- 0:12[SPEAKER_03]: Separate welcome on in it is that time of week here in his suitors on SI podcast Got the full crew back after some moving and shaking with schedules and things like that It should be the good one as spring has sprung in Norman the suitors been out on the practice We've got to take a little peek at some of the early stages of some of those We'll start diving all the way in as it's not even a preview sprinkle ball is
- 0:38[SPEAKER_03]: here we got our man up at the 918 John Hoover John how are you my friend great just trying to figure out this weather man's going to get hot to get the colds are going to get wet you don't stay dry need to know gotta wet and come to plan coming up in a couple of weeks as you can probably hear unfortunately the wind and everything there
- 0:58[SPEAKER_03]: has really done a number on my allergies.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_03]: It's that time of year where I become pretty unlicinable.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_03]: Well, more than usual.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_03]: So apologies to everyone.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_03]: Carson, hopefully this is not taking too much of a wrecking wall to your golf schedule, as our man Carson Field out on the links per use in Norma.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've been good a little sun tanned between a couple rounds and go off a lot of spring practices, so starting to get into that summer look more farmers tan than maybe regular tan, but all things considered glad we've had the sunshine like who said hopefully we get a little more of it soon.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_03]: You've been out in the sun, leaving Stepping Ryan Abrant to press boxes to and throw all across the land.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_03]: As we were hanging out at Lebsfield yesterday for Gene Roach's return game, we'll time into all that after we get some spring ball in our system, but Abraham, how are we?
- 1:47[SPEAKER_01]: Not bad at all.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just glad the wind isn't as crazy today, so I can sit out in the garage in comfort instead of the wind whipping through here like it was the last couple of weeks.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm good with the weather right now, if it would stay like this.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: Although I know who probably wants a more sunshine for the wedding.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: just won't fly or so it's all we need a little bit rain between my wife every day talks about the flowers man.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I hope it rains enough.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, it'll be fine.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be fine.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: It should be married.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be out of our hair.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be fine.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_03]: This hope that whatever we're happening today, we'll record at Wednesday about new niche that hopefully the night at least in the okay sea area.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_03]: It is tame because we have to get our college basketball crown.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_03]: in uninterrupted.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_03]: I guess I don't know.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_03]: Only losers play in that.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_03]: We'll talk about the losers later.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_03]: But let's dive into some cool you football.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_03]: Last we were all together.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_03]: At least you guys were together.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_03]: It was a Thursday.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_03]: We were getting ready to go down to Norman and speak with OU head coach Brent Vittables I believe if we get there if I've got my days correct and we didn't get to link up with Brent Vittables after day two of spring practice he was able to give us kind of a state of the program since we had joined up with them the first week of March and give us a little bit of injury stuff I'm going to breeze through the injuries real quick if you haven't seen them on the website ok listeners on s i dot com to our blight lot
- 3:20[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, as he works his way back, obviously we knew that he was banged up all year a year ago.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_03]: David Stone, Jane Jackson, they've got those guys in bubble wrap as well.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, you've got, oh, who else?
- 3:31[SPEAKER_03]: Charles Harris had a little bit of a cleanup procedure.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_03]: That was kind of the stuff that Brett Vennel was talked about when we saw him on Thursday and is, of course, I've been at two a couple of those practice sessions.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_03]: We can add some other guys into that list.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_03]: UK Dan Daniel, I can crew me.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_03]: He's rolling around on a scooter.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, Bo, Jandro is rolling around on a scooter.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_03]: I know that Carson has had to check me seven times as the twins.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_03]: One of them is practicing Nico Bo's on a scooter.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_03]: On Monday, we saw a boot on Elijah Thomas, Dr. Michael Carter had a big old boot.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_03]: Xavier Robinson's got a big old boot on his right leg.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_03]: Do not expect him to participate most of the way the rest of spring.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_03]: Carson has, as we've been out there, is there anything else on the injury front before we dive into the guys that are practicing?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: No, not that I can think of.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think you covered most of it.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, Brady, Trantham and I saw Xavier Robinson take a little bit of a spill the other day.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: Don't really know what his long term status is.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: Probably nothing that's going to keep him out come fall, but it'll be interesting to track that over the next few weeks just to see what his availability is like.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_02]: But I think you covered it obviously, Bo-Jantro, not participating lately, UK Dan.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of those guys that maybe not the biggest contributors, but guys that we're going to keep an eye on because they couldn't see bigger roles this year.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_03]: Ryan Foge, not a participant, at least an apportion that we could see on Monday as well.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_03]: He walked back to the back with the injured crew.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_03]: If any of the others pop up, we can dive into it.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_03]: But kind of circling back around to Brent Venibule seems like he is excited.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_03]: This is Brent's time of year, right?
- 5:04[SPEAKER_03]: It's everyone across the country, like listen.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_03]: Everyone's happy with the roster.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_03]: Everything's great.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_03]: There's going to be a hundred guys that can contribute.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_03]: It is the start of talking season.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_03]: But you get that.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_03]: There's not the pressure of you get to get out there and practice, but there's no one you're playing on Saturday.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_03]: They have to get a result off of or anything like that.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that you can tell that this developmental phase of the season.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_03]: especially knowing that you don't have a spring portal window at the end of this where, hey, you're pouring all this into those guys and 10 guys could leave if they're not where they want on the roster.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_03]: Carlos, I know that you were there with me talking to Brent.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_03]: You can just tell that this is one of his favorite times a year when it comes to being able to really dive in and try to improve this roster.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you seemed very comfortable when we got to speak to him a couple of days ago.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_02]: I know that Jim Naggi as well said that not having the spring portal window any more is just massive helps you develop some more chemistry because I mean essentially these guys are locked in at this point.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_02]: They really don't have any other options but to play for the sooner or next year which that helps with the process.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_02]: You don't get kids kind of going out there like okay this might be my home but it might not be uh so you've got to like that from a team standpoint and he just
- 6:18[SPEAKER_02]: He rattled off not even at the most recent availability, but all the stats about the returners, what kind of defensive production they're going to bring back, obviously having John material back at quarterback.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think he really likes where the team is at, but last year simply hosting a playoff game that's not the standard.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: We've talked about that.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_02]: They've talked about that and he seems confident that at the very least things are trending in the right direction to where that can become a reality.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_03]: of just kind of sticking with what we've seen at practice here before we get into some of the comments from Brent and our buckle and everyone that we've talked to and all that fun stuff.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_03]: Monday got to see a little bit of like more work in the pads, things like that and just run it through a couple of the things.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_03]: First off, across the board, everyone looks bigger and chiseled and great, we know this, but I do think that Nigel Smith, legitimately that someone that I've looked at him and Trent Wilson a whole lot as far as.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_03]: Usually this time here, you hear the like, and I took a trainer doing really well and Brent talked about it's, I'm not telling you off of two days of practice.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_03]: I'm telling you off of it from when we return for Winner workouts all the way through.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_03]: And generally, you take that with a grain of salt.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_03]: But I feel like this year with Taylor Wein, who that was the guy we all heard about last year from the second Winner workout started.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_03]: The light bulb had come on.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_03]: Obviously, he was a breakout star for their E.D.P.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_03]: So it's like, okay, I'm more willing to like,
- 7:32[SPEAKER_03]: not just write it off his spring stuff and I know that we got to see some of the running periods they were working on on Monday and Nigel Smith was legitimately disruptive and destructive and was blowing stuff up.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_03]: I just think that he's a guy that you wonder, hey, he committed as a DN, moving to the inside stuff like that.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_03]: It looks like he's legitimately carrying the way, and just like if you had gone out there and told us which of these guys is the converted DN, I would take two or three guesses to get to a Nigel Smith.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: And it's funny you mentioned that about Taylor Wein last year.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_02]: We heard that time and time again for months before the season.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_02]: I know I said this like, is this a bluff like you're just trying not to show their hands?
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: Like, do they actually think Taylor Wein's the guy?
- 8:12[SPEAKER_02]: And sure enough he was, let the team and tackles for loss, that's not to say that Nigel Smith will automatically be the next LSC player, but I'm with you.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_02]: He looks very disruptive.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: He looks very technically sound out there, which is needed because of course assuming they get healthy, David Stone, Jaden Jackson, those are the two big names on the interior defensive line.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: But losing the guy like Marcus Strong and maybe being able to replace him with a guy like Nigel Smith, I think that's huge.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's the offseason he looks bigger, he looks faster, yaddiada, they've done a lot of training work, but he really does look like a technically savvy player, which pair that with shrimp Wilson, Bishop Thomas, a bunch of the other guys that could be further down the depth chart, I think it's setting up itself well just in terms of depth.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_03]: And John, this is something that Brent Vinnable has been pretty clear, pretty up front, pretty candid for him.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_03]: The biggest challenge is, how do you take the twos and get them as close to the one as you had a year ago?
- 9:12[SPEAKER_03]: Because they were different, I'm gonna go to the outside the move back in, but you think about Armace and Thomas that he goes down in the Tennessee game.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_03]: If we had told you three years ago that you had to play like Armace and Thomas, who is a first day, second day, or first or second round type,
- 9:27[SPEAKER_03]: past Russia for an Oklahoma deep into you and like oh my gosh I can't believe that they have one of those finally and then if I told you that he's gonna miss most of the game against Tennessee most of key games against Alabama Missouri LSU John we would have talked about Sam Old Sam Old Oklahoma defense gonna crater but instead you saw Taylor wine step in and and just take on even more and be unbelievable and to a certain extent on the interior Jayden Jackson who was hurt in that Alabama game in the regular season just played a couple of series
- 9:55[SPEAKER_03]: same deal if we told you have a guy like jay jackson that goes down to three years ago we would have said there there's no replacing him and instead you almost didn't really notice the production drop-off in that Alabama game in that LSU in that Missouri game so as much as I totally get anyone that's like it's talking season spring out of y'all but my real question is like
- 10:15[SPEAKER_03]: What do they really need from Nigel Smith and Bishop Thomas and Trick?
- 10:19[SPEAKER_03]: Well, do they need 10 steps a game?
- 10:20[SPEAKER_03]: Do they need 15 steps a game?
- 10:22[SPEAKER_03]: Because I don't think it's out of the question that like a Todd Bates and Miguel Shave's combo can get that kind of development.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_03]: Now if you need Nigel Smith to go out there and play for basically be the number two guy for half the game because someone's missing that's where you go.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_03]: He's not really played much football.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know what the expectations are.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_03]: Are you like expecting something that's maybe a little bit too much for a one-off season jump?
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if Jake and Jackson and David Stone stay healthy, those are your frontline guys.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, guys like that are going to be getting most of the snaps.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: But for Nigel Smith, I mean, when he when he committed as a defensive end, we had seen him in high school down in Melissa, Texas.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_00]: and he was just he was a man he was incredible i'm frankly surprised he hasn't played yet i'm surprised based on what we knew about him as a prospect as a recruit that he has not gotten into the lineup yet and that's a testament to you know uh... dominant Williams and guys like that uh... guys that they've uh... went out to transfer portal and gotten guys that they have developed at an early age like the two guys from i mg so the fact that he hasn't played yet
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: speaks highly of those guys, but I still think he's got a big time contributor written all over him moving forward in the next couple of seasons for sure.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: And the fact that he has embraced going from defensive end, you know, a 250 pound defensive end to a 295 pound defensive tackle in just a couple of seasons.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: The fact that he has run to that and leaned into it, that's pretty impressive too because they keep telling him, hey, I
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: This is going to be your long-term position.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to play in the NFL, this is where it's going to be.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: And you look at the roster a couple of seasons later, dudes, 295 pounds in growing.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: So pretty impressive stuff.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now it's up to him to take that next step.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's up to Todd Bass to continue to develop him to take that next step.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_03]: Nigel's been banged up too as well.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_03]: I think worth mentioning last year.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_03]: And he's someone that a much like role we'll talk about like many choice who's kind of been one of the talks of brick venibles and been our buckler.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_03]: That's a guy that Nigel's, somebody who heard whispers about them being like really excited toward the end of last year.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_03]: And what this winter could be, there was another name, a member that I did not expect to maybe enter the chat as far as some of the interior difference of line stuff, a true freshman James, tank, Carrington coming in,
- 12:44[SPEAKER_03]: You can just tell from the second he arrived in the winter.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_03]: It was like, hey, this looks good stuff like that.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_03]: But Brent Venables with just really high praises for is he talked about take care and to be in a guy that much like Jayden Jackson, which when you a vote, Jayden Jackson and everything that he did.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think Brent was saying he is going to be Jayden Jackson and started as a true freshman.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_03]: He's saying much like Jayden Jackson, the stuff that got Jayden on the field is his recognition of how to play double teams, how to stay low, how to when the ball is not right in front of you, what do you do, things like that, that's the kind of stuff that Jayden Jackson had a handle on which allowed him to step in and contribute.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_03]: If he could be anywhere in the rotation even as a small piece, I think that's a big win, but that's part of the you never want anyone to be hurt You would rather David Stone and Jane Jackson be perfectly healthy, but with those guys off to the side and by off to the side for David Stone He is like in the middle coaching everyone as hard as Todd Bates does after every single rep So he is engaged just can be obviously this is a spot where
- 13:44[SPEAKER_03]: Tank characters gonna get a ton of reps all spring long because as soon as you roll the twos in there, or though, or if you shake up your rotations like they've only got four by guys that are really practicing on the interior so a lot of developmental reps for for guys like that when you really really need it because that's what this interior young defensive line needs.
- 14:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: And we've seen, you know, opportunities like that help players sort of springboard to maybe earlier playing time than than what we expected initially.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, that's been something that I think certainly could happen.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, anytime your name's tank,
- 14:26[SPEAKER_01]: I want you to be interesting to talk to and have success because it's fun always to see players with that kind of nickname.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: But talking to him at the newcomers media day.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_01]: You got that sense that Brent Vinnables was talking about, that it was a lot like Jayden Jackson, as far as just the maturity and not just being a mature person and going through the motions the right way, but the understanding of the game, the understanding of what his role is, the understanding of what he needs to do,
- 15:06[SPEAKER_01]: Is it a very high level?
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: And it was something that just really jumped off the page to me.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: Just chatting with him for a few minutes down there at that.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_01]: And if he's able to do that, and we've talked so much about the US question about how much do those guys, the second line guys, need to be able to contribute, not a ton.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: Again, that's what made last year's offense or defense so good is that they were able to roll guys in there who maybe weren't playing, you know, even, you know, 20, 30 snaps a game, but when they were out there, they were able to be effective.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I think certainly he's got a chance to if things fall right, if it gets the opportunity, if he keeps doing the right things,
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: uh... to to get a chance to be one of those guys who can go out there for you know anywhere from five to fifteen five five to twelve snaps a game and be able to give you some productive moments
- 16:02[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see, I would classify, it's a lot of, I don't know, if you'd say Nigel's a new face, but Nigel Smith is a face that hasn't contributed, so it might be new to a lot of people.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_03]: Nigel Smith out there was looking really good.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_03]: Let's just say tank character was getting a lot of attention from Todd Bates and Miguel Shavis and David Stone and a lot of one-on-one coaching after every single rep.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, so I think that one's like a much longer road to go, but again, Absolutely.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_03]: Small portions of three practices at the very start of spring.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, one of those not in pads and stuff like that.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_03]: So maybe he can spark and just really go like his right.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_03]: So go like this as far as his his his growth graph and all that stuff.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_03]: But we will see there just some other stuff Carson that.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_03]: I know, don't I roll.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_03]: Cole Sullivan's just a lot bigger than even he looks when he walked in past us at media day.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_03]: He's got just a little bit different presence.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_03]: He's like just taller and broader than even Danny was.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_03]: And so Cole Sullivan, James Nest of those guys getting a lot of reps with Kip Lewis, who is healthy, but Kip of that is just staying it up to the side and being like.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_03]: Go for it.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_03]: Let's much similar to the David Stone role of a deputized coach on the field and then like on the other side of the ball This is a reaction that I had coming out of min's basketball media day two years ago It's not this team of last year's team.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_03]: I was like oh my gosh It finally looks like they had like a basketball team like if they walked in and Oklahoma gear I'm like well those are athletes.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know where they are Well, that was the old port that was like at least that's the basketball team We see that when the tight-ends walk out there at least I can go Carson Hey, I think that's the tight-end unit which is not what you were able to do in years past
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think the Titans could put together a hell of an intramural basketball team.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_02]: One of the best in the nation.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: They looked the part for sure.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_02]: I know last year we talked about and this is no real slide on the guys that came in and exited the program probably after but
- 17:57[SPEAKER_02]: They didn't necessarily look like the SEC tight-ends you'd expect in a place like Oklahoma.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: Hayden Hansen, Rocky Bears, Jack Van Dorseler, that whole room, I mean, it's massive.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: Those guys looked good in practice with Hayden Hansen and some of the 11 on 11 stuff, taking the first team reps, covered really nice past from John Matier.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_02]: He's someone that not only can catch the passes, but he, I think he's six foot eight if I'm not mistaken.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_02]: Some of with that frame's got to be good in the run blocking, so that's got to be
- 18:26[SPEAKER_02]: whether that's Tori Blaylock, X-Robinson, Jonathan Hatten, a lot of options there.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, you just like them for a variety of reasons.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: I know that a lot of, I know material talked about the versatility of the position group when we got to talk to him a couple days ago, said how they were so good in the run blocking game.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_02]: At the past catching, they're going to be able to do it all, which is really what this team needs after a handful of seasons in a
- 18:56[SPEAKER_03]: At the very least, they need to be able to help Oklahoma block on the perimeter and that's something that has been a focus.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_03]: Much like when you look at the defensive side of the ball, how do you get the two's close to the ones?
- 19:07[SPEAKER_03]: For the offense, it's been run game, run game, run game, from Brett Vittables at least when he's talking to us on Thursday.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_03]: He gave the money, quote, of all the spring that you have to have a kick ass mentality if you want to kick ass.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_03]: That's what Britt Vendibles wants to kick ass run game.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_03]: Ben Arbuckle echoed that want in need on Monday night and John, it feels like for Ben Arbuckle first off, he just seemed so much more comfortable.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_03]: I know that we remember
- 19:34[SPEAKER_03]: Jeff Leby and Dylan Gabriel going from year one to year two and even though Jeff Leby had been at Oklahoma prior as player even though Jeff Leby had been at Baylor when Baylor was winning a bunch of games who knows how that happened but when they were in the in the conversation across college football
- 19:50[SPEAKER_03]: it was still a little bit different you could just see like a little bit more comfortable Jeff Levy so much more comfortable that you bring the old family around it and let them really see what's going on doing Gabriel just seemed like a different like not a different guy but a different guy if that makes sense right as far as he was still doing Gabriel but he was comfortable being doing Gabriel that's kind of what you got from Ben Arboco and he's been pretty open about looking back and going hey
- 20:14[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't sound like it's been an arrogant binar buckle John as far as like everything was perfect as far as I play Colin goes that we just need to be healthy or just need to execute it's like yeah We need to be older and faster and stronger, but we also need to find things that work and I think that Kevin Wilson's gonna play a big role in that Is an asset for binar buckle behind the scenes
- 20:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we'll see, excuse me, we'll see about Kevin Wilson and his continued kind of, you know, hands-on with the offense, but you're a million percent right.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: Jeff Levy was more comfortable in year two.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: Dylan Gabriel was more comfortable in year two.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think we've seen it across the board when you get a coordinator in there, when you get a quarterback in there, especially when they've worked together before.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: They have a history together like Dylan did with Jeff Levy.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: Year two, the quarterback spends a lot of time teaching the players around him, you know, not just the offensive coordinator, but the quarterback has the ability to say, here's what the offense is supposed to do.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: Here's what our, here's what our mandate is for this drive guys.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: Here's, this drill is going to get this out of us, you know, the quarterback is able to communicate those things and, you know, yeah, John Matier should be better year two.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: And there's no question that the, you know, been our buckle should be better year too as well, offensive coordinator and quarterback speak the same language.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: Now, they did when they got here last year, but everybody around them wasn't necessarily speaking the same language.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_00]: So now you would think after, you know, more than a full year in the program that you're at the teaching aspect of spring practice, everybody's picking things up now that they didn't maybe understand last year.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: didn't grasp the the full concept of what the offense was doing or why it was calling why Ben R. Buckle was calling certain plays.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: So now maybe that's what spring practices for or maybe they're taking that next step development wise.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_03]: And one of the other things that's been a theme of the spring so far Ryan has been ready to talk to John Matier Ben R. Buckle or even John Kuzieski did the quarterback's coach
- 22:19[SPEAKER_03]: get the ball from way out here to right by your ear.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_03]: Get, clean the mechanics up.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_03]: That's what Majama Tier talked about.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_03]: And because yes, he talked about, for being our buckle, it was less about mechanics and more about how are you on platform making sure that your footwork is proper.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_03]: But also,
- 22:37[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, this is my responsibility in this play call.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_03]: Don't do more than what your responsibility is.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_03]: Read it properly.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_03]: Read the defensive end.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_03]: Don't just assume a defensive answer.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_03]: It seems like those little things, which when you've got a guy that was brand new to a big time program, brand new to the SEC, only in a second years of starter and then.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_03]: four games into that, breaks his hand, thumb, whatever, all that stuff.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_03]: It seems like it's a spot where they could decompress, slow things back down and really try to, I don't want to say Bill John material back up Brian, so I don't think it's a full rebuild, but this is the fine tuning that you would have hoped you could have done going from your first season to start to a second season to start.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely, but I think also some of it.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: is hard to do in your your first season at a new program and in the SEC not not that you know certainly they wish it would be much farther along and the the injury and things like that uh set them back there but I think
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: You talked about, you know, making the leap to a bigger program, just in general, the SEC is the different animal in particular, and there's a lot of things that you can get away with.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, the conference that he was playing in before, or the non-conference that they were playing in before, whatever you want to say with Washington State.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_01]: You can get away with things at Washington State that you cannot get away with at Oklahoma with the, and I think all of that sort of is compounding, and if you can just, like you talked about it, it's just refining.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's just cleaning things up a little bit.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: You know, fixing the mechanics, trusting your reads, things like that.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: And if, if each one of those can get just a little bit better,
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: the result is going to be much better on the end.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I think obviously a big part of that comes to speaks to the people around him as well and having better tight ends, better and more depth at receiver there.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: The offensive line taking a step forward, but certainly I think if John material is able to do all those things,
- 24:44[SPEAKER_01]: and just get a touch better at each one.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's got a chance to be much, much better this fall than he was certainly post-injury from a year ago, but period from a year ago.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_03]: And, across, I think that plays into another one of the themes of the off season, which this comes maybe from with a front office side that Jim Nagy talked about a lot was putting talent around John Matthier, so that it's not all on him taking things off his plate.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_03]: And that is perfect.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_03]: I think that's what Oklahoma needed.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_03]: on paper, accomplish that.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see how it all comes together.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_03]: But that only works if when you're taking stuff off, John materials play, that means it frees him up to nothing's ever going to be perfect.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_03]: But it frees him up to really have a much higher hit rate on execution for the stuff that remains on his play.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that that's where it becomes a if you can do all this, then you get to play with your shiny new toy of trial Harris and Parker Livingston and and
- 25:39[SPEAKER_03]: all those tight ends and things like that.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_03]: If not, that's where you get into, this is great, but if you pull it and you're throwing the ball when the read should be run all the way, you might be able to help not be as negative in some of those stuff, but you're still gonna have some of the hiccups and issues that we saw at times last year.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there certainly is still a lot to clean up about Jon material's games, whether that is the mechanics, the platform, his reads, but you do like to Abers plant a lot of his stuff, they put around him.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_02]: This should be even if he was playing at the level that he played at toward the end of last season, you would think he would be more productive with the talent that's now around him.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_02]: But that said, if John Matier can play really good football clean up a lot of those areas, his ceiling can't be really high in him.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_02]: We saw that early in the season against good defenses like Michigan and Auburn.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_02]: Was it perfect by any stretch of the imagination?
- 26:32[SPEAKER_02]: Certainly had some throws that he wanted back.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_02]: Um, but largely looks like a quarterback that maybe not highestman winner, but could be right up there.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_02]: One of the best in the nation when playing that well.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, we've said this before, but we know the potentially as when he's playing his best.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_02]: And there are just some of those little things, um, not even massive things that if he cleans that up, pair that with the talent they have, this could be a really not just an okay offense, not just a good offense, but a great offense this year.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see a long way to go here in the spring, obviously.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_03]: But that spring game will be here before you know it, a couple of weekends away.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_03]: As we look into our crystal ball throughout the rest of the spring, are there any position groups that are still kind of sticking out, guys, John, I can start with you, that you sit here and go,
- 27:19[SPEAKER_03]: There's gotta be a lot of development because I just don't see it on paper as far as the debt.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_03]: For me, that is still John, the cheetah position.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_03]: I just, beyond Reggie Powers and then Jeremiah Newcome who's out there in a blue, non-contact jersey, like, you're looking at like a, can a Taylor Heim, not wine, be out there and he was, again, it's just one rep of one practice, but he got spun like a top in the open field, not being able to turn his hips and I'm just like,
- 27:44[SPEAKER_03]: It looks a lot different from everything that a guy like Kindle Daniels was able to do all by himself with Reggie Powers Rotating in a year ago.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, maybe low hanging fruit, but for me, it's the run-and-back position, especially with the potential injury that suffered by Xavier Robinson.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know the extent of that.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_00]: He's out currently, but that would be a setback if he is as a young run-and-back unable to participate in the rest of spring and take that next step.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_00]: And if this thing lingers at any point,
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's a that's a big set back for the position.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you're talking about, you know, Tory Blaylock had a nice freshman year.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, what can he do as a, as a sophomore with more expectations on him, you know, uh, be in kind of that guy, especially if if Xavier Robinson misses some time.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: Um, 510 to 12
- 28:40[SPEAKER_00]: For Dezef and Walker, he's just a freshman, but that is a frame on a running back that could, you know, if he takes care of the ball, if he picks up blitzes, he doesn't get his quarterback killed.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: That's the kind of build that you want on a running back who, you know, especially in a one-back situation like Ben Arbuckle likes to use.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's a really good frame.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, 510-12 is thick, muscle up, explosive,
- 29:07[SPEAKER_00]: So he's got to me could be someone who evolves kind of like Blaylock did last year, kind of comes almost out of nowhere, you know, low expectations, nobody's really saying anything, but, you know, he spends some time in spring practice growing and learning and picking things up, understanding the, the nuances and the demands that a division one running back has in the south eastern conference, right?
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: uh... alveza and you look up halfway through the season and and they're being led maybe by freshman kind of like last year and in other words one sign is the coaching staff is not a verse to to uh... rolling a freshman out there and giving them a bunch of carries he looks like a guy that could uh... be someone that
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: As I able to carry that and then same thing Jonathan hadn't as a true freshman for him again 200 and what do we say 30 pounds six foot one they got some physical powerful You know, we don't know what their ball security is, but hopefully reliable Players at those positions the running back position needs to be better than it was last year
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: Even the last year was better than it was the year before.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_00]: So you got a new Rhino Max coach, Delay McCulloch, coming in for Demarco Murray.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: He's got really high expectations and really high standards for his guys.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: So that's the one that I'm, because of the new position coach, two freshmen and a potential injury to one of the guys that's expected to come back.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking for, that's kind of an x-factor to me.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not really sure what to expect out of the Rhino
- 30:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think running back's fair.
- 30:48[SPEAKER_02]: I definitely think she does fair.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_02]: I think quarterbacks still kind of an area of question for me, just with how material looked at late in the season.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_02]: This is not at all saying there should be a quarterback competition.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_02]: Material definitely earned the right to get the job back this year.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: But I do think there is a lot of psychological impact of struggling like he did in a lot of those games.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_02]: The pick six against BAMO, a lot of those low point moments.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think a big factor to how good the offense is.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_02]: How confident John material is if he's able to shake off in the learn from a lot of those misquies that play him late in the season.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously him being back closer to full strength with his hand.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to be a huge factor too But I think it doesn't get talked about the the emotional toll of
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: playing not very good football.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_02]: It'll be interesting to see if that carries over into this new season.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: How quickly you can build chemistry with his new receivers, some of the new offensive line pieces they got.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: So just a lot of moving parts, and that's not to say I don't think John material is going to be good.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's going to take a step forward.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_02]: But part of me just after seeing how the offense looked in the back half of the season, part of me needs to see it first.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_02]: I need to see what that looks like against UTAP, New Mexico, and then things get really tough at Michigan.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_02]: If you could put together three really good performances to start the year, I think a lot more people myself included will be a lot more sold about potential of this offense.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think, you know, the the points that all of you have made are certainly valid.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: I go back to what Ryan was talking about to start the the cheetah spot and also the safety spot.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_01]: They feel, you know, obviously really good about Peyton Bowen and really like the direction that Michael Bogan asked he is headed.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: But, uh,
- 32:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know, is he able to take a very significant step forward to make that growth into the role as a starter and then, you know, behind that, what are those guys look like is, you know, Mary and Robinson ready to make that big leap and be a guy who can play, you know, significant snaps for them in relief of those other guys.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: And then in front of the
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: they feel really good about some of those guys that haven't contributed, guys that y'all have mentioned that Ryan has mentioned earlier, you know, Taylor Heim and James Nesta, but
- 33:17[SPEAKER_01]: they still, the leap that they have to make is just so great.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: And again, not that they can't make it or won't make it, it's just, there's still a lot to prove there where in the past couple years there hasn't been that need to, you know, have guys make this big of a leap.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_01]: in one off season.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen it plenty of times that it's happened.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: We saw it last year with Taylor Wine and several other players, but there's several spots on that defense that I'm really looking forward to see how they continue to develop here during this spring practices.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_03]: They can get a huge postpring portal pickup in Owen Heinecki, B-N-C-A.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see what that looks like.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_03]: That would go a long way.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that that would give Oklahoma just some options.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not saying that suddenly, like Owen becomes a cheetah or a kid becomes a cheetah or anything like that, especially because Owen did such a good job helping get everybody lined up and things like that, along side of Kip Lewis.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_03]: But suddenly, if you're talking about Owen Heinecki
- 34:27[SPEAKER_03]: in those moments where you needed the line-backer side of Kindle Daniels to come out.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_03]: Those are two guys that have played in the system now a little bit that have the capacity to do some other things.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_03]: And then Cole Sullivan, who you just tell him, see, ball, get ball on, let like a high-to-key and a kip, Lewis beside him, flaking him, take care of some of that stuff.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_03]: I think that that would be a very, very attractive thing.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_03]: And that could be something that just really quickly could shore up as long as everybody's healthy, some of the concerns.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_03]: the linebacker duties, but we know that even if you don't get it on high and keep back, that's where you lean on britmentable's creativity as an offensive mind.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_03]: So we will see there plenty of water calm, we can dive into the wide receiver as we continue to go.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_03]: But the hardest thing about wide receiver, I know of course, and you've got
- 35:13[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a nice store at Manny Choice that has been brought up a couple of times that the big question about wider SEVER is not about like these guys developing in all that stuff.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_03]: It's for two straight years and for different reasons, two years ago, there were only like four healthy guys, but we saw no rotation.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_03]: Then this past year, we again, with a new offensive coordinator who doesn't have a large history of
- 35:38[SPEAKER_03]: Is that on the guys in the room to show them that we can trust someone more than I say Satania Livingston trial Harris?
- 35:47[SPEAKER_03]: And did your Michael Carter?
- 35:48[SPEAKER_03]: Is that a hey?
- 35:50[SPEAKER_03]: This is great.
- 35:51[SPEAKER_03]: You're never going to get those guys because you're never going to rotate.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_03]: I just don't know and that's something that I feel like we have to get halfway through the season almost.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_03]: I feel bad saying like it's going to take me this many more months.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_03]: But until we I see them actually rotate
- 36:07[SPEAKER_03]: They're going to use seven guys at LIDER SEVER.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, just looking back most recently to last season seeing guys that we've, we've seen what they can do when they're playing when they get better reps. Like Zion, Kurnige, Ivani Gibson, definitely some talented playmakers that didn't have major roles on that offense.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_02]: Gibson came on later on the season, but it took a while obviously injury played a role in that.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_02]: But you're right, the rotation really wasn't all that
- 36:36[SPEAKER_02]: Everything we've heard about Elijah, Thomas, Manny, choice, McKinsey, Elaine, a lot of these guys that should be reserves in the receiver room.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's hard to just...
- 36:46[SPEAKER_02]: It's another thing I kind of have to see first.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like is this going to be a really deep in and out kind of receiver core?
- 36:51[SPEAKER_02]: Or is it going to be Satania Harris living stone, some Dr. Michael Carter thrown in there?
- 36:57[SPEAKER_02]: Not that that's a bad thing.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, all four of those guys we've seen can definitely produce at this level.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: But part of me does want to see them run out of mani choice, run out in Elijah Thomas.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_02]: Someone that's younger has more eligibility left.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_02]: Just to see, I mean,
- 37:12[SPEAKER_02]: Better to know now than to never know if this guy can be a big factor in years to come Or if he's someone that maybe he is a better fit somewhere else in future years.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_02]: I think I think I mean I do like the way the schedule sets itself up getting you tap a new Mexico.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_02]: You would think that those games would be able to give a lot of rotations see who works best where
- 37:35[SPEAKER_02]: who can be a big contributor in this offense before playing the likes of Michigan, Georgia, Texas, all the good teams later on the schedule.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_02]: So maybe early in the season, we get to see quite a bit of rotation and then emit Jones kind of settles on his four main guys.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: But that's another thing that like I said, I need to see it first.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you just got, tell me too, you got, it's, you got, then Michigan, then the New Mexico, then Georgia, it's like, it's like you get the one little one, then boom, the big one, one little one, boom, the big one.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_03]: So we will see elsewhere in the, you flip the world on the recruiting front.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_03]: You got a little bit of good news, a little bit of bad news, not the bad news.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_03]: It's like major panic time.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_03]: Let's start with the bad, and then we can work away to the good.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_03]: You saw today this morning.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_03]: uh... twenty twenty eight running backs dot twenty seven twenty eight microroads decommensates a guy that had committed incredibly early in his cycle anyway uh... this is a guy that had committed in part of this one things that when tomorrow takes another job that that mean microroads might not end up a sooner but when he really love to mark a variable or is not there that becomes something to open that thing back up carcinate kind of pairs with
- 38:42[SPEAKER_03]: Similarly, but different Calder band who didn't decommet, but taking it as I think that's just, this is what happens when you have a change of coach and the good news is it's not like tomorrow from where I went to Ohio State.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_03]: So you're suddenly going to see going to fall into Ohio State.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_03]: He's with the chiefs that little bit more complicated to get a mica roads to the chiefs here a little bit.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_03]: But some turnover, none the last or at least just time for dealing with colded, it just feels like given him time to get back in.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_03]: We know he's an excellent
- 39:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's not panic mode, like you said.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Caljard Bin is still committed.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_02]: Even if you did visit Notre Dame, microroads, like you said, it's still almost two years until that class puts pin to paper.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, they could still work their way and maybe end up with him at the end.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_02]: And if they don't, there are plenty of other running back prospects.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_02]: You've got to be confident just looking at this scouting staff, the position coaches, what they have been able to do in the recruiting trail and evaluate good talent.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Keldron Ben, for example, is someone you can look at for this, considering he was an unranked prospect, OU is the only FPS program beside to UTSA, who had offered him at that point.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_02]: And I think two days after he got the offer from OU, he committed fast forward two months, and he is now the 86 prospect in the rivals 300 consensus four star.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: That's one of those things where it looks like, okay, Nagi,
- 40:03[SPEAKER_02]: the team might have been ahead of a curve there.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_02]: So that should at least give sooner fans some sort of hope.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe Mike Rhodes ends up in Norman, maybe he's an Austin College Station, one of the high bidder programs.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_02]: But it's not, it's not disastrous, like you said.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_03]: There'd be a head of the curve in the behind the curve, which is a fun Netflix act when you've got it afternoon, and want to just learn about flat earthers.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_03]: Didn't think we'd hit that today, my bad.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_03]: Twenty-two-seven, that class did grow, AdNop, it's live from Katie Carson, which, uh, that's one of those situations where, uh, I, you didn't live through this, but who of Abraham, I did.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_03]: I grew very tired of watching Oklahoma sign two guys.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't matter how elite of a guy that you have, offensive linemen, get her transfer, some guys just miss.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_03]: I like that Oklahoma is back in the business of signing large offensive line classes.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they have a bunch already like you said, look at guys like Hayden, Penny, Cooper, Hackett, Wilson, I mean, they've got Tyson Ross, they've got a lot of guys already still about six or seven months until signing day, getting a guy like Isaac Cockeron on that's that's big, you look at a guy that plays at the highest level of Texas football in the six day classification, former defensive linemen that already has some stars to his name as an offensive linemen.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_02]: That's a good sign it shows that he's getting used to his new position rather quickly.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_02]: Some of the scouting reports have read about him say that.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_02]: Still some rawness still swishing over you can tell but has the physical tools probably projects as a guard at the college level.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_02]: But really encouraging that it wasn't just a flash in the pan with some of this recruiting momentum that it's still going and I expect to see some more commitments over the next few weeks.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_03]: Should be good to follow there.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think we're gonna be out there doing too much on the practice field or anything like that is Oklahoma gets deeper into a week, two of practice.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_03]: This is just like a nuts and bolts thing.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_03]: Some of the media people that help us out on the OU side are headed to Vegas for the college basketball crown, the pre-eminent.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_03]: college basketball tournament that starts in the month of April.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_03]: We'll show a preview here in a little bit.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't know what that schedule is certainly, but as always, Oklahoma suitors onside.com, we have had all the football content, steam and full speed ahead.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_03]: If you want any of that, Oklahoma suitors onside.com, it is free, you don't have to do anything, but roll up, click on the football tab, scroll, a bunch of great stuff there.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_03]: Before we move into the other realm of OU stuff,
- 42:37[SPEAKER_03]: It's so the day is run together, I forget the last time we talked, I just don't want to miss anything big, you know, boys?
- 42:44[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think so.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_03]: Excellent.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_03]: Excellent.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_03]: All right, let's move into the next biggest story in OU land.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to go to softball first before we work our way back around to the crown.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_03]: Shout out to everyone that's been tapping in with the softball show, Abraham, I do that typically on Monday, sometimes because push back to Tuesday, if they're playing on Monday, but
- 43:02[SPEAKER_03]: Abraham, I did discuss last weekend series against Ella Shewitt, great link.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_03]: If you want that and you're a YouTuber, you're already on John's YouTube page, John Hoover Media.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_03]: That's the YouTube page.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_03]: Just search it, click videos, latest.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_03]: It'll be right there, Abraham, I talking about it.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_03]: If you're listening to this podcast, it should be in your podcast speed for the softball shows, if you want to get into that.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_03]: But Jim Rocha did return after about
- 43:27[SPEAKER_03]: in Baton Rouge, Abraham and I were at Love's field last night as OE rolled over which tossed state.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_03]: And that's a game that so much stuff happened.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_03]: It's almost impossible to recap it all.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_03]: Kind of wells.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_03]: She hits home run 27.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_03]: That means she is your new record holder for the SEC for a single season.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_03]: She has what 17 regular season games left.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_03]: Plus a whole post season run.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, by the way, she's a freshman.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, you had some pitching situations with a couple of former.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, I guess they are not former.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_03]: They're Oklahoma high school products going out there and hammering the two homers, which taught state, one from Carl Albert one from Supopa.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_03]: And then, uh, you have what we got to do, which was Ryan.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_03]: I, I, I would really, really encourage if anyone just is a human.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_03]: And once an incredible human story, head to whom's YouTube page, we sat down and talked with Coach Rocha for about 12, 13 minutes last night, just her battle over these last, not just seven weeks, but months, so she's gone through what she had talked about being a cervical cancer diagnosis, what she's been doing to be able to...
- 44:32[SPEAKER_03]: to stay strong and continue to fight through it.
- 44:34[SPEAKER_03]: It's an incredible moment for her to just be back in the dugout to even be around the team, Ryan, much less traveling to Baton Rouge and taking over pitch calling duties and settling back into her role as associate head coach and pitching coach.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's just been amazing to see and obviously just, like you said, as people, we are, you know, glad to see her back out there.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_01]: I thought to me the best moment last night and I wrote about this in my story on Jen Roach's return from last night was when she visited the mound in the third inning and, you know, it's just sort of a routine mound visit there after a home run in a single
- 45:16[SPEAKER_01]: But her first time really to be in front of the fans in a big way and they Let her know that they appreciated her as she went out and then as she went back and of course Jen Rocha the way that Jen Rocha does was
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I was forward focused on the task at hand, which was settling down Sydney Burzon, and it worked fairly well there, and I think this is a really big lift for this program to get her back.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_01]: Not only the mental, the emotional part of it, but also the nuts and bolts part of it.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Carla Kini did a fantastic job and don't want to take anything away from her, especially these last few weeks in bringing this pitching staff along.
- 46:04[SPEAKER_01]: But Carla Kini's not Jen Rocha.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_01]: Jen Rocha's the best pitching coach in the country for a reason and now that you have her back and working with
- 46:16[SPEAKER_01]: Some pitchers who maybe aren't necessarily really young, but young to the OU programs, Sydney Burzon, Miley Wachino, who is still fairly young.
- 46:25[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, some freshmen there in Alyssa Parker and Berkeley is a K, who have a lot of potential and talent, but there's still a lot of growth there to make.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it's going to be fascinating to see.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: sort of the mechanics of how this pitching staff is handled over these next couple weeks, especially this weekend as they head to Texas next weekend and you know this could turn in from a team that has been so offensive dominant to one where you can trust the pictures a little bit more to carry the load when they need to and we saw that they needed to you know a couple times
- 47:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Carly Kini had got that stuff all the way up to number 22 and Team ERA going into the LSU weekend and it's something that I'd asked Coach Roshia immediately.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_03]: One of those things where you never know where to start because it's such an all encompassing powerful story.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_03]: I just started with Carly Kini is kind of.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_03]: What is she meant to you and something that Coach Rocher immediately said for any pitching coach to come in and take over Oklahoma is a huge deal Much less someone that's two years for room for being a player and has no experience as anything other than an Assistant last year and so I think it's big time that she's gonna be able to stay on Carly Keene and be in the bullpen And maybe bridge some of that stuff that we've talked about the nuts and bolts of hey Coach Rocher You've watched Sydney Brason pitch on film.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_03]: You've watched her in person do it in the fall.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_03]: What does that look like when
- 47:57[SPEAKER_03]: Do you know when to go and talk to her versus when she's like, no, no, I don't want to be messed with right now.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I know how to a lot, but like, it's all those little things that you built throughout the non-conference play that, that Jin Rochibase, we said, like, it's kind of like that for me, it'll be interesting.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_03]: This can talk to you team coming in this weekend, built pretty similar to Auburn.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_03]: I think they're better in the field defensively, but
- 48:17[SPEAKER_03]: Auburn came in basically a 4.0 staff the RA, Kentucky basically a 4.0 staff the RA, Kentucky can hit for power, constrict some stuff together, so if you issued the free passes and things like that, you're going to get hurt quickly, because that was what Chagio successfully did on Sunday against the LSU, which we talked about, which is
- 48:35[SPEAKER_03]: going to give up three home runs if they're also a little shot, so then you never want to give up three home runs, but that's how you can avoid that in power through and when you have an offense and a hit or like kind of wells to add to the embarrassment of riches Oklahoma already has then that always helps and if you want to read more about kind of wells.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_03]: Her journey to Oklahoma and the mentality that has allowed her to immediately pop in and set the SEC single season record.
- 49:01[SPEAKER_03]: Certainly she's gonna get the NCAA freshman record.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_03]: We'll see if she puts Jocci and the actual
- 49:08[SPEAKER_03]: The program record for Joss in the actual NCAA home run record at 37 under threat, but Patty Gassau, that's something interesting to say.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_03]: She talked about last night, Kindle Wells, her travel ball coach is very close with JT Gassau and that he had prepared her and that's as ready a hitter as she has seen.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_03]: I've got good news for you guys.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to Oklahoma Studios on a side dot com.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_03]: I talked to our travel ball coach.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_03]: Brett Samson of the Georgia Impact and all the and it's it's a very much like Oklahoma coach by committee so I talked to coach Samson There are a lot of people at the Georgia Impact who were involved, but if you would like to read more about gender wells I humbly will say we have a pretty decent story upon the website about her journey To in fro and that's linked everywhere just go to my social media.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_03]: It's pinned to the top of my profile stuff like that And I'm gonna exit this now because that's that's talk about stuff that I wrote which I hate doing a rap song
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'll do it for you if you're a fan of Kindle Wells.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you saw Paul College saw Paul in general.
- 50:09[SPEAKER_01]: Go read the story.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's more than decent.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's fantastic and it gives you a great insight into who Kindle Wells is and how she's gotten to this moment and become this kind of player.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's just incredible to see, I mean,
- 50:26[SPEAKER_01]: uh... you know every turn you know patigasso said last night she didn't even realize why people were cheering really loudly uh... after kind of wells and hit the home run she didn't realize it was the SEC record because it was just assumed that she was going to get there
- 50:44[SPEAKER_01]: on it and it's been you know several things like that throughout the course of the season with Kindle Wells with this offense in general and it just continues to click right along even when you know I think we talked about this on the podcast Monday Ryan.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think some of us or some people underestimated LSU because of the couple weekends leading into it, that they're pitching it struggled, but this still really good pitching staff, but Oklahoma's offense was able to, you know, break out on Sunday in the series finale and then yesterday we're able to get out to a hot start and then finish in an absolutely scorching way to finish that game a little bit early.
- 51:30[SPEAKER_03]: If this tells you anything, this is like a big inside softball thing.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_03]: So
- 51:37[SPEAKER_03]: How do you guys get to, you know, the players that you talk to post games, stuff like that?
- 51:41[SPEAKER_03]: Midweek, we kind of just get told, hey, here the players are going to talk.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_03]: That's great.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_03]: It's awesome.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_03]: Oakland does a great job of making everybody available.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_03]: Post game, usually it's like an informal, like, hey, who would be someone that you'd like to talk to?
- 51:51[SPEAKER_03]: And last night we were very focused on, we knew the possibility of link up with Coach Rocha was there.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_03]: So it was almost like a shout out to everyone that did everything.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_03]: But we're more concerned about, you know, talking to Coach Rocha and all that.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_03]: No one even really pushed to talk to Kindle Wells because we know that we'll have her in post game either this weekend or next weekend when she inevitably gets to the freshman record and she's going to have the OE record probably or get to that and it's one of those things of it's just like patty didn't really know and we were kind of like this is records great awesome it's a huge accomplishment obviously for a true freshman we're going to save that post game press conference because we're going to have a couple more of those for Kindle Wells which is just a kind of hit or she is.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, I'll say this add to your to what we're saying about the story that the Chapman wrote, there's a quote from her travel ball coach, it's fantastic quote, he said he noticed over here on the side some kids were over here rough housing and playing whatnot and they were playing against soccer or something and there's this one kid that's like throwing the others around like tossing them around like knocking them over and stuff.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was her, she's over there playing with a bunch of boys, and she's not going to hell out of him.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_00]: That gives you an insight right there in how much fun she has, how competitive she is, and how physically dominant she is.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's just hilarious.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_00]: So check that out, read that story, go to soon as on SI, check out Ryan social media like he said, because if you haven't read it yet, you need to read it, really pulls back the curtain on who she is.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_03]: And I just think that the biggest part, too, is that I went long on the story, so I spoke to Buckle up, gave me several couple minutes, but just talking to her about her mentality and not going to give it all away.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_03]: Everybody means we'd appreciate to go read it.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_03]: But I did ask her, like, hey, how did you do with pressure stuff like that, especially that you're being heavily scouted?
- 53:45[SPEAKER_03]: And her immediate thing was to be like, I mean, I don't think I'm being scouted anymore than Cassie Pick or you know, apart.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_03]: And that's just humility and how humble she is and how
- 53:56[SPEAKER_03]: I appreciate that, but I guarantee you that coaches, if you're not the first swing they're breaking down, you're the second, you're at the top of this category report right now is everyone's trying to get that thing done.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_03]: So we'll see Kentucky this weekend, that's a Thursday Friday, Saturday series, I'm so with Easter, we know this Diamond Sports can be shifted up a little bit, so look alive there before Abraham, I head down to Austin to take in what is always a fantastic time and link up with our good buddy, my wife.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a good buddy of the umpires.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, that's a say.
- 54:29[SPEAKER_03]: Mike White, who somehow, some way, showed some restraint, despite the fact that he covered it in dirt, we buried the lead long enough though, boys.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_03]: Wednesday night, seven o'clock out at the MGM grand garden arena.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_03]: It is the main event, Duke, not playing basketball.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_03]: They've been eliminated.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_03]: Oklahoma, they are playing basketball.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_03]: Tonight, they're alive in the college basketball crown.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_03]: Carson I don't know who for Colorado exists on the roster anymore.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_03]: I actually don't have any interest in really previewing if they went great if they don't great But you didn't get to talk to Porter Moser on Monday before they shipped out and it's the first time we talked to Porter since Roger Denny had pretty publicly come out and talked about lack of resources Porter coming back all that stuff What did you kind of learn from Porter and his vibe is this team heads out to Vegas to at least try and build some continuity and maybe
- 55:22[SPEAKER_03]: At the very least, the very worst, maybe Porter has a better idea of who's in, who's out next year, and there won't be much blindsides, just because they've had to be together these last couple weeks practice.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, oh, you and Auburn the last two SEC teams remaining, just like we all thought, right?
- 55:37[SPEAKER_02]: But in all seriousness, it was good to hear from Porter Moser again.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_02]: We thought that maybe after what I think that was the Missouri game.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_02]: That might have been the last time we talked to Porter Moser.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, they went a couple games, fight to the nail with Arkansas.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_02]: Danny confirms he's going to be back.
- 55:52[SPEAKER_02]: And it was just good to hear his perspective about
- 55:55[SPEAKER_02]: How bad that 9-game losing streak was, how we got through the 9-game losing streak, and how we wasn't, and how we was able to keep the locker rooms together.
- 56:03[SPEAKER_02]: That is, there's a lot we've talked about that you can criticize Porter Moser 4.
- 56:09[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of not so great drama plays late in that stretch, losing to a couple of teams in South Carolina, and Mississippi State that they really shouldn't have.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_02]: You can't really fault him for how he showed up, continue to rally the team even as bad as things were.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_02]: I think that was really impressive and he talked about that Nigel Pat gave some good insight about that because you look at a lot of the other coaches that
- 56:33[SPEAKER_02]: Did get fired at the end of the year, have really rough seasons, whether that's Jerome Tang Bobby Hurley, kind of seemed like they were showing up the same every day, were kind of losing the fight in their team, just the team togetherness, and that really didn't ever happen with the sooners as they're able to win most of their games down the stretch, beating good teams like Vanderbilt, Georgia,
- 56:54[SPEAKER_02]: A&M is a lot of quality teams that they took down that some of them they lost who were earlier in the year and just showed the improvement and who knows if that leads to, oh, this is going to be a really competitive team next year.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_02]: But just hearing that, hearing how confident he is that they can build some sort of momentum, whether they
- 57:12[SPEAKER_02]: when zero games, when a couple games in Las Vegas, just the benefit of what this can mean for his team.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_02]: You look at Nebraska won this tournament last year.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_02]: Nebraska made it to the sweet 16 won their first NCAA tournament games ever this year.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_02]: Not saying there's a direct okay that is the reason they were a lot better this year, but I certainly don't think it hurt them just kind of building that foundation trying to get get a couple more weeks if nothing else just
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: I agree with that.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's big for chemistry as well, you know, projecting forward for 2026-2027.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_00]: The question I have about
- 57:54[SPEAKER_00]: the crown in Colorado, we saw that the Joe Tipton stuff over the past seven days, three buffs, not just three players, but three starters.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_00]: Three of their top four scores have announced that they intend to enter the transfer portal.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_00]: What does that mean for tonight?
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: Are they still on the team?
- 58:16[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to end of the transfer portal when it opens on April 7th.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_00]: They're off the roster right now because you're talking about three of the top four scores including two seven footers.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it's actually for the top five if I'm not mistaken.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_01]: That are not with the team.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_01]: And no, they will not be there not on the travel roster for the crown.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_01]: So it'll be a much different Colorado team than the one I'm sure we all watched so many times during the regular season.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, not just that, but if you're losing four of your top five players, three or top four starters, scores,
- 58:55[SPEAKER_00]: The, these guys are playing for playing for money.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this is like, Rucker Park, you know, the winner gets a, gets part of the purse and advances and gets to play again and gets more money.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they got, they got a win the first game.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_00]: They don't, as soon as don't get anything for just showing up, you got to win that first game, but holy cow, you got to go to the transfer portal before it opens and give up the opportunity to win to take home.
- 59:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you win the whole tournament 20 grand,
- 59:25[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, you must have a pretty good denial deal at your next place.
- 59:28[SPEAKER_00]: If that's the case.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's interesting because you look at this Colorado team.
- 59:33[SPEAKER_02]: I admittedly didn't watch them much this year.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_02]: They weren't very good, but they do have a good coach, tadboil, covered him for a bit when I was in Colorado actually.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_02]: He's done some good things, but this was not there year and now not having a bunch of contributors.
- 59:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be interesting to see what that looks like, but on a use side, they're not going to be at full strength either as Dayton,
- 59:52[SPEAKER_02]: Recently, underwent ankle surgery, he probably a Porter Voser said would have played in the first week into the NCAA tournament if they were selected, they were not three weeks between selection Sunday to the crown.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_02]: Apparently four sides just decided better now to get fully recovered and not make it any worse ahead of next season.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_02]: Jeff Wangko, Jeff, in Wangko, hope I'm saying that correctly, not going to be either a Porter Voser said there's some sort of internal team
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_02]: not really sure what that means, but he will not be there either still.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of the guys pack Wagi, Tay Davis will get their last kind of their last hurai at the college level.
- 1:00:29[SPEAKER_02]: Save your brown you and think he'd be back next year with his dad still being on the staff.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_02]: Daryon Reed, that's a big retainment target.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_02]: No foresight, koala tech, that's what I'm really excited to see.
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_02]: Can his defense do anything a little bit more, because we've seen what he can do offensively.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_02]: What can he look like now?
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_02]: He's probably going to get some decent minutes against Colorado, so I'm excited for that.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_02]: So kind of just a little bit of a preview not adding, obviously, whoever they add from the portal next year, but I think it's going to be something to watch if nothing else.
- 1:01:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's a Wednesday night.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what other college sports are on, so should be something fun to watch, if
- 1:01:07[SPEAKER_00]: I said 20 20 grand.
- 1:01:09[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you currently has 12 guys on the roster.
- 1:01:11[SPEAKER_00]: I assume that means that's that's who's going to get to split the the prize money.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_00]: The purse if they are to win for 12 man roster.
- 1:01:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's 25 grand for instead of the 33 33.
- 1:01:26[SPEAKER_00]: for the first round when the amount would be 4,100 per player per win in those first two.
- 1:01:35[SPEAKER_00]: So the second round doubles, so that'd be eight grand Holy cow.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_00]: Sign me up.
- 1:01:41[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I'll go out there and launch a couple of trees if if I can get my guys to carry me.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_00]: A little injection of a cash to the Hoover family income there.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_01]: It would certainly be nice, but to go back to something you said earlier, who you were right, three out of their normal starters are not on the roster for this tournament, including Isaiah Johnson, who was a freshman, who's chosen to leave instead of participating in the crown and their leading score and looked like the guy that they were going to sort of build the roster around, and that won't happen now.
- 1:02:22[SPEAKER_03]: looking to replicate in the brass credit.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_03]: Here's the good news, too.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_03]: Oakland fans know that the second week in the tournament exists.
- 1:02:27[SPEAKER_03]: So they're not going to be in a canal, just because you won two tournament games that you were favored in.
- 1:02:30[SPEAKER_03]: So that'd be fun.
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_03]: The end is for knowledge.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_03]: All right, we are on to other things here.
- 1:02:36[SPEAKER_03]: Baseball bounces back.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_03]: It was a tough weekend down in Austin, Carson, a disaster in game one.
- 1:02:41[SPEAKER_03]: And then you're in a winning position in game two and game three.
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_03]: don't get that thing done.
- 1:02:46[SPEAKER_03]: You're in winning position late and it's kind of a weird first stop going to the number two and number one team to kind of where you look looking swept that there's no shame in that but it's how it happened how you were uncompetitive on Friday and then the fact that your bullpen which had been so good not able to take you home on either Saturday or Sunday I skip not really a moral victory guy just a you know day by day type thing but
- 1:03:10[SPEAKER_03]: I think that uh, I don't know if they'll do well too long, but that must have just been a tough, uh, bus ride back to the airport.
- 1:03:16[SPEAKER_03]: It's it and they're going, you could have had it and just didn't able to close that in game 2 in game 3, but bounce back in store you.
- 1:03:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it is, it's gotta be a tough pill to swallow, looking at your biggest rival, really good team, two games that were there for the taking and just letting them slip away.
- 1:03:31[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about that they were out scored in the series overall between the three games against both Texas A&M and LSU and still won those series, showed a lot of the fight, the ability to win close games, which is so important in this sport.
- 1:03:44[SPEAKER_02]: Not having that against Texas has got a sting.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of that does fall on the bullpen.
- 1:03:49[SPEAKER_02]: A lot falls on the lack of timely hits.
- 1:03:51[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen what this lineup can do when they're swinging a hot bat, whether that's Brendan Brock, Jackson Willitz, Candid Johnson, some good hitters in this lineup.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_02]: And you saw that early in both of the last two games of the series, seemed like the bats in both of those games, though, just kind of fizzled out, and they couldn't put together these clutch hits to get over the hump.
- 1:04:11[SPEAKER_02]: Get, like I said last week on the pod winning one game in Austin, I would have considered that a win just with how tough of a place the dish is to play out with how good Texas is Texas might be the best pitching team in the country so I mean it's not like
- 1:04:26[SPEAKER_02]: They just got swept by some bum program.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_02]: That is a really good baseball team on the road.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's less about getting swept and more how they got swept, how uncompetitive they were in game one, how they did kind of collapse both of those last two games.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_02]: That is, it's a backbreaker and things.
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, maybe BAM is not as good as Texas, but that's a dang good baseball team, swept Auburn Florida the last two weekends.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_02]: They're kind of
- 1:04:51[SPEAKER_02]: hitting their stride at the right time or wrong time from an Oklahoma perspective.
- 1:04:55[SPEAKER_02]: And there's no taking away that they won two series against two good teams, but it does only get only get harder.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about LSU and A&M being more middle of the road at SEC teams this year.
- 1:05:09[SPEAKER_02]: Bama seems to be like one of the better ones.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_02]: They play Auburn, I believe next week.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_02]: They get them a zoo by in a couple weeks, so that should be three, that should be three wins.
- 1:05:19[SPEAKER_02]: But it's a tough baseball conference, always is, and that's not changed this year.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_02]: So just finding ways to win games, you can be outscored in the series and still win the series.
- 1:05:30[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't have to be sexy, you don't have to win by 10 runs, but string together some big wins against good teams.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to be huge.
- 1:05:38[SPEAKER_03]: Coming to this thing, you get a 17 log jam at the start.
- 1:05:41[SPEAKER_03]: Or at the top of the SEC standing is now, Oklahoma at four and five, but the good news about a log jam type situation.
- 1:05:47[SPEAKER_03]: You have a good weekend, everybody's ahead of you.
- 1:05:49[SPEAKER_03]: Flip it back around in two weeks.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_03]: So that would be huge, like you said, Crimson Tide coming in, two-camera family stadium on Thursday to start.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_03]: Look a lot of folks, weather all over the place this weekend.
- 1:06:00[SPEAKER_03]: If there's any schedule, shifting, or changing, you'll be the first to know, Oklahoma Sooner's on si.com.
- 1:06:07[SPEAKER_03]: We'll have that.
- 1:06:07[SPEAKER_03]: If you go there, you can hit the Women's Basketball tab, Sooner's Ball to Sapkara line up.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_03]: All four one-seeds make it to Phoenix.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_03]: I have a big off-season preview of kind of like the big question slash things on the Ross or Oklahoma have to do.
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_03]: Not only when it comes to just retention, but assuming you can retain everybody, what those additions.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_03]: need to be there as well as you need brown check enters year six trying to get over that hump she's made to the sweet 16 three hosts out of five years two sweet 16 trips now it's about taking that next step and I have to imagine that she like many coaches on campus will be very very happy with Oklahoma finally getting full shares of SEC revenue now going forward which will help fund everything that should be huge.
- 1:06:49[SPEAKER_03]: as well elsewhere just two things real quick shout out to women's tennis they took down the room in Georgia on Sunday made for a good Sunday for Oklahoma and then Aver you were down in Norman talking to KJ Kinler and her squad as they prepare for a big stretch ahead as they are fully imposes them.
- 1:07:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, tough SEC meet for them as far as, you know, finish in second, but certainly, you know, no shame and finish in second in the SEC meet, the biggest thing for them was internally the vault did not go the way they would have liked, but it wasn't disastrous.
- 1:07:26[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't, you know, have falls and have really low scores, just didn't have the top level scores and didn't have the,
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_01]: uh... stuck landings that were been so used to saying for mogul hauma but
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_01]: This scenario is really similar to last year when they finished second in the SEC championships that when they didn't perform well at all at SEC's But they were able to rebound and make it not only out of regionals for gosh, what's it been I think They've won like 17 consecutive regionals But when an actual championship last year so they're hoping to do that and we'll start on the vault
- 1:08:09[SPEAKER_01]: and hope to get off to a better start as I go Olympic rotation this weekend in Lexington Kentucky with what looks like sort of a half SEC meet at that regional with Arkansas Missouri there as well.
- 1:08:23[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome to support staffers.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_03]: It'd be very familiar with Lexington between head out there for a women's shiv regional softball be there, mid-May for SEC tournament, all that fun stuff.
- 1:08:34[SPEAKER_03]: So should be good there.
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_03]: Who, what you got for us before we depart and go about our Wednesdays?
- 1:08:44[SPEAKER_03]: We are in the thick of spring crossover season, which means we got a lot to hit.
- 1:08:49[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it made me kind of mad that I didn't know that the three Colorado players who are at the top of the top of the roster there are not playing.
- 1:08:57[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, why didn't you know that that's something you should know.
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I went into the Colorado basketball notes and started looking in.
- 1:09:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it confirms in the Colorado basketball pregame notes that those three guys are going to be out says right there.
- 1:09:09[SPEAKER_00]: They're not going to play.
- 1:09:10[SPEAKER_00]: I scroll down a little bit and I found out that tonight is going to be the fourth time in the history of the program.
- 1:09:17[SPEAKER_00]: that Colorado is playing in the month of April.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_00]: The, they are the following.
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_00]: This year, last year when they played in the crown, and then 123 years ago, at the end of the 1903 season, Colorado played in the month of April.
- 1:09:34[SPEAKER_00]: Holy hell, that's bad basketball.
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_00]: You guys, that's 125 years, a bad basketball.
- 1:09:39[SPEAKER_00]: I know, you gotta get to the final four, but not once, not even close.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think I saw the statistic, it's been a long, long time since Colorado has even made it to the sweet 16, and, you know, it's just not a great basketball program, obviously.
- 1:09:59[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, we'll see if they're able to turn it around.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_01]: But it looks awfully difficult given the landscape of what they're facing now with everything that they've lost.
- 1:10:13[SPEAKER_00]: college basketball event.
- 1:10:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I think Colorado would agree.
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_01]: Which starts in April.
- 1:10:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that starts in April.
- 1:10:22[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 1:10:23[SPEAKER_03]: Or any of them, you know, it's back.
- 1:10:25[SPEAKER_03]: We'll be moving and a shaken as we get through it.
- 1:10:30[SPEAKER_03]: Be sure you're following Carson for your complete crown coverage.
- 1:10:34[SPEAKER_03]: And everything is that goes.
- 1:10:36[SPEAKER_03]: And then obviously we'll be scattered all across norm in this weekend.
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing if I like when baseball and softball are both in town at the same time or not, because it pulls Carson in 10 different directions.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_03]: But look alive out there.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_03]: If you see someone get smoked in third base photo well over at softball, I might have to step back down into a little bit while Carson's on some baseball stuff, which
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_03]: Actually, I almost died at practice by the way, so I'm glad that I'm here head on a swivel.
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_03]: Only us could be trying to get photos of Nigel Smith and have a place spill out right at your feet and have to like bounce over to the right.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_03]: So just be happy or sad, I guess that I'm here, internal, doesn't really matter either way.
- 1:11:18[SPEAKER_03]: That's all the time we've got today.
- 1:11:20[SPEAKER_03]: We've got plenty more work that we've got to break and get done.
- 1:11:23[SPEAKER_03]: OpenCinorsONSI.com is the place to be as always.
- 1:11:27[SPEAKER_03]: 360's web days here have been certainly throughout the spring cross over season.
- 1:11:31[SPEAKER_03]: A-bra, thank you so much for doing.
- 1:11:34[SPEAKER_03]: You're going to have to see my days.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_03]: Friday.
- 1:11:39[SPEAKER_03]: What did disaster for you?
- 1:11:40[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sorry there.
- 1:11:41[SPEAKER_03]: I got the car's nest head to deal with that big chain of cars as well for everything as well as the man run a point up the night when they come.
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_03]: Who were I right, Kevin?
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_03]: We'll be back here next Monday, Abraham.
- 1:11:51[SPEAKER_03]: I will for the top post show next Wednesday, because he was on a side climb unless something moves that around as we roll through the spring.
- 1:11:58[SPEAKER_03]: But until next week, talk to you guys soon and be sure to
