- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Tuesday. It is the 23rd of July.
- 0:18And you might think, oh, it's just a typical Tuesday.
- 0:21But did you know that on this day back in 1829, a dude named
- 0:27William Austin Burt actually patented the very first
- 0:32typographer? No, that's not someone who does
- 0:35the typing in the corner. It is the very first typewriter.
- 0:39So this is the day all the way back then that the typewriter
- 0:43was first logged as an invention.
- 0:47And boy, hasn't that been something that has changed the
- 0:51way that we live, the whole concept of replacing our
- 0:54handwriting. I reckon I would have to be in
- 0:57the last generation that actually learnt to type on one
- 0:59of those bona fide typewriters, banging them down with your with
- 1:03your fingers. I had to put a tea towel over my
- 1:06hands so we couldn't see what we were doing.
- 1:08Oh, yeah, that was backward typing was actually a lesson in
- 1:12school. But there you go.
- 1:13Here we have it. I hope your typing is good
- 1:15because boy, that's a life skill, isn't it?
- 1:17Anyway, life skills aside, the other thing that we would love
- 1:20to learn more about is what happened in that room after the
- 1:26Last Supper. And that is what we're going to
- 1:28continue today and today. It also includes my confirmation
- 1:32verse about Jesus, the true Vine.
- 1:34So that's pretty cool. So how about having spoken about
- 1:37it? Let us read these typed words
- 1:40that we have these days lovingly handed down to us as recorded by
- 1:45John in John chapter 15. I am the true Grapevine and my
- 2:01father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine
- 2:05that doesn't produce fruit and he prunes the branches that do
- 2:09bear fruit so they will produce even more.
- 2:13You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have
- 2:16given you. Remain in me and I will remain
- 2:20in you, for a branch cannot produce fruit if it's severed
- 2:24from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in
- 2:29me. Yes, I am the vine, You are the
- 2:33branches. Those who remain in me, and I in
- 2:37them will produce much fruit, for apart from me you can do
- 2:41nothing. Anyone who does not remain in Me
- 2:45is thrown away like a useless branch and Withers.
- 2:49Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.
- 2:53But if you remain in Me and My words remain in You, you may ask
- 2:58for anything you want, and it will be granted when you produce
- 3:01much fruit. You are My true disciples.
- 3:05This brings great glory to my Father.
- 3:09I have loved you even as the Father has loved me.
- 3:13Remain in My love. When you obey My commandments,
- 3:18you remain in My love, just as I obey my Father's commandments
- 3:22and remain in His love. I have told you these things so
- 3:26that you will be filled with my joy.
- 3:28Yes, your joy will overflow. This is my commandment.
- 3:33Love each other in the same way I have loved you.
- 3:37There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's
- 3:41friends. You are my friends if you do
- 3:45what I command. I no longer call you slaves
- 3:49because the Master doesn't confide in his slaves.
- 3:52Now you are my friends since I've told you everything the
- 3:56Father told me. You didn't choose me, I chose
- 4:00you. I appointed you to go and
- 4:04produce lasting fruit so that the Father will give you
- 4:07whatever you ask for using my name.
- 4:10This is my command. Love each other.
- 4:15If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.
- 4:20The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to
- 4:23it, but you are no longer part of the world.
- 4:27I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.
- 4:31Do you remember what I told you? A slave is not greater than the
- 4:35master. Since they persecuted me,
- 4:38naturally they will persecute you.
- 4:41And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you.
- 4:46They will do all this to you because of me, for they have
- 4:50rejected the one who sent me. They would not be guilty if I
- 4:54had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for
- 4:58their sin. Anyone who hates me also hates
- 5:02my father. If I hadn't done such miraculous
- 5:05signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be
- 5:09guilty. But as it is, they have seen
- 5:13everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father.
- 5:19This fulfils what is written in the scriptures.
- 5:22They hated me without cause. But I will send you the
- 5:26Advocate, the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the
- 5:32Father and will testify all about me.
- 5:35And you must also testify about me, because you have been with
- 5:40me from the beginning of my ministry.
- 5:52Jesus, thank you for your invitation.
- 5:55No more than that. Your instruction to stay in you,
- 5:58to stay connected with you. And not so that we will be
- 6:02brainwashed and do the things that we're told to do, but so
- 6:07that we will be filled with joy. And out of that joy flowing from
- 6:12that posture of gratitude and joy, we will live lives of
- 6:18service to you. I thank you, Lord, that you come
- 6:23to forgive and you come to draw near to us and draw us to you.
- 6:29And that through this relationship, you transform us
- 6:32to live changed lives. Thank you so much for your love
- 6:39for us, for the way that you invite us into this upper room,
- 6:44not to be your slave, but to be your friend.
- 6:46That we would be the friend of the living God of the universe
- 6:50is something quite beyond our ability to understand.
- 6:55So generous you are, Lord, so gracious and so humble, and we
- 7:02love you. And we come before you all in
- 7:06your name, Jesus. Amen.
