Transcript
- 0:00Good to see everyone this morning.
- 0:02take your Bibles, if you will,
- 0:03and open them to Revelation chapter twenty one.
- 0:13We're going to be continuing our study of chapter 21
- 0:17and chapter 22 as John presents
- 0:23us a picture of the bride of the lamb.
- 0:27And as we get into these passages.
- 0:34You'll read things and go, Well,
- 0:36that sounds like heaven. That sounds like eternity.
- 0:40That doesn't sound like here and now.
- 0:42And we're gonna do we're gonna discuss a little bit of that ~ as
- 0:48we go through and help us hopefully to to be able to frame in context
- 0:54why John is talking this way. But let's begin with a word of prayer.
- 1:02Our gracious Father in heaven,
- 1:04we bow before your throne grateful for the revelation that
- 1:10you have given us through your holy prophets,
- 1:13through your apostles, through your Son,
- 1:16that we might have knowledge of things that without the word of Scripture
- 1:23we would not know.
- 1:26And that guides our actions, guides our life,
- 1:29teaches us concerning you and what you would have us to do.
- 1:34And may we always have a heart willing to hear that word of yours,
- 1:40willing to install it into our memory,
- 1:45into our heart, into our lives,
- 1:47into our actions, and into our words.
- 1:50That we might be a shining light to the world around us.
- 1:55That we might reflect your glory,
- 1:57that through us they might see you.
- 2:00Lord, we pray that you help us to grasp what you're
- 2:07teaching us about the church in these passages,
- 2:10that we might learn
- 2:14to apply the appropriate glory and respect to the body of Christ,
- 2:20to the bride of you the of the Lamb.
- 2:24Lord, we pray that you be with us as we go through this day.
- 2:27We pray that you be with those who are mourning from the loss of loved ones,
- 2:32those who are struggling with health issues,
- 2:35those who are anticipating upcoming procedures,
- 2:40and those who are seeking to recover from long term difficulties.
- 2:45Lord, we pray that you be with each and every one of them,
- 2:47and help us to be a support and a comfort to them in all of their needs.
- 2:55We ask that you forgive us when we sin and fall short of your glory.
- 2:58All this we pray in Jesus' name.
- 3:01Amen.
- 3:10Chapter 21 opens. And John says,
- 3:15I saw a new heaven and a new earth.
- 3:19For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,
- 3:26and there was no more sea. Then I,
- 3:29John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem,
- 3:32coming down out of heaven from God,
- 3:35prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
- 3:38And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying,
- 3:41Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men,
- 3:43and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people.
- 3:49God himself shall will be with them and be their God.
- 3:52And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
- 3:57There shall be no more death, nor sorrow,
- 3:59nor crying, there shall be no more pain.
- 4:02for the former things have passed away.
- 4:05John
- 4:07Is writing to them to tell them all of the tribulation,
- 4:12all of the difficulty, all of the things that I'm telling you
- 4:18you are going to go through.
- 4:23They all have an end.
- 4:26They have an end in which they'll be finished and they'll
- 4:31be swallowed up in victory.
- 4:37If you go over to First Corinthians chapter 15,
- 4:40Paul, as he is writing about life,
- 4:46and as he is writing about the resurrection,
- 4:50he is going to tell the Christians in Corinth
- 4:56in this passage concerning our final victory.
- 5:00In First Corinthians chapter 15,
- 5:02verse 50, he says, Now this I say,
- 5:05brethren.
- 5:06That flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,
- 5:11nor does corruption inherit incorruption.
- 5:16Is the kingdom of God made
- 5:21up of fleshly, earthly things?
- 5:26Is it made up of fleshly,
- 5:30earthly people? No.
- 5:35Do you know why John has been differentiating from the beginning
- 5:40of Revelation to the end of Revelation?
- 5:42Those who dwell on the earth as those who are sinners and reject the Word of God,
- 5:47and those who dwell in heaven as those who are alive in Christ.
- 5:54The reason he separates the two is because he knows the same thing Paul
- 6:01knows. Kingdom of God isn't made up of fleshly.
- 6:05Things. Now the people who are alive on the earth whose dwelling place
- 6:10is in heaven are alive on the earth.
- 6:14They interact in fleshly ways.
- 6:17They walk around in fleshly bodies.
- 6:19But Paul says that's not the part of you that is
- 6:26in the kingdom of God. Because you can't inherit the kingdom of
- 6:31God in the flesh.
- 6:34You can't take part in the kingdom of God in the flesh.
- 6:39And that's completely consistent with what Jesus said to Pilate,
- 6:42isn't it? Jesus said, if my kingdom were of this world,
- 6:46then would my what? My servants fight.
- 6:51If I was coming to build a fleshly,
- 6:55earthly kingdom.
- 7:00You'd have a host of people out here starting a riot and taking this city apart till
- 7:07they got to me.
- 7:10He also would warn Pilate that if he were to sow order,
- 7:15he could have ten thousand legions of angels show up.
- 7:20But Paul's point, John's point,
- 7:23Jesus' point is the kingdom of heaven that Daniel
- 7:31interpreted a dream about in Daniel chapter 2,
- 7:34and that Daniel saw a vision about in Daniel chapter 7 is not a kingdom
- 7:40on this earth.
- 7:47And so Paul will go on to say,
- 7:51Behold, I tell you a mystery we shall not all sleep,
- 7:54but we shall all be changed. In a moment,
- 7:57in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet,
- 8:00for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible,
- 8:04and we shall be changed.
- 8:10For this corruptible must put on incorruption,
- 8:12and this mortal must put on immortality.
- 8:19Notice that Paul says,
- 8:21you cannot inherit eternity with
- 8:28God in a fleshly existence.
- 8:36He says it's impossible.
- 8:41You must be changed into an immortal existence.
- 8:49An undying, unending existence.
- 8:52Now what part of our existence is undying and unending?
- 8:58Spirit and the soul. The soul and the spirit.
- 9:04James tells us very clearly what is death.
- 9:10Separation of the soul and the body.
- 9:16Now I I appreciate there are difficult passages in the New Testament,
- 9:22but the ones that aren't difficult we need to not abuse.
- 9:27Paul tells us that our eternal existence with the Father
- 9:33at the resurrection involves
- 9:36no zero fleshly existence.
- 9:43None.
- 9:48So
- 9:52How could we get to a new heaven and a new earth that are physical
- 9:57and a new Jerusalem that is physical and an existence being written about
- 10:03and interpreted out of Revelation twenty one that is physical?
- 10:09What makes these two passages contradict one another?
- 10:14Rather, Paul is talking about the last and final day.
- 10:21And John is talking about the existence of the church coming
- 10:27out of a period of persecution.
- 10:34And they're using similar language.
- 10:36They're not talking about the same thing.
- 10:41Verse fifty four, so when the corruptible has put on incorruption and
- 10:44the mortal has put on immortality,
- 10:46then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written Death is swallowed
- 10:50up in victory. And then he quotes the Old Testament minor prophets and says,
- 10:56O death, where is your sting, Hosea chapter thirteen?
- 11:02O Hades, where is your victory?
- 11:05The sting of death is sin,
- 11:08and the strength of sin is the law.
- 11:12The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law,
- 11:16but thanks be to God who gives us the what?
- 11:22Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 11:27Question there in verse fifty seven,
- 11:31is that present tense or future tense?
- 11:35Does he say will give us
- 11:39the victory or gives us the victory?
- 11:47Already gay.
- 12:02Absolutely. It is an active present description.
- 12:12The resurrection that Paul is writing about is a future event.
- 12:16The victory that he's writing about
- 12:22happens in the present tense. We have it,
- 12:27we live it, it is continual,
- 12:31and it is ever present with us.
- 12:33You say, Aaron, how can that be?
- 12:35We're still going to die. Yeah.
- 12:38It's true.
- 12:43Well what does that death mean to us?
- 12:47The director of the school of preaching where Eddie and I attended,
- 12:50Brother Wesley Simons, had a habit of reminding us that for a Christian,
- 12:56death is not a sad thing.
- 13:00It's a graduation. It's a graduation from this life
- 13:07to the next one. It is simply a transition from a lower point to a greater point.
- 13:17And Paul is writing to Christians who are giving up on the concept
- 13:21of the graduation and saying this is all there is.
- 13:29Well, Anyone who holds to a position of the new heaven and the new earth being
- 13:33a physical existence, even an eternal physical existence like was had
- 13:39in the garden has missed it.
- 13:44Paul says, flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,
- 13:50and corruptible cannot inherit incorruption.
- 13:54And We already have the victory.
- 14:00And so John will write, God's going to wipe away every tear from their eye.
- 14:05There will be no more death.
- 14:09Why? Death's already defeated.
- 14:13There will be no more sorrow. There will be no more crying.
- 14:17There will be no more pain. For the former things,
- 14:19the tribulation, the anguish, the persecution from Rome,
- 14:22the use of Rome by the devil, it's over.
- 14:28When Christ defeated Satan in the use of Rome,
- 14:33he defeated him completely.
- 14:39Unlike the United States of America for the last eight eighty years,
- 14:44when Christ starts a war, he finishes it.
- 14:47And wins every time.
- 14:51Now notice we read verse five:
- 14:57Then he who sat on the throne said,
- 14:58Behold, I make all things new.
- 15:00And he said to me, Write, for the words are true and faithful.
- 15:04And he said to me, It is done.
- 15:07Where where have you?
- 15:09Where have you read a a phrase like it is done?
- 15:17When Jesus Christ spoke from the cross.
- 15:21And says it is finished.
- 15:27And we read, It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega,
- 15:31the beginning and the end, I will give of the fountain of the water
- 15:37of life freely to him who thirsts.
- 15:42He who overcomes shall inherit all things,
- 15:44and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
- 15:48But the cowardly, unbelieving,
- 15:50abominable, murderers, sexually immoral,
- 15:53sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns
- 15:58with fire and brimstone, which is a second death.
- 16:00And you say, see, this is the judgment.
- 16:03He's talking about the punishment of all the wicked for all time.
- 16:09No, he's not.
- 16:12He's talking about Verse 17 of chapter 19.
- 16:18Then I saw an angel standing in the sun and cried with a loud voice,
- 16:21saying to the birds that fly in the midst of heaven,
- 16:23Come and gather together for the supper of the great God,
- 16:26that you may eat of the flesh of the kings,
- 16:28the cap the flesh of captains,
- 16:29the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses,
- 16:31and those who sit on them, the flesh of all people,
- 16:33free and slave, both small and great.
- 16:35And I saw the great kings, ~ I saw the beasts,
- 16:38the kings of the earth.
- 16:40And their armies gathered together to make war against him who sat on
- 16:43the horse and against his army,
- 16:44then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs
- 16:49in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of
- 16:52the beast and who worshipped his image,
- 16:54and those two were cast into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
- 16:57He's talking about the end of the war.
- 17:00The war with who? The war with the beast,
- 17:04the war with the sea beast, the war with the dragon,
- 17:07the war with Satan, the war with Rome.
- 17:12He's talking about all those who put the mark of the beast on their head,
- 17:16who said, I will pledge my allegiance to Rome,
- 17:21God says, and you'll get the same judgment they get.
- 17:29What did God in the Old Testament prophets tell the children of Israel?
- 17:37He said, if you go after the idols that this land went after,
- 17:44I'm sending you into a land and I am displacing and bringing
- 17:50to judgment all these nations.
- 17:52And if you go into the land and then you begin to follow after the idols that they
- 17:58followed after, and you begin to sacrifice your children.
- 18:02to their gods the way they did,
- 18:04and you begin to participate in the fornication and the adultery that they
- 18:08participated in, then I'm gonna do to you what I did to them.
- 18:16And when the leadership of Israel began to do exactly what God said not to do,
- 18:23and the kings of Israel began to participate in the things that God said not to do,
- 18:29God is going to tell the people,
- 18:32if you follow after them,
- 18:36to do the same things that I told you not to do,
- 18:40then I'm going to do to you, the people,
- 18:43the same thing that I'm going to do to them.
- 18:49That's what this passage is about.
- 18:50Now, is it true in the world today,
- 18:56and at the day of judgment,
- 19:00that all unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral
- 19:04and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in
- 19:07the lake which burns with fire and brimstone,
- 19:09which is the second death? Is that a true statement about an eternal judgment
- 19:14of God? Yes.
- 19:19So now you get the picture. They've taken a statement about judgment and said,
- 19:26God's doing it right now to these people who are your enemies.
- 19:30You asked Romans or Revelation chapter six,
- 19:34how long, O Lord, faithful and true,
- 19:39until you judge the people who are persecuting us?
- 19:43And God says, Let me tell you,
- 19:45I'm not gonna miss.
- 19:49One of them.
- 19:52Do you notice the emphasis here?
- 19:56As he gives this list
- 20:01In the word all
- 20:07The word all liars.
- 20:12Sometimes we appropriately teach children,
- 20:17using this passage, that lying is wrong.
- 20:22Revelation twenty one eight.
- 20:28That's not the lie that's being talked about.
- 20:33What is the lie that these people believed
- 20:41and repeated?
- 20:51There's there's part of it. But what was
- 20:56the message of Satan? What was the message of the dragon?
- 21:01What was the message of the sea beast?
- 21:03What was the message of the land beast about who God is?
- 21:15They said, Caesar is God.
- 21:21They said if you want to participate in this economy,
- 21:24you have to say Caesar is God.
- 21:30You go back to Exodus chapter twenty.
- 21:35And what does the Lord say?
- 21:39You shall have no other gods before
- 21:47me.
- 21:52The
- 21:56Is there is someone who's God other than the Lord?
- 22:03There is allegiance to someone other than the Lord.
- 22:11John doesn't say all the cowardly,
- 22:15all the unbelieving, all the abominable,
- 22:17all the murders. I mean, it's in it's it it's implied in there.
- 22:20But why is the word all attached to liars?
- 22:23Is it because lying is the worst sin of all sins?
- 22:28You got a guy out here murdering people,
- 22:31and you got a guy over here lying.
- 22:33Which one do you think we're gonna put in jail first?
- 22:39The point isn't about the sins,
- 22:41the point is about the lying was the culmination of them saying there
- 22:47is a God other than Jehovah.
- 22:56Pharaoh's question to Moses.
- 23:03was who is the Lord that
- 23:08I should obey him?
- 23:15Revelation twenty one, God says
- 23:19I'm going to show you who he is.
- 23:21He's the one who can take every single person
- 23:27who allies themselves with Satan,
- 23:30with his minions, with his puppet governments,
- 23:35with his rulers that he claims to be God,
- 23:38and declares them to be equal with me,
- 23:42and judges every single one.
- 23:47Now the language in Revelation 21 is Isaiah language.
- 23:52There's been times in the in the book of Revelation we've been
- 23:55in is Exodus language. We've been in coming out of Egypt language.
- 23:59But Isaiah 21 is Isaiah, or sorry,
- 24:02Revelation 21 is Isaiah language.
- 24:05New heaven and new earth is Isaiah language.
- 24:08New Jerusalem is Isaiah language.
- 24:10This description here.
- 24:16Is all about Isaiah. Because Isaiah was the prophet
- 24:22who continued to say to Israel,
- 24:24Go ahead, get your idols to speak.
- 24:29Get them to do anything.
- 24:33Get them to judge someone.
- 24:36Get them to punish someone. Get them to give you a blessing.
- 24:42Get them to do anything.
- 24:47God says they can't do it.
- 24:50And this passage is a reiteration of that to the church.
- 24:56You serve a God who speaks,
- 25:00you serve a God who creates, you serve a God who blesses,
- 25:04and you serve a God who judges.
- 25:11Eddie, did you have a comment?
- 25:12Okay.
- 25:16Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled the seven last plagues
- 25:20came to me and talked with me,
- 25:22saying, Now, let me jump ahead here in some slides.
- 25:28~ he says,
- 25:32Come, I will show you the bride,
- 25:35the lamb's wife. We talked about this briefly.
- 25:37There's an abundance of passages that tell you exactly who the bride is,
- 25:43who is the bride of Christ.
- 25:46Church. End of discussion.
- 25:50So when the angel who had one of the bowls says,
- 25:57Let me show you the bride, who is he showing John?
- 26:05The church. Any other interpretation?
- 26:12is incorrect.
- 26:15Okay. Now bear in mind that we have then
- 26:21to discuss the church when, and the church in what state,
- 26:26and the church from what point of view.
- 26:28But what we cannot argue about is it is the church.
- 26:32So notice what he says. And he carried me away
- 26:37in the spirit to a great and high mountain.
- 26:42And showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem,
- 26:45descending out of heaven from God.
- 26:49Where did where did Satan take Jesus during the temptations?
- 27:02First, they were in the wilderness.
- 27:06And Satan says to Jesus, Take the stones and and turn them to bread,
- 27:12so you can have some nourishment.
- 27:13And then now Luke and Matthew they flip flop the second and the third one,
- 27:18as to which order they were in.
- 27:20Doesn't matter. Then they go to the pinnacle of the temple.
- 27:27And at the highest peak of the temple,
- 27:29Satan says to Jesus, cast yourself off because the scripture has said that
- 27:34the angels will not allow you to dash your foot upon a stone.
- 27:37Test the Lord. See if he's true.
- 27:41He made a promise to you, see if he'll fulfill it.
- 27:44What did Jesus say in response?
- 27:50Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
- 27:56Then he takes him where?
- 28:02To a very high mountain. And what does he show Jesus?
- 28:08All the nations of the earth, name one mountain you can go stand on
- 28:12and see every nation on the planet from there.
- 28:17You can't.
- 28:20Not physically.
- 28:25But the point is not that they did all
- 28:29of these things and used only physical resources to do them.
- 28:34We're not reading about a nice long journey that Satan and the Lord hopped
- 28:39on the boat together, we're gonna go climb the Himalayas,
- 28:41we're gonna get to the highest peak,
- 28:43and then we're going to use an eyeglass that happened to be installed up there
- 28:47to go look at every nation. No.
- 28:50How long did it take Satan and the Lord to get there?
- 29:02Satan shows him all the nations of the earth,
- 29:06and what was it that Satan said I'll give you?
- 29:14Everything you see. If you'll simply do what?
- 29:24Sound familiar to the message of a beast?
- 29:30Sound familiar to the message of a dragon?
- 29:38So now John gets escorted to a very high mountain.
- 29:45And John sees descending out of heaven
- 29:54The bride adorned for her husband.
- 30:03But as he sees it, he says,
- 30:07it is the new Jerusalem.
- 30:13Notice the text He carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain
- 30:18and showed me the great city.
- 30:26The new, sorry, the holy Jerusalem,
- 30:31descending out of heaven from God.
- 30:34So ~ when we come back here earlier on in the chapter,
- 30:38and we read verse chapter twenty one,
- 30:40verse one, and I saw the new heaven and a new earth,
- 30:42for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away,
- 30:44and there was no more sea, then I,
- 30:46John, saw the holy city,
- 30:50New Jerusalem. What is it?
- 30:56It's the bride.
- 30:59When John sees the new Jerusalem in the new heaven and the new earth,
- 31:04he sees
- 31:09We know that because we're told that.
- 31:11He says, I saw the holy Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God.
- 31:18He's over here on the mountain and he's watching.
- 31:21And out of heaven comes the bride.
- 31:24And it's the holy Jerusalem.
- 31:29And he sees it descending from heaven.
- 31:35out of heaven from God. Whatever we have in this passage,
- 31:41it is not heaven.
- 31:48Because it is descending out of heaven.
- 31:57Now put two things together. Satan took Jesus to a high mountain and said,
- 32:02I'll give you all the nations.
- 32:10And John gets taken to a high mountain.
- 32:14And John sees the new Jerusalem descending out
- 32:18of heaven from God. Now connect that
- 32:24and that back to Daniel chapter two.
- 32:32Head of gold, nation of Babylon,
- 32:35arms and chest of silver,
- 32:38nation of Medo Persia, belly and thighs of brass,
- 32:44nation of Greece, the legs of iron and feet of iron mixed with clay,
- 32:50the nation of Rome.
- 32:56And God tells Nebuchadnezzar, I'm gonna tell you what I'm gonna do.
- 33:03And Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar,
- 33:04the Lord has seen fit to show you as the greatest of
- 33:10all of these kings.
- 33:16What I'm gonna do.
- 33:20In the days of these kings, the kings of Rome,
- 33:23the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never
- 33:31be destroyed.
- 33:35And it is going to break in pieces and crush all of these kingdoms.
- 33:44It's gonna grind them into powder.
- 33:48You see, Satan came along and said,
- 33:50If you don't set up your kingdom,
- 33:52I'll give you all these.
- 33:57And Jesus in essence says, I I'm I'm gonna worship the Lord God.
- 34:02He's already got all of these.
- 34:07You just don't know it yet.
- 34:11And he did what Isaiah always says the Lord does.
- 34:14He told you how it's going to end before it ever began.
- 34:22John sees the holy city, the new Jerusalem coming up.
- 34:47So, so ~ good question. All right.
- 34:49So is John seeing something that's going to happen?
- 34:52Is John seeing something that has already happened?
- 34:55Is John seeing something that is happening?
- 34:57And the answer to that is John's seeing the fulfillment
- 35:03of Daniel's prophecy. Daniel's prophecy didn't
- 35:08big didn't end with the coming and the establishment of the kingdom,
- 35:13did it?
- 35:15It ended with the crushing of the earthly kingdoms and doing away with them.
- 35:26This is it. Absolutely. This is God saying,
- 35:30I'm going to show you that we win.
- 35:34I'm going to show you that I set up a kingdom and it is going to
- 35:40do exactly what I promised it would do.
- 35:43And it's going to do to these kingdoms and these four nations and these four beasts
- 35:49exactly what I said they were going to do.
- 35:53And when you look at it, you're gonna go,
- 35:55that kingdom's never gonna be destroyed.
- 35:58Now, Watch how he pictures the kingdom.
- 36:01Watch how he pictures the bride.
- 36:04Watch the picture,
- 36:07if you were to think about it from earthly terms,
- 36:10that John now sees as he's there on the high mountain and he's watching this happen,
- 36:15and he sees the bride descending out of the very presence of God.
- 36:19And notice how John is getting that described.
- 36:23He says, having the glory of God.
- 36:25Her light was like a most precious stone.
- 36:30And we're going to talk about that light again later here at the
- 36:35end of this chapter. But her light was like the most precious stone,
- 36:40like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
- 36:43Also, she had a great and high wall with twelve gates
- 36:49and twelve angels at the gates.
- 36:52And the names written on them,
- 36:55which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel.
- 36:58You look at the gate as John sees the city descending out of heaven,
- 37:03and he sees it descending from the presence of God,
- 37:07and he sees it with God's glory and the light of God,
- 37:10and it's so beautiful. And he sees a gate and a gate and a gate and a gate
- 37:15and a gate and a gate and a gate and a gate and a gate and a gate.
- 37:23Three entrances on every side because by the way,
- 37:25it's City Four Square.
- 37:29And he sees all of these gates.
- 37:33And they're adorned with all of these precious stones.
- 37:38And written
- 37:42on the gates are the names of what?
- 37:49twelve tribes of Israel.
- 37:54Here's one more Exodus reference.
- 37:58In the tabernacle.
- 38:02Which by the way we just read about in chap earlier on in this chapter,
- 38:05right? The tabernacle, God being with his people,
- 38:09and they'll I will be their God and they will be my people.
- 38:12We already read about the tabernacle.
- 38:13How was the camp of Israel set up when they were there at Mount Sinai
- 38:17and when they traveled and everywhere they went in the wilderness for 40 years?
- 38:20Tabernacle was in the center,
- 38:23and the tribes were arrayed around the tabernacle,
- 38:29by tribes.
- 38:32Just another picture. John sees the city,
- 38:36and he sees the gates, and on the gate,
- 38:38every gate, one tribe of Israel.
- 38:42And notice he says,
- 38:46Now on the wall of the city had twelve foundations,
- 38:50and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
- 38:58Someone comes along and says, ~ see,
- 39:00this is this is just inaccurate.
- 39:01~ there were thirteen tribes.
- 39:06True. Because Levi's not among the twelve tribes of Israel.
- 39:11Levi's the thirteenth tribe of Israel.
- 39:14Because Joshua, or Joseph's rather,
- 39:17has two tribes, Ephraim, Manasseh.
- 39:20So are there thirteen tribes? Yes.
- 39:23Well, guess what? There's 14 apostles.
- 39:29But what does the number twelve represent?
- 39:31God's people. It's not about exact numbers,
- 39:37it's about what the number represents.
- 39:39God's people
- 39:44And so he says, I I looked at this city.
- 39:48Now he hasn't told you what the city looks like in size yet,
- 39:52so you don't really know just exactly how big this foundation really is.
- 39:56But he looks at the foundation and written on the foundation,
- 40:02of which there are twelve.
- 40:07Are the names of the apostles.
- 40:11You think Judas' name was on one of them?
- 40:13I don't think so.
- 40:18I think if John had had his way,
- 40:20the only name left off would have been John's.
- 40:26But he sees the names of the apostles of the Lamb.
- 40:31On the foundations of the city.
- 40:33He sees the names of the tribes of Israel on the gates of the city.
- 40:39How many thrones were there that were elders were sitting upon
- 40:45in Revelation chapter four as John looks into the throne room of God?
- 40:52twenty four twelve apostles twelve tribes.
- 41:00Twenty-four thrones. It's a picture of God's people.
- 41:05So notice, he says.
- 41:10Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations,
- 41:13and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb,
- 41:16and he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city,
- 41:21its gates and its wall. Now this is Ezekiel language,
- 41:25right? Ezekiel's given a rod and he's told to go measure the city of Jerusalem.
- 41:33So he takes this gold reed and he's gonna measure the city and the gates
- 41:38and its walls, and the city is laid out as a square,
- 41:41and its length is as great as its breadth.
- 41:45Okay, well that means it's a what?
- 41:47Square. John's not done.
- 41:52And he measured the city with the reed twelve thousand furlongs,
- 41:56its length and its breadth and its height are equal.
- 42:10Fifteen hundred miles.
- 42:15One thousand five hundred miles.
- 42:21Hmm.
- 42:27I don't know about you, but if God's planning on making this on a new heaven
- 42:30and a new earth and it happens to be physical,
- 42:32we're gonna have to have some restructuring of the laws of gravity.
- 42:41And also Elon Musk's satellites are gonna be running into this thing a lot.
- 42:50Fifteen hundred miles tall.
- 42:56And think about the days of John.
- 43:01You think about a city that was impenetrable.
- 43:07What did ~ for all those who enjoy the Lord of the Rings series,
- 43:11what do you have to do to take a fortress?
- 43:18You gotta get over the wall or you gotta get inside the gate.
- 43:25But at every gate there's an angel.
- 43:31What did one angel do in the days of Hezekiah again to the Assyrian army?
- 43:39Hundred and eighty five thousand in one night.
- 43:42Good luck with the gates.
- 43:49But that's okay. Can't get through the gate.
- 43:52We'll get over the wall. Good luck.
- 43:58One thousand five hundred miles tall.
- 44:00That'll be fun.
- 44:04Dad. Yeah. It's quite a ladder.
- 44:09What's God saying?
- 44:16You only get in if I let you in and there's no nation under heaven defeating this.
- 44:25See the pictures of the church.
- 44:26And you say, Aaron, I just need to know what floor I'm on.
- 44:33~ And where's Michael?
- 44:39Michael, you need to work on that elevator.
- 44:41Because those steps are really long.
- 44:43All right. Thank you for your attention.
- 44:45We'll be dismissed. We'll pick up here.
