- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo, Episode 175. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We just came off some festive episodes — Selamat Hari Raya and Deepavali. Lucas: Right, and today we're going to do a deeper dive into Deepavali greetings. We touched on it in Ep 174, but I want to make sure you really own these phrases. Luna: Good idea. I remember struggling with the pronunciation of menyambut. Can we start there? Lucas: Absolutely. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, you might already know we keep this show ad-free. A handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that literally funds making this many episodes. So thank you to those folks. Luna: Yeah, it's a small community but it really keeps us going. Okay, back to Deepavali. So first phrase: Selamat Deepavali. Lucas: Selamat Deepavali. It means Happy Deepavali. Let's break it down: Selamat you know from Selamat Hari Raya — it's like 'peace' or 'greetings'. Deepavali is the festival. Luna: Selamat Deepavali. Lucas: Perfect. Now a longer greeting: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. This means 'Happy celebrating Deepavali' — like 'happy celebrations'. Luna: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. That's a mouthful. Lucas: You got it! Menyambut means 'to celebrate' or 'to welcome'. So it's a very warm wish. Luna: Okay, and if someone says that to me, I can reply with Terima kasih — thank you. Lucas: Exactly. Terima kasih. You can also say Selamat berhari raya, which is like 'Happy holidays'. Luna: Selamat berhari raya. That sounds like something you'd say after the main greeting. Lucas: Yes, it's a general holiday wish. So imagine you meet a friend during Deepavali. You say: Selamat Deepavali! They reply: Selamat menyambut Deepavali! You say: Terima kasih! Selamat berhari raya! Luna: Let me try the whole exchange. Selamat Deepavali! Lucas: Selamat menyambut Deepavali! Luna: Terima kasih! Selamat berhari raya! Lucas: Flawless. See, you've got it. Now let's practice each one slowly. Repeat after me: Selamat Deepavali. Luna: Selamat Deepavali. Lucas: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. Luna: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. Lucas: Terima kasih. Luna: Terima kasih. Lucas: Selamat berhari raya. Luna: Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: Great. Now let's use them in a little scene. Let's say we're at a Deepavali open house. You walk in and see a friend named Aisha. What do you say? Luna: Selamat Deepavali, Aisha! Lucas: And she says: Selamat menyambut Deepavali! How do you respond? Luna: Terima kasih! Selamat berhari raya! Lucas: Perfect. You've just had a polite festive exchange in Malay. Very natural. Luna: I love how these phrases flow. I feel ready for Deepavali now. Lucas: Yeah, you definitely are. Let's do one more round of repetition to seal it in. I'll say the English, you say the Malay. Happy Deepavali. Luna: Selamat Deepavali. Lucas: Happy celebrating Deepavali. Luna: Selamat menyambut Deepavali. Lucas: Thank you. Luna: Terima kasih. Lucas: Happy holidays. Luna: Selamat berhari raya. Lucas: Excellent. You have those down. So to wrap up, if you're celebrating Deepavali or just greeting friends, you now have the right words. Keep practicing these until they feel automatic. Luna: And if you want to support the show and keep it ad-free, you know where to find us — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Every little bit helps. Lucas: Thanks for listening to Learn Malay with Fexingo. We'll be back with another tiny topic soon. Selamat berhari raya! Luna: Selamat berhari raya!
