- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding
- 0:05Speaker 1: exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand
- 0:10Speaker 1: is on the seashore. 1 Kings 4.29 Heavenly Father, I
- 0:16Speaker 1: thank you that you are constantly available for me to
- 0:19Speaker 1: draw from the well of your wisdom. Like Solomon in
- 0:23Speaker 1: today's reading of 1 Kings, I ask that you give
- 0:26Speaker 1: me divine understanding in all matters that pertain to life, business,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and relationships. Because your understanding is greater than mine, as
- 0:37Speaker 1: I tap into this new power source, I'm excited because
- 0:41Speaker 1: I will understand situations like you do. I can now
- 0:46Speaker 1: have access to divine understanding in the matters of business,
- 0:50Speaker 1: even if I'm new to the industry. Increase the understanding
- 0:54Speaker 1: in my life when it comes to leading others and
- 0:57Speaker 1: in the matters of giving advice. May my speech be
- 1:01Speaker 1: seasoned and well-placed. May my actions be calculative and precise.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Thank you, Lord, that because I have opened my heart
- 1:11Speaker 1: to you and your ways, I will never be without
- 1:14Speaker 1: understanding as long as I rest and rely on you.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I declare that I am stepping into the greatest season
- 1:23Speaker 1: of understanding and wisdom in my life. In Jesus' name.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Amen.

- 1:51Speaker 3: Solomon's God-Given Wisdom In our last story, the great reign
- 1:56Speaker 3: of David came to a close. David ruled over Israel
- 2:00Speaker 3: for forty years. and blessed the entire nation with his bravery, leadership,
- 2:06Speaker 3: and love for God. Now it was Solomon's duty to
- 2:09Speaker 3: rule over Israel with wisdom, mercy, and justice. As his
- 2:14Speaker 3: first act as king, Solomon took care of those who
- 2:17Speaker 3: were loyal to his father and dealt justly with those
- 2:21Speaker 3: who betrayed him. Now we watch the heart of Solomon
- 2:24Speaker 3: connected to the heart of God in a unique way.
- 2:27Speaker 3: His desire for wisdom over riches and influence sparks God's
- 2:31Speaker 3: loyalty and blessing. Inspired by the book of 1 Kings
- 2:35Speaker 3: and 2 Chronicles.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:43Speaker 2: Bible in a Year. In our last time together, we
- 2:46Speaker 2: heard how David left final words of encouragement and instruction
- 2:49Speaker 2: for Solomon before he died. After David's death, Solomon set
- 2:54Speaker 2: about dealing with those who had betrayed his father and
- 2:57Speaker 2: him and blessing those who proved loyal to Israel and
- 3:00Speaker 2: to its leader. Already we caught glimpses of a man
- 3:04Speaker 2: wise beyond his years, but that was just the beginning.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Today we'll learn how Solomon pursued godly wisdom, choosing it
- 3:12Speaker 2: over wealth and status. God is pleased by the heart
- 3:16Speaker 2: of the young king and blesses him in a very
- 3:19Speaker 2: special way. Solomon's wisdom will become something of renown throughout
- 3:23Speaker 2: his kingdom as he listens to his people and discerns
- 3:26Speaker 2: right from wrong and good from evil. So, let's listen
- 3:30Speaker 2: now to today's scripture.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Solomon sat in the palace courtyard of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
- 3:38Speaker 3: The hot Egyptian sun beat down on his back, causing
- 3:41Speaker 3: a slight drip of sweat to fall down his neck.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Solomon was there for a very specific purpose— He knew
- 3:48Speaker 3: that in order for Israel to thrive, it could not
- 3:51Speaker 3: just battle other countries. Some alliances had to be made
- 3:55Speaker 3: for the preservation of their culture. So in the heat
- 3:58Speaker 3: of day in the palace of Pharaoh, Solomon married one
- 4:01Speaker 3: of Pharaoh's daughters as a symbol of political union. Trade
- 4:04Speaker 3: with Egypt would prove useful, since Solomon had big plans
- 4:08Speaker 3: to build a great temple for the Lord, just as
- 4:10Speaker 3: his father David dreamed of. Solomon returned from Egypt, ecstatic
- 4:15Speaker 3: at his new union with Egypt. There was something redemptive
- 4:19Speaker 3: about an alliance with past enemies. Solomon felt a sense
- 4:22Speaker 3: of purpose in creating allies instead of enemies. He made
- 4:26Speaker 3: his way to Gibeon to worship God and get guidance
- 4:29Speaker 3: and direction for next steps. He was still a young
- 4:32Speaker 3: man and incredibly inexperienced. He knew that answers were found
- 4:37Speaker 3: at the altar of God. The sun was beginning to
- 4:40Speaker 3: set and Solomon sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings to the Lord.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Music and incense filled the room as Solomon breathed out
- 4:49Speaker 3: sweet praises to God. A smile fell upon his face
- 4:53Speaker 3: and he returned home. The night was calm and there
- 4:56Speaker 3: was no breeze or sound in all of Israel. The
- 4:59Speaker 3: stars shone brightly and Solomon was deep asleep in his bed.
- 5:04Speaker 3: He shifted slightly in his bed, experiencing a dream more
- 5:07Speaker 3: vivid and real than any other. Solomon stood before the Lord.
- 5:12Speaker 3: He could not see him, but knew he was there.
- 5:15Speaker 3: What do you want most? Solomon heard the Lord ask.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Ask and it will be given to you. Solomon paused
- 5:22Speaker 3: for a moment. He looked up and said, You showed
- 5:26Speaker 3: my father faithful love since the beginning. He was honest
- 5:29Speaker 3: and truly faithful to you, and you have continued your
- 5:32Speaker 3: love for him by allowing me to sit on this throne.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Solomon began to choke up, trying to capture the right words. Now,
- 5:41Speaker 3: my God, you have made me king. and I am
- 5:44Speaker 3: like a little child stumbling about. But you have placed
- 5:48Speaker 3: me in the midst of your chosen people. They are
- 5:51Speaker 3: a nation so great and so vast that they cannot
- 5:54Speaker 3: be fully counted. Solomon paused again, this time kneeling before
- 5:58Speaker 3: God with his hands spread open wide. Please give me
- 6:02Speaker 3: an understanding heart and wisdom to govern your people well.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Allow me to know the true difference between right and wrong,
- 6:10Speaker 3: good and evil, curses and blessings. There is no man
- 6:13Speaker 3: that can govern these people without you by their side.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Solomon finished his request and sat at the feet of
- 6:21Speaker 3: God for a long time. The Lord was very pleased
- 6:24Speaker 3: with Solomon's request. He could have asked for riches, success, power,
- 6:30Speaker 3: or victory over enemies. However, Solomon simply asked for a
- 6:34Speaker 3: discerning and loving heart. God replied to Solomon saying, Because
- 6:39Speaker 3: you have asked for wisdom instead of a long life
- 6:42Speaker 3: for wealth, I will give you all you have asked
- 6:44Speaker 3: for and more. The joy of God was palpable, and
- 6:49Speaker 3: Solomon could feel it welling up in his chest. I
- 6:52Speaker 3: will give you a wise heart, and no other ruler
- 6:55Speaker 3: in history will match your mind. I will also give
- 6:58Speaker 3: you more than you have asked for with riches, fame,
- 7:01Speaker 3: and prosperity. All that I ask is that you follow
- 7:04Speaker 3: me with your whole heart as your father did. And
- 7:08Speaker 3: before Solomon could look up at the Lord, he awoke
- 7:11Speaker 3: from his dream. He rose out of his bed and
- 7:13Speaker 3: worshipped God alongside the governors of Israel. Soon after, Solomon
- 7:18Speaker 3: was sitting in his court listening to the needs of
- 7:20Speaker 3: the people. Solomon could feel God already filling his heart
- 7:24Speaker 3: with wisdom and compassion. That day, two prostitutes came to
- 7:29Speaker 3: the king to have their argument settled. One of the
- 7:31Speaker 3: women was holding a newborn child, while the other scowled
- 7:35Speaker 3: at her. Solomon could already sense the situation before it unfolded.
- 7:40Speaker 3: The woman not holding the child spoke, saying, Please, my lord,
- 7:44Speaker 3: this woman I live with gave birth to a child
- 7:46Speaker 3: the same week. However, her baby died in the middle
- 7:49Speaker 3: of the night when she rolled over it. She got
- 7:51Speaker 3: up in the middle of the night while I was
- 7:53Speaker 3: asleep and took my child and left the dead child
- 7:56Speaker 3: lying in my arms. Tears began to stream down the
- 7:59Speaker 3: woman's face. When I tried to nurse the child, he
- 8:02Speaker 3: was dead. When I looked closely, I found that it
- 8:05Speaker 3: was not my child but hers. She stole my baby.
- 8:09Speaker 3: The other woman snapped instantly and said, Of course it
- 8:12Speaker 3: was your son. The living child is mine. No, the
- 8:17Speaker 3: other woman yelled. The two of them argued back and
- 8:20Speaker 3: forth before Solomon. He stood there quietly, wondering how he
- 8:25Speaker 3: could truly know who the child belonged to. Solomon had
- 8:28Speaker 3: an idea to discern the hearts of the mothers, but
- 8:31Speaker 3: it would risk him looking like a heartless animal. Nevertheless,
- 8:35Speaker 3: it was the only way to judge the hearts of
- 8:37Speaker 3: these two women. Bring me a sword. Solomon gestured to
- 8:41Speaker 3: his servant. The servant brought him a longsword, and Solomon
- 8:45Speaker 3: stepped closer to the two women and the child. Since
- 8:48Speaker 3: neither of you can agree, I will cut this living
- 8:51Speaker 3: child into two pieces. As Solomon spoke these words, he
- 8:55Speaker 3: looked closely into the eyes of each woman. Of course
- 8:58Speaker 3: he would not harm the child, but he desired to
- 9:01Speaker 3: see the immediate reactions of both women. He only had
- 9:04Speaker 3: a moment to read them both. As the words were
- 9:07Speaker 3: leaving Solomon's lips, one of the women shouted, No, no, no,
- 9:11Speaker 3: my lord, give her the child if it means it
- 9:13Speaker 3: gets to live. Please do not kill him. That sentence
- 9:17Speaker 3: was all Solomon needed to discern who the real mother was,
- 9:20Speaker 3: for the other woman seemed to be more okay with
- 9:23Speaker 3: the idea of killing the child. Of course I will
- 9:26Speaker 3: not kill the child, Solomon said. Give the baby to
- 9:30Speaker 3: this woman who wants him to live. She is clearly
- 9:32Speaker 3: the real mother.
- 9:34Speaker 2: The women left.
- 9:36Speaker 3: And their story reached the ears of every Israelite. They
- 9:39Speaker 3: knew that Solomon was a king able to discern truth
- 9:42Speaker 3: and justice. Slowly, under Solomon's rule, a great deal of
- 9:47Speaker 3: peace and wealth spread across the land.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Today's passage begins in the distant but familiar land of Egypt.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Solomon had traveled to the neighboring country with an important mission.
- 10:03Speaker 2: He knew that Israel was not meant to be isolated
- 10:06Speaker 2: and constantly at war with the rest of the world.
- 10:09Speaker 2: God's plan for Israel was for them to bless other
- 10:12Speaker 2: nations also. And what better way to bless another nation
- 10:16Speaker 2: and build peace than with an alliance with a former enemy?
- 10:20Speaker 2: When he returned home, Solomon went to the altar of
- 10:23Speaker 2: God to offer sacrifices. David had taught him in word
- 10:27Speaker 2: and deed that he should honor God above all and
- 10:30Speaker 2: walk with him. And so Solomon went often to God's altar.
- 10:35Speaker 2: One night, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and
- 10:38Speaker 2: asked Solomon what he should give him. There were no conditions, stipulations,
- 10:42Speaker 2: or boundaries to the request. God wanted to know what
- 10:46Speaker 2: Solomon desired most. Solomon's response is remarkable. He first acknowledged
- 10:53Speaker 2: God's greatness, his love, and his steadfastness to David and
- 10:56Speaker 2: to himself. Then he acknowledged his own shortcomings, his youth
- 11:01Speaker 2: and inexperience, and the monumental task before him. Only then
- 11:05Speaker 2: did Solomon make his request. Listen to what he said
- 11:09Speaker 2: in 1 Kings 3, verse 9. Give your servant, therefore,
- 11:14Speaker 2: an understanding mind to govern your people, Solomon did not
- 11:25Speaker 2: ask to be strong and mighty like his father or
- 11:27Speaker 2: rich and famous as many kings sought to become. He
- 11:31Speaker 2: did not ask for a long life or great influence
- 11:34Speaker 2: and power. Solomon asked for a discerning mind and a
- 11:38Speaker 2: heart sensitive to God's guidance. It's no wonder that later
- 11:42Speaker 2: in his life, this man would pin words of advice
- 11:45Speaker 2: for his young men to seek after wisdom like silver
- 11:48Speaker 2: and hidden treasure. He understood that all the wealth, power,
- 11:52Speaker 2: and health and fame in the world would be worthless
- 11:55Speaker 2: without the wisdom to use it properly for God's purposes.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Because he asked for wisdom rather than the other things
- 12:02Speaker 2: one might have expected, God promised to grant him wisdom
- 12:06Speaker 2: unsurpassed in history by any other. but he would also
- 12:10Speaker 2: bless him with wealth and influence and so much more.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And if Solomon would walk in God's ways as his
- 12:16Speaker 2: father David had, God would give him a long and
- 12:19Speaker 2: prosperous life. When Solomon awoke from his dream, he went
- 12:23Speaker 2: to Jerusalem immediately to the Ark of the Covenant, where
- 12:26Speaker 2: he worshiped God with offerings and then prepared a feast
- 12:29Speaker 2: for his servants. It didn't take long for Solomon's wisdom
- 12:33Speaker 2: to be put to the test. One day, two women
- 12:36Speaker 2: appeared before him with an argument. One woman claimed the
- 12:40Speaker 2: other had swapped the dead child for her own living
- 12:43Speaker 2: son and was trying to steal the baby. The other
- 12:45Speaker 2: woman called her a liar. Solomon pondered a solution, and
- 12:50Speaker 2: what he came up with was as shocking as it
- 12:53Speaker 2: was brilliant. He told them that since they could not agree,
- 12:57Speaker 2: he would simply cut the child in half and each
- 13:01Speaker 2: could have one piece. One mother quickly begged him to
- 13:05Speaker 2: spare the baby, to simply give it to the other
- 13:07Speaker 2: woman lest he kill a child. The other woman, however,
- 13:11Speaker 2: insisted that they follow Solomon's proposal and split the child
- 13:15Speaker 2: in two. At that moment, Solomon knew the heart of
- 13:18Speaker 2: a mother would rather lose her child to another than
- 13:22Speaker 2: see him killed. So he ruled in favor of the
- 13:25Speaker 2: first mother. Word of this ruling spread throughout Israel and
- 13:29Speaker 2: the people knew they had a king who could discern
- 13:31Speaker 2: right from wrong and good from evil. This was the
- 13:34Speaker 2: man God chose to rule his people and, as we'll
- 13:38Speaker 2: soon find out, to build his temple also. So let's pray.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Dear God, we thank you for today's scripture, as always,
- 13:47Speaker 2: for your word, which is light and life to our lives.
- 13:51Speaker 2: We pray, O God, that we would always seek your wisdom.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Beyond earthly things, may we ask for eternal things. that
- 13:58Speaker 2: we would know your heart, your will, and discern your
- 14:01Speaker 2: ways for our lives. Thank you for your wisdom, God,
- 14:05Speaker 2: in all that we do. Amen. Thank you for listening
