- 0:07The New York Yankees face the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn for Game 5 of the 1949 World Series on October 9th.
- 0:15The Yankees lead the best of seven series three games to one, and this is the mutual radio broadcast of Game 5 featuring announcers Mel Allen and Red Barber.
- 0:25Field shot, D shot. Use Gillette's blue blades with the sharpest edges ever home.
- 0:31Gillette's Cavalcade of sports is on the air. From Ebbets Field, here in Brooklyn, Gillette presents the World Series.
- 0:38Afternoon baseball fans everywhere. This is the old redhead Red Barber with Mel Allen greeting you for the Gillette's faith to raise the company as the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers warm up for the fifth game in the state championship classic.
- 0:51Gillette, maker of world famous, Gillette raises blades and shaving cream as leading event for various fields of sports the year round.
- 1:00Gillette also broadcasts and telecasts the major boxing match of the week every Friday night.
- 1:07This is a perfectly beautiful day from the standpoint of the weather. It couldn't be nicer. The temperature is right at 80 degrees, a completely clear blue sunny sky.
- 1:17The field is in apple pie shape, and the question now is what goes in this fifth game as the Dodgers or the Army?
- 1:25In other words, Brooklyn is two down with three games to go. The Yankees, you know, lead three games to one and the best four out of seven.
- 1:33So this one has to be more seriously considered than any other that has come about.
- 1:40And for those of you who haven't looked in the Little Red Book of baseball records or who are not quickly conversant,
- 1:47only twice in the entire history of the World Series, going back to 1903 when World Series as properly constituted began,
- 1:54has a team behind three games to one come on to win. In 1903, the Boston Red Sox did it in the first World Series.
- 2:02The last team to do it was the Pittsburgh Pirates against the Washington Nationals in 1925.
- 2:07So there you have that. Now about the pitches. It is, as expected, Mick Rashie, the big towering 21-game winner,
- 2:15who is coming back for a second shot. Rashie, who has been charged with the sole Yankee defeat.
- 2:21So Rashie is going to get another opportunity this afternoon.
- 2:25Mick Rashie, Andrew's case is tingled, smilingly says, Rashie is starting and Joe Page is ready in the ball pit.
- 2:34For the Dodgers, it is the unpredictable right-hander, Rex Barney, who can be as good as any pitcher and can be as wild as any.
- 2:42You think of the little girl in Longfellow's poem when you think about Barney.
- 2:46And to forecast how he'll pitch, well, you don't know. He can be very, very good.
- 2:51Or, in other words, good enough as a no-hitter witnesses for itself two years ago.
- 2:57And Barney, of course, in the 1947 series threw a very hard ball. It was quite wild.
- 3:03And some of the big moments came in some of his strikeouts, especially one of DiMaggio with the bases loaded.
- 3:08In fact, he did that twice.
- 3:10So it is Barney going for a return. This is his first appearance in this World Series.
- 3:15He was in the bullpen two days, but he never threw in the bullpen at all.
- 3:18So as far as Rex is concerned, he is completely arrested.
- 3:21I managed to shot him before deftly coming down to Barney, had a little talk with Preacher Hall,
- 3:29and wanted to know if by any chance the thin left-hander who pitched the 1-0 win in Game 2
- 3:35thought that he should attempt this one today.
- 3:38And Roe said no, he didn't think he had enough rest.
- 3:42Roe, during a regular season, never pitches with less than five days rest, sometimes seven.
- 3:47He's quite slender, physique, and quite frail.
- 3:50But said Mr. Roe, and he doesn't bat an eyelash, I'll pitch tomorrow.
- 3:56The lineups will be no surprise to you. I don't think the teams have shaken down.
- 4:01So here they are.
- 4:02Paul Yankees, as they go into Game 5, it is Rizzuto again leading off and playing a magnificent game at shortstop.
- 4:09Tommy Henrik, living up to every letter in the phrase that has been lovingly bestowed upon him in recent years, all reliable.
- 4:17Tommy Henrik at first base.
- 4:19Yogi Berra is catching. He says his hand is even sore than it has been,
- 4:23but he wouldn't get out of there unless six wild horses yanked him away from the plate.
- 4:27And I don't see any horses in the ballpark today. There's no room for anybody but ticket holders.
- 4:33Joe DiMaggio, and he of course is one of the most heartwarming stories in the series.
- 4:39One of baseball's all-time great players who has been plagued this year.
- 4:43First, that sore heel, and then virus pneumonia that bedded him.
- 4:49Yet he was able to come off of his crutches at one time and spark-plugged the Yankees to a win against the Red Sox when they needed it,
- 4:57then came out of a hospital and spark-plugged the Yankees in their last two games which got them into the series.
- 5:02And DiMaggio so far has had one scratch single. He has struck out five times.
- 5:08He has fallen down twice in center field.
- 5:11DiMaggio in center.
- 5:14Perhaps the human interest towards has been most overlooked.
- 5:17This great ballplayer who is not having a great series.
- 5:21Now we have Tommy Brown who was the batter yesterday with a double and a triple,
- 5:26knocked in three runs, the winning runs.
- 5:28Brown at third. Woodling is in left field for New York.
- 5:31Mates is in right field. His double sliced in the left field corner.
- 5:35Got in the first couple of Yankee runs and got to the start then yesterday as they won six to four.
- 5:39Coleman who's played a fine game at second base.
- 5:42And Vic Brashe coming back for his second start.
- 5:47Now for the Dodgers. The batting order again goes with captain and shortstop Pee Wee Reese leading off.
- 5:55With the right hander going for New York, man in the shot goes to his left hand hitters
- 5:59which means third baseman Johnny Jorgensen is hitting number two.
- 6:02Jorgensen at third batting second.
- 6:04Snatter in center field.
- 6:07Batting third.
- 6:09Robinson at second base hitting fourth.
- 6:14Batting fifth and in right field is Gene Hermanski.
- 6:16Carl Pirello is still out with that injured right ball and he just can't go.
- 6:21Hodges at first base is hitting sixth.
- 6:24Marvin Radcliffe who came out of the second game of the World Series at the stadium if you'll recall
- 6:29with a poor muscle in his back is a surprise nomination.
- 6:33Manager Sharpton at noon an hour and 50 minutes ago here in New York thought that Olmer would be a starting left fielder.
- 6:40But Radcliffe apparently told him that he was all right and manager Sharpton has changed and is going with Radcliffe in left field.
- 6:47Roy Campanella is catching and Campanella yesterday I think impressed every baseball man in this ballpark with the fineness of his receivership.
- 6:58His throwing, the fact that he was in there digging pitches out of the dirt, that he was taking them out of the air.
- 7:03Just about all that you could ask a catcher to do he did.
- 7:06Campanella catching and Rex Barney is the pitcher.
- 7:09And for the umpires we will have the working rotation that we had in game one of the series when it opened at the stadium.
- 7:15That means that Big Cal Hubbard will be back on home plate of the American League staff.
- 7:20Beans Riddon of the National League staff will be at first.
- 7:24Riddon is making this series his swan song.
- 7:28He's been in the major leagues 24 years.
- 7:30His health has not been too good.
- 7:32He was out several times during the prenatal campaign with illness.
- 7:35He is quite light, about 15 pounds off weight.
- 7:39And he figures that he's going back to his adopted state of California and follow the day as far as umpiring goes as soon as this series is over.
- 7:46He's had a great career.
- 7:48And everyone in baseball is deeply indebted to a man who has given so much of himself with such honor and such judicial demean.
- 7:59Art Passarella, hustling young umpire of the American League will be at second.
- 8:04Lou Jordan, a veteran, will be at third base from the National League staff.
- 8:09In the left field corner will be George Varr in the right of the National League.
- 8:13And in the right field corner will be Ed Hurley of the American League.
- 8:17But I should repeat again that the weather is ideal.
- 8:20You could not have a finer day for a baseball game.
- 8:23It is just hot enough and yet it is not too hot.
- 8:27And we'll have to keep a close eye on the official time piece, our Longines watch,
- 8:35to be sure that this ball game does not get underway before the New York State Sunday Law,
- 8:40which says that no athletic event, baseball or otherwise, can begin before two o'clock.
- 8:46In fact, with the 1916 Brooklyn Dodger team here as guests of President Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Ball Club,
- 8:53there's been a great deal of talk in which these players used to remark that back in 1916,
- 8:58there were no Sunday games that they played while the team was at home.
- 9:04The late mayor of New York when he was in the House of Representatives at Auburn in New York,
- 9:11Jimmy Walker was the father of the Sunday's fourth law.
- 9:15He got the law through and the law stipulated that no sporting event could begin on Sunday afternoon
- 9:22in the state of New York before two o'clock.
- 9:24Therefore, all Sunday games are advertised at 2 o'clock.
- 9:28And now as the umpires walk up to home plate, Manager Stengel comes out with the Yankee batting order,
- 9:32Captain Reese comes up with the Brooklyn batting order.
- 9:35Here is an important message to every one of you veterans listening in to the World Series broadcast today.
- 9:41To you veterans, if you have held National Service life insurance for three months or more
- 9:47on a policy taken out before the end of 1947, that's on a policy taken out before the end of 1947,
- 9:55you are eligible for a special dividend.
- 9:57The amounts will vary, but many veterans will receive as much as $300.
- 10:01Obtain your application from any post office, fill it out, and mail it promptly to the Veterans Administration.
- 10:08Now don't fill out more than one application and don't write to the Veterans Administration about your application.
- 10:14Checks will start going out after the first of next year.
- 10:21Now in that final lull before the storm, while things are still quiet,
- 10:29which they rarely are at Ebbets Field, we'll pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 10:34This is a mutual broadcasting system.
- 10:38Hear the World Series exclusively over WOR.
- 10:41See it on WOR TV, Channel 9, WOR and WOR FM, New York.
- 10:55The meeting at home plate, six gentlemen in their blue sedges,
- 10:59and two in what is called in the trade mucky suits.
- 11:03He's handing over his batting cards, Casey Stengel handing over his.
- 11:08Each team representative comes up to home plate with three batting cards, and they must be identical.
- 11:14One set of cards, that's one from each team, is kept by the plate umpire.
- 11:21Then each team representative keeps his own batting card and one of the other fellows.
- 11:27So they have to be made out in triplicate.
- 11:29Rex Barney, who will start for Brooklyn and will take them on sooner than will Rashie of the Invading Yankees.
- 11:34Barney has finished his warming up and has gone into the dugout, sitting down for a last minute blow.
- 11:40And Rashie is just polishing off. He's just throwing sort of loosely back and forth,
- 11:46just getting the feel in the draw and just right.
- 11:49There's a final refinement going on at home plate over ground rules.
- 11:52Big Gal Hubbard, who is back at the plate today, will act as the umpire in chief,
- 11:56is straightening out something to make certain that Reese and Stengel understand.
- 12:00Of course, anything about this ball, Barker Stengel doesn't understand.
- 12:03He never will. He was entered as a player.
- 12:05In fact, he played on the first Brooklyn team that ever performed in this ball.
- 12:11It was an exhibition game against the Yankees just before the season opened in 1913.
- 12:19Reese and Hubbard are going over some point of ground rules,
- 12:24and Peewee is pointing out to what center field is, what it is.
- 12:26I don't know. It's not very serious because George Bargren walks away.
- 12:30Reese is just needling somebody. And Stengel grins.
- 12:33And by the way, Casey Stengel was very pleased to be honored by the folks from Oakland, California.
- 12:39Casey, you know, managed Oakland to a championship last year in the Pacific Coast League.
- 12:44And before the ball game began, city commissioner Frank J. Ural of Oakland presented a proclamation
- 12:52from the city commission,
- 12:54commending Stengel for the fine job that he's done in managing the Yankees to the American League credit this year.
- 13:02So the Dodgers are calm. The Yankees are proudly and serenely confident.
- 13:08The Umphires are now scattered to their sixth defensive post.
- 13:12One lone groundkeeper is finishing off a smooth place where Rashe was last warming up.
- 13:17Now no one is on the field but the Umphires, and now the Dodgers take the field and the battle will be joined.
- 13:36So Brooklyn goes to the field. Manager Shatton told his boss, I've reminded him,
- 13:40that they did everything the hard way all season long, that in the important series after important series,
- 13:44especially with the Cardinals, the Dodgers would inevitably lose the opening game of the series
- 13:48and then have to come back to take the next two to keep going.
- 13:52And Casey Stengel, of course, doesn't have to say anything. He just starts Rashe and the ball game plays.
- 13:58Now in a moment, we'll have the national anthem. It's a minute up to two o'clock.
- 14:04The announcement is made that Ms. Gladys Gooding will play and sing the Star Spangled Banner.
- 14:09The Star Spangled Banner plays.
- 14:14The Star Spangled Banner plays.
- 14:42And the world is here above her feet,
- 14:50In groups all the time,
- 14:55To the place one feels at home.
- 15:01Who's made a better nation than we have made?
- 15:10In the land of the free,
- 15:17And the home of the brave.
- 15:25Applause.
- 15:30Well, all the preliminary words have been written and have been spoken.
- 15:36It is now a time for the actual playing performances on the playing field
- 15:42and the play-by-play words of Mel Allen as we send you Game 5.
- 15:49And Gillette is very pleased to have this in its cavalcade of sports.
- 15:53Mel, let me say again while you can hear it, it's great to work with a Major League broadcaster.
- 15:59And here you are.
- 16:01Hello there everybody. That goes double with me, Rand.
- 16:06This program comes to you by authority of the Commissioner of Baseball.
- 16:09It's intended only for the private use of our audience.
- 16:12Any publication or reproduction of this program and commercial use of the program is prohibited.
- 16:18Roy Campanella's throw down to Jackie Robinson at second base.
- 16:22The ball whips back around the infield and comes to rest in the glove of Rex Barney,
- 16:28who performed in the 1947 World Series with the Dodgers in three games.
- 16:32He won eight in the third innings.
- 16:34I checked that he went six in two-thirds innings.
- 16:37Lost one game to not win any as Specshe beat him 2-1 in the fifth game with a 1947 set-up.
- 16:43And so the young right-hander, 23 years of age, for the Dodgers starts the wind-up pitching to Phil Rizzuto,
- 16:49and the first pitch is outside for ball one.
- 16:53Rex Barney from Omaha, Nebraska. I called him 23. I should have said 24.
- 17:00He'll be 25 on December the 19th.
- 17:03In comes the delivery. Rizzuto takes outside again for ball two.
- 17:07Two balls, no strikes.
- 17:10The scooter has a batting average in the series of 200.
- 17:14He's had three hits and 15 times at bat, all singles.
- 17:18Johnny Jorgensen's in close at third in the event of the bunt.
- 17:21Pee-wee Reese over toward the third base hole.
- 17:24Barney delivers outside again for ball three.
- 17:27And now Johnny Jorgensen moves over from third base out to the mound to talk to Barney.
- 17:33And Carl Erskine sticks his head out of the Dodger dugout, starts to go down to the bullpen,
- 17:39and is immediately called back for a moment.
- 17:41Now he's taking the walk down to the Brooklyn bullpen. He's trotting down now.
- 17:46You've got Jorgensen third, Reese short. Robinson second. Hodges first.
- 17:50Correctly left, Snyder center, Hermanski right, Campanella catching.
- 17:53Rex Barney pitching three balls, no strikes to Rizzuto, and it's outside and low.
- 17:57Ball four and the scooter is on.
- 18:02Jackie Robinson trots over from second base now to talk to Barney.
- 18:07Tommy Henrich steps in.
- 18:10He's had four hits and 15 times at bat in the series for a 267 average.
- 18:15There have not been too many robust hitters in the series.
- 18:18It being predominantly a pitcher's classic this year.
- 18:22Although yesterday the boys sort of broke loose a little.
- 18:26Outfield around toward right for Henrich, stands deep in the batter's box in close to the plate.
- 18:29The pitch inside for a ball is a curve.
- 18:32Cal Hubbard almost went up with a hand. He was watching that one very closely.
- 18:36The ball broke, almost hit the inside edge, but did not quite get it.
- 18:41You've got Jorgensen about 10 feet off third baseline in on the edge of the infield grass
- 18:44with three strikes to the left, the second in halfway.
- 18:47Now the pitch and Henrich takes outside for ball two.
- 18:50And Rex Barney is starting out in very wild fashion.
- 18:55Time is called as Roy Campanella goes to the mound and Captain Peewee Riz comes in from short.
- 19:01And there's action about to begin on the Dodger bullpen.
- 19:04A little conference around the mound, trying to settle Barney down.
- 19:14Riz goes back to short. Campanella comes back to the plate.
- 19:18Milton Stock pokes his head out of the Dodger dugout to see that action is going on in the bullpen.
- 19:25Rex Barney all set to pitch two and nothing to Tommy Henrich.
- 19:28Here it is and it's in there for a call strike, a throw down to first, Rosito back.
- 19:33That's the first strike that Barney's gotten in in seven pitches.
- 19:36Jack Batta, a right-hander throwing the bullpen.
- 19:41Two and one to count on Henrich. Jorgensen is backed up from the edge of the infield grass, not looking for the bunt.
- 19:47Barney ready, throws. Henrich takes low, ball three, three and one.
- 19:52The outfield around toward right, Jackie Robinson is halfway between first and second and about
- 19:57three steps in from the edge of the outfield grass with Gil Hodges holding against Rizuto.
- 20:02Henrich has a look at Frank Crocetti coaching at third for any sign.
- 20:05Bill Dickey coaching at first.
- 20:07He's going to be off and running with this pitch in the event Casey tries to put on the hit and run.
- 20:11There goes Phil. The pitch is low inside, ball four. Henrich walks.
- 20:15Rizuto holds up, eases into second.
- 20:18And now coming up is Yogi Berra.
- 20:21Berra has had one out of 11 in the series in the three games in which he's participated.
- 20:26And thus you have almost a reproduction of the first inning of yesterday
- 20:30where the first two Yankees getting on base.
- 20:33And then coming on yesterday, they were on first and third,
- 20:37Rizuto moving to third on Henrich's single.
- 20:40And then came the play on which Berra hit into the unusual double play,
- 20:44The retired Rizuto who was on third and Henrich who had rounded second.
- 20:57Yogi squares away, Jorgensen in on the edge of the infield grass,
- 21:00he's off third, Rizuto moves off second, Henrich off first.
- 21:03Here's the pitch, Yogi takes inside, ball one, he bluffed a bunt.
- 21:07Jack Banto, angular right-hander throwing the bullpen for Brooklyn.
- 21:12Outfield for Berra, round toward right.
- 21:15Gil Hodges has moved into the edge of the infield grass,
- 21:18looking for the bunt though he hasn't charged.
- 21:20Neither has Jorgensen who will try to anchor at third if he can to let Barney handle the bunt.
- 21:24If Yogi is bunting, runners lead away. Here's the pitch, Yogi shortens up, takes a strike.
- 21:28And Campanella started to throw down to second as Reese broke for the bag but he didn't throw.
- 21:35He cocked his arm but he didn't let the ball loose.
- 21:38One ball, one strike.
- 21:41So the situation is boiling here in the first inning.
- 21:45This is a key man as Rex Barney is trying to settle down.
- 21:48It's worked to count to one and one.
- 21:50Rizuto has his short lead off second, Henrich off first.
- 21:52Now Hodges is in behind Henrich. He's not looking for the bunt.
- 21:56Here's the pitch, Berra swings at a curve and misses.
- 21:59Strike two, he went for a bad pitch that was low inside.
- 22:03One and two, the count on Yogi.
- 22:09Rex Barney who walked first two men, Rizuto and Henrich, is now ahead of the next man, Berra.
- 22:14The count of one and two.
- 22:16And of course Hodges is halfway back at first now, definitely not looking for any bunt.
- 22:19Two strikes on the batter.
- 22:22Riz halfway, it's short three strikes to the left of the bag. The stretch, the pitch, swung on.
- 22:27Grounded foul down behind the bag at first and behind Bill Dickey and into the Dodger bullpen.
- 22:33Ball retrieved along the right field line by the alternate umpire Ed Hurley of the American League,
- 22:40George Barrow of the National League, stationed down the left field line.
- 22:44You've got Radcliffe in left, Snyder in center, Hermanski in right.
- 22:47That's the Dodger outfield today. They're playing bear to pull.
- 22:50Barney gets his sign from Campanella.
- 22:55Now he takes his stretch. Rizuto has his lead off second, Henrich off first.
- 22:58Here's the pitch and Berra takes low into the dirt and the ball is nicely blocked by Campanella.
- 23:03Keeping being a wild pitch and the count is two-two.
- 23:09Barney has a world of stuff but he, like the Yankees Tommy Byrne, will have a difficulty controlling it.
- 23:15And when they can have their control down pretty well, they're tough to handle.
- 23:19Not easy to hit, in other words.
- 23:21Two balls, two strikes. Top of the first inning, Rizuto on second, Henrich on first.
- 23:26Reese trying to slip in behind Rizuto and Ivax away.
- 23:29Here's your pitch and it's inside for ball three. Full count on Yogi, three and two.
- 23:33That pitch was very close to the inside corner.
- 23:36Possibly could have had it but probably was below the knees or at least it just missed it.
- 23:41Full count now on Berra. Three balls, two strikes, nobody out.
- 23:45Rizuto on second, Henrich on first and young Rex Barney getting ready for an important pitch.
- 23:53They're all important in the World Series but particularly is it important at this moment?
- 23:59There's Reese as it's going down to second trying to pick off playing the balls off Reese's glove
- 24:03and he stumbles over the umpire passarella and going to third is Rizuto on the second, Henrich
- 24:08and the ball is relayed into the plate by center fielder Duke Snyder on a peculiar play.
- 24:14As they attempted to pick off Barney whirled through to Reese, Rizuto was getting back to the bag.
- 24:20The ball was high, Reese went up for the ball and as he twisted around, Art Passarella, the umpire,
- 24:26is there to call the play and Reese tumbled over him and cannot get up off the ground
- 24:31and there was the shortstop of the Dodgers and Art Passarella both on the ground and Snyder
- 24:36racing in to back up and keep Rizuto from scoring.
- 24:40So it is an error charged to Barney on the throw enabling Rizuto to go to third and Henrich to second.
- 24:48So you have runners on second and third, three and two on Barney and now Barney will take the full
- 24:54line up. Around comes the right arm, the pitch and Barney swings and grounds it foul off to the right of the plate.
- 24:59The ball skips up into the box just to the right of the Commissioner's box.
- 25:06The ball is moving here for a World Series fan. Full count then on Barney.
- 25:13Barney trying to help himself out of the jam on that pick off play but it didn't work and it resulted in an error
- 25:18charged to him putting two men in scoring position, nobody down and the three-two pitch on its way
- 25:23and Barney swings and misses, strike three.
- 25:32Barney strikes out Barra and now here comes Joe DiMaggio.
- 25:37Joe has had one out of fourteen in the series.
- 25:41As Red told you, the story of Joe DiMaggio is one that hasn't been told too much in this series.
- 25:48He hasn't had a very good series for a great star.
- 25:53But then one of the reasons perhaps that not too much has been said about Joe's failure to hit is the fact that he got out of his
- 25:58sickbed to finish the last two games of the year and is still not well.
- 26:02And here he is, Rex Barney facing the clipper and the pitch.
- 26:06High, ball one and the infield on the right side is in the left side deep as the Dodgers play it in a split-up defensive situation.
- 26:14That is to say Jorgensen is halfway back at third, three-four feet off the line,
- 26:18Reese deep at short over toward the gap but there is Jackie Robinson on the edge of the infield grass
- 26:22and Hodges just a step or two away from the edge of the infield grass.
- 26:26DiMaggio swings and sends a long drive to deep center field.
- 26:29There Snyder racing way back toward the wall.
- 26:31He leaps up and grabs it, tagging up and scoring after the catch at Rizzuto
- 26:35and racing to third after the catch is Henrik as Duke Snyder leaps up against the deep center field wall
- 26:40to three hundred and ninety-three foot sign to haul in the drive.
- 26:44The man Joe gets a hand as he comes into the Yankee dugout and Casey Stengel pops his head out and claps his hands
- 26:59and says, nice going Joe.
- 27:01And Duke Snyder made his sensational catches.
- 27:04He went all the way back to the deep center field wall and leaped and caught the ball above his head.
- 27:08And now here's Bobby Brown with two down, one run in, one to nothing, New York.
- 27:11Henrik on third, the pitch to Bobby in there for a called stripe.
- 27:15That's about as good a ball as DiMaggio has hit on the series.
- 27:19And had he been able to pull it just a little bit, it would have been up into the seats.
- 27:24It is almost into dead center field.
- 27:27Bobby Brown left hand hitter, chokes that bat.
- 27:31Barney throws, Bobby swings and hits one right back through the middle.
- 27:34Out of a second in the center for a base hit, Henrik comes in to score.
- 27:37Up for the ball is Snyder, off the grass, throws on into Robinson and the Yankees lead two to nothing.
- 27:42As Bobby Brown continues his spectacular World Series heading.
- 27:46Three for three in 1947.
- 27:49And he has had in this series three for eight.
- 27:55Now four for nine with that base hit.
- 27:57So a total of seven out of twelve in World Series competition for Bobby Brown.
- 28:04And that's Bobby's fourth RBI in the series and he leads everybody in that respect.
- 28:09Now here's Gene Woodling, left hand hitter.
- 28:11The delivery inside, the knees, ball one.
- 28:16Two to nothing for every Yankees.
- 28:19And to refer to a situation that we always do, the manager's headache.
- 28:24Those bases on balls, that started the Yankees off in this inning.
- 28:28Barney stretches, checks his runner, the pitch right in there for a called strike, a throw down to first, not in time.
- 28:33Brown sliding back in.
- 28:36Hodges not bothering to tag Bobby because he throws a little late.
- 28:40Gene Woodling the batter, Cliff Mapes on deck, two runs in, top of the first inning.
- 28:45Barney again ready, has a look, here's the pitch.
- 28:48The curve and it's just outside for a ball, two and one.
- 28:56Banda still continuing to limber up in the bullpen, not throwing too hard now.
- 29:00He's almost ready in the event he's needed.
- 29:04Barney seems to be settling down a bit.
- 29:06There's a quick throw to first back in time is Bobby Brown, quick move over.
- 29:11When I said Barney seems to be settling down, I mean in so far as his wildness is concerned.
- 29:16The right hander throws, the pitch is swung on foul-tip, skips off mid of Campanella into the chest protector in behind it of Cal Hubbard.
- 29:23You know in the American League, the umpires wear the chest protector outside their jacket, the National League inside.
- 29:32Cal Hubbard working his second turn behind the plate in this series.
- 29:35He opened it up at the stadium.
- 29:38Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two in, two to nothing New York, top of the first inning.
- 29:42Outfield around toward right for Woodling, stands in close to the plate.
- 29:46Barney throws, pitches inside.
- 29:49Ball three, three and two.
- 29:52Roy Campanella who has caught a beautiful series, taking his time for returning that ball to Barney.
- 30:00The Yankees have all remarked about what a swell backstop Campanella is.
- 30:07How swell he can throw and how he keeps all the baserunners on their toes.
- 30:12And sometimes on their stomachs.
- 30:14The pitch is inside as Brown was running on the three-two pitch with two outs.
- 30:17It's ball four, Woodling walks.
- 30:22Third pass given up in this inning by Barney.
- 30:24And now coming to bat is Cliff Maepes.
- 30:27Maepes has had one out of seven in this series.
- 30:34Left hand hitter.
- 30:40Brown on second, Woodling on first.
- 30:43Two runs in.
- 30:45Two men out.
- 30:47In field is shaded around toward first.
- 30:49Rex Barney delivers.
- 30:50Maepes takes curve over for a call strike.
- 30:53Came in with a fastball motion and delivered a slow curve with it.
- 30:58Jorgensen, the third baseman, is halfway back.
- 31:00Six, eight feet off the line.
- 31:02Reese over towards second.
- 31:04He's about three strikes to the left of the bag.
- 31:06Brown moves off second.
- 31:07Woodling off first.
- 31:08Here's your pitch.
- 31:09Swung on and foul tipped for strike two.
- 31:11Ball skips out of the mid of Campanella.
- 31:15Mara Brackley is over toward left center.
- 31:18Duke Seidler into right center.
- 31:19And Gene Hermanski is shading right center more than he would be the right field line,
- 31:26not looking for Maepes to pull too sharply.
- 31:31Runners move away from first and second bases of the pitch.
- 31:33And it's inside to Maepes.
- 31:35Right around the letters for ball one, one and two.
- 31:42Ball players are not prone to take too much of a toehold against a pitcher who is inclined to be a bit wild as is Barney
- 31:48or as is Tommy Byrne of the Yankees when he's working.
- 31:51The one-two pitch.
- 31:53It's just outside for ball two.
- 31:55A curve.
- 31:56Mighty close.
- 31:59Barney figured he might have had the strike on that one.
- 32:03Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two in, two on.
- 32:10Brecht walks around the mound.
- 32:12The eye comes back on.
- 32:14Campanella gives him the sign and sets up the target.
- 32:17Brown moves off second, woodling off first.
- 32:19Hodges very deep at first.
- 32:21The stretch of the pitch.
- 32:23Swung on.
- 32:24It's a high foul going out of play to the left of the plate and out of the ballpark.
- 32:31The wind seems to be blowing from right out toward left.
- 32:38So that at the present time, any ball hit up into the air in the direction of left field would be aided by the wind.
- 32:46Held up, hit out into right field to some extent.
- 32:50Once again, Barney set checks his two runners, leading off first and second.
- 32:53The pitch, curve, and it's inside for ball three.
- 32:56Three and two.
- 32:58Two pitches that Barney has delivered, two of the pitches that Barney has delivered to MAPES have been very close.
- 33:09Full count.
- 33:12Three balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 33:14Reese came in a few steps, honored something to Barney.
- 33:17Brown on second, woodling on first.
- 33:19They'll be off and running with this pitch.
- 33:20They're being two down and three and two on the hitter.
- 33:23Stretch by Barney.
- 33:24There go the runners.
- 33:25The pitch is strike three, called a curve that broke over.
- 33:31For the Yankees then, two runs, one hit.
- 33:35No errors for the Dodgers.
- 33:36Two Yankees left on.
- 33:38One error for the Dodgers as we double-checked.
- 33:40That was on Barney's attempted pickoff at second when he threw the ball over Reese's head.
- 33:44Two runs, one hit, one error, and two men left on.
- 33:47And the score at the end of the first half of the first inning, Yankees two, Dodgers nothing.

- 34:42Retail stocks are getting low.
- 34:44Ask for the World Series Special, the modern Gillette Super Speed razor set, at your nearest store soon.
- 34:50Quick!
- 34:57Last half of the first inning, Vic Rasci goes to the mound for the Yankees, making his second start of the series and working with two days' rest.
- 35:05Defeated in the second game of the World Series, one to nothing by the Dodgers and Preacher Roe.
- 35:11As Rasci gave up seven hits and one run and lost the ball game one to nothing.
- 35:20The right-hander pitching to Peewee Reese, right-hand batter, throws and it's right in there for a called strike.
- 35:32The official scorer has informed us that both runs for the Yankees were earned in the first inning.
- 35:37Here's the pitch, swung on, hit sharply short, one hop, Razuto grabs it, throws over to Henrik in time, and it's one away.
- 35:43Reese swung at a curve ball, hit it solidly, but right at Razuto on one hop, and Bill retired him.
- 35:49Johnny Jorgensen steps in now.
- 35:52Reese had had four hits in 14 times at bat in the series for a 286 average.
- 35:57Johnny Jorgensen, in three games, has had two out of eight.
- 36:03Left-hand hitter, Rasci delivers, fast ball in there for a called strike.
- 36:07Bobby Brown's in close at third.
- 36:09Razuto is over towards second base, about two strides to the left of the bag as we look out onto the field.
- 36:15Jerry Coleman halfway between first and second, back on the edge of the outfield grass, and Henrik near the line.
- 36:20Nick Rasci getting his sign now, taking a little time.
- 36:27Now he goes to work, into the windup, Brown comes to the right arm, the pitch is swung on, a grounder hits the third.
- 36:31Bobby Brown is left up with it, fires across to Henrik, end time, and they're two away.
- 36:37Two up and two down, and now here's Duke Snyder.
- 36:41The Duke, one of the hitting disappointments in the series for the Dodgers, has had to one hit him 16 times at bat.
- 36:49But still a fellow that Bert Schotten's got all the confidence in the world in, and rightfully so, because when he connects, he can send him.
- 36:58Nick Rasci's first pitch to the Duke, left-hand hitter in there for a call strike, slow curve, broke over just below the shoulders.
- 37:05Robinson, a rather Snyder, is the kind of guy who can break up a ballgame for you at any given moment.
- 37:12Robinson is on deck. Here's your pitch. Outside, ball one, one and one.
- 37:17They play the Duke around toward right. Brown's in fairly close at third, giving the bag about a 10-foot berth.
- 37:25Here we go by the stride to the left of second.
- 37:29The one-one pitch on its way, the left-hand batter cuts and misses at a curve that broke off into the dirt and skipped in behind Barrow.
- 37:36One and two, the count. Duke a little overanxious.
- 37:44Jackie Robinson's on deck.
- 37:49Larry Coleman, the second baseman, kicking at the dirt. He's back on the edge of the outfield grass and at a point halfway between first and second bases, with Hendrick deep three feet off the first base line.
- 37:58Milton Stock coaching at third. Jake Fittler at first for the Dodgers.
- 38:01Now the one-two pitch on its way from Rasci to Snyder, swung on and missed, strike three, and he's out of there.
- 38:08No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on.
- 38:12And Snyder goes down striking out for the sixth time in the series.
- 38:18DiMaggio had struck out five times, as had Snyder before the start of today's game.
- 38:26So the two center feelers were both running parallel courses.
- 38:32And now the Dodgers' symphony band are serenading one of the owners of the Dodgers, Walter O'Malley, evidently his birthday, as they are playing Happy Birthday.
- 38:44And as they conclude, we pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 38:50This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 38:54Hear the World Series exclusively over WOR, see it on WOR-TV, Channel 9, WOR and WOR-FM, New York.
- 39:08Going into the top of the second inning, Jerry Coleman, Vic Rasci, and then Phil Rizzuto will be coming up for the Yankees.
- 39:15It's two to nothing New York, end of the first inning of play.
- 39:20Spider Jorgensen comes in to say something to Rex Barney.
- 39:25Crowd sitting back rather quiet at the moment.
- 39:29A lot of folks out here today who were unable to get here during the weekdays.
- 39:34A lot of working people can't get out to the ballgames except on Sunday.
- 39:39Notice Lou Woodrow, skipper of the Indians, who won last year out here.
- 39:43There's a pitch right in there for a call strike as Barney cut loose with a fastball right over.
- 39:48Jerry Coleman, right-hand hitter, has had three out of 15 in the series and has been playing a fine defensive game.
- 39:55Chokes that bat three inches or so in fairly close to the plate.
- 39:59Open stance, knees bent, leans from the waist a bit.
- 40:02Barney throws, fastball swung on, hit high up into the air in the short left.
- 40:06Reese goes out, waves Radcliffe off, he we hundred, and he makes the catch about 15 feet off the left field line, about 25 feet behind third base.
- 40:15So Coleman pops out the reason short left.
- 40:18And now coming up is Vic Rasci.
- 40:28Vic Batcham, right-handed, outfield straightaway, infield shaded round toward third just a bit.
- 40:34And in a normal setup, here's the pitch.
- 40:37Just outside, ball one, fastball.
- 40:39Yanks two, Dodgers nothing, second inning.
- 40:43Bill Rizzuto's in the batter circle.
- 40:48Rex Barney, the right-hander, throws, fastball, and it's outside for ball two, Rasci.
- 41:01Two-nothing count.
- 41:09Barney aims this one over, it's in there for a called strike, fastball.
- 41:17Two balls, one strike.
- 41:25Now the delivery to Vic is inside and a little high just around the shoulders, three-and-one the count.
- 41:41Barney gets his sign from Campanella, getting ready to work.
- 41:44Rasci stands way away from the plate, the three-one pitch, right over for called strike two.
- 41:50Barney has got a good fastball, really alive.
- 41:53I recall two years ago in the World Series when Billy Southworth came up here talking to Red and to me and he said,
- 42:00there's a fellow I'd like to have on my ball club, he's got a lot of stuff.
- 42:03Here's your pitch, strike, no, it's ball four.
- 42:08Hubbard started to go up with a hand and he indicated as the crowd yelled that he was merely pointing down to first base.
- 42:13The only way that we have of determining whether an umpire calls a strike or not is when he goes up with the right hand.
- 42:19And Hubbard did go up with the right hand but he indicated again after that, that's the reason we called it the third strike,
- 42:26as the crowd yelled, he said, with his gesture, he raised his hand up and pointed at first base, he merely meant for him to go on down.
- 42:33So it was ball four.
- 42:36That's the fourth walk given up by Barney.
- 42:44Time is called here for a moment, a little conference at the mound, Reese, Robinson, Barney and Campanella,
- 42:50while at the crash he adjusted his windbreaker.
- 42:58Now Rizzuto, who walked in the first inning and scored the first Yankee run, awaits the pitch, he's right hand hitter.
- 43:05It's on its way and it's outside, ball one.
- 43:15And now Campanella turns and says something to Hubbard.
- 43:22Barely uh, disgusting the situation a bit. Barney figures some of those pitches that were close should have been called strikes on some of these batters.
- 43:33Gil Hodges walked over a few faces in first, now we're ready to continue.
- 43:38One out, one on, top of the second inning, two nothing New York. Barney throws, Rizzuto takes a strike call, fastball in there.
- 43:51One ball, one strike, one out.
- 43:56Phil down on the end of the band a bit, here's your pitch. It's bunned down toward first, Hodges comes in, picks the ball up and tags Phil out on the line as Reishi goes to second.
- 44:06Now Phil will be credited with a sacrifice, though that was not actually his intention. He was bunning to get on with one out.
- 44:13He was hoping to bun it to the right of the mound to make Robinson come in and field it.
- 44:17Hodges get off the bag so that he could beat it out, but he bunned it right toward Gil and the Dodger first baseman picked it up and retired Rizzuto unassisted.
- 44:25However, since it moved, Reishi down to second, it must be scored as a sacrifice, though that was not the intent.
- 44:31Now here's Tommy Henry, at least that was not the sole intent.
- 44:35Frank Crissetti coaching the out third, hollering down to Reishi, he's watching Reiss and Robinson for Vick as Vick watches Barney.
- 44:40Barney has the stretch, here's the pitch and Henry swings and sends a ground ball to backhanded nicely by Hodges, flips to Barney covering for the out and a beautiful play.
- 44:55Gil Hodges backhanded that ball, which was hit into the hole between first and second, took a possible base hit away from Henry, flipped to Barney covering for the out, no runs for New York, no hits, no Dodger errors, one left on for the Yankees.
- 45:07Fans, Earl Torgeson, first baseman for the Boston Braves is here watching the game with us.
- 45:13Earl, come in and say a few words to the folks.
- 45:15About Gillette Blue Blades, can you name a better kind?
- 45:18You have me there, Mel, as far as I'm concerned, Gillette Blue Blades are absolutely top.
- 45:23Easy shaving?
- 45:24Not only that, but consistently good. You never find one that's great for both.
- 45:28Fans, buy Gillette Blue Blades and you'll go along with Earl Torgeson, I'm sure.
- 45:33Earl, have you enjoyed the series thus far?
- 45:39Not very well, I'm too much of a Dodger fan now. That National League, I'm rooting for that National League.
- 45:45Well, I can appreciate that. Rex Barney, you've batted against him a lot of times, haven't you?
- 45:50Yeah, he has a world of natural ability, he could be a great pitcher.
- 45:54Well, getting that control down, of course, is his biggest problem and he seems to be settling down just a little bit.
- 46:01Yeah, I hope he does.
- 46:03Earl, how's your hand?
- 46:04It's going along all right, Mel, it's a little stronger now, it's feeling better.
- 46:08You expect by the time spring training rolls around to be ready again to go with the Boston Braves?
- 46:14I hope so, Mel.
- 46:15Well, much obliged to you, Earl.
- 46:16Thank you very much.
- 46:17Earl Torgeson dropping in to visit with us for a little while.
- 46:20And now we're ready for the last half of the second inning.
- 46:23Jackie Robinson leads off for the Dodgers. Robinson's had two out of 12 in the series.
- 46:29It'll be followed by Hermanski and Hodges, the thick crash, the right hand into the windup throws.
- 46:33Robinson takes outside for a ball as he bluffed a bunt.
- 46:36Brought Brown charging in from third.
- 46:39Henrik is deep at first and Jackie looks as if he's going to try to shove one out towards second.
- 46:44Jerry Coleman's only two strides to the right of second. Henrik near first, a lot of room in there.
- 46:48Here's your pitch, swung on line right to Coleman as he leaps and grabs it.
- 47:02Jackie Robinson's blazing liner was hit just above Coleman's head, but it sank.
- 47:08It was a sinking liner and sank off to his left and Coleman spirited glove handed for a brilliant play.
- 47:16Robbing Jackie Robinson of a base hit.
- 47:19Now here's Gene Hermanski, left hand hitter.
- 47:22Raschi throws, Gene takes a strike over the outside corner as a fastball.
- 47:26Bobby Brown's in close at third near the line.
- 47:28Rizzuto over towards second base.
- 47:30Coleman halfway between first and second and deep.
- 47:32Henrik deep near the line.
- 47:33The outfield shaded around toward right.
- 47:35Two to nothing New York last half of the second inning.
- 47:38Mick Raschi goes to work, in comes the pitch.
- 47:40Gene Hermanski takes high for a ball and the count is evened up now at one and one.
- 47:45Jake Pitler as usual walking up and down, coaching that first.
- 47:51Gil Hodges on deck, going through his usual batting, preceding his batting motions, adjusting his cap.
- 47:58Here's the pitch and it's inside to Hermanski for ball two, two and one.
- 48:02Berra turns and asks Hubbard where the ball was.
- 48:05It was close.
- 48:07Two balls, one strike.
- 48:11Jerry Coleman just went over and took Jackie Robinson's club, which is nearby,
- 48:15and tossed a little further back out on the grass in right field so it wouldn't be in his way.
- 48:20Now your two-one pitch, swung on, popped foul off to the left of the plate and out of play.
- 48:25Ball going into the upper deck and you've got a two-two count on Gene.
- 48:35Raschi fumbling around with a rosin bag.
- 48:38Here's a new ball to work with, working with two days rest, he's taking his time.
- 48:45In talking with fellows like Rogers Hornsby, for example, and other old time baseball greats,
- 48:51they say that pitching with two days rest is not so rough really.
- 48:54The two-two pitch, curve is swung on, drilled out of the right center field,
- 48:58there's Mapes racing over and he takes it for the out.
- 49:02Hermanski didn't get a good cut at that ball.
- 49:04If he'd have hit it solidly, they'd have gone a lot further.
- 49:07Hornsby said that most of it's in a pitcher's mind.
- 49:16And he referred back to the old days when pitchers used to work very frequently with very little rest.
- 49:26Gil Hodges, right-hand hitter, awaits the delivery from Raschi.
- 49:30It's fastball over for a called strike.
- 49:36Two to nothing, favor of New York, last the second inning, two down, nobody on.
- 49:40Hodges the batter, Marv Brackley on deck.
- 49:43Outfield toward left.
- 49:45Raschi throws, fastball misses the outside corner this time.
- 49:48The count is evened up at one and one.
- 49:57Big Gil, born from Petersburg, Indiana, who made the change from a catcher to a first baseman
- 50:03and has developed amazingly rapidly and shows promise of becoming a very outstanding first baseman
- 50:09if he already hasn't done so.
- 50:12One ball, one strike, the count on him.
- 50:16Raschi into the windup, in comes the pitch, swung on, hits sharply out to short.
- 50:19Zudowitz is right up with the ball, fires the long way to Henrik and it's in time for the out.
- 50:25The Scooters show a flash of his brilliance that has put him into contention
- 50:30for the most valuable player award in the American League this year as he raced to his right,
- 50:34took that ball deep over toward third and threw Hodges out.
- 50:38No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on and the score at the end of two innings,
- 50:44two to nothing, in favor of the Yankees.
- 50:48With the Yankees owning the only hit in the ball game thus far.
- 50:54Now as we move to the third, the Yanks will come up with Barra, DiMaggio and Brown.
- 50:59It was good to see Ty Cobb out here and chat with him before the ball game.
- 51:03And he is among the most excited of all the fans here at this World Series.
- 51:08And in a measure you wouldn't think that there was a fellow who went through World Series
- 51:13and a lot of the roughest and toughest ball games imaginable, a great competitor,
- 51:17and played baseball for so many years, over 20, that you would figure that he'd take all this in stride.
- 51:24But he's one of the most excited fans out here.
- 51:29The Dodgers-Symphony band entertaining the crowd today.
- 51:40Top of the third inning, two to nothing.
- 51:42For you late tuners in, the Yankees got two runs in the first inning when Rex Barney started off
- 51:46in wild fashion, walking Rizzuto and Henrik.
- 51:48An attempted pickoff play at second, he threw the ball away.
- 51:51Rizzuto went to third and Henrik to second, and after Barra struck out,
- 51:54DiMaggio drove Snyder to the center field wall to take his drive.
- 51:58Rizzuto scored after the catch and Brown singled Henrik home.
- 52:01Now here's Barra. Barney throws. Pitch and swing on hit, back to the box on a hop.
- 52:05Rex takes it, throws over to Hodges and Barra is out.
- 52:08Yogi went after that first pitch and bounces out to Gil Hodges.
- 52:13And up comes Joe DiMaggio, on whom Duke Snyder made a spectacular play in the first inning.
- 52:20Duke went all the way back to the center field wall,
- 52:22393 foot mark, leap timed the air and took the ball up over his head.
- 52:27So the Clippers steps in and Rex Barney starts to work on him.
- 52:31Right-hander fires, pitches inside at the belt for a ball.
- 52:35The outfield is around toward left. Gene Hermansky almost half-facing the right field line.
- 52:40He's way off of it. Third inning, one out, nobody on, two to nothing New York.
- 52:43The delivery, swung on, lined out to center. Here Snyder coming in fast and he makes a good
- 52:48man catch to the ball, sensationally, how about that?
- 53:08Duke Snyder for the second consecutive time robs DiMaggio of a base hit as he came racing in from deep center.
- 53:15And at top speed, reached down in about a foot or so off the ground,
- 53:19blocked DiMaggio's sinking blazing liner to rob him of a base hit for the second straight time Joe's been at bat.
- 53:25Brilliant play by the Duke. Now here's Bobby Brown, who takes a fast ball low, little inside, ball one.
- 53:32The crowd roared its approval of the sparkling defensive maneuver of Duke Snyder.
- 53:40Duke probably figures, well, I'm center field and I haven't been hitting, I haven't let DiMaggio have any either.
- 53:44Here's a pitch and it's way outside for ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 53:55DiMaggio himself remarked, he said, I've got only one hit in the series and that was what we term a blader, little roller he beat out.
- 54:01And he says, you hit a lot of them real hard and real deep and they're caught.
- 54:05Here's your pitch, inside to Bobby, almost hit him ball three.
- 54:09So he concluded, said, this is a funny game after all, isn't it?
- 54:12You can get them a mile and they'll catch them.
- 54:15Then you can hit one five feet and beat them out.
- 54:19Brown single to center in the first inning to drive in the second Yankee run. It's two nothing New York third inning, two outs.
- 54:24Rex Barney comes in with his pitch and it's inside for ball four and Brown walks.
- 54:30That's the fifth base on balls given up by Barney.
- 54:35And coming to bat is Gene Woodling.
- 54:38Woodling drew a base on balls in the first inning.
- 54:44Barney walked 10 men on the 47 World Series and the six and two thirds innings he pitched.
- 54:51But he had an earned run average of under three.
- 54:54The right hander throws right over for a cross strike to Woodling.
- 54:57Fast ball, got plenty of the inside portion of the plate, about high.
- 55:02He's shade Woodling around toward right infield shaded around toward first Hodges holding against Brown two down.
- 55:08In the event the Dodgers pull this one out of the fire and stay alive in the series, the scene will shift to Yankee Stadium for tomorrow.
- 55:16And in that event, we'll be back on the air at our usual time of 1245 Eastern Standard Time.
- 55:24Today we started an hour later than usual because of the New York State law.
- 55:28The pitch swung on hit solidly to Robinson's right and out in the right center.
- 55:33There is Brown rounding second on his way to third.
- 55:35Snyder up to the ball whips his third.
- 55:36Cut off by Reese Woodling holds first.
- 55:38It's a solid line single to right center field.
- 55:43Jackie darted to his right as the ball hit the skin part of the infield after starting out as a liner.
- 55:49But as he attempted to backhand, he couldn't quite get to it and he went on out there for the base hit.
- 56:02So the Yankees have runners on first and third.
- 56:05That's their second hit off Barney and the batter is Cliff Mapes who took a third strike in the first inning.
- 56:11The left hand batter swings and foul chips it at the plate.
- 56:13Strike one.
- 56:15Barney delivered a curve ball up there.
- 56:24One strike to count.
- 56:25Brown on third.
- 56:27Woodling on first.
- 56:28Hodges holding against Jean.
- 56:29Banta starts to work the bullpen again for Brooklyn.
- 56:32Rex Barney stretches.
- 56:33Pitches.
- 56:34Mapes takes outside for the ball.
- 56:35Fast ball.
- 56:36It took off.
- 56:38Frank Versetti has a look in for Dugout.
- 56:40See if Casey Stengel has got anything in particular on his mind.
- 56:47Frank passes the signs along.
- 56:50Barney again ready.
- 56:51Throws.
- 56:52Mapes started to swing and held up at a curve.
- 56:54It's inside and Mapes in his effort to hold up fell away from the plate to his knees.
- 56:59Two balls.
- 57:00One strike.
- 57:01Brown on third and Woodling on first.
- 57:03The Yankees leading two to nothing.
- 57:04Third inning.
- 57:05Two men down.
- 57:10Dodgers young right hander looks in, gets his sign from Campanella.
- 57:13Again he's ready.
- 57:14Takes his stretch.
- 57:15Runners move off first and third.
- 57:16The pitch is swung on and missed.
- 57:17Forced strike two.
- 57:18Here's a breaking ball.
- 57:20And now Casey Stengel pops out of the Yankee dugout, hollers something at Cliff.
- 57:25One of Casey's favorite expressions as all managers do have.
- 57:29Just get a piece of the ball.
- 57:31Don't try to murder it.
- 57:32Two balls.
- 57:33Two strikes.
- 57:34Two on.
- 57:35Two nothing New York.
- 57:36Once again the runners move away from first and third.
- 57:38The pitch.
- 57:39Mapes swings and fouls it off to the left of the plate.
- 57:41Dog goes back to the screen.
- 57:59Barney with a new ball to work with.
- 58:01Two balls.
- 58:02Two strikes on Cliff Mapes.
- 58:03Two strikes on third.
- 58:04Woodling on first.
- 58:05Again the right hander has the stretch.
- 58:07Runners move.
- 58:08The pitch.
- 58:09It's low inside for ball three.
- 58:14Barney looks in as if to say, mm-hmm, that was close and it was.
- 58:23So we've got a full count on Mapes and with two down, Brown on third will be playing it
- 58:26safe.
- 58:27Woodling on first will be off and running.
- 58:30Barney stretches.
- 58:31Woodling ready to go.
- 58:32The pitch is outside ball four and they're loaded up.
- 58:39The sixth base on balls given up by Barney.
- 58:42Brown is on third.
- 58:43Woodling is on second.
- 58:45Mapes is on first.
- 58:46Milton Stock pokes his head out of the Dodger dugout and orders from Burt Schotton to see
- 58:49how bad it is looking out there warming up in the Dodger bullpen down the right field
- 58:53line.
- 58:54And the batter is Jerry Coleman.
- 58:58Jerry popped out on the second inning to Pee Wee Reese.
- 59:02Right hand hitter.
- 59:04Casey Stengel again pops his head out of the Yankee dugout located to the left of home
- 59:08plate and hollers his usual expression, get a piece of it Jerry.
- 59:12He's a choke hitter.
- 59:14Chokes up on that bat about three inches of batter in close to the plate.
- 59:17Brown leads off third.
- 59:18Woodling off second.
- 59:19Mapes off first.
- 59:20The wind up by Barney.
- 59:21In comes the pitch.
- 59:22Coleman takes outside ball one.
- 59:27One ball no strikes.
- 59:29The outfield is about straight away and there is Hermanski moving a couple of steps more
- 59:33over toward the right field line.
- 59:37Coleman can hit that ball just where it's pitched.
- 59:39He'll pull it, he'll hit it straight away, he'll hit it to right.
- 59:43Rex Barney into the wind up.
- 59:44In comes the pitch.
- 59:45Swung on.
- 59:46Hit on the hole between third and short to left field.
- 59:48Brown scores.
- 59:49Woodling rounds third.
- 59:50Dicks to the plate.
- 59:51The ball bobbled momentarily by Radcliffe.
- 59:52His throw is back to second base.
- 59:53Mapes gets back there in time.
- 59:54It's a two run single for Jerry Coleman.
- 59:57And the Yankees lead four to nothing and out of the dugout comes Dodger pitching coach
- 1:00:02Clyde Sutforth.
- 1:00:04Jerry Coleman coming up with a clutch single to left drive in two runs.
- 1:00:10Scoring Brown and Woodling.
- 1:00:12And all this action has happened after there were two men out and nobody on.
- 1:00:16Again the base on ball started it.
- 1:00:19With two down Brown walked.
- 1:00:20Woodling singles.
- 1:00:21Mapes walked and Coleman single to left.
- 1:00:23That's going to be all for Rex Barney and Jack Batha will come onto the scene.
- 1:00:28Jerry Coleman gets his fourth hit of the series.
- 1:00:35Driving in his second and third runs.
- 1:00:37There was Jerry Coleman's base clearing double in the eighth inning of the final game of
- 1:00:44The season a week ago today against the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:00:47The game of the Yankees there margin that carried him through the ninth inning against
- 1:00:54Boston.
- 1:00:55So Barney leaves after having gone two and two thirds innings and the fans give him a
- 1:01:06hand.
- 1:01:07He like Byrne is tough to hit but Wildness causes the trouble.
- 1:01:14Barney only allowed three hits but he walked six struck out to land.
- 1:01:21And now Jack Batha comes on.
- 1:01:33Erskine is going to work in the bullpen for Brooklyn.
- 1:01:38Batha has been in two games previously working a total of three and a third innings in this
- 1:01:45series.
- 1:01:46Allowing only two hits and giving up one walk striking out to and has not allowed any runs.
- 1:01:54The right hander starts his warmup gets four to nothing now in favor of New York as just
- 1:02:00concluded his warmup pitches from the mound and the first man he'll face will be Vic Grashee.
- 1:02:05Jack Batha, six foot, two hundred and sixty-five pounder from Hutchinson, Kansas goes to work
- 1:02:17with MAPES on second Coleman on first.
- 1:02:19His delivery to Grashee is curved swung on for strike one.
- 1:02:24Vic swung at that ball after his R.A. in Campanella's mid.
- 1:02:28Look I couldn't make up his mind whether he wanted to or not.
- 1:02:31Grashee walked in the second inning.
- 1:02:33Two runs are in here in the third.
- 1:02:35Four nothing New York.
- 1:02:40Batha ready.
- 1:02:41Throws.
- 1:02:42Pitch swung on hit through the short end to left center field for a base hit.
- 1:02:46MAPES rounds third comes in to score.
- 1:02:47The throw goes to second and Coleman dives back into the bag as Vic Grashee smacked a
- 1:02:52solid single to Reese's left in the left center to drive in the third run of the inning for
- 1:02:58New York.
- 1:03:01Scoring Cliff MAPES.
- 1:03:04And it's five to nothing in favor of the Yankees.
- 1:03:08And now coming up is Phil Rizzuto as Gil Hodges goes over the mound to talk to Jack.
- 1:03:24Batha allowed a single in the ninth inning of the first game here in Brooklyn.
- 1:03:29The first man he faced when he came under relief.
- 1:03:31Rizzuto swings and fouls a pitch off to the right of the plate.
- 1:03:34That also scored a run.
- 1:03:35He allowed a single to Coleman, the first man he faced, and then was all right thereafter.
- 1:03:42That run of course is charged to Rex Barney.
- 1:03:45It was put on by him.
- 1:03:46Coleman's on second.
- 1:03:47Grashee on first two down.
- 1:03:49Three in.
- 1:03:50Five nothing Yankees.
- 1:03:51Phil Rizzuto takes low for a ball.
- 1:03:52One and one.
- 1:03:53The scooter walked in sacrifice previously.
- 1:03:55He's not been charged with a time at bat in this ball game.
- 1:04:03Yankee pitchers have done pretty well helping themselves in the hitting department this
- 1:04:07series.
- 1:04:08There's a pitch inside.
- 1:04:09Rizzuto drops to the ground.
- 1:04:10Ball two.
- 1:04:11Two and one to count.
- 1:04:14All the damage done here in the third inning after the two men were out, nobody on.
- 1:04:20Brown walked.
- 1:04:21Woodling single.
- 1:04:22MAPES walked to load him up.
- 1:04:23Coleman single.
- 1:04:24The first out went Barney in came Banner.
- 1:04:25Grashee greeted him with a single to score MAPES.
- 1:04:28Coleman's on second.
- 1:04:29Grashee on first.
- 1:04:30Two balls, one strike on Rizzuto.
- 1:04:31The right-hander for the Dodgers stretches, pitches.
- 1:04:34Rizzuto takes a curve outside for ball three.
- 1:04:36Three and one.
- 1:04:38Carl Erskine continues to limber up in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:04:46Banner kicks the dirt out in front of the rubber.
- 1:04:55Get you a sign from Roy.
- 1:04:57Runners lead.
- 1:04:58Now the pitch.
- 1:04:59And it's in there for Carl.
- 1:05:00Strike two.
- 1:05:01Fast ball.
- 1:05:02Got plenty of the inside of the plate.
- 1:05:03And around the letters.
- 1:05:04So with a full count on Rizzuto, three balls, two strikes, and with two outs, Coleman, who
- 1:05:09is on second, Grashee, who is on first, will be off and running with the pitch.
- 1:05:15Coleman and Grashee ready to go.
- 1:05:16There they go.
- 1:05:17The pitch swung on as they drive to left center field.
- 1:05:20Duke Snyder moves over to get under it, and he makes the catch.
- 1:05:25So eight men batted for New York.
- 1:05:27Three of them scored.
- 1:05:29Three hits.
- 1:05:33No Dodger errors, and two Yankees left on.
- 1:05:38The score at the end of two and a half innings, the Yankees five, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:05:43Friends, you heard Earl Torgeson of the Boston Braves say Gillette Blue Blades are tops with
- 1:05:48him because they're always easy shaving, always consistently good.
- 1:05:53Now folks, there are many reasons for that, including 71 separate inspections that assure
- 1:05:58absolutely uniform quality.
- 1:06:00Basically, however, Gillette Blue Blades are superior because they're infinitely sharper,
- 1:06:06smoother finished, and longer lasting.
- 1:06:08In short, they're made of steel that takes an edge and holds it, so they never break
- 1:06:13down prematurely like ordinary blades that scrape and pull.
- 1:06:17For extra convenience at no extra cost, buy Gillette Blue Blades in the Gillette Dispenser
- 1:06:23that zips them out unwrapped.
- 1:06:25It makes blade changing a cinch, saves time and bother.
- 1:06:29You get 20 blades, 40 shaving edges for 98 cents, 10 blades for 49 cents.
- 1:06:35Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp.
- 1:06:39Use Gillette Blue Blades for the sharpest edges ever honed.
- 1:06:46Vic Brashee, taking his time coming out of the Yankee dugout to the mound, he was on the
- 1:06:50bases, gives us time to identify ourselves.
- 1:06:55And so we pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:06:59This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 1:07:03World Series exclusively over WOR.
- 1:07:05See it on WOR TV, Channel 9, WOR and WORFM, New York.
- 1:07:18This is Mel Allen speaking to you from Ebbets Field, Red Barber, and I'm very happy to bring
- 1:07:25you this World Series, which is the 11th consecutive one brought to you by the Gillette Safety
- 1:07:30Racer Company, and Jim Britt doing the television, Renee Canazares beaming it to our Latin American
- 1:07:36neighbors.
- 1:07:37And now on the last of the third inning, first pitch is in there for a call strike to Marvin
- 1:07:41Radclay, a left-hand batter.
- 1:07:47Marv, a 5'10, 170 pounder from Wallaholla, South Carolina.
- 1:07:53Brashee throws, it's swung on and fouled off the chest protector of Cal Hubbard's, it got
- 1:07:58by Barrow for strike two.
- 1:08:03Five to nothing, favor of New York, last of the third inning.
- 1:08:06This broadcast is also being heard around the world through the facilities of the Armed
- 1:08:10Forces Radio Service.
- 1:08:12Our troops, our boys and girls in service wherever they may be stationed.
- 1:08:20Brashee studies, Barrow sign, going to work.
- 1:08:23Around comes the right arm, in comes the pitch, and it is swung on and fouled, tipped, but
- 1:08:26into the mid of Barrow for strike three.
- 1:08:28We had to hold up and wait to see if Barrow held onto the ball as did Cal Hubbard before
- 1:08:32he would call him out.
- 1:08:34And now here's Roy Campanella.
- 1:08:44Brashee's second strikeout in this ball game, his sixth in the series.
- 1:08:54Roy Campanella, right hand batter.
- 1:08:58Brashee delivers, fastball just outside, ball one.
- 1:09:02Campanella's had three for twelve, including a home run in the series for Brooklyn.
- 1:09:08Outfield around toward left infield, shaded well around toward third, brown deep, five
- 1:09:11feet off the line, resumed over toward the gap, the pitch, right over for a call strike,
- 1:09:16evens up the count now, one and one.
- 1:09:18One ball, one strike, one out, last of third, New York fire, Brooklyn nothing.
- 1:09:23Yankees leading games three to one.
- 1:09:29Here's your one-one service.
- 1:09:31Campanella takes fastball outside for ball two, two and one.
- 1:09:36In the game that Brashee pitched against the Dodgers at the stadium, second game of the
- 1:09:40series, he used quite a number of curve balls.
- 1:09:44He has been featuring primarily fast stuff so far today.
- 1:09:48Now the two-one pitch, swung on, hit Sharpie down the third baseline, by Brown into the
- 1:09:53left field corner, Woodling goes over into the corner, chases the ball up with it, fires
- 1:09:56to second base, there's Campanella going in, the throw is toward third and Campanella's
- 1:10:00on second with the double.
- 1:10:15Gene Woodling, after he fielded that ball, we were watching Campanella and figuring Woodling
- 1:10:20to be throwing to second, but instead he fired toward third, it caught Brown a little bit
- 1:10:25off guard and it got by him, but Barrow was backing up, and it's a double for Campanella,
- 1:10:30The first hit given up by Rashee.
- 1:10:35Jack Banta is going to come up to hit for himself.
- 1:10:43Jerry Coleman's over to talk to Rashee.
- 1:10:51That was the fifth Dodger double of this series.
- 1:10:54Rashee throws to Banta, left-hand hitter, it's in there for a called strike.
- 1:11:06Banta is figured to be only a fair hitter as a pitcher, but anytime a man's up there
- 1:11:11swinging a batch, you got to be wary of him.
- 1:11:14A curve is swung on, a ground ball hit to Henrik, he's up with it, out runs Banta with
- 1:11:18The bag, going to third is Campanella, they're two down, and coming up is Peewee Reese.
- 1:11:23Banta grounds out to Henrik unassisted.
- 1:11:26Rashee ran over to cover, but Henrik said, I'll take him, and did.
- 1:11:33Now we go to the top of the Brooklyn order, and here's Peewee Reese, grounded to Rizzuto
- 1:11:39on the first inning, hitting a sharp one-hopper to the scooter.
- 1:11:44Brown moves in close at third, ready to move in on a top ball.
- 1:11:51Not necessarily figuring Reese to be bunting with two outs, but then you always have to
- 1:11:55watch every possibility, whether it be the unexpected or not in baseball.
- 1:11:58Campanella on third, two down, here's the pitch to Reese, outside, ball one,
- 1:12:03Spider Jorgensen on deck, outfield shaded toward left for Reese, stands in fairly close
- 1:12:10to the plate, slightly open stance, holds the bat down at the end of the handle, pretty
- 1:12:15much.
- 1:12:17Rashee starts his windup, around comes the right arm, in comes the pitch, strike call,
- 1:12:22a fast ball in there just above the knees, and the count is now even up at one and one.
- 1:12:27Reese wants Cal Huber to have a look at the ball, and Cal gives a new one to Barra and
- 1:12:31tosses the one that Rashee just had out of the game.
- 1:12:37Might have been discolored.
- 1:12:40Ball player's figure is tough enough to see those pitches coming up there without
- 1:12:44pitcher throwing one that might have been stained by hitting the grass or being
- 1:12:48discolored through the rubbing up process or getting into the dirt one way or another.
- 1:12:52One ball, one strike, two down, Campanella on third, last to the third, five-nothing
- 1:12:56New York, in comes the pitch, Reese swings, bounce it off to the right of the plate,
- 1:13:00out of play, way back into the upper deck, and the count is one and two.
- 1:13:10This has been just about the warmest day that we have had in the series.
- 1:13:20A lot of blue upstairs, patches of white, maybe some clouds just in behind us where
- 1:13:26The sun is because it's not out too strongly at the moment.
- 1:13:31And as we speak, it fades away almost altogether.
- 1:13:34Here's your pitch, swung on a ground ball, hit in the hole between first and second,
- 1:13:37out of the right field for a base hit.
- 1:13:39Campanella comes in to score, mates up with the ball, flips to Rasuto, and Reese is on
- 1:13:43with a run-producing single to right field.
- 1:13:53So the Pee-wee came through in the clutch.
- 1:13:57He's one of your great money ball players.
- 1:14:01Getting his fifth hit of the series and driving in his second run.
- 1:14:06Hit the ball to the opposite field, on the ground, in between first and second, where
- 1:14:09The Yankees were least expecting them to hit.
- 1:14:13It's now a five-to-one ball game, and here is Piter Jorgensen, left-hand hitter up,
- 1:14:17The stretch by Rasci, the pitch, swung on to high, pop-up, out back of second.
- 1:14:21Rasuto is under the ball, waiting for her to come down, Reese running, and Bill makes
- 1:14:25The catch for the out-to-end, the inning.
- 1:14:28One run for Brooklyn, two hits, no Yankee errors, one left on for the Dodgers.
- 1:14:33And the score at the end of three innings and the totals, the Yankees, five runs,
- 1:14:37four hits, no errors, five left on.
- 1:14:39Brooklyn, one run, two hits, one error, and one man left on.
- 1:14:44Red?
- 1:14:45Yes, ma'am?
- 1:14:46In all the years that you've been watching that great guy, great performer, Pee-wee Reese,
- 1:14:50I guess you've seen him come through on the clutch many a time.
- 1:14:53Well, Reese and Rasuto have, at shortstop, given us all that you'd ever expect to see
- 1:14:59in the World Series at that position.
- 1:15:01And both also have been very well up at the plate, and they have run bases very well.
- 1:15:07Frank Frisch, last evening I happened to bump into him, and of course he's been an infielder himself
- 1:15:14and managed ball clubs, played in more World Series games than anybody else.
- 1:15:18And his eye has been taken.
- 1:15:20Of course he admits to being an old broken-down infielder.
- 1:15:22Now he watches infielders first.
- 1:15:24But he was talking about the work of Rasuto and Reese.
- 1:15:26And I think actually that few fans appreciate either one as much as they should,
- 1:15:31because neither Rasuto nor Reese have any eccentricities.
- 1:15:35They try and make everything look easy.
- 1:15:38They play very smoothly.
- 1:15:40In fact, as Brett Schotton says, Reese should apply it to both.
- 1:15:44They are ringers, Mel.
- 1:15:46In other words, they're pros.
- 1:15:48That's right.
- 1:15:50As we go to the fourth inning, Yankees 5, Dodgers 1.
- 1:15:54Tommy Henrik, Yogi Vera, and Joe DiMaggio are coming up for New York.
- 1:15:59Jack Banta, right-hander throws to Henrik.
- 1:16:02Curve inside, ball one.
- 1:16:04For you late tuners in, Rex Barney was the starting pitcher for Brooklyn.
- 1:16:08Went two and two-thirds innings, gave up three hits, and was out of there.
- 1:16:12In comes the pitch now, swung on and missed by Henrik as he went all the way on that one.
- 1:16:21All the runs that the Yankees have scored are charged to Barney.
- 1:16:27Banta throws, change up and it's outside, ball two, two and one.
- 1:16:32Outfield swung way around toward right for Henrik.
- 1:16:35Jorgensen about a dozen feet off the third baseline,
- 1:16:38four steps away from the edge of the infield,
- 1:16:39grass race about three strides to the left of second.
- 1:16:42Here's your pitch, swung on by Henrik, a ground ball hit to Robinson going to his right upper that throws over to Hodges.
- 1:16:46Henrik is out.
- 1:16:48Tommy Henrik grounding out.
- 1:16:50Robinson to Hodges, second to first.
- 1:16:52Here's Yogi Vera.
- 1:16:55The St. Louis lads struck out in the first inning, bounced out to the pitcher in the third.
- 1:17:03Yogi bemoans the fates that cost him an injury on his left thumb.
- 1:17:07There's a pitch that's outside for a ball.
- 1:17:10And he remarked that he was sorry that his thumb hurt him so because he's had a lot of good pitches to hit but hadn't been able to swing hard on him, he said.
- 1:17:23Banta delivers, Yogi takes inside, little old ball two.
- 1:17:29Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:17:30One out.
- 1:17:31Fourth inning.
- 1:17:32Yankees five, Dodgers one.
- 1:17:34Outfield infield set up.
- 1:17:36Same for Vera as for Henrik.
- 1:17:38Right-hander Jack Banta comes in with a pitch that's outside the curve ball.
- 1:17:43Three-nothing to count.
- 1:17:50Banta to the rosin bag, gives it a touch, wipes his hand across the letters of the uniform.
- 1:17:56Anyway, for that three-nothing pitch, aims it over the plate and it is in there for the called strike, three-and-one.
- 1:18:03Gil Hodges deep at first and almost on top of that first baseline.
- 1:18:08Jackie Robinson halfway between first and second and back deep.
- 1:18:12Now the three-one pitch from Banta to Vera.
- 1:18:14Swung on, lined right to Hodges for out number two.
- 1:18:22Two up and two away and here's Joe DiMaggio who twice has been the victim of spectacular catches by center fielder Duke Snyder.
- 1:18:31In the first inning, Duke went to the wall and straight center field, deep center field, the 393-foot sign leaped and caught DiMaggio's drive over his head.
- 1:18:39Here's your delivery.
- 1:18:41Inside to Joe for a ball.
- 1:18:43The last time that DiMaggio was up, he drilled a smart liner in the center and Snyder came running in at top speed and gloved it about a foot off the ground.
- 1:18:53Banta throws.
- 1:18:54DiMaggio takes low outside for ball two.
- 1:18:56Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:18:57Two outs.
- 1:18:58In the second inning, New York 5, Brooklyn 1.
- 1:19:02Bobby Brown on deck.
- 1:19:04Outfield is swung around toward left infield, shaded well around toward third.
- 1:19:10Joe with that classic stance of his, bat cocked up off his right shoulder.
- 1:19:13On the next pitch swings and sends a long drive.
- 1:19:15It stays fair and goes all the way.
- 1:19:17It is going.
- 1:19:18It is going.
- 1:19:19It is going.
- 1:19:45DiMaggio made sure this time nobody was going to make a spectacular catch and the boys greet him because he's had a rough series in the base hit department.
- 1:19:53And the entire team practically came out and met him in front of the dugout and patted him on the back.
- 1:19:58Here's Bobby Brown.
- 1:19:59Strike one call over the inside corner.
- 1:20:02Joe made sure that this time nobody was going to rob him.
- 1:20:05Hit a high towering drive into the lower left field seats that just did go into the right of the foul pole as that ball was hooking.
- 1:20:13Now the pitch to Brown.
- 1:20:15Strike two call over the inside corner.
- 1:20:16The ball cleared the 348 foot mark.
- 1:20:19And yet he was out when he drove one nearly 400 feet, 393 feet to be exact, in straightaway center.
- 1:20:26That's DiMaggio's sixth World Series homer.
- 1:20:30This is the eighth series in which he has participated.
- 1:20:32The pitch is swung on and missed strike three for Bobby Brown.
- 1:20:35And Campanello flipped the ball down to Jorgensen at third, though it was the third out.
- 1:20:40It shows you that sometimes the power of concentration in the World Series will do certain things to certain fellows.
- 1:20:46Strike three.
- 1:20:48One run for New York, one hit.
- 1:20:50No errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:20:52Nobody left on.
- 1:20:53And a hand for DiMaggio.
- 1:20:55And the crowd tweets him going out into center field.
- 1:20:58And the score at the end of three and a half innings, the Yankees six, the Dodgers one.
- 1:21:05Last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:21:07Duke Snyder leads off with the Dodgers left-hand batter, struck out in the first inning, rashy pitches.
- 1:21:11Duke takes a curve over for a call strike.
- 1:21:14Jackie Robinson on deck.
- 1:21:16Hermanski to follow.
- 1:21:19There was a wild rumor that spread briefly before the ballgame concerning DiMaggio,
- 1:21:23but it was quickly scotched that he was back in the hospital with a 103 degree fever.
- 1:21:27Here's a pitch swung on and missed strike two.
- 1:21:29Duke cut hard.
- 1:21:33That was one story that was easy to trace down and scotch in a hurry because all he had to do was go down to the Yankee dressing room when the team arrived.
- 1:21:40And there was Joe with his son, Joe Jr., Joe putting on his uniform.
- 1:21:45The right-hander comes in with his pitch and it's swung on and missed strike three.
- 1:21:52And Snyder goes down, striking out for the seventh time in the series.
- 1:21:59Now Jackie Robinson steps in.
- 1:22:02Robbed with a base hit in the second inning by Jerry Coleman.
- 1:22:06On a sinking line of the Jerry Glove.
- 1:22:12Outfield, shifts around toward left, shades around toward third on the infield,
- 1:22:16frown in close to third in the event of a bunt or top roller.
- 1:22:18Big crash into the lineup, throws, strike call, fastball through there.
- 1:22:26New York six, Brooklyn one, last to fourth.
- 1:22:31Robinson stands deep in the batter's box, just a little way away from the plate.
- 1:22:34Rashie's delivery, curve, swung on, hit right back through the middle out over second in the center for a base hit.
- 1:22:39Joe DiMaggio comes in, scoops the ball up off the green carpet, throws in the second to Rizzuto.
- 1:22:43And Robinson holds on at first with a single to center.
- 1:22:47There was a curve ball that he hit and he was just waiting for it.
- 1:22:51Hit it right back through the middle.
- 1:22:54That's the third hit off Rashie.
- 1:22:56And now coming to bat is Gene Hermanski, who flied out to MAPES in the second inning.
- 1:23:04Left hand batter, Bobby Brown about five feet off third, two steps away from the edge of the infield grass.
- 1:23:10Rizzuto three steps to the left of second in halfway.
- 1:23:13Now your pitch, swung on, it's a high fly ball out into short left.
- 1:23:17Woodling trots in, towards short, under the ball.
- 1:23:20Rizzuto hollers, take it Gene, he does.
- 1:23:22Robinson halfway to second turns and shoots back to first.
- 1:23:25Hermanski flies out to Woodling in short left.
- 1:23:30And now coming to bat is Gil Hodges, who grounded a short in the second inning.
- 1:23:37Tommy Henrik hollers to Rashie, I'm going to play halfway, or I'm going to play not on the bag rather,
- 1:23:42against Robinson but in behind him.
- 1:23:44Now Henrik moves in and has a look at Casey Stengel in the Yankee dugout to see where he wants him to play.
- 1:23:49Meantime, Gil Hodges, right hand hitter steps in, stands away from the plate,
- 1:23:55fairly deep in the batter's box, open stance.
- 1:23:58Outfield around toward left, they claim the pull toward left field.
- 1:24:01Here's your pitch, curve, and it's inside for a ball.
- 1:24:04One ball, no strikes.
- 1:24:08We'll watch Jackie Robinson for you in the event he does decide to take off and try to steal second.
- 1:24:15Jerry Coleman moves in a step or two, hollers something to Rashie.
- 1:24:18In the second inning, New York 6, Brooklyn 1.
- 1:24:24Woodling is way back deep in left.
- 1:24:26Rashie stretches, Robbie dances off first.
- 1:24:29Henrik moves over to first, here's the pitch, and it's outside, ball two.
- 1:24:35Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:24:39Robinson danced off first as if he might be thinking of going down,
- 1:24:43and Henrik who was in behind him then came dashing over to first.
- 1:24:46Rashie had a look, but instead of throwing to Henrik, came into the plate with it.
- 1:24:50Robinson widens his lead a bit, stretched by Rashie, you look at Jackie.
- 1:24:55There's the pitch, and it's in there for a strike.
- 1:24:58Jackie bluffed to dash to second that time, thought he was going to go.
- 1:25:03Two and one, they count on Hodges.
- 1:25:07Robinson and Hodges now exchange glances.
- 1:25:13They stand down, Rashie with the stretch, a look.
- 1:25:17Here's your pitch, swung on, lying out in the right field corner,
- 1:25:19and Robinson might possibly score on his rounding second, headed for third.
- 1:25:23Mape plays the rebound beautifully, he throws in to Rizzuto
- 1:25:25and holds Hodges to a single and Robinson to third.
- 1:25:29Cliff Mape's beautiful play of that ball off the right field wall,
- 1:25:33held that blow to a single as Hodges lined it into the right field corner,
- 1:25:37and Mape, who was over in the right center, dashed over
- 1:25:40and played the rebound perfectly to keep Jackie Robinson from scoring
- 1:25:44and keep Hodges from taking the extra bases.
- 1:25:47So Hodges lined a single into the right field corner,
- 1:25:51sending Robinson to third, and the batter is Mar Brackley,
- 1:25:55who struck out in the third inning.
- 1:26:00And immediately, Carl Hurskin starts to warm up in the Dodger bullpen,
- 1:26:07with Burchot inevitably having in mind the injection of a pinch hitter
- 1:26:13for Banton, should Brackley, who now is at bat, and Campanella, who follows, get on.
- 1:26:19Score, Yankee six, Brooklyn one, the last half of the fourth,
- 1:26:23Robinson on third, Hodges on first, two men down,
- 1:26:28Brackley left hand hitter up, stretch the pitch, outside, ball one.
- 1:26:40There's nobody warming up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:26:47Vick again ready, he throws, inside, ball two, Robinson on third,
- 1:26:54Hodges on first, two down, and stretch by Raschi.
- 1:26:57Here's the pitch, strike call, got the inside corner, just below the belt,
- 1:27:03two-one count on Marv, Bobby Brown's in close at third,
- 1:27:10Rizzuto four strides to the left of second in halfway,
- 1:27:13Jerry Coleman deep, four strides to the right of second,
- 1:27:16Henrik just in behind Hodges at first, a two-one count on Brackley,
- 1:27:22again Raschi is set.
- 1:27:24Here's the pitch, Brackley takes low inside for ball three,
- 1:27:31Roy Campanella is on deck, and now Jim Turner comes out of the Yankee dugout
- 1:27:38on orders from Casey Stengel and motions for action in the Yankee bullpen,
- 1:27:44and it's Fred Sanford getting up.
- 1:27:49Just as Raschi takes his stretch, Brackley steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:27:52Raschi is perspiring rather freely, the upper portion of his uniform shirt
- 1:27:57absolutely wet.
- 1:28:00Are we ready for the three-one pitch, runners on first and third,
- 1:28:03here it is, and it is strike two, call right over.
- 1:28:07Brackley started at first and was called back by Hubbard going up with the right hand.
- 1:28:21So you've got a full count on Brackley, three and two,
- 1:28:26and with two down Robinson will be playing it safe at third,
- 1:28:30that is he'll make sure that the ball is hit somewhere before he starts running.
- 1:28:34Gil Hodges who's on first on the other hand and who is forced will be off and running with the pitch.
- 1:28:38So the stretch by Raschi, there goes Hodges, the pitch is one-one and he missed strike three.
- 1:28:45How about that?
- 1:28:48No runs for Brooklyn, two hits, no errors for the Yankees,
- 1:28:54and two men left on for the Dodgers.
- 1:28:57And just as Raschi was on the verge, he recovered in time to strike out Brackley in the clutch.
- 1:29:05And so the score at the end of four innings, the Yankees six, the Dodgers one.
- 1:29:11Your totals, Yankees six runs, five hits, no errors, five left on,
- 1:29:16Brooklyn one run, four hits, one error, and three men left on base.
- 1:29:20This is Mel Allen with Red Barber bringing you the World Series from Ebbets Field.
- 1:29:24Gene Woodling up, takes a pitch inside for ball one as we go to the top of the fifth inning
- 1:29:31where the Yankees leading six to one.
- 1:29:34Woodling walked and singled to center.
- 1:29:36Right-hander ready for jacked down the throws, right over for a called strike fastball,
- 1:29:40and the count is even up at one and one.
- 1:29:43The fans exercising their prerogative are hollering at the umpire.
- 1:29:51In comes the pitch, and it's high and outside for ball two, two and one.
- 1:29:57Two balls, one strike.
- 1:29:59The men in blue do a great job.
- 1:30:02Without them, baseball wouldn't be what it is.
- 1:30:05The two-one delivery on its way.
- 1:30:08Swung on, there's a long drive to right field.
- 1:30:10There's Hormanski racing back.
- 1:30:11The ball's off the scoreboard. Gene plays it off.
- 1:30:13Now Snyder comes over to get his.
- 1:30:15It rolls away from Gene, and there's Woodling sliding into second with a double.
- 1:30:21Gene Woodling lines a double off the scoreboard in right center field.
- 1:30:27The rebound got away from Hormanski.
- 1:30:30It didn't rebound directly at him, but at an angle,
- 1:30:33and Duke Snyder figuring that possibility came racing over from center field to grab the ball,
- 1:30:39but his throw in to second was not in time,
- 1:30:42and Woodling is on with a double off the right field scoreboard.
- 1:30:51Here's Swift-Mapes.
- 1:30:54Left-hand hitter.
- 1:30:55Banda's pitch curve inside ball one.
- 1:31:01Mapes struck out and walked.
- 1:31:08Woodling's only other hit in this series was a double,
- 1:31:11and it was here at Abbott's Field in almost the same spot.
- 1:31:14Banda pitches.
- 1:31:15Mapes takes inside around the knees for ball two.
- 1:31:17Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:31:21Now the pitch.
- 1:31:22It's butted at for a strike and missed by Mapes.
- 1:31:25That pitch was way outside, but Mapes had his mind made up.
- 1:31:28He was going to bunt and did.
- 1:31:29That ball was two feet outside.
- 1:31:33So it's a two-one count.
- 1:31:35I said a moment ago that Woodling's only other hit in the series was a double.
- 1:31:38I meant prior to today.
- 1:31:40Today he's had a walk, a single, and a double.
- 1:31:45Woodling moves off second, 6-1 New York.
- 1:31:47Fifth inning, the pitch is butted out toward the mound.
- 1:31:50There is Banda up with it, throws over to Hodges for the out.
- 1:31:54Moving to third on the play with Woodling as the sacrifice for Mapes.
- 1:31:58As Casey Stengel with a 6-1 lead figures every other run he can get now
- 1:32:04means just that much tougher road the Dodgers will have to hold to stay alive in this World Series.
- 1:32:10Mapes is out as he bunts down the first base line.
- 1:32:13Banda to Hodges.
- 1:32:17Here's Jerry Coleman.
- 1:32:18Jorgensen moves over from third now to talk to Banda.
- 1:32:22The attendance today, 33,711.
- 1:32:28Gate receipts $167,165.45.
- 1:32:34The players, of course, get their shares out of the first four games.
- 1:32:39And it has been estimated that the winning team share will be just a little over $5,000.
- 1:32:45And the losing team share just a little over $4,000 per player.
- 1:32:49In field, in, in comes the pitch.
- 1:32:51Jerry Coleman swings and sends the ground ball to Hodges, gets off his glove.
- 1:32:54Here comes Woodling taking the plate.
- 1:32:55The throw is in and not in time.
- 1:32:57Woodling scored as Hodges had grabbed the ball, stepped on first to retire Coleman
- 1:33:01and almost had the chance for an unusual double play at the plate.
- 1:33:04But he threw in a hurry off balance and off to the right of the plate, into the dirt.
- 1:33:09It had to be blocked by Campanella and he was at least 5 to 10 feet away from the plate
- 1:33:14up the first base line and had no chance to get Woodling.
- 1:33:17It was an unusual play with so much happening at once that you couldn't get it all in at one time.
- 1:33:23Woodling had come up the line from third but when the ball was hit sharply to Hodges with the infield in,
- 1:33:28Woodling decided not to go.
- 1:33:30But when the ball skipped off the glove of Hodges, he came on in.
- 1:33:33Now Rashie takes the fastball in for a strike.
- 1:33:36The ball skipped off the glove of Hodges, rolled across the foul line.
- 1:33:39He grabbed it, stepped on first in time to get Coleman, then threw to the plate trying to get Woodling,
- 1:33:43who then decided he ought to run.
- 1:33:45Now the pitch, swung on and missed, strike two by Rashie.
- 1:33:48So Coleman is out, Hodges unassisted, is credited with a run back in, his third of the ballgame.
- 1:33:57The Yankees lead 7-1. Rashie, who walked and singled, on the next pitch,
- 1:34:01takes over the outside corner for a call strike three.
- 1:34:05One run for the Yankees, one hit, no errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:34:12Nobody left on for New York and the score at the end of four and one half innings of play,
- 1:34:19New York 7, Brooklyn 1.
- 1:34:26And as we get ready to go into the last half of the fifth inning,
- 1:34:29all set to move into the Gillette microphone is Red Barber.
- 1:34:35And it's always great to be able to work with a great announcer.
- 1:34:41Red, I mean that from the heart and it's always a wonderful pleasure
- 1:34:45to be able to associate with you on these World Series broadcasts or any other.
- 1:34:50Thank you Mel, and at the two-way street, now Big Rashie trying to nail down the World Series to New York,
- 1:34:54makes his first pitch to Campanella a good one for a call strike
- 1:34:57as we move along with the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:35:01Big crowd sitting and sort of stirring restlessly.
- 1:35:06The Yankees on top of a big score now, 7 to 1, third ball is over for a call strike.
- 1:35:11Nothing in two.
- 1:35:13That was a nice one that he spun off.
- 1:35:15Rashie on the mound, this is his second appearance, as Mel pointed out to you.
- 1:35:20He started the second game, he's coming back with two days rest.
- 1:35:23He won 21 ball games, was a strong man on the mound staff for the Yankees,
- 1:35:27in case his single out of nothing else than sentiment would give his biggest winner,
- 1:35:31who puts the pennant winning game Sunday, an opportunity to go today.
- 1:35:35Throw, curve ball outside, ball one.
- 1:35:38What we mean by sentiment was that if Stengel had started somebody else and the Yankees had won today,
- 1:35:44then Rashie would not get a chance to get even with the Boards.
- 1:35:47He was the losing pitcher in game two.
- 1:35:50So that's why he drew the assignment today, among other reasons of course.
- 1:35:54It may very well be that Stengel felt he was his best possible pitcher anyhow.
- 1:35:58Curve outside, and it's ball two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:02Fulabara, who's had to catch through the series with a bruised left thumb,
- 1:36:06every one of these pitches hurts him.
- 1:36:08That's a jaw there, as that ball settles in that catching mitt.
- 1:36:12Barra down to give the sign, big cow Hubbard,
- 1:36:14working balls and strikes standing directly behind the receiver.
- 1:36:17Here's the right-hander's two-two pitch, fastball swung on and foul,
- 1:36:20straight back on the screen and out of play.
- 1:36:23Campanella's up for his second at bat.
- 1:36:25Rashie, was just moving along with the efficiency of a well-oiled machine,
- 1:36:29and knocking off the first seven batters, so Campanella doubled in the third inning,
- 1:36:33and two down, re-singling him over, look from the front.
- 1:36:37I feel very much around toward left.
- 1:36:39There's a slight breeze that is blowing out toward left,
- 1:36:41but it is not a too strong game factor.
- 1:36:44Campanella hits a high foul, back out of play again, still two and two.
- 1:36:48As Mel gave you the figures a few moments ago,
- 1:36:50it was brought in by the Book of the Ropes Secretary, Hal Park, 33,711.
- 1:36:54Here to see this fifth game of the series, third game of the set at Ebbets Field.
- 1:37:00Now let's see, this end of game carries on.
- 1:37:03Rashie pitches again, two and two.
- 1:37:05Campanella hits a hot fly and drive right at the receiver.
- 1:37:08Here's the right-hander's two-two pitch, fastball swung on and foul,
- 1:37:11straight back on the screen, out of play.
- 1:37:13Campanella drives on, Rashie pitches again, two and two, Campanella hits a hot fly and drive right at the receiver,
- 1:37:18and a fine little trot step, holds it as he dips into the hole between third and short.
- 1:37:23Still, one up, one away, last half of the fifth.
- 1:37:27The Yankee defense has been extremely sound.
- 1:37:30Outside of a boop which meant nothing,
- 1:37:33The way Raddick was pitching the opening game by Coleman, there have been no other mistakes.
- 1:37:38Now Pinscherter, Tommy Brown, a right-hand batter, is coming up to hit the batter.
- 1:37:42Samantha, who has relieved for the last two and the third innings, is out of there.
- 1:37:47And Brown, making his second appearance as a pinch hitter, he's 0-1.
- 1:37:50Slender, right-hand hitter, takes a fastball through there for a called strike.
- 1:37:54Rashie, who is primarily our control pitcher, is making his pitches good as early as he
- 1:38:01can on these hitters.
- 1:38:02He's pitching with a 6-run lead.
- 1:38:06Works curveball too high, and it is 1-1.
- 1:38:10One ball, one strike.
- 1:38:11Brown hitting for batter, in the last of the fifth.
- 1:38:16Rashie not wasting much time.
- 1:38:20Carl Erskine is the only pitcher working the book on both ends, trying to stand our own
- 1:38:24so we presume it will be he who will come on to pitch against the top of the Yankee
- 1:38:28batting order in the sixth inning.
- 1:38:31New York 7, book and one, fastball, swing on, fouled off, and the count now goes 1-2.
- 1:38:36The ball swung back and into the permanent press box, which is suspended from the roof
- 1:38:41of these double-back stands here at Ebbets Field.
- 1:38:44So one of the members of the Fourth Estate has a World Series souvenir.
- 1:38:51One ball, two strikes.
- 1:38:52Out to your left.
- 1:38:56Infield is straight away.
- 1:38:57That's Henrik, Coleman, Frazzuto, and Brown.
- 1:39:03Rashie works 1-2.
- 1:39:04First one on and missed, the strike three, so Brown.
- 1:39:08They're set down and it's the fifth strikeout for Rashie.
- 1:39:12Well, fires the ball down to third.
- 1:39:16Brown trucks over toward the mound, tosses it on the hand now to the pitcher.
- 1:39:21Let's see, the outfield moves a step more toward left.
- 1:39:25That's Woodling in left field, who's had a perfect afternoon with a walk, single and
- 1:39:28double.
- 1:39:29DiMaggio, and I know that the sentimental heart of the American public was glad to see
- 1:39:33him belt one, is in center, and the right fielder's Mates.
- 1:39:36Peewee Reese up, pass ball over for a called strike.
- 1:39:40Peewee leads the Dodgers with the most hits he has far.
- 1:39:45One for two today.
- 1:39:46Five for 16 for the series.
- 1:39:47Swings, there's another one, a line drive over third down in left field.
- 1:39:54So Reese is on at first.
- 1:39:56And this fine money player for the Dodgers, ever since he came up in 1940, continues to
- 1:40:02show why people consider him one of the fine shortstop anywhere around.
- 1:40:07Line single into left.
- 1:40:10And hit number five for Brooklyn.
- 1:40:12Jorgensen, the smallish, south-forth swinging third baseman.
- 1:40:18Jorgensen is 0 for 2 today and is 2 for 11 in the series.
- 1:40:22Rashie pitches, pass ball, swung on, trickled up toward first.
- 1:40:25Henry comes on, picks up the ball, and steps on the bag for the third out.
- 1:40:28So that ends Madison, the last of the defending.
- 1:40:31No runs, one hit.
- 1:40:33Well, the check are five inning totals.
- 1:40:36For the Yankees, seven runs.
- 1:40:38They're all official miscorded earned.
- 1:40:40A half a dozen hits into New York and errorless defense.
- 1:40:44Far for the Dodgers, one run.
- 1:40:45Off Rashie, which is earned.
- 1:40:47Five hits, which have been pretty well scattered.
- 1:40:50And for the Dodgers, one error, which was Barney's throwing error in the first inning.
- 1:40:54Barney was wild at the bell.
- 1:40:56And that wildness so far has been the turning point of the ball game.
- 1:41:01He walked the first two hitters and then in throwing high to second base on a pickoff
- 1:41:04play, moved them over an extra notch.
- 1:41:07Well, that's the Brooklyn Dodgers and Barney over saluting now the commissioner and Governor
- 1:41:13Dewey and playing the either-or-the-odder fellow.
- 1:41:19Speaking about the runs being officially scored as earned a moment ago, we'd like to comment
- 1:41:25that the work of the three official scorers, as appointed by Commissioner Chandler, has
- 1:41:29been very sound and very short.
- 1:41:32The official scorers are Roscoe McGard of the New York Times, Milton Gross of the New
- 1:41:38York Post, and Lou Ness of the Brooklyn Eagles.
- 1:41:44Erskine has been officially announced and is out on the mound.
- 1:41:48Warming up his right arm, prior to taking over, E-R-S-K-I-N-E.
- 1:41:54And now Erskine, he'll be pitching to Rizzuto, who's had a perfectly grand series, but kept
- 1:42:00a splendid year all season long in the American League.
- 1:42:04A little short stop, he's only been up officially once so far this afternoon.
- 1:42:10That was a fly ball to set a field.
- 1:42:11He walked to begin the ball game, which was as pivotal a play as you can get.
- 1:42:17Then he got this sacrifice in the second inning when he was bunting, presumably for a base
- 1:42:21hit but still moved a man over.
- 1:42:23So therefore he was officially scored as a sacrificer.
- 1:42:27He has three hits for 16 official at bats.
- 1:42:30He's a tough target, he has good eyes, very quick with his wrists, and he is small, just
- 1:42:37a little bit over five feet.
- 1:42:39In fact, when you see him in street clothes walking around with these athletes, you figure,
- 1:42:45well, see, that must be the bat boy.
- 1:42:50Then Rizzuto, who can play this game with just as big fellows as they come.
- 1:42:55Erskine makes his first pitch of fastball in under the hands of all one.
- 1:42:58He said that Erskine was the smallest right-hander.
- 1:43:02Well, of course, he's a pretty good-sized fellow compared to Rizzuto, pretty small as
- 1:43:06pitches usually go.
- 1:43:07Delivers fastball inside, and Rizzuto, who had stood up to it, apparently had his mind
- 1:43:12set for a curve or something, had suddenly backtracked there at the last split second.
- 1:43:17Two and all, Hatfield shaded toward left.
- 1:43:21Third baseman Jorgensen is off the back, suspicious of a bat.
- 1:43:24Hodges is a couple of steps up at first.
- 1:43:26Robinson up at second.
- 1:43:28Fastball in under the hands for ball three.
- 1:43:30So Rizzuto is in the catbird seat now as far as the count is concerned.
- 1:43:34Three and all.
- 1:43:37The Yankees out in front, seven to one.
- 1:43:43Rizzuto, who started in two and two-thirds innings, walked six men.
- 1:43:47Didn't take many hits to capitalize, and a bushel basket full of runs.
- 1:43:54Throw, missing for ball four.
- 1:43:57So Erskine gives up the walk.
- 1:43:58This is the seventh Yankee to get a free ticket.
- 1:44:03Rizzuto for the second time is walked, and he's at first, and here is Tommy Henrik.
- 1:44:08Infield up halfway, Henrik runs up his own with bunt and takes, and it's a called strike.
- 1:44:12Goes that big right hand, even bigger, Carroll Hubbard.
- 1:44:16Hubbard back of the plate, ridden at first base at second pass, Jorla at third in the
- 1:44:23foul corner, Bar in left, and Hurley in right.
- 1:44:27Erskine in position, checks first.
- 1:44:28There goes Rizzuto.
- 1:44:29There's a curve ball, chopped into right field, a hit-and-run play.
- 1:44:31Rizzuto wheels right around, second comes on into third.
- 1:44:34Brackley wheels, throws into second base, a shortstop race, and it's a hit-and-run single
- 1:44:38into left field for Henrik.
- 1:44:40So Erskine has no sooner come on, and he's drawn a couple of tortors, a base on balls
- 1:44:44and a single.
- 1:44:46And Yogi Barrett, who is 0 for 3 today, in a crouch, swings and drops the ball foul into
- 1:44:53The right field corner.
- 1:44:55He really swings that wood.
- 1:44:56When he first came up to the Yankees, they didn't know where in the world they were going
- 1:44:59to play him.
- 1:45:00Whether they were going to catch it, play him in the outfield or just what.
- 1:45:03But they knew they were going to play him, or as Bucky Harris said a couple of years
- 1:45:06ago, anybody who can swing that bat's going to be out there playing.
- 1:45:11Swing it the way he swings it, and he swings it.
- 1:45:14Infield is up, hoping for a play at the plate.
- 1:45:16The Yankees leading 7-1 and pressing forward here in the sixth inning.
- 1:45:20Nobody out, men at first and third.
- 1:45:21There's a fly ball into left field.
- 1:45:24Brackley is going back underneath it.
- 1:45:25Rizzuto tags to third.
- 1:45:26There's the catch and deep left.
- 1:45:27The throw goes to second, conceding the run and holding Henrik to run it first to first
- 1:45:31base.
- 1:45:32So, four New York now, 8-1, and Berra bats in the run with a long fly ball to left field.
- 1:45:41The Yankees have now scored in five of the sixth innings in which they have come up to
- 1:45:45The plate.
- 1:45:47And Big DiMaggio gets a big hand.
- 1:45:50Joe Fanle hit one.
- 1:45:52I know he must feel emergently better.
- 1:45:54He hit that home run in the left field corner in the fourth inning.
- 1:45:59His second series hit and his first real solid hit.
- 1:46:02The other was a squibbit up toward third.
- 1:46:04At field toward left.
- 1:46:06Joe swings as a high pop fly on the short right.
- 1:46:08Second baseman Robinson is out.
- 1:46:10Under it, under it, and takes it.
- 1:46:13Henrik holding on it first.
- 1:46:14Two men are gone.
- 1:46:17And Tommy Brown who continues to play great ball in the World Series.
- 1:46:20Let him get in the series.
- 1:46:22And he almost takes over the show.
- 1:46:26Henrik at first, ready to set sail.
- 1:46:30Vicki coaching at first base.
- 1:46:31Frankie Crisetti at third.
- 1:46:33In field is now all in shadow.
- 1:46:34So is left field.
- 1:46:36Center field and right field still have sun.
- 1:46:40Erskine delivers.
- 1:46:41Terps swung on.
- 1:46:42Drilled in the right field.
- 1:46:43It is fair by about a yard in the corner.
- 1:46:46And here is Henrik wheeling in the third.
- 1:46:47The ball gets away from Ormanski.
- 1:46:48Henrik is being waved on in by Crisetti.
- 1:46:50The throw is being relayed by Robinson.
- 1:46:52Henrik comes on to score.
- 1:46:53And two-third goes down.
- 1:46:54The ball gets away from Campanella.
- 1:46:56And here is Brown coming on in to score.
- 1:46:59Standing up at the plate.
- 1:47:00Throw that will probably be scored as a triple and an error.
- 1:47:05The high bouncing throw from right field to Ormanski got off the leaping form of the catcher
- 1:47:10Campanella and went back to the stands.
- 1:47:12It could be scored as a double as the throw in and as an error or a triple and an error.
- 1:47:17However, it's a run batted in by Brown down into the right field corner.
- 1:47:22Gives him another one.
- 1:47:23The Yankees get two more runs over to go out and clutch ten to one.
- 1:47:26And Clyde Souffport begins that slow death march out to the mound.
- 1:47:30He is the fellow that takes the news after the producer manages the shot.
- 1:47:35That is scored as a three-bagger.
- 1:47:37And the error is being charged against second baseman Robinson on his relay.
- 1:47:43Told you that Robinson relayed the throw and I think a moment later I hastily said that
- 1:47:47The right fielder's throw bounced high over the catcher.
- 1:47:51It was Robinson's relay and Robinson is charged with the error.
- 1:47:55That is a triple for Brown.
- 1:47:56That's all for Erskine.
- 1:47:57He's out of there and here's Hatton coming on for the second straight day.
- 1:48:00A triple for Brown.
- 1:48:01That's the second time he's tripled.
- 1:48:03Well, I guess Hatton knows Erskine field because Brown tripled off Hatton yesterday.
- 1:48:08Brown a three-bagger on the right field corner and never stops running on the concomitant
- 1:48:12error which is charged against the second baseman Brown score.
- 1:48:21The announcement has now been made and Hatton is officially the pitcher and Erskine vacates
- 1:48:25The mound for him.
- 1:48:29Tommy Henrik is scored officially as coming all the way in of course on the three-bagger.
- 1:48:39Now leaving the Brooklyn dugout going down to the bullpen is Erskine Polika.
- 1:48:44Hatton takes over on the mound.
- 1:48:45It is 10 to 1 in favor of the rampaging Yankees and Casey Stengel himself seems to be visibly
- 1:48:52relaxed down there in the Yankee dugout.
- 1:48:54I don't think he's particularly concerned now about events.
- 1:48:58He's got a lot of pitches.
- 1:48:59Firstly, one guy named Joe plays down the bullpen.
- 1:49:02Of course, he's got one that's going very well on the mound and the percentages are
- 1:49:07just packing up higher and higher with the American League champions.
- 1:49:12They're leading now by an aggregate score of 10 to 1.
- 1:49:19Now Hatton's about ready to go and the batter that he will pitch to is the left-hand hitting
- 1:49:23left fielder Gene Woodling who's had a perfect afternoon and with this huge margin Stengel
- 1:49:28is not making the reverse by pinch hitting with the right-hand batter.
- 1:49:34Hatton throws fastball in there for a called strike.
- 1:49:37So running on, the first nine runs for the Yankees ought to be scored as earned.
- 1:49:42Well, the tenth one is to be scored as earned and that remains to be seen.
- 1:49:45The error was not of the outmaking variety.
- 1:49:48Pitch curveball low, one and one.
- 1:49:53Woodling who walked in the first inning, singled in the center in the third and doubled in
- 1:49:57The fifth.
- 1:49:58He scored two runs.
- 1:50:04Three hits for eight official at bats.
- 1:50:06Ball is in under the hands and it is two and one.
- 1:50:08Two balls, one strike.
- 1:50:13The Yankees of course leading in game three to one and leading in runs and this one with
- 1:50:17The Dodgers, Dormey, ten runs to one.
- 1:50:20Two on pitch, swung on, there's a drive into left center field.
- 1:50:24She's in there for a base hit and passed correctly, at least for a double.
- 1:50:28Here's Woodling coming in to second standing up to continue his bid for a perfect afternoon
- 1:50:32and this makes all ten of the Yankee runs earned.
- 1:50:35So a solid line drive double for Woodling which gives him three for three.
- 1:50:42His third hit is hit charged to Hatton of course.
- 1:50:47The Yankee runs the first five charged to start a bonny, the next two to batter, the
- 1:50:52next three to Erskine.
- 1:50:53Hatton of course is completely responsible for Woodling in second base.
- 1:51:02Joseph Mapes who is 0 for 1 officially, 1 for 8 in the series left hand batter, 1 for
- 1:51:088 in the series left hand batter, takes a high inside curve for ball one.
- 1:51:13His base hit yesterday was a very big one for New York with the ball game standing even.
- 1:51:19He sliced a double in the left field corner, knocked in the first two runs and the Yankees
- 1:51:22were never headed.
- 1:51:23Fung on a high fly ball into short left, Brackley comes in, the left field is under it, backs
- 1:51:28up, makes the cut.
- 1:51:31So that closes matters in the top of the sixth inning and the Yankees pick up three more
- 1:51:37runs, three more hits.
- 1:51:41There's one booked for Marrow and at the end of five and a half innings the score stands
- 1:51:46now in New York 10 and Brooklyn 1.
- 1:51:48Lou Boudreaux of the Cleveland Indians says that he'd rather go without his morning coffee
- 1:51:53than passive shaving.
- 1:51:55Yes, Lou uses Gillette's super speed razor and here he is to tell you why.
- 1:52:00Well, fans, that's because it makes shaving something to look forward to.
- 1:52:03And what way, Lou?
- 1:52:04Well, red shaving is no longer a chore.
- 1:52:07It picks me up, gives me a feeling of well-being.
- 1:52:10In fact, it's as important as breakfast to me.
- 1:52:13Well, you don't mean that you'd rather shave than eat, do you?
- 1:52:15Oh, no, but I just don't feel right until I do shave.
- 1:52:19Fans, with the Gillette super speed razor, shaving is a refreshing experience and far
- 1:52:24more convenient than ever.
- 1:52:26Look for Gillette's special World Series set, get this fine one piece razor and a 10 blade
- 1:52:32Gillette dispenser in a handsome styrene travel cape, a big $1.75 value for only a dollar.
- 1:52:43Last half of the sixth inning, the Yankees 10, the Dodgers 1.
- 1:52:47Well, to be perfectly factual about it, if Brooklyn can pull this one out today, this
- 1:52:52is going to be an explosion that will be topped pretty much only by several of atomic origin.
- 1:52:59Hello, this is an unpredictable ball club, a dead game ball club, and it's a ball park
- 1:53:07that is fated for the unexpected.
- 1:53:11That's almost taken for granted around the Diggins and Pat Bush.
- 1:53:14So let's hold on and see.
- 1:53:16Duke Snyder, first half last of the sixth.
- 1:53:18Right-hander rashie pitches and Snyder swings.
- 1:53:20That's the ball out deep into let's set a field and it's in there for a base hit, comes
- 1:53:24off the wall, Snyder's coming in the second base, Woodling throws in and it's a double
- 1:53:28for Snyder.
- 1:53:29The ball gets through from Coleman, but rashie backs up the play and Snyder is content to
- 1:53:34stay a second, lashing out to the double.
- 1:53:37So the Duke movement is swinging away.
- 1:53:40Let's double, let's see alleyway and let's set a field.
- 1:53:44This gives him his second World Series hit.
- 1:53:47This is hit number six this afternoon off rashie.
- 1:53:50The Dodgers trailing by nine runs have only two alternatives as they say in baseball.
- 1:53:58You swing or you take.
- 1:54:00In other words, you swing to hit and you take to try and get a base on ball.
- 1:54:0410 to one New York, rashie is the uniformed straight now becoming sweat stained as he's
- 1:54:12been twirling steadily along.
- 1:54:14The right hander Robinson who is one for two today, backs out as rashie gets all set time
- 1:54:21is called.
- 1:54:24Robinson has three hits for 14 at bats.
- 1:54:29At field toward left, Jack runs up his own with Brunson takes a pitch inside for ball
- 1:54:33one.
- 1:54:34Snyder second and of course Ruth Line run the bases conservatively.
- 1:54:38Manager Stengel steps to the front of the dugout and says look out for the bun again.
- 1:54:41The pitch fastball that is outside just by a tick for ball two.
- 1:54:48Rashie trying to keep control of the situation with a nine run lead delivers in there for
- 1:54:52a call strike.
- 1:54:53He hasn't been fooling with his curve so much.
- 1:54:55He's been primarily a fastball pitcher this afternoon.
- 1:54:58Two holes one strike.
- 1:55:03Robinson swinging.
- 1:55:04Two and two.
- 1:55:15Snyder not only came up with a base hit for himself in the sixth inning which will help
- 1:55:19his feelings emergibly but by getting a base hit he saw to it that he didn't strike out.
- 1:55:26He's only one strike out away from tying the record for a batter striking out the most
- 1:55:31in the five game series.
- 1:55:32Roger Hornsby struck out eight times in 1829.
- 1:55:36Robinson takes a curve outside for ball three.
- 1:55:38Three balls two strikes.
- 1:55:40Snyder struck out seven times in the series.
- 1:55:46Three and two.
- 1:55:47That's the ball and strike count.
- 1:55:49One out last for the sixth.
- 1:55:53Rashie pitching with a little bit more deliberation now.
- 1:55:56He's probably beginning to get tired.
- 1:56:00Come back after two days rest.
- 1:56:04Big right hander throws outside for ball four.
- 1:56:06Ann Robinson achieves his objective getting on base based on balls which is the first
- 1:56:11given up by Rashie.
- 1:56:13Hand pitching coach Jim Turner steps to the front of the Yankee dugout and motions to
- 1:56:17The Yankee bullpen with his left hand.
- 1:56:19What do you think that means?
- 1:56:21Only one thing Joe Page.
- 1:56:24There's Big Page starting to warm up and he knows how to warm up.
- 1:56:29He doesn't leave any of his pitches out on the bullpen.
- 1:56:33Well the Yankees want to end it.
- 1:56:38There it is.
- 1:56:39Page throwing in the bullpen.
- 1:56:40The Yankees leading 10 to 1.
- 1:56:42The matter is Gene Hermanski at the plate.
- 1:56:45Swings and falls the ball out of play back on the screen.
- 1:56:49Nothing in one.
- 1:56:53Big Rashie takes the sign from Stocky Beller.
- 1:56:55Pitches.
- 1:56:56There's a bounding ball hit through between first and second.
- 1:56:58The Yankees are in the right field.
- 1:56:59Matter being waved by Stack around third.
- 1:57:00It comes on in the score and when the ball is bobbled in right field by Mates Robinson
- 1:57:04who has stopped at second picks up both to third.
- 1:57:07Hermanski holds his first.
- 1:57:10That makes it a 10 to 2 ball game and an hour is charged on Mates in right field.
- 1:57:15You can't bobble at balls for so much as a swift second on Robinson.
- 1:57:18His reflexes are amazingly rapid.
- 1:57:22So Hermanski singles in to right.
- 1:57:25Dodges, if nothing else, are going to worry the Yankees and Stengel as much as they can.
- 1:57:29They got Stengel up in front of the dugout howling now.
- 1:57:33Robinson stops at second, moves over to third on right field.
- 1:57:37The Mates is missed too.
- 1:57:38Snyder scores of course.
- 1:57:39Up now is Gil Hodges who singled his last 50.
- 1:57:49He's 1 to 2 today.
- 1:57:50He has 3 hits to 14.
- 1:57:51Out to Alonso on left.
- 1:57:5210 to 2 ball game for New York.
- 1:57:55Nobody else.
- 1:57:56Slow curve is over for a called strike.
- 1:58:00And Page is warming up from the Yankee both end.
- 1:58:04You watch him warm up.
- 1:58:05You would think he was being very lackadaisical, very unconcerned.
- 1:58:10It's a part of his ability to do so much work.
- 1:58:15He just gets sort of loose down there and he gets right on the edge of where he's ready
- 1:58:19to throw hard and then he takes them out.
- 1:58:24Robinson off there in.
- 1:58:26Manskill first.
- 1:58:27The Yankee in field is up only one or two steps in double play depth.
- 1:58:29The outfield toward left.
- 1:58:31Rash your pitcher.
- 1:58:32The curve is one on the miss.
- 1:58:33Strike two.
- 1:58:34He's spun a big slow breaking curve over.
- 1:58:38Broke it off very nicely.
- 1:58:40Nothing in two.
- 1:58:43The Yankees 10 to the Dodgers 2.
- 1:58:45There's a lot left to happen in this ball game.
- 1:58:51You let folks might happen to send it to you wherever you are, wherever you happen to be.
- 1:59:03Pudge is leaning in slightly.
- 1:59:04Rash your pitchers.
- 1:59:05Curve low outside.
- 1:59:06The borough goes down nicely to his right to hold the ball up.
- 1:59:09One ball, two strikes.
- 1:59:15One and two.
- 1:59:17Before the ball game, we had a talk with Billy Southwest and we're very happy to tell you
- 1:59:27that he feels fine.
- 1:59:29He looks fine.
- 1:59:30He's all set to resume the managership of the Boston Braves next year.
- 1:59:35He was pretty sick.
- 1:59:37He's gone as far as he could go.
- 1:59:41The one and two pitch, curve's one on the miss, strike three on Hodges.
- 1:59:45He's stuck out on big breaking stuff.
- 1:59:47This is the sixth strikeout for Rashie.
- 1:59:53Rashie's struck out in eight innings, four men in game two.
- 2:00:03Rashie apparently found that his hands were perspiring a great deal and Stengel held up
- 2:00:07a towel over him to dug out.
- 2:00:10But Rashie said, well, I don't want it.
- 2:00:11So he's gone back to the mound.
- 2:00:13Henry could come over from first base to visit with him, goes back to first.
- 2:00:18Manski first base, Robinson at third.
- 2:00:20Those are the two runners.
- 2:00:21One man out.
- 2:00:22The batter is Marvin Radcliffe, who was 0-2 both times he's been up.
- 2:00:24He's struck out.
- 2:00:25He's 0-4 on the series.
- 2:00:26Works well up on the hand a little bit.
- 2:00:28Small left hand hitter.
- 2:00:29Swings on a curve, hits it down to first base.
- 2:00:32Henry got and drops the runners.
- 2:00:34Let's see, Russ Radcliffe back, steps on first for the out.
- 2:00:37On Radcliffe, he holds Radcliffe at third base.
- 2:00:39Manski moves on to second.
- 2:00:41Jack, of course, in other words, had the one run meant anything, I think he'd have tried.
- 2:00:46But of course, when you're eight runs behind, you don't risk it out.
- 2:00:50So Henry just waved his arm menacingly once and Robinson obligingly dotted back into third
- 2:00:55base.
- 2:00:56Manski moved over to second.
- 2:00:57So Radcliffe is just out routine to the first baseman.
- 2:01:01On the system.
- 2:01:02That's the second out.
- 2:01:04Roy Campanella, who has had a fine series, who kept a very solid season.
- 2:01:13Campanella, who is one for two, four hits for 14 at bats.
- 2:01:19Right hand batter.
- 2:01:20First base is open.
- 2:01:21There's two out there pitching to him.
- 2:01:24That eight run advantage lets you do it the way you want to do it.
- 2:01:27Yankees leading 10 to two.
- 2:01:30Last is the sixth.
- 2:01:33Rashie takes a long time getting the sign.
- 2:01:35Pumps watch pitches a curve ball in there.
- 2:01:37Ball strike.
- 2:01:40Rashie settle down, get the last two outs.
- 2:01:42So Paige is promptly sloughed off.
- 2:01:46Throw, curve ball low outside.
- 2:01:48Ball one.
- 2:01:49On ball one, strike.
- 2:01:51Rashie apparently feeling that being tired, that he's losing something on his fast ball
- 2:01:55is going to his curve more and more.
- 2:01:57In case you're tangled, moving around, hollering at Rashie and Vic nods, uh-huh.
- 2:02:08The pitchers, the fast ball in there for a call second strike.
- 2:02:11One and two.
- 2:02:12One ball, two strikes.
- 2:02:18Simonson at third.
- 2:02:19A long run down just then.
- 2:02:21Just gets second.
- 2:02:29I feel very much around toward left.
- 2:02:32Campanella, stocky, strong, open stance.
- 2:02:36Takes an outside curve.
- 2:02:37It's down into the dirt.
- 2:02:38Gets away from Barrow who picks up the ball.
- 2:02:40Throws down to third base.
- 2:02:41Robertson just this slide back.
- 2:02:42It was a bang, bang play.
- 2:02:45That ball hit into the dirt and spun out of Barrow's mid.
- 2:02:48It looked as though it might be getting ready to be a wild pitch when Barrow promptly recovered
- 2:02:52it on the first bounce.
- 2:02:53And Robertson, who immediately started toward home plate when he saw the ball hit the ground,
- 2:02:57was hard pressed to get back as Barrow recovered.
- 2:02:59He lost his mitt in the process, but he didn't bother to pick it up.
- 2:03:02He just picked up the ball and fired it down to third.
- 2:03:08Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:03:12Page resumes throwing once in a while leisurely in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:03:16The two-two pitch is a curve all over too hard.
- 2:03:19So it is three and two.
- 2:03:22Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:03:27Last of the six spinning.
- 2:03:36Ball game is now two hours old.
- 2:03:38Rashi pumps.
- 2:03:39Delivers three-two, a curve outside the ball.
- 2:03:41Four and Campanella walks.
- 2:03:42It's low for the bases.
- 2:03:46And Billy Cox is coming up as a pinch hitter.
- 2:03:49Billy Cox who pinch hit a dribble single.
- 2:03:51I thought of that in front of the plate yesterday.
- 2:03:55Cox taking over for Joe Hatton.
- 2:03:56Can you hear him please?
- 2:03:59Paul Brooklyn, number three.
- 2:04:02Billy Cox batting for Joe Hatton.
- 2:04:09So Cox coming up to hit.
- 2:04:11The bases are FOB, they are full of Brooklands.
- 2:04:13As the saying goes around the neck of the woods.
- 2:04:16Three-man on, two out.
- 2:04:20The Yankees ten, the Dodgers two.
- 2:04:26Felika, the only pitcher throwing in the Brooklyn bullpen.
- 2:04:32So we'll see him in the seventh inning.
- 2:04:37Rashi now trying to settle matters in the six pitches.
- 2:04:41Misses with the fastball in under the hands.
- 2:04:42Four ball one.
- 2:04:43One ball, no strike.
- 2:04:44Big right hander has a very easy move.
- 2:04:49He's centering his attentions on the hitter.
- 2:04:52Pinch hitter Billy Cox, slight right hand batter.
- 2:04:55Swings and misses.
- 2:04:56That is a sharp curve ball.
- 2:04:58One and one.
- 2:04:59One ball, one strike.
- 2:05:02Cox had the regular job at third until he sprained an ankle in the morning game Labor
- 2:05:06Day.
- 2:05:07And didn't play at all until yesterday.
- 2:05:12He got in the ball game and finished it.
- 2:05:14Twenty-one pitch, swung on, there's a foul ball.
- 2:05:17Back out of play.
- 2:05:18One and two.
- 2:05:19The ball takes a new ball.
- 2:05:22Ask for time, walks out to the mound.
- 2:05:26One and two, ball and strike count.
- 2:05:33Rashi who lost that brilliant ball game to Pichiro in two at the stadium.
- 2:05:40Now trying to hang on.
- 2:05:44Page and Silberon have stopped their work down the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:05:48They're looking on, along with everybody else.
- 2:05:50The pitch here is a curve behind side of the ball too.
- 2:05:53Two and two.
- 2:05:59Cox swings from the end.
- 2:06:05Rashi in no hurry.
- 2:06:12He's got a long weather ahead of him.
- 2:06:18The two-two pitch.
- 2:06:19Swung on to this, fastball high, strike three.
- 2:06:20He couldn't lay off it.
- 2:06:21High inside fastball.
- 2:06:22It is one of the pitch's best friends at seven strikeouts for Rashi.
- 2:06:30So it is one run in the last half of the sixth inning.
- 2:06:35Two hits to the three men left.
- 2:06:36So the totals at the end of the sixth inning for the Yankees, ten runs are all earned.
- 2:06:43Ten hits and one error.
- 2:06:44For the Dodgers, two runs earned, seven hits and two errors.
- 2:06:49Now the Dodgers had an agreement that there was total cold water.
- 2:06:54Flakers being announced with the pitcher to come on in the seventh inning.
- 2:06:57And the Yankees at the end of sixth are out in front, ten to two.
- 2:07:01And on our broadcast with the best wishes of the Gillette's Safe to Raise the Folks,
- 2:07:05we'll pause ten seconds for our state's identification.
- 2:07:08This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 2:07:12Watch here the World Series exclusively over WOR and see it on WOR-TV Channel 9, WOR and
- 2:07:20WOR-FM, New York.
- 2:07:22I want to check back on the Yankee totals.
- 2:07:25We just gave you ten hits for them.
- 2:07:28The hits should be nine.
- 2:07:30Three hits off Bonnie, three hits off Madda, two off Erskine and one off Hatton.
- 2:07:37So Yankees ten, nine, one.
- 2:07:40The Dodgers two, seven, two.
- 2:07:44Now Pulika is out there on the troubled scene, ready to pitch to second baseman Coleman as
- 2:07:50we move into the seventh inning.
- 2:07:52Pulika, a young right-hander, used primarily as a relief pitcher all year for the Dodgers,
- 2:08:00not used very much in the late stages.
- 2:08:02Coleman, who's had a tremendous series for a rookie, one for three today, right-hand
- 2:08:06batter, swings and slaps different foul on the upper first base stand.
- 2:08:09Take one as we move along into the seventh inning with the Yankees leading ten to two.
- 2:08:15The shadow of the stands has now almost completely developed the playing area.
- 2:08:19Right center field in its depth out by the wall still has a little bit of sun.
- 2:08:24Fast ball swung on and missed at the plate, strike two.
- 2:08:26No balls, two strikes.
- 2:08:28Pulika, six foot, graceful working right-hander, misses with a fast ball low inside, one and
- 2:08:34two.
- 2:08:35One ball, two strikes.
- 2:08:38Pulika kicked on that decision.
- 2:08:42The one and two pitch swung on, hit down straight to second baseman Robinson, who's up with
- 2:08:46it on a big hop, throws over the first to Hodges, and Coleman is retired.
- 2:08:50One up and one away.
- 2:08:54And Pichirashi gets a growing round of applause as he comes closer and closer to home plate.
- 2:09:08He's been quite a pitcher so far in this series.
- 2:09:11When you lose one to nothing, that's just as close as you can cut it and be a losing
- 2:09:16pitcher.
- 2:09:17That was his fate against Pichirashi in the second game.
- 2:09:20Pulika's fast ball high inside to Rashi, who's a right-hand batter, who has one hit,
- 2:09:24knocked in a run with it back in the third inning.
- 2:09:29Big steps up, swings, misses.
- 2:09:32One and one, pitch is right down in the slot.
- 2:09:35One out, nobody on in the seventh.
- 2:09:39Throw, fast ball low inside, two and one.
- 2:09:49Campanella pumps the sign.
- 2:09:51I feel, step toward left.
- 2:09:53Rashi is a good hitting pitcher.
- 2:09:55Takes a fast ball over for a false second strike, and it's two and two.
- 2:09:59It's a very interesting and a somber study to watch some of the faces of the national
- 2:10:04leagueers that sit back at the Brooklyn bench over there in the New York giant box, Carl
- 2:10:11Hubble, Eddie Brannock, the road secretary, Mel Ott sitting shoulder to shoulder with
- 2:10:17Leo DeRoscia.
- 2:10:18Two, two, pitch, swung on, hit right back to the mound on a big bounder.
- 2:10:23Pulika throws over to first, and Rashi is out, but Pulika made him run all the way down
- 2:10:29The line.
- 2:10:30He wouldn't throw over there until after he had run very close to first base.
- 2:10:33So, two men are gone, top of the seventh.
- 2:10:37And the scudo, Phil Rizzuto, who's had a great series.
- 2:10:40He's done everything that you could ask of him.
- 2:10:43Pitch, fast ball in there.
- 2:10:46I think in one.
- 2:10:47Pulika so far just trying to get the ball over, I think.
- 2:10:50He hasn't gone very much.
- 2:10:51He can throw almost anything.
- 2:10:55Deals, there is a breaking ball that's fouled off.
- 2:11:00It might have been a knuckle up, or seemed to be giving it snake-like waivers that came
- 2:11:05up.
- 2:11:06Nothing in two.
- 2:11:07That field's what left.
- 2:11:17Infield is up because of this fellow's speed.
- 2:11:19Curves, one and missed, strike three.
- 2:11:21So Pulika strikes him out.
- 2:11:23That's the first curve ball to use.
- 2:11:26Coming across then for the Yankees, this is the first time in the ballgame that they did
- 2:11:31not get a man on base in some fashion in the seven innings in which they batted.
- 2:11:36And the score remains, the end of six and a half innings, the Yankees ten and the Dodgers
- 2:11:41two.
- 2:11:45Last half of the seventh inning, and it's the top of the order, Reese, Jorgensen, and
- 2:11:49Snyder.
- 2:11:51And despite the adverse fortunes to his ball club, Pee-wee Reese has continued to be a
- 2:11:57standout.
- 2:11:58He has had singles his last two trips, drove in Brooklyn's first run, which guaranteed
- 2:12:03that if nothing else, the complete ignominy of a shutout would be averted.
- 2:12:07Pee-wee has had six hits so far.
- 2:12:10As she works, there's a line drive right into left field, right out to Woodley.
- 2:12:15Straight to the left field, who holds it?
- 2:12:20And gone, last of the seven, and Johnny Jorgensen, who's off to three, moves up to the plate.
- 2:12:27Duke Snyder moves out on deck.
- 2:12:30The Spada, as they call him, a ten-hitter with an open stance at 150 pounds.
- 2:12:37Big rashie, pumps once, delivers, fastball on the outside, ball one.
- 2:12:43He just pitching to spots.
- 2:12:48First of his shirt now, staying with perspiration.
- 2:12:53He deals outside again for ball two.
- 2:12:57Two and all.
- 2:13:03The Dodgers in a spot like this have no alternatives left but to take the count right on down,
- 2:13:08trying to get ball four, because, you know, there's no defense against ball four, and
- 2:13:12you've got to get a lot of men on when you're behind eight runs.
- 2:13:16Rashi misses with a fastball at the knees, low inside for ball three.
- 2:13:19Three and all.
- 2:13:22One away, nobody on.
- 2:13:29Barrett sets his mid as a target, three nothing pitch, inside for ball four.
- 2:13:33The Jorgensen throws his stick away, sends Strahl, the book, and that boy retrieves it.
- 2:13:40This is walk number three for Rashi and Duke Snatter, who doubled last time up in sixth
- 2:13:48inning.
- 2:13:49Later was turned into Brookton's second tally.
- 2:13:54Snatter won for three today.
- 2:13:57He has two hits for 19 at bats.
- 2:13:59Curve, swung on, hit down to second base for Coleman, gets to him, on the right center
- 2:14:05field.
- 2:14:06Jorgensen runs second, goes in the third, and Snatter holds it first.
- 2:14:09Coleman going to his right over toward second base, that's a tough play, as the meat hand
- 2:14:13side to the second baseman can't quite come up with a ball, although he partially flags
- 2:14:17it and it's officially scored as a base hit.
- 2:14:20So, Snatter comes up to the wall.
- 2:14:23That has to be a base hit.
- 2:14:24That could have only been a great play had Coleman come up with it.
- 2:14:28So that is a single in the center field for Snatter sending Jorgensen to third.
- 2:14:33Hit number eight for the Dodgers, and the batter is Robinson, who has one hit for two
- 2:14:39today.
- 2:14:40Running at first and third, Rashi's fastball is lost, side ball won, and Joe Page is up
- 2:14:48again.
- 2:14:49He's, first of all, as they used to say, is sure his death and taxes, well, you might
- 2:14:54say as far as the Yanks are concerned, is sure his death, taxes, and pay.
- 2:14:58Robinson takes a call strike, fastball over, one ball, one strike.
- 2:15:03One is at first and third, one out last to the seventh.
- 2:15:09Appear around to what left.
- 2:15:14Throw, swung on, hit the ball outside first base, it's one and two.
- 2:15:22One ball, two strikes.
- 2:15:24I guess at a time like this that Casey Stengel remains a little itchy because he's seen big
- 2:15:31leads evaporate.
- 2:15:33Everybody of course knows that at one time in the World Series, the Athletics came up
- 2:15:38with 10 runs in one inning.
- 2:15:41That's what makes baseball the interesting, charming, irresistible sport that it is, is
- 2:15:47its consistent uncertainty, complete unpredictability.
- 2:15:53So you play them out to the end, see what happens.
- 2:15:57That's what we're doing.
- 2:16:00The one and two pitch, swung on, there's a high fireball into left field, Woodlings on
- 2:16:04rich, an easy chance for him.
- 2:16:05Jorgensen tags that third, there's the catch.
- 2:16:07Jorgensen comes on in and scores and Henrik, the first baseman, no, it's Brown, cut the
- 2:16:13ball off in front of Henrik and this hole started at first base.
- 2:16:17So it's a 10 to three ball game.
- 2:16:20Fly ball to left field, high, deep enough, but not too well tagged, and Jorgensen scores.
- 2:16:2910 to three, Stengel of course going just as far as he can with Rashid, he wants him
- 2:16:36to finish.
- 2:16:38Gene Harmanski who's singled in the run in the sixth inning for the Dodger, their second
- 2:16:43tally comes up.
- 2:16:46The Yankees are now moving all so close, so close to the big stake.
- 2:16:53The Pernod races were bitter, right down to the last day.
- 2:16:57Now the Yankees trying to decide the series.
- 2:17:00Harmanski takes a curve that hangs outside to him, right hand pitcher working the left
- 2:17:03hand batter.
- 2:17:04Gene asked to have the ball examined, so Fred Umparkel Hubbard audited, brought to him for
- 2:17:09an inspection, and he takes it out.
- 2:17:14Apparently it had some dirt spot on it.
- 2:17:21If there is anything that has changed the play of baseball, it has been the baseball
- 2:17:25itself.
- 2:17:27And not only the construction of the baseball, but the fact that a new ball is constantly
- 2:17:32being used.
- 2:17:33In the old days, they'd just play with the ball all afternoon.
- 2:17:38Harmanski takes a pitch high, ball two.
- 2:17:42Back before 1920 for example, pitch could do anything with the ball he wanted to.
- 2:17:46Some of them did some fearful things.
- 2:17:53Today a pitcher has to make every pitch good.
- 2:17:56Two nothing pitch, low outside, ball three.
- 2:17:59Two balls, no strikes, and there's Stengel just mucking around.
- 2:18:04It's a 10 to 3 Yankee lead, but Mr. Stengel is not comfortable.
- 2:18:10He's been in this game a long time, and in this ball pocket book him a long time.
- 2:18:14Rashe seems to be quite tired.
- 2:18:17He's forcing himself.
- 2:18:18For a minute he gets up to start throwing in the book on both ends.
- 2:18:24Pitch low, throw ball four, and Harmanski draws the base on balls.
- 2:18:28Two out, he takes first to start and moves over to second base.
- 2:18:33Walk number four off Rashe, and all four walks have come in the last two innings, sixth and
- 2:18:38seventh.
- 2:18:39Well, there's Stengel standing in front of the Yankee bench.
- 2:18:43Boy, what a year he's had, huh?
- 2:18:47What a year.
- 2:18:53Never got very far managing in the major leagues at Brooklyn, Boston.
- 2:18:57Never had very good ballplay.
- 2:19:01He was given some ballplayers this year, and he's really come through.
- 2:19:05Now the matter is Hodges, 10-3, favorite New York.
- 2:19:09Rashe misses just outside, no more than the width of a Gillette blue blade, but that's
- 2:19:13wide enough, ball one.
- 2:19:17Hodges has one for three.
- 2:19:21Outfield, Ron, toward left, a 10-to-minute.
- 2:19:26Very tall, going down in the right-field corner for Brooklyn.
- 2:19:30Page has already warmed up.
- 2:19:31He's just watching for the Yankees.
- 2:19:33They're the fast ball over, one and one, one ball, one strike.
- 2:19:38Rashe is weary, but he wants to go.
- 2:19:48You have a feeling, however, the next thing that happens to him, he's out.
- 2:19:52One-one pitch, swung on, there's a high five ball deep in the left field, way back in the
- 2:19:56left field.
- 2:19:57It is in there for a home run, and it's a 10-to-6 ball game.
- 2:20:02Stengel going to the mound, and Rashe's coming out.
- 2:20:07Well, Rashe, there he goes, a big, swept-steam figure with his head down, walking into the
- 2:20:34Yankee bench, Stengel is out of the mound, holding the ball, talking to Bellarmine.
- 2:20:37Joe Page is coming on, and the Dodgers, who die hard, are still alive, and it's a 10-to-6
- 2:20:43ball game.
- 2:20:46There's Joe Page, the master release pitcher of his era.
- 2:20:54Page coming out to the mound.
- 2:20:58Big Hodges, it's a three-run home run.
- 2:21:05Stengel waiting on the mound to hand the ball to Page.
- 2:21:09Blackley is scheduled to hit first, but it will probably be a pinch hitter.
- 2:21:12Blackley's a left-hand batter, and Page is a left-hander.
- 2:21:16I see Laurie Ormahl going over to the Brooklyn batting cage.
- 2:21:24Apparently, he's going to get a stick and hit.
- 2:21:26Basically, I haven't picked up a bat as yet.
- 2:21:29Page is going to pitch to the end out.
- 2:21:34Well, while we have the opportunity, Page is taking over at the mound.
- 2:21:39It's a 10-to-6 game in favor of New York.
- 2:21:42We'll pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 2:21:45This is the neutral broadcasting system.
- 2:21:50Hear the World Series exclusively over WOR.
- 2:21:56See it on WOR-TV, Channel 9.
- 2:22:01So far, Manager Schotton has not picked up his pinch hitter as yet.
- 2:22:05Ralph Branca gets his glove, and the big pitcher who wears number 13 is going down to both
- 2:22:09and along with Bruce Edwards to throw with Paul Menna.
- 2:22:13It's a 10-to-6 ball game, and Louis Ormahl will be the pinch hitter.
- 2:22:17Well, Mal, you've been watching Ratchie all year.
- 2:22:20He got pretty tired, didn't he?
- 2:22:22It was obvious he was quite tired.
- 2:22:24He's the fellow that we wondered about at the very beginning of the game, the two-day
- 2:22:30rest proposition with him.
- 2:22:32Though he's a big fellow, and he is strong, yet he doesn't particularly care for the warm
- 2:22:36weather.
- 2:22:37He's always a better pitcher in cooler weather.
- 2:22:41And he gave it all he had up to that seventh inning.
- 2:22:46He was tiring in the sixth.
- 2:22:47Now, think Casey Stengel's idea there was to try and get as far as he could with him
- 2:22:53so that he would not have to work Joe Page any longer than he would have to, because
- 2:22:57Joe has worked quite a lot in the series.
- 2:23:01Well, so the Dodgers caught up with Ratchie, and he's gone.
- 2:23:06And now Louis Ormahl is coming up with the pinch hitter against Joe Page the last time
- 2:23:09they met.
- 2:23:10Ormahl hit him for a home run.
- 2:23:11So Page takes over.
- 2:23:12The Dodgers who were behind 10-1 now moved up to work 10-6.
- 2:23:17There's a pass ball right in that court called strike.
- 2:23:20And it's a big better than six-foot left-hander.
- 2:23:22Joe Page takes over.
- 2:23:24It's the third time that Page is relieved.
- 2:23:36Page relieved Tommy Byrne, you know.
- 2:23:38Did a tremendous job in game three.
- 2:23:42Winning pitchers.
- 2:23:45Ormahl swings at a high foul back of the Brooklyn bench, coming down in the spectators.
- 2:23:51Out of play.
- 2:23:52Ormahl's two strikes.
- 2:23:53Ormahl right-hand hitter.
- 2:23:54Tense deep, back in the box, overly close stance.
- 2:23:59Joe the clock is buzzing again.
- 2:24:04Page delivers.
- 2:24:07There's a swing of the best of strike three and he comes out on a place-to-fell over on
- 2:24:14three straight pitches.
- 2:24:15So that closes matters for the last half of the seventh.
- 2:24:17And in the last of the seventh inning for the Dodgers, four runs, an inning which was
- 2:24:21featured by Gil Hodges' home run with two on.
- 2:24:25Two hits.
- 2:24:27The other two men to get on were bases on balls.
- 2:24:29So at the end of seven to check totals, 10 runs, nine hits, one hour for New York.
- 2:24:36Six runs, nine hits, and two hours for Brooklyn.
- 2:24:41All runs in the ball game are earned.
- 2:24:45Ormahl who hits for left fielder Radcliffe has just been announced as going out into
- 2:24:49left field.
- 2:24:52Ball game, two and a half hours all.
- 2:24:55Ready to move now into the eighth inning.
- 2:24:58In case you're wondering what would happen should a ball game which started at two o'clock
- 2:25:03on Sunday here this late in the year in the fall, should it be an extremely long game
- 2:25:09and run into darkness?
- 2:25:10Would they call it?
- 2:25:12Well, Commissioner Chandler decided that if necessary because there are lights in both
- 2:25:18parts, the lights would be turned on.
- 2:25:20The game would go ahead.
- 2:25:22However, on Sunday they could only play until seven o'clock.
- 2:25:27They did have to turn the lights on.
- 2:25:29The most runs ever scored by both clubs in the total world series game, 22 in case you're
- 2:25:34wondering about that.
- 2:25:35They've been 16 so far in this one.
- 2:25:37They had divided with the Yankees 10 to Dodgers 6.
- 2:25:41Now we'll see what happens.
- 2:25:42The eighth inning.
- 2:25:43That is Tommy Henrik who has one hit today, single his last time up.
- 2:25:45Right end to Pelika delivers and Henrik swings and drills the ball to right center fielder
- 2:25:48Snatter going over and makes a fine catch on it.
- 2:25:51What a day he's had.
- 2:25:53He's still got the ball.
- 2:25:56That's the third fine catch for Snatter.
- 2:25:59Two of them off the magio as Mel Allen told you earlier in the ball game.
- 2:26:09Ball out steps in and takes a called strike.
- 2:26:29Nothing in one.
- 2:26:34There's a pitch high outside.
- 2:26:35Ball one.
- 2:26:36One ball, one strike.
- 2:26:37Yankees 10 to Dodgers 6.
- 2:26:38And the place is alive.
- 2:26:41Vibrant with the sole once again.
- 2:26:43Pitch is swung on.
- 2:26:44There's a high fly ball into deep right center fielder.
- 2:26:47Snatter back all against the concrete makes the catch.
- 2:26:51376 feet away.
- 2:26:54Throw to Lanagard.
- 2:26:59Two up, two out.
- 2:27:00Top of the eighth.
- 2:27:03And here is the magio.
- 2:27:06The jolted one in the fourth inning.
- 2:27:10The second series hit and his first solid win.
- 2:27:12A home run.
- 2:27:13Right hand batter as you know outfield deep around to the left.
- 2:27:17Fulika pitches a fast ball high inside.
- 2:27:19Ball one.
- 2:27:24The two Brooklyn pitchers in the bullpen, Branker and Minner continue working.
- 2:27:29The magio takes a fast ball over for a called strike from both the knees.
- 2:27:32For the Dodgers in the last of the eighth inning it will be Campanella with a catcher
- 2:27:36who hits eighth and probably a pinch hitter in the top of the order.
- 2:27:41One to one touch.
- 2:27:42Low outside for ball two.
- 2:27:44Two balls, one strike.
- 2:27:47Two and one.
- 2:27:54Ball game that was 10 to one is now 10 to six for New York.
- 2:27:58Two out for the Yankees in the eighth.
- 2:28:02Two on pitchers, a curve just missing high outside for ball three.
- 2:28:06And Fulika turns his back, walks to the back of the mound.
- 2:28:13He still has not turned around to accept the ball from Campanella.
- 2:28:18Now he does.
- 2:28:22Three and one.
- 2:28:34Three one pitch, swung on and missed.
- 2:28:36Fast ball in by the hand.
- 2:28:38The Dodgers taking this cut.
- 2:28:40Three and two.
- 2:28:44Campanella bumps aside.
- 2:28:46Making response to the livers.
- 2:28:49High inside for ball four and the magio walks.
- 2:28:52Fulika and his relief roll with the first five and now walks the magio.
- 2:28:57They have bases on balls.
- 2:29:00The Yankees have received eight walks.
- 2:29:03The Dodgers have received four.
- 2:29:06Great number of runs stemmed from the walks.
- 2:29:14Snyder has been very busy in center field.
- 2:29:16Mel has just checked up.
- 2:29:17He looked back through his box score.
- 2:29:19Snyder has had 18 put outs so far in the series.
- 2:29:22The record in a five game search for center fielders, 20 by Earl Combs.
- 2:29:27Tommy Brown takes a curve ball, Bobby Brown takes a curve ball in there for a false strike.
- 2:29:35No balls, one strike.
- 2:29:38Bobby has had a single walk strike out on a triple.
- 2:29:42Brown gets in and sets it to Fulika.
- 2:29:44That's his right foot on the slab.
- 2:29:46He's in pitching position.
- 2:29:47Delivered the magio, breaks and Brown hits the ball out of the left field.
- 2:29:50He's in there for a base hit.
- 2:29:51It's a bounding ball that almost goes down.
- 2:29:53The magio holds on a second base.
- 2:29:55The throw goes into second.
- 2:29:57So two men go on a walk to Joe and another base hit for Brown.
- 2:30:02Line single in the left field.
- 2:30:04That ball almost had enough kangaroo in it to bounce up high over the left fielder.
- 2:30:12So for the Yankees, man at first and second.
- 2:30:15And stepping in is Gene Woodley.
- 2:30:17These who had a nine run lead are now reduced to a four and they'd like to have some of
- 2:30:22that big plus back again.
- 2:30:24All they can get.
- 2:30:25The Yankees of course trying to nail the series down.
- 2:30:29The Dodgers trying to remain alive.
- 2:30:32The matter is quite simple, very basic.
- 2:30:35Throw, swung on a high fly ball into left field.
- 2:30:41Almost unripped.
- 2:30:42And the left fielder takes it for the third out.
- 2:30:45And this is the first time that Woodley has been retired as a batter.
- 2:30:48But that's all for the bid and the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:30:50No runs, one hit, two and a left.
- 2:30:53And with the Dodgers coming into the last half of the eighth, the score remains the
- 2:30:56Yankees 10 and the Dodgers six.
- 2:31:01Remember men, look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp.
- 2:31:06Use duet blue blades with the sharpest edges ever home.
- 2:31:13Mark Caffanella stepping in to be the first batter last of the eighth inning.
- 2:31:16And Bruce Edwards, a stocky right hand hitter, second string catcher is being brought in
- 2:31:21from the bullpen up to the bench.
- 2:31:23Apparently to hit for Follica.
- 2:31:25However, let's wait developments and see.
- 2:31:32And Edwards comes up to the bench and is apparently instructed to notify the bullpen who they
- 2:31:37wish to have throwing.
- 2:31:39And Branca is ordered to stop throwing and Minner is to throw.
- 2:31:45Eddie Mixch's utility infielder gets a catcher's lung goes down to the bullpen in place of
- 2:31:48Edwards.
- 2:31:51Page takes the sign, throws, first swing's a high high pop fly.
- 2:31:59Let's see the first baseman Tommy Henrik is under the ball, under it, he's got it.
- 2:32:04Throw one up and one gone.
- 2:32:08And Bruce Edwards walking up to pinch hit.
- 2:32:10This will be his second appearance.
- 2:32:13He ended game three as he looked to the third strike that paid through fast.
- 2:32:17For Brooklyn, number 10, Bruce Edwards starting for Follica.
- 2:32:24Edwards stepping in.
- 2:32:25Page trying to nail the world's championship down for the Yankees.
- 2:32:32Delivers fastball swung on and missed.
- 2:32:37It was Pagaw son along working for a pennant.
- 2:32:41What a job he did in the next and last game to keep the Yankees alive in order for them
- 2:32:44to win something.
- 2:32:46And now he's pitching for the big stick.
- 2:32:57Delivers fastball outside ball one.
- 2:33:02Oddly enough it was Pagaw in the seventh of the deciding game between these two teams
- 2:33:06in 47 that held Brooklyn off and enabled the Yankees to go ahead and win and clinch it.
- 2:33:12So he's being given a second chance to clinch it for his ball class.
- 2:33:17It's a rather appropriate honor.
- 2:33:19The games that he saved say nothing of those that he's won himself all season long.
- 2:33:2421 pitches swung on as a base hit into the field as the Dodgers remain going.
- 2:33:28Edwards is single, in the lap, then he's on the first.
- 2:33:36So hit number one on page number 10 for the Dodgers.
- 2:33:43That's hit number 20 in the ball game.
- 2:33:44You can add them appropriately correctly.
- 2:33:47And lead off with Peewee Reese who is two for four today.
- 2:33:53Six hits for 18 so far.
- 2:33:5612 to five games.
- 2:34:00Reese up.
- 2:34:03Yankees leading 10 to six.
- 2:34:05Third ball in, they're good for a call strike.
- 2:34:09Reese who is very good if an occasion of dropping a bunt for a base hit.
- 2:34:12Bluffs that he would bunt.
- 2:34:14Page broke off the mound toward the plate.
- 2:34:15The third baseman Brown came rushing in.
- 2:34:23Nexus is being recalled at the bench from the both end.
- 2:34:27Menner is the pitcher up throwing.
- 2:34:28Apparently it will be Menner who will come on to relieve in the ninth inning.
- 2:34:32Big tall range, he left hand it.
- 2:34:35Pitchers checks first.
- 2:34:36Henrik is not on the bag.
- 2:34:37Reese swings and misses.
- 2:34:38Nothing in two.
- 2:34:39And judging from the way the Peewee moved, the speed he was trying to hit that ball on
- 2:34:45The right.
- 2:34:46Nothing in two.
- 2:34:47Edwards doesn't get off first very far.
- 2:34:48The percentage of course is for Henrik to be off the bag and the first baseman is.
- 2:34:59Halfway between first base and his full fielding depth.
- 2:35:05Pitchers swung on hit right back to the mound.
- 2:35:06Page is up with it.
- 2:35:07Throw it down to second base for a zero.
- 2:35:08One out to throw on the first base.
- 2:35:09Double play.
- 2:35:10And that ends the eighth inning.
- 2:35:11So a bounding ball is hit back to the pitcher.
- 2:35:16Page knew what to do with it.
- 2:35:19Fought it back to Schwarzkopf for Zudal who then relayed it over to first baseman Tommy
- 2:35:23Henrik and that took care of that.
- 2:35:26And for the Yankees that gives them their fifth double play in the series.
- 2:35:31The Dodgers have had one.
- 2:35:34So at the end there are eight full rounds.
- 2:35:36Men are coming in from the bullpen and the Yankees lead with Page trying to be the boy
- 2:35:41at the dike ten to six.
- 2:35:43Folks, the popular Gillette Tech razor with five Gillette blue blades for only 49 cents
- 2:35:50is a world famous shaving bargain believe me.
- 2:35:54This razor has one feature after another that makes shaving smooth and comfortable.
- 2:35:59It sets up stubble as a barber does.
- 2:36:01Holds the blade rigidly, eliminates edge vibration, protects you against nicks.
- 2:36:07For real shaving satisfaction at a rock bottom price, get a Gillette Tech razor.
- 2:36:20For men are the 17th Dodger to get into the ball game and the sixth pitcher comes on to
- 2:36:24The mouth.
- 2:36:25The market for the most players in a World Series game by one team is 21.
- 2:36:32Correction then there's the 18th.
- 2:36:35So a minute comes on.
- 2:36:41For the Yankees it will be Mapes, Coleman and Page, the last third of the batting order
- 2:36:46in the top of the ninth.
- 2:36:53The Yankees got two runs off Barney who walked the first two men that he faced early in the
- 2:36:58afternoon about two hours and 45 minutes ago.
- 2:37:02Then Rex and a pickoff for Tipped at second base made a wild throw and the runners each
- 2:37:06went up a notch.
- 2:37:07So a fly ball and single got them in.
- 2:37:12Then the Yankees picked up three runs and got Barney out of there in the third inning.
- 2:37:16They continued at the expense of Jack Banner with single runs in the fourth and fifth and
- 2:37:21got three runs off Erskine in the sixth inning.
- 2:37:25Hadn't finally got them out, Fulika held them.
- 2:37:27Men are now taking over.
- 2:37:29Meanwhile the Yankees would have been front running just tomorrow.
- 2:37:31There is a consultation between the umpires and Commissioner Chandler and the lights are
- 2:37:38going to be turned on.
- 2:37:39The lights are going to be turned on for the first time in a World Series ball game.
- 2:37:43Commissioner Chandler who has had all the World Series so efficiently and so thoughtfully
- 2:37:49now says that with the whole field in shadow we will pause until all the lights can be
- 2:37:54turned on.
- 2:37:55So what the commission is doing is what baseball has been doing is taking advantage of the
- 2:37:59benefits of science.
- 2:38:02So the lights are now being turned on and this is an historic occasion.
- 2:38:06They were about to be turned on oddly enough in a Sunday game which went very long between
- 2:38:11The Yankees and the Dodgers in 1947.
- 2:38:14But the ball game happened to end.
- 2:38:15Had they gone another inning the lights would have been turned on then.
- 2:38:18And as we told you earlier the commissioner had said that he would turn the lights on
- 2:38:24if he felt it was necessary.
- 2:38:26So after a brief consultation with the played umpire Cal Hubbard and Beams Redden who is
- 2:38:31The senior umpire from the National League as far as years of work are concerned the
- 2:38:37commissioner said we will hold up the ball game, let men throw a few more pitches and
- 2:38:41get the lights turned on.
- 2:38:42So light power after light power are being turned on.
- 2:38:46So history is being made.
- 2:38:47The lights are being turned on.
- 2:38:50As we look at the clock on the scoreboard here at Brooklyn it indicates roughly ten
- 2:38:54minutes of five Eastern Standard Time.
- 2:38:56Where there are no stands they would not have had to turn the lights on.
- 2:39:02But with the sun setting behind the main stands the whole field is completely in deep shadow.
- 2:39:07So the lights are being turned on.
- 2:39:10And it takes a little time to get them all turned on.
- 2:39:12In other words there is no master switch that turns on all the light powers at one fell
- 2:39:16swoop.
- 2:39:17Now let's see Mel I see you've got the record book out.
- 2:39:24Is this game going to be a long game by time compared to some other World Series games?
- 2:39:28No, Red it's an approximation of course a great deal happens.
- 2:39:33Depends on what happens here in the ninth inning.
- 2:39:35The longest game by time three hours and twenty eight minutes the Tigers and Cubs in 1945
- 2:39:41but that was an extra inning game.
- 2:39:43Won twelve innings.
- 2:39:45The longest game by time for a nine inning game is three hours and nineteen minutes the
- 2:39:49Dodgers and the Yankees in that very same game you were talking about a little while
- 2:39:52ago.
- 2:39:53And we've gone two hours and forty five minutes so far so possibly could approach the record.
- 2:39:59They say that everything happens at Brooklyn when we got the lights on for the first time
- 2:40:02in a World Series game.
- 2:40:04And now Menno makes his first pitch relieving in the night to Cliff Mape the left hand hitter.
- 2:40:09And it is called strike.
- 2:40:11Menno left handed.
- 2:40:12Mape the left hand hitter.
- 2:40:15Over two today.
- 2:40:16Takes a curve one there for call strike two.
- 2:40:19Nothing in two.
- 2:40:20So all the lights are on and it makes quite a difference.
- 2:40:25Although the lights do not take as much effect with daylight as they do of course in complete
- 2:40:29darkness.
- 2:40:30But that will help.
- 2:40:32It destroys the shadows.
- 2:40:34Throw high outside.
- 2:40:39That's a very sound decision by Commissioner Chandler because it not only adds to the efficiency
- 2:40:45of the fairness of the game but it prevents any possible injury.
- 2:40:49One and two pitch curves from on there's a high fly ball into left center field.
- 2:40:55Starter coming over.
- 2:40:56Wait left field almost over.
- 2:40:58And the left fielder makes the catch.
- 2:41:02So put out for left fielder Louis Olmo.
- 2:41:04One up one away.
- 2:41:05Top of the ninth.
- 2:41:07The fans in the ballpark are remaining waiting to see if they will do something in the last
- 2:41:11half of the ninth inning.
- 2:41:12I imagine that's what you folks are doing listening to this Gillette broadcast.
- 2:41:15Yankees ten and the Dodgers six.
- 2:41:21Second baseman Jerry Coleman had a fine series right hand batter stepping in.
- 2:41:28As hard as pitches throw the ball we're only 60 feet and six inches away.
- 2:41:32When it begins to get dark in the ballpark it's very hazardous for a hitter.
- 2:41:40Throw high inside.
- 2:41:42Ball one.
- 2:41:43One ball no strikes.
- 2:41:46One out top of the ninth.
- 2:41:55Minus Jerry leaning in pitches swung on file back.
- 2:42:02One and one.
- 2:42:06One away, nobody on.
- 2:42:14Jerry leaning in.
- 2:42:20Minus pitches a fastball too low two balls one strike.
- 2:42:24Bill Dickey coaching it first, Hollis at the Coleman, get on that bag.
- 2:42:29One of the perennial first base coaching war cries.
- 2:42:34Two on pitch, swung on, drilled out into right center field.
- 2:42:41There's Hemanci going back, the ball's hit over his head.
- 2:42:44And there's Holman around, first base coming in a second, and stands up for a double.
- 2:42:49So he's got one.
- 2:42:50That gives him now a total of two hits today and five so far for the series.
- 2:42:54He just moved right in as though he'd been playing in them all his life.
- 2:42:57This happens to be his first.
- 2:42:59And he's hit his base hits to all fields.
- 2:43:02And now picture Page comes off.
- 2:43:07That's the third double for Coleman as he stands down at second base.
- 2:43:11One out, Page, a ten batter stepping in.
- 2:43:19The Yankees, that gives them 11 hits and they have gotten at least one hit off of all six
- 2:43:24of the Brooklyn pitches.
- 2:43:25Got three off Bonnie, three off batter, two off Erskine, and one each off Hatton, Flicker,
- 2:43:31and Armino.
- 2:43:32Page takes a fastball in on his hands for ball one.
- 2:43:35One ball, no strikes.
- 2:43:38One gone.
- 2:43:43I feel toward right.
- 2:43:44I play him to pull.
- 2:43:46So swings at the right back to the mound.
- 2:43:48Minner runs Coleman back into second and throws over to first and pages out.
- 2:43:52One to three if you score and he puts it at the first baseman.
- 2:43:59Minner to Hodges, two men are gone and the batter is Phil Rizzuto.
- 2:44:04Phil has not had a hit today.
- 2:44:09The Yankee hits have been hogged by Brown and Woodley, each having three.
- 2:44:13Coleman's had two.
- 2:44:17Rizzuto swinging, foul tips it.
- 2:44:20Overall, one strike.
- 2:44:25New York 10, Brooklyn six.
- 2:44:30Stengel, of course, would like to pick up this run.
- 2:44:38Coleman represents his second, a little bit more on ninth inning insurance.
- 2:44:41Fastball high outside for ball one.
- 2:44:43One ball, one strike.
- 2:44:45Rizzuto, tough man up there at the dish.
- 2:44:48He's hard to get past.
- 2:44:57Big tall left-hander delivers a slow curve.
- 2:44:59Joe, line of the right field, Hermanski coming on and makes the catch to the line.
- 2:45:02The ball is well-hipped, so that's all for that bit at the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:45:07So here we are.
- 2:45:10This is it.
- 2:45:11Last half of the night.
- 2:45:12The Yankees, 10 and the Dodgers, six.
- 2:45:17Joe will know something definite in the next few minutes.
- 2:45:21That's for certain.
- 2:45:22What I was saying definite is a real pause, 10 seconds, for station identification.
- 2:45:28This is the neutral broadcasting system.
- 2:45:32Here is the World Series exclusively over WOR.
- 2:45:35See it on WOR TV, Channel 9.
- 2:45:38WOR and WORFM, New York.
- 2:45:50Last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:45:52And Eddie Nexus will hit for Jorgensen to get a right-hand batter up against left-hander
- 2:45:56Joe Page, who's leaving.
- 2:45:58There's nobody throwing in the Yankee bow pen.
- 2:46:00Manager Stengel has complete confidence in Joe Page.
- 2:46:06Nobody throwing in the Brooklyn bow pen and no reason to be until several fellows get
- 2:46:12on base and score.
- 2:46:14The Yankees, 10 and the Dodgers, six.
- 2:46:17Now is this to be the new tomorrow or not?
- 2:46:27Mixers who makes the 19th player that manager Schotten has committed to the ball game.
- 2:46:32He's hitting for Jorgensen after the ninth inning.
- 2:46:37Right-hand batter.
- 2:46:40Hot deal around toward left.
- 2:46:44Well Big Page, a Stengel's man.
- 2:46:46He's got nobody behind him in the bow pen right now.
- 2:46:53Joe sort of rubs his left arm across his nose.
- 2:46:58Now looks down, takes a sign from Barra.
- 2:47:01Pitches in the crouch.
- 2:47:03And Page starts to pump and then decides that he won't pitch backs off.
- 2:47:09Pitting isn't just right.
- 2:47:12Lights are on.
- 2:47:13Came on top of his ninth inning.
- 2:47:14Throw.
- 2:47:15Swung on.
- 2:47:16Line drive.
- 2:47:17In the left field for a base hit.
- 2:47:18It'll be for two.
- 2:47:19There's Mixers around first base.
- 2:47:20The ball kicking around in left.
- 2:47:22And there's Mixers coming in a second with a whistling double.
- 2:47:25The shooter runs out to the left and brings the ball in.
- 2:47:32Well Eddie Mixers opens up with a line drive double.
- 2:47:39And Jim Turner, Alan Orta, for manager Stengel, motions down to the bow pen for a right-hander.
- 2:47:44So there's going to be somebody throwing down in back of Page now.
- 2:47:49And Duke Snider is at the plate.
- 2:47:50He's had hits his last two times up.
- 2:47:52Two for four.
- 2:47:53And Ali Reynolds, a pitching star for the Yankees, is in the bow pen drawing.
- 2:47:58There's a curve outside to Snider.
- 2:48:03Ten to six.
- 2:48:08Faber, New York.
- 2:48:09Mixers has opened up with a pinch and double last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:48:13Snider at the plate.
- 2:48:15The Yankees stood to be.
- 2:48:18Page pitches and Snider swings him.
- 2:48:19This is a fastball in down around his knees.
- 2:48:22He went after it.
- 2:48:23One ball, one strike.
- 2:48:24Snider to be followed by Robinson, a man's key.
- 2:48:29Arjun is at the back from the batting order.
- 2:48:39Fort Frick, National League president, looking on in Kepler.
- 2:48:41Looking over there with Mrs. Frick.
- 2:48:43Back of the Brooklyn dog out.
- 2:48:44There's a curveball in to Snider.
- 2:48:47One and two.
- 2:48:49One ball, two strikes.
- 2:48:51Mixers not getting very far off second base.
- 2:48:58Ali Reynolds throwing in the bow pen for New York.
- 2:49:07Snider swings him.
- 2:49:09This is for strike three.
- 2:49:12And thus Snider in a five game series has now struck out eight nines.
- 2:49:17And this ties the World Series record for the most strikeouts in an eight game series.
- 2:49:22It was originally set by Rogers Harnsdon.
- 2:49:31Robinson at the plate.
- 2:49:32And Stengel steps out in front of the Yankee bench, gets the attention of the infield and
- 2:49:37Page to caution against the bunt for a base hit.
- 2:49:41Robinson swings and follows the ball on top of the stand out of play.
- 2:49:46No balls, one strike.
- 2:49:52At the O, round to at last.
- 2:50:03Page works.
- 2:50:04Robinson swings a high foul back on the screen.
- 2:50:06Nothing in to.
- 2:50:07No balls, two strikes.
- 2:50:09Yankee ten.
- 2:50:10The Dodgers six.
- 2:50:11Mixers at second, one out.
- 2:50:13Back to the ninth inning.
- 2:50:16Lights are on for the first time in the history of World Series play.
- 2:50:21Mr. Chandler after conferring with the two senior umpires has been turned on.
- 2:50:26Excellent move is getting dark inside the park itself.
- 2:50:35Mixers just standing down on second.
- 2:50:37Page delivers.
- 2:50:38Robinson swings and there's a nubbed foul ball into the third base band.
- 2:50:43The ball was in on Jack's hands.
- 2:50:45No balls, two strikes.
- 2:50:47And Page bowing down.
- 2:50:50This is one of his most important ballistic assignments.
- 2:50:56Reynolds who pitched the shot out and won the first game, one to nothing, nailed down
- 2:51:00The last ten Dodgers yesterday, is throwing in the bullpen for the Yankees.
- 2:51:05Stengel isn't worried about tomorrow.
- 2:51:07He doesn't want any tomorrow.
- 2:51:08He wants it today.
- 2:51:09Throw.
- 2:51:10Swung on hand.
- 2:51:11Missed.
- 2:51:12Robinson tries to check his swing and can't.
- 2:51:15He's stuck out.
- 2:51:16There was a dancing curveball on the outside that got him and Page is bowing down.
- 2:51:23He's rolling.
- 2:51:24And the Yankees who hold the record of course for teams getting in the World Series the
- 2:51:28most frequently, winning the most World Series games, the most World Series titles, are trying
- 2:51:34to in their sixteenth series, nail down their fifty-fifth series victory and their twelfth
- 2:51:38series one.
- 2:51:39They're only one out away from it.
- 2:51:41Gene Hermanski up and takes a curveball over.
- 2:51:45All strike.
- 2:51:52That field step toward right.
- 2:51:54Ten to six favor New York.
- 2:51:57Throw.
- 2:51:58Swung on and fouled off into the stands back at third base.
- 2:52:05Mobile.
- 2:52:06All two strikes.
- 2:52:07Well, this is the third meeting between the Yankees and the Dodgers in the ball classic
- 2:52:22and they'll be meeting tomorrow.
- 2:52:27Both great farm assistants.
- 2:52:34Gene Hermanski holding a club down by the end, the Dodgers down to the last strike of
- 2:52:38their last out.
- 2:52:39Sterling Buffer with a man at second.
- 2:52:42Page.
- 2:52:43Climax relief pitcher in the trade these days.
- 2:52:48Trying to fondly put the Yankees in the clubhouse victorious.
- 2:52:50Let's see.
- 2:52:51They pitch too low under the knees and it is ball one.
- 2:52:55One ball, two strikes.
- 2:52:58One and two.
- 2:53:02Hermanski square stands.
- 2:53:10Reynolds begins easing up.
- 2:53:13Throwing down to Nahos in the bullpen for New York.
- 2:53:18Page, there is a sign.
- 2:53:24Big fellow ready.
- 2:53:25Delivers.
- 2:53:26A curve low.
- 2:53:27Ball two.
- 2:53:28Ball game is still alive.
- 2:53:30Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:53:36The count is two and two.
- 2:53:38Two men are gone.
- 2:53:40Page takes out a big red bandana.
- 2:53:43Maps the beads of perspiration off of his face.
- 2:53:48Now he steps down the mound.
- 2:53:50Looks down with those cold blue eyes of his.
- 2:53:53Take the sign from Stocky Crouch.
- 2:53:56Yogi Barrow.
- 2:53:57Catch your back to the plate.
- 2:53:59Page is still standing in second after opening up the last of the night with a pinch hit
- 2:54:02double.
- 2:54:03Two to a pitch.
- 2:54:08Just low outside.
- 2:54:09Just missing and Page a little bit unhappy about that decision.
- 2:54:12It's a four count of three and two.
- 2:54:15Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:54:18Three and two.
- 2:54:24Page on the mound.
- 2:54:25Works three and two.
- 2:54:26Ball four.
- 2:54:27And Hransky walks off to first to go.
- 2:54:30First ball.
- 2:54:31First ball given up by Joe Page.
- 2:54:34And Gil Hodges walks to the plate.
- 2:54:37Big strapping first baseman to the home run.
- 2:54:40With two on to get Rashie out of the game and get the Dodgers up to then four runs behind.
- 2:54:46They've won it one time trailing by nine.
- 2:54:49The ball game remains as it was since Hodges last swung that bat for the home run.
- 2:54:53Ten to six.
- 2:54:54The tying rod is Roy Ormore waiting on deck.
- 2:54:59Ten to six New York.
- 2:55:00Two men on.
- 2:55:01Hodges takes a high curve ball for a ball one.
- 2:55:05And Reynolds is now throwing steadily in the bullpen.
- 2:55:10Stengel jumps to the front of his dugout again.
- 2:55:13Boy he's acting like a flea with a hot foot.
- 2:55:16Moves third baseman Brown a little deeper.
- 2:55:20The one and oh pitch.
- 2:55:21In there for a call strike.
- 2:55:25There's a fast ball.
- 2:55:27One ball one strike.
- 2:55:32Page in a set position delivers outside a fast ball for ball two.
- 2:55:38And Page hollers on the decision on that one.
- 2:55:39He didn't like it.
- 2:55:42Two balls one strike.
- 2:55:45Boy that tension is closing in.
- 2:55:56Hodges under orders of course.
- 2:55:57The manager shot and pitched by pitch.
- 2:55:58The two one pitch.
- 2:55:59He swung on a high foul back out of play on the screen.
- 2:56:02It's now two and two.
- 2:56:03Two balls two strikes.
- 2:56:08Page again with that red bandana.
- 2:56:10Now Stengel walking down to the water cooler.
- 2:56:13A wobbling familiar walk of his.
- 2:56:24Two balls two strikes.
- 2:56:25Stengel standing up he's not even sitting down.
- 2:56:28The two two pitch is swung on in this strike three.
- 2:56:31And the Yankees are champions again.
- 2:56:34For the twelfth time the Yankees are champions of the world.
- 2:56:38And Joe Page is being surrounded by his teammates.
- 2:56:40Casey Stengel out there and I shake him out of hand.
- 2:56:43And so I guess the story right now is Casey Stengel who was with the first played in the
- 2:56:49very first game in this ballpark at Ebbets Field in 1913.
- 2:56:53It was a long time but he comes back as manager of the world champion New York Yankees.
- 2:56:59So that does do it.
- 2:57:02That wraps it up.
- 2:57:03So that's all for that one.
- 2:57:05I'd like to congratulate both ball clubs.
- 2:57:08I'd like to congratulate the work of the umpires on the handling of the game by Commissioner
- 2:57:14Chandler and his staff.
- 2:57:17And without further ado Mel it's nice to work with you and congratulations on your assignment.
- 2:57:23Give my best to Stengel and the Yankees.
- 2:57:26The Yankees champions of the world in 1949.
- 2:57:29Winning it four out of five and finishing with Joe Page artistically nailing it down.
- 2:57:36Okay Mel here you are.
- 2:57:37Best of luck.
- 2:57:38Thank you very much Red.
- 2:57:40And again let me just say that it was a tremendous pleasure as it always is and I hope that we'll
- 2:57:46have the opportunity of working together again in the future.
- 2:57:49And so the Yankees win their 12th world's championship in 16 series in which they have
- 2:57:57participated and that is the fourth time that they have won a world's championship in five
- 2:58:04games.
- 2:58:05The totals, the Yankees 10 runs 11 hits, one error nine left on.
- 2:58:11The Dodgers six runs 11 hits, two errors and nine men left on.
- 2:58:15Vic Grasci is credited with the win his first world series victory while the loser is Rex
- 2:58:21Barney his second defeat he has won one.
- 2:58:24Banta Erskine, Hatton, Fulican, Minner in relief and Joe Page you might call that a
- 2:58:29bit of poetic justice in the way.
- 2:58:31Joe Page the big guy who had so much to do with the Yankees winning the pennant as he
- 2:58:37came in over 60 ball games in the course of the year in relief and was one of the key
- 2:58:41figures so much so that he is one of the few pitchers who have ever been considered in
- 2:58:48The voting for the most valuable player award.
- 2:58:51And as you always say it's just a shame when you get two great ball clips together that
- 2:58:56there must be one of them that will lose.
- 2:58:58So hats off to them both we hope that you enjoyed this world series.
- 2:59:02This is Mel Allen saying smooth sailing, smooth shaving and good afternoon from your host
- 2:59:08The Gillette Sink to Razor Company and Red Barber.
