- 1:35Speaker 2: them wherever you get your podcasts. It's everywhere. Just search
- 1:40Speaker 2: Nashville Movie Dispatch. Today I am talking about and I
- 1:45Speaker 2: kind of went over my thought process on sometimes doing
- 1:48Speaker 2: these little solo vix flicks podcast reviews. There's an exit,
- 1:55Speaker 2: an exit eight that is that I did a couple
- 1:59Speaker 2: months ago. Sometimes I like to do these just to
- 2:02Speaker 2: kind of bring attention to movies that I think we
- 2:04Speaker 2: get lost in the shuffle. Obviously, it's the summer season.
- 2:07Speaker 2: There's huge movies that are coming out between what Supergirl's
- 2:13Speaker 2: coming out, and then obviously you have stuff like The
- 2:15Speaker 2: Minions and the Odyssey and Spider Man. So I'm going
- 2:21Speaker 2: to talk about a new Angelina film called Couture. Fun fact,
- 2:27Speaker 2: this movie made cinema history, becoming the very first fictional
- 2:33Speaker 2: film fictional feature that was permitted to shoot inside Chanelle's
- 2:39Speaker 2: actual Paris showroom. They're tailoring workshops and their oat couture salons,
- 2:45Speaker 2: so they they pretty fancy. They pretty fancy. For those
- 2:51Speaker 2: that do not know what Couture is about. Per Rotten Tomatoes.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Angelina Joe Lee stars as Maxine, an American film maker
- 3:00Speaker 2: who arrives in Paris during the frenzy of fashion week,
- 3:03Speaker 2: drawn into a love story with a familiar collaborator, as
- 3:06Speaker 2: her path intersects with women of different ages and cultural backgrounds,
- 3:10Speaker 2: all fighting to take control of their own destinies. Maxine
- 3:13Speaker 2: finds herself on a deeply personal journey of self discovery
- 3:16Speaker 2: that forces her to confront the choices shaping her life.
- 3:21Speaker 2: This movie will come out on Friday, so again, I
- 3:24Speaker 2: think it'll probably get lost in the shuffle as Supergirl.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And of course the last, best and last I think
- 3:30Speaker 2: is what it's called the Jackass movie. So this one
- 3:34Speaker 2: is for But listen, hey, the good news is this
- 3:36Speaker 2: movie is probably not for those audiences. I don't know
- 3:41Speaker 2: if how old or young all you listeners are, but
- 3:44Speaker 2: you know, back in the day, when Angelina Jolie did
- 3:46Speaker 2: a movie, it was a big deal, top of the
- 3:50Speaker 2: top of the marquee, sometimes the only name on the
- 3:54Speaker 2: movie poster it it was just a big deal. The
- 4:01Speaker 2: Mister and Missus Smith and the tomb Raider movies and
- 4:04Speaker 2: my gosh, Salt but here. Over the years, I know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: her family, her divorce from Brad Pitt, and her humanitarian
- 4:15Speaker 2: work have all been kind of placed as a priority,
- 4:19Speaker 2: more so than obviously being a movie star. So again,
- 4:25Speaker 2: she is. She plays Maxine. She's an indie horror filmmaker
- 4:30Speaker 2: who is making and opening short for Fashion Week and
- 4:34Speaker 2: finds out that she has breast cancer while she's there. Obviously,
- 4:39Speaker 2: this is devastating news to get, so it kind of
- 4:43Speaker 2: has her immediately doing some soul searching. Of course, denial
- 4:48Speaker 2: and stubbornness all kind of come with that as well.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But Jolie herself gives a very raw and nuanced performance
- 4:55Speaker 2: with real vulnerability and considering how intimate this project actually
- 5:00Speaker 2: it came for jolee uh, there's there's really no doubt
- 5:03Speaker 2: that there was a deep connection to this role. This
- 5:07Speaker 2: is an exclusive from People. Angelina. Jolie says the inspiring
- 5:11Speaker 2: message behind new movie Katre resonates with her, and she's
- 5:17Speaker 2: quoted as saying, and just live life. The piece, says,
- 5:21Speaker 2: Katur is a deeply personal one for the Oscar winner
- 5:25Speaker 2: Jolie's own mother, who her name is Marshalne Burn. I'm sorry,
- 5:34Speaker 2: Marshaline Bertrend. She died of ovarian and breast cancer back
- 5:41Speaker 2: in two thousand and seven, and Jolie herself revealed in
- 5:44Speaker 2: twenty thirteen that she had a double mastectomy after testing
- 5:49Speaker 2: positive for the fouls for the faulty BRCA one gene,
- 5:54Speaker 2: which increased her chances of developing breast cancer by eighty
- 5:58Speaker 2: seven percent. Jolie says, it has something to say that
- 6:02Speaker 2: I thought could be useful to people talking about Katur,
- 6:05Speaker 2: showing how everyone is dealing with things that make us
- 6:08Speaker 2: very human, and that if we can figure out how
- 6:10Speaker 2: to live through challenges by leaning on each other and
- 6:13Speaker 2: having more empathy towards one another, the better and less
- 6:15Speaker 2: alone will be. She goes on to talk about the
- 6:19Speaker 2: director and filmmaker Alice I'm gonna get it. Her name
- 6:27Speaker 2: is Elise Vinacore. She says, Elise is a wonderful director
- 6:35Speaker 2: and approaches the stories of the women in Katur with
- 6:37Speaker 2: sensitivity and hope. The film is not about an end
- 6:40Speaker 2: for my character, but rather about a renewed desire to
- 6:43Speaker 2: live life until your last breath, which particularly resonates with
- 6:47Speaker 2: me at this time in my life. So again, writer
- 6:53Speaker 2: director Atlas Vinacore. The title of her film actually has
- 7:03Speaker 2: several meetings, all of which she attempts to present with
- 7:06Speaker 2: emotion and understanding and purpose. There is the French title
- 7:13Speaker 2: of this is just Catures, which actually in French in
- 7:17Speaker 2: englishmen's stitches. There's obviously the stitches of that are part
- 7:22Speaker 2: of the dresses or the garments in high fashion. There's
- 7:27Speaker 2: also the physical element of what stitches can be as
- 7:32Speaker 2: far as what involving you know, scars or injuries or wounds.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And then I think there's this real connection of kind
- 7:40Speaker 2: of the sewing of all of these women's lives together
- 7:46Speaker 2: and kind of sharing in what they endure, which is
- 7:49Speaker 2: the fragility and susceptibility and the resilience and their strength. However,
- 7:56Speaker 2: Vincore's script is unable to get the audience where we
- 7:59Speaker 2: need to be. There is something that's equally elegant and
- 8:03Speaker 2: gracious in her storytelling, yet there's also a real lack
- 8:06Speaker 2: of focus, as we the viewers can't really emotionally connect
- 8:13Speaker 2: to any of the characters and their circumstances due to
- 8:17Speaker 2: us never really spending enough, like appropriate time with them.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Some of the other ladies we meet is Christine Christine.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Christine is played by I'm Gonna Get this one Goranz Marie.
- 8:44Speaker 2: She is as Christine. She's stitching her first dress. It
- 8:49Speaker 2: is her very own, it has her name on it,
- 8:52Speaker 2: and what comes with that is the exhaustion and the
- 8:56Speaker 2: stress and the pressure. There is also Angel Angeline in
- 9:03Speaker 2: jail is played by Ella Rumph. She is an overworked
- 9:06Speaker 2: and underpaid or sometimes not paid at all, makeup artist
- 9:10Speaker 2: and aspiring writer. There's also Ada. So Ada is played
- 9:16Speaker 2: by Her name is unveer Une and she is a Kenyan.
- 9:26Speaker 2: She plays a Kenyan immigrant that's a brand new to
- 9:28Speaker 2: the modeling world. She's left her brother behind, while also
- 9:32Speaker 2: lying to her father back home that she is in
- 9:34Speaker 2: some kind of exchange program for pharmacy school. So these
- 9:39Speaker 2: ladies clearly come from all different walks of life, and
- 9:43Speaker 2: each of their journeys have brought them here. So while
- 9:46Speaker 2: we may know where they came from or who they
- 9:49Speaker 2: even want to become, and can clearly see the suffering
- 9:53Speaker 2: and sacrifice that comes from their passion for such a
- 9:57Speaker 2: superficial and cruel industry, but we never truly know who
- 10:02Speaker 2: they are, and this unfortunately leaves Katur oftentimes feeling shallow
- 10:08Speaker 2: and ultimately becoming ineffective in its portrayal of tenacity, mortality,
- 10:14Speaker 2: and solidarity. Now the exception is Jolie. Now vinccore makes
- 10:23Speaker 2: her most compelling proclamation with her as Maxine. In a
- 10:30Speaker 2: review for Screen International, Robert Daniels wrote, Jolie seems to
- 10:36Speaker 2: bend the picture around her, and honestly, once you see this,
- 10:41Speaker 2: you'll know exactly what he means, and she does indeed,
- 10:44Speaker 2: and it is why she is simply sublime in this
- 10:51Speaker 2: I think a tour is worth seeking out, if anything,
- 10:55Speaker 2: just for Jolie. We haven't really seen a whole lot
- 10:58Speaker 2: from her lately. I think she's I think she's starting
- 11:02Speaker 2: to pop up more and more. I know that she
- 11:04Speaker 2: was just in that Netflix Maria who many thought that
- 11:07Speaker 2: she could possibly get Oscar nominated for that About the
- 11:10Speaker 2: Opera singer, but she did not. And I don't think
- 11:14Speaker 2: Jolie's performance here will necessarily, you know, start any kind
- 11:19Speaker 2: of award buzz. But if it does, I think I
- 11:21Speaker 2: would under I think I would under understand where that's
- 11:24Speaker 2: coming from, because, like I said, she is simply sublime,
- 11:30Speaker 2: and as Robert Daniels wrote, she really is. She bends
- 11:35Speaker 2: the picture around her. So I'm giving Cotur two and
- 11:40Speaker 2: a half out of five stars, and again comes out
- 11:43Speaker 2: this Friday if you want to go out and see it.
- 11:48Speaker 2: And as far as the rest of our work, again,
