- 0:00Speaker 1: Final segment with Gino Riama here on the Yukon Women's
- 0:02Speaker 1: Basketball Coaches Show. Then one of his junior guards, Ashland Shado,
- 0:06Speaker 1: joined us. She is a big baseball fan, by the way,
- 0:09Speaker 1: big Reds fan. Do you two ever talk baseball at all?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Not much now, but I will maybe because they're out
- 0:23Speaker 2: of Sarry Francona is the manager there. They're going to
- 0:27Speaker 2: become a little bit of a threat to the Phillies
- 0:29Speaker 2: in the National League. So I got to start getting scouting.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Import boy, he's done a great job wherever he goes.
- 0:34Speaker 1: He gets blood out of a stone in some places
- 0:36Speaker 1: where you're not supposed to. This was a big week
- 0:39Speaker 1: for Yukon Athletics as Jason Kanda was introduced as the
- 0:42Speaker 1: new head coach of the football team, and he'll take
- 0:45Speaker 1: over when the bowl game's over in a couple of weeks.
- 0:48Speaker 1: David Benedick, though, mentioned that you as the closer being
- 0:52Speaker 1: uh so to speak, I don't know how much credit
- 0:57Speaker 1: you get, but I know you've got a chance to
- 0:59Speaker 1: meet Jason. What's your thoughts on the new football coach
- 1:02Speaker 1: over from Toledo?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know, uh you know, but what that
- 1:11Speaker 2: means you know.
- 1:13Speaker 1: It means you had a good cover, right.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Wasn't That wasn't exactly Marianna Rivera, you know, going in
- 1:21Speaker 2: there and throwing the last the last half of the
- 1:25Speaker 2: of the inning of the game. Just a really really straightforward,
- 1:33Speaker 2: down the earth, no nonsense kind of guy. I really believe.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And uh the development of players, uh, getting you know,
- 1:48Speaker 2: getting good high school players to come and coaching them up.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And they've always been the other dog outside the league.
- 1:58Speaker 2: You know it be Mississippi State.
- 2:01Speaker 3: They be paid.
- 2:03Speaker 2: So when you have and when you have a coach
- 2:06Speaker 2: that's in a tough league, you know, those schools are
- 2:10Speaker 2: all pretty much evenly balanced, you know, and they all
- 2:14Speaker 2: have terrific coaching.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Uh, and.
- 2:19Speaker 2: They uh, they compete against the power schools and beat them.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So he he knows how to win big games. He
- 2:36Speaker 2: only knows winning They in the bowl game every year
- 2:39Speaker 2: that he's been there. And I I like his you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: I like his demeanor. No, you can tell you that, uh,
- 2:52Speaker 2: he's got a burning deep down inside. I mean it
- 2:56Speaker 2: doesn't show it all the time. Just looks like he's
- 2:59Speaker 2: you know, he's got that competitive fire. So I'm anxious
- 3:04Speaker 2: to see now see how his team responsed to him.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be a lot of fun, that's for sure.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Before we go, we had a couple of minutes left.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Just an update if you would. Caroline de charm and
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yanna Patterson. These are two young ladies that have battled
- 3:20Speaker 1: through a whole lot in their careers, finally healthy, finally
- 3:24Speaker 1: getting a chance to play. What if you liked about
- 3:26Speaker 1: their play so far, the chances that they've had a
- 3:29Speaker 1: chance to go out and compete against other programs, I
- 3:35Speaker 1: think that, you.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Know, obviously, for different reasons, they've they've asked a huge
- 3:42Speaker 2: chunk of their careers. Uh, you know, Carol, and coming
- 3:48Speaker 2: from uh where she was as as a freshman, everybody
- 3:52Speaker 2: kind of remembers the year Page was out, she was
- 3:57Speaker 2: our best player.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Yeah, for for the whole time Pages out and and
- 4:04Speaker 3: then to just have it go away, it's taken.
- 4:08Speaker 2: It's taken obviously a toll, and she's not one hundred
- 4:14Speaker 2: percent the player that she was, But that doesn't mean
- 4:18Speaker 2: that I would hesitate to put her in and any situation,
- 4:26Speaker 2: and I think she'll get it back little by little.
- 4:28Speaker 2: It's different. Practicing getting into a game is a little
- 4:31Speaker 2: bit different. And Yanna has played so little basketball. You know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: she she had her freshman year here and that's it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: So you know what you're always going to get. You know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yanna's going to go in there and work hard, she's
- 4:48Speaker 2: going to hustle, she's going to rebound for you. And
- 4:54Speaker 2: it's finding time for all these guys that you knew
- 4:57Speaker 2: would be an issue going in. But I've been really happy.
- 5:03Speaker 2: You know, they they're great, great teammates, great, great to
- 5:08Speaker 2: be around them and the players, so I'm I'm pretty
- 5:15Speaker 2: comfortable with with how they've how they've played, and and
- 5:19Speaker 2: I I can only hope they just keep getting better.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, we've got about a minute left. When we go
- 5:25Speaker 1: to USC. Normally you try to get an extra team,
- 5:29Speaker 1: an extra game out there because you know you're going
- 5:31Speaker 1: coast to coast, but we're going a day early playing
- 5:34Speaker 1: the game coming back here. Is that just to kind
- 5:37Speaker 1: of get acclimated with the West coast or is there
- 5:39Speaker 1: a little more activity out there, like say on Friday
- 5:42Speaker 1: ahead of the game.
- 5:46Speaker 2: That's normally what we would do on any any trip
- 5:50Speaker 2: of a significant distance. You know, you try to you
- 5:54Speaker 2: try to get out there and and make it a
- 5:59Speaker 2: try it, try to get activated, making a smooth as
- 6:03Speaker 2: possible transition. But uh, there we have a lot of
- 6:10Speaker 2: fans out there. There's a lot of people coming to
- 6:12Speaker 2: the game that are Yukon fans, Yukon grads, Yukon donors.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Uh so we're looking forward to it. We're gonna meet
- 6:21Speaker 2: a lot of people and we're gonna have a great
- 6:25Speaker 2: time while we're out there and hopefully, you know, win
- 6:29Speaker 2: a basketball game.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Indeed, Gino, thank you. We'll see on the plane tomorrow.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Thank you as always my friend.
- 6:35Speaker 2: All right, Bob, thank you.
- 6:36Speaker 1: All right, that's Gino Oriama. Stay tuned. Ashland Shades next
