Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the SOB Scarlet Orange and Brown Podcast, weekly breakdown of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Cleveland Browns.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: Here are your hosts, Ken Carpenter and Chris Husman.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: Hello, and welcome to episode four of the SOB Scarlet Orange and Brown Podcast.
- 0:19SPEAKER_03: I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And I'm Chris Husman.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: And we are looking at a perfect 3-0 weekend with the Browns, the Buckeyes, and the Bengals, the three Bs.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: And uh Jeremiah Smith, he sets the receiving record for the Buckeyes in a 59-3 win.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: The Bengals defense just completely shut down the Houston Texans 20-6.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: And I can't believe I'm saying this, but the Browns and Deshaun Watson surprised Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-19.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Kenny, I mean, just think about what you just said.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: The Bengals defense won a game, and the Browns and Deshaun Watson just beat up on a top NFC team.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: You know, it's just it was a good week.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: Yes, it was.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Wasn't expecting that, that's for sure.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Well, let's talk, let's talk Ohio State.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: They got just what the doctor ordered.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: Kent State, the golden flashes, had four rushing TDs.
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: Saiyan spreads the ball around.
- 1:31SPEAKER_03: Defense was solid.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: Six for seven in the red zone.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, that that is a plus um that I was wanting to see transferring from the Texas uh that Texas week to uh this week and just trying to move do that.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And uh they're instituting from what I understand something called a bison package, Kenny.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Yes, and what that is, they're bringing in the extra offensive linemen and trying just to get those big dogs in there to get those, you know, to make them more effective in the red zone and uh to allow those backs to um, you know, uh get in the end zone.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Um and you know, it's been a problem.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, that Jackson backfield, you know, with Bo and Jacoby uh are very talented.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: You know, they combined for 120 yards, three touchdowns on 18 carries uh last week.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Um very stabilizing, and I like to see that because we're gonna need it going forward.
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: Probably the biggest concern coming out of the weekend was they were one for eight on third down.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was concerned about that as well.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I'm I'm concerned about saying spreading the wealth.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, everything that I've read this week uh leading up, you know, to this game against Illinois has been, you know, Saiyan's lack of ability to just stop focusing and fixating on Jeremiah Smith.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I know he's the best receiver, so to speak, with his record-breaking performance uh in Ohio State's history, you know, with 2,898 yards.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know, Smith's gonna draw that extra attention from defenses, Kenny, especially the better defenses that we play.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And he's got to be able to, you know, on that passing tree, you know, just revert to number two and number three easily.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And I just don't see that in him right now.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Um, I see him, okay, this is a play, it's gonna be a you know, a 10-yard end to Jeremiah Smith, and that's what he's looking for, and it's not there.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: And by that time, he tries to fixate on the his number two, let's say Brandon Ennis, or um, you know, some of the other talented guys that we have, and he's just not making that transition.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So I want to see a better transition, you know, to either Chris Henry Jr.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: or whoever else that that is out there, and um, you know, just make that easier.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: And, you know, I I think that, you know, he he did spread it around a little bit more this week, but it'll be inter interesting going into the the Big Ten play, uh, how they're how he's going to react.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: And the other thing is, you know, and you know, he's gonna get it more pressure, and is he gonna be willing to step up in the pocket and take chances and run the ball?
- 4:31SPEAKER_03: And the the one thing that jumped out to me that I came across was they are the 11th youngest team in college football, and second youngest in the Big Ten.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Wow, and um, I mean, that's that's saying something, Kenny.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, and and think about that.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Of those young guys, I mean, how many are four and five-star players?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, these kids are player ready right now.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, we just don't skip a beat at Ohio State.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, we expect, you know, full throttle all the time.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I think we were uh that Texas game, uh, if we had that back, honestly, Kenny, I think we beat them nine times out of ten.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: It was just a perfect storm.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Um, I saw Joel Clatt this week um come up with uh, you know, his top five uh football teams, and um he had Ohio State, he was debating on putting Ohio State two.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: He had him at three right behind Ole Miss.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I trust what he says.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Um, he's a pretty fair uh prognosticator when it comes to and and and you know, when it comes to calling these games.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Um very, very good, very talented.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I I really, you know, uh trust in what he says, and I'm right there with him.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I don't know who you have as your top five, Kenny.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: Uh well I would think, I mean, you got to give Texas credit.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: They beat Ohio State.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: So I would put them at number one.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: Ole Miss looked really, really good.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: And I'd I debated having them jump Texas, but I'd put them at two.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: I'd probably put Ohio State three, Georgia four, and Notre Dame five.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: And Indiana just on the outside looking in.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: That is solid.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Um, I was thinking about this too uh today.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Um, I have Texas number one.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: I have Ohio State number two.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, we went down there and we controlled the game for, you know, I guess three quarters, and then it just all fell apart.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: But, you know, we ended up getting getting beat by one point.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: But I have Ohio State number two.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Um Georgia, in my opinion, is very good.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Um, I think their um their schedule, I think their quarterback, um, you know, all those things are in line for another Georgia run this year.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Uh Ole Miss, I have at four, and I have Indiana at five.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: And, you know, they're the defending national champs, and you know, they're they're two or three and oh, and you know, that's uh I I gotta give them props right now.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: Yes, and you know, there was something, you know, this may be just way a way too early thought, but with the there's a lot of really good quarterbacks across the country, and there's going to be quite a few teams looking to to draft quarterbacks in the NFL, and you know, two of them being the the Browns and probably the uh the Miami Dolphins.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: But Atlanta.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, I I think it may I you know I may be way off on this, but maybe Julian Sang comes back for another year.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Um you know, we talked about this on the SOB um a couple weeks ago, uh, how we were surprised that um Fehey was what number two?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: He got extensive time last week.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And um Tavian St.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Clair, I mean, we were wondering where he was at.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Now he got in a game against um uh he got in this last game.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: He threw an interception.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: It was a it was a pretty pretty bad interception, in my opinion.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: He's got two interceptions at this point.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm wondering if that might not be the case too, Kenny.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, I uh you know, with Saiyan coming back, uh he could use all the uh experience uh that he can get to bolster himself for the NFL.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Um that's a good call.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: That'll be really interesting to see.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: Yes, and I think he's got a I mean, he lets all those good quarterbacks go out this year, and you know, he might be the top guy coming out the the following year.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: It's it's it's a we're we're a long ways away, but uh you know, he he could really just get hot and who knows, you know, skyrocket all the way to the Heisman podium.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: I I think it's probably gonna be Jeremiah more than saying.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: 100%, Kenny.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: And if this and if this season doesn't prepare him, then nothing will.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, at USC, at Texas, you know, at Iowa, um, you know, you got Oregon at home, you got Michigan at home.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's this is gonna be, you know, this this season will prep him for these college football playoffs coming up, but we can't have any more hiccups, Kenny.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: I I just don't want to have three three losses and be limping in here.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, we got to be on our game.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_03: And I I wanted to bring this up.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: And, you know, I a lot of people are talking about it.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: I think it's with the way technology is, we should be able to have a radio feed coming in to our television, you know, our big screens or whatever, because I don't know if you listened to it or not, but but I I'm just trying to figure out what was going on with Gus Johnson.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: I I knew what exactly you were gonna say, Kenny.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, it was almost like he um just tuned out.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, I I I you weren't the only one to see that.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think everyone saw that.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, if you're gonna be there and you're gonna I it's almost as if, you know, he was like, why am I announcing um you know the Ohio State, uh, this Ohio State game with a lowly Mac opponent, and you know, it was almost like he was insulted, you know, to be there.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And um I, you know, I got that same rub, but you know, Joel Clatt, I mean, he's right on it.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, he's there and he's gonna do his job.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: And um, no, I get it.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: I I knew exactly what you were gonna say, and I'm right there with you.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: But he got excited at the very end when he started talking about the point spread.
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, and Kent State's going uh potentially going for a touchdown, and I'm like, and even Clatt, I think, even kind of was like, We're gonna go there, that type of, you know.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, I just I mean, I remembered how excited I was all the time to have Gus Johnson do the announcing for these games, and you know, the big hit hit by Denzel Ward coming up, you know, and you know the barbecue comment.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, those were just you know, those are uh excellent, excellent reporting and excellent uh job commentating, and it just seemed to be like, you know, we found out he was a Michigan uh supporter, and you know, I think a lot of times, you know, people are holding that against him, you know, when it comes to Ohio State.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, I'm gonna say that part of the problem is the Big Ten and the scheduling.
- 11:45SPEAKER_03: They need to do, you know, I'm not an SEC fan by any means, but stick that game right before the Michigan game, the Kent State game.
- 11:56SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: That way you can you can do a uh you can have a good Big Ten matchup for these guys that Fox is uh you know, seems like they're locked in on Big Ten games, and they could they could make that that game there, that game three, a a good matchup somewhere in the Big Ten.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: And there's a lot of good games that are going to be throughout the Big Ten, but I don't know.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: I I just felt bad for the uh you know the 75-yard touchdown run from Chris Henry, and it was just like uh he's going for a touchdown, you know.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, catch and he jumped.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, just kids first, you know, his dad dies, and you know, um, you know, he he he gets you know, Pac-Man Jones takes him under his wing and you know raises him up and right and makes sure he gets to college, and you know, here's his first uh hopefully of many touchdowns uh for Ohio State, and that's what we get.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well uh seriously, you know, and he's got the game again this week, him and Joel.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: So yeah, well we'll see if you're gonna be able to do him.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: You'll somebody has mentioned that to him, and you're gonna see this guy, you know, going crazy on just routine plays, I guarantee it.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Hey, but you know what, Kenny, everybody's entitled to a bad day, you know, even Gus Johnson, right?
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: Yes, without a doubt.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: Well, let's transition over to your Cincinnati Bengals.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: They everybody come, you know, going into the season is like, I hope they get this defense fixed.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: And they held the Houston Texans to 18 yards rushing.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: And I I don't know if there's going to be a better combination of the the three-headed monster of Burrow Chase and Higgins.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can always, uh, we can always talk on this podcast about T.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Higgins, Jamar Chase, and Joe Burrow.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: And we can always talk in this podcast about how the offensive line isn't good enough and how, you know, he got banged around a little bit.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but, you know, at the end of the day, that's Bengals football.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: And this is the first time in a lot of years, Kenny, that I'm seeing that we are solid on all three facets of the game.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Special teams.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, Evan McPherson doesn't bat an eye on a 60-yard field goal anymore.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, uh, our uh our punt and our kickoff coverage is on point.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Um I have just the utmost respect for some of those guys that, you know, basically their only role is to is to run down on kickoffs and punt coverage.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: And um, those guys are just, I mean, they're they're making their hay.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, they really are.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: They're doing a great job.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Defensively, I mean, everybody clamored in Cincinnati for a long time about the defense.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: And so they finally went out and they got a leader in the locker room, and he just so happens to be the number one defensive lineman in the NFL.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Dexter Lawrence not only is paying dividends on the defensive line with that fourth and two inches stop, um, but he him and and Jonathan Allen, um, those two, and then you um are are are just controlling that defensive line.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And then you have our two linebackers that everybody hated last year.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: These guys are just leading the NFL in tackles right now, and it's freeing everybody up.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Uh uh is the offensive line a concern?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Um, are the star connections still the same?
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Um, the backfield rotation with Brown and um Sam JP Ryan, excellent.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Um, our tight ends, great blockers.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Um, the defense has been the difference.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And you know, the fast 2-0 start, I I love to see.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, I saw where we were up to number three in the power rankings in CBS.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Uh, I just saw an interview today with Zach Taylor um, you know, talking about all three phases of his team and the chemistry of his team and the leaders in the locker room.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, two things that he did stress that I agree with them are let's take this one game at a time.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: We got a big division game coming up with at Pittsburgh, not an easy place to play.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: You know, I know they're down uh struggling a little bit right now, but they're one and one.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I know Aaron Rodgers isn't very mobile, his line's not blocking for him.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Um, but you know how much of a game it is.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Every time you go to Pittsburgh, I mean, we have to see, you know, that adversity.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: What's that, you know, when we do face adversity, what's that gonna look like and how are we gonna react?
- 16:57SPEAKER_03: Yes, and I think that you know, a lot of credit has to go to for the Bengals taking a chance and trading one their away their number one pick and getting Dexter Lawrence, because there were some people out there saying, well, you know, is he gonna show up in shape?
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: And obviously it's paying off early in the season, and now you go to Pittsburgh, and that's always a tough AFC North game.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: But I really got to believe that I think Aaron Rodgers is he he should have stepped up, stepped away last year, I think.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and you know, Mike McCarthy knows that.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, but I think he's earned his right to say, I want I'll go when I'm ready to go.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: And um he's earned that.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Now he knows that if he's not effective, um, which I think this year he's gonna find that out.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Um, last year it really surprised me with Aaron Rodgers.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I thought I thought he did really well.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, for the most part.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Um, but when it comes to um AFC North football and you know the defensive ends that we have um coming after you.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Uh now the now the defensive line, I mean, coming after you.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, you Kenny, you just I mean, look at the quarterbacks that got hurt this week, Kenny.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: You know, and this guy's still back there.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, we're just one bad play away from Joe Flacco getting back in there, you know.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: But that's not a bad backup.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: It's not a bad backup.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: I would love to have him, you know.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: But um, yeah, the quarterback play is going to be a difference, I think, in this game.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, Joey Porter's dinged up.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Um, but when you're throwing Dex Sexy Dexie and Jonathan Allen and Boy Amafe back there, and you know, just that uh re-energized defense that we had.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: We had um another defensive end uh that had two sacks.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Um, even Shamar Stewart got a sack, for goodness sake.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: So, you know, uh it's just contagious.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: You know how it is, Kenny, with uh the sports that we've coached.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know how it is when things start going your way and things start getting contagious, special things happen.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: But let's see what happens if we have some adversity.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: Well, I think uh I for I thought I'd written down the spread on this one, but I I just didn't think that uh whatever it is, Cincinnati's going to come away with the win.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, three and a half is what it is.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Um I here's the thing about Vegas.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Vegas always knows something, right?
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: And you know, they're not gonna give Pittsburgh ten and a half.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, that's I mean, it's just that that's not the way a Steelers Bengals game goes.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: Even though I did hear on you know on the internet today, Cincinnati might score 50 on these guys.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: And they very well could.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's in their DNA now.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: They they very well could, Kenny.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's just when you get in that city and then you walk in that stadium and you see those terrible tiles flying, and this, that, and the other, I mean, different things happen.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: Now, it's gonna be 65 and sunny, and it's gonna be no wind.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Um, and you know, um, I love that.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: It's this is perfect football weather right now.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but I do, I do love, you know, Cincinnati in this game.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: You know, I've taken them 24 to 13.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: Yes, I I think that uh the the Bengals just despite their their line not giving them the as much protection as they they would like.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: I got the 31, 3110 Cincinnati over Pittsburgh.
- 21:07SPEAKER_03: And you know, and that that trend you know makes us uh jump over to Cleveland Browns.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Uh I really thought I think the whole Cleveland Brown uh fan base thought that this past weekend was gonna be it for Deshaun Watson, but he was solid.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: He he did what he needed to do.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: He had uh you know, the two rookie wide receivers, Concepcion in Boston.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: They're they're the answer at the wide out position.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: And Jerry Judy I think he's on the outside looking in, and I think he might end up being a trade piece.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: And I could see possibly going to Buffalo and maybe getting a draft pick for him, but Swatchinger at uh linebacker near defense uh the rain delay kind of made it interesting.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: And then uh you know, Munkin just, you know, when's the last time you seen a coach high-fiving the fans as he's running up and down the stadium there?
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: That was that was fun to see when you you don't get a whole lot of wins as a Cleveland Brown fan.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Well, before I get into my take on this, I want to know what did you think of Tomlin and Monken's response?
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: I, you know Tomlin came back and said, you know, he he's like, it's amazing I can still motivate some guys, you know, and he's not a head coach anymore.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, since 1999, you know, Tomlin hasn't been, you know, he he has a pretty good idea that, you know, the the Browns are gonna brown.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: But but, you know, I think uh, you know, Munken, he's got a little different attitude compared to Stefansky, because I think Stefansky would have been a totally different uh made totally different comments.
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: He may not have even addressed it, you know, but but Moncken, he doesn't care.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: He's waited a long time to be a head coach, and he's just gonna let it fly.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: And, you know, if if it works, I'm all for it.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: Well, uh, you earlier you talked about Deshaun, probably gonna start, you know, this week.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Um hey, last week, meaning two weeks ago, okay.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Um he had a 99% passer rating.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: This week he had a uh 122.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: That's that's better than Joe Burrow as far as passer ratings are concerned.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Now, you know, he 24 for 30, efficient.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: 238 yards, pretty good.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Um but I get it.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: You know, the Browns want more, they need more.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Um, it was Moncins' first win, you know, uh they want that new culture coming in.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Um I get it.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: You know, I totally get it.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Um the defense has been resilient um to the point.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Um, like you said, I mean, I'm really impressed with Blackman and Sweshinger.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: Um you know, the those last you talk about stopping the last drives.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, they had drives like one, six, and seven, and that was it.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: And um, that clutch fourth quarter quarter execution.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, that was uh, in my opinion, that's O'Cleveland Browns football.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, um, I think some keys that they're gonna have against Carolina is they gotta stop the running game.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Chuba Hubbard is such a resilient, dynamic back that he can catch the ball out of the backfield.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: He can run it.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: You know, the thing that we got to realize too is that Carolina, they have nine TDs already.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Um, Cleveland has three.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: So I know it's the home opener for the Browns.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: You know, Cleveland's got Jenkins, their offensive lineman.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: You know, he hurt his neck.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Campbell, the cornerback, hurt his hip.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Um Owzu, one of the linebackers, hurt his neck.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: And for Carolina, really the only one out is uh Brooks, uh, just a you know third-down running back.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: So it's gonna be 67 and sunny up there in Cleveland on the lake for the home opener.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: I hope the Browns show out, turn out, you know, get the dog pound going.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Um, because they have a real potential to go two and one.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they they definitely have a shot.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: I think you know, their concerns going in is when is Jared Verse going to uh start making an impact?
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Like I said earlier about Jerry Judy, he just seems like he's not interested.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: I I just looking at his body language this past weekend, and the Quinshawn Junconson's got to get going with his running to football.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: They they gotta get a running game established or they're gonna be in trouble.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: But I gotta ask you this one how will the Browns fans react when something doesn't go right with Deshaun Watson this weekend?
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: They're gonna boo.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: They're gonna boo.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, but what they gotta understand is okay, what's next?
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Shadur.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, they won four games last year.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I I just I just think that there needs to be continuity, not only with a uh an offensive line that's all playing together for the first time, you gotta have that continuity back behind.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: You know his snap count, you know his cadence.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, Shadur's totally different, you know.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: So it's one of those things where his stats right now put him uh in the middle to upper third um of quarterbacks right now.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And the way these quarterbacks are dropping like flies, I mean, it's it's pretty crazy.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: You know, I did I did see something, I heard, you know, uh in that Zach Taylor interview that he said Joe doesn't have to be a superhero now every series.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: He doesn't have to go out and thread a needle to Iosavac or just throw a perfect deep ball to T.
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: He can go out there and punting is not such a bad thing now because we have a defense, we can pin somebody at back.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Look at the field position we had against the Texans.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, we just their defense, we just killed them in field position, Kenny.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, our average field position, I think, was a 45 or 45-yard line.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, that just puts so much pressure on a defense.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: So getting back to the Browns, I think if they're patient with Deshaun, I know the fans won't be.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: Um, but if they're patient with Deshaun, look out.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, think about it.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: What if he goes two and one this week?
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, without a doubt.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: And I think it's you know, the thing, because you know, both you and I have coached, and you know, the fans only see the highlights and uh the stuff, the just little clips, but we're not in practice.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: And I really don't think in the NFL they're gonna start somebody just because, you know, there's there's a reason he's the starting quarterback.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I mean I totally agree with you.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, there's a reason Todd Monkin's a coach.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: He's the head coach.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was successful somewhere in doing what he was doing.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I I I just think, you know, just like Stefansky was successful somewhere and the 24 other coaches you had before that, you know, but at some point in time, you gotta pick something and stay with it, and let's write it out and let's try to get some continuity going.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, without a doubt.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: Well, let's uh let's see how we do with our picks this week.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: I um I'm gonna stay in the college ranks for my upset and lock, and my upset is Michigan State at home getting five points um against Nebraska.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: My lock is San Diego State's traveling across the country for a noon game.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: So they're gonna be playing basically at nine o'clock in the morning and it's giving them three.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: So I'm taking Toledo.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Good call.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Good call.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Um, I just want to let you know that we were five and two last week, by the way.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, that puts us up to I think 14 and six, fourteen and five.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: So that's not too bad, Kenny.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: We're doing pretty good on that, and especially picking the spread and the over and under on some of these games.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Um boy, UC really let me down last week.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Oh no, now they came back and won that game, but my goodness.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and then obviously I get beat by Tampa Bay, which was a good thing for us because the Browns won.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm looking at this, Kenny.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: I I picked four big games, three of them college, and these are all upsets.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: I like Florida over Ole Miss.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: They're playing in the swamp.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: They're playing in the swamp.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Florida's not bad.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: They are good.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: They have talent.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Um, I like USC over Oregon.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Um, USC can put up some points.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: I don't know if they can stop Oregon, but I don't know if Oregon can Oregon just stops themselves, it seems like.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: So we'll see.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: And my biggest one is at Nealand Stadium.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: I'm taking Tennessee and the checkered board end zones over Texas.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: Tejas.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: Tennessee's uh they're they're getting five and a half, I believe, in that game.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: I'm correct.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and then my uh NFL upset is Tampa Bay over Minnesota.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Tampa Bay is a must-win.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Um, so I I I just I don't anytime Baker comes up north uh and plays, I remember him uh playing Detroit when Detroit was like legit, legit.
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Um, and he comes up in there and beats him.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Something about playing north in a in, you know, in the uh in a dome.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: I I put my money on Tampa Bay on this one.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: Well, let's let's I'm gonna throw two more bonuses out there.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: Um, let's just look at the University of Michigan.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: They are minus five and a half and they're playing Iowa.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: Who do you who do you take in that one?
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Flip a coin because I am still trying to figure out did everybody miss the boat on how bad Oklahoma was?
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, would they beat like Nevada uh School of Engineering uh 14 to 7 last week?
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, what?
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: You know, they come up, they look good the first week, you know, and then they come up to Michigan and it's like they never played the quarterback, look like he never played quarterback before.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: So I can't get a true read, Kenny, on Michigan.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, the coach who I respect, um, you know, when he's at Utah, all he does is stand on the sideline and watch the game like this.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, uh, I mean, he doesn't even turn around.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: He's not even on the headset, I don't think.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: I I mean, he's not communicating with his defensive coordinator, his offensive coordinator, special teams coach.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: He's just watching the game.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: You know, I mean, we used to say that about John Cooper, you know, when he coached Ohio State.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, you know, I mean, he was just out there to make the decision we're going forward on fourth down or not, coach, you know.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: Um so I just can't get a read, Kenny.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: I can't get a read on Michigan.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: I have no clue what's going to happen in this game.
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: Well, the other one, uh I would I would uh because my wife graduated from WVU, they're minus one and a half and they're playing Oklahoma State, who beat Oregon.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I think West Virginia and Rich Froud, uh they might have something going.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: I I don't I wouldn't want to come to I wouldn't want to go to West Virginia anytime, Kenny, let alone for a football game.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: And I've got family from West Virginia, all right.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: So uh, hey man, you know, Richrod has got them guys.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: This is his second year on a second stint coming back, and he's actually getting some of his guys in there, and they're starting to play pretty well.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: So that'll be a fun game.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: That will be a fun game to watch.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: Yes, and have you ever had an opportunity to go to a West Virginia football game?
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: I had an opportunity, and I said no.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: Um, but I have watched plenty of games at West Virginia.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Well, I uh I went with uh to a game when they were playing TCU a few years back, and there were two interesting things that happened, and one was right before the game, and I'm not gonna share that because I was uh I was stunned.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: But the game was uh West Virginia was beating TCU and it was probably the start of the fourth quarter, and two probably uh 50-year-old WVU fans they just start throwing haymakers at each other, and they're probably 10 rows in front of me.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: Yes, and the state troopers come down there and they they grab them up, and the one guy looks back, he's in handcuffs, he looks back and yells at his wife, he says, Let's go.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: And she said, I'm not leaving till the game's over.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: Kenny, when there's food involved, all right, and you're intoxicated and you're in West Virginia, somebody's gonna fight.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Yes, that is that is the number one party school in the nation, yeah.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: And I can imagine what the tailgates are like.
- 36:02SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, it's it's it's crazy.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: And the reason I went to the game was a buddy of mine from Connecticut, his son wanted to go to WVU for hockey, so we got tickets for him, and they came down, and he's a big Patriots fan, and it's freezing cold, and so he pulls out of the back of his car, New England Patriots to Balgan, and that's like Pittsburgh Court Country.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: And I didn't think we were gonna get through the crowd, they were just screaming, they were going crazy on him.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Well, Kenny, you this is what we call an oxymoron.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: You mentioned hockey and West Virginia in the same sentence.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, you know, is is it me or you know, I could see some of those guys that I know from West Virginia, and you put ice skates on them?
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: That's not gonna, it's not gonna be pretty, Kenny.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: It's not gonna be pretty.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: And there's not a flat piece of land in that state, Kenny.
- 37:06SPEAKER_03: No, you're walking uphill to everything.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: Um, hey, listen, I wanted to ask you, what's an Illibuck?
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Isn't it a turtle?
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: The Illibuck, and this is gonna be the battle for the Illibuck.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Um, and Ohio State's had the trophy.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: All right, yeah, it's a turtle, carved wooden turtle, symbolizing longevity, longevity of the rivalry.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and Ohio State has held on to the trophy continuously since 2008.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: Um so um the Illa Buck and Big Brett Belema um is coming up to Ohio State.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's gonna be an interesting experience.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: Um, Buckeyes are pretty healthy.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: Um hey, uh, this is what I want to tell you.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: James Laurenitis is getting honored after the first quarter.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, he's getting inducted into the uh 2026 College Football Hall of Fame.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: And he's gonna be the bell ringer.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: You know how I think last week we had um Kenny Smith, right?
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: I thought it was Maurice Clarette, one of those, but anyway, it might have been the first week.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, uh he's gonna be the bell ringer.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: Um he's also our uh linebackers coach, so that he better get his butt back down there.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, he's getting inducted uh into the Hall of Fame class.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: And um do you remember his father, Kenny?
- 38:41SPEAKER_03: Yes, he was the old, was he the ultimate warrior or no close?
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Not the ultimate warrior, but the road warrior.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Road warrior, Ed said I knew I Kenny.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: That dude was bad.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine if you spilled paint in the garage?
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: And you walked in and your dad's the road warrior.
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: I can't see he definitely uh breakfast club.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: It's like that scene out of breakfast club where this is what happens when you spill paint in a garage in my house, and he's got all those cigarette burns all over him.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: You know, hey, I'm telling you what, man, what a family that would be to grow up in, right?
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: This kid could not be anything else but a linebacker, Kenny.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, there he he was born for that.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 100%.
- 39:35SPEAKER_03: And you know, and I I dare you to not watch the game, and every time that camera pans over to Brett Bielama, tell me you don't think of the three stooges.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: Kenny, I guarantee you he's got a couple cheeseburgers and a Reese cup in his pocket.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: I'm telling you what, this guy and his wife, Kenny, is absolutely beautiful.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: Bless her heart.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: He's done well for himself.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Um, I just, you know, I've just ever since he's been at what was he at?
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: Wisconsin?
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Wisconsin, then Arkansas.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: And I mean, I just, you know, just because he was a badger, I just never liked a guy, but I always thought he was a decent coach.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, hey, we're battling for the Illa Buck this weekend.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: Yes, and uh I I gotta believe that the Buckeye should be able to uh take care of business.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, I mean, I got him winning 42 to 10, Kenny.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: All right, I'm gonna say 35-7.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: So we'll see how it ends up, I guess.
- 40:43SPEAKER_02: All right, let's do it.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: Well, that's a wrap for episode four of the Scarlet, Orange, and Brown podcast.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: Anything you want to finish up with?
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: I don't hate West Virginia, Kenny.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: I love wild, wonderful West Virginia.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: All of our listeners there, I'm just messing around.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: But I will tell you this: you can have that West Virginia turnpike because you take your life in your own hands on that thing.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: Woo! Yeah, you better be ready.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Kenny, I put a big dip, I put a big dip in.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: I got both hands, I get two batting gloves and I put them on the steering wheel, and I tell my wife, I'm like, don't talk.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm laser focused on this thing.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: And then when I get out, it's a big sigh of relief.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: I love West Virginia.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: Yes, without a doubt.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: I think it's uh referred to as Hillbilly Highway, the term probably.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: Well, hey, that's a wrap for week four.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm Ken Carpenter.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: I'm Chris Usman.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: Thanks for listening to the SOB.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: SOB.
