- 0:00Speaker 1: Texas Longbarns head coach Steve Sarkejhan And this comes way
- 0:04Speaker 1: of his Thursday media availability, his final media appearance before
- 0:09Speaker 1: Texas takes on Clemson, and the latest updates on Isaiah
- 0:14Speaker 1: Bond and Kelvin Banks as they have been banged up.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Of course, Calvin Banks injured against A and M did
- 0:19Speaker 2: not play against Georgia. Isaiah Bond re injured against Georgia.
- 0:22Speaker 2: What is their status heading into tomorrow's game. Yeah, I'll
- 0:25Speaker 2: touch on Isaiah as well with that. They're both improving,
- 0:27Speaker 2: which is which is you know great for us? You know,
- 0:30Speaker 2: they're both showing great progress.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Kelvin, I think, very similar to Quinn again, decided to
- 0:38Speaker 3: come here when we weren't we weren't a back to back,
- 0:41Speaker 3: you know, college football playoff team. You know, we weren't
- 0:43Speaker 3: competing for conference championships. And he saw he saw something
- 0:49Speaker 3: that we were doing right. And you know, whether that's
- 0:52Speaker 3: the relationships between myself and coach Flood or some of
- 0:55Speaker 3: the other guys in his recruiting class, but but there
- 0:57Speaker 3: was something there and he chose to come here when
- 1:00Speaker 3: we were at five and seventeen. And the fact that
- 1:04Speaker 3: you know, he was not a midyear player. We had
- 1:06Speaker 3: signed seven offensive linemen in that class, six of them
- 1:09Speaker 3: were mid years.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Kelvin was the one that was not. But then he's.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Turning around, starting as a true freshman, and his second
- 1:16Speaker 3: career starts against Alabama and he's blocking two top ten
- 1:19Speaker 3: picks and Will Anderson and Dallas Turner. I just think
- 1:22Speaker 3: speaks to the volume of the type of competitor he is,
- 1:27Speaker 3: the calming demeanor that he has in some of the
- 1:30Speaker 3: most stressful moments, and not only that who he's been
- 1:34Speaker 3: on the field, but what he's gone through off the
- 1:37Speaker 3: field with his mother and her being sick, and and
- 1:41Speaker 3: his ability to stay kind of even keeled and focused
- 1:44Speaker 3: and still improve and play at a high level.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Just been super impressed with him.
- 1:49Speaker 3: And the fact that the guy and back to back
- 1:51Speaker 3: days wins the Lombardi and the Outland Trophy, I think
- 1:55Speaker 3: is more than well deserving for him. And you know
- 1:57Speaker 3: what a legacy he's left here at the University of Texas.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, the second half that question was also what was
- 2:03Speaker 2: the impact that Kelvin Banks has had on Texas during
- 2:05Speaker 2: his time here?
- 2:06Speaker 1: And you heard sarka a lude to it.
- 2:08Speaker 2: This past season, he was named to the Lombardi Award
- 2:11Speaker 2: the best lineman in college football, also the Outland Trophy
- 2:14Speaker 2: the best in teering lineman and all of college football.
- 2:16Speaker 2: He's going to be a first round draft pick, might
- 2:18Speaker 2: be top ten, top fifteen, top twenty, for sure. Huge
- 2:22Speaker 2: impact in the last two years, maybe three. He hadn't
- 2:27Speaker 2: really had to worry about the left side of the
- 2:30Speaker 2: offensive line because you knew Calvin Banks had it under control.
- 2:34Speaker 2: You mentioned Isaiah Bond, you heard start talk about it again.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Another follow up question asking about Isaiah Bond. What's his
- 2:40Speaker 2: status and also the impact Bond has on the field
- 2:43Speaker 2: when he's out there, whether or not he's injured or
- 2:46Speaker 2: one hundred percent.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I think ib Obviously the speed factor is the impact
- 2:50Speaker 3: that he has on the game. You know, he's a
- 2:53Speaker 3: guy that can catch a bubble screen and take at
- 2:56Speaker 3: the distance, and you have to account for that. He's
- 2:58Speaker 3: a guy that can catch a crossing route and create
- 3:02Speaker 3: an explosive, get a reverse, creat an explosive, not to
- 3:05Speaker 3: mention all the deep shots down the field, So you
- 3:07Speaker 3: have to be aware of him and where he's at,
- 3:09Speaker 3: and so we're obviously much more dynamic. You know, when
- 3:14Speaker 3: he's on the field, and when he's not, you know,
- 3:17Speaker 3: to find in different ways to create some of those
- 3:19Speaker 3: to offset some of the things that we don't get
- 3:21Speaker 3: when he's there. That's the challenge from a coaching staff perspective,
- 3:25Speaker 3: right of make sure we're putting the right people in
- 3:27Speaker 3: the right spot. So optimistic that he'll be able to
- 3:30Speaker 3: go Saturday, but again that you know, time always tells,
- 3:33Speaker 3: especially with the injury he's got now.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Bond was a huge part of this offense first half
- 3:38Speaker 1: of the year.
- 3:40Speaker 2: One hundred and three yards against UTSA, seventy five against ULM,
- 3:43Speaker 2: seventy four against Psissippi State. Did not have a game
- 3:46Speaker 2: under fifth the yards in the first five games of
- 3:48Speaker 2: the season. Oklahoma happens one catch five yards, has the
- 3:51Speaker 2: ankle injury, tried to play through it. Against Georgia only
- 3:55Speaker 2: a two catch to eleven yards. You could tell he
- 3:56Speaker 2: was not even close to hundred percent. Comes back, you knows,
- 4:00Speaker 2: gets the bye week, takes a week off.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Gainst. Florida looked pretty good, right. He had that forty four.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yard rush on that play where there was about eight
- 4:08Speaker 2: different fakes, you know, the captured Twitter and social media.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Three catch fifty five yards looked.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Pretty good Arkansas four catches forty eight yards, but at
- 4:18Speaker 2: some point I forget it was a Arkansas gamer Kentucky
- 4:20Speaker 2: or during the week reinjured himself again. In the last
- 4:24Speaker 2: three games, he's had three catches for forty nine yards.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I don't I think he had a three yard rush
- 4:31Speaker 2: against A and M. I don't don't know how many
- 4:33Speaker 2: targets he had. He's not been the same receiver since.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And I think it's been a huge part of why
- 4:36Speaker 2: Texas offense has struggled so far and has struggled inside
- 4:41Speaker 2: the red zone. More from Sark here, and he was
- 4:45Speaker 2: asked about this offense and specifically in the third quarter,
- 4:50Speaker 2: Texas been out scored in the third quarter by a
- 4:53Speaker 2: large amount. I want to say the number is forty
- 4:56Speaker 2: five to thirteen, forty nine to thirteen.
- 4:59Speaker 1: It's a lot. And so this is from Thomas Jones,
- 5:01Speaker 1: Austin American statesman. I believe.
- 5:02Speaker 2: But he asked Sark is this a coincidence, coincidence or
- 5:05Speaker 2: what has he seen from the third quarter in Texas
- 5:08Speaker 2: being outscored by so much?
- 5:09Speaker 3: No, I mean, I don't, I don't know if it's coincidental.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I mean, I think at the end of the day,
- 5:14Speaker 3: we try to get in the locker room, and some
- 5:16Speaker 3: of those games, you know, i'd like to think we
- 5:18Speaker 3: had a decent lead at halftime, but but you know,
- 5:22Speaker 3: we got to get in the locker room, and we've
- 5:24Speaker 3: got to do a better job of conveying to the
- 5:26Speaker 3: players what we're going to try to do in the
- 5:27Speaker 3: third quarter, and then we got to go out and
- 5:30Speaker 3: execute those things. And and for for whatever reason, whether
- 5:35Speaker 3: it's us not putting together a great plan, our players
- 5:38Speaker 3: not not kind of understanding what we're trying to do,
- 5:41Speaker 3: or maybe our mental intensity isn't where it's supposed to be,
- 5:44Speaker 3: all those things have to elevate. You know, as I
- 5:46Speaker 3: touched on last week, you know, everybody in our organization
- 5:49Speaker 3: has to improve for this next four games if we're
- 5:52Speaker 3: fortunate to play four games for us to to get
- 5:55Speaker 3: there January twentieth, and we've all got work to do.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And that's that's one area we've identified we've got to
- 6:01Speaker 3: we've got to improve in that aspect of our game,
- 6:05Speaker 3: and that's coaches, players included. We've got to improve that
- 6:08Speaker 3: aspect of it. And again we've emphasized it, and i'd
- 6:12Speaker 3: like to think generally you get what you emphasize, so
- 6:14Speaker 3: hopefully we see some better results there.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Circling back to Calvin Banks obviously named the All American
- 6:22Speaker 2: Shoddy Barron also on that list. This is from Roger
- 6:24Speaker 2: Wallace asking, start, what does it say about this program
- 6:28Speaker 2: for those two guys to come into Texas, to be developed,
- 6:31Speaker 2: to be named All Americans, to have these postseason awards,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and also what it means about where the state of
- 6:36Speaker 2: the program is in general after that five win season
- 6:39Speaker 2: a few years ago to now back to back college
- 6:41Speaker 2: football playoff earths.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Well, I love it because they're two completely different stories. Right.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Here's here's a guy that we inherited in the program,
- 6:51Speaker 3: and John A.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Baron and who's.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Played multiple positions for US, who not only has matured
- 6:58Speaker 3: and become and developed as a great player for US,
- 7:00Speaker 3: but he's matured so much off the field, you know,
- 7:04Speaker 3: becoming a team leader and all that he does, and
- 7:06Speaker 3: a multiple position player and really kind of one of
- 7:10Speaker 3: the voices of the team, you know, and he's earned that.
- 7:13Speaker 3: And then you flip the coin over and here's Kelvin Banks,
- 7:16Speaker 3: a five star left tackle with all the expectations and
- 7:21Speaker 3: he does it in three years. And so two different players,
- 7:24Speaker 3: two different developments of players. But I think that speaks
- 7:27Speaker 3: volumes to the people in our organization that everybody's going
- 7:31Speaker 3: to get developed when you come here. Everybody's gonna, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 3: develop not only as a football player, but as a
- 7:36Speaker 3: person and as a student. And that's something I think
- 7:39Speaker 3: that I take a lot of pride in you. He
- 7:41Speaker 3: just went from talking about Michael Taff who was to
- 7:43Speaker 3: walk on, to John A. Barron, who he inherited when
- 7:46Speaker 3: we got here, has played multiple positions, to Kelvin Banks,
- 7:49Speaker 3: who was a five star, all of which I think
- 7:51Speaker 3: nobody could argue. All those guys developed not only as
- 7:55Speaker 3: players but as people. And so that's the thing as
- 7:57Speaker 3: a coach that you that you take the most pride in.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Continue to talk Texas Clemson up nexas Eric Henry from
