- 0:27host. Pastor David. Welcome to the Voices of
- 0:32Life, a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm
- 0:35Pastor David. Today's Did You Know takes us to
- 0:39August 13th, a date where history speaks with
- 0:43a sober voice. A day marked by courage, by loss,
- 0:47and by faith that refused to disappear, even
- 0:50when the world around it seemed to collapse.
- 0:53Three stories, three moments. Three different
- 0:56kinds of persecution. And one message that rises
- 1:01above all of them, standing for one's faith when
- 1:05the pressure is real and the cost is high. So
- 1:10in the summer of 1878, the city of Memphis, Tennessee,
- 1:15was struck by one of the deadliest epidemics
- 1:18in American history. Yellow fever swept through
- 1:21the streets like a silent storm. Homes emptied,
- 1:25businesses closed, entire neighborhoods fled
- 1:29overnight. On August 13th, the first recorded
- 1:33fatality appeared. Kate Bionda, a restaurant
- 1:37owner whose death signaled the beginning of a
- 1:40tragedy that would claim more than 5 ,000 lives
- 1:43and leave Memphis nearly abandoned. Fear was
- 1:47everywhere, but so was faith. Neighbors cared
- 1:51for one another even when it meant risking their
- 1:54own lives. Churches opened their doors when hospitals
- 1:57overflowed. Pastors, priests, and volunteers
- 2:00walked into homes others refused to enter. In
- 2:04a city drowning in sickness, faith became the
- 2:07only medicine many people had left. And in the
- 2:11middle of that suffering, the love of Christ
- 2:13became visible in the hands of ordinary people
- 2:16who refused to abandon their neighbors. Then
- 2:20let's move up to 1961. On August 13, 1961, another
- 2:26kind of crisis unfolded. Not a disease, but a
- 2:30division. In the early hours of the morning,
- 2:34East Germany began sealing off East Berlin and
- 2:39the border with West Berlin. Families woke up
- 2:43to find soldiers in the streets, barbed wire
- 2:46blocking sidewalks, and armed guards standing
- 2:49between loved ones. Within days, the temporary
- 2:52barriers became concrete. Concrete became a wall,
- 2:57and the wall became a symbol of fear, control,
- 3:01and separation. But even behind the wall, faith
- 3:07persisted. Believers gathered quietly in homes.
- 3:10They prayed for unity. They prayed for courage.
- 3:13They prayed for the day when the wall would fall
- 3:17and freedom would return. And decades later,
- 3:21those prayers were answered. The Berlin Wall
- 3:25did not fall because concrete weakened. It fell
- 3:28because hope refused to die. August 13th also
- 3:33commemorates Saints Poutin and Hippolytus, two
- 3:37Christian leaders caught in the storms of persecution
- 3:40under the Roman Empire. Potian was a pope. Hippolytus
- 3:47was a priest. They disagreed sharply on matters
- 3:50of leadership and doctrine. But persecution was
- 3:55a way of revealing what truly matters. Both men
- 3:58were arrested. Both men were exiled. Both suffered.
- 4:03Both died for their faith. And in the final chapter
- 4:07of their lives, they reconciled. showing the
- 4:11world that faith can unite even those once divided.
- 4:15Their story reminds us that persecution is not
- 4:19just external pressure. Sometimes it is the pressure
- 4:23to remain faithful, even when relationships fracture
- 4:26and unity feels impossible. Pontian and Hippolytus
- 4:32teach us that standing for one's faith includes
- 4:37standing for forgiveness. standing for reconciliation,
- 4:41and standing for the unity Christ prayed for.
- 4:46From Memphis to Berlin to ancient Rome, August
- 4:5213th reminds us that persecution takes many forms,
- 4:56disease, division, and disbelief. But faith endures,
- 5:01faith stands, and faith heals. Standing for one's
- 5:06faith under persecution is not about defiance.
- 5:09It is about devotion. It is about believing that
- 5:12light still shines even when the world grows
- 5:16dark. It is about trusting that God is present
- 5:19in the epidemic, in the wall, and in the exile.
- 5:24If today's episode encouraged you, share it with
