- 0:00Welcome everyone to the Becker's Healthcare podcast series.
- 0:02I'm Mariah Muhammad, writer and moderator with Becker's
- 0:05Healthcare. And I'm thrilled to have with me
- 0:07today Stacy Edgar, cofounder and CEO at Venture.
- 0:10Stacy, welcome back to the podcast. We're very
- 0:12excited to have you join us again today.
- 0:15To start our conversation, I wanted to touch
- 0:17on finances a bit as it seems like
- 0:20it's the main topic for hospital systems
- 0:22and insurances today.
- 0:24So balancing affordability
- 0:26and quality is a constant challenge for health
- 0:28plans, as I'm sure you know. How is
- 0:30your organization
- 0:31innovating to manage the cost of care while
- 0:34also maintaining
- 0:35or improving member outcomes?
- 0:39Yeah. Well, first of all, thanks so much
- 0:40for having me. And, by way of background,
- 0:43for those,
- 0:44who maybe don't know me, I'm Stacy. I'm
- 0:46the CEO of Mentor.
- 0:48We are building personalized health insurance.
- 0:51And how we're doing that is leveraging the
- 0:53ICWA regulation.
- 0:55That stands for individual coverage health reimbursement arrangement,
- 0:59which is about a five year old, tax
- 1:01term that allows employers of any size to
- 1:04provide cash
- 1:06instead of a group health plan.
- 1:08And how it works is each employer
- 1:11sets a budget.
- 1:12That budget is pretax for the company.
- 1:15Each employee gets a budget, and they get
- 1:17to decide
- 1:18which insurance plan is best for them. They
- 1:21have to buy insurance to claim the money,
- 1:22but they also
- 1:24they don't have to use all the money
- 1:25on health insurance, so they could decide to,
- 1:28allocate part of that funds into a health
- 1:30wallet. And to bring that back to your
- 1:32question,
- 1:33what it does for both the employer and
- 1:35employee,
- 1:36and also frankly for health plans as well,
- 1:38is give this huge amount of flexibility.
- 1:41And it also unbundles
- 1:43this group model
- 1:44where you have this one size fits all
- 1:46approach. Maybe,
- 1:48you know, what you see with employers is
- 1:50maybe there's one person or two people who
- 1:52really need,
- 1:54especially if they're in the c suite, really
- 1:55need access to this one thing, but then
- 1:58the whole company
- 2:00needs to has to pay for it in
- 2:01term form of premiums. In this case, when
- 2:03you unbundle it, you get each employee the
- 2:06choice to choose, hey. What's important to me?
- 2:09And define how they allocate funds.
- 2:12It just creates more efficiency in market, but
- 2:15also
- 2:16allowing each person to, you know, really prioritize
- 2:20how money is spent
- 2:21based on the priorities in their life, whether
- 2:23it is, you know, managing diabetes or planning
- 2:26for a new family or, you know, maybe
- 2:29there there's nothing going on in their life
- 2:31that they're concerned about today. Maybe they can
- 2:33focus on wellness and prevention and direct that
- 2:35money there.
- 2:36So that's how we're doing that today.
- 2:39Wonderful. Thank you so much for giving us
- 2:41that background. I'm sure it will be useful,
- 2:43within our conversation
- 2:45today.
- 2:46And then kind of to move on, in
- 2:48an ever evolving,
- 2:49regulatory
- 2:50landscape,
- 2:51what best practices or tools does your organization
- 2:54rely on to keep the quality of care
- 2:56at the forefront?
- 2:59That's a great question.
- 3:00So the North Star for our organization
- 3:03is always thinking about the individual and the
- 3:06family and making sure that they get what
- 3:09they need at the right at the best
- 3:10price point. And so if you prioritize that
- 3:13I know it sounds very simple, but if
- 3:15as long as you're prioritizing the member and
- 3:18really thinking about their journey,
- 3:20then, you know, a lot of things flow
- 3:22from that. And that's actually where, you know,
- 3:25our model is actually quite innovative in that
- 3:27you put the spending power in the hands
- 3:29of the family.
- 3:31And so that's how we're doing it today,
- 3:32and that's where we're excited that regulatory
- 3:35change, especially recent regulatory changes made that happen.
- 3:40Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. And addressing health,
- 3:43equity has become a critical focus for many
- 3:45health plans. As, again, I'm sure you know,
- 3:47it's a big topic whenever I I really
- 3:50talk to a health plan,
- 3:51executive. Can you share an overview of a
- 3:54key initiative here that you're involved in or
- 3:57particularly,
- 3:58excited about?
- 4:00One thing that we're especially excited about is
- 4:03thinking about different,
- 4:05very niche user journeys. So, what I what
- 4:08I mean by that actually, this one's not
- 4:09that niche, but it's very, very overlooked.
- 4:13Helping moms, new moms,
- 4:15financially plan their health care journey. So we
- 4:18all know
- 4:19pregnancy delivery in America
- 4:22costs, an astronomical number, like 18,000,
- 4:26and that's actually that's when things go well.
- 4:28It could be much more than that if,
- 4:31you know, you have a complex
- 4:33pregnancy.
- 4:34And what we do is we look at,
- 4:35you know, here if you if you got
- 4:37this budget from your employer,
- 4:39what's how do we maximize it to basically
- 4:41lower the cost of care
- 4:44for a new mom or, you know, a
- 4:45second time mom or third time mom, but
- 4:47really think about,
- 4:49lowering the access to care burdens, that maybe,
- 4:52like, you know, the cost drivers that are
- 4:54keeping people away from getting the prenatal or
- 4:57postnatal care they they need and also, you
- 5:00know, just making it more,
- 5:02you know, having a family more accessible
- 5:04to more Americans as well.
- 5:08Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. Well, helping new moms is
- 5:11an amazing initiative, and I actually haven't talked
- 5:13to someone else who's talked about this. So
- 5:15that's amazing.
- 5:16And kinda going in with that, member satisfaction
- 5:19is essential to thrive in today's competitive health
- 5:22care market.
- 5:23I'm sure the mothers are very satisfied with
- 5:25this focus.
- 5:26But what experience or engagement strategies have proven,
- 5:31effective
- 5:31for your organization so far? How are you
- 5:34measuring the,
- 5:35the success?
- 5:38So we measure the success of, in terms
- 5:41of member satisfaction
- 5:42in multiple ways.
- 5:44Monthly
- 5:44customer satisfaction scores,
- 5:47you know, also satisfaction scores
- 5:49at each point
- 5:50of engagement
- 5:52with our customers. And we're proud to say
- 5:54we've actually had a 98%
- 5:56customer retention,
- 5:59in every year that we've operated as a
- 6:01business.
- 6:02And key to that is actually,
- 6:05that level of personalization.
- 6:07So one thing that's really scary is, you
- 6:09you know, when you give,
- 6:11when you at the employer level, when you,
- 6:14walk company through this model, it's a lot
- 6:16of change. And so we actually have very
- 6:18hands on account managers who are who we
- 6:21see as partners
- 6:23to our clients, and we're there to be
- 6:25right in the thick of things and really
- 6:27take things off of their plate and work
- 6:30in partnership with them. And then on the
- 6:32employee side, when you give somebody a budget
- 6:34and you say, alright.
- 6:36You know, this is now up to you.
- 6:38That can be overwhelming in health care. So
- 6:40they really do need
- 6:41a guide, and part of that guidance is,
- 6:44you know, delivering the form of technology. But
- 6:46we always believe that you should always have
- 6:48somebody you could talk to about, you know,
- 6:51your really personal needs and really make it
- 6:53about you. And I think that,
- 6:56you know, instead of maybe, you know, having
- 6:58a general like, we talked about moms earlier
- 7:00in this podcast. Instead of talking generally about
- 7:03moms,
- 7:04we're able to say, hey. This is your
- 7:06pregnancy,
- 7:07like, your child, and really personalize that plan
- 7:10for each person. And that's what really makes
- 7:13a difference and also what I think has
- 7:14led to that satisfaction score as well.
- 7:19Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. Well, the net,
- 7:21promoter score is a powerful indicator
- 7:24of member loyalty and satisfaction.
- 7:27How are you using NPS to drive meaningful
- 7:29improvements across your health plan?
- 7:32Yeah. So we we look at,
- 7:34basically,
- 7:35we look at
- 7:36any friction points, and that drives our product
- 7:39road map. And, you know, and then we
- 7:41keep measuring it until that friction point has
- 7:43gone away.
- 7:45And looking at,
- 7:47how do we boost that NPS score and
- 7:50really just keep keeping customer at the North
- 7:52Star. And the biggest gift any customer gives
- 7:55you is is constructive feedback.
- 7:58So really making sure that we take that
- 8:00seriously and then act upon it with haste.
- 8:04Yeah. Yeah. Definitely. Well, we've talked about how,
- 8:07how it's imperative to reduce cost, improve quality,
- 8:10and advance health equity.
- 8:13But,
- 8:14obviously, these are not small task,
- 8:16and it takes a bit of time. How
- 8:18do you approach aligning these priorities in your
- 8:21organization's
- 8:22strategic vision?
- 8:25Great question. So
- 8:27I would say to that,
- 8:29the customer is always the North Star. So
- 8:31coming back to that comment we made earlier,
- 8:34it's really about the individual. It's about the
- 8:36family. It's about the employer. And this also
- 8:38you know, we also think about the larger
- 8:41ecosystem in which we play and whether we're
- 8:43talking about payers,
- 8:44in terms of insurance carriers or,
- 8:47you know, health systems and providers
- 8:50and really just making sure that we're creating
- 8:53you know there's a lot of actors. And
- 8:55because of that, there's a lot of noise.
- 8:57And so, you know, we assign a North
- 9:00Star, which
- 9:01is around the individual and the family.
- 9:03But
- 9:04we also believe that creating as many win
- 9:06wins as possible across the ecosystem, you know,
- 9:07helps us do our job better. And so
- 9:07we
- 9:08And
- 9:12so
- 9:13what we spend a lot of time on
- 9:14is
- 9:15making sure we're understanding how our partners work
- 9:19and also what their incentives are.
- 9:21And so, you know you know, it's often
- 9:23easy to say, hey. I demand this of
- 9:25you, or why don't you do this better?
- 9:26But making it two way of saying, you
- 9:29know, we could probably be better too. And
- 9:31how do we make this a win win
- 9:33for us as for all?
- 9:35And,
- 9:37so but also just making sure that, you
- 9:39know, you have to pick a focus point
- 9:42and you can't,
- 9:43boil the ocean. So, you know, of all
- 9:45those actors, we've, you know, definitely decided, okay.
- 9:48This one is the priority actor and everything
- 9:50else is in service of that that person,
- 9:52and that also clarifies decision making as well.
- 9:58Yeah. Yeah. Thank you so much for explaining
- 10:00that. I'm sure other people will definitely take
- 10:03that, into consideration.
- 10:05And, Stacy, before I let you go, looking
- 10:07ahead, what do you see as the biggest
- 10:09opportunity for payers
- 10:10to really lead the, change and transform,
- 10:13transforming care delivery and driving better outcomes for
- 10:17all stakeholders?
- 10:19Really, how can leaders take a step in
- 10:21this direction now?
- 10:23Yeah.
- 10:25I think keeping track of the most important
- 10:27thing right now is keeping track of everything
- 10:30that's happening,
- 10:32which I you know, that's whether it's AI
- 10:34or regulation, there's a lot. And, actually, what
- 10:37I think we're about to see and for
- 10:39anybody listening to this podcast or this episode,
- 10:43I would encourage you to take a look
- 10:45at ICRA, get to know it. It is
- 10:47a new way to pay for health care
- 10:48entirely, and there's new regulation even as of
- 10:51this week being considered in the house of
- 10:53representatives.
- 10:55And
- 10:56the,
- 10:58on top of that, the technology change that
- 11:01is happening alongside it,
- 11:03the future I see is that we're gonna
- 11:05see increasing personalization
- 11:07where you know? And I think the consumer
- 11:10is gonna demand it as well.
- 11:12And we're kinda going back to you know,
- 11:15instead of being able to talk about categories
- 11:17in general terms, like whether it's, you know,
- 11:20we're talking about conditions or we're talking about,
- 11:22populations or we're talking about geographies,
- 11:25that people will wanna see, you know, this
- 11:27is the plan for me
- 11:29and really be able to custom fit that.
- 11:32And I think that's the next chapter of
- 11:35health and health care and health insurance.
- 11:37The law is here. The technology is here.
- 11:40It's just a matter of time at this
- 11:42point.
- 11:43And,
- 11:44keeping up to date with all the things
- 11:46that are changing, I think, is really, really
- 11:48crucial at this moment in time.
- 11:52Absolutely. I completely agree, there. And thank you
- 11:54so much for those final thoughts. It's definitely
- 11:56been a very informative discussion. So, again, I
- 11:58wanna thank you so much for coming back
- 12:00on Beckley's Health Care. I look forward to
- 12:02connecting with you again soon.
- 12:04Likewise. Thank you so much.
