- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists.
- 0:07Speaker 1: This week on the show they See life and Bring
- 0:11Speaker 1: it to us.
- 0:12Speaker 2: That's right. This week we're talking to documentarians.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Documentarians of all types. We gather around a table to
- 0:19Speaker 3: talk process of storytelling and showing the truth.
- 0:23Speaker 4: So let's turn on the camera towards ourselves for a change,
- 0:28Speaker 4: and let's think about what that does.
- 0:31Speaker 5: It's time to get introspective in a real world. So
- 0:35Speaker 5: let's buckle up and listen.
- 0:37Speaker 2: In Sha boo boop, tensil down.
- 0:40Speaker 6: Wow, this is so great.
- 0:42Speaker 5: I never saw myself like being in a room like
- 0:44Speaker 5: this with all of you guys. This is actually really
- 0:47Speaker 5: cool for.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Me, really wonderful to be here with all of you,
- 0:51Speaker 1: really really nice. I think your work is really fine.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It's really fantastic, and it's really exciting to be here together.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Incredible company we are amongst it feels like a table.
- 1:07Speaker 6: Of legends exactly.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Well, I would love to get to know you guys
- 1:12Speaker 5: on the mic. So do you want to start?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Sure?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yeah, my name is Ron Wold. I have I don't
- 1:23Speaker 1: know six or seven oscars not counting, but I'm a
- 1:26Speaker 1: documentary's been doing it for a long time. I'm a
- 1:29Speaker 1: historian and my new documentary, The History of Posters in
- 1:34Speaker 1: twelve parts, is coming out pretty soon. So I really
- 1:39Speaker 1: I dived into when posters began and where they went,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and I'm really excited about it.
- 1:47Speaker 6: Wow, that sounds mega interesting. Maybe. Thanks, that's so cool man.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Thanks. Yeah, I think it's riveting and fascinating because they
- 1:55Speaker 2: hang on the wall.
- 1:56Speaker 1: But why that is the question, and we answer it
- 2:01Speaker 1: in a bit. You know, we don't give it all away,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but we definitely pause it.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Why.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Sure, you shouldn't be answering questions, you should be asking them.
- 2:11Speaker 4: And you should always pause it. I believe that is
- 2:14Speaker 4: one of the cornerstones of documentary filmmaking is to posit something.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Pause, pause it, pause the TV pause it all.
- 2:25Speaker 7: To pousit a question.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Everyone, rise your hand if you posit things in your documentaries.
- 2:31Speaker 8: I pause all the time. I say, pause that right there,
- 2:34Speaker 8: pause it?
- 2:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so if I'm following the logic, I
- 2:38Speaker 5: feel like I know what it means totally.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Wow.
- 2:40Speaker 8: Hey guys, Uh, my name is Leam Michaels.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I'm really happy to be here.
- 2:48Speaker 8: Really happy to be here.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I I think I'm here for my best award winning work.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I did a little Netflix series called Sales, where we
- 3:00Speaker 3: followed middle school sale teams to their championships all the
- 3:05Speaker 3: way in Costa Rica.
- 3:07Speaker 8: It was incredible, changed my life. We did two seasons.
- 3:10Speaker 3: We're now onto three seasons, our third season, I should say,
- 3:15Speaker 3: and I'm just I'm I'm I'm grateful to be an artist,
- 3:21Speaker 3: but to be overcome by art.
- 3:22Speaker 6: Wow. So it's like a reality TV doc kind of thing.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Yeah, we just expose these kids for who they are
- 3:29Speaker 3: and what they do.
- 3:30Speaker 6: The kid's bad.
- 3:32Speaker 3: No, no, no, I would say we expose in a
- 3:36Speaker 3: positive sense. I'm exposing these children for their heroicism, their ambition,
- 3:42Speaker 3: and their souls.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I have to admit.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I have to admit Sales is a guilty pleasure for
- 3:47Speaker 1: me and my lady Kitty.
- 3:48Speaker 2: We love we love Sales. We watched it all the time.
- 3:52Speaker 8: Thank you so much. I yeah, I went up. I came.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I come from the reality TV world, I should say that,
- 3:59Speaker 3: And I stumbled into documentarianism.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Yeah that's great.
- 4:03Speaker 5: I love the belief of documentarianism. I think it's a
- 4:06Speaker 5: fantastic belief for sure.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Ray the altar of documentarianism.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 4:15Speaker 7: My name is Augusto Spoons.
- 4:20Speaker 4: I am a documentary filmmaker recently nominated for a Critics
- 4:25Speaker 4: Choice Award for my documentary spoons It, in in which
- 4:33Speaker 4: this documentary I placed the camera betwixt myself and my soul.
- 4:39Speaker 4: I get into a glass box, lock myself inside, and
- 4:43Speaker 4: sit there for sixty days. My documentary is an examination
- 4:48Speaker 4: of what happens to a man when you do that.
- 4:52Speaker 5: Okay, have you showered since? Because I was gonna say
- 4:55Speaker 5: something it reeks over here.
- 4:57Speaker 4: No, I will not shower, and will I win the
- 5:00Speaker 4: Critics Choice Award.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I also think that might also be a wave of me.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I've been sailing with the kids. I think we all break.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Yeah, that is true.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Flies die in my editing, Bay, I'm gonna be honest
- 5:18Speaker 1: with you. I mean, I am a stinky guy. As documentarians,
- 5:21Speaker 1: we spend a lot of time just staring at the screen.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Yeah, totally.
- 5:25Speaker 5: I'm just trying to You're looking through footage after footage
- 5:28Speaker 5: after footage, like hours of it.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Yeah. I'll be in my casket watching footage.
- 5:34Speaker 1: So, Augusto, so would you consider your documentary interpretive or
- 5:39Speaker 1: performance art or what part of it makes it a documentary?
- 5:44Speaker 7: I would say that it is the truth.
- 5:48Speaker 4: What is a documentary if not displaying things as they are?
- 5:53Speaker 4: And in my documentary, I show myself breaking myself to
- 5:58Speaker 4: the limits of what a man can endure. Sixty days,
- 6:03Speaker 4: glass cage filled to the brim with bats?
- 6:07Speaker 6: What happens to a man you did not have? That
- 6:15Speaker 6: was I think?
- 6:16Speaker 1: So would you consider it a situation that altered your experience?
- 6:20Speaker 2: Would it have been different without the bats?
- 6:22Speaker 8: That sounds like something a studio asked you to add
- 6:24Speaker 8: on because the pitch wasn't good enough.
- 6:26Speaker 4: You know, I remember the bats being an afterthought. It
- 6:31Speaker 4: wasn't the primary thing I set out to do. But
- 6:34Speaker 4: sometimes you begin a documentary, and you begin a project
- 6:38Speaker 4: and then slowly things are added in you stumble upon discoveries.
- 6:44Speaker 5: That's insane because that is just like my documentary.
- 6:48Speaker 7: Actually, please tell us.
- 6:50Speaker 5: So what's up, guys. I'm Kyler Biler. I am a
- 6:54Speaker 5: surfer and I love shooting surf docs. But my recent
- 6:58Speaker 5: doc got out of control. It's called The Surfer Murderer.
- 7:04Speaker 8: I saw it at Tribeca.
- 7:05Speaker 6: Thank you? Did you like it?
- 7:07Speaker 8: I absolutely loved it?
- 7:09Speaker 6: Thank you so much. So, Yeah, it's crazy.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Basically what happened was we were down kind of traveling
- 7:16Speaker 5: all over Thailand and like all looking for the best
- 7:18Speaker 5: wave and it was going to be called that one wave.
- 7:22Speaker 5: But then one of my bros got fucking murdered and
- 7:26Speaker 5: now we're just trying to figure out what happened. It's crazy, And.
- 7:30Speaker 2: How do you know he was murdered versus drowned.
- 7:32Speaker 5: No, he was definitely murdered, like he was on a
- 7:35Speaker 5: surfboard and the next minute gone.
- 7:38Speaker 7: He was murdered in the sea on a surfboard.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Yes, he was murdered in the sea on a surfboard.
- 7:44Speaker 5: And we know he got killed by somebody, so there
- 7:48Speaker 5: was a stab wounder, he was gone. All we found
- 7:54Speaker 5: was his hand, you did not have. All we could
- 7:58Speaker 5: find was his hand. So he got murdered bad. Something
- 8:02Speaker 5: went down. So we're trying to figure it out. And
- 8:04Speaker 5: that's the beauty of the documentary because it's both filming
- 8:08Speaker 5: looking filming surfing, but also looking past at all the
- 8:13Speaker 5: footage that I've had over like the last like twelve
- 8:16Speaker 5: years surfing with my bros, and we're trying to piece
- 8:19Speaker 5: together which one of us killed them.
- 8:20Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 3: No, that's what I thought was so interesting about watching
- 8:23Speaker 3: your movie was that the surfer murderer title is implying
- 8:27Speaker 3: that there's another surfer who killed your surfing exactly.
- 8:32Speaker 8: That was the craziest part to me.
- 8:34Speaker 6: Yeah, it's not called the surfer murder.
- 8:36Speaker 5: And we had a long debate meaning with the guys,
- 8:38Speaker 5: because it's not the surfer murder, it's the surfer murderer, Like,
- 8:43Speaker 5: would it not.
- 8:43Speaker 7: Be more accurate to call it surfer murdered?
- 8:48Speaker 6: I love that. I wish we thought of that.
- 8:50Speaker 5: We just did not have the brain capacity to put
- 8:53Speaker 5: that together totally totally.
- 8:55Speaker 6: If you work with what you got, you work with
- 8:56Speaker 6: what you got.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I want to point out something you said, just to
- 9:00Speaker 1: ask more questions about it. You said that you have
- 9:04Speaker 1: to figure out which one of you is the murderer.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so so you know that one of you did it.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Yeah, well we all suspect, you know, It's what it's
- 9:14Speaker 5: a situation. There's only a couple of us out there.
- 9:18Speaker 5: One of us had to do it, and so basically
- 9:21Speaker 5: it's us looking back in a big room figure it
- 9:23Speaker 5: out the pieces, you know. Sometimes, like I caught up,
- 9:26Speaker 5: like one of the most iconic scenes I'm getting rave
- 9:29Speaker 5: reviews about I'm hearing is my buddy eric Off. He
- 9:33Speaker 5: was talking to Tout and tut is the guy that
- 9:36Speaker 5: unfortunately got murdered, and eric Off says like, dude, you
- 9:39Speaker 5: fucking stole my wave out there. And this was six
- 9:42Speaker 5: years before Tuty got killed. So we use that and
- 9:46Speaker 5: we were all like, Eric Goff, what was that? And
- 9:48Speaker 5: he was like, dude, I don't know. Maybe I did
- 9:51Speaker 5: kill him. So it's riveting. It's very confusing, and.
- 9:55Speaker 7: Every man believes he could have killed him.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Every man understands that they have the capacity to kill him.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Yes, it was so interesting scene I Trybecca because the
- 10:05Speaker 3: whole true crime community was there and they were like,
- 10:08Speaker 3: this doesn't feel like true crime.
- 10:10Speaker 6: It feels like that.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Must be difficult. I love to talk a little bit
- 10:13Speaker 2: about true crime.
- 10:14Speaker 1: In this world because it has engulfed documentaries.
- 10:18Speaker 2: For me, somebody who does long form.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Historical topics, it's definitely not as sexy. How do we
- 10:24Speaker 1: feel about true crime?
- 10:25Speaker 5: Must really tough for you, you know, because I feel
- 10:29Speaker 5: like documentaries for a long time were boring history films,
- 10:32Speaker 5: And not that that's bad. I love boredom, like boredom
- 10:36Speaker 5: is a beautiful thing for me, but like that must
- 10:39Speaker 5: rock your freaking world.
- 10:40Speaker 1: It doesn't rock my world. Boredom is subjective. I don't think.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I don't think the they're not boring.
- 10:46Speaker 6: They're really but that's good.
- 10:47Speaker 1: I like details. They're exciting to me when I watch
- 10:51Speaker 1: a documentary. When I watch a nine hour documentary about
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know, the history of the Korean War, I am screaming, shouting, cheering.
- 11:04Speaker 2: For me, that is the most exciting thing of my life.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I am enthralled, and on the edse of my seat,
- 11:09Speaker 1: I'm biting my nails.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I am exhausted.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I sleep for a full day after watching because I
- 11:16Speaker 1: am so spent because everything else in my life is
- 11:18Speaker 1: boring compared to those.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Everything else in my life is.
- 11:21Speaker 7: Do you do during the days.
- 11:24Speaker 2: During the days, I live in my house in Baker's Field.
- 11:28Speaker 6: You said you had a lady lady My no.
- 11:30Speaker 2: No, her name is Kitty. She's my wife. I call
- 11:32Speaker 2: it my lady.
- 11:33Speaker 8: Oh, I thought it was a cat.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I did say my lady kitty. But but she is
- 11:37Speaker 1: my lady and her name is Kitty.
- 11:38Speaker 8: Got it.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, So me and my lady Kitty. We like
- 11:41Speaker 1: to sit in our house in Baker's Field.
- 11:44Speaker 2: We like to grow our grass garden, and.
- 11:50Speaker 1: We like to make different types of aolis based on
- 11:54Speaker 1: things that we can find in the store and see if.
- 12:00Speaker 8: Oh no, Kyler, Biler, Kyler Biler, Kyler, Yes.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Ma'am, I won't be intimidated by yawns. You think you're
- 12:09Speaker 2: the first person to do it.
- 12:10Speaker 6: I love sleep. I love sleep.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Answer me, do you think you're the first person to
- 12:15Speaker 2: do that to me?
- 12:16Speaker 6: No?
- 12:18Speaker 2: What I like isn't boring. What you like is boring?
- 12:23Speaker 6: Dude?
- 12:24Speaker 5: I wow, I like Michael Bay. Okay, is that boring?
- 12:29Speaker 1: I can tell you everything that happens in a Bichael
- 12:31Speaker 1: Bay movie based on the first thirty seconds.
- 12:33Speaker 2: That's boring to me.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I think I can say the same thing about your
- 12:35Speaker 3: poster movie. Really that a guy invented posters and he
- 12:42Speaker 3: just stup brnted him out.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I don't want to cannibalize us, guys. I don't want
- 12:46Speaker 1: to rip each other out.
- 12:47Speaker 6: If anyone was go ahead, this feels just like my movie.
- 12:52Speaker 1: There's no way you could have predicted in the sixth
- 12:55Speaker 1: hour of my poster documentary when the guy that was
- 12:58Speaker 1: making posters ended up on the posters.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Could you predicted that? And that's just that's one of
- 13:06Speaker 2: the twenty five storylines I follow.
- 13:08Speaker 7: That was a twist I was surprised by.
- 13:11Speaker 4: I also would like to compliment your documentary was such
- 13:15Speaker 4: an exquisite study of boredom, of what happens when the
- 13:19Speaker 4: viewer is exposed to boredom, of what goes on. It
- 13:25Speaker 4: was such a statement I will say about the capacity
- 13:28Speaker 4: of man.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Yes, I got so much shit done when I watched Posters.
- 13:35Speaker 3: You know that area under your couch that you never clean.
- 13:38Speaker 3: I cleaned under my couch that part of the area
- 13:41Speaker 3: I also know. But I was watching your film and
- 13:43Speaker 3: I was saying, I think it's the simplicity of life. Like,
- 13:46Speaker 3: listen to me, I'm working on Netflix shit, and anytime
- 13:49Speaker 3: I think it's done, somebody else comes in there and goes,
- 13:51Speaker 3: let's add more music on top of the music, and
- 13:53Speaker 3: I go, do we need more?
- 13:55Speaker 8: Do we need more?
- 13:56Speaker 3: And they go, add another montage to the kids setting
- 13:59Speaker 3: the sails, add another montage, and I go, come on, guys,
- 14:03Speaker 3: it's about being simple. And when I was watching your
- 14:05Speaker 3: poster film, I was like, God, I had nothing else
- 14:09Speaker 3: to do.
- 14:10Speaker 8: But sit around and think about what I could do
- 14:12Speaker 8: in the room while watching it.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Well, I can't tell if you're mocking meat. But I
- 14:16Speaker 2: don't envy you.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I don't envy you because I get to write all
- 14:19Speaker 1: the music for my documentaries. I use my key tar,
- 14:21Speaker 1: and I just go to town and I.
- 14:23Speaker 6: Have with you.
- 14:25Speaker 8: I find it very fascinating.
- 14:26Speaker 6: How simple.
- 14:27Speaker 8: Okay, cataoli's are you and the wife cooking up?
- 14:30Speaker 2: We tried one? We did catoli?
- 14:35Speaker 8: Are you just making sauces? What makes it an ale?
- 14:38Speaker 1: Well, the difference between a mayonnaise and aoli is a
- 14:41Speaker 1: consistency I believe in, and also just the capacity for flavor.
- 14:45Speaker 4: It does it not require eggs to qualify as an aoli?
- 14:50Speaker 5: I thought it was the garlic. See this feels like
- 14:52Speaker 5: when you're a documentary now.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I never could touch aoli's. It's too complex.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I couldn't get I couldn't get the concept in a
- 15:00Speaker 1: suitable time frame.
- 15:01Speaker 2: It would be too long.
- 15:03Speaker 6: Wow.
- 15:03Speaker 5: Well, that's actually leads me to an interesting question about
- 15:06Speaker 5: like the length of things, because like, like we're dealing
- 15:09Speaker 5: with a lot of time and how to make a
- 15:11Speaker 5: story out of all these things, like with sales, like
- 15:14Speaker 5: you guys are dealing with a lot of things like
- 15:16Speaker 5: how do you choose what story to follow?
- 15:18Speaker 6: And what what things to do.
- 15:20Speaker 8: Yeah, well, I'm a part of a machine.
- 15:25Speaker 3: These kids they take they take the boat by the horns.
- 15:29Speaker 6: So their children on a boat.
- 15:31Speaker 8: So they do competitive sailing.
- 15:34Speaker 5: I thought they were selling things. I thought that was
- 15:37Speaker 5: the crust. Yeah, I thought they You were following kids
- 15:42Speaker 5: as they sail. They sell things like crazy.
- 15:47Speaker 3: You mix up sail and sell, and you have a
- 15:49Speaker 3: film called Server Murderer.
- 15:52Speaker 8: Anyway, so we, yeah, we follow competitive sailing.
- 15:56Speaker 3: And I don't know about you, guys, because sometimes I'm
- 15:58Speaker 3: like you, you follow that man that made the poster,
- 16:00Speaker 3: but you are the you are the center of your
- 16:02Speaker 3: doc I follow the story. If I'm following a year
- 16:06Speaker 3: of competitive sailing at Saint Mark's Elementary School, that isn't interesting.
- 16:13Speaker 8: That's two years of footage down the drain.
- 16:15Speaker 2: But I have to say I've again. Me and my
- 16:18Speaker 2: lady Kitty, we watch sales and it is so interesting.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I can't believe some of that stuff happens. The fact
- 16:24Speaker 2: that the long lost sister comes back after being lost
- 16:29Speaker 2: in the accident and one of them breaks their femur.
- 16:32Speaker 2: There's so much trauma and Netflix.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Only devoted about forty five seconds to that storyline.
- 16:39Speaker 8: Oh yeah, when she broke her femur.
- 16:40Speaker 3: That took a whole semester of drama and we winned
- 16:44Speaker 3: it down to about forty five seconds.
- 16:46Speaker 8: You're right.
- 16:47Speaker 3: It was just like she broke her femur out in sea,
- 16:50Speaker 3: and boy was that. That's footage on footage on we
- 16:54Speaker 3: had we had because when you're at sea, you have
- 16:56Speaker 3: it and you have something go down, you have a
- 16:58Speaker 3: lot of taxiing boats in and we got all of
- 17:01Speaker 3: that footage and that was just down the drain.
- 17:04Speaker 6: Wow.
- 17:05Speaker 5: Really, that's crazy. How does she break her femur out there?
- 17:09Speaker 8: Oh, she fell on her ankle.
- 17:12Speaker 6: Sorry, she fell on her ankle and broke her fur.
- 17:15Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 17:15Speaker 3: No, it's a complex sailing term, which means she was
- 17:20Speaker 3: holding the she was holding the anchor and when you
- 17:26Speaker 3: drop the anchor and you hurt yourself, you you call
- 17:30Speaker 3: it you fell on your ankle.
- 17:31Speaker 6: So she got caught in the anchor.
- 17:37Speaker 8: No, she ye similar to that.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Yes, you act like this is something that we wouldn't understand,
- 17:44Speaker 1: but it feels like we could understand that.
- 17:46Speaker 2: She just let us in what way? So did William.
- 17:51Speaker 5: I'm just trying to figure out how this so if
- 17:54Speaker 5: I could try to explain it. She fell on her ankle,
- 17:57Speaker 5: which is a sailing the term for get caught up
- 18:00Speaker 5: in the anchor and being plunged deep into the ocean,
- 18:04Speaker 5: so deep that the pressure breaks a femur or something else.
- 18:07Speaker 8: She rose to the top. The only thing that happened.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and get we only have forty five seconds of
- 18:14Speaker 3: that footage, but god, when she slowly rose up and
- 18:17Speaker 3: they brought her back to life. Her ex boyfriend, who
- 18:19Speaker 3: was on the same sailing team, had to give her
- 18:21Speaker 3: mouth to mouth, which was also incredibly cinematic.
- 18:25Speaker 8: But uh, she lived to tell the tale.
- 18:28Speaker 6: How old are these kids? Oh?
- 18:29Speaker 8: We do elementary through high school.
- 18:31Speaker 6: Oh wow, you know what I love too.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I love when you followed the lunch lady. It was
- 18:36Speaker 1: interesting because I didn't know how it quite connected, but
- 18:39Speaker 1: it made me realize, well, these kids already lush every day,
- 18:42Speaker 1: so technically it was connected. And she was interesting.
- 18:45Speaker 8: No, yes, she's great. She's on Dancing with the Stars now.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I saw her. I'm vutting for her.
- 18:48Speaker 8: Yeah, good, you better be.
- 18:49Speaker 7: She has such an incredible whimsy about her.
- 18:53Speaker 2: How she dances, she is really amazing.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I really, really, really really hope she wins over Nia
- 18:59Speaker 1: from Dance Moms.
- 19:02Speaker 8: Yeah, No, she did a great job. Dorothy is her name.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Yes, she's amazing.
- 19:07Speaker 3: She Who would have thought sandwiches like that don't get
- 19:11Speaker 3: soggy when you're out at sea with kids?
- 19:13Speaker 6: Come on, that's insane.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Actually, I did want to ask, so you said a
- 19:16Speaker 1: lot of footage? How many hours of footage did we
- 19:18Speaker 1: all have for the documentary?
- 19:20Speaker 2: We just shot?
- 19:20Speaker 6: Wow?
- 19:21Speaker 8: Oh let's go around, let's go round.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Well, I had sixty days of footage plus ten hours
- 19:27Speaker 4: of interviews with myself. I will say I lost about
- 19:31Speaker 4: twenty days worth of footage because some of the bats
- 19:35Speaker 4: escaped the box and covered the camera completely for twenty days.
- 19:41Speaker 3: So they escaped the box and they covered the camera
- 19:44Speaker 3: like they like, They fluttered around.
- 19:47Speaker 7: It, yeah constantly.
- 19:51Speaker 6: That'll kill your sound. Yeah, I don't know how you
- 19:54Speaker 6: did the regular sound. Were you just doing camera audio sound?
- 19:58Speaker 8: You're poor son of a bitch. Sound guy.
- 20:00Speaker 4: I had a sound man holding the boom for sixty days.
- 20:06Speaker 8: He for sure had to have a setup. He did
- 20:09Speaker 8: not have to hold that thing.
- 20:10Speaker 4: No, when a man is pushed to the brink, he
- 20:13Speaker 4: can do incredible things. Mothers can lift cars, fathers can
- 20:18Speaker 4: lift cars, and a boom guy can hold the boom.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Do you want to give him a special shout out
- 20:24Speaker 2: say his name?
- 20:25Speaker 7: Absolutely not.
- 20:29Speaker 4: I think it's clear in the documentary that we can
- 20:32Speaker 4: feel a sound man being pushed to the brink.
- 20:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Well, I'll say I loved your doc and I didn't
- 20:39Speaker 5: know how you chose what you chose because it felt
- 20:41Speaker 5: like you were cutting basically at the most interesting part,
- 20:45Speaker 5: like it was about to be interesting, and then you'd
- 20:47Speaker 5: cut away to the next day or something.
- 20:49Speaker 2: You know.
- 20:49Speaker 7: Yes, I am a bit of a tease.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I like to take people into what they believe will
- 20:56Speaker 4: happen and then subvert.
- 20:58Speaker 7: It by cutting away.
- 21:00Speaker 4: There are I believe, fifteen hour segments of me trimming
- 21:05Speaker 4: my fingernails and only a.
- 21:08Speaker 7: Few of me learning how to drive.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Wow.
- 21:14Speaker 3: I mean, I'm just dying to know about your life,
- 21:17Speaker 3: Like what does your every day look like? Because you
- 21:20Speaker 3: seem like you thrive off of pushing people to the brink.
- 21:23Speaker 8: It sounds like, yes.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Every morning I wake up six am, I head to
- 21:30Speaker 4: the coffee.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Room that I have oh coffee, the kitchen.
- 21:35Speaker 7: It is a wondrous place.
- 21:37Speaker 4: There's a sink and an oven and a box that
- 21:40Speaker 4: keeps my food very cold.
- 21:43Speaker 6: It sounds like a kitchen.
- 21:44Speaker 7: It is the room where my coffee is made.
- 21:48Speaker 4: And then I have a sip of the coffee and
- 21:51Speaker 4: I retire to my chamber where I sleep the rest
- 21:55Speaker 4: of the day.
- 21:57Speaker 7: I awake again at three in the morning, and I'm right.
- 22:02Speaker 8: You have your coffee, you go to bed.
- 22:06Speaker 6: So you wake up at six ams.
- 22:07Speaker 3: You make a cup of coffee, you go to bed,
- 22:11Speaker 3: one zip, so's to not disturb the slumber that must follow.
- 22:15Speaker 4: This is, of course, during the winter months. During the summer,
- 22:19Speaker 4: it is the midnight sun and I do not sleep.
- 22:22Speaker 7: I live on an island off of Norway.
- 22:25Speaker 6: Whoa, whoa, whoa. What's that called.
- 22:31Speaker 7: Little Norway?
- 22:34Speaker 8: This makes me really interested in what everyone's day to
- 22:37Speaker 8: day is.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Oh yeah, sure, Kyler, Biler, Kyler, Well, yeah, I would
- 22:41Speaker 5: love to go into it. So basically, wake up early,
- 22:46Speaker 5: you know, drink some coffee, and then it's hit the surf.
- 22:49Speaker 5: It's hit the surf as quick as possible. Then after
- 22:53Speaker 5: hitting the surf, you're out there and you're just praising everything.
- 22:58Speaker 5: You come back in, get a smoothie, a sandwich.
- 23:01Speaker 7: Do you believe in one god or more?
- 23:03Speaker 5: Oh me, I love the idea of a lot of
- 23:06Speaker 5: gods for me. I think it's so cool, like the
- 23:09Speaker 5: idea like water God. Oh my gosh, you're the god
- 23:12Speaker 5: of the water, you control all the seas. Fish god, whoa,
- 23:16Speaker 5: you're the god of a fish. You're literally the god
- 23:19Speaker 5: of a fish.
- 23:19Speaker 8: Do you believe in multiple gods?
- 23:22Speaker 4: I believe that man is his own god, and it's
- 23:26Speaker 4: something that I believe comes through very clearly in my work.
- 23:31Speaker 6: Yeah. I didn't get that as much. I didn't get it.
- 23:33Speaker 5: Just looked like a man struggling in a glass box
- 23:36Speaker 5: sometimes learning how to drive.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I would say, I think the bat's one. I think
- 23:39Speaker 2: the bat's one.
- 23:40Speaker 8: Oh, I mean it was a clear message that the
- 23:42Speaker 8: bats one.
- 23:43Speaker 6: I thought I thought.
- 23:44Speaker 5: I took away like, wow, bats are kind of stronger
- 23:47Speaker 5: than I thought.
- 23:48Speaker 4: You like shit at the end of it, Do you
- 23:51Speaker 4: perhaps think that as a filmmaker, that is what I
- 23:53Speaker 4: wanted you to think?
- 23:55Speaker 6: Well, can you tell.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Us you want us to think that the baths beat you?
- 23:58Speaker 7: Do you perhaps think that as a filmmaker?
- 24:02Speaker 4: I made you think you thought that, okay, but later
- 24:06Speaker 4: you would examine that maybe you did not.
- 24:09Speaker 8: Now I don't like this. I don't like now you
- 24:12Speaker 8: don't I don't like this.
- 24:14Speaker 7: I don't want to.
- 24:18Speaker 3: I don't like one a documentarian is making me think
- 24:21Speaker 3: something and then telling me to not think it. I
- 24:23Speaker 3: just want you to just lay it out there. I
- 24:25Speaker 3: don't want any manipulation happening. The facts are the facts.
- 24:28Speaker 8: The bats wan.
- 24:31Speaker 6: That is true. The facts are the facts.
- 24:33Speaker 5: It was a clear ending that you even said at
- 24:35Speaker 5: the end the bat's won. I thought that's what we
- 24:37Speaker 5: were supposed to walk away with.
- 24:38Speaker 4: And that is the pedestrian interpretation of my work.
- 24:41Speaker 6: I'm not a pedestrian. I am an ocean man. I'm
- 24:45Speaker 6: a surfer.
- 24:46Speaker 8: Jesus Christ.
- 24:47Speaker 6: I'm not a man who would ever walk a lot.
- 24:50Speaker 7: Do you think you killed your friend?
- 24:53Speaker 5: No?
- 24:53Speaker 2: What? Maybe?
- 24:54Speaker 6: Though I don't remember.
- 24:56Speaker 8: Wait, you don't want to be known for walking?
- 24:58Speaker 6: I hate that stick. It's a gross of what I'm
- 25:03Speaker 6: a surfer.
- 25:04Speaker 5: I'm not a pedestrian, okay, and I hate that word.
- 25:08Speaker 6: And if we could just stop, that'd be great.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Every man must cross the street. It is a fool's endeavor.
- 25:15Speaker 6: To unless you have a long board. Do you ever
- 25:18Speaker 6: think about that?
- 25:19Speaker 7: Do you stand on your longboard as you cross the streets?
- 25:22Speaker 6: Sometimes, but mostly I'm bending over?
- 25:25Speaker 2: You don't pretend I'm on the way.
- 25:26Speaker 1: This is difficult for me because I agree with Augusto,
- 25:30Speaker 1: but I can't ever say that. You know what I mean,
- 25:33Speaker 1: because Kyler is clearly wrong. But I would never want
- 25:36Speaker 1: to be on the same campus him.
- 25:37Speaker 8: You fear what you see.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I am holding a mirror up to your very inner being,
- 25:42Speaker 4: and you fear that.
- 25:44Speaker 7: Why do you fear that?
- 25:47Speaker 8: I agree? I agree with Augusto, but I'd never tell him.
- 25:50Speaker 8: I tell him.
- 25:52Speaker 5: And to address the rumors that I was the one
- 25:54Speaker 5: that killed my friend again, I don't know.
- 25:57Speaker 3: There are no rumors that you guys cannot believe. There
- 26:02Speaker 3: are rumors that he trapped.
- 26:04Speaker 5: All I'm saying is if you guys saw it, you
- 26:06Speaker 5: might maybe think I did it.
- 26:09Speaker 6: And I was convinced a little bit too. It was confusing.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Can you give us the facts? Who are the suspects?
- 26:14Speaker 1: Who is who do you think could have done it?
- 26:17Speaker 1: And I'm just curious?
- 26:18Speaker 5: Okay, So well, okay, So it's my friend I mentioned before, Fart.
- 26:23Speaker 5: It's Eric gong Fart Tuti is the guy who died.
- 26:28Speaker 6: He is my bro.
- 26:29Speaker 5: We know each other for a long time. So Eric
- 26:31Speaker 5: gong Fart, Jacob Bumpy, he's the guy who can frickin
- 26:36Speaker 5: shred but also has a dark side. And then this
- 26:39Speaker 5: girl named Kurf and she's like a crazy surf chick
- 26:43Speaker 5: and she's great. And then the only other thing that
- 26:46Speaker 5: we could come up with was there was something swimming
- 26:48Speaker 5: in the water nearby, but mostly were one of those five.
- 26:52Speaker 5: So we were trying to figure out by watching the
- 26:55Speaker 5: footage that I had, and like kind of an a
- 26:57Speaker 5: round table, like who did this? And people came in
- 27:00Speaker 5: with a lot of thoughts.
- 27:01Speaker 3: It was so crazy, the part in your doc where
- 27:03Speaker 3: you make everyone say their alibi and they're like in
- 27:06Speaker 3: the water.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Yeah, it was crazy because like I say, like, I say,
- 27:10Speaker 5: like my albi. So I was standing in the water.
- 27:13Speaker 5: I was in the water. I looked up with this guy.
- 27:15Speaker 5: I saw two D take the white wave of his
- 27:17Speaker 5: life and then I don't remember what happened. The next thing,
- 27:22Speaker 5: I know, two D's gone, and I just got yelled
- 27:24Speaker 5: at because Eric Gon was like, dude, you weren't looking up.
- 27:28Speaker 6: You weren't looking up, you were looking to the side.
- 27:31Speaker 5: I remember that as that big thing passed under you
- 27:34Speaker 5: and you said, there's a big thing in the water.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Do you perhaps remember hearing a large chomp sound, not as.
- 27:40Speaker 6: Much a chomp but a thrash. For sure.
- 27:43Speaker 5: I heard something. There was something, and we all suspected
- 27:46Speaker 5: that was the killer.
- 27:48Speaker 1: My assistant was telling me there's a large online community
- 27:51Speaker 1: that they're doing something called the shark theory.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I heard about this.
- 27:54Speaker 6: No, and we hate that.
- 27:56Speaker 3: I don't even think it's an online thing. I think
- 27:58Speaker 3: it's just like a known thing.
- 27:59Speaker 7: Like I believe it was the police's opinion.
- 28:03Speaker 5: It was an online thing spread by the police, the
- 28:07Speaker 5: Long Beach Police.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Can I ask you a really forward question please? At
- 28:11Speaker 3: this point, I'm like, what about the truth these people
- 28:14Speaker 3: at this table right, Yeah, I'm just gonna ask, do
- 28:17Speaker 3: you find that the true crime documentarianism community is so
- 28:24Speaker 3: so competitive that you took your story and made it
- 28:28Speaker 3: more complicated than it actually is so people could try
- 28:31Speaker 3: to put clues together?
- 28:33Speaker 8: Because I will say, what's.
- 28:34Speaker 3: A huge part of crime docs is people trying to
- 28:38Speaker 3: solve it. And it feels like you're forcing me to
- 28:41Speaker 3: solve something that doesn't need to be solved.
- 28:45Speaker 5: What I don't understand a fucking word you're saying right now.
- 28:50Speaker 5: I don't understand. Are you calling me a pedestrian? I
- 28:53Speaker 5: don't walk a lot. I roll, I ride and I roll.
- 28:57Speaker 2: You know what, I.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Will say something. We'll say something in Kyler's defense. You
- 29:03Speaker 1: know that one section where you do reveal that every
- 29:06Speaker 1: single surfer was carrying a big knife.
- 29:10Speaker 2: That did throw me a little.
- 29:11Speaker 5: I should have brought that up. Yeah, so everybody had
- 29:13Speaker 5: a big knife.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Why did you guys have such big knives?
- 29:15Speaker 6: On the one you don't know what's out in the ocean.
- 29:17Speaker 6: It could be anything, right, So.
- 29:21Speaker 5: So but there everybody was mad at tut for the
- 29:26Speaker 5: night before.
- 29:27Speaker 8: What are you worried that you have to protect yourself
- 29:29Speaker 8: from when you're.
- 29:30Speaker 6: Only that night?
- 29:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I just make me say some things.
- 29:33Speaker 5: I can't think of one right now. In the water, dud,
- 29:38Speaker 5: have you read the wreath? There's like monsters and shit,
- 29:41Speaker 5: there could be anything. And I've seen giant tuna. Have
- 29:44Speaker 5: you ever seen a sunfish? A sole at Gargantuan.
- 29:49Speaker 8: Anywhere?
- 29:50Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of sunfish.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I made a documentary on nets and I filmed a
- 29:54Speaker 1: lot of sunfish getting trapped in them.
- 29:58Speaker 2: You know, nets are very versatile.
- 30:00Speaker 6: Gotta ask you.
- 30:01Speaker 3: I find that you you I've looked at your catalog
- 30:05Speaker 3: of films before this round table I did too, and
- 30:08Speaker 3: I noticed you don't act with the humans a lot.
- 30:12Speaker 8: You love things and like just like stuff.
- 30:15Speaker 2: You know who has loves things? Humans? We're surrounded by
- 30:18Speaker 2: things right now. This table is a thing. That ring
- 30:21Speaker 2: is a thing. Those earrings are things.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Humans, if not interested in each other, are interested in things.
- 30:28Speaker 2: That's all we are. There were people that like things.
- 30:31Speaker 2: We're Ariel, we're Aerial. From the little mermaid holding on hoo'sy.
- 30:35Speaker 2: What's it? That's a fork, you know what I mean?
- 30:37Speaker 2: And the fish part of her doesn't like the fork.
- 30:40Speaker 2: It's the human part of her that likes the fork.
- 30:42Speaker 6: Whoa how do you know that? Though? Well, it could
- 30:46Speaker 6: be the fish part that likes the fork.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Fishes don't like forks.
- 30:49Speaker 6: Fish.
- 30:50Speaker 5: Every fish I've seen in the ocean love shiny things.
- 30:52Speaker 7: Absurd. A fish has absolutely no use for a fork.
- 30:58Speaker 7: Aial is a.
- 30:59Speaker 5: Girl in the movie has no use for a fork either.
- 31:04Speaker 6: Okay, she's a frickin mermaid. She likes it because it's shiny.
- 31:07Speaker 4: That's because she is a girl on the inside.
- 31:12Speaker 7: She was born in the wrong body.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Guys, I don't want to come to blows here. Okay,
- 31:17Speaker 1: let's not get let's not get a breast like.
- 31:19Speaker 9: My documentary mine too.
- 31:21Speaker 6: Well.
- 31:22Speaker 5: I actually did see your trailer for your documentary. I
- 31:24Speaker 5: thought it was insane. You really when you say you
- 31:27Speaker 5: exposed these kids. Dang man, these kids were ruthless to
- 31:31Speaker 5: each other.
- 31:31Speaker 6: They were they really mean.
- 31:34Speaker 2: I was surprised how often they just dosed each other.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Yeah, they're calling swat all.
- 31:41Speaker 7: Matthew should not have been dosed in the way.
- 31:44Speaker 3: He was a huge community of bands that hate the
- 31:49Speaker 3: way Matthew was treated by the school principal.
- 31:52Speaker 5: So yeah, the principal docksed him, spread all of his
- 31:55Speaker 5: information online, and then I think your community was the
- 31:58Speaker 5: one that turned on him. The craziest scene when during
- 32:01Speaker 5: the race that one kid gets swatted and the the
- 32:05Speaker 5: the boats drive up. I thought that was a great trailer.
- 32:08Speaker 6: Yeah, I thought, thank you so much.
- 32:10Speaker 8: I appreciate it.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Well that that competition they go to in Costa Rica
- 32:13Speaker 3: is huge and you guys ever find yourself chasing a
- 32:17Speaker 3: story and you are you are in the biggest steaks
- 32:22Speaker 3: you can feel and you don't have any say in
- 32:25Speaker 3: these stakes.
- 32:26Speaker 8: You don't know what they're doing.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Like I was like, wow, it feels like the tension
- 32:30Speaker 3: is so high and I don't know what the fuck's
- 32:32Speaker 3: going on, you know what I mean?
- 32:35Speaker 2: You just couldn't understand it.
- 32:37Speaker 3: When they said she kept branking breaking her ankle, I
- 32:40Speaker 3: was like, what is that?
- 32:41Speaker 8: And they went the anchor?
- 32:44Speaker 5: Is there other any other terms? You just didn't get
- 32:46Speaker 5: because it's been three years or four years?
- 32:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I've been on sea with these kiddos for
- 32:52Speaker 3: so long and I'm barely understanding c words.
- 32:56Speaker 8: Uh, there's rang them in?
- 33:00Speaker 6: What does that mean?
- 33:01Speaker 8: Rang them in means do you want some water?
- 33:04Speaker 6: See? That doesn't add up for me.
- 33:06Speaker 2: So it's a questions.
- 33:09Speaker 6: You want some?
- 33:10Speaker 2: Sure? Do I say yes?
- 33:12Speaker 8: If you'd like?
- 33:13Speaker 2: There isn't like a sailing term for yes.
- 33:15Speaker 8: No, you say yes or no?
- 33:17Speaker 2: Okay?
- 33:17Speaker 8: Yeah, anyway, it's just crazy. These kiddo's crazy anyway.
- 33:21Speaker 6: Did you get.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Close to any of your subjects? That's the big documentary
- 33:27Speaker 1: in question. Wow it it's the line, right do you
- 33:31Speaker 1: do you step over into getting to know the people
- 33:35Speaker 1: that you're following. It's very important that you keep a partial,
- 33:39Speaker 1: impartial view.
- 33:40Speaker 6: Did you get to know the bats at all? Oh? Yeah?
- 33:42Speaker 6: Do you have any weird things?
- 33:44Speaker 4: I still maintained that the bats were a minor part
- 33:48Speaker 4: of the documentary.
- 33:49Speaker 8: Okay, so but I got to know myself very well.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Wow, Like how Well, that's an interesting question, Augusta, right,
- 33:57Speaker 1: because you're the subject, but you don't want to get
- 33:59Speaker 1: too close to this subjects.
- 34:00Speaker 2: So yeah, I do get close to yourself.
- 34:02Speaker 6: What did you learn?
- 34:03Speaker 4: I had to establish boundaries between myself. I could not
- 34:07Speaker 4: talk to myself for more than two hours a day,
- 34:12Speaker 4: or else I would be getting too close to the
- 34:14Speaker 4: subject and the movie would be compromised.
- 34:18Speaker 6: What did you do all day?
- 34:20Speaker 8: You were the lead at your movie.
- 34:22Speaker 4: If you if you examined the footage, I was sort
- 34:25Speaker 4: of pacing back and forth, singing great American show tunes.
- 34:30Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and occasionally occasionally swatting away a beat.
- 34:36Speaker 5: I feel like most of the dime you especially at
- 34:38Speaker 5: night when they would get hungry, it was a lot
- 34:41Speaker 5: of swat Also, I just cannot I have to dive deeper.
- 34:45Speaker 6: You just cut to you learning how to drive.
- 34:49Speaker 5: It was just one of the hardest cuts I've ever seen,
- 34:52Speaker 5: just by yourself in a car.
- 34:53Speaker 6: You've made a glass container out of the car. You
- 34:56Speaker 6: desperately learning how to.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Clearly in a snowy parking lot in winter.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Yes, I did escape the glass tube for just a moment,
- 35:05Speaker 4: the box became a tube, became a parking lot, became
- 35:10Speaker 4: a man learning.
- 35:12Speaker 5: So I guess, like, was the box like maybe the
- 35:16Speaker 5: perception of what yourself you thought you were.
- 35:19Speaker 7: At No, that part was a box.
- 35:23Speaker 4: The rest of the movie was me trying to figure
- 35:25Speaker 4: out who I am?
- 35:27Speaker 6: What did you figure out?
- 35:29Speaker 4: I figured out that I I'm a wonderful singer.
- 35:33Speaker 7: What a loving father.
- 35:36Speaker 6: You have kids? Oh?
- 35:37Speaker 2: I forgot.
- 35:38Speaker 8: My favorite part was when you sang don't rate on my.
- 35:41Speaker 3: Parade to get the bats out of the way in
- 35:43Speaker 3: front of the camera.
- 35:45Speaker 1: That was actually really crazy because I was just has
- 35:48Speaker 1: to be staged. Because they all slapped themselves up against
- 35:51Speaker 1: the back of the glass.
- 35:52Speaker 7: It's because they were so impressed. It was not the
- 35:56Speaker 7: smell of my mouth.
- 35:58Speaker 6: It was.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think anyone else smelling your mouth.
- 36:03Speaker 5: Yea, we were so crossed out by the smell of
- 36:07Speaker 5: your mouth they slammed up against the glass walls.
- 36:10Speaker 7: Well, I'm sorry.
- 36:11Speaker 4: I've been told by certain people at this table that
- 36:14Speaker 4: I reek so part of me suspected that the animals
- 36:18Speaker 4: were angry, did not enjoy the smell. But no, they
- 36:22Speaker 4: were just overcome by the power by the vigor of
- 36:28Speaker 4: my alto voice.
- 36:30Speaker 2: You know, you know what he sounds like. I've been
- 36:31Speaker 2: trying to figure it out.
- 36:32Speaker 1: He sounds like, uh, like one of those eight C
- 36:36Speaker 1: units or heater units in a hotel room that you
- 36:39Speaker 1: don't it just starts.
- 36:41Speaker 2: You turn it on and you're like, oh, I didn't
- 36:42Speaker 2: know it was gonna make all that noise. I'm trying
- 36:44Speaker 2: to get to sleep.
- 36:45Speaker 8: See, I was gonna say.
- 36:46Speaker 3: He sounded like you know in Hollywood, when you're walking
- 36:49Speaker 3: and it goes.
- 36:50Speaker 6: Weight that man not speak of him? Whoa.
- 36:57Speaker 4: My father recorded the weight voice on a telegram telegram.
- 37:02Speaker 7: He wrote it down, he is it off, that's your father,
- 37:06Speaker 7: and then spoken aloud. It was him, the guy at
- 37:09Speaker 7: the crosswalk that goes white and Antonio.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Yeah you did.
- 37:13Speaker 6: You did a forty part documentary about.
- 37:16Speaker 2: It on telegrams. Yeah, yes, as I learned a lot
- 37:19Speaker 2: about that. He was really really talented.
- 37:22Speaker 3: Forty part telegram doc what I used to watch to
- 37:25Speaker 3: go to sleep.
- 37:26Speaker 6: It was.
- 37:27Speaker 7: It's the only footage I have of my father.
- 37:31Speaker 2: You're not joking me, Ah, you do.
- 37:33Speaker 8: You take it as a compliment?
- 37:34Speaker 6: What's wrong joking? Why would I joke you I love sleep.
- 37:38Speaker 2: Okay, I don't understand that anyone could sleep during it.
- 37:41Speaker 2: There's so many interesting parts.
- 37:43Speaker 8: Oh yeah, you sleep after because they wind you.
- 37:46Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I thought it's just you got the most suit.
- 37:49Speaker 5: Can you just do a little excerpt of your voice
- 37:51Speaker 5: that you talk in when you do your documentaries, because
- 37:54Speaker 5: honestly just knocks me out.
- 37:56Speaker 2: Sure, yeah I could. I could as long as as
- 37:58Speaker 2: long as you guys listen to it.
- 38:00Speaker 8: Oh, will you document what happened here today?
- 38:03Speaker 2: I could do that with your voice?
- 38:04Speaker 6: Okay.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Great.
- 38:07Speaker 1: On a nice summer day, four talented documentarians walked into
- 38:14Speaker 1: a studio and they started talking about their lives. They
- 38:19Speaker 1: used their microphones, They sat on chairs, they put their
- 38:24Speaker 1: hands on tables, and they drank from glasses. They had microphones.
- 38:30Speaker 6: Okay, okay, let your turn. You know, I figured it out.
- 38:37Speaker 5: It's not your vocal tone, but it's the pauses you
- 38:40Speaker 5: take in the middle of each word.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Oh I'm not offended by that.
- 38:44Speaker 8: Okay, Okay, here's my take on what happened here today.
- 38:47Speaker 6: Oh, he's your docmandary voice.
- 38:49Speaker 8: Gega, I'm gonna document what happened today.
- 38:51Speaker 10: We four people, one dream, my life.
- 39:02Speaker 8: What's suck wi.
- 39:05Speaker 3: You Oh, the guy on the left making the posters,
- 39:10Speaker 3: the Augustus surfer murderer, the big story.
- 39:16Speaker 6: That was in a documentary at all.
- 39:18Speaker 4: That's fascinating because we never heard you narrate in the
- 39:22Speaker 4: Netflix dock and this scene is quite the eye opening experience.
- 39:28Speaker 8: That's just showing you that there's different styles. That's the
- 39:31Speaker 8: style of the Netflix docu series.
- 39:36Speaker 2: So how would you narrate today's events?
- 39:38Speaker 4: Four men enter, four men leave, changed?
- 39:43Speaker 6: The bats? The bats?
- 39:45Speaker 7: The bats. The bats don't rain on my parade?
- 39:53Speaker 6: Deep alto.
- 39:56Speaker 8: Incredible. You just love to add bats to everything you do.
- 39:59Speaker 8: But we ask about that.
- 40:00Speaker 7: I don't even remember saying that.
- 40:03Speaker 6: No it you said, all right, all right, So it's
- 40:09Speaker 6: just like my documentary. Here we go.
- 40:13Speaker 9: Imagine you are wake up and you go surfing, and
- 40:18Speaker 9: then you're invited to do a podcast and when you
- 40:23Speaker 9: show up, one person is off, but you don't know
- 40:28Speaker 9: who and it could even be you. Let's hope this
- 40:33Speaker 9: gets solved.
- 40:35Speaker 6: It's time. So yeah, that's basically, do you script it
- 40:41Speaker 6: when you do it? No, we go, we just shoot
- 40:43Speaker 6: the ship. Can I take a lot of suggestions, take
- 40:46Speaker 6: a lot of.
- 40:47Speaker 8: Guys, what's next? On your docket? What do you make it?
- 40:50Speaker 1: Well, I'm really excited to announce it. Everyone in my
- 40:52Speaker 1: discord has been asking, everyone has been clamoring for what
- 40:57Speaker 1: I could possibly be doing next.
- 41:00Speaker 2: So what's the next thing? What's the next thing? And
- 41:02Speaker 2: it's not a thing?
- 41:04Speaker 6: Oh?
- 41:06Speaker 2: A type of food?
- 41:08Speaker 6: Huh? Okay, aoli?
- 41:12Speaker 2: Garnishes.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Oh, I couldn't do it. I told you I couldn't
- 41:17Speaker 1: do it. Aoli, it's too complex. I don't know how
- 41:19Speaker 1: to cry.
- 41:20Speaker 7: Song is the garnish doc.
- 41:21Speaker 1: It's gonna be seventy five parts our each because garnishes
- 41:26Speaker 1: and we're I don't want to spoil it, but garnishes
- 41:29Speaker 1: technically go back thousands of years.
- 41:32Speaker 5: That does make sense to me. It feels like any
- 41:35Speaker 5: food would have a garnish at any point in time.
- 41:37Speaker 2: But why and how?
- 41:39Speaker 6: Because they're good?
- 41:41Speaker 2: Garnishes are good.
- 41:42Speaker 6: Yeah, garnishes.
- 41:42Speaker 1: You sound like a fourteen hundreds person. Garnishes in eighteen
- 41:46Speaker 1: hundreds reviled garnishes in the nineteen hundreds.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Parsley mostly.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Sorry, that's how I treat my wife.
- 41:58Speaker 8: I was gonna say, lady kitty must love that.
- 42:00Speaker 2: My lady kitty likes for me to do that.
- 42:02Speaker 6: So what do you have two decks?
- 42:04Speaker 7: I am going back into the box. No, don't do that,
- 42:12Speaker 7: not for a movie. This one's just for me.
- 42:16Speaker 4: I'm going to hang out in there with a couple
- 42:19Speaker 4: of my furry friends.
- 42:22Speaker 2: What kind of animal?
- 42:24Speaker 7: M small?
- 42:29Speaker 4: Okay, sort of flutter flutter, guys, he wants to say, bats,
- 42:36Speaker 4: kind of a dark color.
- 42:39Speaker 2: If you like bats, like yourself?
- 42:42Speaker 6: What kind of bat?
- 42:43Speaker 7: I am in love with the bats. There I said it.
- 42:46Speaker 7: I love bats. I refuse to hide any longer.
- 42:53Speaker 8: Finally, it feels so good.
- 42:55Speaker 4: I'm going to make a bat movie next and I'm
- 42:57Speaker 4: going to be proud of it.
- 43:00Speaker 6: Batman.
- 43:01Speaker 3: No, okay, please tell us Skyler Biler.
- 43:07Speaker 6: Well, actually this is crazy.
- 43:09Speaker 5: After the success of my surfing movie, they reached out
- 43:13Speaker 5: and I'm going to the front of war. They're putting
- 43:16Speaker 5: me on the front lines to make a war documentary.
- 43:19Speaker 5: Front of War, the Front of War, A lot of people.
- 43:24Speaker 5: There's guys called this documentary company called Front of War,
- 43:28Speaker 5: and they send all these guys to the front of war.
- 43:30Speaker 5: And basically I'm gonna do a doc like a true
- 43:33Speaker 5: crime mystery. Who killed the people at the front of War?
- 43:38Speaker 2: Interesting?
- 43:38Speaker 6: Yeah, and I know it seems obvious.
- 43:41Speaker 5: It seems obvious the bat, the other guys, the other
- 43:43Speaker 5: guys that are against him.
- 43:44Speaker 6: But you never know, you know.
- 43:47Speaker 1: So you think someone's about to kill someone, and then
- 43:49Speaker 1: another guy's gonna sneak up and step.
- 43:52Speaker 5: All I'm saying is you never know. You gotta look
- 43:55Speaker 5: deep into these things. And then after that, we're going
- 43:58Speaker 5: on this hunting trip to uh try to hunt a
- 44:00Speaker 5: shark for some reason.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think film that.
- 44:04Speaker 6: No, that's kind of a personal thing.
- 44:07Speaker 8: No, that sounds good.
- 44:09Speaker 1: No, I don't want to film that.
- 44:11Speaker 7: That sounds good.
- 44:12Speaker 5: That sounds good, That sounds gloring as hell, us all
- 44:16Speaker 5: training to hunt a shark that may kill it, have
- 44:18Speaker 5: killed our friend.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Oh that sounds good.
- 44:20Speaker 8: And maybe film you guys surfing holding knives while you're
- 44:23Speaker 8: at it, because that.
- 44:23Speaker 5: Sounds so Oh, I film that. You guys can check
- 44:26Speaker 5: that out. It's it's surfing ninjas dot com. Oh wow,
- 44:29Speaker 5: just freaking thousands of hours of us doing on surfboards.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Wow, that's awesome.
- 44:34Speaker 6: What about you?
- 44:35Speaker 2: Let's do next thing?
- 44:36Speaker 3: Well, I'm we're of course doing season three of Sales
- 44:40Speaker 3: and I'm also doing, uh, there is a toddler playplace
- 44:46Speaker 3: that has a little you know those ballpins with a
- 44:49Speaker 3: bunch of balls. The kids are getting really competitive with
- 44:53Speaker 3: the balls, the toddlers are, So we're going to follow
- 44:55Speaker 3: them to an area of Florida ju Jupiter, Florida, uh,
- 45:00Speaker 3: where they bring all these toddlers together and they see
- 45:02Speaker 3: who could chuck the fastest ball.
- 45:05Speaker 1: WHOA I heard about this. This is called get more stupider, right?
- 45:10Speaker 8: Uh no, that's that's my other process.
- 45:15Speaker 2: They go to Jupiter to get more stupid.
- 45:18Speaker 7: Yes, yes, yes, Netflix is sending you to space.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Oh I mean Netflix is sending me everywhere where there's
- 45:25Speaker 3: a competition and a kid willing.
- 45:27Speaker 2: To cry, And that's space too.
- 45:29Speaker 8: Oh yeah, you better believe it.
- 45:31Speaker 3: They got middle schoolers up there that want to make
- 45:33Speaker 3: it to my athletes so badly.
- 45:36Speaker 5: Do you guys really think my friend was killed by
- 45:38Speaker 5: a shark?
- 45:39Speaker 1: Yes?
- 45:39Speaker 7: Man, release the bats?
- 45:43Speaker 6: What?
