- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: Doing all right, man.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Excited to kick off episode number two, the episode almost so much fun.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: So ready to get to it?
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Well, I have a quick rant to uh start this podcast off.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Uh my Spurs are going to get eliminated from the 2020 NBA playoffs.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: I'm horribly upset.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: I'm distraught.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: I can't even stand it.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: There's so many things I can blame.
- 1:09SPEAKER_03: I hate the entire city of Philadelphia.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Uh, Cowboys fans get in here because we all hate Philly today.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Um, I could talk about Giannis headbutting Mo Wagner and getting suspended for the Memphis game, a game that Memphis needed to lose.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: I could talk about Damian Lillard getting all the calls in the Mavericks game.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Mavs fans get in here.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: I could also talk about nobody beating the Phoenix Suns.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: The Phoenix Suns are not this good.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: The Phoenix Suns are not 8-0 level good, and they are gonna take our spot.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: They're probably gonna take our spot, and they may not even get into the playoffs.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: So back to Philadelphia.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Some dude named Shake Milton.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: You ever heard of Shake Milton?
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: He went to SMU, another school we hate.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: And this dude decided to be Michael Jordan all of a sudden and beat the Spurs with three seconds left, hit the three-pointer.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Shake Milton, damn it.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, decided to get hurt right before the Portland and Phoenix games.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: I can't like this is just luck.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: This is just bad luck.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: How how do those how do both of their star players get hurt for both the Portland game and the Phoenix game?
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: I'm so upset.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: The Spurs are making the 2021 playoffs.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: Keldon Johnson is a future Hall of Famer.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: End of rant.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: We are now talking about Texas Tech.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: What a way to kick in the door.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: I had to do it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: I'm horribly upset.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: I can't believe that that happened.
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: But on the bright side, we're playing football in 2020.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: The Big 12 is playing football in 2020.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: As of right now, you should say that as a disclaimer.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: The Big 12 has decided to move forward with the season after both the cancellations of the Big Ten and the Pac-12.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: Tristan, what do you uh what do you have to say about that, man?
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: I would be lying if I wasn't excited that uh college football is going to be coming back here in 2020.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: I think we were all very nervous that it wasn't going to.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: And talk about a long, like six hours.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Whenever the Big Ten announced that they're going to cancel their season, uh, everyone was, you know, sweating.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: Who's going to be next?
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: I think everybody expected the pack to follow them.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but I was surprised, I was surprised the pack wasn't first.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: I thought they were gonna be, I thought they were gonna be like a week ahead of everybody.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: I was I was thinking the exact same thing.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: And then everyone was starting to say that, you know, then the ACC and the SEC came in and said that we're gonna push forward, and all eyes were on the Big 12 because it was a very hyper focused on who's gonna be the tilt.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: What you know, what's gonna be the majority move?
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Is it gonna be we are playing or we aren't playing out of the power of five?
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: And of course, I would be lying if I said I'm not happy that we may we tilted the scale into we are playing.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean we're all happy that we're playing football, but I think it was Tuesday that all that nonsense went down.
- 4:10SPEAKER_03: And Twitter was just a mess through the whole day.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, you were keeping up with it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: I was trying to keep up with it a little bit, but it started, I believe, with the Mac canceling their season, and then it went to like Mountain West, and I got a little scared.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: I was like, okay, hold on, they got Boise State and they have good teams over there.
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: And then you started hearing rumblings about the Big Ten, and you're like, oh my god, no way Ohio State and Michigan are not gonna play football.
- 4:39SPEAKER_03: You're just like, there's no way they're gonna let that happen.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: They were the first one of the Power Five to say, no way, we're not we're not playing.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: And I don't know, did you see the Big Ten's tweet?
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: The the video that they put out there?
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Yes, I I I didn't watch the video, but I saw it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: It was I know what you're talking about.
- 4:56SPEAKER_03: It was heartbreaking, dude.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: It like just rub some more salt in the wounds.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Seriously.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: They were they show all these great moments from past Big Ten.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: It's basically just getting everybody hyped up just to be brought back down.
- 5:10SPEAKER_03: It was horrible.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Why would you do that?
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Ow.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Dude, I really feel wounds bad.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I really do feel sorry for uh all the players and fans and coaches that were ready for the season to come.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: I think we're all looking for some relief during these very interesting times, to say the least.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: And football, especially college football, is one of those things that brings communities together like no other.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: So I think we're all looking for that unity, that happiness, uh, and that that community atmosphere again.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: So I really do feel for the Big Ten and the Pac-12 people that wanted this to happen.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: You, I mean, we could talk about the fan impact.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: Everybody's been talking about the fan impact, but they talk about the Justin Fields and they talk about the Trevor Lawrences, and they talk about the big-time college athletes going into the season, but they don't talk about the guys who are looking to make that next leap.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: The guys who are, you know, possibly looking to get some NFL recognition, and that was gonna come from this season.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Those guys are not gonna get that in the Big Ten.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: They're not the the guys that are coming in and uh from you know schools like Illinois, schools like Indiana, schools like Minnesota, these guys that are not well known in the national media yet, and we're gonna take that next leap, and they don't get to play football and they don't get to show their stuff.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: And these players are working their butts off, man.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: They're this is what they're training for.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Since some of them have been doing this to get to this point their whole life, yeah, you know, yeah.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Uh so that that I that 100% on the the the player impact, man.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: That that that stings.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: And uh I I'm sure the NCAA will cut them some slack.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: You know, of course, you know, this this year will be a wash, so I'm sure they can get uh all four years of their of their playtime.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: Um and yeah, you really hit the nail on the head.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: Well, and the economic impact for local businesses in those college towns, they're gonna really hurt.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: That's already happened, we can see with the coronavirus effect, uh, just in general.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: But football season is where some of these businesses make their money for the year, man.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: You go, you talk about the Ann Arbor, Michigans, the University Parks, the Champaign, Illinois, the you know, the Bloomingtons, those type of cities are gonna really struggle.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: The restaurants, the bars, everything over there because they're not getting away fans coming in for that Ohio State game or for that Michigan game.
- 7:30SPEAKER_03: And so those local businesses, you feel for those owners and you feel for those employees over there that are you might lose their jobs from from this impact.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a good point to uh to look at because you know, we you you would think that obviously Lubbock would get hit hard by that economically, but Lubbock's at least at the size and its own sort of economic bubble to withstand it, you know, because it's it's a city of a quarter of a million people.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Uh whenever you talk about Pullman, Washington, where it's a city of maybe 30,000 people.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean you you look at like you don't feel as bad for like the Columbus's and the Madisons, but you really feel for the Ann Arbors and the Bloomingtons and University Parks, the the college towns are gonna get impacted by this the most.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: You know, Austin's gonna be okay if he doesn't play football.
- 8:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Lubbock's gonna be okay, but you know, some of these smaller towns, it's just it's just horrible for the city.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: Businesses can't catch a break right now.
- 8:27SPEAKER_03: No, they can't, and uh it is frustrating because you see the NFL deciding to play this season, the NBA has come back, the MLB has come back, the NHL has come back, but football can't seem to get their stuff together, college football at least.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: And there's there's different factors that go into that.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: Uh college football is a much more widespread amount of teams.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, you're dealing with hundreds upon hundreds of programs and thousands of student athletes, and then the student athlete argument, yeah, and staff members and the student athlete argument is is a completely different thing, talking amateurs versus professionals.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then coming off the heels of uh talking about how disappointed the players are gonna be, this was right off the them talking about the the player unions.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Like that was big for a minute there, and then this kind of crushes it right now.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I just don't see how how an amateur, how a bunch of amateur athletes are gonna be able to devise a union.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: And uh I really thought the player movement, the uh uh hashtag we want to play, seeing Trevor Lawrence and seeing Justin Fields, the guys that are the stars of college football in 2020, are out here saying we want to play.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: Trevor Lawrence had a billion tweets about how he feels safer with the team playing football uh than he would just going back to school.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: I the fact of the matter is these pe these players are gonna go back to school anyway.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: They're going back on campus being surrounded by all these other students, this the same don't talk about player safety when it's the exact same thing.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're going to back to their campuses of several thousand students.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: You know, who's to say that's safer than if they played football?
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: You sound like Nick Saban.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: He was he was saying that he feels like the players are safer with with him at the team, you know, on campus than they are at home, you know, uh running around and stuff, too.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: So uh that's that's a great point.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: And it's uh COVID just is really uh with the this this is kind of turning into a COVID podcast.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, but we have to have these conversations because it is so disappointing for those Big Ten fans and those Pac-12 fans, uh, all seven Pac-12 fans out there.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: You you feel for them, but no, seriously, for uh the Pac-12 too, it it's it's devastating for some of those teams and a lot of money is gonna be lost.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: But uh, and I wanted to bring up the final point of of this cancellation, you know, with the Big Ten and Pac-12.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, people working in sports uh is another thing that doesn't get talked about enough.
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: I've personally seen it uh in in my line of business.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Uh I've seen a lot of uh my former coworkers get laid off uh from having sports being canceled.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Uh the companies around marketing and advertising for these things are uh getting hit very hard from it.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Uh ticket sales, anything uh that these 20-something and and 30-something year old people straight out of college, uh they're getting hit super hard about with not having sports and not having fans in the stands.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: So uh I did want to bring that up.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, I had to get to talk about that enough, man.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Um sorry to cut you off.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: I just wanted to really double down on that because it's it whenever people say that you know sports aren't a necessity, and while it's entertainment, like you were just saying, thousands upon thousands of people depend on that to put food on the table.
- 12:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, just because it's it's entertainment doesn't mean it's not an important industry.
- 12:08SPEAKER_03: Uh I had a guy reach out to me on LinkedIn actually, uh probably about a month ago, and he's a tech grad, and he was like, hey man, saw your resume, saw some of the the companies you've been working for, and uh, you know, as a I just graduated, I'm trying to break into sports.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I I'm like, dude, I can't, you know, I had a 30-minute conversation with him and it went well, but I it I had to emphasize that it's just it's just not gonna happen right now for you, dude.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, you're gonna have to wait just like I'm gonna have to wait just like a lot of a lot of my friends are gonna have to wait.
- 12:42SPEAKER_03: I I couldn't, I told them about five different times.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: I feel so bad for uh the graduates of 2020, the graduates of uh, you know, summer of 2020 and May of 2020.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: I just feel for those those people because the job market is absolutely destroyed.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, kind of uh a downer topic, but uh we have to discuss these these sort of things, especially uh with the recent news.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: So uh, but why don't we move on to something a little more happy?
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: Uh Texas Tech is playing football.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Uh the new schedule was released um here, and Houston Baptist, uh, we thought, okay, the Southland are they the Southland Conference?
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Is that what?
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the the Southland Conference decided they were canceling their season, and we're like, okay, I guess we're just gonna have to get somebody else now.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, but it looks like they're gonna let the teams that already scheduled non-conference opponents play those non-conference games, uh, which is good for tech.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: That doesn't that means you know, we're we're gonna play Houston Baptist.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: September 12th.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh though you're right.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: We're a little, I mean, not a big scare, but uh obviously the Houston Baptists is depending on the tech game too, bringing some income into the final uh into the athletic department.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Well, and it would just be a pain in the ass, you know, trying to find another team at this point in the season when all these conferences have already decided to cancel, it's just a pain in the butt.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad we get to uh continue playing and don't have to find somebody else.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: I'm just a little jealous of like Kansas State uh and Iowa State who have landed uh FBS opponents.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: Um but but hey, we're we we got an opponent to play, so that's it's there's no sense of complaining about it.
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 14:27SPEAKER_03: You know, FCS and and we we said this last last time on the pod, but uh it's gonna be an easy game, so it's gonna mean we can get our feet on the ground and get raring to go, get some plays off in actual game time against real opponents uh and not just practice.
- 14:45SPEAKER_03: So uh that'll be nice.
- 14:47SPEAKER_03: Uh bring on the huskies.
- 14:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, bring on the huskies.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Hopefully we beat them down.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, the Houston Baptist is the Huskies?
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I want them to say the same thing.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Yes, they are.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: Why would any school in Houston be the Huskies?
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: The hottest, most humid place on earth is the Houston.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: It's they're the Houston Baptist Fatin Huskies.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: That is a big yikes on that name.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: That's three yikes from me.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: But um, I did want to uh hit a few points on on the new schedule.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: Um, we're starting off against UT.
- 15:21SPEAKER_03: It's our first conference game.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: That is the last time bizarre.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: The last time we started off against UT was 2010 in college.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: That was the 10 years ago, was the last time that we started conference play with the Longhorns.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I actually like the idea of getting them out of the way early.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: I don't know about you.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: I'm so with you.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: Uh I a lot of people are kind of like, oh, well, there's the first L of the season, and it's going to be to uh UT, of course.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, I kind of see this as this is a time to catch them while they're sleeping, you know, while they're trying to figure things out, you know, because no team is performing at its best at the very beginning of the season.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: And you don't have all your non-conference games.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: You have one game before that to get prepared.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: So I'm hoping if we can catch them off guard at home, we can we can get a sneaky dub.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we're they're gonna be the favorite team, but I'm with you.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm I'm excited to get to get them out of the way first.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's and it's home in Lubbock, uh starting off uh conference play at home, which is nice.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, look at they officially said 25% capacity, so that's about what 15, 15, what was it?
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: 15,000 people.
- 16:31SPEAKER_03: 15,000 people.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: So that's I mean, that's still something.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: That's still something.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you'll still hear them.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're gonna have fans.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: They're gonna they're gonna probably socially distant.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: I don't know how uh how they're gonna stick to that when people start getting rowdy and getting inside the stadium.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: I'm guessing it's gonna be family units or you know, groups that uh attend the game together are gonna be encouraged to you know to isolate themselves across the bleachers.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: I'm assuming that's how it's gonna go.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:59SPEAKER_02: You know, every slot will be filled because it's UT.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: It's the it's always the game we circle on the side.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: They're gonna get filled for every game, every all-game this year, because only 15,000 fans, even that shows up for the worst game of the year.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I just mean that if there's gonna be uh a game where all the energy is gonna be in Lubbock, it's definitely gonna be that one.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: We can know for sure.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: For sure, for sure.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Um, we have a stretch where we are OU at TCU, Baylor, and then at OK State.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: I think that's our toughest uh of the of the season.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: You you you know, uh last pod, you were saying that the Big 12 is looking softer than usual.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: Whenever I'm looking at this, I'm like, where's the easy stretch?
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: Because it doesn't look like it exists.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: I think the easy stretch is gonna be K-State, Iowa State, West Virginia.
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying Iowa State's easy.
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: I'm also not saying that West Virginia or K-State's necessarily easy, but they're West Virginia had a down year last year.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: K-State we've beaten in the past, you know, two or three years, which is nice.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: But uh they play that same style of ball that kind of you know, uh a lot of running back, a lot of a lot of blocking, not a lot of passing going on at K-State.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I think we usually play them pretty well, all things considered.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: And I think they're losing a lot of players.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: I think it's a young team at K-State.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Um, but and we'll we'll start to see how their coaching higher turns out for them, you know.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Five of the teams in the Big 12 are on year two coaches.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Wow, we have Texas Tech, we have West Virginia, Iowa State, Kansas State, Baylor, and Kansas.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: That's six.
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: Was Les Miles first year last year?
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: I think I think so.
- 18:49SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 18:50SPEAKER_03: I don't know, dude.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: This everything's starting to run again.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think Les Miles has come to love again.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: So no.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, I guess with all these all these new coaches and all these second-year coaches, uh, we'll see what they do with their programs.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: But um 60%.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 19:08SPEAKER_03: What?
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Of new of new coaches.
- 19:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 60% of new.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: But I I I included Baylor.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: Obviously, this year is their first year, so they don't technically count in the grouping I was talking about, but yeah, we're we're talking about 60% of the teams having new coaches.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: But uh we have three bye games this year, or three bye weeks.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Um that's gonna be nice.
- 19:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it'll be nice.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: You know, it's nice to get uh uh some rest before playing big teams.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: We have one before UT, so all we would have played is Houston Baptist, uh and then we have one the Hoskies.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Uh we have one before West Virginia, and we have one before we go to Stillwater and play my Gundy and his hair.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: So uh, you know, that's good.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: I think having a bye week before UT in OK State's cool.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Um get some rest before we play those programs.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: Um it but you know, it's still overall, it's it's it's a Big 12 schedule, man.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: There's these these teams are not easy, they never are.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Apparently, Kansas isn't easy anymore.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: Uh and so we gotta bring our A game for everybody.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: OU has always has been the team to beat for a long time now, but it's this is definitely a conference that uh that beats itself a bit.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's every every week, you know, you you can get something new.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: It's it's not necessarily the usual suspects are just gonna plow through everybody, you know, because OU usually drops one every year now, you know.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: So it's just not every team is you I just have our especially as a Texas Tech fan, I should say, it's it's hard to go in and mark W or L.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: And I'm guessing a lot of other people have that problem too, like K say fans and West Virginia fans.
- 20:52SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I think I think a lot of those opposing fans actually look at Texas Tech and they go, Well, you know, I guess it could swing.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: It might swing.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's an automatic W.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: So I mean, maybe maybe last year proved different, but uh if I'm an opposing fan, I I wouldn't want to come to Lubbock and play tech.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: No way, and especially a healthy tech.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: I'm sure most of the Big 12 fans that actually keep up uh understand how bruised we were uh with our with our player depth.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: So because we're on our third string quarterback.
- 21:27SPEAKER_02: You're playing Texas Tech, who's known for the quarterback, yeah, and we're on our third guy, you know.
- 21:32SPEAKER_02: That's so that's that's not exactly all gun and spot firing Texas Tech.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: For sure, for sure.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, did you have anything else on the schedule?
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: No, um, I think another thing worth noting is I kind of brought this up last pod was good home schedule, definitely a good looking home schedule.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, we had the very dangerous Houston Baptist Huskies, and we're
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: uh and we're hosting uh our arch nemesis the evil uh longhorns in lubing which is great we also have West Virginia at home Oklahoma the best team in the conference at home you love seeing that Baylor in the game for the for the first time in a while are coming to Lubbock I think it's been over 10 years since they went to Lubbock I I hated that neutral side game I you know I understand why they do it uh to get some recruits in Dallas and get them you know easy access to a tech game but uh neutral side games stink for sure it's it Dallas is such a big alumni base for both schools yeah so I I see I see the point of it but I'm with you I would rather just uh do home and home because I mean it's not like we're not it's this isn't the Red River river Red River rivalry you know we're not we're not the cotton bowl you know it's not the Red River rivalry I don't see the point of it can't call it the Red River thing what is I don't know dude they've changed it like sure it is I thought I saw the grec one no it's the Red River like showdown I think is the now is the one that it is now I don't know was the original the shootout I don't know they changed it like five times so much I know it's 10 years whether it's rivalry showdown shootout I don't care it's all fine well we just hope they both lose yeah we just just both of them just tie how about that take that tie take that tee hold that team I was actually uh last season I worked uh with the with the tailgate tour and so I got to see a lot of venues and uh that was one of the games that I got to and I was there for about five days uh up there in Dallas and uh the Cotton Bowl's cool Texas State Fair or I should say state fair of Texas they get upset when you call it uh the Texas State Fair uh it's the state fair of Texas Tex okay oh yeah dude he burned down last year was that last year he burned down yeah dude I can't I don't even know what happened I don't even know what happened last week yeah no doubt so our our sense of time is screwed right now I I don't even know what day it is what day is it Wednesday Thursday I don't know it's Thursday Thursday um but yeah man I think that's it for the uh for the schedule why don't you get into your uh your song of the week uh Tristan why don't you start us off here then think about this all day long I'm gonna give y'all another local Texas country guy his name is John Bauman I'm sure many of you are familiar with him he is no doubt one of the best songwriters in the genre or in music in general right now it's his his wordsmith is awesome so I'm gonna talk about his new album Country Shade and the song off of it I'm gonna talk about is Next Ride around the sun it's I love songs I'm a very sentimental guy so it's a it's a song about appreciating what you have in your life and making it count every day you know make it count on your next ride around the sun is just a great sentiment and I I'm gonna I'm gonna leave our listeners with that one so they can call their loved ones tell them that they love them and because you never know when they'll be gone and that's the point of the song so uh go give it a listen y'all very nice John Bauman you can't slow it down you can't turn it around nobody gonna get her ear make it count on the next rider elsewhere um my song of the week is uh it's Taylor Swift.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah dude I I really enjoyed her are you a Swifty?
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: I'm not a Swifty I haven't been a Swifty I think uh her transition to pop music uh was not one of my favorite things I and you know her country music before that was was fine uh you know it wasn't anything to rave about but it was it was funny lights Taylor Swift oh sure maybe like our song was fun but I don't know she got too like invested in the pop music and I I just kind of got turned off by her but uh the recent album I really enjoyed actually she uh got a couple different um uh influences from it a lot of folky vibes to it uh it's it's obviously it's called folklore so uh a lot of a lot of um kind of back home fun vibes to it uh but uh the song I have in mind is Exile uh featuring Bonnie Ver.
- 26:38SPEAKER_03: I'm the biggest Bonnie Bear fan he's like he's so weird his music's so weird it's like you just want to go out in the woods and just have your headphones in listen to Bonnie Bear.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: But uh they're they're both they both sound so pure in it and this is Bonnie Ver uses uh he uses a lot of like electronic uh voice uh changers in his songs but he's actually singing in his like real deep voice here and Taylor Swift when she's not using uh a lot of electronics in her in her singing uh she really does have a very pretty voice uh so go check it out exile I'm sure most of you have already listened to it Taylor Swift is very popular but uh would I have a mob chase me if I told you I've never heard of Bonnie Ver before this album you wouldn't have you wouldn't have a mob he's like he's like an underground like only I don't know I don't know I don't I I don't know if he's like indie yeah I guess he's indie he's like got a lot of different he's got some electronic uh in it he's got some like folk uh his first album uh for Emma was awesome there's a lot of a lot of good songs you've heard of some of them you've heard of Holocene and you've heard of uh skinny love I'm sure if those were to be played you would you would recognize them but uh uh yeah man he's he's a really talented dude and I I enjoy his music a lot but uh yeah exile Taylor Swift featuring Bonnie Vare is my song of the week so what am I to find in Mao you are my town I am an exile seeing you all I think I've seen this one before so give that a couple listens right after you listen to this podcast and uh let us know what you think um you got any shouts out Tristan I I do uh I just want to say how thankful I am for uh all the feedback we've had on episode one you know we I've just been getting tons of nice messages and support um and we we thank you all for listening um and I I just want to thank you right now again we love hearing from you so so keep on interacting with us and we look forward to hearing from you again.
