- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcoming to Jags am training camp continues. They're getting ready
- 0:20Speaker 1: to get things going out there as we have a
- 0:23Speaker 1: preseason game to talk about, but camp continues throughout the
- 0:26Speaker 1: week as well. Welcome in. I'm ka Nannie Stevens, JP
- 0:29Speaker 1: Shaddrick joining us today and for Brian Sex and John
- 0:31Speaker 1: Oger is here as well. And for the first time
- 0:33Speaker 1: in about seven months, we can talk about a Jaguars
- 0:36Speaker 1: football game. Yes, preseason, but still exciting. So let's go
- 0:39Speaker 1: over some of our big things, brought to you by
- 0:40Speaker 1: g e H a Government Employee Health Association. Big Thing
- 0:44Speaker 1: number one is the first look, obviously the story of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the off season, the addition of Travis Hunter the wide
- 0:48Speaker 1: receiver and Travis Hunter the cornerback. We got to see
- 0:50Speaker 1: you in action on both sides of the football on
- 0:53Speaker 1: Saturday night, and Meam Cohen talked a little bit postgame
- 0:56Speaker 1: about what he saw from his rookie.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Made a couple of good catches on some option rounds
- 1:00Speaker 2: and you know, miss the one tackle defensively that I noticed,
- 1:05Speaker 2: Like that was the only things that I, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 2: kind of noticed about his overall play In terms of that.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I'll have to watch the tape on how he operated
- 1:13Speaker 2: defensively a little bit more, but I thought offensively made
- 1:16Speaker 2: the right decisions on those option routes, made a good catch,
- 1:19Speaker 2: almost broke out of that one where kind of Trevor
- 1:22Speaker 2: put it behind him on that third down we talked about.
- 1:24Speaker 2: But you know, I'll have to go watch the tape
- 1:26Speaker 2: a little bit more to know more.
- 1:30Speaker 1: JP not a ton of action, but about ten plays
- 1:33Speaker 1: on offense eight plays on defense. Is going to be
- 1:36Speaker 1: doing both of this throughout the regular season. What do
- 1:38Speaker 1: you think of the first time he saw Travis ton
- 1:39Speaker 1: of out.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's the first look, so at least
- 1:41Speaker 3: you get to see him out there. Until for the
- 1:43Speaker 3: first time fans got to see him on the field
- 1:46Speaker 3: doing a few things and as Liam Cohen said, there
- 1:49Speaker 3: a couple of catches. He had another catch as well,
- 1:51Speaker 3: it was negated by penalty, and then the mistackle running
- 1:55Speaker 3: back goes wide on him, tried to trip him up.
- 1:57Speaker 3: You know, not much in the passing game for him
- 2:00Speaker 3: was out there, but hey, a good start, and this
- 2:03Speaker 3: is a guy you're gonna have to say, WHOA instead
- 2:06Speaker 3: of giving up. This is up to the coaches, I
- 2:07Speaker 3: think KAI to really continue to manage what his workload
- 2:12Speaker 3: is moving ahead.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and look at the screen right now.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Everybody they're practicing and they're passing training camp.
- 2:18Speaker 4: That's basically what the other night was JP and Kai.
- 2:22Speaker 5: I almost wish they wouldn't televise these preseason games or
- 2:27Speaker 5: even call them games, because I get that everybody wants
- 2:31Speaker 5: to analyze, and you know, I saw some stuff on
- 2:33Speaker 5: social media which shouldn't even look at Travis Hunter didn't
- 2:36Speaker 5: do this, and he didn't do this. He played one
- 2:38Speaker 5: series on each side of the ball, basically two on defense,
- 2:40Speaker 5: because to get me eight plays, that's the whole team.
- 2:44Speaker 5: This was a first look. It's a very well titled segment.
- 2:49Speaker 5: We've got it's a first look. I thought Travis looked fine,
- 2:52Speaker 5: he looked quick, he got his feet wet a little bit.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Guess what, he's probably gonna play more than one series
- 2:58Speaker 5: in the regular season. Get a better chance, Dan or
- 3:01Speaker 5: as this kid going forward.
- 3:02Speaker 4: But it was fine.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I think that's a fair guest probably playing ranting. It's okay.
- 3:06Speaker 1: We love a John Oser rant. Big thing never do
- 3:08Speaker 1: is short and sweet. As we mentioned, we didn't see
- 3:10Speaker 1: a ton of the starters. The offense. We only saw
- 3:12Speaker 1: on one drive and Trevor Lawrence went six for seven,
- 3:16Speaker 1: not too bad, but they got points out of it,
- 3:18Speaker 1: no touchdown. But in terms of getting ready for the season,
- 3:22Speaker 1: Coan felt like he saw what he needed to in
- 3:23Speaker 1: the limited time to Trevor Lawns.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I think aside from the first play in terms
- 3:28Speaker 2: of I think he just was at the line with
- 3:30Speaker 2: a can and kind of just took a little long
- 3:32Speaker 2: and it got us a little jumpy. But I thought,
- 3:36Speaker 2: aside from that, well, you look at getting through some progressions.
- 3:41Speaker 2: He got back to Strange on a progression for a
- 3:43Speaker 2: first down. That was really nice to see. I thought
- 3:46Speaker 2: we protected Trevor pretty well.
- 3:49Speaker 4: You know.
- 3:49Speaker 6: I thought he was accurate with the ball.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You know, safety made a good drive on BT on
- 3:55Speaker 2: that one inbreaker, but the ball was kind of where
- 3:57Speaker 2: it needed to be, maybe.
- 3:57Speaker 6: A little bit more firm for him, but I thought
- 4:00Speaker 6: he operated a good click.
- 4:03Speaker 1: John. We're gonna talk a little bit more in depth
- 4:04Speaker 1: about Trevor later on in the show. But did you
- 4:06Speaker 1: see enough from the starters in this game or are
- 4:08Speaker 1: you not a big preseason guy?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Oh no, I'm not a big preseason guy guy.
- 4:12Speaker 5: I mean, look, you look for things that showed a
- 4:17Speaker 5: little progress, and you try not to panic over the
- 4:19Speaker 5: little things because think about it, if that was a
- 4:21Speaker 5: game the other night, the starters leave down seven to
- 4:24Speaker 5: three and you've got what fifty two minutes left, So
- 4:28Speaker 5: all the adjustments to use the MAK, all the game
- 4:30Speaker 5: planning never happened. So everybody wants to analyze this. I
- 4:35Speaker 5: think JP with Liam what's interesting. I'm gonna get into
- 4:38Speaker 5: Trevor a little later. If you listen to Liam when
- 4:41Speaker 5: he speaks, you're gonna know how he feels, and he's
- 4:45Speaker 5: gonna be honest either way.
- 4:48Speaker 4: He was very willing.
- 4:49Speaker 5: To say, guy, Trevor made the mistake on the first play,
- 4:52Speaker 5: but then he got into more and more.
- 4:54Speaker 4: They liked what they saw.
- 4:55Speaker 5: He was accurate, he was calling there was nothing wrong
- 4:57Speaker 5: with that first drive. Penalties took them out of his
- 5:00Speaker 5: situation to get a touchdown. I was fine with Trevor
- 5:04Speaker 5: in the first team offense, and then they left the game,
- 5:07Speaker 5: so it's okay.
- 5:08Speaker 3: But I mean, the one thing that you really don't
- 5:12Speaker 3: want to see in a preseason game is Trevor Lawrence
- 5:15Speaker 3: having to run with the football. When we ran right
- 5:18Speaker 3: up the middle, he's tackled. Go ahead first it's like, Oh,
- 5:22Speaker 3: put some bubble wrap on this guy. That was the
- 5:25Speaker 3: one thing John, I think you're spot on with everything else.
- 5:28Speaker 3: The passing game was there, got it out on time
- 5:30Speaker 3: for the most part, protected well, and checked the box
- 5:35Speaker 3: onto the next Let's improve it if they get out
- 5:37Speaker 3: there in the preseason. Let's see how how much deeper
- 5:40Speaker 3: into a game they get. Guy.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Everybody came out healthy, and that's the most important part
- 5:44Speaker 1: of the preseason. Our final big thing going to be
- 5:47Speaker 1: one of the highlights for me, at least from a
- 5:49Speaker 1: preseason matchup. That's for sure. Cam Little with a seventy
- 5:52Speaker 1: yard field goal doesn't count because this preseason, unfortunately, their
- 5:56Speaker 1: NFL record is sixty six yards. I think we've seen
- 6:00Speaker 1: it before. But Cam talked a little bit about the kick.
- 6:03Speaker 4: I it was kind of me and Logan were like,
- 6:05Speaker 4: we want to kick it. We want to kick it.
- 6:06Speaker 5: And so when he gave me the opportunity to, obviously,
- 6:09Speaker 5: you know, you go out there and you want to
- 6:11Speaker 5: at least make sure you get there and make sure
- 6:12Speaker 5: it's not okay, Well, we're not gonna.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Throw them back out there for another deep Deilger like that.
- 6:15Speaker 3: But we went out there and adrenaline is a beautiful thing.
- 6:19Speaker 4: But yeah, we went out there at the kid friend.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I say, we've seen it before from Cam Little in practice.
- 6:25Speaker 1: He does this on the regular obviously not in an
- 6:27Speaker 1: actual game, but still pretty cool to see.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, big leg, we've known it coming in.
- 6:32Speaker 3: He had some big kicks last year for this team
- 6:35Speaker 3: from distance. And he even said this after the game too,
- 6:38Speaker 3: that you know, he's willing to bet that somebody in
- 6:41Speaker 3: the league is going to make a seventy plus yarder
- 6:43Speaker 3: this year. It's just the way it's going to go.
- 6:44Speaker 3: It's trending that way. There was a rule change in
- 6:47Speaker 3: this offseason as well. They can work on kicking balls,
- 6:50Speaker 3: the k balls throughout the week now, not just sixty
- 6:53Speaker 3: minutes before the game. How that affects kickers? John, As
- 6:56Speaker 3: we move along here, it can only help them, I
- 6:58Speaker 3: think with distance inaccuracy, this.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Was almost Bob beemanesque, and he was a long jumper
- 7:06Speaker 5: in the sixties who shattered the long jump record and
- 7:09Speaker 5: it didn't get broken for years after that.
- 7:12Speaker 4: It was really an outlier.
- 7:14Speaker 5: This seemed like an outlier statistically adding four yards to
- 7:17Speaker 5: the record, which it would have been had accounted is
- 7:20Speaker 5: usually that thing has inched up over the years. But
- 7:23Speaker 5: I think Cam's right when you watch these guys warm up,
- 7:27Speaker 5: somebody will kick seventy this year. As long as the
- 7:30Speaker 5: as long as the situations. You never see it except
- 7:34Speaker 5: the end of the half or the end of the game,
- 7:35Speaker 5: because if you miss it gives the other team too
- 7:37Speaker 5: good a field position. But if circumstances allow it. The
- 7:43Speaker 5: guy from Dallas, Cam, he sort of downplayed it a
- 7:47Speaker 5: little bit, knowing the other kickers might be watching the
- 7:49Speaker 5: video because he knows there's seven or eight guys out
- 7:51Speaker 5: there who can do this. But he was first, and
- 7:54Speaker 5: seventy is different than sixty eight or sixty nine, right,
- 7:58Speaker 5: Like seventy is that Oh goodness.
- 8:00Speaker 3: It's the four minute mile. Yes, it's that whole thing.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah, And he could have been good from seventy three
- 8:05Speaker 1: or so, saying it didn't just each over. It could
- 8:07Speaker 1: have been farther from that. Even stay with you here on Jagzam.
- 8:09Speaker 1: We're gonna look at the tape from Saturday night when
- 8:11Speaker 1: we come back.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Ultimately, it's it's something that takes no talent to do,
- 8:28Speaker 2: and you know, we we can't beat anybody. This is
- 8:32Speaker 2: something we've been preaching for a long time since we
- 8:35Speaker 2: arrived was we cannot start to beat people until we
- 8:38Speaker 2: stopped beating ourselves, and that has remained pretty consistent since
- 8:44Speaker 2: February or wherever it's been.
- 8:46Speaker 6: So, yeah, frustrating for sure.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Welcome back into Jagsam. That's the name Colin talking post
- 8:53Speaker 1: game after the scrimmage, not scrimmage, preseason game called scrimm,
- 8:58Speaker 1: let's not ever say it. Yeah, So there's not a
- 9:00Speaker 1: ton of things you can always take away from the preseason.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Penalties is probably one of them, though you do not
- 9:04Speaker 1: want to see that, and unfortunately he saw a lot
- 9:06Speaker 1: of them right out of the gate with the starters
- 9:08Speaker 1: in there. So some frustration from first time head coach
- 9:10Speaker 1: Liam Cohen because, as you mentioned, doesn't take any talent
- 9:13Speaker 1: to not break the rules.
- 9:15Speaker 3: We'll start on the first play, that'll wake you up.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Yeah, not great.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Yeah, to put him in a hole. But yeah, I
- 9:21Speaker 5: thought the fact they overcame that I was fine with
- 9:25Speaker 5: the first team offense. I sort of responded in one
- 9:28Speaker 5: series of forty four yard drive.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I think it was.
- 9:33Speaker 5: My guess is that Liam had to sort of stop
- 9:37Speaker 5: himself from putting him back in like he sort of
- 9:39Speaker 5: had to remind himself, Okay, I'm the head coach.
- 9:41Speaker 4: I've got to look at big picture.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Being an offensive guy, I'm sure he sort of wanted
- 9:46Speaker 5: to play with that toy for a little uh, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 5: for two or three more series. So credit to him
- 9:50Speaker 5: for sort of saying, okay, and then even telling Travis
- 9:53Speaker 5: Hunter of Ashton, if you go back in now, we
- 9:55Speaker 5: have a plan for tonight, and.
- 9:57Speaker 4: That was the plan.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Temperate a little bit. Let's take a look at that
- 10:00Speaker 1: first drive, the only drive from the offense, because at
- 10:03Speaker 1: first it looked like it was gonna be quite short.
- 10:05Speaker 1: They went forward on fourth down, Diamy Brown laying out
- 10:08Speaker 1: cornerback before he got picked up there. That was pretty impressive.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Didn't know he had that in him, And nice to
- 10:13Speaker 1: see kind of a different fourth down play or you know,
- 10:17Speaker 1: some of the obviously play calling now in different hands,
- 10:20Speaker 1: it's gonna look different. But it was interesting to see
- 10:23Speaker 1: some of the stuff. Obviously Travis Hunter getting involved. He
- 10:26Speaker 1: had two catches on offense. One of them got called
- 10:29Speaker 1: back again because the penalties right there, and that kind
- 10:33Speaker 1: of hurt them in the end. Obviously they went for
- 10:34Speaker 1: a field goal at the end of this, but they
- 10:35Speaker 1: couldn't get the first down, and he'll pick some of
- 10:38Speaker 1: the stuff up. He doesn't look bad. It's just as
- 10:40Speaker 1: we mentioned women at sample sas.
- 10:42Speaker 5: He had two catches, if they do that six times
- 10:47Speaker 5: during the game, he's gonna break one up the right.
- 10:50Speaker 4: So that's what he's gonna be.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I don't know that he's gonna be a lot of
- 10:53Speaker 5: catches eighteen nineteen yards down field cross.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Maybe he will, but it's.
- 10:58Speaker 5: The fear of him that he gonna have to deal
- 11:00Speaker 5: if he breaks away from that lookout.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And we saw a little bit on those highlights of
- 11:05Speaker 3: his body control, the way he can stop and start.
- 11:08Speaker 3: He slipped a little bit the other night, looked like
- 11:10Speaker 3: maybe a little bit of a clete issue first came
- 11:12Speaker 3: out adjustment. We'll see how that goes with that. I
- 11:15Speaker 3: don't remember anybody else slipping sliding on the field. So
- 11:18Speaker 3: there were a couple of cuts where he went down
- 11:19Speaker 3: a little bit and was trying to work. But John
- 11:22Speaker 3: and Kay, I think you see what he can do
- 11:24Speaker 3: after the catch, and like you said, I think he's
- 11:27Speaker 3: gonna break one at some point.
- 11:28Speaker 5: And then I thought that Diami Brown play was interesting.
- 11:33Speaker 5: You know, if that was a gimmick for this offense.
- 11:36Speaker 5: I don't think they show it. I think that's sort
- 11:39Speaker 5: of Liam Cohen's be part of what he does, that
- 11:42Speaker 5: sort of play, not only going for it, but having
- 11:44Speaker 5: the reverse involved creativity there. That wasn't his only card
- 11:49Speaker 5: to play on that front. It's gonna be part of
- 11:52Speaker 5: what they do. So it's gonna be a people who
- 11:56Speaker 5: want to creative, dynamic offense. They're gonna see it.
- 11:58Speaker 3: They're not gonna show all your cards and season week
- 12:00Speaker 3: one either, Ky, you gotta hold some back and.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Fans have been dying for the creativity. So at least
- 12:04Speaker 1: we've got a little tiny sneak peek. First team off
- 12:08Speaker 1: first team defense, though not great, not going into panic mode,
- 12:12Speaker 1: but it did look porouse at times, and we're all
- 12:16Speaker 1: a little sensitive after last year. I'm sure I have
- 12:19Speaker 1: to imagine this will be addressed at some point this week.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Well, Liams said afterwards.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Okay, Williams said afterward they were playing AWF a little
- 12:27Speaker 5: too much, you know.
- 12:29Speaker 4: So look, this is one drive.
- 12:33Speaker 5: If if it had been over and over again, you'd
- 12:37Speaker 5: be really concerned.
- 12:38Speaker 4: If it's October, you'd be really concerned.
- 12:40Speaker 5: It can't look like this, obviously, you know, but it
- 12:44Speaker 5: starts played nine to plays. Let's keep it in perspective. Uh,
- 12:48Speaker 5: the game is about adjustments. They're gonna give up a
- 12:51Speaker 5: first drive touchdownt some point this year. It's how you
- 12:53Speaker 5: respond to this. In this kind of preseason JP, you
- 12:55Speaker 5: don't have a chance to respond.
- 12:56Speaker 1: You know.
- 12:57Speaker 3: It's more basic than preseason offense preseason defense. Basically lining up,
- 13:03Speaker 3: there's not they're not running blitzes, they're not running exotic looks,
- 13:08Speaker 3: they're not running all these shifts in the secondary, all
- 13:10Speaker 3: these things that you normally would do. It's a very
- 13:13Speaker 3: basic look for preseason week one. It's not ideal. You
- 13:17Speaker 3: don't want it long term like that, but it's one
- 13:19Speaker 3: step in a progression to get ready for week one.
- 13:22Speaker 3: So I say, we'll get to this later. Don't freak
- 13:25Speaker 3: out about one game.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I will say, Darnel Washington is a massive human being.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So if Tyson Campbell was there, I don't know if
- 13:30Speaker 1: that was gonna help you.
- 13:32Speaker 3: The best matchup you're saying, right.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Basically the best tackle on the field at this point. Anyway,
- 13:37Speaker 1: Let's take a look at camb Little's kick once more,
- 13:39Speaker 1: because why not, and also just the reaction from the sideline.
- 13:42Speaker 1: You love to see that obviously, just kind of we
- 13:45Speaker 1: talking a little bit about kind of the culture and
- 13:47Speaker 1: what they're building. But you couldn't not smile and he
- 13:49Speaker 1: saw that because that was just awesome.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Well, I thought the reaction showed something maybe we feel
- 13:56Speaker 5: around here, but it's hard to.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Talk fans to see it.
- 14:01Speaker 5: He's part of the team, right, and sometimes kickers are
- 14:04Speaker 5: like the leave it alone guy.
- 14:06Speaker 4: This guy is part of the building.
- 14:07Speaker 5: He did the really cool throwback commercial for Jaguars Media.
- 14:12Speaker 5: This guy is part of it around here, and you
- 14:14Speaker 5: can see how happy they all.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Were for him.
- 14:18Speaker 4: What a cool moment.
- 14:19Speaker 5: And you don't remember that ny preseason moments. That's when
- 14:22Speaker 5: you remember for a lot. I can't tell you what
- 14:23Speaker 5: happened in twenty nineteen, you'll remember that one.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Cool yeah. And he is a weapon for this team
- 14:31Speaker 3: and for the coaching staff. They know that they can
- 14:34Speaker 3: pretty much lean on three points if they're within fifty
- 14:38Speaker 3: five yards or you know, or so that seems like
- 14:41Speaker 3: an almost slam dunk, which is a nice weapon to
- 14:44Speaker 3: have in your back pocket, especially in some tight football games,
- 14:46Speaker 3: which most are in the National Football League. Also on
- 14:49Speaker 3: this in the celebration, it might have been the most
- 14:51Speaker 3: athletic played Travis Hunter made all night long. I mean
- 14:55Speaker 3: the height he got on the jump is amazing. So
- 14:59Speaker 3: that's it was you a little bit more of what
- 15:01Speaker 3: Travis under can do. Also, it shows what Travis can
- 15:04Speaker 3: be for this locker room too, like he's the first
- 15:06Speaker 3: guy out there, meaning with the kicker. That was really
- 15:09Speaker 3: cool to see.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Let's do one more play from the game. I'm not
- 15:12Speaker 1: going to get two into the weeds here, but basell
- 15:14Speaker 1: toot and we've talked a ton about the running back
- 15:16Speaker 1: room and what we like to see out of them
- 15:17Speaker 1: tooting very fast, but on this touchdown drive, it's just
- 15:21Speaker 1: always cool. And to see the offensive line get involved
- 15:23Speaker 1: in he keeps his legs moving and they push him in.
- 15:26Speaker 1: We put so much pressure on getting this offensive line right,
- 15:30Speaker 1: being more physical obviously preseason whatnot. But this is a
- 15:34Speaker 1: fundamental that they want to instill in everybody on the
- 15:36Speaker 1: team and you can see it.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I think as much as a fundamental, I think
- 15:42Speaker 5: it's a it's an attitude to you can't fake that
- 15:47Speaker 5: that's the backup line or the third but clearly they
- 15:52Speaker 5: know inside the running back room, the offense, the offensive
- 15:55Speaker 5: line they know what the mission is. Liam Cohen has
- 16:00Speaker 5: said it over and over again. He knows they can't
- 16:03Speaker 5: win in this league unless they run better. So to me,
- 16:07Speaker 5: this play showed that the message, the theme, the storyline,
- 16:11Speaker 5: whatever that is, it's not only being heard, it's in
- 16:16Speaker 5: them when they're playing. So I thought that was a
- 16:18Speaker 5: cool sign that maybe it's easy to miss because it
- 16:23Speaker 5: happened so late in the game, but they're hearing it.
- 16:26Speaker 4: And Nathan, you hear We talked for years.
- 16:29Speaker 1: About I think so important for a team to be on.
- 16:32Speaker 5: The same page and to be hearing the coach. To me,
- 16:34Speaker 5: that's ninety percent of this league. To me, this kind
- 16:37Speaker 5: of showed you they're hearing it right now.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's for me. It's a full organization push
- 16:42Speaker 3: back towards that. I mean, it started with obviously the
- 16:44Speaker 3: coaching change, but then the strength and conditioning staff changed
- 16:48Speaker 3: as well. Obviously the front office changed, with one of
- 16:51Speaker 3: the best tackles in league history involved in the decision making.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Now that kind of is where it all begins. And
- 16:58Speaker 3: then the coaching staff Liam Cohen, we want to be
- 17:00Speaker 3: that physical presence up front, and yes, improved the running game,
- 17:03Speaker 3: but it all starts with the five guys in the field,
- 17:06Speaker 3: on the offensive line, the running game, and in the
- 17:08Speaker 3: passing game, and there have been some holes there over
- 17:11Speaker 3: the last few years. That mentality is at every layer
- 17:15Speaker 3: of this organization. And yes it's one preseason game, but
- 17:19Speaker 3: that one play I think shows that they're taking steps
- 17:23Speaker 3: in the right direction in that front. And there's still
- 17:25Speaker 3: a lot of time and a lot of decisions to
- 17:26Speaker 3: be made on the offensive line.
- 17:28Speaker 5: And not to overplay it, but it may have shown
- 17:30Speaker 5: something in toot And then I'm not sure a lot
- 17:31Speaker 5: of people thought about he's here because of his unbelievable speed,
- 17:39Speaker 5: you know.
- 17:39Speaker 4: That wasn't he get starters, blah blah blah.
- 17:41Speaker 5: But it showed some grit that I don't know if
- 17:45Speaker 5: the scouting report said grit as much as it said
- 17:47Speaker 5: speed for him, so interesting twist with him.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and if you can show that you're multifaceted, gets
- 17:53Speaker 1: some more playing time as well. Stays here on jag Zam.
- 17:55Speaker 1: We're going to give you our hot takes when we
- 17:57Speaker 1: come back after the break. Welcome back into jag z
- 18:11Speaker 1: Am today. Our hot takes are going to be brought
- 18:13Speaker 1: to you by firehouse Steps.
- 18:16Speaker 7: You know, it's it is intentional. We have so many playmakers.
- 18:19Speaker 7: You want to get them all involved and early and
- 18:21Speaker 7: like guys get the rock and do something with it.
- 18:24Speaker 7: So I think that is intentional for sure. And then
- 18:26Speaker 7: there's times where the ball just kind of finds finds
- 18:28Speaker 7: guys more than others. I think in games like this,
- 18:31Speaker 7: obviously you want to see you want to spread the
- 18:33Speaker 7: ball around, you want to get guys touches, get them
- 18:34Speaker 7: going and kind of see what see what we can do.
- 18:38Speaker 7: But I thought the guy's a nice job. Obviously we
- 18:40Speaker 7: had the one drive, so it's hard to really evaluate
- 18:42Speaker 7: beyond that. But yeah, I thought the guys did a
- 18:44Speaker 7: good job. When they're number it was called.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Welcome back into jag Zam. Things underway at training camp today.
- 18:51Speaker 1: They have some game to look at from over the
- 18:53Speaker 1: weekend and they're getting back into things. Obviously, we have
- 18:56Speaker 1: tons of thoughts about the preseason. Clearly, John, what's a
- 18:59Speaker 1: hot take have for us from the preseason?
- 19:01Speaker 5: Well, that I'm a lot more optimistic about Trevor after
- 19:06Speaker 5: that game than I think a lot of fans would expect.
- 19:11Speaker 5: I've been stunned by the reaction after the game from
- 19:13Speaker 5: a lot of fans in the ozone talking about you know,
- 19:16Speaker 5: oh it's the same guy.
- 19:17Speaker 4: He didn't look good. He looked fine.
- 19:19Speaker 5: I mean, he didn't look spectacular, but he was six
- 19:22Speaker 5: for seven and I thought even more than that, I'm
- 19:27Speaker 5: anxious to see what Liam says today after practice about
- 19:30Speaker 5: how Trevor looked, because to me, it seemed like he
- 19:34Speaker 5: was going through in a couple of plays, the progressions
- 19:36Speaker 5: they're talking about. He came off a couple of receivers
- 19:39Speaker 5: and went to where it looked like he was going
- 19:42Speaker 5: to the right spot. It looked like he was following
- 19:45Speaker 5: his footwork that he's been working so much on, and
- 19:48Speaker 5: that's what you want to see. You want to see
- 19:49Speaker 5: the things they're working on. You know, they wanted to
- 19:52Speaker 5: be here. He say he was here. He's not gonna
- 19:55Speaker 5: be here right away, but you want to see in
- 19:57Speaker 5: that first game that he's moving toward that. I thought
- 20:00Speaker 5: it looked like that, and if what I thought I
- 20:04Speaker 5: saw is real, there's no more important story in that game.
- 20:07Speaker 4: So I was fine with how he played.
- 20:09Speaker 5: I didn't expect in one series to see you know, dynamic,
- 20:14Speaker 5: you know, unbelievable.
- 20:16Speaker 4: But solid is what you want right now from him.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Solid growth.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Yeah, we impressed. Are you in the panic moment?
- 20:22Speaker 3: I'm not in panic mode with Trevor. I think John
- 20:25Speaker 3: spot on with this. I think that it's a progression.
- 20:27Speaker 3: It has been all off season, by the way, And
- 20:30Speaker 3: he answered your question John, whenever he talked last before
- 20:33Speaker 3: the games. Yeah, from day one of the off season
- 20:36Speaker 3: program when he first got the offense to now, he
- 20:39Speaker 3: felt like he's made some strides and thws have to
- 20:42Speaker 3: continue to see that go. And he's been putting the
- 20:44Speaker 3: time in the effort. He's seeing a little bit of
- 20:46Speaker 3: the results. And they didn't earlier this week. Remember they
- 20:49Speaker 3: had the bad day on Tuesday, bounce back on Wednesday,
- 20:53Speaker 3: had a better day offensively as a whole, And I
- 20:56Speaker 3: think he has a lot to do with that.
- 20:57Speaker 5: All Right, they're behind the sticks a lot of that drive.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Get them to a drive where they get a couple
- 21:03Speaker 5: of second threes. They can do some play action into
- 21:05Speaker 5: any of that. So look one series and then you're
- 21:11Speaker 5: trying to draw all these conclusions off of it.
- 21:14Speaker 3: This is what we do. This is what we do. Now.
- 21:16Speaker 5: I get media, I get the reason for doing it,
- 21:20Speaker 5: but you're gonna be wrong a lot and it's just
- 21:23Speaker 5: too small a sample size to judge a lot, But
- 21:26Speaker 5: I like that feeling you got of being in control
- 21:28Speaker 5: from Trevor there.
- 21:30Speaker 1: JP. What's your hot take for us?
- 21:31Speaker 3: I have a take about the defense, and I know
- 21:35Speaker 3: they were awful last year. They stunk a season ago defensively,
- 21:40Speaker 3: thirty first in the league, almost across the board in
- 21:43Speaker 3: every metric, last in takeaways only nine for the season.
- 21:46Speaker 3: That's bad. I mean, they it was so bad they've
- 21:48Speaker 3: they fired everybody, right, it was that bad. This is
- 21:51Speaker 3: a new era, this is a new defense. Anthony Campinelli
- 21:54Speaker 3: is a new coordinator. They've got a lot of new
- 21:56Speaker 3: players on the back end. They've got some standout, stand
- 21:59Speaker 3: by players who's been around for a while that key
- 22:02Speaker 3: positions on the defensive line and the linebacker. And that's
- 22:04Speaker 3: cool and they're good players. Give them some time. Don't
- 22:08Speaker 3: lose it over two drives one drive for the starters
- 22:12Speaker 3: in the preseason game when they're playing off and playing basic.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I think this person you're looking at right here, Anthony Campanelli.
- 22:20Speaker 3: He's gonna have some tricks up his sleeve when the
- 22:22Speaker 3: season comes. I think they're going to figure out the
- 22:24Speaker 3: secondary with veteran players who know where they're supposed to
- 22:28Speaker 3: be and can help everybody else on the field be
- 22:30Speaker 3: where they're supposed to be and go make plays in
- 22:32Speaker 3: the football. Don't freak out about the defense after one
- 22:36Speaker 3: preseason game. That's my hot take.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Often them all around today. I love this. Keep out
- 22:41Speaker 1: of panic mode. This is a good thing. And I
- 22:43Speaker 1: will say, at least for me, I thought the defense
- 22:46Speaker 1: looked not great in the preseason game as well. But
- 22:48Speaker 1: I think part of my frustration at least last year
- 22:50Speaker 1: was I feel like the defense didn't look great and
- 22:53Speaker 1: then we saw no change. It just continued. I expect
- 22:56Speaker 1: we are going to see some significant change because even
- 22:58Speaker 1: just postgame hearing from Leam and he was like, yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 1: that wasn't good enough. We can't be doing that. So
- 23:03Speaker 1: just some feeling everybody's on the same page. You don't
- 23:06Speaker 1: feel crazy. You're like, Okay, they saw what I saw,
- 23:08Speaker 1: Like we're gonna address this. Like that gives me hope
- 23:10Speaker 1: alone and again preseason I'm gonna go slightly different, still
- 23:15Speaker 1: very optimistic. Kim Little coming back onto the field that
- 23:19Speaker 1: was down there for sideline reporting for the radio broadcast,
- 23:21Speaker 1: and the first thing he said what I was say,
- 23:22Speaker 1: congratulations to him, and he said, I'm so mad that
- 23:25Speaker 1: it's the preseason. It doesn't count. And I think it's
- 23:28Speaker 1: fair to say I think someone's gonna break it this year. Jpno,
- 23:32Speaker 1: you have some theories about this. I think Cam Little
- 23:34Speaker 1: has a very good Kim Little's gonna have the opportunity
- 23:36Speaker 1: to break it is how I'm gonna put it, because
- 23:38Speaker 1: I think Leam Cohen trusts him. He's gonna give him
- 23:40Speaker 1: that opportunity, and he's not scared to give him that
- 23:43Speaker 1: opportunity because part of this is, you know, you don't
- 23:45Speaker 1: want to give up that field position to your opponent.
- 23:46Speaker 1: As we mentioned, I think Cam Little will have that
- 23:49Speaker 1: opportunity to season or kick.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Six the other way Jamal Agnew or Yeah, well, that
- 23:55Speaker 3: kind of thing you don't want to happen. But it's
- 23:57Speaker 3: got to be a certain situation. John talked about it earlier.
- 23:59Speaker 3: It's got to be the end of the half or
- 24:01Speaker 3: the game. You gotta really trust them. If that's to
- 24:04Speaker 3: win a game, well, I mean that's a long way away.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Even if you might only need a field goal. Okay,
- 24:09Speaker 3: if it's coming down to that, what's the better percentage?
- 24:12Speaker 3: Then you're getting into analytics and everything. That go with that,
- 24:14Speaker 3: and you're down the path a little bit. I mentioned
- 24:17Speaker 3: a little bit of this earlier, and I'm not taking
- 24:19Speaker 3: away anything. It's a seventy yard field goal, for goodness sakes.
- 24:22Speaker 3: I don't care what the ball looks like or what
- 24:24Speaker 3: the conditions were. Seventy yards It's never been done in
- 24:27Speaker 3: the NFL preseason, regular season, or otherwise. However, there was
- 24:31Speaker 3: a rule change this offseason where you remember, now the
- 24:35Speaker 3: quarterbacks can work on their game balls all week long
- 24:39Speaker 3: and put mud on them and scuff them and whatever
- 24:41Speaker 3: they need to do. They check the pressure, of course,
- 24:44Speaker 3: as we know before the game. But they changed the
- 24:48Speaker 3: rule for kickers this year. There's a different ball, the
- 24:50Speaker 3: k ball for kickers, and it was the rule at
- 24:54Speaker 3: least recently where you can only work on them from
- 24:56Speaker 3: an hour until kickoff. That's the only time kick cold
- 25:00Speaker 3: touch the footballs that they use. That's changed. They can
- 25:03Speaker 3: work on their caballs all week long, get them ready.
- 25:06Speaker 3: I think there'd be a little bit of that you
- 25:08Speaker 3: can have. You know, different kickers will have different specifications
- 25:12Speaker 3: they want their caballs to be, and I think that
- 25:16Speaker 3: will only help performance. Now, I'm not taking again anything
- 25:19Speaker 3: away from a seventy yard field goal. But I think
- 25:22Speaker 3: it could be broken multiple times this year, and that's
- 25:25Speaker 3: I think just part of the reason.
- 25:27Speaker 5: Why John Yeah, and Cam said it after he was
- 25:29Speaker 5: very a matter of fact that he believes it's gonna
- 25:32Speaker 5: get broken and if it gets broken, will have multiple times.
- 25:36Speaker 5: I think one reason that Cam's gonna have a chance
- 25:40Speaker 5: to break it is I think Liam things is pretty cool.
- 25:42Speaker 4: Yeah, he's like, yeah, so he won't.
- 25:48Speaker 5: Liam can't and won't let that dictate. He's not gonna
- 25:52Speaker 5: go out there with eight minutes to go in the
- 25:54Speaker 5: first quarter, and let you know, Cam tried from seventy eight.
- 25:57Speaker 4: He's not gonna be stupid.
- 25:59Speaker 5: But I think he will lean toward hey, yeah, let's
- 26:02Speaker 5: give him a shot, because there's also an element of
- 26:06Speaker 5: adrenaline that it gives it. You know, you saw it
- 26:09Speaker 5: the other night. This team likes this kid. It fires
- 26:13Speaker 5: up the teammates. If he can hit from seventy one,
- 26:17Speaker 5: there's a big boost going into the second you're going
- 26:20Speaker 5: in the second half. So I do think Liam is
- 26:23Speaker 5: going to think about that and maybe reshape a little
- 26:27Speaker 5: bit how he thinks at the end of half.
- 26:29Speaker 3: I love Cam little after the gate too. He said,
- 26:31Speaker 3: you know, the fifty something yarder after that's even tougher
- 26:35Speaker 3: now too, because hey, I just made one from seventy
- 26:38Speaker 3: Now I've expected it all the time, like fifty three.
- 26:41Speaker 3: That's what it is. That's the expectation is going to
- 26:43Speaker 3: continue to rise form. It's already high anyway. We know
- 26:45Speaker 3: he can make the long kicks and is consistent with that,
- 26:48Speaker 3: but how far is the limit? So far, it's seventy yards.
- 26:53Speaker 3: We'll see what the regular season.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Well, it is very interesting.
- 26:58Speaker 5: We saw it go over from seventy four, right, I mean,
- 27:00Speaker 5: like that kick would have been good for seventy four.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Cam kind of laughed at the end of it and
- 27:05Speaker 5: he's like, you know, I don't know how much more
- 27:07Speaker 5: I got.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Like that might be.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Let's not talk eighty here, but it does change your
- 27:14Speaker 5: dynamic at the end of games. That's about fifteen more
- 27:20Speaker 5: yards than maybe you would have normally thought four or
- 27:25Speaker 5: five years ago that you got to get to somebody's
- 27:27Speaker 5: gonna hit a seventy two yard game winning field goal
- 27:30Speaker 5: this year or something like that in these next couple.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Of years, and also when the regular season comes, I
- 27:36Speaker 3: think the field goal block teams will be a little
- 27:38Speaker 3: more aware of this when it's a seventy yard field goal,
- 27:41Speaker 3: the push up the middle, there might be more designed
- 27:44Speaker 3: for that in a situation like this, and we didn't
- 27:47Speaker 3: see a lot up the middle against the Steelers. That's fine.
- 27:49Speaker 3: He still got it cleared the line and made the kick.
- 27:52Speaker 3: There was a little pressure from his left that got through,
- 27:54Speaker 3: but he got the kick away. I think in the
- 27:55Speaker 3: regular season, when it's full go and they know what's coming,
- 28:00Speaker 3: I think there's gonna be a little more of a
- 28:01Speaker 3: push to to block a field goal like that because
- 28:03Speaker 3: it does have to come down director just a little bit.
- 28:06Speaker 1: And here from special teams coordinator he Firewell letter today.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I'm curious what his thoughts on absolutely might be. Say
- 28:11Speaker 1: with us one more break here in Jagszam, we'll tell
- 28:13Speaker 1: you what's coming up the rest of the week. Jags fans,
- 28:25Speaker 1: you want customize Jaguars furniture for your home, check out
- 28:28Speaker 1: zipchair dot com to browse all the customizable options. Zipchair
- 28:31Speaker 1: is furniture fans, You.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Know, those are some things when you're playing a new system, right,
- 28:37Speaker 2: They've been playing a lot of man coverage over the
- 28:39Speaker 2: last year here and playing a lot more his own coverage,
- 28:41Speaker 2: so oftentimes you almost start to do too much the
- 28:46Speaker 2: other way, where we're giving up a lot of grass
- 28:48Speaker 2: in a little bit of room. So I imagine we're going
- 28:51Speaker 2: to want to ask these guys to get a little stickier,
- 28:55Speaker 2: you know, a little bit.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Stick a lot of defense. I think that'll be a
- 28:58Speaker 1: focused this week. I like that description. Make sure enough
- 29:03Speaker 1: Travis center on defense right now. Probably switch over at
- 29:05Speaker 1: some point maybe in teams period later on. But we
- 29:08Speaker 1: didn't see a ton from him on defense. He had
- 29:10Speaker 1: that one mistackle that everybody's going to talk about, I'm sure.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But also I'm curious because we only saw him to
- 29:17Speaker 1: play what eight plays, how they'll actually use him because
- 29:20Speaker 1: I think in an actual game, I don't know if
- 29:22Speaker 1: he's going to be out there all the time in
- 29:25Speaker 1: every situation. It might be when it's a little more
- 29:28Speaker 1: red zone esque for the opposing team, but again we'll.
- 29:31Speaker 3: See, Yeah, you know, it depends on the opponent, depends
- 29:34Speaker 3: on how they play their style offensively. If the Ravens
- 29:37Speaker 3: come in, you may not see him in power running
- 29:40Speaker 3: situations a lot. I mean that just kind of makes
- 29:42Speaker 3: sense to me. So could come in depending on the situation.
- 29:45Speaker 3: Third and long maybe, Okay, multiple receivers you're out there,
- 29:47Speaker 3: and the nickel and dime packages. Absolutely, I think that's
- 29:52Speaker 3: just a work in progress. And it was the same
- 29:54Speaker 3: to be said for offense too. He's going to be
- 29:56Speaker 3: out there, but is he out there in certain packages?
- 30:00Speaker 3: He's leam ConA said already John that he's only working
- 30:03Speaker 3: on certain personnel groups so far so far, but that's
- 30:06Speaker 3: gonna grow and we'll see how fast that grows as
- 30:09Speaker 3: the season approaches.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I think defensively, and I got a couple of
- 30:12Speaker 5: questions about you know the quote unquote mistackle, but he's
- 30:15Speaker 5: not bringing the hammer on defense, right, That's not what
- 30:18Speaker 5: this kid is. I think I even thought on the
- 30:21Speaker 5: play he got in the backfield and sort of made
- 30:23Speaker 5: the guy change directions, and he needs to come up
- 30:25Speaker 5: and you know, clean up that play.
- 30:27Speaker 4: Afterward. He's gonna play a lot.
- 30:29Speaker 5: On defense and get off the field situations, and I
- 30:33Speaker 5: think he'll be fine in those situations. Also, remember with him,
- 30:38Speaker 5: this is still his first NFL game. It's his first
- 30:41Speaker 5: time sort of.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I know he's done the.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Fourth and back thing, but he's trying to figure out
- 30:45Speaker 5: how they're gonna use him in real time. With the
- 30:48Speaker 5: lights on, He's going to be fine and bring them
- 30:53Speaker 5: what they expect, and he'll play a lot on defense early.
- 30:57Speaker 5: But as you alluded to, not necessarily first series where
- 31:02Speaker 5: he's in on every play of that series.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Over the course of.
- 31:05Speaker 5: A game, he'll be in all of the situations they
- 31:08Speaker 5: wanted to be in.
- 31:09Speaker 1: John No preseason. Our second preseason game is next Sunday
- 31:12Speaker 1: in New Orleans, you imagine. Obviously, practice reps are huge
- 31:15Speaker 1: for Liiam Cohen. He feels like can get a lot work,
- 31:17Speaker 1: a lot of work done during practice time because we
- 31:19Speaker 1: only have that one joint practice next week. Feel like
- 31:21Speaker 1: some of the practice this week might be a bigger
- 31:23Speaker 1: deal to them and trying to see what they need
- 31:25Speaker 1: to see before the season.
- 31:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know, I think so it will be
- 31:30Speaker 5: interesting to see what they do in the next couple
- 31:33Speaker 5: of weeks. You would think with a joint practice in
- 31:36Speaker 5: Miami in Week three that they wouldn't play a lot
- 31:41Speaker 5: in that game because the theory right now in the
- 31:43Speaker 5: NFL is you play a lot of your guys in
- 31:45Speaker 5: joint practice and then play your backups. So that would
- 31:48Speaker 5: lead me to believe they're gonna play quite a bit
- 31:49Speaker 5: on Sunday. But we haven't seen how Liam operates yet,
- 31:52Speaker 5: so you know, I don't know.
- 31:54Speaker 4: I wish I had a better answer.
- 31:56Speaker 3: Let's see what the apparently gonna put some kind of
- 31:58Speaker 3: scrimmage out there later in the week. What does that entail?
- 32:01Speaker 3: How many reps are they going hard? Like? What's the
- 32:04Speaker 3: you know, how does that add up leading into Sunday.
- 32:07Speaker 3: It is good though that this is almost a normal
- 32:10Speaker 3: game week. You know, with a game on Sunday, extra day,
- 32:13Speaker 3: you can kind of get into a regular practice, oh
- 32:15Speaker 3: somewhat regular practice routine. There's still somewhat in camp, but
- 32:19Speaker 3: then all of a sudden, Sunday one o'clock you're in
- 32:21Speaker 3: the Superdome.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Let's do it all right, jag XAM is back to
- 32:24Speaker 1: our normal schedule, being back on Wednesday and Thursday this
- 32:27Speaker 1: week as we have training camp continues. Jp kmkster filling in.
- 32:30Speaker 3: This is what the morning's like the rooster Crowe today
- 32:33Speaker 3: and here I am.
- 32:34Speaker 1: You read a lot of morning energy. All right, love it,
- 32:37Speaker 1: all right, We'll see you on Wednesday.
