- 0:37[SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate you coming on, Cody.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is your, I was thinking, it's like, this is your fourth appearance on the pod.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_01]: Probably, yeah.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_01]: And so much has changed since we first had you on in your first appearance.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: Just in regards to the team, the head coach, everything, like, a lot has changed, but thank you for so much for hopping on and talking about with us and trying to talk in 2026 Saints.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no problem at all.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: So just out the gate.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: Just out.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: And then I, and I don't know if it bothered you.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: Don't know if it bothered you.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_01]: But the Saints added a lot of offense in the 2000s when he's extra, because I know you're a defensive guy.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: But just where your general sense of, you know, just kind of seeing what they did in the draft, seeing what they didn't free agency, what's like your biggest takeaway from the 2000s and 26 seconds as they've set up their roster, a couple of months before the season starts.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_02]: I'm okay with the fact that they went with offense.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_02]: I, you know, you look at, you look at really the defense last year was, was not bad.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: I think I even, I even had to go back and really look at it like, why, why was I not watching more Saints tape?
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: I love Brandon Staley.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think anybody that's followed me knows that.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_02]: But you we look at the what they did and this is really a top 10 defense and a lot of different metrics a lot of different ways that you look at it, especially on the back half of the season, I think you lose a couple of players that didn't really fit into the scheme or it kind of aged out and I think what you have left is really a unit that looks cohesive it looks really good and I think Staley's kind of back in his bag.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it was, you know, it was fast and they didn't journey.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: We're Brandon Staley last year, just as a Saints fan, because watching the defense, especially early on, it left a lot to be desired and then they got better as the season went along.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: But like while you watching the defense is like, you feel like, oh, man, it can't stop anybody
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the corner backs are playing like 15 yards all what the hell is going on.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: And then when the game is over, they have a lot of like 18 points, right?
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: 250 total yards.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, what how is he doing this?
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what is, what is not adding up here?
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what is it about Brandon's defense?
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: Is he like, he's playing like, he's playing like the margins, he's playing the probabilities or something like that on, you know, going to get some offense, you down the down, you know?
- 3:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this defensive particular is very much a bin don't break.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_02]: I know that's cliche, but it really is, it really is built for that.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: And I think if you, if you were watching the Eagles last year and you're like, this is different.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_02]: What's look, look, the Eagles had there's a reason why the Eagles led the NFL last year in man coverage.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_02]: Look at their secondary.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_02]: They, you know, that's why they, they ran a ton of man.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_02]: Now, we know historically the Saints have been a man dominant team.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_02]: They had man guys, but you have to remember too, like he's trying to figure out what all these guys can do at the same time.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_02]: This is very much a front loaded.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_02]: very heavy teaching coverage rotation.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody has to know where they are on the back end for this thing to work, this fangeo adjacent scheme.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: And so to me, it makes a lot of sense when you go back kind of post off, you look at it.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they were kind of young in the secondary.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_02]: Trying to figure it out, you know, Justin Reed played in a very movement heavy back in a very kind of like brainy back in and spagnol it, but it's a different system different language is completely different so even though like these things were all similar for him, he's still learning it new so it makes total sense that it took about half a year for everybody to figure out okay.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_02]: coaching wise, this is what everybody can do.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_02]: And then player wise, I know where I'm supposed to be.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: I feel comfortable in that role, and then that you just really sought to explode because there's really good back in pieces, which this is a very coverage first defense.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_02]: And I really think we've talked about this before the defensive line has just kind of been like,
- 4:56[SPEAKER_02]: I need you to play up to what we all know that you can do and we don't need a 20 sack season from from young to be great but it's not like we need some explosion of just performance.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's just do your job that we all know you can do and I felt like at the back half of the season that's what we got.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you could argue.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: I would arguably chase drunk out his best season as a pro and played a lot of I think Brandon say to put them a lot at white nine and whether it was him being healthy and just he fit the scheme like he had a great season, especially when you came back.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think he missed like the first five games of the season and then as he just got more playing time and more reps.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: He just at times like he was just dominant in games and that's what, you know, the Saints kind of banked on and kind of bringing him back after kind of like that trial one year.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: But offensively with everything that Kellen Moron co has done from in the entire offseason from adding David Edwards and free agency.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: adding Travis HN, taking Jordan Tyson, pickle, eighth overall on the drive, adding Oscar Dev, adding Bryce Lance.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot of additions often, so I even didn't even talk about no effect that they added from a defensive perspective, how do you think as killing is managing this now all these pieces on offense?
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: How do you think he's wanting to attack defensive schematically?
- 6:20[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think I go back to even his, it's time with the Cowboys.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_02]: And I think you look at what this deep, you know, what deepens are now going to have to continue with is like, you can't just lean on a law of the entire time, right?
- 6:33[SPEAKER_02]: You can't just say, we'll just brag in him doesn't really matter.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_02]: We'll, we'll shade a safety over there.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_02]: I think, too, you have a,
- 6:39[SPEAKER_02]: It looked Camara's great, but we, as we know, running backs at some point, there's a cliff.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: You fall off of it.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_02]: It really doesn't matter that not everybody's gears and hurts can literally play till he's like 40, right?
- 6:49[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you just don't have that at that running back spot.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_02]: And I think you need to like, like, I like Camara, but you need more of kind of that running back piece, right?
- 6:59[SPEAKER_02]: Like, not necessarily a gadget guy, which he's
- 7:03[SPEAKER_02]: more than a gadget guy, but I think where we're at, kind of in his career and what we're doing and what they're where they're trying to go, we got that in Jordan Tyson, right?
- 7:12[SPEAKER_02]: So okay, we feel like we have another piece, we have a dominant number two on the other side.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_02]: We feel like that we've kind of updated the third receiver spot, fourth receiver spot.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_02]: We're looking at now, our running backs, we're not leaning on tomorrow to be the engine.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_02]: He now has ET and I think look,
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: We go through this weird cycle in the NFL where we have these guys like a say quambarkly or beach on and we're like okay well let's just hand the ball to that guy and that's the only guy you just you know Derek Henry we just hand it but then you realize like oh wait we we need to actually have a second running back they kind of takes the load off because then you start looking at like all these successful teams and it's like yeah they had a guy that you know look if you have a premium guy given ball
- 7:55[SPEAKER_02]: But if you don't, you need a second guide to kind of keep everybody fresh.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: I look at it as like having depth on the D line.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_02]: If I have depth on the D line, our punch in the first quarter is the exact same punch you're getting in the fourth.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_02]: While your old line's tired, we're still throwing haymakers.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I think at the running backspot, that's the same way too.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_02]: So you look at it, they're really trying to maximize time and show.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_02]: and they're really trying to give him an opportunity to be successful and really prove that he's not supposed to be there.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think that we go about it so much the opposite way.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: We're like, we want you to prove you're supposed to be here.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, well, that's great.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_02]: If you, if you have a supporting cast, but a lot of these guys don't have supporting cast.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_02]: Now you do now there's options.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: And I really think, you know, that's the one thing with with with Kellan Moore.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_02]: He scored points wherever he's been.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_02]: He's primitive work with DAC.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_02]: He's primitive work with Jalen Hurts.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_02]: Now he's got a rookie quarterback that he likes that they've kind of handpicked.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that this this offseason really shows like they're trying to help him out as much as they can.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: That is, and you know, the same stuff is tight in, ask a deal.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: in the third round, he signed a new event.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't have really any tight in his last shot.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: Side of Johan Johnson and he's a converted white receiver.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: He's not, you know, he's a straight out, you know, running, he's catching a ball, period.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: Couldn't I block?
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't have, I did like a film study all year, just breaking down off his end.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: They did not have one tight in that could block at all.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like, the blocking was like a net negative for tight in his, it was horrible.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so they went out and they're dressed at this off season.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: We got a new fan.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: They, you know, they, um, they drafted Oscar delk.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: It was all this talk, you know, after the draft about teams, draft and tight ends, high year, you know, in a second round and third round, draft and block and tight ends.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: everybody's talking about the Rams and 12 and 13 personnel and stuff like that.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: So is that is that kind of where it's going?
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think you will see more of that in the lead from all fences?
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: These heavy sets, these 12 and 13 personnel sets with their pants and pants and out of heavy sets?
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: Do they want to do that?
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: And my question after that is like, will it be like some kind of response to that?
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: You know, like, what's everybody's going this way, then something happens this way?
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: How do you see it playing up?
- 10:06[SPEAKER_02]: No, I think you're right.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that a lot of teams got caught last year, Saints being one of them, I'm like, okay, we want to do this to a personal thing.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_02]: It works, right?
- 10:14[SPEAKER_02]: And then you realize like, we don't got the guys.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, we can't, we can't block.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_02]: And then what happens, you know, it's like,
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you don't want to be blocking with five or just a body out there.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the chiefs are kind of the poster child for this.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_02]: Like everybody loves Kelsey, but let's be honest, Kelsey's like playing power.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: Like he's boxing people out, which doesn't necessarily work.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think, you know, my team and the Broncos, you know, we get it.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_02]: We get in-groom, but then you realize really quick, okay, yeah, we basically need to put this glorify tackle out there so we can get there.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_02]: And so now we're really playing 11 personnel with a slot receiver that can't really break away from a nickel.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like,
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: You get into situations where if teams can live and nickel against you, all of your play action stuff, all of your passing game, things that near traditional passing game, under center, all of that stuff, it basically you just throw it out the window because now they're matched up.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_02]: And what you've done is you've eliminated a receiver.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: now they have five db's to go up against to receive or send it, you know, look, John Johnson's great as a receiving tied in, but he's not going to be dynamic in the sense that you know, you just don't feel comfortable, you know, with a linebacker, okay, well, we don't have to put a linebacker on.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: We can be to put drop a safety down or we can have the nickel who's over there.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that is really the answer, the c-hawks are essentially the c-hawks really in the Texans, even though the Texas do play some
- 11:37[SPEAKER_02]: But those two teams are the poster child for modern defense.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_02]: That's that's what everybody wants.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: That's the pipe dream.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_02]: And so to your point, Wolf of like, what is the action?
- 11:47[SPEAKER_02]: It is really trying to play with a big nickel.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: And look at the Saints.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, look right now, you know, Lorenzo Styles, who's kind of slotted as maybe being a nickel guy.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, because he played that at Ohio State.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's a safety type body type, Julian Blackman.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: That's a safety body type that's there.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_02]: you have, you know, even if you wanted to bump in Quincy Riley, now you have options, but that's the point.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: We have options.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_02]: We have a dime package, like let's go, let's use the Seattle deal, where we can bump E-moon worry over to dime.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_02]: We can bump with her spoon in and now we've got Rick won't come in in as the other corner.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_02]: So now we can match up with that or we can go, you want to go 12 person out great.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_02]: We've got, we've got a safety that can play
- 12:34[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's going to be the constant trying to find guys like that, but I think at the end of the day, your base defense, your base defense of package, you have to expand it.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: And I think one of the things that I don't think a lot of people realize is the fangeo system in itself carries pretty much
- 12:56[SPEAKER_02]: And so you have the coverage rotations.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_02]: You have the ability to play split field coverage.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_02]: You have the ability to do some certain things that you have in nickel, you're able to do that out of base as well.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_02]: And because they're not blitz heavy as a scheme, you don't get caught in, well, we're just a cover one team that likes to send five and six guys.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's so fascinating to see how the leak is kind of evolved and kind of like everything seems like it's kind of to look cool because I'm going back to the Patriots when they had internet ideas and rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, rock, and 12 person now, I'm 13 person now with, you know, Michael, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who, who,
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, you know, yeah, that's the same straighter for it.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: Now it's like kind of back in Vogue now.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: So as an avid watcher of football, then like the question is, okay, like who's going to be the offensive team or who's going to be the offensive coordinator that, you know, having these like big power slots and having 12th personnel, 13th personnel, like who's going to zag away from that?
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: to try to get an advantage and I'm just trying to think like it's grammatically like what the advantage could be if they start going you know back to like smaller quicker slots at the wide receiver position and things like that it's just a fascinating I don't know like mine like football mind of how how things may play out.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and you're right, that's the cycle, it's actually really interesting because last year was the first year I think within the last five years that the X receiver, the number one receiver on a team was actually a positive in the EPA.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_02]: So like team started figuring out, let's just throw the ball.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_02]: Let's just go ahead.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, we're playing a lot.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_02]: We're getting a lot of these, you know, the fans, you guys run.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_02]: We have a lot of these like tricks coverage, poach coverage, vision safety on the back side.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: He's looking front side.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_02]: We're getting a lot more to high on early downs.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's isolating corner.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_02]: Let's go ahead and take that isolation.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_02]: I actually had a couple of conversations this off season.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_02]: And I have a sneaky suspicion that
- 14:56[SPEAKER_02]: we're going to see a little bit more spread sets.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe not necessarily like college 10 personnel.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think Cliff King's where he's going to get McVay to run 10 personnel a lot.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that's going to happen, but I do think it's interesting that that's who he went in God.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_03]: very interesting.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_02]: And I know like they, oh, you know, we've been friends forever.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, yeah, I get that, but you're bringing in a 10% L guy.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I have this sneaky suspicion.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_02]: And I think one of the teams within the division that I think you could really look at.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I think is kind of ahead of the curve in this sense is the Panthers is the Panthers.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_02]: And you even, to me,
- 15:38[SPEAKER_02]: If you need Bryce Young to be successful, you kind of have to go back to the college style.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think Alice is trying to do that.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's so funny because when I was working at Baylor,
- 15:49[SPEAKER_02]: We were moving away from like we had RG3 that was great in 2011, but they were really trying to move away from like the tiny fast slot and they wanted everybody to be basically six four.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: Well, what do you think the Panthers have done with all of their receivers that they've collected?
- 16:05[SPEAKER_02]: They're all basically like London types.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're big.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of them haven't worked out like they want to get in Jonathan Mingo like they have not worked out at all for them.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_02]: But they're trying, right?
- 16:17[SPEAKER_02]: You can see like they're trying to have a bunch of move tight ends and they're trying to have a bunch of just big physical receivers.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_02]: And I think like to me, they have a run game that sometimes they forget about.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_02]: which is typical when you're running a spread offense, right?
- 16:35[SPEAKER_02]: You forget, hey, we probably need to hand the ball off to our running back is really good.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_02]: But it's funny too with the tangent off this.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_02]: They win when they get the ball to those guys.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_02]: So just I like the rest.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_02]: I think you have it in the division a little bit of
- 16:50[SPEAKER_02]: kind of a map forward.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_02]: Now do I do I do they think I have the quarterback to make this work?
- 16:56[SPEAKER_02]: Can they hit on some of these receiver pieces?
- 16:58[SPEAKER_02]: Can can let get ever be a fur-front draft pick?
- 17:01[SPEAKER_02]: I think we all like McMillan, you know, the poker kids really good is like that kind of power slot.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_02]: So to me, that's that to me, I think there's a there's I have a sneaky suspicion teams are going to yes we're loading up on tight ends because it's going to be a big part but we're going to find ways to kind of spread you out because especially on early downs with cover two and quarters becoming a really popular on early downs.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: that's going to be interesting out.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: I can't wait to like just clip this and bring it back up.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: I was totally wrong.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's funny because I was totally wrong about the blitzing.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_02]: I really thought more teams would blitz this year especially on early downs and we actually saw a little bit of regression back to the mean that it was kind of really it's really just that the buck and years were doing it because well hell I mean both has even said a lot like we literally that was the
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: We're at the Vikings.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_02]: That's pretty much their system.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's what they do.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_02]: And that's how they get away with not having premium back in guys.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_02]: And so I thought maybe that would be something that we saw, but I really think the 12 personnel changed the game for a lot of these defenses where it's like, okay, if we blitz into this stuff.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: that doesn't necessarily good for us.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_02]: We're seeing a lot more gap scheme as well.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so more of a varied run, run scheme.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_02]: So you don't necessarily have a target where you think you can go after.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: So that was one thing I was wrong, but I do think the spread thing is something that we could see.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_01]: And just, I just wanted to add just for where sickos.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: So we understand what you're talking about, but I just want kind of paint the picture for people who are watching or listening if you're watching this on YouTube, please like and subscribe.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: Explain what 12 personnel in 13 personnel actually is.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: Instead of people who are just sickos, he like know it.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: Just write on him.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's like like second language.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_02]: So all 12 is so the way to do it is like first numbers always like how many backs are in the back field and the second numbers how many tight ends there's five there's five eligible and so you just minus that number so 12 personnel is one plus two equals three up to receiver so it's one running back two tight ends through receiver 13 personnel means you have one receiver three tight ends and so what does that do because like then the next question is what what what what does that mean for a defense and what that does is one the offense is adding gaps.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: So they've added gaps to the box.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_02]: You have to cover those gaps.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_02]: I just did a piece on kind of I caught the nickel tax of if you play nickel, but and you just play nickel you don't blitz you don't do anything.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_02]: You actually are neutral against the run.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_02]: But if you play base it's like a point one EPA.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_02]: which is a pretty good amount for for that.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_02]: So yes, base defense stops the run, right?
- 19:58[SPEAKER_02]: So the concept, right, no, great concept, right.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_02]: But so if you're thinking of this conceptually and you're trying to piece this together, okay?
- 20:05[SPEAKER_02]: So what does this mean?
- 20:07[SPEAKER_02]: Basically, offense isn't 2025 or cause playing 12 personnel.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: and 13 percent now.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_02]: They were getting into it so that you would get into base.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_02]: They find your linebacker that can't cover and then they attack him.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_02]: And they know to a lot of times not everybody has an extensive base defensive package.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: So what they know is think about if you could pair down like, I know I'm going to get these 10 things.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_02]: Whereas if I go in nickel, I'm going to get 25 different
- 20:38[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to take the 10 every single time.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: I can create the isolation.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_02]: I can create the mismatch.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: And that's where 12 personnel, 13 personnel is really important.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: The sea hocks were really the only team where they were just like, we're just going to run the ball.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't matter.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_02]: like we're just we're going to really lean into the bit and we're going to run the ball.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_02]: But they were in 12 and 13 personnel to pass the ball.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: That was that was a whole reason why they were doing it.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_02]: It was really only the Patriots who are actually doing no play action passing yet trying to throw the ball down the field.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_02]: And so that's where 12 personnel.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're sitting here, you're like, okay, this is cool.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: What does this all mean?
- 21:14[SPEAKER_02]: 12 personnel, I'm adding two gaps.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_02]: Dethensis are gonna react by putting bigger bodies on the field.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_02]: The secret sauce is can we play nickel because if we can defend the run out of nickel, right?
- 21:25[SPEAKER_02]: Then we now, we tip the math in the favor of the defense because you have only two receivers.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_02]: I have five DBs and so now the mass back in my part.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: which kind of brings up the point.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: The Saints really did want to address the nickel, it's specifically the nickel corner bags but on a team in a draft.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: It just didn't fall that way.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they got the rental styles, but they wanted like an early draft pick, but they wanted to go another way.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't really address it in for agency.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: They lost a lot of Taylor.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: Look, a lot of you was out with him boy, quite a bit,
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's just one of those kind of boomer bus type of players could be great one week.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: Some some of the weeks he had just leave you frustrated, but he's gone now and there's a hole in there.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: Like he's he's left the hole on the defense.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: So we've been talking a lot about like, you know, who's going to win this spot is it's going to be like a nickel by a committee type of thing like how how like from brand, brand of stylist perspective,
- 22:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like, how do you think you want to address that position?
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yo, what up, Wolf?
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you're looking at.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: Man, I'm checking out this website, this site is Cheesebrough.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: In the 21st century, how do you have a crappy website?
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: Couldn't be me?
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: They need to hit a bye-bye guy, be gentle with precious works.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_00]: Precious works offers to not only build your website that's tailored to you and your customer's needs, but also to continue to manage and maintain it.

- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: B. John sets up, set up Saints Blockpointed Podcasts website for us a few years ago and hit it out the park.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: He also keeps it up the date and helps us any time we want to add something new like a farm or the prospect matching tool that we did for the NFL draft.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's like having your own personal developer just a text I'll call it away.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_00]: Precious works has worked with everyone from small businesses to large firms.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: so no job is too big or too small.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: If you're in a need of a website or you currently have one, but you want to upgrade it, give B-Journey Highland Precious Works.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: You could get with him at B-Journey Precious Works, B-I-J-O-N, at Precious.Works, or go to Precious.Works for his website.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: Make sure to tell him
- 23:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think it's it's interesting because you do have plenty of Riley who I know played a little bit slot last year.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_02]: You have being a bishop that you brought in, you know, that's kind of been that tiny slot guy.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_02]: It it really depends on like what you're going to do.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: So the way that I kind of explained it is like, look, if you're going to play a foredown nickel anymore, you probably want to have a safety body type because they're going to find you in the run game.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_02]: Right, but if you're like the Broncos and you want to play a lot of five man fronts, you can have a smaller, like a jacquamic millon, you can have a kind of traditional five day, you know, shifty coverage slot guy.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_02]: You can have that guy because he's covered up not really carries not going to be in the box.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_02]: We play a lot of mastery cover one, he's isolated anyway.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_02]: And so that it's more of the safety that's more important in that system.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_02]: So it's really how they want to go about it.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_02]: I know this system in particular has kind of they moved away from running so many penny fronts and which is a penny front just means it's a five one.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_02]: So instead of base.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_02]: You take an inside line back or out instead of your defensive linemen and put a nickel on.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: So you still keep your base front, but you only have one line back on a field.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_02]: And so it will be interesting, but a lot of these teams again, like I think the Fangeo system in the Raven system has been ahead of the curve in this.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: where they basically match like shenanamic bay of saying, okay, you can be a 21% person, but you go around 11.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_02]: That's great.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we can be a nickel and we can run base.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_02]: And or we can be a base.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_02]: We can run all of our nickel packets.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_02]: Everything we carry, we carry through.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't really matter.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_02]: So you can't get us out of anything.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_02]: We are more or less using our players as like chess pieces where we're leveraging your matchup versus ours.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: We can change it each week.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_02]: We could run pinny one week.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_02]: We could be in a
- 25:45[SPEAKER_02]: maybe you're depending on what we want.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's really the key.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_02]: I actually don't think it's necessarily a negative until you get to a late August and you're looking out and it's like, why are we still carrying five nickels?
- 26:00[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_02]: Like if we're if we're in late August and we're sitting here and there was a laundry list of guys that are still on the team and they're all getting reps and practice at nickel you're going out to practice and you're like okay I've seen five nickels go this week like then I think that you're in a problem if it gets to where I think you're in mid August and it's like you have a small nickel and a big nickel and those are really the only two guys I think there you have your shit.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_02]: I think then I feel a lot better about it, but I think for him
- 26:30[SPEAKER_02]: It's let's get these guys in here.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_02]: Let's see who can learn the system, who fits the system.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_02]: What's the evolution of scheme that we want to have this year?
- 26:39[SPEAKER_02]: But you want to have options.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_02]: And I think they have options now.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_02]: Options aren't bad in May.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_02]: They're bad in August when you're like, hell, we got to play a game in a couple of weeks.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_02]: We don't want to have options.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_02]: We want to have that guy.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: incredibly well said and makes a lot of sense.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be very fascinating like how that battle just unfolds in training camp and OTAs and all of that.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: One thing that was very interesting last year from an office of perspective because I remember we had you on before the start of last season.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's just how Kevin Moore to agree.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_01]: had a like a evolution of himself because he used extremely a lot of motion or pre-stab motion last or last season and you know historically like that was not something that he did a lot like at all unless it was just even the time and like really definitely I'd ever remember you saying it was just like it was just kind of done just to be done
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: like there wasn't like any meeting behind it.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: And so he used a crap ton of motion.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: And he also used like the the hurry up and pacing and all of that.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_01]: Can I feel like he felt like we don't have immediate managers, offensively, sorry, we don't have a little bit of a second.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_01]: Lovely, something to get it going.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: Could you now that he has more of his players, do you think that's going to continue to be a foundation of the system or do you think he may kind of go back to like his older habits of of what he has done in the past?
- 28:05[SPEAKER_02]: I really think it's interesting because I think with DAC, I don't think DAC needs to have motion to survive the quarterback.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_02]: I think people, you say whatever you want about DAC, but I think DAC is one of the better processors at the quarterback's point.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_02]: He's a little bit...
- 28:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's just, I live in Dallas, so I hear about it all the time.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I don't know why.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_02]: You got your sister stupid, like the quarterback, like just be happy that you have it.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_02]: And then with her it's, I think, motion, that's not something that was baked in the DNA of the Eagles.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_02]: I do think when you are presented with a rookie quarterback and you start looking at it like, okay.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_02]: This is who we've got.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: We also have Rattler on the other end.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: So these are the two kind of guys that we have.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_02]: How can I make life as easy as possible for these guys?
- 28:55[SPEAKER_02]: In the common denominator and almost everything is just move, move somebody.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: Give them a clear picture of move.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_02]: I need you to read this guy in this concept.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to get him moving because we're going to put some sort of movement at the beginning.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think
- 29:12[SPEAKER_02]: When you don't use motion and you don't use shift, you're allowing the defense to leverage you.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_02]: So regardless of what they call, they are seeing your picture and they're able to leverage their players against your picture.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_02]: If I use motion and I change the quick motion, change shift, whatever we do, maybe it's multiple.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_02]: Because I mean, that's the other thing too.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you go and you listen to like MacDani, you'll talk about like these double motions, where they have two quick motions, where they move a guy really quick.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: And then move a guy again and you know that puts a lot of stress and that's actually like it's played out.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there's so many different studies that have been on motions.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_02]: It adds EPA to your play.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know why we're still in 2025 and we're last year of 26 and we're still talking about, you know, why are we not using motion and offense unless you're Aaron Rogers and you're just going to use your big, you know, Jeopardy brain to just outsmart everybody, right?
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's kind of been the
- 30:07[SPEAKER_02]: the one person that's still, maybe still playing allegedly playing.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_02]: Well, does it.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_02]: But I think, yeah, it's been really fun.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_02]: When you go back and you look at because I've watched already some Saints offensive tape, I haven't really set down to watch the Saints defense yet, but watching the offense you're right.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_02]: It is so different.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't look like the static.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_02]: Here's our presentation go and I think it goes back to sometimes you just have to have a realization of we got to move guys and I've got to help my quarterback out.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm glad to see the NFL's moving away from that of where it's just like, hey, you either think or swim because you think with the quarterback.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like, you want to keep your job.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: Well, help your quarterback out and be successful.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_00]: But I just want to say a thank you for the lot of videos you put on YouTube.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, where you explained and coverage is because I tried like, look, I'm I'm watching all 22, but I'm far from that far from expert.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to figure it out.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's gotten very complex.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: I got I'm just watching watch an NFL defensive is like I don't know if this is covered three quarters is it like over six like imagine that's been recorded back
- 31:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, and you've got some great videos where you break it down like you know the key things the focus on You know, we're trying to figure it out.
- 31:35[SPEAKER_00]: So it's that helped me a little bit, but I still got like a lot to learn So like are they way are they ways from your perspective that you know fans of football and they like to that are sickles The things that they could look for when trying to understand like NFL defense because I try to help you It's like the days are just like
- 31:53[SPEAKER_00]: cover one man to man, it's just gone man, like you just overly see it these days.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, especially early, where you're getting like to a two high presentations and so the leverages and the techniques changed from like traditional looks and so you really get you really get difficult.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: I also think to playing really more from the table.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_02]: So the fangeoification of the NFL of everybody playing from a two.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Staley was part of it, too.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, it's in man, Staley both in 2020 decided we're going to
- 32:23[SPEAKER_02]: the table.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_02]: And what you're seeing is like a guy like Robert Sala.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_02]: We saw this with Mike Rable with the Patriots.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_02]: Some of these guys that have played quarters before and made or played some split field defenses are now starting to play with a lot more.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_02]: vision, they're starting to do things from too high.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there was a time this year.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_02]: I swore that this was quarters and I literally had something to like, hey, for that that new and knew the call was like, hey, this is actually cover three and it broke my brain.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, dude,
- 32:54[SPEAKER_02]: Awesome, because I like actually that you like this is do.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I know, yeah, I love being wrong because that means something's cool about to happen.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm about to learn something really cool because now I'm going to get into and so I started really watching it in the nuance and as they talk me through it about how they tie in the weak safety from and it was like, Oh, this is just like Fangeo, but you're doing it from a quarter's presentation and not that kind of cover two with a quarter's tie.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_02]: right now you can see where that is.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're watching and you're just like coats you lost me on all that, what should I look at?
- 33:33[SPEAKER_02]: Find the geometry.
- 33:35[SPEAKER_02]: Typically you're going to try and whether it's cover three, cover two quarters, what doesn't really matter.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_02]: You're trying to build boxes and triangles.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: If there's three receivers to aside, you're trying to build a box.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_02]: If there's, and if you're like, well, in cover two, where's the fourth guy?
- 33:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's usually your poaching a backside safety, where you're in middle run through and Tampa, but you're trying to build a cap somewhere on the other side.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_02]: So you're trying to build boxes to the past and strength.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_02]: You're trying to build triangles away.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think, too, if you're just really confused in your senior, it's like, I can't tell what this is, watch the corner.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: And this is kind of the secret of it, it's like, look, there is not a quarterback coach in the country that's telling his quarterback to read the corner.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_02]: on it like through the down you're going to get obliterated you're going to have no idea what coverage is so if i'm looking i'm like i'm having trouble if the corner is underneath it's either probably some sort of two man or it's a cover to their underneath if he's on top and has ownership then i need to correlate it back to the post do i have somebody working to the post or is it quarters and the corner stand are the safety stand pretty much on his landmark
- 34:47[SPEAKER_02]: But I'll even say this.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_02]: I think I think as more teams play these like re-crotations away from the nickel cover three and marry it with more quarters.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_02]: you're just making it so much more difficult for these offenses to figure things out, especially with under center play action where you look and it's too high, I go and hand the ball off and it's still too high and I have no idea because nobody who, right?
- 35:12[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's where that lag, that just slight hesitation and lag, if you have at least even an average pass rush, it really is detrimental to the offense.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, you say all that and all that can think of like, I know people complain about like what NFL quarter basket paid, but like they have no, they have no clue like the amount of like the amount of processing is thrown in such as like,
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: small period of time, like it's just, it's completely fascinating.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: The one that I think the last one of the last thing that I have for me is just, as this, I mean, obviously we're not doing the off season.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of training camp for all teams and OTAs and all that's going to come up.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: But like, for the most part, we have a pretty general idea, like what these teams are going to look like, looking and going into 2021.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe except the Eagles with the whole AJ Brown thing still pending.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: We
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: But like, what have been some teams where it's like new coaches, new coordinators, player additions that have really just caught your eye, whether it's like a positive or just like just just like a fundamental process, you know, looking, going, looking teams going into 2021.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_02]: I know this is gonna sound crazy, but the jets to me are they really trying to do like the Detroit 2.0 model.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_02]: Now, I don't know that Gina Smith is the answer, but like they went out and completely bought like a bunch of defensive players.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like, okay, I'm just like, I wanna see how this is like, so we'll start off with like the dumpster fire.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like I'm just so interested.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_02]: I thought last year too, what was hilarious like if you break down and analytically like they should have played a lot more quarters than they did.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, he was like, no bro.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_02]: We're playing a whole cover one.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I think like he brought he brought in another D. E. You know, he brought in and he said they think it comes from kind of like the Ravens tree.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so to me, I'm really, I'm really interested.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_02]: to see what that's going to look like.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think another one, if we're going to state staying kind of like within that, I think another team that I'm just really interested in is the Jaguars.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what is this, like, what are we going to get?
- 37:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like, Anthony Campanelli, I did, I waited so long to do anything on Campanelli because I was like, I don't trust it.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_02]: He's doing everything and it's working and I was like at some point it's not well we get to the end season he did everything and it pretty much worked and so it's like I'm I'm interested to see kind of that that kind of you know what is that going to look like what is derotate Jones going to look like in.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_02]: Washington Dan Quinn a Carol guy is going to go face melt or 5,000 on everybody like our really like guy that never blitz is to now you're going to blitz like 50% of the time maybe is that what it's going to look like I think that's really interesting to me oh I just think and then to find to kind of wrap it up is like just the whole
- 38:10[SPEAKER_02]: NFC West of just everybody's like it's like an arm phrase it's really an arm phrase and it's like what is that hold the vision going to look like now that you know the Super Bowl hangover the Rams basically kind of throwing in there like we feel like this is it like this is the year we got to do it this year because I don't know if they can last another year I don't know if staff are can last another year.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_02]: And then it's like she and a hand wants to win more than anything else and then you have the Cardinals who are the Cardinals who they could be good.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_02]: They could not.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_02]: They're like, you know, that, you know, it's like the mystery box, right?
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, could be, could be a tragedy.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_02]: It could be a use map, and it could be above.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: Jeremiah's love's going to be good.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_00]: I could say that much.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: He'll be good.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_02]: I think they're I think they're trying to look at it the way that the the Raiders did and say let's build for the next quarterback.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_02]: Let's build everything that we need out.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_02]: Let's build it out.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_02]: We'll keep you know.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_02]: Let's not try and do too much different on defense to give us a little bit of some stability with rawless, but then also let's go ahead and build out as much as we can on offense so that when we do get the quarterback, which I'm never a big fan of playing for next year's draft class, but again, it's the Cardinals.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_02]: And like I said, so I started with the Jets and I ended with the Cardinals.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's pretty much the book in it.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_00]: I guess my last one of the things made a couple of moves.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_00]: They drafted a Christian Miller in the second round.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_00]: Big, you know, those tackle out of Georgia.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: They signed Anthony Jennings from the Patriots.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: Just as past week, it seems like there's a concerted effort to kind of just get a little more stout against the brand.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_00]: Because that's one of the, like, even though they got better last year, they were bad against the rent all year.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: Like, just all year to say, Steve, this is a bad against the rent.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I just, they didn't bring camp, join back yet.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_00]: He might come back, but he's a good rundown player.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_00]: I just wonder if that's something that Brad is still is kind of focused on getting better at, you know, which will help alleviate some of the secondary problems.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: I guess, you know, once you get, you know, what you look at a bar of picture.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think you're right.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_02]: I think if we can if we can hold up in the run game, then that frees us up on the back end to do a lot more different things.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_02]: It also takes a lot of stress off again, you know, we're still looking at a relatively young secondary.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_02]: So it's like if we can we can just take a little bit of the stress off out.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, because if you if you think about it, like if you if you if you're starting it line up is is McKinsey read Sanker and Riley and then, you know, whoever they decide to go with at nickel.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's a
- 40:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's still three of those guys right there were drafted within the last, you know, the last couple of years.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_02]: So you're still a relatively young.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_02]: This will be the second year.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_02]: I think like the Christian Miller to me with like a got chart.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_02]: Man, those two are massive, massive human beings.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_02]: And that gives you a lot in you and now have depth.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_02]: And you have some ability to move a little bit up front.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_02]: I think kind of the wild card here is at the second level.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_02]: But they are all hybrid linebacked guys and they're all they all produce.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_02]: And so I really think like making more, you know, Warner for a long time.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_02]: We've talked about this too.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_02]: Under Alan was kind of this weird like we're going to drop you down near the box, but you're not really going to do anything, you know, kind of guy.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_02]: And then I think now what you have is a guy that can actually go out and do that.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_02]: I think
- 41:49[SPEAKER_02]: So if you go and you, like if you listen to Christian Parker and what he's been saying, if you go and you watch what the Eagles are trying to do, you go and you look at some of these other teams that are kind of familiar with Jason, they want to get in Nick only want to give you a five-man presentation.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_02]: And the way you do this, you have to have an off-ball line backer that can give you some juice and edge.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_02]: And Ellis can definitely do that for you.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_00]: Ellis is that, yeah.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_02]: And so if you notice a pattern like when we've talked about this defense, whether it's at nickel, whether it's elicit linebacker, whether it's kind of the diversity that you have along the front, it's it's giving me options to match up instead of like, well, this is this is our defense.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_02]: right in either you don't want to be the Detroit Lions where if all 11 are great that's fantastic we look awesome bit one guy goes down the chain breaks and we look terrible because we can't run our scheme you don't want to be in all 11 scheme on defense you want to really be able to match up
- 42:48[SPEAKER_02]: whether it's series to series down to down, we to weak with different parts and pieces.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_02]: But the beautiful thing about this is this system is built for that.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's built for we can do the same things in base that we do in nickel that we do in dime.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_02]: it doesn't change anything, the people are all learning the same thing and so you have I call it schematic fluidity and that's really what you're looking at with a lot of these pickups is even like a Tyre Wilson.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_02]: That's a big, that's a big deal.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_02]: So if you're going to play, hey,
- 43:18[SPEAKER_02]: We need a week that we need to play a lot of wide nine, and I don't need, you know, I'm trying to keep young and greener, and healthy, and now we have infreginings, and we have a Tyre Wilson that are both kind of, they can kind of give you that mix in there too.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_02]: So even going down to that, you have some flexibility with the defense, and I think quietly people didn't realize what this good is at Walsh last year.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_01]: They absolutely didn't.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_01]: Unless they were like watching the games like we were every week.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of came on like people noticed it like later and they're like, oh, wait, they have like a top 10 deepest.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it felt like I could be like, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look, look.
- 43:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I could do that at the beginning.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_02]: I even was, I even was like, I should have paid way more attention, especially for me, knowing like I like stately, distant general, I kind of was like, I'll be, you know, just like a red shirt ear, whatever.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_02]: And then I'm looking at it.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, oh my gosh, he's got some.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_00]: for most like, like, I said the half or most half of the season, Brandon Stanley was all cool to kill him more.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like we were like, everybody's telling us, putting on a clinic because he was just like down and down, just schematically figuring out how to win games, where killing more was still trying to put it all together with the quarterback stuff, you know.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_01]: uh, the last I would have is just as we look at this season up coming, what do you feel a successful season would be for the Saints at the end of the season, giving in his calendar second year, he has, he's kind of had to cotton be able to kind of create the office that he wants.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_01]: Um, maybe they've lost a bit on defense and there's some areas where they maybe wanted to add some, especially in the secondary, but like overall,
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: Second, second season for Kelli Moore and Tyler Shucks, a full year for him playing as well.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think you go as far, I'll profit it this way.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_02]: I think you go as far as as Shucks takes you, because I think that what they've been able to do is they look, this is not a conference traditionally, just even within the last couple years that you need to win 12 games to win this conference or this division.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_02]: You just need really, if you can win 10, you're probably going to get into the playoffs.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_02]: just because that's where the wear is.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think, too, if you look at the division at Lanna, I think is going to struggle this year.
- 45:27[SPEAKER_02]: Tampa Bay is literally trying somebody's like, Todd Bowles is like, please put me out on my misery.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_02]: We're right there.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_02]: You don't mean like they can make it all well.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: It was like a grim last season.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_02]: It was.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_02]: And like they look, they did some things defensively like they picked up some guys, but I just think like, okay, you know, that's a team that you got to really sit back and say, okay, did they get, did they get better, did they put the pieces together?
- 45:56[SPEAKER_02]: You know, they're going to have to kind of rebuild that secondary that is just kind of like it's just never the engines never really started the D-line they've never really got been able to get that pressure that he's had Traditionally, so I think like it I think it really I think it's not a hard thing to say that Carolina and New Orleans the whoever if you if you know whoever's going to come out of those two guys That's going to be the divisional winner and I think you're you should be really comfortable saying okay I think at at the worst
- 46:26[SPEAKER_02]: We should at least push for a wild card spot at the best.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think that we have an opportunity to win the division.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_02]: Who's?
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: I won't say this.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: If that's like the two teams like Bryce, Bryce Young has been awful against the Saints.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like since he's been drafted.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like he's won one game against the Saints's entire career.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is, but the next week you're going to beat the Rams or something.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it doesn't matter who the defensive coordinator is, even Dennis Allen, Brandon Staley, it does has not matter.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_01]: The Saints have had their number, but it will be fun to see how it plays out again.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_01]: Cody, amazing stuff is always.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for coming on.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_01]: If you are listening, please, please, check out match quarters, his sub stack, or the less talk ball, podcasts with Cody and Felix that they do, they does every week looking for a
- 47:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, thanks for having me on man.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_02]: I really appreciate you guys having me.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I always will try to get you on again, especially if the things from winning and we will wrap this up for all the ones who's listening and watching appreciate y'all.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: We love y'all with that.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_00]: We are out.
