- 0:07Speaker 1: This Mead podcast. This episode is brought to you by
- 0:12Speaker 1: Sea Foam Motor Treatment, a proud podcast sponsor of Meat Eater.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:20Speaker 1: conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer new Art and
- 0:23Speaker 1: today we're joined by Janis Putellis, Rody Henderson, Chessire, Floyd
- 0:28Speaker 1: Seth Morris, Christine Siwiki, Hayden Sammick and Corey Calkins. This
- 0:32Speaker 1: is a ten round quiz show with questions from meat
- 0:35Speaker 1: eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking,
- 0:39Speaker 1: and there's a prize. Meat Eater will donate five hundred
- 0:42Speaker 1: dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing in
- 0:46Speaker 1: each week. Here on meat Eater Trivia, we reveal a
- 0:49Speaker 1: new stat this week. We're looking at player performance in
- 0:52Speaker 1: the conservation category. The top performer is Rick Hutton, who
- 0:57Speaker 1: has gotten seventy five percent of conservation questions. But here
- 1:01Speaker 1: is the asterisk. Rick has only had eight questions asked
- 1:05Speaker 1: in the conservation category. So if we forget about Rick
- 1:08Speaker 1: and look at our more regular competitors, then we have
- 1:11Speaker 1: Steve at the top with sixty four percent, followed by
- 1:15Speaker 1: Brody at sixty one percent, Janis at fifty six percent,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Cal at fifty five percent, Sam James at fifty five percent,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and Hayden at fifty three percent. They are our only
- 1:26Speaker 1: players who get more than fifty percent of conservation questions, right.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I think if Rick had more games under his belt,
- 1:34Speaker 1: he would still be the top for sure. He knows
- 1:37Speaker 1: a lot about that stuff. As we've discussed before, Rick
- 1:39Speaker 1: has one of the most interesting stat lines in trivia
- 1:42Speaker 1: where he's like the highest performer in hunting and conservation,
- 1:44Speaker 1: but our lowest performer in fishing and cooking. So yeah,
- 1:48Speaker 1: Rick needs to work on those areas. Here's our zero
- 1:52Speaker 1: percent or question of the week. This is from episode
- 1:54Speaker 1: three sixty five and the topic is gear. If you
- 1:57Speaker 1: know the answer, you can shout it out. Five states
- 2:01Speaker 1: have a firearm on their state flag. Named one of
- 2:04Speaker 1: those states Yanni. You were on this episode. I know Michigan.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Michigan is a correct answer. That's one of them. You
- 2:14Speaker 1: got four more, Wyoming one, Wyoming is one. You got
- 2:17Speaker 1: two of them, three more to go, New Jersey, Texas, No, Montana,
- 2:25Speaker 1: no Kentuck, Arkansas, Oklahoma, no start alphabetically, any correct answers
- 2:33Speaker 1: that were given in that episode where California, Virginia, Tennessee, Wisconsin,
- 2:38Speaker 1: New Hampshire, Texas, and Montana. The correct answers were Delaware,
- 2:42Speaker 1: West Virginia, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wyoming. Those are the states
- 2:46Speaker 1: that have a firearm on their flag. How long you
- 2:50Speaker 1: think you would have taken you to come up with
- 2:51Speaker 1: the Delaware, West Virginia, and Minnesota As long as it
- 2:55Speaker 1: takes to run through all fifties. Ok, we have some
- 2:59Speaker 1: housekeeping to In a previous game of trivia, I asked
- 3:02Speaker 1: what is the only subspecies of turkey in the World
- 3:05Speaker 1: Slam that can't be hunted in America. The correct answer
- 3:08Speaker 1: was oscillated, but Steve called me out for identifying oscillated
- 3:13Speaker 1: turkeys as a subspecies when they are really their own species.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So I looked it up and Steve was right. Oscillated
- 3:19Speaker 1: turkeys are their own species and do not fall under
- 3:22Speaker 1: the umbrella of wild turkey subspecies that include easterns Mariam's Osciola,
- 3:28Speaker 1: Rio grand and Goulds. But the rest of the question
- 3:31Speaker 1: remains accurate. Oscillated birds are the only turkeys in the
- 3:35Speaker 1: World Slam that can't be hunted in the United States, Yanni,
- 3:39Speaker 1: do you know that that oscillated are their own species? Yes,
- 3:43Speaker 1: Now you haven't killed one, but you've probably come the
- 3:45Speaker 1: closest to killing one by sort of planning a trip
- 3:48Speaker 1: multiple times. We multiple planned trips and they've Yeah, Steve
- 3:55Speaker 1: said it was the site a sight. These issues that
- 3:57Speaker 1: like with firearms, right, that's transportation. The last one, the
- 4:04Speaker 1: last one that we planned, it didn't happen. We had
- 4:07Speaker 1: it all set out and then the guy that we
- 4:10Speaker 1: were gonna go with was like, oh, sorry, I didn't
- 4:13Speaker 1: get tags for you guys. Oh that that was the hangoff. Yeah,
- 4:17Speaker 1: oh man, Yeah, but it's to me like he never
- 4:19Speaker 1: really was gonna get tags for us. Yeah, and it
- 4:24Speaker 1: was gonna be a sight he's issue for us when
- 4:27Speaker 1: he was like, yeah, come down anyway to shoot a turkey.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And when we got to there, you know, to got
- 4:32Speaker 1: to the border, they're gonna be like no, no, no, no no.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I mean there was a lot of a lot of
- 4:37Speaker 1: red flags with it that we didn't have when we
- 4:40Speaker 1: were planning it, Yanni. When you done working, Yeah, when
- 4:46Speaker 1: you do eventually get one, are you gonna like do
- 4:48Speaker 1: a full amount of it? No, sir, what would you do.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It's like a traditional tail fan. Oh, just do a
- 4:54Speaker 1: tail fan. Probably hang the spurs nearby it. I don't
- 4:58Speaker 1: even know if those suckers have be I don't know.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I had a big, old, giant, very razor sharp spurs.
- 5:07Speaker 1: But yeah, I'll maybe get a picture, you know, me
- 5:10Speaker 1: and Steve and the guy whoever else is there with
- 5:13Speaker 1: my burden made it on the wall. Maybe sess wife
- 5:15Speaker 1: can draw that for you then someday to commemorate its.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Also in the premious game, we had a multiple choice
- 5:23Speaker 1: question about which world record fish is biggest. The choices
- 5:26Speaker 1: were blue catfish, common carp, lake sturgeon, and alligator gar.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The correct answer was alligator gar, but in the follow
- 5:32Speaker 1: up fact to it, I said the world record wait
- 5:35Speaker 1: for a lake sturgeon was one hundred and sixty eight pounds.
- 5:37Speaker 1: That was a number I got from the IGFA record book,
- 5:40Speaker 1: But they don't take into account weights of fish that
- 5:42Speaker 1: have been speared, which is how many of the continent's
- 5:45Speaker 1: biggest lakers have been harvested. So that puts the world
- 5:49Speaker 1: record for all methods at two hundred twelve pounds, which
- 5:52Speaker 1: was speared in Lake Winnebago in twenty ten. But that's
- 5:55Speaker 1: still second to the world record alligator gar which is
- 5:58Speaker 1: two hundred seventy nine pounds. They should be index for
- 6:03Speaker 1: this round is a four, so our winners should get
- 6:05Speaker 1: about eight correct answers. And with that we're onto the
- 6:08Speaker 1: game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil, Look, I need
- 6:13Speaker 1: to know what I stand to win everything. I'm saying,
- 6:17Speaker 1: just tend to win everything. Game on suckers. Now, Brodie,
- 6:28Speaker 1: you were saying I looked cold. Seth is dressed up
- 6:31Speaker 1: to the same amount of warmth, like like our full
- 6:35Speaker 1: on outer layer on, and then like another one behind you.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Let's just so was Hayden Brody? Well me and you
- 6:41Speaker 1: have stocking hats on. Corey, Oh yeah, maybe it's your beard.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I look cold, Seth with just the mustaches on, Seth
- 6:49Speaker 1: looks hardy. Christina has an actual code on. Yeah, I
- 6:54Speaker 1: was cold then I got in here and not ye
- 6:56Speaker 1: very hot. Question one. The topic is fishing and this
- 6:59Speaker 1: would be multiple This first great question comes to us
- 7:02Speaker 1: via Seth Daughters. If you have a question you think
- 7:04Speaker 1: it's right for meat Eater Trivia, you can send it
- 7:06Speaker 1: to Trivia to meadata dot com. According to a twenty
- 7:10Speaker 1: sixteen US Fish and Wildlife survey, Which of these things
- 7:15Speaker 1: do anglers spend the most money on? Is it licenses,
- 7:19Speaker 1: food and lodging, books and magazines, or transportation. Again, according
- 7:26Speaker 1: to a twenty sixteen survey, which of these things do
- 7:29Speaker 1: anglers spend the most money on? Licenses, food and lodging,
- 7:34Speaker 1: books and magazines, or transportation? And these things are all
- 7:37Speaker 1: specific to phishing. It's not just like they went to
- 7:41Speaker 1: you know, Mexico and stayed at all inclusive. Well, do
- 7:44Speaker 1: you just think about that. I'm gonna step out of
- 7:46Speaker 1: the office and turn on the fan in the podcast studio. Okay,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I feel like that's kind of a trick question, you think, so, well,
- 7:54Speaker 1: it is never a trick question. No, I know that,
- 7:56Speaker 1: But like, unless it is, it's like I would I
- 7:58Speaker 1: would say, like, define this, That's what I would say.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I know what you're getting at Chester. I agree about
- 8:05Speaker 1: the specificity of I could maybe help you out if
- 8:08Speaker 1: you have some specific questions. I could maybe provide some
- 8:11Speaker 1: specific details. I looked at the study. Define travel transportation transfer. Yeah,
- 8:17Speaker 1: so this wouldn't be like the gas you put in
- 8:19Speaker 1: your boat, but it's like the gas you put in
- 8:21Speaker 1: your pickup or a plane ticket you buy things specific
- 8:24Speaker 1: to getting to the destination where you're going to start fishing. Corey,
- 8:28Speaker 1: what do you got define food and lodging. Food and
- 8:30Speaker 1: lodging is what you spend on a trip. You gotta
- 8:34Speaker 1: go out to the restaurant each night, you need to
- 8:36Speaker 1: pay for a hotel, rumor a camping spot. That is
- 8:38Speaker 1: food and logic light. I suppose if that is specific
- 8:45Speaker 1: to the fishing trip, then yes or three. I don't
- 8:50Speaker 1: think you'd categorize it under a transportation, books and magazines,
- 8:55Speaker 1: maybe a license. It's that demanding of an item. Everybody
- 9:00Speaker 1: have an answer? Again, Your choices are licenses, food and lodging,
- 9:03Speaker 1: books and magazines, transportation. I can tell you which one
- 9:07Speaker 1: I spend the most money on. Okay, see if you
- 9:10Speaker 1: agree with the rest of America. Does everybody have an answer?
- 9:15Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Hayden saying transportation,
- 9:19Speaker 1: Christine saying transportation, Brodie saying transportation, Corey saying food and lodging,
- 9:25Speaker 1: Chester saying books and magazines. Now seth Chester, Chester, We've
- 9:30Speaker 1: had this issue before. You shouldn't write ABCD, you should
- 9:34Speaker 1: write a whole thing. You wrote c which wanted food
- 9:40Speaker 1: and lodging. Okay, Chester says, because food and lodging, books
- 9:46Speaker 1: and magazines. That's the worst answer I'll give you that Chester,
- 9:50Speaker 1: books and magazines is not the correct We have Seth
- 9:54Speaker 1: and Jannis saying food and lodging. Now, before you answer this,
- 9:59Speaker 1: I wasn't paying atten and so maybe you uh you said, yeah,
- 10:02Speaker 1: is this like during the course of a year, or
- 10:05Speaker 1: this would be like specific to a fishing trip, like
- 10:07Speaker 1: you're going to Canyon Ferry to catch some perch, how
- 10:10Speaker 1: do you spend your money? Or maybe maybe you do
- 10:12Speaker 1: a five day trip to go to Colorado to go
- 10:16Speaker 1: fly fishing for a specific hatch. It's the money you
- 10:19Speaker 1: spend on that seems very vague. Man. The correct answer
- 10:24Speaker 1: is food and lodging. Like dude, American angler spent about
- 10:31Speaker 1: forty six point one billion dollars on fishing in twenty sixteen.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Food and lodging was responsible for seventeen percent of that,
- 10:39Speaker 1: which is equal to seven point eight billion dollars. Transportation
- 10:43Speaker 1: accounted for five billion dollars, licenses accounted for six hundred million,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and books and magazines accounted for one hundred million. It
- 10:52Speaker 1: may it makes sense because now I'm thinking about all
- 10:54Speaker 1: like the like the places in upstate New York who
- 10:58Speaker 1: like have only money because of the tourism around fishing.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I should have thought of that question to the topic
- 11:06Speaker 1: is gear? Bass Pro agreed to purchase this competitor with
- 11:12Speaker 1: one hundred thirty four stores in twenty twenty, but called
- 11:16Speaker 1: off the deal less than a year later. Scourge was
- 11:22Speaker 1: what year? Bass Pro agreed to purchase this competitor with
- 11:26Speaker 1: one hundred thirty four stores in twenty twenty, but called
- 11:30Speaker 1: off the deal less than a year later. Topic is gear?
- 11:35Speaker 1: We had a lot of people writing answers before I
- 11:36Speaker 1: finished the question, and then the erasers came out again.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Bass Pro agreed to purchase this competitor with one hundred
- 11:44Speaker 1: thirty four stores in twenty twenty, but called off the
- 11:47Speaker 1: deal less than a year later. Oh you got it.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's between two and I it's fifty fifty. Does everybody
- 12:00Speaker 1: have an answer? Okay, Yanni, it seems as though it's
- 12:04Speaker 1: not down to two for him quite yet. I just
- 12:09Speaker 1: one more time here. Bass Pro agreed to purchase this
- 12:12Speaker 1: competitor with one hundred thirty four stores in twenty twenty,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but called off the deal less than a year later.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Be honest, how are we doing. We'll tell you this though.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I'll tell you too. Yeah, after you tell me one
- 12:27Speaker 1: of my answers. Right, I'm not gonna help you at all, Yanni.
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think he has four answers written down. I was
- 12:34Speaker 1: gonna start doing some scribbling. Yeah, how many you got
- 12:41Speaker 1: on there? I have got four? I think? Uh can
- 12:50Speaker 1: I say that you can just wait a minute, Okayannest,
- 12:56Speaker 1: we're waiting on you, waiting on you. Everybody else has
- 12:59Speaker 1: an answer. They all look confident to Yanni, no pressure.
- 13:04Speaker 1: WHOA that's proba to purchase this competitor with one hundred
- 13:08Speaker 1: and thirty four stores, but called off the deal lesson
- 13:10Speaker 1: a year later. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 13:13Speaker 1: have Hayden saying Gander Mountain crossed out shields, Christine saying shields,
- 13:19Speaker 1: Brody saying sportsman's warehouse, Cordy saying Gander Mountain, Chester saying
- 13:24Speaker 1: sportsman's warehouse, saying sportsman's warehouse, Jannis saying sportsman's warehouse. The
- 13:31Speaker 1: correct answer is sportsman's warehouse. Oh, baby, Hayden, I thought
- 13:36Speaker 1: you were going to be you know, I was so close.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Here's why, I too kind of knew I was wrong.
- 13:41Speaker 1: As soon as I wrote, I think they just plumb
- 13:44Speaker 1: went out of business. In like twenty sixteen, Bander Mountain
- 13:47Speaker 1: was actually purchased by Camping World, who has been part
- 13:50Speaker 1: of a trivia question in the past. So Gander Mountain
- 13:52Speaker 1: still sort of exists. I think feel like they're on
- 13:56Speaker 1: life support, but they're now part of the Camping World brand.
- 13:58Speaker 1: You know, it's much for an experience going into Cabellas
- 14:01Speaker 1: these days than it was before based not as magical,
- 14:04Speaker 1: not as magical, not as magical, No Chester. What thoughts
- 14:08Speaker 1: did you have on this question that you were reluctant
- 14:10Speaker 1: to share. Well, it was like what Hayden said. I
- 14:13Speaker 1: thought they well, I know there's a couple of them
- 14:16Speaker 1: still open, but I thought they pretty much went out
- 14:18Speaker 1: of business. And that was prior to twenty twenty. So
- 14:21Speaker 1: that helped me write down Sportsman's Warehouse. In December of
- 14:24Speaker 1: twenty twenty, Sportsman's Warehouse agreed to a merger with the
- 14:28Speaker 1: Great American Outdoors Group, which is the parent company of
- 14:32Speaker 1: Bass Pro, but just under a year later, the acquisition
- 14:35Speaker 1: was called off when feedback from the FTC made both
- 14:38Speaker 1: companies believe that the deal wouldn't be approved. The FTC
- 14:42Speaker 1: competition director said the seven hundred and eighty five million
- 14:45Speaker 1: dollar transaction would have hurt consumers through increased prices and
- 14:49Speaker 1: reduced offerings. Look at the FTC looking out for you
- 14:55Speaker 1: go government. But only if only they had done that deal,
- 14:58Speaker 1: probably like five years sooner, because I'm sure if bass
- 15:01Speaker 1: Pro hadn't already purchased Cabellas, it would have worked out
- 15:04Speaker 1: for sports as unhouse there were a couple of years
- 15:06Speaker 1: too late. But look at it how it is now.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Who in this room would rather go into a bass
- 15:11Speaker 1: Pro Cabellas versus a Sportsman's to get gear or get
- 15:14Speaker 1: advice or info? Are we assuming that sportsman's actually has
- 15:18Speaker 1: stuff in stock? Or yes? I would just say currently
- 15:21Speaker 1: for fishing stuff bass Pro cabellas, Yeah, shields, lunch and
- 15:28Speaker 1: look at some like rotting bass women around. No one
- 15:32Speaker 1: needs to do that. It's totally part of the experience.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Roasted nuts. Question three. The topic is woodsmanship. What type
- 15:44Speaker 1: of man made structure is often referred to as a
- 15:48Speaker 1: drowning machine? What type of man made structure is often
- 15:54Speaker 1: referred to as a drowning machine? Quick answer from Hayden
- 16:02Speaker 1: and Brodie rest of the room has yet to come
- 16:05Speaker 1: up with anything. Can I draw a picture of it? No? Again,
- 16:11Speaker 1: specific question? Be specific. If you thought the answer was
- 16:15Speaker 1: white tailed deer, you need to put white tailed deer.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Deer would not be good enough. Again, the question is
- 16:20Speaker 1: what type of manmade structure is often referred to you
- 16:23Speaker 1: as a drowning machine? Be specific? You should put down
- 16:28Speaker 1: white tail deer for your answer. See if that works
- 16:31Speaker 1: with a hyphen, won't get into it. What's the topic again, woodsmanship?
- 16:38Speaker 1: What type of manmade structure is often referred to as
- 16:41Speaker 1: a drowning machine? Now, Brodie, do you know this or
- 16:45Speaker 1: are you just taking an educated guess. I'll argue with
- 16:48Speaker 1: you if I don't get it right me too, like,
- 16:51Speaker 1: really really argue with you because I have some bona fides. Okay,
- 16:58Speaker 1: Folks have asked me before who sits in eve seat
- 17:00Speaker 1: when he's not here because they feel as though someone
- 17:02Speaker 1: takes his argument. No, I would never sit in Steve's seat.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I would feel uncomfortable. Someone has to take up that
- 17:10Speaker 1: niche though. In the arguing space, does everybody have an answer?
- 17:15Speaker 1: I do? Chester Corey knows this one. You to tell
- 17:20Speaker 1: me what a drowning machine is? Am I going to
- 17:24Speaker 1: be kicking myself? I don't know. Yep, you think I am.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I don't. I can't think of anything. All right, does
- 17:31Speaker 1: everybody else have an answer? Hayden? Are you drawing? Okay,
- 17:35Speaker 1: so everyone's ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. Hayden
- 17:39Speaker 1: saying topwater damn. Christine without an answer, you say Ridge,
- 17:45Speaker 1: Corey saying what's that? Say? Clack a craft Chester without
- 17:52Speaker 1: an answer, Seth saying raft janis saying low head damn.
- 17:57Speaker 1: The correct answer is low head damn or diversion damn.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I've never heard it called a tomp. Well, I like
- 18:04Speaker 1: knew how to describe, but what it was, I didn't
- 18:06Speaker 1: know the technical term for it. I drew a very
- 18:08Speaker 1: good diet. You did, You drew exactly what happens, But
- 18:11Speaker 1: they're not called tomp. I'm still going to argue that
- 18:13Speaker 1: bridge should be included in there too, But nobody calls
- 18:15Speaker 1: them drowning machines. Again, it's it's this. I've heard people
- 18:18Speaker 1: calm drowning, Okay, not according to other fl I think
- 18:22Speaker 1: we would call that us. What other folks I see this,
- 18:25Speaker 1: uh like engineers refer to them? Is the engineer DNR
- 18:29Speaker 1: in Iowa refers, I could I could see like an
- 18:34Speaker 1: argument for being out west here with the bridges, because
- 18:37Speaker 1: that's oh yeah, and back east. Man canoes get wrapped
- 18:40Speaker 1: around bridges all the time. But I think a bridge
- 18:44Speaker 1: is more of a strainer when it gets when it
- 18:47Speaker 1: gets to be you know, dangerous to humans. Lowhead dams
- 18:51Speaker 1: drown about fifty people each year in the United States.
- 18:54Speaker 1: This happens when someone goes over a lowhead dam and
- 18:57Speaker 1: gets caught in the recirculating currents below the surface. A
- 19:00Speaker 1: task force consisting of government officials and nonprofits is looking
- 19:04Speaker 1: to use AI technology to cross satellite images and identify
- 19:08Speaker 1: every lowhead damn in America. This would theoretically lead to
- 19:12Speaker 1: better signage at those sites and prevent more deaths. Question forward,
- 19:17Speaker 1: the topic is hunting. This next great question comes to
- 19:19Speaker 1: us via Wayne Rattan. If you have a question you
- 19:21Speaker 1: think is right from meat eat to trivia, you can
- 19:23Speaker 1: send it to Trivia at the meadeater dot com. According
- 19:27Speaker 1: to the Wild Sheep Foundation, there are two subspecies of
- 19:31Speaker 1: thin horn sheep. Name both of them. According to the
- 19:38Speaker 1: Wild Sheep Foundation, there are two subspecies of thin horned sheep.
- 19:43Speaker 1: I need you to name them both. Quick answer from Hayden,
- 19:47Speaker 1: Janis Brodie Christine the other side of the room, though,
- 19:52Speaker 1: Seth Chester Cory still thinking Nope, not thinking, Seth got it, Christine,
- 19:58Speaker 1: you got this one. Let me think again again, looking
- 20:02Speaker 1: for both subspecies of thin horn sheep. M be honest.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You had a quick answer, but that grunt made it
- 20:10Speaker 1: seem like you're not real confident. I'm pretty confident. Ok.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I read you wrong. Then I can't help you. What's
- 20:22Speaker 1: the de line of Christine? Do you have like five
- 20:23Speaker 1: answers written now some sheeps, but it's completely off? Which
- 20:29Speaker 1: it is again? Looking for the two subspecies of thin
- 20:32Speaker 1: horn According to the Wild Sheep Foundation, you might want
- 20:35Speaker 1: to help her now because later in her current position,
- 20:44Speaker 1: how do even very good man. I'm just gonna give
- 20:48Speaker 1: me one second here, ka, I think we're waiting on you.
- 20:52Speaker 1: You're gonna need me one day. White ones and the
- 20:57Speaker 1: real wooly ones. You would have gotten in big trouble
- 21:01Speaker 1: for saying what you just did. If the old mister
- 21:04Speaker 1: Brunella was saying here, oh yeah, yeah yeah, Chester HR's
- 21:12Speaker 1: ears perked up over here and reveal your answers. We
- 21:18Speaker 1: have Hayden saying Muflon and doll. Christine sang Muflon, Brodie
- 21:23Speaker 1: saying doll in Stone, Cory sang dolls and Stone, Chester
- 21:28Speaker 1: saying muflon and dahl, Seth saying Stone and dol, Jannis
- 21:33Speaker 1: saying doll and Fannon. The correct answer is doll sheep
- 21:39Speaker 1: and stone sheep. The room did pretty well, what well?
- 21:43Speaker 1: Fanon's a mix between the two, So here we go.
- 21:45Speaker 1: The doll sheep is naming after naturalist William Heay Doll,
- 21:49Speaker 1: who documented the animal in eighteen eighty four. The stone
- 21:53Speaker 1: sheep is named after aj Stone, who documented the animal
- 21:56Speaker 1: in eighteen ninety seven, and some groups recognize a third subscs,
- 22:00Speaker 1: the fan in sheep, which is named after John Fannon,
- 22:03Speaker 1: but most biologists considered the fan in cheap just a
- 22:06Speaker 1: darker color variant of the doll sheep, And be honest,
- 22:10Speaker 1: the Wild Cheap Foundation does not list them as a
- 22:12Speaker 1: thin horn subspecies, so we're not going to give it
- 22:14Speaker 1: to you. But that was a deep cut putting down Fannon.
- 22:17Speaker 1: So there's no thin horn species like on the other
- 22:20Speaker 1: side of the world, not on Wild Cheap Foundation's website
- 22:25Speaker 1: unless they don't maybe they just don't care about Asia.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I don't know. A moufon is not not a thin horn.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I wonder if that's good. Are mouflons like kind of
- 22:36Speaker 1: like domestic ish like? Is that like kind of like
- 22:38Speaker 1: a ferreal hog versus bore? Yeah, that's kind of what
- 22:41Speaker 1: I was saying. They do live in the wild in
- 22:44Speaker 1: someplace in this world. But in Texas. Question five, the
- 22:50Speaker 1: topic is cooking. This burger was invented in Kentucky sixty
- 22:55Speaker 1: years ago when a diner started placing bean cans on
- 22:58Speaker 1: patties while they cook. Again, this burger was invented in
- 23:06Speaker 1: Kentucky sixty years ago when a diner started placing bean
- 23:10Speaker 1: cans on patties while they cooked. A confident room, as
- 23:14Speaker 1: we learned before, seven percent of our questions are answered
- 23:18Speaker 1: by everyone in the room correctly. Is maybe one of
- 23:22Speaker 1: those seven percenters? Everybody have an answer, Go ahead and
- 23:27Speaker 1: reveal your no. No, I didn't look at it. Okay, Okay.
- 23:32Speaker 1: We have Hayden saying smash, Christine saying smash, Brody sang smash,
- 23:36Speaker 1: Corey saying smash Chester saying smash Chester. What did you
- 23:40Speaker 1: cross out or right? I just completely didn't even listen
- 23:45Speaker 1: to your question very well, and I just wrote like
- 23:48Speaker 1: hobo burger because of beans, but you said placed it
- 23:51Speaker 1: on it while they're cooked. I'm like, I make these
- 23:52Speaker 1: all the time, smash and Janie saying smash burger. Everybody
- 23:57Speaker 1: got it. The correct answer is smash burger. The restaurant
- 24:01Speaker 1: that started this craze was called Dairy Cheer, which markets
- 24:04Speaker 1: itself the home of the smash burger. If you want
- 24:07Speaker 1: to learn how to cook one for yourself, then go
- 24:09Speaker 1: to the meadeator dot com and check out Danielle Pruitt's
- 24:11Speaker 1: recipe called Venison smash Burgers. Phil, we are halfway through
- 24:16Speaker 1: the game of trivia, give us a scoreboard update. In
- 24:18Speaker 1: last place tied up Our Hayden and Christine was one
- 24:22Speaker 1: point apiece. Thanks for coming up. Next, so we have
- 24:25Speaker 1: Corey Chester and Barodi all tied with three points apiece
- 24:29Speaker 1: and tied for first place are Janis Poutelis and Seth
- 24:32Speaker 1: Morris with four points. Good work. Question six. The topic
- 24:48Speaker 1: is conservation. This next great question comes to is via
- 24:51Speaker 1: Matt Krause. If you have a question you think is
- 24:54Speaker 1: right for meat Eatter Trivia, you can send it to
- 24:56Speaker 1: trivia to meadeater dot com. What mammals silhouette is shown
- 25:01Speaker 1: on the current National Wildlife Federation logo. What mammals silhouette
- 25:09Speaker 1: is shown on the current National Wildlife Federation's logo. Nobody
- 25:15Speaker 1: has come up with an answer yet. Yanni thinks he
- 25:17Speaker 1: has it. The rest of the room not very confident specific.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Needs you to be specific. So it's got to be
- 25:24Speaker 1: a white tail. If you think the answer is whitetail deer,
- 25:27Speaker 1: I need you to say whitetail deer, not just dear.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Yanni is the only one who's come up with an answer.
- 25:33Speaker 1: Can you other folks picture it? Though? Do you have
- 25:35Speaker 1: any idea what it looks like? Christine says, yes, Brodie,
- 25:39Speaker 1: how well do you know this logo? I'm drawing a
- 25:43Speaker 1: total point? Okay? Looking for the mammal's silhouette that's shown
- 25:48Speaker 1: on the current National Wildlife Federation logo NWF NWF A
- 25:57Speaker 1: mammal's silhouette for the individual state ones, Okay. I don't
- 26:04Speaker 1: know if that'll be helpful. No, I don't think it will.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Most of the room has yet to come up with
- 26:11Speaker 1: an answer. Seems like you're gonna know it or not
- 26:14Speaker 1: know it. Looking for the mammals silhouette, Yeah, Yanni how
- 26:20Speaker 1: confident are you? I don't this little giving anybody a tip.
- 26:25Speaker 1: But there's another one that's w WF okay that I
- 26:28Speaker 1: believe also has a mammal silhouette. Yes, that's a panda.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I'll tell you when when I when I went through
- 26:39Speaker 1: this round of trivia with my wife, she answered panda,
- 26:42Speaker 1: realizing afterwards that that's WWF. I'm changing my answer. W WF. Oh,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm sorry. Well, did you have panda down? I did so,
- 27:04Speaker 1: He's saying National Wild Federation panda subspecies. All right, everybody,
- 27:14Speaker 1: but Johnny, does everybody have an answer? No? No, I
- 27:21Speaker 1: have one. You just put down panda just to be
- 27:24Speaker 1: a team player. Yeah, I'm here to kick ass. But
- 27:29Speaker 1: I can't believe I just got a answer out of you. Damn,
- 27:33Speaker 1: that was way too much info. I thought I thought
- 27:35Speaker 1: it was all put out there. Once Corey said that
- 27:38Speaker 1: they had a hand, it felt safe to uh yeah,
- 27:44Speaker 1: butt him. Now, Now, what what just happened over here
- 27:50Speaker 1: with Corey? And said when I gathered with Seth put
- 27:55Speaker 1: down a non mammal, to which Corey said, hey, it
- 27:58Speaker 1: needs to be a mammal. Brodie, are you ready? Yes,
- 28:04Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Aiden saying
- 28:08Speaker 1: grizzly bear, Christine saying black bear. Brody sang grizzly Corey
- 28:13Speaker 1: sang elk Chester saying bison, saying bison. Jannis sang dolphin.
- 28:20Speaker 1: I was thinking wale might have been nobody got it.
- 28:23Speaker 1: The correct answer is raccoon. Oh. The National Wildlife Federation
- 28:29Speaker 1: has had six logos since nineteen thirty six. The first
- 28:33Speaker 1: time he featured a bald eagle. In the nineteen nineties,
- 28:37Speaker 1: the organization switched to a different logo that featured a
- 28:40Speaker 1: deer and an eagle, and in twenty sixteen, the group
- 28:43Speaker 1: updated their logo to the current iteration, which shows their
- 28:47Speaker 1: mascot ranger Rick the raccoon Spencer. I did write down
- 28:52Speaker 1: bald eagle. I thought I didn't quite pay attention to
- 28:56Speaker 1: the mammal thing. Question seven, the topic is biology. Brian
- 29:02Speaker 1: shrimp are more commonly known by this marketing nickname. Really,
- 29:09Speaker 1: Brian shrimp are more commonly known by this marketing nickname.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Brody and Jannis think they know it, No, Brian Okay,
- 29:20Speaker 1: Brian shrimp. Brian shrimp are more commonly known by this
- 29:24Speaker 1: marketing nickname. Be honest. On the last question, you were
- 29:29Speaker 1: closer with your first answer panda than you were with dolphin.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Didn't work out though, Brian Shrimp more commonly known by
- 29:40Speaker 1: this marketing nickname. Yeah, we're commonly known to who everybody?
- 29:46Speaker 1: Do you have this one? Right? I think so? Okay,
- 29:50Speaker 1: I think so, Christine? Do you have an answer? Yes, okay,
- 29:55Speaker 1: I think everyone. There's not a certain group of people
- 29:58Speaker 1: that might be more familiar with the name you're looking for,
- 30:02Speaker 1: not gonna help you out anymore. Like maybe Westerners have
- 30:05Speaker 1: plenty of help this game. Hayden, are you ready, Christine?
- 30:10Speaker 1: Are you ready? Humans under ten? Yeah? Yeah, oscar panosis
- 30:18Speaker 1: just do it at work in the h R department
- 30:23Speaker 1: of their company. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 30:26Speaker 1: have Hayden saying sweet shrimp, Christine without an answer. Brodie
- 30:30Speaker 1: sang water fleas, Corey sang prawns. Chester, you're saying cocktail, shrimp,
- 30:36Speaker 1: Seth saying prawns, janis saying popcorn. Nobody got it. The
- 30:42Speaker 1: correct answer is sea monkeys. The sea monkeys marketing name
- 30:49Speaker 1: was developed in nineteen fifty seven, which is one year
- 30:52Speaker 1: after ant farms became a novelty pet. Sea monkeys were
- 30:55Speaker 1: initially sold as a product called Instant Life and were
- 30:59Speaker 1: available for just forty nine cents. They were intensely marketed
- 31:02Speaker 1: to kids, with the creator claiming that he purchased three
- 31:05Speaker 1: point two million pages of comic book ads each year
- 31:09Speaker 1: in the nineteen sixties. I wanted a little sea monkey,
- 31:13Speaker 1: never got as a child, never got one. Okay, did
- 31:16Speaker 1: anybody here have sea monkeys? Now? There's a great South
- 31:19Speaker 1: Park episode revolving around sea monkeys. Seen it before? Question eight?
- 31:25Speaker 1: The topic is fishing. This is our listener question in
- 31:27Speaker 1: the week, which was won by Brett Cefell for sending
- 31:30Speaker 1: this great question. Brett is going to get a book
- 31:32Speaker 1: signed by Steve. According to the USGS, there are nine
- 31:37Speaker 1: states where less than one percent of the state is
- 31:41Speaker 1: covered in water. Named three of those states. According to
- 31:47Speaker 1: the USGS, there are nine states where less than one
- 31:51Speaker 1: percent of the state is covered in water. Named three
- 31:56Speaker 1: of those states. Spencer, what'd you say of the Shelby
- 31:59Speaker 1: index on this round one? It's a four winners should
- 32:02Speaker 1: get eight. But I think we've had a couple back
- 32:04Speaker 1: to back, maybe back to back questions where nobody got
- 32:06Speaker 1: it right. It's gonna hurt the room score. Phil, how
- 32:10Speaker 1: do you think you'd be doing in this round. I'm
- 32:13Speaker 1: always like a two. Okay, I think almost every episode. Yeah,
- 32:17Speaker 1: how's the room doing. Do folks have three states written down? Oh? Yeah, Seth?
- 32:24Speaker 1: He said, there is nine of them, nine of them
- 32:26Speaker 1: that are less than water. I need three of those nine. Christine,
- 32:33Speaker 1: are you ready go ahead and reveal your answers? We
- 32:37Speaker 1: have Hayden saying Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Christine saying Kansas, Oklahoma, Nevada,
- 32:44Speaker 1: Brody saying Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Corey saying Hawaii, Kansas, Texas, Chester,
- 32:52Speaker 1: you're saying Arizona, California, Nevada, Seth saying New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona,
- 32:59Speaker 1: Janis say Nevada, New Mexico, and Kansas. The nine states
- 33:05Speaker 1: are New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Nevada, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming,
- 33:12Speaker 1: and West Virginia. I think the room he did pretty well.
- 33:17Speaker 1: According to the USGS, the driest state is New Mexico,
- 33:21Speaker 1: where just point two percent of the state is covered
- 33:25Speaker 1: in water. That's followed by Arizona at point three percent,
- 33:29Speaker 1: Colorado at point four percent, Kansas at point six percent, Nevada, Nebraska, Iowa,
- 33:36Speaker 1: and Wyoming at point seven percent. In West Virginia at
- 33:39Speaker 1: point eight percent. Most surprised at with Arizona with the
- 33:44Speaker 1: big river and reservoir that it holds not enough to
- 33:47Speaker 1: make up for all that desert. Phil, we have two
- 33:50Speaker 1: questions left. Give us a scoreboard update. It looks like
- 33:53Speaker 1: eliminated from the game are Christine and Hayden Christine having
- 33:59Speaker 1: one point, Hayden having two points. Still in the game, though,
- 34:01Speaker 1: are chatting Corey with three points, apiece, Brody with four
- 34:05Speaker 1: and Jannis and Seth tied up with five points. Who
- 34:10Speaker 1: do we have at the topic with five points and
- 34:12Speaker 1: set Yannis and Seth. Question nine the topic is hunt
- 34:17Speaker 1: Let's limit the walleye fishing questions? Question nine the topic
- 34:22Speaker 1: is hunting? What nonprofit stops taking critically ill children hunting
- 34:28Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety six due to criticisms from animal rights groups?
- 34:34Speaker 1: What nonprofit stops taking critically ill children hunting in nineteen
- 34:39Speaker 1: ninety six due to criticisms from animal rights groups? Quick
- 34:44Speaker 1: answer from Seth, He's got a little confidence being in
- 34:47Speaker 1: first place here, Seths. No, it's just the stare, the
- 34:50Speaker 1: mean look going on today. It's just the first thing
- 34:53Speaker 1: to pop in my head. And I know if I
- 34:54Speaker 1: sit here and stew over, I'm gonna be racing and writing.
- 34:58Speaker 1: And Yanni is currently he stewing, hasn't come up with
- 35:01Speaker 1: an answer. Rest of the room looking confident. Here it
- 35:07Speaker 1: is Ganianni. What nonprofit stopped taking critically ill children hunting
- 35:13Speaker 1: in nineteen ninety six due to criticisms from animal rights groups.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Brodie changing his answer, No, I'm just okay, making sure
- 35:25Speaker 1: you don't get me on something. Okay, does everybody have
- 35:28Speaker 1: an answer? Corey m go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 35:34Speaker 1: We have Hayden saying make a wish, Christine saying make
- 35:37Speaker 1: a wish, Brodie saying make a wish, Corey saying big brother,
- 35:42Speaker 1: Big sister saying big brother, Big Sisters, Seth saying make
- 35:49Speaker 1: a wish, Janis saying Shriner's Hospital. The correct answer is
- 35:54Speaker 1: make a wish. The Make a Wish Foundation stopped granting
- 35:59Speaker 1: wishes that it involved hunting, firearms, archery, or anything that
- 36:03Speaker 1: could cause an animal injury. In the nineteen nineties. In
- 36:06Speaker 1: response to this, three new organizations were formed that did
- 36:09Speaker 1: just that. The Hunt of a Lifetime Foundation, Catch a
- 36:12Speaker 1: Dream Foundation, and Life Hunts Foundation. Other wish restrictions include
- 36:17Speaker 1: no vehicles, no homes, and no cash. Phil, we have
- 36:22Speaker 1: one question left. Give us a scoreboard update. Yeah, so
- 36:26Speaker 1: now it's Seth Morris in first place with six but
- 36:30Speaker 1: hot on his trail are Jannis and Brody with five
- 36:33Speaker 1: points apiece. Okay, we need Seth to get it wrong,
- 36:37Speaker 1: Jannis and Brody to get it right to go to
- 36:39Speaker 1: overtime question ten. The topic is woodsmanship. This is an
- 36:44Speaker 1: audio question. Phil is going to play you twenty seconds
- 36:47Speaker 1: of an animal's vocalization. You need to tell me what
- 36:51Speaker 1: animal is making that sound? Take it away, Phil, Ye,
- 37:14Speaker 1: I've heard that before. You have Corey. It's a hint
- 37:20Speaker 1: from Corey. I think he's lived in Montana his whole life.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I grew up in Florida. And Phil, can you play
- 37:31Speaker 1: it one more time? Can you put it on the
- 37:34Speaker 1: headset I just just I feel like I need to
- 37:36Speaker 1: make sure how Seth, if you get this right, you
- 38:02Speaker 1: take the outright victory. How do you feel about your answer? Um?
- 38:07Speaker 1: I feel I don't feel great about it, honestly. Okay, Um, Brody,
- 38:12Speaker 1: Yanni you this right? Just wants Yeah, I'm pulling for you.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Seth me too. If I could go back and make
- 38:19Speaker 1: this waling, I would do it. Brody, how do you
- 38:26Speaker 1: feel about your answer? I feel like if I'm right,
- 38:30Speaker 1: then I'm right. Like I've heard that noise like in
- 38:34Speaker 1: our the last house we lived in Colorado, there is
- 38:38Speaker 1: an animal that made that noise very frequently near our house.
- 38:44Speaker 1: So and I know what that animal was, but I
- 38:47Speaker 1: could be wrong, big hand Nim about your answer? Pretty good, Okay,
- 38:53Speaker 1: I think that I've also heard it from everybody the
- 38:56Speaker 1: house that I lived in what state at one time.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Not gonna say, Christine, yeah, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 39:06Speaker 1: We have Hayden saying bobcat, Christine saying fox, Brodie saying
- 39:11Speaker 1: red fox, Cory sang mountain lion, Chester saying gray fox,
- 39:16Speaker 1: Seth saying bobcat, Jannis saying red fox. Oh, Man, Seth,
- 39:22Speaker 1: I have a correct, correct answer, is mountain lion making
- 39:28Speaker 1: Seth winter because Jannis got it bomb. Cory did get
- 39:34Speaker 1: it right, though, Man, it did sound like a fox. Now,
- 39:38Speaker 1: there's no there's no disputing this. It was on a
- 39:40Speaker 1: trail camera. The mountain lion was standing right there screaming.
- 39:44Speaker 1: That was a female mountain lion who was looking for
- 39:46Speaker 1: a mate. It was captured on a trail camera in
- 39:49Speaker 1: the Angelis National Forest. Twelve days prior, a male mountain
- 39:53Speaker 1: lion visited the area and sprayed urine at the site.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Three days after the female showed up screaming. The same
- 39:59Speaker 1: male and female were spotted on camera together. Oh, Seth
- 40:05Speaker 1: with his second ever Meat Eater Trivia victory. Happens next
- 40:11Speaker 1: is you get to choose where the five hundred dollar
- 40:13Speaker 1: donation from meat Eater goes. So what's it gonna be? Um,
- 40:18Speaker 1: it's a no brainer because I've been thinking about it
- 40:21Speaker 1: basically NonStop since the last time you won. No since
- 40:24Speaker 1: no like the time. It's like the time of year
- 40:27Speaker 1: that's coming. I think now. I think last time you won,
- 40:29Speaker 1: you had a similar mindset and you said that you
- 40:31Speaker 1: were going to donate to n WTFA. Where you're going.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Seth is at his uh he's so sharp coming up
- 40:40Speaker 1: on Turkey season. That's why he wins trivia. I must
- 40:42Speaker 1: have one like a year ago. Hey, don't forget about
- 40:46Speaker 1: those walleye Seth. Oh spring wallet, but gobbles have been
- 40:51Speaker 1: haunting my dreams. Well done, Seth. Now we're gonna throw
- 40:55Speaker 1: it to Hayden here quick before we get out of here.
- 40:56Speaker 1: He has some news to share that's relevant to the
- 40:59Speaker 1: Meat Eater universe. Yeah, man recently a friend of well,
- 41:05Speaker 1: I guess he's a you know, he's a friend of mine,
- 41:08Speaker 1: and he's also a big hunter angler M. Lewis Johnston.
- 41:14Speaker 1: He was injured in the line of duty. Lewis is
- 41:17Speaker 1: a state or as a highway patrol trooper. And yeah,
- 41:22Speaker 1: he was working and really suffered a kind of terrible acts.
- 41:27Speaker 1: And I've been talking to him a little bit and
- 41:29Speaker 1: he's you know, getting back and you know, getting well,
- 41:32Speaker 1: but his family could uh use some support right now.
- 41:35Speaker 1: And you know, I think everybody here in this room
- 41:38Speaker 1: will join me in wishing Lewis well in his road
- 41:42Speaker 1: to recovery. And he listened to meet heat to Trivia.
- 41:44Speaker 1: He does, so, Lewis, we hope you get better soon.
- 41:47Speaker 1: That's it for this episode. Join us next week for
- 41:50Speaker 1: more of Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 41:53Speaker 1: conservation always wins.
