- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing quicker.
- 0:36Hello and welcome to a Hamster with a Blunt pen Knife, the
- 0:40Doctor Who commentary. My name is Paul Arthur and we
- 0:44are here to talk about invasion of those Part 5 with your own
- 0:48your very own Mr. Joe Ford. Hi, Joe, I say, I say, I say.
- 0:54My T Rex has no nose. Your T Rex has no nose.
- 0:58How does he smell? Terrible.
- 1:01I don't know, how do those jokes end?
- 1:05That like that. Yeah, is that the joke?
- 1:07Yeah, yeah, yeah. We off off Mike, off off the
- 1:12call, guys. We were talking about my secret
- 1:14desire to be a stand up comedian or a performer of some kind.
- 1:18So that that's the joke. And actually I just remembered
- 1:23years and years ago for a fancy and I did a little cartoon of
- 1:27Invasion of the Dinosaurs and it was just John Pertwee with his
- 1:31hands up like he's boxing and then a dinosaurs foot.
- 1:34And then the caption was Queensbury Rules.
- 1:37Oh fabulous. Here we go.
- 1:38Here's a little invasion of the dinosaurs joke for you.
- 1:41That's it. You have to send me the image
- 1:42now. I'll put it out of the episode.
- 1:44Oh mate, that was years ago. I like, you know all of that
- 1:47stuff. Like you know, all of that stuff
- 1:49is in the archive somewhere, so if I could dig it out I'll find
- 1:53it. You said performer there.
- 1:55Are there any songs about dinosaurs?
- 1:58I can't think of any. Walk the dinosaur by was, not
- 2:04was. How does that go?
- 2:06Everybody get on the floor. Everybody walk the dinosaur.
- 2:10Oh, that's quite jolly. Yeah, yeah, It's a catchy little
- 2:13dance tune. You don't know that.
- 2:15I mean Wolfglog T. Rex that don't work.
- 2:21I can't forget. Apart from that I cannot think
- 2:23of any songs. Nope, nothing.
- 2:27That's that's all I got. I shall have to create one.
- 2:30I'll do it throughout the course of the episode.
- 2:32All right. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:33Bung them in. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:35T Rex Perodactyl, Stegosaurus, Triceratops.
- 2:39Triceratops though, that don't work.
- 2:43I'll never be a stand up comedian.
- 2:45Fucking hell. It's when I try.
- 2:47If I just talk something usually not funny but absurd comes out.
- 2:51Whereas when I try and be funny, it's just.
- 2:53Yeah, yeah, you flop. Well, listen, just for for
- 2:56everybody, this is what we're talking about off camera.
- 2:58And this is kind of like what I was sort of talking about how
- 3:01I've kind of enjoyed these these podcasts.
- 3:05You know, I think of myself as being a raconteur, like
- 3:07terrorist sticks, being able to talk my the hind legs off a
- 3:10donkey and and with with wits and, you know, like all of that
- 3:14stuff. That's how I think of myself in
- 3:16my head. You've.
- 3:16Done 5 or 6 episodes. You are poor.
- 3:19It's more, it's more as you say, it's difficult to when you, when
- 3:22you throw me the the odd curveball like like your
- 3:26dinosaur joke there and I have to come up with something off
- 3:28the top of my head. It's it's not always easy mate.
- 3:31We're considering this sort of perhaps rehearsal for the great
- 3:34show that we're going to get one day.
- 3:36All right. That's right, the hamster live
- 3:37show. Jesus Christ, No.
- 3:41Fuckers going to pay for that. Good grief.
- 3:46Well look, we're going to watch Invasion of the Dinosaurs
- 3:48episode 5 today, aren't we? We are.
- 3:51I think this has the best location work since episode 1.
- 3:55Well, it's definitely got that lovely extended chase scene
- 4:01where we've got the doctor through Wimbledon Common being
- 4:04chased by, by the army. I, I, it is great.
- 4:07It does look really, really good.
- 4:09I kind of think that I'd love that if they did that in the
- 4:11city though, Like the, you know, the whole thing of invasion of
- 4:14dinosaurs is it's kind of like that urban, you know, city, you
- 4:17know, city centre location with the dinosaurs in.
- 4:20Wouldn't it be more fun seeing John Poppy zoom in around the
- 4:23streets of London being chased by the army?
- 4:25I don't know. But he does look great.
- 4:27You're right, he does look. Good.
- 4:28Wasn't that episode one? Oh, you mean in the car?
- 4:31Yeah, well, well, if he hopped in the immobile and it was being
- 4:35pursued freely through town, that would be great.
- 4:37But. That's Planet of the Spiders,
- 4:38isn't it? Well, I mean this, this is
- 4:41almost like a little kind of warm up for Planet of the
- 4:43Spiders, isn't it? Almost.
- 4:45Feels like that we're flying. Well, of course we're flying.
- 4:50But I mean, you know, they, I can't remember now.
- 4:53I think I always thought that they'd hired a helicopter and
- 4:57done aerial shots. What I think it is is that is
- 5:00they had footage, that's footage that was available and they
- 5:04found locations to say it's seamless though.
- 5:08Yeah, and it looks proper expensive, didn't it, when you
- 5:10get that big sweeping shot of the the helicopter through the
- 5:13woods. You have the fellow who's there
- 5:15just having his fag and suddenly Dougie Simpson's playing the
- 5:18saxophone while he's doing it, you know?
- 5:23Yeah, he's got. That man post coity or.
- 5:28Something, but we lurk it amongst the ferns.
- 5:32Well, yeah, you know what to say about actors have ever sort of
- 5:37in and out of that amazing warehouse, Yes, where I've
- 5:41recently watched a new Avengers episode where and that is shot
- 5:45on very expensive film. So it lurks Christmas fuck.
- 5:49And and it's also in a couple of Blake 7 episodes as well.
- 5:52So it's a very popular location because it's vast and derelict.
- 5:57Yeah, it was. Moody.
- 5:59It was a very popular location for 70s telly.
- 6:01I think. As you say, it pops up in loads
- 6:03of shows like the New Avengers. It's in like Sweeney and and all
- 6:06those kind of shows. And yeah, it looks looks great.
- 6:10It's a bit of a we're not we haven't even started the episode
- 6:13yet, but we're talking about it. But it's a weird one where the
- 6:16doctor just drives in and drives into that that kind of opening.
- 6:20And then the other, the army just seems past them, kind of a
- 6:24bit of a comedy moment. Well, I'm going to sort of
- 6:26explain to you how buildings work, right?
- 6:28You sort of go in through the exit.
- 6:30Yeah. And then you leave via the
- 6:32entrance. Oh no, I got that the wrong way
- 6:33round, didn't I? You did.
- 6:35I was trying so hard to be patronising and I've just
- 6:37patronised myself. Oh, well, come on.
- 6:39It's a bit of an odd choice. It's an odd choice, I think.
- 6:42I mean, it looks good, so I mean why not?
- 6:44Yeah, well, you know what they say, you've got to in and out of
- 6:47holes. Do they?
- 6:51Yeah, I mean you. You'll be the one for phantom
- 6:53gossip, mate. No, Dylan race.
- 6:55Excuse me? The ultimate gossip.
- 6:58No. Don't you listen to a word.
- 6:59All right? As far as he's concerned,
- 7:01everyone's at it. Well.
- 7:03You and me are asset as far as he's concerned.
- 7:07I, I genuinely assume that everybody's at it apart from me.
- 7:10So that's just. Now look, now come on now,
- 7:16you're through enough. You're putting down your love
- 7:18laugh there. OK?
- 7:21Now shall we go and watch this? Oh yeah, let's get into.
- 7:24It don't say anymore, all right, just in case she listens.
- 7:27You don't want any incriminating evidence on the podcast.
- 7:29Yeah, very much doubt she's going to listen to part 5 of
- 7:32Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Podcast.
- 7:34That would be a surprise. That would be a surprise.
- 7:37Said off camera again. Yeah, I revealed this.
- 7:40This is a six part story. I don't think she's kind of
- 7:43aware that stories can go on that long.
- 7:45I mean, so hello. There's 8 parters, 10 parters,
- 7:4812 parters, I think there's even a 14 parter.
- 7:52There is a 14, but yeah, that I think I mentioned before, that's
- 7:56the one that she was a very long one, yeah.
- 8:00As she seen the second of it. I think I mentioned before she
- 8:03she came in came into the room as I was watching it.
- 8:07That's the same as watching in a non non weave eyes.
- 8:11Exactly. If you ask what's on the telly
- 8:13then and I'd tell you what it is, and you're.
- 8:15I mean, the fact that she remembers the title all these
- 8:17years later is kind of, yeah, proof that she's watched it, I
- 8:20think. Well, Paul, I can only say you
- 8:22are under hamster arrest. Shall we go in?
- 8:27Yes, absolutely. Yes, you are the monster maker.
- 8:30Let's let's. Do it, You'd be grateful I
- 8:32pointed 2 fingers at you, all right?
- 8:33And nothing else. OK.
- 8:39Would you care to count us? Oh no, I've got counters in you
- 8:42Started. Yeah, didn't you?
- 8:43Yeah. Sorry.
- 8:44Yeah, I just take over. It's sad.
- 8:46That's bad habit. Well.
- 8:47It's your podcast mate, so you're more than welcome to.
- 8:50Monstrous egotist in 321. Off we go.
- 8:59Oh my, I'm heading right down the middle of that tunnel, you
- 9:02know? Hypnotic, isn't it?
- 9:05Oh, and he goes John. Perky's eyes look at him.
- 9:08Yeah, Magnificent isn't. He yes, absolutely, you have it.
- 9:13I do love John Perky. I mean, we've done a couple now
- 9:16and he is one of my favourite eras of of the show.
- 9:20I know, not necessarily the most fashionable Dr. to like, but I
- 9:23think he's fantastic. Not the most fashionable, can
- 9:25you see? I mean fabulous frilly shirts.
- 9:27And obviously he's very fashionable, but like, at
- 9:31different times we've been fandom, he's not always been
- 9:33like the most popular. Never mind those people, we
- 9:36don't need to give their the ones that don't like him.
- 9:38Although cunts. Who cares about those people?
- 9:41No, he's great. I mean I think he can do great
- 9:43comedy. I certainly think he can do
- 9:45great drama. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:48And I do like, I'm not adverse to a bit of action from my
- 9:51doctor. I don't want a Doctor Who's
- 9:53going to go around punching people left, right and center.
- 9:55It doesn't have to be a big action hero, but like having
- 9:58that kind of physical dynamism. I, I, I think I would like to
- 10:02see more of that in any, in any doctor I like, certainly like to
- 10:05see more in the, in the modern era.
- 10:07I don't feel you get enough of that.
- 10:08That's plenty of it in the classic.
- 10:09I mean, don't you remember when William Hartnell was taught by
- 10:11the Mountain Mauler of Montana? Oh yeah, I'd, yeah, I would love
- 10:15to see that. I'm AI think I mentioned before,
- 10:17I'm a big wrestling fan, so even the slight mention of wrestling
- 10:20within Dog 2 is exciting and I I couldn't just imagine Hartnell
- 10:26Hartnell in the wrestling. Ring.
- 10:27It tosses that assassin right out of the window.
- 10:30Don't. It it's.
- 10:31So great. And obviously I think of Tom
- 10:33Baker in Cesar Doomy snapping people's necks and also punching
- 10:36people and. What do you do for an encore?
- 10:39Well, what is it? I win, yeah.
- 10:45Look at Sarah playing along now. You know, I think yes, actually
- 10:49take me back to the elders. I've been thinking about things
- 10:51and yeah, see things your way until I expose all this
- 10:55shambles. So we're we're quite, you know,
- 10:58we're already into, into episode 5 and that storyline is still
- 11:01going on. It's still that mystery of of
- 11:03the and we're about to about to come to a head where she escapes
- 11:06and, you know, is actually able to leave.
- 11:09I love that bit where she goes through the airlock and Mark's
- 11:11just incredulous that she. She don't know, does she?
- 11:14What if she was wrong? Well.
- 11:15Exactly, exactly. Up until then, none of us really
- 11:18know, you know that. And that again, is one of those
- 11:21brilliant surprises and the the fact she's got the courage of
- 11:24her own convictions to go hang on.
- 11:26This is bogus. I'm just going to step outside
- 11:28here. It could be instant death, but
- 11:30going to go for it. She's.
- 11:31So brave, isn't she? Amazing, great and this is a
- 11:35great story for her. I've got to say I've been
- 11:37watching the Sarah Jane Adventures recently,
- 11:40commentaries on those, and man, she just didn't lose it when
- 11:44when she took charge of a show. It's back to season 11.
- 11:47Sarah, competent, investigating everything, totally in charge of
- 11:51herself. I think I said before earlier
- 11:56on, I mean, I do love Sarah. I think she's a great companion.
- 11:59I don't think he's necessarily my favorite and I know a lot of
- 12:02people do really love her. But I think where she works
- 12:05really well for me is the season 11 stories like this and the
- 12:08Time Warrior, where she's using her, using her skill and her
- 12:12knowledge and. Look at that great spider, Paul.
- 12:20Do you remember this bit with Benton?
- 12:22Yeah. Come on, use your Venusia UJA on
- 12:24me. I love Benton.
- 12:29I mean, John. This is a great this is a great
- 12:32story for him and this is a great couple of episodes at the
- 12:34end of this story, as you say, like, yeah, yeah, you bet.
- 12:37Use your Venusia Neutra on me. Yeah, just fantastic.
- 12:41He's he's he's really, really good, isn't he?
- 12:42He's good value. He is great and like, I mean,
- 12:46he's never the leading man that John Levine will lead you to
- 12:49believe that he was. In the 70s.
- 12:53And I was lucky enough to play Sergeant Benton, the side
- 12:57character of the era. But the charm you and the jokes
- 13:02you get from him, I mean all that nonsense with the cheese
- 13:05and Day of the Daleks, I love all of that.
- 13:07Yeah, no, he's, he's fantastic. And this, this is great.
- 13:11And of all the people to believe in, the Doctor is good old
- 13:14Benson, who just like sees through the crap straight away.
- 13:17The Brigadier. We don't know what is going on
- 13:19with the Brigadier at this point.
- 13:20We mentioned before like he's he seems to be going along with
- 13:23Finch. So yeah, for for Benton to be
- 13:26the one to go. Yeah.
- 13:27OK, I'm going to let you go. He did that fall brilliantly
- 13:31down on his knees and then face palms.
- 13:34What This is why I think this episode is actually really
- 13:36interesting, right? Because it is a lot of padding.
- 13:41We've got this long extended chase scene that comes up sort
- 13:44of fairly soon. We've got Sarah Beer escaping
- 13:47and then being captured again. And so it's a lot of the normal,
- 13:51traditional run around kind of padding.
- 13:53But actually it it still feeds into the episode because you're
- 13:56still like, you're not sure still if there aren't any more
- 13:59surprises coming down the line. You don't know if the Brigadier
- 14:02might be involved because suddenly he's not standing up
- 14:05for our guy. He's not standing up for his
- 14:07hero. So maybe he's involved.
- 14:09And it's nice that you've got good old Benton there to go.
- 14:12All right, OK, He's, he's, you know.
- 14:14It's not until the Brigadier stands up to Finch.
- 14:17Yes, they're. Pointing guns at each other on
- 14:19the street that you think, Oh yeah, all right.
- 14:22Yeah, absolutely. This is a great effect.
- 14:24I love it. It's so simple.
- 14:26It's just him smashing a cup and then them reversing it.
- 14:29Yeah, but it gets the point across.
- 14:31I think you really need to be economical visually for
- 14:35children, and it just gets the idea of rolling back time, yeah.
- 14:39It is it is very simple. I think something like city of
- 14:42death maybe does it a little bit more exciting with the chicken,
- 14:44the enemy chickens going. That's really exciting.
- 14:48But yeah, you're right. I mean, it is the A is a quite a
- 14:51big concept. The idea to kind of physically
- 14:52rolling back time. So you're right.
- 14:54So selling kids on on the the big ideas in a simple way like
- 14:58that is really good. So hang on a minute, I'm trying
- 15:02to figure out the whole plan here.
- 15:03So the idea of bringing the dinosaurs, was that just purely
- 15:08to evacuate London? Yeah, yeah, I guess they didn't
- 15:11want to take everybody in London with them.
- 15:12They were they going to I guess they're going to actually.
- 15:16Is that. Yeah, you're right.
- 15:17It's not fully. Is it the whole?
- 15:18Of London they're taking. Well, he they talk about the
- 15:22zone and they talk about the the fringe of the zone and where the
- 15:24where the unit based being maybe inside, maybe not inside.
- 15:28So a good chunk of. I mean, that's one time poll
- 15:30where I wish we could see with the sort of the Disney budget.
- 15:34I'd love to see prehistoric Earth with just a bit of London
- 15:38slapped down on top of it. Yeah, you're right.
- 15:41That would be a fantastic official.
- 15:43And yeah, this story has got brilliant ideas and it's always
- 15:47the best. The visuals are the things that
- 15:49you know the effect. They go somewhere, right?
- 15:52They go somewhere. There's a lot of locations.
- 15:54And they really do. And a lot of.
- 15:56People in this like, there's money on the screen, I think,
- 15:58yeah. You're right, You're right.
- 15:59You're right. It's quite a big cast, isn't it?
- 16:01So, and a lot of really good actors in it.
- 16:03So yeah, all of that's expensive.
- 16:04Like a wall of good Doctor Who is ambitious.
- 16:09Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 16:10Yeah, I mean because not. Letting that budget hold back
- 16:13their ambition. You know, we talked about the
- 16:15sophistication of Hulks script and like, you know, if Barry
- 16:19Letts comes to you and says, oh, can we have dinosaurs, the
- 16:22temptation is just to make any old kind of dinosaur story.
- 16:25You could make it as simple as you want.
- 16:27It really could be just as straightforward as dinosaurs are
- 16:29just running around. But there's so much more to this
- 16:33because they want it. You know, Hog can't tell her a
- 16:36boring story. He's got to make it more and
- 16:38more interesting. And he's got 6 episodes to play
- 16:41about with so. Right.
- 16:42He's got plenty of time, yeah. To do what he does.
- 16:44Yeah. You know, I think in the right
- 16:46light, Sarah and Mark be quite a nice couple actually.
- 16:50Yeah, yeah. Journalist and the team.
- 16:52Denim winning athlete. Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:57And you mentioned about Mark's tight trousers, but you know, I
- 17:00think Sarah looks quite. They are both wearing one size
- 17:04too small. Yeah, but she ain't got nothing
- 17:06to hide down there, whereas he does.
- 17:10Oh, look, look at this. I like how it's night time.
- 17:12It's all they put black drapes in front of the windows.
- 17:14Yes, yeah, yeah. Oh no.
- 17:16You can still see the street even for in with the blind see.
- 17:20The painted, yeah, painted bedroom.
- 17:21Yeah, well done that set designer.
- 17:23Yeah. Oh, yeah, He goes, right.
- 17:26So he comes to Finch, the Brigadier.
- 17:28We're going to find him at any possibility.
- 17:30The second he's gone, he comes to Benton, right?
- 17:32Where is he? We can't.
- 17:33Find him quick. Yeah, Yeah.
- 17:36You know that that Brigadier is actually, and we're like quite,
- 17:39you know, quite a few minutes in like nearly almost 10 minutes in
- 17:42and you suddenly you kind of know, OK, the Brigadier is, is
- 17:45still on it on our side. Come on Sarah, tell him she
- 17:49goes. Come on now.
- 17:50And the the nearest star system is 4 light years away, for God's
- 17:53sakes. We.
- 17:54This is so. She's so great.
- 17:56I mean, like, I would eat my words because I've said that I
- 18:00don't, you know, she's not my favorite, but she's so great in
- 18:03bits like this where she's really struggling to convince
- 18:06him that what he believes is not true.
- 18:09You know, she's. Yeah.
- 18:11And the coming out of the airlock here, like we said,
- 18:15that's exciting, isn't it? Like the fact that she could be
- 18:18killing life or he knows she's completely dead.
- 18:21Now go out there and watch, she says.
- 18:23Oh my God, goes I'm about to watch a woman murderer.
- 18:26Right. I mean, it is very similar,
- 18:31right? And I know the story is
- 18:32completely different, but it is very similar to The Enemy of the
- 18:35World. Isn't it introducing a load of
- 18:37people underground? Yeah, yeah, in.
- 18:38Episode 4. Yeah, yeah, that's very true.
- 18:41And yeah, I hadn't really thought about that before, but
- 18:42yeah, they are very, very similar.
- 18:44And in both cases, you kind of think how how much of A head
- 18:47fuck that must be for those people being in that situation
- 18:50where you kind of, you know, you, you think you're in one
- 18:54place, but actually your life is not where you think it is at
- 18:57all. What's more feasible, duping
- 18:59people into thinking there's been natural disasters, nuclear
- 19:02world up there and so they're down in the basement or
- 19:05convincing people that they're in a spaceship on the way to
- 19:08another planet? Probably the first one I would
- 19:10imagine. Well, you guess so, but then,
- 19:13you know, and I think, again, that's something that people
- 19:16will hold up to this episode as they like.
- 19:18How can they? How can people think that they
- 19:20would be in a spaceship? But we've seen a space program,
- 19:23K space programme in the per the years.
- 19:25So we know that the technology is more advanced in our world.
- 19:30We know that they have got spaceships.
- 19:33They Oh my God, it was the same episode.
- 19:35This is literally everywhere where they shot that gas
- 19:38cylinder where Pert we just drove along.
- 19:40It was all in that right. But where this has I can't
- 19:45explain it. I don't know if they don't have
- 19:47the original prints where this has that sort of fuzzy film
- 19:50look. The film work on The Avengers is
- 19:52so crisp. Right.
- 19:55Like I just, I just think it's it's made more expensively than
- 19:58this. And of course.
- 20:00It was. Would that be the just the
- 20:01quality of the international print?
- 20:04I don't know. I'm not an expert.
- 20:05I mean, they cleaned them up, it was £100 for two seasons, that's
- 20:09it. So they cleaned them up
- 20:10impeccably. Yeah.
- 20:12And yeah, you'd hope so for that money.
- 20:14They just throw the Doctor Who's for an AI filter these days.
- 20:17Sorry, whoops, a Daisy. But it's a fabulous location to
- 20:21shoot all this action around. And very quintessentially 70s as
- 20:26well, where, like, everything's a little bit rundown and, you
- 20:29know, falling apart. And we and Britain's still kind
- 20:32of on its knees in many ways. You know, like, a lot of stuff
- 20:35hadn't been rebuilt following the war.
- 20:38So yeah, you know, it feels really real and kind of gritty.
- 20:41I love how they set up earlier in the story they had that scene
- 20:46with Sarah and Finch specifically him helping her so
- 20:49she thinks he's on side with her.
- 20:51Yes. So when she goes up now it goes.
- 20:54Ohh General Finns, thank God I found you.
- 20:57That's what that's what I mean. I think I do think I mean there
- 21:00is a is padding really is is traditional classic who padding
- 21:04where you escape and you get caught again.
- 21:07But it works so well in this story because it is that like,
- 21:11you know, we know who the bad guys are.
- 21:13We've it's been, they've been revealed to us.
- 21:14But as you say, not everybody knows who who's doing what at
- 21:18this point. We haven't got to the point
- 21:20where everybody knows who all the players are and what they're
- 21:23doing. So, yeah, you're right.
- 21:25When she was seeing Finnish takes the backs of the cabinet
- 21:28and she's like, oh boy, I really picked my friends that, you
- 21:31know, it's a real it. It works for the episode.
- 21:34But we say it's padding, right? Yeah.
- 21:36And that's what you say when you watch the whole story, right, is
- 21:39that you've got moments where there's lots of plot and moments
- 21:42where there's lots of running, running around, right?
- 21:45Nobody was watching the whole story at the time.
- 21:47You had 25 minutes of Doctor Who.
- 21:49And if this was your 25 minutes, you've got a fabulous action
- 21:53sequence with the Doctor on the run.
- 21:55You've got Sarah Jane, you know, going out that air log and then
- 21:58hiding around the tunnels, getting out, being captured
- 22:01again for 25 minutes a week. You've just got a load of
- 22:04suspense and excitement. And I think that's all they're
- 22:07trying to do here. Oh, 100%.
- 22:09But actually best to say, I think this is an example where
- 22:12it does work really well because it leans into that idea of who
- 22:16do we trust and, and, and who is on on the level in this, in this
- 22:20story. But like, you're totally right.
- 22:22I mean, the the problem with watching it, the way we watch it
- 22:27as fans. And, and so when, well, when I
- 22:31first became a fan and I was getting borrowing tapes and
- 22:35then, you know, from, from friends and then I was, you
- 22:38know, buying VHSS and stuff, you'd sit there and you'd watch
- 22:41the whole thing. And, and young you're younger in
- 22:44those days or I certainly I was younger in those days.
- 22:47I could probably sit down and watch pretty much most of the
- 22:49war games if you know, if on a given day if I wanted to I.
- 22:53Wouldn't advise it but. I wouldn't know.
- 22:55I wouldn't recommend either, but but The thing is that's we we
- 22:58were binge watching stuff before binge watching was a thing.
- 23:03And so you're right, it's never been designed that way.
- 23:06Imagine. Being that person, that kid
- 23:08waiting for just 24 1/2 minutes of blissful Doctor Who every
- 23:14Saturday night, literally having to get through the whole tedious
- 23:17week of. School.
- 23:19And fish fingers and all that other nonsense you have to put
- 23:22up with when you're a kid and, I don't know, trips to the
- 23:25countryside and then by God, Doctor Who's coming on and look,
- 23:29there's helicopters flying around.
- 23:31Yeah. I mean, that man's smoking, for
- 23:33God's sakes, you know? Oh my God.
- 23:35I mean, if you're, if you're a big fan of the Dinos, then you
- 23:38might be missing them in this episode because they don't
- 23:40really. Worry you wait for the climax.
- 23:43Well, we get we get them right at the very end, but but there's
- 23:46like for a story called Invasion of the Dinosaurs, this episode
- 23:49is quite dinosaur light. Idiot.
- 23:51Then the tripod was like that. You know, it was called the
- 23:53Tripods, but they were only in about two seconds of each
- 23:56episode episode and that's about.
- 23:57As long as I watched it for, I think so.
- 24:00Very boring, wasn't it? Yeah, but but we machine.
- 24:04Gun. What you have got here is like
- 24:06it's an exciting chase through the woods.
- 24:09You've got helicopter stock footage, you've got per We like
- 24:13looming through the ferns. You've got Pawnee jazz music
- 24:16playing from Dudley. I mean, yeah, I like it.
- 24:19When the drums come in, it goes. It is a weird mix of the cloak
- 24:23and dagger sax music with with a military drum, isn't it?
- 24:26It's kind of kind of a bit weird.
- 24:29You can always count on Dudley to be eccentric.
- 24:33But that shot John there, and like lurking in the trees, he
- 24:36looks. Brilliant.
- 24:37Oh man, look at that. Lurking and it's big cloak and
- 24:40everything. Yeah, the wheels of the mother
- 24:42hen. Isn't that what he said?
- 24:44Yeah, Look, thanks for hiding in the ferns, right?
- 24:47I'm going to make my move. How does he get out of this?
- 24:51I can't remember now. Does he nick the car?
- 24:53He Nicks the Jeep and does a company accent, doesn't he?
- 24:57I'm bringing him in, yeah. Right.
- 24:59We got action perk we and then we got comedy perk we all in the
- 25:02same episode. So yeah, brilliant.
- 25:04I can never object to this amount of location work.
- 25:07But look at this. Great.
- 25:08Yeah, I mean, the direction here is fantastic, isn't it?
- 25:11Isn't really. Really good.
- 25:12Well, because you there, that's a POV shop where you're the one
- 25:15being haunted. Exactly.
- 25:16Yeah, yeah. You know, again, I'm just like
- 25:19she's I'm 45. I'm imagining being six years
- 25:22old watching this. Right.
- 25:24The helicopter zooming about the place.
- 25:26As you say, that stock footage works so well, doesn't it?
- 25:29I do miss, I think. I do think it would be great if
- 25:33they were able to do it in the sea.
- 25:34But I totally appreciate what that stock footage gives you.
- 25:38It just makes this whole chase feel really, really big.
- 25:41Yeah. And I think, like I said before,
- 25:43like it's really unusual for the Doctor.
- 25:45This makes me think of something like Spear from Space, where
- 25:47the, you know, the very beginning of the put the era
- 25:48where he's kind of on the run from, or he's being searched for
- 25:51by the Army. He's kind of giving me those
- 25:52vibes. You know, I've seen him on the
- 25:54run. Inferno right where he's being
- 25:56hunted down in. Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 26:00Oh here it goes T1 to patrol when he like over.
- 26:03Go on, do your best cockney. Hello, T1 patrol here.
- 26:07Little what we got him. Bring him in now, Governor.
- 26:12He should wave as he goes past. Latest boys enjoy your fag.
- 26:15And we get a bit more of the dubs gun on from the guy as he
- 26:20comes by here. He comes back to his Jeep.
- 26:22That that stock footage is seamless.
- 26:25So I mean to the point where until I was told, I thought it
- 26:29was short for this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 26:32absolutely. Yeah.
- 26:33And because the era is full of helicopters, So what?
- 26:36I wouldn't have got a helicopter for this.
- 26:37But then you look at those shots and you're going bloody hell,
- 26:39they've really got the most out of the helicopter this week.
- 26:42Passion. You're that shoulder.
- 26:43Oh bugger it. How am I going to explain this?
- 26:47I think just going to court Marshall me.
- 26:49Were you having a cigarette again?
- 26:51No, I promise. I just needed a wee.
- 26:53I want to piss something against.
- 26:55The tree. Oh, this man's great.
- 26:58Oh yeah, yeah, I love his Bryson.
- 27:02Something like that, yeah. Is he the one that makes the tea
- 27:04in the next episode? Knocks out of his hands.
- 27:07Paul Sword, I think the actor is called Colin Bell.
- 27:10I think this is a lovely little performance from him.
- 27:11I think he's really, really good.
- 27:14Sarah, just don't trust General Finch, all right?
- 27:18Come on. Do you know, obviously they've
- 27:23erected these sets every week. I think there might be different
- 27:25pictures on the wall there from last time.
- 27:27Yeah, but that's that's why actually, I was going to say
- 27:29that's what you get in school, but the kids aren't there, are
- 27:31they? So no, it wouldn't be what you
- 27:33get. Is that the map with the pins in
- 27:35it for your actual pterodactyls over there?
- 27:37Yes, yeah, pink for your actual pterodactyls.
- 27:40No pink. Oh, pink of course.
- 27:42You've got a colour coded Dinos. Yeah.
- 27:45Oh, I love this. Oh, I missed the line.
- 27:47She goes. You make sure he gets it.
- 27:49Yeah. Points the pencil at him, Miss
- 27:53Smith says. I love, I love her reaction when
- 27:55she sees him come in. She thinks I was a friend.
- 27:57This is the guy who helped me out before with the pass.
- 27:59And yeah, I'm going to get somewhere now.
- 28:02I think she is naive. When he goes, will you take me
- 28:05down there and let's see. Come on now.
- 28:08I'll be like, really? I ain't going down there again.
- 28:12You take the army down there, I'll say.
- 28:14It right. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:15But of course we need it for the plot.
- 28:18Of course, yeah. But as you say, like, you know,
- 28:22it's a 25 minute episode and you're watching it in isolation
- 28:25if you're watching on a weekly basis.
- 28:28So yeah, you know, you, you, you need that, the story to do
- 28:31certain things. So yeah, absolutely.
- 28:33She's going to get captured again.
- 28:35He's quite a distinguished older man, You know John Bennett?
- 28:38Yeah, Quite handsome. I could see Sarah going on a
- 28:41date with him. If, well, yeah, not my not my
- 28:46cup of tea. Bash and not Paul?
- 28:48No, being a heterosexual man. But I suppose they do say about
- 28:55men in uniform. I suppose so.
- 28:57Yeah, I guess it happened to you, right?
- 28:59You're 4IN. And look, you're on the turn,
- 29:05OK? Right now they're going off
- 29:06together. They're going down, aren't they?
- 29:09Oh, sorry. OK, I'll stop.
- 29:10Oh, you. Oh.
- 29:11Come on, Joe. That was cheap, wasn't it?
- 29:14It was you think this is all finishes excuse to get rid of
- 29:17filing cabinet room? Yeah, come on, get in there,
- 29:20Sarah. I like a bit of denim.
- 29:21Yeah. Would you love the double denim?
- 29:23Yeah. Enormous collar as well.
- 29:27Very, very 70s space gear. And also as well, he's just so
- 29:33cash. She goes, oh, so you say you
- 29:36came in here OK, and it went down.
- 29:39I'll be like he's taking this in his stride.
- 29:42He does have a quite a good line in in sincerity, doesn't he?
- 29:46Like, you know, he's very in the earlier episodes, he's acting
- 29:50quite suspicious, but at the same time he's kind of like in
- 29:53that scene where he's giving her the pass and now he's got quite
- 29:56an easy charm about him. So yeah, maybe, maybe I can see
- 29:58them to those two together. I don't use the word bump enough
- 30:02in Doctor Who, you know, he just said, what is all this bump?
- 30:06No, I mean, I think there definitely should be more bump
- 30:09I'll. Beg your pardon?
- 30:14One thing I might, maybe wouldn't have done now that
- 30:16she's seen the truth. I might not have put her back in
- 30:19with all those people. I might have just kept her in
- 30:21that room with all the lights. Yeah, you're right.
- 30:23I mean, you would just kill her at this point, wouldn't you?
- 30:25But I mean, that's, but that's, you know, adventure drama all
- 30:29around. I mean, if, if every story had
- 30:32the villain just go OK, I'll just kill you now, that would be
- 30:34much easier for my plans than most stories wouldn't get
- 30:38written, would they? I'd have a wonderful scene where
- 30:41they say to Yates, right, we want you to prove how you're
- 30:45really on our side and kill Sarah Jane Smith.
- 30:48Now, that would be quite juicy, wouldn't it?
- 30:50Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:51Because he. Yeah, he isn't tested so much in
- 30:53these last episodes. Does he know?
- 30:54She doesn't know about Yates, does she?
- 30:58At. This point, she only knows about
- 31:00Grover and now Finch because of because of this.
- 31:02Yeah. It's a wonderful scene, though,
- 31:04when he does pull his gum. Yates Yeah.
- 31:07And they can't believe it, can they?
- 31:09And Benton goes, oh, come on. Right, right, right.
- 31:14Yeah. And then when Bryston, the the
- 31:16private comes in with the T and like he's, you know, he's like,
- 31:20Oh yeah, I didn't see you back, Captain Yates.
- 31:21And then like, you know, the T goes flying and Benton goes like
- 31:25rushing into it's a rabbit. Scene.
- 31:28Isn't it is? That 6.
- 31:29I think they they saved that for six, don't they?
- 31:32Yes, yeah, that's The thing is like, you know what we, as I
- 31:34say, we by this point we know who everybody is and who's,
- 31:38who's on the side of the baddies.
- 31:40But like, yeah, bit by bit they and that's what I think this
- 31:43episode actually works really, really well because it's not
- 31:46necessarily advancing the, the, the, the kind of all, the, all
- 31:50the pieces. They're not being pushed forward
- 31:52anywhere anymore. But it's that kind of like, who
- 31:55do you trust? You know who's who is in on
- 31:58this. And here we are right at the end
- 32:00of the episode. We're getting the dinosaurs
- 32:02back. Grief.
- 32:05It's Triceratops and a brontosaurus.
- 32:09Oh no, look at that painted backdrop.
- 32:11Did you see a big pen they can't afford to do the dioramas for?
- 32:15All. And here we go.
- 32:16Here's our boy. Oh.
- 32:17Look at his limp wrists. Go on.
- 32:20He's waggling them, apparently. That's sort of how I walk down
- 32:24the street, you know? Oh, Ducky, where have I found
- 32:29myself? Oh, I love that.
- 32:32Look at that little traffic crossing in the middle.
- 32:34Fabulous. Yeah.
- 32:37And I think this shot works. It's great with the the T Rex
- 32:40appearing outside the the station here at the very end.
- 32:43My great. But look at his jaws.
- 32:47Because it so it ends on the dinosaurs again, but it's but
- 32:50it's like not not a repeat of the same cliffhangers.
- 32:53It's you know, it's doing something new and it's taking us
- 32:56to that final chapter. Where is the big the big
- 33:00encounter? He is absolutely determined to
- 33:03have a bit of John Perkwee in his mouth before the end of this
- 33:05story, isn't he? That Oh.
- 33:07Oh, T Rex, Yeah, yeah, he's. Tried like 4 Times Now and it's.
- 33:11Yeah, and he's, he's gonna be foiled again at the start of the
- 33:14next episode. He.
- 33:15Should have a polite word with him.
- 33:16Go look, Doc. So it's getting a bit
- 33:17embarrassing now. I keep going back to prehistoric
- 33:20times and I haven't eaten you despite the fact you've been
- 33:22right in front of me. I mean, one time you made me go
- 33:24to sleep. Please let me eat you well for
- 33:30your honor, Mr. T Rex. Or have a nibble.
