- 1:31Speaker 4: to my dad was I wasn't gonna tell him until
- 1:34Speaker 4: this morning that he was coming on the show. My
- 1:38Speaker 4: mom told me that is the best plan of action
- 1:41Speaker 4: for him. Otherwise he would have been up all night
- 1:44Speaker 4: the night before, would have been nervous.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I just told him, I said, Dad, you can't fail
- 1:49Speaker 1: on this podcast. Like there's just no failing.
- 1:52Speaker 4: You know how big this is.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah?

- 3:00Speaker 1: do not have Papa shur I hate the papasher Papa Shurman.
- 3:03Speaker 1: If you are watching, I love you, I miss you.
- 3:05Speaker 1: I know you had something big pop up, but we

- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll kick it off.
- 3:14Speaker 6: This is my dad, John Uh, I'll let him take
- 3:16Speaker 6: it away.
- 3:18Speaker 4: What's up?
- 3:19Speaker 7: PT sickos? Yeah, yeah, getting this thing going right. Jack
- 3:26Speaker 7: pretty much said it all. John aka Chef Senior, the
- 3:30Speaker 7: man who taught him everything he needs to know about
- 3:33Speaker 7: cooking some things. He didn't great to be here. Happy
- 3:36Speaker 7: Father's Day, everybody, Hey, you are.
- 3:38Speaker 4: One his dad. It took about two seconds of him
- 3:45Speaker 4: coming around the corner when I showed up this morning
- 3:47Speaker 4: and I go, yeah, there's almost just.
- 3:50Speaker 1: The angle that they speak to where it's almost like
- 3:52Speaker 1: a ten degree angle down.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, and the delivery of how.
- 3:57Speaker 4: They speak, and it's not it's not the same voice,
- 4:01Speaker 4: but it's the same cadence. Yeah, an accent.
- 4:04Speaker 1: It's like a voice that gets on top of the
- 4:05Speaker 1: voice to deliver the message.
- 4:07Speaker 7: Yeah, there's no hide in it. That's my boy. I'm
- 4:13Speaker 7: his daddy loving it.
- 4:17Speaker 4: John is the father. He is the father.
- 4:20Speaker 5: They came in the door and Chef goes Derek. Then
- 4:22Speaker 5: I hear a little bit of a deeper voice Derek
- 4:25Speaker 5: in the same tone and stuff. I was like, that's
- 4:27Speaker 5: so sick. This is Chip. This is my dad. He
- 4:30Speaker 5: has been pr trained. He had had his own pockets
- 4:33Speaker 5: at one point, so he knows what not to say
- 4:35Speaker 5: and what tusay. He's very ready for this moment. He's
- 4:37Speaker 5: been thinking about it all morning.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So he's a podcaster.
- 4:40Speaker 5: He has had a podcast called Chip off the Block
- 4:43Speaker 5: where the two of us did a little pod and
- 4:44Speaker 5: he was thoughts from the bench, like my fake company.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Back to the day he was our head of HR.
- 4:52Speaker 8: Hi, I'm Chip, I'm Derek's dad. I am not podcast ready.
- 4:58Speaker 8: Thanks for having me, guys, this is great. Let's have fun.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Let's have some fun.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You know. This was something we put together because we're
- 5:06Speaker 1: having a Dad Combine in Nashville.
- 5:09Speaker 2: We're busting with the boys. We host this Dad Combine.
- 5:11Speaker 2: We have all the.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Guys in the shop, we get we fly our dads,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and we get our dads in and we just have
- 5:16Speaker 1: a day with our dads. We captured on film, have
- 5:18Speaker 1: some content, have some competitions, some trivia, a lot of
- 5:22Speaker 1: different things that just shows basically it's an excuse to
- 5:25Speaker 1: get our dads to town and hang out with them
- 5:27Speaker 1: for a day.
- 5:28Speaker 2: We feel like it's sick. We do it every year.
- 5:30Speaker 1: This is our fourth I believe Dad Combine, the fourth
- 5:33Speaker 1: Dad Combine, and knowing that we were going to have
- 5:37Speaker 1: them in town, that they were going to be in
- 5:38Speaker 1: the night before my dad drove in last night. Chip,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you got in yesterday. He good, Chip got in last night. John,
- 5:45Speaker 1: you drove here. You probably allowed him? Did you allow
- 5:48Speaker 1: him to drive your truck to tailor? Okay, you spliting
- 5:52Speaker 1: splitting time, But we figure, let's get the boys in,
- 5:55Speaker 1: Let's get the dad's in for a podcast at dad
- 5:57Speaker 1: Pod leading up to Father's Day.
- 5:59Speaker 2: So here we are. Do we have an opening question?
- 6:02Speaker 2: I know there's a lot. Uh, we're feeling each other.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Out, maybe maybe jumping into deecon.
- 6:09Speaker 5: I was just I would love to hear mister Compton's
- 6:11Speaker 5: take on the vacation that just happened. Just got off
- 6:14Speaker 5: an episode where you were talking about how awesome the
- 6:15Speaker 5: vacation was. I want to hear from the old man.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I mean, I had a great time.
- 6:20Speaker 3: It was. Yeah. They started out with a smart ass
- 6:24Speaker 3: video that he sent me.
- 6:26Speaker 2: But it was helpful.
- 6:27Speaker 3: I found the place and uh, you know, a couple
- 6:31Speaker 3: of days of the sun and you know, white sand
- 6:34Speaker 3: and you know, playing with the playing with the girls,
- 6:37Speaker 3: you know, and I don't get to see him as
- 6:40Speaker 3: much as I'd love to, and uh, it was just
- 6:43Speaker 3: a great family time.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I sent him the video because my dad struggles with
- 6:49Speaker 1: a just general direction, a little directionally challenged, a little
- 6:53Speaker 1: directionally challenged.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Are we realized that we made a lot of.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Friends though.
- 6:59Speaker 4: We were going.
- 7:00Speaker 2: We were already headed down to the beach.
- 7:01Speaker 1: So he was gonna fly in and operate kind of
- 7:03Speaker 1: like on his own to get into the spot. So
- 7:06Speaker 1: I went out to the side of the road and
- 7:08Speaker 1: I was like, all right, you're gonna be coming from
- 7:09Speaker 1: this way. Uber is gonna drop you off right here.
- 7:12Speaker 1: As you get dropped off right here, when you see
- 7:14Speaker 1: this gate that goes up and down, you don't need
- 7:16Speaker 1: it to go up. You can just walk around the
- 7:18Speaker 1: gate because it's it was a car gate perfect. I
- 7:21Speaker 1: was like, you don't need to go open there, you
- 7:23Speaker 1: just walk around the car gate. You're gonna walk in.
- 7:25Speaker 1: It's gonna be literally the second door on your left.
- 7:27Speaker 1: We're gonna walk in.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Here. Here's the letters, here's a bee. You're gonna see
- 7:31Speaker 2: a be and.
- 7:31Speaker 1: What was it twenty seven thirty seven B thirty seven
- 7:34Speaker 1: right here on the garage. That's the place we're gonna be.
- 7:37Speaker 1: You walk around. Here's the front door. I'm gonna leave
- 7:39Speaker 1: it unlocked for you. I walk in the you walk
- 7:41Speaker 1: in the house, you bang it right straight down the hallway.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna walk down the hallway for you. This is
- 7:46Speaker 1: your room.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Whenever you get set up.
- 7:48Speaker 1: I walk out the front door and I point down
- 7:50Speaker 1: the driveway that we're on where you can just walk
- 7:52Speaker 1: down toward the beach.
- 7:53Speaker 2: I'm like, Dad, just all you have to do is
- 7:55Speaker 2: walk straight right down there. We're gonna be on the beach.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You will find us.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'll even see your photo from where we're at. But
- 8:01Speaker 1: when you do walk down, had them completely set up? Bill?
- 8:04Speaker 4: And how how did that process work for you when
- 8:07Speaker 4: you arrived. Did you have the video out and you
- 8:10Speaker 4: just followed it to it?
- 8:11Speaker 3: Take the video out?
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yes?
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I watched it once before I attempted it.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:17Speaker 3: And uh and it was B thirty seven B three
- 8:22Speaker 3: seven B one letter, two numbers.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Yeah, And this is a man.
- 8:26Speaker 2: How many times you think you've been to the beach,
- 8:28Speaker 2: that's what he said.
- 8:29Speaker 4: He did say that.
- 8:31Speaker 2: He said that, he said beat that. Yeah, yeah, two numbers,
- 8:35Speaker 2: one letter Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 1: How many times in totality have you been to the
- 8:40Speaker 1: beach in your life?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Three?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Counting this weekend.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Your mom and I went to the beach before we
- 8:50Speaker 3: were married in Pensacolta.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Oh, and then the other two times were with us, Yes,
- 8:56Speaker 1: in thirty eight Yes, yeah there by Pensacola.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:02Speaker 1: My old man, he's not like, he doesn't go out
- 9:05Speaker 1: to the waterhole lot. So he gets down to the beach, yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 1: immediately shirts all you can see he's obviously lost like
- 9:10Speaker 1: sixty pounds over the less what a year and a half,
- 9:12Speaker 1: two years, two years, And he comes to the beach
- 9:18Speaker 1: chair and man, he gets the shirt off, he gets
- 9:21Speaker 1: ready to go. I'm fired up because I don't really
- 9:22Speaker 1: see my old man without his shirt on nice like
- 9:25Speaker 1: back in the day when he's hitting the most muscular
- 9:27Speaker 1: and everything else. But he gets the shirt off, he
- 9:29Speaker 1: gets on the beach chair and doesn't put on any
- 9:33Speaker 1: sunscreen and just lays out in sunbathes for like an hour.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And I'm thinking, I'm going back and forth in the water,
- 9:42Speaker 1: and I'm like, I hope, I'm guessing he got he
- 9:45Speaker 1: put on sunscreen at the at the beach house before
- 9:49Speaker 1: he came down here. So toward the end of the day,
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'm like, I get in. I think I'd get done showering,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and my Dad's like, I'm sunburnt to hell. I'm like,
- 9:57Speaker 1: do you put on any sunscreen? He's like, I didn't
- 9:59Speaker 1: for the first hour. I did kind of after I
- 10:01Speaker 1: laid out.
- 10:04Speaker 5: That wasn't a part of your video. Will in his defense,
- 10:06Speaker 5: like the video should said. The video should have said sunscreen, buddy.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Dad, here's sunscreen sitting on the bed, lather up in it.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Oh.
- 10:14Speaker 3: And he asked me, do you want some Let me
- 10:16Speaker 3: put sunscreen on you and I said no, no, I
- 10:19Speaker 3: want to. I want to get a little bit of
- 10:20Speaker 3: sun yeah, yeah, yeah, get a little dark.
- 10:23Speaker 4: You know, I don't blame you.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And then the tingling started happening. But like the skin
- 10:30Speaker 3: was getting tighter, I thought, maybe I'll put some sunscreen
- 10:34Speaker 3: on that.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Well with the little too late, with the weightlifting and
- 10:38Speaker 4: the most muscular background, I feel like the SBF five,
- 10:44Speaker 4: like the tanning motion, that might be the move because
- 10:47Speaker 4: if you keep on hitting at SBF five repeatedly throughout
- 10:51Speaker 4: the day, you build a good tan. Build don't get burned,
- 10:55Speaker 4: build a good.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Tan, build a good base.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Come back.
- 10:58Speaker 3: In those days, it was paint on tan, you know
- 11:01Speaker 3: what I mean, spray on tan? Oh really yeah yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 4: So just before the competition is when they rolled it out.
- 11:07Speaker 2: You co. Yeah, he had a little rattail in the
- 11:10Speaker 2: back in.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Our garages where there just be a blow up back
- 11:16Speaker 1: when he used to compete and he he was stacked.
- 11:19Speaker 4: How do the I am starting to witness the grandfather's
- 11:26Speaker 4: superpowers with my own daughters. Scarlet, she will be held
- 11:31Speaker 4: by anybody, But when my dad holds Scarlet, it's crazy
- 11:35Speaker 4: how she can just sit there and not have to
- 11:38Speaker 4: play with the thing, not have to move. She's so
- 11:41Speaker 4: happy in his arms. Do the superpowers translate with Rue
- 11:45Speaker 4: and Scott Silla?
- 11:46Speaker 3: What Rude does a lot with me? You know, I
- 11:50Speaker 3: mean we were playing this morning, you know what I mean,
- 11:52Speaker 3: she's Grandpa Grandpa and then you know, like, yeah, I
- 11:55Speaker 3: mean I.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Feel when he came in last night, we had to
- 11:57Speaker 1: keep bick Charo had this USh him to not talk
- 12:01Speaker 1: too loud because he came in right as Rue was
- 12:04Speaker 1: going to bed. And it was one of those nights
- 12:05Speaker 1: where Rue kind of came out of her door to
- 12:08Speaker 1: make sure I was coming up to lay with her
- 12:09Speaker 1: and scratch her back or something like, hey, mamma, can
- 12:11Speaker 1: you tuck me back in?
- 12:12Speaker 2: And she's like, I just touched you in And they
- 12:13Speaker 2: were on.
- 12:14Speaker 1: The stairwell, Grandpa sitting on the chair, and Charles like
- 12:17Speaker 1: shushing him to not talk, so that way Rue can't
- 12:19Speaker 1: find out that Grandpa has arrived, because then Roo would
- 12:22Speaker 1: have been up Christmas morning.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I remember the first time my dad came to visit
- 12:29Speaker 1: when we had Rue. You remember this, and I hand
- 12:34Speaker 1: Rue too him, Hey can you hold her real quick?
- 12:37Speaker 1: I remember he just holds her and sets her, sets
- 12:39Speaker 1: her on his knee, and then I think she's she
- 12:43Speaker 1: was being fussy right, And I'm like, well, do Dad,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you gotta do something with her, like give her a little.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Rock, give her a little like play with her a
- 12:49Speaker 2: little bit.
- 12:49Speaker 3: He's like, hell, I'm not the greatest with babies. So
- 12:57Speaker 3: much you feel like you know you're gonna do something wrong.
- 12:59Speaker 3: You're gonna heard him or something, you know.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yeah. I think it was said best by Delaney Walker
- 13:05Speaker 4: at Taylor's pool party where I was just looking for
- 13:08Speaker 4: a free hand to tighten the screws on on Scarlett's bottle,
- 13:13Speaker 4: and Delaney happens to be the closest guy to me,
- 13:15Speaker 4: and I go, Delaney, hey, do you mind holding Scarlett
- 13:19Speaker 4: just for a second. You go, I don't do other
- 13:21Speaker 4: people's kids. Man, and it's nothing against you, Like I
- 13:25Speaker 4: just you know what I mean, You know what I mean.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I was like, I was a little squeamish shit first,
- 13:31Speaker 3: but yeah, Will you know what I mean? They handed
- 13:34Speaker 3: them to me in the hospital. I wonder to know
- 13:36Speaker 3: if I wanted to cut the cord.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I'm like, no, but I cut it, you know, and
- 13:40Speaker 2: I didn't get it the first time.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Like Jesus, you.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Know, is there anybody more qualified than me in there?
- 13:47Speaker 9: You know?
- 13:48Speaker 4: Yeah? What? Wait? So Will was the firstborn?
- 13:51Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, correct?
- 13:52Speaker 4: That could be a really fun just kind of going
- 13:54Speaker 4: through the story of like delivery day with each one
- 13:57Speaker 4: of these dads. What was it like becoming a dad?
- 14:05Speaker 3: It's great, I mean it was. It was the best
- 14:08Speaker 3: feeling in the world. I always say that that's when
- 14:11Speaker 3: life begins. Yeah, is when you have your you know,
- 14:14Speaker 3: your first son. Let's get off the emotional stuff today. Okay, okay,
- 14:17Speaker 3: we're watching too many of these episodes and we're.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Not We're not going there. We're not crying.
- 14:24Speaker 4: This is our dads.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Joy.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Crying is a choice. Do we have any stories on
- 14:32Speaker 4: y'all's end of delivery day for your boys?
- 14:35Speaker 7: I remember Jack, remember both boys, But but Jack especially
- 14:39Speaker 7: was was made a big entrance. We waited forever, of course,
- 14:42Speaker 7: and then he decided. I think it was three in
- 14:44Speaker 7: the morning, water breaks and we're living up in you know, Plano, Frisco. Yeah,
- 14:49Speaker 7: I'm like, I'm in I'm Dad mode, ready, man, I mean,
- 14:52Speaker 7: the ship's packed, ready to go, camera everything. I'm like,
- 14:56Speaker 7: let's get in the car. We're doing ninety five miles
- 14:59Speaker 7: an hour down then North Dallas Tollway. So I call
- 15:02Speaker 7: the Grand the Grand Prix.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Basically, I was about to say, that's a that's a
- 15:06Speaker 4: fast one. You've been at three o'clock in the morning.
- 15:08Speaker 7: Yeah, So it's it's wide open and I'm pushing one
- 15:11Speaker 7: hundred miles an hour. She's telling me slow down. I'm like,
- 15:13Speaker 7: I got it, I got it. You know. It's just
- 15:15Speaker 7: full panic mode here too, which I said it wouldn't do.
- 15:19Speaker 7: And uh, we get there and then we wait, right,
- 15:23Speaker 7: So then Jack's not ready. So we had a guy
- 15:26Speaker 7: named doctor Carlos who was the chief of surgery there
- 15:29Speaker 7: at the hospital and in a great great obg y
- 15:32Speaker 7: n turned out to be by the time Jack was
- 15:36Speaker 7: being delivered, he said it was the hardest delivery he's
- 15:38Speaker 7: ever had in his life. They had to take one
- 15:39Speaker 7: of those suctions. And I don't know if I would
- 15:41Speaker 7: allow this to happen again, Like looking back, if I
- 15:43Speaker 7: could go back and change anything. You ever see Jack
- 15:46Speaker 7: with a little bit of a cone head, you know,
- 15:48Speaker 7: there's a reason for that, all right, that wasn't natural.
- 15:52Speaker 7: But doctor Carlos straps on this suction cup looking thing
- 15:58Speaker 7: and literally puts yea, I know, yes, yes, and wedges
- 16:04Speaker 7: him out.
- 16:05Speaker 3: And you're You're just standing there on the side of
- 16:07Speaker 3: the bench.
- 16:07Speaker 7: My mouth is open. I'm thinking the poor wife, you know,
- 16:10Speaker 7: just going through it, you know, and I'm trying to
- 16:13Speaker 7: do all I can to just encourage and stay the
- 16:16Speaker 7: hell out of the way.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Doctor pulls out a plunger ultimate get this boy, I
- 16:21Speaker 2: don't know what's going to happen.
- 16:22Speaker 7: I mean, this is this is scaring the hell out
- 16:24Speaker 7: of me, you know, and eventually got it out and
- 16:26Speaker 7: he's just like shaking his head. He goes, because I've
- 16:29Speaker 7: been doing this for twenty four years ago, that was
- 16:31Speaker 7: the hardest delivery I've ever done in my entire life.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Come on, chef, straight to the nick. Baby. How was he?
- 16:39Speaker 6: Was?
- 16:40Speaker 1: He?
- 16:40Speaker 4: A big baby? Pretty big?
- 16:41Speaker 7: Yeah? Pretty big. It's big bone, do we called him? Yeah? Yeah,
- 16:47Speaker 7: good frame. Carrying this boy around half of Texas?
- 16:51Speaker 4: What that is a show?
- 16:53Speaker 7: It was a delivery to remember wherever Lisa is right now.
- 16:56Speaker 7: Thank you, honey, you're amazing. You're the best.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Thank you, Lisa.
- 16:59Speaker 7: Thank you, Lisa. Let's used to you. Great job. So
- 17:02Speaker 7: it's a it's a wonder. I talked her into a
- 17:03Speaker 7: second one somehow, but we a few years will kind
- 17:06Speaker 7: of make you forget things time, So Chip, I'll pass
- 17:10Speaker 7: it over to you, buddy.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 17:13Speaker 10: Derek was our second one, so.
- 17:17Speaker 8: I was well prepared for all the things in the
- 17:22Speaker 8: operating room.
- 17:23Speaker 2: They're sure.
- 17:25Speaker 10: We knew what he was. We knew already had his name.
- 17:29Speaker 8: He was pretty simple, easy birth. Yeah, yeah, I mean,
- 17:35Speaker 8: if you can believe it. He was actually the smaller
- 17:37Speaker 8: of my two boys coming out. We like to tease
- 17:43Speaker 8: him that the Schwan's man had something to do with it.
- 17:46Speaker 4: We'll go, parents are.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Five to five and I'm six ft.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Hey, Derek, we're talking to the Schwan's truck. And we
- 17:54Speaker 1: used to get Schwan's all the time.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 8: We were a one income family and we were eating
- 18:04Speaker 8: schwan steaks and I always wondered why.
- 18:11Speaker 4: And I did uh notice that? When I came in,
- 18:14Speaker 4: I was like, yay, dee, Scott, I thought me and
- 18:16Speaker 4: I met your brother as well.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, a good day.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Come on ship. Were you a sports guy growing up
- 18:26Speaker 2: to a degree, Yeah, I.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Like when you're having when you're having you're the second
- 18:33Speaker 1: older brother.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Yeah, my older brother's about four years older, so we
- 18:36Speaker 5: both like played soccer and things growing up. My dad
- 18:38Speaker 5: was more of a pool shark as a kid than
- 18:39Speaker 5: a sports player.
- 18:40Speaker 1: But so on that we have dads and it's so
- 18:44Speaker 1: many boys in the family. For you guys, what was
- 18:48Speaker 1: the degree of wanting your boys to be athletes as
- 18:52Speaker 1: they're growing up? Like have you as you have the
- 18:54Speaker 1: first and second like me Cody? Obviously why it came
- 18:56Speaker 1: like six years later. But when you have a couple,
- 18:59Speaker 1: a couple of boys and you're kind of observing from
- 19:02Speaker 1: afar like this is going to be my athlete? Like
- 19:05Speaker 1: what was your position with Derek on you thinking he's
- 19:09Speaker 1: going to be athletic? What was your position on Chef
- 19:12Speaker 1: thinking it, wondering if he's going to be athletic.
- 19:15Speaker 8: I guess my position was, Yeah, I wanted him to
- 19:19Speaker 8: play something and you know, get him into as much
- 19:22Speaker 8: as he can, throw it on the wall and see
- 19:24Speaker 8: what sticks. He tried baseball. He wasn't very good at
- 19:29Speaker 8: baseball basketball. He tried hockey once. I only had to
- 19:35Speaker 8: pay for one session of that.
- 19:38Speaker 4: Did you cry?
- 19:45Speaker 8: He came up to the glass, his face was so
- 19:48Speaker 8: red and puffed out inside that him and I was like, yes,
- 19:51Speaker 8: I don't have a hockey player. Hockey's expensive.
- 19:55Speaker 5: I knew.
- 19:57Speaker 8: So. Then one day I came home and his mom said, hey,
- 20:00Speaker 8: I signed you up to help coach. And I was like, okay, fine,
- 20:05Speaker 8: I'd done basketball, I'd done baseball. I said, what is it?
- 20:08Speaker 8: She said, soccer. I don't know a damn thing about soccer,
- 20:13Speaker 8: you know, but I knew it was cheap. All you
- 20:15Speaker 8: had was cleats, and so I said, let's go with soccer.
- 20:22Speaker 8: But that seemed to be the one that stuck to
- 20:24Speaker 8: the wall. That's the one he played through college. So
- 20:27Speaker 8: I mean it was a good choice. But yeah, I
- 20:28Speaker 8: wanted him. I want him to do something, yeah, something sports.
- 20:32Speaker 4: And then he chose the most expensive position in soccer, goalie.
- 20:37Speaker 10: Yeah. Yeah, you know why Can I tell you why?
- 20:41Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 20:42Speaker 8: We moved from one age bracket to the next and
- 20:45Speaker 8: I told the whole group. I said, okay, guys, I
- 20:47Speaker 8: need a goalie. We're driving home. Derek says, Dad, I'll
- 20:52Speaker 8: be your goalie. I was like, okay, little did I
- 20:56Speaker 8: know he thought goalies didn't have to run.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Anything else.
- 21:03Speaker 8: Well that's not the case. But that's why he's a goalie.
- 21:08Speaker 4: I love that now, but coach whiten, goalie's running.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Chip also holds a record for getting kicked out of
- 21:14Speaker 5: my games the most out of any parent in our
- 21:16Speaker 5: entire youth organization.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Oh Chip, you were like.
- 21:18Speaker 5: That on his house run. Oh yeah, you can kiss
- 21:20Speaker 5: the whitest part of my ass. Collectively across the board,
- 21:24Speaker 5: other teams are be like, whose.
- 21:25Speaker 7: Dad is that?
- 21:25Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know, but he's.
- 21:26Speaker 7: A fucking doude.
- 21:27Speaker 4: That is well.
- 21:28Speaker 1: He started off explaining like, you know, I wanted him
- 21:30Speaker 1: to do something like, okay, he's he seems like he's
- 21:33Speaker 1: he's anchoring on it doesn't matter, he doesn't care, He's
- 21:36Speaker 1: not that the competition part, like, I just want him
- 21:38Speaker 1: to do something but here and then he gets kicked
- 21:40Speaker 1: out of games. It seemed like you had the competitive
- 21:43Speaker 1: juices were flowing.
- 21:44Speaker 10: I've only gotten one red card.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Okay, oh man.
- 21:54Speaker 10: But I did I did take a red card.
- 21:57Speaker 2: How about you, Papa Chef.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 7: I just want to say I was passionate as a
- 22:02Speaker 7: parent as well too, and I used to tell myself
- 22:05Speaker 7: I'm not I'm going to behave you know, and something
- 22:09Speaker 7: would happen and kind of just you know, kind of
- 22:11Speaker 7: get me going. So I can relate to that. We
- 22:14Speaker 7: were the same way, like, hey, you're doing something, and
- 22:17Speaker 7: want you to be involved in team sports once you
- 22:19Speaker 7: learn how to work with others, that kind of thing.
- 22:21Speaker 7: But deep down there was there was a vicarious kind
- 22:24Speaker 7: of element to it, want my kids to be an
- 22:27Speaker 7: athlete and play sports. We start off Jack and soccer,
- 22:30Speaker 7: and I played soccer, so it seemed like the natural
- 22:33Speaker 7: first start. We did a couple other tests. Yeah, we
- 22:36Speaker 7: did all the kind of the basic sports football. I
- 22:39Speaker 7: think we did a Titans camp for like a day
- 22:41Speaker 7: and it was must have been one hundred and ten
- 22:43Speaker 7: degrees outside and first time, maybe the only time Jack's
- 22:46Speaker 7: had pads on, and you know, he's lined up against
- 22:49Speaker 7: like a two hundred and ten pounds fourth grader and
- 22:53Speaker 7: only time Gavin.
- 22:54Speaker 9: Baloo and well he was probably like a mini. I
- 22:57Speaker 9: mean this guy I grew up with him. His name
- 22:59Speaker 9: is Gavin bl If you're listening in like seventh grade,
- 23:03Speaker 9: he was like I think he maxed out. I don't
- 23:06Speaker 9: want to they're Gavin a bus. He's like five nine,
- 23:08Speaker 9: like one hundred and eighty and like eighth grade.
- 23:11Speaker 6: It dude, was he had a boy and he knocked
- 23:14Speaker 6: the wind out of me.
- 23:15Speaker 9: And then they never let like instead of getting like
- 23:18Speaker 9: the get your ass back in out, they're like, oh, yeah,
- 23:20Speaker 9: you don't have to play.
- 23:21Speaker 6: So that's how I never ended up playing.
- 23:23Speaker 2: So that's the only time you had pads on in
- 23:26Speaker 2: your life. Yeah, yeah, I don't see how much.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Of a Tennessee volunteer football siico you are. Yep, I
- 23:32Speaker 1: know there's a did you know how far apart are
- 23:35Speaker 1: you and your brother.
- 23:36Speaker 7: Three three years, like three and a half.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Who's the better athlete Papa Chef?
- 23:42Speaker 7: Uh? I would say, you know, on paper, Jack was.
- 23:50Speaker 7: I would say Grant was probably a little more athletic
- 23:52Speaker 7: soccer player overall, but Jack had just as good of
- 23:56Speaker 7: a career, you know.
- 23:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Papa Chef just the Hayes in the barn, like Hayes
- 24:00Speaker 1: in the bar is what it is.
- 24:02Speaker 7: That's that's a that's a you know, I have to
- 24:04Speaker 7: be careful. They're a little bit too. But they are
- 24:06Speaker 7: both good athletes, very different athletes. Jack was kind of
- 24:10Speaker 7: that big brownny guy, Grant with skinny as a rail,
- 24:13Speaker 7: you know, but pretty nimble.
- 24:14Speaker 1: When when they're both like toddlers coming up, which one
- 24:17Speaker 1: were you like, Oh, this is going to be the.
- 24:19Speaker 7: I thought Jack at first. I mean Jack was just stronger, bigger,
- 24:23Speaker 7: you know, and and kind of had that vibe. And
- 24:25Speaker 7: I mean it's like any parent, if we're being honest,
- 24:27Speaker 7: it's like, hell, I'd love for my kid to play
- 24:29Speaker 7: in the NFL. I mean, that's that's that's got to
- 24:32Speaker 7: be a dream, you know, for that's what's what every
- 24:35Speaker 7: parent wants. And then at some point you start to
- 24:37Speaker 7: realize that you see the writing on the wall, like
- 24:39Speaker 7: maybe maybe it won't be maybe it's college show.
- 24:41Speaker 11: Huh.
- 24:42Speaker 6: Still yeah, college right, that's Jeff or Jack?
- 24:45Speaker 7: Yeah, And then that starts to fade and then it's like, well,
- 24:48Speaker 7: maybe high school is fine. High school there's another wrong
- 24:51Speaker 7: with you get the varsity team professionally and something or
- 24:55Speaker 7: other after that, so you kind of start to step
- 24:58Speaker 7: it down with with expectations versus you know, reality. Yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 7: this time goes so.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Chef, I love how you kind of you kind of
- 25:03Speaker 1: got fired up when he said when you guys were
- 25:06Speaker 1: coming up, he thought it was going to be you well,
- 25:09Speaker 1: and then it sounded like a little bro close not
- 25:11Speaker 1: only closed the gap, your dad had to rebalance expectations.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Your thoughts.
- 25:15Speaker 9: I'll give my little brother, but I don't know what
- 25:17Speaker 9: you give my little brother the benefit because he was
- 25:20Speaker 9: a very very late bloomer. It wasn't until like senior
- 25:23Speaker 9: year of high school grew he was like what five
- 25:24Speaker 9: seven going to senior high school? He's six three now
- 25:28Speaker 9: me so now like when he comes home, we'll get
- 25:31Speaker 9: in fights and I beat him up a lot as
- 25:35Speaker 9: a kid when he so he learned to be scrappy
- 25:37Speaker 9: and now he's six y three and still like really scrappy,
- 25:39Speaker 9: like not a guy you want to like? No, I mean,
- 25:43Speaker 9: I'll still kick his ass.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Did Papa Chef say Jack doesn't want it?
- 25:52Speaker 9: He knows what he's starting to I'll see him soon.
- 25:57Speaker 9: My little brother is like he is I can't say it.
- 26:00Speaker 9: He's like he's a motherfucker, you know, because he just
- 26:03Speaker 9: grew up really scrappy. And now he's figuring me, so
- 26:06Speaker 9: he likes stead it up. He'll try to bow up
- 26:08Speaker 9: on me. I'm like, hey, dude, I'll die right now.
- 26:11Speaker 9: You's gonna step in.
- 26:19Speaker 7: Hey, we're going to be together this weekend, so maybe
- 26:22Speaker 7: we could have a little match or challenge once and
- 26:29Speaker 7: for all.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I like it, Bill, what about you in what respect?
- 26:36Speaker 4: And the so in the respect of getting Willie see
- 26:39Speaker 4: because I know he did a lot of travel ball
- 26:42Speaker 4: growing up. Was that an expectation that you had of
- 26:47Speaker 4: wanting him to be in sports? Obviously with your weightlifting background,
- 26:51Speaker 4: but was it something early on you're like, hey, Willy
- 26:55Speaker 4: ses kind of got it. Yeah.
- 26:57Speaker 3: I mean I feel that I was a very objective
- 27:02Speaker 3: when it came to the kids. But with will he
- 27:06Speaker 3: just seemed more advanced than the other kids. The way
- 27:10Speaker 3: he moved, you know, and things, and and you know,
- 27:12Speaker 3: he always had pretty good size, you know, for a kid.
- 27:16Speaker 3: And then once we got into the youth football, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 3: he was even even in I mean after we got
- 27:25Speaker 3: going in high school. So you look like a man
- 27:27Speaker 3: playing with you.
- 27:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and he's a September birthday and you
- 27:32Speaker 4: graduated in you're born in when was I born born
- 27:37Speaker 4: in eighty.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I was born in eighty nine, graduated in two thousand
- 27:40Speaker 2: and eight.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Yeah, so you were in your grade. He wasn't even
- 27:42Speaker 4: old for his grade. It wasn't like you were an
- 27:44Speaker 4: early bloomery. He was like on the earlier half.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, old for the gray was more like June
- 27:51Speaker 2: big time.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Yeah, but no, I think that, Uh, I mean all
- 27:56Speaker 3: the all the you know kind of the boys picked
- 27:59Speaker 3: what they wanted to do.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I mean we he wanted us to do all the sports. Yeah,
- 28:04Speaker 1: but it was you know, you were hard on us.
- 28:07Speaker 3: I was hard on you. But I mean like if
- 28:10Speaker 3: he says, you know, I'm going to play football, then
- 28:12Speaker 3: I'm gonna be behind dad. And you know, if he's
- 28:14Speaker 3: going to train, we're going to train.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he'd come in and I'd be playing
- 28:20Speaker 1: video games and he'd get on my ass about like
- 28:22Speaker 1: we need to go outside and train. And because we
- 28:26Speaker 1: go out there, he'd had me doing walking lunges. I'll
- 28:30Speaker 1: be doing these duck walks of the barrow on my
- 28:32Speaker 1: back when we had like an incline, uh back in
- 28:37Speaker 1: the back alley. Yeah, and I'd be like doing these
- 28:39Speaker 1: duck walks asked down to the ground, just duck walking
- 28:42Speaker 1: up the alley and I'm talking like box squatting, but
- 28:46Speaker 1: like box squatting to make sure you get your depth
- 28:48Speaker 1: to where you go down and you're like sitting back
- 28:50Speaker 1: and then come kiss it. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, like
- 28:54Speaker 1: uh yeah, because I mean he had a background in
- 28:58Speaker 1: strength training, yeah, and body building and everything else, and
- 29:01Speaker 1: he was just big into that world. I remember we
- 29:02Speaker 1: would order these uh vhs tapes DVDs and Joe DeFranco,
- 29:07Speaker 1: who's very well known out in New Jersey for like
- 29:10Speaker 1: testing uh and just a training regiment that he would
- 29:14Speaker 1: just you'd have me on fairly young.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Yeah, but the hard part.
- 29:18Speaker 1: And I know I was I was always very good
- 29:21Speaker 1: at football, and I Sawid at baseball. He didn't care
- 29:25Speaker 1: as much for baseball. Wrestling was the sport growing up
- 29:32Speaker 1: because it was it was kind of like all year round.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And I wasn't near as good as Cody. Yeah, Cody
- 29:39Speaker 1: was a stud pretty much from the get go. Cody
- 29:41Speaker 1: was six years old in place what sixth in Nationals?
- 29:44Speaker 2: Fifth? Yeah, fifth in Nationals? Like his first year wrestling.
- 29:47Speaker 4: How much younger is Cody than you?
- 29:48Speaker 2: He's a year younger than me eighteen months.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Yet was he able to take you like at all?
- 29:53Speaker 2: I was always bigger, I mean at wrestling.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Yeah, when when we.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Got older like he would have Yeah, he would be me.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I don't think we ever wrestled, okay, but I know
- 30:01Speaker 1: awareness wise, like high school, Cody would have.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Cody would have been.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Damn so he had it.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, like I guess it could have been
- 30:08Speaker 1: tight because I was bigger and I still like knew
- 30:10Speaker 1: how to wrestle.
- 30:11Speaker 2: But Cody was very very good.
- 30:14Speaker 4: Bill. What did that year look like? I forget what
- 30:17Speaker 4: grade it was when y'all pretty much had to force
- 30:21Speaker 4: Will to wrestle.
- 30:23Speaker 3: That was his junior year of high school.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah, just for the dads, I was I had to
- 30:29Speaker 1: wrestle or I was grounded all winter.
- 30:32Speaker 3: I mean it seemed like a fair deal. It worked out.
- 30:45Speaker 4: What what? How did how did that work with you
- 30:50Speaker 4: coaching any of his teams and Slash some of that
- 30:54Speaker 4: training that you did in the backyard and some of
- 30:57Speaker 4: the wrestling work too. How was it coaching up? Well? Well,
- 31:02Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I mean once we'll got to high school, there wasn't
- 31:05Speaker 3: a lot, you know. I mean it was like you know,
- 31:08Speaker 3: Dad's not your coaching no more. You know, type of
- 31:10Speaker 3: things he'd monitor, like my training training. Yeah, i'd make
- 31:13Speaker 3: sure that the you know, if they're not doing certain
- 31:18Speaker 3: things at high school, that we're doing them, you know
- 31:20Speaker 3: in the garage. And yeah, yeah, the weak point type
- 31:23Speaker 3: of training. You know. But no, I think, uh, I really,
- 31:32Speaker 3: I mean, I know, I guess I was tough on
- 31:35Speaker 3: you since you always refer to that, but uh, just
- 31:40Speaker 3: like the junior year of wrestling, though, I knew that
- 31:43Speaker 3: that would help him build a lot of what you
- 31:46Speaker 3: can say, Yeah, yeah, built a lot of times. Yeah,
- 31:50Speaker 3: his times are the pro agility, you know, I mean,
- 31:53Speaker 3: everything went up. I knew it was good for his
- 31:55Speaker 3: balance fire now the whole. I mean, wrestling hits or
- 31:58Speaker 3: posterior chain like no other sports. And wrestling is about
- 32:01Speaker 3: the only sport that I know of. And somebody can argue,
- 32:05Speaker 3: but I see that as a sport that transfers, actually
- 32:08Speaker 3: transfers to other other sports.
- 32:11Speaker 2: You know. Yeah, And I you know, I.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Felt that that wouldn't help him because he.
- 32:15Speaker 2: Had combine stuff coming up.
- 32:17Speaker 3: You know, this was the big year, you know, his
- 32:19Speaker 3: junior year you start, you know, that's when when you
- 32:22Speaker 3: got to start making a name, yeah, and scout and
- 32:25Speaker 3: rivals and things like that. The way these camps coming up,
- 32:28Speaker 3: and it was like, there's no way we're going to
- 32:31Speaker 3: hit that pastior chain like wrestling is during the winter,
- 32:34Speaker 3: you know.
- 32:35Speaker 4: And plasterior chain is that back all the way down
- 32:37Speaker 4: to glutes.
- 32:38Speaker 3: That's everything you don't see in the mirror you have
- 32:40Speaker 3: from the button down.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Okay, okay, lower back down. The rule that my parents
- 32:45Speaker 4: had to go off of everybody being team bill was
- 32:48Speaker 4: if we didn't play a team sport you we would
- 32:52Speaker 4: have to have a job, was what my parents told me.
- 32:55Speaker 4: So like fully understand where you're coming from of like
- 32:59Speaker 4: if you're not involved in something with school, like my
- 33:02Speaker 4: parents were like, if you're not going to be in
- 33:03Speaker 4: a play and doing theater, you're not going to be
- 33:06Speaker 4: on a sports team, You're gonna.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Have a job doing an extra curriculu.
- 33:10Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 33:11Speaker 2: It was the same in our household.
- 33:12Speaker 1: And I kind of finessed them the spring before because
- 33:16Speaker 1: I told them that I was going to play baseball
- 33:18Speaker 1: and then I just didn't play baseball because I had
- 33:22Speaker 1: stopped doing track. Yeah, and then so my I stopped
- 33:25Speaker 1: doing track coatter my freshman year and then going into
- 33:28Speaker 1: my sophomore year, I said that I would play baseball
- 33:30Speaker 1: because if I didn't play baseball, like they wanted me
- 33:32Speaker 1: to do another sport other than football. Yeah, because I
- 33:35Speaker 1: kind of just started focusing on football, and so when
- 33:37Speaker 1: I finessed him, it didn't obviously it didn't go my way.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. And what kind of audience member fan were you?
- 33:46Speaker 4: Were you vocal at games?
- 33:48Speaker 3: I think that was pretty common.
- 33:50Speaker 2: No, he was, yeah, yeah, my dad was calm.
- 33:51Speaker 4: You seem like you would be.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:53Speaker 1: He was like if he coached us in like a
- 33:56Speaker 1: little league, like he was like on the staff, but
- 33:59Speaker 1: he was never he was never a guy on the
- 34:01Speaker 1: sideline like you you know, a bo Polini type yelling
- 34:05Speaker 1: from the sideline and that stuff.
- 34:07Speaker 2: It always be like one to one, yeah something, yeah,
- 34:11Speaker 2: something need to be said. It was pulled to the side.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Yeah you know.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 1: But he wasn't like even in high school, like when
- 34:16Speaker 1: he talks about like monitoring my training. He was always
- 34:18Speaker 1: very good about letting whatever staff coach, let them be
- 34:22Speaker 1: the coach. And then I would just have to bring
- 34:25Speaker 1: the programs home so he could look at him and
- 34:27Speaker 1: be like, we'll hit these things at home, but not
- 34:29Speaker 1: in like a he needs to go talk to the coach.
- 34:31Speaker 2: About you should be doing in your strength program.
- 34:33Speaker 4: That's very healthy, that's extremely help. It takes a ton
- 34:36Speaker 4: of pressure off you and allows you to still operate
- 34:39Speaker 4: as his dad, but be there to help as well.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:43Speaker 3: And I think when you're involved in wrestling like we were,
- 34:46Speaker 3: you know, in travel the country. You know. Yeah, with wrestling,
- 34:51Speaker 3: it's different. You know what I mean, parents are you
- 34:53Speaker 3: don't see I tell you what the worst was was baseball,
- 34:56Speaker 3: you know, parents getting crazy.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Ye, baseball is crazy.
- 35:01Speaker 3: I mean wrestling, you're it's one on one. Yeah, there's
- 35:04Speaker 3: nothing mom and dad's gonna be able to do anyway.
- 35:06Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 35:07Speaker 4: It's figured out on the mat.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Yeah, So I mean I think everybody was more chill
- 35:13Speaker 3: at that. You know, I don't, I don't remember. Only
- 35:16Speaker 3: a couple incidents is where parents got crazy at a
- 35:18Speaker 3: wrestling tournament. Yeah, you know, But so I think that
- 35:22Speaker 3: helped you with everything, you know, I mean I didn't
- 35:26Speaker 3: the training, everything you're it's you know, once game time,
- 35:30Speaker 3: we're gonna do it. Yeah, there's no need and getting
- 35:32Speaker 3: too crazy.
- 35:33Speaker 1: So yeah, wrestling was number one and that in the household.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Like when I refer to the tough love and everything else,
- 35:39Speaker 1: there's there's a part of me that's like like playing
- 35:41Speaker 1: in college at Nebraska.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Playing in the NFL, like all like uh, being proud.
- 35:45Speaker 2: I know he is.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I think of times where it's like football growing up,
- 35:49Speaker 1: you only played in the RGFL.
- 35:51Speaker 2: We had six games a year.
- 35:52Speaker 1: So even though I was really good the sport, that
- 35:55Speaker 1: kind of took over because it's not like he would
- 35:57Speaker 1: go to my baseball games and watch. But it wasn't
- 35:59Speaker 1: like interest. He loved the physical, the nature, the physical
- 36:03Speaker 1: nature stuff. He loved football, he loved wrestling, and so
- 36:07Speaker 1: knowing that wrestling could be all year round and we're
- 36:09Speaker 1: talking travel wrestling, travel all around the country, like Cody.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Was for wrestling people out there. Cody was a triple
- 36:15Speaker 2: crown winner for like what was it, Tulsa, Reno. There's
- 36:19Speaker 2: another one.
- 36:20Speaker 4: Tulsa is a big one. Yeah, Tulsa's a huge Tulsa
- 36:22Speaker 4: is a big one. And I know nothing about wrestling,
- 36:25Speaker 4: but I know that.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Cody was a stud and I just wasn't. I was
- 36:28Speaker 1: never Cody was always a state champion. I was always
- 36:31Speaker 1: like a silver I would get silver, I'd get second
- 36:34Speaker 1: at state or third, and Cody would always win. And
- 36:37Speaker 1: I was like, I see rude now, Like Ru's an
- 36:39Speaker 1: emotional she's shy, she'll be fast to cry. I do
- 36:43Speaker 1: feel like I was like that as a kid to
- 36:46Speaker 1: where it would take me. I wasn't tough the way
- 36:48Speaker 1: Cody was tough. So Cody, in my eyes, was always
- 36:52Speaker 1: like the favorite child to my dad because wrestling was
- 36:57Speaker 1: just all year round, all the time. It wasn't ntil football,
- 37:00Speaker 1: and we knew it was like my time to shine.
- 37:01Speaker 1: But again, that's only like six seven games a year. Yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 1: so in the other sports or being good at baseball
- 37:07Speaker 1: and want my dad to be fired up about baseball,
- 37:09Speaker 1: it just wasn't. That was more of my mom's cup
- 37:11Speaker 1: of tea. Would you say that's fair?
- 37:14Speaker 3: Well, now that you have two children, you know there's
- 37:17Speaker 3: no favorites. O.
- 37:21Speaker 4: What is that? What is that? That's a little ollipop, guys,
- 37:30Speaker 4: it's no surprise. We got our raspberry Shubert, we got
- 37:34Speaker 4: our BlackBerry vanilla. And you may be wondering, Sherman, which
- 37:39Speaker 4: one are you gonna drink? Are you gonna let chef
- 37:42Speaker 4: drink one? Chef's also here in studio. Is he gonna
- 37:45Speaker 4: is he gonna drink one?
- 37:48Speaker 3: All right?
- 37:48Speaker 4: Which I'll give chef. You get to choose. Do you
- 37:51Speaker 4: want raspberry Shubert or BlackBerry vanilla. It's a fabulous choice.
- 37:56Speaker 4: He could not have gone wrong on these choices of drink.
- 38:00Speaker 4: And don't don't we'll cut that part. But he made
- 38:09Speaker 4: he made a great selection. He couldn't have gone wrong.
- 38:12Speaker 4: He chose to BlackBerry vanilla. I have the raspberry sugary here.
- 38:16Speaker 4: These are the two newest flavors from Ollipop. They're absolutely incredible.
- 38:20Speaker 4: Lollipop has a long list of flavors, and I mean long,
- 38:24Speaker 4: and you really cannot go wrong with any of them.
- 38:26Speaker 4: I was just drinking watermelon lime the other day. Got
- 38:30Speaker 4: to introduce one of our interns to the classic cherry Cola.
- 38:34Speaker 4: He was a huge fan. We're just a big fan
- 38:38Speaker 4: of Ollipop. It's a different kind of soda. It's good
- 38:41Speaker 4: on your gut, it just doesn't it has the taste
- 38:46Speaker 4: without the oh man, I just drink a soda feeling
- 38:50Speaker 4: where you're like, that's like my second soda the day, whatever,
- 38:53Speaker 4: and you're kind of kicking yourself. I'm never kicking myself
- 38:55Speaker 4: because it's only thirty calories, six grams of fiber, two
- 38:59Speaker 4: grams or sugar. It's got probiotic, it's not gmo. Dude,
- 39:05Speaker 4: ollipop rips, and if you want some lollipop, guys, they're
- 39:08Speaker 4: actually throwing a really great deal right now. It is

- 39:57Speaker 4: they're there too. There everywhere you can buy them online
- 39:59Speaker 4: at Amazon. Guys, please drink lollipop.
- 40:03Speaker 3: We love you.
- 40:04Speaker 4: Let's get back to this dad episode. Loving this dad
- 40:07Speaker 4: episode and Happy Father's Day. We love you.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that is true and now you know, now you know?
- 40:15Speaker 4: And Bill, Yeah, that's a good segue into a question
- 40:19Speaker 4: that I really wanted to if we can't throw around
- 40:22Speaker 4: all the dads again, because that's a question that we
- 40:25Speaker 4: get a ton on this show is preparing for the
- 40:28Speaker 4: second one. What is it like when you have the
- 40:31Speaker 4: second one? How does that love translate across the board?
- 40:35Speaker 4: Do we want to have all the dads kind of
- 40:36Speaker 4: touch on there?
- 40:36Speaker 2: I love that.
- 40:39Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know that I have the words to,
- 40:41Speaker 3: you know, but when they say it was just like
- 40:44Speaker 3: it boom, it's just part of the family.
- 40:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 40:48Speaker 3: I mean, it's all of a sudden, now you have
- 40:50Speaker 3: this other little lenity and it's it's part of you.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Yeah, you know.
- 40:54Speaker 3: And and usually like Will and Cody became very close quickly,
- 41:01Speaker 3: you know, and it just it compliments everything else. I
- 41:05Speaker 3: don't think there's any easing endo anything. It just it's there,
- 41:09Speaker 3: you know, once your second one comes, it's it's you
- 41:14Speaker 3: don't have to be ready for anything. It's you know,
- 41:16Speaker 3: it just happens. Yeah, you know, the feeling, the love,
- 41:19Speaker 3: everything is there, you know.
- 41:21Speaker 2: So how about you, Papa Chef.
- 41:25Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think for me it just came
- 41:28Speaker 7: naturally as well too, Right, you just dive in and
- 41:31Speaker 7: and and and you love them, you don't love you
- 41:34Speaker 7: love them both the same, but yet you treat it.
- 41:35Speaker 7: Maybe the way you treat them was was a little
- 41:37Speaker 7: different for me, Like I knew the buttons to push
- 41:40Speaker 7: with Jack or what would work, you know, and what
- 41:43Speaker 7: wouldn't work? And same with Grant. Right, very different personalities
- 41:48Speaker 7: is what we found out really quick with both of them.
- 41:50Speaker 7: So what one approach And this is like kind of
- 41:52Speaker 7: my managerial philosophy too, but one approach or one may
- 41:55Speaker 7: not work for the other, you know too. But as
- 41:57Speaker 7: far as you're the way you're you're kind of your
- 42:00Speaker 7: your overarching way you love and support and show love
- 42:04Speaker 7: is is consistent, right, And the same with the two.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Do you have like an example of pushing buttons for
- 42:10Speaker 1: each of them to where.
- 42:14Speaker 2: I'm not trying to figure out a push shifts.
- 42:20Speaker 7: It's just like again more like that manager knowing what
- 42:23Speaker 7: motivates them knowing how to get the best out of him.
- 42:25Speaker 7: It was just very different for Grant versus versus Jack.
- 42:28Speaker 7: I mean to be more direct and just kind of
- 42:33Speaker 7: just tell him straight up, hey man, you need to
- 42:35Speaker 7: get your head out of your ass or you need
- 42:37Speaker 7: to do this better, and just very direct. Grant very sensitive.
- 42:40Speaker 7: The way he received information was different, and he could,
- 42:44Speaker 7: you know, he could clam up really quick. So I
- 42:46Speaker 7: had to kind of just rethink my approach and the
- 42:48Speaker 7: way I came at him and to try to get
- 42:50Speaker 7: him to do what he needed to do. But the
- 42:52Speaker 7: way I, you know, taught him that and it was
- 42:55Speaker 7: was different. And just getting around it. Just your approach
- 42:59Speaker 7: is different. But you you could just tell them straight up,
- 43:01Speaker 7: hey man, that ain't it. That ain't it man, stop
- 43:06Speaker 7: that shit right now? You know kind of things. So yeah,
- 43:10Speaker 7: that's again just just different approaches. But yeah, man, love
- 43:14Speaker 7: love is the same. And then I hopefully Jack you
- 43:16Speaker 7: feel the same or you don't. Is that does that
- 43:19Speaker 7: feel right?
- 43:20Speaker 4: He's self coaching?
- 43:21Speaker 1: Before there were there ever pockets like how I how
- 43:24Speaker 1: I think back two times where I'm thinking Cody's the favorite,
- 43:27Speaker 1: Like are there pockets of time where you felt like
- 43:30Speaker 1: I was getting a little bit more favoritism.
- 43:32Speaker 9: My little brother can't do wrong. I still think that.
- 43:35Speaker 9: There's still times and I love Grant. We're like, you know,
- 43:38Speaker 9: of course do like what all brothers do.
- 43:40Speaker 7: We fight.
- 43:40Speaker 9: We had a long period where we fought a lot.
- 43:42Speaker 9: I would literally kill someone for this kid. I really
- 43:44Speaker 9: mean that, But like, there are still instances where I'm like,
- 43:47Speaker 9: they take they're both younger. Him and my mom are
- 43:51Speaker 9: both younger siblings too, and I swear I've been on
- 43:53Speaker 9: the side where I'm like, I can't get this one right.
- 43:56Speaker 9: Grant is a very good natured kid. I was, I think,
- 44:00Speaker 9: very good. Like I was serious in school, like never
- 44:02Speaker 9: got in serious trouble. But I was definitely more of
- 44:04Speaker 9: like getting into small things here and there where I
- 44:08Speaker 9: get into trouble and stuff. So there was always like
- 44:10Speaker 9: a part of me that was like, oh, dude, like
- 44:12Speaker 9: the little brother can't screw up, and I feel like
- 44:14Speaker 9: I have all I do is keep getting in trouble
- 44:16Speaker 9: and stuff. But part of that was Grant also didn't
- 44:19Speaker 9: get in trouble because he was just a good kid.
- 44:21Speaker 9: I was just being at times to shithead. So it's
- 44:24Speaker 9: like you know nothing to do, but blame myself. But
- 44:27Speaker 9: there was a part of it where I would sit
- 44:28Speaker 9: there and be like this mother, you know, like can't
- 44:31Speaker 9: do no wrong.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Yeah, but it is fun to hear both your dad
- 44:36Speaker 4: and yourself touch on it because just in the office,
- 44:40Speaker 4: like Chef's self speak and like self coaching, like you
- 44:44Speaker 4: you are hard on yourself, and I don't think like
- 44:46Speaker 4: in an unhealthy way, but you you very quickly will accept.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Like if you mess up on something and you're like, hey,
- 44:54Speaker 4: I fucked this up and I'm going to fix it,
- 44:56Speaker 4: and blah blah blah, you're onto the next. So it's
- 44:59Speaker 4: cool to see how that translated, Like you really don't
- 45:04Speaker 4: have to kind of yeah to beat around the bush
- 45:07Speaker 4: with Chef. You can tell him, hey, that didn't work
- 45:10Speaker 4: and that broke and he's like, well, then I'm going
- 45:12Speaker 4: to fix it.
- 45:13Speaker 7: That's what mean.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Yeah, Like if this, if this, if our shop was
- 45:16Speaker 1: a football team, I do feel like Chef would be
- 45:19Speaker 1: in my world in my thought process, like much easier
- 45:23Speaker 1: to coach, very much because you can just look at him.
- 45:26Speaker 2: You can't and you already know he's beat himself up
- 45:28Speaker 2: about it.
- 45:29Speaker 4: Yeah, and you openly will ask me h with like
- 45:35Speaker 4: edits and stuff. Tell me if you see something, because
- 45:38Speaker 4: I'll tell you right now. I already don't like this
- 45:41Speaker 4: part and blah blah blah, Like you're yeah, that's fun.
- 45:44Speaker 2: How about with you, Jip.
- 45:49Speaker 8: I think our family resembles this family to my right here,
- 45:53Speaker 8: my oldest always thought Derek was the favorite. He just
- 46:01Speaker 8: probably because harder on him, the older one, because of
- 46:05Speaker 8: the way you had to try and get your message
- 46:08Speaker 8: across to him, where Derek always seemed to absorb what
- 46:12Speaker 8: you were trying to say. So when Chef's over here talking,
- 46:17Speaker 8: I'm like, yep, yep, I'm Nico's same way, Nico. You
- 46:21Speaker 8: know it took him a long time to figure out
- 46:23Speaker 8: Derek wasn't the favorite.
- 46:25Speaker 10: It was just how you receive the message.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I can see that too, Like when you talk
- 46:30Speaker 1: about him trying to process the message. I feel that
- 46:33Speaker 1: same vibe when you sit there and have conversations with Dike.
- 46:37Speaker 8: But no, I think your dad said it very good.
- 46:42Speaker 8: This gentleman said it well too. I can't add a
- 46:45Speaker 8: whole lot to it except for the fact that I
- 46:49Speaker 8: can feel Chef's pain, Nico.
- 46:54Speaker 5: The one thing I had too, is like the I
- 46:55Speaker 5: always felt like the expectations were larger on me, and
- 46:58Speaker 5: so I was sensitive to the things because my brother
- 47:01Speaker 5: was very talented at like very talented at soccer, but
- 47:04Speaker 5: I was and he got varsity I think senior year
- 47:06Speaker 5: and maybe junior year, and I came in freshman varsity starter,
- 47:09Speaker 5: and so there were parts of it where I was
- 47:10Speaker 5: just I did excel past him and things that he
- 47:13Speaker 5: kind of didn't have interest in. But because we were
- 47:15Speaker 5: both playing soccer, like my dad would be harder on
- 47:18Speaker 5: me because I always had the dream to play in college,
- 47:20Speaker 5: Nico just enjoyed soccer. So as I got older, I
- 47:24Speaker 5: realized the difference was he was being harder on me
- 47:27Speaker 5: because I told him my goal and my dad' said cool,
- 47:29Speaker 5: if that's your goal, then get your ass outside and
- 47:32Speaker 5: like do this shit. Yeah, Nico would do things because
- 47:34Speaker 5: he genuinely enjoyed doing them. And as I got older,
- 47:37Speaker 5: like the relationship with Nico has gotten different where I'm
- 47:40Speaker 5: just like he's his own person, but you look at
- 47:42Speaker 5: it as the younger brother, and I'm like, well, we're
- 47:44Speaker 5: both on varsity, but my dad's kicking my ass and
- 47:46Speaker 5: I'm four years younger, Like this shit should be impressive,
- 47:49Speaker 5: but it's not like none of it matters because I
- 47:51Speaker 5: had told him I wanted a goal and they were
- 47:53Speaker 5: holding me accountable to my goal. And so as you
- 47:54Speaker 5: get older you kind of see that perspective of it.
- 47:57Speaker 5: But at the time I'm like, well, this is bullshit, Like, no,
- 48:00Speaker 5: I'm I'm doing really well. Why am I not getting
- 48:02Speaker 5: Oh you want a cookie because you accomplished a quarter
- 48:04Speaker 5: of your goal? Like that's where you get with age
- 48:06Speaker 5: with it, which is cool.
- 48:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I do have another follow up question that's kind
- 48:10Speaker 4: of a roundtable, if we want to do that again.
- 48:13Speaker 4: When I came in, Derek was it was Derek versus
- 48:17Speaker 4: the printer, which we all know how the printer is
- 48:19Speaker 4: at this office. Yes, and Derek did win, but the
- 48:24Speaker 4: printer can it can be absolute hell. And so Deeke
- 48:28Speaker 4: is knee deep in that printer and it's just me
- 48:31Speaker 4: and Chip sitting there and Chip goes a lot of
- 48:34Speaker 4: his mom's coming out of him right now. And so
- 48:39Speaker 4: I now ask everybody, and we can start with Bill, Bill,
- 48:44Speaker 4: what are some qualities that you see and will that
- 48:48Speaker 4: will remind you of yourself?
- 48:57Speaker 3: Well, I'd say the way is with his people know people, uh,
- 49:03Speaker 3: you know, the way he the words I want er,
- 49:09Speaker 3: just intertwined with people, the way he can lead people.
- 49:15Speaker 3: You know, I I see that part. I don't see that.
- 49:19Speaker 3: He doesn't have my temper. Thank God, he's more level headed,
- 49:24Speaker 3: you know.
- 49:25Speaker 4: He can get there sometimes though.
- 49:27Speaker 3: I don't know where he gets that though, because his
- 49:28Speaker 3: mother was pretty goddheaded too. But uh no, I think
- 49:37Speaker 3: just to the the way he gets along with people
- 49:43Speaker 3: and things like that, you know. Yeah, his his ethic,
- 49:50Speaker 3: you know, working out, you know, I see that. Yeah,
- 49:53Speaker 3: you know, he trains hard, focuses on if he's got
- 49:57Speaker 3: a goal, he's he's.
- 49:58Speaker 4: All in, you know, very gold driven.
- 50:02Speaker 1: But yeah, I think it's very similar to the old
- 50:05Speaker 1: man because I remember when he was bodybuilding and focused
- 50:08Speaker 1: on training, like he'd be measuring his food, like he'd
- 50:11Speaker 1: have a little scale measures vegetables, measure the carbs, whatever, meat,
- 50:17Speaker 1: protein and all that stuff. He'd be if he's focused
- 50:20Speaker 1: on something like he is all in, and if he
- 50:23Speaker 1: has a bad day, it almost takes him off.
- 50:25Speaker 2: It almost takes him off the whole thing.
- 50:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like I have uh that with me too,
- 50:31Speaker 1: Like if I have a couple off days or I
- 50:33Speaker 1: have like I enjoy a few days. It's like when
- 50:35Speaker 1: I'd come home and you'd enjoy yourself and then it
- 50:38Speaker 1: almost be like the reset's happening. But then you don't
- 50:40Speaker 1: want to fully buy back into the reset because you've
- 50:42Speaker 1: already fucked up your entire structure.
- 50:46Speaker 2: Versus having like an.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Empathy and with it, yeah, versus having like an empathy
- 50:50Speaker 1: and a leniency to just be like, hey, just get
- 50:52Speaker 1: back on the horse.
- 50:53Speaker 4: You know, the whole thing is is up ended. You're
- 50:56Speaker 4: planning your ability to plan ahead on stuff as That
- 51:01Speaker 4: was one of the very first qualities that jumped out
- 51:04Speaker 4: at me about Will of I treat Twitter and social
- 51:08Speaker 4: media as when a funny thought comes to my head,
- 51:12Speaker 4: that's when I post it. I've always done that. One
- 51:16Speaker 4: of the first weeks in the office, Will comes up
- 51:18Speaker 4: to me and shows me his phone and goes, look,
- 51:21Speaker 4: I'm tweeting this right now about the Minnesota fans, and
- 51:24Speaker 4: it's gonna piss them off because Nebraska plays them in
- 51:27Speaker 4: two weeks. They're gonna start tweeting this. I'm gonna have
- 51:30Speaker 4: this plan to then hit them with that. Then that's
- 51:33Speaker 4: gonna And fast forward a month later and it went
- 51:35Speaker 4: exactly how Will thought it was. Gonna go, and I
- 51:39Speaker 4: was like, people don't just meticuate. That's not common, like
- 51:42Speaker 4: you hold little planning ahead. Because my wife listens to this,
- 51:45Speaker 4: so she'll be all, well, we all have our facets. Yeah, yeah,
- 51:49Speaker 4: we all have our facets of it.
- 51:51Speaker 3: I think another thing with Will, and it reminds me
- 51:54Speaker 3: myself though, is like, for example, I can understand, you know,
- 52:01Speaker 3: like working in a high tech world and intricral pieces
- 52:06Speaker 3: like that, but the small stuff I don't even give
- 52:10Speaker 3: it any thought, like changing the tires stuff like that,
- 52:12Speaker 3: you know what I mean. And he's the same way.
- 52:13Speaker 3: He couldn't fix anything. I remember one time Wyatt was
- 52:17Speaker 3: talking about working on the car, you know, yeah, and
- 52:21Speaker 3: he looked at me and said, we didn't get that,
- 52:22Speaker 3: Jeane did.
- 52:23Speaker 1: We said no, you know, shout out pet fix, shout
- 52:31Speaker 1: out PI.
- 52:34Speaker 4: I love it.
- 52:35Speaker 3: And to swing back around one thing I wanted to say,
- 52:37Speaker 3: Chef had a good point about when when you're in management,
- 52:42Speaker 3: you can't manage everybody the same. People don't react the
- 52:46Speaker 3: way in it. I remember with Will wrestling, you know,
- 52:50Speaker 3: I could go Mike did gone, and he would fold,
- 52:53Speaker 3: he'd crumble, you know what I mean. It was Cody,
- 52:55Speaker 3: that's what he responded to. Yeah, and to the point
- 52:59Speaker 3: where we brought in who became another family member of
- 53:02Speaker 3: Scottie spide Ill, and it was like, here you go,
- 53:05Speaker 3: he's yours, you know what I mean. Yeah, he was
- 53:08Speaker 3: a high school wrestler and and was just coming out
- 53:11Speaker 3: of high school. And and he had a gentle way
- 53:14Speaker 3: with Will to where Will got very good at wrestling. Yeah,
- 53:18Speaker 3: very good technician and and but the way I approached him,
- 53:24Speaker 3: and then full circle comes around he picks bo Polini
- 53:29Speaker 3: for his college I was about it miles compared to
- 53:33Speaker 3: boat Plan.
- 53:34Speaker 1: I was about to say, yeah, such a good Yeah,
- 53:38Speaker 1: it's my daddy issues.
- 53:39Speaker 4: It's a picture of be Poline. He just yeah, we
- 53:47Speaker 4: are running short of times, so we'll we'll kick it
- 53:50Speaker 4: off and keep on going around.
- 53:52Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I mean, it's it's funny. I mean, you
- 53:54Speaker 7: guys have probably already just seen this. People have always
- 53:57Speaker 7: thought Jack and I are just very similar, right, That's
- 54:00Speaker 7: the observation was family friends casually what you got where
- 54:04Speaker 7: you look, or what your man your mannerisms. But it's
- 54:07Speaker 7: it's funny like our our even our life paths have
- 54:09Speaker 7: mirrored uh each other in a lot of ways. Like
- 54:12Speaker 7: I feel like I know the mistakes Jack's going to
- 54:14Speaker 7: make before he makes them. Think about the lull the
- 54:18Speaker 7: second and third year of college there right, for example,
- 54:21Speaker 7: which I had the same exact experience, right, not casting.
- 54:26Speaker 7: I was the kind of teetering and and found a
- 54:28Speaker 7: way right and got over that hump, and that was
- 54:30Speaker 7: on my way with life. And it's funny. I see
- 54:33Speaker 7: a lot of similarities and and people will say the
- 54:35Speaker 7: same thing. Whereas Grants more like his mom personality wise.
- 54:39Speaker 7: But I think that that probably mostly like just being
- 54:42Speaker 7: socially at ease, I think is a trait you know
- 54:46Speaker 7: that Jack and I both possessed together that that is
- 54:49Speaker 7: probably the most obvious.
- 54:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I love that answer.
- 54:55Speaker 10: I think there gets a quality of friendship.
- 55:00Speaker 8: I think he makes friends really well, really easy, which
- 55:04Speaker 8: I do and my wife makes fun of me for it,
- 55:08Speaker 8: and some of Derek's friends we make fun of too.
- 55:10Speaker 8: But anyway, I think that's.
- 55:15Speaker 10: That's one of the things he gets for me.
- 55:18Speaker 4: This is my first time being with Chip in person.
- 55:22Speaker 4: I had Chip's number by what episode number for you?
- 55:26Speaker 4: Probably episode four earlier, I would assume. The day I
- 55:29Speaker 4: got hired. Yeah, Derek approached me and basically said Hey,
- 55:32Speaker 4: my dad, Chip wants your number. He has a question
- 55:36Speaker 4: for you. Is it okay if I give my dad
- 55:39Speaker 4: your number and he texts you? I go, yeah, dude,
- 55:43Speaker 4: Like definitely. I thought this was just gonna be some
- 55:46Speaker 4: one off thing. Chip and I have a text.
- 55:47Speaker 5: Shain And if we're talking about like me being sensitive,
- 55:50Speaker 5: Term's like, hey, your dad texted me. I had a
- 55:52Speaker 5: good episode last week. I'm like, he didn't fucking text me?
- 55:57Speaker 4: And you did? I mean you like? He text me
- 56:02Speaker 4: really kind somewhere We have comb back and forth. We
- 56:05Speaker 4: do now.
- 56:05Speaker 8: The original text was looking for where you threw your
- 56:08Speaker 8: trash in the dumpsters?
- 56:11Speaker 4: Right?
- 56:12Speaker 8: I wanted a dumpster finder? But what I got I'll
- 56:16Speaker 8: show you later.
- 56:16Speaker 4: Will Yeah, does he know that story?
- 56:20Speaker 11: Will?
- 56:23Speaker 4: I give Shirm the number?
- 56:24Speaker 5: And my Dad's like, yeah, I want to text him
- 56:26Speaker 5: and bust his balls and see if there's an app
- 56:27Speaker 5: to find the forgot about this, so I said, hey, Sherman,
- 56:30Speaker 5: I need you to trust me, like my dad's gonna
- 56:32Speaker 5: find it.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Funny.
- 56:32Speaker 5: We sent a u ur O link to my dad
- 56:34Speaker 5: that was the uh the funny image of the large
- 56:37Speaker 5: man with his penis erect and out, and my dad
- 56:40Speaker 5: clicked the link and he said, well, he texted me.
- 56:42Speaker 5: That's when he texted me. He said, you suck. Basically,
- 56:44Speaker 5: he's like, I had that in front of co workers,
- 56:46Speaker 5: showing him the dumpster San Francisco Chronicle.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 56:51Speaker 4: Yeah, which he was a good sport about.
- 56:52Speaker 5: But Shiran was like, I don't want to send this
- 56:53Speaker 5: to a grown man that I've never met.
- 56:55Speaker 4: A dude. Trust me. My face was truly a tomato
- 56:58Speaker 4: because I was like, I've never even I've hardly spoken
- 57:02Speaker 4: to your father. But if you think this is a
- 57:05Speaker 4: good idea to send, this'll laugh. I'll do it. Yeah,
- 57:09Speaker 4: and now hey, here we are.
- 57:10Speaker 8: Yep, here we are and I laughed. The funny response
- 57:14Speaker 8: was missus Whiteon.
- 57:15Speaker 10: She's like, what is that?
- 57:17Speaker 8: And I said, oh, Short texted me a dumpster app.
- 57:20Speaker 10: I said, go ahead, open it up.
- 57:21Speaker 11: She's like no, oh my god, no, oh by no,
- 57:29Speaker 11: she laughed like him.
- 57:33Speaker 1: It's just a bounce and we're talking about San Francisco
- 57:35Speaker 1: Chronicle image.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Just put that in on Google.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Yeah, you don't have to do that, six, don't.
- 57:43Speaker 2: His dad's already out there laughing the know we're talking about.
- 57:46Speaker 4: Don't look that up.
- 57:51Speaker 2: I have one final question, and she if we can
- 57:53Speaker 2: start with you.
- 57:54Speaker 1: We're all obviously grown up now and we're having our
- 57:57Speaker 1: dads on this podcast, which I think is unbelievable.
- 58:00Speaker 2: I love that this is happening.
- 58:02Speaker 1: When you think back in fatherhood, what is something you
- 58:06Speaker 1: feel like you wish you would have done differently? No,
- 58:11Speaker 1: and we all love each other, we're all connected, we're
- 58:13Speaker 1: all glad and pumped about where we're at. But just
- 58:16Speaker 1: for any dads that are in it right now, even
- 58:18Speaker 1: for us, like, what is something we should be more
- 58:20Speaker 1: conscious of that we might not see that you.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Would go back and back. I wish I would have
- 58:24Speaker 2: done this a little bit different.
- 58:29Speaker 8: On a lighter note, not taking as many red cards.
- 58:35Speaker 10: But I think maybe I let my passion into what
- 58:44Speaker 10: he did go to extreme.
- 58:49Speaker 8: I think as I get older, you know, I think
- 58:55Speaker 8: my passion should have stayed more like your dad's, you know,
- 58:58Speaker 8: keep it to the sideline, keep it, keep it to us,
- 59:03Speaker 8: because I know, and I watched you soccer a lot,
- 59:07Speaker 8: and I know a lot of people are like you know,
- 59:10Speaker 8: they think they're doing the best for their kids by
- 59:14Speaker 8: trying to be in the game. Let the game be itself,
- 59:19Speaker 8: Let the kids be the game. Not that I was
- 59:22Speaker 8: the most terrible person ever, but I could have been
- 59:26Speaker 8: a better person, And I think I think that's something
- 59:29Speaker 8: I would I would change.
- 59:32Speaker 2: I love that.
- 59:32Speaker 4: It's a great answer.
- 59:36Speaker 7: Oh gosh, there's probably a long list of stuff. But
- 59:39Speaker 7: since we're running out of time here, I think I
- 59:43Speaker 7: would have been harder on them in terms of accountability
- 59:48Speaker 7: and building routines even on a daily basis. That's probably
- 59:53Speaker 7: where my personality works a little bit against me. Probably
- 59:55Speaker 7: a little too nice at some some points, works against
- 59:57Speaker 7: me as a manager at times as well too. But
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: I think just driving that account of able from you know,
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: making your bed and doing this and and not letting
- 1:00:06Speaker 7: it slide. And there's probably things I let slide over
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: time that I look back and go, yeah, that was
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: a mistake, you know. Is that fair?
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: I know my parents would make me make the bed. Yeah.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: I probably should have been disasked more than I did.
- 1:00:22Speaker 7: Well said well, thank you. That's summarized perfectly.
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: I think. Uh No, I think I I I could
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: have been a little more understanding, you know, a little
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: less hard on him than I was. Uh And I think,
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: you know, I could have set a better example, you know,
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: st all the way around.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: There's that.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: That'd be a whole other show. For tell. The dad's
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: out there, what the hell not to do? But I'd say,
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: be more yeah, more understanding, And you know, I just
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: enjoyed the Moment's a little better.
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: Great answers all around. Uh, it's nine oh nine right now,
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: we need to wrap. Is there any final message real quick,
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: real real quick that all the dads would want to
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: say to their son, proud of them, love them, anything
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: like that.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: We we ain't trying to get it. We ain't trying.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: To know what I have to do.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: I will say I did uh when when I did
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: stop playing football? I did a podcast with Ben Newman
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: on busting and my dad had a message at the
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: end of it that was a surprise to me. And
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: so he at the very end of that episode, he
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: just articulates he's sitting on the back He's sitting on
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: the back porch and just like speaks to me through
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: their camera. If people want to know, if people would
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: love to hear what he said that we're emotional guys, man,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: even listening to dad's talking about their son.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: Do you want to say you want to say anything
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: about ye?
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: I will cry.
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: I won't go there, but I will I will say
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: this that you know we didn't. It's it's been a
- 1:02:08Speaker 7: it's been a great year with Jack. Like we've gotten
- 1:02:11Speaker 7: to reconnect over the last year. I mean, he was
- 1:02:13Speaker 7: Knoxville for five glorious years and uh, but we didn't
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: get to see him, and obviously he changed so much.
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: And right he comes home, there's an adjustment period. We're
- 1:02:23Speaker 7: getting to know each other. He's staying with us, saved
- 1:02:25Speaker 7: some money, right, we know all that. But I think
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: the thing that's impressed me the most is his work ethic.
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: He's the uh, he's really shown us a lot. Like
- 1:02:34Speaker 7: he's the first one out the door, he's the last one.
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: He is the last one to come back in. And
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: he you know, he's coming home and working and he
- 1:02:41Speaker 7: seems to enjoy it. I think that's the best We're
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: the most excited for us is he seems passionate about
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: it and he enjoys it. And I of course told him,
- 1:02:48Speaker 7: I said, hey, very few people get that and and
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: ever in their career. And you have it in your
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: first job, so you've got something special. Give it everything
- 1:02:56Speaker 7: you got, and and he has. He's he's taken and
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: run with it. So I think Lisa and I are
- 1:03:01Speaker 7: probably most proud of that. Just to see the work,
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: the work rate, and see the energy is putting into it,
- 1:03:07Speaker 7: that's good.
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: That's a good word.
- 1:03:13Speaker 8: I guess what I'm most proud of is the fact
- 1:03:15Speaker 8: that I wasn't all keen on the move to Nashville
- 1:03:18Speaker 8: from Pittsburgh. You know, I wasn't sure what was going
- 1:03:22Speaker 8: on down here. I knew there was country music. That's
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: all I knew there was in Nashville. Barbecue, come on,
- 1:03:28Speaker 8: let's go puckets. But what he's accomplished down here, and
- 1:03:34Speaker 8: especially now the last year's guys have really I think
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: he enjoys not only life, but life with work, life
- 1:03:42Speaker 8: with home. I think these guys have done a great
- 1:03:45Speaker 8: job with them. Thank you very much. His mother thanks
- 1:03:49Speaker 8: you too. So I think that's what I'm most proud
- 1:03:52Speaker 8: of is the fact that he came down here on
- 1:03:53Speaker 8: his own, did his thing.
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: Bounds you guys, and now he's happy.
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: My only thing I wanted to say before we wrapped
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: is loved this episode. This was a ton of fun.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: Wanted to make sure that all the dads heard that
- 1:04:10Speaker 4: y'all's sons are awesome and getting to do this show
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: with them is truly a blessing. This is a really
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: fun environment to get to work in and getting to
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: know these guys and the stuff that we share on
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: this show. It is heavy, like there's a lot of tears.
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: We've done a great job of avoiding them today, but
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: being able to grow closer with them, get to know
