- 2:40Lazarus Ali, your brother. I'm good man.
- 2:45Thank you for having me. I appreciate the the intense
- 2:49introduction and you and I talked about gratitude.
- 2:53I'm grateful to be here man, I'm honoured.
- 2:55Gratitude is good attitude. I only see that.
- 2:58And of course, when a person shares their time with you, they
- 3:01share their life with you because the SI unit for
- 3:03measuring life is time. So welcome back to the Kingdom's
- 3:07forecast, probably ranked in the global top 2.5% on listen notes.
- 3:13So today's conversation is about two things every leader,
- 3:16entrepreneur and dream tracer struggles with time management
- 3:21and mental health. These two are connected more
- 3:24than most people think. And I couldn't think of a better
- 3:28person to unpack this with me than my brother from another
- 3:32mother from Massachusetts, the Co founder of next level
- 3:36University, global top 100 podcaster and coach Alan
- 3:42Lazarus. Alan, welcome back to the show
- 3:46TIME. Management, baby.
- 3:47Time management, Yeah. This time is life.
- 3:51It is. I'll open with this.
- 3:55If you are fortunate enough to live to 100 years, that is 100
- 4:02years times 365 days. That's 36,500 days.
- 4:08When I give speeches at high schools, colleges, I gave a
- 4:11training to a group of 300 students last week.
- 4:14I said if you had $36,500 in a bank account and you could never
- 4:19make another dollar, how carefully would you invest that
- 4:22money? So as of right now, I have 16
- 4:25minutes and 57 seconds on this podcast.
- 4:28I am always tracking my time on my Apple Watch and or my iPhone.
- 4:32Time is life. You only have three resources in
- 4:35life. You have time, you have effort,
- 4:37and you have money. And the most important on there
- 4:39is time. Where you put your time and
- 4:41effort will determine how much money you earn and how much
- 4:43money you earn and where you invest it will determine how
- 4:45much money you earn. So it's time, effort and money.
- 4:47That's the only three resources any of us have, and we all have
- 4:53168 hours in a week. If you sleep 8 hours a day,
- 4:56that's 56 hours per week that you sleep. 8 * 7 is 56, and if
- 5:03you do 168 -, 56, you get 112 waking hours per week.
- 5:08So assuming you sleep well and consistently and you average 8
- 5:11hours of sleep, you get 112 hours per week. 52 weeks a year,
- 5:15520 weeks per decade. The average life expectancy in
- 5:21the US and I live in the US, so I'll use those stats is 80 for
- 5:25women, 79 for men and it's increasing fortunately.
- 5:29But all you have is time and you can spend your time building or
- 5:34enjoying. And what I try to teach people
- 5:37is what if you enjoyed building? So building is you are taking
- 5:43the present moment to add value to others and build yourself,
- 5:49build the family, build the business, build something of
- 5:51value. So you're building or you're
- 5:54enjoying, but syntax matters. Some people build to enjoy,
- 5:59other people enjoy to build. Syntax matters.
- 6:02And so building is I'm going to invest the now for a bread or
- 6:06tomorrow. That's me.
- 6:07I tend to be on the builder side.
- 6:10And so it's a percentage. I try to do probably 90%
- 6:14building, 10% enjoying, but I also enjoy building, so there's
- 6:19a way to integrate them. So is it building first for you
- 6:23or is it enjoying first for you? Because if you want to enjoy 1st
- 6:27and you don't like to build, you're probably not going to
- 6:29achieve very large goals. And I used to be bashful about
- 6:32this. I used to not talk about this.
- 6:34But if you have big goals and dreams, you better learn how to
- 6:37build and you better start building quick.
- 6:40The people who achieve their goals and dreams are very future
- 6:42oriented and they they usually invest the now for a brighter
- 6:45tomorrow. They don't usually focus on
- 6:46quality of life. And ironically, the people who
- 6:49have the highest quality of life are usually the people that are
- 6:51willing to build more in the present at the expense of
- 6:54quality of life. And then ten, 20-30 years later
- 6:56you see them. I have a mentor who is a multi
- 7:00multi millionaire. He was the CEO and CEO of
- 7:04several different billion dollar tech companies.
- 7:08And now he flies to the Bahamas private.
- 7:10He, you know, bought a house without even going inside of it.
- 7:13He he has literally millions of dollars and he's an investor.
- 7:18But the first 30 years of his career were grinding.
- 7:22And if you saw his life now, you'd say, oh, that must be
- 7:25nice. But what you don't realise is
- 7:26that his quality of life, you know, he drove a Toyota back in
- 7:30the day. So it's just really important to
- 7:32understand that. And I think that unfortunately
- 7:34social media makes it seem like you can enjoy now and build and
- 7:39achieve huge goals without a tonne of effort, which is just
- 7:42wildly untrue. Widely, widely untrue.
- 7:44Quick 1. So I really appreciate you
- 7:46talking about the syntax. And of course, you know I talk
- 7:49about in communication, content and context are very, very
- 7:52important, right? Making it sync.
- 7:56Enjoy to build and beauty enjoy. Now I see why a lot of people
- 8:00think of me as unconventional or as a weird person because when I
- 8:05think about the percentages, I think it's a 5050 for me
- 8:08personally. I enjoy to build and I also
- 8:12beauty enjoy and like I found that equilibrium of both, both
- 8:19because I enjoy build in. I think about building this
- 8:24podcast, for example, as a while we're speaking right now, it's
- 8:28ranked global top 2.5%. And I think about the fact that
- 8:32I started November 18, 2023. You are a global top 100
- 8:37podcaster and you know what it takes to build a podcast, right?
- 8:41And this is less than two years and I'm already in the global
- 8:45rankings. It it, it makes more sense to me
- 8:48when I look at people who actually started way beyond me,
- 8:51but before me rather. And when I see the rankings, I
- 8:54see the kind of forecasts that are on the same pedestal as me.
- 8:59All of them started before me. And.
- 9:03When it wasn't making the money it's making now, like a lot of
- 9:07people were sort of discouraging me, telling me or why are you
- 9:10keeping up doing something that is not you then something,
- 9:13right? But for me, I was enjoying the
- 9:15process. I still enjoy the process and
- 9:18now that is bringing returns. Like I enjoy the returns.
- 9:22So for me it's, you know, like well balanced.
- 9:25I enjoy the process and I also do the process to enjoy.
- 9:29But you know, back to time, most people mismanage that gift of
- 9:34time. Why?
- 9:36Because you share that sentiment with me that the SI uniform
- 9:40measurement life this time. But why would people waste their
- 9:45time? Is it because they don't know
- 9:47that time is life? I don't know.
- 9:49There's a book by Lucius Seneca. It's one of the Roman Stoics
- 9:54called On the Shortness of Life, and it's a pretty intense read,
- 9:58but it basically talks about much we squander time.
- 10:03And you even mentioned 5050 there.
- 10:05So let's just do the numbers of that.
- 10:06So assuming you sleep an average of 8 hours per night, you have
- 10:09112 hours a week. If you do 50, you know, divide
- 10:13that by two, 112 / 2 is 56. So that means you're working 56
- 10:18hours a week, you're building 56 hours a week.
- 10:21So most people think of full time as 40 hours.
- 10:25I if you have 112 waking hours per week and you're only
- 10:29building 40 of them, I think you're in some trouble and I'll
- 10:33explain why. If you want to build your
- 10:34physique, so fitness, how long does that take per day?
- 10:41If you want to build your intimate relationship, how long
- 10:44does that take per day? If you want to build a business,
- 10:48how long does that take per day? And so why do people squander
- 10:52time? The truth, I think
- 10:53unfortunately, and I'm, I'm a computer engineer and if you
- 10:56listen to the past episodes, you'll already know this, but
- 11:00everything in my mind is numbers.
- 11:04And if you take a dollar and you put it in a financial calculator
- 11:10and you grow it by 0.1% per day for 50 years, that's 50 * 365.
- 11:20You end up with $84,000,000. It's 83 something.
- 11:23So I rounded up and if someone takes weekends off it's only 260
- 11:29days a year. So 52 weeks a year times 5 is
- 11:32200 and 62160 * 50. And if you do this, you can do
- 11:38this in a financial calculator. If you do it in ChatGPT make
- 11:40sure you correct it because ChatGPT is wonky with numbers.
- 11:44But go to Google, look up a financial calculator, put $1.00
- 11:47in it and grow it by 0.1 percent, 110th of 1% per day for
- 11:5150 years. It's $84,000,000 if you take
- 11:54weekends off brother. And you don't get better on the
- 11:57weekends, you just coast. It's only 439,000.
- 12:03So someone who works and builds everyday versus someone who
- 12:08doesn't. It's not even close.
- 12:11To answer your original question of why do people squander time,
- 12:15I think that we just don't understand what's possible. 10
- 12:20years ago, I got in a car accident.
- 12:22I was 26 years old and I faced sort of mortality.
- 12:25My dad died in a car when he was 28, and that was 10 years ago.
- 12:28And I faced mortality and I was like, you know what?
- 12:30I have wasted so much time and effort now, I didn't waste it
- 12:34all right? I got good grades.
- 12:36I got a computer engineering degree.
- 12:37I got my master's in business. I was very successful in
- 12:39corporate. But the amount of time and
- 12:41effort that I squandered on persons, places, things and
- 12:45ideas that I will never get back is insane.
- 12:50And so I made a promise to myself, Alan, never again will
- 12:54you waste time and effort. And what you realise is that
- 12:59when you invest your time and effort every single day on
- 13:02getting a little smarter, a little stronger, a little
- 13:06better, a little better speaker, a little better communicator, a
- 13:08little bit better of a business owner, a little bit you, it
- 13:11compounds. So I think the reason people
- 13:13squander time is they don't understand the downside.
- 13:16If I told you, you and me, man, in 50 years, I'm going to be 86,
- 13:21you're going to be how old are you?
- 13:2233. 33, yeah. All right, so you're going to be
- 13:2583 and I'm going to be 86. All right, I'm going to take
- 13:29weekends off. In this metaphor, I'm not
- 13:30really. But in this metaphor, and we're
- 13:32both going to get 0.1% better per day, OK.
- 13:37And we're going to start investing.
- 13:39We're going to earn 0.1% more money per day for the next 50
- 13:43years. I'm going to take weekends off.
- 13:46You're going to work the weekends.
- 13:48You're going to work every week. You're going to have $84,000,000
- 13:51and I'm going to have five $439,000.
- 13:55So you're going to have 191 times the wealth that I have.
- 14:00And that works for health, wealth, and love.
- 14:03That works for all goals. It's it's the math.
- 14:09You can literally Google this. It's the math and but people are
- 14:14like, well, I don't want to work every day.
- 14:15Listen, you don't have to work all day every day. 0.1% better
- 14:20is not that hard. Do you think you can get 0.1%
- 14:24stronger today? Absolutely.
- 14:26If you go to the gym, absolutely.
- 14:27Absolutely, absolutely. And I'll just tell people I
- 14:30weaponize consistency, consistency as a weapon.
- 14:33Nice, and do you think you can get 0.1% smarter?
- 14:37Absolutely. Do you think you can get 0.1%
- 14:41better of a communicator? That simple, yeah.
- 14:45And This is why I believe so deeply in coaching and books and
- 14:49training programmes and investing in yourself.
- 14:52The wealthiest people on earth are investors.
- 14:55They invest today for a bigger, better, brighter tomorrow.
- 15:00When Jeff Bezos went in 1994 to investors and he was going to
- 15:04give away equity for $20,000, they said, what's the Internet?
- 15:09And he said, well, the Internet is this place where you connect
- 15:12with other people globally on, on what's called the World Wide
- 15:15Web. And he's explaining it.
- 15:17And now he owns 8.6% of Amazon.com, which is a company
- 15:22that's worth $2.44 trillion. I researched this last week.
- 15:26So he has a $250 billion net worth.
- 15:29Now, that does not mean he has $250 billion in his bank
- 15:31account, OK? It means he owns 8.6% of a $2.44
- 15:36trillion company. So if the if the company were to
- 15:38go out of business, he would have $0.00.
- 15:40But the point is, Jeff Bezos in 1994, which was 31 years ago,
- 15:48was just a regular guy, a regular guy with a really big
- 15:53dream who's really intelligent, who saw a trend.
- 15:58He saw that the Internet was growing at a ridiculous rate,
- 16:02and he decided to create and sell books online.
- 16:05And I think that that's what we all have the opportunity to do,
- 16:10whether it's starting a podcast or building company.
- 16:12I think it's the little small daily disciplines showing up
- 16:15when you don't want to every single day and and.
- 16:18Time. Management, time management.
- 16:19Yep, time management is every unit of time is to just get a
- 16:24little better, a little smarter, a little stronger, a little more
- 16:26effective, a little more skilled.
- 16:28And when you do that over time, it's unbelievable.
- 16:31Last piece I started this habit called Facebook Memory of the
- 16:35Day. So you're 33?
- 16:36I'm 36. So you remember Facebook when it
- 16:38was just college kids, right? Yeah, absolutely.
- 16:42Yeah. OK.
- 16:42All right, So I just pulled up a photo of me from 13 years ago.
- 16:48I'll show it on YouTube. 13 years ago, this is me driving to
- 16:52Los Angeles and I, I wanted to work in show business.
- 16:58That was when I was 20 years old.
- 16:59So 13 years ago, 23 I was 23 years old and 13 years ago I
- 17:07everything is similar and different.
- 17:09Let me explain. So 13 * 365, I've had 4745 days
- 17:18since then to invest. So where did I put those 4745
- 17:23days? Did I get a little stronger?
- 17:25Did I get a little smarter? And back then, I wanted to work
- 17:27in show business. I actually had an interview at
- 17:30SpaceX, actually, which is an interesting thing because SpaceX
- 17:32is headquartered in California. And I lived in LA for like 3 1/2
- 17:35months. I came home for some family
- 17:37stuff. My dreams are still there, but
- 17:43they look very different. I've evolved, I've adapted, I've
- 17:45changed. So the only wrong answer is to
- 17:50not have goals. Goals force you to use each unit
- 17:53of time. If I had no goals, brother, I
- 17:59would have no urgency. If I have no urgency, I would
- 18:02have no necessity. If I have no necessity, if you
- 18:05have no goals, when you wake up in the morning, you don't even
- 18:08know what to do. Imagine if Michael Phelps's
- 18:12coach was like, yeah, man, just jump in the pool.
- 18:15You swim around. It's called free wind optimism.
- 18:18You know, when I was a strategic class, you know, to become a
- 18:22chartered accountant, the guy who who was teaching us said if
- 18:25you, if you feel to plant, you plan to feel, right.
- 18:29We don't realise that failing to plan is a plan on its own
- 18:33because it's actually a plan to fill.
- 18:35So you really can't blame the guys who don't have a plan
- 18:38because they actually have set that plan to fill.
- 18:42Yeah. So that is also a goal on its
- 18:44own. But you know, coming back to the
- 18:46whole time management theme, right?
- 18:48So let's link it with mental health.
- 18:50You know, high achievers, they, they feel every hour of the day,
- 18:53but stress, anxiety and of course, burnouts tend to creep
- 18:57in. So you are a coach, you know,
- 19:00you coach entrepreneurs globally.
- 19:02So how does poor time management impact mental health?
- 19:11The first thing to understand is it's a conscious choice, so I'll
- 19:15share this with everybody. I was an achiever by nature and
- 19:19when I wasn't focused on my goals, I would have anxiety.
- 19:25And to me, in order to get out of anxiety, I would need to get
- 19:30my button gear because there's something called opportunity
- 19:35cost. If you sit around for the next
- 19:37three weeks and don't accomplish anything, don't do anything, you
- 19:40have no idea how much less your future just got.
- 19:43It's called opportunity cost. It's like, it's like what I
- 19:47talked about earlier about taking weekends off versus
- 19:49working and building in the weekends doesn't mean you have
- 19:51to work 12 hour days every weekend.
- 19:52The point is, is you, you compound opportunity cost is
- 19:56your future gets smaller if you don't invest today.
- 20:00So I had a lot of anxiety associated with not.
- 20:03Building so I think a lot of people do and they try to escape
- 20:09it. So for me, my escape was
- 20:10alcohol. So back in the day I would have
- 20:14these dreams that are pulling me.
- 20:16I would have these huge dreams that are just pulling me.
- 20:18They're calling me they're saying Alan you can do this.
- 20:21My highest self was like, Alan, get it together man, you can do
- 20:26this let's go get off your ass. That's my highest self.
- 20:31OK, some people have a less intense highest self.
- 20:35Alter ego. You know, but instead of
- 20:38listening to that voice, I would drink and it would turn off.
- 20:44So if I took like four or five shots right now, my inner voice,
- 20:50my calling, my highest self would turn off and it would turn
- 20:54off for like a couple hours. But then the next day it would
- 20:58turn back on and it would say, hey, now not only am I louder,
- 21:02but now you're behind even more. That can be thrown in.
- 21:07It's not good, man. So at the end of the day, I
- 21:10think when it comes to mental health, you got to figure out
- 21:12what your calling is. Do you have anxiety because
- 21:16you're not going to the gym and you're not keeping the promises
- 21:18to yourself and you know you're capable of more and you're not
- 21:20following through? Because if so, then you need to
- 21:25learn how to align with that calling.
- 21:28Or are you overwhelmed on the other side where you're you,
- 21:31you've bitten off more than you can chew and you're grinding
- 21:35every day and you don't have any R&R and your, your struggle bus.
- 21:39So I like 8020, I think 80% building, 20% intentional
- 21:43recovery. Some people are overtraining and
- 21:47they go to the gym too much and they're doing 3 hours a day and
- 21:49they need to rest and recover. But most people are under
- 21:52training, right? So I want to pick your brain on
- 21:57the on the recovery side, you know, and what a great week to
- 22:01like segue into the fact that we now have a new brand partnership
- 22:05with Better Help, right? And Better Help is the world's
- 22:08leading online therapy brand. So what are your thoughts, you
- 22:12know, on therapy, especially online therapy, and how it helps
- 22:17with, you know, mental health recovery?
- 22:20Unbelievable. So my beautiful girlfriend and
- 22:24future wife has a company called Evolve Ventures and I also coach
- 22:28her business partner Bianca. I've been coaching her for six
- 22:31years. I also have a therapist named
- 22:33Carol, so she's trauma certified.
- 22:37My girlfriend, the other one, does CBT, cognitive behavioural
- 22:39therapy. I am the biggest proponent of
- 22:42therapy. I think coaching and therapy are
- 22:45two sides of the same coin. Has that too.
- 22:49Yeah, yeah, yeah. So therapy is is more about
- 22:51learning from the past and healing from the past and
- 22:56working on yourself. I think coaching is much more
- 22:59externally driven, goals, dreams, system structure
- 23:03oriented. Yeah, therapists also coach and
- 23:06coach coaches also do therapy. But ultimately I'm for it.
- 23:10I think it's really good and I think the world desperately
- 23:13needs to work on their mental health.
- 23:15I think the world physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.
- 23:17Physical health is the most important, in my opinion.
- 23:20Mental health is next, emotional health is third and spiritual is
- 23:234th. Physical, mental, emotional,
- 23:25spiritual. If you are physically, mentally,
- 23:27emotionally and spiritually fit, you're going to be a powerful
- 23:30human being. So I have a therapist.
- 23:32Her name's Carol. I've been doing therapy for
- 23:34three years. It has been amazing and brutal
- 23:38because I had a particularly challenging childhood.
- 23:41But I'm all for it man, and thank you again for having me.
- 23:43I do get a jump because of time management.
- 23:46Of amazing, amazing and brutal. You have actually been amazing
- 23:49on the podcast today. Brutal.
- 23:51We've had to work within time crunch and of course, you know,
- 23:54to my audience, check out Alan's work at Next Level University.
- 23:58Remember, therapy is a tool, not a weakness.
