- 0:00Father God, we thank you for tonight and the opportunity to
- 0:02be together. Thank you Lord for for today.
- 0:05Lord, you are a great God and you have given us the stay to
- 0:09live and our prayer would be that you would have been
- 0:12glorified in our lives. We think of where we are today
- 0:16and our walk with you and pray that the things that we learned
- 0:19tonight will enable us to live even closer to you in days and
- 0:24weeks and months ahead. We realize, Lord, that life is
- 0:28but a vapor. We don't last forever on this
- 0:31planet. We want to live for the glory of
- 0:34our Lord. So we just pray that the things
- 0:37that we learned this evening would stick with us and that our
- 0:41hearts should be challenged and changed.
- 0:43That Lord, you'd use us and our families to be a testimony for
- 0:47Your glory and that you use in the workplace to stand and
- 0:52represent You and our schools, our neighborhood, no matter
- 0:57where we're at. Father, we would stand strong on
- 1:00the truth of your word. And those who come in contact
- 1:03with us would know that Jesus Christ reigned supreme in our
- 1:07heart and life. That's our prayer.
- 1:09Father, in Jesus name, Amen. Take your Bible and turn with
- 1:14me, if you would, to Matthew chapter 5.
- 1:20Matthew chapter 5. You know, when I think about
- 1:23this sermon and I read it over and over again, I'm taken back
- 1:30by the fact that that we have the record of, of a sermon that
- 1:35Jesus preached. I know the whole Scripture is
- 1:41God inspired and God breathed. I understand that.
- 1:46And it's not that the, if you have a red letter edition, that
- 1:50the red letters are more inspired than the black letters.
- 1:53That's not the case. It's all inspired by by the
- 1:56Lord, but but to be able to see how he says what he says.
- 2:02So you are paralyzed or you are blind or you are lame or you are
- 2:06deaf or dumb and and you need healing.
- 2:11So you go to to this, this Carpenter, this Messiah like
- 2:18person, this individual who is sweeping all of Judea, all of
- 2:24Galilee, He's surrounded the capitalist, he's in Jerusalem,
- 2:28he's everywhere and you want to be healed.
- 2:31So you go to him and you are and you are in a Matthew chapter 4
- 2:36tells us that that a large crowd was following him and it talks
- 2:42about those regions that I just mentioned.
- 2:46They're in the thousands, not the hundreds.
- 2:51And they, they are all overwhelmed by what Christ has
- 2:55done. And yet Christ knows that at the
- 2:59heart of everything is, is their hearts that are not right with
- 3:04him. And so he's concerned about
- 3:07their spirituality, not their physicality.
- 3:12Although He's compassionate, kind, merciful, loving, and he
- 3:15heals them all, He's more concerned about their heart.
- 3:21That's his burden. And so while they're all there
- 3:24and they're all excited about being healed and they're all
- 3:27excited about being able to walk and run and see and hear and and
- 3:31everything is is better, life's good.
- 3:37He sits down and says, I want to tell you about real blessing,
- 3:40real joy, real contentment. Do you think life is good now?
- 3:46Wait till your heart is right. So He begins to talk to them
- 3:50about blessing. He offers them satisfaction, He
- 3:54offers them joy, He offers them contentment and goes through the
- 3:59Beatitudes in the 1st 12 verses of Matthew chapter 5.
- 4:03That's how He begins his sermon. He begins it with blessing.
- 4:07And yet it's unlike anything they had ever heard or or seen
- 4:11before. This is different and Christ
- 4:16knows it's different for them. So he lets them know that the
- 4:20people who live this way, that they become salt in the world
- 4:23that's decaying, they become light in the world that's dark.
- 4:27And then he says, do not think, do not imagine, don't even
- 4:35wonder whether or not I've come to fulfill the law of the
- 4:40prophets. I have, I've not come to abolish
- 4:43anything. I've, I've come to fulfill
- 4:46everything that Moses said, everything the prophet said,
- 4:52because I know that in the back of your mind you're thinking,
- 4:55what is he saying? Because what are you saying?
- 4:58We have not heard before because the, the tradition of Judaism
- 5:03has reigned supreme over the truth of the gospel.
- 5:09And so he says, I did not come to abolish what Moses said or
- 5:14what the prophet said. No, I came to fulfill it, so
- 5:17much so that you need to know that if, if your righteousness
- 5:23does not exceed those of your religious leaders, you'll never
- 5:29be a child of the king, which had to take them back in such a
- 5:36way that they were flabbergasted.
- 5:39What do you mean? Our righteousness exceed that of
- 5:41the scribes and Pharisees? They are holy men of God, but he
- 5:47says that their their righteousness was one that was
- 5:50was achieved humanly. But my righteousness is one
- 5:55that's that's accomplished divinely.
- 5:59It can only happen through me. And so while their righteousness
- 6:04is a bunch of about a bunch of do's and don'ts, my
- 6:07righteousness is that inward righteousness.
- 6:09It affects the heart. He knows that, so he begins with
- 6:15these six different illustrations to drive home the
- 6:20point that what is happening on the outside is not necessarily
- 6:25what's true on the inside, because he's all concerned about
- 6:29the heart. Man looks on the outward
- 6:32appearance, but God looks upon the heart.
- 6:34Solomon would say is a man thinks in his heart, so is he.
- 6:39He would go on to say guard your heart, because out of your heart
- 6:43flow all the issues of life. Everything about life comes from
- 6:47the inside. So guard your heart, protect
- 6:50your heart. So the Lord begins to attack the
- 6:55tradition that they've been taught, and he begins with the
- 7:01whole illustration of murder. Now you've heard that it was
- 7:04said you shall not murder. They were like, yeah, who does
- 7:09that? Not us, but I say unto you,
- 7:13those great but ologies of Scripture, no one says it better
- 7:18than Christ. But I say unto you, let me give
- 7:22you the real understanding of the law of God.
- 7:26You've been taught this to your tradition, but this is what the
- 7:29law of God really is all about. That if you have silent anger in
- 7:35your heart, if you have have a a spoken anger that proceeds from
- 7:41your heart, if you have a slanderous anger, hell is your
- 7:45destiny because you're a murderer on the inside.
- 7:52And then it comes to the illustration about adultery.
- 7:56You've heard that it was said you should not commit adultery.
- 7:59And they were like, of course not, we understand that we're
- 8:03not sleeping with somebody else's wife.
- 8:05We're not going to do that. Because you see, everything was
- 8:08about the externals for the religious establishment.
- 8:14As long as they didn't sleep with somebody else or murder
- 8:17somebody else, they were righteous, they were good, they
- 8:21had a good standing with God. But the Lord says it's not that
- 8:27way. In fact, let me read to you what
- 8:29He says. You've heard that it was said
- 8:32you shall not commit adultery, but I say to you that everyone
- 8:36who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed
- 8:39adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye makes you
- 8:43stumble, tear it out. Fill it from you, for it's
- 8:47better for you to lose 1 of the parts of your body than for your
- 8:50whole body to be thrown into hell.
- 8:53If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it
- 8:58from you, for it's better for you to lose 1 of the parts of
- 9:01your body, then for your whole body to go into hell.
- 9:09I mean, if you're on the northern slopes of the Sea of
- 9:12Galilee and you're hearing these things, it's contrary to what
- 9:17they've been taught. So our outline is the same as it
- 9:20was for murder and will be throughout the next 4
- 9:24illustrations that there is a rabbinical tradition you need to
- 9:27understand and then you need to understand the biblical teaching
- 9:33and then we'll get to the personal transformation.
- 9:35But that won't be till next Wednesday night this week.
- 9:39It's just a rabbinical teaching and the OR the rabbinical
- 9:43tradition and the biblical teaching.
- 9:48Christ is quoting the 7th commandment, and they would know
- 9:55it well because they wanted to abide by the law of Moses.
- 10:01And yet the rabbinical tradition was always focused on the deed
- 10:10and they would forget or forgo the desire.
- 10:18And so Christ wants to hit them in their hearts.
- 10:23He wants them to understand the reality of their sin, the
- 10:26depravity of their lives, the iniquity that reigns supreme,
- 10:31that the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked so they would
- 10:35not be deceived about the true condition of the inner man.
- 10:41You've heard that it was said you should not commit adultery.
- 10:45Why? Because adultery is punishable
- 10:47by murder. Read the book of Leviticus.
- 10:49Read the book of Deuteronomy, You commit adultery, you, you
- 10:52deserve death. And they didn't want to die, so
- 10:56they wouldn't commit the external act of adultery.
- 11:00It would be wrong to do that. And so they made sure that
- 11:03didn't happen. In fact, turn over to John
- 11:07chapter 8. You know the story.
- 11:12It's about the story of the woman caught in adultery.
- 11:15Very interesting about the story.
- 11:18Is that the man that she was in bed with was not brought before
- 11:24Jesus. In other words, it was a setup.
- 11:28They brought the woman, but not the man.
- 11:33It says in verse #1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives
- 11:35early in the morning. He he came again to the temple
- 11:38and all the people were coming to him, and he sat down and
- 11:41began to teach them. Scribes and the Pharisees
- 11:43brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in
- 11:47the center of the court, they said to him, Teacher, this woman
- 11:51has been caught in adultery. In the very act now in the law
- 11:55of Moses commanded us to stone such a woman.
- 11:58What then do you say here is Jesus teaching, and what he is
- 12:06teaching we do not know. But to the Pharisees and the
- 12:10scribes, they could care less what he was teaching.
- 12:14They had a point to make. We are followers of the law of
- 12:18Moses. Are you trying to discredit the
- 12:21authority of the Messiah? So they bring this woman who was
- 12:26caught in the act of adultery, she's in bed with this guy and
- 12:32they RIP her out of bed and bring her to the presence of of
- 12:35Christ. But not the man, just the woman.
- 12:42They were saying this testing him.
- 12:45It says in verse 6 said they might have grounds for accusing
- 12:50him, but Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the
- 12:55ground. Now interesting he doesn't tell
- 12:58us what he writes, but he didn't say anything doesn't respond to
- 13:04them. He just begins to write on the
- 13:07ground. But when they persisted and
- 13:10asking him, he straightened up and said to them, He who is
- 13:15without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at
- 13:20her. Again he stooped down and wrote
- 13:25on the ground. Somewhat tend to believe that
- 13:30what he was writing was the the private sins of those who
- 13:35accused her. And maybe he was writing those
- 13:39in the ground associated with their names because he would
- 13:44know their names. He who is without sin.
- 13:49In other words, you maybe not have committed adultery, but in
- 13:56your heart you've lusted after this woman or or that woman who
- 14:02knows what he wrote. But read on.
- 14:05It says when they heard it, they they began to go out one by one,
- 14:11beginning with the older ones. And he was left alone.
- 14:14And the woman where she was in the center of the court, one by
- 14:22one, they all begin to walk away.
- 14:25Why were they convicted? Were they confronted do they see
- 14:33in the writings of Christ on the ground their name with their
- 14:37sin, but they began to walk away 1 by 1 and it says straighten
- 14:44up. Jesus said to her, woman, where
- 14:47are they didn't no one condemn you?
- 14:51She said no one Lord and Jesus said I do not commit condemn you
- 14:57either. Go from now on sin no more.
- 15:06She was a forgiven person. She had received the forgiveness
- 15:13and the to prove that she would go and no longer commit the sin
- 15:16of adultery. She would live a a pure and holy
- 15:20life. But you see, the the tradition
- 15:24of the of the rabbis was so thick and so strong, it was all
- 15:29centered around the externals. See, Christ was interested in
- 15:34the source of sin, not necessarily the showing of sin,
- 15:42because the source is what matters.
- 15:46And the whole new covenant promise was about giving you a
- 15:49new heart, a new spirit, so you could be able to keep my
- 15:54statutes. Just because you methodically
- 15:57keep the 10 commandments doesn't mean you're going to go to
- 16:00heaven. Anybody could do that.
- 16:03They could control the external acts talked about this last
- 16:07week. They can make sure they didn't
- 16:09kill anybody and they can make sure they didn't commit adultery
- 16:11with anybody. But they could not control the
- 16:14internal aspect. They could not control the anger
- 16:17in their hearts. They could not control the
- 16:20lustful attitudes in their hearts.
- 16:24They needed a clean heart. They needed a new heart, but
- 16:29that wasn't what they were interested in.
- 16:33And so when you look at the rabbinical tradition, he talks
- 16:36about adultery and several times throughout the Scripture it
- 16:40speaks about that. In fact, he was 13.
- 16:43Verse #4 says that the marriage bed is undefiled, but
- 16:48fornicators, the adulterers, God will judge and He will.
- 16:52In the Ephesians 5 and in Galatians 5 and the 1st
- 16:56Corinthians 6 and Revelation chapter 22, it speaks about
- 17:00adulterers not entering the Kingdom of heaven, but those are
- 17:04the ones who persist in their adulterous lifestyle.
- 17:10Adultery is is when a married man commits sexual sin with a
- 17:17married woman or vice versa, or one who was married commit
- 17:22sexual sin with someone other than their partner.
- 17:26But Christ broadens that when he says a woman and everyone.
- 17:34So he's going beyond the marriage bound to speak about
- 17:38any woman and everyone involved. So specifically, he's talking
- 17:44about adultery, but generally he's talking about purity and
- 17:48holiness and the, the, the kind of lifestyle that abstains from
- 17:53any kind of sexual immorality. That's the that's the emphasis.
- 17:57He wants to understand that, that you've been taught a
- 17:59rabbinical tradition about adultery, but it goes way beyond
- 18:03that to a pure and holy lifestyle.
- 18:08But they would, they would forget about the desire.
- 18:12They shouldn't listen to Job. Job chapter 31 Job was a
- 18:21contemporary of Abraham. Job lived before the 10
- 18:27Commandments. Job was a blameless and upright
- 18:32man. Job walked with God and listen
- 18:37to what Job says. Job 31 verse #9 If my heart has
- 18:42been enticed by a woman, or I have lurked at my neighbor's
- 18:48doorway, may my wife grind for another and let others kneel
- 18:53down over her, for that would be a lustful crying.
- 18:58Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges.
- 19:06So here is Job, living before the 10 Commandments, living
- 19:11before the law is ever given, knowing that the heart is the
- 19:15center of sinful behavior. Job knows this.
- 19:21Job knows that the inner man needs to be cleansed.
- 19:24Job knows that that lustful desire and passion for another
- 19:28woman is punishable by judgment. How does he know that?
- 19:34Simply because God is always concerned about the heart of a
- 19:39man. That's always His concern.
- 19:43So in Mark 7, Christ says that which proceeds out of the man,
- 19:47that is what defiles the man. For from within, out of the
- 19:52heart of a men, men proceed evil thoughts, fornications, thefts,
- 19:57murders and adulteries. Some of the Pharisees missed
- 20:04that or they didn't want to have anything to do with that.
- 20:07They wanted to to squelch what was happening in their hearts
- 20:10and minds and just focus on the external acts because that they
- 20:14can control that. And I think you control that
- 20:17they they earned great standing with God and great standing in
- 20:21the community with people. But the Lord was always
- 20:24concerned about the heart. So you move from the rabbinical
- 20:28tradition to the biblical teaching.
- 20:31And Christ says these words very simply, He says, But I say to
- 20:36you that everyone who looks at a woman, anyone matter who you
- 20:41are, at any woman at all, with lust for her, has already
- 20:48committed adultery with her in his heart.
- 20:55The word for looks is a not not a casual glance.
- 20:58It's not an inadvertent glance. It's a it's a longing for, it's
- 21:04an intense glare. It's a continual stare.
- 21:10It's not an involuntary glance. It is a purposeful fixation, a
- 21:16repeated gazing. He looks at a woman and lusts
- 21:23for her. That's the purpose of his
- 21:24looking, to fulfill the desires of his his lustful heart.
- 21:31His lustful heart causes him to to look upon her.
- 21:37Note that the looking at the woman lustfully does not cause
- 21:41him to commit adultery in the thoughts.
- 21:45He already has committed adultery in his heart.
- 21:50The lustful looking doesn't cause the sin in the heart, but
- 21:57the sin in the heart causes the lustful looking.
- 22:03The lustful looking is but an expression of a heart that has
- 22:07already immoral and adulterous. He says it's in the heart.
- 22:14It's the heart that's that's that's moving you this way.
- 22:17This sounds. James says that we read this
- 22:19last week. I think this is so important,
- 22:21James is it this way each one verse 14 is tempted.
- 22:27Now temptation's not the sin. Temptation's not sin.
- 22:30Christ was tempted yet without sin, right?
- 22:34Temptation is not sin because you can not succumb to
- 22:39temptation. But he says this.
- 22:41But each one is tempted when he is carried away, not if he is
- 22:50carried away, but when he is carried away and enticed by his
- 22:57own lusts. The word entices.
- 23:00A is a word that means to to catch with bait.
- 23:03It's a fishing term where you want to go fishing and so you,
- 23:06you put the best bait on, on the hook possible to draw out all
- 23:11those fish to come after you. Very deceiving, right?
- 23:17And each man, each man, when he's carried away and enticed by
- 23:22his own lusts, his own desires, OK, he's deceived by the bait
- 23:30that is there. Then one then, when lust has
- 23:34conceded, gives birth to sin. And when sin is accomplished, it
- 23:38gives or brings forth death, death, a death like existent.
- 23:44The way to sin is death. And James makes it very clear.
- 23:48So, So how can we best illustrate this for you?
- 23:50How can we help you understand how this happens?
- 23:54I'm going to give you an illustration that I've given to
- 23:56you before, but I want to give it to you again because you need
- 23:59to understand this downward spiral that takes place in
- 24:03someone's life, in someone's heart.
- 24:06How does all this take place? How does no, nobody just wakes
- 24:10up on on Monday and says I'm having an affair today.
- 24:14I'm sleeping with my neighbor's wife today.
- 24:16No one just wakes up and does that.
- 24:19What? What is it that moves people to
- 24:23that? What moves people to sexual sin?
- 24:26What moves a man or woman to have an adulterous affair?
- 24:30What is it that moves them inwardly that that would cause
- 24:33them to go that direction? Well, turn back with me, if you
- 24:37would, to a very familiar story. You know it well to Second
- 24:41Samuel, Chapter 11, the story of David and Bathsheba.
- 24:48David is 50 years old. David has been king for 20
- 24:56years. The nation's going great.
- 25:02Everything is well. Israel is a powerhouse.
- 25:09David is a warrior and he is able to organize the nation,
- 25:15lead the nation, and the nation is at the best place it's ever
- 25:20been. By the time you come to Second
- 25:23Samuel Chapter 11. And I want you to notice
- 25:28something that David the king survived every assault by Saul.
- 25:42David survived every assault by Saul, but David succumbed to the
- 25:53attacks on his soul. He was able to survive every
- 26:01assault by salt, but he succumbed to the attack on his
- 26:13soul. How does this great king of
- 26:18Israel, this man after God's own heart, end up sleeping with
- 26:29Bathsheba? At this point he has seven
- 26:34wives. He has a myriad of concubines.
- 26:41We know of seven because the Bible tells us that.
- 26:43But Second Samuel 5 verse #13 tells us that he had other wives
- 26:49and more concubines while in Jerusalem.
- 26:54So he probably had more than just seven wives.
- 26:58But then the Bible gives us 7UP to this point.
- 27:01Bathsheba then becomes #8 she becomes the last in the list of
- 27:06those that are named. OK, so, so how does he get here?
- 27:14What happens? Well, Proverbs 1315 says that
- 27:20the way of the transgressor is hard.
- 27:27You need to remember that the way of the transgressor is hard.
- 27:33It's difficult, it's painful. The Bible says in Hebrews 11/25
- 27:41that sin is pleasurable, but only for a season.
- 27:46Not forever, only for a while, but not very long, only for a
- 27:54season. In Second Samuel 11, we have a
- 28:00king who gets enveloped in this downward spiral that seems to
- 28:09race faster and faster and faster.
- 28:13And the question comes, how does this happen?
- 28:15So I'm going to give you 15 words that will show you the
- 28:26downward spiral of his life. First word is carelessness.
- 28:35Carelessness. For David, this is where it
- 28:43begins. His moral failure didn't just
- 28:49happen on the balcony of his palace by looking at Bathsheba.
- 28:59No, he had already violated God's standards by accumulating
- 29:06many wives. Let me read to you the standard.
- 29:11Deuteronomy chapter 17 says this verse 14.
- 29:19When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, and
- 29:21you possess it and live in it, and you say, I will set a king
- 29:25over me, like all the nations around me, you shall surely set
- 29:30a king over you. Whom the Lord your God chooses
- 29:34one from among your countrymen, you shall set as king over
- 29:38yourselves. You may not put a foreigner over
- 29:41yourselves who is not your countrymen.
- 29:44Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he
- 29:52cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses.
- 29:58Since the Lord has said to you, you shall never return again
- 30:02that way. Verse 17 of Deuteronomy 17 He
- 30:08shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will
- 30:19turn away, nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for
- 30:26himself. God says when I choose the king
- 30:30for you, remember they chose Saul, the Lord.
- 30:34God chose David. When I choose the king for you,
- 30:39he should not multiply horses. He should not encourage you to
- 30:42return to Egypt to multiply horses, and he shall not
- 30:46multiply wise. If he does, they will turn his
- 30:53heart away from me. David was very careless with
- 30:59that. You see, when you become
- 31:02careless in any aspect of God's Word, you have begun a process
- 31:10that's very dangerous in your life.
- 31:16It says this in verse 18 of Deuteronomy 17.
- 31:19Now should come about when he sits on the throne of his
- 31:21Kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a
- 31:24scroll in the presence of the Levitical priest.
- 31:27It shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of
- 31:30his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by
- 31:34carefully observing all the words of this law and these
- 31:37statutes. That his heart may not, cannot
- 31:39be lifted up above his countrymen, and that he may not
- 31:42turn aside from the commandment to the right or to the left,
- 31:47said he, and his sons may continue long in his Kingdom in
- 31:51the midst of Israel. His job as king is to write in
- 31:59the presence of the Levitical priesthood, the law of God, so
- 32:06that he will observe that law all the days of his life.
- 32:10In other words, what the word of God says, you must obey, you
- 32:14must keep it. You're the king, you set the
- 32:15example, you're the one who is the prime leader of your of your
- 32:19Kingdom. If you can't set the example,
- 32:21whose, what example will they have to follow?
- 32:24This is your job as a king. The question is, was David doing
- 32:30that? Was he writing the law in front
- 32:34of the Levitical priests? Well, evidently he wasn't
- 32:38because he was multiplying for himself wives.
- 32:42So he became very careless in the commands of God.
- 32:47When you become careless with any of God's command, it will
- 32:53allow you to become careless in other commands that God gives.
- 32:59It's a downward spiral and this is where it begins with David.
- 33:07Discipline is so important in the Christian life.
- 33:13Discipline will always lead to delight.
- 33:18A lack of discipline will always lead to disaster, IE Second
- 33:24Samuel 11. David, so important, so
- 33:32carelessness, will always lead to #2 idleness.
- 33:37Listen to what the text says. Then it happened in the spring,
- 33:43at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and
- 33:48his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the
- 33:53sons of Ammon and besieged the Rabah.
- 33:58But again, another but ology in Scripture.
- 34:03But David stayed at Jerusalem. Idleness.
- 34:11David is a warrior. That's what he's known for.
- 34:17But David didn't go to war. He decided to stay home and
- 34:22remain idle, not fulfilling his duty nor his responsibility.
- 34:30Duty and it's fulfillment will protect you from delinquency,
- 34:39but if you're not responsible and you become idle, then the
- 34:45problem is you lack discipline. And discipline always leads to
- 34:50disaster or lack thereof. So here he is.
- 34:54When kings go out to war, where is the king?
- 34:59He's in Jerusalem, he should be going to war, leading his men to
- 35:04war, but he's not. You see, when you're careless in
- 35:11anyone aspect of God's law, it'll affect everything else you
- 35:16do. And the sad thing about it is,
- 35:19is that we don't even recognize it.
- 35:22So carelessness led to idleness, and idleness led to laziness.
- 35:29Look what it says now. When evening came, David arose
- 35:35from his bed. Stop right there.
- 35:39What's David doing in bed in the evening time?
- 35:46Why is he not out of bed? Why is he napping in the late
- 35:51part of the day? Unless, of course, you're lazy,
- 35:58and David was lazy. When you're idle and you have
- 36:01nothing to do, what do you do? You get really sleepy, Lay down
- 36:05in your bed, take a nap, relax, put your feet up.
- 36:14And carelessness led to idleness, and idleness led to
- 36:21laziness. He's in bed, but he awakes.
- 36:29He gets up, says and walked around on the roof of the King's
- 36:37house. Laziness always leads to
- 36:45mindlessness. What's he doing walking around
- 36:50the King's house? What's he thinking about?
- 36:54What's he's doing? He, he hasn't fulfilled his
- 36:58responsibility. He's not doing his normal duties
- 37:01as king. No, he stayed back and was very
- 37:03idle. That idoless led to laziness.
- 37:06That laziness caused him just to get up and walk around the
- 37:09house. He couldn't turn on Netflix.
- 37:11He couldn't turn on Prime Video. He, he couldn't peruse the
- 37:14Internet to think of something to buy off of Amazon.
- 37:17He couldn't do. He just walked around the house.
- 37:20He could have began to or began to write the law of God, as
- 37:24Deuteronomy 17 said. He could have sat down and began
- 37:30to read the law of God to keep his mind active.
- 37:37But no, he became mindless because he was lazy, because he
- 37:46was idle. This is the the downward spiral
- 37:51of someone who's about to live a life of complete and total
- 37:54disaster. You know the Bible says need to
- 38:02be watchful and prayerful, right?
- 38:05Christ says in the garden to his men, watch and pray lest you
- 38:10enter into temptation. Did they watch and pray?
- 38:16Nope. What do they do?
- 38:17You got lazy and went to sleep. They weren't watchful.
- 38:26They weren't prayerful. Colossians 42, Paul says be
- 38:29devoted to prayer while always having this attitude of
- 38:33alertness, watchfulness, very important.
- 38:38David could have got up from his bed and dropped to his knees and
- 38:44began to pray, be alert, but he wasn't.
- 38:53And so he goes, some carelessness, which was a habit
- 38:58pattern of his life because he collected many, many wives over
- 39:03a long period of time. That carelessness led to
- 39:07idleness, and idleness led to laziness, and laziness led to
- 39:12mindlessness, and mindlessness led to feeble mindedness.
- 39:22In other words, he impaired his intellect.
- 39:28And it says Now when the evening came, David arose from his bed
- 39:33and walked around on the roof of the King's house, and from the
- 39:37roof he saw a woman bathing. Feeble mindedness.
- 39:48His intellect was not sharp because he had been asleep.
- 39:53His intellect was not sharp because he was not watchful and
- 39:58prayerful, right. We saw a woman.
- 40:01And if you've been to Israel with me and you've been in the
- 40:03King's, the King's palace, you know how very easily this could
- 40:06happen because at the top of Mount Zion is the King's palace.
- 40:10And he would oversee the the city of Jerusalem.
- 40:13And he would be able to look down and see the different
- 40:15rooftops of all the different homes.
- 40:17And a lot of commentators want to blame Bathsheba here.
- 40:20I'm not. Unless quite sure you can do
- 40:22that. I mean, they do, but I'm not so
- 40:25sure you can. Why?
- 40:27Because everybody's gone. They're all gone to war.
- 40:34No one's home except the women. So what difference does it make
- 40:39for? I bathe, right?
- 40:41It's like you go into your your bathroom and turn in your shower
- 40:44and shut the door. It wasn't like that.
- 40:46See, so I'm, I'm not too quick to blame Bathsheba here, but I'm
- 40:52quick to blame David for his feeble mindedness.
- 40:56He just wasn't intellectually astute at all.
- 41:01Because, you see, each man is, is is tempted when he is drawn
- 41:06away and enticed by his own lusts, See, And because he
- 41:12wasn't watchful, nor was he prayerful, then he could not
- 41:18overcome the longing and the temptation in his heart.
- 41:23This was the time to flee youthful lusts.
- 41:28Second Timothy 222 But he didn't.
- 41:33Why? Because you see, if you're
- 41:34careless in one avenue of Scripture, you'll be careless in
- 41:39other avenues of Scripture, correct?
- 41:42And so because he wasn't astute to write the law of God and to
- 41:46and to meditate on the law of God and to follow the law of God
- 41:49every single day as was prescribed for the king, he
- 41:53wasn't scripturally and biblically astute.
- 41:58And so because he was careless in multiplying wives, then he
- 42:04become careless with the situation with Bathsheba.
- 42:10See, things are going for well for David.
- 42:14Things are going great in the Kingdom.
- 42:17People are happy, the nation's successful, the nation's
- 42:22growing, everything's good. Even though David has been very
- 42:28careless in obeying the laws of God, God blesses more so in
- 42:35spite of us than because of us, because God is graceful.
- 42:42But David dishonored his God by not being obedient to the word
- 42:50of God. That feeble mindedness led to
- 42:57his lustfulness. It says he saw a woman bathing
- 43:02and the woman was very beautiful in appearance.
- 43:12He had to look long and hard to determine a beauty.
- 43:17That lustfulness came because of his feeble mindedness, which
- 43:21became because of his mindlessness, which developed
- 43:24because of his laziness, which came from his idleness, which
- 43:29came from his carelessness. It was a downward spiral of sin
- 43:37that would ensnare him, entrap him, and at any moment he could
- 43:43have been watchful into prayer. At any moment he could have fled
- 43:48youthful lusts. At any moment he could flee
- 43:52immorality. He could be a modern day Joseph
- 43:59at any moment. But he wasn't.
- 44:06The Bible says in Psalm 11937 Turn away my eyes from looking
- 44:10at vanity. The Bible says in Hebrews 12/2
- 44:17look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.
- 44:20Isaiah 13, Excuse me? Isaiah 3315 says He who walks
- 44:26righteously shuts his eyes from seeing evil.
- 44:36He who walks righteously shuts his eyes from seeing evil.
- 44:43David wasn't walking righteously.
- 44:46Why? Because he was careless when it
- 44:50came to obedience to the Word of God.
- 44:54And therefore when it came to fulfill his responsibility as
- 44:57king, he stayed home, became idle.
- 45:02The idleness led to his laziness.
- 45:05That laziness led to his mindlessness, which led to his
- 45:10feeble mindedness, which led to his lustfulness, which led to
- 45:16his foolishness. Look what the text says.
- 45:23So David sent and inquired about the woman.
- 45:29That's just plain foolishness. Dude, you're married.
- 45:34You married 7 times over, you got concubines.
- 45:39What more could you possibly want?
- 45:40But to him, to him who wants more than enough is never
- 45:49enough. And here is David since, since,
- 45:55since and inquires about her. And one said, is this not
- 46:04Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah?
- 46:10Well, that should that should be obvious to say, oh, OK, great,
- 46:19we're done. But you see when, when you're
- 46:23when you're careless with the law of God, when you're careless
- 46:25with the word of God and you say, you know what, I'm just not
- 46:28going to do that. I'm not going to spend my time
- 46:31doing this or do it. Next thing you know, it's so
- 46:34easy to say, you know what, I'm not going to do that either.
- 46:37You know what? And that command, you know what,
- 46:39I'm not doing that one either. And you know what, I've gotten
- 46:41away with it. The kingdom's flourishing.
- 46:44This is great. It's OK.
- 46:48And we think that the consequences will will not
- 46:51happen to us because our Lord is long-suffering and patient.
- 46:58And Jeremiah 414 says how long will your vain thoughts remain
- 47:05within you? Empty thoughts.
- 47:10Here is David, he inquired about the woman they said she's
- 47:16married the wife of Uriah. Foolishness on David's part to
- 47:23think that it should not end. And so the text says, David sent
- 47:33messengers and took her. Wow, wow, covetousness.
- 47:46David wanted another man's wife. Exodus 20 tells us Thou shalt
- 47:55not covet thy neighbors wife. But he did.
- 48:03To whom little is not enough, nothing is really enough.
- 48:08And therefore disobeying this command, thou shalt not commit
- 48:13adultery. Well, he was careless with the
- 48:18other commands. What's wrong with being careless
- 48:21with this command as well? He's gotten away with not doing
- 48:26what was prescribed for the king.
- 48:28Why would I not get away with this?
- 48:30I mean, after all, everybody's gone.
- 48:34As foolishness leads to covetousness, as covetous leads
- 48:37to stubbornness. It says these words.
- 48:46David sent messengers and took her.
- 48:51Say he took her anyway, in spite of her marriage, in spite of the
- 48:587th Commandment, in spite of anything else.
- 49:01He took her anyway. That's just plain stubbornness.
- 49:08And that stubbornness led to fearlessness.
- 49:16Look what it says. And when she came to him, he lay
- 49:26with her shamelessness, which led to lawlessness.
- 49:33She came to him no shame, even though his messengers knew no
- 49:38shame. And that shamelessness led to
- 49:41lawlessness with sin. All sin is lawlessness.
- 49:49They took her and she came into him, and he lay with her.
- 49:56Well, it says he didn't fear the law of God, and so he just did
- 50:05what he wanted, in spite of what God's Word had said.
- 50:11But remember, when you are careless with one part or any
- 50:17part of God's law, this is the downward spiral that begins to
- 50:23take place in a person's life. You rationalize disobedience.
- 50:29You rationalize doing what you want to do.
- 50:32Your stubbornness, your covetousness, your, your, your
- 50:35lustfulness. You can rationalize it all the
- 50:37way, but God is watching and God knows.
- 50:45So that stubbornness that led to fearlessness led to lawlessness,
- 50:48led to shamelessness, because it says very simply this.
- 50:54And when she had purified herself from her uncleanness,
- 51:00she returned to her home. No shame, no embarrassment, no
- 51:09sadness. Get up, clean yourself off.
- 51:15Go home, David. Clean himself off.
- 51:19Remain king. No shame.
- 51:23Why? Because he was stubborn.
- 51:26Why? Because he was foolish.
- 51:29Why? Because he was covetous.
- 51:31Why? Why?
- 51:34Because the downward spile of one man who decides, you know
- 51:37what? I'm not going to do that part of
- 51:39the law. I'm going to multiply for myself
- 51:43many wives, even though I'm not supposed to do that.
- 51:48And it'll be OK because after all, it is legal.
- 51:53Was it moral? But it was legal.
- 51:57So he rationalized his morality because he subjected it to
- 52:03legalities and thought it was OK.
- 52:08Well, that shamelessness led to deceitfulness, thinking nothing
- 52:13would happen, Everything is going to be OK, one night stand,
- 52:18no big deal, deceitfulness. And that deceitfulness led to
- 52:24the relentless pattern of sinfulness through the whole
- 52:31episode with Uriah, his being murdered, David lying.
- 52:39David broke every commandment which led to his brokenness.
- 52:46David broke every commandment, all ten of them in these few
- 52:54verses in Second Samuel Chapter 11.
- 52:58Because in his heart he hated Uriah or he wouldn't have slept
- 53:02with his wife. But he murdered him, had him
- 53:07killed, He lied, he stole, he coveted, he was idolatrous
- 53:16because all idolatry is covetousness.
- 53:20He didn't love the Lord with all of his heart, soul, mind and
- 53:22strength. Listen, he even broke the 4th
- 53:27commandment, which is remember the Sabbath day and keep it
- 53:31holy. The Sabbath day is about
- 53:36holiness and purity and sanctity.
- 53:39The reason there's a Sabbath day is so that you will be holy.
- 53:44David was unholy. He broke all 10 commandments.
- 53:51And so in Psalm 32 says these words verse #1 how blessed is he
- 53:59whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered?
- 54:02How blessed is the man whom the Lord does not impute iniquity,
- 54:05and in whose spirit there is no deceit?
- 54:09When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my
- 54:15groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was
- 54:18heavy upon me. My vitality was drained away as
- 54:22with the fever heat of summer. This was his nine months of of
- 54:32Bathsheba's pregnancy before he really truly repented of his
- 54:36sin. Verse 5I acknowledge my sin to
- 54:39you in my iniquity. I did not hide.
- 54:41I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord and
- 54:44you forgave the guilt of my sin. Took David a long time to get
- 54:51there, but that's why he's a man for God's own heart, because he
- 54:56was a repentant man. I would like to say to you that
- 55:01that things were really good for for David, but the sword never
- 55:05left his home. His family was in shambles.
- 55:08It was a mess. He was a great king.
- 55:11He was a horrible father and a horrible husband, but he was a
- 55:17great king. And so we learned from this
- 55:22story that it's the heart of a man that matters, right?
- 55:28It's all that matters. And once our heart says, you
- 55:32know what, I'm not going to do what God says.
- 55:37Even though it's not that big a deal, it is a big deal because
- 55:43it begins to balloon in other areas of my life.
- 55:48That's why it's so important for you to understand the word of
- 55:50the Lord and hold on to it and cling to it.
- 55:54How should a young man keep his way pure by taking heed to the
- 55:59Word of God? David did not do that by word.
- 56:04I've hid my heart that I might not sin against thee.
- 56:07David didn't do that either, because he was supposed to read
- 56:12the Word, write the Word, and observe the law of God all the
- 56:18days of his kingship. And he didn't.
- 56:21It cost him. But he would soon write the
- 56:26Psalms and begin to tell us about his confession and the
- 56:30importance of the Word of God in his life, having come to realize
- 56:35that when you're careless with it, it will cost you greatly.
- 56:40The attitude behind adultery is everything.
- 56:43It's all in the heart. We can say we don't do this and
- 56:47we don't do that, but we do do this and we do do that.
- 56:50God doesn't care. God wants a clean heart, a pure
- 56:54heart, a heart after Him. And the hope is, and it's true
- 57:02that Christ always provides a way of cleansing.
- 57:06You're never so filthy that you cannot be cleansed by the blood
- 57:10of the Lamb. Christ cleanses man from a sin,
- 57:14and David's a perfect example of that.
- 57:17God forgave him the guilt of a sin, not just a sin, but all
- 57:20that was on the inside that he felt guilty about.
- 57:24And that's the good news about this lesson.
- 57:27It's a very valuable lesson for us.
- 57:30We raise our children, try to provide for them.
- 57:33A biblical example of purity and holiness.
- 57:37So important. And next week we'll we'll talk
- 57:40to you about our personal transformation.
- 57:45What needs to happen in my life so I don't begin this downward
- 57:49spiral that causes me to lose control and engage in sinful
- 57:55behavior? What does God's word say about
- 57:58that? We'll pick that up next week.
- 58:02Let me pray with you, Father. Thank you, Lord, for tonight and
- 58:05a chance to be with your people. Thank you, Father, for a chance
- 58:09to be in Your word. Thank you for the reminder that
- 58:13Your Word is true. And I pray that all of us would
- 58:17realize the the necessary elements of being in the Word
- 58:22everyday, memorizing, obeying, teaching, reading the Word of
- 58:30God. It's we.
- 58:33We've been made clean through the word which you've spoken to
- 58:36us. John 15.
- 58:39Lord, help us to be cleansed on the inside.
- 58:43Help our hearts be right for you.
- 58:46You are a forgiving God. You are a God that cleanses us
- 58:49from all of our sin. May we leave here today not
- 58:53thinking that we cannot be forgiven.
- 58:56We can be. All we have to do is come to you
- 59:01and you forgive because that's who you are and we thank you in
- 59:06Jesus name, Amen.
