Transcript
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to this episode of the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: One of the reasons that writing feels so hard to so many people is because their expectation doesn't match the reality of how a clean draft of a book or of any content actually gets written.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Many people have this idea of just sitting down at a computer and letting the words flow out perfectly.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: The heavens open up, the birds outside are singing, and a ray of light descends from above as they post their work, as they email it, or as they send it off to the editor.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And that, however, as you can imagine, that is not how good writing actually gets done.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: I like unwriting to sort of like mowing your lawn with a push mower.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of manual labor.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's pretty monotonous.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: You've got to go back and get the spots you missed, and you get pretty messy in the process.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Now, while you're mowing the lawn, you get sweaty and dirty and you can't see the big picture.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: You're just focused on getting that grass that's right in front of you.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: But when you're done, you can put the lawn mower away, you can take a shower, and you can go outside and you can admire all the hard work that you did.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: You get to stand back and look at your perfectly mowed lawn and appreciate all of your hard work.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I really think that's kind of what writing is like.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: It's sweaty, it's monotonous at most of the time, it's dirty, it's sometimes very frustrating.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: But then when you're done, you can see all the good work that you did.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Honestly, good writing is created through hard work, persistence, multiple drafts, editing, and finally, and most importantly, finishing what you started.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: This is how professionals work, and it's how you must work as well.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Do you want to write badly enough that you're willing to endure the messy part of writing in order to get to that wonderful final draft?
