- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Zach Power.
- 0:06Speaker 1: The Fire Commissioner's Office is investigating the cause of a
- 0:08Speaker 1: fire at a home on Ponside Road in Carbonear early
- 0:11Speaker 1: Monday morning. The Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department attended to the
- 0:15Speaker 1: scene and knocked down the blaze with the help of
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Harbor Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade. RCMP say that the
- 0:21Speaker 1: building was not occupied at the time and there were
- 0:24Speaker 1: no injuries. Someone broke into one of the province's most
- 0:27Speaker 1: prominent historic sites over the weekend, making off with equipment
- 0:31Speaker 1: and fuel. An alarm sounded at the Castle Hill National
- 0:34Speaker 1: Historic Site in Placentia just before 11 p.m. on Sunday.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Placentia Whitburn RCMP say the suspect or suspects broke the
- 0:43Speaker 1: locks on the shed and removed two tremors and several
- 0:46Speaker 1: jerry cans filled with fuel. Police believe that the culprits
- 0:49Speaker 1: accessed the site using an ATV and a storage trailer,
- 0:52Speaker 1: which was later left abandoned on a nearby trail. Anyone
- 0:55Speaker 1: with information is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
- 0:59Speaker 1: The Members' Compensation Review Committee is recommending that all MHAs
- 1:04Speaker 1: get a pay raise of more than $ 20, 000 each next year.
- 1:08Speaker 1: VOCM's Richard Duggan reports.
- 1:10Speaker 2: The committee's report looks at the yearly salaries of all
- 1:12Speaker 2: provincial politicians, as well as the money they earn for
- 1:15Speaker 2: additional roles they take on in the legislature. It recommends
- 1:19Speaker 2: that the base salary for MHAs be set at $ 117, 000
- 1:21Speaker 2: a year. a nearly $ 22, 000 increase from the current salary
- 1:27Speaker 2: of just over $ 95, 000 a year. The report also recommends
- 1:31Speaker 2: increases for extra roles elected officials may take on in
- 1:34Speaker 2: the House of Assembly, including increasing the salary of the
- 1:37Speaker 2: Speaker and Leader of the Official Opposition to $ 61, 000 and
- 1:41Speaker 2: compensation for the Leader of the Third Party to increase
- 1:44Speaker 2: to $ 33, 000, amounts over and above their base salary. The
- 1:48Speaker 2: committee recommends that the changes come into effect on April
- 1:51Speaker 2: 1st of next year. The report will now be brought
- 1:53Speaker 2: before the House of Assembly Management Commission for consideration and
- 1:56Speaker 2: will ultimately need to be brought to the legislature for
- 1:59Speaker 2: a vote before being passed. A technical briefing on the
- 2:02Speaker 2: report is set for Wednesday, October 21st at 11 a.m.
- 2:05Speaker 2: and will be broadcast live on the House of Assembly's
- 2:08Speaker 2: social media pages. Richard Duggan, VOCM, Local News Now.
- 2:12Speaker 1: A West Coast dairy farmer says that soaring diesel prices
- 2:15Speaker 1: are putting him in a tight situation. The cost of
- 2:18Speaker 1: diesel has nearly doubled since last year, and Eric Spears
- 2:21Speaker 1: of Cornerstone Farms in Cormac estimates that diesel alone will
- 2:25Speaker 1: cost him about $ 150, 000 by year end. Growth has flatlined,
- 2:30Speaker 1: and he's now in a position of having to conserve
- 2:32Speaker 1: diesel to prevent a loss until he's able to raise
- 2:35Speaker 1: prices in the new year in what is a regulated industry.
- 2:38Speaker 3: It's a challenge. I mean, and these are costs we
- 2:42Speaker 3: just have to keep absorbing. We're not blessed like the
- 2:45Speaker 3: fuel station. We just get to put it up 10
- 2:46Speaker 3: cents a litre. We have to absorb it. We don't
- 2:50Speaker 3: get any pay raises every week.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And finally, local business is giving back with a big
- 2:55Speaker 1: break at the pumps tomorrow. Orange Store is dropping the
- 2:58Speaker 1: price of all fuel by 15 cents per litre tomorrow
- 3:01Speaker 1: between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. That means a break
- 3:05Speaker 1: at some North Atlantic and Petro-Canada stations across the province.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Promotional applies to all orange stores. And that's your news.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'm Zach Power.
