- 0:00Why Dolly Parton slept in her make up.
- 0:03There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:07Chad #1172 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Denise Abrams on her birthday.
- 0:20Happy birthday and Denise, you can get a free copy of my book,
- 0:23The Most Powerful Story in the World, by going to from
- 0:26chad.gumroad.com. The transcript of this message
- 0:29and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:31www.fromchad.com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:35You think keeping yourself polished when nobody important
- 0:38is watching his vanity. But upgraded thinking knows it's
- 0:41one of the purest forms of service there is.
- 0:44Here's the story. This is the second message I
- 0:48promised you this weekend to celebrate the life of Dolly
- 0:50Parton. The range of tributes have been
- 0:53remarkable. Presidents of both parties,
- 0:55Buckingham Palace, hip hop and pop stars and truck stop
- 0:58regulars all acknowledge there will never be another Dolly.
- 1:02The honors that stood out were the ones that mixed state ritual
- 1:05with her own symbols. Pink lights at 9:25, a nod to
- 1:09her movie and song, Nine to five flags at half mast for a week, a
- 1:13governor proposing a name change to an International Airport and
- 1:17a palace band playing a working woman's anthem.
- 1:21Dolly called herself quote always St. ready in quote.
- 1:26Other times, ambulance ready. She meant the same thing.
- 1:29Either way, she was never going to be seen without her hair done
- 1:32and her makeup on. Not on stage, not backstage, not
- 1:36at a gas station off the Interstate at 2:00 in the
- 1:38morning. She said she slept in her makeup
- 1:41while touring because you never know if you're going to wreck
- 1:44the bus. She was prepared to meet
- 1:46strangers in the wreckage of a bus crash, looking like Dolly
- 1:50Parton on her own bus. She had a bedroom and bathroom
- 1:53built in the back for one reason, so she never had to walk
- 1:56out in front of the crew without her face on.
- 1:58A quick stop for gas was, to her, a public appearance.
- 2:03She didn't have a formula for that image.
- 2:05She had a promise, and the only way you keep a promise like that
- 2:08is to actually live it. Gas stage, gas station stop or
- 2:12Grammy stage. Estee Lauder had the same
- 2:15instinct. She'd ride a bus 6 hours to open
- 2:19a single store in Corpus Christi, TX because no community
- 2:22was too small for her attention. She was always going to give her
- 2:26full effort. It's the same math as Dolly's
- 2:29bathroom in the back of the bus. There is no small audience and
- 2:33no off duty moment. Isador Sharp built The Four
- 2:37Seasons hotel chain on one sentence he repeated to his
- 2:40executives for decades. We are only what we do, not what
- 2:45we say we are. Dolly sleeping in her makeup was
- 2:49an action, and actions express priority.
- 2:52She was telling you what mattered without ever having to
- 2:55say it out loud. The better story to tell
- 2:58yourself is the people I meet today deserve the best version
- 3:03of me, whether I planned on meeting them or not.
- 3:06Here's why it mattered so much to her.
- 3:09Every person you meet is carrying, as Mary Kay used to
- 3:12put it, an invisible sign around their neck that says make me
- 3:16feel important. A fan who runs into a tired
- 3:19woman in sweatpants at a fuel pump gets a deflation.
- 3:24A fan who runs into Dolly Parton gets a story they tell for 40
- 3:28years. She wasn't protecting her ego.
- 3:30She was protecting their moment. Tell me a story of someone who
- 3:35showed showed up for you when they didn't have to to.
- 3:38From chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 3:43who's expecting your best today.
