- 0:07On August 12, 1971, the California Angels faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx for a make-up doubleheader.
- 0:14This is the local New York radio broadcast of Game 2 featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, Bill White, and Whitey Ford.
- 0:21Hi everybody, this is Phil Rizzuto back at Yankee Stadium as we get set for the second game of this trinite doubleheader.
- 0:30And in case you missed the first game, a brief recap. The Yankees won a 3-0 behind Fritz Peterson.
- 0:35The Yankees had 3 runs, 9 hits, no errors. The Angels, no runs, 9 hits and 2 errors.
- 0:41Fritz Peterson now has 1-12 and lost 7. And Rudy May, the loser, he has won 7 and lost 8.
- 0:48The Yankees have now won 7 out of 9 and are 18-11 since the All-Star Break.
- 0:54So they are really going great guns. And the Yankees scored their runs.
- 0:59One in the first inning, Clavs single was sacrificed to second by Munson.
- 1:04And Roy White drove him in with a single. And then in the third inning, with one out, Munson single and Mercer single, Roy White double a center fielder driving 2 runs.
- 1:14So Roy had a hand in all 3 runs, driving in 2 runs and scoring 1.
- 1:20The other run was driven in by Ron Swabota's ground ball with the bases loaded.
- 1:24So that's the way the first game ended. And we'll be ready with the starting lineup in just a moment.
- 1:31Click in a double header on a hot summer day and you'll know how the bleachers got their name. Before you know it, you've got yourself a scorching thirst.
- 1:46A thirst for a couple of beers. So today, there's only one beer that'll do.
- 1:51Shaper, Shaper, Shaper, Shaper, Shaper is the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:05Shaper pleasure doesn't fade even when your thirst is done. The most rewarding flavor in this man's world for people who are having fun.
- 2:22Shaper is the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:37Shaper is the one beer to have when you're having fun.
- 2:52Mickey Rivers will be in right field in that second. Rivers had a pinch at single in the first game. Ken McMullen will be at third base in that third. The number 4 hitter left fielder Billy Cowan. Cowan in left, went 2-3 in the opener.
- 3:07Jim Fregosi at shortstop in his long layoff. Certainly he hasn't seemed to hurt his timing with the bat. He's had 4-7 in the first two games of the set.
- 3:17Jim Spencer will be at first base batting seventh and playing center field Ken Berry. John Stevenson will catch. John had a couple of doubles out here night before last. He's 2-4 in the series.
- 3:30And the pitcher will be Tom Murphy. Murphy a right-hander.
- 3:35Now for the New York Yankees, Jerry Kenny will lead off and play third. Jake Gibbs batting second will do the catching. Bobby Mercer in center field hitting third. Roy White will bat clean up and play left.
- 3:48Ron Bloomberg will be in right field and bat fifth. At first base, hitting sixth, Felipe Arlou.
- 3:55Mark Sprague will be at second base and bat seventh. Clark has had a good series going four for nine. Frank Baker replaces Gene Michael at shortstop in the second game and will bat eighth. And the pitcher is Mike Kekich.
- 4:07Kekich for the record at six and six. Tom Murphy has a record of six and 13. And now as you can hear, the Yankees take the field.
- 4:17So it would appear that the California Angels are a little bit more vulnerable to left-hander pitching than are the New York Yankees. The Angels against left-handers have won only 14 while losing 23, including the first game of the series.
- 4:30The New York Yankees against left-handers have won 20, lost 27. So the Yankees make that now 21 and 27 because they beat the left-hander Rudy May in the first game.
- 4:44The Yankees against left-handers are six games below 500 against right-handers. They are seven games above. And it's been a long time since the Yankees were as much as two games above the 500 mark.
- 4:57So it's right about right now. Yankees currently with a record of 59 and 58. Right now this is the New York Yankee baseball network. We pause for station identification.
- 5:13WGY Schenectady, New York.
- 5:32All right. I'm just looking back, Phil, to see when the Yankees were two games above 500. And so far I have not found it. I don't know. I don't believe they've been two games above 500 this year. Just a cursory look back through the records.
- 5:47No shot at it right now. And Mike Kekich will try to do what his softball buddy, Chris Peterson, did in the first game. Although Kekich has not had a shutout this year. Come close twice. He certainly has the one hitter. He pitched a one hitter and lost it. The one hit was a home run. He lost the shutout. He won the ball game. But he'll settle for a win, I'm sure.
- 6:07Ready for the first pitch in his bill. All right. Sandy Alomar up swings at the first pitch foul hit back. Strike one. Alomar starting 265. And in the first game he went two for four. Alomar with 132 base hits.
- 6:27Switch hitting second base.
- 6:35Kekich winds the pitch is fouled just to our right back on the screen. And it's 0 and 2.
- 6:52On deck Mickey Rivets. Very exciting young ball player with the angels.
- 6:59Beautiful, beautiful weather for the first game and for this second game. Pitch by Kekich is swung at and missed right grave. He went after a high fastball that took off.
- 7:12Kekich gets a strike out, the first man he faces. And it'll bring up Mickey Rivets who in a pinch hitting role in the sixth inning of the first game, beat out a little tap in front of the plate. He can really fly batting 259.
- 7:30That's Dan Batta. Holds the hand slightly apart on the bat. Swing and a miss of the curveball. Strike one. This is a kick that gets out of first base in three and one tenth seconds. I believe the same time that Mickey Mantle had going down the first at one time.
- 7:46I don't think there's anybody that has ever done it any faster. Another swing and a miss strike too. That is really quick. I think I'm not a good mathematician but if you would project that over a mile it would be like running a three minute mile.
- 8:02Sidearm curve. Pah just got a piece of it. He really had him fishing for that one. So Mike is throwing Mickey Rivets three different pitches. He has moved up on home plate now. Chokes up on the bat.
- 8:20Wind up by Mike. Sidearm he held up and gives thought to that hit the corner was going to throw the third. But Mr. Schuyler says no ball one.
- 8:36Mike ready again. Overhand is timing. Strikeouts in a row for Mike Tekes. What a difference it's made Frank with Mike when he's fairly regular in a turn.
- 8:53That's right. Mike got a good second half especially a good final month or six weeks last year. That's why because he was pitching regularly.
- 9:02Checkers continues to claim that if you put him in the starting rotation he'll be a winning pitcher for the Aggies.
- 9:09Ken McMullen checks his swing and fouls it off strike one. McMullen in the first game went one for four. He doubled in the ninth inning. Ken batting two fifty four. Fifteen homers fifty runs batted in. On deck Billy Conn.
- 9:32Second game just underway. Change up bounce the third one handed by Kenny and throws him out. Oh Jerry Kenny caught that ball without even looking at it.
- 9:45Draw is three up and three down and at the end of one half inning the angels nothing and the Yankees coming to bat.
- 9:52Here's good news for folks who use rental trucks or trailers to move their household furnishings or for miscellaneous hauling jobs. U-Haul dealers now honor Bank AmeriCard and Master Charge Cards for local and one way rentals.
- 10:06No cash deposit is required and you can include furniture pads tow bars and other moving aids too. Cargo insurance included on trucks and trailers.
- 10:16And if you're planning a move soon stop in at U-Haul for a free copy of the U-Haul Moving Guide. It shows how to plan your move how to pack and how you can save money.
- 10:27Remember with U-Haul you can move now and pay later. Just use your Bank AmeriCard or Master Charge Card at your nearest U-Haul dealers.
- 10:37Murray's Service Station, 170 Church Street, Route 67 North, Amsterdam. Bellevue Motors, Inc., 1902 Broadway Schenectady, Porter's Esso, Altamont Boulevard and Heldeberg, Altamont.
- 10:49Or consult the yellow pages for the U-Haul dealer nearest you.
- 10:54Well now the California Angels take the field and the right-hander Tom Murphy is ready to work. Murphy has a record of 6 wins and 13 losses. He is making his 27th start of the year.
- 11:10Comes into this ball game with a rather high earned run average of 4.01. And Jerry Kelly batting in the leadoff spot playing third base ready to lead off against the New York Bulls.
- 11:21By Frank. Tom Murphy delivers a pitch to Kenny at strike one call. Jerry didn't get to bat in the first game. He went in to play third base in the last inning.
- 11:38A long, lean right-hander kicks delivers, swinging a foul back on the screen.
- 11:48Jerry hitting 249. No homers and 14 runs batted in.
- 11:55Jackie's won the first game 3-0 behind Prince Peterson. The pitch low, one ball two strikes.
- 12:04He's talking about Murphy being called and then he is. He's 6'3, 180 pounds. 25 years old.
- 12:15Jerry relaxed and Kenny has the time just as Murphy started to wind up.
- 12:20This is Murphy's second start against the Yankees. He pitched seven innings out in Anaheim, gave up three runs on 5'5 and struck out two.
- 12:28A one hopper right back to the mound. Steven brought Murphy up with his flip to first base and there's one up.
- 12:37Stevenson is doing the catching in his second game. And Jake Gibbs is catching the second game for the Yankees, steps in.
- 12:44Jake hitting 200. No homers and 17 runs batted in.
- 13:03The play gives just about straight away. First pitch is high, ball one.
- 13:16On deck, Bobby Merson.
- 13:22Merson in the first game went one for three. There's a pitch low, ball two, two, nothing to give.
- 13:36Jake stands deep in the box, open stance.
- 13:41Murphy winds and a pitch low and inside, ball three, three and nothing.
- 13:49He's got a first start to the Yankees and Stan Barks in three to two.
- 13:54All right, so he's been rough in his other start against the Yankees. The pitch right down the middle.
- 14:00Three balls, one strike. Didn't have much on that pitch and Figgen Gibbs would be taking.
- 14:12One delivery, ground ball to second base, Alomar one hand to wheels around, throws the first beautiful play by Sandy Alomar.
- 14:20How he located first base at all is a mystery. He one handed it turned around and while he was turning through the first, took a base that away from him.
- 14:30For a non-athlete, that's hard to do. Just try it sometime. Throw as fast as you can straight to your left, stop and turn around and pick out a target that's where.
- 14:42Unbelievable. All right, here's Bobby Merson. Bobby went one for four in the first game and scored a run.
- 14:49Riding three thirty-five, checks his swing on a low curve, ball one.
- 14:55No score where in the bottom of the first inning. First game was a real fast game.
- 15:07One-oh delivery, a curve in there this time, one-on-one.
- 15:12Oakland beat the Red Sox nine to two swept the four game series up there and for all intents and purposes knocked the Red Sox right out of the penetrator.
- 15:23One-one press, lined and a one hand grab by Alomar again. That ball was hit right on the nose. Alomar was going to leap then didn't have to just reach it up and got it.
- 15:34Three up, three down. At the end of one full inning. It's California nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 15:43The list of things you could learn about pro sports is endless. There's a unique jargon and a technology that most people will never understand.
- 15:51The same is true about engines and the kind of people that keep them running.
- 15:55They have a language all their own and a technology that few people ever have the time to learn.
- 16:00It takes a special kind of guy to learn all there is to know about cars, especially when it comes to getting good mileage.
- 16:07And you'll find them at any Arco service station. They know that if your car isn't getting the mileage it should, one reason may be that your carburetor isn't clean enough.
- 16:17They know that Arco Supreme Gasoline will help keep deposits from clogging the air passages in your engine.
- 16:24Deposits that can cause your car to waste gasoline and cause you to lose mileage.
- 16:29If you're running out of gasoline when you don't think you should, drop by an Arco station and ask the man who makes a living servicing cars.
- 16:37He knows about mileage because that's his job. You may not get that much more mileage on Arco Supreme Gasoline, but sometimes a little more is enough.
- 16:46That clinic Saturday will start at 1.15.
- 16:55Watch that time down. That is not the usual time for the pregame clinics here at Yankee Stadium. 1.15 though, this Saturday.
- 17:05And the Yankees of course will be playing the Oakland A's.
- 17:09Rundell scored the end of one inning and now we go to the top half of the second and Willie Cowan up there to lead things off. But this guy hits left hand pitching pretty good though.
- 17:18He does. He went two for three in the first game against Fritz Peterson, a double and a single. And right now he's batting 320.
- 17:28So Mike Kekich struck out two of the three men he faced in the first inning. The pitch is low ball one.
- 17:39Willie Cowan, whose biggest trouble when he was in the National League and with the Yankees was striking out so often has cut down on the strikeout. There's a foul, the hook gives his net and back into the seats. It's one on one.
- 17:59They play Cowan straight away.
- 18:02Change up way out front strike two.
- 18:07Cowan could not stop the swing. It was way out in front of the change up. A ball and two strikes.
- 18:15Kekich takes his cap off.
- 18:19Now gets the sign from Giddens.
- 18:26Curve broken background to the second. Clock is there. Up with it over to first base in time.
- 18:32One away. Hit him right on the hands with a curve ball. And it brings up Jim Fragosi.
- 18:39Fragosi went two for four in the first game batting 204 with four homers and 17 runs batted in.
- 18:52Jim Fragosi, who in some papers has been named as next year's manager for the California Angels. But of course denied by everybody. Pitch to Fragosi is high ball one.
- 19:10On deck Jim Spencer.
- 19:16This ball is over the outside corner one on one. You know when these stories come out it's bound to be a little upsetting to a ball player.
- 19:25Oh, the ball? How about the managers?
- 19:29There's a swing and a miss strike two. I know it has to bother Fragosi because it looks like something's been planted and maybe he had something to do with it and kind of feels awkward with the manager.
- 19:39I'm not sure they explain things but you got to feel sorry for the managers. They got Preston Gomez and Bill Rigney and Lefty Phillips are ready to go.
- 19:48Line to left field and Roy White coming hard makes the catch as he slides down on one knee.
- 19:55And there are two out. A sinking line drive down the left field line. Two out.
- 20:05Now to bring up Jim Spencer, the left hand hitting first baseman hitting 235. 14 on his 43 run spot.
- 20:11And then Spencer went 0-4 in the first game. Peterson struck him out the left two times up.
- 20:17Both in tough spots with two men on.
- 20:23No score. Top of the second.
- 20:30Mr. Spencer is high and tight ball one.
- 20:35Leonard Coppett from the New York Times is the official scorer tonight.
- 20:49And there's a second baseman hitting Spencer for a full hitter.
- 21:01On deck Ken Barry.
- 21:11Tigers are red hot. They beat Milwaukee 4-3. Mickey Lowledge won his 19th game of the year and they're now in second place. The American League East.
- 21:19Curve is low. Ball three.
- 21:28We're nothing on Spencer with two out and nobody on.
- 21:37Last ball is in there. Strike ball. Kansas City shut out Washington 2-0 in the first game and Cleveland beat the White Sox 6-2.
- 21:49The Mets lost the heartbreaker last night and 12 innings to San Diego 1-0.
- 21:57The 3-1 delivery. Foul back and out of play. The upper deck.
- 22:02You know, those Tigers have now won 13 out of their last 17 long.
- 22:07Boy, they're starting to put it all together. And of course, it's not too late.
- 22:13Baltimore had one bad streak there.
- 22:17You never can tell.
- 22:19And never give up.
- 22:23Try to full count on Spencer. The payoff pitch. High, way high. First walk, first base run up to the Angels in their second ball game.
- 22:35And it brings up Ken Barry. Hitting 2-0-4. Three homers, 19 runs, batted in.
- 22:47Barry went 1-4-4 in the first game.
- 23:01Stretched by Keckage. Last ball is in there. Strike one ball.
- 23:16Felipe Alou at first base holds the bag against Spencer. Change up Luke in a shallow right field of being for a base.
- 23:23Ronnie Bloomberg loses his cap but up with the ball in a hurry and holds Spencer at second base.
- 23:29Right off the end of the bat and shallow right. The first hit off Keckage.
- 23:35It'll bring up John Stephenson, the catcher, who did not play in the first game. Stephenson batting 2-50. Two homers, 23 runs, batted in.
- 23:45Those Oakland A's couldn't have given Dick Williams a better present, Frank Menden, than winning four straights from the Red Sox who fired him.
- 23:52That's very, very true. I know Dick's a heavy guy right about now.
- 23:55His ball club coming in here to Yankee Stadium with a lot of momentum after the sweep up in Boston.
- 24:00Boy, they really opened that race wide. Kansas City was very close to them there for a while.
- 24:06But now they are 13 and a half games ahead of Kansas City.
- 24:12All right, left hand hitting John Stephenson, choking way up on the bat. Runners at first and second, two out, no score, top of the second.
- 24:20Frank Baker, bluff Spencer back to pitch his line to right field. Bloomberg though is there and reaches up, makes the catch.
- 24:28It's right on the nose but right on Ronnie Bloomberg.
- 24:31For the Angels, no runs, the base hit, nowhere as two men left.
- 24:35And at the end of an inning and a half, it's the Angels, nothing in the Yankees, nothing.
- 24:39Two centuries ago in the little town of Wetzlar, Germany, a young man opened an inn and began brewing his own beer.
- 24:59The young man's name was Johann Schaefer.
- 25:02And even though Wetzlar already had plenty of inns and plenty of beers, his became a great favorite.
- 25:14Today in America, Schaefer is still a great favorite because Schaefer has a unique quality of consistency that no other beer can match.
- 25:23Flavor that doesn't fade, glass after frosty cold glass.
- 25:28And that's the story of how one man's beer became the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 25:44Well over in the National League, St. Louis at Pittsburgh just getting underway and St. Louis failed to score on the top half of the first.
- 25:51Steve Carvin will pitch for the Cardinals in that game and Luke Walker for the Pirates.
- 25:56It's the National League action tonight.
- 25:59And Baltimore at Minnesota will be a later start.
- 26:02Kansas City and Washington now scoreless in the bottom half of the second.
- 26:06Clemens for Kansas City and the rookie Pete Wilberg for the Senators.
- 26:11Frank Walwido had a perfect game in the first game.
- 26:15A single and two doubles a walk, drove in two runs and scored one.
- 26:19And has raised his average now to 289, takes a strike.
- 26:23Murphy winds the pitch.
- 26:24And what he's done is to go one through and come up with his throw to first, they got him.
- 26:28Good play by John Stevenson.
- 26:31Roy White had a little too much backspin on that ball.
- 26:34It hit the ground and came back towards the catcher.
- 26:37Fine play by Stevenson, won away.
- 26:40And now the hand for Ronnie Bloomberg.
- 26:47Ronnie did not play in the first game.
- 26:49He's batting 343, four homers, 16 runs batted in.
- 26:58He and Felipe Alou during the first game were down in the Yankee clubhouse practicing their swings.
- 27:04Neither one played in the first game.
- 27:08Alou is on deck.
- 27:10Here's the pitch to Bloomberg.
- 27:12Bounces slowly to first base now Alomar up with a flip to the pitcher covering just in time to get Bloomberg.
- 27:18Good heads up play by Sandy Alomar and the pitcher, Tom Murphy.
- 27:25So there are two out and now Felipe Alou hitting 274, four homers, 52 runs batted in.
- 27:37Let's see, Felipe has got something going, hasn't he, Frank, with RBIs?
- 27:41He certainly has. Felipe Alou has at least one RBI in his last seven and 12 of his last 13 games.
- 27:49All right, two out, nobody on now. The pitch to Felipe is low, ball one.
- 27:55He's had 16 RBIs in his last 13 game appearances.
- 27:58All right, he and Danny Kader have been red hot in that RBI department.
- 28:05They play Felipe straight away.
- 28:07No score, bottom of the second.
- 28:09Yankees won the first game three to nothing.
- 28:12Murphy winds. The curve is inside, ball two, two and nothing.
- 28:24No wind at all blowing, all the flags hanging just straight down, but it's a beautiful night, very comfortable.
- 28:34The fastball is right in there, strike called, two and one. Hours clock on deck.
- 28:49Murphy with one leg bent, takes a little too much time. Felipe Alou stepped out of it.
- 29:00All right, the two-one delivery, just outside, three and one.
- 29:08It's a tough pitch by Murphy.
- 29:12The way he starts throwing the ball looks like a right-hand batter after trying to bail out of there.
- 29:16He's going to throw it right at you.
- 29:20Now the three-one delivery.
- 29:22No ball for the Yankees, get their first-base runner of the ballgame.
- 29:32And that's how the Angels did it with two out in the top of the second.
- 29:36Spencer Wall and then Burry singles.
- 29:39So now Horace Clark.
- 29:41Horace in the first game was one for four.
- 29:45Singles scored a run in the first inning.
- 29:48Batting 244, two homers, 31 runs batted in.
- 29:55Alou has three stolen bases.
- 29:59Pitch to Clark, high and tight ball one.
- 30:03Stevenson jumps out of there in a hurry with a runner on, ready to throw with every pitch.
- 30:09On deck, Frank Baker.
- 30:15Murphy sets.
- 30:18Foul up his foot and right over the Yankee dugout, and that hurt Horace.
- 30:25There's been a rash of them this year.
- 30:29All doors off the toes.
- 30:34And Mr. Schallach makes sure Clark feels all right.
- 30:37Half-nights is it, so they're ready to go.
- 30:47Spencer holds the bag against Alou.
- 30:52Throw over there, Felipe back, good quick move by Murphy.
- 31:03Murphy's set, there goes Alou, he had a running jump.
- 31:07The throw is not in time.
- 31:10I said it was a bad slide by Felipe, Fogosi pounding the ground with his glove.
- 31:17Actually, Alou beat the throw there, but he's flying.
- 31:21He stopped short of the bag and then he reached out with his hand to tag it.
- 31:26And Fogosi had an arguing point, but he's safe at second at the stolen base.
- 31:32Felipe his fourth of the year.
- 31:35It's two balls and one strike on Horace.
- 31:38Felipe actually had a running jump that time.
- 31:42Look at Fogosi, he is still mad out there.
- 31:48A lot of times the runner will beat the throw there, but sometimes the slide is not a good one.
- 31:57Try two men out, the pitch to Clark outside with a curve, three and one.
- 32:09No score, bottom of the seventh.
- 32:17The stretch by Murphy.
- 32:20There's the ground ball up the middle, base hit.
- 32:22Alou is around third, he will score and the Yankees lead one to nothing.
- 32:27And Ken Berry, almost a good play there.
- 32:31He's blessed to throw home, hoping Clark would round the bag and go to second, but he did not.
- 32:39So Horace Clark comes through with an RBI single and the Yankees lead one nothing.
- 32:44And Jim Fogosi was really letting Art France, the second base umpire, have it again.
- 32:49Oh yeah, he was rotting the time that ball went to Sutterfield.
- 32:54Alright, so the Yankees got a break, capitalized on it.
- 32:58And now Frank Baker, playing in place of Gene Michael, a stick getting a rest in his second game.
- 33:03Baker batting 125, no homers, two runs batted in.
- 33:09Quick throw to first and Clark dives back.
- 33:12It's been a good series for Horace Clark, he's gone five for ten now.
- 33:16Very good, he has 13 stolen bases on the air.
- 33:19That was his 110th base hit of the year and 32nd RBI.
- 33:24The stretch, check of the runner.
- 33:28The pitch is sliced back into the crowd and out of play.
- 33:33Strike one.
- 33:36Horace Clark has 117 lifetime stolen bases for the New York Yankees.
- 33:41And guess who he is tied with with 13th spot on the all-time Yankee list?
- 33:47Don't tell me me.
- 33:48No.
- 33:49No.
- 33:50Babe Ruth.
- 33:51Babe Ruth.
- 33:55Alright, here's the stretch, throw to first base and Clark is back.
- 33:59Come on, I never picked your Babe Ruth, I never thought about Babe Ruth as a base stealer.
- 34:03A lot of people didn't, you know, and he could actually run very fast.
- 34:06I'll never forget seeing him when I was a kid, there at the stadium.
- 34:10He had that, well it was an unusually shaped body that he had a tremendous chest, stomach,
- 34:17and very thin legs like a racehorse.
- 34:21The pitcher Baker is outside and it's one on one.
- 34:24He also had a fine throwing arm.
- 34:27I've seen him in films, you know, in our two-player force going back in those years.
- 34:32It looked like he took very short steps.
- 34:34He did, almost like Twinkle Soles.
- 34:39By one ball, one strike, two outs.
- 34:43Clark leads away, he's ready to go, but a quick throw to first he has to come back.
- 34:47He had ideas that time.
- 34:49And Spencer bluffs a throw and then reached back to tag Clark.
- 34:52Not a trickery here tonight.
- 34:57He missed the first game for both.
- 34:59He stuffed a ball in his back pocket and tried to get Clark to move off the base.
- 35:04Low and inside to a mark.
- 35:10If I had met her, ask me, and that's a good question.
- 35:12Suppose Clark stepped off the bag and for those he just backed into him and touched him with the ball in his pocket,
- 35:18would he be out?
- 35:20I would be inclined to say yes, but I've got to ask the umpire on that.
- 35:24The pitch is hit in the air to left field.
- 35:26Billy Cowan pounding the glove is right there.
- 35:30Makes the catch.
- 35:32But the Yankees do pick up a run on a base hit, no errors in a man left.
- 35:36And at the end of two full innings, if the Yankees won, the Angels nothing.
- 35:40If you're going to move, why not do it yourself with U-Haul, as more than six million families do every year.
- 35:46Save as much as 50% or more of the usual cost and move at your convenience, not someone else's.
- 35:52U-Haul trucks and trailers are available in a full range of sizes.
- 35:57There's one that's just right for your move.
- 35:59You can rent equipment from your nearest U-Haul dealer and leave it with the dealer in your new neighborhood,
- 36:04even if you're going clear across the country.
- 36:07U-Haul has low one-way rental rates, insurance, guaranteed tires, and free road service.
- 36:13And cargo insurance is included on trucks and trailers.
- 36:17U-Haul has a moving guide that helps plan your move and makes the job a lot easier.
- 36:22Stop in at your nearest U-Haul dealers.
- 36:25Cyples Golf, 640 Pauling Avenue, Troy.
- 36:29O'Brien's Atlantic, 112 Broad Street, Waterford.
- 36:32McCabe's Shell Service, 670 Hoosick Road, Troy.
- 36:36Or consult the yellow pages for the U-Haul dealer nearest you.
- 36:46Well, don't forget tomorrow night the Oakland A's are in here.
- 36:49The ballgame will start at 8 o'clock.
- 36:51Mel Stuttenmaier, who got rained out yesterday, will be pitching tomorrow night's ballgame for the New York Yankees.
- 36:56This is the New York Yankee baseball network. We pause for station identification.
- 37:06This is WGY, a generally metric broadcasting company stationed Schenectady, New York.
- 37:12All right, Tom Murphy leads off against Mike Tekes.
- 37:17The Yankees lead 1-0 top of the third.
- 37:20The pitcher, Murphy, bounced over the head of Kenny McFarl.
- 37:24A Baltimore chop over Kenny's head.
- 37:26And there's Murphy batting 143, but he has 8 base hits.
- 37:31Three of those hits doubled and 6 runs batted in.
- 37:35It's a pretty good cut of the ball.
- 37:38It's a pretty good cut of the ball.
- 37:48He has scored four times right down the end of the bat.
- 37:51There's a fastball high, 1-1.
- 37:55On deck, Sandy Alomar.
- 37:581-1 pitch. Curve swing and a miss. Strike two.
- 38:14Package rocked back. Fastball is low, 2-2.
- 38:23Mike has a good shot.
- 38:26Mike has kind of a strange follow-through in his left leg, which is the back leg,
- 38:33when he delivers, doesn't come all the way forward.
- 38:36Kind of about halfway.
- 38:39And that's high. Three balls, two strikes.
- 38:47It leaves Mike in a good position, I would think, to field the ball right back up the middle.
- 38:51Absolutely.
- 38:53Although it is a little unusual, it doesn't bother him one bit.
- 38:56The payoff pitch bounced to third base. Kenny knocks it down,
- 39:00picks it up, the throw not in sight, throws it away.
- 39:03And let's see, a fan touched it. He's going to be allowed to go to second base.
- 39:07Now that was a tough race for the Yankees, because that ball would not have bounced into the box.
- 39:12It would have hit the railing and bounced to Alou.
- 39:15And let's see if they give him a hit and an error, or whether it will be a double error.
- 39:20It could very well be.
- 39:22Now they're going to give him a hit and an error.
- 39:25An infield hit.
- 39:27As Kenny, ranging far to his left, got the glove on the ball,
- 39:31then picked it up barehanded and his throw way wide of Alou.
- 39:34And when it hit the railing in the box, the fan reached over and grabbed it.
- 39:39Yankees had two men there that could have made a play on him at second base.
- 39:42Not only Alou, but Rodney Bloomberg had raced all the way in for Bryce Field, and he was backing up the play.
- 39:47Well, that's good. I know he would not have gone to second.
- 39:50Because he had run right straight down the line.
- 39:53That's why Bob Shepard makes the announcement here, and that's why we tell you kids and fans sitting in that first row,
- 39:59don't touch a ball in play unless it bounces into the seat.
- 40:04By Sandy Alomar, struck out his first time up. Murphy at second, nobody out.
- 40:08Alomar started a bug, thought he drew the bat back, but Nesta Shalek says no and a strike one.
- 40:14It was a curve low, almost in the dirt.
- 40:25Alomar wants to get Murphy over to third, where he can score on a base hit or a fly ball.
- 40:34Murphy with the jacket on at second, stretched by Kekin.
- 40:37Fitch swing and a miss, and he was trying to go to right field, oh and two.
- 40:45On deck, Mickey Rivers.
- 40:55Yankees out in front, one nothing here, top of the third.
- 41:02Mike taking a long look in for the sign. He's ready now to the belt.
- 41:09Fitch bounce to the shortstop, Baker to his right, Bob has the ball, can't make a play.
- 41:14I don't know whether that hit cranked in the chest or the chin, but it'll be an error on Baker.
- 41:19So consecutive errors by Kenny and Baker have run it to first and second with nobody out.
- 41:28And Nevada Mickey Rivers, who struck out his first time up, and the Yankees will be looking for the butt now, and this kid can fly.
- 41:46Mike has given up one walk in the ball game.
- 41:51He's ready, and now the playoff pitch. Fly ball, that'll get a one-hole with Bloomberg going deep.
- 41:58It's under it, makes the catch, and a throw comes in at second base.
- 42:03Tagging up and scoring is Murphy, tagging up also from second and going to third is Alomar, holding at first is Rivers, and the score is tied.
- 42:111-1 on a long sacrifice fly to Bloomberg by Ken McMullin.
- 42:18So Murphy scores, leading his own cause, and now Billy Cowan, who bounced his second his first time up.
- 42:26That's what that speed will do for you. Alomar was able to tag up and go to third base.
- 42:34And Billy Cowan, not too slow a foot. Yankees will really have to hustle to get that double play.
- 42:42Runners at first and third, pitch to Cowan, strike one call.
- 42:58On deck, Jim Fragosi.
- 43:03Beckett checks the runners. Low with a curve ball, 1-1.
- 43:20Yankees won the first game, 3-0.
- 43:27Curve, hit in the air to not too deep center field, Bobby Mercer coming on, Baker's back, Baker makes the catch, Alomar, he does.
- 43:34Oh, the copy that kept coming, he would have scored.
- 43:38And going to second is Rivers, heads up play by Mickey Rivers.
- 43:42Alomar tagged up, came better than halfway down the line. Had he continued, he would have scored.
- 43:48Rivers tagged up, and when Baker's throw was high and Mae Gibbs came back to get it and reached high, he continued on to second base.
- 43:56That was a break for the Yankees, Frank.
- 43:59It certainly was, and as you said, it kept coming. There was no doubt that he would have scored.
- 44:04Baker then saw him coming, realized he had hesitated too much, uncorked the ball in, and he was way wide on the plate with his throw.
- 44:12All right, they're going to put Fregosi on, an intentional walk, and load him up for Jim Spencer.
- 44:26They're going to give Baker an error on his high throw to the plate, allowing Rivers to go to second base.
- 44:43Well, the Yankees have made three errors in this inning.
- 45:09Here's Spencer of the batter. He walked in the second inning. The bases are loaded with two out the ballgame side, 1-1.
- 45:23Frank Baker has been charged with two errors in this inning. Jerry Kenny won.
- 45:31Mr. Spencer, line to right field, Bloomberg coming on and makes the running catch. Oh, that ball was hit on the nose.
- 45:40Bloomberg got a good jump and caught it right in the breath there.
- 45:45The Angels score one on two base hits, three errors by the Yankees, and three men left.
- 45:51And at the end of two and a half, it's the Angels one and the Yankees one.
- 45:58You know, one of the nice things about owning a car is that you can travel whenever you get the urge, to the beach, the mountains, or just to the store for the daily necessities.
- 46:07Wherever you drive, you'll be burning gasoline, and you may be burning more than you should.
- 46:12One reason is that your carburetor may not be clean enough. There may be deposits that can cause your car to waste gas and cost you miles.
- 46:20If this seems to be happening to you, if you're not satisfied with the performance you're getting, you should know about Arco Supreme gasoline.
- 46:28Arco Supreme helps keep deposits from clogging the air passages of your engine, deposits that can cause your car to waste gasoline and cause you to lose mileage.
- 46:38So if you think you're not getting the mileage you should, try a tank full of Arco Supreme.
- 46:43You'll find Arco Supreme gasoline at any Arco station. You may not get that much more mileage on it, but sometimes a little more is enough.
- 47:03All right, Mike Tekich will try to get something started in his own behalf here on the bottom half of inning number three with a score tied one to one.
- 47:10All right, Frank, and Tekich is hitting 172.
- 47:14Five for 29, no extra base hits, one run battered in.
- 47:19Tom Murphy on the mound.
- 47:23The pitch to Tekich is a curved swing and a missed right wide.
- 47:27How do you like that, throwing a pitcher a curve on the first pitch?
- 47:43Murphy's next pitch, another curve. Did he hold up? No, he didn't. It's strike two.
- 47:48He tried to check the swing. Could not hold up in time, nothing in two.
- 48:03All right, Murphy looks in for the sign.
- 48:08Swing and a missed. Again he couldn't check the swing, took a half swing at it and he's out of there.
- 48:15Tom Murphy picks up his first strike out of the ballgame, brings up Jerry Kenny who hit back to the box.
- 48:35On deck, Jake Gibbs.
- 48:40Kenny is a curve over, strike one, call.
- 48:45The ball really breaks.
- 48:53He's won the first game, three to nothing behind Fritz Peterson.
- 48:57Another curve, bounce to second. Alomar gets a nice big hop.
- 49:01Fires the first, two up.
- 49:06And now Jake Gibbs. Jake was robbed of a base hit on a fine play by Alomar in the first inning.
- 49:21Two men are out, all tied 1-1.
- 49:33Pitch to Gibbs is over, strike one, call.
- 49:47One strike delivery, low and inside, 1-1.
- 49:56We'll give you a rundown of all the scores at the end of this half inning.
- 50:04Swing and a missed, one ball, two strikes.
- 50:09On deck, Bobby Mercer.
- 50:20Murphy winds, curve, check, swing, ground. A nice play by Murphy over the shoulder.
- 50:26Throws to first, Gibbs is out of there. Jake was trying to check his swing.
- 50:31So the Yankees get down in order in the bottom of the third.
- 50:34And at the end of three full innings, California won and the Yankees won.
- 50:40On the scoreboard, Oakland beat the Red Sox 9-2 swept a four-game series from them.
- 50:45Diego Seguerre the winner and Ken Brett the loser. Tatum and Scott Homan for the Red Sox.
- 50:51Tatum is a pitcher in first of the year, but Scott is 19.
- 50:56Kansas City shut out Washington in the first game 2-0, Wright the winner and Schellenbach the loser.
- 51:02Second game, no score at the end of two and a half, Nelson against Groberg.
- 51:07The Tigers beat Milwaukee 4-3. Mickey Lowlis winning his 19th of the year.
- 51:11He's lost a Tatum the loser. Cleveland beat the White Sox 6-2.
- 51:17Fourth to the winner, Wood the loser, LaVacqua home, and Baltimore and Minnesota later on.
- 51:22The Mets took San Diego later tonight. Pirates 2-0, Carpenter 2, Carpenter against Walker.
- 51:28Philadelphia at L.A. later on. Atlanta 5-0, Houston 1 at the end of an inning and a half.
- 51:33Blasting game against Reed, and those are the only games scheduled.
- 51:36Here the score is 1-1 as we get ready for the top of the fourth inning.
- 51:42And just arriving from TV, all ready, all dressed in blue, ready for Sunday.
- 51:50And vital blue is Bill White.
- 51:52Hi Phil Rizzuto. See Kenny Barry will lead off for the Angels in the fourth.
- 51:59Score is tied 1-1.
- 52:02And I tell you the Yankees are quite fortunate to come out of that last inning after three years.
- 52:07Yes.
- 52:11Just allow the Angels one run. Barry's one for one. He's single to right field.
- 52:16Kenny a right-handed hitter.
- 52:18Looped the ball in the right field first time up.
- 52:20Techich is ready. A breaking ball gets the outside corner.
- 52:32Mike's ready again and a big windup. Over the head the 0-1 pitch. Another breaking ball. Bounced to third.
- 52:37Kenny with the big hop. Long throw to first. It's high, but a little hazard for the first stop.
- 52:47With one out, the catcher, John Stephenson steps in.
- 53:00Stephenson fly the right field his first time. John is batting left-handed.
- 53:05See, lefty Phillips has Mickey Rivers, a left-handed hitter.
- 53:09Spencer, a left-handed hitter. And John Stephenson there against the left-handed throwing Mike Techich.
- 53:14Alomar switches.
- 53:19First pitch, the breaking ball. Bounced to first base. Alou furloughs it, but he'll have time.
- 53:23He tosses to Techich covering first. And they're two outs.
- 53:29That's a good part of playing first base. All you got to do is get in front of him and knock him down.
- 53:33It's a pitcher's job to get over there.
- 53:35That's right. And if you've got big shins, I remember Kozuski every once in a while would stick his shin out there to knock a ball down.
- 53:41That would hurt me, but he was so big.
- 53:45Johnny Mize, too, stick his foot out, knock it down, reach down, pick it up, and throw to the pitcher.
- 53:54Ah, here's Tom Murphy, the pitcher. Murphy got an infield hit his first time.
- 53:59And he scored the only run for California. Murphy bats right-handed, takes down low.
- 54:09Can he feel that the ground ball drew under the seats? Two balls and no strikes. Inside.
- 54:19Murphy backs on, out looks down at Rocky Bridges, coaching his third.
- 54:24This guy looks like he can hit.
- 54:28The pitch to him, swung on, popped up, and pound territory behind the plate.
- 54:33Murphy throws the mask away, and he's under and grabs it for the third out. So an easy inning for Mike Kekich.
- 54:41He gets the Angels out, three up, three down.
- 54:46And for California in the fourth, no runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on up to three and a half.
- 54:52New York Yankees one, California Angels one.
- 54:57The village blacksmith was one of the men who built America.
- 55:12He shot many a horse, forged many a plow, and built many a mighty thirst.
- 55:18A more than one beer thirst. The kind of thirst that took more than one cold beer to satisfy.
- 55:25And that's where Schaeffer came in. We built a beer for the men who built America.
- 55:31We started practicing on more than one beer thirsts back before most brewers even started brewing.
- 55:37And practice makes perfect.
- 55:41Today Schaeffer has the unmatched quality of flavor that never fades.
- 55:46Schaeffer is made for the more than one beer man. Always has been, always will be.
- 55:52Schaeffer is a one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 55:59Tommy Mercer will lead off the last half of the fourth inning for the Yankees with the score five, one, one.
- 56:04Mercer lined the second base, his only time up.
- 56:15Tom Murphy, all right hander, on the monitor California, Murphy six and thirteen.
- 56:26Mercer leads this ball club with 71 runs batted and also with 21 homers.
- 56:31Takes the ball on the first pitch and takes it outside a ball that brought McMone the third base and moving in quickly.
- 56:37Also Jim Spencer, the first baseman. Outfield plays Mercer deep and around toward right.
- 56:43There is a gap in left center field as Billy Cowan plays straight away and in shallow left field.
- 56:50One old pitch, breaking ball, down low.
- 57:06Yankees picked up their run in the second. Angels tied it up with a run in the third.
- 57:12Where it is now, one, one.
- 57:15Mercer lines out base up center field. Bobby Nye one for two.
- 57:22And he stops at first base and that will bring in Roy White.
- 57:30Only the Yankees second base into the ball game against Murphy.
- 57:35Clark single back in the second drove in a lose with stolen second base.
- 57:40For the only other hit the Yankees have.
- 57:43Ah, here is White. He tried to front first time but didn't get the ball out far enough and Stevenson catches it and throws him out at first.
- 57:52Down low ball.
- 57:58Yankees have now won 59 games of lost 58 as Peterson shut out California 3-0 in the first ball game.
- 58:07Murphy looking at Stevenson. Now he comes to the bell.
- 58:10Mercer leads from first.
- 58:12Pitch popped up over near the Angels dugout. Stevenson after it.
- 58:16He is near it, can't get to it. It's on top of the dugout.
- 58:19Both Stevenson and Ken McMullen, the third baseman, were there.
- 58:23Ball fell just out of reach.
- 58:27So it's a ball and a strike going White.
- 58:32Let's see, the same with Cardinals. They're leading the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 at the end of two and a half innings.
- 58:47So the Cardinals came up with three runs and they're half of the third.
- 58:53Pittsburgh is going into a little tumble over there.
- 58:57One went pitched out of White, popped up towards center field. Barry stands and now he comes in a couple of steps.
- 59:03Waits on the ball and he has it for the first out.
- 59:09Throw White now over two. That's the first out here in the fourth.
- 59:17Bring in Bloomberg.
- 59:24Bloomberg fouls to the second baseman, Alomar, who tosses to the pitcher Murphy, covering his first time up.
- 59:32That was back in the second inning.
- 59:34Ronnie bats left-handed, stands close to the plate, has a closed pass.
- 59:39Now he backs off a bit.
- 59:42Mercer leads from first.
- 59:44First pitch is fouled off.
- 59:47He's going to do fastball, looks like Bloomberg is going to carry to left field.
- 59:57Score is tied, 1-1, last of the fourth.
- 1:00:06Mercer takes the lead from first.
- 1:00:08This guy's got a quick move over there.
- 1:00:10He's stepped towards first, but he just throws across his body. Now Bloomberg walks back south.
- 1:00:21No balls to strike, one out.
- 1:00:24Mercer's checked it first.
- 1:00:26Pitch to Bloomberg. Inside, a ball and a strike.
- 1:00:34A lay-aloo in the on-deck surface.
- 1:00:45All these angels pitchers seem to take a lot more time when a runner gets off.
- 1:00:49There's a throw to first.
- 1:00:52Mercer is back.
- 1:01:00Murphy deals to the plate.
- 1:01:03That's called no pitch.
- 1:01:07Time was called as Bloomberg backed out.
- 1:01:12Now Shylock, now Shylock, now talking to the John Stevenson.
- 1:01:16You know what I think happened is Ronnie was swinging his bat back.
- 1:01:19He tipped to catch his glove.
- 1:01:23Now if he had been doing that while he was swinging, he would have been awarded first base.
- 1:01:27Right.
- 1:01:29So it's 1-1 still. That was no pitch.
- 1:01:32A ball and a strike on Bloomberg. One out. Mercer at first base.
- 1:01:35Force tied 1-1. We're in the last of the fourths.
- 1:01:38Murphy now to the belt.
- 1:01:411-1 pitch to Bloomberg. Swung on, driven towards center field.
- 1:01:45Just didn't get it. Got up under it too much.
- 1:01:47Sky deep out there. Barry waits on it and grabs it.
- 1:01:50Mercer starts to second, but he'll hold up.
- 1:01:54They're two outs.
- 1:02:02And Alou steps in.
- 1:02:13Alou walked back in the second inning. His only time up still second.
- 1:02:17He scored on Clark's single up the middle.
- 1:02:19The Yankees only run.
- 1:02:21Felipe hasn't been up officially yet, although he has scored a run.
- 1:02:25First pitch to him is down low. Breaking ball.
- 1:02:36Outfield straightens up for Alou. He sprays the ball all over.
- 1:02:41Is that right field? The river's a little bit way out there at right field.
- 1:02:44He's near the track. Now he comes in a little bit.
- 1:02:47He's playing Alou like he should be playing Mercer.
- 1:02:50The river is also moving toward the line a bit.
- 1:02:53There's a gap now a little bit in right center.
- 1:02:56Murphy checks Mercer first.
- 1:02:59Looks at him again.
- 1:03:011-0 pitch to Alou. Popped up, and that'll be in the seat foul behind old Blake.
- 1:03:08Ball in the strike.
- 1:03:17Spencer, the first baseman, holds Mercer there.
- 1:03:20Bobby has stolen 11 bases for the Yankees so far this year.
- 1:03:28White has stolen 11. In fact, Roy's next stolen base will be his 100 of his career.
- 1:03:361-1 pitch to Alou. There goes Mercer.
- 1:03:38Inside, throwing the second. He's called out.
- 1:03:43Davis has got the ball down on one bounce to the second baseman, Aloumar.
- 1:03:47Perfect bounce. Aloumar grabbed it and put it on a sliding Mercer.
- 1:03:52So Mercer's going out from 2-4 for the third out for the Yankees.
- 1:03:56And the fourth. No runs on one hit. No errors. Nobody left on base.
- 1:04:01At the end of three, four innings of play, the New York Yankees won.
- 1:04:07The California Angels won.

- 1:05:14Well, a lot of times that's a better way to throw a ball like from beach shortstop or catchers.
- 1:05:19That one bounce skips off the grass of the AstroTurf and gets there quicker, I think.
- 1:05:26That was right there, one bounce right into Alomar's hand.
- 1:05:31He put it right on Mercer and Alomar will lead off the first of the fifth for the Angels.
- 1:05:38Takes the ball.
- 1:05:43Alomar's over two. He struck out first time. Got a on an error by the shortstop baker in the third.
- 1:05:50What's standing at third there, though?
- 1:05:55Kick it. One old pitch almost hits him inside. Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:05:59He's short enough for Alomar. Alomar's switch hitter.
- 1:06:03Kenny, the third baseman, is in even with the bag at third.
- 1:06:05Alou is maybe a couple of steps behind the base pass there at first.
- 1:06:10Outfield is in shallow also. That fastball fouled off.
- 1:06:13That'll be over the Yankee dugout and in the upper deck on that side, on the right side.
- 1:06:23Alomar's a pesky little hitter. He has 132 hits. He scored 36 runs for the Angels.
- 1:06:31You're even in 36, hitting just over 260.
- 1:06:35Pitch to him. Sky towards center field. That should be easy for Mercer.
- 1:06:40Probably loses his hat, but he waits for it and grabs it for the first time.
- 1:06:46This is the New York Yankee baseball network. Let's pause for station identification.
- 1:06:51This is WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station, Schenectady, New York.
- 1:07:02Here's Mickey Rivers with one out. Rivers batting left-handed.
- 1:07:11103 left-handed hitters against Skaggage. He's one for two.
- 1:07:15Got a bunch single in the third inning. Swings on a high fastball and misses it.
- 1:07:20Now look at this Yankee and feels short enough.
- 1:07:23Kenny's way in on the little cut curve there at third base. So's Alou.
- 1:07:29They're going to take a bunt away from this fellow. Swung on and missed. No balls and two strikes.
- 1:07:39Rivers got into the first ball game and got a bunch single as a bench hitter.
- 1:07:45He got a bunt base hit in this ball game. Yankees taking the bunt away from him.
- 1:07:49The O2 pitch goes. Fastball popped up and foul third quarter of the Yankee dugout.
- 1:07:54That ball's going to be out of play. Gibbs is after it, but it's at least 10 rows back.
- 1:08:00Still no balls and two strikes on Rivers.
- 1:08:06You know, Phil, if this guy can run from home plate to first in 3.1 seconds, Mano was dived at 3.2.
- 1:08:12That means he can get there faster than Mickey. Yeah.
- 1:08:16And Mickey could really fly when he was younger.
- 1:08:19He does get that little quickie jump at the plate.
- 1:08:22Took Mickey a little while to get started, but once he did, he could fly.
- 1:08:28Sidearm curveball misses one and two.
- 1:08:33He scores tied 1-1 when the top of the fifth went out and nobody on.
- 1:08:41Line drive, right field, foul right outside the line. That's missed by about a foot.
- 1:08:46That was a breaking ball. Rivers hung with it and lined it past Alou,
- 1:08:51who was on the right side of the right field line.
- 1:08:58And the first base on fire, Don Dinkinger, waved it foul.
- 1:09:11California has one run on three hits. Yankees have one run on two.
- 1:09:17Yankees ready with the 1-2 pitch. Best ball popped up and foul territory.
- 1:09:22Kenny, the third baseman, fouls for it. Waits on it and has it.
- 1:09:27Two outs now as Rivers fouls off to Kenny.
- 1:09:36And here's Ken McMullen. McMullen 0-1. He bounced the third first time up.
- 1:09:41And his sacrifice fly to right field, Joe Ginn the pitcher, Tom Murphy,
- 1:09:47back in the third inning for the Angels only run of this ballgame.
- 1:09:52McMullen now has 51 runs batted in for the Angels. He leads them in that category.
- 1:09:57Spencer, the first baseman, has 43.
- 1:10:01McMullen, the big right-handed hitter, chokes up on the bat just a little.
- 1:10:04May play him straight away. Gaggage is ready over the head. Curve ball misses outside.
- 1:10:11Billy Cowan on deck.
- 1:10:181-0 pitch. Breaking ball held up. Two balls in those strikes.
- 1:10:27McMullen had ideas but got the bat back.
- 1:10:35Yankees won the first game 3-0 behind Pritz Peterson.
- 1:10:40Pritz won his fourth game of the year. He's lost seven.
- 1:10:432-0 pitch now. Ball strike. Best ball.
- 1:10:47Two balls in the strike to McMullen.
- 1:10:51Pritz had to do a lot of pitching that last inning to keep the shutout going, but he got out of the inning.
- 1:10:56High ball three. Three and one.
- 1:11:01The Angels put the first two men on, but Peterson got the next three out.
- 1:11:05To preserve his victory, his shutout is victory number 12.
- 1:11:163-1 pitch now. Head on low ball four.
- 1:11:19Gaggage loses them and McMullen jogs on down the first base.
- 1:11:26That's the third walk given up by Gaggage. He's lost one man intensely. That was Pogosi.
- 1:11:32Cowan's ahead of Pogosi on the on-deck serve. Billy's 0-2. Bounce the second and pop the short.
- 1:11:39Cowan having a good year for the Angels.
- 1:11:42Over 300. He came into the ball game batting 320. He hadn't been up that much. Only 127 times.
- 1:11:48He has 40 hits. First pitch to it.
- 1:11:53Curve ball is one on a miss.
- 1:11:57Now on a good high fastball here.
- 1:12:00In fact, he could drive that high fastball a long way.
- 1:12:05McMullen not a threat to steal, but a little holes in the course with two outs.
- 1:12:09Here's the 0-1 pitch to Cowan. Fastball almost hits him inside. He makes him skip rope a little bit.
- 1:12:161-1. Gaggage looks quick.
- 1:12:20Looks like he has a good fastball.
- 1:12:28Stuck out the first two men he faced and hasn't gotten another one. Looks like he has a good fastball tonight.
- 1:12:35Now it comes to the belt. Checks McMullen at first.
- 1:12:38Pitches down low in the dirt. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:12:46Oakland this afternoon beat Boston 9-2.
- 1:12:51Kansas City be watching 2-0. The first game was a double header.
- 1:12:54Washington leads the second game 2-0 at the end of 3 over Kansas City.
- 1:12:582-1 pitch to Cowan. Pull on and fouled off. A breaking ball. Counts even 2-2.
- 1:13:06So Washington looks to be quick with Kansas City leads the second game 2-0 at the end of 3.
- 1:13:12The Detroit Tigers with Mickey Lowich winning number 19 beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3.
- 1:13:18Cleveland beat Chicago 6-2. And Baltimore is up in Minnesota.
- 1:13:24The game should just about be getting underway.
- 1:13:28Now Gaggage checks McMullen at first. 2-2 pitch to Cowan.
- 1:13:32Kirkball, fouled on and missed. Stuck him out. So Gaggage picks up strikeout number 3.
- 1:13:38And that's it for California in the fifth. No runs, no hits, no errors. One walk and a man left on.
- 1:13:44At the end of 4-1. The Yankees won and the Angels won.

- 1:14:50Well, Lou gets another shot at Murphy in the Yankees' half of the fifth.
- 1:14:57The Lou was up when Mercer was cut down trying to steal a second in the fourth.
- 1:15:02Leap Phase 2 hasn't had an official time-up. Takes the ball low and away.
- 1:15:08Now Lou walks over the base and scores on Clark's single back in the second inning.
- 1:15:15Score is tied 1-1.
- 1:15:17Murphy's ready. The right-hander deals.
- 1:15:21Down low, ball two.
- 1:15:23Lou started a swing, but held up. Now he looks down at Hauser.
- 1:15:27It says, let's go, swing the bat.
- 1:15:29Felipe wearing glasses.
- 1:15:33Stands deep in the box, slightly closed pass.
- 1:15:37That helped almost straight up and down over the right shoulder.
- 1:15:40He almost hits him inside, 3-0.
- 1:15:48Murphy walked to Lou the first time.
- 1:15:52Tom's also struck out a batter.
- 1:15:55Let's see, here's a 3-0 pitch. Will he hit out? No, he's going to take it.
- 1:15:59It's Carl Streit.
- 1:16:04Or it's Clark on deck.
- 1:16:10Murphy looks in to Stevenson.
- 1:16:12Over his head, 3-1 pitch. Popped up towards shallow center field.
- 1:16:16Barry's hurrying in. Can he get through? He's still running in.
- 1:16:20Dives, gets to one-handed, ball falls out.
- 1:16:22A little boy in the second base. He is out there.
- 1:16:25Felipe hustling around first base.
- 1:16:30Well, and in the second, I believe Alomar, the little second baseman,
- 1:16:36picked the ball up after it got out of Barry's glove and threw the second,
- 1:16:40the Fregoti covering, to get a Lou.
- 1:16:42So give a Lou a single to center.
- 1:16:45He's out from four to six as he tried to stretch it into a double.
- 1:16:53A Lou hustling all the way just was nipped at second base.
- 1:16:57I tell you, if Alomar hadn't been out there, Lou would have been at second.
- 1:17:00Because Barry was on the ground. Yep.
- 1:17:02All right, here's Clark, off one for one with an RBI.
- 1:17:10In fact, I think Alomar, for those of you who could have got that ball.
- 1:17:13Oh, yes, they gave up too quickly on him.
- 1:17:17Now the 0-1 pitch to Clark. Swung on, fouled off, held by the catcher,
- 1:17:22he was in the balls and two strikes.
- 1:17:27Well, Baltimore at least leads one of them over Minnesota.
- 1:17:31Conn Buford got his 16th home run in the first inning up there.
- 1:17:36Almost hit him inside. Just missed the house.
- 1:17:41One ball and two strikes. Clark batting left-handed against Murphy.
- 1:17:47All right in. Four-side, one-one, with the last of the fifths that went out.
- 1:17:53One-two pitch is nuked out in the left field. That might be trouble.
- 1:17:57Cowan cannot get to it, falls in front of him. So Clark, two for two.
- 1:18:05Also on the first base with this second base hit of the ball game and the Yankees' fourth.
- 1:18:12That'll bring in Frank Baker, the shortstop. Baker flies to left first time up.
- 1:18:23He's playing for Gene Michael, Michael being given a rest the second game.
- 1:18:27Gene played the first game. The Yankees won 3-0 behind Peterson.
- 1:18:31Throw the first. Clark is back.
- 1:18:34Tell you, this Murphy really throws over him and Clark gets it first.
- 1:18:39House must have stolen quite a few bases off of him.
- 1:18:44Now he stretches. Swung on. Miss.
- 1:18:48No ball from the strike.
- 1:18:53Clark has 13 stolen bases on the air.
- 1:19:01Murphy looking in at Stevenson.
- 1:19:04Now he comes to the big stretch. He'll one pitch inside a ball, one-on-one.
- 1:19:12Jim Spencer's holding Clark at first.
- 1:19:19The angel outfield not too deep.
- 1:19:22Now Billy Cowan in left. Kenny Barry in center. Vicki Rivers in right.
- 1:19:29Now Murphy comes to the belt. Quick throw to first. Clark dives back.
- 1:19:34And Spencer had it go over toward Clark to get the ball and jumped over.
- 1:19:38That ball gets loose on that right field line. House will end up at third.
- 1:19:42Now the stretch again. Clark leads.
- 1:19:44One-one pitch. Bounce over the mound. Fagosi has it. Tag second. Throw to first. Double play.
- 1:19:55So Baker bounces into a quick double play and the angels come out of the inning with no runs on one hit.
- 1:20:01No errors and nobody left on base.
- 1:20:04No runs on two hits. I'm sorry. There were no errors and nobody left on.
- 1:20:09So at the end of five, the New York Yankees won. The California Angels won.
- 1:20:17Our co-supreme, great gasoline. You may only get a little more mileage on it.
- 1:20:28But sometimes a little more is enough. Our co-supreme, great gasoline. Our co-supreme, great gasoline.
- 1:20:43Busy man on the go. Busy man high and low. Busy man on the job. Busy man to show. Busy man on the way. Busy man running low.
- 1:20:57Our co-supreme, great gasoline. You may only get a little more mileage on it.
- 1:21:07But sometimes a little more is enough. Our co-supreme, great gasoline. Our co-supreme, great gasoline.
- 1:21:20What did I say? The score was 5-5? The score, well it's tied but it's 1-1.
- 1:21:27You know a lot of times I'll say something to somebody and say you know what you said and I'll say I don't believe it.
- 1:21:33You're trying to help me on those hits and got off whack here.
- 1:21:38Jim Fregosi will lead off now on the 6th for the Angels.
- 1:21:43And he pops the first pitch up and fouls territory. Gibbs over towards the first baseline.
- 1:21:48Waits on it and grabs it. So Fregosi cuts on the first pitch and he fouls out to the catcher, Jake Gibbs.
- 1:21:55That'll bring in Jim Spencer. Spencer's over one. He's walked and lined the right field.
- 1:22:02I tell you this guy really scares you the way he swings the bat. It doesn't make any difference if it's a left hand or a right hander's throw.
- 1:22:07He gets some shots in the first game and one in this game.
- 1:22:12He's only batting 235.
- 1:22:17Left hander against catcher is the left-handed throw. They play him to pull.
- 1:22:23First pitch is down low. Gibbs blocks it. Goes up in the air.
- 1:22:35Spencer, what game do you play here at Cain?
- 1:22:38The Hurst-Santelot game. When he was still in high school, huh?
- 1:22:44He likes his stadium. High ball too. I understand he don't run that game. Just a kid.
- 1:22:52Jim Spencer.
- 1:22:57Checkers behind now. Two balls and no strikes. Mike deals a 2-0 twist.
- 1:23:02Fastball popped up. Straight back. Foul. Out of play.
- 1:23:15Atlanta leads Houston 6-1 at the end of 2.
- 1:23:28The Metro on the coast. They're playing the San Diego Padres.
- 1:23:32See where your old buddy Yogi Barrow's mentioned there's a possible manager out there at San Diego Padres.
- 1:23:37Yes, I saw that. I know Yogi wants to manage, but that's a little far away.
- 1:23:42Second ball misses inside. 3-1 on Spencer.
- 1:23:54Well, nobody on. We're the top of the sixth. Score's tied 1-1.
- 1:23:57Kekich is ready. Fastball popped up toward first base in foul territory. A loop.
- 1:24:02Right near the wall. Backs up and grabs it for the second down.
- 1:24:10Two out. Both on foul pops.
- 1:24:13For goal, he fouled out to the catcher. Spencer out to the first baseman.
- 1:24:17That'll bring in Kenny Berry, the center fielder.
- 1:24:21Berry a right-handed hitter. He's 1-2. Single the right and bounce the third.
- 1:24:35Kekich is ready now. First pitch to Berry. Forward center field. Deep to center field.
- 1:24:40Mercer cruises to his left. Waits on it and grabs it with one hand.
- 1:24:44Well, that's it. Kekich gets the Angels out. Three up and three down.
- 1:24:49So at the end of 5-1 half, the score's still the same. The Yankees won. California Angels won.
- 1:24:59Good shot.
- 1:25:02Run around a tennis court on a hot summer day and you really run up a thirst.
- 1:25:08When that last set is over, you'll be set for a couple of beers.
- 1:25:13So today, there's only one beer that'll do.
- 1:25:18Shaper, Shaper, Shaper, Shaper, Shaper is the one beer to have when you're having more than one. Shaper pleasure doesn't fade even when your thirst is done.
- 1:25:37The most rewarding flavor in this man's world for people who are having fun. Shaper is the one beer to have when you're having even more than one.
- 1:25:57Mike Kekich will lead off with the Yankees in the last of the sixth. This is the second time Kekich has led an inning off. He led the third off and struck out.
- 1:26:07Mike Battingly handed against Murphy. Murphy's down low with a ball.
- 1:26:13They give Kekich a lot of center field, straight away center.
- 1:26:18Nicky Rivers is playing him near the line and then shot on right field. Barry's in right center and then shot down low ball too. Left fielder counts straight away and he's in behind the shortstop for Gosey almost.
- 1:26:31There's quite a bit of room in dead center field for Kekich.
- 1:26:35There's a 2-0 pitch to him now.
- 1:26:38Ball 3 high.
- 1:26:403-0.
- 1:26:42He's going to have to take this and he doesn't even bother to look at Houser. He knows the sign that he'll get. It'll be red. Stop. Do not swing.
- 1:26:50Better not swing because it's 50 bucks.
- 1:26:53Then he takes a strike.
- 1:26:56He does not look at Houser again. Now he takes a peek at him. Mike will probably take this pitch too.
- 1:27:02Murphy's ready. Here's a 3-1 pitch.
- 1:27:05And it's taken. Ball falls right too.
- 1:27:10Full count now on Kekich.
- 1:27:13Mike wants to get on any way he can.
- 1:27:15So he took Murphy all the way. Here's a payoff pitch.
- 1:27:20Stopped out in the shallow right center. Grabbed by the second baseman Alomar.
- 1:27:27That was a little humpback line that Alomar hustle out in shallow right center field and grab.
- 1:27:33There's one out.
- 1:27:39Mike went as far as he could with Murphy before flying to the second baseman.
- 1:27:46Here's Jerry Kenny. Kenny's 0 for 2. He's bounced back to the pitch and he's bounced to the second.
- 1:27:514-5. 1-1 with the last of the 6. Yankees won the first game 3-0.
- 1:27:57First pitch now to Kenny. Breaking ball misses inside.
- 1:28:06Now time is up. Jake Gibbs on deck.
- 1:28:131-0 pitch. That ball gets the outside corner.
- 1:28:171-1. Upfield straightens up. They play straight away for Kenny, not too deep.
- 1:28:23Dallin still in close in left field. River's not too deep in right field.
- 1:28:28Kenny backs out again and calls time.
- 1:28:35Murphy looking in at Stevenson. Right hander deals the 1-1 pitch.
- 1:28:39Line drive left field. Can Cowan get to it? Yes, he's right there. Grabs it.
- 1:28:43One time Billy Cowan playing perfectly left field. Made about five quick steps in.
- 1:28:48Grabs Kenny's line drive and there are two outs.
- 1:28:52We're playing Jerry close all over.
- 1:28:56Jerry hits the ball well but right at Cowan. That'll bring in Gibbs.
- 1:29:01Gibbs is also 0-2. He's bounced a second, bounced back to the pitcher.
- 1:29:06Yankees only have four hits.
- 1:29:10Mercer has a single.
- 1:29:13Alou has a single. And Clark has two singles.
- 1:29:17Gibbs cuts on the first pitch to break the ball. Flings through it. No balls in the strut.
- 1:29:23Two outs and nobody on. Four tied, 1-1.
- 1:29:29Yankees are batting in the sixth. Bobby Mercer on deck.
- 1:29:32Breaking ball bounced toward the first baseman's center. He'll have it easily, such as the play of bags.
- 1:29:37And that's it for the Yankees.
- 1:29:41Gibbs bounces out of center on his distance. For the Yankees in the sixth.
- 1:29:44Three men up and the three men down.
- 1:29:47So at the end of sixth, full inning to play. The Yankees have one run on four hits.
- 1:29:52They've made three errors.
- 1:29:54California Angels have one run on three hits. They've played errorless baseball.
- 1:29:59Looking at the scoreboard, Oakland beat Boston 9-2 this afternoon.
- 1:30:03Diego Osegi was the winner. The loser, Kenny Brett.
- 1:30:07Home run, Tatum for Boston. And Scott got his 19th in the seventh.
- 1:30:13So Oakland 9-2.
- 1:30:17The Hurricanes have a doubleheader. Kansas City shot Washington 2-0.
- 1:30:22Right to winner, Sheldon Fox, the loser.
- 1:30:24In the second game, Washington leads 2-0 at the end of 4-1.5.
- 1:30:29This afternoon, Detroit moves into second place in the American League East by edging Milwaukee Brewers 4-3.
- 1:30:35Mickey Low is what his 19th game. He's lost eight. Marty Patton was loser.
- 1:30:40This afternoon, Chicago beat Chicago lost to the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:30:44Cleveland 6. Chicago 2. Foster the winner, Wood, the loser.
- 1:30:49Baltimore leads Minnesota 3-0 at the end of half an inning.
- 1:30:52Buford got a 16th home run and Merv Redeman his tenth.
- 1:30:56All the games in the National League are at night. New York to San Diego.
- 1:31:00St. Louis 3. Pittsburgh 2 at the end of 5. Philadelphia's out of L.A.
- 1:31:04Atlanta 7. Houston 1 at the end of 3-1.5.
- 1:31:08So the Williams got his, no that's not good, that's their old ways.
- 1:31:11Got his 20th home run for Atlanta and the fourth was one-on.
- 1:31:13Those are the only games scheduled. Schedule in now with us.
- 1:31:16Coming over to TV is Frank Smithsor.
- 1:31:19Okay Bill White, thank you very much and good evening once again.
- 1:31:22Here's the catcher, John Stevenson, to lead off the seventh inning for the California Angels.
- 1:31:26He's a left-handed batter. Really spreads out in the batter's box.
- 1:31:29Swings in the first pitch, pops it up.
- 1:31:31Down the first baseline, ball territory, a loose ball is caught and makes the catch.
- 1:31:35Jake Gibbs was bound against it and a loose ball, he lost the ball.
- 1:31:38So there's one away on one pitch.
- 1:31:43And here's Tom Murphy, the pitcher.
- 1:31:46Murphy had an infield hit.
- 1:31:49Went to second on Kenny's throwing error and went to third.
- 1:31:54Scored on McMullen's sacrifice fly in the third inning.
- 1:31:59And he fouled out to Jake. He's one for two.
- 1:32:05Pitch time. Change out for a strike.
- 1:32:10Jenkins has got a good change of pace tonight.
- 1:32:20Out of the left field, not too deep.
- 1:32:23Coming hard is White. He's in on one makes the catch.
- 1:32:26Andrew, two down.
- 1:32:35About an hour will be Sandy Alomar.
- 1:32:46Alomar's truck out, reached out an error by Frank Baker and flied to center.
- 1:32:51He is 0 for 3.
- 1:32:59Right hand hit it.
- 1:33:01Against left hand pitching, Alomar is a twitch in it.
- 1:33:08Wings in the first pitch, Bob, all the better.
- 1:33:11Mercer backs off, he's under it, glove up, makes the one-hand catch over his head, and the side is retired.
- 1:33:17And that is the easy of turning so far for Jenkins, who has now retired seven men in a row.
- 1:33:23Nothing across for the California Angels at the end of 6 1 half. The score, Yankees 1 and California 1.
- 1:33:52Two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, nine, nine.
- 1:34:08Well, this ball game is the last time the Angels will be in Yankee Stadium this year.
- 1:34:37But the Oakland A's come in right after these people.
- 1:34:41The Oakland A's will be in tomorrow night, Saturday afternoon, and then bright of blue on Sunday.
- 1:34:47All fans with the last name of PLUE, you can prove it, will go to the Blue Booth and they'll get in Grandstand Reserve seat.
- 1:34:56All right, Frank Mercer.
- 1:34:59Bobbie Mercer will lead off the bottom half of the seventh with the accolades of the 12, the pitch guard's long on a missed strike line.
- 1:35:07Mercer keeps shaking his right hand. Looks like he's got his tape now, Bill.
- 1:35:12He's got a little bit of a flaster down there and he's a heavy. He does have a piece of tape on him. That hand has bothered him a lot in the double header.
- 1:35:30All right, the crowd has come to the right here in the bottom half of the seventh.
- 1:35:33Wide out and here's the pitch to Mercer. One ball, one strike.
- 1:35:50Wide right, handling right hand and real loose out on the ground.
- 1:35:58He's got a little bit of a soft breeze came along and blew him over.
- 1:36:03Here's Ray, really looks relaxed. That's the one. That's the kick of the pitch. Ta-da!
- 1:36:08And he pops up and is channel left center. Billy Cowan's coming in for it. He's under it so let's see how they're there next weekend.
- 1:36:15Now Mercer is retired. The batter will be Roy White.
- 1:36:19He's filled out by Stevenson, running for base and leading out for second. Then he's flat on the center field in the fourth so Roy is over two.
- 1:36:28Just in as a left hander against the right hander, Tom Murphy.
- 1:36:36Murphy, left leg bad. He's got his toe over his left foot. It's like he's just resting on the ground.
- 1:36:43There's the pitch that he's got on and it's right back to the pitch where the barrel into the bat went all the way down to first base.
- 1:36:49As it throws completely in half and White is thrown out. Murphy to Spencer at first.
- 1:36:54Spencer at the ball coming from the mound, the bat coming at him from the plate.
- 1:36:57This is the New York Yankee baseball network. We pause for face and identification.
- 1:37:07This is WGY, a general electric broadcasting company station, connected in New York.
- 1:37:18Ron Bloomberg's about in the mound. The first pitch to him is going out and bowled back off the jump protector of Mr. Schallert.
- 1:37:25Right wide.
- 1:37:30Door-tied one to one. The Yankees won the first game three to nothing behind Griffin Peterson.
- 1:37:38Peterson scattered nine hits to pick up his second shutout.
- 1:37:44This is 12-3.
- 1:37:47First-second on 12.
- 1:37:51Wind up on the own watch. Way outside.
- 1:37:55Peterson has now one-twelve and lost seven. He has won his last six decisions.
- 1:38:04Now Murphy keeps the ball in the glove. Now takes it out. Hides it behind the right leg.
- 1:38:09Starts to widen it. And the pitch. Outside.
- 1:38:13The hitter gets just as good for the baseball as Murphy brings his right hand around in the wide net.
- 1:38:23The ball looks at the baseball. Goes to slam.
- 1:38:27Rips for a good breath behind the pitcher's rubber.
- 1:38:32And he's two-and-one delivery.
- 1:38:34Wide out the center field, but there he is right there and he makes the catch.
- 1:38:37That ball was knuffling a little bit going out toward Barry.
- 1:38:41The Tigers retired in order. And now seven Yankees in a row have gone down since Clark's base hit in the fifth.
- 1:38:48The second draw at the end of seven is the Yankees won the Angels' watch.
- 1:38:53If you're going to move, why not do it yourself with U-Haul, as more than six million families do every year?

- 1:39:56Last American night, Tuesday, September 7th, it'll be at 8 p.m.
- 1:40:00The Red Sox will be in.
- 1:40:02And of course, Philippe Lui with the Yankees are from San Domingo.
- 1:40:07And then Mononso said he's going to come in, then he's playing down in Mexico.
- 1:40:11He is still playing, I mean, yeah.
- 1:40:13And then he's a 50-diner managing and playing first base.
- 1:40:15Maybe Resudo is right about first bases.
- 1:40:19Hi, Mickey Rivers right here, pal.
- 1:40:21The first pitch back, strike one.
- 1:40:24That's going to be Tuesday, September 7th.
- 1:40:27The Yankees are going to be playing the Red Sox.
- 1:40:30Special things for some special people.
- 1:40:33They're going to have a lot of Spanish food here at the concession stand from the stands.
- 1:40:36It's going to get fucked in hell if they're doing anything in Spanish.
- 1:40:40Oh, I'm good. Right to call.
- 1:40:45And I'm going to go over there and do anything in Spanish, officer.
- 1:40:49I'll go over there and do anything in Spanish.
- 1:40:51We'll bring him over here and do anything in Spanish.
- 1:40:54Can you imagine? I'll go over there and do anything in English, boy.
- 1:40:58Night three is called.
- 1:41:00Rivers at the last pitch that is called out on strike.
- 1:41:06Breakout number four for Mike Kekich.
- 1:41:15And the batter will be Ken McMullen.
- 1:41:17He was the last angel to reach base.
- 1:41:19He walked in the fifth inning.
- 1:41:23Kikich has retired eight in a row.
- 1:41:27McMullen right-hand batter.
- 1:41:30Back ball is in there for a tall strike.
- 1:41:324-1. Door side, 1-1. Yankees won the opener three-nil.
- 1:41:42Back pitch, up high, 1-1.
- 1:41:47Angels have not done too well this year against left-handers.
- 1:41:50They've won 14 but lost 23.
- 1:41:561-1 pitch. Basketball inside, back to the mound.
- 1:42:05Yankees against left-handers at 1-21 and lost 27,
- 1:42:09including the first game of the twin build in which they beat Rudy May.
- 1:42:15Kekich is 2-1 pitch.
- 1:42:17High to McMullen. Ball three, three and one.
- 1:42:19McMullen now steps back, looks down at third base coach Rocky Bridges.
- 1:42:27I would presume McMullen would be on his own with a three-and-one count.
- 1:42:33Sully Codd is on deck.
- 1:42:35Kekich lines. Here comes the pitch.
- 1:42:37Wong-on and lays down the right field line.
- 1:42:40Fading foul into the feed.
- 1:42:44The count is full, three and two.
- 1:43:00Kekich takes the side with both feet on the level.
- 1:43:02Rocks back on the right foot to kick the pitch.
- 1:43:04Wong-on hit on the ground at third.
- 1:43:06Kenny is up with a deep.
- 1:43:08The throw to first base, inside.
- 1:43:10McMullen is out at first base.
- 1:43:12That was a scorcher.
- 1:43:14Jerry Kenny took a step to his right, got in front of the ball,
- 1:43:17came up with it, and fired on the first.
- 1:43:25Sully Codd now.
- 1:43:28Codd is grounded out to second.
- 1:43:30Fox is short and struck out.
- 1:43:36Down went two for three against Peterson in the opener.
- 1:43:46Kekich kicks the deal.
- 1:43:48High throw ball.
- 1:43:51Right is now in a nine-minute row.
- 1:44:02And the one-oh pitch.
- 1:44:05Fox out on a spark calling for it.
- 1:44:08And on the skin of the infield, he makes the catch through
- 1:44:10by the other side.
- 1:44:11It's ten and a roll for Kekich.
- 1:44:13Three up, three down.
- 1:44:14Nothing across for the Cowlingos.
- 1:44:16At the end of seven and a half, the score,
- 1:44:18New York 1 and California 1.
- 1:44:23What would you think of a restaurant that guaranteed good service
- 1:44:26or your money back?
- 1:44:27You'd be ahead of the game either way, right?
- 1:44:29Well, that's pretty much what happens with
- 1:44:31our Go Red Ball dealer service.
- 1:44:33If your Red Ball service dealer doesn't clean your windshield
- 1:44:36or offer to check your oil, weather permitting,

- 1:44:50So you get the same service from a dealer who doesn't know you,
- 1:44:53as you do from a guy who's known you for years.

- 1:45:06You're ahead of the game whether you get it or not.
- 1:45:09The record is going to be Boston 9-2.
- 1:45:32That's the only one we'll give because we're ready to go, right?
- 1:45:34Yes, we are.
- 1:45:36Here's the guy at seven-minute, and we're all ready to pitch to Felipe Alou,
- 1:45:39who singles in the fifth.
- 1:45:41Let's do it.
- 1:45:43Cormac in on the ground, a short, played on to Hops,
- 1:45:45pass to Regosti, over to first in the dirt,
- 1:45:47by Taken by Spencer.
- 1:45:50And Alou first ball hitting grounds out short to first.
- 1:45:53Try to stay Alou in the fifth, single to center field,
- 1:45:56as Ken Berry, one of the few times, did not get a good jump on the ball.
- 1:46:02He hit off his glove as he dove for it,
- 1:46:04Berry as he went down, hollering to Alomar.
- 1:46:07Throw to second, throw to second, Alomar there to main,
- 1:46:10and Alou trying to stretch it.
- 1:46:13Hops, Clark, he's singled in the fifth,
- 1:46:15and Clark is the last Yankee to reach base.
- 1:46:22A wide up, and the pitch to him.
- 1:46:24Brib ball is over first right.
- 1:46:27Black is two for two, single to center and single to left.
- 1:46:31Frank Baker is down on this.
- 1:46:35Now the 0-1 set.
- 1:46:36Clark gets it right back through the box,
- 1:46:38but through his right, Alomar flies to down,
- 1:46:40looks for the first park is up.
- 1:46:49Do away, and Frank Baker will step in.
- 1:46:51He'll fly to left and drive it into a double play.
- 1:47:05So far over the last six innings.
- 1:47:09Now Murphy has faced a minimum of three men per inning.
- 1:47:14Good.
- 1:47:15Right back to it.
- 1:47:17Murphy throws the first base.
- 1:47:19Baker is out, and the crowd is retired on an easy inning for John Murphy.
- 1:47:25Three up, three down.
- 1:47:26Nothing across for the Yankees,
- 1:47:27and at the end of eighth the score is New York 1 and California 1.
- 1:47:33They have been switching around lately looking for a better brand of beer.
- 1:48:01Here's a way to make your next switch your last.
- 1:48:04Switch to Schaeffer and discover flavor that doesn't fade beer after beer.
- 1:48:08You'll find that Schaeffer stays bright and rewarding first frosty cold glass to last.
- 1:48:13And you just may decide that the one beer for you is Schaeffer,
- 1:48:17the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 1:48:22Schaeffer, the one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 1:48:43Jim Legosi waiting to lead off the ninth inning here.
- 1:48:48Legosi has slide to left field on a nice catch by Roy White.
- 1:48:52Walks and fouled out the gate.
- 1:49:01Legosi a right-hand running.
- 1:49:06Take lane just up the middle.
- 1:49:08The deep man in the outfield is white and left.
- 1:49:12And a big joy.
- 1:49:14Low and inside, ball on.
- 1:49:16Jerry Kenny guarding the line of third.
- 1:49:18He's just a step off the foul line.
- 1:49:23Deep.
- 1:49:26Infield is deep.
- 1:49:27Outfield, as we said, right away with Roy White very deep and left.
- 1:49:31Next pitch coming.
- 1:49:32Fastball is over for Drake.
- 1:49:34It's 1 and 1 on Legosi.
- 1:49:44Legosi takes five.
- 1:49:47Ball to two and one.
- 1:49:54Only two games yet to start.
- 1:49:56That's Philadelphia, Los Angeles and New York and San Diego in the National League.
- 1:50:05Two-one-fifth.
- 1:50:19Three balls and a strike to Legosi.
- 1:50:27Three-one-good coming.
- 1:50:28One on about to third.
- 1:50:30Kenny has it on two hops.
- 1:50:31Fires the first base in time.
- 1:50:35Legosi is out.
- 1:50:38That's 11 on the roll for Kenny.
- 1:50:42Last man to reach was McMullen who walked in the fifth inning.
- 1:50:48The ball game has been in the hands of the pitchers.
- 1:50:52The Yankees even survived one inning in which the Angels had two base hits a walk and the Yankees come in three yards with the only scored one run.
- 1:51:07Jim Sponsordow has walked line to right and fouled out to a low and first.
- 1:51:12Left hand batter holds about high.
- 1:51:22Bends at the waist, makes the pitch ten high ball on.
- 1:51:33Ready again.
- 1:51:43Going to his right and back towards Cuddlefield.
- 1:51:47Reached out and backhanded it.
- 1:51:49I thought that was a base hit as soon as it left the bat.
- 1:51:51Looks like we're looping there.
- 1:51:53Off and running as the ball as the bat got to it.
- 1:51:58Good catch by the Hawks.
- 1:52:02Two down here in the foul of the ninth inning and Ken Berry steps in.
- 1:52:06Here's the right hand hitter.
- 1:52:19Looks like Gibbs is complaining a little bit about where Berry is planting his right foot.
- 1:52:24Now Gibbs is going to give a little grab as Mr. Schavak backs Berry.
- 1:52:29He's all right.
- 1:52:32First pitch time.
- 1:52:33Blowing outside ball on.
- 1:52:40Berry backs out.
- 1:52:43Now in again.
- 1:52:47Check his winds and here's the pitch.
- 1:52:49Flash ball for a strike at point of mark.
- 1:52:58The base is empty.
- 1:53:01Kekich whips it to the plate.
- 1:53:02Change up his line.
- 1:53:03Overbaker base hit.
- 1:53:05Out of the left center field, Bobby Mercer gets to the ball in front of Roy White.
- 1:53:09Fires it into second base.
- 1:53:13And a single for Berry is the first hit since the third inning for the California Angels.
- 1:53:21Kekich has retired twelve men in a row.
- 1:53:24Starting with Cowan who struck out to end the fifth.
- 1:53:28Got the start in order in the sixth, the seventh, and the eighth, and the first two hitters here in the ninth.
- 1:53:35Now Ken Berry, who came in batting 2-0-4, has his second hit in the ball game.
- 1:53:42The batter will be John Stephenson, the catcher, over three.
- 1:53:51He's lined out.
- 1:53:54Blind out, grounded out, and popped out.
- 1:53:58Flash ball is low, dug out of the dirt by Gibbs.
- 1:54:00Nice save.
- 1:54:01Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:54:07Hey, with the pitcher up here, Frankie's got to really be alive for the hit and run.
- 1:54:12Stephenson has Kekich and the old two balls and no strikes.
- 1:54:16He only has one stolen base. I thought he was a lot quicker than that.
- 1:54:21Two-0 pitch, long iron and drilled deep at foul down the left side.
- 1:54:25Into the three for the foul ball all the way.
- 1:54:33Except for Alomar, nobody runs much in this ball club.
- 1:54:36Alomar's got 32 stolen bases.
- 1:54:39Rivers has five and nobody else in the starting lineup has more than one.
- 1:54:43Here's the pitch. Low, fast ball, it's three and one.
- 1:54:48The pitcher, Tom Murphy, is on deck.
- 1:54:51And the Yankee bullpen will go to work.
- 1:54:53Kekich is due to lead off the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 1:54:58There's also some action in left center field out in the Angel Bullpen.
- 1:55:05Three-1 pitch coming here.
- 1:55:07Long iron, missed by two.
- 1:55:10With all the two out, the base runner at first will be released.
- 1:55:13Ken Berry will break with the pitch.
- 1:55:22If Stephenson gets on, Murphy may not come to bat.
- 1:55:26It's warming somebody up out there, let's see.
- 1:55:31If Stephenson doesn't get on, it's definite that Murphy will not come to bat.
- 1:55:35The pitch runner going, it's wide.
- 1:55:40Ball was a catch at the line drive and that ball was matched.
- 1:55:44But Alomar did it and the strategy died.
- 1:55:47No runs, but they did. No errors, and a man left.
- 1:55:50At the end of 8 1 half, the score, the York 1 and California 1.
- 1:55:54Did you know that you can cut moving costs by 50 percent or more with a U-Haul rental truck or trailer?

- 1:56:47And Airways Rent-A-Car, 660 Albany, Shaker Road, Airport Exit at Northway.
- 1:56:52Or consult the yellow pages for the U-Haul dealer nearest you.
- 1:56:56The Barrettville White, the Angels have made a change out of shortstop.
- 1:57:01Sid O'Brien has replaced Jim Fragosi at shortstop.
- 1:57:05And O'Brien with that fifth.
- 1:57:10Mike Kekes is going to lead off the bottom half of the ninth inning for the Angels.
- 1:57:18Ralph Rock is giving Kekes a chance to win or lose this ballgame himself after going this far.
- 1:57:23Fouling only four hits to the California Angels so Kekes will back to lead off the ninth inning.
- 1:57:28He has struck out and popped up.
- 1:57:30A pitch joy.
- 1:57:31Great ball is back, back over the match to his right, Alomar.
- 1:57:35Back-handed, can't get it, the ball is on two over second base.
- 1:57:38Kekes did not realize the ball got through.
- 1:57:41Ball's up at first base.
- 1:57:43And still at the right room.
- 1:57:46Alomar tried to back-hand it and did not come up with it.
- 1:57:49It will be scored a base hit.
- 1:57:59That is the Yankees fifth hit of the bargain.
- 1:58:02Here is Jerry Kenney, 0 for 3.
- 1:58:20The ball is loose out of right field.
- 1:58:22That's why time has been called.
- 1:58:24It is retrieved by Rivers and returned to the Yankee bullfans from Weston Cain.
- 1:58:28Wonder who's warming up out there to throw that ball over the game all the way to the playing field.
- 1:58:37By the pitch to Kenney.
- 1:58:39He squares off.
- 1:58:40He bumps it foul.
- 1:58:46They had Jerry Kenney surrounded.
- 1:58:49McClennan from third, Spencer from first, the pitcher.
- 1:58:53They formed four sides of the box around him.
- 1:58:58Of course, the catcher, Stevenson, formed the fourth side.
- 1:59:04He was surrounded.
- 1:59:13Has three men charged him, even the pitcher.
- 1:59:16Going wide now, going.
- 1:59:18The wind up by Murphy, the stretch by Murphy, the pitch.
- 1:59:22Kenney takes it low this time.
- 1:59:24Pulls the bat away from the box.
- 1:59:26That is one and one.
- 1:59:30Both bullfans stay active.
- 1:59:40Jekylltons first base, Spencer holding them on and ready to charge with the pitch.
- 1:59:45Stretch by Murphy, here comes the pitch.
- 1:59:47Kenney squares, bumps it down to third base five.
- 1:59:49McClennan up with it, looks to second, throws to first.
- 1:59:52Kenney is just out.
- 1:59:54And Jekylltons on the sacrifice, throws to second base.
- 1:59:58Throw to play five to four on the sacrifice.
- 2:00:01McClennan to Alomar, cover.
- 2:00:04And let's see if Jekylltons will make a trip to the mound.
- 2:00:12On a play like that.
- 2:00:14McClennan and Spencer charge.
- 2:00:16McClennan feels the ball near the plate.
- 2:00:18He lets it second.
- 2:00:19Joy could not get Jekylltons.
- 2:00:22Throw to Alomar, the second baseman covering first.
- 2:00:25And then the catcher, Stevenson, races down to cover third because McClennan is occupied elsewhere.
- 2:00:31A lot of people move out of box.
- 2:00:33Everybody has a job to do.
- 2:00:35Really, I don't think people really realize the box goes under the name of things that they do on a field and why they do it.
- 2:00:42But everybody has a job to do on a farm.
- 2:00:46So Philip Sopper is going to make a pitching change.
- 2:00:50Bring a left hander in, the pitch begins, but gives, of course, will not pass.
- 2:00:55Jake goes back to the dugout.
- 2:01:01Jake has already gone back in.
- 2:01:02And Philip's just called for a left hander.
- 2:01:07John Murphy comes off the mound.
- 2:01:09No chance to win it.
- 2:01:11He could be a losing pitcher, but you're going to notice this.
- 2:01:14That's what he does.
- 2:01:15He picks this far, give up only five base hits to know that the best you can get out of it is no decision.
- 2:01:20He does get a handshake from somebody as he comes into the dugout.
- 2:01:27And that somebody was predated the first base coach.
- 2:01:30Bang, well done.
- 2:01:51It's going to be Dave LaRoche coming on the pitch.
- 2:01:58Dave LaRoche, a left hander, comes on the pitch and, yes, the Yankee pitch hitter has not come out of the dugout.
- 2:02:03Of course, no.
- 2:02:07Nobody is out there.
- 2:02:08Murphy works standing out on that.
- 2:02:10Gives could come out as soon as Philip's ways to the left hander.
- 2:02:12Gives went back to the dugout.
- 2:02:18Frank is going to be munching.
- 2:02:22Thurmond will bat for a give.
- 2:02:24He can do one or two things. He can pitch to Muntz and try to get him out.
- 2:02:30Or he can put Muntz on first base and set up a force.
- 2:02:34Of course, you're going to pitch to Mercer and White.
- 2:02:38So you're asking to pitch to the Yankees, two big men, if you put Muntz on in this situation.
- 2:02:44So Ralph Hough at this point is holding all the jump starts.
- 2:02:49LaRoche, a left hander, might rather pitch to Mercer than to Muntz.
- 2:02:56We're waiting now for Mike Gaggage to come out.
- 2:02:59Gaggage is in the dugout.
- 2:03:03Look at him.
- 2:03:04Yes, it is.
- 2:03:06LaRoche has done a fine job out of the bullpen.
- 2:03:09He has a record of four and one and eight saves.
- 2:03:15Now the last time we saw this, we were elected to pitch to Alou and Alou got a base hit.
- 2:03:22And that won the ball game and scored Roy White from second base.
- 2:03:29LaRoche has pitched in three games to get the Yankees by the fifth.
- 2:03:37He has a win and a save and this run of years to walk to Evan Muntz and help with Muntz and I.
- 2:03:47LaRoche in three and two third innings has won out only one run, giving us four hits to the Yankees,
- 2:03:54saved nine to six with Randy Mephrensman and Vicki Martin four to three.
- 2:04:03Watch out for the first base, Molly Mercer-Matter with runners in first and second.
- 2:04:25Gaggage is second, one to the first.
- 2:04:30He does not have extreme speed on the base.
- 2:04:36Mr. Mercer, he takes outside and the ball is on.
- 2:04:56LaRoche hides the ball behind his back.
- 2:05:01Now ready to work and dive, fast and low ball two.
- 2:05:06Two balls and no strikes.
- 2:05:13LaRoche slips just about on his stride, sometimes to smooth the dirt out on the thrust slope of the mound.
- 2:05:20The left hander looks in again to John Stevenson for a side.
- 2:05:26Gaggage and Muntz lead away, one out, one to one ball game and to fix the Mercer, Bobby takes the strike.
- 2:05:36The outfield is not extremely deep.
- 2:05:39Even in right field, Rivers has come in.
- 2:05:42Now you know this kid has good speed Rivers.
- 2:05:44He wants to be able to field that base in and right field if it should be a base then and got a throw into the plate.
- 2:05:50So he is not too deep.
- 2:05:51Here's the pitch.
- 2:05:52Mercer is playing, gets a drive on the left.
- 2:05:55Coming in for it is Sully Cowan, he sets a hundred and Cowan makes the guess.
- 2:05:59There are two down.
- 2:06:04Mercer is retired on a drive ball to Cowan and barely shadow that field.
- 2:06:10The batter will be Roy White.
- 2:06:23Right now, source will bat right handed.
- 2:06:27Stevenson wants the second baseman Alomar to join the conference of the mound.
- 2:06:33Alomar comes in and Alomar, Stevenson and LaRoche have a little meeting.
- 2:06:38And they'll soon have a fourth member as Mr. Shylon.
- 2:06:41Amble's out that way.
- 2:06:45John, I bring Stevenson back with it.
- 2:06:47Now Alomar goes back to his position at second base.
- 2:07:01Two out.
- 2:07:02Roy White the batter.
- 2:07:04Roy is 0 for 3.
- 2:07:07And the pitch goes in.
- 2:07:09One on and it is in the air to center field.
- 2:07:12Camping up under it is Ken Berry, waiting for it to come down the side of the retired and do a go to X20.
- 2:07:18For the Yankees in the ninth, no runs on one hit.
- 2:07:22There were no errors and too many left on base.
- 2:07:25So at the end of nine, here are the totals on the ball game.
- 2:07:27The Yankees one run, five hits and three errors.
- 2:07:30California one run, four hits and no errors.
- 2:07:34And Roy White, you got scores of other games?
- 2:07:37Yeah, I got them Frank.
- 2:07:39Oakland beat Boston 9-2.
- 2:07:41The winner is Segui 8-5.
- 2:07:42The loser, Brett 0-2.
- 2:07:44Ken Tatum and George Waitstock got the Boston two runs with home runs.
- 2:07:50Tatum's first shot is 19.
- 2:07:54Kansas City beat Washington 2-0 in the first game with double header.
- 2:07:57And in the second game, Washington leads Kansas City 2-1 at the end of seventh.
- 2:08:03Detroit moved into second place in the American League East as they edged the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3.
- 2:08:09Mickey Lowlish won his 19th ball game with the Aries lost eight.
- 2:08:13Marty Patton, the loser.
- 2:08:15The Tigers have now won 13 of 17.
- 2:08:17The half game ahead of the Boston Reds.
- 2:08:19Alomar will probably have to bring the bat.
- 2:08:23Of course that little fellow's a tough man to double up.
- 2:08:27He can run. He's got 32 stolen bases.
- 2:08:31Kenny still in close third. Outfield straight away.
- 2:08:36Low ball, two strikes on Alomar.
- 2:08:39Reynolds at first base.
- 2:08:41Now Kekett checks Reynolds at first.
- 2:08:430-2 pitch.
- 2:08:45Swung on, popped up.
- 2:08:47First base with Alou.
- 2:08:49Between first and the mound.
- 2:08:51Alou grabs it for the first time.
- 2:08:53One away.
- 2:08:55Reynolds still at first base.
- 2:08:58We'll bring in Mickey Rivers, the right fielder.
- 2:09:04Rivers is one for four. He struck out twice, got a bunt single, and fouled out to the third baseman, Kenny.
- 2:09:10Rivers back left-handed.
- 2:09:18Score is 5-1-1 when it's off to tenth.
- 2:09:22Pitched on a river.
- 2:09:23A shooting ball, a called strike. Just caught the inside for him.
- 2:09:28Alou holds Reynolds at first.
- 2:09:33Fellow's got to be pulling that ball past Alou between Alou and Clark.
- 2:09:36Now the stretch by Kekett. The 0-1 pitch.
- 2:09:39Back ball, cut on a miss.
- 2:09:42Low balls and two strikes.
- 2:09:46Ken McMullin swinging a bat in the on-deck serve.
- 2:09:52Kekett's now ahead 0-2. Looks in at some Muntz.
- 2:09:56Right to sign. Thumbs to the belt.
- 2:09:58Check Reynolds at first. The 0-2 pitch.
- 2:10:00Fast ball, pull on, fouled off. Out of the glove of Muntz.
- 2:10:05Still no balls and two strikes.
- 2:10:20Now Mike's ready.
- 2:10:22The pitch, side on him. First ball, got him.
- 2:10:24Bad ball, way outside in the dirt.
- 2:10:27Rivers waved at it, and Kekett has picked up a big strikeout.
- 2:10:32It's strikeout number five. Thank you, Franklin.
- 2:10:35And that'll bring in Ken McMullin.
- 2:10:39Two outs now. Reynolds still at first base.
- 2:10:46McMullin 0-2. He's bounced out twice to Kenny.
- 2:10:49Sacrified fly that drove in the Angels' only run.
- 2:10:53That was back in the third, and he's walked.
- 2:10:57Kekett is ready. The pitch now.
- 2:10:59Fast ball, bounce forward, shortstop. Baker takes the pickoff.
- 2:11:02This bounce the clock at second base.
- 2:11:04They forced Reynolds there, and Kekett has gotten out of trouble.
- 2:11:09And the Angels come up with no run.
- 2:11:13On no hit. Took one walk, one man left on base.
- 2:11:17So at the end of nine and a half, the New York Yankees won, the California Angels won.
- 2:11:24Here's a message for the cars of America.
- 2:11:27Cars, you may not know it, but to an I-Code dealer, you're people.
- 2:11:31In the past, there was a big difference between the way your owner treated you and the way service stations treated you.
- 2:11:37Your owner treated you like a member of the family.
- 2:11:40Service stations treated you like a machine.
- 2:11:43At home, you were a trusted friend. In the shop, you were a stranger.
- 2:11:47Arco dealers have dedicated themselves to closing this gap.
- 2:11:51They have a service designed to treat you the way your owner treats you.
- 2:11:55Service designed to treat cars like people with Arco Supreme, gasoline that helps you breathe easy,
- 2:12:01and with Arco oils and lubricants to give you the care and protection you need.
- 2:12:06So cars of America, take heart.
- 2:12:08Go to your Arco dealer. You will never be treated like a machine again.
- 2:12:12To your Arco dealer, cars are people.
- 2:12:17...Country Dotson dealer.
- 2:12:21And then...
- 2:12:28That looks like a new picture for the California Angels.
- 2:12:31It's going to be the big right-hander, Lloyd Allen.
- 2:12:34That's the starter child, Murphy, put out with a picture there.
- 2:12:39Lloyd Allen, 6'1", 185 pounds.
- 2:12:47This is his second appearance in this series.
- 2:12:55That is fourth appearance against the Yankees.
- 2:13:01Five innings, he is loud. Three runs, seven hits, walk three, and struck out one against the Yankees.
- 2:13:08That is the one loss record.
- 2:13:19Allen pitched one and two for Zinning.
- 2:13:22The night before that, was credited with a save, as he came out of the eighth inning.
- 2:13:31Gave up one day six, struck out one man.
- 2:13:34Allen now running to work to Ronnie Bloomberg, and it's back to Bill White.
- 2:13:40Hi, Frank Leather, Ronnie Bloomberg's 0 for 3.
- 2:13:44Allen the right-hander.
- 2:13:47First pitch is outside of ball.
- 2:13:54Four sides, 1-1, with the last half of the tenth inning.
- 2:13:58The Yankees won the first game 3-0, as Fritz Peterson won his 12th game.
- 2:14:04Pitched to Bloomberg, head on, the ball in the front.
- 2:14:08Ronnie's trying to get this ballgame over with 1-20.
- 2:14:11Now the Angels have made a change, have left Tommy Reynolds in it, and he's playing right field.
- 2:14:16And they've placed, they've taken off Mickey Rivers, and have put Allen in batting second.
- 2:14:22Pitched to Bloomberg, his line foul in the upper deck, on the left side.
- 2:14:26One and two.
- 2:14:33So Phillips would like to get another at bat for Reynolds, who pinched it for La Roche in the fifth.
- 2:14:40The Angels have the tenth.
- 2:14:42Now Alize, the right-hander deals to Bloomberg.
- 2:14:45Bounce for second base.
- 2:14:46Alomar charges it, takes a hop, throws over to Spencer, and Bloomberg is out.
- 2:14:56All right, here's the loop.
- 2:14:59Felipe Alou is one for two.
- 2:15:01He's scored the Yankees' only run.
- 2:15:04Felipe's also stolen the base.
- 2:15:08He's told second to get himself in the scoring position.
- 2:15:12He's told second to get himself in the scoring position for Clark's single of center.
- 2:15:17That's the Yankees' only run.
- 2:15:20Felipe bounces single of center field in the fifth.
- 2:15:24Mitz is the first pitch, that's over.
- 2:15:27Felipe looks like he's trying to win with a stroke.
- 2:15:30Balls in the strike.
- 2:15:35Going on, nobody on. Murphy looking in to see what's going on.
- 2:15:38Allen with the swings and misses.
- 2:15:41Alou, high fast ball.
- 2:15:44No balls and two strikes on Felipe.
- 2:15:48Murphy was the starter.
- 2:15:50Laroche came off in the ninth.
- 2:15:55Now it's Lloyd Allen. Laroche the left-hander, Allen the right-hander.
- 2:16:00Go-two pitch to Alou.
- 2:16:02Down low, Felipe started to held up just in time.
- 2:16:06One and two.
- 2:16:08McMullen, the third baseman, now is near the line.
- 2:16:12He doesn't want to let a ball get by him on his right.
- 2:16:14He wants to hold Alou to his single.
- 2:16:16So is the first baseman's center.
- 2:16:21Allen's ready, the one-two pitch.
- 2:16:23That ball, cut on, fouled off.
- 2:16:27That's part of Nester Shylock's chest protector.
- 2:16:32Outfield space, Felipe straight away.
- 2:16:37Now Alomar, the second baseman, moves over towards second,
- 2:16:40bringing him to pull.
- 2:16:43One-two pitch.
- 2:16:45Give him the right field, down the line.
- 2:16:47A long wind by Reynolds. Can he get to it?
- 2:16:49One-hands it and just grabs it in fair territory.
- 2:16:53Reynolds went a long way for that ball.
- 2:16:55He's just got to it and got it in the wind.
- 2:16:58Just before crashing into the wall, right down the right field line.
- 2:17:02So Reynolds robs Alou, but leaves the double.
- 2:17:07And they're two outs now.
- 2:17:11Reynolds made a long run and grabbed that ball.
- 2:17:18Go away, here's Horace Farr.
- 2:17:21Also two for three. He's giving him the Yankees' only run.
- 2:17:26Batting left-hander.
- 2:17:28All-striking. Allen with an electric mustard on that one.
- 2:17:31They play all straight away, an all-field.
- 2:17:33Infield also a straight away.
- 2:17:35Infield and outfield.
- 2:17:37No balls and a strike two outs.
- 2:17:41The old one-pitch.
- 2:17:43He's got the ball.
- 2:17:45He's got the ball.
- 2:17:47Two outs.
- 2:17:51The old one-pitch, breaking ball.
- 2:17:53Cut on a miss. No balls and two strikes.
- 2:18:04Allen's ready. Here's the old two-pitch to Clark.
- 2:18:07Misses outside, one and two.
- 2:18:22Here's the one-two-pitch now.
- 2:18:24Line fouled on the left-field line.
- 2:18:28Well, maybe that Leslie Phillips is fortunate he's got that right-handed fielder out there, Reynolds.
- 2:18:33He's got Rivers, although he has better speed.
- 2:18:37He would have had to reach across his body for that ball. Might not have gotten to it.
- 2:18:43One-two-pitch, breaking ball.
- 2:18:45Bucks up.
- 2:18:47McMullen, the third baseman.
- 2:18:49Just a little bit in foul territory.
- 2:18:51He waits on it and he grabs it for the third out.
- 2:18:53So Clark fouls out to the third baseman, McMullen.
- 2:18:56And that's it for the Yankees in the 10th.
- 2:18:58Three up and three down.
- 2:19:01And at the end of 10th, fourth time, Yankees won, the Angels won.

- 2:20:11Well, this next winning ball game now goes to the top half of inning number 10 by Kekich, still on mound for the New York Yankees top half of inning number 11.
- 2:20:21It is, and leading off, Billy Cowan for the California Angels, Bill.
- 2:20:25All right, Frank Messer.
- 2:20:29Cowan is 0 for 4. Kekich is ready. Breaking ball popped up toward center field.
- 2:20:35Mercer's out. Joe Baker, Bobby Eastball for it. Waits on it and grabs it for the first foul.
- 2:20:40Cowan. Way on the first pitch. Guys, the Mercer in center field. Well, they're one out quickly now on the 11th.
- 2:20:48That'll bring in Sid O'Brien, the shortstop. O'Brien came in in the ninth inning to replace Jim Fragosi, a short.
- 2:20:57Fragosi evidently might be having a bit of trouble with that stuff. What? I don't know.
- 2:21:04O'Brien, that's right hand. Takes the breaking ball outside.
- 2:21:09Four side, 1-1. We're in the top of the 11th.
- 2:21:14Kekich is ready. Curve ball cut on a miss.
- 2:21:19The Yankees have one run on five hits that made three errors. California one run on four hits, no errors.
- 2:21:26Fred Peterson won his football game in the opener as he beat the Angels, shot a mouth, 3-0.
- 2:21:33That one pitch now to O'Brien. That ball is fouled off in the upper deck on the right side.
- 2:21:40One ball and two strikes. On deck, the first baseman, Jim Fregosi.
- 2:21:50O'Brien leaves that battle with a play. Kekich, curve ball, just misses Jim Fragosi.
- 2:21:57Close, 2-2. They play O'Brien straight away.
- 2:22:03Kenny, hugging the line at third. Two-two pitches outside of ball, way outside, not close.
- 2:22:09Full count now on O'Brien.
- 2:22:13Dwight is upset with himself for throwing that pitch that far off the strike zone. That wasn't close.
- 2:22:23Now Mike looking at it much. Thurman gives him the sign. Mike likes it.
- 2:22:28Payoff pitch. Breaking ball foul straight back.
- 2:22:32Still three and two.
- 2:22:35The Yankees have a little third. Bark at second. Baker at shortstop. Kenny at third.
- 2:22:39Yostfield, Dwight, Mercer, and Bloomberg reading from left to right. The catcher, Thurman Munch.
- 2:22:46Kekich is ready with the 3-2 pitch.
- 2:22:48The ball bounced right back to Mike. Mike snaps it over the first base and they're two outs.
- 2:23:00And here's Spencer.
- 2:23:04Spencer's over three. He's walked, fly to right, fouled out of the first base, and a little humpback will enter the court.
- 2:23:13And here's it, even though he's left-handed, batting against the left-handed pitching Kekich.
- 2:23:19Sidearm curveball is outside. Kenny Berry on the fourth side, 1-1, at the top of the 11th.
- 2:23:27Not much hitting. Only nine hits to go the ball game. Curveball down low. Two balls in those cracks.
- 2:23:35The Yankees have five hits. The Angels four.
- 2:23:42Each team has a run.
- 2:23:45They picked up their run in the second. When a loose walk, stole a second or two out to the single end by Horace Clark.
- 2:23:52Curveball cut on a miss. Two and one.
- 2:23:57The Angels came back in the third and picked up the run.
- 2:24:04The Yankees played a little loose baseball there. They made three errors in that third inning.
- 2:24:08We're lucky to get out only giving up one run. This boy's tied 1-1.
- 2:24:12The Yankees ready. Over the head. Two-one pitch. Almost hit him inside a breaking ball. Three and one.
- 2:24:19Mike has fished well. Last time out, he lost. Two inches in early, but he only gave up two hits.
- 2:24:29Now he's giving up four. Curveball misses inside ball four and Spencer walks.
- 2:24:39So Jim Spencer jogs on down the first base.
- 2:24:43And that's the fifth walk given up by Keggis. That'll bring in Kenny Berry, the center fielder.
- 2:24:49Let's see. Spencer, the guy at first, has no stolen bases.
- 2:24:55So you might not have to watch him too closely. But Lou holds him at first, though.
- 2:25:01Berry is two for four.
- 2:25:08Keggis checks Spencer. He doesn't have a lead at all at first.
- 2:25:11Pitch to Berry's bounce to shortstop. Baker loves it. Over to Clark. They force Spencer at second base.
- 2:25:18And that's it for the Angels. Keggis holds them off once more.
- 2:25:23Four California in the 11th. No runs, no hits. There was one walk and a man left on.
- 2:25:31So at the end of ten and a half, New York Yankees won the California Angels one.
- 2:25:38The village blacksmith was one of the men who built America.
- 2:25:53He shot many a horse, forged many a plow, and built many a mighty thirst.
- 2:25:58A more than one beer thirst. The kind of thirst that took more than one cold beer to satisfy.
- 2:26:05And that's where Schaeffer came in. We built a beer for the men who built America.
- 2:26:11We started practicing on more than one beer thirst back before most brewers even started brewing.
- 2:26:17And practice makes perfect.
- 2:26:21Today Schaeffer has the unmatched quality of flavor that never fades.
- 2:26:26Schaeffer is made for the more than one beer man. Always has been, always will be.
- 2:26:31Schaeffer gives a one beer to have when you're having more than one.
- 2:26:42Well Danny Keeter, right hand batter's going to come out and swing for Frank Baker.
- 2:26:47Against the right hander, Lloyd Allen, near the bottom half of the 11th inning.
- 2:26:53Yankees show a better record at over trying games than to the California Angels.
- 2:26:57The Angels in that sprinting have won six, lost eight.
- 2:27:02The New York Yankees in that sprinting have won eight and lost five.
- 2:27:05Right now Danny Keeter will try to get himself on and see what happens here in the bottom half of the 11th.
- 2:27:10Hi Frank Mender. Keeter overall batting 262.
- 2:27:14As a pen-kitter he's batting 333, two for six, he has a couple of RBI.
- 2:27:19He's then facing Lloyd Allen, the big right hander for the Angels.
- 2:27:26And Allen gets the first pitch in a ball strike.
- 2:27:30And Gene Michaels in the on deck serve.
- 2:27:34That looks like that might be all for Checkage.
- 2:27:37How feels he's gone far enough?
- 2:27:41The old one pitched down on Keeter. Line foul.
- 2:27:45Jack Acker is staying loose out of the Yankee bulls. He was warming up and now staying loose out there.
- 2:27:54The first Keeter is a fine runner in case Keeter can get on here.
- 2:28:00It wouldn't take anything for Mike to leave that dugout, walk past Michael and sacrifice.
- 2:28:08The pitch down to Keeter, up the middle.
- 2:28:10Bumboed by the pitch Allen but it's all he probably picks it up and gets Keeter at first.
- 2:28:17And Michael will now, he'll hit, he'll hit for Keeter.
- 2:28:23He's been playing his pitch fine baseball. He's only given up one run on four hits.
- 2:28:37Michael is one for fours this minute, Gene.
- 2:28:40That's the 250. Ricky Zeta RBI.
- 2:28:43He's got left handed against Allen. Four sides, one-one.
- 2:28:46We're in the last of the 11th.
- 2:28:49Allen deals the first pitch.
- 2:28:51Come on, hits to a left fielder on the line.
- 2:28:53Allen's after it. Can he get to it? No!
- 2:28:55And that's, and it's a fair ball.
- 2:28:57If your ground rule's double, that ball hits.
- 2:29:00Under Allen's belt, bounce into the left field stand.
- 2:29:04So Michael on his second base with a ground rule double.
- 2:29:08And the Yankees have quite a bit of life here.
- 2:29:10This four side, one-one.
- 2:29:12When he runs his second base, Gene Michael comes through.
- 2:29:18So Michael now two for five is a pitch hitter. That's 400.
- 2:29:24So the winning run at second base.
- 2:29:28And Jerry Kenny's a hitter. They're going to walk him.
- 2:29:32They're going to pitch two months.
- 2:29:35That's the first extra base hit in the ball game for either 12 or 13.
- 2:29:53They're walking Kenny. That's ball three.
- 2:29:57There's one out. Michael is second.
- 2:29:59It's four side, one-one. The Yankees now have six hits.
- 2:30:02The Yankees trying to win two here.
- 2:30:04They won the first game three-nothing behind Rich Peterson.
- 2:30:09And Kenny now dogs on down the first base.
- 2:30:13And Johnny Stevenson reminds Mr. Allen that there's one out.
- 2:30:18That Gene Michael's a second. Kenny's a first.
- 2:30:22And Munson's a hitter.
- 2:30:24Thurman got under this ball game back in the ninth when he sent hits for Jake Gibbs.
- 2:30:31He was checking on it a second. And Munson was intentionally fast.
- 2:30:38Ursa fly to left and White fly to center to end that.
- 2:30:41The Yankees would have got a run there. We wouldn't have been here.
- 2:30:44But we're here. The four is tied, one-one.
- 2:30:50Munson with the open stand.
- 2:30:52First pitch to him. Breaking ball cut off.
- 2:30:55And that ball got fast, Stevenson.
- 2:30:59And Kenny, evidently, I mean Michael and Kenny, evidently thought the ball was fouled off.
- 2:31:04It was not fouled off.
- 2:31:06It got about ten yards past Stevenson toward the Yankee dugout.
- 2:31:09He jumped on it quickly and held Michael at second base.
- 2:31:14No balls and one strike on Munson.
- 2:31:19Michael leads in second. Kenny from first.
- 2:31:22Gene takes a bigger lead this second. Takes another step off.
- 2:31:27Alan still looking at his catch.
- 2:31:29And Stevenson, Michael with a big lead at second.
- 2:31:31He's checked out. Alomar, we'll try to get him.
- 2:31:34Alan backs off with Alomar.
- 2:31:36Who was in the second base behind Michael.
- 2:31:41He's got back already.
- 2:31:44Now Alan looks at.
- 2:31:48Gene with a big lead at second.
- 2:31:50No one pitched to Munson.
- 2:31:51Bounce for a shortstop.
- 2:31:53He ties up with it. Holds it second for one. Throw the first.
- 2:31:57Munson beats the relay.
- 2:32:02So Michael moves to third base.
- 2:32:07Munson's on it first. And here comes Leslie Phillips.
- 2:32:10They're two outs. The batter's Bobby Mercer.
- 2:32:14Leslie may want to left hander to come in here and pitch to Mercer. I don't know.
- 2:32:17We'll see it just a second.
- 2:32:19He's going to walk Mercer. Loads of bases up. Although Munson's at first.
- 2:32:24Let's see what Leslie does here.
- 2:32:26Anyway.
- 2:32:29Michael is the second.
- 2:32:33Munson's at first.
- 2:32:35And this is the New York Yankee baseball network. Let's pause for station identification.
- 2:32:45This is WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station, Schenectady, New York.
- 2:32:57Well, let's see now. Now Nester Shallock stopped talking to Leslie Phillips.
- 2:33:01He wants to get some action here.
- 2:33:03And they've gone. They've left. Phillips is going to go back to the deck out.
- 2:33:08Stevens comes back behind the plate.
- 2:33:10They're two outs. Michael's at third. Munson's at first.
- 2:33:15Four side, 1-1. We're in the 11th.
- 2:33:18They're going to pitch to Mercer.
- 2:33:30The
- 2:33:30Babbies 1 for 4. First pitch is a called strike.
- 2:33:42No balls and strike. Two outs.
- 2:33:46Lloyd Allen on the right hand. Ball game on the bases.
- 2:33:52First pitch, breaking ball, bounce power on the first baseline. No balls and two strikes.
- 2:34:04Spencer, the first baseman, is allowing Munson all the room he wants.
- 2:34:08He's playing all the way back there to the grass.
- 2:34:11Michael's at third. Munson's at first.
- 2:34:14Now Allen looks good and backs off.
- 2:34:20Now the stretch. The 0-2 pitch.
- 2:34:23Line drive. Let's see if we can get a face hit.
- 2:34:26The Yankees win the ball game. Munson tags second.
- 2:34:30Michael strikes the plate and that's it.
- 2:34:33The Yankees win 2-1. How about that?
- 2:34:38Leslie Phillips chose to pitch to Bobby Mercer.
- 2:34:42And Mercer aligned the 0-2 pitch in the left center field and the Yankees win two ball games.
- 2:34:50So to recap, this inning, first of all, Danny Cater batted for Baker and he bounced that pitch to the first.
- 2:35:04Gene Michael batted for Kekett.
- 2:35:06And he lined the ball down the left field line and hit and bounced into the seats out of reach of Billy Cowan for ground rule double.
- 2:35:14Jerry Kenny was intensely watched.
- 2:35:17Munson forced Kenny at second and with runners on first and third, Leslie Phillips elected to pitch to Bobby Mercer.
- 2:35:26Mercer hits the 0-2 pitch down the left center field for the Yankees winning run as Michael touched the plate and the Yankees win it.
- 2:35:352-1.
- 2:35:38And Frank, how about we go over here and release Phil? You want to give the recap?
- 2:35:43Okay, sure. Well, let's look at the total, buddy, right now.
- 2:35:47For the Yankees, two runs, seven hits, three hours.
- 2:35:49And California, one run, four hits and no hours.
- 2:35:52Mike Kekett gets to win. His record is seven and six.
- 2:35:55And the Yankees go two games over 500 for the first time this year. They have now won 60 and lost 58.
- 2:36:02The losing pitcher is Lloyd Allen. His record is four and four.
- 2:36:06The Yankees won the first game three to nothing behind Fred Peterson.
- 2:36:10So the Blue Yankee left-handers pitch the victories. Peterson with a shutout in the first game.
- 2:36:18And Kekett gave up five hits less than Peterson and had to take a 2-1 extra inning victory.
- 2:36:25Loggis Kekett has gone in a ball game this year.
- 2:36:30Well, the Yankees now have some momentum going.
- 2:36:33So do the Oakland A's coming in for the weekend three-game series tomorrow night, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
- 2:36:40Should be interesting and exciting out here at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:36:43You've been putting off going to a ball game this year.
- 2:36:47Certainly think that now might be an excellent time to change your mind and get out and see one.
- 2:36:52The action should be thick and heavy here at Yankee Stadium over the weekend.
- 2:36:57Saturday night, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
- 2:37:01Well, that's it. The Yankees create the twin bill from the California Angels and extend their record to 60 wins, 58 losses.
- 2:37:09The California Angels go out of New York for the last time this year with a record of 55 wins and 64 defeats.
