Transcript
- 0:15Hello everybody. Dando here for the latest episode of four Finger Discount Extra here
- 0:19on the four Finger Discount Network. Today, we're going to be discussing the
- 0:22most gruesome deaths of Trios of Horror and I was lucky to be joined by
- 0:26my co host from Gooday Ew the Wrestling Podcast here on the four Finger Discount
- 0:29Network, mister Elliott J O'Neil from the Simpsons Index Podcast. Yes, he
- 0:33has a Simpsons podcast of his own, so make sure you check that out.
- 0:36You can find a link for it in the description of this pod.
- 0:38But yes, like I said, we're going to be covering the most gruesome
- 0:40deaths of Treehouse of Horror. I'm a big fan of Halloween. You know,
- 0:45going up in Australia, Halloween wasn't a thing and look at all you
- 0:48know, we'd get the specials on TV, the Halloween specials, not just
- 0:51for the Simpsons before anything really, but you know it, it was never
- 0:54a thing. We never went trickle treating or anything like that. And I
- 0:57found about ten years ago Australia sort of break a bit more. They sort
- 1:00of went, no, what it's a bit of fun. Now, kids
- 1:03go around, get some candy lollies, as we call them here in Australia,
- 1:06and you know, just just go dross up in costumes and why not,
- 1:07It's just it's just fun. And then COVID happened, and I feel
- 1:11like Halloween never really recovered in Australia. It's been what two years now since
- 1:17COVID's kind of been finished, and it's getting back to where it kind of
- 1:21was pre COVID, but not quite. But last year we had a few
- 1:23kids trick or treating around the neighborhood. I'm excited for the trick or treating
- 1:26in a couple of weeks time. It's the seventeenth today, so we're gonna
- 1:29be trick or treading in about two weeks time as of this recording. My
- 1:33son Ali, he cannot wait. He is now five. He went last
- 1:34year and unfortunately we went out a little bit too late last year. I
- 1:38thought it was like fine, you know, about five o'clock, but apparently
- 1:41the kids knock off school and go trick or treating and all the lollies were
- 1:44already gone. So we'll make sure we get out nice and early for trick
- 1:47or treating this year. But my daughter Holly, she cannot wait. This
- 1:49is her first ever Halloween trick or treating to both their costumes picked out.
- 1:53Actually, Holly is turning three in four days. Times a happy birthday to
- 1:56my daughter Holly, she's turning three. Like I said, I've got my
- 1:59costume dad as well. I'm going as Dr Alan Grant from Dressy Park.
- 2:04Basically what I've done has got the costume, but I've gone one step further.
- 2:07I've just got the costume. I went and purchased from Target. There's
- 2:10like this animatronic baby t Rex that you put on like a glove essentially,
- 2:14and they can control the eyes and mouth of raw and all that kind of
- 2:16stuff. So I'm expecting a lot of kids to want to get a photo
- 2:20with this baby t Rex with Rexy and Doctor Alan Grant as we do some
- 2:23trick or treating. But yeah, enough about that, Enough about my personal
- 2:25Halloween shenanigans. We're here today to talk about the most gruesome deaths of trios
- 2:30of horror, And what I found was there wasn't all that many in the
- 2:34earlier seasons. For some reason in my mind, they were gory in the
- 2:37early days, but there weren't so much though they were spooky, but there
- 2:39weren't gory. The more gory ones came towards the later seasons. But you
- 2:44know, we cover everything, not just ones that happen in the actual segments,
- 2:47the ones that happening the little bits in between and things like that as
- 2:50well. So I hope you guys enjoy that. As I said, though
- 2:53the Simpsons Index, make sure you check that podcast that it is sensational.
- 2:55It is co hosted by elliot j O'Neil, who you're about to hear in
- 2:59just a few moments, and as you'll be well aware, he is a
- 3:00Simpsons super fan like you and I so thank you again for checking out four
- 3:05fiscan Extra and I hope you enjoy my chat with the legendary Ali Jay O'Neil
- 3:09from The Simpsons Index discussing the most gruesome depths of Trios of Horror. Yeah,
- 3:20there's something about the trios of horror episodes. It's just they're just so
- 3:23fun, aren't they. You know, you just say what you will about
- 3:27the modern day Simpsons. You still get excited for the Halloween ones because you
- 3:30know they're gonna be I don't know, maybe it's my love for gore and
- 3:36horror that just sort of attracts me to it. But you know, they're
- 3:38always gonna deliver in something. It might not be the best ones, but
- 3:39they're always gonna deliver in some way. With the Halloween episodes, Yeah,
- 3:44like from a very early age, I loved these episodes just being able to
- 3:47explore these exact characters but in a very very different way, and you know,
- 3:53in a much more cartoony way, surprisingly enough for a cartoon. But
- 3:58yeah, this is where we get to to play with the Simpsons a bit
- 4:00like they were our action figures and then at some points drop their heads off
- 4:05and it's very blood everywhere. I can just imagine back in like, you
- 4:09know, the early NINETI when the show first started, they would have loved
- 4:12to have gotten to these ones because they can just sort of break cannon.
- 4:15Because they're all nerds and all horror nerds and sci fi nerds. Have been
- 4:17able to sort of combine their show, The Simpsons, with their love of
- 4:20sci fi and horror and all these other aspects would have just been so incredible
- 4:24for them. I feel like the transpire would have been when they sort of,
- 4:27like everyone sort of would have wanted to just make sure that they had
- 4:30at their finger in that pie for that episode. Oh absolutely, and just
- 4:33the excuse not to have to be so strict into Simpson's cannon, like I
- 4:40mean, well, you know, if US fans will complain about the whibly
- 4:44wobbly, timey wimy nature of The Simpsons, especially at the moment, and
- 4:47you know, what is continuity, But it's it's nice not to even think
- 4:51of those discussions when talking about Treehouse of Horror. It's just from its outset,
- 4:57it's this isn't the Simpsons. This is the at the Simpsons Treehouse of
- 5:00Horror. It's the same characters, but we're doing something very different this week.
- 5:04Don't worry, we'll be a normal show next week. But yeah,
- 5:08just sit back and have fun. And they so often are They're so often
- 5:12the better episodes of the more recent seasons as well. It's funny whenever I
- 5:15talk to Matt Salmon, he hates the way continuity. He's just he just,
- 5:20oh, I know I've seen his Twitter rounds. Okay, really yeah,
- 5:25We're just chatting that time in his mumble a couple of weeks ago,
- 5:28and he's just like, I know why people are so such stickless of continuity.
- 5:30By season thirty five. You know, it's just like just just enjoy
- 5:32the show, just take it episode by episode, like I agree to you
- 5:35an extent now. And I feel like the way the guy and I've been
- 5:39reviewing the episodes and up to season eighteen, you've just got to go.
- 5:43Does did this thirty minutes or twenty minutes entertain me? You know? I
- 5:46feel like continuity kind of died. I want to say maybe season ten to
- 5:50twelve ish is that when you feel like the proper cotton principle on the porpho,
- 5:54it's sort of like the final nails, don't you reckon for continuity?
- 5:58Not that the show was ruined, but like when you want to include continuity,
- 6:00that sort of fucked things up a bit, didn't it. Yeah?
- 6:03Actually, I think you've had him on the show before, right, the
- 6:06real Gyms. Yeah, he did a pretty good video recently about the Simpsons
- 6:12continuity and actually made the argument that they'd sort of been breaking the continuity fairly
- 6:17early on as well, and it's always been you know, this is,
- 6:23let's say a town that's just sort of stuck in a time loop where they
- 6:26all stay the same, but the world around them ages. And yeah,
- 6:30he made a very reasonable argument that they've been doing this since the start,
- 6:32So, like, I think it was a little bit easy, easier to
- 6:38get behind in the early days because it was like, oh yeah, margin
- 6:42Homer were in high school in the seventies and then they had the kids in
- 6:44the eighties, and then that made sense. But yeah, once it got
- 6:46to season ten and twelve, they couldn't tell those stories anymore. And you
- 6:51know against the points where yeah, of course, like that nineties show where
- 6:55people think it's a bit more egregious than others. But yeah, that's one
- 6:59of Matt Salmon's face favorites. This is such a bad episode anyway, is
- 7:02it really? I can remember watching it when it first and being like somewhat
- 7:06confused. But anyway, that's a story for another episode for it. We're
- 7:11here today though, because you know, here at four Fingers getting extra,
- 7:13we like to just pick a theme or a topic and just Simpson's banter.
- 7:16So today you and I we thought what Halloween think we doing. We went
- 7:18with glorious or most gruesome deaths of Trios of Horror, because there are some
- 7:24seriously, seriously gruesome deaths. And I went through and watched skim through all
- 7:27the Triosta Horrors in preparation for this one, and I found some in later
- 7:30years that I hadn't actually seen before, and it made me go, Holy
- 7:32Molly. I always hear about this one where Homer eats himself, right,
- 7:38yeah, And I may have seen it when it first came out. I
- 7:41don't think I would have. I would have remembered this. But man,
- 7:44you've said to me that you want to include this in one of your ones
- 7:46you want to talk about. So let's just kick off with Homer eating himself.
- 7:49What Triosa Horror was that one from? Again? So? Yeah,
- 7:51that was from season twenty nine's Treehouse of Horror to twenty eight. Fuck.
- 7:57That's the annoying thing when talking about Treehouse of Horrors that you always have minus
- 8:00one from the seasons. But anyway, I'll get that little bitching rant out
- 8:03of the way. Yeah. So the segment's called Homer. It's the last
- 8:07segment in that Treehouse of Horror twenty eight and it is the first Treehouse of
- 8:11Horror anything that has come with Simpson's family member stepping out in front of the
- 8:16red curtain for a warning and it's just pretty much it's Lisa and she just
- 8:22warns the viewers, and it's it's almost pretty dry in that way. And
- 8:28she was right to do so, because this segment is fucked up, like
- 8:31you say, first time or first time in a long time, first time
- 8:33in a long time. Sorry, Yeah, okay, cool, Yeah,
- 8:35to make Sean like I'm sure remembers March the time, right, yeah,
- 8:39yeah, for the first like four or five Treehouse of Horrors or something.
- 8:43Yeah, and I feel like this episode, this segment really needed it because
- 8:48it wasn't necessarily like gory, but it was just oh, it was just
- 8:52on a new level of just grossness. Yeah. Absolutely, Like I've often
- 8:56thought about, you know, because Halloween is a pretty big deal where I
- 9:01live, and I sort of fantasized about like setting up a projector and just
- 9:05playing Treehouse of Horrors, you know, for the few hours while kids are
- 9:09doing their trick or treating. But like, I ultimately decided against it because
- 9:15yeah, even like the earlier Treehouse of Horrors, even though they were death
- 9:18Light, they would sometimes have some gory and gruesome moments and yeah, we'll
- 9:22get into them today, but yeah, especially this one. If it like,
- 9:26if it came up, I'd be like hitting the skip button immediately,
- 9:30because yeah, this this one gets beyond the point of fun for me,
- 9:35and just it's so bleak. It's so sad at the end of year,
- 9:39feeling so empty. Like Homer, he's just gone the family don't have a
- 9:45father anymore, and she doesn't have a husband anymore. He couldn't resist the
- 9:48fact that he wanted to taste himself. And now he's gonna be a seasoning.
- 9:50And I was like, this isn't fun at all. No, no,
- 9:54and a seasoning developed by a very canceled chef Mario Batali as well.
- 9:58So all kinds of bleak in this segment. But yeah. It starts out
- 10:03the family are on a vacation or something, and Homer's left to fend for
- 10:07himself and he gets frozen hot dogs out the very famous Simpsons frozen hot dogs,
- 10:13and in the process of making them, cuts off his own finger,
- 10:16puts it on the grill and then just almost immediately is turned into a cannibal
- 10:22self cannibal and he just eats his body pats throughout the entire episode. Yeah,
- 10:28and when he was like grating himself, I was just, oh,
- 10:31maybe my skin for all man. I was like, oh, this is
- 10:33this is so weird. It was just a weird one for me. Yeah,
- 10:37well, I mean talking about most gruesome, this is probably the most
- 10:39prolonged death out of any Treehouse of Horror, because yeah, this Homer whittling
- 10:45himself away to eat himself, like, it takes up pretty much the whole
- 10:48segment. And yeah, he does die at the end, like what remains
- 10:54of him Murrio Batali turns him into it. Yeah, like you said,
- 10:56a seasoning, but yeah, throughout that we just get that horrible montage.
- 11:01Yeah, of like the grading himself and then like him putting a corkscrew into
- 11:05his ear and pulling out some brain and yeah, using a tea one of
- 11:09his tooth to top a muffin, Like, come on, Homer. I
- 11:16do like the visual where he was they arrive home and he's trying to walk
- 11:18with like one lenk. It had its funny moments, but yeah, that
- 11:22the bleakness just overrode any any sort of positivity in this segment. It was
- 11:26just a strange and to end it on it as well, so like they
- 11:31left you with this one, like you you ended this chreess of horror feeling
- 11:35like shit, I don't know, weird, No, I it really Yeah,
- 11:39lacked in jokes, lacked him funny, and was really going for that
- 11:41shock value, which yeah, isn't exactly what makes up my sort of favorite
- 11:46treehouse of horror segments. But you know, if we're talking the criteria of
- 11:50today, what is like the most gruesome moments, there is actually a lot
- 11:54that you can pick from the newer seasons, they do tend to go for
- 11:58a lot more gore than certainly they did in the older days. But yeah,
- 12:03this one is so effective in that way they really did. I feel
- 12:09like, you know, you watched the first ten seasons or so, there
- 12:11wasn't that much gore really in the first ten seasons. It was more sort
- 12:15of just like horror theme as opposed to actual gore, where I feel like,
- 12:18maybe more towards the later seasons and these kind of seasons, they rely
- 12:22heavily more on the gore than the actual storytelling. Yeah. Absolutely, Like
- 12:26one are the ones that didn't make my list because it's I think it's called
- 12:31Oh the Places You'll Doe. It's like a weird parody of The Cat and
- 12:35the Hat where Homer's the cat and he's just going on a murder spree.
- 12:39I didn't include it because like no one death stands out because the whole segment
- 12:43is just these loose rhyming couplets while Homer is just going on a murder spree,
- 12:46and it's just it's actually quite boring in its gore. Like it was
- 12:52more of an animation showcase, wasn't it. Yeah, yeah, that's one
- 12:56of the other things. You know, say what you want about the New
- 12:58Era. Most of the episodes look fantastic, and this was one of them
- 13:01where yeah, they obviously put in so much work to get in that doctor
- 13:05says style that, yeah, they neglected to make an effective episode in amongst
- 13:11that all. But yeah, like there are like a lot of examples of
- 13:16this sort of thing where yeah, they just go for more of the gore
- 13:22or sometimes like more just a movie parody or something, and yeah, it
- 13:24doesn't doesn't quite be as effective as Treehouse of Bold. And that's why in
- 13:31the early ones, when you got for example, when really got the axe
- 13:33in the back, it stood out. It was like, well shit,
- 13:37you know, because you didn't see all that much. But I've told this
- 13:39story a million times of course, but just in case anyone hasn't heard it,
- 13:41the Trance of horr episode is actually the reason I wasn't allowed to watch
- 13:43The Simpsons till I was like seven. Oh that's right. I would have
- 13:46told you, right, Remember how I groped the knife out of the hitching
- 13:48drawer? Yeah, so bad dream house, thank you very much. So
- 13:54it's it makes sense now that I'm a dad. Like before I became a
- 13:58father, would have gone, ah, what's the point warning? You know,
- 14:01fuck it? The kids shouldn't be watching it anyway. But now I'm
- 14:03just like, just it's so easy to come across the Simpsons, you know,
- 14:07not so much now I feel I feel like, now with the Simpsons,
- 14:11you have to find the Simpsons because we don't have it on free to
- 14:13air TV in Australia. I'm not sure what it's like around the world,
- 14:16but if you want to watch the Simpsons now in Australia, it's Disney Plus
- 14:18or Bust right, oh, because I don't have free to wear TV get
- 14:22hooked up at my home at all. But I thought they were on like
- 14:24Channel seven now, which is weird. Really Yeah, okay, yeah,
- 14:28that's that's that's it. I'd rather forget about that. It's too dirty for
- 14:31me. We grew up on Channel ten. I understand why they warn kids
- 14:35for this segment, because you just don't want kids chopping their thumbs off and
- 14:39putting on the barbecue do Yeah, no, no, it's some Yeah,
- 14:43it's like we'll get into it with the list, but yeah, there are
- 14:46some like moments that went for it, and like especially moments where like,
- 14:50yeah, you talk to people about it, it's like, yeah, that
- 14:52fucked me up as a kid, Like that was worse than watching the actual
- 14:56like horror movie that they're referencing in times. Yeah, yeah, it's fine.
- 15:00And a lot of the things too with the Simpsons when they take off
- 15:03horror movies is that many of the kids were introduced to horror franchises through the
- 15:07Simpsons. I didn't know what For example, this isn't a franchise, but
- 15:11I didn't know what The Shining was. When I was a kid. I
- 15:13was like, oh, it's a movie, it's not just a shitting Yeah.
- 15:18I still haven't seen it, Oh my god, Like really, yeah,
- 15:20okay, I've seen most of it. I remember I fell asleep twice.
- 15:24I've tried asleep. Real effective horror movie then, very very effective.
- 15:30I want to talk about one that was I think one of the more brutal
- 15:33ones of the Golden era. Maybe isn't nice gruesome? I'm not so sure,
- 15:39but it's the Fox censor at the beginning. I want to say Trios
- 15:41of Horror eight, I believe, or seven that it keeps getting stabbed in
- 15:46the back. Yeah, and the rating for the episode keeps going up and
- 15:50up. Yeah. I remember, because that wasn't long after the I was
- 15:54aloud to watch the Simpsons again. I remember it coming on and Mum beans
- 15:58still a bit sort of like what do you sure about these Simpsons? And
- 16:02then and then that came on. I was like, of all the episodes,
- 16:04better than to put on Well, I was trying to think about this
- 16:10because you know, with Simpsons in syndication we ad at five nights a week,
- 16:15six sometimes with new episodes or whatever six o'clock Channel ten, and everyone
- 16:19knows the routine. Were Treehouse of Horrors just in the loop, because I
- 16:26have a weird memory of some episodes being like held back and then they do
- 16:29like Simpsons Late Night or something to air them, like the Homer Weed episode
- 16:34margin Homer Fornicating Outdoors episodes. I'm trying to remember if like Treehouse of Horrors
- 16:40were just exempt from the syndication thing. I think that's some of them were.
- 16:45I feel like they would have been, because I can't recall seeing them
- 16:48all that often and just syndication. But you'd get like, yeah, around
- 16:52Halloween time, you cheers of Horror at marathon nights where contended like seven thirty
- 16:56to nine thirty or something, or maybe eight o'clock till ten o'clock. It
- 16:59was always that little bit like you're right, yeah, but the all new
- 17:00ones were always at seven thirty. But I think I put this on because
- 17:04we've got Foxtowler Rember at the same time. So Fox tub didn't care.
- 17:07They gave no shits. They just put whatever episode on at any time.
- 17:10Yeah, true, And yeah I remember this one coming on and Mum just
- 17:12being like, you can watch it, but I told you I don't like
- 17:18these Simpsons, and Mum just had a knack for watching the ones that would
- 17:21make a a cautious parent not want their child to watch the show exactly.
- 17:26And yeah, if it's not him getting constantly stabbed in the back, he
- 17:29did make a joke we could do without the crack pipe, you know,
- 17:32yes, but but yeah, that was a more confronting one for me.
- 17:36When I was a kid, I was like, Wow, they're not holding
- 17:37back, he's just getting stabbed. Yeah. Yeah, and that was from
- 17:41Treehouse of Horror eight from season nine. Yep, So still still golden ear
- 17:45in my eyes for me? When when does your golden ear end? Well?
- 17:52On the Simpsons Index, When we averaged out our scores, we do
- 17:56see a bit of a drop from season eight to season nine in our like
- 17:59average rankings, But to me, I don't know, season nine just still
- 18:03feels classic eerror And as part of our mission statement in the show, we
- 18:07still considered nine the classic era. But like, I still feel like seasons
- 18:14nine to thirteen conveniently line up into the tweens era for me, and like
- 18:19they have like a particular flavor that four or five season run there where Yeah,
- 18:26it's still good, obviously not at the quality of the previous years,
- 18:29but like, yeah, it's it's a bit more out there and stuff.
- 18:32I don't I don't think we're quite in you know, the teens slump that
- 18:36a lot of people, that turned a lot of people off. But yeah,
- 18:37like seasons nine to thirteen, I feel like there's still some pretty solid
- 18:41stuff that still lost a few people. But I think it's because they were
- 18:45going a bit more bizarre and a bit more experimental and stuff. Yeah,
- 18:48yeah, I'm the same. For me, my golden era sort of doesn't
- 18:52end at twelve, but for me twelve, I want to say between like
- 18:56four or twelve anything. Yeah, but if you got back into the show
- 18:59around Sea nine, yeah, this would still be like, well, really
- 19:03the first the first episode I was allowed to watch that was a new one
- 19:06new episode was Treut of Horror six. Yeah. Right, So was that
- 19:11the Homer three D? One? That was Homer three D? Yeah,
- 19:14it was so excited. I was like, oh, new Simpson. It
- 19:15was like the Simpsons in three D. And here's me thinking, like get
- 19:18my little blue and red glasses on and think it's gonna be the whole episode
- 19:21of three D. Yeah, it wasn't that kind of three D. But
- 19:23that was that was three D the nineties kids, red and white cellophane.
- 19:27Yeah, that's right. Uh No, this was Simpsons stepping into a whole
- 19:32new era, not a gruesome death. So it doesn't make any of our
- 19:34list, unfortunately. All I do remember being scared at that death. I
- 19:40was home. It like came apart at the scenes and like as he was
- 19:42being ripped through time and space, like, oh, what's gonna happen to
- 19:47him? Like, but it's it's a non continuity episode. He'll be fine.
- 19:49But I always loved the ending for that one though. In the real
- 19:53world it just felt so special. It was so cool, you know,
- 19:56none that felt the special effects that would have been like ninety five, I
- 19:59reckon six. That's it was so well done for its time in my opinion.
- 20:03No, it's still very impressive and like I think I used that footage
- 20:07for a long time at Sydney's Imax Theater as part of like a animation showcase
- 20:11sort of thing. Yeah cool, yeah, alrighty well, yeah, that's
- 20:15one of my gruesome ones. What's another gruesome one from you? I had
- 20:18another gruesome one actually, yeah, from around that time, the ending of
- 20:25I think it was Treehouse of Horror five. Yeah, yeah, because it's
- 20:27my favorite one, so way most people's favorite one, right, Yeah,
- 20:33it's just it's so solid, it's what it's time and punishment, it's Nightmare
- 20:37Cafeteria and ah am I not thinking of the shitt oh that shitting. Yeah,
- 20:44just talked about that one before. So yeah, when Bart wakes up
- 20:48from the Nightmare Cafeteria and then it was all just a dream. Honey,
- 20:52don't worry. There's nothing that can hurt you except that skin that turns sorry,
- 20:56except that fog that turns everyone's skin inside out. I like, I've
- 21:00got a huge tolerance for gross stuff, but oh man, I still find
- 21:04this bit hard to watch where everyone's skin turns inside out. It's like blood
- 21:10splattering every Well, yeah, it was gross. I'm just thinking about it
- 21:15now. It might not be a death per se. I guess Santa's little
- 21:17helper does drag Bart away at the end of it, but it's still he's
- 21:19definitely dead. Yeah, yeah, but yeah, it's still just the uh
- 21:26the horror as like the Simpsons are like clearly feeling all the pain in the
- 21:30world as this is happening. Like the animators like really must have a lot
- 21:33of fun with these episodes as well, just being able to like contort and
- 21:40just disturbing images of the Simpsons. Yeah, as their skid is literally turning
- 21:45inside out, that must also be a fun process. Ah what does this
- 21:48look like? You know? You also notice a lot more in the recent
- 21:52ones too, is when it comes to the animation, a lot of them
- 21:53are sort of like themed ones aren't there because I'm the last one. We
- 21:56had the take on what was the death Note? Oh yeah, yeah,
- 22:02the anime? Yeah yeah, like that, And there was another one that
- 22:06was like Parasite? Was it Parasite? The one before that there was like
- 22:10recently, there's been a lot of like Treus of Horrors where the animation style
- 22:12is so different from the normal, And we had the toy story based one
- 22:15that's more like CGI. So the animes are really sort of they're treating these
- 22:19ones like their babies to showcase what they can actually achieve. Yeah, And
- 22:23I guess back then when they didn't have the resources that they do now,
- 22:27you know, like, yeah, you mentioned the toy story one, a
- 22:30fully CGI segment. You know, we are definitely thirty years removed from ooh
- 22:37we got Homer in three D and we got but a little bit in three
- 22:40D And yeah, I don't I guess it was just a bit more special
- 22:47back then, knowing that, like these moments are so limited and so far
- 22:51and few, and you know, when they were doing movie parodies, they
- 22:55really had to make some creative decisions with how they were going to ate that
- 22:59style because they couldn't do things like I know this isn't an actually at AOL,
- 23:03but it's just easier to do it this way. Yeah, pop on
- 23:06the death note filter on everything you know and you know, but we're talking
- 23:11back in the days of pencil paper drawing and like animation, models weren't as
- 23:15copy and paste as they are now. So yeah, the other shows would
- 23:18have been willing to let them copy their style because now it's just like,
- 23:22oh, the Simpsons want to take us off, go for it. But
- 23:23yeah, absolutely, maybe in the early nineties, like, nah, you're
- 23:26kind of a competition. I don't think we want you still in a style.
- 23:30Yeah, exactly. Actually, just bringing on that as well. I
- 23:33always remember the Nightmare on ever Green Terror segment, like the start of that
- 23:38being really affecting to me, just like how watercolor and the backgrounds and stuff
- 23:44were, and how it just looked different, like they did a fantastic for
- 23:48me. I still think the best Trets of Horror is Treats of Horror five,
- 23:51like for the reasons you said before, but my favorite will always be
- 23:53Trants of Horror six abecause have got in the styles you ever been the first
- 23:56new episode that I ever got to see since the infamation Mum, Simpsons band.
- 24:00But also I just think it's a great combination of just like like monster
- 24:03movie, gore and sci fi and I just I just loved that one.
- 24:08I love every segment in TREESA Horrs six because you got attack of the fifty
- 24:11foot I saw was night Man, Never Green Terrorists and Homer three D.
- 24:15Yeah, so I remember us comparing less was something from Nightmare and ever Green
- 24:22Terrorists one of yours, I believe. Yeah, really getting burned to death,
- 24:26that's right, Yeah, yeah, which is like both gruesome and funny
- 24:30at the same time because it's really, you know, we always really sort
- 24:33of like the punching bag, but burning to death just seems like the most
- 24:36horrific way to go in my opinion. I just imagine, just yeah,
- 24:40I accidentally touched the frying payment on cooking a sturf fry and I'm adding commission
- 24:42for like three weeks. Imagine being burnt to death. I kin'd of.
- 24:47I just don't want to even imagine it. So just the idea of being
- 24:49burnt to death is just horrific. And yeah, that's why it's made my
- 24:52list of like gruesome deaths, because it's got to be up there right.
- 24:56Yeah, well, especially like watching the Simpsons and how they do their flavor
- 25:00on doing a horror segment, and this one in particular, like you said,
- 25:03it's still like funny. It's it must be such a tricky thing to
- 25:07balance, Yeah, doing something that's meant to be horror and affecting and gory
- 25:11and all that, and then still managed to weave in jokes in amongst it
- 25:15all, and then just having nobody give a fuck when Willy burst into the
- 25:19room bursting slaves, will you please, mister van Houghton has the floor And
- 25:26yeah, where we get the infamous to spaghetti Dinner's line, but we also
- 25:30get that do not touch Willy, we get smart. Whether we get so
- 25:33many I can't segment not into the kindergarten. Yeah, so that was actually
- 25:41the death I thought you were going to talk about from this segment, is
- 25:42the Martin death, because this is one of these things where what actually happens
- 25:48isn't too gory or gruesome or anything like that. Really, it's what you
- 25:52see is Willy's like extended, cartoonishly long tongue wrapped around Martin. But then
- 25:59Martin's reaction in the classroom when he wakes up and he's dying, is well
- 26:04that's the thing. Yeah, true, true, just yeah, a couple
- 26:08of screams and then falls in that jagged ass position and ah it is that
- 26:15was like one of my most affecting moments, I gotta say. And then,
- 26:18as you said, ending that scene with Nelson saying ha ha as well.
- 26:23So yeah, I just that was one of my favorite because everyone always
- 26:26goes to the shitting, but I think they the way they took off the
- 26:29Nightmare elm Street series of that segment is almost up there. Arguably is it
- 26:33better? I don't know, Like I just I mean, I think the
- 26:37shitting is more memorable. But man, Evergreens Terrorists when it comes to parody,
- 26:41is almost on the same level in my opinion. Well, it's also
- 26:45trying so hard, like it does so much effort to make the dream sequences
- 26:51look really cool and different as well, like other worldly, like in the
- 26:56final showdown when you know Willi's the or mower and everything like, yeah,
- 27:00the sky's that particular weird green gradient and just everything looks a little different,
- 27:07like they really had to workshop this one. And yeah, the effort shows,
- 27:11and it pays off as well, because yeah, I agree, it's
- 27:14I don't know if it's better, but certainly up there with my favorite segments.
- 27:18You may be have to explain it to me. The only thing about
- 27:21that segment was that I never quite understood the ending with Willy coming off the
- 27:22bus and trying to scare the kids. That was a weird thing. Yeah,
- 27:29it was. It was certainly a choice just to sort of undercut his
- 27:32whole danger and presence where like he just leaves something on the seat or whatever.
- 27:37It's like, yeah, you have the shoe behind. But I was
- 27:38like, so is he dead or is he not? Like maybe this is
- 27:42a Freddy Krueger reference. I don't know, I've only seen like the first
- 27:45Nightmare film. Yeah, yeah, I'm not too sure, but maybe you
- 27:48guys can let me know. Simce his mailbager gym edit come. That one
- 27:51always confused me. But yeah, Willy being burned to death and the fact
- 27:53that you know, a he's burning to death and no one's doing anything about
- 27:56it. It's just horrific. Happens have you got Yeah, let's jump to
- 28:02the teens era for one. I think you guys might have done this episode
- 28:04recently actually, where Homer was the blob okay, yep. Yeah, So
- 28:10my gruesome death from this is one where Marge points out that he's eaten.
- 28:15Yeah, so Homer's eating everything and everyone and he's turning into the blob and
- 28:22Marge points out that he eats the cat. And you see Snowball twos or
- 28:26five's whatever, Simpsons, the continuity you want to go with. You see
- 28:30her head like poking out of the gut and then yeah, Homer just whacks
- 28:36her with a butt. Yeah, it's just I don't know it was confronted
- 28:40because it's anything of animal cruelty just gets me man, and hitting the cat
- 28:45like several times before it actually died in the head with the frying pan.
- 28:48I'm like, I don't know about this. Joys, guys, nice.
- 28:52This is not funny in any way to anyone watching this show. I don't
- 28:55think. No, Like, Homer blob eating the cat is one thing,
- 28:57but then yeah it with a bat, like, I don't know, it
- 29:02just you wouldn't have done that with the cat outside the stomach, and I
- 29:04don't think that it makes it funny of being inside the stomach, and I
- 29:08are, yeah, yeah, it was that was one where yeah, I
- 29:11was like, oh that was that was a bit much. You just feel
- 29:17bad, poor snoble, Yeah, did nothing wrong. Yeah, and for
- 29:21a segment that was I think it was gonna always gonna happen, you know,
- 29:25the Simpsons were always going to do a Blob parody and yeah. But
- 29:29yeah, that was the most gruesome moment far and away from that one.
- 29:32Most of it was just as I sort of would have expected, like the
- 29:36Simpsons, just yeah, having fun with Homer eating people and things in various
- 29:41funny ways. Yeah, just making an entree out of doctor Phil mcgrare and
- 29:45all that. But yeah, the cat one was a bit too much for
- 29:48me. I want to talk about a poo getting destroyed in the squishing Machine
- 29:53from Hell to Pay for nine. I want to say the scariest part of
- 29:57this for me was that you never actually he saw what happened. You just
- 30:00saw the aftermath, kind of like Martin has slept to imagination, at least
- 30:04with Martin sort of knew I got choked to death by the tongue of Willy
- 30:07here, It's like, what the fuck happened to a pooh? Yeah,
- 30:12that's one of the more underrated Trees of Horror segments as well. I think
- 30:15from like the later years. When I said ladies, I mean like towards
- 30:18the end of like the Golden era. I've always enjoyed Hell to Pay a
- 30:22lot. Yeah, Oh, I really like Treehouse of Horror at nine.
- 30:26I'm pretty sure I gave it like a perfect ranking, and like I do
- 30:30grade the Treehouse of Horrors on a curve as well, because you know,
- 30:33they're inherently different, beast, and I think, yeah, you've got to
- 30:38more just sort of sit back and enjoy them. But yeah, Treehouse nine,
- 30:42yeah you got hell to pay. The Itchy and Scratchy come to real
- 30:47life. And then the Jerry Springer Maggie Aliens. Yeah, yeah, a
- 30:52lot of people rag on that one. I think it's very good. I
- 30:53love it, And now that Jerry Springer has gone, it's almost like a
- 30:56little bit of the stage like, oh, I remember those days when people
- 30:59can just go on TV you can get their tits out and but yeah,
- 31:03and I'll always love it for the line it's like, ooh, Marge Maggie
- 31:07lost her baby legs. I love the I always got a huge kick out
- 31:11of Marge swearing when I was a kid. Oh yeah, the visual of
- 31:15Joey springing it dying just hanging being joked by Maggie and just yeah, yeah
- 31:22I started. That is a really good tress of horror that I don't think
- 31:23people talk about anywhere near enough as a trilogy. No, but I mean
- 31:30except for the mom all yeah, hell two pay is up there with my
- 31:33favorite segments as well, and yeah, that our pool death is so bleak
- 31:37and so horrifying. I love how this segment does build its villain or it's
- 31:42killer in that way. And yeah, I possessed Homer and again cutting it
- 31:48with jokes as well, where yeah you get to see the crime scene after
- 31:52the fact and Arpoo's hanging upside down and like Chief Wigham drinking the squish,
- 31:56how long are we gonna keep? Let me drink that? And my favorite
- 32:02part almost the entire segment is the Hair's legs buckling as it's about to die,
- 32:07Yes, as it's being shot, shaking its fist swearing revenge as well.
- 32:15Great and yeah, not to be underrated. Yeah, now the gruesome
- 32:16death is yeah, snake Homer killing bo as well getting the second in the
- 32:22heart, Yeah, the corkscrew in the heart. Second of appearance of a
- 32:25corkscrew on this podcast. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, exactly what we do.
- 32:29We're gonna be doing am a wrestling podcast after this. Maybe get a
- 32:31few corkscrews in there as well. All right, what's your next one?
- 32:37Uh oh, actually, yeah, let's throw back to a very early one
- 32:39Homer's dream from Treehouse of Horror too. So yeah, this is like the
- 32:45Mister Burns Frankenstein section. Like, now, you might not call them deaths
- 32:50because they're both very alive and attached to each other by the end of the
- 32:53segment, but I think as a good argument to make that both these people
- 32:57definitely died in these moments. So yeah, But so first of all,
- 33:01the moment where mister Burns and Smithers harvest Homer's brain. Yeah, first of
- 33:07all the very cartoonish like soaring off the top of his head, like it's
- 33:10just a little pop cape. And then yeah, the actual pulling of the
- 33:15brain. I always like got a little squeamish when that has snapping sound.
- 33:20That's why I watch it. I have to grab the back of my head
- 33:22and be like, oh, it's kind of like when you see a guy
- 33:25get keeps in between the legs in a film. Whatever, you or I
- 33:30can feel that one. But yeah, the snapping of the brain getting pulled
- 33:31out always gets me. I can hear it now, Yeah, yeah,
- 33:35and even in these days where the animation, certainly in comparison to these days
- 33:39is like fairly rudimentary and a bit crude, but yeah, no, less
- 33:44effecting well, and yeah, the particular folly decision that they made there,
- 33:49like what's the grossest possible sound that we can make for this coming out?
- 33:52And like, yeah, it's equal parts cartoonish and gross and I really love
- 33:57that. And also Burns dies that they're getting square by the fucking stun monster
- 34:00at the end, doesn't he Yeah, the other gruesome death Like yeah,
- 34:04just imagining this poor frailed old man just getting weight that would crush someone,
- 34:09you know, five seven times his size, and just the particular way they
- 34:15drew his neck as it was like flattening out underneath this robot as well,
- 34:21like always stuck with me as well, Like, yeah, a very effective
- 34:25segment, it really was. Yeah, when that always stood out to me
- 34:30that I think the first time I was ever shocked by a trans of horror
- 34:34was Trians of Horror four Terror five and a half feet when the gremlin holds
- 34:37up Flanders decapitated head. M. Yeah, that for me, it was
- 34:42the first time where I went, WHOA, I probably should have maybe,
- 34:46I don't think I've watched the first two seasons. I didn't watch him in
- 34:50real time, so I was sort of had to play catch up. I
- 34:52remember seeing this this trans of Horror four before I saw most of the others,
- 34:55and I remember they're just shocking me that the visual of Flanner's decapitated head
- 34:59because they drew got the spine hanging out at the bottom and things like that,
- 35:01and yeah, yeah, that's another segment that I've always been up in
- 35:05my top five tur at five and a half. They've always really enjoyed it.
- 35:07And I until I was never got the gag with Mollman driving the gremlin.
- 35:14Oh right, I was like, for when I was a kid,
- 35:16I was just thought, oh, so he thinks Moman is a gremlin because
- 35:20he's ugly. Yeah, I was like, oh he's driving a gremlin.
- 35:24There we go. Oh I never thought about that. Oh that's great.
- 35:30Yeah, yeah, that a really amazing segment. And yeah, one of
- 35:34the I'm realizing I actually haven't seen many of the things that they're parroting,
- 35:38but yeah, this one are both the Twilight Zone TV and the segment from
- 35:45the movie as well, starring John Lithgow all very good Dick Solomon from Third
- 35:49Or from the Sun. That's right, Yeah, have you seen it the
- 35:53Twilight Zone movie? Have you? Yeah? That he just does such a
- 35:58good job in that, Like just what an amazing actor like And yeah,
- 36:04if you've seen this segment, you're pretty much seen the segment from the movie.
- 36:07But just imagine, Yeah, the dude from Third Rock and the Sun
- 36:10in the place of bart here or the dad from Harry and Henderson's who says
- 36:15we don't want you. Oh my god for Harry and we du from Cliff
- 36:22had what an amazing career. John Lifthgow rules absolute champion. He was in
- 36:25the latest of the remake of pet Cemetery. I want to say, oh
- 36:29he was. He was the don't go down that Road character. I haven't
- 36:34seen it, but yeah, and yeah he was in the last good season
- 36:37of Dexter as well. Yes, yeah, what a man. Yeah.
- 36:43So yeah, this has turned from a top Treehouse of horror deaths to best
- 36:45John Liftgower appearances. I am the thing that you get touching on how you
- 36:50know you hadn't seen the things at this parody. But one thing the Simpsons
- 36:53did was okay, I was saying, he introduced young younger generation to like,
- 36:59you know, these classic timeless things like the Twilight Zone and things like
- 37:04that, where it made you want to go and explore what are they talking?
- 37:07What is this? And it's sort of like by by parodying them,
- 37:10they made you want to go and find out more about them. So I
- 37:14feel we can think like we can thank the riders of the Simpsons and the
- 37:17animators for pretty much turning this into nerds. I want to say, yeah,
- 37:22absolutely, yeah, Well, I mean, sorry to jump ahead,
- 37:28but yeah. My last one on my list is from Treehouse of Horror twenty
- 37:32five. Sorry, Treehouse of Horror fifteen's The ned Zone, parody of the
- 37:37film Stephen King's The Dead Zone. I think it's a Cronenberg one as well.
- 37:39Yeah it is where yeah, Ned's getting all these premonitions of other people's
- 37:45deaths and yeah, that's actually a Twilight Zone segment. Oh was it?
- 37:50Yeah? Ah, there we go. So the guy, the Guy.
- 37:52I'm pretty sure we explained it the in their review. I'll look it up.
- 37:57The ned Zone the actual store because it's a title as a off the
- 38:00title of the Dead Zone, but the actual story of a guy I've been
- 38:02able to see people's deaths. I'm pretty sure was a Twilight Zone story.
- 38:07Ah, there we go, yeah, because yeah, Ned's doing the premonitions
- 38:13and like they're all pretty gory and like, yeah, but Hans Molmon getting
- 38:17fed to alligators, You're like, yeah, it's Harns Moulmon. And but
- 38:20then yeah, Hibbitt falling to his death and like with his last move he
- 38:27injects himself with painkillers or something. But then, yeah, Homer's prolonged death
- 38:31as he's also teasing Ned about oh you saw how I'm gonna die Ludardi dar
- 38:39and like slapping the gun, go on, Ned kill me and like just
- 38:44really tempting fate here, and then when it actually does happen, and yeah,
- 38:47Ned is forced to shoot Homer multiple times even though he doesn't want to
- 38:52to stop nuclear annihilation. And then Homer's prolonged death there and then eventual landing
- 38:59of his tongue on the fucking nuke button is still so effective to me,
- 39:04I'm looking up here the Dead Zone. You're right, so it is a
- 39:07parody of the Dead Zone story, But I could have sworn guy I said
- 39:09something about the Twilight Zone episode as well. I mean it probably is as
- 39:13well. The Twilight Zone did a lot of did a lot of it inspired
- 39:16a lot of stories, Yeah, I mean it is so many of the
- 39:20tree House of Horrors as well. Like a few years ago, I ran
- 39:23a Halloween trivia night and then I just did one segment dedicated to only tree
- 39:29House of Horror trivia, and one running gag that I had was, oh,
- 39:34what's this segment about? Parody on? And it was just all the
- 39:36times they did the Twilight Zone, and it was like six of them,
- 39:39Like it's so many, especially in the early days, like you feel like
- 39:44you've watched them. For me, right, I felt like i'd watched The
- 39:46Shining even though I hadn't, because I've seen The Shinning so many times exactly,
- 39:51And you feel like you've seen the Twilight Zone even know you haven't,
- 39:52because you're like, oh, I've seen actually I haven't, but I've seen
- 39:57the Simpsons take it off so many times, and I kind of feel like
- 39:59I have. Yeah, well I remember, because like, yeah, the
- 40:02reason I watched Twilight Zone the movie was on my Patreon page over at patreon
- 40:07dot com. Slash side Quest Studios. Hah, smooth Segway. We have
- 40:10a podcast called Starring Springfield where we review movies that star the cast of The
- 40:15Simpsons, and in the say and yeah, Nancy cart Right is in Twilight
- 40:22Zone the movie. Also we get a little bit of Albert Brooks at the
- 40:23beginning as well. But yeah, Nancy cart Right is in the segment that's
- 40:28actually referenced by the Simpsons in bart Stream from Treehouse of Horror too, where
- 40:32it's you know, the kid with all the powers and you know, mind
- 40:36controls everybody. Yeah. Coincidentally enough, Nancy cart Right is in that segment
- 40:39in the movie, but she's not playing a little boy in this one.
- 40:43She's playing the tortured and tormented sister of Yeah, the little boy with all
- 40:46the powers. It's amazing how many things the Simpsons casts have been in that
- 40:52you just a lot of people have no idea, oh one hundred percent,
- 40:54especially hankers Aria. That's the thing we're discovering from the course of this podcast
- 40:59is that do was working on his backup plan all the while while what's going
- 41:02on, not that he needed one, but just in case, no,
- 41:06absolutely like just such a prolific and such an extended filmography. That dude,
- 41:12it's surprising. Well he was going to be Joey in Friends? Yeah,
- 41:16how about Johnny? Yeah, I'm pretty sure did he get He didn't then
- 41:21get offered the role of Channel. I'm pretty sure offered a role. And
- 41:23then either Matthew Perry or Matt LeBlanc like swooped in under like they go and
- 41:29I actually want this guy instand I'm pretty sure like he was. He almost
- 41:31got the cant right to play one of the boy Phoebe's. Yeah, he
- 41:36gave him the spot. Is Phoebe's boyfriend here, David, I want to
- 41:37say his name is? Which if you actually go back and watch that right,
- 41:40even if you're not a Friends fan, find it's on Netflix here in
- 41:44Australia. Friends and I do the podcast one about Friends with Nikola. It's
- 41:46still one of my favorite stories is his Hekazari story with with Lisa Gudro,
- 41:51Phoebe's character. It's just it's brilliant. I highly recommend anyone going, even
- 41:53if you're not a fan of Friends, go and watch that episode. You'll
- 41:55love it. It's is so fantastic in it. Yeah, I'll have to
- 42:00check it out. Well, maybe i'll review it on that podcast too.
- 42:02Yeah, you honestly, you'll love it. It's so it's it's actually quite
- 42:07sweet and beautiful. Yeah, I want to talk about I think we've both
- 42:12got this. We've touched on this as well in our our preparation. The
- 42:15wood chipper scene from this is a great segment, by the way. I
- 42:20love the idea of these marketing Basically the story is what's the name is it?
- 42:25What's the name of the actual how to get ahead and advertising? Yeah,
- 42:30so basically these advertising companies are hiring Homer to kill celebrities so they can
- 42:34use their image for their marketing campaigns. And yeah, it's it's just for
- 42:37a later for a teen treats of horror. I love it. I thought
- 42:42it was really really good. I hadn't seen it for god knows how long,
- 42:45and but yeah, Crusty being destroyed in that wood chipper. They didn't
- 42:49shy away from it. You're just seeing like being slowly lowered into this aoidenancy.
- 42:53He falls into it, but slowly going into the wood shiper and these
- 42:57body parts that is spewing out the other side. It's just like whoa r
- 43:00most No, this scene makes it look like they were holding back in Fargo,
- 43:04you know, like, yeah, this was really honestly, that's not
- 43:07even a joke, but this, honestly the Crusty woodchi percent. If you've
- 43:09never seen this and you love Gore Man, this is right up your alley.
- 43:13It's just anything where it's like a prolonged when the person knows a knows
- 43:17are about to die and it's just a slow painful death. I mean if
- 43:22everyone wants to go either and their sleep will go quickly. The idea of
- 43:25just a slow, tortuous, painful death, oh no things. Yeah,
- 43:31and it's it's an episode that ages very interestingly as well because it's taking on
- 43:38the story that you know, apparently Disney and Mickey Mouse were like cracking down
- 43:45on daycares and things that were just like painting pictures of their characters or whatever
- 43:50on the walls to just make the kids happy. And it's like, who
- 43:52do you think is making money? Like what why are you going after these
- 43:55people? This is nothing? And yeah, so sim here, Yeah in
- 44:00the daycare, the Krusty's Mob is just basically making people sand Blasty's image off
- 44:06their walls without unless they're gonna pay them. So it's a it's a very
- 44:09interesting thing now that yeah, Simpsons are under the thumb of the mouse.
- 44:13But yeah, is when you go back and watch all the old episodes where
- 44:16they sort of take the piss out Disney and it's like who got the last
- 44:20laugh? Oh in the movie as well, you know, oh, I'm
- 44:22the mask cover in an evil corporation. But yeah, so that the woodship
- 44:29is scene. If you've never seen that when that was from Triosa Horror nineteen,
- 44:31check out that one. But I also wanted to touch on these aren't
- 44:35necessarily gruesome, but the visuals of them always sort of like maybe uncomfortable.
- 44:38There's two of them. It's two choking deaths, right. The first one
- 44:43is Homer suffocating the alien at the end of the et parody in Triosa Horror
- 44:47eighteen, where he just puts the pillow over its mouth and just everyone just
- 44:51watches him suffocated to death. And then there's the millhouse getting choked by I
- 44:55think it's like Lisa's imaginary friend Rachel or something like that. Oh yeah,
- 45:00like a bag over his head and not in the car. Like those visuals
- 45:04just always I just felt very I felt very uncomfortable watching those ones. Just
- 45:07the suffocating of the alien. I was like, ah, I know I
- 45:12can sit there and watch and get shot and exploment into goo that I'm fine
- 45:15with, but just just suffocating him, I'm just like, someone help it.
- 45:20Yeah. No, there's a I think it's season twenty episode as well,
- 45:24where it's a very cute episode where Homer and Ned sort of team up
- 45:29and become bail bondsman and like bringing in people who are trying to skip bail
- 45:32and whatever, and but Homer's method of neutralizing their targets is to, yeah,
- 45:38put a bag over their head and suffocate them. And it's just like,
- 45:42oh, it's it's so horrible, like especially like when you're told from
- 45:45an early age, don't put a bag on your head. You know,
- 45:46it's any kind of like I think, shouldn't this one have a warning at
- 45:50the start? Yeah, you know what, the young boys or girls neutralizing
- 45:54their their siblings by putting a bag over their head. No on, there's
- 45:59this the I don't think you guys have gotten into it yet. It's where
- 46:02Lurline Lumpkin punk comes back to town. I've heard so much about it though,
- 46:07Yeah, yeah, say what you're will about the rest of the episode,
- 46:10but it just has this wild, detached opening segment where it's like it
- 46:16turns out it's Homer's dream, but like he very really yeah, apology so
- 46:23spoiling this fifteen year old episode, but yeah, it's like and hom a
- 46:30very like in a very like real feeling way, like yeah, puts a
- 46:35pillow over Grandpa Simpson's face and like suffocates and kills him. Like it is
- 46:39such a weird choice to open with this in an episode where it just had
- 46:44nothing to do with it and it did nothing for the story. It was
- 46:46almost just like a bit of filler that they just put in just because.
- 46:50And I remember when we were reviewed it, it was like, was this
- 46:52just a treehouse of horror segment that they got mixed in with their regular Simpsons
- 46:55episode? What the hell's going on? They did? They did that once
- 46:59in the in like the earliest seasons, though it wasn't necessarily a death,
- 47:02but it was that parody of like Homer with the Planet of the Doughnuts,
- 47:06remember that one where he's like having a weird which has nothing to do with
- 47:08the episode, but it's just like his random weird dream. Yeah. In
- 47:13the trial and everything as well, it's like eating his counsel. That's so
- 47:16good. Can we also touch on the dolphins because that one, Oh that
- 47:22was good. Yeah, that's that's one of the best ones of all time,
- 47:24I honestly feel, because I just I just loved how brutal these dolphins
- 47:30were. And yeah, dolphins are sort of like the puppy dogs of the
- 47:32sea. We all love dolphins, right, but just seeing them come back
- 47:36to get theirs, it's just like we kind of deserve it. Yeah,
- 47:39not absolutely, like it makes a very solid point very early on how much
- 47:45these animals must hate human interactions, and yeah, like makes a very very
- 47:51good point. And having like Lisa as the one to sort of make it
- 47:54and instigate this whole thing is just makes so much sense for her character.
- 47:59And then yeah, how the dolphins do choose to take revenge, Like they
- 48:02make them such a threat and they make them so evil, like it's a
- 48:08it's a really cool thing they've done, Like, and yeah, from I
- 48:12think the first one is like Lenny's night swimming drunken night swimming where he gets
- 48:15beaten to death. Yeah yeah, and then yeah, the big fight at
- 48:20the end, which the humans end up losing, got it. I remember
- 48:24that one being memorable to me because it was the first time I've ever heard
- 48:28an animated show say the words glory wholeh my god, what hey mam?
- 48:35What's a glory hole? A sneaky Simpsons I know, right, but yeah,
- 48:40so the deaths and nex, there's one where they dolphin goes through one
- 48:45of the characters, right, yeah, that's right, he gets it through
- 48:50the chest. I think that would make the most sense. Yeah. Yeah,
- 48:53but they're slamming comic book Guy's head in the door and there's beaten the
- 48:59ship out of a pool, and yeah, I just thought it was just
- 49:00the idea of the dolphins being these vicious characters. It just always makes it
- 49:04so memorable to me, just stands out. Yeah. Oh, it's like
- 49:07the crusty doll segment as well, there's something very unsettling about Yeah, cute
- 49:12thing goes evil like yeah, and it's a very good concept for a tree
- 49:16House of Horror, so rich for that. Yeah, that's why I say,
- 49:20like, because that's a take off of what is it called Trilogy of
- 49:23Terror, where it's this little doll that comes to life and that's terrifying.
- 49:28But like, I want to compare it to say, the Toy Story segment
- 49:30that we touched on earlier. I remember you. I'm pretty sure you mentioned
- 49:34it in one of your list to me, I'm just like, I watched
- 49:36that segment and funt nothing mm no, just it was so nothing. Nah,
- 49:43that whole tree House of Horror was a bit of a disappointment for me.
- 49:45Like maybe it was one of these things that it was kind of hyped
- 49:49up and a lot of people do favor it and it is why though,
- 49:54well, I mean, I think the most wild fact about it is that
- 49:57it was written by a former Simpsons podcaster in Julie from I can't even remember
- 50:04what their podcast is called anymore. It's been so long Round Springfield, Everything's
- 50:07Coming Up podcast. It changed a few times, but yeah, that,
- 50:12yeah, that toy story segment, Like, and you would have thought it'd
- 50:15be rich for that because yeah, Bart being a good sid cipher from Toy
- 50:19Story, Yeah, torturing the toys and how they take revenge, but yeah,
- 50:23not super effective on the yeah, gore and threaten everything. Yeah,
- 50:28there was no jokes in the entire so I was like, was there a
- 50:31single joke in this? Mmmm? Yeah, besides a rounding Newman parody which
- 50:37would do. It wasn't even funny, and yeah, Bart's sort of being
- 50:42frozen paralytic or whatever, and Marge crying at the end, like it was
- 50:47just yeah, one of those moments where yeah, I was like, oh,
- 50:50that's just sad. I didn't have fun. I didn't get scared.
- 50:54It wasn't like really a horror thing. But yeah, yeah, but no.
- 51:00One thing that did stand out to me in regards to recent Simpsons was
- 51:07the deaths of the Global Warm employees in the Death Note Parrioer that we talked
- 51:10about earlier. First of all, mister Burns getting his face burnt on the
- 51:14on the barbecue horrific. But then there's one where someone gets sucked. Have
- 51:20you seen the segment? Ah? I did, but I was extremely drunk
- 51:23at the time, so I do not memory. Basically, Lisa has she
- 51:27has the death Note the book so she can she writes in the book how
- 51:30someone's gonna die and then they'll die. Yeah, and she's kind of kill
- 51:32off these the employees of mister Burns's business and like one gets like sucked into
- 51:37like the blades the propellers of a is it not propeller? What's it?
- 51:42Is it? Of a? Plane. What is it that? Yeah,
- 51:44I think that's a propeller. Propeller, yeah, anyway of the plane.
- 51:46Just this go in just I'm just like alsa, it's instant, but just
- 51:51a visual to seeing this person go in that side and the other side is
- 51:53just smush, you know. Yeah, they one always just threats to me
- 51:57and just mister Burns just falling over and just your head first. Can you
- 52:01remember that seated where he sort of falls head first and his face lands on
- 52:05this on the barbecue. Oh no, no, I can't. Like I
- 52:08do remember the visuals being particularly striking, because yeah, for anyone that doesn't
- 52:14no Death Note, it's like a Japanese animation and anime a cartoon and Simpsons
- 52:21really go hard in on this style and like it barely resembles a Simpsons episode
- 52:25as well. But yeah, just as far as fluid animation goes, it
- 52:29is sensational. Again from what I remember, because I only like, like
- 52:34we watched it because like a friend of mine who's a massive Debt Note fan,
- 52:37was like, oh my god, you're a Simpsons fan. You still
- 52:38haven't seen this yet. Oh it's so good. I remember being pleased at
- 52:42the time, but I don't remember much else, I'm afraid. Do you
- 52:45find yourself watching the new Simpsons. It's it's hard this year because the last
- 52:50two seasons, we've been able to get them like three days late on Disney
- 52:52Plus. We usually get him on a Wednesday, when the States get him
- 52:54on the Sunday, so Monday I was like two days later. But this
- 52:59season they haven't been putting on Disney Plus yet. It's really bizarre. So
- 53:02VPN and all downloading it and watching it, but I feel like the last
- 53:06two seasons I've been keeping up. I've seen every episode of the last two
- 53:08seasons purely because they've just been easy to access, because for so long I
- 53:12felt like I don't know where to find new Simpsons anymore. This I downloaded
- 53:15it because channels did a pissball job of promoting when they were on and always
- 53:20on one week and they wouldn't be on for another six and they put another
- 53:22one on a different day. And do you find yourself catching up with recent
- 53:25Simpsons? Because I do, But this season's just been very difficult so far.
- 53:30Honestly, since the thirties. That sort of coinciding with yeah, me
- 53:36going full steam ahead on this podcast, my wanting to watch Simpsons outside of
- 53:42the podcast has lessened. It does that to you, doesn't it. It
- 53:45takes your desire to want to watch them just in your own time away,
- 53:49and it's sad. And that's what I said to Nicola recently. I was
- 53:51like, I should just be I used to watch the Simpsons all the time,
- 53:53because she watches Friends all the time. Right, I'm like, and
- 53:57since I started doing this podcast, I think it was a case of I
- 53:59didn't on to I wanted to go in fresh when I went back and revisited
- 54:01an episode and things like that. But it's sad though, because the Simpsons
- 54:06was my was almost like a friend, you know. I watched it all
- 54:08the time. It was my comfort viewing. And the kids they didn't really
- 54:13know what Simpsons was. And I was like, alleasantly five and he's barely
- 54:15seen a Simpsons episode. So now I've started putting them on more and more
- 54:19regularly, and the kids are now asking to watch the Simpsons and I'm just
- 54:22like, oh, okay, we're getting this train bake on track, guys,
- 54:27we're getting there. Well yeah, I mean similarly, for me,
- 54:30it used to be background noise, like sometimes just doing like chores or whatever.
- 54:34Like I would just throw on Simpsons or Futurama just like and not really
- 54:38watch them because like I knew the episodes so well, it just sort of
- 54:42quote along with them as I go. And then yeah, with commentaries as
- 54:45well. Petary's in Bedman every night, just commentaries on yeah, exactly,
- 54:49Like it's funny because yeah, they were like pretty much my segue into podcasting
- 54:53and getting into that, Like I truly believe, because yeah, I could
- 54:57stick the commentaries on do the dishes or whatever, not even look at the
- 55:00TV and know exactly where in the episode they were, because yeah, especially
- 55:05in those first fifteen seasons, I can recreate the episodes with my eyes closed,
- 55:09I bet. And yeah, that's sort of one of the things that
- 55:13like the caveats that I will say with the newer ones as well, is
- 55:15that we don't exactly have that repetition anymore. And because there's so much stuff
- 55:20out there, like you desire to watch the same thing that you might not
- 55:23have enjoyed the first time. Definitely, Yeah, there's so many many other
- 55:29things to go out there. Why would I want to, you know,
- 55:31try watching the same episode of The Simpsons three times? Like, and I
- 55:37will say that yeah, some of those episodes do improve on the second watch
- 55:39as well. Like, but yeah, as far as watching new Simpsons,
- 55:45like especially lately more in the last year, not so recently, but there
- 55:51has been a lot of you know, is Simpson's good again sort of post
- 55:53going round and sort of episodes that they mentioned as evidence of this, and
- 55:59like I can interrupt, FYI, straight from the horse's mouth of the guy
- 56:04who runs the show, is incredibly fucking offensive. Yeah, your videos and
- 56:08your things saying you think you're giving the Simpsons credit by saying they're actually kind
- 56:14of good again. What you're saying in saying that is they weren't good for
- 56:19so long and now are they good again? Maybe, Like I just the
- 56:22people behind the show just find that incredibly offensive. Just wanted to throw that
- 56:25out there. Yeah, well, I mean that's why I sort of said
- 56:29it in quotes then as well, because I feel like these articles are more
- 56:32like trying to generate clickbait and like headlines and sort of clickable content. You
- 56:37know, what I think I try to do with their Facebook page is that
- 56:39I try to make it people realize that we're not just like a page just
- 56:43post Simpsons memes where run by a guy who loves the Simpsons, and like,
- 56:46I put up a photo recently of all my Simpsons vhs that I had
- 56:50when I was a kid, and I've surprisingly everyone got confused, IM like,
- 56:52we didn't have DVDs in the nineties, and I was like, they're
- 56:54videotapes. No, they're not the DVD's. I'm like, how soon we
- 57:00forget? I'm like, what, look at the picture. Yeah, they're
- 57:04too thin to be video tastes like mad woman. Yeah, argue with me
- 57:09the person who owned them? What? Yeah? And I had got to
- 57:14the point where I had to put a video of me filming them, and
- 57:16still some guys were just like, nah, still looks doesn't look legit to
- 57:20me. I'm like whatever, but I try to make fourfing a discount be
- 57:24a page that's clearly run by a Simpsons fan, not to someone who's just
- 57:28trying to like you're saying capitalize on the title of is the Simpsons good again?
- 57:31Or just just you know, you get your websites like, I'm sure
- 57:35there's people are cracked and things like that who love the Simpsons, but they
- 57:37just love their fucking top ten this and Top ten that thirty six times Homer
- 57:42was a good father and that kind of thing, you know. Yeah,
- 57:45But I mean, I will say objectively, I think since season thirty one
- 57:50there has been a market improvement in the show, and it just feels like
- 57:53there has been a bit a lot more effort into creating proper stories and like
- 58:00really accentuating the flow and not just making like a random assortment of shit happening.
- 58:06I can tell you why off the air ahlusive exclusive, but yeah,
- 58:14especially in the tree House of Horrors, which I think are the ones that
- 58:17do get shared, because I mean especially I think it was last year or
- 58:21the year before they did an entire it parody for an entire episode that was
- 58:24sort of separate from a Treehouse of Horror, And Halloween of Horror is another
- 58:28one, which is fantastic, fucking excellent episode of the best episodes honestly of
- 58:31the last fifteen years. Yeah, honestly, Like, yeah, Halloween of
- 58:36Horror is just such an achievement. I think, like it almost makes me
- 58:40sad that they didn't try and go for a non Treehouse Halloween episode again.
- 58:45But then also at the same time, I really liked what they did there,
- 58:49so like I don't bemoan them for not like that's the one time.
- 58:52And that was written by Carolyn Amine, who's coming on the show in the
- 58:54weekly right. Also she wrote the latest episode mid Childhood Night's Dream. I
- 59:01am not exaggerating everybody. When that episode finished, I groped my heart and
- 59:06cried, and I have not cried at a Simpsons episode. Last my c
- 59:12SIMS episode was when I rewatched and Making Makes three after having Holly, and
- 59:16it was like, you know, I wasn't after It was actually like a
- 59:20year ago because I quit my job at my previous employer and I took a
- 59:24chance on myself to try to try this podcast thing, and you know,
- 59:29sort of a bit sort of scared, and it's just the fear that goes
- 59:30into that of a wanted to take a chance on yourself, but b what
- 59:34am we going to do if it fails? Right? And luckily I had
- 59:36Nicola to back me up. She's kicking goals at her job and things like
- 59:37that, and it's paid off with the podcast thing, and but just seeing
- 59:42that, you know, he does everything for his daughter, and I'm just
- 59:45like, oh, like when we become a father, that that ending just
- 59:47hits you so hard. But honestly, the end of this latest episode and
- 59:51mid Childhood Night's Dream unbelievable. So basically it's a take, it's not taken,
- 59:55but the story is that Marge is fearing that her kids are growing up
- 1:00:00and they're not her little babies anymore. And there's one scene where like Marge
- 1:00:06grabs Bart's hand because he's heard it or whatever. She goes, when did
- 1:00:08your hands get so big? He's like, I don't know. She's like,
- 1:00:10I guess I just don't hold hands all that often anymore. And then
- 1:00:15there's something that happens at the end. Oh my god. Man, if
- 1:00:17you can get access to that episode and you haven't watched it yet, do
- 1:00:21so. It is unbelievable. And Carolyn wrote that episode as well. So
- 1:00:23we're gonna be doing a deep dive on that episode because there's a really lovely
- 1:00:27story behind it. Oh wonderful. Yeah, I'm really looking forward to that.
- 1:00:30Yeah, it's the parts that I do, like, yeah, feel
- 1:00:35so good when Yeah, Simpsons do really show that they are still trying in
- 1:00:38these days and like do sort of those stories that really delve deep into those
- 1:00:43concepts And yeah, that and Halloween of Horror, the idea that Yeah,
- 1:00:46Lisa being scared and Homer having to comfort that is while also being scared himself.
- 1:00:52These are being scared as well, having to admit to his kid that
- 1:00:54he's scared. Yeah. Yeah, just such real shit that, Yeah,
- 1:01:00that just happens to come through the cipher of these yellow cartoon characters. Yeah,
- 1:01:06And I know it's patronizing to sort of say it feels like they're trying
- 1:01:08more now, but it really, it just does. It felt like for
- 1:01:10a while there that they were just making shows, where here it feels like
- 1:01:15they're treating it just I know that's not what happened, but it just comes
- 1:01:20across now that each episode they've put just so much more thought into it,
- 1:01:24and there's a real love and passion behind the show. Again, And honestly,
- 1:01:28if you haven't watched the last couple of seasons, do it, because
- 1:01:30there are way more good episodes they're not in the recent seasons. Yeah,
- 1:01:36and from what I've understood as well, they've brought in some newer, fresher
- 1:01:39riders into the team as well, and I think that'd yeah, just rejuvenated
- 1:01:44the show quite a bit. Yease. Speaking of a new passions that seems
- 1:01:50to be coming through with the Simpsons is the Trance of Horror. Last year
- 1:01:53thirty three, So last year it was the year before it was. Last
- 1:01:58year wasn't thirty three, it was last year. It was the one Simpsons
- 1:02:00World that written by Matt Salomon. Have you seen Simpsons World? I don't
- 1:02:04think so. You haven't seen Simpsons World? Wow? We So basically it's
- 1:02:08a take off of West World and it's people. There's a theme park that's
- 1:02:14all of the classic Simpsons moments that people can go and relive their classic Simpsons
- 1:02:16moments but be like they're all animatronic Simpsons. It's so fucking good. But
- 1:02:22it's just filled with like hundreds of classic Simpsons references. Like it starts off
- 1:02:25with them being on the monorail and things like that, and there's all these
- 1:02:29little like Easter eggs in there. But Matt Summer message mean, he was
- 1:02:32like, hey, do you know you're in the latest Simpsons episode. And
- 1:02:35I was like what, You're like, yeah, yeah, it's like you're
- 1:02:37gonna really lit the lates Simpsons episode. And I'm like why and he's like,
- 1:02:39I know, just check it out. I'm like okay. And in
- 1:02:44the episode there's two Aussie super fans who who have gone to Simpsons World And
- 1:02:50he was like, you know, because of you guys down there, four
- 1:02:52figure discount inspired us to do this bit. And I was like, cool,
- 1:02:57Oh that's amazing. Oh that's awesome, well done. Yeah yeah,
- 1:03:00So check out Simpsons Well because if you haven't checked that one out, it's
- 1:03:02just a love letter to classic Simpsons. I can't believe you haven't seen Simpsons
- 1:03:06World. Who. I did a whole video on YouTube about all the references
- 1:03:08in the in the segment, it's it's it's honestly one of my favorite Treets
- 1:03:13of Horrors of all time segments. Oh awesome, Well, yeah, that's
- 1:03:15my afternoon sorted. Check out six as well. You'll really really enjoy it.
- 1:03:20But one more death that I wanted to touch on, and it comes
- 1:03:22from my favorite Treots of Horror segment of all time. I know, and
- 1:03:27it's not part of Trees of Horror six as a trilogy. Tree of Horror
- 1:03:30six is my favorite, but this is my favorite Tres of Horror segment of
- 1:03:32all time, and it's one you've already touched on. It's not me a
- 1:03:35cafeteria. I always wanted to touch on poor little Millhouse falling into the blender.
- 1:03:39My god, Like, what a visual the moment where we were like,
- 1:03:45oh, how are the Simpsons kids gonna get out of this whacky adventure?
- 1:03:50Oh they might not. Yeah, oh shit, I'm sure nothing will
- 1:03:57happen to the Simpsons children. And I thought they did that scene so well,
- 1:04:02particularly Milhouse's death right they left it to the very last second before they
- 1:04:05cut away, where for some reason, they did it so well that in
- 1:04:09my brain you did see him get destroyed. You're like, oh, yeah,
- 1:04:14that time you see Milhouse fall to the blender, we don't really see
- 1:04:15him get killed, but they do not say well that you almost feel like
- 1:04:18you do. Oh absolutely, Like just the way that they drew the fear
- 1:04:24on Millhouse's face, and like doing it for like again using the animation techniques
- 1:04:29that they had when they, especially compared today, had such a limited palette
- 1:04:32of yeah, making the choices of to shoot it from the perspective of the
- 1:04:36blender and making it look huge and making those blender blades look massive, and
- 1:04:41then yeah, having Millhouse coming forward and falling into it like that is really
- 1:04:45affecting shit. And because it is the idea of falling to my death just
- 1:04:49terrifies me. But knowing it to fall into a blender, would you rather
- 1:04:53go feet first or headfirst into a blender? I don't know, Man,
- 1:04:58it looks like it's all over with pretty qu quickly, and I'm sure that
- 1:05:01even a half a second difference of getting minced in a blender. Yeah,
- 1:05:05I think I'd rather go ahead first if it saved myself even a half a
- 1:05:09second of torturous spain. But I wonder if you didn't feel it, you
- 1:05:13probably would for for if his feet first, you probably would feel it for
- 1:05:15a second. Right, Yeah, I know when they were talking about the
- 1:05:17whole when they're sub imploded earlier this year, they were like, they wouldn't
- 1:05:20have felt anything. It would have gone there and then they weren't so quick.
- 1:05:25But I feel if you're falling into a blender, you're feeling that shit
- 1:05:28for a bit first, right, I reckon? So maybe your body does
- 1:05:30something with adrenaline and shock, but I don't know. It also makes me
- 1:05:33think of that South Park bit with that teacher who goes to commit suicide and
- 1:05:38the band saw and first goes, oh god, that's terrible. First,
- 1:05:43that would like, yeah, we review that for going down to southwik If
- 1:05:48you're a fan of south check out my South Park podcast, Golden Down to
- 1:05:53South Park, available for free wherever you find your podcast, Spotify and all
- 1:05:57that, and you get exclusive skip Aheaded reviews on our Patreon channel, where
- 1:06:00we have just reviewed Scott Tenneman Must Die. Oh a classic, bona fide
- 1:06:05classic, that one. It's arguably the best episode ever. It's sort of
- 1:06:10like the episode that sort of the better episodes. So there are better episodes,
- 1:06:14but they wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Scott Tenemon Must Die.
- 1:06:15That was where they realized, oh shit, we can actually run wild with
- 1:06:18this show. If people are willing to buy that Cartman is capable of this,
- 1:06:23then then they'll buy anything. Yeah, and especially to get Radiohead on
- 1:06:28board is just so inherently funny cancer of the ass, like, because I'm
- 1:06:33pretty sure they refuse Simpsons at one point as well, Like I think I
- 1:06:36were one of the very few people like Pearl Jam who have actually refused being
- 1:06:41a guest star on the Simpsons. But Sting was meant to be Bruce Springsteen.
- 1:06:45Oh really in the Radio Barred episode. Yeah, it was originally going
- 1:06:49to be Bruce Springsteen. He turned them down, so they got Sting instead.
- 1:06:51It turned out even better because Sting used to be he's a dig holes
- 1:06:55for a living. Oh is that right? Oh there we go. Yeah,
- 1:07:00in training for the role then he had been indeed, yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:02home. Is that all the gruesome deaths we're going to talk about here
- 1:07:04today? Is any more? You want to flick over before me? I
- 1:07:08will got this episode of four Thing of Discount extra. Yeah, I will
- 1:07:10throw one quick honorable mention to don't have a cow mankind. I didn't pick
- 1:07:15it for like the original list because like there isn't one sort of death that
- 1:07:19sticks out into it. So basically what it is, it's a parody of
- 1:07:23twenty eight Days Later where Camp Brockman Zombie one. Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:27Camp Brockman. It's a tainted krusty burger. I think it was the
- 1:07:30burger was like cow squared or something that it was made from cow fed cow
- 1:07:34and cow sed cow. Yeah that's what it was, and yeah that's how
- 1:07:36they made it. So yeah, it's from Treehouse of Treehouse of Ora twenty
- 1:07:41from season twenty one, and yeah, it's just a really well done segment.
- 1:07:45Like the whole thing has like a different color template to it, where
- 1:07:49it's a lot more gray and really moody. And yeah, the zombies in
- 1:07:54this one so much more visceral and vicious, Like this is one of the
- 1:07:59benefits of HD era of the Simpsons that, yeah, they can indulge some
- 1:08:03of these more animation choices, whereas the zombies in the I think it was
- 1:08:09the season four Treehouse of Horror or whatever it was Darzy for Zombies. Darzy
- 1:08:13for Zombies was three three. Yeah, Yeah, that's right. Yeah,
- 1:08:16so that one was a bit more cartoony and just a bit more sort of
- 1:08:20they just take a bite and chunk out of like this one, Like,
- 1:08:24yeah, there's a lot more frames per second, so there's a lot more
- 1:08:27done in the animation, and they're right, a lot more frothy zombies,
- 1:08:30like they're a lot more like people turned mad rather than a zombie sort of
- 1:08:35archetype sort of thing. Yeah, so I really love that segment. And
- 1:08:39yeah, Appo driving that giant truck with the cowcatcher on front. Yeah,
- 1:08:44there's some really good shit there. You're supposed to wait for me at the
- 1:08:46bottom. Yeah, I can't believe we've missed one. When that we both
- 1:08:53discussed in prep for this episode. Oh, what's that scho Bob killing Bart?
- 1:08:59Ah, Yeah, it's because I hate this segment. It was on
- 1:09:01the level of Homer eating himself in a sense that it wasn't necessarily gory,
- 1:09:05but just really uncomfortable. Yeah. Look, because you have to take it
- 1:09:10with the context of the whole story of Sideshow Bob wanting to kill Bart.
- 1:09:15I guess my problem with this is it's just kind of kind of the Scratchy
- 1:09:19finally gets itchy sort of thing, where like, yeah, the joke where
- 1:09:23they had that in an episode was just yeah that we didn't get to see
- 1:09:27it, and I don't know that we got to see it, and we
- 1:09:30got to see side show Bob catch Bart so much it was it lacked any
- 1:09:33sort of sense of satisfaction within that story and just being like yeah, fanfic
- 1:09:39and like, yeah, just really boring. Again, it harkens back to
- 1:09:42a different Itchy and Scratchy carto in the one where he's like cloning all the
- 1:09:45scratches and then killing them and sending them straight to the killing machine. Yeah
- 1:09:49and yeah, so without the context of the whole side Show Bob story,
- 1:09:54it's just watching an adult kill a child. Over and over again. I
- 1:09:57did like the line of I've spent twenty four years trying to to kill a
- 1:10:00ten year old boy or something like that. But yeah, it's I remember
- 1:10:03being really excited for that one too. I remember feeling like, oh,
- 1:10:06this is gonna be an awesome he finally kills but it feels like not on
- 1:10:10the same level. But it kind of gave me the feeling of, like
- 1:10:12Barton Lisa was, this is whe where Itchy Scruthy finally gets itchy. Yeah,
- 1:10:15it's like it's finally gonna happen, and then when you get it,
- 1:10:16you're like, uh, yeah, maybe we shouldn't have got it. Yeah,
- 1:10:25this is this isn't fun for anybody, but anyway, No, it
- 1:10:28has been fun talking to you, sir. Yes, no, this has
- 1:10:30been a great little session checking out some of our most gruesome moments from the
- 1:10:35Treehouse of Horrors. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, I'm going have to have
- 1:10:39you on more regularly. Could we do another Halloween themed one? Do you
- 1:10:41think? I mean, this is the Halloween season. What would be another
- 1:10:44Halloween themed one? Though we talked about the gory deaths that's sort of like
- 1:10:45the The Key of Trees isn't it that the gory deaths? Yeah, I
- 1:10:50suppose so. I mean they do a lot of parodies in this one as
- 1:10:55well, so like maybe their best parodies or h right in listeners Simpsons Mailbag
- 1:11:00at gmail dot com and offer some suggestions for Ali and I to cover future
- 1:11:03topics. That doesn't have to be Halloween ones, just future episodes. We'd
- 1:11:05love to hear what topics you'd like us to cover here on four finger Discount.
- 1:11:11Yeah. I mean been studying Simpsons my whole life, and been studying
- 1:11:15it very heavily for the last seven years doing the Simpsons Index. So yeah,
- 1:11:18I feel like between us we've got a fair amount of Simpsons knowledge that
- 1:11:21we'd be happy to take on any topic you throw at us, just in
- 1:11:26case there's anybody out there who doesn't know what Elliott does. When you mentioned
- 1:11:28the Simpsons Index, you want to just give us the shill, give us
- 1:11:30the spiel. Yeah, yeah, so yeah, I'm a host of the
- 1:11:33Simpsons Index. We have different guests on every week to talk about various Simpsons
- 1:11:39episodes. We used to review three at a time, but we caught up
- 1:11:43to the series. So yeah, we've reviewed the first nineteen seasons of the
- 1:11:45show and most of the rest of them. And so yeah, now we're
- 1:11:48reviewing one episode at a time again, Yeah, different guests every week.
- 1:11:53And yeah, we've actually reviewed the first thirty two Treehouse of Horrors, so
- 1:11:59yeah, you're have to wait until we review the next thirty two tree House
- 1:12:01of Horrors. But yeah, go check them out the Simpsons index dot com.
- 1:12:04It's a great time. Make sure you do that. I'll put the
- 1:12:06link for that in the description of this pob. Like I said, guys,
- 1:12:10Simpsons mailbag at gmail dot com, let us know some future topics for
- 1:12:14us to cover here on fourfing a discount extra because each week we're gonna be
- 1:12:15discussing something Simpsons based. And like I was saying to you off air the
- 1:12:20other day, it's like I thought I was getting bored of reviewing episodes of
- 1:12:24The Simpsons season eighteen, but it's just like people aren't as interested in season
- 1:12:27eighteen episodes as they are at the Golden era. So it's like and the
- 1:12:30reason I started this podcast was to capture the vibe of being of ANUE mates
- 1:12:34and talking what it was like being drawing up in the nineties and talking about
- 1:12:38the Simpsons when it was the biggest show on television. The excitement of talking
- 1:12:40about the Simpsons. I wanted to recapture that and find light minded Simpsons fans,
- 1:12:44which is what I'm trying to do here with Fourthing Discount Extra is just
- 1:12:46recapture that that excitement of just talking about your love of the show. You
- 1:12:50know, yeah, absolutely, because that you know, Simpsons quotes and sattings
- 1:12:57and everything that was like currency on the play. You know, we traded
- 1:13:00in those sayings and quotes and everything, and like, yeah, it's built
- 1:13:05a language, and I think it's got a unique fandom in Australia as well.
- 1:13:11And I love like because yeah, like I said, I got rotating
- 1:13:13guests on my show as well. It's like and often it's the first time
- 1:13:16I'm meeting these people on the podcast, and it's like having this common ground
- 1:13:20is just so lovely to yeah, kick off wonderful friendships like this inde.
- 1:13:25So make sure you check out the Simpsons index. Like I said, link
- 1:13:27is in the description of this pub But thank you guys for checking out this
