- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis 18.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: The three visitors.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Later the Lord again appeared to Abraham near the oak trees of Mamre.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: It was the hottest part of the day, and Abraham was sitting at the door of his tent.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: He looked up and saw three men standing in front of him.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: When he saw the man, he ran to them and bowed before them.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Abraham said, Sirs, please stay awhile with me, your servant.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I will bring some water to wash your feet.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: You can rest under the trees.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I will get some food for you, and you can eat as much as you want.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Then you can continue your journey.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: The three men said, Do as you wish.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Abraham hurried to the tent.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: He said to Sarah, Quickly prepare enough flour for three loaves of bread.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Then Abraham ran to his cattle.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: He took his best young calf and gave it to the servant there.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: He told the servant to quickly kill the calf and prepare it for food.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Abraham brought the meat and some milk and cheese and set them down in front of the three men.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Then he stood near the men, ready to serve them while they sat under the tree and ate.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Then the men said to Abraham, Where is your wife Sarah?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Abraham said, She is there in the tent.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Then one of them said, I will come again in the spring.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: At that time your wife Sarah will have a son.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Sarah was listening in the tent and heard these things.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Abraham and Sarah were very old.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Sarah was past the right age for women to have children.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: So she laughed to herself and said I'm old and my husband is old.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: I am too old to have a baby.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said to Abraham, Sarah laughed and said she was too old to have a baby.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: But is anything too hard for the Lord?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I will come again in the spring just as I said I would, and your wife Sarah will have a son.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Sarah said, I didn't laugh.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: She said this because she was afraid.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said No, I know that is not true.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: You did laugh.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Then the men got up to leave.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: They looked toward Sodom and began walking in that direction.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Abraham walked with them to send them on their way.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Abraham's bargain with God The Lord said to himself, Should I tell Abraham what I'm going to do now?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Abraham will become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations on the earth will be blessed because of him.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I've made a special agreement with him.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: I did this so that he would command his children and his descendants to live the way the Lord wants them to.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: I did this so that they would live right and be fair.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Then I, the Lord, can give him what I promised.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said, I have heard many times that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah are very evil.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I will go and see if they are as bad as I have heard.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Then I will know for sure.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So the men turned and started walking toward Sodom while Abraham stood there before the Lord.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Then Abraham approached him and said, Will you destroy the good people while you are destroying those who are evil?
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: What if there are fifty good people in that city?
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Will you still destroy it?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Surely you will save the city for fifty good people living there.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Surely you would not destroy the city.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: You would not destroy fifty good people to kill those who are evil.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: If that happened, those who are good would be the same as those who are evil.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Both would be punished.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: As the judge of the whole world, surely you would do the right thing.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said, If I find fifty good people in the city of Sodom, I will save the whole city.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Then Abraham said, Compared to you, Lord, I am only dust and ashes, but let me bother you again and ask you this question What if there are five less than fifty?
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Will you destroy a pe a whole city because of five people?
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: The Lord said, If I find forty five good people there I will not destroy the city.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Abraham spoke again and he said, What if you only find forty good people?
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And the Lord said, If I find forty good people I will not destroy the city.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: They went on and on.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Then Abraham said, Lord, please don't be angry with me, but let me bother you this one last time.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: If you find ten good people there, what will you do?
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: The Lord said, If I find ten good people in the city, I will not destroy it.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: The Lord finished speaking to Abraham and then left.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Then Abraham went back home.
