- 0:23Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Mariah and I'm Tamara, and welcome to Born
- 0:27Speaker 1: to the Game podcast. Today we have a special guest
- 0:30Speaker 1: in the house with us.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And it's our season open, Episode one, Episode one.
- 0:38Speaker 1: How are we feeling? I'm excited, excited.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Everybody's always excited for kickoff?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Right, Oh yeah, you heard the patient, you know, for
- 0:47Speaker 2: the football terminology kickoff.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I don't know if y'all y'all pet.
- 0:51Speaker 2: That I'm excited. Everybody do a little anxious. I'm like,
- 0:56Speaker 2: you know, it's it's all good.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I mean, there's always some butterflies before game, I would.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Think, right, yeah, So we just say a prayer and
- 1:03Speaker 3: keep it moving, and keep it moving.
- 1:05Speaker 1: We are.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So we're going to introduce our first guest, the daughter
- 1:09Speaker 2: of William Floyd. I got to read his accolades because
- 1:12Speaker 2: there's so many. He was a college champion, super Bowl champion,
- 1:17Speaker 2: ACC Hall of Famer, Florida State Hall of Famer, and
- 1:22Speaker 2: All Madden Team. Ty Floyd is in the building.
- 1:31Speaker 1: He was getting busy, cool or whatever.
- 1:36Speaker 3: He did he did. So we have some questions you
- 1:40Speaker 3: want to ask you, which want to, you know, get
- 1:43Speaker 3: to know you a little bit better. I'm excited. Is
- 1:45Speaker 3: that Okay, Yeah, that's that's good.
- 1:47Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:48Speaker 3: So we talked to you the other day, to me
- 1:50Speaker 3: and I, and we asked you to describe what.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Being born to the game was to you in three words,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and you told us God's invisible strength things. Can you
- 2:01Speaker 2: just talk to us a little bit why you chose
- 2:04Speaker 2: those three words, like what that means for you.
- 2:07Speaker 4: The reason why I chose those three words is that,
- 2:10Speaker 4: you know, kind of as believers, we know that our
- 2:13Speaker 4: life plans were made for us before we stepped on
- 2:16Speaker 4: this planet. God's purpose for me was to utilize my
- 2:20Speaker 4: voice to uplift others, to use the experiences that he
- 2:24Speaker 4: gave me, to use the gifts and talents that he
- 2:27Speaker 4: gave me to ultimately, you know, connect people's voices to
- 2:30Speaker 4: good on a huge scale in athletics. And had my
- 2:34Speaker 4: dad not done all the things that he'd done, or
- 2:37Speaker 4: you know, accomplished all of the accolades that he'd accomplished
- 2:40Speaker 4: and then been so intentional in taking me with him,
- 2:44Speaker 4: or you know, just kind of putting me up on
- 2:46Speaker 4: game when I finally realized this is what I wanted
- 2:48Speaker 4: to do, then my career wouldn't be the same. So
- 2:51Speaker 4: God definitely was very intentional on making sure that you know,
- 2:57Speaker 4: he used those strings. He wove those strings in as
- 2:59Speaker 4: my god. Mom Darby would say, God winks.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oh, God winks. I love that. Can you explain that
- 3:08Speaker 1: a little bit? Like, yeah, God winks.
- 3:10Speaker 3: God winks.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Is like when you have that moment of realization of
- 3:14Speaker 4: what his plan is or what his purpose is for
- 3:18Speaker 4: your life and you kind of look up at the
- 3:19Speaker 4: sky like all right, og, I like that, he looks
- 3:24Speaker 4: down at you and he's like, m So, God wins.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It's a purpose thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, So talk
- 3:31Speaker 1: to us a little bit about your life early, like
- 3:33Speaker 1: you have this this great granddad that has a great game,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and he's he's making a mark on the world and
- 3:43Speaker 1: you are his kid, So what is that like? Growing up?
- 3:46Speaker 4: I didn't really understand the magnitude of who he was
- 3:49Speaker 4: and what his contributions to the game were until we
- 3:52Speaker 4: went to like Tallahassee, to the Florida State games, and
- 3:56Speaker 4: you would see how much people loved him, like he
- 3:59Speaker 4: was somebody's face for something.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And people would come up to me and be like,
- 4:02Speaker 3: you know, in Florida, the more the more north you go,
- 4:06Speaker 3: the more south you get, so people would come up
- 4:08Speaker 3: to me and be like, baby, how does it feel
- 4:10Speaker 3: that your dad your daddy is you know, he's so great.
- 4:14Speaker 3: And I remember back when you know, he was your age.
- 4:20Speaker 3: That is very real, back when he was your age
- 4:22Speaker 3: and you know, your little your older brother was running
- 4:25Speaker 3: around and you know, how does it feel?
- 4:27Speaker 2: And I'm like, you know, and you know they take
- 4:32Speaker 2: sports seriously. Oh in Florida, Florida State.
- 4:35Speaker 1: He's a big deal.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so it was. It's kind of crazy.
- 4:38Speaker 4: But as I continue to grow up and especially being
- 4:41Speaker 4: in this career, I mean, what he has done and
- 4:44Speaker 4: accomplished is amazing. My dad is the last fullback to
- 4:47Speaker 4: get drafted into the first round and that was like
- 4:51Speaker 4: thirty years ago.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Wow. What year did he get drafted?
- 4:53Speaker 3: In? Nineteen ninety five? I'm dad, I'm sorry if I
- 4:58Speaker 3: messed that up, right, nineteen nineteen ninety four or five?
- 5:02Speaker 1: Okay, ninety four or five?
- 5:05Speaker 3: I think ninety four because he won the Super Bowl
- 5:07Speaker 3: in ninety five.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Okay wow yeah, wow, So like thirty years so you
- 5:13Speaker 2: traveled with him every team? So how many teams did
- 5:17Speaker 2: he play for? Did you travel with him? How was
- 5:19Speaker 2: that experience?
- 5:19Speaker 1: Like? Moving?
- 5:20Speaker 4: Well, I was born in California and Colorato. I stayed
- 5:25Speaker 4: there for about a year and then we moved to Charlotte,
- 5:27Speaker 4: North Carolina. So that's where like my little kid memories are,
- 5:30Speaker 4: you know, starting school. I do remember Charlotte, and then
- 5:34Speaker 4: after he retired, we moved to Florida. And basically the
- 5:40Speaker 4: bulk of my experience of being like an athlete kid
- 5:45Speaker 4: comes from right born to the game is more so
- 5:50Speaker 4: with his job at Florida State University as a color
- 5:53Speaker 4: commentator working alongside the team, and then the booster stuff
- 5:57Speaker 4: that he's done or the stuff that he's done within
- 6:01Speaker 4: his former teams.
- 6:02Speaker 3: So yeah, that's where I kind of started to see things.
- 6:07Speaker 2: For like, you got to experience I guess you you
- 6:11Speaker 2: I don't know how to say it, but you felt
- 6:13Speaker 2: the impact.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Yeah, more after he left the NFL. Yeah, my older
- 6:20Speaker 4: brother Drew would probably be able to speak more to
- 6:24Speaker 4: what it was like the moving and all of that.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, but the transition, but the transition is still yeah,
- 6:30Speaker 1: it's still the significant yeah oh yeah, yeah definitely. So
- 6:33Speaker 1: how did all the moving impact you? You have all
- 6:36Speaker 1: these different places you have to get to know, So
- 6:39Speaker 1: how did that impact your expriends?
- 6:44Speaker 4: One of my god given abilities. I don't know how
- 6:46Speaker 4: to meet a stranger. And I knew that very early on,
- 6:50Speaker 4: so it didn't really affect me or bother me.
- 6:52Speaker 3: But I would say that.
- 6:55Speaker 4: When people ask me where I'm from, my mind always
- 6:57Speaker 4: wants to stay North Carolina.
- 6:59Speaker 3: That's where I remember, you know, going to school, starting school.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I have friends there.
- 7:04Speaker 4: Those are like my early childhood memories that I remember vividly.
- 7:08Speaker 4: But because I've lived in Florida for so long, went
- 7:10Speaker 4: to school in Florida, I would say Florida. But I
- 7:12Speaker 4: think that that's kind of why I want to relocate
- 7:16Speaker 4: back to Charlotte, because it does feel like home to me.
- 7:19Speaker 4: So when I finish my masters, that's where I'm going.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Okay from my lips, let's just park it right you
- 7:26Speaker 1: you throughout the word masters, tell us more, tell us
- 7:29Speaker 1: more about that. What are you studying.
- 7:31Speaker 4: I'm studying communications at Alabama A and M University almost
- 7:35Speaker 4: two time HBC.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You graduate.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I'm very very proud of that, very very proud to
- 7:40Speaker 4: matriculate at the same place as my people who opened
- 7:44Speaker 4: these institutions because you know.
- 7:48Speaker 3: We couldn't go to other schools.
- 7:49Speaker 4: But I just ingest because of my career, I've got
- 7:53Speaker 4: to meet so many amazing people. HBCUs is where I
- 7:55Speaker 4: got my start. You know, it meant a lot to
- 7:56Speaker 4: me to cover these guys, especially since you know, nobody's
- 8:00Speaker 4: beating down the door. Unfortunately now things have changed, but
- 8:03Speaker 4: back then a lot of people weren't beating down the
- 8:04Speaker 4: door to provide coverage for HBCU athletes. So that's where
- 8:09Speaker 4: I drove my lane, got my shot, and it's I
- 8:16Speaker 4: met so many great people. So one of the people
- 8:19Speaker 4: that I met is Jason Maye. He's the director of
- 8:20Speaker 4: football operations at Alabama A and M. And I said
- 8:24Speaker 4: something in Jess like, yeah, coach, if you want to
- 8:26Speaker 4: add a woman to your staff, diversify the staff, you know,
- 8:32Speaker 4: let your girl.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Create a table for yourself. I love it.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I don't know why.
- 8:35Speaker 4: I was so surprised when he called me two weeks
- 8:37Speaker 4: later and he was like, well, so, yeah, I talked
- 8:39Speaker 4: to the ad and he said, yeah, school stipend room
- 8:42Speaker 4: aboard and I said wow. I said, okay, let me
- 8:45Speaker 4: think about it. And I thought about it for like
- 8:46Speaker 4: five months.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You were like, let me let me Actually.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I thought about it for five months and at the time,
- 8:55Speaker 4: you know, in Orlando. I'm working two part time jobs,
- 8:58Speaker 4: like waking up at three to get to work at four,
- 9:01Speaker 4: clocking out at twelve, taking a break driving my other job.
- 9:06Speaker 4: And I I remember one day, I don't know why,
- 9:08Speaker 4: I was just so aggravated and I was like God, like,
- 9:11Speaker 4: please please allow me to do this and be in
- 9:14Speaker 4: my career and get out of here.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I'm ready.
- 9:17Speaker 3: And God was like, girl out and gave you an opportunity.
- 9:20Speaker 3: And you said you want to sit.
- 9:24Speaker 4: And that's when it clicked for me, like, oh, this
- 9:26Speaker 4: was it, This was this was God winking, this was guys,
- 9:29Speaker 4: this is guy's. That's how I ended up at Alabama and.
- 9:33Speaker 2: M okay, So, which you say that your dad influenced
- 9:37Speaker 2: your career and what you want to do with your life.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, because you're doing all this hustle's and when
- 9:44Speaker 1: you talked about get up early in the morning and
- 9:45Speaker 1: doing all this, it sounds like, I mean you do
- 9:47Speaker 1: a lot. So does that work at the company of
- 9:49Speaker 1: your dad? Oh?
- 9:50Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 9:51Speaker 4: He has given me what he calls the head bust
- 9:53Speaker 4: of mentality, and that for a running back, you know,
- 9:56Speaker 4: for them, and they hiked the ball the offense of line.
- 10:00Speaker 4: They create gaps so that they can just and you
- 10:03Speaker 4: you know, sometimes.
- 10:07Speaker 3: That gap.
- 10:08Speaker 4: And so that's the mentality that I have embodied, just
- 10:11Speaker 4: for me and just for my whole life, is just
- 10:14Speaker 4: to have that mentality.
- 10:16Speaker 3: And then when people talk about my dadd you know again,
- 10:18Speaker 3: oh my god, I remember your daddy. I mean, he
- 10:21Speaker 3: was just one of those hard Florida He was one
- 10:25Speaker 3: of those hard guys. I mean, you know, hey would
- 10:29Speaker 3: knock himself out trying to get him.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Himself out.
- 10:33Speaker 3: So that's like the.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Mentality, the mentality that I have. But I remember, you know,
- 10:39Speaker 4: my dad, he did a show called The Gridiron Greats
- 10:41Speaker 4: and it was a guy from UF guy which guy
- 10:44Speaker 4: from you I don't even remember, Okay, okay, okay, I
- 10:48Speaker 4: know that it was a guy from the University of Florida,
- 10:50Speaker 4: a guy from the University of Miami, my dad, who
- 10:52Speaker 4: was the Florida State guy. And then Mike k was
- 10:54Speaker 4: a journalist in Orlando. And it would be at Universal Studio.
- 10:57Speaker 4: So I literally go with my dad to the studio
- 10:59Speaker 4: and watch him get his makeup done and watch him
- 11:02Speaker 4: talk sports. And you ever listened to my dad on
- 11:04Speaker 4: a broadcast. He's such a firecracker. Yeah, So He's very
- 11:09Speaker 4: passionate about it, and so it was always so cool
- 11:11Speaker 4: to me. And growing up, I was an athlete, so
- 11:14Speaker 4: I was basketball. If I could go back and do
- 11:17Speaker 4: it all again, I would have played like soccer, something, volleyball, volleyball, play.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Something, you know. I just I was not a good
- 11:25Speaker 3: basketball It's okay.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I wasn't.
- 11:27Speaker 4: I'll be honest, Like, I'm five foot ten. When you
- 11:30Speaker 4: go and you look at these girls that are playing
- 11:32Speaker 4: now like.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Six foot eight seven, like six ft eight.
- 11:37Speaker 1: They're tall.
- 11:37Speaker 3: So I was literally a five foot nine center.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Come on now, I was playing against like this girl
- 11:43Speaker 4: named Iana McKenzie.
- 11:44Speaker 1: She ended up.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Girl went to Texas Tech.
- 11:49Speaker 4: And I remember like one time she came down with
- 11:51Speaker 4: a rebun and got me run the trust.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I was like, never again. I couldn't even.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I was like, man, I'm over this.
- 11:57Speaker 4: But I was deciding on whether I wanted to do medicine, okay,
- 12:00Speaker 4: sports medicine, and at the time, I was like super
- 12:02Speaker 4: intrigued by like all of the Harvard Studies chronic trauma
- 12:06Speaker 4: into fallab like the movie with had just came out,
- 12:09Speaker 4: and I was like, man, I'm trying to decide. But
- 12:13Speaker 4: I just was like no, I think journalism is my lane.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I like it, like, let me go in here and
- 12:16Speaker 1: get this pin out.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Like journalism.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Yeah, and shout out to my TV production teacher in
- 12:24Speaker 4: high school, Timothy Blazic. I mean he really believed in me,
- 12:26Speaker 4: Like after hours, he would go to the different sporting
- 12:29Speaker 4: events and games so he could be my camera guy
- 12:31Speaker 4: and teach me kind of like what he knew about
- 12:34Speaker 4: the business.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Okay, and yeah, pick up.
- 12:36Speaker 1: To teachers that really you know again for us, Yeah,
- 12:40Speaker 1: I don't think they really realized how big of an
- 12:42Speaker 1: impact they have on kids. But yeah, if you got
- 12:45Speaker 1: a good teacher that believes you, it's like it's everything.
- 12:48Speaker 4: He's whenever I win my first Emmy award, he's going,
- 12:53Speaker 4: he's going with me. It's coming coming, it is, it's coming.
- 12:57Speaker 5: Is.
- 12:58Speaker 4: He's got to see that. And we'll put him in
- 13:00Speaker 4: like an ox blood suit.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Okay, I'll have money back then, like well like.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Bigger money, bigger money, okay, okay, bigger money. So we
- 13:09Speaker 1: can tell that you're the apple of your dad's I
- 13:10Speaker 1: can tell you, guys are close just just from here,
- 13:12Speaker 1: and you speak and the passion and your eyes light up,
- 13:15Speaker 1: we know that you are you guys are close. What
- 13:17Speaker 1: about the challenges, like, what were some of the challenges
- 13:19Speaker 1: that you had just just going through growing up as
- 13:24Speaker 1: a teenager, as a young adult in the life.
- 13:28Speaker 4: I would say, you know, just how busy they are,
- 13:31Speaker 4: and it doesn't stop at retirement, which I think a
- 13:33Speaker 4: lot of people, a lot of people don't understand that
- 13:35Speaker 4: it really doesn't stop at retirement. I mean, he is
- 13:38Speaker 4: like just on go quite frequently, and even to this day,
- 13:42Speaker 4: like we have to compare, we have to compare schedules
- 13:46Speaker 4: to see like when we can you know, visit each
- 13:49Speaker 4: other or you know, just what one another is doing.
- 13:53Speaker 4: But I would say that is just the biggest challenge.
- 13:55Speaker 4: And then also, you know, when you're an athlete and
- 13:57Speaker 4: you play a sport, and more specifically football, age a
- 14:01Speaker 4: little bit faster than most with age. So you know,
- 14:05Speaker 4: he's only like fifty, But.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Dad looks good.
- 14:09Speaker 2: So we're gonna we're gonna say that, mister Floyd, you
- 14:12Speaker 2: still look good.
- 14:13Speaker 1: She's not. She's not saying.
- 14:14Speaker 4: No, no, I promise no. And I literally I tell
- 14:18Speaker 4: him because he does. He's a very handsome guy, and
- 14:22Speaker 4: he he got this like swagger to him. It's kind
- 14:25Speaker 4: of crazy, like you know some kids, like some parents
- 14:28Speaker 4: would have to ask.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Their kids, you know, just kind of what's trending, you
- 14:32Speaker 3: know whatever. No, like he he.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Pulled out we were going somewhere, and he pulled out
- 14:37Speaker 4: a pair of I believe I'm not a snigger head now,
- 14:39Speaker 4: but I think there are concords Jordan's.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I said, like, what do you like? What you know
- 14:44Speaker 1: about this?
- 14:45Speaker 3: He said, oh, baby, girl, you know, I just keep
- 14:46Speaker 3: him in the class. I got a lot of stuff,
- 14:48Speaker 3: got super Bowl Sea literally like it's kind of crazy.
- 14:52Speaker 4: And then like, I'll post him on my story and
- 14:55Speaker 4: I'm guaranteed at least one or two.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Oh girl, your daddy. Look, say my mom will fight.
- 15:01Speaker 4: But she will though, But my mother is from Polk
- 15:04Speaker 4: count Flora is in between Orlando and Tampa.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I don't exactly.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Ain't nothing to do down there but get in trouble.
- 15:11Speaker 4: I said, Mom, what did you do for fun back
- 15:12Speaker 4: in the day? She said, we would just you know,
- 15:14Speaker 4: get the boom box and park in the parking lot
- 15:16Speaker 4: of the dairy queens.
- 15:18Speaker 1: She got time simpler times.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Actually, I wash stuff like that, parking the parking lot
- 15:26Speaker 3: of the day queen and all that, And yeah, she
- 15:30Speaker 3: don't play her. She don't. She don't play them games.
- 15:33Speaker 3: I wouldn't test her.
- 15:36Speaker 1: You're watching, don't test Miss Floyd.
- 15:38Speaker 4: But yeah, those those I would say are are some
- 15:41Speaker 4: of the challenges. But now that I'm kind of in it,
- 15:44Speaker 4: I see it from a different perspective, and now I'm like, Okay,
- 15:48Speaker 4: I completely get it. Because there are times where I
- 15:50Speaker 4: feel like so bad.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Why if, like.
- 15:57Speaker 4: I don't call a friend for their birthday, I have
- 16:00Speaker 4: by texting because I'm so tired, or like I have
- 16:03Speaker 4: all of these things to do, and people invite me.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Somewhere and I'm like, I don't want to go.
- 16:07Speaker 4: I want to sleep right now, yea, and vibe out
- 16:10Speaker 4: in the house because I know tomorrow I'm going to
- 16:12Speaker 4: have to be around a lot of people are don't
- 16:13Speaker 4: want to go outside?
- 16:14Speaker 3: Is that what I want to do?
- 16:16Speaker 4: And you know, more oftentimes than not, I'm just taking
- 16:18Speaker 4: my time to chill and relax. And so I understand
- 16:22Speaker 4: why my dad did that. You know now, Back then
- 16:26Speaker 4: I was.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Like, you never want to do nothing, But now I
- 16:29Speaker 3: get it.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I definitely get it. They are tickling me. So
- 16:40Speaker 1: you have this budding career as a journalist, and we've
- 16:44Speaker 1: heard about challenges, and we've heard about just you growing up.
- 16:50Speaker 1: What about like where you're going, where your career is going,
- 16:53Speaker 1: and how you're using the challenges to fuel yourself forward
- 16:56Speaker 1: and what you're doing. I mean, you have a what
- 16:59Speaker 1: I want to call it wedding career. I mean you are,
- 17:01Speaker 1: you are established. So I want to talk more about
- 17:03Speaker 1: that and who in the industry influenced you. Oh wow, because.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I know, like you being a woman, a woman of
- 17:10Speaker 3: color in the space space.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not it's not easy. It's not easy.
- 17:15Speaker 2: So tell us what that experience is like, and anyone
- 17:18Speaker 2: who wants to follow your footsteps in this off rip.
- 17:22Speaker 4: When I was a freshman, incoming freshmen, they were doing
- 17:27Speaker 4: an unveiling at a Florida A and M the Pam
- 17:30Speaker 4: Oliver like Hall where our studios for our campus new
- 17:37Speaker 4: TV news station was going to be shot every week.
- 17:41Speaker 4: And she came and they allowed me to go and
- 17:44Speaker 4: listen to her speak, and I just got so many
- 17:48Speaker 4: gems from her and got to really just understand everything
- 17:53Speaker 4: that she went through and how she didn't even start
- 17:56Speaker 4: in sports journalism. Now we know her to be the
- 17:59Speaker 4: best year I was tenured, right, but she was doing
- 18:02Speaker 4: an agriculture beat when she came out of Florida A
- 18:05Speaker 4: and M, because the A is agricultural mechanical. So they
- 18:08Speaker 4: just thought like, oh, like you know that and having
- 18:14Speaker 4: to start, you know, in smaller town Georgia, and just
- 18:16Speaker 4: how she ascended and how she is able to kind
- 18:19Speaker 4: of take the brunt end of all of those, you know,
- 18:23Speaker 4: just the things that people saying. So when you talk
- 18:25Speaker 4: about challenges that I'm trying to navigate, I often think
- 18:28Speaker 4: back to me watching her and her giving us that talk.
- 18:33Speaker 4: And somebody asked her, you know, they said, they talk
- 18:35Speaker 4: about you and they say this, and they say that
- 18:36Speaker 4: she's had the people.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Don't pay my bills. And I was like, you know what,
- 18:41Speaker 3: I like that.
- 18:41Speaker 1: I like that a lot.
- 18:42Speaker 4: And she was like, you have to develop thick skin
- 18:44Speaker 4: and have an overwhelming like love and sense of stelf
- 18:46Speaker 4: because this career will eat your throat, it will eat
- 18:49Speaker 4: you up.
- 18:50Speaker 3: And so I often remember that.
- 18:51Speaker 4: And then when I was an athlete in high school,
- 18:54Speaker 4: I must have been I must have been kind of
- 18:55Speaker 4: nice because like I interviewed by that because I got
- 19:00Speaker 4: Tiffany Green, who is the first black woman to call
- 19:03Speaker 4: college football.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Games play by play on it as wow.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Okay.
- 19:06Speaker 4: So her mentorship and her guidance has helped me and
- 19:09Speaker 4: now I'm trying to go into the realm of play
- 19:11Speaker 4: by play, So it's their mentorship has meant the world
- 19:16Speaker 4: to me. And then Laura Oakman, she has an organization
- 19:20Speaker 4: of women in sports in which I'm a part of,
- 19:21Speaker 4: and that has really opened up the door and everything for.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Me and what I'm doing now.
- 19:26Speaker 4: But right now I'm doing good. I'm doing really, really good.
- 19:31Speaker 4: I kind of going into this year, I told myself
- 19:35Speaker 4: that this stage of life that I'm in, in this
- 19:38Speaker 4: era that I'm in and being in Alabama and having
- 19:40Speaker 4: the full capacity to be able to focus on myself,
- 19:43Speaker 4: I have to really do the things that I need
- 19:45Speaker 4: to do to get myself to the next level. And
- 19:48Speaker 4: that's not just in journalism and getting reps in experience.
- 19:52Speaker 4: It's more so about making sure that my attitude is good,
- 19:56Speaker 4: that I stay in good heart posture when things do
- 19:58Speaker 4: or don't go by way, that I get better with
- 20:01Speaker 4: my finances.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Come on, finance said finances, good for you.
- 20:07Speaker 4: I just met with the financial advisor and these are
- 20:10Speaker 4: things that honestly, I was going to say someone.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Your age talking about the financial literacy I think is
- 20:15Speaker 2: very important, so good for you just.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Leave generational well creating that. Yeah, just being more knowledgeable
- 20:22Speaker 1: about it.
- 20:22Speaker 4: I think when I hopped on the zoom with her,
- 20:25Speaker 4: she said, I don't get many twenty seven years. She said,
- 20:28Speaker 4: I get one or two of you a year, and
- 20:29Speaker 4: right now you're my second this year.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Wow, Like we don't get many of those.
- 20:34Speaker 4: But working on my mental health as well my physical
- 20:37Speaker 4: health because being on the road a lot, not eating property,
- 20:41Speaker 4: all of those things start to add up in a
- 20:44Speaker 4: certain kind of way. So right now it's just me
- 20:47Speaker 4: planning and doing all of those things. But I did
- 20:50Speaker 4: a tournament at play by Play last month. It was like, really,
- 20:53Speaker 4: my first time doing play Where were you? Baltimore, Maryland,
- 20:56Speaker 4: ciaa basketball tournament?
- 20:58Speaker 3: Okay, I must have kicked some some but some booty some.
- 21:02Speaker 1: But don't keep we won't give.
- 21:04Speaker 3: But I must have kicked some butt because now.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Tomorrow I'll fly out to San Antonio to do the
- 21:12Speaker 4: first ever HBCU Women's All Smart Game.
- 21:18Speaker 3: I'll do the first one.
- 21:20Speaker 4: And then you know they're their agents that are like, hey,
- 21:24Speaker 4: you know, we would love to talk to you.
- 21:26Speaker 3: We heard you the next girl.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and oh and we had her here on born
- 21:31Speaker 1: to the game. You see, that's right. Yeah.
- 21:36Speaker 4: So now it's just kind of like somebody told me
- 21:39Speaker 4: back when I was stressing about where my life is
- 21:42Speaker 4: going to go or what was going to happen, that you.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Know, it happens gradually and all of a sudden.
- 21:46Speaker 4: She was like, look back at your life and like,
- 21:48Speaker 4: look at the things that you have been able to
- 21:49Speaker 4: accomplish within the past few years. And then next year,
- 21:52Speaker 4: each year you're doing things that you're doing new things.
- 21:55Speaker 4: So it happens gradually and then it happens boom, all
- 21:58Speaker 4: of a sudden.
- 21:58Speaker 3: So yeah, that's what I'm That's what I'm doing.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Isn't that what it is? We put out prayers, we pray,
- 22:03Speaker 1: we pray, we pray, and then we don't say anything,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, you look up and
- 22:06Speaker 1: you're like, oh, it's I'm here. It's actually happened.
- 22:12Speaker 2: But I love how you talk about it being a
- 22:14Speaker 2: gradual progression and this isn't something that just happens overnight,
- 22:20Speaker 2: because a lot of people I think would, I mean,
- 22:22Speaker 2: I'm that person.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I'm impatient. You know, I work with your daddy's daughter.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I work.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I started doing sit ups on Monday and expect a
- 22:29Speaker 2: six fact by where are they these abs?
- 22:32Speaker 1: Where are gradual process? It is?
- 22:35Speaker 3: And especially because I took the road, let's travel a
- 22:38Speaker 3: lot of people.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Like when you're in journalism school, typically they train you
- 22:43Speaker 4: to get your mind right so that when you graduate,
- 22:45Speaker 4: you're going to a small market, okay, And that can
- 22:48Speaker 4: be anywhere from like San Angelo, Texas to like Huntsville, Alabama,
- 22:54Speaker 4: where I am. It's a bigger market. There's a lot
- 22:56Speaker 4: of great sports there, but it's still in the one hundreds.
- 22:58Speaker 4: And then when you say the one hundreds, what does
- 23:00Speaker 4: that mean? There's like the markets they're range from like
- 23:04Speaker 4: your higher markets, what would be like your New York's,
- 23:07Speaker 4: your LA's, your Orlando's, stuff like that, and like Raleigh
- 23:11Speaker 4: that's like a top twenty market. Just to give you
- 23:14Speaker 4: like an ig Atlanta would be a high market.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Then you go you know, lower.
- 23:19Speaker 4: And lower to your smaller, smaller. Yeah, so that's how
- 23:23Speaker 4: it works. The money in local news is sometimes it
- 23:28Speaker 4: just it just depends on where you are, what company
- 23:30Speaker 4: you work for. And I can't really speak to it
- 23:32Speaker 4: because I didn't go that route. I have a lot
- 23:36Speaker 4: of friends that did. But for me, it was just freelance,
- 23:40Speaker 4: got out of got out of school, and COVID hit.
- 23:43Speaker 4: So that was largely part of the reason why I
- 23:45Speaker 4: started to freelance. But that's that's how my journey has gone.
- 23:51Speaker 4: There are people that I look at my resume and
- 23:52Speaker 4: be like, oh, you don't have enough experience because you
- 23:54Speaker 4: didn't go local news. There'll be some people that be like, oh,
- 23:56Speaker 4: you do have a lot of experience, but you.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Know, you didn't get the local news training or pay
- 24:00Speaker 3: your due.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So you're like, but but I got training other ways.
- 24:03Speaker 1: And I hate that because it's like everybody's journey is
- 24:06Speaker 1: not the same. Yeah, don't compare mine to whatever you're
- 24:08Speaker 1: used to exactly. Yeah. That bugs me. So you just
- 24:11Speaker 1: have to prove them all wrong.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Right, So that's what I mean. Let's travel right right?
- 24:16Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 24:16Speaker 3: So, so what advice does your dad give you? Oh, man,
- 24:21Speaker 3: this journey that you're on, because I know, I know
- 24:24Speaker 3: he has a lot of wisdom like yourself.
- 24:26Speaker 1: The wise.
- 24:27Speaker 4: My dad has been very intentional on just making sure
- 24:30Speaker 4: that I know how to conduct myself in the workplace.
- 24:32Speaker 4: That's the biggest thing because he's been around a lot
- 24:34Speaker 4: and he's seen a lot, and not only him, but
- 24:37Speaker 4: my mother have said, the easiest thing to get but
- 24:40Speaker 4: the hardest thing to get rid of is the reputation.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Not that they got to.
- 24:44Speaker 4: Worry about me going out and doing all doing things
- 24:46Speaker 4: all Wally Kney, because I don't get down like that,
- 24:49Speaker 4: but it's just the fact that the littlest things can
- 24:52Speaker 4: be misconstrueding.
- 24:53Speaker 3: You always want to make sure you conduct yourself proper.
- 24:55Speaker 4: Then another thing that he wanted me to do again
- 24:58Speaker 4: is just to embody that mental tough especially now with
- 25:01Speaker 4: the realm that I'm going into a play by play.
- 25:03Speaker 4: I'm going to be a part of the handful that
- 25:05Speaker 4: are black, but I'm gonna be probably in a lot
- 25:08Speaker 4: of different rooms and a lot of different games only
- 25:10Speaker 4: black women. So it's important for me to kind of
- 25:14Speaker 4: have again that headbust mentality, that mental toughness, the mental
- 25:17Speaker 4: fortitude to keep going despite the circumstances. And then when
- 25:21Speaker 4: we get into the nitty gritty of it all, he's like,
- 25:23Speaker 4: you know, I think you need to drop your voice
- 25:26Speaker 4: down a little bit when there's a big play. Don't
- 25:29Speaker 4: go high so you don't get excited, you know, make
- 25:31Speaker 4: sure that you are keeping it level.
- 25:33Speaker 3: We need to work on your terminology. Let's hop on
- 25:35Speaker 3: zoom and go through all of these different formations. We're
- 25:38Speaker 3: gonna put the game on mute and you're gonna be
- 25:40Speaker 3: the play by play and I'm gonna be the color
- 25:41Speaker 3: and we're gonna run through the whole game.
- 25:45Speaker 4: That's the type of training that I'm getting. Or like,
- 25:48Speaker 4: we went to a spring game last year and he
- 25:51Speaker 4: was like, Okay, right now, what they're doing is situational football.
- 25:54Speaker 4: So they're running all these different plays so that one
- 25:56Speaker 4: is in the game time, they know exactly what they're
- 25:57Speaker 4: gonna do.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Are you're paying attention?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Okay?
- 25:59Speaker 3: So basically what the quarterback is doing right here doing
- 26:01Speaker 3: the three drops up, he's gonna throw the ball, and
- 26:03Speaker 3: they're creating their gaps, the gap, the be gap, and
- 26:05Speaker 3: I'm like.
- 26:06Speaker 1: I told you, hers are on point. So was there
- 26:11Speaker 1: every time where you were like dag Man like back off?
- 26:15Speaker 2: Or were you always someone who accepted the advice that
- 26:17Speaker 2: he was giving you.
- 26:18Speaker 3: I always accepted it to his face. And then I
- 26:21Speaker 3: go to my mama.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And be like, man, your husband, girl, your husband, So
- 26:26Speaker 1: you mentioned her, so I'm going to ask about her.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Talk to us about your mom.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Benita Timmins, Oh.
- 26:31Speaker 1: The government name.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Okay, I love and I'm glad that you asked me
- 26:36Speaker 4: because a lot of times I feel like and I'm
- 26:39Speaker 4: sure your mom can relate as well as that it's
- 26:42Speaker 4: kind of like a fade into the background of who
- 26:43Speaker 4: your husband is, right and then now it's kind of
- 26:46Speaker 4: like that my siblings and I are becoming She's kind
- 26:50Speaker 4: of it's Jaden's mom or Floyd's mom or.
- 26:53Speaker 3: Tie his mom.
- 26:54Speaker 4: But I want to tell her, like Benita, you did
- 26:57Speaker 4: your big one girl. First of all, let's start with
- 27:01Speaker 4: the fact that none of your kids are ugly period.
- 27:04Speaker 3: None of your kids are. But no, there were times
- 27:08Speaker 3: when she had so.
- 27:09Speaker 1: You know, listen that ugly period chairs.
- 27:18Speaker 3: None of your kids's gens.
- 27:24Speaker 4: There was a lot of times where she had to
- 27:25Speaker 4: be you know, alone and raising us and getting us
- 27:29Speaker 4: to practices, sitting out at games.
- 27:31Speaker 3: And Drew my older brother, he played baseball.
- 27:33Speaker 4: So she did all of the things that she could
- 27:37Speaker 4: do to contribute to our growth and evolutionist people, and
- 27:39Speaker 4: she doesn't often get the praise. So I'm glad that
- 27:42Speaker 4: you asked me about her. I mean, she definitely be
- 27:45Speaker 4: getting me together. It's kind of funny because my dad's
- 27:48Speaker 4: more of the nurturer and she's more of the like,
- 27:51Speaker 4: I don't know why you crying. Don't be crying. You
- 27:55Speaker 4: can cry after you get to degree. Don't be crying.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Or who cares another to find another? Men are likes
- 28:02Speaker 4: you need foreign a spear. That's what my mom has said.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Wait a minute, please please say that again. Are you
- 28:08Speaker 1: going to see into that?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Because she said men are like tires you need you
- 28:16Speaker 2: need foreign a spare.
- 28:17Speaker 4: And I'm glad that she gave me that advice. Honestly,
- 28:20Speaker 4: I'm very lovely girl. So I begin in my heart broken.
- 28:23Speaker 4: I'll be putting on my eggs in one basket, and
- 28:26Speaker 4: I mean, she'd be telling me like you need to
- 28:33Speaker 4: get your thug up a little bit, like you know,
- 28:35Speaker 4: get your thug up.
- 28:37Speaker 3: But you know, did she come on the show?
- 28:38Speaker 1: I have to meet her. Please come on our show
- 28:43Speaker 1: and we call her. Do you think she lands?
- 28:45Speaker 3: I do think?
- 28:46Speaker 1: Please please call her? Okay, we have to call her.
- 28:51Speaker 2: We need to get some dating advice, like why don't
- 28:53Speaker 2: you tell the young Okay, like listen, I'm scared, you know,
- 28:58Speaker 2: and I I'm married.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Smara is about to be married. You know we're not single,
- 29:03Speaker 1: but I still need.
- 29:05Speaker 3: You're on speakerphone. Hello, Hello, she ain't go's you today?
- 29:16Speaker 3: She's laughing because she already knows. Hi, Miss Fanny.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Mom, you're on board to the game podcast. How are
- 29:23Speaker 1: you hi?
- 29:25Speaker 3: That's my mom. She's a baddy.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, she is stunning. That's what I'm saying, Like,
- 29:33Speaker 2: don't hi.
- 29:34Speaker 1: We're talking about you.
- 29:36Speaker 3: We're talking about you.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I told them about your famed advice of men are
- 29:39Speaker 4: like tyres need for in a spare right period.
- 29:44Speaker 1: So when it comes.
- 29:45Speaker 4: To me as your daughter, as you've seen me go
- 29:48Speaker 4: through dating, especially as a young adult, what have you
- 29:52Speaker 4: noticed about me and what do you wish I would
- 29:55Speaker 4: do differently?
- 29:58Speaker 5: I noticed that she is we gotta be living with
- 30:01Speaker 5: us for the rest of her life.
- 30:03Speaker 1: She has very high expectations. Mama always would.
- 30:12Speaker 3: You your potential son and I could be watching this.
- 30:17Speaker 1: He is gonna watching and we'll get around to that too.
- 30:19Speaker 5: Did you tell me to tell the truth or because
- 30:21Speaker 5: like ty used to come home and be like, oh
- 30:23Speaker 5: my feet hurt until my husband would rub her feet.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Do that you spoiled?
- 30:30Speaker 5: She's spoiled. She has her expect he has a great dad.
- 30:35Speaker 5: She tells her what she wants to hear, and let's
- 30:39Speaker 5: be realistic. She's not gonna I don't think because he
- 30:43Speaker 5: was giving you that daddy love.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Do you see what I'm talking about?
- 30:46Speaker 1: How she is like she's keeping.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Like dougast Rugg's bone, That's how she is.
- 30:52Speaker 1: He's giving me that daddy love.
- 30:53Speaker 5: But you need a husband love and you got to
- 30:57Speaker 5: separate the expectations of the two.
- 30:59Speaker 3: But I do.
- 31:00Speaker 2: So what's the what's the So what's the main thing
- 31:02Speaker 2: she should be looking for? So we're about to, you know,
- 31:05Speaker 2: do our about to shoot our shots? So what should
- 31:08Speaker 2: we be saying or what should be on the top
- 31:12Speaker 2: of the pilot?
- 31:13Speaker 1: Time?
- 31:14Speaker 4: They have significant we're married, so for time, what should hear.
- 31:19Speaker 3: That she needs to Jackson and trying ugly?
- 31:22Speaker 5: I try you.
- 31:25Speaker 1: What you mean?
- 31:27Speaker 3: I can hang up on home. She don't have the
- 31:30Speaker 3: media training.
- 31:31Speaker 4: You know what you you have? You have got to
- 31:36Speaker 4: go And what's crazy is my type is just a
- 31:38Speaker 4: little what's wait girl?
- 31:43Speaker 1: Wait what girl? She said five foot and shorter? Wait no, no, mom.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Said correctly correctly to and period job than you so
- 31:57Speaker 3: still sound hands?
- 32:01Speaker 1: Yeah, but it did. We're gonna be looking at my
- 32:05Speaker 1: mom said the same thing.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Anyway, mother, we I'm gonna hang up on you because
- 32:09Speaker 3: you are showing out.
- 32:10Speaker 1: But listen, love.
- 32:11Speaker 4: They asked me about you, what they asked me about you?
- 32:15Speaker 4: And I told them a little bit about you. But
- 32:19Speaker 4: now that I have you on the phone, I just
- 32:22Speaker 4: want to say that you're a great mom and you
- 32:25Speaker 4: don't get a lot of the shining praise, but you
- 32:27Speaker 4: really are.
- 32:28Speaker 1: You get my nerves.
- 32:29Speaker 3: You get my nerves a lot, but you know, but you.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Know, and we're gonna have to have you on miss
- 32:35Speaker 1: Banana on the couch, we really do.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Then I throw a punch for your mom.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Yes, yes, we love you, Miss all One.
- 32:49Speaker 3: You got.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Look and she said, she said, you're saying that were
- 32:56Speaker 2: too high.
- 32:57Speaker 3: You're raising your mom.
- 32:58Speaker 1: You don't, do you feel you're raising I feel like
- 33:00Speaker 1: we're in I.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Don't know if I'm raising her, but I've come to
- 33:03Speaker 4: the realization that she's living life for the first time too.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Yeah, everything that she does or.
- 33:08Speaker 3: That she says, it's not gonna always be what people
- 33:13Speaker 3: would correct. But she's she's hilarious.
- 33:17Speaker 1: As you can see.
- 33:17Speaker 3: We can see she's Sometimes.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I just be sitting there like, okay, girl.
- 33:26Speaker 3: And it's funny because.
- 33:26Speaker 4: She'll be like, you need to lower and you needed it,
- 33:29Speaker 4: and my dad will be like, don't you ever lower
- 33:30Speaker 4: your standards?
- 33:31Speaker 1: So do you think it's hard for men?
- 33:33Speaker 3: Though?
- 33:33Speaker 4: I think it can bet that standard. It just depends.
- 33:38Speaker 4: It depends on the kind of on the kind of man.
- 33:41Speaker 4: I feel like, like a real man, you're whoever your
- 33:44Speaker 4: man is, so I'm sure you can speak to him. Yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 4: they don't care. They're like, I got it, I got it.
- 33:49Speaker 4: But that's my dad's main requirement. He don't care how
- 33:51Speaker 4: he looks. He don't care none of that might my
- 33:54Speaker 4: dad said, you find someone who could do it like that,
- 33:57Speaker 4: that's it. Yeah, I don't think I'm off from that.
- 34:00Speaker 4: I don't know what that lady's talking about. Did you
- 34:02Speaker 4: lower your standards or are you?
- 34:05Speaker 3: Are you?
- 34:05Speaker 6: Do?
- 34:05Speaker 3: You drive a Mercedes and got to never fool on
- 34:08Speaker 3: your shoulders?
- 34:08Speaker 1: But do you know what I love? Though? There is
- 34:10Speaker 1: literally someone, Yeah, there literally is. They just come out
- 34:13Speaker 1: the sky. This is the craziest thing, But there is
- 34:16Speaker 1: somebody out there.
- 34:17Speaker 4: I'm learning that now, and I think that as women,
- 34:20Speaker 4: the biggest like the big thing is always like the
- 34:23Speaker 4: man and what the man is going to do and
- 34:25Speaker 4: how the man is going to blah blah blah.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Yeah, but when you get a good man.
- 34:28Speaker 4: That is of God, that is noble, you have to
- 34:30Speaker 4: make sure that you're the woman equipped to handle him
- 34:32Speaker 4: as well. So that for me is where we talked
- 34:36Speaker 4: about how I'm putting in all these power plays in motion,
- 34:39Speaker 4: planting all these seeds. That's one of those things like
- 34:42Speaker 4: really focusing on myself and making sure that I'm prepared. Yeah,
- 34:47Speaker 4: that is going to be prepared for that kind of
- 34:49Speaker 4: love and then what comes with that kind of love, because.
- 34:52Speaker 1: You definitely want to find be found prepared, you don't.
- 34:55Speaker 1: You don't want to be found not ready, especially when
- 34:58Speaker 1: the right one comes.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Along, because you could sabotage it.
- 35:01Speaker 1: You absolutely can. Yeah. Absolutely.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Do you think it's important for you to focus on
- 35:07Speaker 2: your career now as you are trying to find your person,
- 35:14Speaker 2: like still making sure that you have your own.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Absolutely what I'm trying to ask.
- 35:18Speaker 4: I think that because I connect my like what I'm
- 35:23Speaker 4: doing and like my purpose so closely to my like
- 35:27Speaker 4: faith in my diffnity, like it means something to me
- 35:33Speaker 4: and I just again we talked about God's invisible strings,
- 35:35Speaker 4: like when it's meant to happen. It's going to happen
- 35:38Speaker 4: for me and someone very wise. His name is Mike Cagrity.
- 35:41Speaker 4: He's actually Laura Oakman's husband. He said, whatever's going to
- 35:45Speaker 4: happen is already happened, so just enjoy it. And it's
- 35:47Speaker 4: the truth, like whatever's going to happen in life has
- 35:49Speaker 4: already happened, so just enjoy it. And I've spent so
- 35:53Speaker 4: much time, like I've spent so much time, like when
- 35:56Speaker 4: I look back at my twenties now, but when I
- 36:00Speaker 4: look back at my twenties, and I look back at
- 36:02Speaker 4: the things that like the time that was wasted when
- 36:06Speaker 4: I could have been focused on like me elevating and
- 36:09Speaker 4: all the things that I like to do instead of
- 36:11Speaker 4: trying to force love.
- 36:13Speaker 3: And God been looking at me from this guy like
- 36:16Speaker 3: I'm gonna.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Say the whole time, you are still young, so young,
- 36:19Speaker 2: so twenty seven, you are still Let.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Me say it one more time because I know that
- 36:23Speaker 3: I know.
- 36:25Speaker 4: My football kids, and you know my all of the
- 36:29Speaker 4: students that I work with at Alabama A and M.
- 36:31Speaker 3: I'm aunty around there.
- 36:33Speaker 2: No twenty seven, baby, auntie, God you and don't feel
- 36:39Speaker 2: like so to put into perspective. I got married and
- 36:43Speaker 2: had my first baby at thirty two.
- 36:46Speaker 3: That's the ideal for me. And when I say that, people.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Are like, oh, no, I promise you, you're doing it right.
- 36:52Speaker 3: The baby situates, you're gonna be sixty, I'm like, God,
- 36:56Speaker 3: you know.
- 36:56Speaker 1: You are so out of control.
- 36:58Speaker 3: You we're still very much in your prime. All the
- 37:01Speaker 3: lessons that you've learned.
- 37:02Speaker 2: And again you're still in your twenties, so you still
- 37:05Speaker 2: got some more lessons to But you are on the
- 37:08Speaker 2: right path, babe, I promise you and your husband he's
- 37:11Speaker 2: out there. We about to We're gonna start and we're
- 37:14Speaker 2: gonna talk about your dating life. We're gonna talk about
- 37:16Speaker 2: what you're looking for, green flags, red flags.
- 37:20Speaker 1: But before we do, before we get into that part,
- 37:23Speaker 1: let's let's tamara. I'm gonna ask this one more question,
- 37:26Speaker 1: and I think this will segue into our dating life somehow,
- 37:28Speaker 1: but we're gonna make it. Yeah, So what would you
- 37:30Speaker 1: say to younger self who is just starting in her
- 37:33Speaker 1: career in sports media? What advice would you give to her?
- 37:37Speaker 1: And then, if you want to, what advice would you
- 37:40Speaker 1: give to other girls? You talked about your mentors, the
- 37:43Speaker 1: people that have pushed you forward? What will you do
- 37:45Speaker 1: to push those behind you forward?
- 37:48Speaker 4: So to start with that question first, what I definitely
- 37:51Speaker 4: would love to do since I am getting my masters,
- 37:54Speaker 4: it would be a dream for me to be an
- 37:56Speaker 4: adjunct professor somewhere teaching journalism or sports journalism classes that
- 38:01Speaker 4: they would love to add that to their curriculum, specifically
- 38:03Speaker 4: at a historically black college and university. I feel like
- 38:06Speaker 4: being able to utilize my connections and call my dad
- 38:11Speaker 4: or my uncle Derek Brooks or Uncle Karol, Uncle Teo
- 38:14Speaker 4: to like come talk to my kids that I'm teaching
- 38:17Speaker 4: would be amazing. And then also the guys that I
- 38:19Speaker 4: know within the league currently, to give them that resume
- 38:23Speaker 4: building experience would be something that is a dream for me.
- 38:26Speaker 4: And then if that is not in my cards, definitely
- 38:30Speaker 4: going to do boot camps at different schools throughout the
- 38:33Speaker 4: year again more specifically HBCUs and being able to just
- 38:38Speaker 4: just teach them and give them insight into what I
- 38:41Speaker 4: have done. And I just got to do that with
- 38:43Speaker 4: the Morgan State University creatives. They invited me to come speak,
- 38:46Speaker 4: which was a really insightful experience and I love to
- 38:49Speaker 4: give them the real because.
- 38:50Speaker 3: I don't have it all together.
- 38:51Speaker 4: If you scroll down on my page, you only see
- 38:54Speaker 4: what I will allow you to see, y'all, Like people
- 38:57Speaker 4: haven't seen, like the fact that a lot of times
- 39:01Speaker 4: I was paying my own money to go to these places,
- 39:03Speaker 4: the fact that I worked those two jobs, the fact
- 39:06Speaker 4: that you know, it hasn't been easy, but it's always
- 39:10Speaker 4: been worth it, And so I always try to keep
- 39:12Speaker 4: it real with them. But that's what I plan to
- 39:15Speaker 4: do to get back and contribute. And then what I
- 39:18Speaker 4: would say to my younger self who is just starting
- 39:23Speaker 4: out her career, I would tell her that when you
- 39:29Speaker 4: focus on yourself and what you're supposed to be doing,
- 39:32Speaker 4: that's when everything falls into place for you. And then
- 39:34Speaker 4: I would reiterate the gradually, and then all of a.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Sudden, Yes, beautiful, thank you, You're so amazing with today.
- 39:46Speaker 3: I'm glad to be here.
- 39:47Speaker 4: I really am, and especially like you and I have
- 39:50Speaker 4: just met, but your energy and just how warm you
- 39:52Speaker 4: are has been has been so special and amazing. It's
- 39:56Speaker 4: great to be around women who are like that. And
- 39:58Speaker 4: then Mariyah, Oh my god, I remember calling you like,
- 40:02Speaker 4: oh my god, can you give me advice on this?
- 40:05Speaker 4: But I don't know what to do and talking about
- 40:08Speaker 4: my you know, my and all of that, just the
- 40:12Speaker 4: growing veins of being someone who was in college and
- 40:14Speaker 4: like fresh. You definitely made sure that I was okay,
- 40:20Speaker 4: And even as you were figuring it out, that meant
- 40:23Speaker 4: a lot to me because I don't have a big sister.
- 40:25Speaker 4: I have an older brother whom we met through and
- 40:29Speaker 4: it's he's he's he's good at giving advice. But you know, yeah,
- 40:37Speaker 4: so I really appreciate you, and I appreciate you for
- 40:40Speaker 4: allowing me to be here. Yeah, I've been amazing to
- 40:43Speaker 4: get you know, the lay of the land on this side.
- 40:46Speaker 1: It's easy for me. You're so good, You're so good.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Yeah, you talk about our energy. Your energy is amazing.
- 40:53Speaker 3: It's amazing you are. You are such a joy to
- 40:55Speaker 3: be around.
- 40:56Speaker 1: That's why I immediately thought of you.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Yes, when we were putting this together, Tie, where is Tie?
- 41:02Speaker 2: Her energy is beautiful? You're stunning, I said, Yes, it's
- 41:06Speaker 2: so much going on in your life. You're so wise
- 41:09Speaker 2: twenty seven, you very wise. I will say that you're very.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Wise and so and so focused on this and just
- 41:17Speaker 1: hustle twin your hustles. You really are. I mean, I
- 41:21Speaker 1: love that.
- 41:23Speaker 2: And we love it, you know that. But what we
- 41:26Speaker 2: are going to do, We're going to segue into it's
- 41:30Speaker 2: time to get tie a husband. Let's get tied a
- 41:33Speaker 2: ring on my finger.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Listen.
- 41:35Speaker 4: So I thought about this since the planning, okay, and
- 41:38Speaker 4: I realized that I cannot throw that hail Mary in
- 41:43Speaker 4: the world of football, just because I'm like one assignment
- 41:48Speaker 4: away from being like their colleague, you know what I mean?
- 41:51Speaker 1: Okay?
- 41:51Speaker 4: True, So that kind of scares me a little bit.
- 41:54Speaker 4: This is just my journalism mind speaking. However, I will
- 41:57Speaker 4: be shooting my shot today.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Okay, wait, okay, but let's let's not shoot our shot.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Let's throw a touchdown on the I don't have to
- 42:04Speaker 3: shoot my shot for this one because he's NBA.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Okay, So can we get our dry erase board marker,
- 42:13Speaker 2: I mean board, so that we can.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Guess who it is?
- 42:16Speaker 2: I feel like we should turn into a game, right,
- 42:18Speaker 2: Like guess who it.
- 42:19Speaker 1: Is has to be a game. It has to be
- 42:21Speaker 1: a game, right our friends they're gonna grab our d
- 42:24Speaker 1: So here's this is what I always say, is like,
- 42:26Speaker 1: you have to be able to say what you want.
- 42:28Speaker 1: If you can't say what you want and verbalize what
- 42:30Speaker 1: you want, then you're never going to get it. So
- 42:32Speaker 1: be the boat, okay, and say what it is you want.
- 42:35Speaker 1: If you want a six' five, man don't don't listen
- 42:39Speaker 1: to your, mama then you need to say.
- 42:41Speaker 4: That you know, What like, Okay so like ideally for,
- 42:44Speaker 4: me they would be, yeah so they would be six
- 42:50Speaker 4: five six four, five six, seven anywhere in that. RANGE
- 42:57Speaker 4: i really do. Love and have you ever seen like
- 42:59Speaker 4: an old line lineman or like defensive lineman body? Type,
- 43:03Speaker 4: yes so they're anywhere between like six four to six,
- 43:06Speaker 4: seven like two hundred and sixty.
- 43:09Speaker 3: PLUS i like.
- 43:10Speaker 1: That, Okay so that's what we're gonna talk. About but
- 43:13Speaker 1: that just.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Looks you have to be a man Of.
- 43:15Speaker 4: God you have to be a. Nurture you have to
- 43:17Speaker 4: be a provider and a. Protector you have to be emotionally,
- 43:20Speaker 4: intelligent and you have to be. Kind Because i'm watching.
- 43:22Speaker 3: This so if you talk to the housekeeper mean and, rude,
- 43:28Speaker 3: yeah cut. OFF i don't do. That, YEAH i don't
- 43:30Speaker 3: do that type of. Stuff you have to be humble as.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Well just treat just, yeah it treats, me. Right it's
- 43:35Speaker 1: so hard to be, kind do you, think? RIGHT i
- 43:38Speaker 1: just have no. Idea thank. You, okay you've been. HERE
- 43:42Speaker 1: i act like you've been. Here thank. You, Okay so
- 43:46Speaker 1: then let's we'll pick it back. Up is this for?
- 43:48Speaker 5: Me?
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yep, yeah that's well because she need, one she doesn't need.
- 43:51Speaker 3: One, Okay so we are doing the shoot your shot
- 44:01Speaker 3: and you, guys and we have to guess who it. Is,
- 44:04Speaker 3: no BUT i think we should do let's do two to.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Two and we made up a. Game we made up
- 44:10Speaker 1: a game usually truth and a, lie but we just
- 44:13Speaker 1: we made up our own. Game and it's called two
- 44:15Speaker 1: lies in the. Truth so you can tell us two
- 44:17Speaker 1: lies and then the. Truth we're supposed to guess the.
- 44:19Speaker 3: Truth about this person or just in so give us
- 44:23Speaker 3: so give.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Us three different.
- 44:25Speaker 2: Names, yes one of them is the crush the guy
- 44:29Speaker 2: that you want to shoot your shot, at And tomay
- 44:31Speaker 2: AND i have to guess who it. Is, Okay, okay
