- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Men's Hockey Coaches Show and live
- 0:02Speaker 1: at Bear Smokehouse Barbicue. Dan Connelly's here, so now the
- 0:04Speaker 1: show can really get going here. Dan of course covers
- 0:07Speaker 1: all the games for the Yukon Blog, Yukon Blog, Hockey
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hub Yukon Hockey Hub. Yes, paid service, but check it out.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Dan writ's good stuff. Adam Jerdino is here with coach
- 0:18Speaker 1: cav cannot rave enough about what your power play has
- 0:21Speaker 1: done since the start of the second semester. I know
- 0:24Speaker 1: we talked about that a lot in the Coaches Show,
- 0:26Speaker 1: but two greasy goals off rebounds on the power play
- 0:30Speaker 1: on Saturday. Jake Richard had the outstanding one timer at
- 0:34Speaker 1: Providence on Friday, but Ethan Gardula's goal that made it
- 0:37Speaker 1: three to one. Kid showed a lot of good patients
- 0:40Speaker 1: because the rebound came off his knee. He easily could
- 0:43Speaker 1: have panicked and swaped, but he settled down, was able
- 0:46Speaker 1: to keep his poison and rake it in for the
- 0:48Speaker 1: first goal of the game.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, he has that type of patience in his game.
- 0:53Speaker 2: He's a very, very cerebral player. He can make short
- 0:56Speaker 2: little plays which at times the novice might not appreciate
- 1:03Speaker 2: it as much as someone who watches the game intently.
- 1:07Speaker 2: He really makes good little five foot plays, which is
- 1:10Speaker 2: very hard to do on a consistent basis, and he
- 1:14Speaker 2: was like, as you alluded to, he showed great patience
- 1:19Speaker 2: on that goal.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And almost the same thing with jake'schull on the rebound
- 1:22Speaker 1: after that.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Well. One of the things I think that our power
- 1:26Speaker 2: play is doing really well right now is, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 2: twenty years ago, when someone was scouting a power play,
- 1:33Speaker 2: it's they're in an umbrella or they're in an overload,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and that that was the formation that you stayed in.
- 1:40Speaker 2: That's become obsolete. You have to be able to change
- 1:44Speaker 2: your formation and your shape of a power play. So
- 1:50Speaker 2: you can start in a one to three one, but
- 1:52Speaker 2: then you might move to a spread or you might
- 1:54Speaker 2: move to an overload type situation, and that is what
- 1:58Speaker 2: confuses defense. You know, a penalty killed defense. When you
- 2:03Speaker 2: just stay in the same shape, it's very easy to kill.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So I think our power play is doing a really
- 2:08Speaker 2: good job of changing the shape of the power play
- 2:10Speaker 2: and then delivering it to the net and having bodies
- 2:14Speaker 2: and people around the net when the puck gets there.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Do you generally change shape while the puck is still
- 2:21Speaker 3: in the zone, or is it okay the puck releases
- 2:24Speaker 3: the zone next time we go in.
- 2:25Speaker 2: No, no, no, you have to change the shape while
- 2:27Speaker 2: a puck is in the zone.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yep.
- 2:29Speaker 2: That's really the only way I think you can confuse
- 2:33Speaker 2: a penalty.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Kill, and that's based on and you leave that autonomy
- 2:36Speaker 1: to the players too to help to do that. There's
- 2:38Speaker 1: no set thing to do that as far as exos
- 2:42Speaker 1: and those are going. They got to kind of feel
- 2:43Speaker 1: their way through it and figure it out.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Well, some of it has to be holistic. They have
- 2:46Speaker 2: to be able to read the play.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It just can't. You can't script the power play and
- 2:53Speaker 2: say this is what we're doing. The penalty kill will
- 2:57Speaker 2: read that. It has to be they have to read
- 2:59Speaker 2: off the penalty kill and if they're doing this, then
- 3:01Speaker 2: we're going to change the shape to that. And if
- 3:03Speaker 2: they're doing this, then we're going to change the shape
- 3:05Speaker 2: to this. So that's where I think Tyler's done a
- 3:09Speaker 2: great job with our powerplay, educating them on when this happens,
- 3:15Speaker 2: this is what we need to do.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Speaking more about Ethan Gardula and just that that knack
- 3:21Speaker 3: that he has for making those five foot plays.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Is it.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Extra confidence that he has possessing the puck. Is it
- 3:29Speaker 3: a really good stop watch in his head? Is it vision?
- 3:32Speaker 3: What is the skill that allows it?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Hockey sense? And I wish it there was something you
- 3:37Speaker 2: could teach he just he has it in spades, and
- 3:40Speaker 2: he's he's really good with the puck and he can
- 3:43Speaker 2: make those little plays. And the really really good players
- 3:48Speaker 2: with good hockey sense they know what they're going to
- 3:50Speaker 2: do with the puck before they get it, and he's
- 3:54Speaker 2: one of those players.
- 3:55Speaker 3: But that doesn't mean gets it and gets rid of
- 3:56Speaker 3: it that quick. It's just I get the puck and
- 3:58Speaker 3: I I know where I'm going with it, even if
- 4:01Speaker 3: it takes me two seconds to make it happen.
- 4:04Speaker 2: A lot of times, though, especially on the power play,
- 4:07Speaker 2: it's when I get it, I'm either shooting it or
- 4:09Speaker 2: I'm moving it. And that's what he does really well.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Mike penalty kill has been really, really good as well. Yes,
- 4:18Speaker 1: they scored on a deflection on the five minute major
- 4:21Speaker 1: to win the game the other night in Hartford, but
- 4:24Speaker 1: for the most part it's been good. It was nice
- 4:26Speaker 1: to see it firsthand in person for the first time
- 4:28Speaker 1: in a while. The speed is there, obviously, the aggressiveness
- 4:32Speaker 1: and boy, you had enough plenty of shorthanded chances and
- 4:35Speaker 1: Ryan saddle shorthanded goal. That was a thing of beauty.
- 4:38Speaker 2: That was great Friday night. It was a really high
- 4:40Speaker 2: end skill play. But I think overall, as we might
- 4:45Speaker 2: have talked about it the last time I was on
- 4:46Speaker 2: the show, we're doing a really good job of staying
- 4:50Speaker 2: connected as a penalty kill, right and when you do that,
- 4:53Speaker 2: you're going to get turnovers and a lot of times
- 4:55Speaker 2: the penalty power play is flat footed. Then you can
- 4:58Speaker 2: expose them when that happens. And knowing when to go
- 5:04Speaker 2: and when to is the puck is another trait that
- 5:08Speaker 2: good penalty kills have. And right now we're making pretty
- 5:11Speaker 2: good decisions on when this is going to be a
- 5:14Speaker 2: two hundred foot clear, get it out of here and
- 5:16Speaker 2: get it down there, Let's get a change, or we
- 5:19Speaker 2: have a potential two on one opportunity in front of us,
- 5:23Speaker 2: let's take that instead. So our forwards are doing a
- 5:26Speaker 2: pretty good job with that.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I'm thinking back to Friday and there was a play
- 5:30Speaker 3: that Providence did not score on where one of the
- 5:33Speaker 3: defensemen might have been John Spetz blew a tire it
- 5:36Speaker 3: your blue line right and it sprung them the other way.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And I think it was was it Tray Scott that
- 5:42Speaker 3: sprinted back or was it Kai one of somebody sprinted.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you're talking about the stretch stretched out.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And he just totally It could.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Have been probably yeah, I can't remember who it was.
- 5:54Speaker 3: It should have been almost a two one oh the
- 5:56Speaker 3: other way. Just the way that the puck exited the
- 5:58Speaker 3: zone with Spats hitting the deck, but just the ability
- 6:03Speaker 3: for you talk about the speed of this team and
- 6:06Speaker 3: to have a guy that can get back and just apply.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I think he took the trailer out by just a
- 6:12Speaker 3: little bit to allow Tyler to focus on the play
- 6:15Speaker 3: at hand. So I guess it really just feels like
- 6:19Speaker 3: this team makes some plays that covers up mistakes that
- 6:23Speaker 3: maybe other years past, maybe the speed like that wasn't there.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Well, I think speed is a great equalizer, and when
- 6:31Speaker 2: you're quick, you can make up for mistakes. I've coached
- 6:36Speaker 2: teams where you can take three guys and sometimes get
- 6:42Speaker 2: a little more aggressive in the offensive zone because typically
- 6:46Speaker 2: you don't want three guys down below the face off
- 6:48Speaker 2: circles because if the puck turns over. It's usually going
- 6:51Speaker 2: the other way and it's an odd man rush, but
- 6:53Speaker 2: when you have confidence that your three guys can catch them,
- 6:57Speaker 2: you can be a little more aggressive. And this is
- 7:01Speaker 2: a team that skates really well.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, we'll take another break back with cav
- 7:05Speaker 1: and then it's Big Viking Gustav Senneiberg. At the bottom
- 7:07Speaker 1: of the hour. As you're listening to the Yukon Hockey
- 7:09Speaker 1: Coaches Show, we're live at bear Smokehouse Barbecue. Thanks to
- 7:12Speaker 1: Colin Stewart for all his help. Is always helping us
- 7:15Speaker 1: get the players. You hear those coming up a little
- 7:17Speaker 1: later on Hudson shandor too here on the Yukon Sports
- 7:20Speaker 1: Network from Learfield
