- 0:00Speaker 1: I get aid, boys and girls. It's a bloody of
- 0:02Speaker 1: you project, it's harps. It's another day in the life
- 0:05Speaker 1: of all of us, which is bloody terrific. I wonder
- 0:07Speaker 1: how many days we have in a life? What's ten years?
- 0:11Speaker 1: Would be three hundred three three and a half thousand times.
- 0:14Speaker 1: That's a lot. Seventy thousand, eighty thousand days.
- 0:17Speaker 2: T Hi hi, Oh, we have fourteen hundred and fortylation.
- 0:22Speaker 2: What that's my calculation?
- 0:24Speaker 3: A lot?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot, fourteen hundred and forty minutes in a day.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Isn't it amazing how quick a day can go and
- 0:31Speaker 1: how long a minute can go. Yeah, Like a minute
- 0:34Speaker 1: can be fucking forever depending on what you're doing.
- 0:37Speaker 2: And I took way too long to realize that saying
- 0:40Speaker 2: I would just wish I had another day a week
- 0:42Speaker 2: or another hour in the day would not change anything,
- 0:45Speaker 2: because I would just do exactly what I'm doing and
- 0:47Speaker 2: use it on shit and then complain about it.
- 0:51Speaker 1: That's one of the you know, I did this little
- 0:53Speaker 1: kind of pseudo study when I was a young PT
- 0:55Speaker 1: and the number one reason not excuse, reason, nudge, nudge
- 0:59Speaker 1: wink people gave me for not being in shape was
- 1:02Speaker 1: that they didn't have the time. I'm like, would have
- 1:05Speaker 1: nothing to do with your behavior or habits or fucking
- 1:08Speaker 1: willpower or choices or diet or exit. You know, it's like,
- 1:13Speaker 1: it's not a me thing, Nicole, welcome to the show.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:18Speaker 1: It's not a me thing. It's a time thing. Or
- 1:21Speaker 1: because if it's about time, then I don't have to
- 1:23Speaker 1: take responsibility because I'm not in charge of time. You know,
- 1:27Speaker 1: times are fixed thing. You know. And then you go, well,
- 1:30Speaker 1: it's like people who go on time poor. I go,
- 1:33Speaker 1: how are you time poor? You've got the same fucking
- 1:35Speaker 1: minutes as everyone else per day, but you've got exactly
- 1:39Speaker 1: the same allocation, so your time equal.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Well, you know, I've got a thing about time. I've
- 1:46Speaker 4: got a bit of a d here about time. What
- 1:48Speaker 4: about doctors? Why can't a doctor ever run on time?
- 1:53Speaker 4: How can you, day after day have a schedule of
- 1:55Speaker 4: people and right from the first appointment you're running late.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Now do you want an actual answer or do you
- 2:01Speaker 1: just want to vent?
- 2:03Speaker 4: I really want to vent being give me an answer
- 2:04Speaker 4: to it.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Well, I think the answer is they just don't allocate
- 2:08Speaker 1: enough time for the doctor. I think it's the system.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I think it's the business model, Like the business model
- 2:15Speaker 1: is depending on which place. It's like, we didn't think
- 2:18Speaker 1: we'd start here. Fuck, sorry, listeners. I think the business
- 2:22Speaker 1: model is, you know, like in some places eight minutes. Well,
- 2:25Speaker 1: how on earth can you give any one great care?
- 2:30Speaker 1: I don't think it's the doctor's fault. I think it's
- 2:32Speaker 1: the system. And I think if the doctor's running late,
- 2:36Speaker 1: it might ironically be an indication that they care, because
- 2:41Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. But although I did do
- 2:45Speaker 1: a phone consult the other day because I just needed
- 2:49Speaker 1: some blood pressure medication that I take. No everyone on
- 2:51Speaker 1: it's not because I'm out of shape, It's because mum
- 2:54Speaker 1: and dad's genetics. But start to finish. The whole consult
- 2:57Speaker 1: on the phone was three hundred three three and a
- 3:00Speaker 1: half minutes. So what is that one hundred and eighty
- 3:03Speaker 1: three and ten seconds. I remember getting off going, fuck,
- 3:06Speaker 1: that's good money for them. But I think it's like
- 3:08Speaker 1: seventy bucks. I'm like they had a win. Yeah that's
- 3:11Speaker 1: twenty dollars a minute. That's a good alley rate. But anyway,
- 3:14Speaker 1: I got my drugs. You know, a BP's back down,
- 3:17Speaker 1: you know, not clutching my chest anymore, didn't have to
- 3:20Speaker 1: drive anywhere. But Tiff, how are you?
- 3:24Speaker 3: I fabulous? I'm fabulous.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Let's let's give us thirty second review. Because you've been away,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you've been up north, You're at one of the world's
- 3:32Speaker 1: bloody biggest speaking conferences. It was bloody, all the bells
- 3:36Speaker 1: and whistles, and you, according to you, were the best
- 3:40Speaker 1: and the superstar. It was.
- 3:42Speaker 2: It was.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It's been renamed the Tiff Show. Get the fuck behind me,
- 3:46Speaker 1: the rest of you fucking amateurs.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Is that true what you were telling us, Tiff?
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, all of it, apart from being the best,
- 3:54Speaker 1: which is it's a burden. I mean, good on you, though,
- 3:57Speaker 1: like do it.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Though, it's a heavy boad to carry.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The funny thing I see is that you're never putting
- 4:03Speaker 1: anything on social media. You keep it so low key.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Show Wallflower. What can I make?
- 4:08Speaker 1: It's the humility that I love. I did a humility
- 4:12Speaker 1: workshop on the weekend. By the way, I was the best.
- 4:18Speaker 1: How half of our audience is laughing half a gun?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Well that doesn't make sense. Did you have a good
- 4:25Speaker 1: time though?
- 4:26Speaker 3: I really did.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I just adore being in the room with people like
- 4:31Speaker 2: it gives me so much juries it's a priority of
- 4:33Speaker 2: mine now to get to a bare minimum of two
- 4:36Speaker 2: if not three yearly big events like that around people
- 4:39Speaker 2: that are doing similar thing, Like there's that industry.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I did a post about it.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I just think that speakers are probably one of the
- 4:48Speaker 2: few that can be around their.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Peers and genuinely.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Want to see people succeed and help people succeed and.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Cheer them on.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And I don't think that's typical for all industries.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Oh definitely not. And I don't think it's even typical
- 5:03Speaker 1: for speakers across the board necessarily, Like there's a fair
- 5:07Speaker 1: bit of it's like yeah, but if you can mean
- 5:10Speaker 1: that environment with a bunch of speakers all there for
- 5:13Speaker 1: a very similar reason, it's amazing. And that having somebody
- 5:17Speaker 1: who's in your corner. Speaking of speakers, Michael Sedric Haller
- 5:22Speaker 1: is going to become a speaker. I'm going to turn
- 5:24Speaker 1: him into a fucking megastar because he's got all the
- 5:26Speaker 1: bits and pieces, but he's just as lazy as fuck.
- 5:29Speaker 1: He's like a fucking four year old in a lolly shop.
- 5:33Speaker 1: He's got the attention span of a fucking ferret.
- 5:37Speaker 4: So I can't know.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'm trying to wrangle his brain and his life and
- 5:43Speaker 1: his stories and his insights and his experience into some
- 5:47Speaker 1: kind of product, because I think the illustrated man and
- 5:51Speaker 1: a pair of jeens and a T shirt working out
- 5:54Speaker 1: might ruffle a few feathers but also share some insights
- 5:59Speaker 1: that lots of people would enjoy hearing. That's my theory.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And we're getting underway very soon, aren't we, Michael, I
- 6:05Speaker 1: think so we are.
- 6:08Speaker 4: We are.
- 6:09Speaker 1: We're starting weekly coaching Mick and I, which is I
- 6:15Speaker 1: made him put on his big boy pants yesterday we
- 6:17Speaker 1: had lunch. We spoke about grown up things.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Those pants.
- 6:22Speaker 1: By the way, can I just side? Oh yeah, I'll
- 6:26Speaker 1: look at you. You just pointed to one of his
- 6:28Speaker 1: numerous boxing bloody felt in the background, Champion just saying, yeah,
- 6:36Speaker 1: keep a lid on it though. Okay, So yesterday Tiff
- 6:39Speaker 1: and I tiff. Yesterday, Michael and I went out. Mick
- 6:42Speaker 1: and I went out, had we're going to have a coffee.
- 6:46Speaker 1: We had a coffee and the lady came up and said,
- 6:49Speaker 1: do you want to lunch? I went no, I'm good
- 6:51Speaker 1: and he ordered scrambled eggs with chicken, and I went, fuck,
- 6:54Speaker 1: how good does that sound? And I don't normally eat lunch,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but I'm like, well, it's just protein and a bit
- 6:59Speaker 1: of at, and so I ate the scrambled eggs and
- 7:04Speaker 1: the chicken, which was backstroking in about a gallon of butter.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Couldn't have been any yummier butter, eggs, chicken, salt, pepper.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I inhaled that like the fat kid that I was
- 7:16Speaker 1: at a birthday party and and it was so How
- 7:23Speaker 1: good was it? Mick?
- 7:25Speaker 4: I'm still thinking about it before you even mentioned it.
- 7:28Speaker 4: That's on my mind.
- 7:29Speaker 1: So fucking delicious. I want to go back with it.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But we ate that at probably one o'clock. I had
- 7:36Speaker 1: zero hunger until nine point thirty last night. Yeah, like
- 7:41Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, like I didn't feel anyway. Sorry everyone,
- 7:46Speaker 1: that's boring, but it's so funny. And it was a
- 7:48Speaker 1: relatively small meal, Like it wasn't a huge meal, but
- 7:52Speaker 1: it was so calorically dense and so much good stuff. Jeez,
- 7:56Speaker 1: I might do that once a week anyway, Enough about that, Mick,
- 8:01Speaker 1: how are you?
- 8:03Speaker 4: I'm pretty good. I'm full, but I'm good. Yeah, I'm good.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that took her well. I got to like normal
- 8:10Speaker 1: dinner time. I was actually still quite full.
- 8:12Speaker 4: You yeah, absolutely same here. And I have to admit
- 8:16Speaker 4: that when I was sitting there in that cafe and
- 8:19Speaker 4: watching you wolf down that eggs and chicken, I was
- 8:24Speaker 4: very very taken aback because I've done many, many, many
- 8:27Speaker 4: many over a long period of time, many years. I've
- 8:30Speaker 4: done many lunches with you, and I've never seen you
- 8:33Speaker 4: actually eat that lunch.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I try not to.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I'm quite surprised to see that, and I'm quite chuffed
- 8:40Speaker 4: because this is one of my meals.
- 8:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 8:42Speaker 4: It's funny, you know, as a boxer and a person
- 8:44Speaker 4: that's competing all the time, people would be amazed with
- 8:48Speaker 4: my doll I mean my diet. I mean that chicken
- 8:51Speaker 4: and eggs. I'll have that probably three times a week.
- 8:54Speaker 4: I eat passed it virtually every night, and I've got
- 8:58Speaker 4: very very very low body fat and I've got good
- 9:02Speaker 4: muscle density, and it's just amazing what your body can
- 9:07Speaker 4: do and how much it's sort of you know, it
- 9:10Speaker 4: can it can thrive on certain foods, and having all
- 9:13Speaker 4: that protein was just beautiful, you know, like it just
- 9:15Speaker 4: keeps me, keeps me full all day. Yeah, I'm I'm
- 9:20Speaker 4: not hanging for something with wishing that it was a
- 9:22Speaker 4: bigger meal or anything like that. It just just holds
- 9:25Speaker 4: me and I can still train at a pretty high
- 9:27Speaker 4: level and you know, expend all my energy and it
- 9:31Speaker 4: just gives me everything I need.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean you're super lean and you've got
- 9:36Speaker 1: apes of muscle and you're an athlete, so whatever you're doing.
- 9:39Speaker 1: It's so funny though people get caught up in like
- 9:43Speaker 1: how many calories is in that? Now? Calories matter, of course, yes,
- 9:46Speaker 1: But the thing is when you eat something like that,
- 9:50Speaker 1: like if I had a had you just reminded me
- 9:53Speaker 1: if I had had a sandwich, which I wouldn't, but
- 9:55Speaker 1: if I had a sandwich, I would have been hungry
- 9:57Speaker 1: three hours later. Yeah for sure. But I literally and
- 10:02Speaker 1: when I did eight dinner finally it was half my
- 10:04Speaker 1: dinner because I'm like that that shit just just it
- 10:07Speaker 1: didn't destroy me because I felt good. But I'm like,
- 10:09Speaker 1: oh I could I reckon, I could almost eat one
- 10:12Speaker 1: of them a day and I'd be done. Yeah, probably
- 10:15Speaker 1: not more, but you know maybe, but yeah, anyway, enough
- 10:19Speaker 1: about our lunches. So one of the things I talk
- 10:22Speaker 1: about a lot, which everyone not everyone, but I guess
- 10:25Speaker 1: a lot of my listeners know, is I'm fascinated with
- 10:28Speaker 1: human potential. I'm fascinated with you know, how much of
- 10:31Speaker 1: our potential we can tap into, which I did an
- 10:33Speaker 1: episode very recently. You know. So there's a thing called
- 10:40Speaker 1: the potential capacity gap, and the potential capacity gap is sorry,
- 10:48Speaker 1: performance capacity, Sorry everyone, performance capacity. There's a lot of
- 10:52Speaker 1: shit in my head anyway. The performance capacity gap is
- 10:56Speaker 1: your current level of performance and capacity, I said to
- 11:00Speaker 1: you yesterday, Mick, is what you're actually capable of, Like,
- 11:03Speaker 1: what is your actual ten out of ten limit potential?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Like foot to the floor redlining ten thousand revs? What
- 11:13Speaker 1: could you do if you had to do it now?
- 11:15Speaker 1: Obviously we can't redline consistently, but we tell ourselves a story.
- 11:20Speaker 1: And this is an analogous to all the same as
- 11:23Speaker 1: the rate of perceived exertion. We've spoken about a few
- 11:26Speaker 1: times in exercise. But I was listening to you yesterday
- 11:30Speaker 1: and I was just thinking, it's so fucking amazing knowing
- 11:34Speaker 1: your background, which was to say less than ideal is
- 11:38Speaker 1: the understatement of the millennium, like you had to Like,
- 11:43Speaker 1: if I was trying to turn someone into an athlete
- 11:46Speaker 1: and there was a thousand people I had in a queue,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I would pick you one thousand, not because of you,
- 11:52Speaker 1: not because of your genetics, but because of how fucking
- 11:55Speaker 1: abused your body had been and just you know everything,
- 12:00Speaker 1: are you know the mentality No, not really, I think
- 12:04Speaker 1: the mentality is good, but the ship that you've done
- 12:07Speaker 1: to your body and the trauma that it had been
- 12:10Speaker 1: through for not a week, but for probably a decade
- 12:13Speaker 1: or two, you know, And then thinking about and I
- 12:19Speaker 1: want to share this because one it's just an interesting story,
- 12:22Speaker 1: and two I like people to go, oh, well, if
- 12:25Speaker 1: Mick can do that, or Tiff can do that, or
- 12:28Speaker 1: even Harps can do that, who doesn't have great genetics?
- 12:33Speaker 1: Then what could I do? Because that's the real question
- 12:36Speaker 1: is not what do I think I can do? Because
- 12:40Speaker 1: that's really your story about your ability versus what is
- 12:44Speaker 1: actually possible for me? If I did everything I can do, really,
- 12:51Speaker 1: no bullshit, no excuses, no talking myself down, no limiting,
- 12:55Speaker 1: no putting on the emotional and psychological handbrake, no self sabotage.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Just if I fucking was fearless and not lazy and proactive,
- 13:06Speaker 1: what could I do? And I think that you know,
- 13:09Speaker 1: this whole show is about potential and possibilities and performance
- 13:14Speaker 1: and so it's a beautiful fit. So that we'll start
- 13:17Speaker 1: from that, we'll work back from the end. So for
- 13:20Speaker 1: those who don't know you at the minute, this phase
- 13:23Speaker 1: of your life. Among other things, you're a boxer. How
- 13:26Speaker 1: old are you now?
- 13:27Speaker 4: I'm fifty four, about ten fifty five.
- 13:30Speaker 1: So you're a competitive boxer, and so you're competing in
- 13:34Speaker 1: the masters.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Yep.
- 13:36Speaker 1: What titles have you won in the last five years
- 13:39Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 13:40Speaker 4: I've won a WBL World title, I've won a WBL
- 13:45Speaker 4: Asia Pacific super middleweight title. I've won an MBA Australian title,
- 13:51Speaker 4: and I've won an MBV Master's Boxing Victoria Victorian title.
- 13:56Speaker 1: So you won four titles. By the way, congratulate, it's amazing.
- 14:02Speaker 1: When did you start training? Seriously, so fifty four, when
- 14:07Speaker 1: did you start training to box? As in, sorry to compete?
- 14:13Speaker 1: When you went right, I'd like to have a fight,
- 14:16Speaker 1: and let's he's better question. When was your first fight?
- 14:21Speaker 4: How old were you my first fight? I was forty nine.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's crazy. By the way, everyone, I'm not recommending
- 14:33Speaker 1: taking up box box. I'd rather you did I'd rather
- 14:38Speaker 1: you did something else, just for cognitive function reasons. But
- 14:42Speaker 1: and in your first fight. You lost, right, what was that?
- 14:45Speaker 1: But did you did you come out of that going
- 14:48Speaker 1: fuck this is great or fuck that, I'm never doing
- 14:50Speaker 1: that again, or how did you come out of that?
- 14:54Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's an interesting question, you know, like I
- 14:56Speaker 4: came out of that. You know, for me, it was
- 14:59Speaker 4: horrendously terrifying. It was really really scary, terrifying. But I
- 15:06Speaker 4: was extremely proud of myself for seeing it through. But
- 15:11Speaker 4: it was terrifying. And you know, when you do something
- 15:15Speaker 4: like that and you go through it and you lose
- 15:17Speaker 4: as well, for me, it was it could have been
- 15:22Speaker 4: soul destroying. It's certainly as an adult, you know, like
- 15:25Speaker 4: a forty nine year old man. I was out in
- 15:27Speaker 4: the back of the change rooms and I was crying
- 15:33Speaker 4: because it meant so much to me.
- 15:35Speaker 1: That's amazing, you know.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I felt sort of embarrassed of that, but I was.
- 15:39Speaker 4: I was crying because I meant a lot to me,
- 15:41Speaker 4: and I had a lot of people telling me and
- 15:44Speaker 4: doubting what I was doing and saying, haven't you know,
- 15:47Speaker 4: surely this will teach you. You know, what they're trying
- 15:50Speaker 4: to say is, surely this will make sure that you
- 15:52Speaker 4: don't do it anymore. And me being an addict that's
- 15:57Speaker 4: in recovery gone. Well, if you tell me I can't
- 16:01Speaker 4: do something and it terrifies me, guess what, I'm actually
- 16:04Speaker 4: going to keep doing it. And I had this just
- 16:08Speaker 4: this in and knowing that I had to move past
- 16:13Speaker 4: something within myself. I didn't know what exactly what that was,
- 16:16Speaker 4: but I just knew that I needed to keep going
- 16:19Speaker 4: and I had to move past something. I had to
- 16:21Speaker 4: settle something within me, in my in my soul, in
- 16:25Speaker 4: my psyche. And and like you said, like we let
- 16:29Speaker 4: into you know, like there was a lot of trauma
- 16:31Speaker 4: and a lot of stuff for my past and a
- 16:34Speaker 4: lot of you know, a way of my life where
- 16:36Speaker 4: you know, I spent you know, as we know, numerous
- 16:39Speaker 4: times in prison, I was around an element where there
- 16:43Speaker 4: was a lot of violence and a lot of fear
- 16:47Speaker 4: and a lot of control. And you know, and I
- 16:52Speaker 4: did a lot of things in my life that I
- 16:54Speaker 4: was very shameful of. And you know, one of them,
- 16:56Speaker 4: one of them that that sort of I haven't talked
- 17:00Speaker 4: about a lot, but sort of sits in there is
- 17:02Speaker 4: is that you know, I've got a young daughter that
- 17:05Speaker 4: was born when I was seventeen, and you know, I
- 17:10Speaker 4: was sort of out of her life at eighteen and
- 17:12Speaker 4: she was one, and we didn't really reconnect again until
- 17:16Speaker 4: she was twelve, and she's thirty seven now. But for
- 17:23Speaker 4: a lot of her life, I mean I basically, through
- 17:26Speaker 4: my addiction, I let her go and I didn't chase.
- 17:30Speaker 4: I was a child myself, but I just didn't follow
- 17:32Speaker 4: up and I just didn't. I let it go, you know.
- 17:35Speaker 4: And I've hated myself for that all my life. And
- 17:38Speaker 4: then and of course then that got me asking questions
- 17:41Speaker 4: within myself at different times, like am I a coward?
- 17:47Speaker 4: Am I really a piece of shit? Am I somebody
- 17:50Speaker 4: that just folds when things get too difficult? Am I
- 17:55Speaker 4: somebody that can't see anything through? Or what have you? So,
- 17:59Speaker 4: so all of doubts, without me even knowing it, they
- 18:02Speaker 4: sat inside of me for the rest of my addiction career,
- 18:06Speaker 4: which thankfully I got clean and sober at thirty. So
- 18:10Speaker 4: I'm twenty five years clean and sober, which is amazing.
- 18:13Speaker 4: And I lived an amazing life now, thank you, thank
- 18:16Speaker 4: you very much. But you know what, it's still left
- 18:19Speaker 4: with me. And so I put all the drugs in
- 18:21Speaker 4: the alcohol down and that's amazing, it's beautiful. Achievements, and
- 18:25Speaker 4: it's great. And I've got two other kids now. My
- 18:27Speaker 4: son's twenty five and he's never seen me drink or use,
- 18:30Speaker 4: and my other daughter's twenty years old and she's never
- 18:32Speaker 4: seen me drink or use. And we've had a beautiful
- 18:35Speaker 4: life together. But you know what, there was still that
- 18:39Speaker 4: part inside of me that said, are you a coward?
- 18:47Speaker 4: It is somebody that can't face up and these questions
- 18:51Speaker 4: I needed answered, And are you somebody that runs at
- 18:56Speaker 4: the first sign of trouble? I can't see anything through,
- 19:00Speaker 4: you know, And losing that first fight for me was
- 19:05Speaker 4: the first sign of trouble in that context, and I
- 19:09Speaker 4: had to make a decision deep within myself as to
- 19:12Speaker 4: am I going to see this through? Am I going
- 19:14Speaker 4: to be who I'm meant to be? I want to
- 19:16Speaker 4: see who I am. I don't know who I am.
- 19:19Speaker 4: At forty nine years old, I don't know who I am.
- 19:22Speaker 4: I thought I did, I thought I did many times
- 19:26Speaker 4: I didn't know, and now I want proof. I want
- 19:29Speaker 4: to understand who I am. So I made a decision
- 19:34Speaker 4: that no matter what, no matter how terrified I am,
- 19:39Speaker 4: I am going to continue fighting and I will win
- 19:44Speaker 4: a title because when I win that title, I can
- 19:48Speaker 4: prove to myself nothing to anybody else, don't care what
- 19:50Speaker 4: it says to anyone else, but to me, I can
- 19:53Speaker 4: prove to myself that I'm not a coward, that even
- 19:56Speaker 4: though I went through extreme difficulty and and had to
- 20:00Speaker 4: walk through fear, I made it out the other side.
- 20:04Speaker 4: And and let's see who's sitting there at the other end,
- 20:07Speaker 4: you know, and that was what really important. That's what
- 20:11Speaker 4: boxing has been about to me, you know. The whole
- 20:13Speaker 4: journey's been about that, you know, and it's just been
- 20:17Speaker 4: an absolute pleasure, but in a take in a painful way,
- 20:25Speaker 4: an absolute pleasure, you know, to face these fears and
- 20:29Speaker 4: to reveal who I truly am.
- 20:32Speaker 1: The irony is listening. Feel free to jump in any time, Tift.
- 20:35Speaker 1: The irony is for me. Tell me if I get
- 20:39Speaker 1: this wrong. But it's almost not about the boxing. The
- 20:42Speaker 1: boxing's like a metaphor or the boxings like a pathway
- 20:49Speaker 1: to the things that you're really doing. It's like you
- 20:53Speaker 1: trying to figure out who you are through this process
- 20:56Speaker 1: and your ability to understand your because it's really almost
- 21:02Speaker 1: like a self awareness journey of your mind and your
- 21:07Speaker 1: emotions and your behaviors and your morality and your values
- 21:11Speaker 1: and your purpose, and you learn about yourself. You know,
- 21:15Speaker 1: we always talk about learning through adversity, like you don't
- 21:18Speaker 1: learn in comfort, like you not that every day has
- 21:22Speaker 1: got to be twenty four hours of pain, of course,
- 21:24Speaker 1: but you know, you don't build resilience eating fucking chip,
- 21:27Speaker 1: sitting on the couch, you know you don't, like you
- 21:30Speaker 1: don't you don't build resilience when everybody's doing everything for you.
- 21:35Speaker 1: But that that tenacity and that you know that and
- 21:40Speaker 1: it can be anything listeners, of course. But another thing
- 21:43Speaker 1: that I this is going to sound really weird. I'm
- 21:47Speaker 1: glad that you hated yourself about your daughter. You know why.
- 21:50Speaker 1: That's a I don't want to hate yourself anymore, but
- 21:54Speaker 1: because it shows me that you're not a sociopath, because
- 21:57Speaker 1: a sociopath wouldn't care. Yeah, the fact that you cared,
- 22:02Speaker 1: Did you let her down? Yep? Were you a kid, yep?
- 22:06Speaker 1: Were you addicted and somewhat fucking out of touch with reality?
- 22:11Speaker 1: And were you out of yep yep? Doesn't make it okay.
- 22:15Speaker 1: But it someone explains it, it doesn't excuse it. It's
- 22:18Speaker 1: not a good thing. But that was the practical reality
- 22:21Speaker 1: of your life. But then as soon as you got
- 22:24Speaker 1: in a space where you were better, you weren't that
- 22:26Speaker 1: person doing those things. It's like everything's clear and you're like,
- 22:32Speaker 1: so for me, the you know, turned down the self
- 22:35Speaker 1: hate now for sure, because it doesn't fix or change anything,
- 22:38Speaker 1: but that the fact that you felt guilty, that you
- 22:42Speaker 1: felt bad, that you feel that you let it down
- 22:45Speaker 1: or whatever. I actually think maybe some other psychology people
- 22:50Speaker 1: wouldn't say this. I think it's great because it means
- 22:54Speaker 1: that on a deep level, you care. And there was
- 22:57Speaker 1: a time there where, I know, the death that you
- 23:00Speaker 1: were at, I don't think you could have cared about
- 23:03Speaker 1: anything because you were too fucked.
- 23:06Speaker 4: Correct, absolutely correct, and you know like this this I
- 23:11Speaker 4: love talking about all this stuff.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I really do.
- 23:12Speaker 4: You know, but this relationship with my daughter, you know,
- 23:19Speaker 4: has it's been tested again, you know, like so if
- 23:23Speaker 4: I can just go on, I mean we reconnected when
- 23:26Speaker 4: she was twelve until until my daughter was twenty about
- 23:29Speaker 4: to turn twenty one, before ever in her life had
- 23:33Speaker 4: she ever called me dad, right, And was also around
- 23:37Speaker 4: that time the first time in her life I'd ever
- 23:39Speaker 4: heard her say I love you, And that was just
- 23:43Speaker 4: mind blowing, you know, and we sort of rebuilt our relationship,
- 23:46Speaker 4: and I tried to make amends, you know, for for
- 23:53Speaker 4: her life, really, you know, as best as what I
- 23:55Speaker 4: could through the years. But unfortunately, you know, about well,
- 24:01Speaker 4: I think it's about three years ago now, or certainly
- 24:03Speaker 4: about two years ago, she decided to walk away from
- 24:07Speaker 4: me again and cut me out of her life. And
- 24:11Speaker 4: that was really hard to accept. It was one of
- 24:15Speaker 4: those times again of the sort of adversity and pain
- 24:20Speaker 4: that I had to sort of face up to. But
- 24:23Speaker 4: actually what it did for me is that it's helped
- 24:25Speaker 4: me move to a new realm within myself where I
- 24:29Speaker 4: had to accept exactly what you said. I'm not happy
- 24:32Speaker 4: about what happened in her childhood, of course, I'm not
- 24:34Speaker 4: happy about that at all, and I wish I could
- 24:36Speaker 4: change it, but I can't. Have I done everything I
- 24:40Speaker 4: can to make amends for that, Yes I have, and
- 24:46Speaker 4: you know what, her work walking away at the moment
- 24:49Speaker 4: hurts me very deeply, but I have to forgive myself.
- 24:55Speaker 4: I've done all I can to try and repair the damage,
- 24:59Speaker 4: and I've had to.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Let it go.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Mm hmm, you know, and hate. I'm sure we'll reconnect
- 25:07Speaker 4: at some point Yeah, yeah, you know, uh, and it'll
- 25:11Speaker 4: be with open arms when we do it.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Yeah, good few, man. That's tough. I mean, families are tough.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Love's tough. It's like the fucking space between love and
- 25:20Speaker 1: hate is about a millimeter. Yeah, you know, like some
- 25:24Speaker 1: you know, some of the ship that people say to
- 25:27Speaker 1: people that they love. It's fucking horrendous. Yeah, you know,
- 25:32Speaker 1: and it's it's it's like then there there's a saying
- 25:36Speaker 1: about that someone's probably yelling at at the fucking their
- 25:39Speaker 1: phone right now. Tif do you know that the relations anyway,
- 25:43Speaker 1: it's like there, what does it say? Bedfellows or some
- 25:47Speaker 1: oldie world bullshit? All right, So I want to jump
- 25:49Speaker 1: back into you. And so we've spoken about this before,
- 25:57Speaker 1: but for those who don't know, so you you had
- 25:59Speaker 1: a few cracks at suicide. One of them, you broke
- 26:06Speaker 1: your ankle. You jumped off a bridge. What was that
- 26:09Speaker 1: bridge again, over Burwood Highway or something.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Now it was the Blackburn Road bridge over the Monash Freeway.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Yeah, so you jumped whatever that was thirty or forty
- 26:19Speaker 1: feet because that's going to fucking sting into traffic and somehow,
- 26:26Speaker 1: I mean, you didn't get out of it well, but
- 26:28Speaker 1: you didn't die. I mean you clearly, dud. God does
- 26:32Speaker 1: not want you at the minute, So fucking steady on
- 26:35Speaker 1: the death stuff. He's like, bro, I kept you alive
- 26:38Speaker 1: through all that other shit so far, it's not making
- 26:42Speaker 1: a job harder. Prick, So you fucked up your ankle,
- 26:46Speaker 1: so you've had a kind of a fucked up ankle
- 26:48Speaker 1: ever since. That would seem inconsistent with elite sport. Plus
- 26:53Speaker 1: plus you know, not feeding your body properly for years
- 26:57Speaker 1: and years, plus putting toxic shit in your body for
- 27:01Speaker 1: years and years and years, and then you know a
- 27:05Speaker 1: few other probably medical things that we might not mention.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I don't know. That's more up to you than me.
- 27:09Speaker 1: But how on earth did you even?
- 27:12Speaker 2: Like?
- 27:13Speaker 1: This gives people hope that you can have a body
- 27:15Speaker 1: that's that kind of broken and get back to the
- 27:19Speaker 1: point where you know, like when I see you now,
- 27:23Speaker 1: you look like you look like an athlete. I'm like,
- 27:26Speaker 1: how the fuck does he look like this? It's like,
- 27:29Speaker 1: you look no disrespect to other fifty four year olds.
- 27:32Speaker 1: But if I lined up one hundred and fifty four
- 27:34Speaker 1: year olds random, you would be in the top two
- 27:37Speaker 1: or three. Maybe you would be the top one, just
- 27:39Speaker 1: in terms of health, wellness, fitness, performance. I'm not talking
- 27:43Speaker 1: about you know, like you know, we're not talking about esthetics. No,
- 27:48Speaker 1: I just mean we're not talking from an ego point
- 27:50Speaker 1: of view. No, you're beautiful. Shout out to all the
- 27:54Speaker 1: beautiful people like Nick. My mum would say head like
- 27:58Speaker 1: a robber's dog. But anyway, that's what I would never
- 28:04Speaker 1: say that though. But so what what was the journey
- 28:10Speaker 1: from from? Like or bits and pieces of the journey
- 28:14Speaker 1: to get in the shape that you're in now?
- 28:18Speaker 4: Oh you know what it really all began, if we
- 28:24Speaker 4: trace it back, It began with your good self, mister Harms.
- 28:28Speaker 4: I remember coming to see you after we've done some
- 28:32Speaker 4: radio together. This is about fifteen years ago, I think
- 28:35Speaker 4: maybe even longer, and I came to see you because,
- 28:39Speaker 4: you know, I wanted to try and start to get
- 28:41Speaker 4: in shap I was overweight, I was, you know, like
- 28:44Speaker 4: I was not going that well even though I was,
- 28:47Speaker 4: you know, I changed my life in a lot of
- 28:50Speaker 4: other areas that was certainly seem to be the next thing.
- 28:53Speaker 4: And I remember you sitting there talking to me about
- 28:58Speaker 4: my relationship with food and how that's something that needed
- 29:01Speaker 4: to change and need to change that psychological relationship that
- 29:04Speaker 4: I have with food. And you also started helping me
- 29:09Speaker 4: to train a little bit, and that's where it all
- 29:12Speaker 4: began for me, you know. And I started to chip
- 29:15Speaker 4: away at my fitness and my health and slowly but surely,
- 29:18Speaker 4: it's taken me a long time, slowly but surely I've
- 29:22Speaker 4: transformed my body. The first transformation was back then, and
- 29:26Speaker 4: it happened over about I don't know, maybe a one
- 29:29Speaker 4: or two year period, and I lost all the weight
- 29:32Speaker 4: that I had on and I was doing a fair
- 29:34Speaker 4: bit of running and stuff. And I remember you used
- 29:36Speaker 4: to tell me about the runs you used to do
- 29:38Speaker 4: and you sort of land somewhere at an airport and
- 29:40Speaker 4: had two hours between flights, you'd be out and running
- 29:42Speaker 4: around the airport.
- 29:43Speaker 1: And I absolutely did. But I was an idiot. I
- 29:47Speaker 1: was an addict, just a different.
- 29:49Speaker 4: Addiction powers from evil to good, you know.
- 29:53Speaker 1: But it is funny, though, and this is not being disrespectful,
- 29:56Speaker 1: but when i'd expect clean in inverted commons, they often
- 30:00Speaker 1: get addicted to something else, do you know what I mean?
- 30:03Speaker 1: Like exercise or food or lollies or I remember the
- 30:07Speaker 1: ox when he got clean and inverted commas from gambling
- 30:13Speaker 1: working with him at sen and he went from not
- 30:17Speaker 1: smoking having like fifty a day, and then he got
- 30:21Speaker 1: off those, and then he was having twenty five coffees
- 30:23Speaker 1: a day, and then he got off that I don't
- 30:25Speaker 1: know if this is the right order, And he'd sit
- 30:28Speaker 1: in the studio on air with like a kilogram bag
- 30:31Speaker 1: of lollies. So then it's sugar became the thing. It's
- 30:34Speaker 1: like that personality is a motherfucker, because even though you
- 30:39Speaker 1: can change your behaviors and your habits, it's just that
- 30:45Speaker 1: drive for that dopamine release that you know, you just
- 30:51Speaker 1: you kind of just find it somewhere else. So maybe
- 30:53Speaker 1: part of that for you now is boxing right.
- 30:56Speaker 4: One hundred percent of I mean, you know, it's a
- 30:58Speaker 4: well known fact for us, those of us in the
- 31:01Speaker 4: recovery community all over the planet, by the way, millions
- 31:04Speaker 4: of us, is that we know emphatically that addiction is
- 31:08Speaker 4: not curable, right, There is no cure for addictions. So
- 31:12Speaker 4: what we do is we arrest it. We arrest it,
- 31:15Speaker 4: and then we we shift our our kind of tendencies
- 31:23Speaker 4: and our focus, our focus and our faulty patterns. We
- 31:27Speaker 4: just try and direct them to areas that are way
- 31:31Speaker 4: more healthy. And it's amazing what can be achieved if
- 31:34Speaker 4: an addict gets recovering. And this is you know, I
- 31:37Speaker 4: need to sort of mention this too, especially with my boxing.
- 31:41Speaker 4: One of the one of the superpowers that I have
- 31:44Speaker 4: in boxing is that I'm a recovering addict. What does
- 31:46Speaker 4: that mean, Well, it means I'm disciplined, means I'm completely focused,
- 31:51Speaker 4: I'm obsessed, and I'm relentless because I can direct all
- 31:58Speaker 4: of my energy to it, and I I don't have
- 32:00Speaker 4: blowouts on food, and I don't get on the piss
- 32:03Speaker 4: because I don't drink, and I train within an inch
- 32:08Speaker 4: of its life relentlessly and consistently, and it produces results.
- 32:16Speaker 4: The results just come if you do that. And it's
- 32:20Speaker 4: my addictive nature that I'm using in a positive way
- 32:24Speaker 4: that's helped me to do that. And as I said,
- 32:26Speaker 4: you know at the beginning of this that addictive nature.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Isn't it funny that addictive nature has helped me to
- 32:32Speaker 4: find that to uncover who I am. Yes, even though
- 32:36Speaker 4: I used it for a long time to block who
- 32:38Speaker 4: I was, because that's what addictions about. Addictions about blocking
- 32:43Speaker 4: facing what I suspect of myself because I suspect that
- 32:48Speaker 4: I'm not good enough, that I don't fit in, and
- 32:51Speaker 4: that I'm inferior, and so I need to shift what
- 32:56Speaker 4: I think your perception is of me. That's what addiction is.
- 33:00Speaker 4: It's shifting your perception of me, so you don't say
- 33:04Speaker 4: the truth.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I think you've spoken about this, But obviously for a
- 33:09Speaker 1: lot of people, I mean there are different drivers and
- 33:13Speaker 1: different reasons and different contexts that people fall into addiction.
- 33:17Speaker 1: For one of the better expression, but a lot of
- 33:21Speaker 1: a lot of addiction, or some of addiction is about
- 33:24Speaker 1: avoiding feelings and avoiding thoughts of just like I take
- 33:29Speaker 1: this all of a sudden, I don't have to deal
- 33:31Speaker 1: with that. You know, the problem is still there, but
- 33:33Speaker 1: I'm not stressed about it anymore. I'm not. But now
- 33:38Speaker 1: so we go all these years later, So you're a
- 33:40Speaker 1: recovering addict still with these addictive tendencies. I mean, you're
- 33:44Speaker 1: still Mike Hall. Yeah, right. You behave differently, you choose differently.
- 33:48Speaker 1: You've got a different lifestyle, you've got new habits, you've
- 33:51Speaker 1: got a different structure, you've got a different purpose and
- 33:54Speaker 1: a different focus. But still you must have to be
- 33:59Speaker 1: a where of not becoming a rational around training and boxing.
- 34:06Speaker 1: And because even that, it's like, I know there was
- 34:09Speaker 1: a time when for me training was an addiction in
- 34:12Speaker 1: a bad way, you know, like when you said running
- 34:16Speaker 1: around an airport. The backstory to that is I got
- 34:19Speaker 1: to I had this rule for years that I had
- 34:22Speaker 1: to run every day, and I mean every and if
- 34:25Speaker 1: I didn't run every day, I would have I don't
- 34:28Speaker 1: know what I would do, but obviously got through that,
- 34:30Speaker 1: but it was totally an addiction, and I would feel depressed,
- 34:34Speaker 1: I would hate myself, I would all of these things.
- 34:37Speaker 1: So I remember flying from Melbourne to LA and I
- 34:41Speaker 1: remember not like figuring out the time from when I
- 34:44Speaker 1: left home to I got to Melbourne airport to getting
- 34:49Speaker 1: on the plane, sitting there for fourteen hours whatever then
- 34:52Speaker 1: and I'm like, fuck, I'm going to have about half
- 34:55Speaker 1: an hour. Like if I'm not running within half an hour,
- 34:58Speaker 1: I'm not going to fit in a run within twenty
- 35:00Speaker 1: four hours. I know it's totally irrational, and some people
- 35:04Speaker 1: go you, I'm like, oh, yeah, I was irrational as fuck.
- 35:07Speaker 1: So I literally got changed five minutes after I got
- 35:12Speaker 1: because I had a layover. I was going to Louisiana,
- 35:16Speaker 1: and I had like two hours to wait, and yeah,
- 35:20Speaker 1: I ran. I ran out the fucking front door of
- 35:24Speaker 1: the airport. I ran through that lax car port car park,
- 35:29Speaker 1: just sucked in all the carbon monoxide equal to what
- 35:33Speaker 1: I'd ever consumed in my life. And I ran for
- 35:37Speaker 1: an hour and I literally at times was almost just
- 35:39Speaker 1: running in circles because you couldn't go that far, you know,
- 35:43Speaker 1: I'm running, and I'm like and then when I finished,
- 35:47Speaker 1: this is how I know I was an addict. Oh,
- 35:49Speaker 1: it was just like this overwhelm of relief and all
- 35:52Speaker 1: the anxiety went, so, you know, and then oh god,
- 35:56Speaker 1: I've done it now I don't have to do it
- 35:58Speaker 1: for and I knew from then I'd be fine because
- 36:01Speaker 1: I've mapped it. Like, yeah, so anything, even healthy things,
- 36:06Speaker 1: can become mentally and emotionally unhealthy depending on our relationship
- 36:11Speaker 1: with that thing.
- 36:12Speaker 4: Right, absolutely absolutely, And yeah, look, I mean I still
- 36:18Speaker 4: you know, one of the outstanding characteristics of addiction is
- 36:22Speaker 4: you know, defective or poor impulse control, and and and
- 36:28Speaker 4: you know, like a really sort of messy judgment, you know,
- 36:31Speaker 4: and and so those things are still very very much
- 36:34Speaker 4: damaged within me, you know, and It takes a lot
- 36:37Speaker 4: of work for me too, you know, and I've got
- 36:40Speaker 4: to put many sort of strategies in place to help
- 36:43Speaker 4: control that that impulse and that poor judgment and you
- 36:49Speaker 4: know all that sort of stuff. So yeah, it takes
- 36:51Speaker 4: a it can be a bit of a job, but
- 36:52Speaker 4: it's it's worth it.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Though, do you think do you think now about when
- 36:59Speaker 1: you hang up the glove, Like, because you love competing,
- 37:04Speaker 1: I know you've got a fight coming up very soon.
- 37:06Speaker 1: If you could have a fight every weekend, I think
- 37:08Speaker 1: you'd fucking do it. But like, there's going to come
- 37:13Speaker 1: a time where, for a myriad of reasons, it's just
- 37:16Speaker 1: intelligent to stop getting punched in the face. I know
- 37:20Speaker 1: you do more punching than you get punched as a rule,
- 37:23Speaker 1: but still beautiful. So you know, well look at you,
- 37:25Speaker 1: Brad Pitt, you motherfucker. But just trying to anticipate that,
- 37:31Speaker 1: deal with that and transition into that whatever that is
- 37:36Speaker 1: in a healthy way. Like I remember when I got
- 37:39Speaker 1: out of personal training kind of officially when I sold,
- 37:43Speaker 1: When I got out of all of my gyms, right,
- 37:46Speaker 1: I had and I thought I couldn't wait for it
- 37:48Speaker 1: because I just wanted to do other shit, And I'm like, oh,
- 37:50Speaker 1: if I have to adjust another bike seat or go
- 37:53Speaker 1: three more, two more, one more again, I fucking hate it. Right,
- 37:57Speaker 1: But when I got out, I missed it so so much,
- 38:01Speaker 1: Like there was just this gaping chasm and all I
- 38:04Speaker 1: wanted to do was open another gym. It took me.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I'd been doing that for thirty years. Yeah, it's like
- 38:14Speaker 1: you need to.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Yeah, there's got to be a transition out, doesn't.
- 38:17Speaker 1: The one hundred percent And you need to be mentally
- 38:20Speaker 1: and ready emotionally ready for that, you know. And I
- 38:23Speaker 1: think a lot of people even though it's frustrating and hard,
- 38:27Speaker 1: Like a friend of mine just withdrew from they were
- 38:31Speaker 1: having some challenges and they withdrew from. Of course, they're
- 38:36Speaker 1: doing a degree that they're doing that's been going on
- 38:39Speaker 1: for three or four years, and nearly at the finish line,
- 38:42Speaker 1: just went, oh fuck, could I hate this? It's not
- 38:44Speaker 1: worth it. I hate it so much. They withdrew and
- 38:48Speaker 1: like now four weeks later, absolutely devastated. All they wanted
- 38:53Speaker 1: to do was stop doing it. Yeah, now they hate
- 38:56Speaker 1: themselves that they stop doing it.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I understand. I completely understand, and I've had
- 39:03Speaker 4: lots of thoughts. I mean, you know, the sport that
- 39:05Speaker 4: I'm doing, as Tiff knows all too well, I mean,
- 39:08Speaker 4: it's extremely dangerous, especially as you get older. I mean
- 39:10Speaker 4: is at any age, but as you get older, like
- 39:13Speaker 4: you said, you know, like we're talking about two humans
- 39:15Speaker 4: that are in there, and you know, you are focused
- 39:20Speaker 4: on doing damage to another human and they're focused on that,
- 39:23Speaker 4: and we're testing our skills. So there does come a
- 39:27Speaker 4: time where you know it's it is silly to keep
- 39:30Speaker 4: going and the damage and we could cross a line
- 39:33Speaker 4: where maybe there's no turning back, you know, in terms
- 39:37Speaker 4: of physical damage. And look, I'm continually monitoring that myself,
- 39:42Speaker 4: and I've been asking this question myself for a couple
- 39:46Speaker 4: of years now, like how am I going to stop?
- 39:49Speaker 4: And when am I going to stop? And when am
- 39:51Speaker 4: I going to be ready? And I had to get
- 39:53Speaker 4: to that point of just going, well, I don't know
- 39:56Speaker 4: when I'm going to be ready, but I just know
- 39:58Speaker 4: that I'm not ready yet. And then and now though,
- 40:02Speaker 4: I'm moving into a phase where I'm looking for the signs,
- 40:05Speaker 4: you know, and and one of the signs is that yes,
- 40:08Speaker 4: I've got a fight coming up. On the eighteenth of April,
- 40:10Speaker 4: at the Q Room and it's for the state title again, Okay,
- 40:16Speaker 4: but it doesn't really excite me, right, But what excites
- 40:21Speaker 4: me is the guy that I'm fighting. Because the guy
- 40:23Speaker 4: that I'm fighting has always been two or three steps
- 40:27Speaker 4: ahead of me in development. He's what I would call
- 40:29Speaker 4: the top of.
- 40:30Speaker 1: The tree for me, Just for me, he'd be the
- 40:33Speaker 1: top of the tree.
- 40:34Speaker 4: But he injured himself a year ago and he was
- 40:36Speaker 4: out for a year. And I've kept fighting, and I
- 40:39Speaker 4: think the gap between us has closedow so, and so
- 40:44Speaker 4: that is the exciting part about this fight for me.
- 40:47Speaker 4: That's made me hungry for it again, and that's made
- 40:50Speaker 4: me double down on what I'm doing, my preparation and
- 40:53Speaker 4: everything else. But after that, you know, it's funny how
- 40:59Speaker 4: things start to happen, and you know when you start
- 41:00Speaker 4: to ask these questions. And my youngest daughter, Faith, who's twenty,
- 41:05Speaker 4: I got this phone call about month and a half again,
- 41:08Speaker 4: I said my dad. I said, yes, Love said, can
- 41:12Speaker 4: you teach me boxing? I said, are you serious? She
- 41:16Speaker 4: said yeah? I said right, meet me at the gym.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Fit Life, Jim Infirnitry Goali meet me at the gym
- 41:22Speaker 4: on Saturday morning at ten o'clock and I'll start training
- 41:25Speaker 4: it and no winging and any bullshit, okay, dad. So
- 41:29Speaker 4: she met me there at ten o'clock the next weekend,
- 41:32Speaker 4: and she fucking loves it, loves it. So I started
- 41:36Speaker 4: training her. And then another girl that I fight with,
- 41:40Speaker 4: she's a fighter as well. She's forty years old. Her
- 41:42Speaker 4: names Jasmine, So Jazzy. We've been through a lot of
- 41:47Speaker 4: our boxing journey together, and Jazzy, you know, I wanted
- 41:51Speaker 4: to help, you know, sort of technically with their boxing
- 41:53Speaker 4: and that sort of stuff. And so I started training
- 41:55Speaker 4: Jazzy on a Saturday. So next thing, I've got Jazzy
- 41:58Speaker 4: and I've got Faith, my daughter that I'm training on
- 42:01Speaker 4: Saturday mornings. And it just so happens about two or
- 42:04Speaker 4: so weeks ago, there's another young girl at the gym,
- 42:08Speaker 4: Shane and Jimmy is just turned fifteen years old and
- 42:12Speaker 4: just wants to fight. Wow, let's see so much potential
- 42:16Speaker 4: in her. She's so much potential. And so I said, well, Shana,
- 42:20Speaker 4: you better be here Saturday morning, no bullshit, be ready
- 42:24Speaker 4: to rock and roll. And next thing, I've got a
- 42:27Speaker 4: team of three.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Look at you, dude, You're going to be the next
- 42:31Speaker 1: cast tomato. Yeah, well, you know, it's.
- 42:35Speaker 4: The transition out of fighting myself, you know.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you'll become a coach, so you're still going to
- 42:40Speaker 1: be living and breathing, and that'll probably keep you on
- 42:43Speaker 1: some kind of life support, emotional life support. I wanted
- 42:50Speaker 1: this is a weird question, but I've just been interested
- 42:53Speaker 1: about this. I don't think I've ever asked you, but
- 42:55Speaker 1: when did you When was your last trip, your last tree?
- 43:00Speaker 1: What age were you when you left Her Majesty's back
- 43:03Speaker 1: then it was Her Majesty's care for the final time.
- 43:06Speaker 1: How old were you I was?
- 43:13Speaker 4: I think I was twenty eight? Okay, yeah, either twenty
- 43:17Speaker 4: eight or twenty nine.
- 43:19Speaker 1: And the first time you went into juvie was like
- 43:22Speaker 1: what you were fifteen or something?
- 43:24Speaker 4: Or first time I was in like children's court and
- 43:26Speaker 4: was assigned probation offices I was. I think I was fourteen?
- 43:30Speaker 1: Right, well done, Well you were, you were consistent, gave
- 43:34Speaker 1: it a crack. But so I remember you saying to me,
- 43:37Speaker 1: so like, for fourteen years, in and out, on and off,
- 43:40Speaker 1: you were kind of in that kind of space ish yep.
- 43:45Speaker 1: I remember you saying to me something like and this
- 43:49Speaker 1: was probably ten years ago. I remember where it was.
- 43:52Speaker 1: It was upstairs, was at my gym, it was anyway.
- 43:58Speaker 1: You said something like, I'm like a twelve year old
- 44:03Speaker 1: trapped in a forty year old body because you missed
- 44:06Speaker 1: a lot of development. You missed a lot of just
- 44:09Speaker 1: being an adult and making decisions and cooking your dinner
- 44:13Speaker 1: and paying the rent and doing all the things that
- 44:16Speaker 1: kids like. You missed a lot of that, which is
- 44:18Speaker 1: nobody's fault but your own, of course, But you missed
- 44:21Speaker 1: a lot of that normal kind of teenage young adults
- 44:27Speaker 1: not so young adult development, and so you've almost had
- 44:32Speaker 1: to learn how to be a grown up when you
- 44:34Speaker 1: were thirty. I was in a time warp. I was
- 44:37Speaker 1: in a time warp.
- 44:38Speaker 4: Imagine somebody in the early two thousands still wearing fucking
- 44:46Speaker 4: footy shorts from the nineteen seventies with a footy jumper
- 44:51Speaker 4: with collars on it. That's kind of what it's like,
- 44:55Speaker 4: you know, Like, what did all this change about thirty
- 44:59Speaker 4: years ago? Mate? I was out of touch with everything,
- 45:03Speaker 4: you know, and and emotionally I was a thirty year
- 45:09Speaker 4: old man, but emotionally I was probably eleven or twelve.
- 45:16Speaker 4: So in every concept, in every way, you can think of,
- 45:21Speaker 4: you know, like I'm talking tantrums. I'm talking like screaming tantrums,
- 45:28Speaker 4: throwing your mobile phone because they just come out there.
- 45:31Speaker 4: And I couldn't believe I had this mobile phone in
- 45:34Speaker 4: the end, and Telstra weren't being nice to me, so
- 45:37Speaker 4: I smashed my phone. He kicked it down the road
- 45:40Speaker 4: and abused everyone that came near me. So, you know,
- 45:44Speaker 4: there was all these tantrums. There was just you know,
- 45:47Speaker 4: fall in love at the drop of a hat and
- 45:49Speaker 4: then be obsessed with people, and it was just it
- 45:53Speaker 4: was madness, you know, madness. I was out of control
- 45:57Speaker 4: emotionally and psychological and an image, unable to cope with
- 46:04Speaker 4: anything at all in life because I didn't have the
- 46:07Speaker 4: emotional or psychological tools or capabilities. And what I've had
- 46:12Speaker 4: to do in my life in recovery. So when I
- 46:14Speaker 4: say my life in recovery, I meant from thirty to
- 46:17Speaker 4: fifty four about to turn fifty five, is I've had
- 46:22Speaker 4: to learn how to live in the world as maybe
- 46:26Speaker 4: people learned that weren't addicts and seemed to be able
- 46:30Speaker 4: to do it naturally through the course of time. So
- 46:33Speaker 4: I've had to relive all of that and it's taking me.
- 46:36Speaker 4: I'm about to turn fifty five. Look here, I am
- 46:39Speaker 4: boxing and doing what I'm doing, and I still feel
- 46:42Speaker 4: like i'm you know, I wish. I wish, oh man,
- 46:45Speaker 4: I wish that I could be twenty five again, because
- 46:47Speaker 4: I just want to be a boxer and an athlete.
- 46:49Speaker 4: That's all I want to do. I don't want do
- 46:51Speaker 4: anything else. Some boxer and an athlete. And in my mind,
- 46:56Speaker 4: I still am, but it's going to end because my
- 47:00Speaker 4: body just can't keep doing it.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you come out of that that world
- 47:08Speaker 1: of incarceration and you step into the world where you
- 47:11Speaker 1: can do whatever you want, when you want, with no screws,
- 47:14Speaker 1: no one looking over your shoulder, no one telling you
- 47:16Speaker 1: when to eat, when to shit, when to shower up
- 47:19Speaker 1: like you've just you've gone from zero freedom to complete freedom.
- 47:26Speaker 1: That's just something that must be very hard to handle
- 47:30Speaker 1: without blowing up.
- 47:32Speaker 4: Well, it's confusing because I don't know what to do, yes,
- 47:36Speaker 4: you know, and I've got nothing to do. But I
- 47:39Speaker 4: want to have something to do, but I don't have
- 47:40Speaker 4: anything to do, and I don't know what to do, you.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Know, And it's just confusing at first, and it's almost
- 47:47Speaker 1: like that's the stage with I don't mean this sound funny.
- 47:52Speaker 1: That's the stage where you need a parent. Yeah you
- 47:57Speaker 1: know what I mean, right, Like if we were friends,
- 48:01Speaker 1: then I would have been your shudo dad for a while.
- 48:04Speaker 1: You still are up all the way, but yeah, do
- 48:09Speaker 1: you know what's funny about you is whenever I'm with you,
- 48:14Speaker 1: like you are what you are. You're this tough guy
- 48:16Speaker 1: that you've owned multiple businesses, you've done well, you've worked
- 48:21Speaker 1: in radio, You've fucking won state titles, national titles, You've
- 48:24Speaker 1: done all this shit. But when you and I are together,
- 48:29Speaker 1: you're almost like the student. It's like fucking mister Miyagi
- 48:33Speaker 1: and the karate kid. You just sit there and soak
- 48:36Speaker 1: it up. I know, you know. And I'm not trying
- 48:39Speaker 1: to fucking tell you what to do or how to
- 48:41Speaker 1: do it, because yesterday I went to you, dude, you
- 48:43Speaker 1: are You've been talking to me about writing a book
- 48:46Speaker 1: and getting on stage for fucking ten years and you're
- 48:49Speaker 1: just kidding yourself and you're never going to do it.
- 48:51Speaker 1: In a minute, you'll be sixty and you won't have
- 48:53Speaker 1: done it, and the gates closed, and you're like so,
- 48:57Speaker 1: and I went, this is what I think you should
- 48:59Speaker 1: do for you and you went, Okay, I mean let's
- 49:05Speaker 1: do it. Want sign Yeah, because I don't want to
- 49:07Speaker 1: see you waste your talent, you know, like, and I'm
- 49:10Speaker 1: only saying that because I know you want to do it.
- 49:12Speaker 1: It's not my idea, it's your idea. Yeah. My idea is, well,
- 49:16Speaker 1: let's fucking start bugger lugs. And so this is what
- 49:19Speaker 1: I'm excited to thank you. Yeah, I know I've been
- 49:22Speaker 1: wasting your talent. I'm such a greeting I've been hijacking
- 49:26Speaker 1: that fucking talent. But this is what I'm excited talking about.
- 49:29Speaker 1: You know, being late starter is going all right, Well,
- 49:32Speaker 1: at fifty five, we're going to open the door on
- 49:36Speaker 1: developing Mick as a speaker, just like TIFFs opened the
- 49:39Speaker 1: door a few years ago. And she's a different person
- 49:42Speaker 1: and like her knowledge, her skill, her stage awareness, her
- 49:46Speaker 1: it's like she's made ten years progress in three years.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 49:50Speaker 1: Yeah, And so I'm excited to see because you are
- 49:54Speaker 1: You're already in front of groups all the time because
- 49:56Speaker 1: you work in you know, rehab, and you're always telling
- 50:03Speaker 1: you stories and you're obviously very comforty and comfortable on
- 50:06Speaker 1: a podcast and blah, blah blah blah blah. But then
- 50:08Speaker 1: to create a version of you that's going to stand
- 50:13Speaker 1: on a stage in a corporate environment where no one
- 50:16Speaker 1: necessarily knows you or likes you. They don't dislike you,
- 50:19Speaker 1: they just don't fucking know you, and they don't care
- 50:22Speaker 1: if you crash and burn or you're brilliant. They're just
- 50:25Speaker 1: sitting there, you know. So it's a different environment, it's
- 50:29Speaker 1: a different energy, it's a different context, it's a different
- 50:32Speaker 1: skill set. But I know, like when you saw that
- 50:35Speaker 1: fifteen year old and you went, oh, this girl could
- 50:37Speaker 1: be a great athlete because you just know she's got
- 50:42Speaker 1: I look at you and there's no one like you
- 50:45Speaker 1: doing what Tiff does. But there's no one you know,
- 50:50Speaker 1: And she's got a different kind of energy and story
- 50:55Speaker 1: on stage as well, like because she's not coming in
- 50:58Speaker 1: and going I'm a gurg at business, right yea, And
- 51:02Speaker 1: so she's got a different angle. But your angle is
- 51:04Speaker 1: like everybody is addicted to something, you know, and if
- 51:07Speaker 1: you're not an addict, well you definitely know ten so
- 51:12Speaker 1: and there's probably four in your life, not necessarily drug
- 51:14Speaker 1: addicts or alcoholics, but you know, so I'm excited to
- 51:19Speaker 1: see that development, and now that we've spoken about it publicly,
- 51:22Speaker 1: you better fucking do the work made.
- 51:24Speaker 4: I will be doing the work I am. I am absolutely,
- 51:27Speaker 4: you know it terrifies me. I want to do it.
- 51:30Speaker 4: It's like a lot of things. You love the idea, right,
- 51:33Speaker 4: but then when the reality comes, where do you stand now?
- 51:37Speaker 4: One of the things through boxing that I wanted to
- 51:39Speaker 4: prove to myself is that, yeah, I can have the
- 51:42Speaker 4: great idea that when reality comes, I want to be
- 51:45Speaker 4: the guy that says I'm doing this and I do
- 51:48Speaker 4: it anyway, no matter how scared I am whatever, and
- 51:51Speaker 4: I'm I'm dedicated.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Man.
- 51:53Speaker 4: I want to do it.
- 51:54Speaker 2: You know.
- 51:54Speaker 4: I just know it's in me, It's in my heart
- 51:57Speaker 4: that it's certainly a direction that I need to go now.
- 52:00Speaker 4: But I've needed someone like Uncle Harps to, you know,
- 52:06Speaker 4: wrap some structure around me and go, hey, Dick, here,
- 52:10Speaker 4: this is fucking do it. And I'll help you put
- 52:15Speaker 4: that together and push that along.
- 52:19Speaker 1: I'm just going to say, we'll see, yeah, Okay, we'll see.
- 52:24Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 52:25Speaker 4: He's so hard, Tiffany, he's so hard on me.
- 52:27Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, good story mate, it's good on a podcast.
- 52:30Speaker 1: We'll see get back to me in a year, Tiff,
- 52:33Speaker 1: you look like he's all flat. Now, well, am I
- 52:36Speaker 1: being honest with you?
- 52:37Speaker 3: That's why you're chosen?
- 52:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you know I tell people all the time if
- 52:42Speaker 1: you want to cheer, if you want to cheer squad
- 52:45Speaker 1: or fucking someone to tell you you're amazing when you're not,
- 52:48Speaker 1: don't come to me. I'll tell you the ship that's real. Like,
- 52:53Speaker 1: you can't be objective about you, You're you. You look
- 52:57Speaker 1: like you're going to say something in there a minute
- 52:59Speaker 1: or two ago. Am I getting that wrong?
- 53:01Speaker 3: Now?
- 53:02Speaker 1: How's your development? Like, do you feel like you've developed
- 53:06Speaker 1: a lot in the last three years since you kind
- 53:08Speaker 1: of or however long it is kind of opened the
- 53:11Speaker 1: door on standing in front of humans for money. Obviously
- 53:14Speaker 1: it's much more than that, but you know, ultimately it's
- 53:17Speaker 1: a job as well.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think it got to the point for
- 53:20Speaker 2: me where I was like why I wanted to learn
- 53:24Speaker 2: about the things that I didn't know that I didn't know,
- 53:27Speaker 2: you know, so I did courses with other people, I
- 53:29Speaker 2: went and hung around other people, doing things different ways
- 53:33Speaker 2: than what's comfortable to me. And even this last speaking
- 53:38Speaker 2: engagement up in Cans, like there was an amazing opportunity,
- 53:41Speaker 2: and I wasn't happy with it, but I didn't fail.
- 53:45Speaker 2: And I was like, well, that's the best outcome to
- 53:47Speaker 2: have some lessons, not fail in the middle of having
- 53:51Speaker 2: some lessons and some new environments to have to process.
- 53:55Speaker 1: That's right. And you you reef you can. You're not
- 53:58Speaker 1: pretending you did awesome when I think you rated yourself
- 54:01Speaker 1: for six or something or whatever. So you didn't do bad,
- 54:04Speaker 1: you didn't do great, but you go away going wow,
- 54:07Speaker 1: I've got a really good experience. I've got lots of
- 54:09Speaker 1: interaction with other speakers. I know what I do differently.
- 54:13Speaker 1: It's like losing a fight, right, or it's like whatever,
- 54:16Speaker 1: you know, where you go. Fuck. I learned twenty five things.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Now I've got to operationalize those put them into practice,
- 54:22Speaker 1: Like you can't get better by not speaking. And that's
- 54:26Speaker 1: part of the thing, is that there's that emotional and
- 54:28Speaker 1: psychological vulnerability where you are literally opening up to hundreds
- 54:34Speaker 1: of people that you don't know, knowing that you might
- 54:38Speaker 1: fuck up. Right, that's fucking bravery. I mean that is coage,
- 54:43Speaker 1: you know, And I think that's that's the thing that
- 54:46Speaker 1: I put up a thing yesterday which said something like
- 54:49Speaker 1: being static in a dynamic world doesn't It doesn't work.
- 54:53Speaker 1: It's a problem, right, And the thing is that we
- 54:56Speaker 1: do live in a dynamic world. Everything's changing, things, things
- 55:00Speaker 1: happen all the time that we don't want to the
- 55:02Speaker 1: world's uncertain, uncomfortable, unfamiliar, all that shit, all the uns
- 55:05Speaker 1: as I talk about, that's not gonna avoid you. So
- 55:10Speaker 1: you need to know that there's going to be shit
- 55:12Speaker 1: coming and you're going to be ready or not. And
- 55:14Speaker 1: how do you be ready? Will you train well in
- 55:17Speaker 1: this context? How do you train? Will you start speaking
- 55:19Speaker 1: to groups? And you might be one out of ten?
- 55:21Speaker 1: I talked about my first ever twenty six I was
- 55:25Speaker 1: got paid fifty bucks in a timbard to talk to
- 55:27Speaker 1: all these blokes. They fucking hated me, like they couldn't
- 55:31Speaker 1: get out of there quick enough. I was dog shit.
- 55:34Speaker 1: I got paid fifty bucks and I fucking loved it.
- 55:37Speaker 1: I loved it. I'm like, this is the best I knew.
- 55:41Speaker 1: I was shit because every bit of while I didn't
- 55:44Speaker 1: get feedback. They just brushed past me. And I'm like, Okay,
- 55:48Speaker 1: I was crap, but I don't know why. Like with you, Mick,
- 55:52Speaker 1: I know I can win a title. I was like,
- 55:54Speaker 1: I know I can do this. I know I'm shit
- 55:56Speaker 1: right now. And that's not self clothing, that's self awareness.
- 56:00Speaker 1: Good now. No, it's like, could I go get a
- 56:02Speaker 1: jiu jitsu black belt if I wanted to commit for
- 56:05Speaker 1: ten years? Which I don't, But if I did, Yes,
- 56:09Speaker 1: would I be fucking horrible at it at the start?
- 56:12Speaker 1: Of course? Would I be somewhat shit in a year? Yes?
- 56:16Speaker 1: Would I have some skills an aptitude in two or
- 56:18Speaker 1: three yes, you know, and then maybe in five years
- 56:21Speaker 1: I'm a little bit dangerous than in ten years I'm
- 56:23Speaker 1: a black belt. But I've got to go through either
- 56:27Speaker 1: the literal white belt or the metaphoric white belt in
- 56:29Speaker 1: your case, building businesses, becoming a boxer, tip, becoming a speaker.
- 56:35Speaker 1: This is a stage, the white belt phases, the phase
- 56:38Speaker 1: that people want to avoid because everyone wants to look
- 56:40Speaker 1: good and be good. They want to be at the
- 56:43Speaker 1: top of the mountain. They just don't want to fucking climb.
- 56:46Speaker 1: They want to black belt for nothing. Yeah, it's like, dude,
- 56:49Speaker 1: it's like, yes, you suck. That doesn't mean you're a
- 56:52Speaker 1: bad human, that doesn't mean you're without potential, But you
- 56:56Speaker 1: can't you can't move past that level of skill or
- 56:59Speaker 1: confidence or competence without sucking and without being courageous. Yeah,
- 57:04Speaker 1: because it's you know, getting in a boxing ring. You
- 57:07Speaker 1: both know, I don't know, but it requires immense courage.
- 57:13Speaker 1: Like nobody, even even the champions, they don't get in
- 57:16Speaker 1: they're relaxed. I mean maybe the odd one. But you know,
- 57:19Speaker 1: I remember watching Tony Lockett one hundred years ago at
- 57:23Speaker 1: some Kilda. I shouldn't say this, but anyway, fuck it,
- 57:27Speaker 1: but I could tell you more, but I will say
- 57:31Speaker 1: he was very nervous before games and he was arguably,
- 57:36Speaker 1: well he's the greatest goalkicker of all time in the
- 57:38Speaker 1: AFL in one hundred and forty years of AFL, he's
- 57:42Speaker 1: the best full forward of all time. And I would
- 57:46Speaker 1: see him spew every second game before the game, so nervous,
- 57:51Speaker 1: so nervous. And this was when he was a champion,
- 57:55Speaker 1: you know, and like because he was scared or nervous
- 57:58Speaker 1: or all those normal human things. Yeah, then it would
- 58:02Speaker 1: go out there and be scared and courageous like encourage
- 58:09Speaker 1: It's well, you can only be courageous if you're scared. Yeah,
- 58:12Speaker 1: that's right. Like if it's comfortable, well, we don't require courage.
- 58:15Speaker 1: If there's no risk, we don't require courage. So correct, Well,
- 58:20Speaker 1: it's been a good chat. It's we're an hour in
- 58:24Speaker 1: if any parting words, I know we've left you out
- 58:27Speaker 1: of a bit, but any wisdom that you.
- 58:28Speaker 2: Want to and I always love to sit back and
- 58:32Speaker 2: just bask in a little boxing talk.
- 58:34Speaker 3: So thanks, Mick. That was a what would have.
- 58:37Speaker 1: To happen for you to get what would have to happen?
- 58:40Speaker 1: Sorry mix, sorry t if for you to have to
- 58:42Speaker 1: get back in the ring or is there no chance? Me? Yes?
- 58:47Speaker 2: Oh, just my energy right now, I'm just battling, not recovering,
- 58:52Speaker 2: Like I just want to get back to being able
- 58:54Speaker 2: to train, and I'm still battling that.
- 58:58Speaker 1: So your physical energy is shit at the mean super Yeah.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Occasionally I've gone and done a half an hour light
- 59:06Speaker 2: class every now and then and.
- 59:09Speaker 3: That just knocks me for six. You know, it's ridiculous,
- 59:13Speaker 3: It's really fucking annoying. If I'm honest, I'd be in
- 59:17Speaker 3: there at heartbeat.
- 59:18Speaker 1: Mick.
- 59:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I'd love you to come down to add Jim
- 59:22Speaker 4: and do a little bit of training with and a
- 59:25Speaker 4: little bit of sparrow with one of certainly one of
- 59:27Speaker 4: the girls, Jasmine actually one of our girls that we've
- 59:30Speaker 4: got down there. Would be just awesome to have someone
- 59:33Speaker 4: like you come down and give her some experience and
- 59:36Speaker 4: some her yeah, give us some training would be it
- 59:39Speaker 4: would be awesome. So if you ever ever you know,
- 59:42Speaker 4: up for coming down to fit life in Furniture Gully
- 59:45Speaker 4: at some stage, we'd love to have you and we'd
- 59:47Speaker 4: look after you.
- 59:48Speaker 3: I'm working on my recovery.
- 59:49Speaker 2: If someone out there wants to fix my energy, come
- 59:51Speaker 2: on in.
- 59:53Speaker 1: And all else fails. If that fails, you could teach
- 59:55Speaker 1: you how to do a front double bicep and a
- 59:57Speaker 1: lat spread.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: What you know, I'm not too good at that though, haf.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: No, you're you're a little bit special when it comes
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: to doing the lat spread. Even when she does a
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: front double bicep. We're talk on bodybuilding now. Hey mate,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: it's been great to talk to you. Congrats, we appreciate you.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: You're a winner. And lets uh, let's see how this
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: speaking career unfolds over the next year or two.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: It's exciting.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: We'll see
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: Are you killing me
