- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy. Into the.
- 0:21World. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:29He was almost on the money this morning in the background.
- 0:33Today. We are talking about back to
- 0:35school. I do not have my son going back
- 0:38to school this week when the normal school starts here.
- 0:42I have decided that I'm going to put him back on September 2nd
- 0:46after Labor Day because he worked very late to finish up
- 0:49school. And that's the beauty of doing
- 0:51an online school homeschool situation.
- 0:54I can shift it around, but many, many, many people have the back
- 0:57to school situation going on. And I have to tell you, my
- 1:01friends, a lot of my clients are talking about how it's either
- 1:07exciting, they're dreading it, there's too much happening, they
- 1:09expect too much from us, There's already lists of things coming
- 1:13home and it's just extra burdens and yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda,
- 1:17yadda. And it goes on and on and on and
- 1:19on. And all of it is true.
- 1:21It is 100% amazing how much our workload picks up when our kids
- 1:26have to go to school. And it's funny because it's our
- 1:28kids going to school, but our workload picks up significantly.
- 1:31And one might say, well, that doesn't seem right or that
- 1:35doesn't seem fair, or that's just one of those things where I
- 1:37don't get it. I don't understand why, how all
- 1:40of this, this all affects me. And it's amazing to me that we,
- 1:48we know who we are. If you're listening to this
- 1:50podcast, you know, you're, you're a doer.
- 1:53You know, you're the person that will jump in.
- 1:54You know that you will take care of things and make it right.
- 1:57You're just like, no doubt you've levelled up in many areas
- 2:01of your life. So when it comes to school and
- 2:04whether it's for you or the kids, you're going to do it at
- 2:06an extraordinary level. I certainly know for me that I
- 2:09want my son to be doing this. I want him to be happy doing it.
- 2:12I want to be able to have him all set up in the best way
- 2:15possible. And this year we've got 2 levels
- 2:17of school we're doing because he's doing his plumbing
- 2:20apprenticeship, so he has to do plumbing online classes as well
- 2:24as his regular school. Obviously he's way more
- 2:27interested in the plumbing than he is the regular school.
- 2:31And that's a whole other thing to try to not only do you have
- 2:34to keep your kids motivated, but you have to keep yourself
- 2:37motivated and you have to keep up no matter how you know, it
- 2:40feels when they're sitting there and their their head is on the
- 2:43table. And I mean, I finished this just
- 2:46a little while ago. He's finishing algebra and his
- 2:48literally on his desk. His head is on the desk and he's
- 2:51just like, this is terrible and I have to pump him up.
- 2:57You can't, you know, you can't motivate someone by yelling at
- 3:02them. That's the funny part.
- 3:03You cannot motivate them. You might scare them into
- 3:05submission, but then they will never, ever, ever feel good
- 3:09about what they're doing. I, my first grade teacher was
- 3:11very much like that. And she was like just a tyrant
- 3:16in the room. And she would yell.
- 3:18And I remember being so afraid I didn't even want to go to
- 3:21school. I can remember actually sitting
- 3:24in wet pants. I peed my pants in school rather
- 3:28than asking her to go to the bathroom because I was so afraid
- 3:32that she would yell. So you can't, you can't motivate
- 3:35someone through fear. What you can do is scare them
- 3:40into submission. But then other things start to
- 3:42happen, hence the peeing of the pants.
- 3:44I mean, my mother was mortified. And to tell her that I didn't
- 3:48think I could ask to go to the bathroom was, you know,
- 3:51embarrassing. But I ended up telling my dad.
- 3:54And my dad was like, what? This is ridiculous.
- 3:56And you know, years, many years ago, so schools got away with
- 4:00doing a lot more than they can now.
- 4:03But the point is you can't motivate through fear.
- 4:07You have to motivate and have your motivation plan ahead of
- 4:10time. So right now you have to start
- 4:13figuring out what motivates your kid.
- 4:15Is it, are they motivated by money?
- 4:17What is their currency? But it might not be cash.
- 4:19It might not be that. It might be they want time with
- 4:22you. They might want a pizza party.
- 4:24They might want to be able to stay over at grandma's on the
- 4:26weekend. They might be working towards a
- 4:28bike this year, but you have to find something that motivates
- 4:31them so that you don't pull your hair out by the roots.
- 4:34In the process of doing this this year, and for me, I know my
- 4:40son's motivation is 100% being able to do the plumbing school.
- 4:45And as long as I have that in place, it's like, listen, you
- 4:48can do this. As long as the rest of the work
- 4:49goes great, you can continue to do this.
- 4:52If it starts to suffer, then we have to put a stop on it.
- 4:55Otherwise, you know, by the time you finish high school, you're
- 4:58going to be a licensed plumber with your own truck.
- 5:01And he was just like, OK, like he wants to finish high school
- 5:06and be ready. He won't be a master plumber,
- 5:07but he'll be a licensed plumber and then he'll be able to go
- 5:10into studying for the master part of it.
- 5:12And to me, finding that little bit of motivation is so
- 5:17important. Also, having him, like, cash was
- 5:20always something like putting money in a savings account,
- 5:23Great. But giving him a debit card and
- 5:25what? Letting him learn that?
- 5:27Like, where'd my money go? Well, you spent it on stuff at
- 5:30the gas station and silly stuff like, you know, you went and
- 5:33bought a bottle of Gatorade and you went and bought a silly hat
- 5:37at the gas station with your friend.
- 5:39Now, is it fun? Sure.
- 5:40But look what it cost you. And then he gets it.
- 5:43So in order to have this school year go forward with a force,
- 5:48look for what the motivation is. Look for.
- 5:50Try to figure that out ahead of time.
- 5:52And then you're going to be way, way, way better off.
- 5:54And I promise it's going to help you because you've got to keep
- 5:58yourself motivated too. So find out what motivates you,
- 6:00What are your wins going to be? And if you have to add yourself
- 6:03to the sticker chart, my friends, do it so you can see
- 6:06how many successful mornings did we all have getting out of the
- 6:09house? Because I got to tell you, it
- 6:11does work. OK everybody happy, back to
- 6:15school and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:17Bye.
