- 0:53Wilson. This episode is brought to you
- 0:56by Doctor Jeremy Counts down at the Counts Family Pharmacy, your
- 1:00friendly neighborhood pharmacy, three O 1 S Main St. in
- 1:03Blacksburg. Boundary Corner podcast also a
- 1:06part of the College Huddle Network.
- 1:09Boys, welcome to a winning Tuesday.
- 1:11How's everybody today? Man, it's been a busy, busy week
- 1:16for me. Man, I haven't like taken a
- 1:19breath since football started on Saturday.
- 1:21Between running around, watching games, stuff at work, trying to
- 1:25get ready for tonight. It's been busy, but it's been
- 1:28fun. Yeah, definitely busy on my end,
- 1:32always ripping and running, doing something.
- 1:35But it's football season, some people's giving up already.
- 1:39I'm just getting started. I'm happy about it, win or lose,
- 1:44draw, I'm happy to watch some football every week, all week,
- 1:49but this is a winning Tuesday. Sheldon, how you feeling?
- 1:53I'm feeling good, my week has not been busy because I'm
- 1:55unemployed but hopefully that'll change soon and we've got some
- 2:01good content coming up this week.
- 2:02I have an article for the key play coming out tomorrow talking
- 2:04about the passive game and Kyron Jones.
- 2:06So feeling feeling good after a win.
- 2:07Hey, as I say, a win is a win, so hope.
- 2:10You're doing one that's. Better than being wanted to.
- 2:13Yes. That's correct.
- 2:14They also say good teams win great teams cover and tonight
- 2:23we're going to be talking all about the game down at ODU with
- 2:27tell the truth Tuesday and then a little bit later on know the
- 2:31enemy where Larry K from the Rutgers night watch our buddy
- 2:35inside of college huddle networks going to be joining us
- 2:38give a little insight on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
- 2:42But let's do start with some tell the truth Tuesday because
- 2:46what went well, y'all was tally. You said the one big thing that
- 2:51had to happen is we needed to. Got to break the curse, man.
- 2:57We got to go. We got to go beat the road
- 2:59allegations. Nailed it.
- 3:03What? What's the judgement?
- 3:05We beat them. I mean, I'm sure we're going to
- 3:09get into some of it later on, but I got a lot of people that
- 3:12was feeling some type of way about the win or upset about it.
- 3:17They had 100 yard rusher, actually had 200 yard rushers,
- 3:22150 yard passel, 100 yard receiver, had a defensive
- 3:29defensive end with four sacks. I don't care who you play
- 3:33against, if you get 4 sacks I feel like you're balling.
- 3:37Two 4th fumbles, 1 fumble recovery for the same person,
- 3:44and DB that struggled in the first game had another pick so.
- 3:48Two and two games. I I mean, we had some good stuff
- 3:51going on. Yeah, we did some bad stuff too,
- 3:54but we had some good stuff, so I'm all right with it.
- 3:57She'll know. What about you?
- 3:59Yeah, I, it was a very, it wasn't an underwhelming win.
- 4:04It was just a very whelming win. Nothing, you know, we, we
- 4:10covered, we, we won by 20, really 27 before the backups
- 4:14gave that last touchdown. So, you know, I would have liked
- 4:17him to see it come out a little bit, a little bit faster for the
- 4:19majority of the of the first half.
- 4:21Not going to give those big plays, but you know, they, they
- 4:24did some good things. They did some not so good
- 4:25things. So we'll, I'm sure we'll talk
- 4:27about all tonight. You know what?
- 4:32I, I saw improvement. I saw improvement.
- 4:34And Sheldon says he was, well, not overwhelmed.
- 4:38I think Tally was, he wasn't superstitious, but he was
- 4:41definitely a little stitious. So I, I think, I think we got
- 4:46over to hump a little bit. I'm excited that we scored some
- 4:51points, put up 37 against ODU. I'm excited that we covered.
- 4:56I'm excited that we were able to, as Tally said, beat the road
- 5:01allegations and finally get a victory down there in Norfolk.
- 5:05So, I mean, other than that second quarter, there's not a
- 5:08whole lot of of complaints that I have for that game.
- 5:12And we're going to talk about the second quarter a little bit.
- 5:14But what I saw that impressed me the most was just drones and
- 5:19Tooting on the ground and drones running with authority.
- 5:23Again, authority. Absolute authority.
- 5:26He was bringing a hammer real quick.
- 5:28Brian, just so you know, we're a sentimental podcast.
- 5:32Here we go. Sometimes it's true.
- 5:35First of all, y'all said it for me, We finally went in a damn
- 5:38game down there in this series. Like it felt like, you know,
- 5:41back in 2018, everything went wrong, quarterback broke his
- 5:44leg, nobody knew what they were doing on either side of the
- 5:47ball. We lose a shootout down there to
- 5:50ODU. And then just three years ago,
- 5:53two years ago, two years ago, everything that could go wrong
- 5:58did go wrong. The ball that was in Norfolk was
- 6:00snapped to Williamsbury. We always talk about that.
- 6:03This time that none of that happened.
- 6:05We just went out and played. We played.
- 6:08We did not play down. We played to them.
- 6:11And to what y'all have both said.
- 6:13I mean, let's talk about the drawing to do the true dog, the
- 6:17true dog ground game. 232 combined, 3 touchdowns and it
- 6:23wasn't fancy runs, it was that big run from drones.
- 6:28I mean, he was looking to. Hurt.
- 6:31He was looking to hurt somebody when he got downfield.
- 6:33It ain't even good about that. He broke the tackle there kind
- 6:38of at the point of attack and then just got out there in the
- 6:40open and looking for contact, looking for contact and somebody
- 6:45brought it and he got stiff armed into the dirt.
- 6:50Made his Mama feel it a little bit and then the next dude got
- 6:53truck. So three guys caught some
- 6:56allegations on that one. Yeah.
- 6:59And it's like that's kind of the Karen that we used to seeing and
- 7:03they have for whatever reason went away from that.
- 7:06I understand you want to protect your quarterback.
- 7:10I will talk about it a little bit later, but and that's who he
- 7:13is. I mean, you can't stop Lamar
- 7:16Jackson from doing what Lamar Jackson does.
- 7:18He's small, he runs, he's going to take some hits.
- 7:21But if he doesn't have part of that as his game, he's not a
- 7:25effective quarterback. So I mean, what we seen from
- 7:28drones is what I expected to see most of the year, but I feel
- 7:32like they have kind of shield away from that.
- 7:34So I will, I don't know if it was a a call play or he just
- 7:39said I think at that point it was like 14 to 10.
- 7:42So it's still kind of close. And he was like, all right, fuck
- 7:46this. We got to, we got to do
- 7:48something, you know what I'm saying?
- 7:49And from then on, it kind of looked like, OK, let's start
- 7:52dominating the game. 90% get on my back for a little bit.
- 7:56Let's go take a ride. Shown anything catch you stat
- 8:00wise, data wise or just your eyes from watching those guys
- 8:03run? No, not really stat wise or data
- 8:07wise anything. I think it was just good to see,
- 8:11good to see the offensive open up, some explosive plays and it
- 8:14had a couple of gadget plays. Park Clemens, great job as a
- 8:16slot receiver. He was a.
- 8:19The best jumper jacks I've seen and you know what, we didn't
- 8:22throw it to him like UVA, so that.
- 8:24He didn't jump off sides. We learned from the mistakes of
- 8:28our rivals. Don't throw it to the tackle,
- 8:31let him be the decoy. So.
- 8:34So so so did you go re watch that play?
- 8:39Yeah, I I did rewatch it. So did literally did just the
- 8:42safeties head like just like immediately move to the left?
- 8:45Like why is he doing that? Yeah, no, they they all took the
- 8:49bait and and Lane was just running down Scott free.
- 8:52I don't know if I'd be. I'd be interested to see if if
- 8:55adds a adds a snap first Parker as a slot receiver and then puts
- 9:00that puts that into his final PF upgrade.
- 9:02Perfect. Perfect.
- 9:03He was a perfect slot receiver, Yeah. 99.9 grade.
- 9:07That was a good call. But you know what, look at that
- 9:09play and the first thing my thought was the next time you
- 9:12run that the safeties are going to go with Lane.
- 9:15And I know we get on Parker Clements a lot, but you imagine
- 9:20the safeties run up if you're outside.
- 9:22Guy locks up his guy Kyron Sweet with an offensive lineman just
- 9:27right in front of him. Think about that play design,
- 9:31because the next. Time.
- 9:32The first thing I'm thinking about is, is Varsity Blues man
- 9:36the thing that damn play where I run down feeling act like I'm
- 9:38lost, is it? No, it's the play where you
- 9:40stand there and do jumping jacks.
- 9:42Right. But obviously great game for Jay
- 9:46Lane as well. 125 total yards, that touchdown pass and y'all
- 9:53the the play where tell me y'all didn't get the feeling that
- 9:58whatever it was bad snap, weird hand off and that ball went
- 10:02tumbling. I mean, I hate to sit here.
- 10:06I sat here and everything from 2022 just came rushing back in
- 10:09my brain watching that play like, Oh my God, no, not again,
- 10:13not again. And then I'm like, OK, he got
- 10:16it, throw it away, throw it away.
- 10:17And the next thing you know, we gone.
- 10:23Yeah, it wasn't really. I wasn't watching it in in in
- 10:26terror actually, because it kind of happened quick, you know, So
- 10:31it was like when it happened, I think I text y'all and was like,
- 10:34Oh yeah, this is like we're going to win the game.
- 10:37You can't have a couple of things like that happen when you
- 10:39don't win, you know what I'm saying?
- 10:41It's like when you have stuff like that happened to you, it's
- 10:44like, yeah, that's your game. It doesn't matter what happens,
- 10:46don't matter how close it is, you're going to win.
- 10:48You know, when we were in Vanderbilt, they put the ball on
- 10:50the ground 93 times, got all of them, pick one of them, ran it
- 10:54around. Like when shit like that
- 10:56happened, you just like, OK, somebody is on the yeah,
- 11:01somebody. Speaking of Vanderbilt, I know
- 11:05this is a Virginia Tech podcast and I know a lot of people are
- 11:08paying attention to Vanderbilt because we lost to them.
- 11:11Did anybody watch any of that game because it was not their
- 11:14night? And when I say not that night,
- 11:16it was when people ask like, how do people lose?
- 11:20And old Georgia State beat them and we couldn't go watch it, go
- 11:25watch the game. And when stuff like what happens
- 11:29in those games happens, there's nothing you can do.
- 11:30It's like quarterback rolls out, he gets hit, fumbles the ball,
- 11:35you know, wasn't even a blind side hit.
- 11:38Then you got a guy that is a returner on the kickoff that
- 11:43gets a safety, you know, bobbles the ball, steps back into the
- 11:46end zone, grabs the ball, kneels it, They give them a safe.
- 11:50Like when stuff like that happen, you like, come on, man.
- 11:52Like it's not your day. So it's like, man, sometimes you
- 11:56just got to watch games and and stop watching.
- 11:59Well, this team should beat this team and this thing like it's
- 12:01all different. So every week's different. 17 to
- 12:0520, well, in some cases, 23 old kids in the case of what is it,
- 12:10Oklahoma State, Utah, it's 24 and 25 year old kids.
- 12:15I mean, yeah, we'll talk about that later.
- 12:18But Sheldon, let's go real quick because I think just from our
- 12:21eyes, especially Tally and Bronze as we kind of already
- 12:25heard, I got a feeling offensive line probably played better,
- 12:28more across the board, more average to above average than
- 12:31what we've been dealing with this.
- 12:33Maybe a couple people are above average in multiple people below
- 12:37average. So what did they look like this
- 12:38week? Yeah, it was pretty solid
- 12:41overall. Certainly just based on the eye
- 12:43test, you know, they they kind of opened up a little bit in the
- 12:45second-half once they kind of started to wear ODU down.
- 12:48But you know, park limits for as much grief as people give him
- 12:52and sometimes it's been justified, but not so in this
- 12:54case. He was a 75.8, which was really
- 12:57good. We saw Johnny Garrett sub in for
- 13:01Xavier Chaplin. He was solid at the 68.
- 13:03So that was good to see. And then and patch protection.
- 13:07Caden Ward was really good. He was a top grader at 85, which
- 13:11is very good for an offensive offensive lineman.
- 13:14So, you know, we saw we saw Brody Meadows get some snaps
- 13:16too. You kind of got into the bench a
- 13:18little bit and he actually did extremely well in the limited
- 13:20time he was he was in the game. So I thought it was, I thought
- 13:23it was a pretty solid performance from the from the
- 13:25front 5. And, and again, I told, like I
- 13:28told you last year, it was that third game with drones where
- 13:31like things start clicking. We start feeling this is the
- 13:35offense more and more and the guys have to get comfortable.
- 13:40And it's one of those things you can we can scream out, we can be
- 13:42mad all year. This happens to a lot of teams.
- 13:44We're not the only team in the country this happens to.
- 13:47It irritates us probably more than any fan base in the
- 13:49country. But that's neither here nor
- 13:51there. And that might be an episode,
- 13:53any offseason that we might be working on, but.
- 13:56I think it's more with how often we end up doing it when, when
- 14:01there is any stakes at play, whether it's, you know, a Boise
- 14:08back-to-back was, you know, all, all all these weird things that
- 14:12happened at the start of the year for the Hokies.
- 14:15When there's any sort of expectations attached to a team.
- 14:18It's true. It just feels like, you know,
- 14:20that there's a reason that chokies exist, and that's one of
- 14:24them all. Right, let's roll on and run on
- 14:28to the defensive side of the ball with APR because Tally's
- 14:33already mentioned it. What a absolute ball game he had
- 14:37because he did have 7 total tackles.
- 14:42He had the trifecta when it comes to hitting the
- 14:46quarterback, the strip, the sack and a formal recovery.
- 14:51He had four total sacks. Second time he's had four total
- 14:55sacks. And I'm going to just let these
- 14:57guys say it. The only other person in
- 14:59Virginia Tech history do that is.
- 15:03Bruce. Bruce.
- 15:03Bruce. Smith.
- 15:05Bruce Smith, So that is on some level cool part was Smith was
- 15:10standing on the sidelines to see him do it like and he's in in
- 15:14APR said in the post. He's like, yeah, he dabbed me up
- 15:17before the game. It was just like, you know, and
- 15:19it's cool where it happened, especially with APR being down
- 15:22there. And I mean, he looked that was
- 15:26the best he looked all year. Like he, he finally looked
- 15:30comfortable for the first time, at least in my eyes.
- 15:34Brian, what did what did you feel did you see from APR?
- 15:37Because it looked like that was the APR middle of the last
- 15:40season where teams were having to just think about him every
- 15:42snap. Yeah, I mean, the explosions
- 15:45been there and I think you know it.
- 15:47This was a a time that was right for him to kind of take that
- 15:51that step because, you know, we talked about it on this show
- 15:56last week that this offensive line wasn't a ton to write home
- 16:00about. It was it was time for the the
- 16:02guys on our defensive line to have a feast.
- 16:04And I'm glad to see that they showed up and entered the bell
- 16:06for that. Miss Talley.
- 16:11Oh yeah, definitely. You know, not much to, to, you
- 16:17know, throw in besides what you guys have already said.
- 16:19It's like he was bigger and faster and stronger than him and
- 16:22he went out and he was bigger, faster and stronger than them.
- 16:24Like from the jump, you could tell whoever was was trying to
- 16:28block him couldn't do it. So whatever quarterback would
- 16:31have been back there, he was getting to him, you know, so I,
- 16:35I was excited to see. And like I said, man, the thing
- 16:38that kills me though, is when people say like, Oh well, was
- 16:42ODU, it don't matter. Like we played Delaware, we
- 16:45played, we played a lot of schools and people don't get 4
- 16:51sacks against them. So if somebody gets there for if
- 16:54somebody gets 4 sacks in the game, I'm hyping it.
- 16:57I don't care who it is. I don't care if they're playing
- 16:59the school of the blind and deaf.
- 17:01Yeah, and I mean, ODU gave that Gamecock team more hell on the
- 17:07road and then that that same team turned around and and gave
- 17:11LSU every bit that it wanted. So that's not an awful team that
- 17:16we went down to Norfolk and played.
- 17:18So I I think we need to remember that a little bit.
- 17:21Their offensive line might not be exactly what you would want
- 17:24to write home about, but that team as a whole is a pretty
- 17:26solid G5 team. Well, you got to think about
- 17:30this with South Carolina. What they scored 23 on them and
- 17:3314 was because they the the offense turned the ball inside
- 17:38the what the 20 yard line. Yeah, something like.
- 17:40That like that, yeah. South Carolina didn't drive that
- 17:44ball at all. Again, so do you and I know it's
- 17:46it's again what tell you were just trying to say it's week to
- 17:48week and things like that. And Sheldon, I'm sure you you
- 17:52could probably find data about like to show us like how teams
- 17:56perform because it's it's the the crazy thing I feel about
- 18:00college football versus Pro is I feel like Pro is always more
- 18:05predictable outcomes. I feel like college it is
- 18:08legitimately like playing. I don't know.
- 18:10You want to say roulette? Yeah, Callie, you gamble on the.
- 18:14You gamble, you go down. The contras when you say
- 18:17roulette so. Well, but but it's roulette.
- 18:19It's like, where are you going to place the bet?
- 18:21How you going to stagger it out? So yeah, but real quick I I
- 18:26noticed I think APR second highest defensive end for
- 18:31defensive player this week, Sheldon in PFF grades.
- 18:35Yeah, something like that. I know he was the the Walter
- 18:38Camp player of the week for for the entire country.
- 18:40So very well, well deserved honor.
- 18:43Yeah, really good on that. High PFF grades and everything.
- 18:46And I think just in general, really other than the second
- 18:50quarter, the the defense showed up.
- 18:54The defense showed up to what we thought they were going to be.
- 18:59I know, Shelton, you've got the data point in here.
- 19:01We, we, we, you, you. I think, I don't know if you
- 19:03texted the group or just me and talking about missed tackle
- 19:05rates, how it went down again, what is your perspective, just
- 19:11the data and just watching the game, is the defense slowly
- 19:15morphing into what we thought it would be from Jump Street
- 19:17Shelton? I think it's getting there.
- 19:20I mean, I know they they moved up to 35th and SP plus this
- 19:24weekend for defense, which was, you know, kind of where they
- 19:27started the year. They're, you know, a little bit
- 19:28better than the offense right now.
- 19:29So but yeah, I mean, like, I like the way Tally's thinking.
- 19:32It's not about who you played, it's how you played.
- 19:35And APR got his second career force that game.
- 19:39Last one was against Wake Forest last year.
- 19:41So look, he was a dog 91.1 PFF grade, which was, like I said,
- 19:45one of the best in the country. And that's really hard to do as
- 19:48AD lineman. Just from what I can see.
- 19:50It's you know, the the D line grades for PFF are much more
- 19:53kind of condensed in that sort of average range, but a 90 plus
- 19:56grade is really good. So mentioned the four stacks, 5
- 20:00total Kiwi pressures, which was great and then missed tackles.
- 20:03I was looking at this because I've been following it for
- 20:07throughout the course of the year.
- 20:09Tech had a. 14% missed tackle rate, which a which was a
- 20:13significant improvement from the last two weeks.
- 20:15That's really good. I think, you know, national
- 20:17average is right around 18 to 20%.
- 20:20So they cut that down a lot, which is great to see.
- 20:22You know, not not having, you know, guys break tackles and and
- 20:24get free in the secondary. Obviously you got to make sure
- 20:26that, you know, they're not running free, which happens
- 20:28sometimes, but, you know, always good to always good to wrap guys
- 20:31up. So, yeah.
- 20:32And then you look at some of the events that's, you know, we saw
- 20:35a lot of a lot of blue on that at advanced, that chart on game
- 20:38on paper.com, which is always a good thing.
- 20:40You want to see blue 31% success rate for ODU, which was 9th
- 20:44percentile all games this year. So they really just just
- 20:46smothered them really. So that was that was good to
- 20:49see. Yeah, and I mean, when we talk
- 20:54about, you know, success rate and getting better game to game,
- 20:58it helps when a defense is coming into their own and not
- 21:02having to play a triple option offense.
- 21:06So if we're seeing improvement, that's one of the reasons we're
- 21:10not seeing a funky look where responsibilities are
- 21:13significantly different than they would be week to week.
- 21:16So we're getting into a little more consistent offensive
- 21:20attack. We're going to see, you know,
- 21:22where we'll talk about here in a little bit.
- 21:23We're going to see a lot more of that this week, a little more
- 21:26conventional offensive attack. So you're not not looking so
- 21:31much for the, the quarterback to have a lot of misdirection,
- 21:37doing a lot of keepers. You know, much, much less of
- 21:40that going forward. And and that's, that's going to
- 21:42be a good thing for this defense.
- 21:44I feel like because when they can play the way they have the
- 21:47last few last couple weeks, that's going to bode well for us
- 21:52because that's going to keep us in every game regardless of what
- 21:54the offense is doing. Anything to add to that, Kelly?
- 22:00No, not really, man. I mean, we talked a lot about
- 22:03what went good. I mean, you always want to talk
- 22:05about what goes good after a win.
- 22:08But when you talk about what went good, what went good, you
- 22:10also have to talk about what went bad.
- 22:13So no lie, Curtis, I'm going to toss it to you and you part us
- 22:17with what went bad. Well, y'all know what when I
- 22:22texted about Saturday night was we gave up three runs, 40 plus
- 22:28yards and that's not good, especially when the other team
- 22:33only rushes for 243 yards on close to 40 carries.
- 22:37And if you do the math 140 of that on three of them.
- 22:41That was the that was the issue last year.
- 22:44We saw at times and I and and I listen to the half the the the
- 22:48post game stuff and I, I, I relooked at the 65 yard
- 22:53touchdown run and and by by all means, I'm I'm trying to figure
- 23:00out exactly what the defensive end last ain't blanking on right
- 23:07now. Yeah, what what CJ McRae was
- 23:10doing and the other one a little miscommunicate, a misfit.
- 23:15It's like we, we we can survive against.
- 23:19So do you like that? We're about to start a stretch
- 23:22of games we can't survive. You cannot give up those big
- 23:26runs. And I could hear a little pissed
- 23:28off, as in prize voice, because one of those runs, he was true.
- 23:31It should have been a 15 yard game.
- 23:33It should not have been a 40 plus yard game.
- 23:35Right. And that's what happens.
- 23:37That's what happens when you guess Curtis, he said.
- 23:40You didn't know what he was doing.
- 23:41He was guessing. Well, it's.
- 23:43Hold on. You want to make a big play.
- 23:44You want to hit the running back because you guess that's where
- 23:47the ball's going. But your responsibility is
- 23:49probably the quarterback, which just ran for a 65 yard
- 23:53touchdown. So you got to be disciplined.
- 23:56That's what it comes to on all phases of the game.
- 23:59You got to be disciplined. Whatever your job is, you got to
- 24:03do that job. Now, from what I can see, I
- 24:05think that was his man, but it was nobody else there, you know
- 24:08what I'm saying? And you know, if you're in that
- 24:10kind of coverage, you got to kind of know what's going on and
- 24:12where everybody is so. Yeah, especially against that
- 24:16offense where they've got their receivers outside the numbers.
- 24:19So you don't really have as much support as you would normally
- 24:24have from those guys playing corner guys playing nickel,
- 24:28depending on where it where it, where they are, maybe even the
- 24:31safety there. So you don't have the help that
- 24:32you normally would have against that type of offense.
- 24:36So if you get, if they get to the alley, they're going to be
- 24:39running for a bit. Yeah.
- 24:42Sean, anything on either of those?
- 24:44Play again. Shelton usually goes back and re
- 24:47watches it. I try to sometimes.
- 24:49Sometimes I just don't fit into my life.
- 24:51But did you like throw when you saw the running plays again?
- 24:54Shelton? Did you throw anything the
- 24:56second time? You're like, what are you doing?
- 24:59No. OK.
- 25:01Yeah, I mean. Obviously, like I, I, I don't
- 25:03know, you know, we don't know exactly what everyone's
- 25:05responsibility is. And you know, that's right.
- 25:07It's about my, my pay grade a little bit.
- 25:09But yeah, I mean, that was probably the one really the, the
- 25:13only area of the game that they struggled in was with the
- 25:15explosive run plays. I mean, cause look at like I say
- 25:17with the, with the, the advanced stats, Charlie, everything was
- 25:20good for tech except for the run stuff.
- 25:21So, you know, if we want to talk about this when we get there,
- 25:24But you know, the, the big place have really been the sore spot
- 25:28for the defense this year. So that's kind of why it's
- 25:30slowly concerning. You guys see Mike Rutgers that
- 25:32comes in and has a good, really good running game coming to
- 25:34Wayne Stadium next week or, or this week.
- 25:36So we got to get it cleaned up somehow, someway.
- 25:39All right, all right, I'm going to go to the next one that what
- 25:42went bad and I'm going to pitch this to you tally because I want
- 25:46to hear your anger on this. So you have 14 nothing.
- 25:50You had a fast start, right? Good start.
- 25:54You drive again, you're at the 25 yard line.
- 25:56You got John Love, who is one of the more accurate kickers, not
- 26:00only in Virginia Tech history, right now in college football,
- 26:03and it's 4th and four. What?
- 26:06What are you supposed to do that?
- 26:07Are you really supposed to go for it?
- 26:09Man, I'm taking the layups. Man, I know you want to, you
- 26:13want to lean on the team that you're supposed to be better
- 26:16than or you're supposed to do this.
- 26:18And I'm just the kind of person where I feel like you got
- 26:23momentum. Don't give it up at that point.
- 26:27Like you said, if you had a questionable kicker or you had
- 26:31the perfect play call, sure. But Jon Love has been money.
- 26:36You know, I'm giving him an opportunity to go and get him
- 26:39another stat. Hey man, go kick this field goal
- 26:41for us. So that's just how I feel.
- 26:44I mean, it's good to be aggressive, but at the same
- 26:48time, sometimes it comes back and bites you.
- 26:50And I feel like it always come back and bite us As Virginia
- 26:53Tech fans when something like that happens.
- 26:55You miss a field goal, then they score, then mishap, take the
- 26:59points because you take those points.
- 27:01If you hit that then you're up 17 to 0, you know?
- 27:05I think I drive the ball. Three times, yeah.
- 27:08I just feel when that happened, I was yelling take the point.
- 27:12So I feel like that was a a missed opportunity for us.
- 27:16Yeah, I feel like sometimes we get a little out of kilter as
- 27:20far as when to be aggressive and when to just take, like Tally
- 27:23said, take the layups. That was definitely one.
- 27:26I mean, I know we were in, we're in a group chat, we were sending
- 27:29messages. We're like kick it, kick, kick,
- 27:31kick, kick, kick it. And I mean, like Tally said, you
- 27:34want to lean on them. You want to go out there to
- 27:35search yourself. You want to say, hey, we can, we
- 27:38can get the first down here. But sometimes you just got to
- 27:41take the points and move on to the next drive because you've
- 27:43shown you can drive the football.
- 27:45You're going to get some more opportunities.
- 27:47Take the points. Yeah.
- 27:50Sheldon, any, any any comments on that any any analytics where
- 27:55it says go for it there or? Or what should I mean?
- 27:59No, yeah, I mean it's, I have no idea what, you know, different
- 28:05analytic charts will say different things.
- 28:07I think you probably in that situation probably go with the
- 28:09flow, like take the points more than four.
- 28:14That's kind of for me, that's kind of like iffy territory.
- 28:16I just don't have a huge amount of confidence in BT being able
- 28:18to convert that. So I just, I would just say take
- 28:20the points, you know, maybe if you're playing, I think if
- 28:23you're, if you're an underdog, it makes more sense to be
- 28:25aggressive and risky. I just, I don't think it makes
- 28:27sense in that situation where you're playing against a team
- 28:29that you know you're better than.
- 28:31See, while was also pissed off about that because up to that
- 28:34point they had 18 yards offense, 18 yards.
- 28:38And and it's really funny, you see how the momentum switches
- 28:41because at that point you kick the field goal.
- 28:45They have no belief there is. The honest truth is I wonder if
- 28:50they get to 10 in that quarter because now you have 17 and
- 28:52they're like, Oh my God, are we going to be able to do this?
- 28:55All right. You gave them belief, don't give
- 28:57the underdogs belief. Ever.
- 28:59Couple other things that went bad.
- 29:01That's first kick of John's. I was like, did John miss one?
- 29:04Know he got it blocked. That is now the third effective
- 29:09big blunder on special teams this year.
- 29:12It's been one a week and now it's it's a trend now and now I
- 29:17sit here and say what's going to happen next week?
- 29:19What are we going to screw up? And it's something different
- 29:22each time. So that that's where it's a
- 29:24little more frustrating. You can't even like necessarily,
- 29:27you know, draw a circle around, OK, well, we need to improve,
- 29:30you know, how we're fair catching footballs or we need to
- 29:34improve how we're blocking on kickoff or, you know, how we're
- 29:39protecting on punt. Like there there's something
- 29:41different every week. So that's that's a little more
- 29:45frustrating because you can't necessarily say it's one thing
- 29:48or the other. It's a little bit of everything
- 29:50that we've seen a coaching blunder directly with the with
- 29:54the numbers you see. OK, well, they they went to a
- 29:58different look and we didn't call a time out.
- 30:01You know, should we have been prepared for that?
- 30:03Should we should, should that be a coaching thing that we should
- 30:05have just stopped and said, let's look at it again on the
- 30:09block punt and then now you've got a block field goal where in
- 30:14early in that game it didn't look like we were doing a good
- 30:16job with protection up the middle.
- 30:17Regardless, we were now getting folks were kind of shooting the
- 30:20gaps in the middle of that, that field goal unit.
- 30:24So that's something to look at. But again, it's, it's, it's kind
- 30:29of inconsistent across the board on special teams with no real
- 30:32fixed area that we can look at. Yeah, I mean, a special teams
- 30:39unit was really good last year, so basically one of the top
- 30:41units in the country. So I know there were some
- 30:44nefarious individuals on Twitter who wanted to fire Stew Halt He.
- 30:48Really has. Yeah, every single, every single
- 30:51week. I'm not going to, I'm not going
- 30:52to name names, but we know who we know who they were.
- 30:56We'll see you'd wrestling season.
- 30:57Yeah, I mean, The thing is with, yeah, with, with special teams,
- 31:02there's such a there's such a limited sample size of plays
- 31:04that if you have 3 or 4 really bad ones, it kind of hurts you a
- 31:07lot in the in the stats. So I don't know, I mean, it
- 31:10could just be players not executing and maybe it's a
- 31:12coaching problem, but I don't know.
- 31:13I think I think Stewart's done mostly a pretty good job.
- 31:15So, well, I guess we kind of just got to see how it plays out
- 31:17the rest of the year. All right, fellas, fellas,
- 31:21anything else in y'all's opinion went bad on Saturday?
- 31:29I mean, we had another slow second quarter other than that,
- 31:32like, you know, looking at big picture for this game, second
- 31:36quarter aside, I don't really have a ton of complaints.
- 31:39All right, Charlie Sheldon, my only other complaint went bad.
- 31:46I would have liked to have buried them in the third quarter
- 31:49because we, our defense gave us every opportunity to put that
- 31:53game away at 28 to 10 in the third quarter.
- 31:56It took us to the 4th to finally knock them out.
- 31:58That's my biggest bad. Like a special.
- 32:04You went on meet bud. Muted yourself, Kurt.
- 32:11Still muted. We don't know what's going on
- 32:16with Curtis. Somebody didn't want him to
- 32:18talk, so they put him on mute while we got Curtis on mute.
- 32:22OK, you back. Here we go.
- 32:23All right. Y'all going to have to run it
- 32:24for a second because something's going on with my mic again,
- 32:27y'all? Well, while Curtis is having mic
- 32:29problems, we're just going to bring new new King to the to the
- 32:32forefront. We ain't fucking worried about
- 32:35Miami right now. We're worried about Rutgers.
- 32:37We'll talk to you next week. I don't even know who y'all play
- 32:39this week, but you better be worried about whoever y'all
- 32:42play. We'll talk to you next week.
- 32:44Do King. Thank you for joining in.
- 32:47S Florence. Because if y'all don't remember
- 32:51just a couple weeks. Ago South Florida.
- 32:52Sorry y'all, I completely lost everything.
- 32:55A couple weeks ago. South Florida went into Talley's
- 32:58home state and gave a team that's a whole lot more talented
- 33:02a hell of a run. Saturday night had them boys
- 33:06sweating bullets down there in Tuscaloosa.
- 33:08All right, let's go to this real quick.
- 33:11Brian, anything happened you were not prepared for?
- 33:16I wasn't prepared for finally jumping out the gate and getting
- 33:19a fast start. I, I, I didn't necessarily, it
- 33:22was one of those things I wanted to happen, but I wasn't
- 33:24necessarily prepared for it. So when it happened, it was very
- 33:28much a, woah, OK, this is what we can do out the gate.
- 33:32This is what I was expecting at Vanderbilt.
- 33:36I got it ODU so I'm thankful for it here but I was expecting it
- 33:39there. What about you Tally anything
- 33:42that you were not prepared for to happen?
- 33:45Yeah, I wasn't going to say, I guess.
- 33:48Yeah, you can't really be prepared for like injuries, you
- 33:52know what I'm saying? Like right out of the gate,
- 33:55Chaplin goes down. We don't see him anymore.
- 33:58Jennings was real limited. I don't know exactly what's
- 34:01going on with him, but he went down.
- 34:03So just a couple of things. The injuries, I wasn't really
- 34:06prepared for that. But on the upside, some of the
- 34:09people that came in and, and, and played for him, I mean, they
- 34:14looked good. It helped.
- 34:15It helped that we had a little bit of depth, especially on the
- 34:18offensive line. So I wasn't prepared for that,
- 34:21but it was it was good to see. Yeah, it it, I think that's
- 34:25where we, we, we set earlier about a month ago and talked
- 34:28about depth, right? Like we felt like depth at
- 34:31certain positions was a lot better.
- 34:33So Kelly, I'm with you. When I saw Garrett, because X
- 34:36was in there for Xavier, was in there for a couple plays and
- 34:38then next thing you know he's gone.
- 34:41Coach Robbie text me like who the hell 79 he got?
- 34:44No name plate. No name plate, baby.
- 34:48And you know what? They apparently they were.
- 34:51They were. They were thinking of doing
- 34:52something tricky. You know, with.
- 34:56That because with no name plate that means there's going to be
- 34:58270 nines on the field. I don't know if there's a 79 on
- 35:01defense or not. So yeah, the other thing that
- 35:07for me that I like Brian was not prepared for was that fast start
- 35:16because it had been so slow and just been.
- 35:18And when it's pop, pop you are dictating, in the words of Brian
- 35:22Siegler, you are dictating the terms to what you want to do.
- 35:26We did that right out of the gate and that's something we had
- 35:29not been able to do lately. So it's just good to see that
- 35:32because I think it's fan that gives you hope, right where you
- 35:36say, OK, we can take the ball the first time goes for some
- 35:38points. Curtis, let me ask you
- 35:40something. I ain't even thinking about this
- 35:41on the rundown, but another thing I wasn't really prepared
- 35:44for. Did you see how much we used the
- 35:47backup quarterback in the slot and stuff like what are we?
- 35:52Are we setting something up? Like, I was on my end, I was
- 35:56looking at it like we've got a lot of receivers that can run
- 36:00some plays in the rounds, whatever, put them in and we
- 36:03might get a score. But on the other hand, like I'm
- 36:06wondering what they're trying to do.
- 36:07So what do you feel about that courtesy and seeing Schlee in
- 36:10there as much as he was? Well, I heard it a couple times
- 36:14and saw it. It's just like, to your point,
- 36:16it's like we got all these receivers, you know, we know Ali
- 36:18was banged who said it after game, he tweaked something and
- 36:22at the point where it was like, OK, well, he probably can go
- 36:24back in. It's like, well, hold on, we're
- 36:25winning the game, put him to the side.
- 36:29But as much as we saw that, what did you think when he went from
- 36:33shotgun? They got drones over in the
- 36:35slot. I don't know what the time.
- 36:37Well, the only thing I saw was like, wait a second, what are we
- 36:42about to run here? And then it's like a fake
- 36:44reverse and Schlee went up. I mean, it was a beautiful
- 36:46little quarterback sweep because you my first thought of the
- 36:50inclination is those safeties back there saw drones and they
- 36:53saw them going by. Like he's gonna hand it off to
- 36:55him. He's on Chuck it on us.
- 36:57And he didn't. And then they again, it's a 10
- 37:00yard game. I don't think it's anything
- 37:01wrong with it. But I also think, you know what
- 37:05I thought to myself, Tally, I think the confidence in pop is
- 37:08going up. I think the confidence pop is up
- 37:11Now where they feel, hey, we have this dynamic player.
- 37:14He started a bunch of games. He knows college speed.
- 37:17How can we utilize that? All right.
- 37:20Yeah, go ahead, Brian. I was just going to say, yeah,
- 37:23that that I think that's a good point.
- 37:25I think, you know, you got to take advantage of the talent
- 37:28that you have out there. And when you have a guy that can
- 37:31throw but is an athlete that gives you another wrinkle,
- 37:34right? And and and there's nothing
- 37:36wrong with adding an extra wrinkle to your offense.
- 37:38And you know what, another thing is kind of you got to play the
- 37:40game within the game. So if Kyron decides to move on
- 37:46after this year, you know, to go on the big and better things,
- 37:52what does your quarterback situation look like?
- 37:54Like you kind of got to depend on Pop.
- 37:56You know, he's been in the system in the second year,
- 37:59right? So going in the next year will
- 38:01be year three. If he doesn't touch the field at
- 38:03all, does he decide to leave? You know what I mean?
- 38:06So things like that. So it was good to see him get on
- 38:09the field. And like you said, Curtis, I, I,
- 38:11I can maybe see that and agree with that.
- 38:14Well, they've got a little bit more confidence in him where,
- 38:17hey, if something happens where you'll wind it, we ain't going
- 38:19to even say hurt, you'll wind it and can't go in.
- 38:21We do have another quarterback that we can put in and.
- 38:24He did go in. He did go in last series.
- 38:26I can see that. All right, as always, we get to
- 38:29our last piece here. Hopefully Shelton has figured
- 38:32out his Internet, all sorts of technical issues tonight on the
- 38:35Bouncer Corner podcast. That happens occasionally.
- 38:37But what can we do better moving forward?
- 38:40I know Shelton's got something he wants to do in the passing
- 38:42game, so I'm going to try to hold him off to the end.
- 38:46But what about you, Tally? There he is.
- 38:49So we're going, Sheldon, you were going to be our last
- 38:52because I know you got a lot to say and you got an article
- 38:55coming out with Tally, Sheldon, talk about the passing game and
- 38:58all that. But what are you looking at with
- 39:01what can we do better moving forward?
- 39:05I'll say what what can we do better moving forward is mainly
- 39:08just just a defensive run fits for the most part.
- 39:11You know what I'm saying? Like again, I don't know the
- 39:14schemes that they run. I just know kind of what I see
- 39:16and what I know of football. The free flowing schemes is kind
- 39:21of having linebackers. They can run side to side is
- 39:24great, but sometimes you got to have a gap responsibility and
- 39:27come downhill and hit because if you're constantly going side to
- 39:30side and not North and South, sometimes things get by you.
- 39:33So I'd like to see us just build on what we've been doing.
- 39:37You know this next you're going to have a physical game this
- 39:39week. They're going to come in,
- 39:41they're going to be well coached, they're going to be
- 39:42physical. You're going to have the
- 39:44opportunity to size somebody up and hit them.
- 39:46So we don't need, no, we don't need Sheldon to be having to
- 39:51spend his whole night talking about missed tackle rates and PW
- 39:56IS and WWFS. We need y'all to come downhill
- 40:01and hit somebody that show gap. Don't let nobody come through
- 40:03it. So I like to see that moving
- 40:05forward, Ryan. Yeah, I mean, you talked about
- 40:10it and and, and I'm going to flip it to the other side.
- 40:12Let's get let's get more of our weapons involved in the offense
- 40:17consistently. I know we've got a couple guys
- 40:20with Knicks. I know we got a couple guys that
- 40:22are still kind of working themselves back into playing
- 40:24shape. I'd like to see Felton get more
- 40:26targets. I'd like to see, you know, if,
- 40:29if Jennings is healthy, I'd like to see him get some more
- 40:31targets. Yeah, right now we have a good
- 40:34problem that we have probably too many mouths to feed from a
- 40:37wide receiver standpoint. At the same time, I think
- 40:41because they each bring a little bit of a different skill set to
- 40:45the table, it'd be nice to see them all get involved because
- 40:48that's going to make the offense more dynamic.
- 40:49I'm. Going to throw.
- 40:51I'm going to throw something on that before we go to the next
- 40:53thing too. Kind of what Brian was saying,
- 40:56you know, too many mouths to feed and more targets and stuff.
- 41:00Another thing with the players and they have to realize, and I
- 41:02know it's a hard thing to do, but and I and I think they're
- 41:06fully capable of it. Like when you're getting like
- 41:09limited opportunities, you have to make the best at opportunity
- 41:13when you get it. Like, you know, I've seen some
- 41:15wide receivers go to all games, you know, ball hits you in the
- 41:19hands, you drop it because you're excited, you're getting
- 41:21it. Like you got to make that catch
- 41:22because you don't know when it's going to come around again.
- 41:25You got to think about your quarterback back there.
- 41:27He's getting the ball to who he's comfortable with when he
- 41:31starts. When things go awry and Kyron
- 41:35starts scrambling around back there, if you go look at the
- 41:38games, who does he look for? He's looking for Jay Lane or
- 41:41he's looking for guys Nail, but they're also knowing where to go
- 41:45and getting in the position to be open.
- 41:46So, you know, I'd like to see some of our playmakers.
- 41:52If everybody's on the scramble drill, everybody just get in the
- 41:54scramble drill. I know we can't throw it to
- 41:56everybody, but you got to be open sometimes too.
- 41:59And I'm not saying that that's not because I can't see the
- 42:00whole field, but I'm just saying if I'm looking at things from a
- 42:04past perspective, like there's a couple of people that are
- 42:07getting open when he's scrambling around with that.
- 42:09But like when Curtis said that ball was bouncing around and he
- 42:14was nervous, like I knew when he picked it up and he and that
- 42:17first man missed him, I was like, those nails going to be
- 42:20open and it was Jay Lane. But so that's that's what I
- 42:23would want to add to that. Nice, Sheldon.
- 42:26I'm going to let you go man, because you got some stuff.
- 42:28You mentioned to us that going better moving forward.
- 42:31You wrote an article about it. Go, man.
- 42:34Yeah. So the biggest thing I think
- 42:36that has to improve as a passing game and it's been a little bit
- 42:39lackluster so far this year through three games, some of the
- 42:43key stats Hokies are 105th in passing success rate and that
- 42:47includes passes and sacks as well.
- 42:50A little bit better than the rush game, but really the the
- 42:52pass game's been kind of their their biggest sore spot.
- 42:55So when I was looking at numbers this week, what I found was that
- 42:59teams are playing zone extremely often against tech 81%, if
- 43:05memory serves, zone defense. That's a 40% increase from last
- 43:09year. So what they're trying to do, I
- 43:10think is, you know, flood the passing lanes, get Kyron off his
- 43:14primary read, you know, make him go through his 2nd and 3rd
- 43:16progressions, essentially have him scan the field and try to be
- 43:18a drop back passer. And for the most part, it's
- 43:21worked pretty well. Particularly, you know, one
- 43:23thing that Tech had success with last year was their short
- 43:26passing game. They're really good there in
- 43:27terms of, you know, throwing behind a lot of scrimmage screen
- 43:30passes, you know, get the ball to your playmakers, get it out
- 43:33quickly. Don't let your O line block for
- 43:35a long period of time and let your playmakers make plays in
- 43:37space. Now that worked really well last
- 43:40year, but this year their efficiency on those short throws
- 43:43has just plummeted. I think drones was second,
- 43:47second worst passes rating among all power Power 4 quarterbacks
- 43:51in efficiency on short throws. So, you know, that's a big sore
- 43:56spot for me. I think, you know, obviously
- 43:59it's easier when, you know, you got guys looking at the
- 44:01quarterback. They're not logged on to their
- 44:02man. And I just think that, you know,
- 44:05drones has to be able to to to scan the field a little bit
- 44:09better, be more consistent in his footwork and his mechanics,
- 44:11because I think that's where he struggled a little bit.
- 44:13You know, when you're on your second or third read and you're
- 44:17sitting there in the pocket having to go through his
- 44:19progressions and it's it's easy to, you know, maybe get a little
- 44:23bit rushed, in which case your mechanics suffer.
- 44:25So I think if if drones, the hope is that he can have the
- 44:30game slowed down for him a little bit because this is
- 44:31really the first time in his career where he's been forced to
- 44:34be a a traditional drop back passer.
- 44:37And it's been it's been a challenge.
- 44:39So I think hopefully he gets better with more experience.
- 44:42But if I'm a you know, if I'm a tech fan, that's that's the
- 44:46biggest concern for me is like, can tech be efficient against
- 44:49zone defense when other teams know they're passing the ball?
- 44:52Can they? Can they push it downfield?
- 44:55Yeah. And I think to a point, I'm glad
- 44:58you make the point with the zone versus man in that case,
- 45:00Shelton, because one way you can do zone Busters and everything
- 45:04is roll the pocket and move, Karen, because immediately you
- 45:07start moving and they're downfield, they're locked on
- 45:10him, They're usually vacating zones.
- 45:12People are getting off their spots.
- 45:15We talked about, I think you mentioned a couple weeks ago,
- 45:17we're not rolling the pocket much.
- 45:19It's OK to do that, get him comfortable because we have seen
- 45:23when he has gotten comfortable, he is going to make throws.
- 45:27But you've got to get him there every week and if it's rolling
- 45:30the pockets, if it runs zone reads, RPO, stuff like that.
- 45:34That's on Tyler Bowen though. Tyler Bowen's his first thought
- 45:37should be my first 10 play should be get Kyron comfortable
- 45:42and whether it's him running or passing.
- 45:45So I'll go flip it. I didn't even write this on
- 45:47here. Go better moving forward.
- 45:49Get Karen comfortable quicker because the quicker he's
- 45:51comfortable, the the quicker he's going to do exactly what
- 45:55Sheldon's talking about. He's going to be more come from
- 45:56the past going through his reads.
- 45:58One more piece I'll say I want to see better going forward.
- 46:01I don't want any more special teams blunders.
- 46:03I want a clean game Saturday. I don't want double jerseys.
- 46:07I don't want to block kick. I don't want to block, punt,
- 46:12clean, write that down. And the honest truth is this.
- 46:17That was the best game we've played all year.
- 46:19It's been three games in the best complete game.
- 46:22I still think the best half of football was probably against
- 46:25Vanderbilt. Honest to God, truth, I think
- 46:27that was the best half we've played all year.
- 46:29But a complete game beginning in, that's it.
- 46:31And I think we sit here and probably everybody watching us
- 46:34tonight and our fans, I don't think we're even close to the
- 46:40peak yet. No.
- 46:41I don't think. Still haven't played a complete
- 46:44game still. Haven't played a complete game,
- 46:46still haven't played our best game, so that's where I'm going
- 46:50to leave that one last piece. A lot of people injured and
- 46:52questionable this week and it's going to happen.
- 46:57But I'm for one. Everybody who's banged up, just
- 47:01let them sit till Saturday. And I know you want them to go.
- 47:05Through practice, but it's like practice is a good thing, but we
- 47:08need games. All righty.
- 47:11So fellows, as you all know, we are brought to you by Counts
- 47:15Family Pharmacy, your friendly neighborhood pharmacy located at
- 47:19three O 1 S Main St. in Blacksbury.
- 47:21I did not get a chance to reach out to Jeremy this week to
- 47:24figure out who's sending me the PS5.
- 47:29Somebody won APS 5 and they're supposed to send it to Curtis.
- 47:33So if you're listening, if you want, just get it to him.
- 47:37Just put it, just put your name right here in the comment
- 47:39section and I'll, I'll get with you and get you my address.
- 47:42So we jump from the Hokies and tell the truth Tuesday to now we
- 47:49are going to get to know the enemy.
- 47:52And just like last week, we have found another very special
- 47:56guest. So we are introducing this week
- 47:59part of the college huddle, Larry K, who was from the
- 48:02Rutgers Night Watch. Larry, how are you doing this
- 48:05evening, Sir? How you fellas doing?
- 48:07I'm doing good man. I'm doing good.
- 48:10Man, rocking and rolling it was, it was fun.
- 48:12For those that don't know, me and Larry had a nice little 45
- 48:17minute conversation earlier today.
- 48:19I talked to little Hokies with him.
- 48:21He's returning the favor. Talking a little Scarlet Knights
- 48:24with us tonight. Yes, Sir.
- 48:26Yeah, my show Brian came on and people got a lot from it.
- 48:30So it was a lot of fun today and then I had to hop off and do a
- 48:33Pro Football thing and then back with you guys.
- 48:35So excited about the game Saturday, Excited to talk
- 48:38Rutgers and to let you guys know whatever you want to know.
- 48:42Awesome. Well, Larry, before we get into
- 48:45all the nuts and bolts of the offense, defense and a little
- 48:47bit about Rutgers this year, a little bit about yourself, how
- 48:49did you stumble upon doing a Rutgers football podcast?
- 48:53So I had kind of an audio background.
- 48:55I had done like different podcasts growing up, you know,
- 48:59sometimes current events, podcasts.
- 49:00I was into music growing up, so I kind of had to set up with a
- 49:03microphone and keyboard and all Pro Tools and most audiological
- 49:08stuff. So I started doing, believe it
- 49:10or not, I'm a Miami Dolphins fan for the NFL, even though I'm a
- 49:13Jersey guy. Long story, not worth going into
- 49:15today, but I started a podcast doing that because I'm like, OK,
- 49:19I want to talk just about my pro team, whatever.
- 49:21It kind of took off. So then I'm sitting there and
- 49:23I'm like, you know, I'm a Rutgers fan too, and I go to
- 49:26every game and I'm an alum and I'm like, there's really not a
- 49:29lot of, you know, content out there on a regular basis for
- 49:33Rutgers stuff aside from the beat writers and whoever.
- 49:36So there's a void there. And if I can fill that with the
- 49:39equipment and the wherewithal I already have, maybe it could go
- 49:42well. And it it's so far has gone
- 49:44well. And then I went on with Zach
- 49:46Guggenheim of Big 10 Talk and Big 10 Football Talk, and then
- 49:51he was kind of involved with setting up the college huddle.
- 49:53So they extended me the invite. I used to write for a site
- 49:57called On the Banks, which was like the Rutgers portion of SB
- 50:01Nation. And so they kind of ran it kind
- 50:04of professionally over there. So I was able to write for them
- 50:06for quite a while. Aaron Brightman at the Scarlett
- 50:11Scarlett Faithful, who runs his own podcast, brought me on to
- 50:14that, and he was my editor. So then when there was an
- 50:17opportunity to go out of my own, you know, I did it and I write
- 50:20creatively and whatnot. So it was kind of like an easy
- 50:22transition, Hey, And it's a lot easier to talk all, all the time
- 50:26than to write it down. So kind of did night watch my
- 50:29show and took off from there. That's awesome, Larry.
- 50:34And I love hearing kind of that journey because I think
- 50:37everybody that's a podcaster kind of has their own unique
- 50:40journey of how they got to this, whether it's just having a, a, a
- 50:44fun chat with some, with some fans or whether they kind of
- 50:47went through, you know, like you, you know, writing, doing
- 50:51other podcasts and other venues. And then you kind of get to,
- 50:53well, here's my passion and kind of, you know, you find your
- 50:56niche in, in that fandom. But it's good to hear that.
- 51:00Like I said, I, I love jumping on with you earlier.
- 51:02It was a really good time and just just chopping up and
- 51:05talking some football with you. So we're going to get to it.
- 51:08Let's start on the offensive side of the ball.
- 51:12Yeah, offensive coordinator Kirk Shiraka.
- 51:15What can we expect from this Scarlet Knights offense when it
- 51:20kicks off at 3:30 on Saturday? We are, as most probably know
- 51:25and suspect we are, a ground and pound.
- 51:27First thing we want to do is establish the run game.
- 51:30Kyle Monunguy Really, really tough runner.
- 51:34Monster. Absolute Monster.
- 51:37Came out of high school with Jalen Berger in the same class
- 51:39and Jalen got all the hype and fanfare, but Mananga has been
- 51:44the steady presence who's developed from freshman to now.
- 51:48Decided to come back. I thought his stock was pretty
- 51:50high last year. Came back to school for this
- 51:53year, has been running his butt off the first two weeks already.
- 51:58They're going to like to try to get in there, you know, inside
- 52:01the tackles, inside the guards. But once every once in a while,
- 52:03once they've established that, Kyle's going to see the pile and
- 52:06he's going to cut back and try to find a lane outside and cut
- 52:09around that way. They tried to build the pass
- 52:12game off of the run. You might have some play fakes
- 52:15and they're going to try to take a deep shot or two.
- 52:17Last year, Gavin Wimsett was the quarterback, had a lot of
- 52:21wheels, had a lot of legs. But this year, Athan
- 52:23Kaliakmanis, who's a Minnesota transfer, came in and he was a
- 52:28starter for about a year and a half, I believe at Minnesota.
- 52:31He's reunited with Kirk Shiraka and he's pretty accurate
- 52:35quarterback. I think his issues might come in
- 52:38when he tries to squeeze it a little bit into coverage.
- 52:40But he can he can hit guys in stride.
- 52:42He can hit guys down the field. So you're looking for a running
- 52:46offense that tries to take its shots.
- 52:49The only thing that's non traditional, when I say
- 52:51traditional, I'm talking, you know, millennial.
- 52:54So the 80s I formation is not there.
- 52:55You know, we got one back, three wide outs and a tight end.
- 52:59But other than that, it looks fairly fairly traditional.
- 53:02Hey, let me ask this, Larry, what was the feeling not only of
- 53:05yourself, but you know, your friends, fellow alums, when the
- 53:09Gavin Winstadt did leave and they brought in Athena or you,
- 53:13you said his name Perfect. I'm terribly I don't know the
- 53:17Greek kid, the Greek kid. That's what I want to call other
- 53:20Greek kid We keep. Going down, yeah.
- 53:22Yeah. But what was the thought?
- 53:24Because like with us, Winstadt, I mean, he gashed us last year
- 53:27with some of those read options, some of those, you know, like
- 53:30quarterback sweeps. And for us, we're looking like
- 53:33he's gone. Wait a second, there goes the
- 53:36running element away. I think, you know, for the
- 53:39longest time Rutgers and there's been these debates in football
- 53:42circles, you know, Rutgers has a a chance to get athletes at the
- 53:46quarterback position given their recruiting territory.
- 53:49And should we go for a dual threat quarterback?
- 53:51We finally do it with Gavin, who happens to be from Kentucky.
- 53:54I, I, I really like the kid, quite frankly.
- 53:57He came in young, he was developing, he had wheels and he
- 54:00had the arm talent. The thing was, as the season
- 54:03progressed, I think Rutgers fans thought that, wow, we're in a
- 54:08better position in 2023 than we actually expected to be.
- 54:11We're a little bit ahead of schedule and if you look at some
- 54:14of the the games down the stretch, get bowl eligible
- 54:18fairly early. Everybody expected it because of
- 54:20the way the schedule, you know, shook out that we would lose a
- 54:23lot of games towards the end of the year.
- 54:25But nonetheless, it kind of takes its toll on the fan base.
- 54:27And they're saying if we could have completed a pass here, this
- 54:31guy was wide open there. There were accuracy issues with
- 54:34Gavin Wimset that were hard to deny.
- 54:36Now. I loved the player and I
- 54:38actually was still rooting for him.
- 54:39They bring in at 8th and Caliac Manis and I'm rooting for for
- 54:43Gavin to continue to progress and to win the quarterback
- 54:45competition. But after spring ball and even
- 54:48during the spring game, you know, it's just evident that
- 54:52Athens landing simple passes, you know, screen passes, quick
- 54:57slants, passes that get the ball in the hands of I think some
- 55:01pretty talented playmakers that given the running game, if you
- 55:05could protect the ball. And Gavin wasn't a turnover
- 55:08machine. He just wasn't completing his
- 55:10passes at a high enough clip. If you can be a little more
- 55:12accurate and land the ball in the hands of your playmakers
- 55:16early in a play, I think Rutgers thought they had a chance to be
- 55:19even better. And after spring ball, Schiano
- 55:22talked with Gavin, from what I understand, and the competition
- 55:25wasn't even close. So Gavin was afforded the chance
- 55:27to go elsewhere. Now you lose something with the
- 55:30wheels with Athan Kelly, Mattis. Now he can look at, there's
- 55:33designed runs. He has some wheels, not the same
- 55:36type of wheels. From watching the first two
- 55:39weeks. There could be issues where you
- 55:42know, Gavin wouldn't have thrown it or would have thrown it away.
- 55:44Maybe Athan's trying to sneak it in there At the same time.
- 55:48There's a lot. The ball is on the numbers, the
- 55:50ball's on time and it's on time and on the numbers at a much
- 55:54greater clip than we saw with Gavin.
- 55:55So it's a different attribute from the quarterback position,
- 56:00but it's I think Rutgers thinks anyway.
- 56:02And Kirk Shiraka thinks it's beneficial because now the
- 56:05ball's in the hand of your playmakers.
- 56:06Gavin was a playmaker. So it's give and take, but.
- 56:09Yeah, Yeah. So you're losing some of that
- 56:11dynamic playmaking ability, but you're upping the chance of
- 56:14getting the ball more quickly and accurately to your other
- 56:16playmakers in that offense. So like you said, some give and
- 56:20take there. Since you talked about the
- 56:21playmakers, who were some of the other playmakers on this
- 56:24offense? Well, what's interesting is I
- 56:26was going to kind of, and I thank you for the segue there
- 56:28too. I mean, Christian Dremel was the
- 56:29leading receiver on the team last year.
- 56:32He's now the 4th receiver on the team.
- 56:34I mean, and that just kind of shows how much they tried to
- 56:37build up that playmaking talent. Now, Chris Long, who broke a
- 56:42bunch of high school records in New Jersey, he's a junior.
- 56:45He's been with the team for quite some time, but he
- 56:47constantly would run into injury problems.
- 56:49Every year. He's a deep ball threat.
- 56:51He had a long touchdown against Akron the other week and he's
- 56:56back in the starting lineup. He's on the edge.
- 56:59Damir Miller comes up a level from Monmouth University.
- 57:03He was the leading, I think he was a leading Mac receiver last
- 57:07year and he came up and he's been in the slot.
- 57:10He's been a really, really good at getting separation, coming
- 57:13back for the ball. He knows the intricacies of
- 57:15route running and he's actually been a really good asset to the
- 57:19team. Dremel was kind of playing that
- 57:21position and now he's the backup.
- 57:24And then you have Ian Strong, who was from Long Island.
- 57:28He's a sophomore. Last year you saw some flashes.
- 57:33He's a bigger bodied receiver. He can get open.
- 57:36He has good hands. You saw some flashes last year,
- 57:39especially in the red zone. And now this year he's taking
- 57:42the next step. I mean, his body has changed a
- 57:44lot. He's really come into his own
- 57:46and he's playing on the edge. So those three guys in addition
- 57:50to Manungai are are an interesting bunch.
- 57:54And then you have Fletcher, the tight end who was a converted D
- 57:57end D lineman and he's got two touchdowns through two weeks.
- 58:04Victor Konopka's the other tight end.
- 58:05You look at their blocking abilities and you know they're
- 58:09still developing in that realm. But as far as going out and
- 58:12catching the ball, Fletcher's been a pleasant surprise and a
- 58:15nice addition. So watch for him to come out in
- 58:19the flat. You know, they like to set that
- 58:20up to you're looking at the guys downfield, you got the play
- 58:24fake. All the sudden Kyle is going to
- 58:26block and Fletcher's breaking off into the flat.
- 58:29He's got two touchdowns that way.
- 58:30So they like those short passes. They like to get the ball in the
- 58:33hands of these athletes and run, run it that way.
- 58:37Larry, you know, something that's been a little bit more
- 58:39impressive to me as well and Amy didn't mention is the backup
- 58:42running back. I think it's Raymond when
- 58:44Menonga goes out and he's catching a breather.
- 58:47I mean, y'all's backup running back is getting 5 yards to carry
- 58:50as well. So it's just kind of a
- 58:52implication to what your offensive line is doing.
- 58:55I mean, again, like I said about our team, doesn't matter who you
- 58:59play, it matters about you. Like you can play in the in the
- 59:03country, if you're not doing what you're supposed to do,
- 59:05you're not going to be effective.
- 59:06Anybody getting 5 yards of carry, it looks like that
- 59:09offensive line is pushing. So again, I know you didn't
- 59:12mention that name, but that was one of the names that I looked
- 59:15at. And if your if your running
- 59:17backs doing good, your start running backs doing good and
- 59:20your backup running backs coming in and they're getting 5 yards
- 59:22of carry somebody's blocking. And, and just to your point too,
- 59:26he's. Actually, the third when when
- 59:28Sam Brown is healthy, Sam Brown's number 2, Raymond's
- 59:31number three, and then you have Benjamin, who got some run last
- 59:34year. But great point.
- 59:35I mean, when I look at those first two games, I'm trying to
- 59:38glean what I can from the way we executed, the way Rutgers
- 59:41executed and not so much on the opponent.
- 59:44There were some things obviously, that I was critical
- 59:46of, but then some things look good.
- 59:47That offensive line has come a very long way from being really
- 59:52undersized in the Big 10 a couple years ago, really getting
- 59:55manhandled and pushed around to last year really took root where
- 59:59against Ohio State before they pulled away in the second-half.
- 1:00:02I mean, we were running the ball well on them.
- 1:00:04And that offensive line returns a bunch of starters too.
- 1:00:08And so, you know, you got Big Holland Pierce on the ending.
- 1:00:11Might be a A draft pick. You have Zelinskis, who's
- 1:00:15another interior lineman, a center that's another Greek name
- 1:00:19trying to get right. But you called me right.
- 1:00:23I'm like I. Got.
- 1:00:24I got on curves for the for the Athena and now look at me with
- 1:00:27the S and Hey Larry, when I sent you over the the.
- 1:00:29Outline there you saw I had the pronunciations in there there's
- 1:00:32a reason I was going to compliment you Sir on that and I
- 1:00:34was like you know I. Need I need to do that for my
- 1:00:38guests and whatnot because it it's helpful.
- 1:00:40Sometimes you're looking at a name, you're like, oh boy, what
- 1:00:42am I going to do? I'm going to get this right.
- 1:00:44We got to, we got to get Larry off here, y'all?
- 1:00:46I just because, I mean, we just called him in a lie, he said.
- 1:00:49They're undersized. And then we look at Holland
- 1:00:51Pearce and he's 68350. Nothing.
- 1:00:55Nothing. About that, man says.
- 1:00:57Undersized. No.
- 1:00:58So he's a big. So they were undersized.
- 1:01:00Line, he was one of the first guys who they were just looking
- 1:01:02for big bodies. So he's a kid from Trenton
- 1:01:05showed up, the story goes, you know, in the parking lot and I'm
- 1:01:08sure it was arranged or whatever, but really needed a
- 1:01:10lot of development, you know, with his body, with his skills.
- 1:01:13And this coaching staff has developed him and he is a you,
- 1:01:17you sitting like my seats are pretty close and I'm looking
- 1:01:19this dude is towering over everybody and he's a big man.
- 1:01:23So it started with him and then they kind of they really built
- 1:01:26that line. So it's a testament now that we
- 1:01:28can run the ball the way we are. It's it's the the old line.
- 1:01:31And I say this in any football conversation I'm in.
- 1:01:34I know you guys brought it up. So you already know starts in
- 1:01:36the trenches, man. And the fact that the trenches
- 1:01:38have been much better. That's why Rutgers is is better
- 1:01:41right now. Yeah.
- 1:01:42So much you got. Yeah, well, well, tally kind.
- 1:01:45Of took my question because I wanted.
- 1:01:46To ask how that how that running back trio kind of plays off each
- 1:01:49other. It seems like they've all got
- 1:01:50some pretty good, pretty good skill sets.
- 1:01:52But I'll go with this. I think we we know Rutgers
- 1:01:56statistically has has had a great start to the season.
- 1:01:59I think the big knock is the quality of competition, which
- 1:02:02is, you know, always tricky to evaluate when you're early in
- 1:02:04the season. Even though they played some
- 1:02:06inferior teams. I mean, look, they'd be accurate
- 1:02:08by 42. You know, Tech struggled with
- 1:02:10ODU for a little bit. So, you know, don't don't take a
- 1:02:1342.1 for granted. But can you see the team, even
- 1:02:18though they're, they're playing lesser opponents?
- 1:02:19Can you, can you see the, I guess the talent there and, and
- 1:02:23and kind of, you know, maintain that optimism that you guys are
- 1:02:26in for a pretty good season, even though, like we said, not
- 1:02:29the not the murderous Rd. here, but can you just see the the
- 1:02:31potential there that that you've you've shown through two games?
- 1:02:35Yeah, I think it's a great question.
- 1:02:37Too. And I think starting off the
- 1:02:39season, because this is the first time we're not in the Big
- 1:02:4210 E so there's no Ohio State, there's no Michigan, there's no
- 1:02:46Penn State on the schedule. Now you you insert a couple West
- 1:02:49Coast teams that are very talented.
- 1:02:50You got to go on the road to USC.
- 1:02:53But when you look at the schedule and the bye weeks and
- 1:02:56you know the travel schedule with West Coast to East Coast, a
- 1:02:59lot of optimism in Rutgers circles, you know that this
- 1:03:02could be one of the better years we've had in a while.
- 1:03:05I think oddly, despite the the way we play those first two
- 1:03:10teams, I don't think there is negativity.
- 1:03:14But what I would say is some of the realities.
- 1:03:18Of the team like this is. Still real life, right?
- 1:03:20And I, I think I predicted a nine and three season, which is
- 1:03:23on the optimistic. So I think it's, it's, it's
- 1:03:27feasible. People were saying 10 and two
- 1:03:29people were, I say it was anywhere from 5:00 and 7:00 to
- 1:03:3210:00 and 2:00 because so many of these games are toss UPS.
- 1:03:35It's the first time in a while. But I'll say that like when you
- 1:03:37actually see it on the field now, now you see the good and
- 1:03:40you see the bad and you see the reality and there hasn't been
- 1:03:43anything per SE bad. But I think like when you see
- 1:03:48Rutgers go up against Howard and Athan Khaliq, Manis is just
- 1:03:51throwing the ball everywhere and everything's pinpoint accurate.
- 1:03:53You're getting excited. But then you come back the next
- 1:03:55week and he's squeezing balls in the first half into double
- 1:03:58coverage. We get lucky on a touchdown
- 1:04:00catch where it ricochets off of somebody and then he throws an
- 1:04:04interception while he's getting hit.
- 1:04:06I just think some things the receivers are talented, they're
- 1:04:10good, but they're you know, Howard played them tough and
- 1:04:13they Akron played them tough in the beginning of that game.
- 1:04:15They there was some separation issues.
- 1:04:17So I could be being NID picky, but I think we're seeing some
- 1:04:24just reality. And so I think I'm still very
- 1:04:28optimistic about the season, but I'm I'm watching for the first
- 1:04:30true test now, which is this week, like the first, you know,
- 1:04:34real game that you know, and we always had it circled like this
- 1:04:37is this is where it starts. I'm just really sheerly curious,
- 1:04:41you know, Nice. Well, let's pivot.
- 1:04:44We've you've given us a ton of information on offense to
- 1:04:46players to watch the scheme, to look for the backgrounds of
- 1:04:49these guys and that's what we're here for man.
- 1:04:52So we can know more about Rutgers for us, we call it know
- 1:04:54the enemy. You have given us a very good
- 1:04:59description of what you guys want to do on offense.
- 1:05:01Let's look at the defense. Defensive coordinator.
- 1:05:04Brian, you did the pronunciation.
- 1:05:05I'm going to try my best here. Joe Harasimiak, very close.
- 1:05:10OK, Samiak. Harasimiak.
- 1:05:12Samiak, Harasimiak. How I talk.
- 1:05:15This is Harasimiak. Yeah, I was going to say, Larry,
- 1:05:19I was going to. Say I think that you're wasting
- 1:05:21your talent trying to do football podcast.
- 1:05:24You should just get on TikTok and like eat food and review it.
- 1:05:28Like you'll make some money because of your accent, man.
- 1:05:31Like you just sound like a wise guy, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:05:34Like come on, man, go get you some pizza and eat it on TikTok
- 1:05:37and you're going to make millions of dollars.
- 1:05:38What are you doing? I like that I got to get on
- 1:05:40TikTok bro. I've been I've been holding out
- 1:05:43for so long and get on TikTok and eat you'll be good.
- 1:05:48So tell me how this defense eats what, what, what have they were
- 1:05:51running. I had a pivot.
- 1:05:53So I love that pivot. That's a beautiful.
- 1:05:56Pivot so Joe Joe comes in from Minnesota as well and he's he's
- 1:06:01he's done really, really well here.
- 1:06:04They run an interesting four to five defense where you got 2
- 1:06:10linebackers and it relies on a lot of athleticism from the
- 1:06:13linebackers. You have 3 safeties, one of whom
- 1:06:16is a quasi linebacker and that's, you know, you're going
- 1:06:19to have Flip Dixon or you're going to have Igbinosa and
- 1:06:22they're going to sneak up. They're going to kind of get in
- 1:06:25there in the mid level of that defense sometimes and and and
- 1:06:28confront the run or cover somebody in the short passing
- 1:06:32lanes. The linebacker core is a really
- 1:06:36interesting thing for Rutgers right now because you started
- 1:06:39the season preseason with Motoray, who was maybe our best
- 1:06:42player on defense last year. Sack leader, really great story.
- 1:06:47He he goes down for the season before it even starts.
- 1:06:50So he's out and and he was a Rutgers likes to because it's a
- 1:06:55425. It's such an interesting
- 1:06:56defense. It's such a a multiple look
- 1:06:58defense. They like to move guys around.
- 1:07:00So he would sneak up on passing downs onto the edge and all
- 1:07:03these things. Now he's gone.
- 1:07:05Tyrene Powell, who was arguably maybe the best defender on the
- 1:07:08entire team last year. He goes down last year against
- 1:07:12Ohio State, then sustains another injury like an Achilles
- 1:07:15in the offseason. He, I believe, is going to be
- 1:07:19able to go this week, but I'm not positive on that Now.
- 1:07:24I knew that there was a chance he could start the season, but I
- 1:07:27always said he's not going to. You're not going to see him
- 1:07:29until Virginia Tech. I don't know if we're going to
- 1:07:32see him, but there's rumblings we might.
- 1:07:36There's now. So Moses Walker and Jabomi,
- 1:07:39those are the two guys that were kind of stepping up for them.
- 1:07:42Moses Walker, a New York kid, was a flip from Penn State,
- 1:07:47showing a lot of flashes, still learning the position.
- 1:07:49As far as being in position. Jabomi had a great game against
- 1:07:52Howard, struggled more against Akron.
- 1:07:55A lot's going to come down to those linebackers and their
- 1:07:57horizontal play. If Powell plays, it bodes better
- 1:08:00for the defense. Safeties.
- 1:08:03I, I love Shaquan Loyal is, is somebody who lays, hits hard,
- 1:08:07comes up with the ball when it's when it's coming his way.
- 1:08:11Flip Dixon, another another guy who's been very good for this
- 1:08:15team. He's had some injury troubles
- 1:08:16early in the year, but he's back at it and Igmanosa and like I
- 1:08:21said, is another talented player.
- 1:08:23So the other thing to watch is Wesley Bailey, one of our ends
- 1:08:27on defense. He's been hurt.
- 1:08:28He's been out the first two weeks I predicted him to be the
- 1:08:32sack leader with Toray out. I when he's not hurt and dinged
- 1:08:36up, his motor is probably the best on the team right now.
- 1:08:40He's a good rusher, good pass rusher, very good pass rusher.
- 1:08:44Aaron Lewis on the other side, the interior guys, we're still
- 1:08:47waiting to see who really flashes.
- 1:08:50Malcolm Ray had a sack up the middle in the interior of the
- 1:08:52defense last week. I mean two weeks ago.
- 1:08:55So we're seeing how they develop.
- 1:08:57But it's a it's an interesting defense going to give you
- 1:08:59multiple looks. You're going to rely on those
- 1:09:02linebackers roaming around in that mid level, and if they
- 1:09:04can't do it, running lanes are going to get open at some point,
- 1:09:07especially to the outside. Passing lanes can open up and
- 1:09:10the intermediate passes, which you know, then the safeties
- 1:09:13might make the play, but you might be moving down the field.
- 1:09:16A lot comes down to that linebacker play because they got
- 1:09:18to hold down a lot of space and that safety play.
- 1:09:20So one more thing I'll say is our pass rush as far as sacks
- 1:09:26has not been where we wanted it last year or the beginning of
- 1:09:29this year. And a lot of that, I think comes
- 1:09:31down to Bailey coming back and then Lewis on the other side
- 1:09:34being able to close out some of his pressures.
- 1:09:36We'll see if that happens, especially against the mobile
- 1:09:39quarterback who can make plays this week.
- 1:09:40So yeah, I know you had mentioned that when we were we.
- 1:09:44Were talking earlier, you know the concern is, you know, I
- 1:09:48mentioned that we've for the most part had some struggles
- 1:09:51from a pass protection standpoint.
- 1:09:53You're like we have well we haven't done a very good job of
- 1:09:55getting to the quarterback. So it may be a little weakness
- 1:09:59on weakness from a defensive versus offensive standpoint
- 1:10:02there. Sean, what you got?
- 1:10:04Yeah. So I wanted to ask.
- 1:10:05About the cornerbacks and 1st off, I want to give a shout out
- 1:10:08to 1 of Rutgers's cornerbacks. That is Robert Longer Beam, the
- 1:10:12pride of Alexandria, VA. He was part of that 2020
- 1:10:16Virginia high school football class that was, to be polite, a
- 1:10:19little bit underwhelming. Antoine Powell Ryland was also
- 1:10:22part of that class. So you got two guys from that
- 1:10:24class going against each other. I remember looking him up last
- 1:10:28year when when Tech and Rutgers played, probably I would say
- 1:10:32maybe one of the best three or four players in that entire
- 1:10:34class, even though he wasn't the most highly regarded recruit.
- 1:10:36But shout out to him. But one of your stud
- 1:10:39quarterbacks is Eric Rodgers. He's a fifth year senior, ranked
- 1:10:436th in the country among all defensive backs in overall grade
- 1:10:46at 87. Hasn't really been targeted
- 1:10:48much. I would imagine that's because
- 1:10:49he's not letting guys get open very much and top ten in
- 1:10:52coverage grade as well. So talk about Rodgers, what he
- 1:10:55does well, his best skill sets and just how you feel like the
- 1:10:58the coverage defense has played out so far.
- 1:11:01You know, longer beam, I thought.
- 1:11:02We had Max Melton last year who went to the the league this year
- 1:11:06and his brother, obviously Beau Melton and and I thought longer
- 1:11:10being longer Beam has been just such a good player for us.
- 1:11:14And they weren't even really throwing his way a lot last year
- 1:11:17because he was such a shutdown corner.
- 1:11:20There's some story that he I guess he left campus.
- 1:11:22He wasn't going to commit or Schiano like followed him, like
- 1:11:25flew down there, went to his family's house.
- 1:11:27Like I mean, very highly sought after by by this coaching staff.
- 1:11:32They're very high on him as the Riemann beam podcast that he
- 1:11:36does too. So look him.
- 1:11:38And so Rogers comes in and steps up into Melton's position and I
- 1:11:42think people were pretty high on him.
- 1:11:43He kind of developed last year and in times when he had to step
- 1:11:48in, started performing quite well.
- 1:11:50I think people predicted early in the season that he would come
- 1:11:53up with some interceptions because they were going to throw
- 1:11:56away from longer beam. And if they're throwing at
- 1:11:58Rogers, he's going to come away with some.
- 1:12:00I believe he came away with one, I think one of the first two
- 1:12:02weeks. And my, my brain is all over the
- 1:12:04place now that's late. But he's a ball hawk and he's
- 1:12:07going to be able to to stay on guys and he might take a gamble
- 1:12:11here and there to grab the ball, But if he does, he'll come away
- 1:12:13with it. And those guys are both very
- 1:12:16talented and, and the fact that Max left it was highly regarded
- 1:12:21and we were able to fill that pretty quickly is a testament to
- 1:12:25the depth on the team. And then behind them it gets a
- 1:12:28little more dicey because you have like Al Shadiz Salaam who
- 1:12:32was a running back converted. So it it gets a little dicey
- 1:12:36behind them, but they they are quick, they are going to be able
- 1:12:38to cover. They need to be in position and
- 1:12:41not take gamble's. We had another long kind of
- 1:12:43couple long passes the first couple weeks of the season and
- 1:12:47some blown coverages and things. One of them might have been
- 1:12:49loyal or the safety's fault on a, on a corner blitz, but
- 1:12:53they're going to try to grab that ball and they're going to
- 1:12:55try to stay on guys. They have the speed, they can
- 1:12:57stay with them, they have the hands.
- 1:12:59They're all going to hit. They all can tackle and they
- 1:13:02come up and and they make tackles and they're not going to
- 1:13:04be afraid to try to stop somebody for a short gain after
- 1:13:07a catch. But but that's the tale of those
- 1:13:10two guys. Yeah.
- 1:13:12And you've got you've. Got Rodgers You.
- 1:13:14Weren't lying. Y'all's first score of the
- 1:13:16season was his pick 6 versus Howard.
- 1:13:18I thought it was 52 yards and the Tyrene Powell we, we talked
- 1:13:22about Tyrene Powell a ton last year in the preview.
- 1:13:24Tyrene Powell was a hokey commit, flipped to Rutgers very
- 1:13:28late in the process. And he led in in the game last
- 1:13:30year, he led the team in tackle. So for us, it's like, I'm glad
- 1:13:35he doesn't have those few games to get ready for Tech because
- 1:13:38coming in cold at linebacker, are you reading your keys right?
- 1:13:41Are you going to the right gaps? Are you missing assignments?
- 1:13:44Do you know where you need to go?
- 1:13:44So that's a big thing. So let me ask this as a Rutgers
- 1:13:49fan, you're sitting here and obviously you and Brian had the
- 1:13:51discussion. You're probably looking at
- 1:13:53tapes, stats, data. What is concerning you most with
- 1:13:56the Scarlet Knights heading into lane on Saturday afternoon, the
- 1:14:02defense containing. You know your offensive scheme
- 1:14:06and and a mobile quarterback who can make plays off script and on
- 1:14:11script. The fact is, and I was talking
- 1:14:14to Brian a little bit, you know, this, this RPO, this spread run
- 1:14:18type offense, linebackers are concerned because of health and
- 1:14:22because of rust for us and containing a running
- 1:14:26quarterback. The first week against Howard,
- 1:14:29Scroggins got out of that pocket and he made plays downfield and
- 1:14:33he was able to escape a bunch. And you know, for a defense that
- 1:14:38relies on that horizontal speed to be able to contain guys who's
- 1:14:41got a guy coming off an injury and another guy out, other guys
- 1:14:44learning that linebacker position, you're going to have
- 1:14:48to that D line. If they get back there, they're
- 1:14:51going to have to understand that you can't, you know, if they
- 1:14:53dive at him too quick or they let him get outside.
- 1:14:56Now where's that linebacker help the secondary?
- 1:14:59Like I said, we're running, you know, that many three safety.
- 1:15:03So so they can get up there and they can keep an eye on him and
- 1:15:06they have the closing speed. But I'm worried about that
- 1:15:10offense, you know, the way it's going to spread them out and the
- 1:15:14way that quarterback is going to be able to make plays off script
- 1:15:18anywhere in the middle of that defense or the middle of the
- 1:15:20field, that could cause Rutgers problems.
- 1:15:22And I think that it's the 1st Rd. game of the year.
- 1:15:27The environment is obviously well known.
- 1:15:30And so you're going into a rough environment.
- 1:15:33And I talked to Brian about this.
- 1:15:35If there's a big play that gets Rutgers on their heels, they
- 1:15:38want to, they want to be a ball control offense.
- 1:15:40They want to run the ball incrementally down the field and
- 1:15:43take their shots when they're available.
- 1:15:45If they get on their heels where there's a big player to and the
- 1:15:49crowds into it and they're not able to establish that running
- 1:15:53offense and incrementally get down the field or a couple
- 1:15:56drives stall in that way, I think that could be a problem
- 1:16:00because if they get behind too much, they're just not built to
- 1:16:03sling the ball all over the field.
- 1:16:05And so I think the way those two teams are built, it's going to
- 1:16:09be really interesting. I was telling Brian this exact
- 1:16:11thing. Who establishes their identity
- 1:16:13first? Are we establishing, you know, a
- 1:16:15run RPO type system where there's quick strikes and
- 1:16:18there's a quarterback that's making plays?
- 1:16:20Or are we establishing this a between the tackles, Rutgers
- 1:16:25type thing where, you know, we're going to laboriously get
- 1:16:29down the field and try to control the pace of the game,
- 1:16:32but that's going to go a long way in determining the outcome?
- 1:16:37Yeah, I think when. You talk about that.
- 1:16:39A shortened game, a game where the clock is running a lot,
- 1:16:42definitely I think plays into Rutgers favor, much like it did
- 1:16:46when we were playing Vanderbilt down in Nashville where they
- 1:16:50kept the clock moving. They they kept matriculating the
- 1:16:52ball down the field. We couldn't get off the field on
- 1:16:543rd down with that triple option attack.
- 1:16:58If we have a similar situation but with the non guy between the
- 1:17:01tackles, it could be a long day for the Hokies.
- 1:17:05Sheldon, you got something before we flip it over to the
- 1:17:06last question here for Larry. No, I think.
- 1:17:11Yeah, I think I'm good. I know, like I said, the the the
- 1:17:14secondary has been pretty good County Hamilton has been the
- 1:17:17highest grade defensive lineman, So you know, they've been able
- 1:17:19to get some some pretty good pressure again factor in the
- 1:17:21competition, but it just seems like they've been pretty, pretty
- 1:17:24engaged on all fronts. Nice So.
- 1:17:27Let let me ask you this. Larry, before we let you go for
- 1:17:29the night, if you're settling. In for the prime time.
- 1:17:33Games on Saturday night with a big smile on your face.
- 1:17:37What do you think played the biggest factor in that Rutgers
- 1:17:40win containing drones? Containing the quarterback, I
- 1:17:45mean, you do a good job of limiting the damage he does, you
- 1:17:50know, with his, his skill set, which is a wide-ranging 1 flat
- 1:17:54out. I, I, I have seen it just, so it
- 1:17:58just seems that Rutgers, when they're playing their game under
- 1:18:01Schiano, they, they fare well, especially with the way the line
- 1:18:04is now with the power team that, that big 10 line up helmet on
- 1:18:08helmet and play a straight up, they tend to do well.
- 1:18:11What I've seen throughout the years, and this goes all the way
- 1:18:14back with Shiano defenses is when a quarterback is getting
- 1:18:17too much off script and he's making too many things happen on
- 1:18:20his own, they can struggle and they can kind of get bewildered
- 1:18:23a little like what are we doing? Cuz keeping UPS hard.
- 1:18:26That defense can contain him and his damage is limited.
- 1:18:29I think they're going to then be able to establish the run and I
- 1:18:33think they're going to be able to to keep it where they want it
- 1:18:36and then they might be able to pull out a victory at the end.
- 1:18:39So that's what I think the key to victory really is, honestly.
- 1:18:43All right, Larry. We appreciate it, Larry.
- 1:18:45Before we let you go, where can we see the show?
- 1:18:49Where can we follow you on Twitter, Instagram let you get

- 1:20:13I appreciate you coming out with me.
- 1:20:14You guys are awesome. Made my night just kind of
- 1:20:16chilling talking ball with you guys.
- 1:20:18So I'm wishing you guys luck, you know, this week and the rest
- 1:20:21of the year, hopefully hoping we win.
- 1:20:23But I think it'll be a fun season for both of us either
- 1:20:25way. So happy we're playing,
- 1:20:28hopefully play again, you know, and looking forward to it.
- 1:20:31Yeah, we appreciate you taking the time tonight.
- 1:20:33We appreciate you letting Brian come on your show a bit earlier.
- 1:20:36Definitely love being part of the college huddle.
- 1:20:39You guys follow that. They're all out there.
- 1:20:41So many teams to go find out whoever the Hokies are playing
- 1:20:44next week, see how that team's feeling.
- 1:20:46And Larry, from the sound of it, you don't don't talk Rutgers.
- 1:20:49You're talking college ball all the time.
- 1:20:50And we love to hear that man. So take care of yourself up in
- 1:20:53New Jersey and we hopefully see you in the future, man.
- 1:20:55Yes, Sir. Looking forward to.
- 1:20:58It later get that TikTok. Started man.
- 1:21:04See you later. Good.
- 1:21:06See ya. All righty.
- 1:21:07So great segment there with Larry.
- 1:21:09A lot of information about the players, about what they're
- 1:21:11doing up there. Got to love to see it again.
- 1:21:15It's great being part of this network.
- 1:21:16We can bring people on or in our case, Brian, going on sharing a
- 1:21:20little bit back and forth. So we got a lot of stuff from
- 1:21:23Larry. I, I, I don't know if we've
- 1:21:25changed any of our keys up, but y'all, we got to jump into what
- 1:21:28our hokey keys are for this week and I'm going to lead it off
- 1:21:33with us. Jonathan, Tally, tally, what is
- 1:21:36going to be the hokey keys for taking the dub this week?
- 1:21:38Oh yeah, It was going to be the same for me no matter what.
- 1:21:40But definitely, you know, reiterated what Larry was
- 1:21:43talking about. Like we have to let Karen be
- 1:21:45Karen. He's not a drop back passer.
- 1:21:48He's not anybody else besides Karen.
- 1:21:52The big bruising runs that he has, he had one, you know, at
- 1:21:55Rutgers last year and he has had one against ODU.
- 1:21:59They got to let him get outside the pocket.
- 1:22:00They got to let him run the ball.
- 1:22:02They got to let him get some contact that's going to open up
- 1:22:05the pass game. Because if we just try to drop
- 1:22:08back and pass the ball and drop back and hand the ball off, it
- 1:22:11might not fare so well. So let Karen be Karen is my keys
- 1:22:15to success. Sheldon, what about you?
- 1:22:18Man, what is your hokey? Keys This week I went with
- 1:22:22establishing the run to set up the.
- 1:22:23Pass I think Tech is a team that has to run the ball well to be
- 1:22:26effective in passing game. Like Bryant, like we've been
- 1:22:29saying, we want drones to to roll out, you know, to use RPO
- 1:22:33effectively. And only way you can do that is
- 1:22:35if there's a threat of, you know, a credible threat of run
- 1:22:38game. So if they get the run and
- 1:22:39going, I think that's going to make things a lot easier on
- 1:22:42drones and hopefully they can put some points on the board.
- 1:22:45All righty, Mr. Bron Siegler. What is your Hokie key this
- 1:22:49week? Yeah, for me, it's it's I'm
- 1:22:51flipping it over to the. Defensive side, yeah, I think
- 1:22:54the offense might take care of itself against this Rutgers
- 1:22:58defense. I'm worried about what they're
- 1:23:00going to do with the running game, shortening the game,
- 1:23:03staying on the field, not letting our defense get off the
- 1:23:05field. So for me, the big thing is no
- 1:23:07long runs and be able to get off the field on 3rd down.
- 1:23:11If we can do that, I feel pretty confident about coming out of
- 1:23:14this one with AW. All righty, I'm going to kind of
- 1:23:16get mine in here and. It goes back to how we've been
- 1:23:19playing this year. First quarter we have outscored
- 1:23:22our opponents 21 to three, that's plus 18.
- 1:23:25Quarter three, we've outscored our opponents 30 to 10, that's a
- 1:23:29+ 20. Quarter four, 3814 + 24.
- 1:23:35The second quarter is the undoing of this team this year
- 1:23:39and we've been outscored in three games, 31 to 3:00 that is
- 1:23:46minus. 28 that is. An insane number.
- 1:23:49And I go look back last year playing Rutgers, they outscored
- 1:23:52us in the second quarter fourteen to three.
- 1:23:55I think it's going to come down to what we do in the second
- 1:23:58quarter. Our coaches have a propensity
- 1:24:00for having great halftime adjustments where we get people
- 1:24:03in the rhythm. I am very glad that we got off
- 1:24:06of that hot start off at of OU because it proves to me that we
- 1:24:10can move the ball early second quarter.
- 1:24:13If we come out even in the second quarter, I don't care for
- 1:24:1777101033 nil, NIL. We are going to win this game
- 1:24:22and that. Leads us right.
- 1:24:24Into our hokey predictions and I'm going to go first just
- 1:24:29because I want to go 1st and what I got, what I look.
- 1:24:34At is. When they played us last year up
- 1:24:36in Piscataway, it is Piscataway NJ.
- 1:24:39That was Karen Drones first start as a college quarterback
- 1:24:44first start. They had Grant Lemstadt, who was
- 1:24:50a. Running quarterback who we have
- 1:24:52known forever as a Virginia Tech Hokie fan, what is our
- 1:24:56kryptonite? If you have a running
- 1:24:57quarterback, it's going to kill us.
- 1:24:59Larry already said it. He couldn't pass last year at
- 1:25:02all. That was fine last year.
- 1:25:04We had one of the best pass defenses in the country last
- 1:25:06year regardless. So you take away the wheels, you
- 1:25:10put a guy back there who can do design runs for, but he can't
- 1:25:14scramble. You can't run a read option.
- 1:25:16I think we're going to flip it. I think we're going to score a
- 1:25:19couple more points in them. Give me Hokies 28.
- 1:25:26You went on mute again bud. You going?
- 1:25:31I'll take this next one here. I I'm in the similar boat with
- 1:25:35Curtis here. I I don't think it's going to
- 1:25:37quite be a the full boat. Eight points there, but I think
- 1:25:42the Hokies are going to do enough on offense and just
- 1:25:44enough on defense. It's going to come down to the
- 1:25:46wire though. But give me the Hokies 27,
- 1:25:49Rutgers 23, Sheldon Moss. I'm going with a pretty similar
- 1:25:55score to Curse here. I've got the Hokies 2720
- 1:25:58winning. I feel like this team responds
- 1:26:00when the chips are down and people are doubting them.
- 1:26:02So I think they'll come out pretty motivated and they're
- 1:26:04going to get a close win at home.
- 1:26:06When Edwin says that they can't do it, the chips.
- 1:26:11I like when Sheldon. Says the chips.
- 1:26:13Cuz I like to go to the casino and play roulette and I like to
- 1:26:17have all the chips. My chips are down.
- 1:26:20I am doubting I got Rutgers winning this game.
- 1:26:23I think it's going to be a close game.
- 1:26:25I'm just going off of off of history for the most part.
- 1:26:30Not so much with Rutgers, just with what we've done in the past
- 1:26:34as well as since prize been here some crazy stat was out.
- 1:26:38We haven't won a non conference game and however many days
- 1:26:44pretty much since 2017 and it just brought up all the fields
- 1:26:49of me being in the stadium. We're playing Purdue last year
- 1:26:53and everything that can go wrong goes wrong.
- 1:26:55The hurricane comes through, we are out in the rain for six
- 1:26:59hours and hiding and don't know if it's going to be and then we
- 1:27:03go into the game and we lose a heartbreaker.
- 1:27:05Then we go to Nashville and we lose another heartbreaker.
- 1:27:08I just think it's going to be a close game.
- 1:27:11Rutgers takes it 2417. I'm praying that I'm wrong, but
- 1:27:15that's my prediction as of now. We got to go with what you feel,
- 1:27:19man, so. We're going to be flipping it
- 1:27:21over here to big screeners in just a second, but y'all out
- 1:27:25there who are watching, it's quite a few of y'all tonight.
- 1:27:27Throw your prediction, what you think the scores are going to be
- 1:27:30for the Hokies game. So again, you got me, Brian and
- 1:27:35Shelton, leaning Hokies, tally leaning Rutgers, all of us
- 1:27:40within at least one score. So we don't get you, liquor get
- 1:27:45you. Everybody's flirting in the 20s
- 1:27:46too there, no? Nobody's predicting a high
- 1:27:48scoring affair here. I don't we'll see that, but they
- 1:27:51think the under I think. Whatever the under is, I think
- 1:27:53it. Is it what, 51?
- 1:27:54The last time I looked I can pull that up I.
- 1:27:57Got it right here on the phone. I think I do if y'all.
- 1:28:01Can get to it quicker. Somebody scream it.
- 1:28:03Out before me 44 1/2 Oh, it's went down, so it's went down.
- 1:28:07Significantly, just like the line.
- 1:28:09Started 4 1/2. Now it's down, But you know,
- 1:28:12we're going to see. We're going to see.
- 1:28:14I think this is a big make and break game for the Hokies in
- 1:28:17what we can do this season. So let's flip to it and let's
- 1:28:20get the big screeners. Let's talk about some other
- 1:28:23games we might be laying a little action on and some games
- 1:28:26we'll definitely be keeping an eye on throughout the day on
- 1:28:28Saturday. Brian Siegler, as always, you
- 1:28:31lead this segment. Sir, where we going?
- 1:28:34I went to Oklahoma, baby. Tennessee, Oklahoma, the
- 1:28:39Tennessee is favored by 7 1/2 here.
- 1:28:44I don't think it's going to be that close.
- 1:28:45I think Tennessee is going to go out there and and do a little
- 1:28:49number. So give me the the volunteers in
- 1:28:50this one, all right? I'm exactly the opposite.
- 1:28:54Of you on this. One, give me Oklahoma home dog
- 1:28:57getting 7 1/2 points because I looked at Tennessee.
- 1:29:01Anytime they say any formidable offense last year, they couldn't
- 1:29:05get above 20 points. I trust Brent Venables.
- 1:29:08I don't know if Oklahoma will win this game or not, but I do
- 1:29:11not see Tennessee blowing the doors out of them.
- 1:29:13I see this being a close enough game that I'll take the home dog
- 1:29:16at 7 1/2. Sheldon so I saw.
- 1:29:20I saw stat. Earlier this week.
- 1:29:22That this is the first time Oklahoma is a underdog by four
- 1:29:26more points at home since 1998. I think they're going to feel a
- 1:29:30little bit disrespected by it and they're going to come out
- 1:29:32and do just enough to cover tally tally.
- 1:29:36I'll copy Shelton. And I said.
- 1:29:37Oklahoma. There we go, Miranda dropped in.
- 1:29:43Tennessee. And.
- 1:29:45The man with the guitar is taking Tennessee as well.
- 1:29:49Oh, before we get too far, I dropped it in the in the text
- 1:29:54there. You want to give the rundown,
- 1:29:55Curtis, of what we did last week, Week 3.
- 1:29:59Looks as follows. Brian five and one, Curtis five
- 1:30:03and one, Tally and Shelton two and four, Miranda three and
- 1:30:07three, and our gambling guitar man four and two season records.
- 1:30:13Everybody with the exception of Miranda is above 500, so we got
- 1:30:20to get Miranda out of them. Buffalo Wild Wings.
- 1:30:25You can't. You can't.
- 1:30:25You can't. You can't go out, get out of.
- 1:30:27There, make your bet. So there you.
- 1:30:29Go That's where we stand. Right now, if you had bet with
- 1:30:31any of us, if you're crazy enough to do that, most of us
- 1:30:35would have made you a little bit of money, a little bit, very
- 1:30:37little bit. You walk around with an.
- 1:30:39Extra 12 bucks you got, you got enough to put back in next week.
- 1:30:43In other news In other news. Everybody knows I love orange.
- 1:30:46Not Tennessee orange. That's the worst color orange
- 1:30:49that ever was made. When?
- 1:30:50Never wear that orange is hideous.
- 1:30:52Go ahead, Curtis. All right, I am going.
- 1:30:56To take a look at the Michigan State Boston College game, it's
- 1:30:59going to be up in Chestnut Hill. Believe it or not y'all we are
- 1:31:03not the red bandana game. No ACC opponent is the red
- 1:31:06bandana game. I could not find it.
- 1:31:09I actually have a red bandana. My neighbor used to be the tech
- 1:31:13sideline guy. He got 1 so I could explain to
- 1:31:16the boys effectively. You know what that guy did back
- 1:31:18on 9/11 23 years ago? Could not find it.
- 1:31:21They probably got it chucked in their room somewhere and I can't
- 1:31:24find it. But BC coming off damn near
- 1:31:27pulling off the upset in Columbia last week, they only
- 1:31:29lost by 6. We made some money off that.
- 1:31:33This week they're laying 6 1/2 to Michigan State and Brian.
- 1:31:36What do you think? You know what I'm going to keep?
- 1:31:40Riding with the eagles, they're. Doing me good so far.
- 1:31:42I'm not going to change it up. I'm with you.
- 1:31:46Laying 6 1/2 to Michigan. State Michigan State to me under
- 1:31:49Jonathan Smith and new regime up there probably not quite got
- 1:31:52where he wants it yet. So I'll take BC as well.
- 1:31:57I'm a Brian the. Eagles have.
- 1:31:59Not let me down this year. It will not happen this week.
- 1:32:02I like the job Bob is doing. Give me Boston College.
- 1:32:06I got to. Listen to all the Alabama fans.
- 1:32:08And tell me how much they hate Bob.
- 1:32:10So I said I've been betting against him every day, every
- 1:32:13game. So I start.
- 1:32:15Why? You know you got to hit at least
- 1:32:16once, right? I got to stay consistent with
- 1:32:19losing. So I went with Michigan State,
- 1:32:22right? All righty.
- 1:32:24Tally going Michigan. State and Miranda and Jason
- 1:32:27always so coming along with us on the BC.
- 1:32:30Hey Tally, you you riding solo with the Spartans?
- 1:32:32There, man, Ryan, solo man. All right, Sheldon, where are we
- 1:32:36going? We are going to Morgantown West.
- 1:32:39Virginia, I Pike this game because it looks like a pretty
- 1:32:42intriguing match up. Obviously Kansas is off to a
- 1:32:46slow start. I think they've been getting a
- 1:32:47little bit unlucky. It was a close spread, 2 1/2.
- 1:32:50So with that being said, I will take Kansas.
- 1:32:52I think they bounced back from a really tough loss against UNLV
- 1:32:55last week and they get the win in Morgantown.
- 1:33:02I'm I'm actually going to go the other direction.
- 1:33:04Here to use Sheldon, I'm taking Kansas.
- 1:33:09I think they get on the winning track here.
- 1:33:13I think this is going to be an outright win for for The
- 1:33:16Jayhawks. Yeah, same here.
- 1:33:19I'm. With Kansas as well, I think.
- 1:33:20Kansas bounces back. We know Shelton's with.
- 1:33:23Kansas tally? What about?
- 1:33:24You man, I'm going to have to go with W.
- 1:33:27VUI mean I'm probably going to get a little bit from the sister
- 1:33:30before the game, get them hyped up, you know, maybe get a little
- 1:33:34nipple from Grand Mama and have a good game.
- 1:33:40All righty. And Miranda and Jason.
- 1:33:43Little opposite. Miranda, Kansas, Jason.
- 1:33:45West Virginia. Tally, where are you going this
- 1:33:48week, man? I am.
- 1:33:50Going to Utah and O OK State, pretty intriguing game.
- 1:33:57I don't know man, I just like to watch Utah play.
- 1:33:59They seem pretty physical year in and year out, so I love to
- 1:34:03watch Utah play. It's always fun to watch those
- 1:34:05games. I am going Utah in this game
- 1:34:09just for what I said. I just like to watch them play.
- 1:34:11I like the style of football that they play.
- 1:34:15I'm right there with Tally. I'm taking the.
- 1:34:18The Utes here as well. I think they they've played very
- 1:34:22well so far to start the season in in my opinion, I think
- 1:34:25they're going to go in there and probably win by about a
- 1:34:28touchdown in Oklahoma State yeah I'm I'm with y'all too.
- 1:34:33I. Think at physical style, we saw
- 1:34:35Arkansas do it with a, with a, to me, a lesser cohesive team.
- 1:34:41I think Utah goes in there and they do win.
- 1:34:44I'll take the three points. Utah's one of my.
- 1:34:47Favorite non virgin anti team in the country?
- 1:34:49I love the way they play, I love how physical they are.
- 1:34:51But their quarterback Cam Rising was out last week.
- 1:34:54He is expected to play this weekend, but we don't know if
- 1:34:56he's exactly 100% and he might be a little bit rusty.
- 1:34:59So for that reason, being on the road, I'm going to take OK
- 1:35:01State. Miranda's riding with you,
- 1:35:06Sheldon, and. Jason is jumping on board with
- 1:35:09me. Tally and Curtis Righty last.
- 1:35:14One here before we get to the music man, we got Georgia Tech
- 1:35:17traveling to Louisville. This is a massive line.
- 1:35:21I mean massive line. And I'm I'm trying to figure out
- 1:35:24smells stinky. Louisville is laying 10 points
- 1:35:27to Georgia Tech, who I mean has played solid all year.
- 1:35:31So, Brian, what do you think? Yeah, this this is a weird.
- 1:35:36Line I don't know if Vegas knows something that I don't but I
- 1:35:39think this is going to be a close game wire to wire.
- 1:35:41So give me Georgia Tech in this one.
- 1:35:43I swear to God if Haynes King is hurt and.
- 1:35:46We don't find out about it until the 1st snap.
- 1:35:48I am going and saying give me my money back.
- 1:35:50That's bullshit. Give me Georgia Tech, Give me
- 1:35:54the 10. Yes, I'm taking Georgia Tech as
- 1:35:59well. I.
- 1:35:59Just think it's too big of a line.
- 1:36:01I I respect Louisville, but I think Georgia Tech will do just
- 1:36:04enough to cover same I. Feel like that line?
- 1:36:09Is too big. If anything we're going to be
- 1:36:11looking at about a three-point game, maybe 7.
- 1:36:15Give me Georgia Tech, Miranda. Is riding with Georgia.
- 1:36:20Tech as well, and our music man. Is coming.
- 1:36:24In hot on Louisville, laying the 10 points.
- 1:36:31So that gets us to it, man. Our our music man is back.
- 1:36:36He's picked a big one this week. We got the USC Trojans at
- 1:36:40Michigan. So I'm going to let him tell you
- 1:36:43what he thinks about this one. California those.
- 1:37:01Have a party California those. Have.
- 1:37:07A party in the city say come. To.
- 1:37:15Keep it rocking nowhere to keep it rocking California.
- 1:37:24In the city. In the city.
- 1:37:46Welcome to another edition of Guitar Licks.
- 1:37:48And gambling picks. I'm Jason Long, riding a hot
- 1:37:51streak right now, so I'm going to keep it short.
- 1:37:53USC travels to Michigan on Saturday.
- 1:37:55They're laying 6 1/2 points. I think USC is going to win by
- 1:37:58at least a touchdown. So I'm going to go ahead and
- 1:38:00take USC minus 6 1/2 versus Michigan.
- 1:38:04You don't know why Coast, California?
- 1:38:39See you next week. And there it is again, he said,
- 1:38:46laying 6. And a half there taking the
- 1:38:49Trojans and you know what? I'm riding right along with
- 1:38:53that. Give me USC in this one.
- 1:38:56Curtis, what you got? I'm with you on it.
- 1:38:59I've seen. USC play a couple Times Now and
- 1:39:01then, especially after seeing what LSU did down South Carolina
- 1:39:06put up a bunch of points and I know first game and everything
- 1:39:09but I know Alex awards you starting former Hokie committee
- 1:39:13just I I can't see Michigan slowing them down enough even in
- 1:39:18the big house to to to to not lay 6 1/2 points on this game.
- 1:39:26I'm taking Michigan on a hunch. I just.
- 1:39:29I think, I think they're playing at home.
- 1:39:30They'll be they'll be motivated. You know, they they had a pretty
- 1:39:33crappy loss against Texas. So I like teams.
- 1:39:35Sometimes it bounce back when, like I said, the trips are down
- 1:39:37and I think they're going to respond.
- 1:39:41Man, I was going to go UFC. Anyway, but after he and Jason
- 1:39:44come in and sang Californian turning into a country's
- 1:39:47California love and turning into a country song man, he did did
- 1:39:51Roger Troutman a, a, a a great honor.
- 1:39:54So I got to go UFC just because of what Jason did.
- 1:40:00And obviously Miranda, she is also.
- 1:40:02Riding with this Jason obviously taking your.
- 1:40:05Yeah, when, when, when he sent us a message and he's like, I
- 1:40:09got what I'm going to do. We're like, there's so many
- 1:40:12songs about California, what we could do.
- 1:40:13That was the entire Red Heart Hot Chili.
- 1:40:17Peppers you. Know.
- 1:40:19Yeah, that's not what I was expecting.
- 1:40:21When he started going, I'm like perfect curveball.
- 1:40:25Great, great, great. All righty, so throw them.
- 1:40:27All up there. There you go, what it looks
- 1:40:31like. Who got it best?
- 1:40:33Who got it wrong? Me and Curtis are pretty close
- 1:40:36here with our picks top to bottom.
- 1:40:38Curtis and Brian follow each other they.
- 1:40:40Just don't want to they have a bet with each other.
- 1:40:42Neither one of them wants to lose.
- 1:40:44So hey, I'm gonna start getting on my up on the on the 1st pick
- 1:40:48now I win Tennessee. I'm, I'm not, I'm not riding
- 1:40:50straight across, man. Well, I'm trying to look here.
