- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome, Welcome, welcome, folks. It is time now for our
- 0:04community connection right here on K one, the one you
- 0:07trust and with us today we have members of the
- 0:11group called Save our Hospital and we have Mike Died,
- 0:15Kim Owen and Margie Learning here with us. And this
- 0:19is a big deal in a small town when you
- 0:22have your hospital and some changes are going to be made. Now, Mike,
- 0:26I'm going to start with you because this is kind
- 0:28of how I found out about it. You made a
- 0:29call and I just happened to be in the office
- 0:31when that came in. What's your perspective on this? Tell
- 0:35us kind of the setup and what's going on here.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, the setup is that since in Saint John is
- 0:42wanting to convert our hospital to a rural emergency hospital
- 0:48instead of a critical access hospital, and what that means
- 0:52is that they would be reducing all the in bed
- 0:55patient services that they have, so basically about two to
- 1:00the hospital.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Will be closed.
- 1:02Speaker 2: And they cite financial reasons for closing the hospital, but
- 1:08I think more than that it looks to be a
- 1:13bottom line consideration. The critical access hospital is paid at
- 1:19ninety nine percent of cost for Medicare Medicaid and the
- 1:26rural emergency hospital draws a three and a half million dollar.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Check every year, so they.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Think that will put them in.
- 1:37Speaker 3: A very profitable situation.
- 1:41Speaker 2: One thing that they failed to do is commit to
- 1:46the money would come, all the money would come and
- 1:49stay in no water to improve the healthcare and health
- 1:52services there.
- 1:55Speaker 3: They would would not commit to that. In addition, the
- 1:59community is probably.
- 2:01Speaker 2: One of the happier communities with their services that they have.
- 2:08We have a wonderful hospital with wonderful doctors and wonderful employees,
- 2:13nurses that take care of people on a daily basis.
- 2:17Their swing bed system which serves mostly the al relief
- 2:22or rehab and give them time to recover from surgery
- 2:27and stuff is.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Just excellence.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Now, Margine, I'm going to go to you on this one. Here.
- 2:34This doesn't affect just the patients here, but the families
- 2:38who care for people who may be using your hospital.
- 2:40This is really going to put them in a tough spot.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Yes, families will have to travel further to visit relatives
- 2:48that are in the hospital, and that might be hard
- 2:50for them to do, might be pit them out a
- 2:53whole lot. I think that I think everybody believes that
- 2:58if they could be at home in their hometown hospital,
- 3:02that promotes they're getting well. They get well faster if
- 3:06they can be surrounded by their family and friends. And
- 3:11like Mike said.
- 3:13Speaker 4: We love our hospital.
- 3:17Speaker 5: For years and years, it has been outstanding the way
- 3:20they've always taken care of people. The swing bed is
- 3:24very crucial, the acute care is very crucial. I mean,
- 3:30it'd be good, it'll be good have emergency room, but
- 3:33we don't want to go backwards.
- 3:35Speaker 4: We want to.
- 3:36Speaker 5: Keep the services we have. It's been real easy to
- 3:42get volunteers from our community because everybody is on the
- 3:47same side.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Everybody loves that hospital.
- 3:50Speaker 5: It would be difficult for you to go to no
- 3:52on it and ask around and find somebody that would
- 3:55have a negative thing.
- 3:56Speaker 4: To say about our hospital. But we have had.
- 4:00Speaker 5: We've been blessed with lots of volunteers that has come
- 4:03and said what can we do? And we're doing absolutely
- 4:07everything that we can to try to save our hospital.
- 4:12And if you want to do what's best for a community,
- 4:15what's best for our community is to keep it, you know,
- 4:20and the powers that be have said this will be
- 4:23better for the community. They don't know what's good for
- 4:25our community, but we do because we live there and
- 4:29the best thing would be to keep our hospital. It
- 4:33will affect negatively our ambulance service.
- 4:36Speaker 4: I mean it just it.
- 4:38Speaker 5: You know, it's just one entity, but it's going to
- 4:42affect a lot of different things in the community, and
- 4:45not in a good way.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Wow, I'm going to go to Kim Owen here. Kim's
- 4:49got all the fact figures in data here. I want
- 4:52to say, if you're the best fittal head here. When
- 4:56getting this group together, it probably didn't take a whole
- 5:00lot of effort, did it.
- 5:01Speaker 6: It did not. We put a Facebook page out and
- 5:04within hours we had one hundred participants on Facebook within
- 5:10a day. We just grew and grew and grew it
- 5:12and had continued to grow. And so with that Facebook page,
- 5:16we've been putting out that we're having meetings every Monday
- 5:19night at six pm, and we've seen those meetings grow considerably.
- 5:24We always have thirty forty people there at every meeting,
- 5:27and never the same people all full. We also are
- 5:32advertising our July twelfth meeting, that rally I will call it,
- 5:37that we're having appropriate and it's going to be at
- 5:41the Middle School gym in Nowada at music starts at one,
- 5:46the program starts at two. We've got three speakers about
- 5:49seven minutes each. I'm going to tell you kind of
- 5:52where we are, what our future holds, and what can
- 5:55be done by the community to help negate this change.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Is there a petition that's being circulated or is that
- 6:03something that we're going to probably be talking ab outside
- 6:06of it. I didn't want to jump ahead.
- 6:07Speaker 6: No, no, no, that's fine, And that's one of the
- 6:09things that we have all so many of the businesses
- 6:14have put out a petition we're asking everyone to sign.
- 6:17We showed up at the Fourth of July celebration, we
- 6:20showed up at a food contest that the Farmers Market had,
- 6:25and we have I know, I have over five hundred
- 6:29signatures that I counted last night and I haven't even collected.
- 6:33And that's from everybody from the celebration and what people
- 6:39have signed at the meetings and haven't even picked up
- 6:42any of the businesses yet. And so we know we're
- 6:45probably going to have one thousand to fifteen hundred petitions.
- 6:49Those petitions are going to go. We're going to send
- 6:51them to the governor, We're going to send them to
- 6:53our federal Senators and congress and representatives. Because our state
- 6:58representatives stand behind us one hundred percent. We're very happy
- 7:02with their participation, and the local community government officials also,
- 7:09and so we'll send it to them. One of the
- 7:11things we hope that we will be working on, no,
- 7:14that we hope that will happen, is to work on
- 7:17this with that program. The Rural Emergency Hospital program is
- 7:22a federal program and a there's a distinct parts units
- 7:28that they're making these hospitals do where they can't share staff,
- 7:31which is why Ascension has said to us, we're going
- 7:35to shut it down because we can't share the staff
- 7:38and that's a bigger expense. However, Ascension is a nonprofit hospital,
- 7:43so I don't quite understand why they can't do both.
- 7:47But our hope with a petition is to make a
- 7:50change in that program. And we know there's a senator
- 7:53in Kansas, Colorado and Massachusetts who are championing this federally.
- 7:58So if we can get Ascension Saint John depause and
- 8:03maybe we can make some changes like that, they would
- 8:05be able to share staff and be able to keep that, uh,
- 8:09all of our hospital open.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Mike, this doesn't just affect no water proper. There's a
- 8:17lot of smaller communities, a lot of rural that depend
- 8:19on your hospital.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we've got We've got several signatures from the
- 8:23outlying areas, especially.
- 8:25Speaker 3: To the north, that are dependent upon.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Our hospital and the services and provide. You know, and
- 8:32I don't want I don't want to miss a couple
- 8:34of points. In Number one is if you if you
- 8:37are interested, even though you're not in no lot of property,
- 8:41and you you plan on using the hospital, you need
- 8:45the hospital, please show up before two o'clock Sunday afternoon
- 8:51and participate in our unity sign the petition, that sort
- 8:54of thing. And the second point I want to make Look,
- 8:58this is done with no consideration for the community. It
- 9:03was done without notice to the board of directors, it
- 9:06was done without notice to employees. There's no there's been
- 9:10no public discussion, there's been no reaching out to our
- 9:16city and county officials. Look, if this, if this is
- 9:20the best thing for the community, it's not going to
- 9:23be hard to defend.
- 9:25Speaker 3: And you know, if you if you're going to do.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Something like this, at least get out there, work for
- 9:31the community.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Talk to us.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Let's see if we can continue to provide the services together.
- 9:36Let's find somebody to do the answery services that you
- 9:39want to do. If you don't want to continue our
- 9:42healthcare in our community, and that's your business, we understand that,
- 9:48but let's work to go and find somebody that does
- 9:50want to provide those services, because that's what the community
- 9:52wants and needs.
- 9:55Speaker 1: This is a market in market. This has been a
- 9:57highly emotional issue in the community.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Hasn't it exactly?
- 10:03Speaker 5: People are very upset this would take away something that,
- 10:09like Mike said and we've emphasized, is so important to
- 10:12our community. Everybody's got a personal story we do about
- 10:17how the hospital helped the men in time of need,
- 10:20and it's a very popular place for our community, and
- 10:26it is very upsetting. We have taken it personally that
- 10:30they want to close this in our little town, something
- 10:33that we really need.
- 10:35Speaker 1: And once again, Sunday is the big rally point, isn't
- 10:38it correct?
- 10:39Speaker 6: July twelfth, Sunday afternoon at one o'clock, music starts me dinner.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Alrighty, we'll send them in mass I want to thank
- 10:49you for coming in and sharing this very important issue
- 10:53with folks who may not even know that this is
- 10:56going on in your community. But it sounds like everybody's
- 10:59at the said their ear to the ground a little
- 11:01bit by the number of people who've signed petitions already
- 11:04without a whole lot of prompting, good luck and thank
- 11:07you for being with us here on our Community Connection.
- 11:10Anything else you'd like to add before we close the
- 11:12door on the show.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Thank you for the opportunity, Thanks for having us.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Oh that's what we're herefore to share all voices. Folks,
- 11:19you've been watching and listening to our Community Connection, brought
- 11:22you in part by Arnold Moore, Kneecamp Funeral Home and
