- 0:25Welcome back, listeners to Sam and Stories Presents, a folklore
- 0:28podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next story.
- 0:31I'm your host, Dustin, if you want more Sandman, I have extra
- 0:36stories that are too spicy for the main feed available on my
- 0:38Patreon, and you can get everything joining at the free
- 0:42tier. Today we are back in the book of
- 0:45Filipino folklore written down by Mabel Cook Cole.
- 0:49In these three stories, we learn about Lumowig, a great spirit,
- 0:53how he flooded the world and how he got married.
- 0:58And these are all stories by the Ibogao people.
- 1:02OK, let's begin the creation. In the beginning, there were no
- 1:09people on earth. Lumowig, the Great Spirit, came
- 1:12down from the sky and cut many reeds.
- 1:15He divided these into pairs that he placed in different parts of
- 1:18the world. And then he said to them, You
- 1:20must speak. Immediately.
- 1:23The reeds became people, and in every home was a man and a woman
- 1:27who could talk. But the language of each couple
- 1:29differed from that of the others.
- 1:33Then Lumiwig commanded each man and woman marry, which they did.
- 1:38By and by there were many children, all speaking the same
- 1:41language as their parents. These in turn married and had
- 1:44many children. In this way there came to be
- 1:47many people on this earth. Now Lumiwig saw that there were
- 1:54several things which the people on earth needed to use, so he
- 1:58set to work to supply them. He created salt and told the
- 2:02inhabitants of one place to boil it down and sell it to their
- 2:04neighbors. But these people could not
- 2:07understand the directions of the Great Spirit, and the next time
- 2:10he visited them they had not touched the salt.
- 2:15Then he took it away from them and gave it to the people of a
- 2:18place called Maiyanit. These people did as he directed
- 2:22and because of this he told them that they should always be the
- 2:25owners of the salt and that the other peoples must buy them from
- 2:28them. Then Lumowig went to the people
- 2:32of Pondock and told them to get a clay and make pots.
- 2:36They got the clay but they did not understand the molding and
- 2:39the jars were not well shaped. Because of their failure,
- 2:43Lumowig told them that they would always have to buy their
- 2:45jars and he removed the pottery to Samoki when he told the
- 2:51people there what to do, just as he has said, and their jars were
- 2:55well shaped and beautiful. Then the Great Spirit saw that
- 2:58they were fit owners of the pottery and he told them that
- 3:01they should always make jars to sell.
- 3:04In this way Lumawig taught all the people and brought them all
- 3:07to have things which they now have.
- 3:11The end. OK, and story #2 The flood
- 3:35story. Once Upon a time, when the world
- 3:40was flat and there were no mountains, there lived two
- 3:43brothers, sons of Lumowig, the Great Spirit.
- 3:47The brothers were fond of hunting, and since no mountains
- 3:50had formed, there was no good place to catch wild pig and
- 3:53deer. And the older brother said, Let
- 3:56us cause water to flow over all the world and cover it up, and
- 3:58then the mountains will rise. So they caused water to flow all
- 4:03over the earth, and when it was covered they took the head
- 4:07basket of the town and set it for a trap.
- 4:10The brothers were very much pleased when they went to look
- 4:13at their trap, for they had caught not only many wild pigs
- 4:16and deer, but also many people. Now Lumowig looked down from his
- 4:21place in the sky and saw that his sons had flooded the earth,
- 4:24and then in all the world there was just one spot which was not
- 4:27covered. And he saw that all the people
- 4:31in the world had been drowned, except for one brother and one
- 4:33sister who lived in Pocus. Then Lumowig descended and he
- 4:37called to the boy and girl, saying, Oh, you are still alive.
- 4:43Yes, answered the boy, we are still alive, but we are very
- 4:47cold. So Lumowig commanded his dog and
- 4:51deer to get fire for the boy and girl.
- 4:54The dog and deer swam quickly away, but the Lumowig waited a
- 4:57long time. They did not return and all the
- 5:00time the boy and girl were growing colder.
- 5:04Finally Lumowig went after the dog and deer, and when he
- 5:07reached them he said, Why are you so long in bringing the fire
- 5:11to Pocus? Get ready and come quickly while
- 5:14I watch you, for the boy and girl are very cold.
- 5:19Then the dog and the deer took the fire and started to swim
- 5:22through the flood, but when they had gone only a little way the
- 5:26fire was put out. Lumui commanded them to get more
- 5:30fire, and so they did, but they swam only a little way again
- 5:34when that of the deer went out, and that of the dog would have
- 5:37been extinguished also, had not Lumui gone quickly to him and
- 5:40taken it. As soon as Lumowig reached the
- 5:44pokies he built a big fire which warmed the brother and sister,
- 5:48and the water evaporated so that the world was as it was before,
- 5:52except that now there were mountains.
- 5:55The brother and sister married and had children, and thus there
- 5:59came to be many people on the earth, the and.
- 6:24OK, and story #3 Lumowig on Earth.
- 6:29One day when Lumowig the Great Spirit looked down from his
- 6:32place in the sky, he saw two sisters gathering beans and he
- 6:36decided to go down to visit them.
- 6:39When he arrived at the place, he asked them what they were doing.
- 6:43The younger, whose name was Fugan, answered.
- 6:46We are gathering beans but it takes a long time to get enough
- 6:49for my sister wants to go bathing all the time.
- 6:53Then Lumiwig said to the older sister, hand me a single pod of
- 6:57the beans and when she had given it to him he shelled it into the
- 7:01basket and immediately the basket was full.
- 7:05The younger sister laughed at this and Lumiwig said to her,
- 7:08give me another pod and another basket.
- 7:12She did so and when he had shelled the pod, that basket was
- 7:16also full. Then he said to the younger
- 7:19sister, go home and get three more baskets.
- 7:24She went home, but when she asked for three more baskets,
- 7:26her mother said the beans were few and she did not need so
- 7:29many. Then Fukan told her of the young
- 7:32man who could fill a basket from 1 pot of beans.
- 7:35And the father who heard her story said, go bring the young
- 7:38man here, for I think he must be a God.
- 7:42So Fukan took the three baskets back to Lumowig, and when he had
- 7:46filled these the same way as he'd done the other two, he
- 7:48helped the girls carry them home to the house.
- 7:52As soon as they reached their home, he stopped outside to cool
- 7:55himself, but the father called to him and he went up into the
- 7:58house and asked for some water. The father brought him a coconut
- 8:03shell full of water, and before drinking it, Lumowig looked at
- 8:06it and said, If I stay here with you, I shall become very strong.
- 8:12The next morning Lumowig asked to see their chickens and when
- 8:16they opened the chicken coop, out came a hen and many little
- 8:19chicks. Are these all of your chickens?
- 8:22Asked Lumuwig and the father assured them that they were all.
- 8:27He bade them bring rice meal that he might feed them and as
- 8:31the chickens ate they all grew rapidly till they were all cocks
- 8:34and hens. Next Lumuwig asked how many pigs
- 8:37they had and the father replied that they had one with some
- 8:41little ones. Then Lumuwig asked them to fill
- 8:45a pail with sweet potato leaves and he fed the pigs.
- 8:49As they ate. They also grew to full size.
- 8:54The father was so pleased with all these things that he offered
- 8:57his oldest daughter to Lumuwig for a wife.
- 9:00But the Great Spirit said he preferred to marry the younger,
- 9:03so that was arranged. Now when his brother-in-law
- 9:06learned that Lumuwig desired a feast at his wedding, he was
- 9:09very angry and said where would you get food for your wedding
- 9:13feast? There is no rice, nor beef, nor
- 9:16pork nor chicken. But Lumwig only answered, I
- 9:20shall provide our wedding feast. In the morning, they all set out
- 9:25for Lanau, for Lumwig did not care to stay any longer in the
- 9:29house with his brother-in-law. As soon as they arrived, he sent
- 9:33for some tree trunks. But the trees that the people
- 9:36brought in were so small that Lumwig himself went to the
- 9:38forest and cut 2 large pine trees which he hurled to Lanau.
- 9:44When the people had built a fire with the trees, he commanded
- 9:47them to bring 10 kettles filled with water.
- 9:50Soon the water was boiling hot and the brother-in-law laughed
- 9:52and said, where is your rice? You have the boiling water but
- 9:57you do not seem to think of the rice.
- 9:59In answer to this, Lumenwig took a small basket of rice and
- 10:02passed it over the five kettles and they were full.
- 10:05Then he called Yushchao and some of the deer came running out of
- 10:09the forest. These were not what he wanted
- 10:12however, so he called again and some pigs came.
- 10:15He told the people that they were each to catch 1 and for his
- 10:18brother-in-law he selected the largest and best.
- 10:23They all set out in pursuit of the pigs and the others quickly
- 10:26caught theirs. But though the brother-in-law
- 10:28chased his until he was very tired and hot, he could not
- 10:32catch it. Llumiwig laughed at him and
- 10:35said, You chase that pig until he is thin, and still you cannot
- 10:39catch it, though all the others have theirs.
- 10:43Thereupon he grasped the hind legs of the pig and lifted it.
- 10:47All the people laughed, and the brother-in-law said, Of course
- 10:50you can catch it, because I chased it until it was tired.
- 10:54Lumowig then handed it to him and said, Here you carry it.
- 11:00But no sooner had the brother-in-law put it over his
- 11:02shoulder than it cut loose and ran away.
- 11:05Why did you let it go? Asked Lumiwig.
- 11:07Do you care nothing for it even after I caught it for you?
- 11:10Catch it again and bring it here.
- 11:14So the brother-in-law started out again and he chased it
- 11:16upstream and down, but he could not catch it.
- 11:19Finally Lumiwig reached down and picked up the pig and carried it
- 11:22to the place where the others were cooking.
- 11:25After they had all eaten and drunk and made their offerings
- 11:28to the spirits, Lumiwig said Come, let us go to the mountain
- 11:32to consult the omen concerning the northern tribes.
- 11:36So they consulted the omen but it was not favorable and they
- 11:40were starting home when the brother-in-law asked Lumiwig to
- 11:42create some water as the people were hot and thirsty.
- 11:47Why do you not create water Lumiwig?
- 11:49He repeated as Lumiwig paid no attention to him.
- 11:52You care nothing that the people are thirsty and in need of
- 11:55drink. Then they quarrelled and were
- 11:58very angry and Lumowig said to the people, let us sit down and
- 12:01rest. While they rested, Lumowig
- 12:04struck the rock with his spear and water came out.
- 12:08The brother-in-law jumped up to get a drink first, but Lumowig
- 12:10held him back and said he must be the last to drink.
- 12:14So they all drank, and when they had finished the brother-in-law
- 12:17stepped up, but Lumowig gave him a push, which sent him into the
- 12:20rock, and water came from his body.
- 12:24You must stay there, said Limowig, because you have
- 12:26troubled me a great deal. And they went home, leaving him
- 12:29in the rock. Some time after this Limowig
- 12:32decided to go back to the sky to live.
- 12:35But before he went he took care that his wife should have a
- 12:37home. He made a coffin of wood and
- 12:41placed her in it with a dog at her feet and a cock at her head.
- 12:46And as he said it floating on the water, he told it not to
- 12:49stop until it reached Ting Laen. Then if the foot end struck
- 12:54first, the dog should bark, and if the head end was the first to
- 12:57strike, the cock should crow. So it floated away, and on and
- 13:03on until it came to Tingleyan. Now a widower was sharpening his
- 13:08axe on the Bank of the river, and when he saw the coffin stop
- 13:12he went to fish it out of the water.
- 13:15On shore he started to open it, but Fugan cried out.
- 13:18Do not drive a wedge for I am in here.
- 13:21So the widower opened it carefully and took Fugan up to
- 13:24the town and then as he had no wife of his own he married her.
- 13:29The end. Well Congrats to Lumowig.
- 13:57He did all that stuff and got married in the end and then left
- 14:00his wife. Interesting.
- 14:01And the brother-in-law, I I can understand how brothers in law
- 14:05kind of tumble a little bit. My ex brother-in-law John, he
- 14:09and I did not get along. But my sister-in-law Hikung is
- 14:13amazingly wonderful. I love her and it's always
- 14:17interesting to read stories like this because they tell what's
- 14:19important to the people. It was also interesting that the
- 14:22name spelled Fukan. FUKAN in the first stories and
- 14:26then FUGAN in the last 1. And I don't think that they are
- 14:30different characters. Either way, I'm enjoying these
- 14:34stories and I look forward to finding more stories from the
- 14:36Philippines. And the podcast shout out is to
- 14:40the Down and Wordy Podcast. It is a lovely show hosted by
- 14:44Russell and Hannah. It covers a theme and throws in
- 14:47some linguistic fun along with it.
- 14:48Recently they covered The Proclaimers and their song 500
- 14:51Miles and then they talked about Imperial Measurements.
- 14:55They have also covered Productive Ussy Hands and a
- 14:57variety of other random fun learning and so if you like
- 15:01their show as much as I do, go and give them a like a rating
- 15:03and a review. And the listener shout out is to
- 15:06Krakow, Poland. According to Google, Krakow, a
- 15:10southern Poland city near the border of the Czech Republic, is
- 15:14known for its well preserved medieval corps and Jewish
- 15:16quarter. Its Old Town, ringed by Plenty
- 15:19Park and remnants of the city's medieval walls, is centered on
- 15:22the stately expansive Rynik Gulni Market Square.
- 15:26This Plaza is the site of the Cloth Hall, a Renaissance era
- 15:29trading outpost, and Saint Mary's Basilica, a 14th century
- 15:33Gothic church. Thank you, Google.
- 15:36And so to my listener in Krakow, I say nee Moi Cirque, nee Moi
- 15:40malpi, Not my circus, not my monkeys.
- 15:44A Polish phrase that I've always enjoyed.
- 15:47Thank you and good night.
