- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: So I have this WHOOP device on my wrist. And you
- 0:07know what? When I look at what it says, my whoop
- 0:09says that I'm eight years older than I actually
- 0:12am. So let me ask the question that I know some of
- 0:15you are asking right now. Does that mean I'm going
- 0:18to die sooner? Is my little whoop device
- 0:22predicting my fate? You know, on every tombstone,
- 0:25there's two numbers. The year you were born and
- 0:27the year you died. But the most important part of
- 0:31your life isn't either number. It's the dash
- 0:34between. The dash represents your life, your
- 0:37health, mobility, independence, your curiosity.
- 0:40And when we talk about longevity, what we really
- 0:44care about isn't stretching the second number as
- 0:47much as making sure those two numbers are far
- 0:50apart. And the dash in between, the strong, active
- 0:54and meaningful, as long as possible. What we call
- 0:56healthspan. A lot of you are thinking about
- 0:59improving things in the new year. Better sleep,
- 1:02more movement, less stress, fewer bad habits. And
- 1:05if you're like many people, you might be thinking
- 1:08about buying one of the many devices that promise
- 1:10to monitor you, score you, rank you, and tell you
- 1:14how you're doing, and maybe motivate you to game
- 1:16the system and push along to a better you. So,
- 1:19full disclosure, I'm a nerd. I have several of
- 1:23these devices. I wear a whoop, which, by the way,
- 1:26isn't actually a watch. It doesn't tell time, but
- 1:28it does tell how hard I've been living. I also use
- 1:31a Withings watch, which tells a very different
- 1:34approach. And when one of these devices tells you
- 1:37that your biologic age is older than your calendar
- 1:40age, it's easy to panic. It feels like someone
- 1:44just etched a new date on your tombstone. But
- 1:47here's the truth. Your wearable is not carving
- 1:50anything in granite. It's giving you feedback, not
- 1:54fate. Today on 4Q, we're going to make sense of
- 1:57the madness of biologic age, what these numbers
- 2:01really mean and what they absolutely do not mean,
- 2:05and how to use them to improve your life. Right
- 2:08now, instead of worrying about the date on a
- 2:11tombstone you haven't earned yet. M, I am, um,
- 2:17your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr. Terry
- 2:19Simpson, and this is. This is Fork U. Fork
- 2:22University, where we bust myths, make sense of the
- 2:26madness of biologic age, and teach you a little
- 2:29bit about food and medicine. Let's start with the
- 2:38obvious. Biologic age is not a prophecy. It is not
- 2:43a countdown clock, and it's definitely not the
- 2:46date you're going to die. And it's also not like
- 2:49telomeres that we talked about in a previous
- 2:51episode. This is not time unraveling one
- 2:55chromosome at a time. No DNA caps are shortening
- 2:58in real time because of what your watch or WHOOP
- 3:01says about you. Biologic age is a model, an
- 3:04estimate built from physiologic signals like
- 3:07resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep
- 3:10duration and consistency, activity and recovery
- 3:13patterns, and sometimes weight or blood pressure.
- 3:16Different devices measure different things. Then
- 3:19they average them into a number or a model. And
- 3:22that number reflects how your body is functioning
- 3:26recently, not where you're headed or how long you
- 3:29live. Think of biologic age like a check engine
- 3:33light, not like a crystal ball. Why does WHOOP say
- 3:37that I'm older? And here's a little trick. So
- 3:41WHOOP leans heavily on heart rate variability,
- 3:43recovery timing, strain, sleep debt. So if you've
- 3:47traveled, slept, uh, poorly, trained hard, been
- 3:49stressed, or had alcohol, your biologic age goes
- 3:53up. In my case, it doesn't mean that I aged eight
- 3:56years or I don't look good for my age or look
- 3:59really good for my age. It just means that my body
- 4:01was under load when it was checked. Oh, here's a
- 4:05little trick that I did for myself. If you don't
- 4:07like what WHOOP says about your age, lie. Lie to
- 4:11whoop. Tell your whoop you're younger than you
- 4:13actually are and guess what happens. All of a
- 4:16sudden your whoop biologic age is younger than
- 4:19your real age. That tells you everything you need
- 4:22to know. Whoop isn't measuring where you're going
- 4:26to end up. I'm telling you how that this is a, uh,
- 4:29relative to the age you are told you are. It's
- 4:33feedback. It's not destiny. It's telling you how
- 4:36you are doing relative to what age you tell WHOOP
- 4:39you are. You may doing poorly, you may doing
- 4:42better, but if you say you're 70 years old and you
- 4:45have party hardy and you're 30 years old, guess
- 4:48what? Who's going to say your biologic age might
- 4:50be 80? If you say you're 20, it might say your
- 4:53biologic age is 30. It's just giving you a number.
- 4:57It's a model. And like the old person used to say,
- 5:02all models are flawed and some are useful. Now why
- 5:06do I prefer withings?
- 5:08Let's talk about withings. And no, withings didn't
- 5:10pay me to say this. And they're not sponsoring me.
- 5:13No affiliate code, no kickback. But here's why. I
- 5:16like their approach better. And I have the
- 5:19withings ecosystem. I have their blood pressure
- 5:21cuff, I have their Watch. Which is lovely, by the
- 5:24way. You know, I've talked about this before, but
- 5:26Withings doesn't try to scare you with a single
- 5:28age number. They don't imply fate. They don't
- 5:31whisper about your funeral. They focus on things
- 5:34that actually improve your life today. The trends
- 5:37in blood pressure, the weight and body
- 5:39composition, your heart rhythm, sleep duration,
- 5:43consistency over time. They simply ask, in my
- 5:46opinion, better questions, like, are you sleeping
- 5:49better? Is your blood pressure improving? Are your
- 5:52habits trending in the right direction? It's
- 5:57medicine. It's not numerology. Telomeres,
- 6:01epigenetics, and wearables. Earlier in the
- 6:04longevity series, we talked about telomeres. These
- 6:07are these little egglets on chromosomes that
- 6:10shorten slowly over decades. Unless you have
- 6:13certain diseases, wearables do not measure the
- 6:17length of the telomere. Now, some blood tests
- 6:21measure epigenic clocks, which are more stable but
- 6:24still imperfect. Wearables measure physiology and
- 6:28behavior. And your diary gives them even more
- 6:31information. They're snapshots. They're not
- 6:34archives. They're weather reports. They're not
- 6:37climate change. Now, here's the biggest mistake a
- 6:41lot of people make. They treat biologic age like a
- 6:45grade or a score or a moral judgment. They feel
- 6:49virtuous when it's low, and they panic when it's
- 6:52high. That's the wrong frame. The only question
- 6:56that matters is, are you moving in the right
- 6:59direction over time?
- 7:02Now, uh, as the New Year comes in, let's talk
- 7:04about some New Year's resolutions that actually
- 7:06improve healthspan. Here's the things for New
- 7:09Year's resolutions. I'd like you to think about
- 7:11focusing on this year. Sleeping better and more
- 7:14consistently, building and maintaining muscle,
- 7:18moving daily, eating better Mediterranean style,
- 7:22enjoying friends and community, and lowering
- 7:25stress where you can. Those are things that
- 7:28actually extend your health span, the quality of
- 7:31the years you have. Here's my takeaway. My goal
- 7:35for this year is to improve those things that will
- 7:37help my health span. I want to sleep better. I
- 7:41want to do all of those things. That's where
- 7:43biologic numbers improve on their own. Your watch,
- 7:47your wearable, is not your destiny. Your
- 7:50chronologic age may or may not be fixed. I don't
- 7:53know. It may be your time to be or die. I can't go
- 7:56into that. But I can tell you that healthspan is
- 7:59absolutely controlled by your life's battle. Uh,
- 8:01and when you see that Woohp says you're eight
- 8:03years older. That's not a sentence, that's
- 8:07feedback. Use it as such. This episode was written
- 8:14and directed by me, Dr. Terri Simpson. And while I
- 8:17am a doctor, I am not your doctor. And this is
- 8:19purely for educational information. If you're
- 8:22going to start making changes and want to make
- 8:23changes in your life, please see your board
- 8:25certified physician. Maybe talk with a registered
- 8:28dietitian and a certified personal trainer. And if
- 8:32you're thinking about making more sense of madness
- 8:34of longevity, know that we are considering having
- 8:37a cruise the second week of August in the
- 8:39Mediterranean to talk about longevity and have
- 8:41some great speakers there and presentations and
- 8:44wonderful shore excursions. You learn about
- 8:46longevity from the real science of it, not from
- 8:50the woo. If you like the series, please subscribe
- 8:52to Fork you wherever you listen to your podcasts.
- 8:55All things audio were done by my friends at
- 8:57Simpler Media and the pod got himself Mr. Evo
- 9:00Terra. Thank you everybody. Have a great week. And
- 9:03don't worry about that age number. Age is just a
- 9:06number. In my case, it's a big number. To evil.
- 9:15You know, my biologic age keeps drifting down, but
- 9:18my actual age keeps going up. I guess I'll take
- 9:21that as a trade. It turns out the secret to
- 9:23longevity isn't beating time. It's treating your
- 9:26body well enough that time doesn't beat you up. Of
- 9:29course, some people treat their body like a
- 9:31temple. Uh, I probably treated mine more more like
- 9:34a tent. Yeah, I hear you there. Mine is more like
- 9:39the Temple of Doom. Happy Holidays, my friend.
