Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Difference Between Scientific Focus and Artistic Focus
Transcript
- 0:01Many people hold the idea that science is fact based and
- 0:05focused on the external world solely, while the artistic focus
- 0:09is based in the use of imagination and it's not as tied
- 0:13to external facts. The difference, however, is not
- 0:17necessarily one of a lack of imagination by those with a
- 0:20scientific bent, but a different direction of focus, of
- 0:24concentration. Some of the greatest scientists,
- 0:28in fact, have extolled the power of imagination as being more
- 0:32important than systematic intellectual pursuit of
- 0:36knowledge. And on the other side, there
- 0:39have been great artists who have from time to time turned their
- 0:43attention to matters of science and engineering with great
- 0:46effect. One such artist was Leonardo da
- 0:50Vinci, whose work in engineering design and the scientific
- 0:54theories behind his designs has been highlighted positively
- 0:58through the centuries. Once an individual develops the
- 1:03power of concentration, he can turn his attention to just about
- 1:07any line of development or any pursuit and make progress in
- 1:11that field. Capacities that he had no
- 1:14knowledge about become evident as he begins to concentrate in
- 1:19any particular field. We see this with individuals who
- 1:23studied the humanities in college but who wound up highly
- 1:26successful in business without a formal background or education
- 1:31in that field. There are numerous examples of
- 1:35people who turn their power of concentration on a for them, new
- 1:39area of focus and who succeed in a second, third, or even fourth
- 1:45line of endeavour. A disciple asks, How is it that
- 1:51in people occupied with scientific studies, artistic
- 1:54imagination is lacking? Are these two things opposed to
- 1:58each other? The mother responds.
- 2:01Not necessarily. In general, the mother notes
- 2:07quote. They do not belong to the same
- 2:09domain. It is exactly as though you had
- 2:13what is called a torch light, a small beacon light in your head
- 2:16at the place of observation. Scientists who want to do a
- 2:20certain work turn the beacon in a particular way.
- 2:24They always put it there and the beacon remains.
- 2:27Thus they turn it towards matter, towards the details of
- 2:32matter. But people with imagination turn
- 2:36it upward, because up above there is everything you know,
- 2:39all inspirations of artistic and literary things.
- 2:44This comes from another domain. It comes from a much more subtle
- 2:48domain, much less material. So these turn upward and want to
- 2:53receive the light from above, but it is the same instrument.
- 2:58The others turn it downwards and it is just a lack of gymnastic
- 3:02skill. It is the same instrument.
- 3:06It is the same power of a luminous ray upon something, but
- 3:10as one has made it a habit of concentrating it in a certain
- 3:14direction, one is no longer supple. 1 loses the habit of
- 3:18doing things otherwise. But you can at any time do both
- 3:23the things. When you are doing science you
- 3:26turn it in One Direction, and when you do literature and art
- 3:30you turn it in the other direction, but it is the same
- 3:33instrument. All depends on the orientation.
- 3:37If you have concentration, you can move this power of
- 3:41concentration from one place to another, and in every way it
- 3:45will be effective. If you are occupied with
- 3:49science, you use it in a scientific way, and if you want
- 3:54to do art, you use it in an artistic way.
- 3:57But it is the same instrument and it is the same power of
- 4:01concentration. It is simply because people do
- 4:05not know this that they limit themselves.
- 4:08So the hinges get rusty. They do not turn anymore.
- 4:12Otherwise, if one keeps the habit of turning them, they
- 4:16continue to turn. Moreover, even from the ordinary
- 4:20point of view, it is not rare to find a scientist having as his
- 4:24hobby some artistic occupation and reverse.
- 4:28Also, it is because they have found that the one was not
- 4:32harmful to the other and that it was the same faculty which could
- 4:36be utilized in both. Essentially, from the general
- 4:41point of view, particularly from the intellectual viewpoint, the
- 4:46most important thing is the capacity of attention and
- 4:50concentration. It is that which one must work
- 4:53at and develop. From the point of view of
- 4:56action, physical action, it is the will.
- 5:00You must work and build up an unshakable will.
- 5:04From the intellectual point of view, you must work and build up
- 5:07a power of concentration which nothing can shake, and if you
- 5:12have both concentration and will, you will be a genius and
- 5:18nothing will resist you. End Quote.
