Latest / Unlocking The Paradigm Portal / Be Real, Not Nice: What Were You Actually Working Out?
Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome back to Unlocking the Paradigm Portal.
- 0:03My name is Sarah. So it's been a week of a really
- 0:08hard, challenging look at relationships and to have to
- 0:14really take a big deep dive into yourself.
- 0:17And I know that's not easy. I know that very well because I
- 0:21have been on my own deep dive all week and hell for about a
- 0:24decade now. But I promise you, it is so
- 0:28worth it. So I'm just going to jump right
- 0:31in. You knew something was off.
- 0:34Maybe not everything, maybe not the full picture, but something
- 0:38was off. And you felt it before you had
- 0:41words for it. And there was a shift in your
- 0:44body and there was this quiet that came over you in a
- 0:48particular moment. And that thing that you noticed
- 0:52and then immediately talked yourself out of noticing.
- 0:55You felt it. And you stayed anyway.
- 0:58And I'm not here to tell you that was wrong.
- 1:00People deserve chances to change, absolutely.
- 1:05And relationships deserve real effort.
- 1:07And staying and doing the hard work is sometimes the most
- 1:10courageous thing a person can do.
- 1:13And some of the best things that have ever happened in a
- 1:15relationship happened because one or both people decided to
- 1:18stay and look at what was actually going on instead of
- 1:22walking out the door. And that's beautiful.
- 1:25So this is not a stay or go conversation that is yours to
- 1:29have. That has always been yours.
- 1:31This is a different conversation and it's the one this whole week
- 1:34has been quietly building toward.
- 1:36What were you actually working out inside of that relationship?
- 1:42Not what the other person was doing, not what went wrong
- 1:45between you, but what were you just you working out inside of
- 1:50yourself, using the container of that relationship to do it?
- 1:55Because if you don't answer that question honestly, if you don't
- 1:59look at what was happening inside of you and not just what
- 2:02was happening between you, you will find yourself in a
- 2:06different relationship, having the exact same experience,
- 2:10different person, same dynamic, same wound, same moment where
- 2:15you go quiet and still and something in you already knows.
- 2:20I'm going to link the Murder Board episode from Sunday.
- 2:23That was the reason I did it, repetitive patterns, and you
- 2:27have to see it so that you can break that.
- 2:30And that's what the whole week has been about.
- 2:32It's not about building a case or collecting evidence against
- 2:35anyone else. And then it's not about proving
- 2:38that you were right about them. It's about you.
- 2:41The work is always about you. So we're going to do a little
- 2:47flashback to the week Monday. We started with the common
- 2:50denominator, and I know that one landed hard for some of you.
- 2:54Because the common denominator is you.
- 2:56It's always you. Not as a verdict and not with
- 3:00judgement. It's a starting point.
- 3:02You are the 1 consistent variable in every relationship
- 3:05you have ever been in, which means you are also the one
- 3:09variable with the most potential for actual change.
- 3:12That's good news. And Wednesday I went after the
- 3:16red flags, the ones you saw clearly and chose not to see.
- 3:19And I want to say something about that before I go any
- 3:22further today. Choosing not to see something is
- 3:25not stupidity and it is not weakness.
- 3:28It is very human, very understandable, and a response
- 3:32to information that feels too costly to act upon.
- 3:36I mean, your brain is wired to protect you from a threat, and
- 3:38sometimes the biggest perceived threat isn't the red flag, It's
- 3:42what seeing the red flag clearly and acknowledging it would
- 3:46require you to do about it. So today I'm going to go one
- 3:51layer deeper than both of those because this is what I do.
- 3:55Because even if you saw the flags, even if you recognize the
- 3:58pattern, even if you can name the common denominator clearly,
- 4:02there is still a question underneath all of it that most
- 4:05people never really get down to. And not just what happened, but
- 4:10what were you trying to heal, prove, or resolve through it?
- 4:16So in my experience, and I mean that both personally and
- 4:19professionally, when someone knows something is off and stays
- 4:22anyway, when someone keeps choosing A dynamic that isn't
- 4:26working, it comes down to one of three things, sometimes two of
- 4:31them, sometimes all three at once.
- 4:35Worth, fear and identity. So we're going to start with
- 4:40worth. Worth sounds like this inside of
- 4:42your head. Maybe if I just show up harder.
- 4:45Maybe if I love better, Maybe if I give more.
- 4:48Maybe if I need less, maybe they'll finally see me.
- 4:51Maybe they'll finally appreciate me.
- 4:54Maybe if I can get it right, if I can hit whatever the moving
- 4:58target is of their, you know, emotional volatility this week,
- 5:04they'll choose me. They'll stay.
- 5:06They'll finally reflect back to me the thing I've been trying to
- 5:10see in myself through them. Maybe they will finally love me.
- 5:15And so you keep trying, and you keep adjusting, and you keep
- 5:18shrinking or expanding or contorting into a pretzel to fit
- 5:23what you think is being asked of you.
- 5:25And it's not because you aren't worth being chosen as you are,
- 5:28because you are, but because some part of you, a part that
- 5:33was shaped long before this relationship in rooms that had
- 5:36nothing to do with this person, isn't fully convinced of that
- 5:39yet. And you're trying to use this
- 5:41relationship to settle the question, to finally get that
- 5:44external proof that you are enough.
- 5:47The problem is that no relationship can settle that
- 5:51question for you. The evidence has to come from
- 5:54inside, and every time you look for it outside of yourself, you
- 5:59hand someone else your power. And most people are too busy
- 6:05with their own stuff to be trusted with your power.
- 6:08And frankly, your power is yours, Don't give it away.
- 6:13So if worth is your thing, and be really honest with yourself
- 6:16about this. The work isn't about finding a
- 6:19better relationship. The work is about building a
- 6:21better relationship with yourself first so that you stop
- 6:25auditing other people for proof of your own value.
- 6:29So the second thing is fear. And fear is sneakier than worth
- 6:32because it disguises itself as logic.
- 6:35So fear sounds like, What if I'm wrong about this?
- 6:38What if things can actually change?
- 6:40I've seen glimpses of who they could be.
- 6:44And what if I leave right before it gets better?
- 6:48What if I'm being too sensitive, too demanding, too quick to pull
- 6:52the plug on something that just needs more time?
- 6:55And underneath all of that is what if I'm alone?
- 7:00What if this is as good as it gets for me?
- 7:03What if the next thing is worse? So you stay in the familiar
- 7:08discomfort because the unknown is more threatening than the
- 7:11known. And at least here you know the
- 7:15shape of things. It's like you're uncomfortable
- 7:19comfort zone. And at least here you know what
- 7:23you're managing. You know who you're managing.
- 7:26Your nervous system is smart, protective, completely
- 7:29well-intentioned, and spectacularly unhelpful in this
- 7:33particular situation because it keeps choosing the devil it
- 7:37knows. And the problem with staying
- 7:41because of fear is that it compounds over time.
- 7:44So every time you override your own knowing to stay comfortable,
- 7:49you erode your trust in yourself a little bit more, and you teach
- 7:53yourself that your instincts can't be relied on and that your
- 7:56body is an unreliable narrator. And rebuilding that trust, like
- 8:01trust in your own perception, your own knowing, your own rate
- 8:04of the situation, that is real work.
- 8:06It's important work. And it starts with admitting
- 8:09that fear has been driving more than you've been willing to
- 8:11admit. So the third part is identity.
- 8:15And identity is the one that hides behind your best
- 8:18qualities. So identity sounds like I'm not
- 8:20someone who gives up. I made a commitment, and
- 8:23commitments mean something to me.
- 8:26Good people do the work. I don't want to be someone who
- 8:29runs when things get hard. If I give up, then I'm failing.
- 8:34And those are real values. Loyalty does matter.
- 8:37Commitment matters. Doing the work instead of
- 8:40running from discomfort. That matters.
- 8:43I'm not arguing against any of that.
- 8:45There is a big difference between staying because you're
- 8:48genuinely invested in growth, whether it's yours, theirs,
- 8:51yours together, and staying because leaving would threaten
- 8:54the story you tell about who you are.
- 8:58There's a difference between loyalty as a value and loyalty
- 9:02as a cage you built out of your own values.
- 9:05And if the honest answer is that you've been staying to protect
- 9:08an identity more than to build a relationship, that is worth
- 9:11looking at. Not with shame, but with
- 9:13curiosity. Because the identity you've been
- 9:16protecting was probably constructed to keep you safe
- 9:19from something, and it's worth knowing what that something is.
- 9:24So here's what I know about patterns after years of doing
- 9:27this work on myself and with other people.
- 9:30You cannot think your way out of a pattern.
- 9:33You cannot willpower past it. You cannot find the right person
- 9:38and hope it dissolves on contact with someone.
- 9:40Healthier patterns don't care how smart you are.
- 9:44They don't care how much therapy you've done, or how many books
- 9:48you've read, or how clearly you can articulate exactly what your
- 9:52attachment style is doing and why.
- 9:55People love to throw around attachment language without
- 9:58actually putting in the work to change it.
- 10:02Patterns. They live in the body.
- 10:04They run below the level of intellectual understanding and
- 10:07the only thing that actually shifts them is getting honest.
- 10:10Not just analytically honest, but felt honest about what they
- 10:14are protecting. Every pattern is doing something
- 10:19for you, even the painful ones. In fact, it's specially the
- 10:22painful ones. They are keeping something at
- 10:25Bay. They're reaching for something
- 10:27they learned to reach for long, long ago, usually before you had
- 10:33any say in the matter. And the moment that you can see
- 10:36that, and I mean really see it and feel it and stop making it
- 10:40mean something terrible about you, something starts to loosen.
- 10:45This is exactly what the murder board this week was designed to
- 10:49do. You built the case.
- 10:51You laid out the evidence. You look at the pattern clearly
- 10:54and honestly because you cannot do the internal work without
- 10:58first seeing the external picture with clear eyes.
- 11:02The murder board wasn't the destination, it was the door.
- 11:05And let me tell you, it has been a powerful week of seeing and
- 11:11acknowledging and breaking the hell out of patterns across
- 11:16every kind of relationship I've ever had.
- 11:19Family, friends, relationship like romantic relationships, all
- 11:22of it. Because being able to see it
- 11:25with clear eyes from that observer stance completely
- 11:29changes everything. Because once you can see that
- 11:32pattern clearly, once you've named what kept showing up, what
- 11:37you kept tolerating, what you kept explaining away, then you
- 11:42get to ask the harder question. Not just what did they do, but
- 11:47you get to ask what did I bring into the room?
- 11:51And what I brought into the room is the only part of this I have
- 11:55any actual power over. People can change.
- 12:00I truly believe that they genuinely, genuinely can, and so
- 12:06can you, but only what you're willing to look at.
- 12:10People can change if they're willing to put in the work.
- 12:14You can change if you're willing to put in the work.
- 12:18And it's not easy. I'm not going to lie, it has
- 12:21been the most challenging thing I've done in my entire existence
- 12:25and 1,000,000% worth it. And let me also say this, it is
- 12:31an ongoing process constantly. It's not as intense anymore
- 12:36after the first little bit, but everyone who knows me knows that
- 12:40I will. Something will come up and I'll
- 12:43be like, man, I got kicked in the teeth with that.
- 12:45OK. But the cool thing is once you
- 12:48start doing it, then you're able to pause and sit with it and
- 12:52process it instead of being bowled over.
- 12:56So to close out this episode, your stone, the one stone for
- 13:03this week, you're stoned for today, and to close this final
- 13:07episode of Friday, is this. Pick one relationship, past or
- 13:12present, where you felt something was off and you stayed
- 13:17anyway. Don't analyze it.
- 13:20Don't build a case. Just sit with this question.
- 13:23Honestly, what was I working out?
- 13:29Get real and ask yourself that. What were you working out?
- 13:34And then ask yourself, was it worth?
- 13:37What was I was? Was it worth like?
- 13:39Was I trying to earn proof that I was enough, that I was worthy
- 13:44enough? Was it fear?
- 13:47Was it the unknown that was more threatening than the known pain?
- 13:52Was it identity? Was I staying to protect story
- 13:56about who I am? Was it all three?
- 14:00Was it worthiness and fear and identity?
- 14:04It can be all wrapped up and tangled.
- 14:08So write one sentence. Not a justified sentence, not an
- 14:12explained sentence, just an honest sentence.
- 14:16And that sentence is not a verdict on you or on them.
- 14:19It's a flashlight. And flashlights, they don't
- 14:23judge what they're illuminating, they just light it up.
- 14:25They just make it possible to finally see because the pattern
- 14:30only changes when you can see it clearly enough to make a
- 14:33different choice, not just in that relationship, but in the
- 14:37next one and the one after that. And that's the real work.
- 14:42That's always been the real work.
- 14:46So you showed up all three days this week and you sat with hard
- 14:50questions on hard mornings. And that is that says so much
- 14:55about you. That is actually the beginning
- 14:58of something awesome. So remember, it was never just
- 15:02about them, it was always about you.
- 15:05And I know that's harder to hear than a clean villain story, but
- 15:08it's also the most hopeful thing that I know.
- 15:11Because you are the 1 variable in every relationship you have
- 15:15ever had, or will ever have for that matter, that you can
- 15:20actually do something about. And you are not broken, you are
- 15:24not the problem. You are a person who has been
- 15:28working something out and now you get to do that with your
- 15:31eyes open. Welcome to actually living.
- 15:38So I'm going to wrap it up for today.
- 15:40Like share, subscribe, do all the things and try to enjoy your
- 15:45Friday the 13th. Spooky, right?
- 15:49Doesn't faze me. So leave a comment if you would
- 15:53like to share your stone or anything, any patterns that
- 15:56you've recognized. And I will be back Saturday for
- 15:59light in the dark, Sunday for another deep dive.
- 16:01And then I'm going to hammer you a little bit less next week
- 16:04because I know this week was kind of aggressive.
- 16:07So have a beautiful Friday.
