- 0:00Let me ask you this. What do you think about being ignored?
- 0:03I, I'd say it depends. And when I go out into pub—
- 0:07to the public, which I try not to do because, you know,
- 0:10the public is there, but when I'm out in public, I'm really
- 0:13very happy if I'm ignored, if nobody notices me.
- 0:17It's one of the ways that God proves that he loves me is when people
- 0:20leave me alone. But what if you didn't want to be ignored?
- 0:25Uh, for example, you wouldn't want to be ignored if you had published a
- 0:28book, to give an oddly specific example.
- 0:32Uh, there was an American poet from the early 20th century,
- 0:36Don Marquis, and he said this: publishing a
- 0:40book of poetry is like dropping a rose petal into the Grand Canyon
- 0:45and waiting for the echo. He knew the pain of
- 0:49being ignored when he wanted to be noticed. Well,
- 0:52what if the person being ignored is
- 0:56Christ? What happens then? Stay with me,
- 0:59I got a story to tell. Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTeague, your host
- 1:03here every day at the Catholic Coming to you from the Station of the Cross
- 1:05Catholic Media Network. Let's take a closer look.
- 1:09Glad you're here. I've been reading through the Gospel of Matthew
- 1:13recently, and there's a passage, a passage of the
- 1:17Gospel that comes from Matthew
- 1:2111. And listen to this. Our Lord is in a bad mood.
- 1:25Jesus began to approach the towns where most of his mighty
- 1:29deeds had been done. Since they had not repented. Woe to
- 1:33you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds
- 1:38done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have long
- 1:41ago repented in sackcloth and ashes.
- 1:44But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre
- 1:48and Sidon on the Day of Judgment than for you.
- 1:53And as for you, Capernaum, Will you be exalted
- 1:57to heaven? You will go down to the netherworld. For if the mighty
- 2:01deeds had been done in your midst had been done in Sodom,
- 2:05it would have remained until this day.
- 2:08But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land
- 2:12of Sodom on the Day of Judgment than for you.
- 2:16That's what our Lord says in the Gospel of Matthew. Why, why is
- 2:19he so worked up? Well, he went to Chorazin,
- 2:23he went to Bethsaida, he went to Capernaum, And he
- 2:27preached the word. He did his mighty deeds, miracles,
- 2:31healings, exorcisms. And the response of
- 2:34the people was meh.
- 2:39They just went back to what they thought
- 2:43was more important.
- 2:47It takes one's breath away to have seen all those
- 2:51miracles, to hear Christ himself preach, and to just
- 2:55go back to business as usual. Now he compares these 3 cities
- 2:59that had witnessed miracles and authoritative proclamation
- 3:03of the gospel from Christ himself. He compares them first
- 3:07of all to Tyre and Sidon, which were at the time notoriously
- 3:11wicked towns. And as for Sodom,
- 3:15well, let's just say that it never
- 3:19really recovered from the divine retribution.
- 3:25Whatever they did, they really made God mad.
- 3:28And from what I hear, it wasn't just a failure of hospitality,
- 3:32but that's another story for another time. So he said,
- 3:35look, profoundly wicked cities are
- 3:40going to fare better than those who've met Christ and
- 3:44then ignored him. Now, mind you, these 3
- 3:47cities— Chorazin, Bethsaida, Capernaum— They
- 3:51didn't try to kill him or stone him or throw
- 3:54him off a cliff. They just went back
- 3:58to business as usual.
- 4:03And now we might be tempted to pray like the Pharisees. Instead of praying,
- 4:06Lord, I give you thanks I'm not like other men, uh, like this tax
- 4:11collector over here, might be tempted to say, Lord, I give you thanks I'm not
- 4:13like these cities. I'm not like Chorazin and Bethsaida.
- 4:17Uh, in Capernaum. But no, no, no, not so fast.
- 4:21Whenever we see in Scripture an accusation, a rebuke,
- 4:24a correction, especially from our Lord, the first thing we need to
- 4:29do is run to the mirror. We need to have an examination of conscience.
- 4:32We need to cry out in prayer, is it I, Lord?
- 4:36Probably is. So if
- 4:41you or I have heard the gospel, if we've met Christ,
- 4:45if we've witnessed miracles, if we've received them in the sacraments,
- 4:49and we're not better persons— not
- 4:54necessarily feeling good about ourselves, but being godly persons
- 4:58seeking for holiness and being conformed to Christ— if
- 5:02we're not doing that, we're bringing upon
- 5:05our heads the same kind of judgment that
- 5:09these 3 cities deserved. What do we do about that?
- 5:13Go to confession. Go to confession.
- 5:17Go to confession. Examine your conscience first. Go to confession.
- 5:21Do your penance. Reform your life. I have to do it.
- 5:25You have to do it. And then what? Well, there are
- 5:29people who still at this late date— and time
- 5:33is running out, make no mistake— there are people who at this late date still
- 5:38haven't heard Christ, haven't met Christ,
- 5:42don't know his gospel, his power, his authority, his resurrection.
- 5:47And it's up to you and me to get busy to introduce
- 5:51people to Christ. You might be bedridden, you might be home
- 5:55with kids, you might be like on a— locked in a cloister, you might not
- 5:58get out much. Lucky you. And then we
- 6:02have to intercede for those poor souls who
- 6:06don't yet know Christ. Pray that they may know him
- 6:10while there is still time. And then there are others,
- 6:14sadly, sadly,
- 6:17who have met Christ, who knew Christ,
- 6:20who turned to Christ, and then drifted,
- 6:25shall we say, or have decided to walk another
- 6:29path, or have found a new priority.
- 6:34We need to make reparation for them because they have offended
- 6:38our Lord and wounded his heart. And we want all
- 6:42of them to come back while there is still time.
- 6:46What's the moral of the story? We got work to do. We got
- 6:50to put our own house in order. We've got to proclaim Christ wherever we can,
- 6:54intercede for those who don't yet know him,
- 6:57make reparations for those who knew him and
- 7:01walked away. We've got a lot to think about
- 7:05and a lot of work to do, and it'll probably be better
- 7:08if we do it together. Let's get busy.
- 7:12Meanwhile, think on these things today, take them to prayer, and talk about
- 7:16it with those you love. Go in peace, and please do pray for me,
- 7:19for I am a sinner.
