- 0:26Hello everyone and welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast. I am Nicole here with my fellow junkie.
- 0:33-Shauna. -And so we know that we usually go over and celebrate good movies, good things that we're watching and stuff,
- 0:40but today we're actually going to do a little 180 and talk about one of the worst movies that we have probably seen,
- 0:48that we actually just seen together and it was my first time seeing this movie so it was a great experience,
- 0:54which I'll get into, but Shana and I recently seen the room with Greg Sestero and it was created and directed by Tommy Wiseau.
- 1:03This was my third time seeing The Room. I don't know why there's no reason to see this movie three times.
- 1:11The first time I watched it with my husband because it was known as the worst movie of all time.
- 1:17Obviously, if something has that title, you have to watch it. Then the second time I saw it was at a showing with Greg Sistero there.
- 1:26He's one of the actors in the film and it was for Pop Culture Junkie and I got to interview Greg Sestero.
- 1:33Anybody listening, go back and listen to my interview with him. It was really good.
- 1:37I was really excited that you got to go this time, Nicole, and experience the room.
- 1:42It's very different from any other movie that you would go see in the theater, for sure.
- 1:48Going into it, so I told you this movie is going to be terrible.
- 1:52That's kind of the gist of it. Greg Sestero leans into knowing that it's a bad movie.
- 1:58And you leaned over and asks me, he knows this is going to be bad, right?
- 2:01It's like, yes.
- 2:02Yes, he knows it's going to be bad.
- 2:05He doesn't go into this thinking, they're all going to love this.
- 2:09But was it as bad as you thought it was going to be?
- 2:12I don't think so. I think again, the experience of being in the theater made it better than what I was
- 2:20expecting. I think if being in the movie theater with others, if I was alone watching it at home,
- 2:27I didn't have that experience, I would have been definitely worse. But I think the experience just
- 2:31made it good for me. Honestly, like the people surrounding us, the whole environment, it was just
- 2:36so fun. And I was laughing the entire time. So I definitely think being in the theater with the
- 2:40others who actually knew what was going on made it a lot more better for me than I was expecting.
- 2:46Yeah, it's definitely one of those movies where people know the lines. They have little chance
- 2:52that they go in with. And we all three plastic spoons across the room with a couple hitting a
- 2:57cold in the heads. That was awesome. Yeah, shout out to majestic theater in Arizona. This one was the
- 3:06Gilbert location. So the junkies go there a lot and we love it there. But yeah, it's definitely
- 3:12cool to see everybody chanting and knowing everything. And what was your, gosh, I don't know favorite is
- 3:20the right word here. But what was your favorite part of the movie? I'm trying to think, I think it was
- 3:29when Mark and Johnny were playing football and all your best friends, best friends. I love that part.
- 3:37And I also liked the ending. Well, I guess it wasn't in the movie, but it was someone saying it out loud,
- 3:42I think the very end spoiler alert for the movie. It was for the room. When Johnny dies and someone was
- 3:51like, Oh, who's going to pay your college tuition now? I died. I thought that was hilarious. Who's going to pay
- 3:59Dini's tuition? Oh, my god. Dini is the most, he's the most nonsensical character. He's this like
- 4:07how old is he supposed to be? In some clips, he's a teenager and he's like, I just like to watch you
- 4:13and he like follows them into their bedroom. And it's like, oh, Johnny's like a father to him. And I'm
- 4:19like, isn't this man like 25 years old? I know. I'm like, maybe 18 or 19. I don't know. I guess and
- 4:25he's going to college and then he's dealing drugs or bot drugs or something. What money, Dini? What money?
- 4:37Oh my god. And he gets held at gunpoint. And then it never impacts the movie for the rest of the movie.
- 4:45There's so many parts like that. Like the mom has cancer. And then it's so unnecessary. It never comes
- 4:53up again. It's for sure. I definitely have cancer. And then just the daughter's like, oh, you stupid bitch.
- 5:01You'll be all right. What? Oh my gosh. Oh my god. What did you feel about the four very extended sex scenes?
- 5:10Oh, wow. I felt bad for the actors. It was a lot to watch. Like I'm not a prudent or anything like that.
- 5:19But oh gosh, it was difficult. I felt really, really bad for the actors. But it was one part. I don't know
- 5:26if you mentioned it or someone else. They use the same scene twice. Yeah. Like so it's with Johnny and Lisa
- 5:34have sex two times. And she's definitely wearing the same eye shadow and the same earrings. And they're
- 5:42using the roses again to like touch each other in four places. Like do they just do this every time
- 5:47they have sex? She puts on her sex eye shadow and then they just rub the roses against each other.
- 5:53Oh my god. And then when her and Mark has sex for the first time, I guess they had sex. He doesn't
- 5:59even take his pants off and they're just on the staircase to dry-humping. Oh man. Greg told me in
- 6:07our interview together that they had to redub his like moans and stuff after the fact, after they
- 6:13felt met scene. So that's why it's just so cringy. You can just hear him like, oh,
- 6:20Lisa. Yeah. Because it's all just dubbed in. Oh god. So speaking of Greg, he was at the
- 6:28showing. It was the 20th anniversary of the room. So that was why everything was happening. And Greg
- 6:32is, I believe he's going around the country from what his Instagram looks like and just going
- 6:37to different movie theaters and going to the viewings of the room and kind of do in meat and greets
- 6:43and stuff like that. So at the very beginning when I walked into the theater, he was there. And you
- 6:48introduced us and he was talking about the room. And obviously I didn't know at the time that he knew
- 6:54it was a bad movie. So when he was talking to me about it, I was like, oh no, I'm so excited. Like,
- 6:59it's so good. But like I said, I want to insult him or his work, you know. And then that's when I
- 7:04realized I was like, does he know it's a bad movie? And you were like, yeah, I'm like, okay, good, good.
- 7:08But it was a really nice guy. I think it's really cool what he's doing going around and kind of
- 7:15doing meat and greets and stuff like that. I think it's cool once you get to meet people actors and the
- 7:19movies and get their experience and what they did and how they went about everything. Yeah. But yeah,
- 7:25some of his stories about everything is just really funny from his point of view.
- 7:30Yeah, he seems like a really cool guy for like the chances that I've gotten to talk to him. And he
- 7:36directs films now. And he's an author. He wrote a book called The Disaster Artist based on his
- 7:43experiences filming the room. And you definitely need to watch it Nicole. It's so good. James Franco
- 7:50stars his Tommy and then Dave Franco is Greg and Seth Rogan's in it. And it's just this hilarious
- 7:58behind the scenes look of just the chaos and ridiculousness of that movie and how much money
- 8:05Tommy Wiseau just pumped into this production for really unnecessary things. Like you mentioned,
- 8:10there was a rooftop that was available to film on. But Tommy demanded using like a green screen
- 8:16in the South Stage for the rooftop. But yeah, I definitely would suggest you know checking out the
- 8:22disaster artist whether you read it the book, you know, read the book, watch the movie. It's
- 8:26good stuff there. But yeah, I'm glad that you saw it with me Nicole. I think it was a lot of fun.
- 8:32It was. It was a lot of fun. Again, the experience of just the audience and the rest of the theater
- 8:38made it worthwhile for me, I think. So speaking of bad movies and movies that have a following like
- 8:45the room, there's obviously a lot of other cult movies that have a cult following that has the
- 8:51same kind of scenario as the room. Do any come to mind for you that just they're just terrible, but
- 8:59I've seen them and you just continue to see them because of the following that it has? Yeah, so
- 9:05I don't know if I would consider it terrible, but I when I think of cult movies or movies with
- 9:11cult followings, it's going to be the Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's over the top and it has this
- 9:18huge passionate following behind it. Tim Curry plays a sweet transvestite from transsexual transylvania.
- 9:28Not sure if you can say any of those words anymore, but that's a client line from the movie.
- 9:34But it's I remember the first time I went was in college with my girlfriends and we dressed up
- 9:40in like golf clothes and leather, which is just kind of how I dress now. But we went to a midnight
- 9:48showing and you watch this movie on the screen and then in front of it, there's people acting out
- 9:55or like mouthing along with the scenes and you throw props at each other. There's people saying the lines.
- 10:03If it's your first Rocky Horror Showing, then they'll do a virgin sacrifice and so they bring you up
- 10:09into the front and they'll just make you dance. Sometimes they'll make you take your pants off. I mean,
- 10:16it's just it's ridiculous. But I love that environment. Like I remember it just being really just
- 10:23fabulously gay. It was just a bunch of just films and gay people and just kind of quote, you know,
- 10:30outcast folks and we all just had an amazing time and it was my first time up there. So we did the
- 10:36Virgin SacriPies and they sprayed like whipped cream in our mouths. And then we watched this
- 10:41ridiculously fabulous movie. Yeah, I haven't gone since. So I think if you and I can never go to a
- 10:47a Rocky Horror Show, and you would really like it Nicole. I would love to. That sounds incredible.
- 10:52I would love whipped cream in my mouth. It was awesome. It was in Timpy, Arizona, some little local theater.
- 11:00I don't remember. I don't even know if it's open anymore. But I bet you anything majestic has
- 11:05showings of Rocky Horror Pictures show like that. A lot of them happen around October, like Halloween time.
- 11:11But gosh, there are so many movies with cult followings. Not necessarily, you know, bad movies. Like a
- 11:18lot of these are amazing. But the evil dead, you know, refer madness, night of the living dead. 2001
- 11:28space Odyssey, like a lot of people are just really passionate about these movies. I love the evil dead
- 11:34films. I guess that kind of comes to mind too, is like cult following. They definitely know what they
- 11:41are and they lean into the camp, which I love. There's a time in my life where I didn't like scary
- 11:47movies, which is so funny to me because I love them now. And I remember when I was dating my husband,
- 11:53he wanted to watch the first evil dead movie. And I was like, I don't know. It sounds like it's
- 11:56going to be scary in his, but it's not. It is absolutely not scary. It's like this movie's ridiculous.
- 12:04It's amazing. You're going to love it. Yeah, and I did. It's absolutely incredible. So
- 12:09if you think about like bad movies, I don't know. Some of the bad movies that I like don't really
- 12:15have a cult following, but I want to hear what bad movies you like, Nicole. I don't know. I'm trying
- 12:23to think of bad movies that I'd like, but I know one that pops in my head immediately when
- 12:28anyone asks me like, what's the worst movie I've ever seen? And it's very unfortunate because
- 12:34this person is my favorite actor. It's Adam Sandler. And I think the worst movie that I've ever seen
- 12:41was his movie, Jack and Jill. Oh, he makes terrible movies now. I mean, it was beyond like uncut gyms.
- 12:47Oh, he had a string of just fucking terrible movies. Yeah. And Jack and Jill, he plays both Jack and
- 12:56he also plays Jill. And I was interested because I knew we were going to be talking about this topic.
- 13:02So I went on Rotten Tomatoes and the tomato meat or tomato again. Tomato. Have we want to say it? Yes.
- 13:12Please guess that rating. Oh God, guess the rating. Yeah, try to guess 13. Three.
- 13:20It's three. The audience scores are 36. That's hilarious. My brother-in-law loves that movie. It's so
- 13:29funny. That in itself just tells you how bad of a movie that it actually is. That's hilarious.
- 13:37Yeah. Oh, man. You know, my favorite quote unquote bad movie is Josie and the pussy cats. I love that movie.
- 13:46Oh, my God. Yeah. Oh, my God. You know, I think that movie has a little bit of a cult following now.
- 13:52Or at least it's kind of had its renaissance because we're all just clamoring for Y2K right now.
- 13:58And the fashion is just so 2000s in that movie. But I unabashedly love that movie so much.
- 14:05Oh, man. Okay. I actually, I might have one. It's probably kind of got a cult following too. I don't
- 14:12know. Maybe not. But like any of the scary movies, like scary movie one, scary two. They're obviously
- 14:19they're terrible. But I love them. I don't know. I think it's so funny. They just do spoof, soft
- 14:25of regular scary movies. But the one that gets me is the Charlie Sheen one in the scene.
- 14:32And his apartment he just falls over his balcony. I'm so funny. Oh, yeah.
- 14:38Terrible movies. They're all so terrible and so offensive. Like, I don't remember what's the second one
- 14:44or the third one. But it's the guy with like his little hand and the mashed potatoes. It's just so
- 14:49that stuff. Yeah, those movies are hilarious. Mm-hmm. You know, I just thought to another movie that I saw
- 14:57at a local theater and they were doing. I don't know if it was a midnight showing, but it was one of those
- 15:02things where they encouraged everyone to come and dress up. Speak along with the movies,
- 15:07sing the songs, which are, you know, usually discouraged during movies. But it's different with
- 15:11these cult following movies. If you know the lines, you're encouraged to say them. It was a showing of
- 15:16spice world, the Spice Girls movie. And it was so much fun. We dressed in 90s outfits. We danced in
- 15:26the aisles. We knew every line to that movie. And yeah, that was a great time. So I could definitely see,
- 15:33again, within the stahl just stuff, you know, people are just, you know, things that they liked in
- 15:38childhood or the fashion that they liked back then. Gosh, thinking of some other movies with cult
- 15:44following super troopers, the lab rent, empire records, clue, Donnie Darko for sure. I know people
- 15:52have based their entire personalities in high school around Donnie Darko. My god.
- 15:57McGrubber to some is known as a movie with a cult following or a movie that's so bad that it's good.
- 16:05And that movie stands out to me because it was my first date with my husband ever. Yeah, he finally
- 16:13asked me out. We went to the movies and we saw McGrubber and it's awful. It's so bad. And then coming
- 16:22out of the movie, I mean, we cracked up the entire time like idiots. And we left a theater and we're
- 16:27like, that was terrible. And I loved every second of it. So dumb. I love that. I was going to say,
- 16:32I'm mad like, was that your suggestion or his or both? It was his for sure. It was definitely his.
- 16:38Did you know anything going into it? No, going into it, like it was this sketch on SNL. And so he showed
- 16:45me like a couple of the like YouTube clips of the sketch. And it's making fun of McGiver,
- 16:51like this 70s television show where this guy can fix anything with like a safety pin and some dental
- 16:58floss. Yeah, and we were done. I was like, that was a movie. Oh, man, I didn't know if that'd be
- 17:07the deal breaker. Obviously it wasn't. But like, okay, like, why did you take me to this movie?
- 17:14All right. See you live for my first date. Sorry. Sorry. Look what you are now. So it obviously worked out.
- 17:22That's true. We've been married for a minute. So I think it's okay. Oh, man. It's super troopers.
- 17:29Oh my god. All of those movies like, oh gosh, beer fest in super troopers. I think they're called
- 17:36broken lizard or club. I don't know. There's some name for this group of people who make movies
- 17:42in both of those are in it. And they're so ridiculous. If you haven't watched Beerfest,
- 17:47I highly suggest it. It's a couple of guys who love beer and want to brew the greatest beer
- 17:54ever known and go to a competition. Sounds like every man alive. Honestly.
- 18:00There was a lot of people I went to college with who based the personalities on Beerfest too and
- 18:05like, chugging beer out of Das Boot. Oh, man. So another group of movies kind of similar to that where
- 18:16they don't really have anything to do with each other. But it's the same cast and crew who make
- 18:22them all is the Cornetto trilogy. These are films that are directed by Edgar Wright and they
- 18:30star Simon Pegg. Yes, Simon Pegg and shit. What's the guy's name? Nick Frost. Yeah. So there
- 18:39movies that were directed by Edgar Wright, they star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and a lot of them.
- 18:45So the three movies there are Sean of the Dead, which is probably my favorite.
- 18:50Hot Fuzz, which is also hilarious and so disgusting. And then The World's End, which I think is an
- 18:58underrated queen. But Sean of the Dead, I actually dressed up as for Halloween a couple years ago,
- 19:05I was Sean of the Dead. So I had like a white button up shirt with blood splattered on it and I had a
- 19:11tie around my head. And I had a cricket bat that I carried around myself. So those movies are amazing
- 19:18too. And I think that if we ever got a chance to go see those in theaters, that would be hilarious.
- 19:22I'm not going to see any of these. I would love again the experience of the room
- 19:27Canada makes me want to go and experience more of movies like this, even if they're terrible, just
- 19:32being surrounded by the people made it. Those three are amazing. Those I'm sure on Rotten Tomatoes have
- 19:38at least 80s and 90s for some of them. Those are good movies. But yeah, they're definitely goofy and
- 19:44over the top and splattered with blood everywhere. But yeah, okay. So now our plan is me and you
- 19:52find a good cult film with a live showing that we can go to. Yes, I'm down. Yeah, I've
- 20:00ends up being Rocky Horror. Then you have to go up for the Virgin Sacrifice. Oh, I will. I will.
- 20:05This thing I'll actually go up the room I didn't go up when they asked to read lines. I was like,
- 20:10no, I'm not doing that. Not a good actor. I don't I think that would be the point if you're a bad actor
- 20:17would probably make it good for the room. I went up for the first one when I saw it live and I played
- 20:22Tommy and it's so bad. Just like, I love you, darling. Thanks for the pasta. It was so bad and I was
- 20:31amazing. Yeah, but that'll be our plan now Nicole. We're going to find a cult. A cult film that we
- 20:37can laugh about. We are inside Jim. Even if anything, we'll suggest it to Majestic say, hey,
- 20:42have a screening of this. Yes, have a core netto trilogy screening. That's going to be my vote.
- 20:48It wouldn't surprise me if they've done it before, especially like Rocky Horror. Do it in October
- 20:53because it's a zombie movie. But Hot Fuzz is about cops. You can do that anytime.
- 20:59That's another episode of the Pop Culture Junkie podcast and where can the bad movie lovers out
