- 0:00KARA: Hi.
- 0:01DANI: Hi.
- 0:01DANI: Wow.
- 0:02Last episode.
- 0:03KARA: I really cannot believe it.
- 0:05DANI: That's so many that we've done.
- 0:07KARA: Episode 30.
- 0:08DANI: 30.
- 0:08KARA: 30 episodes.
- 0:09DANI: That means we've done 31 'cause we did a bonus episode.
- 0:12KARA: Oh my God, yeah, that's true.
- 0:14DANI: Wow.
- 0:15KARA: Wow.
- 0:15All worth it, though.
- 0:16Yeah.
- 0:16It's been fun.
- 0:17I've been enjoying this journey.
- 0:19DANI: I know.
- 0:19Can't wait for season two.
- 0:21KARA: What's up with us?
- 0:22Fantastic news.
- 0:23I have new cochlear implants.
- 0:24DANI: Oh my God, guys.
- 0:26It only took-
- 0:27KARA: Like two years.
- 0:28DANI: It only took us recording 30 episodes for,
- 0:31for this saga to be complete.
- 0:34KARA: Literally.
- 0:34I'm wearing them right now.
- 0:35They work fine.
- 0:36They work great.
- 0:37DANI: Do you notice any difference?
- 0:38KARA: No.
- 0:39Which I knew coming in.
- 0:40DANI: Were they just like we're updating… Is it like when Apple's
- 0:43new iPhone, and it's the same iPhone?
- 0:45KARA: Yeah.
- 0:46Well, the old ones were glitchy anyway.
- 0:48Okay.
- 0:48They kept turning on and off.
- 0:49Like if I hit them just so-
- 0:52DANI: They
- 0:52KARA: would turn off … they would glitch.
- 0:53Yeah, which-
- 0:53DANI: Okay.
- 0:53Well, so then that's an improvement, right?
- 0:55KARA: This is very much an improvement, and also I notice the Bluetooth for
- 0:59these new implants are really good.
- 1:01DANI: Ooh.
- 1:01KARA: They connect instantly.
- 1:02DANI: That's really nice.
- 1:03KARA: It doesn't take as long.
- 1:03Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04So that I'm really content with.
- 1:06And I like the color.
- 1:08It's all brown now, and smaller.
- 1:10DANI: Yeah, they really blend in.
- 1:12KARA: So I'm enjoying that.
- 1:14I like the look.
- 1:15It's nice and sleek and cute.
- 1:16DANI: Do they make them in fun colors?
- 1:18KARA: No, they only do boring colors.
- 1:20They do black, brown, tan, white.
- 1:23I think that's it.
- 1:24DANI: I'm just thinking 'cause you have a lot of jewelry on your ear already-
- 1:27KARA: Yeah.
- 1:28DANI: So, like, it'd be fun if you, if you could color coordinate.
- 1:31Obviously, it's a piece of medical equipment, so it's not, like, fun.
- 1:34KARA: But- Well, what I used to do is- I think my mom found them on Etsy
- 1:38or something, but I used to have fun stickers I could put on my implants.
- 1:41DANI: That's cute.
- 1:42KARA: So I had, like… I remember going to a football game.
- 1:44My mom gave me, like, football stickers to put on.
- 1:47DANI: That's so cute.
- 1:48KARA: Or soccer or-
- 1:49DANI: Yeah.
- 1:50KARA: Candy ones.
- 1:51DANI: Yeah.
- 1:52KARA: It's easier to do, like, hearing aid accessories 'cause… How do I explain it?
- 1:56Like, if you had the mold in your ear with the tube coming out, you can,
- 1:59like, dangle things off the tube.
- 2:00DANI: Yeah.
- 2:01But with this wire, would that be bad?
- 2:04KARA: Well, it's right next to my processor, so I would just
- 2:07hear it dangling constantly.
- 2:09DANI: Oh, so true.
- 2:09KARA: It would annoy the hell out of me.
- 2:11DANI: Yeah.
- 2:11KARA: Yeah, 'cause the processor is right on top of the wire, so
- 2:14if I had something here, I would just constantly hear it rustling.
- 2:18Yeah.
- 2:18There is a company,
- 2:21a deaf-owned company though which, whose name is escaping me, but they do
- 2:25create, like, cochlear implant and hearing aid jewelry that you can put on them.
- 2:30DANI: Very cool.
- 2:31KARA: Yeah.
- 2:31But it's more, like, ear cuffs or just any jewelry you can put on
- 2:35your ears that don't get in the way.
- 2:36DANI: Mm, yeah, 'cause I imagine that would be quite annoying.
- 2:39That's part of the reason I don't have any ear piercings, is I have so many sensory-
- 2:42KARA: 'Cause of your hearing aids?
- 2:43DANI: I have so many sensory issues.
- 2:45KARA: Sure.
- 2:46DANI: It looks so pretty to have a lot of jewelry on your ear, but I think, for
- 2:50me, I would feel all of it all the time.
- 2:53KARA: The biggest obstacle is if you have implants and hearing aids plus glasses.
- 2:57DANI: Oh, God.
- 2:57KARA: Cause that's so much shit on your ears.
- 2:59DANI: So much stuff on your ear.
- 3:00KARA: My biggest fear is I'll need glasses.
- 3:02DANI: Yeah.
- 3:02If I'm wearing, like, a mask on the subway and sunglasses and-
- 3:06KARA: They would fall off.
- 3:07DANI: My, my headphones are ear clippy ones.
- 3:10They clip around my ear.
- 3:11KARA: Sure.
- 3:12DANI: 'Cause the, because of my sensory issues, AirPods really hurt my ears.
- 3:16So they, like, clip on the outside of my ear, and just having three
- 3:19things, I'm like, "Oh my god."
- 3:21KARA: Ah.
- 3:21DANI: Yeah.
- 3:21KARA: Yeah, that's true.
- 3:22The mask was a lot.
- 3:24DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 3:24KARA: With the hear- with my implants, too.
- 3:26DANI: Yeah.
- 3:27How?
- 3:28That wouldn't have been good.
- 3:29Did you do the, like, around the head one?
- 3:31I feel like that would be easier back in the day.
- 3:33KARA: I did have those sometimes, but usually I just got, like,
- 3:36the normal medical mask.
- 3:38DANI: Yeah.
- 3:38KARA: And I wore them, and it was for public safety, so.
- 3:41DANI: Right.
- 3:41KARA: I sucked it up.
- 3:42DANI: It just, like… I feel like-
- 3:43KARA: But yeah, I would get-
- 3:44DANI: it would mess with the-
- 3:46KARA: Yeah, the scars behind the ear where they actually do
- 3:48the incision for the surgery.
- 3:49So sometimes it would irritate the scar.
- 3:51DANI: Yeah.
- 3:52That's no fun.
- 3:53KARA: Yeah.
- 3:53DANI: Well, shout-out to vaccines.
- 3:55KARA: Shout-out to vaccines.
- 3:56Really big fan of those.
- 3:57DANI: I mean, COVID's still around and a big problem, but the vaccines have helped.
- 4:01KARA: And you should be getting your boosters, guys.
- 4:02DANI: Yeah, get your booster.
- 4:04KARA: We should talk about Elephant Shoes.
- 4:06DANI: Oh my God, we gotta talk about Elephant Shoes.
- 4:08KARA: Yeah.
- 4:09DANI: You guys, we had the best time.
- 4:11KARA: Yeah.
- 4:12DANI: I cried, I laughed.
- 4:14KARA: What is Elephant Shoes?
- 4:15DANI: It's Deaf West's first original musical.
- 4:19So Deaf West famously did the really popular revival of Spring Awakening.
- 4:24KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 4:25DANI: So good, which I had the pleasure of seeing when it was still in a small
- 4:29space before it went to Broadway.
- 4:30And then they've also done American Idiot.
- 4:34KARA: They did that last year, yeah.
- 4:36They did Pippin.
- 4:36DANI: They did Pippin, which I also had the privilege of seeing.
- 4:40But this is their first original.
- 4:42KARA: Yeah, it's not on Broadway yet.
- 4:44DANI: No, they're, they're clearly doing a soft test, so they were
- 4:47performing at Two River Theater in New Jersey, which was a great theater.
- 4:50I would love to go back there.
- 4:51Beautiful theater.
- 4:52KARA: Yeah.
- 4:52DANI: Beautiful, super intimate.
- 4:54KARA: Yeah, it was beautiful.
- 4:55Daniel Durant was the lead.
- 4:57It was in ASL and English, and it had really cool, innovative, dynamic captions.
- 5:03DANI: Yeah.
- 5:04KARA: And apparently this is, I believe it's the most expensive
- 5:06production Two River Theater has ever done, and you can tell they put
- 5:10so much work and thought into it.
- 5:12DANI: Yeah, and the set design was also beautiful.
- 5:15KARA: Amazing.
- 5:16DANI: It was so interesting.
- 5:18I also just like, I was a little bit nervous about like a rom-com
- 5:22musical, and I feel like they did… They struck a really nice balance
- 5:28of like, I was actually laughing.
- 5:30There were some corny things.
- 5:32Every musical's gonna be a little corny.
- 5:33KARA: Yeah.
- 5:34DANI: Even the corny stuff I enjoyed, and I was crying a lot, like really
- 5:39great actual emotional scenes in it.
- 5:41Also, the guy that played the hot guy, so hot.
- 5:45KARA: He's so hot.
- 5:45DANI: He was in Evita on the West End, 'cause-
- 5:48KARA: Good for him.
- 5:49DANI: I texted Milena to be like, "That guy was so hot.
- 5:51He was saying hi to people after the show.
- 5:53I couldn't even go up to him 'cause he was so beautiful in person."
- 5:56KARA: I know.
- 5:57DANI: And she looked him up on Instagram, and she was like, "Oh, yeah,
- 6:00he played the really hot husband in Evita- Wow … with Rachel Ziegler."
- 6:04KARA: That's awesome.
- 6:05Yeah, it's a great love triangle story.
- 6:08Very fresh, very new take.
- 6:09DANI: Some of the songs really banged.
- 6:11KARA: Yeah, I like some of the songs.
- 6:13I love the set design.
- 6:14I love the captions, and I love the acting and the signing.
- 6:18Yeah.
- 6:18Yeah, 10 out of 10.
- 6:20DANI: Yeah, I think one thing that… And it's not Deaf West's fault at all,
- 6:24it's like just a misconception, but I feel like whenever I tell people
- 6:27about Deaf West shows, they're like, "Well, I don't know sign language."
- 6:31And I'm like, "No, that's what's beautiful is you don't need to know sign language."
- 6:35KARA: You don't.
- 6:35DANI: They had… All of the signing was either… They, they worked an
- 6:39interpreter plot line into the plot.
- 6:42KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 6:42DANI: So there were interpreters on stage who were characters actively in the show.
- 6:46KARA: Yes.
- 6:47DANI: And so all the signing was either interpreted or captioned or, like,
- 6:52really contextual, made complete sense.
- 6:55KARA: Yes, exactly.
- 6:57DANI: And then all of the speaking conversations were live captioned.
- 7:01KARA: Yes.
- 7:02DANI: Like above their heads, and dynamic captions, which was really cool.
- 7:05KARA: So cool.
- 7:06I loved it.
- 7:07Yeah, the only-
- 7:07DANI: And there was a lot of texting.
- 7:08There was a lot of, like, texting communication happening.
- 7:11KARA: Yeah, and they would show, like, the texting on the screen.
- 7:12DANI: On the screen, yeah.
- 7:14KARA: Which was helpful.
- 7:15Yeah, I was talking to a Deaf friend of mine after, and this is after you
- 7:19already left, but he was like, "I loved it. My one complaint is that I
- 7:23wish they had captions the full time."
- 7:25DANI: Right.
- 7:25For people who don't sign.
- 7:28KARA: For people who don't sign, but he was like, "I also just wanted to see how
- 7:31they would translate the ASL to English."
- 7:34DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 7:35KARA: And I, and I… Yeah, I wanted to see that, and I wanted
- 7:38captions on the stage the whole time.
- 7:41Yeah.
- 7:42DANI: Do you agree with that?
- 7:43KARA: I think I do.
- 7:44DANI: Okay.
- 7:45KARA: But I also just really liked how creative the use of the captions was.
- 7:48Like, it was on, like, a billboard setting, and then they also had, like,
- 7:53these see-through screens where captions-
- 7:55DANI: Yeah.
- 7:55KARA: Would come up.
- 7:55DANI: The screen was really cool.
- 7:57KARA: Yeah, it was kinda, like, projected, but it didn't look like it was projected.
- 8:00DANI: Yes, it looked like the words were floating in air-
- 8:03KARA: Yeah, it was beautiful.
- 8:05DANI: Kind of above their heads.
- 8:05And I think that… I would hope… I think there was a question
- 8:07about this in the talk back.
- 8:09Like, I… That is such an innovative piece of tech.
- 8:12Why can't we have that?
- 8:13KARA: I think it was… I think the point was I think this is
- 8:16the first time they've done this.
- 8:17DANI: Yes, but, like, the point I'm making is looking at… I'm really
- 8:21hoping this makes a Broadway transfer, and it opens up a conversation of
- 8:25people saying, "Hey, I would love to know what the fuck they're saying."
- 8:29'Cause, like, okay, for instance, a lot of shows… I've seen Lost Boys now twice,
- 8:34and I had a better time the second time hearing the actual lyrics in the songs.
- 8:39KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 8:39DANI: But this has been a consistent complaint of mine, is that especially
- 8:42if you're sitting in a poorly sound-balanced area in the theater-
- 8:47You just, if, if the show doesn't have a cast recording out when you're
- 8:51hearing those songs for the first time, I'm missing whole chunks of story.
- 8:56KARA: Yeah, for sure.
- 8:57DANI: It would be really cool to have captions on a screen like
- 9:01that, even if it's just, like, at the very top of the theater.
- 9:05KARA: Like they do in opera.
- 9:06DANI: Yes.
- 9:06KARA: Like I've been saying.
- 9:07DANI: Yes.
- 9:07And also, a lot of people who are able to afford to go consistently to the
- 9:13theater are older and tend to wear hearing aids or have some hearing loss.
- 9:19I mean, when we were at that show, I would say two-thirds of the audience, it was a
- 9:24Saturday matinee, I would say two-thirds of the audience were over the age of 60.
- 9:28KARA: Yeah.
- 9:29Yeah, that makes sense.
- 9:29DANI: 'Cause that's who can afford to and has the time to support theater.
- 9:33And so I'm sure for those people, a lot of them stayed for the talk-back
- 9:38and didn't know any sign language.
- 9:40KARA: Yes.
- 9:40DANI: And there were comments from them just about, like, how
- 9:42wonderfully accessible it was.
- 9:44KARA: Yeah, for these random hearing people-
- 9:46DANI: Yeah.
- 9:46KARA: Who've never seen it before, they loved it.
- 9:48DANI: Curb cut effect.
- 9:49KARA: Exactly.
- 9:50DANI: Yeah.
- 9:51KARA: Should we do it?
- 9:51Should we do our very last episode?
- 9:53DANI: Ooh, let's get to it.
- 9:54KARA: Whoo.
- 10:08Season one, episode 30, Street Noises Invade the House.
- 10:13October 22nd, 2012 is when it aired.
- 10:16DANI: True to form, I did not look up the painting.
- 10:18KARA: Yeah.
- 10:19It's a 1911 painting, different title, though.
- 10:22It's called The Street Enters the House.
- 10:24DANI: Oh.
- 10:25KARA: Which is confusing.
- 10:26By Umberto, I'm sorry, guys, Boccioni?
- 10:30Boccioni.
- 10:31DANI: That feels right.
- 10:32KARA: Yeah.
- 10:32It's a futurist-style painting, and it shows a woman on a balcony.
- 10:37She's in front of a busy street with the sounds of activity below, I guess being
- 10:42portrayed as a bunch of shapes and colors.
- 10:46Futurist painting is kind of like Picasso.
- 10:48It's just, like, very triangle-shaped and bright colors.
- 10:51DANI: It's not really my vibe.
- 10:53KARA: It was fine.
- 10:54I think it's called that because there were major disruptions in the family.
- 10:58DANI: Sure.
- 10:59KARA: Street noises invade the house.
- 11:00DANI: And they are invading.
- 11:02KARA: Yeah.
- 11:02DANI: We open on Daphne looking lovingly at her birth control packet.
- 11:08This was a real throwback for me.
- 11:10I haven't seen one of those in years.
- 11:12KARA: It looks like a commercial for birth control.
- 11:14DANI: But it's just to tell us that she and Chef Jeff did, in fact, have
- 11:18sex at the end of the last episode.
- 11:19KARA: A crime was committed.
- 11:19DANI: Yes.
- 11:20A crime was committed, and she's laughing.
- 11:23She's going, "Ha ha." She's getting a text from… Well, Regina walks in and is like,
- 11:29"They want us back in court," and she's like, "Okay." Her birth control, in a bag,
- 11:33in a CVS bag, out on her desk or whatever.
- 11:37She looks down at her phone.
- 11:38She has a text from Chef Jeff.
- 11:40She goes, "Ha ha ha." She throws her head back and laughs, and
- 11:43Regina's like, "Okay," and then she says something else to her.
- 11:47I don't know.
- 11:47Regina's trying to carry on a conversation with Daphne, and Daphne's-
- 11:50KARA: And Daphne's just, yeah.
- 11:51DANI: Half, half looking at her, half looking at her phone.
- 11:54Laugh, laugh, laughing, not being subtle at all, and Regina's like,
- 11:58"What's up?" And she's like, "It's just somebody from work." If you're a mother.
- 12:02KARA: Ask questions.
- 12:04DANI: Her reaction to that is, "God, you really love that job, don't you?"
- 12:07KARA: It's not the job, honey.
- 12:08DANI: If in the last episode, you were told by your daughter that she has a
- 12:12crush on her boss, and that she was upset that her boss was sleeping with Melody,
- 12:16and that it was, like, a whole thing-
- 12:18KARA: I know.
- 12:19DANI: Use your brain.
- 12:19Would you not connect the dots and say, "Huh, she's looking at
- 12:22her phone and giggling a lot.
- 12:24Must be a boy or something," and then Daphne confirms it's,
- 12:27quote, "someone at work"?
- 12:29Jesus Christ.
- 12:30KARA: Ask one more question.
- 12:32That's all you had to do.
- 12:33DANI: That's all you had to do.
- 12:35But she chooses not to.
- 12:36Also, this is a Halloween episode to end the season for some reason.
- 12:41KARA: Yeah.
- 12:42DANI: Have we forgotten that the girls' birthday is in October?
- 12:45KARA: Skipped right over that.
- 12:46DANI: We just didn't do their 17th birthday?
- 12:49It must be October 30th, because Regina asks Daphne if she's going
- 12:53to have to work tomorrow night.
- 12:55Like-
- 12:55KARA: Is tomorrow night being-
- 12:56DANI: I can't believe I'm making you work tomorrow night, and Daphne says,
- 12:59yes, we're doing a whole thing with pumpkins, and the waiters are dressing up.
- 13:03KARA: Oh.
- 13:04DANI: So it must be Halloween or, like, Halloweekend.
- 13:07In which case it's their fucking birthday.
- 13:10KARA: So I guess canonically they should be 17.
- 13:13DANI: Yeah.
- 13:14KARA: Okay.
- 13:15DANI: So that's why Daphne's not stressed.
- 13:16She said, "I actually just turned 17, age of consent. It's no longer a crime."
- 13:21KARA: Oh, that's so true.
- 13:22Well, they didn't explicitly say that to us, so.
- 13:24DANI: No, they didn't, but I'm trying to.
- 13:26KARA: Trying to justify what's happening.
- 13:27DANI: It happened off-screen.
- 13:28I'm trying to fill in some gaps here, 'cause what do you mean they skipped
- 13:31their birthday but they went out of their way to say it's Halloween?
- 13:34They could have just not done that.
- 13:36KARA: I know.
- 13:37I don't know.
- 13:37DANI: Okay.
- 13:38So yeah, Bay is with Zarra.
- 13:41KARA: Yeah, she was in the trailer.
- 13:42Bay, true to her mom's form, is also decorating for Halloween.
- 13:47DANI: Yeah.
- 13:47KARA: Which I thought was sweet.
- 13:48Like mother, like daughter.
- 13:49DANI: That's the Kathryn Kennish in her.
- 13:50KARA: Yeah.
- 13:51She's in the Halloween spirit.
- 13:52She's carving a pumpkin outside the trailer.
- 13:55Zarra gets a call from her dad, and she's like, "Bay, guess where he is.
- 13:59He's in Mexico. I wanna go see him."
- 14:01DANI: Yeah.
- 14:01KARA: He's also an artist like Zarra is.
- 14:03Remember, he's the one that kinda just up and left her.
- 14:06DANI: Yeah, who she should hate, but she maybe really admires.
- 14:10KARA: Very odd.
- 14:10DANI: And Bay's like, "Okay, you're gonna pay me back first though, right?"
- 14:14KARA: And Zarra's like, "Yeah."
- 14:15DANI: Zarra's like, "Duh, of course, obviously."
- 14:18KARA: At the same time, Bay is getting call after call from
- 14:21Kathryn, and she is ignoring it.
- 14:23DANI: Yes, but she finally picks up because Zarra's like, "She's gonna send
- 14:27the cops after you." And Kathryn is being so nice and gentle, and then John is in
- 14:32the background like, "Tell me where she is." And Kathryn's like, "hi, sweetie."
- 14:36KARA: "Hi, come home."
- 14:38DANI: I am more on John's side.
- 14:40I think Kathryn using kid gloves is not working.
- 14:44They're coddling her.
- 14:45KARA: They are.
- 14:46Like, come on, it's time to go.
- 14:48DANI: Yeah.
- 14:49KARA: Get your ass home.
- 14:50We're at Maize.
- 14:51DANI: Guess who's here?
- 14:52The owner, HR, basically.
- 14:54HR finally showed up.
- 14:56KARA: She introduces herself to Daphne.
- 14:59Daphne's coming in for a shift to make pumpkin food.
- 15:01Michelle shakes her hand and says, "Hi. I have some questions about you
- 15:06and your relationship with Chef Jeff."
- 15:08DANI: She's not subtle about it.
- 15:10KARA: No.
- 15:10DANI: She does not beat around the bush.
- 15:11She says, "I'm here because someone said you guys are dating."
- 15:14KARA: Yeah.
- 15:14Also, again, we don't know her age 'cause the show forgot her-
- 15:18DANI: Her birthday, yeah.
- 15:19KARA: The 17th birthday.
- 15:19But I was like, her mom should be in this room.
- 15:22I feel like she's being interrogated.
- 15:23DANI: Yeah, and so they're in, like, a back room, and Daphne keeps
- 15:27being like, "I should really wait for an interpreter 'cause I don't
- 15:30really understand you," which I think is a good strategy on her end.
- 15:33KARA: Yeah, great strategy.
- 15:34DANI: Um, but the woman's like, "No, no, you're not in trouble."
- 15:39KARA: Yeah, the owner, Michelle, is like,
- 15:41"You didn't do anything wrong, sweetie." Pretty much insinuating
- 15:45that Chef Jeff sexually harassed her.
- 15:46DANI: Right, and she does finally use the word we've been begging people
- 15:49to use this whole season, victim.
- 15:52She says, "It's not your fault if you were a victim."
- 15:54KARA: Also, abuse of power.
- 15:56DANI: Abuse of power.
- 15:57Thank God.
- 15:58KARA: I know.
- 15:58DANI: Finally, someone's fucking saying it.
- 15:59Unfortunately, the way she's going about it is not great.
- 16:03KARA: Also, as a child, I would be terrified if someone was saying,
- 16:06"It's okay. Maybe you did sexual favors to get a promotion, but
- 16:10it's okay, it's not your fault."
- 16:11DANI: She's also implying that, yeah, Daphne was promoted too fast, which
- 16:14is fucked up because Daphne was hired-
- 16:17KARA: She's working.
- 16:17DANI: But also she was hired much higher, and then Jeff demoted her-
- 16:21KARA: Yes.
- 16:21DANI: And then just re-promoted her.
- 16:23So I am confused.
- 16:25Like, wouldn't the owner know that?
- 16:26Wouldn't she see that in the record?
- 16:28She wasn't hired to wash dishes.
- 16:30She was hired to cook.
- 16:31KARA: I also think it's just obvious, in the workplace anyway, from probably other.
- 16:35DANI: Right, obviously.
- 16:36And so Daphne, this was smart of her to do.
- 16:39It's fucked up, but she's like, "Well, Scuba was fired on the same
- 16:43day that I rejected him, and I think he took that a little personally
- 16:46and maybe spread some rumors."
- 16:47KARA: Great point.
- 16:48DANI: Great strategy, Daphne, but it's too late.
- 16:51It's, like, very obvious.
- 16:53They've made it very obvious that something's happening.
- 16:55KARA: Yeah.
- 16:55DANI: And I think this woman is failing to consider that Daphne is panicked
- 17:00for her boyfriend, not for herself.
- 17:02KARA: Yes.
- 17:03DANI: Obviously, so that's tough.
- 17:06Back at Zarra's trailer.
- 17:08KARA: Yes.
- 17:08DANI: Bay is like, "I'm gonna try to emancipate myself." And
- 17:11Zarra's like, "Damn, where I come from, people just run away, girl.
- 17:14But, like, okay, you do you." Bay, it takes so long to go through the court
- 17:18system, and you canonically just turned 17, even though nobody's talking about it.
- 17:23Just wait it out.
- 17:24Just wait it out.
- 17:25It's one more year.
- 17:26Give it a rest.
- 17:27KARA: I know.
- 17:28DANI: I like that Zarra's trailer was super cute, Zarra's abandoned
- 17:31trailer in the abandoned trailer park.
- 17:33KARA: This doesn't look abandoned.
- 17:34This looks like a beautiful camper.
- 17:36She's turned this house into a home.
- 17:37DANI: Exactly.
- 17:38KARA: But not for long because there's some banging outside, and
- 17:42it's Smak and his gang of artists?
- 17:45DANI: Yeah.
- 17:46I don't typically assume that- Even street artists are going to be violent people.
- 17:52But these guys have baseball bats and scary Halloween masks on.
- 17:56KARA: They look like they're going to murder.
- 17:58DANI: Yeah.
- 17:58KARA: Zarra.
- 17:59DANI: And Zarra, I think rightfully, Bay freaks out.
- 18:02Zarra does grab a big-ass pumpkin carving knife.
- 18:04KARA: Yes.
- 18:05DANI: And it's, and Bay eyes it like, "Oh my God, what are you gonna do with
- 18:08that?" I think this situation it, it is actually appropriate to have a knife.
- 18:13KARA: They have a baseball bat and they are going to break in.
- 18:16DANI: Yeah.
- 18:16Like.
- 18:17KARA: I'm grabbing a weapon.
- 18:18DANI: Yeah.
- 18:19And Bay tries to call the police.
- 18:20Zarra says, "No, they'll just arrest all of us again."
- 18:23KARA: All right.
- 18:23DANI: I feel that that's probably still better than whatever Smak
- 18:27and his gang plan to do to you.
- 18:29But Bay clearly instead shoots Toby a text.
- 18:32Conveniently, Smak and his gang do not hit the one trailer in the whole
- 18:37trailer park that looks lived in and beautiful, and, like, it actively have,
- 18:42has people going in and out of it.
- 18:44KARA: Yes.
- 18:44DANI: They just hit all the really empty ones, leave that one alone.
- 18:48Maybe they think that someone real actually lives there that's not Zarra,
- 18:52and so they don't wanna bother them.
- 18:54Who knows?
- 18:54But they're skulking around.
- 18:56KARA: Yeah, they're kicking the doors down.
- 18:58DANI: Yeah.
- 18:58And so Toby shows up.
- 19:01KARA: He does.
- 19:02DANI: And says, "Hey Bay, got your text."
- 19:04No urgency at all in his voice.
- 19:06Bay's like, "Okay, great, we gotta go right now." Grabs him,
- 19:10they start running towards.
- 19:11KARA: Sprinting.
- 19:12DANI: Sprinting towards Toby's nice-ass car.
- 19:15KARA: BMW.
- 19:16DANI: The second, it's, it is shining in the trailer park sun.
- 19:19The second they get out there, Smak and his gang see them,
- 19:23start running towards them.
- 19:24Toby's still confused.
- 19:25He's not going fast enough.
- 19:27These people take fucking forever to get inside this car.
- 19:30KARA: I cannot believe it.
- 19:31Just get in.
- 19:32DANI: Also, I don't know.
- 19:34This is maybe just me, and would never be true in a show, but, like, if a man was
- 19:39chasing me with a baseball bat and I got in my car, I would be backing into him.
- 19:43I would not-
- 19:44KARA: I was also thinking that.
- 19:45DANI: I would not be driving away, or if I did drive away, I'd go whoop,
- 19:49turn around, hit him from the front on.
- 19:51That's a threat.
- 19:52KARA: Yeah.
- 19:53DANI: And-
- 19:54KARA: All over some street art?
- 19:55Kansas City artists killing each other?
- 19:59DANI: Yeah.
- 19:59Who knew?
- 19:59Yeah, they make it out.
- 20:00They drive away.
- 20:02They go show up at the Kennish house.
- 20:05KARA: They do.
- 20:06DANI: Bay brings Zarra to the Kennish house.
- 20:07She says, "Hey, guys." John is like, "Get the fuck inside so I can yell at you.
- 20:12Why is this girl here?"
- 20:13KARA: Yeah, and-
- 20:14DANI: And Zarra's like, "Parents love me." Her and Toby go
- 20:17hang out in the art studio.
- 20:18KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 20:19DANI: While John and Bay have it out, and Kathryn is also there,
- 20:23not really contributing much.
- 20:24KARA: Yeah, just being like, "Hi, honey, glad you're home." And
- 20:27John is like, "What the fuck?"
- 20:28DANI: Yeah.
- 20:29I really like Toby and Zarra's dynamic.
- 20:31I like Zarra being like, "You don't have any beef with me." And Toby's like, "Well,
- 20:36I'm protective of my little sister." He's like, "I have nothing against you, but it
- 20:39seems like she's in some bad situations, and you're also in those situations."
- 20:43KARA: Also, we almost got killed.
- 20:44DANI: Yeah.
- 20:45Also, he said- I think he, he's like, "I'm suspicious of anybody
- 20:49who is hanging out in a trailer park with a gang of guys trying to kill
- 20:53them. I think that's weird." Fair.
- 20:55KARA: Fair enough.
- 20:56DANI: And Toby says, "She's my little sister.
- 20:58I don't want anything bad to happen to her." And Zarra says, "Well,
- 21:00obviously I don't want anything bad to happen to her either."
- 21:03And Toby doesn't say anything, but you can see him clocking, like, Zarra just
- 21:07is someone who makes really bad choices.
- 21:09KARA: Yes.
- 21:10DANI: And is going to put herself in unsafe situations and bring Bay with her.
- 21:15KARA: Yes.
- 21:15Correct.
- 21:16DANI: So but I really like their dynamic.
- 21:19I like when Toby is a big brother.
- 21:21KARA: It's sweet.
- 21:21DANI: And protective.
- 21:22It is sweet in the rare moments that he steps up like that.
- 21:26KARA: I think what I needed Bay to do was to explain to John and
- 21:29Kathryn that Zarra is about to get murdered if she doesn't stay here.
- 21:34DANI: Yeah, I think they need the full context.
- 21:36But Bay doesn't wanna give that because Bay is also in, in her big
- 21:40I'm gonna keep doing street art, and it's not dangerous, and it's not bad.
- 21:44And it's like the way you're doing it- … it actually is really bad.
- 21:47I'm sure there are ways to do it that aren't dangerous or bad, and even
- 21:51ways to do it that aren't illegal But that's like part of it for her.
- 21:55So it's gonna be a big thing this whole episode, and I just can't.
- 21:59I had to like mentally swap it out.
- 22:01KARA: I can't empathize.
- 22:01DANI: I- right now I'm kind of pretending that she's gay.
- 22:04KARA: Sure.
- 22:04DANI: Genuinely, and like that's the drama.
- 22:06Because I just cannot empathize with a fresh 17-year-old being like, "I'm
- 22:12gonna emancipate myself 'cause my parents won't let me do illegal street
- 22:15art that's getting my friends beat up and making me rob my parents."
- 22:19KARA: I don't know.
- 22:20DANI: So I'm just like it's just that they really hate Zarra 'cause
- 22:22they think that Bay is gay, to me.
- 22:24KARA: And also 'cause she's involved in crime.
- 22:25DANI: No, but it's just to me, in my head.
- 22:27KARA: To you.
- 22:27Sure.
- 22:27DANI: That's what I'm making it so that I can side with her at least a little.
- 22:30KARA: Okay, fair.
- 22:31But Bay's like, "Okay, I'm home.
- 22:33Whatever.
- 22:34Can Zarra stay with us?" And John and Kathryn are like, "No."
- 22:36DANI: Yeah.
- 22:37But then, and then Regina walks in, and Bay's like, "Great, can Zarra stay with
- 22:41you?" And John's like, "No, that's my house too, and she cannot stay there."
- 22:45And Kathryn's like, Kathryn gets pissed.
- 22:48KARA: Yeah.
- 22:48DANI: And Regina-
- 22:49KARA: I think Regina rightfully is like, "I don't know what is going on."
- 22:52DANI: Yeah.
- 22:52Regina takes the path of least resistance, but Bay follows her outside as she leaves,
- 22:57and she's like, "My parents are always fighting to be parents to Daphne, and you
- 23:02don't even wanna parent me a little bit?"
- 23:04KARA: Tea.
- 23:04DANI: Which is true.
- 23:05But I think if Regina was parenting, she would also be like, "No, you
- 23:08can't fucking hang out with Zarra."
- 23:10KARA: Yes, I also think she'd say that.
- 23:12DANI: So while this is all going down, back at Maize-
- 23:16KARA: Oh, wait.
- 23:16I also just wanted to say since Zarra can't stay with them,
- 23:19she is gonna stay with 8 Ball.
- 23:21DANI: Yeah.
- 23:21Bay goes back in and is like, "You can't stay here," and Zarra's like, "I
- 23:25figured from all the yelling and drama, so I'm gonna stay with another friend.
- 23:28It's fine."
- 23:29KARA: Great.
- 23:30DANI: And then back at Maize.
- 23:31KARA: Back at Maize.
- 23:32DANI: Daphne and Chef Jeff are having a conversation privately in the freezer.
- 23:37I feel that the rumors would be less intense if they stopped having
- 23:40private conversations in the freezer.
- 23:42KARA: They're just talking in the freezer all day.
- 23:44DANI: I would be so pissed if this was my job environment.
- 23:47This was happening at my high-stress kitchen job.
- 23:50KARA: Chef Jeff is, "I feel like I'm in trouble. Did Melody report us?" My friend
- 23:54Arielle, shout-out to Arielle, pointed out to me that Melody is a mandated reporter,
- 24:00so legally she does have to report Daphne, and she should have in the last episode.
- 24:04DANI: Yeah.
- 24:04No one in this show is really making the best decisions around this, though, so
- 24:09I don't know if I believe she did that.
- 24:11KARA: Yeah.
- 24:12But anyways, she should have.
- 24:13DANI: She should have.
- 24:14Good point.
- 24:14KARA: Yeah.
- 24:15DANI: Um-
- 24:15KARA: But he's just-
- 24:16DANI: He's freaking out.
- 24:17KARA: Pissy.
- 24:18DANI: He's being pissy.
- 24:19He's blaming her.
- 24:20Who's surprised?
- 24:21Who's surprised that this is the manchild's reaction?
- 24:23He's like, "I can't believe you said something clearly.
- 24:27Like, you don't understand.
- 24:29This is my life.
- 24:30This is my career.
- 24:31I bet they were really nice to you in your interrogation, but to me they
- 24:34were like, 'You won't even be flipping burgers at White Castle after this.'"
- 24:38KARA: And Daphne's trying to talk him down, but she's clearly scared.
- 24:42DANI: Yeah, she's scared, and she's like-
- 24:44KARA: She looks really small, too.
- 24:46DANI: Her fucking side ponytail.
- 24:48KARA: I know.
- 24:48DANI: God.
- 24:49And then back at the house.
- 24:51KARA: Angelo comes back.
- 24:52DANI: Angelo's back, yeah.
- 24:53KARA: Angelo's back.
- 24:53He comes back from a run.
- 24:55He sees Regina and Adrianna getting in the car.
- 24:58Apparently Regina has not been working at Geraldo's.
- 25:01DANI: Yes.
- 25:01That was confirmed for us.
- 25:03KARA: That was confirmed.
- 25:04Because of her tendonitis, she has not been cutting hair.
- 25:07So she says, "I'm gonna go out and run an errand." And that errand is, I'm going
- 25:11to an employment agency to look for a job that doesn't involve cutting hair.
- 25:15And Angelo's like, "Don't worry, I'll support you with my unstable carpentry
- 25:20job." And Adrianna's like, "Yeah, right."
- 25:22DANI: Well, isn't the implication, like, I'm about to win a bunch
- 25:25of money from this lawsuit?
- 25:26KARA: Pretty much.
- 25:27DANI: Yeah.
- 25:28Because I got this- Yeah, Adrianna continues to be Angelo's number-one
- 25:31hater, and I do love her commitment.
- 25:32KARA: I do love that.
- 25:33DANI: She does not let him slip at all.
- 25:36KARA: No.
- 25:37DANI: Okay.
- 25:37Is this when… I think I stopped taking notes after this.
- 25:41Okay, thank you.
- 25:42KARA: Emmett is in the guest house.
- 25:43I think Daphne has texted him.
- 25:45Um, she's panicking.
- 25:46DANI: Yeah, Emmett's, like, the only one that fully knows the Chef Jeff
- 25:50dating situation, like, all the context.
- 25:53Which I do like that they're clearly back to being besties.
- 25:56KARA: Yeah, me too.
- 25:56DANI: That Daphne's sharing that with him.
- 25:57KARA: Yeah.
- 25:58Emmett plays quite a big role in this episode.
- 26:00DANI: He does, and he looks very cute.
- 26:02KARA: He does look very cute.
- 26:02DANI: They are so good at making him look cute when he's not Bay's boyfriend.
- 26:06KARA: Yeah.
- 26:06DANI: It pisses me off.
- 26:08He's looking so handsome.
- 26:09KARA: I know.
- 26:10Emmett goes to see Daphne, and he's like, "You look panicked
- 26:13about this Chef Jeff thing.
- 26:14What's up?" And she's like, "Well, Chef Jeff hasn't been texting me.
- 26:18I, he's mad at me.
- 26:19I'm so scared.
- 26:20And the owner keeps saying he's in a position of power
- 26:24and that he's in the wrong.
- 26:25But, um, he didn't do anything wrong.
- 26:27I pushed him to do it."
- 26:28DANI: He says something like, "Well, it, you didn't force him to date
- 26:33you." And she said, "But I pushed it."
- 26:35KARA: You were s- you were 16, honey.
- 26:38DANI: It's like, it makes me so upset.
- 26:40KARA: It's so sad.
- 26:41It's just sad.
- 26:42DANI: Emmett's, like, trying his best to be like, "It's fine.
- 26:46Fuck this guy.
- 26:47Maybe it's for the best that he gets fired." And D- and he says,
- 26:50"Because then if you didn't work together, it wouldn't be as big of a
- 26:54problem." Or I think he says, "There wouldn't be a problem at all." No
- 26:58one's fucking talking about the age.
- 27:00I don't understand why it's not a bigger factor.
- 27:03If he's old enough to fuck your mom, Emmett, he's too old to fuck Daphne.
- 27:07Come on.
- 27:08KARA: It's so upsetting.
- 27:09DANI: But she's like, "Oh my God, you're right. If we don't work
- 27:12together, then it's no big deal."
- 27:14KARA: Yeah, huge light bulb.
- 27:15DANI: "I gotta go." Huge light bulb.
- 27:17She leaves.
- 27:18We don't see it, but she fucking quits her job.
- 27:20She goes and she quits her job.
- 27:22KARA: Ugh.
- 27:22DANI: Um.
- 27:23KARA: Yeah.
- 27:23Emmett walks outside the guest house, and he sees Bay packing her car.
- 27:29DANI: Yeah.
- 27:29KARA: With paint materials He's like, "Whoa, nice car.
- 27:33You painted that?
- 27:33Okay, cool." Sees her filling the car with spray paint and he
- 27:36goes, "Are you going somewhere?
- 27:38Also, Daphne returned the camera that you borrowed a couple weeks ago.
- 27:42It looks like you're doing some really dangerous stuff.
- 27:45I saw your friends, uh, whip out a knife and there was a fight.
- 27:48Like, what are you doing?"
- 27:50DANI: Love that Bay didn't fucking try to delete those photos.
- 27:53KARA: That's really funny to me.
- 27:55DANI: Definitely wipe the camera before you give it back, guys.
- 27:58At least delete, download and delete the work that you took
- 28:02on someone else's camera.
- 28:03KARA: Really.
- 28:04DANI: Before you give it back.
- 28:04KARA: Please.
- 28:05But Emmett goes, "Yeah, what you're doing seems dangerous and I'm worried."
- 28:08Bay goes, "Well, it's not your job to worry about me," and she drives off.
- 28:11DANI: She's pushing everyone away.
- 28:13Also, she did not put her seatbelt on before she backed out.
- 28:16KARA: It doesn't look like the car has seat belts.
- 28:18DANI: It definitely does.
- 28:19KARA: It should.
- 28:20DANI: There's no way that they're showing, ABC Family is showing a car without seat
- 28:25belts, but Bay does not use hers, I guess.
- 28:28KARA: I know Zarra didn't either later, but that's, uh.
- 28:31DANI: Maybe they're lap belts.
- 28:32Maybe the car's old enough that it's just a lap belt.
- 28:35I feel like you sh- But that feels not road safe.
- 28:36KARA: That's not safe.
- 28:37DANI: Yeah.
- 28:38Well.
- 28:38KARA: Wear your seatbelt, guys.
- 28:39DANI: Wear, wear your fucking seatbelt.
- 28:41KARA: Get your vaccine and wear your seatbelts.
- 28:42DANI: Speaking of things that are unsafe.
- 28:44KARA: Oh, God.
- 28:45DANI: Daphne's in the courthouse bathroom, gets a text from Chef Jeff
- 28:50being like, "You quit your job, stupid. You just made everything worse."
- 28:54KARA: Yeah.
- 28:54DANI: She starts crying.
- 28:55Regina walks in and Daphne's like, "No, I'm fine.
- 28:59Nothing's wrong." And Regina's like, "You're not telling me
- 29:01something." Duh, girl, come on.
- 29:04Daphne lets it slip so casually that they're hooking up, 'cause she says, "I
- 29:09quit my job at the restaurant." Or I- she says it in a way that leaves it open-ended
- 29:14on whether she quit or she was fired, and Regina's like, "Oh my God, what happened?"
- 29:18Like, "Let me help you." And Daphne's like, "No, no, I chose to do it.
- 29:23KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 29:24DANI: "Because now Jeff and I can be together." What?
- 29:27And Daphne just, like, assumes that Regina knew.
- 29:30KARA: Or, like, would be cool with it.
- 29:32DANI: Would be cool.
- 29:32She tells her so casually.
- 29:34KARA: Can you imagine being in that courthouse bathroom in the stall like-
- 29:37DANI: Trying to pee and being like, "Oh, no."
- 29:39KARA: No, I can't get out.
- 29:41I also wanna listen.
- 29:42DANI: Right.
- 29:42Nightmare.
- 29:44KARA: I know.
- 29:44But Regina is immediately appalled, and she's like, "Chef Jeff? That is an
- 29:49extremely inappropriate relationship." Again, not saying the word crime.
- 29:53DANI: No.
- 29:53It's so weird the way they're phrasing it.
- 29:56And then Daphne says, "I thought you would be supportive." And Regina goes,
- 29:59"Why the hell would you think that?"
- 30:01And Daphne says, "You're not exactly a role model for choosing great men."
- 30:05KARA: Ooh.
- 30:05DANI: Okay, so in that is an admission that you know that this is a bad choice.
- 30:10KARA: Correct.
- 30:11DANI: Like, she's saying, "I think my mom will be supportive 'cause my mom has
- 30:14also been stupid about men, so it's fine that I'm stupid about men." That's crazy.
- 30:19Crazy take, girl.
- 30:19KARA: Yeah.
- 30:20DANI: But Regina's response to this is to say, "You think that I would be supportive
- 30:26of you giving up everything you've earned for a man?" She says, "That must be
- 30:32Kathryn talking, 'cause that is not me."
- 30:34KARA: What the fuck did Kathryn do to you?
- 30:36DANI: Kathryn catching strays.
- 30:37What the fu- First of all, Kathryn hasn't given up anything.
- 30:41She married up.
- 30:42KARA: She, in fact, is.
- 30:44DANI: She married a hot baseball player.
- 30:45She's super rich.
- 30:47She has a bestselling book.
- 30:49KARA: And she's an author.
- 30:49Yeah, she's fine.
- 30:49DANI: She's doing actually great, Regina.
- 30:51Why would you throw her under the bus?
- 30:53And Daphne is very hurt by this sentence as well.
- 30:56KARA: I was like, what the fuck?
- 30:58That was.
- 30:58DANI: That was really rude.
- 30:59KARA: That was so mean.
- 31:00And also she's like, "You will be going back to this restaurant and begging
- 31:04for your job and dumping Chef Jeff."
- 31:06DANI: Daphne's not gonna do any of those things.
- 31:08KARA: No.
- 31:08DANI: But… And then Daphne exits the bathroom, immediately
- 31:11sees John and Kathryn.
- 31:12KARA: No.
- 31:13Adrianna interrupts.
- 31:15DANI: Oh, yeah.
- 31:15KARA: Goes into the bathroom and is like, "Hi, guys. Courtroom time."
- 31:19DANI: So Daphne leaves, goes and sees John and Kathryn immediately, no longer
- 31:24in tears, and is like, "Do you guys need anything? I love you so much."
- 31:28Turns around, is so nice to them.
- 31:30KARA: Well, John and Kathryn are stressed because Bay isn't there.
- 31:33DANI: John and Kathryn are stressed.
- 31:34Bay is missing still.
- 31:36KARA: Yeah.
- 31:37Because Kathryn's about to take the stand, remember.
- 31:39DANI: Yeah.
- 31:39KARA: She got called to testify by-
- 31:41DANI: So it's really fucked up that Bay has skipped out on-
- 31:45KARA: I know.
- 31:45DANI: This day.
- 31:46Kathryn is saying, "Today of all days, I can't believe she's
- 31:48not gonna be here for me."
- 31:50KARA: Yeah.
- 31:50Kathryn takes the stand.
- 31:52DANI: God.
- 31:52KARA: The defendant's lawyer's asking her about all the things
- 31:56she's done wrong, basically, like her lending money to Britzia.
- 31:58And he was like, "Was that hush money?" And she goes, "No, I literally just
- 32:01wanted to help her, 'cause she was going to testify and then she lost her job."
- 32:05DANI: Yeah.
- 32:05I know we're biased, but, like, Kathryn looks and sounds
- 32:09like an angel on that stand.
- 32:11KARA: Right.
- 32:11The lawyer whips out her book and says, "You said you feel blessed, that
- 32:16you were given more than, you were given more than you have ever wanted.
- 32:20And why are you suing for damages if everything's okay and you're great?"
- 32:25DANI: This is so fucked.
- 32:26KARA: Yeah.
- 32:26And Kathryn's like, "Obviously, I'm devastated. I missed 16
- 32:30years of my daughter's life."
- 32:31DANI: Yeah.
- 32:31She delivers this beautiful monologue.
- 32:33It did make me sob.
- 32:35KARA: Yeah.
- 32:35DANI: It was so nice Just about all of the things she missed, that
- 32:39she couldn't be there for Daphne all the time, she was hurting.
- 32:42KARA: Yeah, but then she was like, "I would never do a do-over though, because
- 32:45then would mean not knowing Bay."
- 32:47DANI: Yeah, because the lawyer's follow-up question is like, "So do you
- 32:50regret it? So you wish the switch never happened? So if you could go back,
- 32:53you would change it?" Fuck this guy.
- 32:55This guy is so evil.
- 32:56And she's like, "Obviously not. Like, I'm not gonna say that." Even though
- 33:00Bay wasn't there, so she could have said it and it wouldn't have hurt anyone.
- 33:03But she doesn't say it, and so then they leave being like, "Well, now we've said
- 33:09we, we refuse to condemn the fact that the switch happened." It shouldn't matter.
- 33:14KARA: D-
- 33:14DANI: yeah.
- 33:15KARA: It's still emot- I assume what they're suing the hospital
- 33:17for is emotional damages.
- 33:18DANI: Yeah.
- 33:19KARA: It's still emotional damages even if you, okay, you love both of them?
- 33:24DANI: Great.
- 33:24KARA: That's great.
- 33:25They're still switched.
- 33:26DANI: And, and also fuck the judge.
- 33:27I feel like the judge keeps being like, "Sustained." He's not listening
- 33:31to any of the objections even though they're valid, so hate him.
- 33:34They're outside and they're all commiserating 'cause they think maybe it
- 33:37went bad after she refuses to condemn her other daughter And then Emmett shows up.
- 33:46KARA: This was so wild, like the light is streaming through the
- 33:49courthouse window like he's an angel.
- 33:51DANI: Yeah, he shows up.
- 33:52John immediately… I forgot that John has beef with Emmett, but, like,
- 33:56John has serious beef with Emmett.
- 33:58KARA: Why does he have beef with Emmett?
- 33:59Just 'cause-
- 33:59DANI: 'Cause he's, like, a dad and he knows that he hurt his daughter.
- 34:01He doesn't really know the details, but he's like, "What,
- 34:03this guy again? Why is he here?"
- 34:05KARA: And then Emmett goes, "I know where Bay is.
- 34:07I saw her loading up the car and going s- somewhere." And John now
- 34:11decides, "We've been looking for Bay all day, but now I'm going to whip
- 34:16out the tracker app on my phone."
- 34:18DANI: Yeah, that would've been my first step.
- 34:20Sorry, I love to track people.
- 34:21KARA: Yeah.
- 34:22I have Find My Friends, don't worry.
- 34:23DANI: I have Find My Friends.
- 34:25KARA: Oh, she's in Oklahoma.
- 34:27Okay.
- 34:27And then Toby is like, "Well, I do remember Zarra saying her dad's in
- 34:31Mexico and that they wanted to go." And John is like, "All right, time
- 34:35to go and find them." And Emmett's like, "I'll go with you." Road trip.
- 34:39DANI: Random.
- 34:40KARA: Road trip.
- 34:40DANI: To such a random duo, but okay.
- 34:43Yeah.
- 34:43So the odd couple's going.
- 34:45KARA: Yeah.
- 34:45DANI: On a road trip.
- 34:46Bay and Zarra are in the car.
- 34:48They're on their way to Mexico.
- 34:49KARA: John and Emmett are following.
- 34:51All of a sudden, now she's in San Antonio?
- 34:54That is, like, six hours away.
- 34:55DANI: They're speeding.
- 34:56KARA: From the south of Oklahoma to San Antonio, Texas, which is
- 34:59only a few hours from the border.
- 35:01That's, like, six hours.
- 35:02DANI: They're speeding, I guess.
- 35:03They're not driving responsibly.
- 35:05And that's when Bay is, like, starts to get hit with nerves.
- 35:09They're a couple hours from the border.
- 35:11She's like-
- 35:12KARA: They're talking about what they're gonna do, the
- 35:14cities they're gonna see, and-
- 35:15DANI: Guacamole with every meal.
- 35:17KARA: Yeah, and so-
- 35:17DANI: And Zarra says, "Margaritas with every meal." And they're,
- 35:20they're hooting and hollering.
- 35:22KARA: And Zarra's like, "Well, I wanna go to this city and this city, and I
- 35:25wanna see Cuba." And Bay is like, "Oh.
- 35:28That's actually a really long time away from home."
- 35:31DANI: Yeah.
- 35:31She's realizing some things.
- 35:33And then Zarra's like, "Are you okay?" And Bay says, "I just didn't say
- 35:37goodbye to Daphne and I feel bad." Which was really sweet, I thought.
- 35:41KARA: First person she thought of.
- 35:42DANI: Yeah.
- 35:43Those are- they're sisters.
- 35:44KARA: I know.
- 35:45DANI: Um, so Emmett's driving.
- 35:48Well, John's driving.
- 35:50Emmett's riding, and they are actually communicating.
- 35:54John's reception is getting better.
- 35:56KARA: Yeah.
- 35:57DANI: Um, now in this episode.
- 35:59KARA: John's just like, "I don't know what to do with Bay. Hey, Emmett, you had a bad
- 36:03time last year with your parents getting divorced. Like, how did you deal with it?"
- 36:07DANI: Yeah, and Emmett makes John pull over.
- 36:09KARA: Yeah.
- 36:09DANI: So he can explain.
- 36:10KARA: Well, also so he can look and not drive.
- 36:13DANI: Yeah.
- 36:13But I was like, it was so funny 'cause they're like, "Oh, my God, she's
- 36:16in San Antonio, we gotta speed." And then Emmett's like, "Pull over.
- 36:19We need to talk." It's like, okay.
- 36:21KARA: All right.
- 36:22So they pull over and then Emmett signs, and the way- This is so funny.
- 36:26He's signing, and then John is so sincerely repeating back what he's saying.
- 36:31DANI: Yeah, just to confirm to the audience that he understands,
- 36:34'cause John's not the best signer.
- 36:36KARA: Yeah, 'cause Emmett signs like, "Last year my parents were
- 36:39in their world." And John goes, "Last year my parents were in
- 36:43their world, smashing things?"
- 36:45DANI: But it's incredibly effective in this moment, 'cause it's a very emotional
- 36:49monologue from Emmett, and it really helps John to understand a little bit
- 36:54more why Bay's acting the way she is.
- 36:56So Emmett's basically like, "I was fucking up and making a lot of noise
- 37:01to force my parents to hear me."
- 37:03KARA: And also ask how I was doing.
- 37:05DANI: Yeah, and to check on me, because they were in their own world.
- 37:08KARA: Yes.
- 37:08DANI: And John is realizing, okay, we've kind of also been in our own world
- 37:13and maybe Bay is crying for help here.
- 37:16KARA: Yes, and they're gonna continue crying for help, because they're at
- 37:18the rest stop now somewhere in Texas.
- 37:20DANI: Yeah, they went to a shitty restaurant because they exit and Bay says,
- 37:25"The pork rinds from the vending machine at the last rest stop would've been
- 37:30better than what we just ate." And to make matters worse, someone broke into the car.
- 37:34KARA: Yeah, they just got burglarized.
- 37:35DANI: Although, I just wanna point out, it's an open air vehicle.
- 37:39I always wonder about this with open air vehicles.
- 37:42They have packed all their stuff in the open air trunk.
- 37:45Well- Trunk bed, basically, of the car.
- 37:48KARA: Yes.
- 37:48DANI: So it's like, yeah, things are gonna get stolen.
- 37:51Bay leaves her passport and all of the money in the sleeping bag.
- 37:55KARA: Gone.
- 37:56DANI: Obviously gone.
- 37:57KARA: Gone, gone.
- 37:59DANI: This is stupid of them.
- 38:00And Zarra thinks so too.
- 38:01Zarra didn't realize that all of the valuables were still in the car.
- 38:05KARA: Yeah.
- 38:05DANI: But Bay, it just, like, emphasizes how much Bay doesn't
- 38:09know about the world, basically.
- 38:11KARA: No.
- 38:12And she's like, "Well, how much further is your dad from here?"
- 38:14And Zarra's like, "Well…"
- 38:17DANI: "I don't really know where he lives."
- 38:18KARA: "Like, we emailed once, but I'm just like waiting for him to call,
- 38:22and I'll get, I'll get him on the payphone." And Bay's like, "So you
- 38:26don't even know where we're going?" And Zarra's like, "No, no, no, no, no.
- 38:29I, I have an idea of where we're going."
- 38:31DANI: She has no idea where they're going.
- 38:33KARA: Also, we can smuggle across the border.
- 38:35It's fine.
- 38:36You're gonna smuggle across the border in this very colorful car?
- 38:39DANI: Okay, so back at Maize, things are going about as bad for Daphne.
- 38:43KARA: Chef Jeff confronts Daphne at the restaurant and goes, "Why the
- 38:47hell did you quit? It looks like we're guilty and like we lied."
- 38:51DANI: And she's like, "But it doesn't matter, 'cause now we can be together."
- 38:55KARA: And then he goes.
- 38:56DANI: And Jeff goes.
- 38:56KARA: "Oh, honey…"
- 38:57DANI: "Oh, honey."
- 38:59KARA: Oof.
- 38:59DANI: So brutal.
- 39:01KARA: Painful.
- 39:02DANI: Okay.
- 39:03Also, his reaction to that, he told her he, quote, "Loved
- 39:08so many things about her."
- 39:09KARA: Yes.
- 39:10DANI: One episode ago.
- 39:11KARA: It feels like he had a full 180 from last episode to this.
- 39:14DANI: Yeah, there's no scenes of them being, like, any lovey-dovey
- 39:18after they slept together.
- 39:19So it must be… I mean, from Chef Jeff's perspective, you sleep with a
- 39:23teenager, and then immediately the owner of the restaurant shows up to be like,
- 39:27"Are you sleeping with the teenager?" He's just, like, completely shut off.
- 39:31KARA: Yes.
- 39:31DANI: The consequences of his actions arrived immediately, and it made him flip.
- 39:35KARA: Barely.
- 39:36DANI: And then Daphne goes ahead and says, "I'm in love with you."
- 39:39KARA: And then he goes, "One day you're gonna find someone
- 39:42so much better than me."
- 39:43DANI: And she's-
- 39:44KARA: Sobbing.
- 39:45DANI: She's sobbing, and then she closes her eyes and goes, "If I
- 39:48close my eyes, I can imagine you're saying anything I wanna hear."
- 39:52KARA: That was so cringe.
- 39:53I'm sorry.
- 39:53DANI: It was so cringe, and also, like, did they want us to be like aw.
- 39:59I still don't really know what the showrunners wanted us to experience
- 40:03and feel about this relationship.
- 40:06'Cause so much of it is written as if they were hoping that we'd be rooting
- 40:10for Daphne to be with this man.
- 40:12KARA: Right.
- 40:13DANI: Anyway, oh, and then he says, he, he says, she says, "I'm in love
- 40:17with you." And he says, "You were like this gift I didn't expect." What?
- 40:24And then he's like, "Okay, bye." So she leaves.
- 40:27Um.
- 40:27KARA: She's weeping.
- 40:28DANI: Yeah.
- 40:29It's not great.
- 40:30And then- Back in San Antonio, I guess, is still where they are, 'cause they
- 40:35haven't made it across the border.
- 40:36KARA: Somewhere near the border, Bay and Zarra are sleeping in the car, hood down.
- 40:40This is so dangerous.
- 40:41DANI: I don't think there's a top.
- 40:43KARA: I guess not.
- 40:44DANI: There's not a top to the car.
- 40:45KARA: In Kansas City?
- 40:46DANI: Yeah, dude.
- 40:47It's not a reasonable car.
- 40:49KARA: Okay.
- 40:50DANI: So they're, yeah, sleeping in the open air in the car.
- 40:53Two figures approach from behind.
- 40:55KARA: And they're like, "Ah, ah, I have a weapon."
- 40:57DANI: And you think, "Uh-oh, this is Smak." Yeah.
- 40:58Zarra stands up.
- 40:59She says, "I have a weapon." And then thank God, you hear John's
- 41:02reassuring voice from the darkness say, "God, I hope that's not true."
- 41:05KARA: Thank goodness.
- 41:06He's like, "Found you. Bay, you and I, let's go talk."
- 41:10And he goes, "Hey, honey, what you doing?" I love this.
- 41:13DANI: I think this is a great approach.
- 41:14I think he's finally locked in, parenting-wise.
- 41:16KARA: This is awesome.
- 41:17He goes, "Honey, what's going on?" And she goes, "We're gonna go to
- 41:20Mexico." And he's like, "Okay."
- 41:23DANI: Oh, okay.
- 41:23KARA: And she goes, "Well, but I have no money… and no passport." And he goes-
- 41:28DANI: Oh.
- 41:28KARA: "Hmm, that's gonna be hard."
- 41:29DANI: Yeah.
- 41:30KARA: "Is that rational, honey?" And then he goes, "That could be a problem."
- 41:33DANI: Yeah.
- 41:34And she says, "I'm gonna keep doing street art.
- 41:37I can't stop doing it.
- 41:38It's a part of me.
- 41:39I don't know who I'd be without it." And he says, "That's how I feel about you."
- 41:43KARA: All right.
- 41:44DANI: I thought that was sweet.
- 41:46KARA: It's sweet.
- 41:47DANI: That got me.
- 41:47KARA: I think it's the street art part that-
- 41:49DANI: Oh, for sure.
- 41:49For sure.
- 41:50KARA: Yeah.
- 41:50But he's like-
- 41:51DANI: But again, mind you, I've switched it, so now it's
- 41:54Bay saying, "I'm, I'm gay."
- 41:56KARA: Right.
- 41:56And he's saying, "I love my daughter so much."
- 41:58DANI: And he's saying, "I love you, I love you, I love you. It doesn't matter."
- 42:00And that's beautiful.
- 42:02KARA: You're right.
- 42:03Back at the Kennish property, Regina is also worried about Bay.
- 42:07DANI: Yeah.
- 42:07John says, "Let's go home.
- 42:09Your mom is worried sick." And then he pauses and he says, "Both of your
- 42:13moms are worried sick." So I guess we're led to believe that Regina has
- 42:17learned about this off-screen, 'cause no one's really been filling her in.
- 42:20But we cut to Regina in the guest house.
- 42:22She's freaking out.
- 42:23KARA: Yes.
- 42:24She's talking to Angelo about it.
- 42:25DANI: She's talking to Angelo, and she's like, "God, it's first this and
- 42:28then the Daphne thing." And Angelo's like "What Daphne thing?" And Regina's
- 42:31like, "Well, Daphne's dating her boss."
- 42:34KARA: And then Angelo finally-
- 42:36DANI: Immediately, how old is he?
- 42:38KARA: Asked the right question.
- 42:38And Regina goes, "I don't know, 27, 28?"
- 42:41DANI: I'm 27.
- 42:42There's no way that full-grown man is 27 years old.

- 54:04and confusing time in their life.
- 54:06DANI: Yes, exactly.

- 54:24is right in front of them in each other.

- 54:36DANI: Like, not all growth is positive, right?

- 54:39DANI: Like, I think she's had a lot of negative character traits at least
- 54:43come to light through this situation.

- 54:51is also an active participant, and, like, know, has said out loud, has

- 55:07decisions like this all the time."
- 55:09KARA: My mom also has shitty taste, yeah.
- 55:10DANI: So I think there's a layer too there of, like, acknowledging how much Regina
- 55:16and Daphne are alike in their thinking.

- 55:19DANI: And that Daphne is Regina's daughter in that way.
- 55:21KARA: For sure.
