- 0:27Today we have a special bonus episode with
- 0:30a guest, Melissa McCormick.
- 0:33Melissa is an author.
- 0:34She's going to share a little bit about
- 0:35her story today from her 2022 book, Grace
- 0:38and Salt.
- 0:38She's also an executive coach, and just really
- 0:40excited to have you with us today, Melissa.
- 0:42Thanks for being here.
- 0:43Oh, yeah.
- 0:43It's totally my pleasure.
- 0:45It's been a God thing, our relationship and
- 0:47how we met.
- 0:47Yes, yes.
- 0:48I'm so glad we've had the chance to
- 0:50connect.
- 0:50So for our listeners who don't know you,
- 0:53just as kind of a get to know
- 0:54you question, what helps you find God at
- 0:56work on a normal workday?
- 0:58Well, and we talked about this earlier, and
- 1:01that is if I let him, right?
- 1:02So I have to be intentional with finding
- 1:06him.
- 1:06I try to keep time open for prayer.
- 1:09But then I've been most recently really watching
- 1:13for him in the people that I meet,
- 1:17the interactions, you're part of that story.
- 1:19If I'm not intentional about it, then I
- 1:23pull back into the human side of me
- 1:25and think that I know better.
- 1:27So that's really what I'm trying to do.
- 1:30Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31Just being attentive to the people around you
- 1:33with a kind of intentional spirit.
- 1:35Exactly.
- 1:35It makes such a big difference.
- 1:37Yeah.
- 1:37I was just talking with a friend of
- 1:38mine about, there's a passage in one of
- 1:41Andy Crouch's books where he talks about walking
- 1:43through the airport and just thinking the phrase
- 1:46image bearer as he saw each face in
- 1:48the crowd, you know, image bearer, image bearer,
- 1:51image bearer.
- 1:51I love that.
- 1:52Yeah, that's something that's helped me just like,
- 1:54can I have that posture in whatever interaction
- 1:56I'm having?
- 1:58And in that same vein, I've been trying
- 2:00to live my day as this is my
- 2:03mission today or this is my assignment.
- 2:06So that it's like, I'm more like a
- 2:08detective trying to find out what my assignment
- 2:10is for the day.
- 2:11And then that kind of changes your mindset.
- 2:14Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:17So rewinding to kind of your career, you
- 2:20had a significant career with the Taylor Company
- 2:23in Rockton, Illinois.
- 2:25And could you just tell us about what
- 2:27you did there, how it started and kind
- 2:28of how it developed for you?
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:30Yeah.
- 2:30I was a Spanish major and a psych
- 2:33minor.
- 2:33And what are you going to do with
- 2:35that?
- 2:36So I ended up accepting a position at
- 2:40Taylor as an entry level and I was
- 2:43shipping ice cream machines to Latin America.
- 2:45So I didn't care what I was going
- 2:46to do, I just knew I wanted to
- 2:47speak Spanish.
- 2:49And with that, I fell in love with
- 2:51international trade and international business.
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:54So Taylor, I didn't even know they existed.
- 2:56And they're like soft serve ice cream machines,
- 2:59right?
- 2:59Soft serve ice cream machines, frozen beverage, frozen
- 3:01dessert, cooking equipment, anything for the commercial food
- 3:04service industry, frozen or cooking.
- 3:08And that career spanned 32 years.
- 3:12And so I started entry level and then
- 3:13worked my way up and through the organization
- 3:16until my final position was senior vice president
- 3:21of global sales and marketing.
- 3:22Okay.
- 3:23So it was a great position, great job,
- 3:26high stress, traveled all over the world.
- 3:28It truly was amazing.
- 3:29And I was able to work with some
- 3:30really good friends of mine, so it was
- 3:32fun.
- 3:33And how did your walk with Jesus connect
- 3:35or not connect with your work kind of
- 3:37in those early years as you were climbing
- 3:38the corporate ladder?
- 3:40Yeah.
- 3:40I was very involved with my church and
- 3:43I was the, I don't know if many
- 3:47of your listeners may be able to relate
- 3:48to this, but I was the unspoken youth
- 3:51director.
- 3:52Okay.
- 3:53And so I decided that I wanted to
- 3:56go on mission trips.
- 3:57My daughter was 11 or 12 at the
- 3:59time and I didn't want her to go
- 4:00by herself.
- 4:01So I went with and I got addicted
- 4:03to that youth mission.
- 4:05So I led 10 mission trips over my
- 4:08time at that particular church.
- 4:11And in doing that, my business life, so
- 4:15my boss was super supportive.
- 4:18So I would take vacation and go on
- 4:20those mission trips and he never bothered me.
- 4:22He knew what I was doing.
- 4:23It was always, unless you do what you
- 4:25need to do.
- 4:26And but I never really connected the two
- 4:30parts of my life.
- 4:31It's like being on mission is going on
- 4:34a mission trip with my church and then
- 4:36doing my job is doing my job.
- 4:37Yes.
- 4:37Two different worlds.
- 4:38Exactly.
- 4:39That's exactly right.
- 4:40And so I felt like what happened was
- 4:44I'm on a mission trip.
- 4:46I'm in Oklahoma.
- 4:46It's really hot.
- 4:48And the last night I always ask the
- 4:50kids, what is it that you learned this
- 4:53week that you're going to bring back to
- 4:54Rockford to make Rockford a better place?
- 4:55And this young man named Ethan, who totally
- 4:58changed my life, looked at me and said,
- 5:02I don't know, Melissa, what are you going
- 5:03to do?
- 5:04And I went, well, my goodness, Ethan, great
- 5:09question.
- 5:10Right?
- 5:10I mean, he's always answered a question with
- 5:12a question, but he was right.
- 5:15Yeah.
- 5:15And so I told him, I said, Ethan,
- 5:17this is what I do.
- 5:18When I leave my driveway, it takes 12
- 5:21minutes to get from my driveway to Taylor's
- 5:23parking lot and I would pray all the
- 5:26way.
- 5:27Then I put the car in park and
- 5:29I'd get out, I'd lock the doors and
- 5:31I'd leave Jesus in the car.
- 5:32So I said, Ethan, I'm going to bring
- 5:34Jesus to work with me.
- 5:35I mean, literally bring him, hold his hand
- 5:37and bring him into work and I'm going
- 5:39to read the Bible every day that I
- 5:41can and I'm going to journal.
- 5:42And so I did that for a year.
- 5:44Nobody knew, you know, right?
- 5:46I was very careful.
- 5:47It's not like you were being super verbal
- 5:48about it.
- 5:49And honestly, nobody, everybody knew I was a
- 5:52Christian.
- 5:52Everybody knew that I was in the mission
- 5:53field and they would donate when I was
- 5:56fundraising and things like that.
- 5:57Sure.
- 5:57But I also wanted to be very careful.
- 5:59I was an executive and didn't want, you
- 6:01know, any of that stuff.
- 6:03But in doing so, when I read the
- 6:05Bible, every verse that I read or journaled
- 6:09on that particular day, I could apply to
- 6:11a leadership decision or experience that I needed
- 6:15to hear that.
- 6:16Whether it was a difficult conversation with an
- 6:18employee or it was a strategic decision that
- 6:21we were making as a company, whatever it
- 6:23was, it always fit.
- 6:26It was amazing.
- 6:27Although it shouldn't be, but it was, it
- 6:29was amazing, right?
- 6:31And so I would come home and tell
- 6:33my husband this and finally this went on
- 6:34for a year.
- 6:35And then my husband said, Melissa, you need
- 6:37to write a book.
- 6:38I'm like, I don't know how to write
- 6:39a book.
- 6:40And he's like, no, no, no, I'm serious.
- 6:42And Mike isn't the kind that ever gave
- 6:45me career advice.
- 6:47So when he said that, like he was
- 6:49always there for counsel if I had a
- 6:51question or whatever like, you know, as a
- 6:53spouse, but he never said, Melissa, you need
- 6:56to do this.
- 6:57And because he said that, I listened.
- 7:00And so I thought, okay, is this God
- 7:02speaking through Mike?
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05And, and so then just that whole year
- 7:08of reading the Bible at work and bringing
- 7:10Jesus to work with me was a freedom
- 7:13that I never had before because I didn't
- 7:15look at the Bible as my leadership guidebook
- 7:19until I spent that year reading.
- 7:23Yeah.
- 7:23I love that image of, of leaving Jesus
- 7:26behind in the car.
- 7:27I feel like so often that's what I
- 7:30do too, right?
- 7:31I got my prayer podcast with me, but
- 7:33the minute that I closed the door behind
- 7:35me, I'm thinking about my email inbox, you
- 7:37know, I'm hitting the ground running.
- 7:39And yet Jesus invites us into something different.
- 7:42And so I love that you had that
- 7:45experience and that it was an interior experience.
- 7:48It wasn't about doing different things, so to
- 7:50speak, but doing things differently and realizing that
- 7:54you could live out your faith in the
- 7:56context of your everyday work.
- 7:58That's really beautiful.
- 8:00As, as you wrote the book, was there
- 8:01anything that sort of like became clearer for
- 8:03you just as you kind of did the
- 8:04work of, of writing and communicating it to
- 8:06other people in terms of what you wanted
- 8:08to share?
- 8:09Well, you know, the title of the book,
- 8:12I struggled with what are you going to
- 8:14title this book, right?
- 8:15So I didn't know how to write a
- 8:16book.
- 8:16So I spent a year trying to, you
- 8:19know, and I wrote every, every week and,
- 8:22and then you had to, you had to
- 8:24title it and I struggled and struggled and
- 8:27struggled.
- 8:27And what the verse that I learned early
- 8:30on that really helped me with my relationships
- 8:35was Colossians 4, 6, which says, and I'll
- 8:38just paraphrase, but basically it says you should
- 8:40have all of your conversations filled with grace,
- 8:44like every single conversation, not just some of
- 8:47them, all of them filled with grace, but
- 8:50seasoned with salt, salt being truth, right?
- 8:52That way you know how to speak to
- 8:53everyone.
- 8:54So when I learned that formula and I
- 8:56just call it GNS and I wrote GNS
- 8:58on everything because with, with my employees, like
- 9:02my, my direct reports, I was pretty salty.
- 9:05Like I was, I didn't treat them the
- 9:08way that I was treating my customers.
- 9:10And that was a big lesson that I
- 9:12learned.
- 9:13And then when it was came to my
- 9:15customers, I was super graceful, like meaning I
- 9:18didn't like to tell them the, like, I
- 9:19didn't want to say the word no or
- 9:21we can't do that.
- 9:22And so I had a leadership style of
- 9:24just, or communication style of beating around the
- 9:26bush.
- 9:27Yeah.
- 9:27And so when I learned grace and salt,
- 9:29I'm like, well, that's the formula.
- 9:31So I have to, when it comes to
- 9:32my employees, I need to listen to understand
- 9:34first and still give one of them whatever
- 9:37the message is, but I'm wrapping it in
- 9:39grace based on their circumstances and not based
- 9:42on mine.
- 9:43And then when it came to my customers,
- 9:46well, I still need to tell them straight
- 9:49up, here's what's going on, but yet adapting
- 9:52it again or adopt, you know, wrapping that
- 9:54in grace.
- 9:55So that was my biggest, um, kind of
- 9:58aha moment.
- 9:59And so there was a day we were
- 10:01almost going to publish it and I still
- 10:03needed to, the, the title.
- 10:05And I, all of a sudden I was
- 10:07actually in the shower and I'm like, Oh,
- 10:10Oh, for goodness sakes, Melissa, grace and salt
- 10:12is the perfect title because that is the
- 10:15lesson that I lived every day.
- 10:18And I still do.
- 10:19Yeah.
- 10:19I still do.
- 10:20Yeah.
- 10:21I've just been reflecting about leaders I really
- 10:23respect and some of the things they do
- 10:25well.
- 10:25And something that occurred to me recently was
- 10:28they're good at holding people accountable, but doing
- 10:30it in a gracious way, you know, like
- 10:32that, that healthy leader is both high grace
- 10:34and high accountability versus like the quote unquote
- 10:37grace, which is really just being a pushover
- 10:39or the graceless accountability that's being a taskmaster.
- 10:43That combination is really what helps people flourish.
- 10:46Um, and that's just, yeah.
- 10:49Yeah.
- 10:49Beautiful to see.
- 10:50Yeah.
- 10:50So, so then bring us closer into, to
- 10:53your work now, what, what kind of grew
- 10:54out of you writing the book and the
- 10:56season of labor that you're doing now?
- 10:58I decided in, um, April of 2019 where
- 11:02I left my corporate career and all my
- 11:05friends and all of that, which was, um,
- 11:07really scary, but I did it knowing that,
- 11:10you know, God was pushing me.
- 11:12Like you had that nudge, you had that
- 11:14whisper, it wasn't so much of a whisper.
- 11:16He was pushing me out the door and,
- 11:18um, I knew that I would never publish
- 11:20this book if I stayed in that role.
- 11:23And so my husband and I went through
- 11:25all the finances and all the things and,
- 11:28and we're like, okay, we were going to
- 11:30do this thing.
- 11:31And um, so when the book was published,
- 11:34um, I launched it in January of 2022,
- 11:36I started a consultant firm in 2019, but
- 11:40it wasn't solidified.
- 11:41When the book was published, all of a
- 11:43sudden everything just came into place, right?
- 11:46And, and the book, the whole story about
- 11:48the book and the back of it, it'll
- 11:50show you all the people and talents that
- 11:53God put in my way when I needed
- 11:56them at the right time so that the
- 11:59book could be published was an incredible story.
- 12:01Um, but then, um, Grace and Salt Leadership
- 12:06Academy was born.
- 12:07And so today I am an executive coach
- 12:10and I help, I help executives, um, kind
- 12:14of get out of their own way.
- 12:16One of the things that, that I see
- 12:18is that we're busy doing all the things
- 12:20and we're in the weeds and sometimes maybe
- 12:23director level, it's hard to get you to
- 12:25break through into the executive realm or into
- 12:28the boardroom because you're doing all the things
- 12:31and you need to learn how to delegate
- 12:32them.
- 12:33You need to learn how to prioritize, strategically
- 12:36think, those types of things.
- 12:38So that's where I help executives figure that
- 12:41out, but then also stay in their executive
- 12:43lane.
- 12:44And what I mean by that is sometimes
- 12:45we're comfortable with, maybe we came from the
- 12:48sales side of the business.
- 12:49So then we, we like to hang out
- 12:51in the sales and still do sales, even
- 12:53though we have a sales team, right?
- 12:55How do we make sure that we are
- 12:58really living up to our role and leaving
- 13:02our past roles behind, even though they're our
- 13:05comfort zone.
- 13:06So, um, yeah, that's what we're focusing on
- 13:09now.
- 13:09As you've stepped into that role of coaching
- 13:11and kind of helping others navigate their career,
- 13:14how has Jesus gone with you?
- 13:15What does it look like to bring Jesus
- 13:17into that work today?
- 13:18Oh my gosh.
- 13:19Um, that's interesting because, you know, I did
- 13:21all of this.
- 13:22I brought my world together at corporate, at
- 13:25Taylor.
- 13:26And then when I came out on my
- 13:28own, I went through an identity crisis because
- 13:31I was like large and in charge.
- 13:33And then now I'm a solopreneur.
- 13:35So all of that.
- 13:38And.
- 13:38It's like, there's nobody to make copies for
- 13:39you anymore.
- 13:40Right.
- 13:40You gotta make your own copies.
- 13:41I had a team and now I don't,
- 13:43and that's okay.
- 13:44Right.
- 13:44I don't, I don't want anybody to think
- 13:46that I was, you know, above anything, but
- 13:48the challenge was, is that I separated my
- 13:50lives again.
- 13:51And I went to, you know, I didn't
- 13:54really talk about my faith.
- 13:55I talked about, about how I could help
- 13:58you and how I could, you know, um,
- 14:00streamline this process or, or whatever it was
- 14:02until recently where I was like, this is
- 14:05silly, Melissa, right?
- 14:06You, you need to be one person again.
- 14:09And so now, um, I am, and he
- 14:13is, um, he's amazing how he is showing
- 14:17up.
- 14:17So, um, just you are a perfect example.
- 14:20I've met a friend who is an acquaintance,
- 14:23right.
- 14:24Friends of both of us, but we didn't
- 14:26know each other.
- 14:27And, um, so he is just putting people
- 14:30in my path and I'm accepting those people.
- 14:33Right.
- 14:34I'm recognizing that, oh, this is, this is
- 14:36somebody that I need to talk to.
- 14:38And we either collaborate or I need to
- 14:40help, or they can help me or whatever
- 14:42that looks like, because life sure is lonely
- 14:44when you do it alone.
- 14:45Yeah.
- 14:45Yeah.
- 14:46Well, it's just a joy to hear how
- 14:48you've kind of made that room for that
- 14:51interior life and that discernment to welcome how
- 14:54Jesus is leading you even in this, this
- 14:55new adventure as it unfolds.
- 14:57Thank you.
- 14:58Yeah.
- 14:58I wish we could keep talking for a
- 15:00long time, but, um, would you be willing
- 15:02to just close us in prayer for our
- 15:04listeners?
- 15:04If anything you said might resonate with them
- 15:06and what God's doing in their life.
- 15:07Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:08Um, dear heavenly father, thank you so much
- 15:10for, for Chris and for his podcast and
- 15:13for the listeners out today, that if there's
- 15:15anything that, that I've said or that I,
- 15:18um, you know, that I will say in
- 15:20the future, Lord, I just pray that, um,
- 15:22that they hear me and, um, that I
- 15:25am, my words are your words.
- 15:27That's, that's my goal.
- 15:28And I want to do everything that, that,
- 15:30uh, that you want me to do so
- 15:32that I can be that vessel and, um,
- 15:34share with the listeners or with whomever, um,
- 15:38what you want me to share.
- 15:39But I just thank you so much for
- 15:42the blessings that you've given us here and
- 15:45Chris and his podcast.
- 15:47And, um, so looking forward to what's next
- 15:49in Jesus name.
- 15:50Thanks for listening.
