Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:12Speaker 1: conservation always wins. There is a prize. Meat Eater will
- 0:16Speaker 1: donate $ 500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Giannis, Brody, Randall, Mark, Reva,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and Nick Glenn. This is a 10-round quiz show with
- 0:28Speaker 1: questions from Meat Eaters 4 Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and cooking.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Can I ask a question?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 0:35Speaker 2: You used to give Randall top billing.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Did I?
- 0:38Speaker 1: I feel like I change it up a lot. Do you?
- 0:41Speaker 1: I think I do.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like Randall had top billing.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And then- But then sometimes I'm like, I think I'm overcorrecting.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm like, well, I had Randall as the first name
- 0:49Speaker 1: a lot recently. So now he's bumped down to like
- 0:52Speaker 1: fourth billing.
- 0:53Speaker 5: Oh, I thought you've always done it by seniority. Because
- 0:55Speaker 5: I was actually, when you gave me my list of
- 0:57Speaker 5: guests for my show later today, I tried to rank
- 1:00Speaker 5: them by who's been here the longest. And I always
- 1:03Speaker 5: thought that's why my name came first.
- 1:06Speaker 1: No, it's because you're the headliner, Yanni. Because you're famous, man. Yeah.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Not because I'm employee number one.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Is that your employee number?
- 1:15Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Either Steve or myself.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Mediator Trivia is brought to you by one of my
- 1:19Speaker 1: favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light Head for the Mountains.
- 1:22Speaker 1: All right, Nick, this is your first time on the show.
- 1:24Speaker 1: That's why you were the last name. Tell folks what
- 1:27Speaker 1: you do here at Mediator.
- 1:29Speaker 4: I am the social media video editor.
- 1:32Speaker 7: Closer to the mic, Nick.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Social media video editor.
- 1:35Speaker 1: That means when a really funny video of Randall comes out,
- 1:39Speaker 1: you're the guy back there on the ones and twos.
- 1:40Speaker 4: We're talking about me a lot today.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Making sure that it's trying to make up for.
- 1:44Speaker 3: That yep yep shooting editing everything okay everything you see.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Strengths and weaknesses when it comes to meat eater trivia
- 1:51Speaker 1: hunting fishing conservation cooking what do you think.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Well i am a first generation hunter if you that's
- 1:56Speaker 3: what it's called i don't really know um so still
- 1:59Speaker 3: figuring it all out uh hunting wise but very confident
- 2:02Speaker 3: fishing freshwater mostly saltwater but Fishing forward.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Nick yelled across the hallway this morning from his office
- 2:09Speaker 1: to my office that he got his driver's license yesterday.
- 2:12Speaker 1: So now he's going to own a deer tag in
- 2:14Speaker 1: Montana this year.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Yeah, hopefully.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It's all happening. Look out deer now.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Seriously, congratulations. You got your driver's license or you got
- 2:20Speaker 4: your driver's license back? Got a driver's license.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Nice.
- 2:25Speaker 5: In the state of Montana.
- 2:27Speaker 4: In Montana.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Oh, oh, oh.
- 2:29Speaker 4: In Montana. I thought you just didn't know how to drive. Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Figured it out.
- 2:32Speaker 1: We're starting today with a mailbag question. If you have
- 2:34Speaker 1: a question you want the trivia crew to answer, then
- 2:36Speaker 1: send your question with the subject line mailbag to trivia
- 2:39Speaker 1: at themeadeater.com. This is from Steven in Minnesota. When going
- 2:43Speaker 1: out to hunt public land, I was wondering if the
- 2:45Speaker 1: crew had any odd, peculiar things that they take into consideration.
- 2:49Speaker 1: For example... I hunt a lot of public lands in
- 2:51Speaker 1: Western Wisconsin. One factor I consider is whether the Packers
- 2:55Speaker 1: are playing that day. Bonus if it's against a division
- 2:57Speaker 1: opponent or primetime game. Another is that this small Minnesota
- 3:02Speaker 1: town I hunt by has a weekly community event and
- 3:05Speaker 1: I try to hunt whenever this is going on. My
- 3:07Speaker 1: assumption is that potential hunters will be busy tending to
- 3:11Speaker 1: these things, watching the Packers or going to this community event.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I'm not sure if these factors really matter though, but
- 3:17Speaker 1: I think it's working so far. All right, what do
- 3:20Speaker 1: we think for Steven?
- 3:21Speaker 6: I think that's smart, what he's doing and what he's
- 3:24Speaker 6: thinking about. I mean, I always just look at shitty weather. Like,
- 3:27Speaker 6: I like the shitty weather days because most other people don't.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Or like the good bad weather where it's like November
- 3:34Speaker 1: 10 and it's 70 degrees and everyone's like, oh, you can't,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you know, the deer aren't moving now.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Good point.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So the good bad weather, same thing.
- 3:40Speaker 4: Cat Grizz game in Montana. It's a good one.
- 3:43Speaker 1: There you go.
- 3:44Speaker 4: It's also good because you can. Stop by local bars
- 3:48Speaker 4: like mid-afternoon and they might have a full spread set out.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:55Speaker 2: If you're able to, holidays are good too. Thanksgiving, Christmas,
- 3:59Speaker 2: New Year's Day is an excellent time.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah. There's been some studies done by Auburn University, Dr.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Stephen Ditchcoff. He talked about this in other podcasts before,
- 4:10Speaker 1: but that Thursdays, are the best days of the week
- 4:14Speaker 1: on public land. That's when deer movement is the most normal.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday, they get pounded. Monday, Tuesday, they're recovering. Wednesday,
- 4:22Speaker 1: it's like creeping back to normal. And then Thursday is
- 4:24Speaker 1: like the most normal that it gets out there.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Not anymore.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Well, yeah, we've now ruined it. I think, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 1: this is like the fifth podcast that that's been set on,
- 4:32Speaker 1: but it's just, you know, good advice in general. Thursdays
- 4:35Speaker 1: are when the studies show that deer are on their
- 4:38Speaker 1: feet the most. Anything else for Steven in Minnesota? All right.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Good luck, Steven.
- 4:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Before housekeeping today, Randall is going to give us a
- 4:49Speaker 1: live tour update. Randall, what's happening with the live tour?
- 4:52Speaker 1: It's canceled?
- 4:54Speaker 4: No, it's actually on. It's on.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think Fargo has any tickets left.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I got to go back. My phone's in airplane mode.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I checked on who was playing Monday Night Football and
- 5:06Speaker 4: it screwed everything up. Okay. So live tour, Grand Rapids, Michigan,
- 5:11Speaker 4: December 14th. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the 15th. Madison, Wisconsin. I don't
- 5:17Speaker 4: need to say the date every time. The following day,
- 5:19Speaker 4: Des Moines, Iowa. Minneapolis, Minnesota. And Fargo, North Dakota.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Who are you most excited for? Pick one. Don't be like, oh,
- 5:27Speaker 1: they're all fun. I love everybody.
- 5:29Speaker 4: You know, I'm very excited for Milwaukee and Madison. Oh,
- 5:33Speaker 4: me too. I just think, good. That's our people. Okay.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I mean, they're all our people. But Milwaukee, I think
- 5:40Speaker 4: just Wisconsin. Wisconsinites. are a different breed, I feel like.
- 5:44Speaker 4: We have a lot of love in the house for Wisconsinites.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yanni, which stop are you most excited for?
- 5:48Speaker 5: I mean, Grand Rapids will be good because that's hometown
- 5:55Speaker 5: pretty much, 45 minutes from where I grew up, and
- 5:57Speaker 5: so we'll have a warm welcome there. Yeah, I don't know.
- 6:02Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Spencer. They're all going to be great fun.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Bill has been scouting tiki locations already.
- 6:08Speaker 7: I mean, that's why Milwaukee is the site I'm looking
- 6:11Speaker 7: forward to. There's a bar there called Foundation that I
- 6:14Speaker 7: have not visited yet.
- 6:16Speaker 4: There's also a sausage place I have recs for.
- 6:18Speaker 7: Everyone's invited. Everyone in the crowd, you're invited too.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Is it you, Singers?
- 6:25Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I have to check my DMs.
- 6:28Speaker 4: No, I don't want to do that. I feel like
- 6:30Speaker 4: that's boring. TheMeatEater.com slash events. Go on there to find
- 6:35Speaker 4: your tickets. Don't go to these weird reselling sites where
- 6:39Speaker 4: they jack up the prices. I've seen in the comments
- 6:43Speaker 4: on all of our social media, I've seen some people
- 6:46Speaker 4: saying they got charged X amount, they got charged Y amount.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Go directly to the website. They'll take you to the venue. Whatever, whatever.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Follow trusted websites when buying tickets. Okay. That's all I'll say.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Randall's the secondary market, actually.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Was that sufficiently? You did it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: You did it.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Good, good, good.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Now we have some real housekeeping. On a previous episode
- 7:04Speaker 1: of Trivia, I had a question about the 10-letter word
- 7:06Speaker 1: for the small tool used by hunters to track air currents.
- 7:10Speaker 1: The correct answer was windicator, but a few listeners wrote
- 7:13Speaker 1: in to say that there is another correct answer, which
- 7:16Speaker 1: is an anemometer. Anemometer is defined as, quote, an instrument
- 7:22Speaker 1: used to measure wind speed, force, and airflow, and it
- 7:25Speaker 1: is 10 letters. So those listeners are right. If you
- 7:28Speaker 1: said anemometer, give yourself a point.
- 7:31Speaker 4: I had a follow-up to that that I forgot about.
- 7:34Speaker 4: The other windicator we used in Austria? Bubbles. No way.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Like little kids' bubbles. What? That's cute.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Up in the stand, take out the little thing of bubbles.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Huh.
- 7:46Speaker 4: And then you can see.
- 7:46Speaker 1: You can watch that thing glide.
- 7:47Speaker 4: As they drift away, you can see if the wind's
- 7:50Speaker 4: turning or swirling or whatever.
- 7:52Speaker 1: That's a hot tip.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I wonder if you like put some food coloring in there,
- 7:55Speaker 1: if you'd like see it even further.
- 7:56Speaker 4: And it's so delightful.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:58Speaker 4: It's just fun. It adds like a little childish glee.
- 8:01Speaker 5: But it would only work in habitat where there's like
- 8:04Speaker 5: very little trees, brush or whatever, because.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean.
- 8:10Speaker 1: But that's with any wind decatur.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Milkweed.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Get hung up on stuff.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:15Speaker 4: Okay. Okay, don't blow bubbles in the woods, Yanni. Have
- 8:19Speaker 4: it your way.
- 8:20Speaker 5: No, I'm just like, it just seems like they would
- 8:23Speaker 5: very quickly pop.
- 8:26Speaker 4: You're covering an area. You just got to blow a lot.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Do they have a hunt specific vessel for these?
- 8:34Speaker 2: There's a marketing, a real product opportunity.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 5: I'm a little surprised that it's not like a whitetail thing.
- 8:42Speaker 5: I could just see Mark up in a saddle.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Yeah, man. Nick, for our next April Fool's skit for
- 8:50Speaker 1: our social media.
- 8:51Speaker 4: You know how they make the little wand that has
- 8:55Speaker 4: different shapes?
- 8:56Speaker 5: Yes.
- 8:56Speaker 2: You make a little shape of a buck and you
- 8:59Speaker 2: blow through.
- 8:59Speaker 6: All right.
- 9:00Speaker 1: That's a windicator with a lot of whimsy.
- 9:02Speaker 4: Writing that down.
- 9:03Speaker 1: The Shelby Index for today is a four, so our
- 9:05Speaker 1: winner should get eight correct answers. And with that, we're
- 9:07Speaker 1: on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Look, I need to know what I stand to win
- 9:15Speaker 4: to everything. Just tend to win everything.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Game on, suckers! Question one, the topic is biology. This
- 9:31Speaker 1: first great question is via Justin Andrews, and as always,
- 9:34Speaker 1: it will be multiple choice. Dendrology is the study of blank.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Is it fungi, snakes, trees, or insects? Dendrology, D-E-N-D-R-O-L-O-G-Y, is
- 9:55Speaker 1: the study of, is it fungi, snakes? trees, or insects?
- 10:02Speaker 1: And Justin Andrews, he sent me this question all the
- 10:05Speaker 1: way back in 2022. So for the listeners who are
- 10:08Speaker 1: worried that they haven't heard their question yet, just know
- 10:10Speaker 1: it's never too late. You could send one today and
- 10:13Speaker 1: in 2030 on a show, I'm going to read that question.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Dendrology is the study of, Blank.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Are you going to be doing this in 2030?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Fungi, snakes, trees, insects.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Well, I'll be in walkers and canes and stuff.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Randall, I don't think he even needed the choices on
- 10:35Speaker 1: this one. Brody, do you know this one?
- 10:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Okay, Mark, you know this one. Maybe.
- 10:41Speaker 5: I've got it narrowed down to two if you're wondering, Spencer.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I was wondering.
- 10:45Speaker 2: At least I'm very calm.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Dendrology is the study of fungi, snakes, trees, or insects.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I probably got it wrong. If I didn't have the choices,
- 10:58Speaker 4: I would have said something else.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, the choices help us. Everybody ready?
- 11:02Speaker 4: I would have been in the neighborhood.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says trees. Mark, fungi. Yanni, snakes. Reva, fungi. Nick, insects. Brody, trees.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Every one of the answers was represented. The correct answer
- 11:21Speaker 1: is trees. Brody and Randall got that one right.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Ice process of elimination.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Mycology is the study of fungi. Serpentology is the study
- 11:31Speaker 1: of snakes. Entomology is the study of insects. And dendrology
- 11:37Speaker 1: is the study of trees, shrubs, and other woody plants.
- 11:40Speaker 1: The term comes from the Greek word dendron, which means tree.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I would have said herpetology for snakes.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I think that's a broader term.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Serpentology is sweet.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Question two, the topic is fishing. Superstitious anglers going back
- 11:56Speaker 1: to the 1700s have said that it's bad luck to
- 11:59Speaker 1: bring this fruit onto a boat.
- 12:03Speaker 2: We've never had this.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Never done this one.
- 12:07Speaker 4: That was amazing.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I did something similar many years ago. I could tell
- 12:10Speaker 1: you about it after this question, but I don't want
- 12:12Speaker 1: to give.
- 12:12Speaker 4: You any hints.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Do you guys all respect this rule?
- 12:15Speaker 5: No.
- 12:15Speaker 4: No.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I used to mess with my clients when they.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Yeah. It's more like for funny banter. Yeah.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Captain Randall, you didn't have any strict rules about this.
- 12:27Speaker 4: No.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Like if your clients really sucked, that's why.
- 12:32Speaker 4: No, it actually, I think, I think I learned about
- 12:36Speaker 4: this because I brought this on a boat.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Bad captain.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Yeah. But then it didn't bother me. because i didn't
- 12:45Speaker 4: believe in.
- 12:46Speaker 1: It okay superstitious anglers going back to the 1700s have
- 12:50Speaker 1: said that it's bad luck to bring this fruit onto
- 12:53Speaker 1: a boat but i got razzed is everybody ready.
- 12:56Speaker 6: I'm surprised it goes back that far though there's a
- 12:59Speaker 6: reason after this oh.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Geez go ahead and reveal your answers we have the
- 13:04Speaker 1: whole room saying banana the whole room got it right
- 13:07Speaker 1: the correct answer is bananas This nautical superstition has been
- 13:12Speaker 1: shared by boaters across the globe for hundreds of years,
- 13:15Speaker 1: and it's not totally unfounded. Bananas release gas as they ripen,
- 13:19Speaker 1: and on old wooden ships, this could cause other food
- 13:22Speaker 1: to rot quickly. And because of their shortened lifetime, it's
- 13:25Speaker 1: said that boats carrying them would try to sail faster,
- 13:28Speaker 1: which made for riskier trips. So maybe it wasn't a
- 13:31Speaker 1: total coincidence when boats with bananas seemed to have more
- 13:34Speaker 1: bad luck.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I got another reason that I heard. Hmm. When they
- 13:38Speaker 2: would come across floating, like, whatever you called, they'd be like,
- 13:43Speaker 2: the ship sunk. Bananas are floating.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Bananas would make it.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Yeah, bananas do make other things stink. I remember very
- 13:51Speaker 4: vividly on a camping trip as a kid having a
- 13:53Speaker 4: box of Captain Crunch ruined by banana stink.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Oh, wow. I didn't know it was that powerful.
- 13:58Speaker 4: You know, like, if you have bananas in a cooler
- 14:01Speaker 4: with something and the bananas start to turn and everything
- 14:02Speaker 4: just tastes like bananas?
- 14:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Did this to Captain Crunch.
- 14:06Speaker 1: The question that I had that was similar to this
- 14:08Speaker 1: many years ago was something about this underwear brand is
- 14:11Speaker 1: not allowed on some boats because of their logo. It
- 14:14Speaker 1: was Fruit of the Loom.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Captain Crunch's real name is Horatio Magellan Crunch.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I just wanted you to know that.
- 14:20Speaker 7: Incredible fun fact.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Question three. The topic is hunting. This next great question
- 14:24Speaker 1: is via Daxton Clatworthy. Otis accidentally shoots Carl while whitetail
- 14:31Speaker 1: hunting in a 2011 episode of this post-apocalyptic show. Randall
- 14:40Speaker 1: and Brody. I think they have the perfect game. Still going.
- 14:45Speaker 1: They have their answer for number three. Otis accidentally shoots
- 14:49Speaker 1: Carl while whitetail hunting in a 2011 episode of this
- 14:53Speaker 1: post-apocalyptic show. Nick Glenn, do you have this one right?
- 14:58Speaker 4: I believe so.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Have you seen this show?
- 15:00Speaker 4: I believe so.
- 15:02Speaker 1: You think you've seen this show?
- 15:03Speaker 4: If it's right, then yes. I have no idea if
- 15:08Speaker 4: mine's right.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Reva, do you have this one right?
- 15:11Speaker 3: No.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Otis accidentally shoots Carl while whitetail hunting in a 2011
- 15:17Speaker 1: episode of this post-apocalyptic show. Randall's uncapping his marker, thinking
- 15:23Speaker 1: about picking up his whiteboard.
- 15:24Speaker 4: I just thought of another post-apocalyptic show.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Oh, geez. Phil, can you give us a review of
- 15:30Speaker 1: this show after the answer is revealed? Do you have
- 15:33Speaker 1: an opinion on it?
- 15:34Speaker 7: I mean, I can give an opinion without spoiling anything,
- 15:35Speaker 7: which is that I watched the first two seasons and
- 15:37Speaker 7: checked out.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 15:38Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 15:41Speaker 6: Knowing what we know about Phil, is that a clue
- 15:43Speaker 6: of somewhere?
- 15:45Speaker 1: If it is and hasn't helped Yanni.
- 15:46Speaker 7: It didn't have.
- 15:47Speaker 4: Enough nudity in it, so Phil was out.
- 15:51Speaker 1: There we go.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Crass language and nudity.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Yanni, can you name any post-apocalyptic shows? Picking up his whiteboard.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Otis accidentally shoots Carl while whitetail hunting. in a 2011
- 16:09Speaker 1: episode of this post-apocalyptic show? Great question here from Daxton.
- 16:18Speaker 4: I have another one, but I think it's too recent.
- 16:20Speaker 1: This is a doozy.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Oh, jeez.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Yanni, are you ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Randall says Walking Dead. Mark, The Walking Dead. Yanni? Dead
- 16:33Speaker 1: Men Walking. That's the Sean Penn film, isn't it? The
- 16:37Speaker 1: Great Value brand.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Or no.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Reva says Metalocalypse. Metalocalypse.
- 16:43Speaker 7: Oh, good answer.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Nick, Walking Dead. Brody, The Walking Dead. The correct answer
- 16:48Speaker 1: is The Walking Dead. The accident happens in the season
- 16:52Speaker 1: two premiere of the show. Twelve-year-old Carl is walking through
- 16:55Speaker 1: the forest when he comes upon a giant velvet buck.
- 16:59Speaker 1: He amazingly sneaks to within just a couple yards of
- 17:01Speaker 1: the deer and When a shot rings out, the bullet
- 17:04Speaker 1: rips through the buck's chest before hitting Carl in the abdomen.
- 17:08Speaker 1: The whitetail dies, but Carl survives thanks to emergency treatment
- 17:11Speaker 1: from a veterinarian. Question four, the topic is wildlife. A
- 17:18Speaker 1: 2018 study in a biophysics journal theorized that this seven-letter
- 17:24Speaker 1: animal is actually an alien that arrived here on a
- 17:27Speaker 1: comet in egg form 270 million years ago. A 2018
- 17:36Speaker 1: study in a biophysics journal theorized that this seven-letter animal
- 17:42Speaker 1: is actually an alien that arrived here on a comet
- 17:45Speaker 1: in egg form 270 million years ago. Randall and Brody
- 17:51Speaker 1: are playing hangman and they've done some erasing. That animal
- 17:54Speaker 1: didn't have seven letters, huh?
- 17:56Speaker 4: No, it had eight. It would have been a good one, too.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I think we should be right.
- 18:04Speaker 1: A 2018 study in a biophysics journal theorized that this
- 18:09Speaker 1: seven-letter animal is actually an alien that arrived here on
- 18:12Speaker 1: a comet in egg form 270 million years ago. Nick
- 18:17Speaker 1: is the only player who likes his answer.
- 18:19Speaker 4: He's grinning.
- 18:19Speaker 1: He's nodding. You got seven-letter animal over there that you
- 18:23Speaker 1: think could be an alien.
- 18:24Speaker 3: It's a seven-letter animal, that's for sure. That's why I
- 18:28Speaker 3: keep checking my board to make sure.
- 18:29Speaker 4: That I spelled it right. Any hints?
- 18:34Speaker 1: I've told you everything you need to know. Riva, do
- 18:37Speaker 1: you have this one right?
- 18:39Speaker 2: I feel fairly confident.
- 18:40Speaker 4: Okay. Wow.
- 18:42Speaker 5: But I don't know.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Riva and Nick are other four players, though. Don't have it.
- 18:48Speaker 1: A 2018 study in a biophysics journal.
- 18:50Speaker 2: This is like a legit study.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Peer-reviewed. I'll tell you about it in the flavor text.
- 18:56Speaker 4: A 2018 study.
- 18:58Speaker 1: In a biophysics journal, theorized that this seven-letter animal is
- 19:01Speaker 1: actually an alien that arrived here on a comet in
- 19:03Speaker 1: egg form 270 million years ago.
- 19:06Speaker 5: How'd you find this question?
- 19:08Speaker 1: I've been vaguely aware of this study for a while,
- 19:11Speaker 1: and I finally just made it into some content. I'm
- 19:16Speaker 1: surprised more people don't have guesses. Yeah, good for you, Reva.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Get them.
- 19:24Speaker 1: This is question four.
- 19:25Speaker 4: It's going to be us on the rest of the questions, though.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Yanni hasn't done any writing yet. You just throwing the
- 19:34Speaker 1: white flag.
- 19:34Speaker 4: On this one, Yanni?
- 19:38Speaker 5: I mean, I know a lot of seven-lettered animals, but
- 19:42Speaker 5: not ones that would be, considered aliens, I don't think.
- 19:47Speaker 1: A lot of weird noises from the crew today. Not
- 19:57Speaker 1: even Nick. They got this one. You guys should show
- 19:59Speaker 1: each other your whiteboard. Oh, and do you agree? Okay,
- 20:02Speaker 1: that's fun.
- 20:03Speaker 6: This is amazing. Two that are so confident in the
- 20:07Speaker 6: rest of us.
- 20:07Speaker 1: They know they're UFOs. Randall, do you have a seven-letter animal?
- 20:16Speaker 4: I have a seven-letter animal.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 20:18Speaker 4: And I don't like it. I think it's an okay answer.
- 20:23Speaker 4: I just don't like the animal.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Yanni, Mark, are you ready? I got nothing. Sure. Go
- 20:34Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Randall saying octopus.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Mark and Yanni without an answer. Reva and Nick say octopus.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Brody says penguin.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Platypus. That was my first answer.
- 20:48Speaker 1: The correct answer is octopus. Half of our players got
- 20:52Speaker 1: that one right.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 20:55Speaker 1: This is known as the panspermia theory, which says that
- 20:59Speaker 1: life exists around the universe and is distributed by space debris.
- 21:03Speaker 1: The hypothesis was first suggested by a Greek philosopher who
- 21:07Speaker 1: believed meteors contained cosmic seeds that bounced around between planets.
- 21:11Speaker 1: The 2018 peer-reviewed study specifically called out the octopus as
- 21:15Speaker 1: being a potential alien. They argued that frozen octopus eggs
- 21:19Speaker 1: attached to a comet might explain the mysterious creature, but
- 21:23Speaker 1: mainstream scientists were very critical of the paper, saying it
- 21:26Speaker 1: lacks any basic evidence.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Yeah, that sounds reasonable.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Could be 270 million years ago, though a comet with
- 21:34Speaker 1: frozen octopus eggs hit the ocean, and that's where we're
- 21:38Speaker 1: at today.
- 21:38Speaker 4: I guess we'll never know.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Question five. The topic is conservation. This next great question
- 21:44Speaker 1: is via Brian Clement. The pallid blank, which is considered
- 21:50Speaker 1: one of the most endangered fish in North America, was
- 21:53Speaker 1: added to the endangered species list in 1990. Brody, Randall, Mark, Yanni.
- 22:02Speaker 1: They all got it. But our UFO experts, Nick and Reva,
- 22:09Speaker 1: do not. The pallid blank, which is considered one of
- 22:14Speaker 1: the most endangered fish in North America, was added to
- 22:18Speaker 1: the endangered species list in 1990. The pallid blank. This
- 22:25Speaker 1: is question five. We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil,
- 22:28Speaker 1: the engineer, after this. By the way, next month, our
- 22:34Speaker 1: next five episodes, we have guest host month. All your
- 22:37Speaker 1: favorite Meteor trivia players are going to be in the
- 22:40Speaker 1: driver's seat. Yanni is up first, but we got an
- 22:42Speaker 1: episode from Brody, from Randall, from Mark, from Nate. It's
- 22:46Speaker 1: going to be a lot of fun.
- 22:47Speaker 7: I wasn't asked to return.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Why is that? Oh, you can host mine if you want.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Oh, you hosted one, Phil?
- 22:53Speaker 2: I've hosted two.
- 22:54Speaker 5: I've said I've missed both of those.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Phil, I would love for you to host. I'm on
- 22:59Speaker 1: the 12th.
- 22:59Speaker 4: You can have that.
- 23:01Speaker 7: I think I might be busy that time.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Was the D & D thing for trivia or something else?
- 23:08Speaker 7: That was for trivia. That was just a fun surprise
- 23:10Speaker 7: that everyone enjoyed.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Right? I think I won, but I still have trauma.
- 23:17Speaker 4: One of my greatest regrets in life is missing that day.
- 23:20Speaker 1: That was bad. Bad for Randall.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Great from Phil.
- 23:23Speaker 1: The pallid blank, which is considered one of the most
- 23:26Speaker 1: endangered fish in North America, was added to the endangered
- 23:29Speaker 1: species list in 1990. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 23:34Speaker 1: We have Randall and Mark and Yanni. The whole room
- 23:38Speaker 1: says sturgeon. The whole room got it right. It's the
- 23:41Speaker 1: pallid sturgeon. Pallid sturgeon are native to the Missouri and
- 23:45Speaker 1: Mississippi River watersheds. They grow up to six feet long
- 23:49Speaker 1: and 80 pounds. Their populations have cratered in the last
- 23:52Speaker 1: 100 years due to dam construction and habitat loss. It's
- 23:56Speaker 1: estimated that the upper stretch of their native range, there
- 24:00Speaker 1: are fewer than 50 adult fish remaining. There is me
- 24:03Speaker 1: with a pallet surgeon.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Sick haircut.
- 24:05Speaker 1: That had been like circa, I don't know, 2014.
- 24:08Speaker 5: It's like the same haircut the kids are wearing now.
- 24:10Speaker 1: God, I was doing it first.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I was reading about one of those suckers that took
- 24:14Speaker 2: a left out of the Yellowstone in eastern Montana and
- 24:17Speaker 2: went like 150 miles up the Powder River. Which if
- 24:21Speaker 2: you've seen the Powder River, it's like, how did he
- 24:23Speaker 2: get that far?
- 24:25Speaker 4: I like your glasses too.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 24:27Speaker 4: It's like you're playing second base.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Those are my river working days.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Get them on the reds.
- 24:34Speaker 1: All right, Phil, we're halfway through today's game. Give us
- 24:36Speaker 1: a scoreboard update.
- 24:38Speaker 7: My mouse will work.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 24:41Speaker 7: We do have a perfect game on the board.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Dr.
- 24:43Speaker 7: Randall's got five points. Nick and Brody are a point
- 24:46Speaker 7: behind him.
- 24:46Speaker 2: No, Randall got one wrong.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Uh-uh. No, I got them all right.
- 24:49Speaker 6: I tried.
- 24:50Speaker 2: I tried.
- 24:52Speaker 7: Nick and Brody have four. Mark Kenyon has... Oh, wait.
- 24:56Speaker 7: Mark and Reva have three. Giannis Patelis is in last
- 24:58Speaker 7: place with two points.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Are you sure?
- 25:00Speaker 1: Only two?
- 25:01Speaker 7: Two measly points. I'm 99% sure.
- 25:03Speaker 4: I did that once. Don't worry about it.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yanni got bananas and he got pallet sturgeon.
- 25:10Speaker 5: That's it.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Phil, aren't you going to rub it in that you
- 25:14Speaker 2: never get it wrong?
- 25:15Speaker 7: Giannis, I'm always right. Don't question me.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Question six. The topic is gear. This next great question
- 25:25Speaker 1: is via Andrew Heatherwick. This Austrian gun maker who is
- 25:30Speaker 1: best known for their pistols announced in 2024 that they'd
- 25:34Speaker 1: no longer be selling horse semen. This seems right in
- 25:39Speaker 1: your lane, Randall.
- 25:40Speaker 5: My gosh, Randall, if you don't know this.
- 25:43Speaker 1: This Austrian gun maker, who is best known for their pistols,
- 25:48Speaker 1: announced in 2024 that they'd no longer be selling horse semen.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Best known for their pistols. Best known for their pistols.
- 26:00Speaker 1: This Austrian gun maker, who is best known for their pistols,
- 26:03Speaker 1: announced in 2024 that they'd no longer be selling horse semen. Randall,
- 26:10Speaker 1: do you have this one right?
- 26:12Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 26:13Speaker 1: How many Austrian gun makers can you.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Name, you think? I mean, I have two down right now.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:22Speaker 4: The horse semen is what's throwing me off. I don't
- 26:26Speaker 4: think I've ever purchased horse semen from an Austrian gun maker.
- 26:33Speaker 1: He thinks. You're more of a German horse semen guy.
- 26:36Speaker 4: Now the Swiss tell you what.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I wonder if they also sell guns with which to
- 26:44Speaker 2: implant the horse semen.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Interesting.
- 26:47Speaker 1: This Austrian gun maker who is best known for their
- 26:50Speaker 1: pistols announced in 2024 that they'd no longer be selling
- 26:54Speaker 1: horse semen.
- 26:55Speaker 6: What I want to know is what kind of rabbit
- 26:57Speaker 6: hole led you to this? Were you Googling pistols or semen?
- 26:59Speaker 1: The rabbit hole was Andrew Heatherwick sending me this great question. Okay,
- 27:03Speaker 1: Andrew did it. Well, same question to him.
- 27:06Speaker 4: I just, yeah. I feel like if it's not what
- 27:12Speaker 4: I think it is, it's too esoteric for most of
- 27:15Speaker 4: the room.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 27:17Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Do our other players give up? Go ahead and reveal
- 27:24Speaker 1: your answers. Randall says Glock, Mark, Taurus, Yanni, Colt, Reva,
- 27:30Speaker 1: Nick without an answer, Brody, H, and K. The correct
- 27:34Speaker 1: answer is Glock. Randall. Oh, my God. I'm not sure.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. Glock, which started selling guns in 1982, created
- 27:44Speaker 1: a branch of their business dedicated to horses in 2010.
- 27:47Speaker 1: The Glock Horse Performance Center was a high-profile training and
- 27:52Speaker 1: breeding operation that became one of the powerhouses of dressage.
- 27:56Speaker 1: But after Glock's founder died in 2023, the family announced
- 28:01Speaker 1: that they'd be shuttering the equine side of their business.
- 28:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I figured that... Yeah, the date lined up with
- 28:08Speaker 4: the family... What not.
- 28:11Speaker 1: They had a good run as the premier dressage.
- 28:15Speaker 4: They have a big facility in Furlock. Glock does. Yes.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Well, I think they used to, but I think it's
- 28:20Speaker 1: like since their announcement, they've been moving away from it.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And they said by 2026, all will be out of
- 28:25Speaker 1: the Glock name.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Not the semen. The guns.
- 28:30Speaker 1: The guns.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. No, the guns.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Question seven. The topic is fishing.
- 28:37Speaker 5: Oh, man.
- 28:38Speaker 1: This six letter word is defined as, quote, a small,
- 28:42Speaker 1: low powered auxiliary outboard engine mounted on a boat's transom
- 28:47Speaker 1: next to the primary engine. Randall and Brody, they got it. Yanni,
- 28:55Speaker 1: he thinks he has it. This six letter word is
- 29:00Speaker 1: defined as a small, low powered auxiliary outboard engine mounted
- 29:05Speaker 1: on a boat's transom next to the primary engine.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I got one of these I need to sell.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Has your bear rug sold yet?
- 29:15Speaker 4: Yep. Oh, it did.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Congratulations.
- 29:18Speaker 5: Did you sell it through the store? How'd you do it?
- 29:20Speaker 1: Did you have to come down off of your original ask?
- 29:24Speaker 2: Well, I mean, there's always some haggling involved.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:28Speaker 1: All right. Now you can find Brody's this thing at
- 29:31Speaker 1: the store next.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Yeah. You should put it. In the window.
- 29:37Speaker 1: This six-letter word is defined as, quote, a small, low-powered
- 29:42Speaker 1: auxiliary outboard engine mounted on a boat's transom next to
- 29:46Speaker 1: the primary engine. Randall switched up his seat today because
- 29:50Speaker 1: the other one's been bad luck.
- 29:51Speaker 4: It has.
- 29:52Speaker 1: And now Yanni, who's in last place, is in the
- 29:55Speaker 1: bad luck seat.
- 29:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know if I shared this on On
- 29:59Speaker 4: the air, but I had someone the other day greet
- 30:02Speaker 4: me and said, you used to be so good at trivia. Oh, no.
- 30:07Speaker 4: That's mean. I figured desperate times.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Are you done with stats of the week?
- 30:12Speaker 1: I think I'm done with stats.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Really? Yeah.
- 30:14Speaker 1: We've seen all the stats by now. I'd rather answer
- 30:17Speaker 1: the listener questions that they have. Six-letter word is defined
- 30:22Speaker 1: as a small, low-powered auxiliary outboard engine mounted on a
- 30:25Speaker 1: boat's transom next to the primary engine. Is everybody ready?
- 30:30Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says, kicker. Mark
- 30:34Speaker 1: without an answer. Yanni, kicker. Reva and Nick without an answer. Brody, kicker.
- 30:39Speaker 1: The correct answer is kicker.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Nick, I understand it's your first time, but you came
- 30:44Speaker 2: in here hard on the fishing thing. Hey, I'm on boats, saltwater.
- 30:48Speaker 4: We don't really call them kickers.
- 30:50Speaker 1: What do you call them?
- 30:51Speaker 3: It's just like a trolling motor or like the outboard motor.
- 30:55Speaker 3: I was just trying to think if something was six
- 30:56Speaker 3: and nothing came.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Kicker motors range from five horsepower to 25 horsepower with
- 31:02Speaker 1: 9.9 being the most popular choice. By not going above
- 31:06Speaker 1: 10 horsepower, the engine skirts rules regarding registration and horsepower limits.
- 31:11Speaker 1: The purpose of a kicker is to give anglers low
- 31:14Speaker 1: speed control of the boat while also having a reliable
- 31:17Speaker 1: emergency backup motor. What horsepower is yours, Brody?
- 31:21Speaker 4: 9.9? 0.5?
- 31:22Speaker 1: We're on to question eight. The topic is conservation. Timbuktu,
- 31:28Speaker 1: which is a real city on this continent, was a
- 31:31Speaker 1: hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Am I spelling right?
- 31:39Speaker 1: Timbuktu, which is a real city on this continent, was
- 31:43Speaker 1: a hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries. Randall,
- 31:49Speaker 1: do you just know this one? Or are you taking
- 31:51Speaker 1: a guess?
- 31:52Speaker 4: I knew this. I also feel like there's Only a
- 31:56Speaker 4: few to choose from. And there's some sufficient context in
- 32:01Speaker 4: the question.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Timbuktu, which is a real city on this continent, was
- 32:06Speaker 1: a hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries.
- 32:10Speaker 1: That's a man who's confident in his position on the scoreboard.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Just handing out all those hints.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Is it a hint?
- 32:19Speaker 1: I guess.
- 32:20Speaker 4: I mean, the continents, yeah.
- 32:22Speaker 2: I can't catch them anyway. I'm leaving my answer the
- 32:24Speaker 2: way it is.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Timbuktu, which is a real city on this continent, was
- 32:29Speaker 1: a hub for the global ivory trade for three centuries. Mark,
- 32:34Speaker 1: you know this one? Eh, just a guess.
- 32:37Speaker 4: I bet it's a good one.
- 32:39Speaker 1: We'll get another scoreboard update from Phil after this. Is
- 32:41Speaker 1: everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says Africa. Mark, Africa. Yanni, Africa. Reva, Africa.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Nick, Africa.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Brody, Asia. The correct answer is Africa. The room did well.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Africa.
- 32:58Speaker 1: From the 13th to 16th century, Timbuktu was one of
- 33:01Speaker 1: the wealthiest and most influential trading hubs in the world.
- 33:05Speaker 1: It trafficked everything, but its main economy was gold, salt, ivory, silks, grain, horses,
- 33:11Speaker 1: and books. Timbuktu is located where the Sahara Desert meets
- 33:15Speaker 1: the Niger River, which historians called the, quote, camel meets
- 33:19Speaker 1: canoe crossroads. Its proximity to Africa's elephant-rich interior specifically made
- 33:25Speaker 1: it an epicenter for ivory trade. Artville, two questions left.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Let's see the scoreboard. Oh, there was two. Dang it.
- 33:34Speaker 7: Randall caused a bit of an anticlimactic game here because
- 33:37Speaker 7: he's locked up the victory.
- 33:39Speaker 4: With eight points.
- 33:39Speaker 7: He's three points ahead of the second-place players, who are
- 33:43Speaker 7: Brody and Nick with five points, and then Giannis, Mark,
- 33:46Speaker 7: and Riva.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Tight up with four. I hope I don't blow it
- 33:49Speaker 4: at the end.
- 33:49Speaker 1: See if you can get a perfect game and double
- 33:52Speaker 1: the donation to $ 1, 000. That's what I mean. Question nine.
- 33:55Speaker 1: The topic is cooking. This is our listener question of
- 33:57Speaker 1: the week, which was won by David Hayes for sending
- 33:59Speaker 1: this great question. David is going to get a $ 150
- 34:02Speaker 1: First Light gift card. If you want a chance to
- 34:04Speaker 1: win the listener question of the week, then send your
- 34:06Speaker 1: question to trivia at themeateater.com. This figurative and literal culinary
- 34:12Speaker 1: phrase says that you should, quote, boil the piss out
- 34:16Speaker 1: of blank. when cooking these organs. This figurative and literal
- 34:25Speaker 1: culinary phrase says that you should boil the piss out
- 34:29Speaker 1: of blank when cooking these organs. Randall and Brody, they
- 34:35Speaker 1: have their answers. You boys have this one, right?
- 34:38Speaker 4: I think so.
- 34:40Speaker 7: Spencer sent me a picture of the location of Timbuktu,
- 34:43Speaker 7: and so I'm just going to bring that up.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, there it is. In case you're wondering, we're
- 34:46Speaker 1: on the globe. Timbuktu is located. Now you got it.
- 34:49Speaker 1: You can see where the desert comes right up and
- 34:53Speaker 1: butts up against the green. That's what made its location
- 34:55Speaker 1: for trade so special.
- 34:58Speaker 4: I wanted to make a joke about the camel canoe crossroads.
- 35:02Speaker 1: What's the joke?
- 35:03Speaker 4: Well, it's going to be something to do with cigarettes, but.
- 35:05Speaker 1: I haven't gotten there yet. Okay, you think on that.
- 35:11Speaker 1: This figurative and literal culinary phrase. Says that you should
- 35:15Speaker 1: boil the piss out of blank when cooking these organs.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Sounds like something Steve would say.
- 35:23Speaker 1: The culinary phrase or the camel thing?
- 35:26Speaker 4: No, not the camel thing. Yeah, that's too highbrow.
- 35:33Speaker 1: This figurative and literal culinary phrase says that you should
- 35:36Speaker 1: boil the piss out of blank when cooking these organs.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Yanni is hosting next week.
- 35:44Speaker 5: Is the answer what those organs are?
- 35:46Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Hmm. He's stumped.
- 35:53Speaker 4: What was your answer? Did you have one?
- 35:57Speaker 1: No.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Does this mean there's more?
- 35:59Speaker 4: I got so many.
- 36:00Speaker 2: No, I'm going to leave it. Doesn't matter.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Yanni is hosting next week. Yanni, how are you feeling
- 36:06Speaker 1: about that episode? You like your questions that you wrote?
- 36:08Speaker 5: Yeah, Jennifer said they were fun.
- 36:10Speaker 1: All right. That's nice. Do you have an answer to
- 36:14Speaker 1: this one?
- 36:14Speaker 5: She wouldn't lie.
- 36:15Speaker 4: I'm excited for that episode.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Spencer, we were having a debate. When I host, if
- 36:19Speaker 2: my goal is to have three people get a perfect
- 36:22Speaker 2: game for a tiebreaker, would you be mad if I
- 36:25Speaker 2: did that?
- 36:25Speaker 6: No, do that.
- 36:26Speaker 1: That would be fun. That's why it's fun to have
- 36:29Speaker 1: the guest host, because you guys just bring some different
- 36:31Speaker 1: flavor than what you get every other week of the year.
- 36:34Speaker 4: I'm thinking about doing all of my questions about Ace
- 36:38Speaker 4: Ventura 1 and 2. Okay.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I'll study up then.
- 36:43Speaker 4: Great movie.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Waiting on Yanni down there.
- 36:45Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, yeah, let's go.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. Randall says kidneys. Mark, kidneys,
- 36:51Speaker 1: Yanni bladder, Reva liver, Nick kidneys, Brody kidneys. The correct
- 36:56Speaker 1: answer is kidneys. Urine is made in the kidneys, and
- 37:01Speaker 1: that pungent smell can be noticeable when cooking. To prevent this,
- 37:05Speaker 1: it's recommended that you trim the kidneys, then soak them
- 37:08Speaker 1: in milk overnight, then boil them two to three times
- 37:11Speaker 1: for five minutes each. For a classic kidney dish, check
- 37:14Speaker 1: out Daniel Pruitt's venison steak and kidney pie recipe on TheMeatEater.com.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Never eaten them.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Has anybody? I don't think I have either.
- 37:23Speaker 4: Yeah, the only memory I have of it is it
- 37:26Speaker 4: just tasted like I buried my head in urine-soaked straw
- 37:34Speaker 4: in a barn. That was the number one. It was
- 37:37Speaker 4: just like it tasted the way that It smells when
- 37:40Speaker 4: you walk into a barn where they haven't changed out
- 37:42Speaker 4: the head.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Did the cook know what they were doing? Apparently they
- 37:44Speaker 1: did not do that. I don't know.
- 37:45Speaker 4: Okay. I don't know. I was giving him the benefit
- 37:48Speaker 4: of the doubt until now, but it seems like there
- 37:49Speaker 4: is a way to get rid of the piss.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Boil the piss out of him. All right, here's the
- 37:52Speaker 1: correct answer review so far. One was dendrology is the
- 37:55Speaker 1: study of trees. Two, bananas. Three, the walking dead. Four, octopus. Five, sturgeon. Six, glock. Seven,
- 38:04Speaker 1: kicker motor. Eight... Africa, nine kidneys. Phil, scoreboard update.
- 38:09Speaker 7: Well, I spoke too soon about it being anticlimactic because
- 38:12Speaker 7: Randall still has the perfect game going into question 10.
- 38:15Speaker 4: I almost wish I'd blown it on the last one.
- 38:18Speaker 1: The topic is wildlife. This five-letter word is defined as, quote,
- 38:23Speaker 1: the male bee of a honeybee colony whose sole purpose
- 38:28Speaker 1: is to mate with the queen. And he seems to
- 38:31Speaker 1: have it. Had this answer before I finished the question.
- 38:35Speaker 1: You a honeybee boy over there? You gonna start raising
- 38:37Speaker 1: those with your chickens?
- 38:38Speaker 4: No, I hate bees, man. I'll be honest. Okay. They
- 38:41Speaker 4: sting me. I swell up real bad.
- 38:43Speaker 1: That's why you know your enemy so well. You got
- 38:45Speaker 1: this one right.
- 38:46Speaker 4: I hope so.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Did I get it right? I didn't see your answer.
- 38:50Speaker 1: I just saw how quickly you wrote. Gosh, I think
- 38:53Speaker 1: it's right. This five-letter word is defined as the male
- 38:56Speaker 1: bee of a honeybee colony whose sole purpose is to
- 39:00Speaker 1: mate with the queen.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I'm fixing to argue about this one.
- 39:03Speaker 4: Really? Oh, yeah.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Just wait.
- 39:08Speaker 5: Yeah. Let your blood pressure start rising now in anticipation.
- 39:12Speaker 1: For Yanni's game.
- 39:14Speaker 5: No.
- 39:14Speaker 4: Phil. No.
- 39:15Speaker 5: For this argument.
- 39:16Speaker 4: Is this a word that you like? Oh.
- 39:20Speaker 7: I have no idea what you're getting at.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Oh, no, no. Actually, that doesn't make sense. Yeah, never mind.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:26Speaker 6: Great.
- 39:26Speaker 4: I was confusing this term. We'll just pretend this didn't happen.
- 39:28Speaker 4: I was confusing this term with another term.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Is everybody ready?
- 39:30Speaker 5: I don't have an answer.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Let's see if he has the perfect game. Go ahead
- 39:34Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. Randall says drone. Mark, drone. Yanni
- 39:40Speaker 1: without an answer. Reva, steer. Nick without an answer. Brody
- 39:44Speaker 1: says daddy. This episode had UFOs, it had horse semen,
- 39:51Speaker 1: and now it has daddy. Daddy.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Tell me I'm wrong.
- 39:53Speaker 1: The correct answer.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Argue for it.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Is drone. Randall got it. He's got the perfect game.
- 39:59Speaker 1: I think that's back-to-back weeks now.
- 40:01Speaker 4: We've had perfect games. We had Brody.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Last week and Randall this week. The three types of
- 40:06Speaker 1: bees in a beehive are queens, workers, and drones. The
- 40:11Speaker 1: queen bee lays eggs. Drone bees mate with virgin queens.
- 40:15Speaker 1: and worker bees focus on hive maintenance, defense, and food gathering.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Worker bees choose queens when that female is just a
- 40:23Speaker 1: couple days old in larva form. When a queen is selected,
- 40:26Speaker 1: it is fed a special diet of royal jelly that
- 40:29Speaker 1: triggers the development of reproductive organs. The royal jelly. That's
- 40:33Speaker 1: what the bee people call it. You're going to be
- 40:35Speaker 1: a bee man yet.
- 40:36Speaker 4: To explain my thinking there, I had, for whatever reason
- 40:40Speaker 4: in my mind, I had conflated the term droid with drone.
- 40:43Speaker 4: I was thinking of C-3PO and R2-D2.
- 40:46Speaker 7: C-3PO, the most annoying and insufferable killer.
- 40:49Speaker 1: It still would have been weird, though.
- 40:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it would have been weird.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Phil loves the word.
- 40:53Speaker 6: I know.
- 40:53Speaker 1: All right, Randall did it. He got double-digit correct answers.
- 40:57Speaker 1: The perfect game. What are you going to do with
- 40:59Speaker 1: that $ 1, 000 donation?
- 41:00Speaker 4: Let's donate this to the North American Pronghorn Foundation.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Okay, I think that's a first for us.
- 41:06Speaker 4: I think it's a new one.
- 41:07Speaker 1: A new organization as well. It is. So $ 1, 000 will
- 41:10Speaker 1: go a long ways there.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Yeah, they were founded... I think only in the last two.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Years, maybe we interviewed him on media to radio live.
- 41:17Speaker 4: Oh yeah. I've forgotten about that. Uh, and it's pronghorn
- 41:22Speaker 4: season coming up here in Montana. So, you know, get my,
- 41:25Speaker 4: get my juju, get my, uh, what do you call that? Karma. Karma.
- 41:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 41:30Speaker 4: Get my karma going.
- 41:31Speaker 1: There you go.
- 41:32Speaker 4: For Saturday.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Then you can go kill one. Yeah. All right. A
- 41:34Speaker 1: reminder again, our next five episodes, we've got guest hosts.
- 41:37Speaker 1: It's going to be a lot of fun.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Please tune in.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Join us next week for more Meat Eater Trivia, the
- 41:41Speaker 1: only game show where conservation always wins.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Thanks, Spencer.
