, again, you're going to get beat up, but
- 35:17Speaker 5: it's not like football where.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Physical. Yeah.
- 35:20Speaker 5: If you take two or three money games, bro, you
- 35:22Speaker 5: to your point, coach, you might be done for the season.
- 35:25Speaker 5: You might get guys hurt. This might just be demoralized.
- 35:28Speaker 7: Right.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:29Speaker 5: So I think within that, although, you know, those are
- 35:32Speaker 5: some pretty nice paydays and again to travel with basketball.
- 35:35Speaker 5: If you're getting a $ 300, 000 check, your travel may be
- 35:38Speaker 5: only 20, 30 grand with basketball because it's not football
- 35:41Speaker 5: and the guy's just got a bag and you can
- 35:43Speaker 5: just go. So it could be some nice paydays. And
- 35:46Speaker 5: I think to the further point, if you're going to
- 35:49Speaker 5: do this to me, you got to figure out a
- 35:50Speaker 5: way to keep it in-house, pay those guys, make sure
- 35:53Speaker 5: they get a cut of that, and to figure out
- 35:56Speaker 5: how you can keep as much money as possible within
- 35:58Speaker 5: the basketball program.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Okay, so, and I think the challenge to that is,
- 36:04Speaker 3: So let's say we got 15 players on the roster.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Five of those, let's say seven of those, eight of
- 36:12Speaker 3: those are guys that are getting money, that are getting
- 36:17Speaker 3: legitimate money because they're starters, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 36:20Speaker 5: And they're in Mississippi Valley, so ain't nobody getting no
- 36:22Speaker 5: legitimate money. Right. But they're getting some.
- 36:24Speaker 4: A little taste.
- 36:25Speaker 9: Right.
- 36:27Speaker 3: And all of a sudden, though, you get in your
- 36:30Speaker 3: hands this amount of money, You're not going to try
- 36:36Speaker 3: to replace the backup guy.
- 36:40Speaker 4: What you're going to do is you're going.
- 36:41Speaker 3: To turn me as the starter into the backup guy
- 36:45Speaker 3: and bring you in and pay you.
- 36:48Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean, that's a good point. But I
- 36:52Speaker 5: think a trip like this, if we're going to say
- 36:54Speaker 5: we're going to get beat up for two months, I
- 36:55Speaker 5: think your first obligation, you got to just go ahead
- 36:57Speaker 5: and break those guys off. The guys on the team
- 36:59Speaker 5: got to get paid first. And then, you know, obviously
- 37:02Speaker 5: you got to set yourself up for the future as well. Okay,
- 37:04Speaker 5: so when you say, okay, so we play these games.
- 37:10Speaker 5: You're going to cut me a check.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Yeah, something. Okay, so you can't cut me a check
- 37:15Speaker 4: to break even because.
- 37:19Speaker 5: That defeats the purpose. That defeats the whole purpose. I
- 37:21Speaker 5: ain't saying, like, you're going to get paid a lot. Again,
- 37:24Speaker 5: I'm just saying you got to get something out of this.
- 37:26Speaker 5: I don't think it's fair for you to, like you said,
- 37:31Speaker 5: get all this money to not only, you know, help
- 37:34Speaker 5: support the athletic department as a whole, but help support
- 37:38Speaker 5: the future basketball team, which I as an eighth or
- 37:41Speaker 5: tenth guy on the bench may not even be a
- 37:44Speaker 5: part of, for real. So it's like I got to
- 37:46Speaker 5: get something in my hands now to justify this. And then,
- 37:50Speaker 5: you know, although just something. It ain't got to be
- 37:52Speaker 5: a whole lot, but you got to get those guys
- 37:54Speaker 5: something for this, for this two months.
- 37:56Speaker 3: So let's just say that, okay, so they pay you
- 37:59Speaker 3: because you're one of the main guys.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:01Speaker 3: And... Now they're looking at me and they're saying, well, okay,
- 38:06Speaker 3: he got off the bench a few times and played
- 38:07Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 38:09Speaker 5: What do we really want to give him? I don't
- 38:10Speaker 5: think it works. I think it's just like it's got
- 38:12Speaker 5: to be we're going to give you guys this. And
- 38:16Speaker 5: I think everybody got to get something.
- 38:20Speaker 3: I don't think that the sports system can ever be
- 38:25Speaker 3: structured or will ever think about structuring it in a
- 38:29Speaker 3: manner in which you got this much, so we're going
- 38:32Speaker 3: to give you that much. I don't think it's ever
- 38:34Speaker 3: going to– I think if they can save money and
- 38:37Speaker 3: give me two and give you 20, they're fine.
- 38:41Speaker 5: Yeah, but that ain't– I mean, that's just not equitable.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Not with that schedule. Because, again, if I'm the eighth,
- 38:47Speaker 5: tenth guy on the bench, hell, I still got to travel.
- 38:50Speaker 5: I got to get up and I'm going to play
- 38:51Speaker 5: because we're going to get beat up.
- 38:53Speaker 3: But that's across the board. That's in any sport at
- 38:58Speaker 3: any given time.
- 38:59Speaker 5: I understand that, but I'm just talking about in this
- 39:01Speaker 5: particular situation.
- 39:03Speaker 4: Okay. So you're basically sacrificing us.
- 39:07Speaker 7: Yes.
- 39:07Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying?
- 39:08Speaker 9: Yes.
- 39:08Speaker 4: I think so.
- 39:09Speaker 3: And I think there still has to be a justifiable
- 39:14Speaker 3: reason for For me to look down at the players who, quote,
- 39:19Speaker 3: might not play that much and drop them something that
- 39:22Speaker 3: is something that's going to make them happy, not just
- 39:27Speaker 3: something just so.
- 39:27Speaker 4: They can go away. I'm just saying... I got you.
- 39:31Speaker 4: If you give me, you got $ 200, 000.
- 39:34Speaker 3: They give me $ 10, 000.
- 39:38Speaker 7: I got some numbers for you here. This is reported
- 39:44Speaker 7: by a website called The Sideline. Mississippi Valley State By sports,
- 39:51Speaker 7: football gets $ 1. 8 million. That gets 51% of the money
- 39:55Speaker 7: down there. Men's basketball, $ 750, 000. So looking at individual players here,
- 40:00Speaker 7: let's see here. There's 12 players listed. The highest is
- 40:05Speaker 7: paid $ 72, 000. The lowest is $ 52, 000.
- 40:06Speaker 9: Hey.
- 40:10Speaker 7: So everybody's making at least $ 50, 000, and the highest is
- 40:12Speaker 7: about $ 20, 000 higher.
- 40:14Speaker 4: And again... And that's a good window. And that's a
- 40:17Speaker 4: good window.
- 40:18Speaker 5: But I also think, on top of what you're paying
- 40:21Speaker 5: with that, if you're going to do this to me
- 40:23Speaker 5: for two months, I need a little extra. That's all
- 40:27Speaker 5: I'm saying. If you're going to do this to me
- 40:29Speaker 5: for two months, I need just a little bit extra.
- 40:32Speaker 5: We got to put a cherry on top of that.
- 40:34Speaker 5: But let's move on. I know we're about.
- 40:36Speaker 7: To go, but....
- 40:39Speaker 4: Deion.
- 40:41Speaker 7: Talk about got to go.
- 40:42Speaker 5: He's at Colorado this season, last season, essentially every season
- 40:49Speaker 5: without Shador and Travis Hunter. It's been terrible. He don't
- 40:55Speaker 5: know who to play at quarterback.
- 40:59Speaker 4: There was a.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Report today about him kind of just being almost disrespectful
- 41:04Speaker 5: to the history of Colorado football. Even last year when
- 41:09Speaker 5: he put his son's jersey in the rafters and didn't
- 41:13Speaker 5: retire other players who should have maybe been in front
- 41:15Speaker 5: of him as far as Colorado football history. You know,
- 41:18Speaker 5: is this a situation in which, you know, is Deion
- 41:23Speaker 5: worth it anymore? Or is it just time to go
- 41:25Speaker 5: at this point? It's definitely time to go.
- 41:28Speaker 3: And the problem when you start talking about Deion is
- 41:36Speaker 3: his expectation– from the sidelines, from the fans, from the money,
- 41:43Speaker 3: from this and this and this. His expectation is, you're
- 41:47Speaker 3: going to give me what I need and what I
- 41:49Speaker 3: want because I'm this guy. And when you get into
- 41:54Speaker 3: the system, the system doesn't, The system does not identify
- 41:58Speaker 3: you as the guy.
- 42:00Speaker 5: That's a heck of a way to put it, bro.
- 42:02Speaker 5: That is a heck of a way to put it.
- 42:05Speaker 5: It does not look at you and say, oh, that's
- 42:07Speaker 5: the dude.
- 42:08Speaker 4: I never thought about that. I mean, that's a life
- 42:11Speaker 4: lesson right there. It doesn't look at you and say, oh,
- 42:15Speaker 4: it's Deion. We got to do more for him. No,
- 42:17Speaker 4: we don't. No, we don't. You know what you are?
- 42:22Speaker 4: You are a coach. Until you prove it. You're a coach.
- 42:26Speaker 4: You're a head coach.
- 42:27Speaker 3: And the head coach is in this window, and you
- 42:29Speaker 3: don't get to get out of the side of that
- 42:30Speaker 3: window because you Deion, because you play football.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Go back and play pro. Go back and play pro football.
- 42:37Speaker 4: If that's what you want, you want that kind of money,
- 42:40Speaker 4: you want that kind of respect, go play. Yeah, man.
- 42:42Speaker 5: I just think it's one of them situations in which,
- 42:45Speaker 5: you know, it was a lot of hype.
- 42:47Speaker 4: The rappers ain't on the sidelines no more.
- 42:50Speaker 5: Ain't nobody coming to, you know, it's not little Gilly
- 42:52Speaker 5: and little Wayne going to Colorado to check out the games.
- 42:57Speaker 5: And it's just one of them situations where I think,
- 42:59Speaker 5: you know, you came in with a talent pool. And
- 43:02Speaker 5: now you ain't got the talent pool, and it's hard
- 43:04Speaker 5: to recruit at Colorado. You don't have the money. Nobody's
- 43:08Speaker 5: coming because it's you? Yeah, nobody's coming because it's you
- 43:10Speaker 5: no more. And now, to your point, you a coach now.
- 43:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 43:14Speaker 4: And that's it. And not a winning one.
- 43:18Speaker 3: And look, I've been through that whole structure. And until
- 43:25Speaker 3: you realize, like, you can say you think you can coach,
- 43:29Speaker 3: and you might think you can coach.
- 43:33Speaker 4: Coaching doesn't show up unless the numbers show up. Yeah.
- 43:36Speaker 5: And I think, too, I know at my time coaching,
- 43:40Speaker 5: one thing that I had to learn fast is that
- 43:43Speaker 5: I had to learn how little I knew. Even, you know,
- 43:46Speaker 5: I was, again, I just coached high school, middle school.
- 43:49Speaker 5: And even though I had played at the collegiate level,
- 43:52Speaker 5: I think, you know, I had to go back. It
- 43:54Speaker 5: was so much I had to learn, not only just
- 43:56Speaker 5: about X's and O's, But I had to learn to
- 43:59Speaker 5: manage personalities.
- 44:00Speaker 7: Yep.
- 44:00Speaker 4: And that's tough.
- 44:02Speaker 5: And I had to learn to control my personality and
- 44:05Speaker 5: to control my emotions and to communicate effectively. And to
- 44:08Speaker 5: your point, as we were just talking about with the
- 44:10Speaker 5: young men, you know, each generation is different and how
- 44:15Speaker 5: they communicate is different maybe than the generation that you
- 44:17Speaker 5: grew up in. So it's so much to coach and Again,
- 44:21Speaker 5: inside the X's and O's and outside of the X's
- 44:24Speaker 5: and O's. And not to mention, if you are a
- 44:26Speaker 5: head coach, part of your duties and responsibility is to
- 44:30Speaker 5: be a figurehead for the program. So that means you
- 44:32Speaker 5: got to go out and do the speaking engagements. You
- 44:34Speaker 5: got to raise the money. You got to snob with
- 44:37Speaker 5: the alumni. You got to do all that.
- 44:39Speaker 4: Yeah. And sometimes you.
- 44:41Speaker 3: You didn't have anything to do with the offense other
- 44:45Speaker 3: than you telling me this is what you're going to
- 44:47Speaker 3: try to do.
- 44:48Speaker 4: And I say, okay, we can roll with that. You know,
- 44:51Speaker 4: try it out.
- 44:54Speaker 3: At the end of the day, you're blamed for everything.
- 44:58Speaker 3: And I'm not saying.
- 44:59Speaker 4: That that's wrong. It is right. Because if you choose
- 45:02Speaker 4: to be the head, then you choose to get your
- 45:05Speaker 4: head cut off.
- 45:07Speaker 7: Well, don't you also need to learn– at a certain point,
- 45:10Speaker 7: you just got to learn when to shut up. Yeah.
- 45:12Speaker 4: I mean, it's like when you're big time and.
- 45:14Speaker 7: You got all the talent pool around you, great. Get
- 45:17Speaker 7: out in the media. Hey, look how good we are.
- 45:19Speaker 7: And then if you got a bad year, just go
- 45:22Speaker 7: back to your office because you're just drawing attention to yourself.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Yes, and I think that's a hard thing for Deion.
- 45:28Speaker 3: One, because he can't pass up the media because he
- 45:32Speaker 3: feels like there's something he can say that's going to be, quote,
- 45:35Speaker 3: maybe meaningful, funny, funny.
- 45:38Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 45:39Speaker 3: But at this point in time, I don't think that
- 45:43Speaker 3: the media is on his positive side. And now you
- 45:47Speaker 3: can't run. Now you can't run. You got to keep
- 45:51Speaker 3: showing up like you were showing up before.
- 45:53Speaker 4: And it may just be a reality sitting.
- 45:54Speaker 5: And again, I think also for somebody like Deion, it
- 45:57Speaker 5: may be hard to say, hey, man, I might have
- 46:00Speaker 5: to go to these coaching clinics and learn. I might
- 46:02Speaker 5: have to go sit up under this coach. I might
- 46:05Speaker 5: have to go to this coach and really sit down
- 46:07Speaker 5: with him for a week and really learn and really
- 46:10Speaker 5: sit down and soak all that game up. It may
- 46:12Speaker 5: be hard for him to humble himself to that degree.
- 46:15Speaker 5: Can you go and just be the DB coach?
- 46:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:19Speaker 3: And teach the DBs some of the things that you
- 46:22Speaker 3: used to do based off of what the system's going
- 46:25Speaker 3: to be because you don't get to pick.
- 46:26Speaker 4: The system now.
- 46:27Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 46:28Speaker 4: So now, you play man-to-man, they're playing zone. Can you
- 46:31Speaker 4: teach the zone? Yeah.
- 46:33Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's another part of coaching, too, is just
- 46:35Speaker 5: being a flat-out teacher. If you ever look at, like,
- 46:37Speaker 5: those Nick Saban documentaries, and he has a show out now,
- 46:40Speaker 5: he was so detailed. I mean, it was just minute details.
- 46:43Speaker 5: I mean, to just, to the way you, you know,
- 46:46Speaker 5: wearing your socks to the size of the grass, and
- 46:49Speaker 5: it was just, everything was just down to the millimeter. Yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 4: And I think that's what it is.
- 46:55Speaker 7: And again.
- 46:57Speaker 5: For somebody like Deion, who's probably a little bit more
- 47:00Speaker 5: big picture, coaching can be difficult because it's all about
- 47:05Speaker 5: those little minor details.
- 47:08Speaker 4: You're right.
- 47:08Speaker 3: And all that he's looking at is at the end result.
- 47:12Speaker 3: His expectation is the end result of winning. And winning
- 47:16Speaker 3: not only because of my team. but winning because it's me,
- 47:20Speaker 3: it's Deion. I'm the guy who's here and we're going
- 47:23Speaker 3: to win. If I'm here, we're going to win. And
- 47:26Speaker 3: I could see that being part of the meeting with
- 47:28Speaker 3: the players. And when you ain't winning, that don't work.
- 47:35Speaker 7: I'm curious what both of you think on this. Do
- 47:37Speaker 7: you think the media is tougher on college coaches than professional?
- 47:42Speaker 7: The reason I ask, Bill Belichick, I mean, dude, won
- 47:47Speaker 7: how many Super Bowls when he was at New England?
- 47:49Speaker 7: I feel like the media doesn't give two you-know-whats about
- 47:53Speaker 7: him now that he's coaching college. It's like, oh, Super Bowls, whatever.
- 47:56Speaker 7: Your team sucks.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:59Speaker 4: I'll say this.
- 48:00Speaker 3: I think if you're coaching in the professional ranks, nobody's there.
- 48:07Speaker 3: The only person, the only media that's really worried about
- 48:10Speaker 3: that is the media that's in that city or state.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Okay, yeah.
- 48:15Speaker 3: But the Nationals all over the collegiate level. No matter
- 48:21Speaker 3: what team you're on, no matter what coach you're coaching
- 48:24Speaker 3: anywhere in the country, the media is going to be
- 48:28Speaker 3: on you because you're the head coach of a college.
- 48:31Speaker 3: And like I said, it's just different at the next level.
- 48:34Speaker 5: And I think at the collegiate level, to your point,
- 48:37Speaker 5: I would agree they probably are a little tougher on
- 48:40Speaker 5: coaches because at the collegiate level, you pick everything.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Yes.
- 48:44Speaker 5: So you have full control of the program where if
- 48:46Speaker 5: you're a head coach of the NFL, I think they
- 48:49Speaker 5: allot you just a little bit of grace because you
- 48:51Speaker 5: don't necessarily pick the players. You got a GM who
- 48:54Speaker 5: is kind of in the way of that process.
- 48:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:56Speaker 5: So sometimes you got to just coach with what you get. And,
- 48:59Speaker 5: you know, you don't have full control over maybe the
- 49:01Speaker 5: coaching hires all the time. So there's a little bit of,
- 49:04Speaker 5: you know, things in which we're as opposed to college.
- 49:07Speaker 4: You literally coach. got carte blanche over everything. You're the GM,
- 49:13Speaker 4: you're a mini AD.
- 49:14Speaker 5: Particularly if you're talking about a football, excuse me, a
- 49:18Speaker 5: program like football where you have so many moving parts.
- 49:20Speaker 5: So you're at least a mini AD even within that confines.
- 49:26Speaker 3: And I think a lot of coaches, specifically me, I'll
- 49:30Speaker 3: speak to, at least for me, going into coaching, not
- 49:35Speaker 3: fully aware of that whole structure that all of a
- 49:39Speaker 3: sudden now I am in charge of. Or I have
- 49:42Speaker 3: to find somebody to be in charge of it to
- 49:45Speaker 3: do it who might not know how to do it either.
- 49:48Speaker 4: But I want somebody I trust. I want somebody I know.
- 49:52Speaker 3: And really, I think in that situation, it's just a really,
- 49:56Speaker 3: really difficult. I think coaching as a whole is really,
- 50:00Speaker 3: really a difficult situation no matter really what level it's at.
- 50:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree.
- 50:06Speaker 3: All right, well, ladies and gentlemen, we'll get out of here,
- 50:09Speaker 3: and we will be back again next week. Thank you.
